Latest updates on Mitch McConnell’s health and the dangers of speculation

Mitch McConnell was hospitalized several weeks ago, but there is little new information about his health.

Emergency medical services audio suggests McConnell, 84, was reported unconscious at his D.C. home in June and was placed on advanced life support.

The former Senate Majority Leader retired in 2024, but remains one of the oldest senators and has a long history of health problems. A spokesperson at the time said he had been hospitalized in February with flu-like symptoms. He also experienced several health scares in 2023, including two incidents in which he suddenly froze while speaking. He also fell in a Washington hotel in 2023 and was hospitalized with broken ribs and a concussion.

This hospitalization, combined with the little information available to Americans, has led to widespread speculation about his health.

While it’s normal to have questions about the health of public figures, especially politicians who can have a major impact on Americans’ daily lives and legal rights, experts say health speculation can also be harmful.

“When a very powerful elected official is observed in public with a medical problem, it’s natural to expect not only a public response from that leader, but also a public discussion,” Laura Pettiford, a marriage and family therapist and psychiatric nurse, previously told USA TODAY.

Mitch McConnell, Celebrities and Medical Privacy

McConnell is not the first politician or celebrity to undergo a public health examination.

President Donald Trump’s bruised and swollen legs, especially on his 80th birthday, have sparked debate about his ability to consider presidential duties. Then, in 2024, rumors spread on social media that Princess Kate had died after undergoing a scheduled abdominal surgery and avoiding royal duties. A few months later, she announced her cancer diagnosis.

Brad Fulton, a professor of business administration, data science and philanthropy at Indiana University Bloomington, previously told USA TODAY that public figures, including political leaders, “are entitled to a certain level of privacy regarding personal health matters.”

Everyone has boundaries, and in this day and age it’s easy to ignore other people’s boundaries. “In the age of social media, ordinary people have been trained not only to share their most private moments, but to expect the same from others,” psychologist Rene Carr previously told USA TODAY.

Still, politicians require more scrutiny than others, especially when their health directly affects their ability to perform their jobs.

McConnell is not seeking re-election after more than 40 years in office when his term expires this year, but whether he will be able to resume his role as a senator when he reconvenes for a vote on July 13 is still up in the air.

Politicians are held to higher standards

Many medical experts will give their opinions on celebrities appearing in the news. That said, “It’s not ethical for health care professionals to diagnose people from a distance, whether they’re celebrities or politicians,” Amy Morin, a psychotherapist, author of “13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do,” and podcast host, previously told USA TODAY. “However, it may be important to ensure that those in positions of power receive professional treatment to ensure that they still have the ability to perform the duties assigned to their position.”

In any case, Fulton pointed out that when considering individual health issues, “it is important to balance the public’s right to information with the individual’s right to privacy.”
