The United States on Wednesday rejected a resolution by the UN Security Council to call for an “immediate, unconditional, permanent and permanent” ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, a Gaza militant group.

The United States was the only country opposed the resolution. Fourteen others, including the UK, voted in favor. There was no absenteeism.

US UN ambassador Dorothy Kamille Sia said the US opposed the resolution as Hamas did not ask to disarm and leave Gaza.

“(Resolution) is unacceptable for what it says, unacceptable for what it says, and unacceptable for how it has progressed,” she said in a comment before the vote was made.

The United States has taken a very clear position since the beginning of this conflict that Israel has the right to protect itself, which assures us that we will never again be in a position that will defeat Hamas and threaten Israel. This is not the first time the US has rejected a UN Security Council resolution on Gaza. In November 2024, it rejected anyone seeking an immediate, unconditional, permanent ceasefire because it failed to secure the release of hostages.

The UK said it “remorried” that the latest resolution “didn’t reach a consensus.”

“The UK voted in favor of this resolution today due to the unbearable circumstances of Gaza,” said the UK’s permanent representative in New York’s United Nations after the vote.

“We are determined to see the end of this war and to ensure the release of the hostages Hamas holds and alleviate the devastating humanitarian situation for the Palestinians in Gaza,” she added.

Woodward described Israel’s expansion of military operations in Gaza and strict restrictions on aid as “unfair, disproportionate and counterproductive.”

In mid-May, Israel said it aims to destroy Hamas, release hostages, raise denunciations from the United Nations and aid bodies warning civilians to bear the brunt of the expanded attack.

The ambassador also denounced Hamas for its attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, demanding extremist groups to “release all hostages immediately and unconditionally” and said “Hamas has no role in Gaza’s future governance.”

The ambassador also revised the UK’s position that “the two-state solution is the only way to provide long-term peace, stability and security that both Israelis and Palestinians deserve.”

Meanwhile, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar thanked President Donald Trump and the US administration for “taking shoulders with Israel and for rejecting this unilateral resolution at the UN Security Council.”

“The proposed resolution simply strengthens Hamas and undermines America’s efforts to achieve hostage trade,” he added in X’s post shortly after the vote.

The draft text called for “an immediate, unconditional, permanent ceasefire in Gaza, respected by all parties,” and “an immediate and unconditional lifting of all restrictions on humanitarian assistance to Gaza and its safe and unhindered distribution.” They also called for “immediate and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas and other groups.”

Israel launched a war in Gaza after Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups launched a surprising attack on Southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking 251 hostages. It was the deadliest terrorist attack in Israel’s history.

Gaza’s Palestinian Health Ministry said the number of people killed in the Israeli attacks in the wake of the October 7 attacks has exceeded 54,000.

Argentine President Javier Mairay’s Bureau has denied a series of reports claiming it had approved a new plan that would allow oversight for journalists, politicians and economists.

The ju judge in El Salvador sentenced three retired high-ranking officers to 15 years in prison in 1982 for the murder of four Dutch journalists.

The three were charged with the murders of journalists Koos Joster, Jan Kuiper Joop, Johannes Jan Wilemsen and Hans Ter Laag on Tuesday.

Eleven years later, the United Nations Truth Committee discovered that the ambush “deliberately planned to surprise and kill journalists.”

The trial has been closed and details regarding the defendant’s plea and debate have not been made public.

The Civil War in El Salvador was extended from 1980 to 1992, raising left-wing guerrillas in US-backed Salvadoran forces, killing 75,000 people and an additional 8,000 people missing.

Former Defence Minister Jose Guillermo Garcia was declared along with two colonels, a ju-secret from the town of northern Charatenango and two colonels: former chief of finance police Francisco Moran and former commander of the infantry brigade, Mario Reyes.

All three, ages 91, 93 and 85, were sentenced in absentia. Garcia and Moran are in a hospital in custody, and Reyes currently resides in the United States, while El Salvador is seeking his return.

The UN is calling for an independent investigation after discovering dozens of bodies and evidence of human rights abuses in a militia-run detention facility in Libya’s capital, Tripoli.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said on Wednesday he was “shocked” by the revelation of significant human rights abuses revealed on a site run by the Libyan militia SSA. He called for the site to be “sealed” quickly and Libyan authorities to carry out a “quick, independent, fair and transparent investigation.”

Formed in 2021, the SSA (Stabilization Support Device) is a militia umbrella group that is prominent in western Libya and is facing previous allegations that they committed abuse and human rights abuse in the violence that has taken Libya since the collapse of Moremargadafi.

“The findings confirm the findings of years of investigations from the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and the previous UN Independent fact-discovery mission, and relating to the existence of such places and the extent of violations committed in connection with them, including torture and the loss of death that was carried out,” Türk said.

Reports received by his office between May 18th and May 21st detail the excavations of 10 “charging agencies” at the SSA headquarters in Absalim district of Tripoli. Another 67 bodies were found in the refrigerators of the capital Absalim and Alkadra Hospital, with some bodies said to be in high decomposition due to power outages.

It is also reported that a burial site was found at Tripoli Zoo, which is under SSA control. The identity of the victim remains unknown. Alongside the bodies, “a measure of suspected torture and abuse, and potential evidence of extrajudicial killings” was revealed. “Our worst fears have been confirmed,” Türk said.

Türk emphasized the important need to maintain the evidence. “These sites must seal all potential evidence stored to support immediate accountability efforts. Those responsible for these heinous conduct must be brought to trial without delay in accordance with international standards.”

He expressed concern that Libyan forensic authorities being tasked with excavating and identifying has not yet been granted access to the site, prompting full and unhindered access. Türk also called on Libya to grant UN access to the United Nations to document violations as part of its mission.

The High Commissioner condemned the distribution of “terrifying images and video footage” on social media sites, claiming that “we must respect the dignity and privacy of the victims and the rights of their families.”

The harsh discoveries follow the killing of SSA leader Abdulgani Kikuri in May and the subsequent clash between national security forces and armed groups. These clashes sparked protests calling for an end to the violence in Tripoli. This reportedly led to Turk’s death and damage to property, including the hospital, as well as civilians and police officers.

This raises “serious concerns about assuring the fundamental rights of freedom of expression and assembly and the need to protect citizen spaces.”

Libya has been caught up in a political crisis since the overthrow of long-time dictator Gaddafi in 2011, causing a surge in armed groups across the country.

The October 2020 ceasefire agreement provided temporary relief, but Libya remains divided from various rival armed groups seeking to control the capital.

At least 11 people have been killed and more than 30 have been injured after crowds were crushed outside a cricket stadium in Karnataka, South India, authorities said.

The crash happened when tens of thousands of cricket fans gathered outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru city to celebrate the winner of the Indian Premier League, the world’s most popular T20 cricket tournament.

Karnataka Prime Minister Siddharamaia said the crowds had tried to take part in the celebration by destroying one of the stadium’s gates.

Eleven people have been killed and 33 others have been injured, adding that Siddharamaiah has only used one name, most of the injured are stable and are being treated at the hospital.

“At the time of the celebration, this unfortunate event should not happen. We are saddened by this,” he told reporters. “No one expected this crowd.”

Cricket fans came out on Tuesday to celebrate Bengaluru’s first Indian Premier League title victory. The team gave fans a free pass for the event through the website, urging them to follow guidelines set by police and authorities.

The statement’s team said it was “deeply suffering.”

Local TV news channels saw some people reach the ground, taking paramedics to the ambulances, and celebrations continued in the stadium.

Karnataka’s deputy prime minister, Dk Shivakumar, told reporters, “The crowd is very out of control.”

The Indian Cricket Committee, which organizes the IPL, issues a statement in a statement called “Unhappiness.”
