WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump and Christy Noem of the Department of Homeland Security have said the Trump administration is exploring CNN with an iPhone app that alerts immigration and customs enforcement agents in their area.

“We’re working with the Justice Department to actively encourage them to avoid law enforcement, operations,” Noem told reporters on July 1st.

The threat follows a CNN report detailing its creator, Joshua Aaron, that it was designed as an “early warning system” for users when Icelock is operating nearby. The app currently has around 20,000 users, many of whom live in Los Angeles. Los Angeles is the second most populous city in the country and is one of the hotbeds of Trump’s massive deportation of domestic immigrants.

The White House accused CNN of promoting apps that promote violence against law enforcement officials.

“We’re going to actually chase them and prosecute them in the (attorney general) PAM (Bondi) partnership.

Trump then sued CNN and the New York Times last week, doubling his threat, suing CNN and the New York Times, for a preliminary information report that found US airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear sites not devastating to Iran’s nuclear program as Trump portrayed.

“So they might get very prosecuted for that,” Trump said. “I think it’s totally illegal that they did there.”

Trump has a long history of lawsuits against media outlets. The legal basis for the Department of Justice to pursue accusations against CNN to report the existence of the app is unknown. Legal measures by the Trump administration will raise the issue of obvious first amendments regarding freedom of the press.

“This is an app published by iPhone users who want to download it,” CNN said in a statement on management threats. “There is nothing illegal about reporting the existence of this or other apps, and there are no reports that constitute promotions or other approvals for the app by CNN.”
