The economy is progressing despite all difficulties. The “G” shape may be the culprit.

0

play

This is a question that has puzzled economists, investors, and strategists for the past few years. Why are American consumers reporting record-low sentiment readings yet continuing to spend as if all is well with the world?

All kinds of economic data make the question a real mystery. The University of Michigan Consumer Confidence Index hit an all-time low of 44.8 in May, marking the third consecutive month of decline. Inflation is becoming more serious throughout the economy. And the job market is lukewarm at best.

Meanwhile, spending continues to rise, but at an increasingly slower pace. So where do consumers get that appeal?

Renowned investment strategist Ed Yardeni has a theory: We live in a “G-shaped” economy.

G stands for “generation,” Yadeni wrote in a recent memo, describing a society in which “older Americans, who tend to belong to the wealthiest households, provide financial support to their younger adult children and grandchildren.”

“In our opinion, much of the affordability crisis in America today is affecting younger generations, and older generations of baby boomers are helping them deal with the crisis.”

The “G” theme is a slight inversion of another idea popular in recent economic discussions. Many analysts have noted that the economy has a pronounced “K” shape, which visually shows that the haves, represented by the top diagonal line, are doing better and better, while the have-nots, represented by the bottom line, are falling in wealth.

Yardeni’s theory is based on several other facts. Despite continued spending, disposable income has remained flat in recent months. However, since most baby boomers are retired, they are using their savings rather than their paychecks to support their expenses, he noted.

In fact, retired workers now make up a record 19.5% of the civilian working-age population, and their spending and work (or non-work) patterns certainly impact the overall economy.

As USA TODAY previously reported, Americans 45 and older control nearly 90% of the nation’s wealth, according to Federal Reserve household data.

Baby boomers (those born between 1946 and 1964) own 51% of U.S. wealth, including real estate, stocks, pension benefits, personal businesses, and other assets, valued at a total of $90 trillion at the end of 2025.

Certainly, parents helping their children and even grandchildren is nothing new. But the size of the boomer generation and the wealth they have accumulated is also at an all-time high, adding to what Yardeni calls “an unprecedented demographic shift with profound economic consequences.”

But while Yardeni believes intergenerational transfers will help sustain the economy in the future, some economists are starting to grow concerned.

On May 28, the government lowered its initial forecast for economic growth in the first quarter of 2026, mainly because consumer spending was slower than originally thought.

Spending is still higher than it was before the coronavirus pandemic made comparisons difficult, suggesting that “American households are generally in good health” overall, Troy Rudtka said.,sA senior US economist at SMBC Nikko Securities Americas made this comment in an analysis following the GDP release. But Americans are increasingly behind on their car loans, student loans and credit cards, Lutka said.

“The financial strain on household budgets became even more severe in the second quarter as a sharp rise in inflation reduced the personal savings rate to an ultra-low 2.6%,” Rudotka added. Spending is likely to fall as gas and food prices continue to rise, he said.

Caitlin Clark backlash grows over WNBA’s high-profile antics and blunders

0

play

Caitlin Clark’s honeymoon never lasted.

Any athlete who is this much hyped and this much revered will always have a chance to turn things around. It happened to LeBron James too. That happened to Tiger Woods, too. That happened to Peyton Manning, too.

But Clark’s own actions are accelerating her actions. A fiasco that would make even a C-list actor cringe. Acting on the call and disrespecting the referee. Outrage over understandable questions about the health of a player who missed much of last season with a series of injuries.

This led to Clark taking the WNBA’s own Rorschach test. Either you think she can’t do anything wrong, or you think she’s a natural brat, and although it’s only the third season, the number of people who don’t have an opinion seems to be decreasing.

It’s okay to talk trash. Tantrums are different.

Clark is a transcendent player. No one can argue with that. Her Logo 3 is still worth the price of admission, and her ability to turn games around in an instant makes the Indiana Fever a must-see every time they play. If you want to teach your kids how to be a threat to opponents, have them watch a highlight reel of Clark’s passes.

This is not a criticism of Clark’s trash-talking and pearl-grabbing, as female athletes dare to ignite the same competitive spirit as male athletes. Beef between players like Tiffany Hayes of the Golden State Valkyries and Clark is part of what makes the sport so interesting.

It’s that anger that makes people uncomfortable.

There is at least one instance every game where Clark appears to have been shot after shoving another player, or falls to the court without being touched.

Consider Thursday night’s game at Golden State. Clark was guarding Valkyries forward Cecilia Zandarasini as Zandarasini dribbled toward the basket. If there was any contact, it was minimal, but if one of the Avengers shoved him, Clark would fall backwards.

There was also at least one instance in each game where Clark reprimanded the referee for a call he didn’t get or didn’t think he deserved. She doesn’t even need to play to get excited.

Hating WNBA referees, or anyone in any sport for that matter, may be a national pastime, but there are ways to do it without coming across as condescending. Clark applauded the referee and told him to open his eyes.

Clark was also irritated by questions earlier this week about being scratched late with a back injury. Besides the Fever potentially circumventing WNBA rules, Clark is in decent health after missing all but 13 games last season with an injury that was considered OK.

Fans can be fickle about stars.

Clark isn’t the first superstar to lose luster as fans get to know him better. James has the nickname “LeFlop” and there’s a huge file of memes about him calling for fouls. There are growing complaints about the amount of time two-time MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander spends sprawled out on the court.

Even Victor Wembaneyama, beloved by most, came under fire for neglecting his mandatory media duties after Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals.

But Clark carries a burden that other athletes don’t. She is the face of the WNBA and, in some ways, the face of women’s sports. Her actions and actions impact both the current league and its future players. The last thing anyone wants is for kids learning the game these days to think that failing and whining is the right way to do it.

Especially since Clark is wrong so often.

Contrary to what the most irrational sections of Clark fandom believe, she is not being attacked. The opposing players do not chase her because they are jealous of her. The W is, and still is, a physical league, with Clark often having the ball in his hands and no spot on the court where he can’t be a threat, making Clark even tougher to guard.

Also, Clark teeth I get more calls than most players. She is averaging 6.0 free throw attempts per game this season, the ninth-best mark in the league, according to Teamrankings.com. No other Fever player averages more than 4.9 attempts per game.

Not every player has to be liked by everyone. But Clark captivated the nation with her play. Now she is in danger of rejecting people for exactly the same reason.

Jill Biden publishes book criticizing Kamala, shares Joe’s go-to TV channel

0

play

Donald Trump has repeatedly accused Joe Biden of being the worst president in American history, calling him “stupid” and “mentally insane” in one of the nation’s toughest campaigns for the White House.

But in her new book, A View from the East Wing, former first lady Jill Biden describes the strangely amicable parting words she received from the 47th president shortly after he was sworn in as her husband’s successor at the 2025 inauguration.

“After it was over and officially announced, the new president said to me, ‘If Joe needs anything, call me!’

Let me be clear: that’s unlikely.

Much of the early coverage of Jill Biden’s memoir, published by Gallery Books on June 2, focused on her chilling account of watching her husband flinch during a presidential debate with President Trump. Joe Biden’s disastrous performance fueled questions about his mental acuity and led to his reluctant withdrawal as the Democratic nominee three weeks later.

But her 275-page book contains other insights and important information. The main points are as follows.

Create an opportunity for awkward small talk

On January 20, 2025, there was no cacophony on the way to the Capitol that day.

As is customary, the outgoing first lady and the incoming first lady shared an official vehicle from the White House to the inauguration venue.

Jill Biden and Melania Trump have barely spoken to each other. First lady Melania Trump did not invite the traditional tea heir to the White House during the transition period following the 2020 election. When Jill extended the invitation after the 2024 election, Melania declined.

Fortunately, their official escort to the inauguration was John Bessent, a law professor and husband of Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who chaired the bipartisan committee that planned the ceremony, writes Jill Biden.

He seemed to arrive with a long mental list of safe topics, a blind date strategy that has been around for generations.

Jill Biden wrote that what was sure to be a difficult mission “must have drawn the shortest possible straw.” “My impression is that Amy…told him to give him a little encouragement in his step when we were in the car together.”

“Where is Barron at school?” he began, as Melania looked out the window and gave a short reply. Mr. Bessent was undaunted. Where did Baron live? Was he fun? Did he have many friends? Did they have a dog? Where in Slovenia did she grow up?

Thus ended the two mile journey. It may have felt longer than that.

You’ll never guess which TV network Biden was watching

Joe Biden has resisted calls to withdraw from the presidential race, sparking speculation that he is being shielded from bad news.

That wasn’t accurate, his wife says.

“Joe was addicted to his iPhone and Apple News feed, and his algorithm was choosing the worst of the worst,” she wrote. “He was always keeping an eye on Fox.”

She said there was no “bubble of delusional optimism” as critics charge. “He was exposed to a ton of news every day, almost all of it bad.”

Kamala Harris, a rival for the Democratic presidential nomination and Joe Biden’s running mate, provides some surprisingly critical commentary in this book.

Jill Biden talks about the 2019 primary debate in which Harris made headlines when she challenged Biden’s vote to desegregate schools 40 years ago.

“There was a girl in California who was in the second class of integrated public schools, and she was bused to school every day,” Harris declared. “That little girl was me.”

Jill Biden wrote that the implication was that he was a racist. She called it “hypocritical point-scoring” and a “gotcha moment.”

“The thought bubble above my head was full of curse words,” she recalls.

About that view from the east wing

Nine months after Jill Biden vacated the White House, construction crews demolished the East Wing. The two-story building was reduced to rubble to make way for President Trump’s “big, beautiful ballroom” adorned with gold.

She recounted the history of lost architectural elements, including those put in place by Thomas Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt, and FDR.

“The social office was destroyed. The military office was flattened. What was my office is gone,” she says. “Major landmarks and historical treasures were being treated like extreme HGTV fixer-uppers.” property brothers. ”

She laments that after four years in the White House, the loss felt personal.

Alexandra Grant makes rare comments about her relationship with Keanu Reeves

play

Keanu Reeves and Alexandra Grant have long kept details about the creative aspects of their relationship private.

In an interview with People magazine published on May 29, the visual artist opened up about what it’s like to date the “Good Fortune” star, saying, “I think he’s always very appreciative, so he’s always cautious about feedback, and I think I’m the same way.”

“You always want to be respectful and let the other person bake the cake. Just talking about love makes me sweat,” Grant told the magazine.

The painter explained that she and Reeves had a mutual respect for their work and unique creative processes, and recognized similarities between them.

“Every project has its own autonomy, it has its own team, it has its own rules, it has a beginning, middle, and end. So we’re both people who do projects, and you know, I’ve lived with John Wick, I’ve lived with Neo,” she joked, acknowledging his iconic roles in the “John Wick” and “Matrix” series.

“For example, when he’s playing a character, I really respect the understanding that this is in the middle to the end of the project. I think the same is true when painting,” she added. “When I’m in painter mode, I’m in it. I’m completely in it, and it’s not playing a character, it’s performing. Painting is also a type of performance.”

Alexandra Grant on artistic collaboration and balancing boundaries

As for their relationship, Grant explains that there is a time and space for them to collaborate on creative ideas and work on their art remotely. The two of you can talk for hours about challenging or creative ideas, or you can go your separate ways.

“I think there is a world in which we know that we can talk about any problem or challenge or creative idea and we can talk forever if we want to, and that we respect the needs of individuals to dig deep and perhaps do the process in a quiet process or in another collaboration,” she said.

Grant’s work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across the United States, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). Reeves continues to be a mainstay in Hollywood with his latest film, the dark comedy Outcome, which was released on AppleTV+ last month and also stars Cameron Diaz and Matt Bomer.

When did Keanu Reeves and Alexandra Grant meet?

The couple officially started their relationship in 2019 when they made their first red carpet appearance at the LACMA Art + Film Gala in Los Angeles. It’s unclear when the two met, but the two worked on the book, “Ode to Happiness,” which was published in 2011, with Reeves writing the poems and Grant illustrating it.

In a September 2024 interview with People magazine, Grant talked about how her relationship with Reeves has had a positive impact on her artistic work, with one friend saying, “It’s made my work more fun.”

“It’s true. We’re all humans. We’re animals,” she told the outlet. “We’re expressing ourselves from our perspective, and we certainly feel happy. I think this piece is even happier.”

Frederik Andersen wins Game 5 in memory of Claude Lemieux

Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Frederik Andersen was playing Game 5 with a heavy heart following the death of substitute and four-time Stanley Cup champion Claude Lemieux.

Andersen had a strong performance in the Eastern Conference Finals, stopping 23 shots in a 6-1 victory and leading the Hurricanes to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 2006. This is also Andersen’s first expedition.

“I can’t say enough about this team and the support they’ve given me,” he told TNT. “It was amazing.”

Lemieux died on Thursday at the age of 60, three days after attending the Canadiens’ torch passing ceremony before Game 3 at the Bell Center in Montreal.

Lemieux thought the Canadiens were the team that drafted him and won his first Stanley Cup as a rookie, but he also had ties to the Hurricanes. In addition to having Andersen as a client, his son Brendan played for Carolina in the 2023-24 season. The Hurricanes paid tribute to Claude Lemieux before Friday’s game.

Asked what he would say if Lemieux were still here, Andersen told TNT that his agent would say, “Just go get it.”

“He’s the ultimate competitor and has the biggest heart,” the goalie said. “He wanted a lot from me and this team.”

What is Mega Millions?

Mega Millions is a lottery that is played in 45 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Each ticket costs $5, and players can choose six numbers from two different number pools: five different numbers from 1 to 70 (white balls) and one number from 1 to 24 (gold mega ball), or choose Easy Pick/Quick Pick.

If you match all six winning numbers in the drawing, you win the jackpot. If there are multiple jackpot winners, the jackpot prize will be shared.

How to play Mega Millions

To play Mega Millions, you must purchase a ticket. This can be done at several locations, including local convenience stores, gas stations, and grocery stores. In some states, you can purchase Mega Millions tickets online.

Once you have your ticket, you have to choose six numbers. Five of them are white balls numbered 1-70. The golden mega ball ranges from 1 to 24.

If you’re feeling particularly unlucky or don’t want to go through the hassle of picking, you can request a “quick pick” or “easy pick.” When you use these options, your computer randomly generates numbers.

Mega Millions tickets have built-in multipliers that increase your non-jackpot prize by 2, 3, 4, 5, or 10 times. Previously, players had to pay an extra dollar to add a “Megaplier”.

Snickers gives 25 people named Reese free candy for a year

0

play

Snickers is poking fun at one of the most famous names in the candy world with a new campaign offering free candy bars to people named “Reese.”

The Mars-owned brand announced in a May 28 news release that Americans with Reese, Reese, Reese, or other spelling variations will have a chance to win a year’s worth of Snickers peanut butter bars when they sign the Snickers Peanut Butter Pledge online.

To promote its candy, Snickers formed a focus group made up entirely of people named Reese and asked comedian Eric Andre to direct a series of reaction videos in which participants sampled Snickers Peanut Butter and Snickers Peanut Butter Ice Cream for the first time.

The company says 71% of those surveyed said texture is a “non-negotiable” part of the eating experience, and Snickers Peanut Butter aims to satisfy both creamy and crunchy peanut butter fans.

Here’s what you need to know about Snickers’ peanut butter pledge.

What is Snickers peanut butter?

According to the company, Snickers Peanut Butter combines creamy peanut butter, crunchy peanuts, caramel and nougat in milk chocolate.

Mars said the product is designed to provide both creamy and crunchy textures in one candy bar, so customers don’t have to choose between two peanut butter styles.

The company also highlighted Snickers Peanut Butter Ice Cream Bars, which feature peanuts both in the ice cream and on top.

Martin Terwilliger, vice president of marketing for Mars Wrigley North America, said in a statement that the company wants to show consumers that they don’t have to compromise between creamy and crunchy peanut butter.

“We are so confident in our product that we tested it,” Terwilliger said. “The verdict is out, and it’s clear that nothing else could have been more satisfying.”

Snickers Peanut Butter and Snickers Peanut Butter Ice Cream are currently available at retailers nationwide for between $1.50 and $6 depending on location and package size. For example, a single bar costs about $1.50 at Dollar General, while a sharing size pack of Fun Size bars costs about $5.97 at Walmart.

How to apply for Snickers giveaway

Anyone whose first, middle, or last name is Reese, or an acceptable variation, can enroll by signing the pledge online through June 11.

The first 100 eligible customers will receive a special reward, and 25 will be chosen in a drawing to win a year’s worth of Snickers peanut butter products, Mars said.

Top US general meets Cuban military officials near Guantanamo Bay

WASHINGTON—The top U.S. military commander who oversees Latin America’s armed forces held an unusual meeting with senior Cuban military officials on May 29 near Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the U.S. military base, the U.S. military said, confirming a Reuters report.

Gen. Francis Donovan, commander of U.S. Southern Command, briefly discussed operational security issues with a Cuban delegation that included Cuba’s First Deputy Chief of Staff Roberto Regla Sotolongo, U.S. Southern Command announced on X News.

“Mr. Donovan also led a security assessment around the naval base and spoke with base officials about protection of troops, safety of service members and their families, and operational readiness.”

Mr. Donovan’s meeting in Cuba was the first by a Confederate commander in recent memory and came amid growing concern in Cuba about a possible U.S. military attack on the communist-held island.

The Cuban Armed Forces said on Facebook that the meeting took place with mutual consent and that both sides agreed to maintain communication.

“Both delegations positively evaluated the meeting in which issues related to security around the border of the military enclave were addressed and it was agreed to maintain communication between the two military commands,” the statement said.

The talks followed a rare visit by CIA Director John Ratcliffe to Havana in early May.

President Donald Trump has frequently cited Cuba as one of his foreign policy goals during his second term, hinting that it would be a focus once the war with Iran ends.

Cuba rejects US charges against Raul Castro over 1996 shootout

Cuba condemns the U.S. grand jury’s indictment of Raul Castro over the 1996 shooting down of the Brothers to the Rescue plane and has declared full support.

US indicts former Cuban president Raul Castro

Cuba has been an enemy of the United States for decades since Fidel Castro’s 1959 revolution.

President Trump has strong support from hard-line Cuban-Americans in Florida, who have been pushing for regime change at U.S. instigation for decades, and his administration has steadily increased pressure on the island.

On May 20, the United States formally indicted former President Raul Castro on four counts of murder for shooting down a civilian plane operated by a Miami-based exile in 1996.

The indictment was the latest example of the Trump administration’s efforts to assert U.S. influence in the Western Hemisphere.

Washington’s more active role in Latin America was epitomized by the U.S. military raid on January 3 to detain Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in Caracas and fly him to New York to face drug trafficking charges.

Maduro, a socialist allied with Havana, has maintained his innocence.

Rubio’s comments and photos raise alarm

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the son of Cuban immigrants and a former Florida senator, sounded alarm as he spoke in Havana about the national security risks posed by what he called a failed state just 90 miles from Florida.

On May 5, Mr. Rubio and Mr. Donovan posed in front of a map of Cuba in a post to X by Mr. Donovan’s Southern Command. The newspaper said the talks focused on “U.S. efforts to counter threats to the security, stability, and democracy of our hemisphere.”

Cuba’s Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez warned that any military action would lead to “bloodshed” in which thousands of Cubans and Americans would die.

President Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on countries that supply the island with fuel, imposing a de facto fuel blockade on the island and causing endless power outages, dealing another blow to the island’s already struggling economy.

Experts say Cuba’s insecurity is threatened by a migrant crisis.

Dallas Cowboys WR Parris Campbell retires at age 28

0

play

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Parris Campbell says this is his career at age 28.

Although Campbell did not announce his decision, the Cowboys officially moved the veteran receiver to the reserve/retired list on May 27.

Campbell played seven seasons in the NFL after being drafted in the second round by the Indianapolis Colts out of Ohio State. He didn’t play much in his first three seasons, but made his breakthrough in the 2022 season on the eve of free agency, recording 63 catches, 623 yards, and three touchdowns, all career highs.

Since that campaign, Campbell has appeared in just 18 total games with three different teams throughout the NFC East tour: the New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, and Cowboys.

Campbell spent most of the 2025 season on Dallas’ practice squad. The veteran appeared in just one game with the team, playing two offensive snaps and six special teams snaps without recording any statistics.

The Cowboys signed Campbell to a reserve/future contract after the season to keep him on the 90-man roster. He was slated to be on the veteran floor on a one-year deal, but he faced a struggle building a receiver room in Dallas that already included established players like CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens, Kavonte Turpin, Ryan Flournoy and Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

As such, Campbell will ride off into the sunset with just under $10.7 million in career earnings, totaling 123 catches for 1,117 yards and six touchdowns in 50 games (27 starts), according to Spotrac.com.

The children of Claude Lemieux, who passed away at the age of 60 on Thursday, May 28, posted a heartfelt message about the four-time Stanley Cup champion.

Brendan Lemieux, who followed his father into the NHL, wrote on Instagram: “Dad, I love you. My son’s favorite person will be watching from above for a while. See you soon,” he added, adding a heart emoji.

Claude’s daughter, Claudia Lemieux Bishop, posted: “Words cannot describe the level of devastation we are feeling. I love you forever daddy. Forever your only girl.”

Brendan and Claude were selected in the second round of the NHL Draft. Although he didn’t match Claude’s scoring numbers, Brendan was a gritty player like his father.

Both players have been suspended multiple times for reasons such as biting a player. Both fought Tkachuk, with Claude fighting Keith Tkachuk at the 1996 World Cup of Hockey and Brendan fighting Brady Tkachuk in 2021.

Brendan is currently playing in Switzerland. He played in the NHL from 2017 to 2024, scoring 36 goals, 38 assists, and 548 penalty minutes in 307 games. This season he has scored 13 goals in 29 appearances for Davos.

In addition to being Claude’s son, Brendan also represents his father, who became a prominent player agent after a 21-season NHL career.

Claude Lemieux’s cause of death

Claude Lemieux was found dead on Thursday, May 28, in a storage room behind the Florida furniture showroom where he was a registered agent, according to a report in the Palm Beach Post, part of the USA TODAY Network.

In response to an open records request, the Palm Beach County Coroner’s Office told USA TODAY Sports, “All public records you request regarding Claude Lemieux are exempt from public records as set forth in SB 474 – FS 406.135 (2)(c).”

The Florida law cited by the coroner’s office, enacted in 2024, excludes photos, videos, audio recordings and autopsy reports related to suicide victims from general public records requests.

Lemieux attended the Montreal Canadiens’ pregame torch ceremony the Monday before his death.

Two brands of superfood supplements sold online across the United States through Amazon, Walmart, TikTok Shop, and Target are being recalled due to possible salmonella contamination.

According to a notice published May 26 on the Food and Drug Administration’s website, the affected products include Total Nutrition Inc’s moringa-infused supplements, TNVitamins Ultra Potent Complete Green Superfood, and Doctor’s Pride Complete Green Superfood Ultra Potent Moringa Capsules.

According to the recall notice, the affected supplements were sold in white bottles with white caps and contained 120 capsules. Officials also said these supplements may be linked to salmonella outbreaks in multiple states linked to dietary supplements containing imported moringa leaf powder.

The FDA said 119 illnesses have been reported in connection with the salmonella outbreak. Of the reported illnesses, 32 people were hospitalized.

Here’s what you need to know about supplement recalls.

What products are being recalled?

The following products (including UPC and expiration date) are affected by the recall:

  • TNV Vitamins Ultra Potent Complete Green Superfood Moringa, 10,000 mg (120 Capsules)
    • Lot: 2507199, Exp. September 2027
    • Lot: 2512-304, Exp. February 2028

  • Doctor’s Pride Complete Green Superfood Super Potent Moringa, 10,000 mg (120 Capsules)
    • Lot: 2507199, Exp. September 2027

Symptoms of salmonella poisoning

Symptoms of salmonella poisoning usually begin 6 hours to 6 days after ingesting the bacteria. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the most common symptoms are diarrhea, fever, and abdominal pain.

Most healthy people recover in four to seven days without treatment, but some vulnerable groups, such as children under 5, adults over 65, and people with weakened immune systems, can develop more severe illness that requires treatment and hospitalization.

If you experience any of these more serious symptoms, the CDC recommends contacting your health care professional.

  • Diarrhea and fever greater than 102 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Diarrhea does not improve even if it continues for more than 3 days
  • bloody diarrhea
  • I’m vomiting so much that I can’t keep fluids down
  • Signs of dehydration such as not producing much urine, dry mouth or throat, and feeling dizzy when standing up

Soldiers will be invited to White House UFC events, but only if healthy

play

The Pentagon is selecting U.S. soldiers to appear in uniform at the Ultimate Fighting Championship bout at the White House in the coming weeks, but the service members must meet a waist-to-height ratio and pay for their own transportation to Washington, D.C., according to news reports and screenshots shared on social media.

The Washington Post first reported on May 29 that hundreds of military personnel have received formal requests from the Pentagon in recent days to attend a UFC fight on the White House lawn on June 14.

But only service members who aren’t overweight and meet certain height and weight requirements can participate, according to a screenshot of a Pentagon memo shared on military Facebook groups and people familiar with the matter. According to a shared memo and a CNN report, the standard is a waist-to-height ratio of less than 0.55.

And while military personnel will be given free tickets, they will have to travel to the capital at their own expense, the official said.

An Army official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said soldiers who are fans of UFC fights and meet Army standards will be given priority, which is standard practice at such events. A total of 300 tickets were made available to military personnel, with 100 of those tickets going to the Army National Guard.

The Pentagon declined to comment.

White House press secretary Davis Ingle spoke to USA TODAY about “ticket allocation” to the UFC.

“This will be one of the largest and most historic sporting events in history, and for President Trump to host it at the White House is a testament to President Trump’s vision to celebrate America’s monumental 250th anniversary,” Ingle said in a statement to USA TODAY.

About 1,200 of the 4,300 participants in the fight will be active military, UFC CEO Dana White said in an interview with TIME. The game is invitation-only, but a giant screen will be installed on the Ellipse, allowing an additional 85,000 people to watch the game for free without tickets.

Pentagon Secretary Pete Hegseth has frequently criticized the military for relaxing physical fitness requirements. In a speech to military leaders last year, he criticized the “fat military” and “fat generals and admirals.”

The UFC bout is not the first time the Pentagon has introduced military weight requirements into the backdrop of a high-profile televised event. When President Donald Trump spoke at Fort Bragg last June, Army leaders carefully selected soldiers to attend the event based on appearance and banned “fat soldiers” from attending, Military.com reported.

Preparations are well underway for the UFC bout, which will coincide with President Trump’s 80th birthday and National Flag Day. Construction is underway at the White House to prepare for a giant cage and 5,000-seat arena where the fights will take place.

The move comes as the U.S. government prepares for a major celebration this summer to mark the nation’s 250th anniversary. States across the country are holding celebrations ranging from running races to battle re-enactments.

On President Trump’s birthday last year, the Army held a huge military parade in downtown Washington, with thousands of uniformed soldiers marching, tanks rolling through the city and people parachuting out of planes. The parade was criticized for inappropriately politicizing the military.

Judge orders Trump’s name removed from Kennedy Center

WASHINGTON – A federal judge has ordered President Donald Trump’s name removed from the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, ruling that the Trump administration’s rebranding of the iconic facility was illegal.

In a May 29 opinion, U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper said the Kennedy Center must remove Trump’s name from its name within 14 days. This includes removing recently installed signage on the center’s facade and removing Trump’s name from other official materials on the center’s website.

Mr. Cooper, an appointee of former President Barack Obama, also reversed plans to close the Kennedy Center for two years, which had been scheduled to begin in July in preparation for major renovations to the building.

In a 94-page opinion, the justices said the Kennedy Center’s board of trustees, made up mostly of Trump supporters, violated the 1964 federal law that established the center, which makes clear that “the Kennedy Center must be named after and honor only President Kennedy.”

The judge said changing the name from the Kennedy Center would require Congressional approval.

Trump says he will transfer centrist power to Congress

The ruling, a major blow to President Trump’s efforts to reform the institution to his liking, granted partial summary judgment in a lawsuit filed by Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-Ohio), a former ex-officio member of the Kennedy Center Board of Trustees, who opposed the name change.

“The Court does not intend to dictate how the Center should operate, nor prescribe any specific plans for construction, closure, or other future facilities. The Court merely imposes on the Kennedy Center Board certain minimum requirements imposed by law,” the opinion reads.

President Trump slammed the judge’s decision in a lengthy post on Truth Social and vowed to respond by working with Congress to “give this broken system back to them so they can decide what to do with it.” President Trump said he has directed the Commerce Department to carry out the transfer to Congress.

“Judge Cooper should be ashamed of himself!” Trump said. “I cannot be involved in a situation where danger to the public is openly prevalent. Unless I am free to do what I do better than anyone else and can reclaim this facility physically, financially and artistically, I have no interest in continuing the desperate journey to ‘NEVER NEVER LAND.’

In December, the center’s board of directors voted to change the name of the Kennedy Center to the Trump Kennedy Center. Less than 24 hours after the action, a new sign was installed on the outside of the building reading “Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Performing Arts Center.”

President Trump complained about the “woke” programming at the Kennedy Center and promised to bring in better shows and musical acts while setting aside $257 million in federal funding for what he claimed were badly needed renovations.

Judge says board didn’t have enough information about center closure

In blocking plans to close the Kennedy Center for two years, Cooper questioned the credibility of Executive Director Matt Floca’s conclusion that renovations could not be made without closing the public center.

The judge also said the center’s board had “no meaningful say” on the issue when it voted to close on March 16. President Trump had already announced his closure plans on Truth Social on February 1st.

“Through social media posts, the trustees learned of the plan to close the center at the same time as the general public,” the judge said. “They were robbed of time and information and had no meaningful opportunity to consider what was probably the most significant decision in the center’s life since it opened in 1971.”

The Trump administration is expected to appeal the decision.

Despite President Trump’s pledge to transfer control of the center to Congress, a Kennedy Center spokesperson said the board plans to appeal the judge’s decision.

“On appeal, we are confident that the court will uphold the board’s intent to recognize President Trump’s historic contributions to our nation’s cultural center,” Roman Dalavi, the center’s vice president of operations, said in a statement.

Dharavi did not say whether the center would remove Trump’s name from the center’s facade.

Regarding the judge’s decision to block the center’s two-year closure, Dharavi said the center “will carefully consider the decision, although the reality remains that urgent and extensive repairs are needed.”

A Justice Department spokesperson also indicated plans to appeal. “We continue to champion President Trump’s ability to restore the center to its former glory as the premier performing arts center in the country, if not the world.”

Democrats and Kennedy’s family welcomed the judge’s decision, with some noting that the ruling came on the late president’s birthday. Kennedy was born on May 29, 1917.

“Today is a fitting birthday present for my uncle,” Maria Shriver, Kennedy’s niece, said in a post on the X show. “I know there will probably be an appeal and the story is not over, but today let’s celebrate a great birthday present.”

Talarico leads Paxton in Texas Senate poll after Republican runoff elections

Days after Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton defeated Sen. John Cornyn in the Texas Senate Republican runoff, a new poll shows him narrowly leading his Democratic challenger.

A new poll by Texas Poll shows state Rep. James Talarico, the Democratic candidate, leading Paxton in the race to become the next U.S. senator from Texas in November.

Talarico is seeking to become the first Democrat to win the seat since Sen. Bob Kruger in 1993. Paxton is trying to maintain Republican control of the seat.

The poll was conducted as both sides are working to solidify their political parties ahead of the November general election.

Talarico leads Paxton within poll’s margin of error

The poll was conducted from May 27th to May 28th among 1,670 people believed to be voting in the general election, and had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points.

According to the poll, Mr. Talarico leads Mr. Paxton 47% to 44% in the U.S. Senate general election, with support from 72% of moderates and 64% of independents.

Another important finding was that Paxton failed to win over likely voters to vote for Cornyn in the runoff.

Almost a third (30%) said they would vote for Talarico, and 44% said they would vote for Paxton. The remaining 23% are undecided or say they will not vote.

Among Republican runoff voters who plan to support Talarico, 51% cite Paxton’s criminal activity and corruption as the main reason.

For context, Paxton was indicted in 2015 on three felony counts of securities fraud. The case was dismissed in March 2024. Paxton was also impeached by the Texas House in 2023, but was acquitted by the Texas Senate later that year.

Only 10% gave positive reasons for supporting Talarico, while the remaining 10% described themselves as passive voters and said they supported Talarico because they could not find an acceptable alternative. Another 7% cited Paxton’s alignment with Donald Trump, and 5% expressed widespread disillusionment with the Republican Party.

Talarico is more likable than Paxton or Trump.

According to the poll, 38% of Texans view Paxton favorably. As noted in the poll, he is the second most unpopular major political figure after John Cornyn.

As for Trump, 48% of Texans support the president.

In contrast, Talarico is viewed favorably by 47% of Texans.

Affordability ranks as the top issue for Texas voters

Polls show that Texans cite prices and the cost of living as their top concern, with 23% of voters citing it as a priority, more than twice as many as any other issue.

This was followed by democracy and voting rights at 11%, immigration at 10%, health care and access at 9%, and economic growth and job creation at 7%.

United Healthcare Reduces Use of Prior Authorizations for Children

0

play

UnitedHealthcare announced on May 29 that it will reduce pre-authorization requirements for the children it covers by two-thirds by the end of 2026.

Some of the previous authorizations that UnitedHealthcare announced it would cut or reduce include some diagnostic services, routine surgery, and specialty care such as cardiology, neurology, pulmonology and orthopedics.

The move, which targets paperwork for doctors and families, is part of the insurer’s goal announced May 5 to eliminate prior authorization requirements for 30% of medical services after complaints that paperwork delays or denies people care.

Physicians and patients have long criticized pre-authorization, the process by which insurance companies review applications before allowing doctors and other health care providers to bill for medical services or prescriptions. Doctors say administrative measures routinely delay or deny treatment.

Major insurance companies, including UnitedHealthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Kaiser Permanente, and Humana, have vowed to reduce their use of prior authorizations.

UnitedHealthcare also announced that it would implement “accreditation waivers” for some procedures at some children’s hospitals. UnitedHealthcare said in a news release that these exemptions will be based on the children’s hospital’s “consistent use of established medical practices.”

UnitedHealthcare did not name the hospitals eligible for such exemptions, but the insurer said the hospitals are part of an “extensive network of nationally recognized pediatric centers across medical and surgical specialties.”

The insurer said it would eliminate prior authorization requirements for other pediatric services, including some diagnostic imaging, sleep studies and routine testing outside of the hospital. UnitedHealthcare maintains prior authorization requirements for complex and experimental treatments.

The child care review changes will apply to people covered by UnitedHealthcare’s private insurance and Medicaid, a federal-state health care program for low-income families and some people with disabilities.

UnitedHealthcare has vowed to reduce prior authorizations for some outpatient surgeries, diagnostic tests such as echocardiograms, outpatient treatments and chiropractic care by the end of 2026 as part of a previously announced effort to lower administrative hurdles for patients of all ages.

Demi Moore calls Rumer Willis’ ex-girlfriend ‘unstable’ amid custody battle

Rumer Willis is embroiled in a tense legal battle over custody of her 3-year-old daughter Louetta with ex Derek Richard Thomas.

In July, Thomas, 30, filed a petition in Los Angeles seeking to establish a relationship with the actress, 37, requesting visitation orders and joint legal and physical custody of Louetta, according to documents obtained by USA TODAY.

Willis has filed multiple responses since the beginning of the year, and in her Jan. 21 filing, she alleged that Thomas “engaged in an ongoing pattern of emotional abuse” during their two-year relationship, “often in the presence of or while confined in a car with a minor child.”

She claimed that Louetta’s “continued coercive control through prolonged, cyclical verbal attacks that were either unable or unwilling to stop” left her “visibly traumatized” and resulted in her “crying a lot, being irritable, and having difficulty napping or sleeping.”

Willis and Thomas went to mediation in August, where they reached a temporary custody agreement.

The arrangement allowed Thomas to spend six to seven hours a day with Louetta in Los Angeles or Sun Valley, where Willis and Louetta lived, according to the documents. Willis also agreed to facilitate communication and visits between the singer and her daughter.

Willis said in a January response that Thomas “is not taking advantage of his essentially unlimited custody time with his daughter at Sun Valley. Instead, he is making every visit about himself and his needs with a constant combative aggressiveness that seeks only to create and stay there, creating problems rather than seeking easy, readily available solutions.”

Willis also claimed that Thomas was aware that Thomas was in Los Angeles to see his father, Bruce Willis, who has frontotemporal dementia, and that it was causing “significant stress and confusion” regarding their custody plans and interactions.

“[Thomas]has made it clear that this is not important to him,” she said in the filing, adding that “he has often waived time with Louetta in favor of agreeing to very basic requests, such as maintaining Louetta’s napping habits and allowing nanny visits.”

She asked for the temporary agreement to be made permanent, with amendments that would limit the hours to three to four days a week and “restrict the child’s driving, have him supervised by a nanny at no cost, and not allow his girlfriend to be present due to relationships and known fights in front of the child.”

Willis also asked the court to order Thomas to undergo a 730 Child Custody Evaluation, a mental health evaluation, saying Thomas has shown a “lack of ability to responsibly parent his young child by putting his needs above his own.” Ms Willis also claimed that Mr Thomas had a “history of erratic and abusive behavior during relationships” and cited “his gross abusive and hostile behavior” during their time together.

Although Willis is abstinent from drugs and alcohol, Willis further claimed to be a “chronic daily drug user.” Although she doesn’t know what his habits are after their breakup in 2024, she said, “His behavior and personality traits are typical of drug users: emotionally abusive, irrational, constant bickering, illogical resentment, hostility, immaturity, impulsiveness, lack of ambition, joblessness, and an inability to even consider other people’s needs above his own.”

In a separate filing, Thomas denied the drug abuse allegations as “false.”

Demi Moore told court she saw Thomas being ‘aggressive’ and ‘erratic’

As part of her application in January, Willis’ mother Demi Moore wrote a five-page statement about her experience with Thomas, claiming he had been acting “very strange” since they first met in June 2022. The Substance star, 63, said Willis was “constantly under stress” during her pregnancy due to their relationship and that Thomas “always put himself and his needs first.”

“Derek always sucks the joy out of every encounter I have with him,” Moore said. “He wants to put Rumer at odds with our family, causing Rumer unnecessary stress and fear to this day.”

Demi Moore talks about Bruce Willis’ battle with dementia

Demi Moore shared insight into her ex-husband Bruce Willis’ battle with dementia during a recent appearance on Oprah Winfrey’s podcast.

Unbranded – Entertainment

Moore claimed that during Willis’ home birth, Thomas “entered the delivery bed in an aggressive and abrupt manner” and asked Willis to come out, before he “got angry and pouted and took everything into his own hands”, “effectively ruining what was supposed to be one of the happiest moments of her life”.

When Louetta was a newborn, Moore claimed Thomas was “arguing” with Willis over wanting to smoke marijuana around the baby.

“Rumer, my other daughters, and I became concerned that Rumer was unstable,” Moore wrote. “Rumer told me that Derek was always getting into fights and putting her under extreme stress. She said she wouldn’t let her sleep at night because he wanted to keep arguing into the night.”

Thomas maintains parental competence and denies Willis’ accusations

In a written statement following Willis’ January response, Thomas said, “I did not engage in any form of domestic violence, including active ‘coercive control,'” and that while her relationship with Willis was “unhealthy,” there was “no violence, physical or psychological aggression, or intimidation from my side.”

Mr Thomas said he and Willis have a “great, loving, very supportive relationship with our daughter” and insisted he was “a very consistently involved father”.

“At no time have any legitimate questions been raised regarding my parenting or ability to meet Louetta’s every need,” he said. “Louetta has never suffered for any reason, suffered no injury of any kind, experienced any trauma or emotional or physical abuse, or been neglected while in my care. (Willis) has not detailed a single credible instance of abuse or neglect by me.”

Americans rely on side jobs to help pay their living expenses. Which one has the highest salary?

0

play

Whether it’s delivering food late at night, selling homemade crafts online, or creating social media content in hopes of landing a brand deal, nearly one in three Americans has turned to a side hustle to make ends meet as the cost of essential goods rises.

After the start of the pandemic, there was a boom in side hustles and small business creation as inflation soared and remote work gave employees back time spent commuting.

Years later, prices are rising again, and a new survey from Omnisend finds that 28% of Americans have started a side hustle. Almost half of them (49%) started an app in the past year, and about 54% said they started an app “to make extra money for bills and necessities.”

Another study by ZipRecruiter found that the percentage of Americans with a side hustle is even higher, with 35% having another source of income. Nicole Bashaw, an economist at ZipRecruiter, said that in the wake of historically low job growth in 2025, people are relying on second jobs not only to cover basic necessities, but also to build a financial cushion. This is because they fear layoffs in a weak job market outside of a few resilient sectors.

“The market is where it was last year, and I think a lot of people were saying, ‘If I lose my job now, it’s going to be really hard to find another job,'” Bashaw said. “The reason we add things is just to prepare for a ‘what if’ environment.”

Who has a side job?

Side jobs are popular across generations and income groups.

Gen Z is most likely to become an entrepreneur because they have an entrepreneurial spirit, but they are not alone. A Bankrate survey last year found that 34% of Gen Z, 31% of Millennials, 23% of Gen X, and 22% of Baby Boomers are looking for it.

And they’re not just for people passing by.

In fact, high-income earners are the most likely to have a side hustle. ZipRecruiter’s research found that about 45% of workers making more than $150,000 work in adjunct jobs, compared to about 31% of workers making less than $25,000 and about 31% of workers making between $25,000 and $50,000.

“It’s an old adage: The more money you have, the easier it is to make money,” says Cory Cantenga, LinkedIn’s head of economics for the Americas. “For example, you’re an AI engineer right now and you work at a company where there are a lot of AI consulting jobs available. You’re just sitting around waiting for work.”

What are the most popular side jobs?

E-commerce has emerged as the most popular way to make extra money, with people selling handmade goods, used goods, and various digital products on sites like eBay, Etsy, and Facebook Marketplace.

According to a report from Omnisend, about 46% of people with a side hustle sell or resell products online, 31% do freelance work, and 21% create social media content or run a blog.

“People are going out less, especially when they have less money. They’re wearing fewer clothes, they’re wearing fewer shoes. It’s easy to resell these things,” said Greg Zakowitz, an e-commerce advisor at Omnisend, adding that the popularity of the resale market may have Americans wondering “how can I get money with minimal effort?”

E-commerce seems to be the answer. Approximately 39% of Omnisend survey respondents in e-commerce side businesses said they earn more than $1,000 per month. This compares to about 28% of freelancers, 26% of food delivery workers, and 19% of content creators.

What is the most profitable side hustle?

BestBrokers’ analysis using Upwork income data ranked popular side hustles based on profitability and career potential.

The study found that life coaches earn the highest hourly wages, averaging $150, but that “demand is largely driven by a person’s brand and reputation.” Branded content creators are next on the list, earning an average hourly wage of $40, but their income is unstable in the early stages. While income is determined by traffic and conversions, affiliate marketers earn an average of $37.50 per hour.

The analysis found that e-commerce freelancers, photographers, T-shirt designers, influencer marketing freelancers, copywriters, and tutors earn an average hourly wage of more than $30. It found that photo editors, proofreaders, Canva designers, blog writers, and digital artists earn an average hourly wage of more than $20.

Zakovic said people looking to start a side hustle should remember three things: Time is money, understanding your finances is important, and being realistic doesn’t hurt.

“What people don’t realize is that you have to look at the next step,” he says. “The next step may be a cliff. You must be prepared to load a parachute.”
