A fire and subsequent “massive explosion” at a New York City shipyard left at least 16 people injured, city fire officials said.

The explosion occurred around 4:20 p.m. local time at a shipyard in Staten Island, the city’s southernmost borough. The explosion occurred after firefighters were dispatched at 3:30 p.m. to reports of an employee trapped in a confined space, according to the FDNY.

At least 16 people were injured in the incident and taken to local hospitals. Three people, two firefighters and one non-firefighter, were seriously injured. Two firefighters suffered moderate injuries, department officials said. The remaining injuries appear to be minor.

Fire officials did not immediately respond to a request for information about the cause of the explosion.
