First Senate meeting since Graham’s death
The Senate reconvenes today with conspicuous absence. Sen. Lindsey Graham, 71, was suddenly passed Saturday, ending the term of one of the Senate’s most influential Republicans. A preliminary coroner’s report ruled that Graham’s cause of death was cardiac-related.
- Expect Monuments and Politics: Mr. Graham served as chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, responsible for the judiciary and appropriations, leaving one of the most important leadership positions in Congress vacant. No replacement plan has been announced, but Republican leaders are likely to face questions about committee leadership and the process to fill his Senate seat. Meanwhile, Graham’s death has increased the urgency for Mitch McConnell to return to the Senate. Mr. McConnell, 84, said he was fine.
