WASHINGTON – Former Vice President Kamala Harris has not yet ruled out running for president again.

The Democratic 2024 White House candidate was asked in an interview this week whether she could become the first female president, despite losing to President Donald Trump last year, before offering some of her strongest hints yet that she might reconsider running for the White House.

“Maybe,” she told the BBC, adding, “I’m not done yet. I’ve lived a life of service throughout my career, and it’s in my bones.”

The 61-year-old, who made history as the country’s first female, black and Asian-American vice president, sidestepped her proposal with several caveats, emphasizing that she has not yet decided what her political future will be.

“There are many ways to serve,” she said.

Harris was considering running for governor in her home state of California in 2026. But it closed that door in July, leaving another door open for the 2028 presidential election. Her decision not to run for governor effectively kickstarts what is likely to be a crowded Democratic primary to succeed President Trump in three years.

But after suffering a crushing defeat last year, the former vice president will face an uphill battle to regain support within his party and with voters across the country. A POLITICO poll conducted over the summer showed California Democrats slightly prefer current Governor Gavin Newsom over Harris for president.

“There are all sorts of polls out there that tell you different things,” Harris told the BBC. “I’ve never heard of a poll.”
