Vice President J.D. Vance is trying to dispel rumors of a marital rift with second lady Usha Vance after speculation spread online in recent weeks.

“I think it got a little carried away,” Vance said in an interview with NBC News after being asked about his dissatisfaction with the second lady being photographed without her wedding ring.

A spokesperson for the second woman told USA TODAY in a statement on Nov. 21 that she is “a mother of three young children who cooks a lot, bathes a lot and sometimes forgets her ring.” The Vance family has three children: Ewan, 8, Vivec, 5, and Mirabel, 3.

“It’s funny,” the vice president said, referring to the headline, “and I don’t think it’s actually harsh.” Vance also said that a few days after he first forgot his wedding ring, he accidentally left it again after his spouse took a shower.

“She was like, ‘Oh, if I don’t go back and get it, there’s going to be some crazy psychotic person talking about it on social media,'” Vance said. “And I thought, let’s just leave it to them. It’s not even worth the trouble of running upstairs. So we’re actually having a little fun with it. And we thought the whole social media viral cycle was kind of funny.”

Vance, who married his wife in 2014, told NBC News, “You take everything in life, the good and the bad.”

“It’s accepting that there will be some sacrifices, but there will also be some very good things that come with it,” he continued. “But our marriage is as strong as it’s ever been and I think Usha is really into it. And it’s kind of cool to see how she’s developed and evolved in this new role.”

The second lady sparked internet speculation last month when she visited the military base Camp Lejeune with first lady Melania Trump without her wedding ring. Despite the controversy on social media, Vance has been photographed numerous times with and without his wedding ring.

Vance called himself a “romantic” in an August interview with USA TODAY while opening up about pop star Taylor Swift’s summer engagement to NFL tight end Travis Kelce.

“I’m a romantic,” Vance said in an interview. “When I see two people who love each other get married, I wish them well and congratulate them, and I hope they have a long, healthy and happy life together.”
