Can Border Control unlock my phone using my Face ID? What do you know

  • US customs and border security scrutinized social media and political views, increasing searches and detention of travelers entering the country.
  • Travelers within 100 miles of US ports of entry have lost their rights to warrantless searches for electronic devices.
  • Citizens and legal residents cannot deny entry to deny access to devices, but non-citizens may.
  • Biometrics are less secure than device protection passwords at border intersections.

The growing reports of US customs and border security searches and detention raised concerns among travelers about what will happen when they try to enter the country.

For a long time, CBP had the authority to search the contents of electronic devices, verify someone’s identity or assess whether there is a national security risk. However, some immigration lawyers say such searches are more frequent under the Trump administration, but now they have been outrageous about social media profiles and political issues.

Travelers’ rights to warrantless searches have weakened within 100 miles of ports of entry, so everyone is questioned and electronic devices, including mobile phones, tablets and laptops, are searched by border investigators regardless of immigration status.

However, travelers can take steps to better protect digital privacy at their borders, such as turning off biometrics to unlock their phones. Here’s what you need to know.

Do I need to give my border agent a password?

Technically, no, but what happens next will depend on your immigration situation.

According to the US Civil Liberties Union knows your rights, US citizens and legal permanent residents cannot refuse to enter the country if they refuse to hand over or unlock their devices with a password. US airports and ports of entry. However, CBP can grab a phone and even keep it for weeks or months. (In this case, write down the officer’s name and badge number and ask for a receipt.)

However, non-citizen visa holders and tourists may be denied entry if they do not provide a password.

If you decide to unlock your phone with a password, enter it yourself instead of giving it to your agent. According to the ACLU website, “They may still require you to share it, but that’s a precautionary measure worth trying to take.”

Can CBP unlock mobile phones using biometrics?

It can occur due to the low safety of biometrics, but it is legally clear. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) believes that Face ID or Lock Devices fingerprints should be protected with a fifth amendment, which protects against self-inflict, but some courts have ruled otherwise. There are also cases where law enforcement forces people’s fingers to their phones to unlock them. So EFF can also occur in the Borders mentioned on its website. Agents can simply lift up the phone and unlock it easily.

The main point is that biometrics are not as secure as long passwords and encryption, so if you are crossing the border, it’s not the best idea.

How to turn off biometrics on your mobile phone

On Android:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Depending on the manufacturer, go to the Security or Privacy section
  3. Find and switch to biometric authentication

On iPhone:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Search Face ID & PassCode or Touch ID and PassCode
  3. Turn off your iPhone and unlock it and disable the function. This will set your phone to require a passcode to unlock it.

41 is a state that does not tax Social Security benefits.

0

play

Last month, April was National Social Security Month. I hope you enjoyed it and attended many Social Security parties. If not, it probably took you a little while to understand the security we provide to at least tens of millions of Americans. For example, we provide 31% of our income to people over the age of 65 (this is again the 90th anniversary of the program).

But you may wonder how much income Social Security provides and whether that income will be taxed. Read some answers.

Average Social Security Benefits

The average monthly social security benefit for retirees was $2,000, or nearly $24,000 as of April. Obviously, that’s not that much. However, that’s just average. If you get above average work, you can expect an above average advantage. Still, even the biggest Social Security benefits aren’t as generous as you might think, and are $5,108 a month (just over $61,000 a year).

Set up my Social Security account on the Social Security Agency (SSA) website to give you a clearer estimate of how much you can expect to receive from Social Security.

It is also worth noting that social security funding is shrinking. If nothing is done, the retiree may be reducing benefits in a few years. President Donald Trump has also made or proposed several changes to Social Security that could undermine the outlook for Social Security. (However, there are several ways to enhance the program.)

Now, regarding the issue of taxation. The good news is that most states don’t tax Social Security benefits.

41 states do not tax social security

There are 41 states (along with Washington, DC) that do not tax Social Security benefits. Check if your condition is in it:

  • Alabama
  • under
  • Arizona
  • Arkansa
  • California
  • Delaware
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Hawaii
  • Idaho
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Iowa
  • Kansas
  • Kentucky
  • Louisiana
  • main
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • Nebraska
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire
  • New Jersey
  • new york
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Ohio
  • Oklahora
  • Oregon
  • Pennsylvania
  • South Carolina
  • South Dakota
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • Virginia
  • Washington
  • Wisconsin
  • Wyoming

These nine states impose social security benefits

The following nine states do Social Security benefits for taxes. If your condition is in it, don’t start hyperventilating. In many of these states, many retirees believe their benefits are either very lightly taxed or not taxed at all.

For example, in Montana, benefits are partially taxed based on income levels, with one person exempt from income less than $25,000, and those who are married and co-submitted are under $32,000. In New Mexico, most seniors do not tax benefits at all, as singles earn less than $100,000 and married couples who jointly submit income less than $150,000 are exempt.

  • Colorado
  • Connecticut
  • Minnesota
  • Montana
  • New Mexico
  • Rhode Island
  • Yuta
  • Vermont
  • West Virginia

Don’t forget the federal government!

But the news isn’t all good because the federal government taxes social security benefits. Still, many retirees also escape the tax. Specifically, up to 85% of your benefits may be taxed by the federal government. The table below provides details.

Submitting AS

Combined income*

Percentage of taxable benefits

Single individual

$25,000 to $34,000

Up to 50%

Married and submitted jointly

$32,000 to $44,000

Up to 50%

Single individual

Over $34,000

Up to 85%

Married and submitted jointly

Over $44,000

Up to 85%

Data Source: Social Security Bureau. * “Combined income” is half of adjusted gross income (AGI) and non-tax benefits and half of Social Security benefits.

Make sure you read the table correctly. I don’t see a 50% or 85% tax rate. 85% of taxes are never dropped due to taxes. Instead, these are part of your profits and could ultimately be taxed.

Big tax photos

It’s important to handle the taxes you face well, but don’t always consider your big tax picture and just focus on a tax of a kind. For example, states may tax Social Security, but may not tax income or property. Conversely, you may be happy to not pay property taxes in your state, but your state’s income tax rate may be high. After all, every state needs to generate revenue.

It’s a simple trick and costs $22,924 each year. Once we learn how to maximize Social Security benefits, we can retire with confidence in the peace of mind we want. participateStock AdvisorFor more information about these strategies, see

Fires occur in Louisiana’s historic Notway unification: Report

0

Local reports show that a fire broke out at the historic plantation museum in Eberville Parish, Louisiana on May 15th, with the full extent of the damage unknown.

New Orleans supporters and news station WBRZ reported that the flames at the Notwai Resort Plantation House at White Castle began around 2pm local time. There were no guests at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.

The president of Iberville Parish Chris Daigle said staff saw smoke on the second floor of the museum and later returned to the entire room, engulfed in flames. About 40 firefighters responded to the scene and found a fire consuming the building’s south wing.

“The good thing is that the house was built at different stages. The South Wing may differ from the heart of the house and may allow for more preservation in the heart of Notway,” Daigle told WBRZ.

Daigul said the flames would eventually reach the attic on the third floor, and would destroy the effort until the evening, New Orleans supporters reported.

USA Today has contacted the Iberville Parish Fire & Emergency Services department for comments.

What is Noteway Resort?

Louisiana’s Notway Resort is a former slave statistics and is one of the largest Civil War mansions in the South.

Built in 1859, the museum is located in White Castle, between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. It spans 31 acres across the resort and offers a variety of venues, amenities and services, including tennis courts and 40 overnight rooms.

“The mansion’s enormous white pillars and spectacular balconies are guarded over the Mississippi River, but to the north it overlooks the oak-covered lawn, cleaned by a spectacular three-storey rotunda,” the resort’s website reads.

Hundreds of slaves built and staffed plantations for the family of Louisiana’s prominent Planterjon Hampden Randolph.

Trump and Abu Dhabi Ink Partnership to Building a Large-Scale AI Data Center Complex in the United Arab Emirates

0

CNN

The United States and the United Arab Emirates will be able to build a large data center complex in Abu Dhabi, increasing artificial intelligence capabilities with a capacity of 5 gigawatts.

The agreement, released Thursday when President Donald Trump visited the UAE, is set to mark the deployment of the largest data centers outside the United States, according to the Commerce Department. It starts with a 1 Gigawatt AI data center, but ultimately covers 10 square miles.

The project is also expected to expand the footprint of American AI and cloud companies in the Middle East, allowing them to better serve the Global South.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang was found at one of Trump’s UAE conferences, but the company has not been appointed by the Commerce Department’s announcement. Nvidia declined to comment.

The success of US tech companies is seen as key to maintaining the US position as a global superpower, so Trump has worked to drive AI investment.

“By extending the world-leading US technology stack to key strategic partners in the region, the agreement is a major milestone in achieving President Trump’s vision for US AI control,” Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said in a statement.

The UAE also says it wants to become a global leader in artificial intelligence by 2031.

Prior to Trump’s visit, UAE Education Minister Sarah Al Amiri said the country is trying to diversify its economy, particularly in the areas of AI and technology. Investing in AI infrastructure is considered important to ensure the future of the region’s post-oil.

The White House also announced an agreement on Thursday that pledged to build or fund a US data center that the UAE is “at least big and powerful” as the UAE’s.

The brand may already be in the chopping block

It has been reported in Telecommunications Jaguar’s infamous recent brand, with the core pillars of the British automaker’s brand being dumped and redoed, may be on the verge of being thrown out and redoing when Jaguar searches for a new ad agency. The brand’s brand introduced a strange pop art ad with models and cars only, the new Jaguar logo and a polarized type 00 EV concept, along with the end of the “Reaper” Jaguar logo and the entire Sniffy Gentleman’s buyer profile lined with the tweed. The Internet had a field day with a provocative new direction.

Ah, Jaguar has basically pledged to sell new vehicles for two years. (Here in the US, dealers will sell existing inventory until the end of this year.) So it’s a strange time for Jaguar, and it could become a stranger if the company decides to move in yet another new direction.

At the time of this publication, Jaguar and the new ad campaign and brand reboots, Accenture Song, head of the Accenture Song, have not seen the story, so nothing may have changed. (The Jaguar and Accenture songs have a deal that will obviously be executed by 2026.) And while the brand was certainly odd and a serious break from what everyone associates with the Jaguar brand, it achieved its main goal. Think about that. When was your last thought about Jaguar?

Jaguar probably needs to stick in a new direction for now, just because backtracking reinforces the impression that he doesn’t know what it’s doing. And the old Jaguar was clearly not working. Whatever the nostalgia everyone has for the brand and its previous GT and sports cars.

Again, the idea of the future is that the Jaguar sells fewer cars at a higher price, moving from a daily Lexus or Mercedes competitor to something like the Aston Martin Wright. The company is said to be more profitable with lower volumes than higher volumes. It’s become a hot topic on the current brand’s side. This can be enough to fork over 6 digits of a new Jag.

Thunder vs. Nuggets: Ill Jamal Murray, Denver Reach’s 7th heaven

0

play

Jamal Murry Ill, Michael Porter Jr. Hurt and their season in the season, the Denver Nuggets defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder 119-107 in Game 6 on Thursday, forcing Game 7 in the NBA Playoff Western Conference Semi-Final Series.

Denver dominated the second half of the wildly enthusiastic game.

Murray got sick on Wednesday, feeling sick and received medicine and liquids from the team’s medical staff. He didn’t take part in his regular pre-match routine, but he scored 11 of his 25 points in the first quarter and fought through illness.

Porter, who normally suffers a shoulder injury that walks off players for weeks, scored 10 points.

And the 2023 champion, the Nuggets, will not be able to play another game without the performance of MVP finalist Nikola Jokic, who has collected 29 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists. Christian Brown added 23 points and Julian Stroser, who hadn’t scored more than nine points in the playoff games this season, scored 15 points in the second half for the Nuggets.

The Thunder struggled offensively in the second half after scoring 61 points in the first half. In the final two quarters, Oklahoma City scored 46 points, 19-50 from the field.

Thunder MVP finalist Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored a game-high 32 points, while Big Man Chet Holmgren scored 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Game 7 is Sunday in Oklahoma City (3:30pm, ABC).

After winning a franchise record 68 games this season, the Thunder, the top seed in the West for the second consecutive season, is under pressure. They lost in the conference semi-finals last year and preferred to reach the conference finals.

The home team wins Game 7 with the best 73.9% (113-40) at 73.9%. However, in the past few seasons, it has been common for road teams to win Game 7. Golden State did it in the first round this season against Houston, which happened twice in 2024, 2023, 2022 and 2021.

Keep up with all the highlights of Game 6:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exlc-o-qzew

Nuggets have been forced to play Game 7 for 12 minutes. Denver has a 90-82 lead with the Thunder heading into the fourth quarter. Denver’s Julian Strausser was explosive from the bench, earning all eight of his points in the third quarter. Jamal Murray added 22 points and Nikola Djokic already has a double double with 18 points and 13 rebounds.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has up to 24 points for Oklahoma City despite playing in four fouls. Chet Holmgren also has a double double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Oklahoma City’s Lu Dort went on to run out in the second quarter, hitting a 23-foot 3 and heading the Sunder for a 61-58 lead to halftime. Dort’s shot ended the quarter after finishing the Nuggets 12-0 run. However, the big storyline that comes out from the first half is Shy Gilgas Alexander’s foul trouble. Gilgeous-Alexander scored his fourth foul in the first half with 1:29 remaining and quickly checked out the game with a team high 14 points. This is the first time since October 2022 that he has won four personal fouls in the first half. He is not the only one. Isaiah Haltenstein (2 points) and Jaylin Williams (8 points) each have three fouls, while Jalen Williams (6 points) has two. On the bright side, Gilgeous-Alexander has not been fouled out so far this year.

Meanwhile, Christian Brown leads the Nuggets with 15 points, shooting six-tenths, three- to three-quarters from the field. He also has four rebounds, three assists and three steels over the four quarters. Jamal Murray added 13 points, while Nicola Djokic has double watched with 12 points and 7 rebounds.

Despite surrendering five turnovers in the first quarter and handing over the nuggets by 10 points, the Thunder are within three points since Denver entered 31-28 in the second quarter. The Nuggets shot 54.5% from the field and four out of three to four, led by Jamal Murray. The Thunder shoots the same 54.5% from the field, adding three out of three to three. Lu Dort leads Thunder with 5 points.

Jamal Murray may not be feeling that hot, but he is heading for a sc fever start with Nuggets’ do-die game 6 with the Thunder. Murray held the contest with a four-point play after being fouled on a three-point shot by Isaiah Hartenstein. He has a game-high nine points throughout the opening six minutes of play. Denver extended the lead with a 7-0 run, extending the lead with 6:32 left in the first quarter after the Nuggets scored by intercepting and scoring with consecutive bad passes from Oklahoma City’s Lugenzdort and Scheizil Jualexander respectively.

Denver is sticking to the same starting lineup that it has used throughout the 2025 NBA playoffs. Guard Jamal Murray was listed as suspicious in the Nuggets’ injury report due to illness, but he’s trying it out.

Trump floats possible new F-55 warplane and F-22 upgrades

0

Doha, Qatar
Reuters

The US is investigating the development of a twin-engine fighter known as the F-55 and the upgrade to a Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor, known as the F-22 Super, US President Donald Trump said Thursday.

Trump was speaking at a meeting of business leaders, including Doha’s Boeing Head and Space Chief Jare. This is the day after announcing a series of business transactions, including orders from Qatar for the 160 Boeing Commercial Jet.

Trump called the upgrade of the F-55 to a Lockheed F-35 and a new development of comments that the US military giants of “best value” alternatives will appear to speak repeatedly after losing to Boeing on behalf of the F-22 Superfighter.

He also highlighted the role of a new aviation-dominated platform called the F-47, which was recently awarded to Boeing, opening a new tab and said the US is also considering upgrading the stealth fighter F-22, which it is designed to replace.

“We’re going to do the F-55. If we get the right price, we’ll need to get the right price. This is two engines, a super upgrade to the F-35 and we’ll do the F-22,” Trump said.

“I think the most beautiful fighter jet in the world is the F-22, but we’re going to do the F-22 Super and it’s going to be a very modern version of the F-22 Fighter Jet,” he said.

“We’re going to use it pretty quickly,” he added.

Trump awarded Boeing the F-47 contract last month. It is an alternative to the Lockheed F-22 Stealth Fighter, sandwiched between a cohort of drones and featuring crew aircraft considered America’s most advanced or sixth-generation fighter.

Boeing Kelly Autoberg President and CEO, US President Donald Trump and Chairman and CEO of GE Aerospace Larry Culp will be attending a roundtable conference in Doha, Qatar on May 15, 2025.

Lockheed Martin, who lost to Boeing in its Next Generation Air Control (NGAD) race and dropped out of another contest for the new US Navy stealth jet, said he is considering plans for a “five-generation plus” fighter.

CEO James Taiclet told analysts last month that Lockheed is considering how to apply technology developed for the lost bid on the F-47 contract to the F-35, providing 80% of its capacity at half the cost.

“We’re basically trying to take the chassis and turn it into a Ferrari,” he told analysts.

A Lockheed spokesperson said, “We appreciate President Trump’s support for the F-35 and F-22 and will continue to work closely with the administration to realize its vision for aviation advantage.”

Lockheed is increasing cockpit display and processing power amidst an upgrade of delay technology and software for existing generation of F-35 Strike Fighters.

Analysts said it is not immediately clear how Trump’s list of potential developments fits known programs and spending plans and the timing of existing programs.

Nick Cunningham, an aerospace analyst at agency partner, said the F-55 could instead refer to the F/A-XX program aimed at replacing the US Navy’s aging Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet Fleet with Service’s own sixth-generation stealth fighter.

The Navy and Congress are fighting the administration to keep the plans moving forward, Reuters reported Wednesday. The bidder announcement was already expected in March.

The funding for the radar evacuation F-22, designed to fight other fighter planes, has been hectic debate for years as Congress speeded up his retirement to block plans by the Air Force and focus on the next generation blueprint that became the F-47.

While a major upgrade to an out-of-production F-22 is expensive, Trump’s mention of the two engines means that the F-55 is not an easy derivative of the single-engine F-35, but it is an ambitious new platform, analysts said.

“If you add an engine to the F-35, it’s a new aircraft,” said Francis Tsusa, a UK-based defense analyst.

Ju-dean sees the wounds of the policeman’s boyfriend

Prosecutors say Karen read that he hit John O’Keefe in her SUV and died. On Thursday, medical inspectors testified about the wounds on the officers’ entire body and what they present.

play

Karen’s ju judge took place in a murder trial in Massachusetts and gained the closest vision of the man’s battered body at the heart of the case.

Prosecutors predicted a photo of 45-year-old Boston police officer John O’Keefe’s bloody, wounded body, and continued to claim that the 45-year-old lady attacked her boyfriend with her black Lexus in drunken rage, putting him in the snow.

Reed’s lawyers say she was framed outside Canton, Massachusetts, due to a death that took place in January 2022, home to fellow Boston police officers.

O’Keefe’s wounds are a key point in the exam, which lies in the question of whether he was hit by something he read or hurt in other ways. Reed’s lawyers claimed that O’Keefe was beaten by other officers and that some wounds came from the animal attack.

Prosecutors called Massachusetts medical inspector Irini Scordi-Bello to testify about the wounds found along the officer’s body. Some were in line with the fall behind, she said. However, according to Scordi Bello, amputations of his arms, eyelids and nose are not evidence of a fall, and could be “consistent” with the punch.

He died of blunt trauma and hypothermia, Scordi Bello said, based on an autopsy.

Prosecutors’ testimony about O’Keefe’s wounds are seen the night before O’Keefe’s death, the day after the bomb was entered, allegedly made to the first responder, and the ju judges were seen with a state reading car that was damaged after O’Keefe’s death.

The Norfolk County case is the second trial of a reading material surrounding O’Keefe’s death. The 2024 trial ended with the judges. The long-standing legal saga of whodunnit has won massive plots from true crime fans around the country, spurring an array of podcasts, movies and TV shows.

Here’s more what happened on the 16th day of his trial from Dedham, Massachusetts:

Judge Beverly Canon rejected the ju appellant a few minutes before 4pm and heard debate from the defense team about new information he received from the forensic company openings about Reed’s Lexus infotainment system.

The revised data from the system shows a few seconds different time from the original lawyer, according to the original defense counsel Robert Alessi. Despite its small, changes change the timeline analysis and defense cases, Alessi told Canon. He asked to remove the report from trial.

Prosecutors are pushing for information to be included. They argue that the data does not change the analysis. They said that is an example of the dispersion between a Lexus watch and an iPhone.

Prosecutors also asked for more time to review new materials from the engineering and crash reconstruction company ARCCA, which they received on May 7th. The prosecutor requested that the open witness testify after the ARCCA witness. The defense said accepting the request would be “an extraordinary situation.”

Read’s defense team appeared to question whether O’Keefe had died elsewhere from where his body was found. Attorney Robert Alessi asked Scordi Bello about whether hypothermia could be caused by something other than a cold climate.

She suggested that sepsis, or the body’s extreme response to infection, was one of the only other reasons besides cold exposure. Scordi-Bello told defense attorney Robert Alessi he couldn’t come up with a “hypothetical scenario” for how a person died, instead relying on anatomical evidence combined with police reports.

The defense was asked whether O’Keefe’s head injury coincided with retreating on cold ground, Scordi Bello said.

“If there’s autumn in the back, that injury can be produced very well,” she told the ju judge.

But O’Keefe would not have lasted as his right arm, eyelids and nose fell back and smashed his head, Scordi Bello confirmed. O’Keefe’s eye injury was “consistent” with punches, she said.

The ulcer found in O’Keefe’s stomach supported the medical examiner’s conclusion that O’Keefe had partially died of hypothermia. Scordi-Bello told the defense that it was “potential” that the ulcer could have been caused by alcohol consumption.

During the prosecutor’s redirect, Scordi Bello said she noticed during her evaluation that she was allegedly aware of her saying, “I hit him, I hit him, I hit him.” She was also said that the taillights of the readings had been found by O’Keefe’s body.

Prosecutor Hank Brennan baked Scordi Bello on whether O’Keefe’s knee bruising and eye injuries matched “side swipes” and cuttings from the glass. She said, “Everything is possible.”

Scordi-Bello testified about the injuries found on O’Keefe’s body during an autopsy. It includes cuts in his upper right eyelid, scraps and tears in his nose, swelling of his bloody eyelids, and cuts ranging from a few millimeters to a maximum of 7 cm in his right arm.

O’Keefe also had scuffs on the back of his head and on the outside of his right knee. She said none of the scraps were more than skin deep. His rib bone appeared to have been fractured from an attempted resuscitation. He died of blunt trauma and hypothermia, Scordi Bello said, based on an autopsy. The prosecutor’s office could not determine whether his death was the result of an accident, a murder, or something else. O’Keefe’s temperature has dropped from its normal temperature of about 96.8 degrees to 80.1 degrees.

Based on her autopsy, Scordi Bello said O’Keefe died of blunt trauma and hypothermia. The prosecutor’s office could not determine whether his death was the result of an accident, murder, or something else.

Scordi Bello said O’Keefe likely lost consciousness at some point after the trauma of dull force.

During cross-examination, Hartnett confirmed that he reviewed fragments of O’Keefe’s clothing collected from the crime scene by Michael Proctor, who sent a crude text message while investigating O’Keefe’s death. Proctor was fired in March for unrelated reasons.

Read’s lawyers appeared to question whether Proctor properly handled the evidence. During previous testimony from a Massachusetts trooper, Reid’s defense appears to have increased the likelihood that Proctor planted a fragment of her taillight at the crime scene.

Courttv has been covering Read and criminal investigation lawsuits since early 2022, when O’Keefe’s body was found outside his home in Canton, Massachusetts.

You can see Courttv’s live feed of read court proceedings from Norfolk Superior Court in Dedham, Massachusetts. Minutes begin at 9am.

American basketball player Jarred Show could face death penalty after being arrested in Indonesia on suspicion of drug smuggling

0

Jakarta, Indonesia
AP

An American basketball player from the Indonesian League has been arrested on suspicion of allegedly attempting to smuggle illegal drugs into the country, police said Thursday.

Southeast Asian countries have very strict drug laws, and convicted smugglers are sometimes executed by firing squads.

Dwayne Shaw, 34, from Dallas, Texas, was arrested on May 7 after police attacked an apartment in the Tangerang Regency, just outside the capital Jakarta, seized 132 cannabis candies, said Ronald Sipayun, the chief of Socarnohata Airport Police.

The arrest followed hints from the airport’s habits that Shoe reported receiving a suspicious airway package from Thailand, Sipayong said. Cannabis has been decriminalized in Thailand since November 2024. Under Indonesia’s anti-drug law, Shaw faces life sentence or death penalty if convicted, Sipayun said.

Videos circulating on social media say that Show wore a black T-shirt and shorts and resisted him pushing out by the police to scream “Help me…help!” When he was about to be arrested.

Shaw has played for several clubs in the Indonesian Basketball League since 2022 and signed a contract with Tangerang Hawk last year. During his questioning, he told police that Shipayon said he wanted to share cannabis candy with fellow basketball players.

He said the candy contains a total weight of 869 grams (30.6 ounces) of illegal cannabinoids in the package.

“We are still conducting research to uncover the international drug network behind this case and to stop its distribution,” Sipayun said.

The show did not make a statement when he was wearing an orange T-shirt and mask of a detainee whose hands were tied up when he issued a statement by authorities at a press conference Wednesday.

Tangerang Hawks manager Ticky Swantychno told reporters Thursday that he regretted what was done by the show and that the club fired him immediately when it breached the contract.

Indonesia’s Basketball League has banned the show from playing for life, its chairman, Budisatrio Doziwandon, said.

“We don’t tolerate any player, manager or anyone in the field of drug involvement. There is no space for drug users in the basketball world,” says Djiwandono.

The United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime says Indonesia is a major drug-dense hub despite having some of the world’s strictest drug laws.

About 530 people are on death row in Indonesia, with data from the Ministry of Immigration Corrections showing due to drug-related crimes, mainly 96 foreigners. Indonesia’s last execution was held in July 2016, with Indonesians and three foreigners.

Are reward credit cards worth an additional fee?

0

play

Heather Bernhardt is the owner of a small business. But she has rants as a business owner and a client.

She can’t stand the growing practices of companies charging consumers extra fees to use credit cards.

“If you own a small store, if you own a store, the restaurant, and you should charge me an extra fee to use a credit card, I will not be back,” Bernhard said in a Tiktok post. “Eat. Good customer service.”

Bernhardt’s rage regarding credit card surcharges is not unique.

In two separate national surveys of consumers, shoppers said they are tired of nickel and dimming to pay the extra fees that were the cost of their business.

What are credit card extra charges?

According to an article on Wallethub, the practice of charging consumers with additional fees for transactions is permitted under a 2012 settlement between credit card networks and a group of US merchants. Additional charges range from 1.5% to 3%.

According to Walethub editor John Kiernan, when more consumers were moving to e-commerce and higher businesses and restaurants were dealing with higher costs, the practice of passing credit card transaction fees to consumers began to be handed over to consumers during the Covid-19 pandemic, by adding additional charges to their bills.

However, payments in 2012 only covered credit card transactions, and did not cover debit cards or prepaid gift cards. The Visa and Mastercard rules prohibit transaction fees for debit card transactions, but enforcement is rather lax, especially as it is not widely known among small businesses and consumers, Keenan told USA Today. In the case of credit card transaction fees, consumers are required to be notified in some way before the transaction takes place. If not, consumers can file a dispute with the credit card issuer, Keenan said.

Additionally, some states, such as Connecticut, Maine and Massachusetts, have state laws that prohibit additional consumer credit cards.

Customers do not like being nickel and dimmed at an additional charge

The use of credit card extra charges is actually widely used and also causes widespread discomfort.

A recent survey by Wallethub says 87% of people are “duck with nickel when asked to pay an additional fee for processing their credit card payments.” More than four in five Americans said they would not use credit cards if they were charged to pay with credit cards and two in three were charged.

More than three in five also said they thought it was unfair for merchants to hand over payment processing fees to customers.

Kiernan said the practice of adding additional credit card payments, or offering discounts on cash, common at many gas stations, has grown in recent years.

“I think businesses and consumers are always pushing boundaries and trying to test the water to see what they can get away with,” Keenan said.

When companies began to see other companies charging extras without much backlash, they started doing that too, he said.

In the JD Power 2025 US Merchant Services Satisfaction Survey released in January, 34% of merchants said they added an additional fee for customer purchases made using credit cards.

In the latest data from the JD Power US Credit Card Satisfaction Survey, 82% of shoppers who said they faced an additional fee to use their credit card chose alternative payment methods. John Cabell, managing director of Payments Intelligence, said the investigation did not ask if these customers had left the deal.

Consumers get mad at extra charges

Consumers don’t like such add-ons, said Ted Rothman, senior industry analyst at Bankrate.

“Additional charges are a type of way to raise prices without increasing prices,” Rothman told USA Today. They may be legal, but “in the court of public opinion… most people frown at add-ons of all kinds.”

Consumers may complain about management and social media. Social media “is actually even worse because I’m talking to all my friends about this bad experience,” he said.

Most shoppers are not carrying cash and are fighting both inflation and other rising costs, Rothman said. Businesses are facing similar headwinds.

“People already feel like it’s costly enough, so businesses are trying to transfer some of their costs to their customers,” he said.

Rothman said many customers are paying extra because they don’t carry cash or have debit cards.

But some customers are pushing back.

Rothman said he doesn’t understand the company’s philosophy of adding a surge because it angers customers and likely loses sales.

“We’re not back in a cash-first economy,” Rothman said. He added that such extra charges are “a sales deterrent.”

Bernhard owns Blackbird Boutique in Marine City, Michigan. She sells women’s clothing, gift items and small home decorations. Bernhardt says it’s difficult enough to compete as a small business owner and wants to please its customers. She is not working on credit card extras.

However, she was angry enough after visiting another store that recently charged her to use her debit card – she didn’t know she wasn’t allowed until the reporter informed her – that she had put her rant on Tiktok. In her video, Bernhard said that companies should either eat the cost or “bake it” at the price of the item.

Such extra charges are bad for the business, she said.

“We probably lost a customer and we haven’t returned the customer and won future sales,” she said.

Are cash rewards or reward credit cards worth an additional fee?

If more consumers have to pay an additional fee, is it worth using their credit card to earn cashback rewards and other perks?

Rothman said he needs to consider how much consumers are paying for what they earn from their surcharges and compensation. He also said consumers will need to pay their credit card bills each month to avoid paying additional interest fees.

But credit cards can also offer additional perks like extended warranty, purchase protection and travel insurance, so that’s something to consider, Rothman said.

Consumers can also go ahead by choosing the right credit card, Keenan said.

“If you have the right cards or a collection of the right cards, you set yourself up to ignore a lot of this,” he said. “There are many cards that offer 5% cashback in custom categories. You can choose two categories per quarter. They are the categories you spend the most.”

He said that after using those cards for a general purchase, “even if you get charged an extra fee, it’s still coming out ahead.”

The extra fee may be more than what you earn from the reward, so you won’t be ahead of every deal, he said. But there are credit cards that also offer first points and cashback bonuses, he said.

“If you’re loading up a small purchase, even if they’re adding a small extra charge, if you’re saving $1,000 at the end of the day, it’s still out ahead,” he said.

Some consumers may use multiple cards, or debit or credit cards. Some consumers can also make automatic payments through a bank account or link their checking account to a retailer or business account to receive a discount.

Kiernan suggests you have a credit card with good rewards and hold a debit card in your hand when retailers want to charge an extra credit card.

However, he warns that debit card transactions will be coming out of your checking account immediately, and remember that debit card fraud protection is not as strong as credit cards.

Trump announces more than $200 million deals between the United States and the United Arab Emirates. Donald Trump

0

Donald Trump has announced more than $200 billion in total deals between the United States and the United Arab Emirates, including a $14.5 billion commitment between Boeing, GE Aerospace and Etihad Airways.

The White House said Thursday that Boeing and GE received a commitment from Etihad Airlines to invest in 28 US-made Boeing 787s and 777 times more aircraft to buy 28 Boeing aircraft with GE engines.

“By including the next-generation 777x in the fleet plan, this investment deepens the long-standing commercial aviation partnership between the UAE and the United States, promoting American manufacturing and driving exports,” the White House said.

Etihad CEO Antonoaldo Neves said last month that the airline plans to add 20-22 new planes to its fleet of around 100 aircraft this year.

Etihad, owned by Abu Dhabi’s $225 billion wealth fund ADQ, has undergone multi-year restructuring and management reforms, but is expanding under Neves.

He said 10 of this year’s new aircraft are the Airbus A321LRS, which will be launched by the carrier on Monday and will open in August. The rest includes six Airbus A350s and four Boeing 787s.

The news follows Wednesday’s announcement that Boeing has landed its largest deal on widebody planes after securing $96 billion worth of Boeing jet orders from Qatar.

As the US president approaches the end of his multi-day tour in the Middle East, deal production takes place. The controversy went on a visit after the president announced earlier this week that he planned to accept a $400 million luxury jumbo jet from the Qatar government and raised many ethical concerns.

Since then, Trump has doubled his plans to accept the plane as a new Air Force, and has finally moved it to his presidential library. “We are the United States of America, and I think we should have the most impressive plane,” he said Wednesday.

James Comey is under investigation by Secret Service after the “8647” post

0

play

WASHINGTON – US law enforcement officials said on May 15 that former FBI director James Comey was considering a social media post depicting the image of “8647.”

According to Reuters, Comey, who was fired by Trump in 2017, later defeated the Post, saying he didn’t know that the obvious political message could be linked to violence.

In American terminology, number 86 can be used as a verb. This means throwing someone out of the bar because they’re drunk or disordered, and 47 is the 47th President Trump code. Some Trump supporters interpreted it as a message to vehemently remove Trump from Trump due to his assassination, Reuters reported.

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary states on its website that one of the recent meanings of the term is “to kill,” but it did not adopt it “due to its relative up-to-dateness and modestness of use.”

The Secret Service, which is responsible for protecting the president, said it knew Comey’s post but didn’t appreciate its meaning.

“The Secret Service actively investigates anything that can be considered a potential threat to parents. We are aware of social media posts by former FBI directors and take rhetoric as seriously as this.

Federal law enforcement officials told USA Today that the Secret Service would send agents to question Comey about his post, and would do the same to anyone posting potential threats about the former or current president. Officials said they had been conditioned on anonymity to discuss ongoing investigation issues.

Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem, who oversees secret services, said at X the DHS and Secret Service “will investigate this threat and respond appropriately.”

National Intelligence director Tulsi Gabbard went further and said he believes Comey should be placed behind the bar for the post.

When asked if the former FBI director believed he should “be in prison,” Gabbard said, “I.”

“I am very concerned about the president’s life as the other influential person he has, the man of his height, the experiences he has, the things that propaganda media has built him up,” Gabbard said. “We have already seen attempts to assassinate him. I am very concerned about his life and James Comey, in my view, should be accountable and be placed behind the bar for this.”

Kash Patel, current FBI director, said at X that his agency would be in touch with Secret Service on Post and “providing all the support you need.”

Others have become more clear when assigning malignant meaning to Comey’s post, saying it was a call for Trump to assassinate.

Comey posted an Instagram photo of No. 8647 formed by shells on the beach.

“A cool shell formation on my beach walk,” Comey said.

But after a stir from Trump supporters, Comey defeated the Post, saying he thought it was just a “political message.”

“I didn’t realize I was linking those numbers to violence. It never happened to me, but I’m against any kind of violence, so I took down the post,” Comey said.

Comey did not call or text from USA Today for comment.

Earlier in his first term in May 2017, Trump fired Comey. As director of the FBI, Kaby was leading an investigation into possible conspiracy in a Trump presidential campaign with Russia to help Trump get elected.

As prices rose, retailers tightened purchase restrictions

0

play

Gold has become such a hot item, so Costco seems to be limiting how much its members can buy.

Warehouse retailers began selling 24 carat gold bars to their members in 2023. Currently, that limit, as previously reported by Business Insider, is changed to one per transaction, and up to two bars every 24 hours, as seen on the retailer’s website.

A price tag for a 1 ounce gold bar made in South Africa? $3,279.99 was much higher than the $2,000 it had done 19 months ago, shortly after Costco began selling. However, since gold prices have risen by more than 70% in the meantime, it is understandable that price rise. This reached a record high in April.

Another listing will limit members to one item per transaction, with 1 ounce Gold Bar Pumps for Swiss Fortuna Veriscan Ladies falling from the 24-hour limit of 5 items per transaction, limiting members to one item per transaction, limiting up to two items per 24 hours. According to an archived snapshot in the list, there were two purchase caps per membership in September 2023.

Retailers also have restrictions on other precious metals, including:

  • 1 oz of American Eagle Gold Coin ($3,329.99, 1 per transaction, 2 per 24 hours)
  • 10 oz silver bar ($359.99, 1 per transaction, 10 per 24 hours)

One unlimited option is the small 5 gram gold bar with an 18 carat gold chain, priced at $1,149.99.

Costco did not respond to a request for comment from USA Today.

Costco: Consumers are still snapping gold sticks

Goldbar sold out constantly when it first became available online in 2023. “When loaded onto the site, they usually go away within a few hours, limiting two per member,” Richard Galanti, then finance director at Costco, told analysts during the company’s revenue call in September 2023, according to a transcript from the intelligence of the S&P Global Market.

Gary Millerchip’s Chief Financial Officer said that gold sales and other categories, including jewelry, rose double digits in the 24 weeks ending February 16th. The retailer also began selling Silver Canada coins in March 2024.

Costco can earn between $100 million and $200 million a month by selling Wells Fargo Equity Research, estimated in April 2024.

If gold prices remain high, the bar could remain popular purchases if prices rise by more than 1% on Thursday, May 15th and economic uncertainty continues.

“I know things are getting weird when moms started focusing on Gold Bars at Costco, like toilet paper in 2020,” excluded one social media user.

Comedian Theo Fong performs during Trump’s visit to Qatar army

0

play

The surprise stand-up set by comedian Theo Fong at a military base in Qatar during President Donald Trump’s visit is reportedly grateful to his 19-year-old son, Baron Trump.

The host of the “This Last Weekend” podcast performed with the US Air Force for the military at Al Dade Air Force Base in Doha, where Instagram stories were confirmed on May 15th. He posted a photo with a service member in uniform, and a photo by Trump himself captioned, “Talkin Haircare.”

According to the Associated Press and the Daily Beast, in his daily life in which the president was away, Fong joked about drugs, homosexuality and developmental disorders. Some of the riffs were about smoking cocaine from the back of “mixed babies” and “the next 9/11 should happen,” the AP reported.

“I don’t care if you’re politically correct,” Fong told the troopers, according to the Associated Press.

Fong also developed Down syndrome and called the US Navy “gay,” the AP reported. He also mentioned the low crime rate in Qatar. Police said that they cannot identify the perpetrator because everyone is Mohammed and wears the same white robe. He called them “Ku Klux Sandsman,” Ap reported.

When Trump arrived on stage, he applauded Fon, who, according to the Daily Beast, called him a “great influencer.” He said he didn’t know who Fon was until his son Baron introduced him.

In fact, his son Baron said, “Dad, you have to interview someone I’ve never heard of, but my son knew well – he knows everyone,” Trump told service members. “He said, ‘Dad, you had to interview a guy named Theo Fong.’ ”

Who is Theo Fon?

Theo Fong is a stand-up comedian, actor and podcaster from Covington, Louisiana.

He hosts the “Last weekend, Theo von” podcast, featuring A-list guests such as Mark Zuckerberg, Ben Affleck, David Spade and Morgan Warren. He has over 7 million followers on both Tiktok and Instagram.

In a profile released in April, The New York Times described Phon as “one of the crucial conversationalists in the media’s new magazine-friendly mainstream,” writing that it’s difficult to drill a pigeon-hole, both politically and culturally.

What did Trump say on Fon’s podcast?

Prior to the November presidential election, Trump guested on an episode of Fon’s podcast in August 2024, with the two sharing a wide range of conversations. This episode was filmed at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in Bedminster, New Jersey.

The two discussed a range of topics, including his relationship with his family, health care, lobbying, former president Joe Biden and former vice president Kamala Harris.

At one point, Trump told Fon that he never drank alcohol after telling him he had problems with alcohol after the death of his brother Fred Trump Jr. Trump said he admired his brother, who passed away in 1981, calling him “an incredible character.” He added that he has heard that alcohol is “more difficult to get off than drugs.”

“I say there’s no people, no drugs, no alcohol or cigarettes,” Trump said. “I always say that to the kids, I say, ‘No drugs, no alcohol, no smoking’. ”
