Experts explain what it means to be in a “parasocial relationship”
Have you ever felt stressed when a famous person you admire went through a breakup? You too may be in a “parasocial relationship.”
Jenny Molen is getting real about the challenges she faces as she navigates her separation from her husband of 18 years, Jason Biggs.
The “Crazy, Stupid, and Love” actress, 46, used her Substack “best friend experience with Jenny Molen” to share with her followers “lessons I’ve had to relearn over and over again throughout my life” in a May 25 newsletter. More than a week after her and Biggs’ reps confirmed their split, Moren said she’s thinking about ways to keep things moving in her life.
“When you’re young and ambitious, or just middle-aged with ADHD, it feels impossible to appreciate anything while you’re at it. The highest heights of my life have all come to me like a penny disappearing into a bottomless well,” she wrote.
“I would wait, maybe a minute or two until I heard something land, but before that, I would move on to the next thing,” Moren said. “I hope that what comes next will finally be the thing that heals me. It’s the kind of thing that makes me feel worthy and validated in a way that has always eluded me.”
She also explained that although she has an upcoming trip abroad, she has no intention of using it as an opportunity to do anything rash.
“I’m leaving for Italy on Wednesday. Eat, Pray, Love would be amazing given my current living situation. But I have no intention of finding myself or sleeping with a beautiful Italian stranger. I already have two half-Italians at home,” Molen wrote. “Actually, I’m just going because my friend invited me to a birthday party. It also happens to be my birthday.”
Moren and Biggs, who co-star in the new comedy film Influenced, met in 2007 while filming the Dane Cook and Kate Hudson romantic comedy My Best Friend’s Girl. The two married the following year, and their son Sid was born in February 2014, followed by their second son Laszlo in October 2017.
The reason for Biggs and Moren’s separation has not been disclosed, but a representative for the couple told USA TODAY on May 14, “They are on very good terms and remain focused on raising their two sons.”
