President Donald Trump’s approval ratings fell slightly in a new national poll last week, but remain at a multi-month high dating back to mid-May.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll released on October 28 showed the president’s approval rating at 40%, up from 42% last week. Although the three-day poll showed a two-point drop from the previous poll, the difference was within the margin of error and the president’s ratings remained stable.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll found that positive opinion of his job performance has not deviated by more than 1 or 2 percentage points from the current 40% level for more than five months. However, disapproval rates rose over the same period, rising from 52% in the May 16-18 poll to 57% in the most recent October 24-26 poll.

The poll was conducted online among 1,018 adults nationwide and had a margin of error of 3 percentage points.

The poll also asked about people’s thoughts on what is currently the second longest government shutdown in American history. The debate over extending the health insurance tax credit, which expires at the end of the year, remains a key issue between Democrats and Republicans. President Trump and Republicans in Congress have argued that health care subsidies should be debated only after the government shutdown ends.

The survey found that 50% of Americans are dissatisfied with the government shutdown, and an additional 20% are angry. About 29% said they were either not concerned or happy about the closure, according to Reuters.

About 73% of Americans surveyed said they want insurance subsidies to continue, as Democrats have maintained, despite arguments that they increase the federal budget deficit. The numbers are little changed from a poll conducted earlier this month asking the same question, Reuters said.
