Trump asks the university to sign compactly to boost access to funds

The Trump administration has called on nine universities to sign a compact that commits schools to adopt Trump’s higher education agenda.

play

WASHINGTON – The Trump administration is encouraging leaders at nine universities to sign a compact that commits schools to adopt President Donald Trump’s higher education policy agenda in exchange for prioritized access to federal funds.

Administrators from nine prominent universities, both private and public institutions, received an October 1 letter from the White House, urging them to sign a vast 10-page “Compact for the Excellence of Higher Education.”

The effort illustrates the escalation of Trump’s fight to rebuild universities and universities that Republicans have long criticised as overwhelmingly liberal. Critics, including one of the nation’s leading lobbying groups for university presidents, denounced the compact as the government challenged academia.

The 10-point contract obtained by USA Today will commit participating schools to 15% of student organizations to reduce admission to international faculty, and will freeze tuition fees over the next five years. It also requires applicants to take SAT, ACT or other similar admissions tests.

Universities need to adopt policies that protect “academic freedom” from all perspectives in the classroom and eliminate “institutional units” that “deliberately punish, neglect, and even set fire to violence against conservative ideas.”

The compact also requires schools to eliminate race, gender and ethnicity as factors in their enrolment. Adopts “institutional neutrality” that limits professors and other employees to express political views in arguments that affect schools. Sports and bathroom facilities use strict definitions of men and women. They also need “course conditions” that disrupt campus or prohibit demonstrations targeting other students.

The compact, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, was sent to Vanderbilt University leaders to Vanderbilt University, the University of Pennsylvania, Dartmouth University, the University of Southern California, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Brown University, the University of Texas, the University of Arizona and the University of Virginia.

University agreeing to the compact will receive a competitive advantage over federal education funding, White House officials told USA Today.

Officials said federal funding is not limited to schools signed by the compact.

Higher ED lobby and Newsom respond

Ted Mitchell, chairman of the US Council of Education, represents around 1,600 presidents of the university and university, criticising the compact as a humiliation for academic independence. “Efforts to reward or punish agencies based on compliance with the views of government officials should plague all Americans,” Mitchell said in a statement.

“Defining what constitutes an active, free intellectual environment is not the role of the federal government, and its impact on freedom of speech and academic freedom is cold,” said Mitchell, who served as the Obama administration’s secretary of education.

Democrat California Gov. Gavin Newsom warned in an X post that the University of California would “beat Donald Trump’s will and sign this crazy “compact” and lose billions of state funds.” The University of Southern California is the only California school to receive a letter from the White House.

“California will not bankroll schools that approve academic freedom,” Newsom said.

The compact comes after Trump previously threatened to withhold federal funding for lawsuits such as Israeli war in Gaza, transgender policies, climate initiatives, diversity, equity and inclusion programs.

According to The New York Times, the letter accompanying the compact was signed by Education Sec. Linda McMahon; Director of the White House Domestic Policy Council. and May Mailman, senior White House adviser to the Special Project, which drives the Trump administration’s agenda on higher education.

Playing a facilitating role was Mark Rowan, CEO of private equity Apollo Global Management, who brought together conservative scholars, scholars and policymakers in 2024 to create a document on the overhaul of higher education. According to sources familiar with the effort, it later evolved into a White House university compact.

In 2023, Rowan was one of the University of Pennsylvania’s major benefactors and led a pressure campaign against then-President Elizabeth McGill before resigning amidst anti-Semitism allegations on campus.

The Trump administration has launched investigations of several well-known universities over Palestinian protests over Israeli attacks on Gaza.

The government reached the settlement to settle probes at Columbia and Brown University, which accepted requests from the Trump administration. Columbia agreed to pay the government more than $220 million, while Brown said it would pay $50 million to support local workforce development.

Trump said this week that his administration is close to dealing with Harvard, which includes a $500 million payment by the university.

How Jaguar Land Rover Cyber Attacks will affect buyers and owners

0

play

  • Jaguar Land Rover is manufactured that shutters unstable cyber attacks.
  • Experts say the Jaguar Land Rover is well-supplied with new vehicles, but replacement parts can be a problem.

Jaguar Land Rover fans are unlikely to be pushed to the company’s competitor’s shopping after last month’s disruptive cyber attack, but customers looking for replacement parts for luxury vehicles could be compressed in the coming months.

The Jaguar Land Rover owners could feel a pinch from the issues with the purse service.

The iconic British company owned by Indian Tata Motors has received some support and is trying to solve the problem, but the situation is not expected to be resolved anytime soon.

How extensive was the cyber attack?

It’s a wide range of things to stop manufacturing and settle it gently. On September 2, the company reported that it had “aggressively” shut down the system. On Monday, September 29, the company announced that “some sections of its manufacturing operations will resume in the coming days.”

Erin Keating, executive analyst at Cox Automotive, said the attack hit the automaker’s suppliers particularly hard. This is one reason the UK government moved to reinforce its supply chain with a $2 billion loan guarantee, according to Reuters.

Cyberattacks are not new in the automotive industry, and Jaguar Land Rover is of course a casualty, making it not unique among automakers.

Last year, a cyberattack on Chicago-based CDK Global forced the company to overthrow car dealership operations across the country and shift it to paper records.

Last month, Stellantis, the maker of Jeep, Lamb, Chrysler, Dodge and Fiat, admitted to a violation of customer data. This highlights how basic contact information has been included, but it highlights how extensive this threat has become.

“We are in a world where cyberattacks are another potential problem in manufacturing. It was an isolated incident, but no one should expect JLR to be their final target,” says Sam Fiorani, Vice President of Global Vehicle Forecasting for Vendors Solutions.

How does cyberattacks affect buyers?

Experts say that finding a new car in the lot should not be an issue now, as Jaguar Land Rover has enough stock in the US. Keating pointed out that both Jaguar and Land Rover brands have a supply of new vehicles for over 100 days (over 200 for Jaguar).

Keating said that for those who want to order a new car to get the right colour for their new car, it is likely to be longer than not.

Fiorani, like other foreign automakers, had stockpiled stock and provided a bit of cushion ahead of tariffs, but “a month of lost production will be digging into that supply, affecting sales later this year.”

Is there a problem with the dealer?

The National Automobile Dealers Association said in a statement on Wednesday, October 1st that dealers are undoubtedly affected.

“The recent cyberattacks on Jaguar Land Rover have had a major impact on dealer operations, bringing disruptions to vehicle registration, parts procurement and repair services as some systems remain offline. Despite these challenges, dealers are operating very enthusiastically to meet the needs of their customers.

What does it mean to maintain a vehicle?

According to Fiorani, service issues are expected and cost the consumer.

“Customers can see extended stays in-store for Land Rover and Jaguar by the end of 2025 due to a lack of parts. A shortage of parts always leads to increased costs as everyone is in a hurry to get what’s available to everyone,” Fiorani said. “Right-day maintenance, which usually requires product parts such as windshield wipers and oil filters, may not have much impact.”

Will used sales be affected?

The chances are low.

“The new Jaguar and Land Rover buyers are a very different group than what they bought, and instead of waiting for a new defender or Range Rover, it’s rare for future new buyers to step into used lots,” Fiorani said.

Most of the difference is in income levels. According to Keating, customers who buy new vehicles from the company typically earn more than $200,000 a year.

She said the average listed price for the Jaguar is $75,000 and the new Land Rover is $108,000.

Jaguar Land Rover models “have their own unique charm,” so these customers also tend to be more brand loyal. Certainly, buyers may visit BMW or Mercedes-Benz dealers, but these buyers are overwhelmingly waiting for a Land Rover or Pony.

Education Department emails denounce Democrats for government shutdown

0

Messages from the official accounts of Furloughed staff changed to point to the Senate Democrats’ fingers on Wednesday.

play

WASHINGTON – On the first day of government shutdowns, the official US Department of Education email accounts began sending out-of-office messages to Democrats due to the funding crisis.

“Thank you for contacting me,” one message said. “On September 19, 2025, the House passed a clean, continuing resolution, HR 5371. Unfortunately, Democrats are blocking the passage of HR 5371 in the Senate.

Automatic response is the latest example of the Trump administration to use official government levers in a new and controversial way that pressures Democrats to end the closure. Other federal agencies have created equally partisan messages from typically non-political civil servants amid legislative conflicts over disagreements related to healthcare reductions.

Two Furloughed employees told USA Today they were deeply annoyed by seeing messages sent through their email accounts. They felt it was likely to violate the Hatch Act. The Hatch Act prohibits federal employees from certain political activities.

The agency’s public relations officers were also full and we were unable to contact them for comment.

Shelia Smith, the union president representing workers in the education sector, said the email had spurred widespread deterioration among her members. They have already experienced “professional whiplash,” she said.

She herself has been taking paid administrative leave since March, but emails outside Smith’s office have also been changed. Her departure from work “has nothing to do with Senate Democrats,” she said.

“It has something to do with the fact that this administration put me on paid administrative leave and implemented illegal expansions,” she said.

The education sector has already spent months involving months from deep cuts in the Trump administration. The agency cut staff in half earlier this year through layoffs, acquisitions, retirements and other departures. The lawsuit continued to be fired, which allowed the Supreme Court to remain primarily there while discussing their legality.

The education department employed around 2,117 employees this week after Congressional lawmakers failed to reach the deal on Sept. 30 to maintain federal lighting. According to the agency’s emergency response plan, around 330 staff members were scheduled to remain in the closure.

Political messages about the closure were also produced by other federal agencies. The Housing and Urban Development Agency website now states, “Extremists left in Congress will shut down the government. HUD will use the resources available to help Americans in need.”

“I heard all the cry and the protests and people say this is propaganda and that it’s a violation of the Hatch Act,” Housing Secretary Scott Turner said.

Tesla posts strong sales as EV credits expire and mask value is recorded

0

play

Tesla surprised Wall Street with record quarterly sales as consumers rushed to steal electric vehicles before the federal tax credit expired, analysts said.

The EV Giant delivers record 497,099 vehicles worldwide between July and September, up 7.4% from a year ago, surpassing the average analyst estimate of 439,600 compiled by Bloomberg. Combined sales of the Model Y SUV and Model 3 sedan increased by 9.4% to 481,166 vehicles, Tesla said.

Tesla’s stock fell on October 2nd, but according to Forbes, it easily captured the previous day value of Tesla CEO Elon Musk, which exceeded $500 billion. According to Forbes, this is the first time anyone has been worth this much.

Tesla’s powerful performance was not surprising. Ford recorded sales of EVs over the same period, and GM doubled sales, but analysts warned that the good times may not last as the $7,500 tax credit expired. Credits for the new EV purchase expired on September 30th.

“The future is extremely uncertain as these credits are no longer available,” said Kevin Roberts, director of economic and market information at research and shopping site Cargurus. “We expect EV demand to decline after this recent sales, particularly in response to the availability of tax credits, but how quickly it could fall.”

What do EV manufacturers predict?

EV manufacturers are hoping to see sales slower. “We’ve already seen many automakers cancel or scale back EV product plans,” Roberts said.

Ford CEO Jim Farley Ford recently estimated that EV demand could be in half with the expiration of the tax credit.

He also said companies are adjusting prices and adjusting braces to slow down. Hyundai cut the price of electric-ion SUVs, and Tesla increased the lease price, he said.

Even Mask has already outlined the company’s pivots for self-driving cars and robots. He also focuses on more advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and energy deployment.

Why do Tesla stocks continue to rise?

Investors have looked past the ambiguous outlook for Tesla’s major business sales EVS, as they believe Musk can lead the company to the next big thing.

It also helps Tesla’s board and musk develop confidence. Board proposal investors vote for a new $1 trillion salary plan for masks. The full award offers more than 423 million additional shares to Mask.

Musk is already Tesla’s largest shareholder, earning about 12% of the company’s stake. Last month, Musk purchased approximately $1 billion worth of Tesla stock, the first open market purchase of the electric car maker’s stock since February 2020, regulatory filings showed.

As a result of that optimism, Tesla shares rose about 15% this year.

Is Elon Musk the wealthiest person in the world?

Recent profits from Tesla stocks have helped Musk regain the title of the world’s wealthiest person from Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, and become the first person to surpass his $500 billion net worth, Forbes said.

In a short time as the world’s wealthiest person on September 10, after Oracle’s stock surged due to strong revenues and AI cloud contracts, Ellison returned to second place with a fortune of around $350.7 billion.

Ellison’s net worth peaked at $393 billion.

Israeli forces intercept aid fleet and spark global protests

  • Israeli forces intercepted in Gaza a fleet of about 40 boats carrying aid and more than 400 activists, including Greta Samberg.
  • Activists, including Samberg, are expected to be detained and expelled from Israel.
  • The interception sparked international condemnation, with Turkish and South African leaders criticising the action.
  • Organizers said the fleet was a non-violent humanitarian mission, and Israel described it as a violation of provocation and blockade.

Israel faced international condemnation and protest on Thursday, October 2nd, after its forces welcomed more than 400 foreign activists in Gaza, including Swedish campaigner Greta Samberg.

The camera, broadcasting live feeds from the boat, verified by Reuters, showed Israeli soldiers armed with helmets and night vision goggles on board the ship, and passengers raised their hands and dressed in the vest of life.

A video from Israeli Foreign Ministry showed Samberg, the most prominent of the passengers, sitting on a deck surrounded by soldiers.

Flotilla members could be expelled next week

The 22-year-old Samberg, best known for her environmental protests, had pre-recorded a video released on her behalf after the ship boarded.

“If you’re watching this video, I was accused and taken away by the Israeli military against my will. Our humanitarian mission was non-violent and I was following international law,” she said.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said he hopes members of the fleet will be expelled from Israel on Monday and Tuesday and sent to the European capital on charter flights.

“All passengers are safe and healthy,” said Israel’s Foreign Ministry in X after they began being taken to land in Ashdod.

“One of the last vessels of this provocation remains far away. When it approaches, it enters an active combat zone and prevents attempts to violate the blockade.”

The voyage organizer, Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), said an estimated 443 volunteers were detained, some of which were transported to one large cargo ship before landing.

Turkey blames “thuggery” directed at flotilla

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan criticized the Israeli attack on Thursday, saying that he had shown that Israel’s government had no intention of growing hopes for peace.

“I denounce the strong men directed at the global smooth fleet who have set out to look to provide humanitarian assistance to oppressed Palestinians in Gaza, calling attention to the wildness of children dying of starvation in Gaza,” he said in a speech by his AK party official in the capital Ankara.

The Istanbul prosecutor’s office said it has launched an investigation into the detention of 24 Turkish citizens, reported by the Turkish state-owned Anadolu news agency.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa urged Israel to quickly release South Africans in their fleet, including nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela, grandson of former president Nelson Mandela.

Suhad Vishara, director of Adala, an Israeli human rights group and legal centre, is expected to be transferred to the immigration department upon arrival in Ashdod.

“Of course, the main concerns of this stage, their well-being, their health, and they also make sure they all get legal advice before the hearing,” Vishara told Reuters on Thursday.

Famous opposition to Gaza blockade The fleet, which sailed in late August, transports medicines and food to Gaza, consisting of more than 40 civilian ships, including counsels, lawyers and activists.

It was not clear how much aid it carried, but it represented the highest symbol of the opposition to Israel’s Gaza blockade.

Israeli officials have repeatedly denounced the mission as a stunt.

The advances in the fleet across the Mediterranean seas have attracted international attention in case countries, including Turkey, Spain and Italy, needed assistance to raise repeated warnings from Israel, in case their citizens needed assistance.

The interception of Israeli fleets sparked protests in Italy and Colombia, but the protests were also called in Greece, Ireland and Türkiye. The Italian union called for a general strike on Friday.

Hamas has expressed support for activists

Israeli navy previously approached the fleet’s active combat zone, warned them that it was violating legal blockades and asked organizers to change courses. They had offered to peacefully transfer aid to Gaza through secure channels.

The fleet is the latest seaborne attempt to break Israel’s Gaza blockade, many of which have been turned into wastelands after almost two years of war.

In a statement, Hamas expressed support for activists, calling the intercept of Israel’s fleet “criminal acts” and calling for public protests to condemn Israel.

The boat was about 70 nautical miles from Gaza when it was intercepted within a zone where Israel was policed to stop approaching. Organizers said communications, including the use of live camera feeds from several boats, had been scrambled.

Israel launched an attack on Gaza after Israel’s Hamas-led attack on Israel. In Israel, around 1,200 people were killed and 251 were taken hostages to Gaza. Palestinian health officials say the attack killed more than 66,000 people in Gaza.

The Pentagon tells Congress that it is in “armed conflict” with the drug cartel

0

The US military has “remained stance” to launch further strikes at a drug cartel that has already killed 17 people, a Pentagon notification said.

play

President Donald Trump has determined that the US is in a “non-international armed conflict” with drug cartels, according to a notice sent by the Pentagon to some members of Congress this week.

The final fatal strike on the boat that killed three people on September 15 was “limited in scope, but the US military remains stance to carry out military operations where necessary to prevent further death or injury to American citizens by eliminating the threat posed by these designated terrorist groups,” the text in the notification obtained by the United States said.

The Trump administration designated several drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations in February. In recent months, the military has integrated a large amount of naval firepower in the Caribbean, including four naval missile guided destroyers and amphibious attack ships.

The drug cartels “now cross the border and are carrying ongoing attacks throughout the Western Hemisphere,” so Trump has determined they are “non-state armed groups” and said “their actions constitute an armed attack on the United States.”

The military launched its first deadly strike on a boat off the coast of Venezuela on September 2, killing 11 people on September 2.

The notice said Trump had directed the military to cast boats “in accordance with armed conflict laws.” Human rights advocates and former military lawyers accused the strike of being illegal and unconstitutional, saying they amounted to extrajudicial killings. Neither the White House nor the Pentagon have released evidence that the boats they attacked and the people killed were either human trafficking drugs or were affiliated with the cartel.

Trump has not announced new approvals to use military force to clear military operations in Congress, but bills granting him the authority to do so are circulating in Congress, The New York Times reported in September.

The Times previously reported that Trump had signed a secret order in July allowing the military to use deadly forces against the cartel. The administration has not made the order public either.

The strike also gave speculation that the Trump administration may be preparing to launch a military operation on Venezuelan territory. Drug trafficking experts say Trump and his officials have urged action to stop the flow of fentanyl, but the Venezuelan cartel accounts for a small portion of fentanyl found in the US, which comes primarily from Mexico.

Right-handed Jack Flaherty is not a man who doesn’t know how to pitch the spotlight with the brightest. Flaherty appeared in five games during the Dodgers World Series run last year. Flaherty had a disappointing 2025 regular season, reaching 8-15 with an ERA 4.64. He finished strong and posted a 3.86 ERA in four starts in September. This was his best month outside of April. Flaherty faced the Guardians three times during the season, making it 0-3 with an ERA 3.94 and 18 strikeouts in 16 innings. His final two regular season start came against Cleveland. Cleveland scored one run in five innings on September 17th and tagged him with a run he won three times in 4.1 innings on September 24th.

Right-handed Slade Sekconi, who was bought for Josh Naylor during the offseason, was a bit of a steady force for Cleveland this year. Cecconi gave the Guardians 23 a start, 7-7 with an ERA 4.30 during the season. Cecconi allowed less than two runs in four of the last five starts, compiling a 2.19 ERA during that stretch.

Cleveland was 88-74 and won their second straight division title, rallying from a 15.5-game deficit in early July. The Guardians went 48-26 after losing to the Tigers on July 6th. This included winning 18 of the last 22 games, winning five of the six from the Tigers in the final two weeks.

The US company offers paid “term leave.” What is it?

While most workers are offered family and medical or sick leave, rare employment benefits are attracting new attention.

Her first 100K is a personal finance and career platform for Generation Z and Millennial women, joining a short list of other US companies whose employees have paid menstrual leave to those experiencing periods of symptoms apart from paid or sick leave.

Tori Dunlap, the founder of her first $100,000, said the decision came from her own experience as a woman who is forced to overcome the pain of the period.

“Menterology is a normal biological process,” she said. “Creating menstrual policies felt like common sense, reflecting our belief that it means acknowledging the real experience of the team, rather than pretending that inclusivity does not exist.”

According to Yale Medicine, more than half of women experience some degree of deisormua, a medical term for painful periods. However, about 15% of women find the pain so severe that they stay home from school or work.

A 2019 survey published in the peer-reviewed journal BMJ Open’s discovery period symptoms were associated with losing nine days of productivity per year at work and school.

According to Yale Medicine, pain can be due to the duration itself or due to reproductive disorders such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, pelvic inflammatory diseases, or urinary disorders. In addition to menstrual cramps, patients may also vomit during periods of headaches, dizziness, lower back pain, nausea, and pain.

So how does the paid period work? Dunlap said it was “deliberately easy.” Employees can take paid leave when they are experiencing symptoms over the period. “No explanations or documents are required.”

If the company had not adopted paid menstrual leave, employees could have taken time to sick or paid. However, Dunlap said he believes team members should not choose to “take care of their own body and save time on vacation due to other needs.”

Her first $100K is not the first North American company to carve out menstrual leave as an independent profit.

The Canadian company’s divas, the company behind Menstrual Cup Divacup, offers paid menstrual and menopause leave. According to a social media post, the global software company Nuvento also has a 12-day period vacation policy that allows women to take a day off in pain during periods.

Terms of leave are also legally protected in other countries. In 2023, Spain passed Europe’s first menstrual leave law. Menstrual leave is common in countries such as Japan and Korea, but sometimes it is unpaid.

Dunlap said the feedback from her team was “really positive.” Their small remote team is now made up of all women, but she said that people who are not dependent will get the same benefits as paid leave and sick time if they participate.

Dunlap hopes that her company’s policies serve as an example of a large company where “humanitarian policies and successful businesses are not in conflict.”

“Mental leave is just a step, but the bigger lesson is that when you trust your team and prioritize their happiness, everyone benefits,” she said.

Protesting the deployment of guards to ride naked bikes in Portland, Oregon

0

In Portland, activists are planning a unique show of dissent. It’s about riding a naked bike to protest Trump’s National Guard deployment.

play

In Portland, it’s not strange to see a pack of naked bikes covered in bright body paint running around town. But this year, the familiar sights have stunned the more political tone.

Organizers of the Group World Naked Bike Ride Portland have announced plans for a “emergency” event to protest the Trump administration’s deployment of federal National Guard forces to liberal bases.

“In response to the militarization of our cities, we’re riding an emergency world naked bike,” the group’s Instagram post said. “The plan is working on.”

The organizers did not immediately respond to requests for comment. No dates for the protest have been provided yet.

Portland has been holding its annual naked bike ride since 2004 as a statement on cyclists’ rights, physical positivity and protest against fossil fuel companies. The event draws thousands of cyclists into the streets, where they bare everything. In Oregon, public nudity is legally considered a form of protest.

The planned anti-Trump cycling protest is not affiliated with Portland World Naked Bike Ride, a group that hosts the annual events that mostly attended. A derivative of the name World Naked Bike Ride, Portland, has recently held protests, including a nude ride against Zenith Energy, a fuel storage company facing surveillance at a terminal along the Willamette River in northwestern Portland.

The nude cycling culture is entrenched in cities across the United States, and the rides themselves often address local issues. Last month, a nude bike ride was held in Houston, advocating for better cycling infrastructure and protesting the removal of protected bike lanes.

Many vehicles, including the National Guard protesting in Portland, have nothing to do with the world-nude bike rides of organizations that have held rides in New Zealand, Mexico, Argentina, Japan, Canada and more than a dozen other countries.

The mobile demonstration comes after President Donald Trump announced the deployment of National Guard troops in Portland to protect immigration and customs enforcement facilities, which were the scene of this year’s protests that occasionally exploded in clashes between protesters and law enforcement.

Trump has described his social media platform city as a “endless disaster,” but states and local leaders have denounced the deployment, saying it’s not necessary.

“There are no riots, no threat to national security, and no need for troops in our major cities,” said Democrat Gov. Tina Kotek. Oregon and Portland officials filed a federal lawsuit against the administration this week, calling the development “patentably illegal.”

Undocumented farm workers deserve to improve US immigration laws

0

The difficult truth is that not all farm employees in the United States have legal approval. Efficient and easily navigated guest worker programs support border security and enhance food systems.

play

Ice attacks, detention, deportation. Immigration headlines are flooding the screen. There could be enforcement happening in your town, or it could be hundreds of miles away. But the impact on your family is felt every time you go to the grocery store.

Fresh apples, crisp vegetables, milk, meat. All items you expect to be able to take home are at risk due to the growing labor crisis. Crisis farmers are forced to deal with it by hiring workers from outside the United States.

Every August, I stand in the orchard of a family farm in Henderson County, North Carolina, looking at over 6 million pounds of apples on a tree. I am consumed with concern and expectations. Without enough workers to harvest on time, those apples and months of hard work can be ruined correctly in these orchards.

I am a third generation farmer. Labor costs are shaking the farms that America depends on.

I am a third generation farmer. Along with apples, my family grows corn, hay and beef. I rely on both year-round and seasonal employees to keep food moving from our farms to schools, restaurants and grocery stores.

It is almost impossible to find enough people to fill positions on a farm in the US. I’m trying to hire domestic employees from the community, but the reality is that farm work is physically demanding and requires a long time. Americans clearly don’t want farm work or are looking for jobs that last longer than the season. When they apply in rare cases, few people decide it is suitable for them, and most quickly resign.

I resorted to the Federal H-2A program to fill the farm’s empty spaces. This seasonal agricultural workforce program allows me to legally hire employees from other countries to take my crops to your home. Many workers feel that life on the farm is rewarding and will be returned year by year.

Unfortunately, the system is expensive, bureaucratic and often lagging behind. The cost per employee will be around $29 per hour to cover fees, transportation, housing and federal mandatory wages. These increases in costs are far greater than what wholesale buyers pay us to apples.

In many cases, labor costs are a breaking point for farm families, forcing them to sell their land or abandon farming altogether. All the farms lost are more than just closed business. It was food production gone, the land was forever changed and the community was weakened.

The interests will not be high. Fruits and vegetables are ripe in a natural timeline, not ours. In Apple’s production, there are short windows to harvest before quality deteriorates. Without sufficient workers, crops will rot in the fields. This means checkouts for all American families will result in fewer healthy options in the store and higher prices.

Opinion warning: Get columns from your favorite columnists and expert analysis of top issues delivered directly to your device via the USA Today app. Do you have an app? Download it for free from the App Store.

In recent years, the H-2A program has expanded significantly. According to the Department of Agriculture, the number of certified positions increased eight times between 2005 (over 48,000) and 2024 (384,900), indicating how desperate farmers of employees are.

All farmers using the H-2A program must advertise their jobs locally and are only approved for temporary foreign workers if Americans do not qualify for jobs.

Americans need food security along with border security

The difficult truth is that not all farm employees in America have legal approval. It is estimated that more than 40% of farm workers lack appropriate documentation.

So let’s fix it. Efficient and easily navigated guest worker programs support border security and enhance food systems. For workers who are not already documented here, allowing them to undergo the same review process as H‑2A visa applicants and granting a work visa will provide accountability, stability and security.

Supports safe boundaries. We also know that food security is national security. America cannot gamble with food supplies. Reforms that reflect reality are needed. Annual visa program access for farms such as dairy, poultry, livestock, and other farms that require 365 days of work per year. A fair wage ceremony that reflects the economic situation and adequately compensates employees while keeping the farm viable. A streamlined process that reduces delays and bureaucracy for both workers and farmers.

This is not just farmers. It’s about every family that expects affordable healthy food. If we don’t act, America will rely more on imports, exposing us to confusion and rising prices.

This issue is often too complicated to fix. I disagree. You can have both a safe border and a legal and reliable workforce. It requires a simple approach, removes unrealistic hurdles and stands with farmers who have placed food on all American tables and families who rely on a stable food supply.

Linda Pryor is a third generation farmer from Henderson County, North Carolina. She grows apples, corn, hay and grows beef. She is a member of the North Carolina Farm Bureau.

The WIC program could run out of funds due to the closure, officials say

0

These services are not luxury. Georgia Machel, president and CEO of the National WIC Association, talks about WIC programming.

play

Special supplementary nutrition programs for women, infants and children, commonly known as WIC, will be affected by ongoing government closures, if extended, officials said.

The federal government entered the country on Thursday, October 2nd, on the second day of its closure. President Donald Trump, his Republican allies and Democrats opposed to him, have shown no indications of agreeing to the federal budget laws. Funding to support additional healthcare programming remains a key point in splitting.

In addition to non-essential agencies closing doors, federal workers fear looming layoffs, with White House officials claiming it is “immediate” in “a day or two.”

Here’s how government closures are affecting WIC:

What is WIC?

WIC is a federal nutrition program that provides food, education and counseling to nearly 7 million at-risk pregnancies, postpartum and breastfeeding individuals, as well as infants and children up to five years of age.

Will WIC be closed during government closure?

If the shutdown continues, WIC may have shortfalls in funds within a week or two, said Georgia Machel, chairman and CEO of the WIC Association, in a news release on September 30.

Until then, WIC will continue to operate under available funds, according to the USDA’s Contingency Plan.

WICs can “recover and reassign unused grants from the previous fiscal year” for state-level activities, but federal government activities will cease if funds become unavailable, the plan says. According to the Food Research Center, states can take over up to 3% of their funds for fiscal year 2025 if they are unused. The remaining funds will be returned to USDA for reassignment in 2026.

“WIC provides access to important nutritious foods, breastfeeding support, infant prescriptions, and health screening and referral,” Machell said in a news release. “These services are not luxury, they are lifelines needed. Even temporary disruptions to the program can have long-term negative consequences for the health and development of our country’s families.”

How will shutdown affect my state’s WIC?

As of October 2nd, state-level WIC programs are not affected by shutdowns. To better understand the impact of government closures on WICs in certain states, visit the state’s WIC website for more information.

What is a government closure?

Every fiscal year, Congress approves funds to federal agencies. According to the U.S. Personnel Management, if Congress does not pass the funding law or temporary suspension known as a continuing resolution, federal agencies will have to close or suspend normal spending.

When did the government close?

The current government funds expired late at night on Tuesday, September 30th. The government closure began on Wednesday, October 1st at 12:01am ET.

Why did the government shut down?

One of the main reasons Congressional leaders have not agreed to the Budget Compilation Act is that health policy changes have been proposed. Senate Democrats have blocked Republican funding proposals to prevent cuts in Medicaid, which is part of Trump’s major tax laws and health insurance subsidies expiration.

How long will the shutdown last?

The federal government has shut down 21 times since 1977. Based on previous cases, the average shutdown lasts around 8 days.

The longest government closure in the last 50 years was under the first Trump administration from December 2018 to January 2019. It lasted for 35 days.

Are pets just for the rich now?

0

good morning! It’s Daniel de Vis with your daily money.

Several recent reports point to plain conclusions. Maybe pets are just for the rich.

One in five pet owners carry at least $2,000 pet debt, according to a June survey of 1,000 American pet owners commissioned by MetLife Pet Insurance. One in seven people experience “pet poverty” and struggle to meet their basic needs while caring for their pets.

And wait until you see the tab for lifelong pet care.

Now: Return to shutdown. The federal government was closed on the second day, with Democrats and Republicans supporting healthcare funds.

Shutdowns can delay the release of critical government data. That’s why it’s important.

Speaking of healthcare, long-term shutdowns can ultimately cause problems for Medicare and Medicaid recipients.

One person was injured when two Delta regional jets collided while taking a taxi at LaGuardia Airport in New York on October 1, officials said.

The Port Authority in New York said in a statement to USA Today that outbound and inbound flights are operated by Delta subsidiaries and collided at 9:58pm local time.

One of the flights suffered a life-threatening injury and was taken to a local hospital as a precautionary measure,” the agency said.

Delta Air Lines said in a statement to USA Today that the aircraft is involved in “slow-speed collisions.”

“Delta will work with all relevant authorities to ensure that it happened when the safety of our customers and people comes before everyone else. We apologise to our customers for the experience,” the statement said.

No one was injured during the collision, Delta says.

Delta said no passengers were injured during the collision. The flight attendant reported minor injuries.

The flight attendant suffered knee and head injuries, according to the air traffic control voice from the incident.

Based on preliminary information, according to Delta, the wings of the departure jet collided with the fuselage of the arrival jet. The departing flight headed to Roanoke, Virginia, and the arrival flight came from Charlotte, North Carolina.

There were a total of 85 passengers on the two jets. They were exhausted on the taxiway and were sent back to the airport terminal by bus.

Delta said passengers were rebooked for the flight on October 2nd.

Laguardia Airport operations are not affected after a plane crashes into a taxiway

The Port Authority said the rest of the airport in Queens, New York, will not be affected.

$2.1 trillion sitting in a forgotten 401(k) account. Is it yours?

0

play

More than $2 trillion sitting in a Forgotten or Left Bind 401(k) retirement savings account with an average balance of $66,691, according to a new report.

These 31.9 million accounts represent almost a quarter of the assets held in the 401(k) plan.

The September 30th report comes from Capitaize, a retirement savings platform, in collaboration with Boston College’s Retirement Research Center.

The paper, entitled “The True Cost of Forgotten 401(k) Accounts,” draws attention to the installation tab for idol retirement funds and the complexity of transferring those dollars to a new retirement plan in job changes.

The report estimates that the forgotten 401(k) holds assets of approximately $2.1 trillion, up from about $1.7 trillion in 2023.

“I think it’s a big hindrance to have enough money to retire,” said Gaurav Sharma, CEO of Capitaize.

According to the report, 72% of private sector U.S. workers have access to 401(k)-style retirement plans as of 2024, with 53% of workers participating. These numbers are on the rise and represent a measure of success in national retirement savings efforts.

When you quit your job, you have several options on your 401(k). You can perform a rollover to transfer funds to another 401(k) or individual retirement account. Or it could potentially take away your future retirement savings.

Or, you can’t do anything. The new report focuses on the group. A departure worker who has had a 401(k) account, has forgotten it or has chosen to deal with it later.

“There are employees who have forgotten or never knew, or are not paying attention to the fact that they have money in their 401(k),” said Anqi Chen, Associate Director of Savings and Family Finance at the Retirement Research Center.

Forgetting the forgotten 401(k)s, bad things can happen

Something bad can happen with the left hind 401(k) account, Chen said. Depending on your balance, your employer may choose to cash it out for you. They can perform a “forced rollover.” This is a move that could leave you suffering with cash-equivalent accounts at low interest rates, and miss out on higher returns.

Some workers will be in collections of old 401(k) accounts. In that scenario, it is difficult to manage your accounts and track how you allocate your money. Idol accounts may incur unfamiliar charges.

The long-standing issues with forgotten 401(k)s retirement savings, the author of the report states:

Previous research by Capitalize found “outdated and painful” rollovers. Only 22% of savers could roll their accounts without help, while 42% said the process took at least two months and it took them to complete.

According to Sharma, Chen, and others, the ability to move a 401(k) from one employer to the next is called “portability,” and its lack of this disrupted workers from maintaining retirement savings.

“We know that this technology exists,” Sharma said. “We need people to adopt it.”

Recent initiatives aim to solve portability issues. In 2022, a consortium of private retirement plan providers announced a collaboration to improve the portability of small retirement accounts.

When someone leaves the job, the provider’s network will ensure that the retirement funds will be transferred seamlessly to the new employer’s retirement plan. The Auto Import Program applies to accounts under $7,000.

Below are some tips for finding a lost or forgotten 401(k) account.

Find the Forgotten 401(k): Low-hanging fruit

First, take a look at the national register of unclaimed retirement benefits. Enter your Social Security number, perform a quick search and see if your idol account will return.

Next, I proceeded to my lost retirement savings and found my database. This is a new site launched by the Ministry of Labor to help workers find unclaimed benefits.

The lost site is “still trying to reach scale with many providers,” according to Rita Assaf, vice president of retirement savings at Fidelity. But it is another convenient one-stop destination for finding retirement funds in your name.

Third, visit missing money, a clearing house of unclaimed property held by US states and Canada. Another one-stop site, Moking Money, can direct users to any type of unclaimed property, including retirement accounts.

Finding the Forgotten 401(k): It takes some effort

The above steps should provide a good sense of potentially unclaimed retirement funds in your name. The next move may take a little longer.

Search your employment records. Find old retirement plan statements in electronic or paper form. Alternatively, look for old pay stubs and W-2 forms to find contributions to your retirement plan.

Please contact your old employer. Start with the HR department. Some people may know whether you joined the 401(k) or at least which company managed the plans.

If you think you know which plan administrators have your account, contact the company directly.

“There aren’t many 401(k) plan managers,” said Kate Ashford, investment specialist at Nerdwallet. “You can take the afternoon and call them all.”

Please consult with the 401(k) department. Representatives usually ask for a Social Security number or other identification information. This will help administrators find old retirement accounts in your name.

Find the Forgotten 401(k): Next Step

Several other sites help consumers search for clues about abandoned retirement accounts.

The Ministry of Labor’s abandoned planning database helps former workers find plans that have been terminated.

Using the same institution, users can search the Form 5500 database. Form 5500 is submitted annually to a 401(k) plan to help users identify and contact both their previous employer and plan manager. However, the record only goes back to 2010.

Don’t want to search for your own 401(k) funds? At least two private companies, Capitainize and Beagle, run a concierge service that allows you to do it for you.

The federal government closed much of its activities on Wednesday, October 1 after Congress denied reaching a contract with federal fund allocations to the government.

The move was triggered by expiring health benefits, sparking what could have been a long, fierce conflict, and ultimately struck hundreds of thousands of federal workers, but some workers will continue to receive pay.

The shutdown continued on Thursday, October 2nd.

The closure marked the 15th of its kind since 1981 when government leaders halted scientific research, economic surveillance, environmental cleanup efforts and a wide range of other activities.

Nearly 800,000 federal employees went unpaid for 35 days between the longest US government closures in 2018 and 2019, USA Today previously reported.

Here’s what you need to know when the shutdown enters day 2:

Is the government still closed?

yes. As of Thursday, October 2nd, the federal government is still closed.

There’s no immediate aim as Congressional Democrats demand changes to healthcare policies that Trump and Republicans refuse to entertain.

What happens during the government shutdown?

During government shutdowns, all federal agencies and services considered non-essential relationships must stop affecting thousands of federal employees and millions of Americans.

Critical services like military enforcement and law enforcement still work.

How to follow the latest information on government closures

USA Today follows daily live blog shutdowns. Find stories about the effects of shutdowns and everything you need to know below.

How will the government shutdown end?

The government closure begins when Congress cannot agree on how to allocate funds to operate before a pre-established deadline (in this case, September 30, 2025).

This means that the closure will end and the government will reopen completely once Congress passes funding spending. President Donald Trump must sign the budget bill to the law.

According to the Human Resources Administration, lawmakers could also pass a temporary spending bill known as a continuous solution (or CR for short).

Why some cities charge for use of vehicles

0

play

Have you ever had to pay your local government for the wheels of your car?

Local governments use wheel taxes to generate more revenue and fund public infrastructure projects.

Not all governments place wheel taxes, but they can be imposed by governments that are based on factors such as vehicle weight and wheel counts. Applies to you during your annual registration or renewal.

According to the tax law, wheel taxes are intended to reclaim costs for maintenance and improvement for people using public services such as roads.

“User fees are fees levied by the government for the main purpose of providing a service and covering the costs of raising funds directly from those who benefit from the specific public goods or services offered,” the Tax Foundation website states.

What does wheel tax look like nationwide?

A new wheel tax is expected to come into effect on January 1, 2026 in Evansville, Indiana. This will cost $30 for commercial vehicles, $20 for passenger vehicles and $10 for motorcycles.

The Evansville wheel tax is estimated to generate $2.2 million in funding for road and street improvements, city officials said.

If a municipality has a wheel tax, that doesn’t mean residents are exempt from the county version. Evansville, for example, is located in Vanderburg County, with a $20 wheel tax on motorcycles, passenger cars and heavy trucks.

In Tennessee, Lake County imposes the highest passenger wheel tax of $100 a year, while Pickett County is the lowest taxable for just $10. Except for many counties across the state, according to the University of Tennessee Technical Assistance Services. Nashville and Davidson County add a $55 fee to the passenger car registration fee each year.

Chicago, known as vehicle sticker fees, charge a typical passenger car with a $100.17 charge and a $159.12 charge for a large passenger car.

In Lincoln, Nebraska and Madison, Wisconsin, wheel taxes cost $74 and $40 respectively.

Although it’s not called the wheel tax, Seattle is making a profit on $50 Seattle transport and leveraging district vehicle licensing fees to improve transportation infrastructure.
