Bob Weir dies – Founding member of the Grateful Dead was 78 years old

Date:

Bob Weir, one of the founding members of the legendary rock band the Grateful Dead, has died at the age of 78 from “an underlying lung condition.”

Weir passed away “peacefully” on Saturday, January 10, after “bravely beating cancer,” according to a post shared on his Instagram account. A representative for Weir confirmed to USA TODAY the post was accurate, but no further information was available at this time.

“For more than 60 years, Bobby continued on his path: guitarist, vocalist, storyteller, and founding member of the Grateful Dead. Bobby will forever be a guiding force, and his unique artistry will change American music,” the post reads. “His work didn’t just fill a room with music; it was a warm ray of sunshine that filled the soul and built a sense of community, language, and family that generations of fans have carried with them.”

In October 2024, bassist Phil Lesh, another founding member of the Grateful Dead, passed away at the age of 84.

This is a developing story.
