British counterterrorism police have arrested five men, including four Iranian citizens, on suspicion of planning terrorism laws, a statement from London metropolitan police said on Sunday.
The investigation is linked to a suspected conspiracy to target a specific location, adding that the man was arrested during the attack at many addresses across the country on Saturday.
“This is a rapidly moving investigation and we are working closely with people on the affected sites to update them,” said Commander Dominik Murphy, head of the Met’s counterterrorism command.
Met police have not stated which sites are targets for suspected attacks. The man said he was arrested in the southern regions of Manchester and London, as well as in the south town of Swindon.
“The investigation is still in its early stages and is exploring various survey lines to establish potential motivations, as well as identifying whether there is any additional risk to the public associated with this issue,” Murphy said.
According to a police statement, the four men are Iranian nationals between the ages of 29 and 46 and are detained under British terrorist law. The nationality of the fifth man whose age is not offered is still established, and Met’s statement said he was instead in custody under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act.
All five remained in police custody.
“We understand that the public may be worried, and as always, I ask them to stay vigilant, whether they see or hear about anything related to them, and to contact us,” Murphy said.
