Tottenham Hotspur wins their first trophy in 17 years by beating Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final

CNN

Tottenham Hotspur beat Manchester United 1-0 to win the Europa League final in Bilbao, Spain on Wednesday.

The victory secured its first Cup title in 17 years.

As Athletic Bilbao’s Estadio de San Mames appears to have abolished the reputation that the team didn’t finish a big game, the full-time whistle was equally filled with tears of joy from white-clad Tottenham fans.

It’s a big moment as the Spurs won the club’s first trophy since 2008 and the first continental silverware since the 1983-84 season. The North London Club has struggled to shake off its reputation for “almost good enough” over the past decade, celebrating its victory as if it were their first trophy in nearly 20 years.

The first half was sloppy and both teams were unable to control the game or create real goal chances. The Spurs attacked midfielder Brennan Johnson half later.

In the 42nd minute, Tottenham midfielder Pipe Sall whipped a cross on his right foot into the area.

A crude conversion from the Welsman sent Tottenham fans to Euphoria, with the red-wearing fans still sitting in front of half and feeling discouraged.

Spurs' Micky Van de Ven pulled off an epic goal clearance in his victory at United.

At least the highlights of the most athletic match came in the second half. United pushed the equalizer and Mickey Van de Bean flashed a glorious moment.

After a Manchester United free kick failed Tottenham keeper Guglielmo Vialio, United’s Rasmus Hojlund snapped an uncontested header towards an unprotected goal.

Vicario then corrected Alejandro Garnacho with a nifty stretch save, then made an even better stop at Luke Show near the edge to keep him clean sheets and victory.

Champions League fame and money secured

By winning the competition, Tottenham will compete in the Champions League, the continent’s top club competition, despite how frightening the club’s recent domestic performances are.

The pair struggle so deeply in the Premier League that the two English teams experience an annoying, parallel world.

Tottenham placed 17th in the table and lost 21 times this season, but Manchester United came in first place at 16th, winning four league games since this year’s turn.

Tottenham's Brennan Johnson scored the opening goal in the UEFA Europa League Finals vs. Manchester United.

“I’m very happy right now. Honestly, this season hasn’t been good at all, but I swear that none of our players care about it,” Johnson told the TNT Sports 1 broadcast after the match when the Welsh flag was draped onto him.

“This is everything. The club hasn’t won the trophy in 17 years. Honestly, this makes sense. It makes sense. Every fan is abused.

This achievement was particularly sweet for Spurs Manager Ange Postecoglou, who has been widely criticized for his club’s Premier League performance this season. The Australian in his second season at the North London Club predicted the feat last year.

“I don’t usually win things… I always win things in my second year. Nothing has changed,” he said confidently in September after losing to rival Arsenal.

Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou celebrates after winning the Europa League final.

In a previous outage, Postecoglou won the title and Cup in his second season.

“I think people misunderstood that. I wasn’t really bragging about it. It was my declaration and I believed it,” he said after beating United.

“I was still in the Carabao Cup when I said that. I just had this in me, more than anything, I know the shape of our league is terrible.

“I believed it in me, it was my ambition. I wanted to state it. The club is so close that no one could expect from the club to state it, but I was able to say it.

The title represents the historical achievements of his son Hyun Min. After the match, the Spurs pointed out that he was the first club captain from Korea and led his team to a major European trophy.

Liam O’Hanna, a member of KneeCap, has been charged with a terrorist crime

CNN

Members of Irish hip-hop trio Kneecap have been charged with terrorist crimes following an investigation by London’s metropolitan police.

Liam Ohanna, 27, of Belfast, has been charged with allegedly posting a flag “in support of Hezbollah, a banned organisation,” Metropolitan Police in London said Wednesday.

The charges are linked to a flag allegedly displayed by Ohanna at Kentish Town, the O2 Forum, a London music venue, on November 21, 2024.

“An officer of the Met Counterterrorism Command recognized the online video of the event on Tuesday, April 22. An investigation was conducted and led to the Crown Prosecutor’s Office allowing the accusations listed above,” the statement said.

Police added that Ohanna is scheduled to appear in Westminster Magistrate’s court on June 18th.

CNN reached out to KneeCap management for comment.

Knecap was a critic of the voices of Israel’s war in Gaza. Earlier this month, British counterterrorism police said they were investigating the group after a video was revealed that allegedly showed the band seeking to kill British politicians and shout “on Hamas in Hezbollah.”

Kneecap has never previously supported Hamas or Hezbollah, and says the circulating footage online has been “deliberately removed from all contexts” as part of the “smear campaign” following criticism of Israel and the US over the war in Gaza.

Apart from that, the November 2023 video appears to show one member of a group from Northern Ireland, saying, “The only good Tory is a dead Tory. I’ll kill a local MP.” Tory is another conservative word, and MP is an abbreviation for members of parliament. Over the past decade, two British MPs – Joe Cox and David Ames, have been killed.

Kneecap later apologized to Cox and Amess’ family.

Both videos have been widely distributed online in the wake of the band’s Coachella set, where crowds chanted “free Palestine,” criticising Israeli campaigns in Gaza and criticising US support for the war.

Kneecap manager Daniel Lambert recently told Irish broadcaster RTé that the controversy “has nothing to do with Kneecap… about talking to the next younger band… I can’t talk about Palestine.”

CNN’s Issy Ronald, Rosa Rahimi and Niamh Kennedy contributed to this report.

Nuclear weapons leaders explain the tragedy of the workforce after the Doge turmoil

In testimony from the Senate committee, leaders from the National Nuclear Security Agency acknowledged the issue of staffing after the Doge-led cuts.

play

  • During testimony on May 20, the top official of the National Nuclear Security Agency acknowledged the risk and impact of workforce vacancies caused by Elon Musk’s Doge.
  • A USA Today survey published May 18th detailed the potential impact of endemic federal staffing shortages at the NNSA has recently been exacerbated by the Trump administration’s cuts to the federal workforce.

WASHINGTON – The top leader of the US Nuclear Weapons Director Agency acknowledged DOGE-related staffing challenges at a Senate hearing.

Sen. Angus King and I-Maine were asked whether employment freezes, resignation and attrition could lead to “a rather important vacancies.” Hoagland said on May 20 that he heard that his office “changed people around” to “meet important needs.”

Hundreds of government efficiency were fired earlier this year amid a $1.7 trillion nuclear upgrade in a chaotic wave of layoffs. Most were later rehired. Other important staff agreed to quit their jobs under Doge’s “Fork in the Road” resignation offer.

King said the NNSA claims that the staffing shortages do not place the agency’s mission at the short-term risk.

The NNSA struggled with issues with staffing and talent pipeline decades before the new Trump administration, a recent USA Today investigation has been found. Musk then began efforts to reduce the federal workforce, which further destabilized the NNSA workforce, experts said.

The agency is currently facing a near-recruitment freeze, losing more than 130 of its 2,000 federal employees, losing more than 130 in the Doge Deferred resignation program. More than 300 morale-injuring employees were fired in February and revived.

James McConnell, acting assistant deputy administrator for the NNSA, told the senators during the Armed Services Committee’s subcommittee that they could handle losses “in the short term,” but the NNSA “need to make sure our resources are appropriate.”

Experts say USA Today could maintain a shortage of staffing. He said this could cause further delays and cost overruns in the troubling portion of government agencies in the country’s wider $1.7 trillion nuclear weapons modernization efforts. USA Today has recorded billions of dollars of overruns and safety issues at NNSA facilities due to a talent shortage.

In an interview, NNSA defense programme, predecessor to Hoagland’s Senator Marv Adams, said during his tenure, “Our federal (warhead) program office had a hard time keeping up and keeping up due to a lack of staff.”

The agency’s field office is facing similar tensions, according to David Bowman, former manager of the NNSA’s Nevada Field Office. From 2020 until his retirement in the fall of 2024, Bowman oversaw operations on the vast Nevada National Security Site.

The NNSA field office must review and approve many of the work on the labor and safety management plans of large nuclear weapons agents. In an interview, Bowman said such reviews “need to have technical experts who are FRED.”

“If a field office or safety expert becomes a short staff member, the job will be backed up,” he said.

Bowman described the qualified staff at a remote office in northwestern Las Vegas as “a big challenge we had.”

‘We cannot control everything’ – UAE Team Emirates-XRG adapt strategy as Isaac del Toro learns patience at Giro d’Italia

Despite having to manage a finale that was different from what they expected and tried to engineer, UAE Team Emirates-XRG came away from stage 11 of the Giro d’Italia satisfied and still holding the pink jersey – now by a few more seconds – with Isaac del Toro.

UAE Team Emirates-XRG had tried to let the non-threatening break go on the stage to Castelnovo ne’ Monti, and were happy to let the escapees battle for the stage victory. Instead, they were drawn into an aggressive finale after keeping the gap close enough to allow a late effort from Lidl-Trek to bring back the break.

Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets melt more than previously feared

0

Two huge ice sheets around the world are at greater risk from global warming than previously thought, a study published May 20 says.

play

A study published on May 20th shows that the huge ice spread melts surprisingly quickly, raising new concerns about “devastating consequences for humanity.”

This study focuses on two ice blocks currently sitting on land. The ice sheets of Antarctica and Greenland. As temperatures rise, the ice melts and flows into the ocean, causing sea levels to rise.

Although changes in sea level rise are often measured in centimeters or inches, the melting potential of the ice in these sheets can raise sea level by several dozen feet.

The authors warn in a study published in the journal Communications Earth and Environment.

“Recent observations of satellite-based ice sheet mass losses have been a major awakening call for the entire scientific and policy community working on rising sea levels and its effects,” said Jonathan Bamber, a research co-author at the University of Bristol in the UK.

What is an ice sheet?

The ice sheet is a block of glacial ice that exceeds 20,000 square miles. Ice sheets once covered much of the northern hemisphere during the Ice Age. Currently, Earth has only two ice sheets. One spans across most of Greenland, the world’s largest island, and the other across Antarctica, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center.

The Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets contain more than 99% of land ice and more than 68% of the Earth’s freshwater.

Sea level is rising

The loss of ice in Greenland and Antarctic has already affected the seawater, raising sea levels around the world, NSIDC said. If global greenhouse gas emissions continue at current rates, the Earth’s ice sheet is vulnerable to even larger rapid ice losses that could significantly raise ocean levels.

New research shows that the mass of ice lost from these ice sheets has quadrupled since the 1990s, and now it has lost about 370 billion tons of ice per year.

Recovery can take thousands of years

Even when the planet returns to pre-industrial temperatures, it will take hundreds or even thousands of years for the ice sheet to recover. If there is too much ice, some of these ice sheets may not recover until the next ice age, research suggests.

“In other words, the rise in the ice sheet that has melted from the ice sheet will be lost for a very long time, so limiting warming is very important at first,” said Rob DeConte, a research co-author at the University of Massachusetts Amherst University.

How hot is it?

The study suggests that world leaders should aim for one degree of warming) compared to global temperature over a century to avoid significant losses from ice sheets and prevent further acceleration of sea level rise.

It is a noble goal given that the 1.5° C-threshold has long been debated as a difficult yet attainable goal. (The threshold was exceeded last year, so hope is fleeting about that goal).

“There is growing evidence that 1.5 degrees is too high for the ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica,” said Chris Stokes, the lead author of the Department of Geography at Durham University in the UK, in a statement. “We have long known that sea level rise is inevitable for decades over centuries, but the recent observation of ice sheet losses is surprising, even under current climatic conditions.”

The 2026 TOYOTA RAV4 SUV will receive a gazoo lace treatment. What do you know

0

Internal combustion and electricity are at the heart of the RAV4 GR sports.

play

  • Toyota has introduced the Gazoo Racing Trim for its RAV4 Small SUV for the first time.
  • The 2026 TOYOTA RAV4 GR Sport is a plug-in hybrid SUV with ample power and electric drive range.
  • The RAV4 GR Sport combines thrilling driving dynamics with a more aggressive look than the other trims.

The sixth generation Toyota RAV4 was revealed on May 20th. The new RAV4 generation features major redesigns and exciting new performance-oriented GR trims.

The RAV4’s small SUV is stronger than ever, thanks to its powertrain options. The new Gazoo Racing model incorporates design elements from Toyota’s world-renowned motorsport engineering department.

2026 Toyota RAV4 GR Sport is the most powerful RAV4 ever

Like some Toyota models, the next-generation RAV4 is completely separate from the powertrain of internal combustion engines. Currently, all new RAV4 models come with a hybrid or plug-in hybrid powertrain setup. The 2026 TOYOTA RAV4 GR Sport uses an internal combustion engine and an electric motor to drive power to the wheels. It “takes inspiration from motorsports for models, which are expressions of driving fun,” Toyota says.

The 2026 RAV4 GR Sport produces a whopping 320 horsepower. Other GR models tend to be equipped with turbocharged gas engines, making them the only GR model that is also a PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle). The RAV4 GR Sport features an electronically controlled, continuous variable transmission. All-wheel drive comes standard for better traction and capabilities. The SUV also features Toyota Gazoo Racing tuning handling.

Toyota’s upcoming performance-oriented RAV4 model is the most powerful RAV4 ever. The 2025 TOYOTA RAV4 plug-in hybrid produces 302 horsepower, 18 pony, which will shy away from the total power of the 2026 GR Sport. According to Toyota, it is between 0 and 60 mph in just 5.6 seconds.

Toyota’s new performance trim has a 50-mile electric drive range

Thanks to the electric motor and battery, the 2026 TOYOTA RAV4 GR Sport can be moved with just power. It only has a 50-mile estimated electricity range. That battery can be charged (and refilled range) via an electric vehicle charger similar to an EV.

Electric-only operating range makes plug-in hybrids like the RAV4 GR Sport more efficient. The new performance SUV may have several different driving modes, including EV-only modes and sport modes. The 2025 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid has a similar powertrain setup that provides the driver with four different primary driving modes, allowing the driver to use the hybrid and power in a variety of ways.

2026 Toyota RAV4 GR Sport Features

As for the 2026 RAV4 GR Sport, the range of only enough power and electricity is just one corner of the spear. It also features plenty of sports car touches for drivers interested in exterior/interior styling and design.

Features include:

  • Aggressive exterior styling
  • GR Functional Matrix Grill
  • 20 inch wheel summer tires
  • Front/Rear Wing Type Spoilers
  • Red interior stitching, GR logo on front headrest, steering wheel

According to a press release, Toyota has included paddle shifters and aluminum pedals to “give it a sporty appeal.” Between high power, tuned suspension and sophisticated interiors, the GR Sport is just as sporty as the RAV4 gets.

The 2026 Toyota RAV4 is expected to hit dealers later this year.

The US Senate has approved a tip tax credit

0

play

The US Senate was surprisingly unanimously approved on May 20th, a bill that allows workers to receive cash tips to estimate up to $25,000 in income that will be subject to tax.

This fiscal deduction, presented by Republican Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas) and supported by Democrat Sen. Jackie Rosen (Nevada), must pass through the House before it becomes law. However, the Senate decision presents an important step towards one of President Donald Trump’s important campaign promises: the possibility of partial elimination of hint taxes.

This is the amount adjusted annually in response to the measures for those who earn up to $160,000 a year to benefit from this deduction. However, this applies only to tips received in cash, excluding electronically or via card.

Who will explain this deduction?

According to current texts, the tax exemption will be in effect until 2028 and, as with waiters, bartenders and hotel staff, benefits both employees and independent contractors who work in occupations that are received “traditional and normal.” However, if the law is approved by the House, specific details about which occupations qualify will be defined by the Treasury Secretary.

Additionally, workers who earn more than $160,000 a year will be excluded from 2025. This is a measure that seeks to limit the benefits of average and low-income people, but the effectiveness of that limit has not yet been seen.

Limited relief for most people

The idea of eliminating taxes in hints may seem popular among public opinion, but while it has been pointed out by Trump as a critical factor in the 2024 election victory, various studies have shown that the true impact of this measure will be limited. According to the Yale Budget Lab, only 2.5% of the US workforce works in occupations that received tips. And of that group, 37% are so low that they will no longer pay federal taxes on their income. This means you will not benefit directly from the proposed deduction.

A 2024 analysis of the Center for Tax Policy, a progressive research center, estimates that around 2% of all U.S. homes (60% of households with at least one member receiving tips) will see an average tax cut of around $1,800 a year. In contrast, low-income families will rarely see a $200 a year relief.

Joseph Rosenberg, a senior researcher at the Urban Blue Kings Tax Policy Center, said in a previous report with USA Today it was an expensive and essential fiscal tax proposal.

Tax Costs and Results

Congress’ joint tax office estimates that this particular deduction will cost around $400 million over the next four years. But if taxes on tips are completely eliminated, as suggested by the broader plans promoted by Republicans in the House of Representatives, the Federal government could cost $110 million in 10 years, according to the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, the right center focused on financial sustainability.

Tax Foundation analyst Alex Masianu compared the impact to drilling holes in the country’s financial foundations. “If you’re going to drill holes in your collection, you’ve emphasized that it’s the size of a Volkswagen, not the size of an 18-wheel trailer, but even a small portion of the wider financial projects, is a significant sum.

The project, which includes other fiscal cuts for individuals and businesses, could increase the federal deficit by about $4 billion. Furthermore, it can have regressive effects. An analysis of the Wharton budget model’s Penn reveals that families with incomes between $17,000 and $51,000 lose an average of $705 a year due to cuts in social programs such as Medicaid and the Supplementary Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Earn less than $17,000 can lose more than $1,000 a year.

A greater dependence on tips?

Another possible effect of this policy is that both employers and employees in the sector with hints can encourage restructuring wage payments. This can exacerbate the fatigue of tips that many consumers have already reported after the pandemic, and are feeling pressured to leave hints in each transaction.

“While this project has protections that limit the abusive use of this deduction, it certainly creates an incentive to transfer more parts of your income to failed hints,” warned Rosenberg.

What will continue?

For now, the tax PIPS proposal must be discussed in the House of Representatives. There, some Hardline Republicans have already blocked previous versions of their fiscal projects to avoid including deeper cuts in public spending or the complete elimination of clean energy incentives. Trump has urged lawmakers to join behind the proposal, but it is still not clear whether he will achieve enough support to move forward.

Israel “probably “killed Hamas leader Mohamed Singhwar,” Netanyahu says, saying everything in Gaza would be under Israeli control.

0

Jerusalem
CNN

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel “probably” killed Mohamed Singhwar, the elusive and de facto leader of Hamas in Gaza.

“We’ve eliminated tens of thousands of terrorists,” Netanyahu said at a press conference Wednesday evening. “We have eliminated the leaders of the murderers Deif, Hanie, Yahyasinwar and perhaps Mohammad Singhwar.”

Israel targeted Singwar last week on a set of large strikes at Khan Eunice’s European hospital. The attack killed 28 Palestinians and injured more than 50 others, the Palestinian Health Ministry said after the strike.

If Singhwaal’s death is confirmed, it will be the latest in a series of assassins that have dealt a serious blow to the group’s top brass, but have yet to break the grip on power.

Singwar is the brother of former leader Yahya Singwar, who was killed by Israeli forces in southern Gaza in October.

CNN reached out to Hamas for comment.

At his first press conference in months, Netanyahu also vowed that Israel would not stop the newly launched military operation in Gaza.

“Our forces are capturing more and more territory in Gaza,” he said. “At the end of the operation, all areas of the strip are under Israeli security controls.”

Netanyahu said Israel could agree to a temporary ceasefire, including the release of hostages, but said the end of the war would only come with a list of conditions, including the condemnation of Gaza, the overthrow of Hamas, and the implementation of a US plan for voluntary immigration from the enclave of enclaves.

“Anyone who calls us to stop the war before these goals are achieved is calling on us to leave Hamas to power,” he said.

Netanyahu also said there is “full coordination” with the US over Iran as the Trump administration pursues a new nuclear deal with Tehran. He said Iran must acquire nuclear weapons and prevent it from halting uranium enrichment. CNN reported Tuesday that the US intelligence agency suggests Israel is preparing to strike at Iran’s nuclear facility.

“Israel maintains its right to protect itself from a regime that threatens to destroy it,” Netanyahu said.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

Ancient armored fish ridges may have produced teeth in animals, research finds

CNN

The sensitive interior of human teeth may have originated from a seemingly unlikely location. It is the sensory tissue of a fish that swam in the Earth’s oceans 465 million years ago.

Our teeth are covered in hard enamel, but the dentin – the inner layer of the teeth involved in carrying sensory information to the nerves – responds to changes such as intense biting, pain, or extreme cold or sweetness.

When trying to determine the origin of teeth, one of many possibilities that researchers have considered over the years was that teeth may have evolved from the ridges of the armored exoskeletons of ancient fish. However, the true purpose of the structure called Odontodes was unknown.

Now, new research into fossils and 3D scans have provided evidence that external uplifts contain dentin. Scientists reported the findings of the nature magazine on Wednesday.

“It’s covered in these sensitive tissues. Maybe when you hit something, it can feel that pressure. Or when the water gets too cold and you need to swim elsewhere,” Dr. Yara Harudy, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Chicago’s Department of Biobiology and Anatomy, said in an email.

During its analysis, the team also revealed similarities between dental similarities and features known as sensella, which exist as sensory organs present in the shells of modern animals such as crabs and shrimp, and can be found in fossilized invertebrate arthropods. The development of teeth in vertebrate fish and the development of arthropod sencira are representative examples of evolutionary convergence when similar features evolve independently in different animal groups.

“These jawless fish and agraspizid arthropods (extinct marine arthropods) have very distant shared common ancestors and may not have any hard parts at all,” Khalidi said. “We know that vertebrates and arthropods have independently evolved their stiff parts and, surprisingly, similar sensory mechanisms that are integrated into the rigid skeleton.”

While arthropods retain their senses, the dental proteophyte appears to be a direct precursor to the animal’s teeth.

They reached another discovery as researchers compared Sensera to Odontode. One species once thought to be an ancient fish was actually an arthropod.

Khalidi’s original purpose was to solve the mysteries of the oldest vertebrate animals present in the fossil record. She approached museums across the country and asked if she could scan fossil specimens from the 540 million-year-old Cambrian to the 485 million-year-old Cambrian period.

She then settled thoroughly in the Argonne National Laboratory, capturing high-resolution computed tomography (CT) using advanced photon sources.

“It was a night at the particle accelerator. It was fun,” Khalidy said.

Suckermouth Catfish Fish's tooth-like scans of tooth structures show the nerves (green) that allow for the transmission of sensory information from the nervous system to the nervous system.

At first glance, the fossils of anatrepis, known as the anatrepis, looked like vertebrate fish. In fact, a previous study in 1996 identified it as one. Khalidi and her colleagues noticed a series of pores filled with material that look like dentin.

“We were digging each other high. “Oh, my god, I finally did it,” said Haridi. “It would have been the first tooth-like structure of vertebrate tissue from the Cambrian era. So we were pretty excited when we saw the bright signs of what looked like dentin.”

To confirm their findings, the team compared scans of other ancient fossils with scans of modern crabs, snails, beetles, sharks, barnacles, and even catfish from miniature soccer trout that Khalidy had raised himself.

These comparisons showed that Anatrepis is similar to arthropod fossils, including those from the Milwaukee Public Museum. And what the team thought was a tubule lined with dentin was actually similar to Sensila.

However, during their scans they found dentin-containing dentin in ancient fish such as Ellipticus and Astraspis.

The confusion over the true nature of Anatrepis came from the fragmentary nature of the fossil. According to Harudy, the most complete piece is only 3 millimeters (0.1 inch), which has proven to be a comparative study challenge that relies on external imaging.

The CT scan shows the cat shark dentition. These tooth-like structures are connected to the nervous system.

However, the new scans she conducted allow the fossils to be seen in 3D, revealing the internal anatomy.

“This shows that even if the ‘tooth’ is not in the mouth, it’s sensory,” Khalidi said. “So these fish have sensitive armor. These arthropods have sensitive armor. This explains the confusion with these early Cambrian animals.

The cutting edge modern imaging used in the study solves the discussion about Anatrepis, said Dr. Richard Dirden, a postdoctoral researcher at the Naturis Center for Biodiversity in Leiden, Netherlands. Dearden was not involved in the new research.

“The (research author) uses cutting-edge modern imaging approaches to try and solve this question, assemble impressive comparative data, and convince and establish that Anatrepis is not actually a vertebrate,” Dearden said in an email.

Armored jawless fish such as Astraspis and Eriptychius, and ancient arthropods such as Anatolepis coexisted in muddy Ordovician waters that occurred between 485.4 million and 443.8 million years ago.

Other contemporaries of these animals included large cephalopods such as giant squid and huge seabeds. Characteristics such as Odontodes and Sensilla help fish and arthropods distinguish predators and prey.

The artist's illustration depicts Astraspis being attacked by Sea-Scorpion Megalograptus in a dark shallow water. The animal's interacting exoskeleton glow represents how both sensed the world around them.

“When you think about these early animals, when you’re swimming in armor, it needs to sense the world. This is a rather intense, predatory environment, and it would have been very important to be able to sense the water properties around it.” “So here we see that armorless invertebrates, like horseshoe-shaped crabs, also need to sense the world.

Some modern fish have teeth, but sharks, skates and some catfish are covered in small toothlets called dentists, and the skin feels like sandpaper, says Halidy.

Khalidy studied the catfish tissue she raised and noticed that the dentist was connected to the nerves just as the teeth were in animals. When comparing teeth, teeth and sencira, they were all incredibly similar, she said.

“We think that the earliest vertebrates, these big armored fish, had very similar structures, at least morphologically. They all create this mineralized layer that covers soft tissue and helps to sense the environment, so they look the same in ancient and modern arthropods,” Khalidi said.

According to the study authors, the genes needed to form teeth may have later produced animals-sensitive teeth, including humans.

The findings supported the idea that sensory structures first appeared in exo skeletons, providing genetic information that can be used to create teeth as they become a necessary part of life, the study authors noted.

“As time passed, fish have evolved their jaws and have an advantage in having pointy structures around and in their mouths,” Khalidi said. “A little by little, the fish with jaws has pointy keratinous keratin at the end of its mouth, which ultimately existed directly in the mouth and was lost throughout the body. The relationship between teeth and teeth is continuously revealed by new fossils and modern genetics.”

A CT scan of the front of the skate shows stiff teeth-like dentitions (indicated in orange).

The new research is improving the timeline of the first appearance of hard tissue and the early ancestors of jawed fish by removing anatrepis from fish tree trees, said Dr. Lauren Saran, assistant professor at the Macro Evolution Unit at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology in Japan. Saran, who was not involved in the new study, also raised an interesting new hypothesis that precursors like the tooth scaleri evolved to detect prey, friends, or water predators.

“This is a real challenge to the seemingly obvious assumption that it has evolved (mainly) for hard tissues like dentin and for body protection and throat feeding,” Saran said. “It could have been “up” (and subsequently modified) for these uses instead. It’s just like how limbs evolved before walking on track. It is also interesting to see the extent of convergence between early armored arthropods and fish, and also to raise questions about how much ecological overlap occurred between these two groups. ”

Khalidy wants to continue his search for fossils that could lead to the oldest vertebrates, given that researchers expect to have more early vertebrates than Astraspis and Ellipticus. And despite not discovering it through the study, they made valuable discoveries, Shubin said in an email.

“I was disappointed that (Anatrepis) was not a vertebrate, but I was surprised by the new ideas that arose,” Shubin said. “And that took us in a whole new direction. It’s science.”

Ohio Custom Pen Maker meets Vice President JD Vance’s order

play

The enthusiast became Ren Cultman, a small businessman who manufactures custom pens for businesses, but received an unexpected order this spring.

Kaltman, who started the business Buckeye Pens & Gifts nearly 20 years ago after becoming obsessed with “pen spinning”, sold his products to many vice presidents of companies.

“I thought it was a joke at first,” said a cultman, who lives outside of Cincinnati. “I thought someone was holding me down.”

However, two emails from the Office of the Director of Protocols at the State Department confirmed the order. Officials wanted a pen for Vance’s office to hand out as a gift to senior officials. The order included adding a Vice President’s sticker to a wooden box that fits the pen.

Unique Trees from the Official Trees of Ohio

Cultman credits his exclusive work with the Buckeye Bar, a knotty wood that frequently grows within the state’s official tree roots. Carving can be a little more difficult, but swirling grains produce unique patterns and can include black, blue, brown, gold, and gray. It’s clean and expensive. Cultman sells pens for between $60 and $100.

The Cultman showed Enquirer’s communication, a bill and payment confirmation that showed the federal government had purchased 20 pens from him for $1,936.

State Department officials did not respond to messages seeking comment and did not have Vance’s office.

The cultmen attempt to maintain a tidy workshop in the corner of the town of freedom, which smells like sawdust. The 72-year-old cultman, a semi-retired professional photographer, said his pen-making efforts began as a hobby. But after he made 50, his wife said he should sell them at the craft show. He later added a website.

“I’m addicted,” recalled Cultman. “She asked me: “How much do these cost us and how many pens do we need?”

Trump administrator. Violated court orders by eliminating immigrants to South Sudan

The plane path for a man convicted of a serious crime was stopped on his way to a war-torn African country

play

A federal district judge said the Trump administration violated the court’s orders without giving them the opportunity to oppose the eight immigrants to South Sudan.

The man convicted of a serious crime was placed on a plane on May 20th to a war-torn African country in South Sudan. The plane has landed, Justice Department lawyer Elianis Perez told the court, but where would he not say it, citing security concerns.

South Sudan later agreed to send the man to his home country, according to Federal District Judge Brian Murphy.

Five are convicted murderers, while two have been convicted of sexual offences, the government said. ICE mostly gained custody of the male earlier this month.

Officials have disciplined the court for demanding that the man maintain US custody.

“Local Massachusetts judges are trying to force these unique wild monsters, a clear and current threat to the safety of American and American victims,” Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary for the DHS spokesperson, said during a May 21 court hearing briefing.

Has the administration violated a court order?

One of the men, Diane Peter Domach, is from South Sudan. The rest were from Cuba, Mexico, Laos, Myanmar or Vietnam.

In a ruling in late April, federal judge Brian Murphy banned the government from sending immigrants to third countries, providing clear information about where they are going and giving time to raise concerns about being sent to that country.

Government lawyers said they believe men have opportunities.

“These individuals went through the removal procedure,” Perez said. “They had the opportunity to express their fear.”

The male lawyer said that by the time he received it in emails and deleted documents for his client, the man was already heading for South Sudan.

“It was impossible for these people to have any meaningful opportunities to oppose their move to South Sudan,” Murphy said.

He said the government “unsuspectedly” violated the court’s order. He said this includes giving immigrants the opportunity to express their fear of being sent to a third country or a country that is not their home. However, Murphy declined to decide whether this was promoted to criminal filibuster.

Why were they sent from the country?

The eight men’s home countries initially did not accept them, so U.S. immigration and customs enforcement agencies had to find a “third country,” said Todd Lyons, the agency’s representative director.

Despite the title of deleted documents, emails and briefings as “a migrant flight to South Sudan,” authorities declined the man on his way to the East African country.

The White House and the Department of Homeland Security have posted names and images of several men convicted of sexual assault, attempted murder and first-degree murder.

On May 20, some of the men on the flight said they were informed at the last minute that they would be sent to the East African country. The lawyers alleged that the court requested an emergency hearing to intervene in the removal to South Sudan, and that the flight violated Murphy’s previous order. Previously, the administration tried to take several men away to Libya.

At a May 21 hearing, Justice Department Perez said the government is complying with a court order that the government will keep them in ice custody.

Trump brings a fight to the Supreme Court over Doge’s disclosure

The Trump administration wants to prevent Doge from handing over the records to federal court.

play

WASHINGTON – The Trump administration hopes the Supreme Court will step in in its fight to prevent Doge from becoming subject to the public records law.

In an emergency request filed May 21, the Justice Department asked the court to suspend a judicial order requiring testimony regarding Doge’s production documents and its operations, as a federal court would decide whether government efficiency launched by Elon Musk must comply with the Freedom of Information Act.

The administration argues that Doge is exempt from the country’s highest public disclosure laws as it is an advisory body to the president.

The Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics of Washington, a Watchdog Group, are suing Doge, claiming that they “do not provide meaningful transparency in its operations or assurances that they maintain appropriate records.”

The group hopes to learn more about Doge’s role in Trump’s efforts to dramatically reduce and rebuild the federal government.

“Americans deserve government transparency more than ever,” said Donald Sherman, executive director and chief advisor to the crew.

This is not the first Doge-related request to reach the Supreme Court.

The Trump administration has also asked the judiciary to ensure staff access to data on millions of Americans held by the US Social Security Agency.

In the most recent case, the administration balked the judge’s decision that Doge appears to have sufficiently independent authority to be subject to the Freedom of Information Act.

US District Judge Christopher Cooper also said in his order in March that Doge was “marked by an extraordinary secret.”

When the administration tried to dismiss the crew’s case, Cooper said Doge needed to take over the information.

The Justice Department told the Supreme Court that the decision “turns FOIA towards its head” effectively required disclosure, and that the court said Doge must comply with the law.

That could lead to “opening season for FOIA requests for presidential advisors,” Attorney General John Saurer argued in an emergency appeal.

“The court rejected a similar fishing expedition to the function of the enforcement,” Sauer wrote.

The Supreme Court asked the crew to respond to the administration’s request by noon on May 23rd.

PBS Kids Furlough 25% of staff after federal fund cuts

0

A spokesman for the Ministry of Education said that the number of ready grants has been cut because they “do not follow management priorities.”

play

PBS hit some of its staff a few weeks after the Trump administration began pushing for public broadcasters to refund.

A PBS spokesperson said in a statement to USA Today that 25% of PBS’s child employees were “due to the decision to suddenly cancel what the Department of Education is ready to learn.”

“This decision has removed important resources that have enabled us to create high-quality, educational PBS children’s content for over 30 years, while opening up a potential world to millions of children across the country,” the statement said.

PBS President Paula Karger announced Farrow at his address at the PBS Annual Meeting on May 19th.

“We found a way to continue serving PBS kids and were forced to drive away truly talented members of PBS staff,” says Kerger. “We’re going to continue fighting.”

What are you ready to learn Grant?

On May 2, the Ministry of Education cancelled Ready To Learn Grant, which helps fund educational children’s shows, Public Broadcasting for Public Broadcasting (CPB) said in a May 6 news release.

According to PBS, a federal grant funded by the Department of Education to help develop PBS Kids programming allows you to learn Grant. Historically, he has funded numerous popular shows, including Sesame Street, Clifford the Big Red Dog, and Reading Rainbow.

“Its general goal is to promote early learning and school preparation with a special interest in reaching low-income children, according to the education department’s website.”

The grant was renewed on a five-year basis, with the current cycle approved by the first Trump administration set to expire on September 30th.

The end of the grant has lost $23 million that will lead to children’s games and educational shows, according to the CPB.

Why did the Trump administration cut the prepared grants?

In a previous statement to USA Today, Department of Education spokesman Maddie Biederman said Cutt targeted “racial justice education programming.”

“This is not in line with administrative priorities. The Trump Department of Education will prioritize funding that supports meaningful learning and improvement, rather than divisive ideology or memorized propaganda,” Biederman said.

Sara Dewitt, senior vice president and general manager at PBS Kids, said in a previous statement to USA Today that the station “continue to fight to maintain our vital services.”

Trump bolsters attempts to refund public media

Earlier in May, President Donald Trump signed an executive order pushing the CPB to halt funding for PBS and NPR.

However, the CPB is not a federal agency subject to the President’s order. The company provides operational support for public television and radio stations.

CPB received $535 million in federal funds in 2025, according to the budget.

Target sales drop sharply in the first quarter as customers worry about tariffs | Trump’s tariffs

0

Sales at Target fell more than expected in the first quarter, with retailers warning customers will slip for all of 2025, worrying about tariffs and the economic impact and pulling back spending.

Target also said the boycott of customers also caused some damage in the latest quarter. The company scaled back many diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives in January after being attacked by conservative activists and the White House. Target’s Retreat has seen a reduction in Pride Month’s LGBTQ+-themed products in June 2023, making more customers angry and even more customers angry.

Sales fell 2.8% to $23.85 billion, short of the expected $24.233 billion Wall Street, according to Factset. Sales also fell from the company’s $245 billion reported in the same period last year.

Target cut its annual sales forecast on Wednesday. The company currently expects a 1% increase in sales in March, followed by a 2025 single digit decline.

Equivalent store sales from established stores and online channels fell 3.8%. This includes a 5.7% decline in store sales and a 4.7% increase in online sales. This will increase comparable store sales by 1.5% over the last quarter.

The number of online and physical stores transactions fell by 2.4%, while average tickets fell by 1.4%. Target said Tuesday that it cannot be reliably estimated the individual impact of each factor that has been hurting the business.

Recent results highlight the Target’s ongoing struggle in recent years to revive sales, particularly in fashion and home furniture, as competition becomes more intense with those of Walmart and Amazon. Target’s stock has fallen by more than 37% over the past 52 weeks.

Target’s rival Walmart reported strong quarterly sales last week. The country’s biggest retailer has already raised prices for some items due to tariffs, and said more price increases were ongoing as the return to school shopping season went high gear this summer. For example, a car seat made in China, currently on sale at Walmart for $350, would likely cost customers an additional $100, executives said.

Target did not provide details on the impact of fees on prices, but said it is considering various ways to offset these costs.

“We’re watching the competition,” Cornell told reporters. “We literally adjust weekly so we constantly adjust our pricing. Some are up. Some are reduced.”

Donald Trump’s threatened 145% import tax was reduced to 30% in a transaction announced on May 12th.

However, Americans were already pulling back their spending as they became increasingly uneasy about the state of the US economy. Companies such as toy maker Mattel, tool maker Stanley Black & Decker, and consumer product giant Procter & Gamble have announced plans to raise higher prices or prices due to the trade war kicked by the US.

The man allegedly providing alcohol to a minor Pittsburgh Pirates fan who suffered a major injury after falling 21 feet from the stands during a major league baseball game at PNC Park last month, is currently facing criminal charges.

The dramatic fall, filmed in the video, took place at the bottom of seven innings as 20-year-old Kaban Markwood rolled the railing on the right field as he celebrated Andrew McCutchen’s April 30 Go-Ahead Double.

His friend Ethan H. Kirkwood, 21, was charged May 20 with two counts of alcohol or malt beverage furniture in connection with the case, Allegheny County online criminal case records show.

Both men are from the city of McKeesport, a suburb that is about 25 minutes’ drive southeast of downtown Pittsburgh.

A video circulating on social media after the fall shows Markwood sitting in the front row of his seat. He then rolled down the top rail and fell into the dirt below.

The fall came from one of the tallest seats in the outfield – the highest fence in the outfield was the correct field at 21 feet, in honor of Hall of Fame Roberto Clemente, according to the pirates.

In an interview on May 7 when he was hospitalized after the accident, Markwood told the Pittsburgh Tribune Review that he “broke everything.”

Have the Pirate Fans of Pittsburgh survived?

According to a spokesman for the South Allegheny School District, Markwood graduated from South Allegheny High School in 2022.

“I really can’t sleep,” he told Triblive.com. “I have a lot of back pain.”

According to an online fundraiser created by his girlfriend’s mom, Jennifer Phillip, she writes that Markwood broke his neck, cravicle and back.

“But he shows true strength and we continue to maintain hope for a smooth recovery,” Philip wrote on May 6th on his fundraising page.

As of May 21st, the page had raised more than $67,000 to support Markwood.

The Pittsburgh Public Safety Bureau previously reported that autumn was “treated as a coincidence.”

Friends charged for giving beer to fans who fell into court in June

Kirkwood was not listed online as an inmate at the Allegheny County Jail on May 21.

It was not immediately known if he had obtained a lawyer.

Kirkwood is scheduled to appear before a district court magistrate for a preliminary hearing on the June 23 charge.

Kennedy said his “team” is in Milwaukee and he will help contaminate lead. The city says it’s not true

0

US Health and Human Services Director Robert F. Kennedy Jr. told the Senate subcommittee Tuesday that he has a “Milwaukee team” to help the federal government deal with the school’s leading crisis. The city says it is not true and does not receive the assistance requested by the US Center for Childhood Lead Poisoning Specialists in Disease Control and Prevention to address ongoing pollution.

At a hearing of the Senate Budget Subcommittee to consider the President’s HHS budget request in 2026, Kennedy submitted questions that have already been cut by the federal health agency about the program and staff.

CNN reported in April that the CDC had rejected requests for assistance with lead exposure in aging buildings at Milwaukee Public Schools after the agency’s lead experts were cleaned up in extensive cuts in U.S. healthcare facilities. Kennedy and HHS say the government is planning to continue its work in preventing and surveillance of lead poisoning in the new American administration, not the CDC.

CDC experts have not been rehired.

“Nothing has been re-employed from our lead program or department,” Dr. Eric Svenden, director of the Department of Environmental Health Sciences and Practice, told CNN on Tuesday.

“We continue to fund the program, and we have a team in Milwaukee who is involved in the analysis of Milwaukee and our analysis of Milwaukee, and we’re involved in the analysis of Milwaukee and Milweekee,” Kennedy responded to a question from Sen. Jack Reed of D-Rhode Island’s Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program.

Caroline Reinwald, a spokesman for the Milwaukee City Health Department, said Kennedy’s statement was “inaccurate.”

“The Milwaukee City Health Department has not received federal epidemiological or analytical support related to the MPS lead hazard crisis. Our formal EPI assistance request has been denied by the CDC,” she wrote in an email from CNN.

Reinwald said the department was recently supported by a lab technician at CDC’s Laboratory Leadership Services who was there from May 5 to May 16th.

“This support was requested independently of the MPS crisis and was part of another existing need to expand the lab’s long-term capabilities for lead testing,” Reinwald said. Beyond school pollution, the city has an ongoing program to test and repair leads in aged homes.

Earlier this month, CNN’s Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta asked city health committee member Dr. Michael Traitis if the agency has enough resources to accomplish what it needs to be.

“We have enough teams now,” Totoraitis said. “I think the long-term research into potential chronic exposures of students in the district is part of what we were really looking for in the CDC to help us. Unfortunately, HHS fired the entire team due to blood exposure as a child.

“These are the best and brightest minds in these areas around lead poisoning, and are no longer here.”

Andrew Nixon, communications director for HHS, says the CDC is supporting the Milwaukee Health Organization lab.

In response to the health department’s request, he said in a statement Tuesday: “The CDC is helping to validate new lab instrumentation used for environmental lead testing. (Milwaukee Lab) staff will focus on lead responses and other regular testing, while the CDC will support test verification, laboratory quality control, and regulatory requirements documentation installed in new laboratory equipment.”

The city says that the CDC Lab technicians have left and are not expected to return. At this time, no further support from the CDC is expected.

“MHD is proud of the team currently serving Milwaukee families, managing the usual caseloads while also dealing with major crisis at MPS schools. We welcomed federal support, but without that we will continue to move forward,” Reinwald said in a statement.

At the end of Tuesday’s hearing, Wisconsin Sen. Tammy Baldwin, a Democrat, issued a statement to “correct the record.”

“There are no staff members on the ground deployed in Milwaukee to deal with the lead exposure of children at school. There are no staff left in the CDC office because they were all fired,” Baldwin said. I told Kennedy. “I look forward to working with you to reestablish it. It sounds like you have a commitment to it, but you need staff to make it work.”

Bedner Growers recalls cucumbers bound by the outbreak of salmonella

0

play

Twenty-six people have been ill due to an outbreak of cucumber-related salmonella sold nationwide, of which nine have been hospitalized. There are currently several cucumbers being recalled.

Cultivated by Florida-based Bedner Growers and distributed through the sale of fresh start produce, the cucumbers are linked to the Centers for Salmonella Outbreak, Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

As part of a follow-up test in April 2025, FDA investigators collected environmental samples from Bedner growers who tested positive for salmonella and matched recent clinical samples from people with illness.

No deaths have been reported so far, according to the FDA.

Here’s what you need to know about recalls and outbreaks:

Which cucumbers will be recalled?

Bednar Growers voluntarily recalls the cucumbers sold at Bednar’s Farm Fresh Market between April 29th and May 14th, 2025. The cucumbers were sold directly to consumers at three Bedner’s Farm Farms Markets Locations in Florida (Boynton Beach, Delray Beach and West Palm Palm Beach).

According to the FDA, cucumbers may have been sold “individually or in small packages” with or without a label that does not have a vest on the same brand, product name, or the best date.

The vegetables were also sold this spring to retailers, distribution centers, wholesalers and food service distributors. The agency did not specifically identify where the cucumbers were sold. According to the FDA, the products were labelled either “super,” “select,” or “plain,” for distributors, restaurants and retailers who purchased the cucumber.

“Don’t sell or offer the entire cucumber grown by Bedner Growers Inc. and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Inc. between April 29, 2025 and May 19, 2025,” the FDA wrote.

What if you think you might have remembered cucumbers

According to the FDA, if you have a cucumber in your home and you don’t know where it came from, throw it away. When eating out next week, consumers should ask whether the cucumbers came from Bednaal producers or from a fresh start production and sales company.

Additionally, the FDA recommends using hot soapy water or dishwasher to clean surfaces and items that may have touched the cucumber.

Companies should not sell or provide services to cucumbers grown by Bednar growers and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Inc. between April 29th and May 19th, 2025.

The FDA also recommends that businesses clean and disinfect items and surfaces that may have come into contact with the cucumber, and stores must notify customers who may have used their store or email signs to purchase the cucumber.

What states are affected by the salmonella outbreak? See the map

As of May 20, cucumber-related salmonella outbreaks have made 26 people sick in the next 15 states.

Symptoms of Salmonella infection

According to the FDA, the disease usually occurs within 12 to 72 hours of eating food contaminated with salmonella, and symptoms usually last for 4 to 7 days.

Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps.

According to the FDA, five people, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are more likely to have a severe infection.

Colombian students suspend graduation with a chant of “Free Mahmoud”

  • Immigration agents arrested Halil, a green cardholder who married an American citizen on March 8th in the lobby of a student apartment in Manhattan.
  • The Department of Homeland Security is attempting to deport Halil, claiming that his pro-Palestinian activism threatens the interests of US foreign policy.
  • He will remain in a Louisiana detention facility and will appear in immigration court on May 22nd.

Claire Shipman’s acting president at Columbia University faced loudly booing and a “free mahmoud” chant at the opening ceremony on May 20th, and stopped her speech as students continued to detain their peers and expressed anger.

Filmed in a post shared across social media, the scene interrupts Shipman’s speech as students from undergraduate liberal arts Columbia College called for student activist Mahmoud Khalil to be released. Others can be heard screaming, “You’ve arrested us,” hinting that the university is calling on police to disband student protests.

Immigration agents arrested Halil, a green cardholder who married an American citizen on March 8th in the lobby of a student apartment in Manhattan. The Department of Homeland Security is attempting to deport Halil, claiming that his pro-Palestinian activism threatens the interests of US foreign policy.

He will remain in a Louisiana detention facility and will appear in immigration court on May 22nd.

“Illegal” arrest video

Assistant Chief Immigration Jamie Comans ruled on April 11 that the Trump administration could move forward with efforts to deport Halil.

Khalil’s lawyers said they submitted a new request to the judge that they would withdraw the U.S. government case, citing new video evidence showing his arrest was illegal.

Halil’s lawyers said the US immigration customs enforcement agent initially had a warrant on the arrest report. Government lawyers later admitted in court filings that they had no warrants, but argued that they were not needed due to the “extigent tension situation.” They wrote that Halil was a “flight risk” and “it’s likely that he will escape before he gets a warrant.”

Surveillance footage and previously released videos contradict each other, the Halil legal team said. The video shows Halil quietly speaking with the agent and not trying to work together to leave.

“The footage released today of Mahmoud Khalil’s arrest was not clear. The Trump administration’s claim that Khalil resisted the arrest is false,” said Amorsinha, executive director of the ACLU in New Jersey. “His illegal arrest is the result of deliberate federal targeting in retaliation for his defense of Palestinian rights.”

This video was obtained through a subpoena sent to Columbia University. It supports previous statements and video footage shot by Khalil’s wife Noor Abdallah.

Halil is also filing a federal lawsuit before US District Court for the District of New Jersey, claiming that his detention violates his constitutional rights of constitutional speech and legitimate processes. The lawsuit was filed in New Jersey as Halil was detained there prior to his transfer to the Louisiana immigration detention center.

US lawsuit against Mahmoud Khalil

Khalil, a Palestinian born and raised in Syria, has not been charged with crimes. Secretary of State Marco Rubio claimed in a letter to the court that he presented it as evidence. He argued that their beliefs, statements, or associations have the authority to expel non-citizens who pose the interests of foreign policy, even if they are “otherwise legal.”

Rubio also claimed that Halil had participated in “anti-Semitic protests and destructive activities” that “undermine the US efforts to combat anti-Semiticism.”

Khalil was a student negotiator and spokesman for protesters in Colombia in the spring of 2024. He and his lawyers are challenging the anti-Semitism allegations. They argue that the Trump administration is trying to silence criticism of Israel and misconstruing pro-Palestinian activity with anti-Semitism. Colombian Jewish students have written to the court saying that Khalil supported and defended them.

Lack of graduation

The Halil incident was the first of several well-known cases in which pro-Palestinian student activists were detained by immigration authorities and targeted deportation.

A federal judge released several students on bail, including Mohsen Mahdawi, a Colombian activist who was detained by ICE in a citizenship interview in April. Mahdawi graduated on May 19, wore a kefier and received a standing ovation as he flashed the peace symbol to the crowd.

Halil, who missed the birth of his first child last month, will also miss the opening ceremony in Columbia on May 21st. He received his master’s degree from the International Public Service School in December.

On May 18, his wife, Abdallah, hugged her son Dean and accepted a diploma on his behalf at an alternative “Graduation of People” ceremony. The ceremony was held by the People’s University of Palestinian, a coalition of student organizations defending Palestinian rights.

Abdallah read a message from Khalil. “Thank you for taking me in my heart today. It’s been two months since I was taken by my family and you, and I’ve been detained to tell you the truth about Palestine,” she reads from the statement.

“Columbia University, the place where we sought knowledge, justice and truth, chose silence instead of solidarity. It made me fail, but you didn’t show up.

“I am endlessly proud to be within you. I carry your love with me every day,” read Abdallah. “Continue carrying mine.”
