RFK Jr. says he’s ‘very concerned’ about cell phone radiation when asked about 5G

When asked about 5G towers, Kennedy cited research suggesting a link to cancer and tumor growth. However, the World Health Organization found that “there is no association between mobile phone use and brain tumors.”

WASHINGTON – Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. told USA TODAY that “electromagnetic radiation is a serious health concern” a day after the department launched a study on cell phone radiation.

“Generally speaking, electromagnetic radiation is a huge health concern,” Kennedy said in an exclusive interview when asked about concerns about 5G towers. “I’m very worried about that.”

Under the Make America Healthy Again movement, 22 states have restricted cell phone use in schools to promote children’s health, the department said. Since 2022, there has been a major movement to ban the use of cell phones in classrooms in K-12 schools across the country. However, this is to curb the impact of social media on mental health, prevent cyberbullying and being constantly online, and not electromagnetic radiation.

Mobile carriers’ 5G networks promise faster connections, but have been the target of skeptics who claim they have negative health effects. USA TODAY previously debunked online claims that 5G is dangerous.

The Food and Drug Administration under the Kennedy administration removed an old web page that said cell phones were not dangerous.

“While the FDA has removed a web page with outdated conclusions about cell phone radiation, HHS is working on research on electromagnetic radiation and health research to identify gaps in knowledge, including new technologies, to ensure safety and effectiveness,” said Andrew Nixon, a spokesman for the agency.

President Kennedy elaborated on his health concerns in an exclusive interview for USA TODAY’s “Extremely Normal” series, describing “more than 10,000 studies” documenting the negative effects of electromagnetic radiation, including cancer, tumor growth and DNA damage.

“Electromagnetic waves can be harmful depending on your pulse rate and wavelength,” Kennedy says. “Some of them are very malicious.”

The World Health Organization determined that the health concerns were not justified after it commissioned a study in which experts from nine countries analyzed 63 studies on mobile phones and cancer from 1994 to 2022. The study was published in the scientific journal Environment International in September 2024.

“Researchers found no association between mobile phone use and brain tumors,” the WHO said.
