Graham’s sister takes oath
Darin Graham became the first female senator to represent South Carolina three days after the death of her brother, Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham. On July 14, Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina and Sen. Katie Britt of Alabama accompanied Darin Graham to the Senate chamber at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, where they were sworn in by Senate President Pro Tempore Chuck Grassley, a longtime Iowa senator. The 64-year-old’s oath of office came a day after South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster nominated her to succeed him. Lindsey Graham passed away suddenly on July 11th from life-threatening conditions caused by a ruptured aorta, the body’s main artery. He was 71 years old.
Trump’s contract with the Internal Revenue Service will be invalidated
A federal judge has invalidated a settlement reached by President Donald Trump and his two eldest sons with the Internal Revenue Service. The settlement would have given broad tax protections to the family and their company and potentially benefited those who attacked the Capitol Police on January 6, 2021. In a July 13 court order, Judge Kathleen M. Williams, appointed by former President Barack Obama, wrote that the lawsuit is an attempt to legitimize the government’s efforts under the Trump administration. “Immunity for persons and entities associated with the President” and “appropriating billions of American taxpayer dollars” to address unspecified complaints.

Tyrannosaurus fossil sold for $50 million
One of the most complete Tyrannosaurus rex fossils ever discovered has sold for more than $50 million, making it the most expensive fossil ever sold. The fossil known as Gus was auctioned by Sotheby’s on July 14, according to the auction house’s Facebook page. The fossil, which is approximately 67 million years old, is not only the most complete, but also one of the largest Tyrannosaurus rex fossils ever discovered, according to a Sotheby’s news release. The fossil sold for $50.1 million, breaking the previous record of $44.6 million, according to Science.org. That record sale was a fossilized stegosaurus named Apex that was about 27 feet long.
‘Jurassic Park’ star Neil dies at age 78
Sam Neill, the actor best known for his role as Dr. Alan Grant in the “Jurassic Park” series, has died. He passed away at the age of 78. Neil’s family announced his “sudden and unexpected” death on July 13th on his Instagram account. “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Sam Neill’s whānau in Sydney, Australia on Monday 13th July,” the post said, using the Māori word for extended family. “Sam passed away surrounded by his family and with the dignity that characterized his life.” Neil announced in April that he was cancer-free after undergoing a clinical trial in Australia. He was diagnosed with stage 3 angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare blood cancer, in 2022.

Lee Soon-hee announces return to gymnastics
As it turns out, Suni Lee isn’t done with gymnastics. The Tokyo Olympics individual all-around champion announced his return on July 14th. She has not competed since the Paris Games two years ago, when she won three medals, including bronze in the individual all-around. Lee’s six medals at the Tokyo and Paris Olympics tied her for third place among U.S. female gymnasts with Aly Riseman. With Lee’s announcement, July 14th marks two years since the opening ceremony of the Los Angeles Olympics. “I know what I’m capable of and I’m going to do whatever it takes to get there.
