The new Air Force One takes off

President Donald Trump took the first flight of the new Air Force One, a $400 million gift from Qatar, but the aircraft has faced ethical and security objections from adversaries and allies alike. He jetted to North Dakota to tour the new Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary. The Boeing 747-B, dubbed the “Palace in the Sky,” will be used while Boeing builds two new Presidential 747s scheduled for 2028. It will then be housed in President Trump’s future library. “There are two things you can do. You can be subtle, or you can show off,” Trump said before boarding the jet.

“Screwworm fly factory” is in operation

The United States is going to war against the New World screwworm with an army of hundreds of millions of sterile flies. Joining Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum in Metapa, Mexico, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins presided over the opening of a $50 million, 22,000-square-foot “grass fly factory” to mass breed sterile flies to mate with wild flies to control the parasitic pest that has spread across the Texas border. The larvae burrow into the meat of cattle and can be fatal if untreated, devastating wildlife and causing financial ruin for ranchers.

So you want dentures?

Talk about sinking your teeth into a sandwich. A New Jersey customer is suing Grubhub after claiming he found dentures inside a Jersey Mike’s submarine. The lawsuit accuses both companies of negligence, saying the discovery of the dentures “embedded” in the sandwich caused customers “shock, disgust, emotional distress, nausea, loss of appetite, and physical disgust.” The lawsuit alleges that the driver was the culprit. He also requested a jury trial. Grubhub told USA TODAY it was “troubled” by the report and has terminated the driver’s contract.

Village People lead singer Victor Willis dies

Victor Willis, lead singer of the Village People, who helped define the 1970s disco movement, died on June 30th. He was 74 years old and helped write some of the group’s most iconic hits, including “In the Navy,” “Macho Man” and “YMCA.” The victory anthem has re-entered the cultural zeitgeist after President Donald Trump famously adopted the song at a campaign rally. Willis was one of the original seven members of the Village People, often performing in police uniforms among the group’s other camp-like costumes, including construction workers, cowboys, Native American chiefs, bikers, soldiers, and sailors.

LeBron James says goodbye to Los Angeles Lakers

The biggest name in basketball is now LeBron James, the biggest name in the NBA free agent sweepstakes. The four-time MVP, four-time champion and all-time leading scorer will return for his 24th season, but not with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he spent the past eight years. James, 41, thanked the team in a post on social media, adding: “I hope I’ve made them even a little proud during my tenure.” Now the big debate begins: where will he go? Among the oddsmakers’ top bets are the Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat, Detroit Pistons, and Cleveland Cavaliers. − Compiled and written by Robert Abitbol
