ATHENS – One of Ryanair’s planes made an emergency landing with a window “coming off” shortly after takeoff at Greece’s Thessaloniki Airport on Friday, July 10, with one passenger partially sucked out of the window, two industry sources said.
The airline said one person received medical assistance, but did not elaborate on the cause.
Ryanair said in a statement that the plane was scheduled to fly from Thessaloniki to Germany’s Memmingen Airport, but had to return to Thessaloniki “because a passenger window came off on board.”
Flightradar 24 showed that a Boeing 737 NG jet headed for Memmingen diverted to Thessaloniki on Friday morning.
According to data and sources, the same plane on Thursday night on a flight to Sarajevo diverted to Thessaloniki and landed shortly after takeoff, for unknown reasons.
Local Greek media reported that during Friday’s flight, part of the engine broke and a window broke, causing the cabin to depressurize and one passenger being partially sucked out the window. Two sources familiar with the incident provided similar details to Reuters.
Ryanair did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment on this story.
“The aircraft landed normally and passengers returned to the terminal,” Ryanair said in a statement.
Unverified videos posted on social media from the plane showed broken windows and oxygen masks hanging from the ceiling.
Greek airport officials said the plane was still on the ground in Thessaloniki and investigators were investigating the incident.
