ATLANTA — Both Argentina and Egypt recognize the importance of Tuesday’s World Cup Round of 16 match in Atlanta.

“Egypt is a very good national team. They not only have players with great experience, but also a coach who has worked with us for many years,” Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said on Monday.

After Egypt take on Australia in a penalty shootout, they will also be at full strength against Lionel Messi and Argentina. Imam Ashour scored the only goal for the Pharaohs in the round of 32, finding the back of the net in the 13th minute.

Lionel Messi scored his 21st goal in the World Cup, leveling the score for Argentina.
In the 79th minute, defender Cristian Romero scored a free header to pull Argentina back into the game. It’s now 2-1.
The defending champions are still pushing for an equalizer against a determined Egyptian defense.
Mostafa Zico scored, including an end-to-end counter-attack, giving Egypt a 2-0 lead in the 67th minute, which the referee could not turn back.
Egypt looked to have scored and made it 2-0, but VAR intervened and called a foul on an Egyptian player about 100 yards from goal.
Lionel Messi and Argentina could not make it past the 10 minutes of the second half.
After beating Atlanta with 45 minutes remaining, Egypt brought on Hamdi Fathy in place of Imam Ashour.
The Pharaohs entered halftime with a 1-0 lead against defending champion Argentina. Lionel Messi also missed a penalty, making just four of his eight career World Cup matches, becoming the first player in history to miss twice in one tournament.
The Egyptian goalkeeper scored again, stopping Julian Alvarez’s shot from close range, and the Pharaohs maintained their lead in the 39th minute.
Argentina pressed even harder for an equalizer as Messi missed another penalty and tormented Egypt’s Mostafa Choubier, but had to make several big saves with two shots hitting the post.
Messi has missed yet another World Cup penalty, with Egyptian goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir denying the Argentine his 21st World Cup goal. That would have made it even.
Egypt took the lead in the 15th minute with a header. Yasser Ibrahim! This is the first time Argentina has fallen behind in this tournament.
There wasn’t much action in the opening stages at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, but Argentina showed a few touches inside Egypt’s penalty area.
