Immigrants with aggressive immigration cases have been wiped out by Trump crackdown

0

Advocates describe the court’s arrest as “Catch-22.” Immigrants must come to court, but they will be arrested when they do so.

play

New York – They were free to leave the windowless courtroom. But the only way was to go through a corridor lined with masked immigration agents.

Several men cried before they left. The woman made the sign of the cross.

Federal officials arrested a handful of them before they reached the far end of the hall. Detainees were forced to leave the press and small group of New York State Assemblymen and into the fire exit.

This was the scene earlier this month outside a 12-floor courtroom in a Manhattan federal building. But immigration lawyers say similar events are being rolled out across the country to detain immigrants who federal agents believe they have followed all rules.

To make the campaign process happen, President Donald Trump overturned the asylum process set up by his predecessor, determining that tens of thousands of people who followed the Biden administration process were illegal in the United States.

“Most aliens that have illegally entered the US within the last two years are subject to rapid removal,” Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary for the Department of Homeland Security’s spokesperson, said in a statement. “Currently, ICE is in line with the law to promote the rapid removal of these illegal aliens.

In late May, the DHS began asking the court to dismiss these recent cases against immigrants, and arrested them on their way out of court. These days, even immigrants with active asylum capabilities and no criminal history have been detained.

“It seems like they’re going to take everyone,” said Alexa Aviles, a Brooklyn-born New York City councillor who chairs the city’s immigration committee, after the July 3 hearing. “It feels like a complete escalation, it’s very violent.”

The Trump administration reverses policies and strips its legal status

If immigrants can prove they are at risk if they return to their country, they will continue to carry on immigration lawsuits, McLaughlin said. But, as determined by immigration court judges, if their so-called credible fear claims are not valid, they will be deported quickly, she said.

The American Immigration Bar Association, representing around 17,000 lawyers across the country, confirmed that more clients were seen in custody when they showed up for daily court hearings.

“These are people who are showing up in their court proceedings, as the US government asked them. That’s exactly what we want to do,” said Vanessa dojaquez Torres, the association’s practice and policy advisor.

Most people in detention have no history of criminal courts or immigration courts, she added.

“They simply want a fair opportunity to demand what they demand, whether it’s exile or another form of relief,” Dojaquez Torres said. “They just want an opportunity to do that in court.”

Whether or not to appear in court: “Catch-22”

Even when immigrants are in detention, cases of asylum can progress, Dojaquez Torres said, but the removal process moves much faster and it is difficult to access lawyers while in custody.

Dojaquez Torres said that so many people have not appeared on court dates. They are then subject to even more certain arrests and deportation.

“It’s sort of a catch 22,” says Nikolai Mishler, the Jewish organiser for Racial and Economic Justice, a New York City-based nonprofit organization, who has observers seeing the court case and accompany immigrants with hearings.

“It’s completely understandable that it scares people to go to court,” he said, but that puts them even greater risk.

His group encourages people to opt for virtual hearings if possible, although not all judges will allow this. He said on July 11 that agents had detained people even before they entered court.

People never leave the court building

The hearing in early July was scheduled to explain the law to a group of immigrants considering applying for asylum. The judge set a date for immigrants to return and directed them on the basic process towards asylum claims. Nothing appeared to be represented by a lawyer.

When the court deferred, immigrants were first forced to walk through the tunnels of armed agents. Their tactical vests included Border Patrol, Homeland Security and the Treasury insignia.

USA Today has observed agents looking at the paper to identify some people, but reporters also see agents using facial recognition technology to identify people.

State Sen. Grace Lee, a Democrat with the lower Manhattan area adjacent to the building, said it’s hard to imagine the fear people have to come and go to court. “You can read it with their eyes,” she said in the windowless hallway, where the agent stood up and stepped in.

Among the filmed items was a Venezuelan man who lives in Queens. Right behind him, his brother was allowed to walk freely. But the brother, who lives in Tennessee, told USA Today that his belongings were in the man’s apartment. He was trying to ask the guards to get the keys to his apartment, but to no avail.

Another man wearing a traditional white robe cried out in the waiting room. Reporters later saw federal agents escort him.

Outside, small court groups gathered together on the sidewalk and sob. Others took the pace and waited in vain for those who were not allowed to leave the building.

Trump and Newsom are intertwined over California highway trains

0

play

California’s long-standing high-speed rail project has become the latest casualty of an ongoing battle between President Donald Trump and Gov. Gavin Newsom.

The state-backed high-speed rail project aims to connect San Francisco and Los Angeles with 200 mph trains, and will ultimately run 800 miles around California. However, federal Transport Secretary Sean Duffy said the project’s price tag has swelled from $33 billion to $135 billion over the years.

In a social media post on July 16th, Trump called the project a “boondoggle,” which he never launched in the first place. The pending federal contribution is $4 billion.

“The railroad we were promised to have yet to exist, and never exists,” Trump said. “The project was severely expensive, overly regulated and never delivered.”

Duffy added his own social media critique of the price: “We were able to offer around 200 free flights to all LA & SF residents. So today we are pulling a plug of federal funds for this train.”

Trump has long been hostile to the project, and in his first presidency he similarly halted its federal funds. California moved forward regardless, and President Joe Biden recovered money when he took office. Biden has long been the champion of better passenger rail services.

California has been planning the project for decades, and in 2008 voters approved initial funding for the service. New U.S. railway projects usually take decades to get the path needed for managers to plot the route first, lay bridge-to-station trucks, and design and build other necessary infrastructure.

Approximately 119 miles of the railway project are currently being constructed primarily through the low-populated Central Valley region. Railroad boosters hope that the California line will eventually link to the under-constructed Brightline West Express train from suburbs of Los Angeles to Las Vegas.

The project has already spent more than $13 billion in planning, design and initial construction, according to a 2025 update, and is considering public-private partnerships to close the funding gap with additional costs or federal budget cuts.

Newsom, a Democrat who is increasingly intertwined with Trump on the issue of immigration and wildfires, said the state will fight a reversal of funding.. In response to Duffy’s post, Newsom mentioned the recent crash crash on commercial air travel.

Officials with the California High Speed Railroad Bureau claim the project follows all federal funding rules, including a 2024 review by the Biden-era Federal Railroad Administration.

“In the last eight months there has been no change in the meaning of justifying the dramatic face of the FRA,” CEO Ian Choudri said in a June 12 letter to federal officials. “Instead, the FRA simply came to another conclusion after seeing essentially the same facts it took into account in the fall of 2024.”

Is Rihanna’s new “Smurf” okay for kids? A guide for parents

0

play

Don’t stop smurfin music.

The little blue people, who first appeared in Belgian manga artist Peyo’s 1950s manga and became a staple of pop culture in the 1980s, returned to the big screen with the hybrid anime/live action adventure “Smurfs” (July 18). Smurf movies have been around for a while, but the new ones are very musical films. And so is the case with Rihanna.

The pop star is calling out Smurfett. Smurfett looks like a small but cheeky version of actual Rihanna, but makes this world her own as a producer and songwriter. She wrote and recorded the single “My Friend” of “My Friend”, one of 14 original songs on the highly Smurphin “Smurphus” soundtrack.

So, it has a good beat, but are your kids going to dance to it? This is what parents need to know about the new “Smurfs.”

What is Rihanna’s “Smurf” movie?

Everything is pretty Smurphy in Smurf Village – dance parties, etc. – no name, but no voice of James Corden). For example, “Alex Winter) is not worried that he doesn’t have the same “thing” as brave and intelligent (xolomaridueña). However, that existential crisis is exacerbated by Papa Smurf (John Goodman) having Smurfs by evil Razamel (JP Kariak). The Wizard is hot to find the magical missing book in which Elder Smurfs and Smurfett and Company ventures are protected in the outbacks of Paris, Munich and Australia.

Who else is in the “Smurf” cast?

Smurfett has been the only woman in Smurfe Village for a long time, but two actresses have voiced her companions. Maya Erskin is a vanity smurf and Billy Ruhrud is a worry smurf. Sandra Oh is Ken’s daughter and Moxie Smurf, leader of the French Free Fighting Force, and Kurt Russell is Ken, Ron, Dad’s long lost brother, in the form of a Smurf. Those not on the Blue crew are Octavia Spencer, Nick Kroll and Hannah Wadingham play Wizard Buddy, while Natasha Lyon is Mama Poot, the patriarch of The Aussie Snooterpoet, who doesn’t look like the real Lyon of the shocked Furball.

What are the 2025 “Smurf” movies being praised?

“Smurfs” are rated PG by the Film Association for “On Action, Language and Rude Humor.” Smurfs embark on intense adventures through various dimensions that are more child thrilling than anxiety-inducing. And there are no salty smurfs so there’s nothing too off in terms of dialogue. You are more likely to find a Smurphy version of the naughty thing – for example, “Shell?!”

How many new “Smurf” movies are there?

The execution time is 89 minutes. From the perspective of children and parents, you can’t make a mistake in a movie within 90 minutes. Praise, everyone.

How many Smurf movies are there?

The new “Smurfs” is the fourth feature film, not counting Belgian’s “The Smurfs and the Magic Flute” in 1975. The live-action/manga “The Smurfs” was released in 2011, and a sequel was followed two years later. My final outing was a reboot of the entire animation “Smurfs: The Lost Village” in 2017.

Are “Smurf” movies suitable for small children?

Honestly, it, along with “Elio” and “Lilo & Stitch,” is one of the best bets for the younger kids in theatres right now. Of course, all children are different, but it’s not too scary or confusing for the little ones. Razamel’s brother, the classic villain Gargamel (J.P. Kariak) and his bad cat Azrael, are doing somewhat good, not trying to eat the Smurfs for lunch. The Smurfs themselves are the most dancy bunch on this side of the “Troll” franchise, and in the end they’ll be fine, even if they look like a specific fate for a beloved character.

There is also a good message to explore the theme of your identity and finding what makes you special. Corden’s character has a ballad about feeling like an outsider among his own Smurf brothers, but in the end he finds his own personality with the help of Smurfed and his friends. Overall, it’s not too smurfin’s tattered. terrible Smurf flick. The sound effect Smurf (Spencer X) is an absolute joy.

Where can I watch the “Smurf” movie?

Director Chris Miller (Boots in Boots) “Smurfs” will be in theaters this weekend, but the family they want to see at home will have to embrace Smurfian horses. Following the path of a similar family film, Sonic The Hedgehog 3, “Smurfs” is likely to arrive on the video-on-demand platform in mid- to late August, and should be streaming on Paramount+ by late September/early October.

Health insurance premiums are expected to rise sharply

0

play

Consumers who purchase health insurance through the Affordable Care Act Marketplace could face double-digit rate hikes next year.

The insurer is planning a median premium increase of 15% on the 2026 plan, the largest increase in ACA insurance price since 2018, according to a Peterson-KFF Health System Tracker analysis issued on July 18th.

It also inescapable that many working-age consumers who have health insurance through their workplaces are covered. More than half of large employers expect to shift most of their insurance costs to employees and their families next year by increasing the deduction, out-of-pocket, or out-of-pocket requirements, according to benefits consultant Mercer.

KFF said the ACA insurance company cited factors such as health care inflation and the expiration of tax credits enacted during former President Joe Biden’s administration.

It remains unclear how President Donald Trump and Congressional Republican Tax Cuts and Expenditure Act will affect ACA health insurance fees next year, experts said.

Matt McGough, policy analyst for KFF’s program on ACA, said Trump’s tax cuts “created a lot of uncertainty.” “The insurance company didn’t know how to handle it.”

Millions of undisabled adults are projected to lose Medicaid coverage due to legal work or volunteer requirements, but the law also affects those who purchase ACA plans.

Trump’s laws and federal regulations end a special sign-up period for those who have achieved less than 150% of federal poverty levels – groups that have acquired registered profits in recent years. Registration perks allow low-income Americans to sign up for coverage all year round, making it easier for families to sign up.

The law also terminates automatic ACA registration renewal for consumers that is required to update income and other information each year.

Trump administration officials say the Biden administration’s registration policy against Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act allowed fraud and abuse.

In a July 17 news release, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services said it had discovered that 2.8 million Americans may be enrolled in Medicaid or Children’s Health Insurance Program plans in multiple states, or that they have simultaneously registered with a Medicaid/CHIP plan and found that the ACA plan is subsidized. The agency said it has launched measures to ensure that multiple taxpayers are not simultaneously enrolled in insurance plans submitted by multiple taxpayers.

In a statement, US Secretary of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., said the Trump administration would “no longer tolerate waste, fraud and abuse at the expense of our most vulnerable citizens.”

Increased health costs, the end of the Covid era tax credits

Increased medical expenses are the biggest factor in increasing health insurance premiums.

Another important factor is Biden’s tax credit during the Covid-19 pandemic era, making the ACA plan cheaper for consumers, driving record registrations and expires at the end of the year. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, which is estimated to be around 5 million people could lose their health insurance after the tax credit expires.

KFF said the expired tax credits will increase ACA consumers’ out-of-pocket premium payments by average 75% or more. Healthier enrollees are more likely to choose to leave insurance plans for groups of sick patients who need more medical care, McGough said.

A review of KFF, 105 ACA insurers in 19 states and Washington, DC, found that they are seeking a 10% to 20% rate hike for coverage next year. Another 28 insurers are seeking a rate hike of more than 28%.

State and federal insurance regulators will need to register for the proposed rate hike before finalizing this fall.

Most working-age Americans have health insurance through their spouse’s employer. These large employers will be happy to hand over the majority of their health insurance costs to workers and their families next year.

Mercer said 51% of large employers could or very likely shift costs to workers through higher deductions or maximum out-of-pocket costs. A year ago, 45% of employers were willing to let workers absorb a higher share of the health bill.

Employer health benefits costs are expected to rise by 6% in 2025 and could rise even faster in 2026. To control these increases in costs, employers are adjusting insurance plan options for workers and their families.

Early in the last decade, employers were reluctant to transfer significant health costs to workers due to the tight labor market. But more companies are willing to do so as health costs are rising faster than inflation, Umland said.

Businesses are also increasingly offering plans to encourage workers to care for them from a narrower network of doctors and hospitals who have negotiated insurance plans and discounts, Umland said.

The 10th victim died from Massachusetts

Fall River, Massachusetts — The 10th victim died after he swept a Massachusetts living facility earlier this week, injuring about 30 people and was injured in a July 17 fire.

Brenda Cropper, 66, was hospitalized in dangerous conditions after a fire broke out at the Gabriel House Assist Living Facility in Fall River, about 50 miles south of Boston on July 13.

The fire occurred shortly after the 9:30pm EAT at a living assistance facility that has around 70 people trapped in. After arriving at the scene, responding firefighters saw the front of the three-storey building engulfed in flames and smoke, with some residents screaming for help.

The first responder was forced to kick the door and pull people out the window. Several people were declared dead at the scene, and about 30 people were taken to a local hospital with the injured, including five Fall River firefighters.

A resident of Gabriel House who was killed in the fire was identified as 64-year-old Louis Albernaz. Ronald Cordga, 61; Margaret Daddy, 69; Robert King, 78; Kim McIn, 71; Richard Locon, 78; Eleanor Willett, 86; Joseph Willankey, 77. The county district attorney’s office has yet to publicly identify the 70-year-old woman who died in the fire.

On the afternoon of July 17, two patients from Gabriel House were undergoing treatment at Charlton Memorial Hospital, while the other two were still hospitalized at St. Anne Hospital in Fall River. Another patient was at the Level One Trauma Center at Rhode Island Hospital.

Fall River Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon said all residents hospitalized at Gabriel House will not be discharged from the hospital until they set up a home in a facility that meets other assisted living or needs.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation

The investigation into the origins and causes of the fire continues by the Massachusetts State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Section, working with the Fall River Fire Department and Police Department, the offices of the state fire service, with state police officers assigned to the County Attorney’s Office.

While the fire doesn’t look suspicious, investigators have not narrowed down the potential factors to a single cause, according to Jake Work, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Fire Department. Bacon said the fire produced heavy smoke and the air conditioning unit blocked the windows made rescue difficult.

At a July 14 press conference, International Association of Firefighters President Edward Kelly pointed out the inadequate staffing of the Fall River Fire Station, pointing to the chronic staffing shortage of the division’s engine companies, saying only two of the 10 companies have staffed at the national standard of four firefighters per company.

In his speech, Fall River Mayor Paul Coogan called for an immediate increase in the department’s budget.

Fall River Fire Chief: “They Make a Movie” About the heroic actions of firefighters

At a press conference on July 16, Bacon praised the actions of local firefighters and first responders. Crying occasionally, Bacon said he was extremely proud of the 35 Fall River Firefighters who first reported the fire, and the 50 people who fought it with the help of police and emergency medical services.

He described rescue by the crew of the Ladder 2 company. He searched the building and carried non-Americans on his own to await emergency medical services through thick black smoke.

“The driver in Ladder 2 did that action six times,” Bacon said, his voice broke. “These actions are heroic.”

According to the extent of the disaster and the circumstances that have fought fire and made rescues so difficult, he said, “There is no doubt that fire is destined to kill more than 50 people.”

“When all these stories come out, they’ll write a book about it. They’ll make a movie about it,” Bacon added. “It’s really incredible.”

From Tokyo to Citifield: Kodaisenga is an important part of international baseball charging

CNN

When Kodai Senga takes the mound at Citifield, he’s not just pitching for the New York Mets. He is part of a wave of rising Japanese talent breathing new life into American entertainment and millions of new eye-catching Japanese talent on both sides of the Pacific Ocean.

In an interview with CNN’s Jim Sciutto, the three-time NPB All-Star shared what was like transitioning from Japanese professional baseball to major league baseball.

A new generation of talent and fans

“Of course, there are differences when playing baseball in a different culture, so I think it’s really important to think about it and study hard so that you can use the good parts of baseball here (US) and that baseball (Japan) (Japan),” he told Sciutto.

When asked what the most difficult adjustments were regarding the game, Senga said, “Undoubtedly, the ball, the ball is very different.”

The 32-year-old pitcher, known for his powerful fastball, holds a 7-3 record and 74 strikeouts in 77 innings this season alone. His performance has contributed to the Mets’ strong pitching lineup and is currently number one in the National League East.

And despite him heading to the list of injured in Thursday’s hamstring injuries, Senga’s fast adaptation, and his 1.39 ERA this season, is just part of a much bigger story.

This season, 12 Japanese players have appeared on the MLB Opening Day roster. It’s the best since 2012. The list includes not only common names like Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, but also fresh faces like Roki Sasaki and Shoda Imanaga.

The number of fanbases is also increasing. MLB viewers have skyrocketed on both sides of the Pacific this season. ESPN has increased by 22%, TBS 16%, and Japan’s NHK also increased by 22%. The March Tokyo Series (squared by the Cubs and Dodgers) coordinated over 25 million viewers to set a new record for MLB games broadcast in Japan.

The “Otani Effect” has been well documented in Los Angeles for the past few years.

Japanese fans often gather at Dodger Stadium to get a chance to see the field, and embark on a Japanese tour, even feeling behind the scenes of the game.

There is even a new wave of tourism that travels directly to Japan itself.

According to the New York Times, the Japan tour, which brings fans from the US to Japan to Japan for NPB games, saw a 27% increase in social media followers and a 31% increase in newsletter subscriptions.

When asked whether this influx of top talent into the US could hurt Japanese leagues, Senga pointed out how positive the change was in fact.

“We should not just stay like us because things are changing, and we should create a system where the next generation can participate even if new players leave,” Senga said.

It’s not just the players – the Mets themselves have a long history with Japan. They played overseas in their first MLB opening day game at Tokyo Dome in 2000. In 1996 they became the first team to play in both Japan and Mexico.

When asked if he wanted to finish his career in the US, the MLB All-Star said, “If I can get a long-term contract, that’s what I want.”

Fans will take photos ahead of a baseball game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs on March 18, 2025 at the MLB Tokyo Series outside Tokyo Dome.

In theory, baseball could be the same game – three strikes and you’re out, but the cultural nuances are enormous. However, Senga points out that this experience is actually more complementary than contradictory.

“When excitement comes here (in the US), fans can say they’re here to cheer loudly and enjoy the game.

MLB’s international players counted at 265 in 18 countries, and the increase in share coming from Japan has made the league poised to raise the level of competition among international players.

But for Senga, that doesn’t affect his play. When asked if there would be pressure on another Japanese player like Otani to rise, Senga said:

And what about living in New York?

“In New York, it’s pretty easy,” Senga says when asked about finding good Japanese food.

Favorite place? “I have a few.”

Children account for half of over 170 people killed in Pakistan’s floods

Islamabad, Pakistan
CNN

The relentless flood claims the lives of more than 170 people in eastern Pakistan, with about half of its children in the latest catastrophe underscoring the country’s vulnerability to the escalating climate crisis.

At least 54 people have come in the past 24 hours, according to the National Disaster Management Agency. This is after heavy rains swept through Punjab’s most populous state, knocking down homes and destroying roads.

The NDMA said at least 85 children have been killed since the flood began on June 26th.

Aid agencies warn that fears are rising in children, particularly vulnerable to the risk of catching drowsing and life-threatening illnesses from waterborne diseases.

Authorities say the military is being deployed to Rawalpindi city to deal with rising flood levels, and the military is being deployed, with the state of emergency declared.

Videos shared by the Punjab Disaster Management Bureau show dramatic rescue as floods submerge the fields and the entire road. For one, it can be seen by first responders who safely carry the child with an inflatable raft.

Heavy rain continues to hit Rawalpindi and the nearby capital, Islamabad, recording more than 100 millimeters on Thursday, according to Pakistan’s Weather Service. He added that more heavy rain is expected on Friday.

Mahal Hamad, a resident of Punjab’s Salgoda district, told CNN that he was “severely affected” by the flood.

Hamad, a daily wage worker who sells vegetables, said the flood had put him financially backwards. The roof of his house was broken and the rain started to seep in, he said.

“I had a huge loss. I was selling vegetables, but everything is submerged in the water. I’m just a person. I work all day, just to win 1,000 rupees (4 dollars).

Seven flood relief camps are set up nationwide to provide food, water, medicine and shelter to those affected by the flood.

On Sunday, June 29th, 2025, drivers run through flooded roads in Lahore, Pakistan caused by heavy monsoon rains.

Pakistan is at the forefront of a human-induced climate crisis. More than 230 million countries are being hit by two powerful weather systems. One runs through heat and drought, the other unleashes the relentless monsoon rain.

“This is more than just ‘bad weather’. It’s a symptom of the accelerated climate crisis,” Pakistan senator and former minister Shelley Lehman said in X.

This year’s permanent heat wave accelerated glacial melts in the northern part of the country, causing flash floods earlier this year.

Fatal floods from heavy rains in months of monsoons often bring headlines in South Asian countries. This year’s downpour has revived memories of the record-breaking flood three years ago.

Pakistan experienced the worst flood in history in 2022, of which a third of the country has sunk from heavy rain, killing more than 1,000 people.

The power of the flood washed away the house, leaving tens of thousands on the road without eating food or drink to drink.

As floods began to recede, a large number of water-related diseases began to infect thousands of people. Most of them are children. Parents desperately tried to seek help as their child contracted dysentery, dengue and malaria.

According to UNICEF, about 4 million children were still there a year after without using safe water.

Analysis: China was a bystander of the war between Iran and Israel. That’s just where it was hoping

0

Hong Kong
CNN

A few weeks after his country was hit by a wave of Israeli strikes and the US bombed three valuable nuclear facilities, Iran’s foreign minister met with a brief question this week at a gathering of Chinese regional diplomats.

Their group, Beijing and Moscow-backed Shanghai cooperative organizations, should have a way to coordinate responses to military attacks and play a “central role” in dealing with such threats, Abbas Aragci said, according to Iran’s national media.

Along with Iran, SCO members China and Russia are important members of what Washington lawmakers called the “axis” of dictatorships or anti-American integrity of Iran, North Korea, China and Russia.

However, the Iranian proposal does not seem to have direct support from the group, which has 10 members, a regional security group that includes close partners from China and Russia, but also includes rivals from India and Pakistan.

And what was included in Araguchi’s message was a public hint of Iran’s disappointment. Last month, when Israel and the US military hit freely with top military and technical targets, powerful friends from Beijing and Moscow appeared to be sitting on the sidelines.

Still, according to Chinese readouts, Araguchi met at a meeting in China’s Tianjin with Chinese Foreign Minister in Tianjin on Wednesday, saying that he “thanks for his valuable support to Iran.”

Earlier this month, at a summit between another China-Russia-supported group in a massive emerging economy, Iran, member states, were merely a statement of “serious concern over deliberate attacks on private infrastructure and peaceful nuclear facilities.”

The declaration “denounced” the strike but did not name it Israel or the United States.

However, China’s public response – explicitly condemning the attack but not playing a clear direct role in peacebuilding – has been widely seen as a sign of the limitations of power in the Middle East despite bids to strengthen the regional economic and diplomat influence.

Instead, Beijing has focused on using conflicts to play another message. That means China doesn’t want to be a global leader using power like the United States.

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchmets Russia's counterpart Sergei Lavrov was at the Shanghai Cooperative Organisation Conference held in Tianjin, China on July 15th.

The propaganda machinery of the Chinese ruling Communist Party has long denounced America’s “hegemony” and its “forced use.”

Trade and technology friction with Washington has required more friends than ever before, so they sell that message more important to Beijing. And it sees President Donald Trump’s “America First” foreign policy as creating an opening there.

Over the past decade, Chinese attacks, which have expanded the scope of contested claims in the South China Sea, Taiwan’s military intimidation, and expanded naval expansion, have recently trained more from the home coast, drilling with more strength than ever before.

Beijing is crying out “hypocrisy,” and in 2022 Chinese leader Xi Jinping announced his own vision for global security architecture.

That vision united Xi and Russian President Vladimir Putin, who share a distrust of NATO and consider it a provocative actor. That’s a key position and a subtext of why Beijing never condemned Russia’s infringement of Ukraine.

Experts say that China’s apparent lack of role in mediating conflict between Israel and Iran, where Beijing has deep historical and economic ties, indicates the limits of its impact in the region.

However, they also say that Beijing has little interest in walking into regional security as a power player.

“In terms of providing mediation, (China) is happy to provide it, but there is little capacity to project military force in the Middle East and even less political will to be openly and directly involved,” said William Figueroa, an expert on Chinese-Iran relations and an assistant professor at Groningen University in the Netherlands.

Unlike the United States, which maintains substantial military assets to support the region’s allies and interests, China’s ground forces are limited to naval bases in the horns of Djibouti, Africa. Certainly, Beijing’s only military alliance is historic with fellow communist North Korea in its neighbourhood.

Beijing also took part in international efforts last winter to avoid protecting major maritime lanes that are under attack by Yemen’s Hooti rebels following the war between Israel and Gaza.

The attacks put China’s commercial interests at stake, despite Houthis saying it would not target Chinese or Russian ships. And when it comes to efforts to seek a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, China is once again on the sidelines despite its position as an international voice calling for a ceasefire and criticizing Israeli war.

Some experts argue that if China has more global military capabilities, it may throw more of its weight outside its own region.

However, in the Israeli-Iran conflict, Beijing’s focus was on “presenting support for international law as a great alternative to what to portray as a militaristic and illegal intervention in the West,” according to Ton Zhao, a senior fellow at Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

“The story has limited traction among the Middle Eastern states, but it works well in the global South, where it helps to hone China’s image and strengthen strategic competition with Washington at a global level,” added Zhao.

Iranian Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh (second from left) will join SCO's counterpart at a meeting in Qingdao, China, the day after the Israeli-Iran ceasefire last month.

Even if Beijing’s response wasn’t surprising to Tehran, going to China and “behave like everything is great” could have been a “bitter pill to swallow” for Araguchi and Iranian defense minister Aziz Nasirzadeh in recent weeks, according to Jonathan Fulton, senior fellow at the Middle East Program at the Atlantic Council.

Beijing and Tehran had no mutual defense treaties, and their relationship was primarily economic treaties. According to Muyu Xu, a senior oil analyst at trade intelligence company Kpler, China took over 90% of Iran’s oil trade imported through intermediaries, bringing Iran’s profits to about $40 billion last year.

Even when it comes to Russia, China’s closest international partner, Beijing is taking a careful step. It will stop the massive supply of military goods due to the Moscow war in Ukraine, instead buying Russian fuel and supply double goods that can strengthen the industrial bases of national defense.

Its support, and more direct military support from Iran and North Korea for the Russian war, has sparked vigilance in the West about new coordination among members to the so-called anti-American “axis.”

However, the latest stress tests for “Axis” appeared to show its weakness. With Israeli and US bombs raining in Iran, Russia and China appeared to be focusing on their own interests and rhetoric. However, Xi and Putin used conflict to emphasize their united front.

However, when it comes to connections with Iran, the actual tests are likely to be:

“This has limitations on what China is trying to do with regard to direct intervention in military conflicts,” said Brian Hart, a fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) think tank. However, “It is too early to count China’s support for Iran.”

The Russian Chinese model of “walking to the line that it doesn’t provide overt military support” could be a dynamic that develops here, Hart said, as Beijing appears to help the Tehran regime take power. The double-use Chinese-made chemicals needed to produce missile fuel were delivered to Iran earlier this year, CNN reports show.

Still, according to Atlantic Council Fulton, Beijing may be more skeptical of Iran as a strong partner in the region, in that it “cannot project forces to defend airspace” against Israel last month.

And the basics remain the same as how the latest events affect coordination with so-called “axis” countries.

Far from being an alliance or bloc of the West, China, Iran, Russia and North Korea, it has “dissatisfaction alignment” with the West, but there are “very different ideas” of how to restructure global rules to address it, Fulton said.

And for Beijing, “What we need in the Middle East is economically motivated. We need a stable region, and Iran really doesn’t support it. Iran creates as many problems as it solves for Beijing.”

Mitsubishi is investing roughly $1 billion in salmon to diversify beyond cars

Japanese trader 8058.T said Thursday that it will expand salmon agriculture by acquiring additional companies in Norway and Canada as Japanese companies continue to grow in the food sector with a focus on protein.

In the face of a volatile fossil fuel market and seeking a stable revenue stream, Mitsubishi and its rivals are diversifying into a food business where demand is set to grow with the growth of the world’s population.

“In recent years, securing food resources has become an important global challenge driven by population growth,” Mitsubishi said in a statement.

The three acquisitions from Norwegian Grieg Seafood ASA were made through Cermaq Group, Mitsubishi salmon farming company with assets in Norway, Canada and Chile. In fiscal year 2027, we will increase the salmon production from approximately 200,000 tons produced by Cermaq annually to approximately 280,000 tons.

The acquisition price is a Norwegian crown of 10.2 billion ($988.33 million), Cermaq said in a separate statement.

Salmon is one of Japan’s most popular sushi items, but the majority of them are imported from other countries, including Norway and Chile. Japan aims to increase its share of locally produced seafood consumed in 2033 from 54% to 94%.

In October, Marubeni 8002.T began selling salmon from a farm run near Mount Fuji by its Norwegian partner, and joined the seafood business, which also has rivals Mitsubishi and Mitsui 8031.T.

Gen Z Men is becoming more conservative. It’s affecting your date

0

play

Kelly Shear’s date appeared 30 minutes late at the bar they were supposed to meet, and from there things got worse.

When he finally arrived, Shia, now 23, was studying international politics at the University of Delaware at the time, says they began talking. She asked him one of her go-to, first-age questions: What is your most controversial take?

“I believe everyone has a controversial take deep within them,” she says. “This guy, he was like, ‘I don’t have it’ at first. And I said, “That’s not true.” And he thought for a moment about it and he was like, “Oh, I think it’s wrong to be gay.” “

Thanks to these cases, Shia, who firmly describes herself as a leftist, draws a hard line when it comes to dating and politics. If someone is on the far right, she is not interested. If someone is moderately or centrally on the right side in John McCain or Mitt Romney’s vein, she says – she may give them a chance.

“Politics is definitely a factor in my date,” says Shea. “Someone matches me or doesn’t match me, but they like my profile and everything else, they say ‘conservative’ and I absolutely say ”. I think that political differences are OK to some extent.

She’s not alone.

In addition to the many pitfalls of online dating, Gen Z needs to navigate the dating situation characterized by a sudden political polarization between men and women. An April poll by NBC News found that the partisan division between men and women aged 18-29 was wider than in other age groups, with 53% of Gen Z women identifying themselves as Democrats. Conversely, 38% of young men surveyed were called Republicans, compared to 20% of young women.

Political gender disparities are yet another romantic hurdle for a generation that is less sex and burns out on dating apps.

“Because of technology, it’s easier to align yourself with your political identity than it was back then. I think you’re leaking you to a particular denomination,” says Shea. “So I think it’s making people into fragments and segments, so it’s hard to find a common foundation when it comes to dating.”

Dates across political parties on post-election app

Defeating the truth with a dating app profile is nothing new, but it’s now widespread in hiding your political affiliation.

How politics is affecting Gen Z’s dating?

Politics has become an increasingly difficult topic in the domain of dating, with many people not wanting to date across the aisle.

Pew’s 2020 survey report says 71% of Democrats probably won’t date anyone who voted for Trump. About half of Republicans – 47% – said they probably wouldn’t date anyone who voted for Biden.

Among Gen Z, political polarization between men and women was seen prominently during the 2024 presidential election. According to NBC News Exit Polling, on Election Day, it was revealed that Gen Z Men voted for Trump, with 47% voting for him and 47% voting for Harris. Trump also won the position as a woman in Generation Z, but the same exit vote showed that 61% of these voters still went to Harris.

The conservative swing among the younger men has also not been lost to daters.

“I’ve seen an uptick in men showing that men are conservative (on dating apps),” says Shea.

This is also true in the liberal dating market, says Kimberly Biz, 28, who hosts the modern femininity podcast, “Rich Little Broke Girls.” Biz, who identifies as the left wing of the centre, says that even in the blue city, many young men hold conservative views without discussing them.

“Many people in New York, Los Angeles, have been holding a more conservative view behind closed doors, wearing these liberal masks socially,” says Biz. “I know that some of my friends who are likely to be conservative will never publicly admit it.”

The men in the right field are also aware of the gap. Win Howard, a former US Marine infantry officer who has won a dual master at Georgetown University, rejoined the dating scene in February after escaping from a long-term relationship. He uses the hinge on a dating app, but he says he rarely uses it. He says he likes to meet women in person.

Still, “I’m aware of dating apps, but I’m probably going to come across the profiles of women with political views,” he says. “And in DC, I definitely feel like I come across liberals often.”

Howard, who builds the centre right label at age 30, says he is open to dating liberal women and believes finding a common foundation is an important part of dating.

“I’m still a huge, huge supporter and I believe in bipartisan and middle-aged meetings. That’s what two party systems should work,” he says. “That’s how I approach dating, because just because someone is on the left, I’m heading to the right.

Should liberals and conservatives date each other?

Relationship experts agree that it is certainly possible for people with opposing political views to have a romance that thrives – as long as they still share their core values and treat each other with respect.

For Bizu, she says it’s important to know someone beyond politics. After all, she says that most people don’t fall properly into the conservative and liberal category. She discovered that accepting this nuance is a good way to find commonality while quickly retaining your value.

“To be honest, when someone has a prejudiced opinion early, it usually comes from either the far right or the far left,” she says. “At that point, it’s not about politics, it’s about this complete nuance and lack of compassion. And for me, I feel that if you’re not curious or open to understanding different perspectives, you’re not interested in building deeper connections.”

It is also important to remember that Gen Z is still young, and many of its members may be able to change their views over time.

For this reason, Bizu encourages fellow Zers to remain open-minded when it comes to dating.

“I’m open to understanding different perspectives,” she says. “Especially Gen Z, we are only the first. We are still building careers and networking. Even though it may have a different political view, we can definitely get something out of this relationship.”

Do you change the ingredients for Coca-Cola? What we know after the Trump post

0

play

Coca-Cola has not yet announced any changes to its recipes, but President Donald Trump said the drink maker has agreed to switch key ingredients in U.S. drinks.

In a Truth Social Post on Wednesday, July 16th, the president said he had spoken with the company about using “real cane sugar” in his flagship soda, adding that the company agreed to do so.

“I want to thank all those who have the authority of Coca-Cola. This will be a very good move by them – you will see. It’s just right!” he wrote.

In US products, soft drink makers now use high fructose corn syrup, as opposed to cane sugar used in other countries like Mexico.

The announcement coincides with Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s efforts to move American food consumption away from certain ingredients such as artificial dyes. Kennedy considers both sugar and high fructose corn syrup unhealthy, but his Make America Healthy, who fights his chronic health issues, claims that the proposed alternative is ultimately healthy.

Here’s what you need to know about the expected recipe changes:

What did Coca-Cola say about the move?

Coca-Cola has yet to check the recipe switch as of Thursday evening, July 17th, but the company teased the announcement.

“We appreciate President Trump’s enthusiasm for the iconic Coca-Cola brand. Details of the new innovative products within the Coca-Cola range will soon be shared,” the company said on July 16th.

The company’s quarterly revenue calls are scheduled for Tuesday, July 22, 2025 from 8:30am ET.

What did the White House say?

The White House has not responded to USA Today’s request for comment after Trump first announced the July 16th Truth Social Recipe Switching.

“I’ve been talking to Coca-Cola about using real cane sugar in American Cola, and they agreed to do so,” Trump wrote. “I would like to thank all of the Coca-Cola authorities, which will be a very good move by them.

Wall Street Reaction: High Fructose Syrup Producer’s Share Price Drops

Archer-Daniels-Midland, the leading producer of high fructose syrup, saw its shares fall nearly 1% on July 17, following Trump’s announcement.

Meanwhile, materials provider Ingredion fell 0.6% in stock after declining 7% ahead of the market’s opening, CNBC reported.

Coca-Cola shares rose nearly 2% on Thursday.

Is cane sugar healthier than corn syrup?

If consumed in excess, like all sugars, both cane and high fructose corn syrup can have negative health effects such as weight gain, diabetes, and heart disease.

While some studies suggest that high fructose corn syrup may be associated with increased fat production and inflammation, the FDA states that it “does not recognize evidence” for differences in safety between high fructose corn syrup and foods that contain roughly equal nutrient sweets and foods that contain roughly equivalent nutrient sweets and mullose, honey, or other fructose content.

How will recipe changes affect Coca-Cola?

Coca-Cola makes changes to cost and product labeling, citing industry analysts with a switch from cane sugar to high fructose corn syrup. The two sweeteners come mainly from different producers, so the company needs to adjust its supply chain significantly.

Is corn syrup cheaper than sugar?

Ron Stark, senior editor at Food Industry Insider Sosland Publishing, said that it’s cheaper for U.S. food and beverage companies to use corn syrup than cane sugar.

Why did Japan establish a task force to deal with foreigners?

0

Tokyo
CNN

Japan has worked hard to attract foreigners and boost the economy, but now too much awareness is spurring the creation of a new task force as voting competition heats up ahead of Sunday’s national elections.

This issue lies on the political agenda ahead of the Senate election. This is part of the Fringe Party, nodding to the rhetoric of US President Donald Trump’s nativeist rhetoric and promoting “Japan’s first” policy.

Isba Prime Minister on Tuesday launched a task force officially ordered to promote the association of harmonious coexistence with foreigners, citing “nuisance or nuisance behavior with foreigners” and “various abnormal use” government systems “crime or nuisance behavior”;

The world’s fourth largest economy has a long history of strict immigration policies and a strong cultural tension of isolationism.

However, as the population ages rapidly and the birth rates are rising rapidly, Japan is gradually opening up to foreign workers, looking for more international tourists.

Pulling up a drawbridge could exacerbate the demographic crisis and put the tourism industry at risk, experts warn.

Here are what we know about the task force and why foreigners have become election issues.

Isba described the new office as a “command center” coordination policy for both Japanese and foreigners. Among the areas it covers are immigrants, land acquisition by foreigners and unpaid social insurance, Isba added.

He vowed to “take strict action against those who do not follow the rules.”

There were no more specific details, but the government said last month it plans to amend its policy to ban tourists and foreign residents with unpaid medical expenses.

Tourists and pedestrians will fill the streets of Shibuya in Tokyo, Japan on June 29th, 2025.

Japan’s foreign population has jumped from 2.23 million to 3.77 million over the past decade, but they still only account for 3% of the total population of over 120 million.

More noticeable is the surge in tourism over the past few years, especially since the Covid-19 pandemic.

A record 21.5 million foreign tourists visited Japan According to the Japan National Tourism Organization, this is the first half of this year. Last year, according to UN tourism, Japan was the eighth most visited country in the world by tourists and was the top of Asia.

The influx has frustrated many residents, whose lives are hampered by tourists gathering in their neighborhoods for sightseeing, shopping or scenic photography opportunities.

Authorities urged convenience store mountains to be temporarily blocked from convenience stores as visitors requested private baths as public baths rose sharply as public hot spring resort areas warning low water levels.

Some blame tourists for causing inflation and contributing to the shortage of certain supplies, including rice, which is Japan’s most important staple.

Others have problems with foreign residents who have been reportedly circumventing public health insurance and are reportedly snatching the country’s real estate It will boost prices.

A Tokyo retiree who worked for a trading company told CNN he believes foreign workers are taking away jobs for Japanese people.

“They came to Japan because they couldn’t make a living in their country,” said the 78-year-old, who asked them to remain anonymous due to the sensitive nature of the debate.

“Because the cultures are different, it’s impossible to live together.”

Kouyama Nanami, a 23-year-old office worker, said he read it on the news that a large amount of welfare assistance has been donated to residents during the day.

“I don’t think AIDS is prioritized for the Japanese,” she said.

Tanabe, a sociology professor at Waseda University in Tokyo, said many of the negative beliefs about migration, such as rising crime, stem from falsehoods and misleading claims from the campaign trail.

“There are more foreigners around us that are visible. They start to assume that public safety must be getting worse too,” he told CNN.

“As a result, negative campaigns on social media resonate with many people, leading them to think that the parties who commit to “protect” society from these imaginary threats are a better choice,” he added.

Tourists will take photos outside Yasaka Shrine at dusk in Kyoto, Japan on August 8, 2024.

He noted that crime in Japan has declined over the past 20 years despite an increase in tourists and foreign residents. “There is virtually no difference between Japanese citizens and foreigners in terms of crime rates,” he said.

In 2023, according to a white paper by the Ministry of Justice, 9,726 foreigners were arrested on suspicion of crime, accounting for 5.3°C of the total arrested. This diagram includes both tourists and foreigners.

According to political commentators, Isba’s hands were forced as they entered the final stretch and then focused on anger towards irresponsible foreigners and unruly tourists.

Sansate, minor right wing Those who have rallyed against immigrants and advanced “Japan’s first” policies have gained traction and media coverage.

Emerging parties cannot compete for a majority, but are expected to win 10-15 seats, potentially removing the majority of Ishiba’s Liberal Democrats (LDP).

LDP and its coalition partner Komeito lost a majority in the House last year for the first time in 15 years. Isba could pressure him to go down further if he loses the Senate this weekend.

“Anti-immigrant parties such as Sansate use this as a misunderstanding of the people, a public’s fear of immigration and an opportunity for foreigners to steal votes from the LDP,” said Jeffrey Hall, a lecturer in international studies in Japan.

Travelers at Haneda Airport, one of Japan's busiest air traffic hubs.

During Sunday’s campaign, Sansate Secretary General Sohei Kamiya said his party “is simply saying it’s unreasonable to use public money to hire foreigners or hire profitable companies.”

“This is not discrimination or hate speech,” he said.

Hall said setting up a new office could help LDPs show that “the problem is tough,” but there is a price to pay.

“If we become a society where Japan is closely monitoring foreigners until it feels unwelcome, it can have a detrimental effect on businesses’ ability to acquire the foreign workers they need,” Hall said.

The country’s birth rate plunged to another record low of 1.15 in 2024. This is well below the 2.1 required to stabilize the population in the absence of immigrants. This means that the working population will continue to shrink in the next few decades. This has deterred the outlook for the Japanese economy, which has already stagnated since the early 1990s.

To attract foreign workers, the government is trying to ease visa requirements and improve conditions.

Parents hug the child before they start

The number of foreign employees reached a record high of 2.3 million in October last year, according to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. The government has granted “specific skilled workers” visas to work in a variety of industries, from nursing and hospitality to construction and aviation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website shows.

During the announcement Tuesday, Isba acknowledged the importance of Japan continuing to be open-minded.

“As Japan faces challenges of declining birth rates and aging, it is essential to incorporate the vitality of the international community through the acceptance of a certain number of foreign workers and the expansion of inbound tourism.

Congress approves Trump’s $9 billion cuts to PBS, NPR and foreign aid

The GOP-led House of Representatives gave final approval to the bill just before the late-night deadline on Friday. Otherwise, you will have to spend money under the law.

play

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump is pushing for $9 billion in spending cuts – slices into public broadcasting stations PBS and NPR, US foreign aid efforts – cross the Congressional finish line just after midnight on July 18th and attack the Republican desk immediately.

The House approved the measure in a 216-213 vote in response to Trump’s official demand. Two Republicans voted NO on the second-term presidential plan. This represents just a small portion of the nearly $200 billion that Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency claims to have saved the federal government.

A large portion of the law removes funds approved by previous laws for foreign aid, including peacekeeping efforts and global health initiatives.

Russell Vert, director of management and budget, said the amount cuts represent “vain and unnecessary spending” in the White House’s formal demands on Congress.

Approximately $1 million will be acquired from public broadcasters, including PBS and NPR. Local bureaus rely more on federal grants than national counterparts, and is expected to bear the brunt of their lost funds.

Congress barely met at the midnight deadline of July 18th to approve the bill. The Senate passed a version of the spending reduction bill early in the week after Republicans, including Republicans, including Sen. Susan Collins, successfully saved funding subsidies for AIDS prevention.

Lloyd Howell resigns as executive director of NFLPA

The NFL Players Association will need new leaders.

Lloyd Howell Jr., executive director of the NFLPA, announced his resignation Thursday evening.

“It is clear that my leadership has been a distraction for the important work that the NFLPA moves forward every day, and therefore I have notified the NFLPA Executive Committee that it is coming into effect immediately as the NFLPA executive director and chair of the board of directors of NFL players,” Howell said in a statement. “We hope this will allow the NFLPA to focus on its player members ahead of the upcoming season.”

The message was also sent by the Executive Committee to NFLPA membership and obtained by USA Today Sports. Read:

“Tonight, Lloyd Howell informed us that he has resigned as the union’s executive director. We accept his resignation and appreciate his services. The board will hold a meeting as soon as possible as possible and contact our members immediately.”

Howell was under intense scrutiny in recent and in weeks following the release of a 61-page arbitration report on the “Pablo Torre Found” podcast.

In January, independent arbitrator Christopher Dronney dismissed the complaints raised by the NFLPA and determined that there was no sufficient evidence of conspiracy by the NFL owners. However, his report included the finding that the NFL would encourage owners to “encourage them to reduce their guarantees in future contracts at the March 2022 annual meeting.”

ESPN had reported that the NFL and NFLPA had put forward a “unusual non-disclosure agreement” to keep the findings of the arbitration report confidential.

“The union purposefully blocked important information regarding the operation of the NFL by agreeing to a non-disclosure agreement,” Attorney Peter Ginsberg said via ESPN. “The NFL and unions must not conspire to maintain important information from players.”

ESPN reports that Lloyd Howell has a side job with conflicts of interest

Further controversy over Howell emerged on July 10th.

ESPN reported that in addition to his job as the player union head, Howell worked as a “paid part-time consultant,” a private equity company that approved the NFL to seek ownership of minority members of the team. Howell had started consulting gigs a few months ago before beginning his role as executive director for the NFLPA.

He refused to step down from his role in the Carlisle Group after taking on an NFLPA job, ESPN reported.

“For union leaders, it would be an outrageous conflict to be interested in third parties that are consistent with the NFL,” former NFLPA lead Jim Quinn said via ESPN. “The relationship between labor and employer organizations is by definition hostile, and as a leader, you must be absolutely clear and clean so that you don’t even have to look at the conflict.”

A Carlyle Group representative told ESPN in a statement that Howell “we had no access to information about the NFL and the Carlyle process,” saying he was unaware of the federal demands.

USA Today Sports confirmed last month that the NFLPA hired law firm Wilmer Hale to consider Howell’s actions as the union’s executive director.

Lloyd Howell was involved in previous legal controversy

Prior to Howell’s election as the union’s new executive director, he served as Chief Financial Officer of technology consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton from 2016 to 2022.

In July 2023, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that it had paid a $377 million settlement arising from a whistleblower lawsuit that allegedly Booz Allen was overcharging the federal government.

The Washington Post reported that whistleblowers notified top executives, including Howell, of overcharging issues for several months.

The NFLPA hired Howell as executive director just a month before the announcement of the Booz Allen settlement.

Volvo is pushing the EU for lower US auto rates

Volvo Cars Volcarb.st’s chief executive urged the European Union in an interview with Reuters, claiming that European-made carmakers don’t need protection from US competitors.

Brussels, along with representatives from the automotive industry, spent months trying to convince Washington to lower the 27.5% tariff on European automobile imports.

“If Europe is for free trade, we are a way out and we should first drop to very low tariffs,” Hakan Samuelson said after the company reported second quarter revenue.

US President Donald Trump has threatened to raise tariffs on European Union automobile imports to 30% from August 1, bringing pressure on the BLOC to increase.

Before Trump’s tenure, the US had a 2.5% tariff on European-made cars, while the EU was 10% liable for vehicles imported from the US.

“I think that’s absolutely unnecessary. The European automotive industry definitely doesn’t need to protect it from American car builders,” he told Reuters.

The Volvo car, which is majority owned by China’s Geely Holding Geely.ul, is one of the most exposed European car manufacturers in US tariffs, as most of the cars sold there are imported from Europe.

Volvo announced late Wednesday that it will begin production in the US in the second half of 2026 as a way to ease tariffs on its bestselling Hybrid XC60.

Currently, the South Carolina plant produces only the Polestar 3 and the electric vehicle model EX90, which are struggling to gain traction with US consumers. Reuters reported Wednesday that Volvo has also begun slimming its products in the US.

“These are actions that we control, not only can we have the same opinions as others when it comes to customs duties,” Samuelson said.

Donald Trump denies reports that he wrote Jeffrey Epstein

0

play

President Donald Trump has denied a Wall Street Journal report claiming he wrote a letter to Jeffrey Epstein on his 50th birthday.

Trump called the letter “fake” in a social media post, calling the story “false, malicious, and defamatory.” He threatens to sue the newspaper.

Shortly afterwards, Trump announced in another social media post that he was directing Attorney General Pam Bondi to produce more Epstein documents in the public cry of the records.

Trump’s letters were part of a leather-bound birthday book containing dozens of other letters presented to Epstein in 2003, the journal wrote. According to the Journal, Trump’s letter ends with “Happy Birthday.”

The Trump signature, written in the form of text within the hand-drawn outline of a naked woman, is “a wavy ‘Donald’ under her waist, mimicking pubic hair,” the journal wrote.

In another post on July 17th after the publication of the Journal Story, Trump wrote:

This article highlights the past friendship with President Epstein as the controversy over the handling of Trump administration’s records reaches a hot pitch. Epstein was a wealthy convicted sex offender who died in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges.

Epstein was first arrested in 2006.

The administration’s attempt to shut down books on Epstein has sparked some of the Magazine bases speculating about the potential Epstein “client list” that the government is protecting from public places.

The Department of Justice has announced July 7th, July 7th, which shows that a “client list,” a guilty “systematic review” that says “no further disclosure is appropriate or guaranteed” revealed what the “systematic review” of the document revealed.

Several well-known Trump supporters continue to push for the release of more documents, urging the president to assault his supporters and label the Saga as “Hoax.” According to the Journal, Epstein’s birthday book, which includes Trump’s letter, was reviewed by Justice Department officials during the investigation.

Trump has threatened to sue the Journal, highlighting the media companies that have settled in his administration after the recent lawsuit.

After the journal’s story was released, Trump publicly directed Bondi to “produce all relevant large ju judge testimony subject to court approval.” Bondi responded that she was ready to ask the court to seal the transcript.

Trump said he is moving “based on the outrageous amount of publicity given to Jeffrey Epstein.”

Mexico City announces plans to tackle gentrification after mass protests

0

CNN

Mexico City officials have announced a 14-point plan to address the issue of housing and gentlemanship in the capital.

Mexico City Mayor Clara Bulgada said the agency would propose laws that would regulate rental prices and balance the rights and duties of landlords and tenants, and would suggest laws to prevent people from evacuating and regulating short-term rental properties.

Many residents say they are priced from their neighborhoods. This is, on the one hand, due to the influx of people and businesses with greater purchasing power, short-term housing rentals.

Bulgada said Wednesday that “objective and strict methodology” will be resolved to regulate temporary housing rentals to prevent residents from evacuating and to avoid “loss of community roots and identity.”

The city government will also implement rent laws and establish agencies to punish criminals.

Bulgada said living in Mexico City should be a guaranteed right to all residents, not a privilege of a few.

“The issue of gentrification is one of the most important issues in cities today, but it’s not new either. It’s a problem not only for cities but for the world as well, meaning the movement of thousands of families,” the mayor said.

The proposal comes days after residents will have on July 4th on gentrification and increased cost of living in the Mexican capital.

The demonstrations were largely peaceful and reflected a growing rage over urban inequality, but some protesters destroyed stores in wealthy neighbours and used anti-immigrant languages that Mexican President Claudia Sinbaum criticised for being xenophobia.

Frente Antigentrificación MX, one of several groups that helped organize the protest, opposed the characterization of the Sinbaum, saying the demonstrations were intended to highlight a light letter of people priced from home and demand reform from the government.

“We are not opposed to migration because gentlemanship is not a matter of migration. It’s a human right. We are opposed to violence as a model for government,” spokesman Yeshika Morales told CNN last week.

Morales said that the country’s housing costs have skyrocketed to 286% since 2005, but actual wages have fallen by 33%, citing data from the National Institute of Statistics’ Geography and the Federal Mortgage Association.

The mayor of Mexico City on Wednesday called on protesters to engage in dialogue.

“For those who are promoting marching and mobilising, I say for more reasons I will open up necessary discussions with them about this issue,” she said.

Experts say that the gentlemanship of Mexico City has been happening for decades and immigration alone cannot be blamed. However, the arrival of short-term rental platforms such as Airbnb and remote work policies during the Covid-19 pandemic turbo has imposed a discussion of gentrification in recent years.

Last week, Airbnb defended its activities in Mexico City, claiming that it helped generate more than $1 billion in the local economy last year, with guests who booked accommodation also spending money on shops and services in the capital.

This issue is not specific to Mexico City. All over Europe, tourist destinations are also protesting gentlemanship, but local governments have announced short-term rental restrictions in several cities.

A lucky mistake has led to one Massachusetts man becoming a millionaire overnight.

Having brought home $2 million in prize money, Paul Corcoran confused the dates on the final drawing of the ticket he purchased, leading him to purchase another (winning) multi-draw ticket, which was featured on the same drawing.

Corcoran, a Fitchburg resident, told the Massachusetts lottery, “I initially bought tickets for seven Powerball Drawings and mistakenly thought that the final drawing of that ticket had already occurred.”

One of the winning tickets was purchased at a grocery store in Fitchburg, and the other was purchased at a gas station in Leiminster at a gas station five miles away.

According to a news release from the Massachusetts lottery, he won two $1 million Powerball awards after the first five numbers printed on the ticket matched those selected in the drawing.

“Both Powerball tickets matched all five whiteballs drawn that night. The Whiteballs 5, 9, 25, 28, 69 and Red Powerball 5 were awarded two $1 million prizes for Cocoran,” Powerball said in a statement.

The winner feels “good” but he doesn’t know what to do with good luck.

Two days after the painting, Colcoran, who claimed his small fortune on July 11, told the Massachusetts lottery that he didn’t know how he was going to spend the money while he felt that victory was “good.”

According to Powerball, the overall odds for winning a prize are 1 in 24.9, with a chance of winning a jackpot of 1 in 292.2 million.

What is the Powerball Jackpot today?

As of July 17th, the estimated Powerball Jackpot is $288 million and its cash value is $130 million. The following drawings will be held on July 19th at 11pm (8pm ET).

How to play Powerball

You won’t win if you haven’t played it, but to play Powerball seriously you’ll need to buy a $2 ticket. This can be done in a variety of places, including local convenience stores, gas stations, and even grocery stores. In some states, Powerball tickets can be purchased online.

Once you have your ticket, you will need to select six numbers. Five of these are white balls with numbers 1 to 69. Red Powerball ranges from 1 to 26. People can also add “Power Play” for $1.

The “Power Play” multiplier can be multiplied by 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, or 10x on the prize.

If you feel unlucky or want your computer to do your job, the “quick pick” option is available. Here, the computer-generated numbers are printed on the Powerball ticket. To win a jackpot, players must match all five white balls with any order and Red Powerball.

The Powerball painting takes place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturday nights. If no one wins the jackpot, the prize money will continue to be engraved.

A Maryland man has been charged with threatening lawmakers

A Maryland man has been arrested and accused of blackmailing R-Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and her family and members of staff, federal prosecutors announced on July 17.

Seth Jason, 64, of Edgewater, Maryland, was arrested by the Capitol Police and Anne Arundel Police Department, according to the District of Columbia’s U.S. Attorney’s Office. Court records show that by threatening his family, Jason affected federal officials, affecting interstate communications with threats, tricks or threats to injuries, and interstate communications through anonymous telecommunications harassment.

He is scheduled to appear in the first court on July 17th.

From October 11, 2023 to January 21, 2025, Jason made a threatening call to Green’s district office, prosecutors said. The release states that Jason is an employee of Voice Of America in the United States, and that the phone was created from the “Studios and Control Rooms at Voice of America headquarters.”

“In eight calls made over 15 months, Jason threatened to use firearms to kill Rep. Green’s staff and his family,” federal prosecutors said.

USA Today contacted US Voice and as of July 17th, no comments were received. The Anne Arundel Police Department said in a statement that Jason is an unarmed volunteer reserve officer but is no longer affiliated with the department.

“For 15 months, I was subjected to a horrifying death threat from one individual who had worked in an American voice incredibly close to my office building,” Green said in a statement to USA Today. “Such persistent targeted harassment is deeply disturbing. It is not free speech to threaten an elected official, his family, or staff. It is a crime and must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

The arrest comes after lawmakers called for more security funds and 24-hour safety measures following the assassination of Minnesota lawmakers and her husband in June. Interim U.S. lawyers for Jeanine Pirro of the District of Columbia said at a press conference Thursday that Cole threatened Green’s family, staff and staff members, pointing to one call Jason allegedly threatened to kill Green with the book’s signature.

“You are threatening civil servants, and you are crushed by you and facing the full power of the law,” Piro said. “There is no mercy or excuse.”

Jason faces up to 27 years in prison if convicted of all charges. The attorneys listed in Jason’s court records could not comment.
