Former D-Texas Rep. Colin Allred will run again to represent Texas in the US Senate, his campaign announced on July 1.

Allred is the first prominent Democratic candidate in the Senate election, where he is likely to win public attention and funding. The former NFL linebacker previously ran for the Senate against R-Texas Senator Ted Cruz in 2024, earning 8.5 percent points.

If Allred wins the primary in March, he will face the winner of the Bruising GOP primary battle between incumbent John Cornyn, Sen. R-Texas and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Texas has long been a Republican base, but Democrats have seen the nation as within reach as the base of Democratic voters has grown over the past few election cycles.

“The people we chose to support — politicians like John Cornyn and Ken Paxton are too corrupt to care for us and too weak to fight for us,” he said in a video announcing his campaign. “We know that Washington is broken. The system is equipped, but there’s no need to do this.”

Allred could benefit from the nasty politics of the state’s upcoming GOP primary race. Paxton led Cornyn in early polls.

The Democrats are optimistic and can host a strong campaign against Paxton, who is kicked out into the scandal, if he is nominated.
