Israeli government votes to fire the country’s attorney general

Date:

The Israeli government voted unanimously on Monday to fire Attorney General Gali Baharav Miara.

“The government unanimously approved Justice Minister Yalib Levin’s proposal to immediately end the terms of office of Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Minister Yalib Levin,” according to a Levin spokesperson.

Baharav Miara has been frequently criticized by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, accusing her of abusing her powers to undermine government policies and destabilize Israel’s rule of law.

Right-wing Israeli politicians have long been asking for her to be fired.

The Israeli Supreme Court issued an injunction on Monday to stop Baharav Miara’s firing. Levin’s move in March to begin procedures to dismiss her fierce criticism and legal challenges.

The role of the Attorney General in Israel holds its own authority to serve both as a government legal counsel and a public watchdog. This position is not a political appointment tied to the ruling coalition. It’s something the government has been trying to change as part of a controversial judicial overhaul.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
