Rod Stewart has brought back some serious hardware from this year’s American Music Awards.
Stewart’s adult children awarded the singer “sexy to think it was day” a lifetime achievement award and called him out by his loving nickname “Papa Stew.” The singer said he was “surprised” to see five of his eight children on stage together.
Stewart then took to the stage and performed “Forever Young,” which features a tap of a backup dancer and an Irish-style violinist. It was his first performance at the AMA since 2004.
“When I first started singing in the early ’60s, before you were all here, there was this burning ambition to sing, so there was a reason I was hooked on it,” Stewart said. “That’s all I wanted to do. I didn’t want to be rich or famous. A few years later I won this incredible award.”
Stewart’s Lifetime Achievement Award Bookends a multi-year career in music with hits such as “Maggie May,” “Hot Legs,” and “Infatuation.” He is a two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame enrolled. He embarks on the North American foot this summer on his “last time” world tour.
“Sir Rod Stewart is a master showman whose charisma and energy ignores time and embodies the spirit of rock and roll,” executive producers Barry Adelman and Aleximazarias said in an AMAS press release.
Janet Jackson also won the Career Honoling Award at AMAS this year. The “Rhythm Nation” singer won the Icon Award and performed medleys of hit songs such as “The One Who Calls My Lover.”
