What’s the latest on the government shutdown? Here’s what we know.

0

play

  • President Trump said he would meet with Democratic leaders only after the federal government reopens.
  • The government shutdown that began on October 1st has furloughed more than 750,000 federal employees.
  • Democrats want to pass a spending bill that would make the Affordable Care Act’s tax cuts permanent.
  • Republicans and the president want to address the ACA tax cuts separately from the budget impasse.
  • Essential services such as the U.S. Postal Service and Social Security payments will continue, but some food assistance programs could quickly run out of funding.

President Donald Trump told Democratic leaders on Tuesday (October 21) that he does not plan to meet with them until the 22-day federal government shutdown ends.

President Trump told reporters that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries had requested to meet with them “any time, any place.” “I would like to meet with both of them, but I have one small caveat: I will only meet if they will open up the country to me.”

The closure was the second longest in U.S. history, tied with the 1995-1996 closure. If the shutdown continues until Wednesday, October 23, it will be the second-longest shutdown since the 35-day shutdown that began on December 22, 2018, and ended on January 25, 2019, during the Trump administration’s first term.

Is the federal government still closed?

Yes, the federal government has remained largely shut down since shortly after midnight on October 1st.

More than 750,000 federal employees have been furloughed and ordered not to report to work. Employees deemed essential to public safety, such as military personnel, law enforcement officers, Border Patrol agents, and air traffic controllers, are required to work regardless.

President Trump signed an executive order directing the Pentagon to keep active-duty military members paid despite the government shutdown, but this does not apply to all federal employees who are required to work. There is also no guarantee that additional funds will be available to pay the military until the government reopens.

What do Democrats and Republicans want from reopening the government?

Democrats want to secure tax breaks for the 24 million Americans who get insurance through the Affordable Care Act (known as Obamacare) and refuse to support government spending bills that do not address the issue.

Senate Democrats want to make the tax cuts, which are set to expire at the end of the year, permanent and provide reassurance to prevent the Trump administration from temporarily withholding funds.

Republicans and the president have said they are open to considering fixes to the expiring ACA tax cuts, but want the issue to be addressed separately from the ongoing budget impasse.

What about Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid?

According to the Social Security Administration’s closure plan, the agency will continue issuing retirement and disability benefits, but will furlough 12% of its employees and suspend marketing campaigns.

Payments will continue under the Medicare and Medicaid health care programs as well.

Will American mail be delivered?

The USPS said in a statement that it is open because the U.S. Postal Service is not dependent on Congress for funding.

What about the airport?

More than 13,000 air traffic controllers and about 50,000 Transportation Security Administration employees will be required to report to work during the shutdown, and neither group is expected to be paid until Congress approves a budget.

The Federal Aviation Administration acknowledged on Tuesday, Oct. 21, that air traffic control staffing issues are causing flight delays at Houston and Newark airports.

According to Reuters, more than 163 flights at Houston Bush Airport were delayed by 7 p.m. ET, or about 12% of flights, according to flight tracking service FlightAware. More than 170 flights, or about 15%, were delayed at Newark Liberty International in New Jersey.

Will food assistance continue under SNAP and WIC?

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the nation’s largest food assistance program, and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, known as WIC, will continue to operate as funds allow.

But the federal agency warned that if the shutdown doesn’t end, there won’t be enough money to pay all of November’s SNAP benefits.

State health officials across the country, including North Carolina, Wisconsin and Minnesota, have begun warning recipients that they may run out of money for November.

What does the military shutdown mean for the military?

President Trump signed an executive order directing the Department of Defense to ensure active duty military personnel are paid despite the federal government shutdown.

As of Oct. 15, 1.3 million active-duty military personnel received paychecks, but about 55% of the Pentagon’s 740,000 civilian workforce has been furloughed, including employees in training, acquisition, and administrative support. Civilians in cybersecurity, medical care, weapons systems maintenance, intelligence and logistics are still working and are not included in President Trump’s order to pay active duty employees.

The National Guard, which President Trump deployed to American cities, must also remain active.

What about Homeland Security, Immigration and Border Patrol agents?

Only 5% of the Department of Homeland Security’s 271,000 employees are furloughed, including those involved in research, planning, training and auditing.

The Department of Homeland Security confirmed on October 16 that more than 70,000 sworn law enforcement officers across the department, including officers in Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Secret Service, the Transportation Security Administration, and other critical mission areas, will be paid for all hours worked during the shutdown.

Giants’ Russell Wilson applauds Sean Payton’s ‘undignified’ comments

New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson took to social media to slam Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton’s “undignified” comments.

Payton told reporters after the Broncos’ 33-32 come-from-behind victory over the Giants that he expected Wilson to be a permanent starter against Jackson-Dart until the team plays the Broncos.

“They found a little bit of a spark with that quarterback,” Payton said, referring to Dart. “I was talking to (Giants owner) John Mara a little while ago and I said I’m hopeful that changes will happen long after the game is over.”

Naturally, Wilson took Peyton’s comments as a disdain. Because of this, the 36-year-old quarterback fired back at his former coach, referencing Payton’s involvement in the New Orleans Saints’ infamous “Bountygate” scandal.

“Classless…but not surprised,” Wilson wrote on social media. “I had no idea that more than 15 years later, he was still a bounty hunter through the media.”

Wilson and Payton worked together for one season in Denver in 2023. Wilson started 15 games for the team, completing 66.4 percent of his passes for 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns, and eight interceptions, leading the Broncos to a 7-8 record.

However, Payton was not happy with the direction of Denver’s offense and opted to bench Wilson for the final two games of the 2023 season. This also came at a time when the Broncos were looking for a way to part ways with their veteran quarterback while trying to avoid triggering contractual injury guarantees, further complicating the rift between the two.

Clearly, even after nearly two years of partnership, tensions remain between the two men.

Federal agents and Pentagon armored vehicles attack New York’s Canal Street stores

Mayor Eric Adams said New York City is not cooperating with federal law enforcement regarding civil deportations in accordance with local law.

play

NEW YORK – Federal agents raided several busy streets in Lower Manhattan on October 21 in an immigration crackdown targeting street vendors.

Video from local news outlets showed masked agents walking along Canal Street, a popular tourist hub in the Chinatown district, handcuffing people in the afternoon. It is unclear how many people were detained.

Protests broke out in the area. Traffic was stopped and bystanders recorded the incident on their cellphones as officers detained people.

Video obtained by USA TODAY showed a Department of Homeland Security armored vehicle driving down Lafayette Street from the direction of the canal toward Manhattan’s federal building, which houses immigration court and Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facilities. Protesters can be seen shouting at agents as they march past people to make way for cars.

DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin said Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other federal agencies conducted a “targeted intelligence-driven operation on Canal Street” that “focused on criminal activity related to the sale of counterfeit goods.”

Canal Street is a common area where people sell clothing, accessories, and food on the crowded sidewalks.

She said authorities also include the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, IRS Criminal Investigation and Customs and Border Protection.

“During this law enforcement operation, a mob yelling obscenities became violent and disrupted law enforcement operations, including blocking vehicles and assaulting law enforcement,” McLaughlin said in a statement.

He said at least one person had been arrested on suspicion of assaulting a federal officer, adding that details about those arrested would be available soon.

Mourad Awaudeh, president and CEO of the New York Immigration Coalition, said he initially witnessed officers detaining African peddlers on the street and placing them in unmarked vehicles. Awadeh said the agents refused to answer questions, including who was in custody and whether they had a judicial warrant for their arrest.

Dozens of operatives then swarmed the area with military vehicles as supporters and bystanders began to gather, police said. Agents used batons and maces against demonstrators.

“If they are going to warn us, New Yorkers are ready to fight for each other and fight peacefully,” Awadeh told USA TODAY by phone from the scene. “We’re going to fight for democracy because that’s where this issue is going.”

The New York City Police Department said on social media that it was not involved in the federal operation. Mayor Eric Adams said New York City does not cooperate with federal law enforcement regarding civil deportations, pursuant to a local law commonly referred to as sanctuary policy.

“Our administration has made it clear that undocumented New Yorkers seeking to pursue the American Dream should not be targeted by law enforcement, and instead should focus resources on violent criminals,” he said on social media.

In January, ICE conducted a highly publicized raid in New York City. Investigators also detained people attending immigration court hearings and ICE check-ins in lower Manhattan.

Democratic Gov. Cathy Hochul said on social media that President Donald Trump claims he is “targeting the worst of the worst.” Instead, she said, agents used “batons and pepper spray against street vendors and onlookers on Canal Street.”

The Thunder played in reverse for most of the game, with the Rockets leading in the first three quarters.

House Republicans refer President Obama’s CIA Director John Brennan for prosecution

0

The committee chairman, Rep. Jim Jordan, said Brennan lied to Congress about the investigation into whether Russia interfered in the 2016 election to aid President Trump.

play

WASHINGTON – Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee on Thursday referred former CIA Director John Brennan to the Department of Justice for criminal prosecution, alleging that he made false statements during his 2023 congressional testimony regarding the Trump-Russia investigation.

“John Brennan lied to Congress,” the committee chairman, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), said in a post on X, referring to the appointee of President Barack Obama. “Today, we referred him to the Department of Justice for criminal prosecution.”

“Steel Documents”

Specifically, Jordan said in a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi that newly declassified evidence from the Trump-appointed Office of the Director of National Intelligence supports Brennan’s false testimony on May 11, 2023, when he said the CIA had no involvement in the (Steele) dossier.

The Steele dossier is a series of largely discredited intelligence reports written by former British spy Christopher Steele for a private research firm that allege ties between President Trump’s 2016 campaign and the Kremlin.

“As newly declassified documents demonstrate, Brennan was eager to include information from the Steele dossier in the (intelligence assessment), a fact that Brennan himself has documented in writing,” Jordan wrote, referring to the CIA’s classified intelligence assessment of Russian election interference.

Mr. Brennan was not immediately available for comment, but he has denied any wrongdoing, particularly in his role leading the massive multi-agency investigation into whether Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election to help Mr. Trump defeat Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

The Justice Department did not respond to requests for comment.

Steele’s dossier was shared with the FBI late in the 2016 presidential campaign, and a summary of its claims was eventually added as an appendix to the U.S. intelligence community’s assessment of Russian interference.

The intelligence report was ordered by President Obama after Trump was elected in November 2016, following widespread indications of interference in the Kremlin. But since then, especially since Trump was elected to a second term in 2024, the report has fueled accusations by Trump and his allies that it was a coordinated effort to weaponize U.S. law enforcement and intelligence agencies against him, a charge they vehemently deny.

A bipartisan 2020 report by the Senate Intelligence Committee found evidence that Russia maneuvered to influence the election but was not successful in manipulating votes.

The referral is the latest move by a Republican-led committee targeting Democrats that Republicans say the government is illegally weaponizing to go after Trump.

Mr. Brennan is one of a number of appointees by President Obama, including the heads of the intelligence agencies, and Mr. Trump himself and the law enforcement and intelligence leaders he has appointed have vowed to investigate and prosecute baseless misconduct related to the Russia investigation.

a ‘flimsy, sloppy, contradictory‘ introduction

The top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland, criticized his Republican colleagues for conducting the advisory.

“Instead of working to end the government shutdown, reduce health care costs, and meet the needs of the nation, Republican committees are digging up old testimony from Trump’s opponents in hopes of finding something — anything — that can please their boss, Donald Trump, even though the statute of limitations has already expired,” Raskin said in a statement to USA TODAY. “The claims that he lied are flimsy, sloppy and contradictory.”

The criminal prosecution by Trump’s Republican allies in Congress comes about three months after the president called for the prosecution of Brennan and former FBI Director James Comey for their roles in the Russia investigation.

On September 25, a federal grand jury in Alexandria, Virginia, indicted Comey on charges of lying to Congress and disrupting Congressional proceedings during testimony before a Senate committee in 2020.

Mr. Comey pleaded not guilty and on October 20, cited Mr. Trump’s public statement calling for prosecution, and formally asked for the charges to be dropped on the basis of “vindictive prosecution.”

Comey’s lawyers argued that “President Trump ordered the Department of Justice (DOJ) to prosecute Mr. Comey out of personal malice and because Mr. Comey has frequently criticized the President for his actions while in office.”

On July 8, 2025, Fox News reported, citing Justice Department sources, that the department was investigating both Comey and Brennan (as Comey’s lawyers cited in their October 20 motion for removal).

Brennan, who served as CIA director from 2013 to 2017, has become a vocal critic of President Trump since leaving office, as has Comey.

On July 10, following a Fox News report, Comey’s lawyers said Trump had called Comey and Brennan “really crooked people” and “really bad people and dishonest people,” adding, “They’re probably going to have to pay for that…whatever happens happens.”

Ignoring over-the-air updates may void your GM warranty. What you need to know

0

Skipping that update may be more dangerous than you think.

play

  • General Motors, like several prominent car brands, uses over-the-air updates to repair and upgrade vehicles.
  • Ignoring these updates may result in operational and warranty issues.

Over-the-air (OTA) updates can be both a blessing and a curse for modern drivers.

OTA updates allow automakers to issue software upgrades and fixes for vehicles without physically servicing the vehicle through a service center. Although these updates are useful for drivers, failure to download and install updates can have serious consequences.

General Motors OTA updates: install or be affected by them?

Cars are more advanced than ever, from amazing driver assistance and safety features to software most drivers have never experienced before. OTA updates are one of the newest and biggest trends in automotive software. These updates essentially allow car brands to patch software bugs and upgrade vehicles remotely to nip problems in the bud and improve vehicles without the help of licensed technicians.

So what happens if an over-the-air update is available for your GM vehicle, but you forget (or refuse) to download and install it?According to General Motors development-focused blog GM Authority, it could affect your warranty.

The site says owners must install OTA updates “within 45 days of availability” or risk uncompensated damage. This means that failure to download and install updates can lead to software issues and damage. These damages are not covered by the warranty if the owner did not update the vehicle in a timely manner.

GM owners should note that they will receive a message via their infotainment system if there is an OTA update available for their vehicle. Therefore, we recommend installing General Motors OTA updates as soon as possible. Consider how new vehicles rely on software for critical operational functions. Just like your smartphone, your car will improve if you update it quickly.

Why are auto brands using OTA updates?

While the more technology-centric vehicles on the market can be a plus for drivers, they have unique needs when compared to older vehicles.

Over-the-air update function:

  • Fix software bugs and potential security issues
  • improve vehicle performance
  • Add new features
  • Modification and/or upgrade of existing functionality
  • Update your vehicle to meet regulatory standards

Vehicles that rely heavily on software for operational purposes, such as Tesla vehicles, require OTA updates. These updates improve vehicle safety and also enable modifications and additions to features.

Although the download and installation process may seem tedious to drivers who are not accustomed to OTA updates, the act is much easier than driving to a service location and waiting for service. These updates require an internet connection via Wi-Fi or cellular data.

What car brands use OTA updates?

Over-the-air updates are much more common than you think. In fact, most major automotive brands have introduced OTA updates to protect, improve, and repair their vehicles, completely transforming the modern vehicle service experience.

Car brands using OTA updates

  • audi
  • BMW
  • ford
  • general motors
  • honda
  • hyundai
  • come
  • mercedes benz
  • nissan

If you recently bought a new car, you may be using an OTA update. These updates are likely to become more widespread as major automakers focus on developing software-centric vehicles. So if your car’s infotainment screen asks you to download and install an update, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Paul Ingrassia withdraws after Republican backlash over racist text

Paul Ingrassia said he was withdrawing “unfortunately, we don’t have enough Republican votes at this time.”

play

President Donald Trump’s nominee to head the Office of Special Counsel withdrew from his confirmation hearing after Republican senators said they would not vote for him following reports that he had sent a series of racist and anti-Semitic texts.

Paul Ingrassia said in a social media post that he will be withdrawing from a Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing scheduled for Oct. 23, “unfortunately, there are not enough Republican votes at this time.”

“I am grateful for the overwhelming support I have received throughout this process, and I look forward to continuing to serve President Trump and this administration and make America great again!” Ingrassia added.

In a rare disagreement with Mr. Trump, several Republican senators said in recent days that they would not support Mr. Ingrassia to head the Office of Special Counsel, the ethics arm that protects federal employees from whistleblower retaliation.

Notable non-voters include Sens. Rick Scott of Florida, James Lankford of Oklahoma and Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, according to official statements. On October 20, Senate Minority Leader John Thune of South Dakota also urged the White House not to move forward with Ingrassia’s confirmation.

“He’s not going to pass,” Thune told reporters, according to The Hill.

Who is Paul Ingrassia?

Mr. Ingrassia, 30, is a lawyer and former podcaster who supported Mr. Trump’s efforts to overturn his 2020 election defeat and held positions at the Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security during Trump’s second administration.

Politico reported this week that in a text chat, Ingrassia, a conservative lawyer and commentator, said he had “Nazi tendencies” and thought the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday should be “thrown into the seventh camp of hell.”

Ingrassia also called for the cancellation of other holidays that celebrate black culture in the United States, such as Juneteenth and Black History Month, according to the report.

Ingrassia’s lawyer, Edward Andrew Palczyk, questioned the legitimacy of the reported messages.

Sen. Chuck Schumer, the top Democrat in the Senate, said the messages were “foul and disqualifying.”

Hegseth and his attorney, Steve Feinberg, announced the move in an Oct. 15 internal memo obtained by USA TODAY. (Breaking Defense first reported this memo.)

“Unauthorized engagement with Congress…could undermine department-wide priorities,” they said in the memo. Their goal is to control the Pentagon’s messaging to Congress to “ensure consistency and support for the Department’s priorities.”

The Assistant Secretary of Defense for Legislative Affairs oversees communications with Congress. The memorandum referred to this office using Hegseth’s preferred title of War Department. This Senate-confirmed position is currently being filled on an interim basis.

This crackdown could affect the military’s transparency with the legislature.

According to the memo, “all interactions with Congress and state elected officials” require approval from the national government. This includes visits by members of Congress to U.S. military bases around the world.

The office will also manage the Department’s response to mandatory reports and letters sent regularly by members of Congress asking questions about investigations, policy issues, and constituent case activity.

Some Pentagon employees with legally mandated relationships with Congress are exempt from the ban, including the department’s inspector general, general counsel, and comptroller. The military can still request assistance from lawmakers and enjoy whistleblower protection.

The move is likely aimed at curbing the parochial infighting between the military branches, which fight over congressional funding every year, even though Mr. Hegseth and the White House have formal control over the process.

This spring, Hegseth’s Pentagon moved to end funding for the Navy’s future stealth fighter jets over concerns that the nation’s defense industry lacked the capacity to build the planes alongside higher-priority projects.

But Reuters reports that the Navy successfully lobbied Congress to save the plan, forcing Hegseth to approve the Navy’s new aircraft this month.

Beyond Meat stock soars as Walmart adds products

Yesterday’s gains continued, supported by a boost from Walmart.

play

Beyond Meat Stock (NASDAQ:BYND) Yesterday’s rally in meme stocks and the short squeeze appears to have continued, with shares rising for the second day in a row after the company announced expanded distribution at Walmart, the nation’s largest retailer.

As of 1:42 p.m. ET, the stock was up 78.5% on unusually high volume. It soared 128% yesterday after last week’s move to convert about $1 billion in convertible debt into equity, making its balance sheet more stable.

Beyond Meat gets shot in the arm again.

In a press release this morning, Beyond Meat said Walmart is increasing the availability of some products in more than 2,000 stores nationwide.

Walmart is also one of the first retailers to offer the new Beyond Burger six-pack, and will also add Beyond Chicken Pieces and Beyond Steak Korean BBQ Style.

Yesterday’s upward short squeeze appears to be continuing after the stock gained attention on platforms like Reddit, as this news is unlikely to cause the stock to nearly double today.

By the afternoon, more than 1 billion shares had been traded, with each stock traded multiple times.

What’s next for Beyond Meat?

No one knows how long this rise will continue. Last week’s debt conversion added significant liquidity to the stock, increasing the number of shares outstanding by nearly five times. Many of these debtors likely sold their stocks because they wanted to get rid of them.

The Walmart news is a positive sign for Beyond Meat, but it won’t be enough to save the company. The company is still in the red and its profits are decreasing. If this continues, the company will eventually go bankrupt and its stock will drop to zero.

US Marine Corps investigates live ammunition shooting over California freeway

LOS ANGELES — The U.S. Marine Corps is investigating an incident on a California highway during a ceremony attended by Vice President J.D. Vance when live ammunition was fired and one shell exploded in the air, showering shrapnel on a police vehicle parked nearby, officials said Monday.

The accident occurred Oct. 18 during a demonstration of the military’s M777 howitzer at a Camp Pendleton event celebrating the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Marine Corps. No one was injured in the incident.

But the incident along Interstate 5, about 40 miles north of San Diego, drew harsh criticism from California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who accused the Trump administration of what he called a “reckless” and “grossly unreasonable show of force.”

Tony Coronado, chief of the California Highway Patrol’s border division and a Marine Corps veteran, called the incident an “unusual and alarming situation,” adding, “It is very unusual for live fire and explosive training activities to take place on an active highway.”

The Highway Patrol temporarily closed a 27-mile section of Interstate 5 as a precaution in advance of Exercise M777.

But a CHP cruiser and motorcycle assigned to provide security upon Vance’s arrival and parked on a highway on-ramp near the base during the event were showered with metal fragments when the first of 60 shells the Marines were scheduled to fire over the highway exploded prematurely in flight, according to a California Highway Patrol incident report shared with Reuters.

A 2-inch-wide chunk of debris dented the hood of the patrol car, and smaller debris rained down on and around the motorcycle, but no significant damage was detected, the report said.

“After the round failed, the exercise ended and no additional rounds were fired,” the report said.

Camp Pendleton did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The relatively brief closure of Interstate 5, which connects the Los Angeles area and San Diego County, caused traffic congestion across the region, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The White House said the Marine Corps “reiterated that there were no public safety concerns with today’s exercise.”

A U.S. official familiar with the situation said the investigation was ongoing and Saturday’s canceled howitzer demonstration followed the previous day’s “test” firing of 30 155-millimeter shells, but it was not clear whether the Oct. 17 shells were fired on the highway. The Los Angeles Times reported that some people did.

The official said safety measures were in place on October 18 and a “ceasefire was called” when artillery monitors noticed one shell not hitting where it was supposed to.

Disney+ cancellations double due to Jimmy Kimmel suspension

0

play

New data on Disney+ and Hulu subscription cancellations reveals the business impact of the parent company’s controversial decision to shut down “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Almost a week.

Cancellations for both broadcasters spiked in September, when ABC took over Kimmel’s late-night show, according to a report released Oct. 20 by measurement and analytics company Antenna.

Disney+’s so-called churn rate for the month was 8%, up from 3% to 5% over the past year. The churn rate in August was 4%. Hulu, which has had a churn rate in the 4-6% range over the past year, saw a 10% drop in subscribers compared to 5% in the previous month.

Monthly cancellations are calculated by dividing the number of subscription cancellations by the total number of subscriptions for the previous month.

However, these numbers don’t tell the whole story. Antenna’s report also revealed an increase in the number of new subscribers compared to recent months.

Disney+, which launched in September, added about 2.2 million new subscribers, up 10% from August, while Hulu gained 2.1 million new subscribers, up 6.6% from August. This was the largest increase for both services since March.

USA TODAY has reached out to a Disney representative for comment.

Several factors may have affected cancellation and signup rates.

When Kimmel returned to the air on September 23, Disney+ and Hulu subscribers were notified that prices on most plans would increase the following month. Additionally, the NFL regular season began in September, and Disney-owned ESPN streamed the entire lineup of games, which will likely draw in new viewers.

Calls to boycott Disney grow after ABC suspends Jimmy Kimmel

On September 17, Disney-owned ABC announced “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” The show will be taken off the air “indefinitely” after Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr harshly criticized Kimmel’s Sept. 15 monologue about the MAGA gang’s response to Charlie Kirk’s murder.

In response to Kerr’s comments, Nexstar Media Group announced it would no longer broadcast the program on 32 of its ABC affiliates, and Sinclair Broadcasting Group echoed the move on its own affiliates.

There was an immediate backlash, with social media users calling for a boycott of Disney’s streaming service. Many in the entertainment industry argued that Kimmel’s suspension was a capitulation to the government’s attempts to censor free speech.

Kimmel later slammed critics’ reactions to his September 15 monologue, saying the reactions to his comments were “intentional, and I don’t think they were characterized as malicious.” Back on air, the comedian appeared contrite over his comments about Kirk’s death, saying he “never meant to make light of” the incident.

Winn-Dixie Company may sell or close more than 30 stores in reorganization

The Winn-Dixie Company, which has roots in Florida, has a “renewed focus” on Florida. The company will sell or close stores in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana, and add a new store in Florida.

play

The Winn-Dixie brand is gaining momentum.

Southeastern Grocers, which owns the Harvey’s Supermarkets and Winn-Dixie chains in the South, will change its name to The Winn-Dixie Company and move its stores outside of Florida and Georgia.

The Jacksonville, Fla.-based company also plans to increase its focus on the Sunshine State, where the forerunner of Winn-Dixie was founded in Miami in 1925. As part of that strategy, the company announced the acquisition of three Hitchcock Markets in Florida. Winn-Dixie stores in the northern Florida cities of Alachua, Keystone Heights and Williston will open in stages over the next few months.

Winn-Dixie’s reorganization includes the sale and closure of some stores.

Winn-Dixie has also reached or is currently working on the sale of 32 Winn-Dixie stores and eight Harvey’s supermarkets in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi. Some stores were sold to Food City and Piggly Wiggly. Store relocations and closures are expected to be completed by early 2026, the company said.

“As we enter our next 100 years as a brand new 100-year-old Winn-Dixie Company, we are accelerating growth where our roots are deepest, while staying true to our purpose of feeding and enriching the communities, families and neighborhoods that have supported us for generations,” Southeastern Grocers CEO and Chairman Anthony Hacker said in a statement. Mr. Hacker will remain Winn-Dixie’s CEO and chairman.

Earlier this year, Hacker and a group of private investors acquired Southeastern Grocers from Aldi US, which also acquired the company and its supermarket chains Winn-Dixie and Harvey’s in a deal that closed in March 2024.. In this transaction, Southeastern acquired approximately 170 grocery stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi, in addition to its existing Winn-Dixie liquor store operations.

The Winn-Dixie Company will continue to operate approximately 220 Winn-Dixie and Harvey’s stores until each store closes due to conversion to the Aldi format. Meredith Hurley, a spokeswoman for Southeastern Grocers, told USA TODAY that in early 2026, Winn-Dixie will begin converting “some Harveys supermarkets into Winn-Dixie stores in the market format that best meets the needs of our customers and communities.”

After restructuring, Winn-Dixie Company will operate approximately 130 traditional grocery stores and 140 free-standing and grocery-adjacent liquor stores in Florida and Georgia.

Employees at stores that are closing, such as Winn-Dixie in Williston, Fla., “will have the opportunity to continue serving customers in new locations,” the company said, referring to the Hitchcocks Market that will open in the city in early December.

Which Winn-Dixie and Harveys supermarkets might be sold or closed?

According to the company, the list is as follows:

“Throwing” is a toxic new Gen Z dating trend. Please be careful.

0

play

Be careful who you date. Not everyone who says they’re looking for a “king” or “queen” has good intentions.

There’s a new dating term called “throwing.” This means dating someone to increase your social status. The goal for the throne-seeker is to acquire an influential partner, so that his or her own image is improved by association. Unlike “shrecking,” where you go on a date with the hope that the other person will treat you better, thrones involves going on a date for the wrong reasons.

“Basically, a date is a throne used to exalt the person on the throne,” one TikToker explains in a video. “This scenario focuses only on social influence and status, not on building real emotional connections.”

The TikToker warns, “If someone seems overly focused on your status or social circle and changes their attitude towards you depending on whether you’re in public or private…this could be an indication of entitlement.”

Throne succession has been referred to by various names (such as “gold digging” and “influence chasing”). But what’s new is the impact social media has had on the throne. The heir to the throne doesn’t just date people for money or power. They also date people for followers and online influence.

“People curate their relationships the same way they curate their content,” says Amy Chan, dating coach and author of Unsingle: How to Date Smarter and Create Love That Lasts. “The rise of the throne also reflects the increased focus on self-image and external evaluation. Social media has amplified this, training us to care more about how our relationships look than how we actually feel.”

“Throwing,” hypergamy, and when dating becomes a performance

We all want love, but some of us want more.

Some people want love and situation. And if I had to choose, I would ultimately choose the latter.

“A throne is when someone positions their partner as a status symbol,” Chan says. “It’s dating someone because it enhances your image. The name comes from the idea of putting someone on the ‘throne’ in order to increase your influence or social capital.”

The term also comes at a time when online discussions about hypergamy and the supposed nature of romantic relationships are particularly contentious. In some parts of the Internet, such as the Red Pill and Manosphere communities, people (mostly men) frequently criticize women for pursuing relationships only with people they perceive to be in some way superior to them, a behavior known as “hypergamy.”

Some people online openly embrace this kind of relationship dynamic and seek advice from dating coaches and websites specializing in hypergamy. Still, arguments about how common this practice is seem to be contradicted by the data. Egalitarian marriages, in which wives and husbands each contribute about half of the couple’s combined income, are on the rise, according to a 2023 report from the Pew Research Center.

Chan said the social media factor is what separates past discussions about the throne and dating.

“The idea of dating is not new,” Chan says. “People have always sought partners who enhance their lifestyle and status. What’s different now is how much they care about how they look online. We live in an age of optics. Social media turns love into a public performance, and a partner can enhance not only your life, but your personal brand.”

What should people do about the “throne”?

If you’re worried about your throne tendencies, the best thing to do is to tell your partner about it. Start a conversation. Ultimately, Chan says, “anxiety about someone’s intentions cannot be resolved by overanalyzing or playing games.”

“Ask questions, share how you’re feeling, and pay attention to how they respond,” she says. “Emotional safety does not exist without honesty.”

And Chan encourages all heirs to the throne around the world to look inward. Ask yourself what is really important to you in a relationship. Could you have fired a potentially great partner because they didn’t have the influence you were looking for?

“Ask yourself what you truly value and whether your actions reflect the person and partner you want to be,” she says. “If not, please change your policy.”

Arizona sues U.S. House of Representatives for failing to swear in Democratic election winner

Arizona Attorney General Chris Mays previously issued an ultimatum to House Speaker Mike Johnson: “Swear in Adelita Grijalva or I’ll take you to court.”

play

  • Arizona Attorney General Chris Mays and Congresswoman-elect Adelita Grijalva are suing the Legislature over the delay in Grijalva’s swearing-in.
  • The lawsuit asks a federal judge to allow someone other than House Speaker Mike Johnson to administer the oath of office.
  • Democrats have accused Johnson of slowing the process to prevent Grijalva from voting on key issues.

Arizona Attorney General Chris Mays and Representative-elect Adelita Grijalva are suing the Legislature, asking a federal judge to approve an alternative method of swearing in Grijalva after Democrats won a special election in September.

Mays had been promising to sue for days and was furious that House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) had not yet taken the oath in Grijalva and would not set a firm date for the oath. Mays and Grijalva are asking the court to give Johnson a bypass.

“Speaker Mike Johnson is actively depriving Arizonans of one of their seats in Congress and, in the process, disenfranchising the voters of Arizona’s 7th Congressional District,” Democratic Rep. Mays said in a statement. She reiterated concerns that Southern Arizonans living in the Grijalva area are victims of “taxation without representation.”

The lawsuit was filed Oct. 21 in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., against the U.S. House of Representatives, the Clerk of the House of Representatives and the Sergeant at Arms.

The application asks a judge to order that someone other than Johnson be able to administer the oath to Grijalva, and that once she is sworn in, she must be recognized as a member of the House. The complaint states that “any person authorized by law to administer the oath” is eligible, but does not name any specific individuals or officers.

A federal law that says the speaker administers the oath of members is not supported by the U.S. Constitution, which only requires members to take an oath, the lawsuit argues.

“Speaker Johnson cannot continue to disenfranchise entire districts and suppress their representation in order to protect accountability for this administration and prevent justice for Epstein survivors,” Grijalva said in a statement provided by Mays’ office.

In filing his case against Grijalva, Mr. Mays doubled down on a legal strategy that some observers had questioned. Ms. Grijalva has an easy path to proving that she was affected by the delay, which is necessary to meet the legal standard to proceed with the case. Mays’ position was even more uncertain. Prime Minister Boris Johnson argued the issue was beyond legal theory and accused Mays of high political status.

Mays gave Johnson an ultimatum on October 14: “Swear on Grijalva or I’ll take you to court.” Democrats have ramped up pressure on the Republican House speaker after Johnson swore in two Florida Republicans at a ceremony earlier this year, raising concerns about politically motivated hypocrisy.

The complaint cites precedent, although it acknowledges that precedent is not legally binding on courts. The lawsuit includes several pages outlining the political controversy surrounding Grijalva’s swearing-in and includes multiple citations to news articles about the delay.

Democrats said Johnson was trying to delay Grijalva’s promised vote on the operation to release investigative files related to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. Epstein’s relationships with high-profile figures, including President Donald Trump, have drawn scrutiny, with many Republicans pushing for more records to be released.

But Johnson said he would swear in Grijalva once the House of Commons resumes regular voting. As the government shutdown drags on, it’s unclear when that will happen, but Johnson this week opened the door to that possibility if the Senate passes legislation to pay furloughed workers.

“Arizona’s full legislative representation and Mr. Grijalva’s right to hold public office are not limited to the Speaker’s decision to hold the House in ‘regular session,'” the complaint says.

Mr. Grijalva won a landslide victory in a special election in September to fill the seat vacated by the March death of his father, longtime Congressman Raul Grijalva, D-Ariz.

Trump is seeking $230 million in damages from the Justice Department, report says.

0

play

President Donald Trump is asking the U.S. Department of Justice to pay him $230 million in compensation for investigations during his first term and lawsuits filed after he left office, according to the New York Times.

Trump filed two complaints through the administrative claims process, the newspaper reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

At an Oct. 21 Oval Office event, the president was asked about the reparations effort and appeared to acknowledge it, citing the unusual nature of potentially overseeing huge payouts from the government he runs.

“You know that decision has to be made on my desk,” Trump said. “And it’s very strange to make the decision to pay for it yourself.”

“But I have suffered tremendous damage,” Trump added. “And all the money we make goes to charity.”

Asked afterwards how much money he was seeking, Trump said: “I don’t know what that number is. I’ve never talked to them about it.”

The New York Times reported that Trump’s initial claims were that his rights were violated, including during the investigation into whether his 2016 presidential campaign had ties to Russia. The second allegation revolves around an investigation into whether Trump mishandled classified documents, including an FBI investigation at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property in Palm Beach, Florida, according to the Times.

Trump is seeking $115 million in his second request, alleging “invasion of sequestration, malicious prosecution, and abuse of process,” the Times reported.

According to the report, the Justice Department requires the approval of the deputy attorney general or deputy attorney general for settlements of claims exceeding $4 million. Deputy Attorney General Todd Branch was President Trump’s personal attorney.

Asked about potential conflicts of interest, Justice Department spokesman Chad Gilmartin said, “Under no circumstances will all Justice Department employees follow the guidance of their career ethics officers.”

Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee announced on social media that Rep. Jamie Raskin, the committee’s ranking Democrat, is opening a so-called investigation into “this $230 million taxpayer cut by President Trump.”

The newspaper said both complaints were filed before Trump won the 2024 election.

Coca-Cola launches new cane sugar soda in US promoted by President Trump

0

President Trump publicly touted Coca-Cola’s plan to sweeten its drinks with U.S. sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup in July.

play

Coca-Cola is launching a new cane sugar soda after President Donald Trump publicly urged the company to stop using high fructose corn syrup earlier this year.

The Atlanta-based company confirmed in an email to USA TODAY that it has begun introducing 12-ounce single-use glass bottles of Classic Soda, made with U.S.-grown sugar, in “select U.S. markets.” “This launch reflects our continued commitment to giving people more ways to enjoy the beverage they love,” Coca-Cola said in a statement.

Coca-Cola Chief Financial Officer John Murphy said in an interview with Bloomberg on Tuesday, October 21, that supply chain challenges are limiting the rollout.

“It’s going to be a cautious development,” Murphy told Bloomberg. “The amount of sugar cane available in the United States is limited.”

Chief executive James Quincey announced in late July that the company would bring a cola sweetened with U.S. cane sugar to market in the fall, saying the new drink would “complement” and “expand” the company’s product range. However, the company did not replace high fructose corn syrup as the sweetener in its flagship product. The company already uses cane sugar internationally in some of its carbonated beverages, including Mexican Cola and other non-Cola beverages made in the United States.

Coca-Cola initially did not confirm its intention to use cane sugar

Coca-Cola initially declined to comment on its intended use of cane sugar after Trump claimed it would be used.

“I have spoken with Coca-Cola about using real sugar in U.S. Coke, and they have agreed to do so,” President Trump wrote in a July 16 post on Truth Social. “I want to thank all the authorities at Coca-Cola. This is going to be a very good move by them. You see. It’s going to get better!”

Coca-Cola did not confirm the claims at the time, saying in a statement that it would share details about the new product soon and appreciated President Trump’s enthusiasm for its product.

High fructose corn syrup is one of the ingredients the Trump administration is asking companies to remove from food and drinks as part of its “Make America Healthy Again” initiative.

Is cane sugar healthier than high fructose corn syrup?

Although sweeteners are broken down differently in the body, there is no scientific consensus indicating that cane sugar is overall “healthier” or “better” than high fructose corn syrup, which is widely used in processed foods because it is cheaper to produce and more shelf-stable than regular sugar.

“High fructose corn syrup and cane sugar are both added sugars, and both contain glucose and fructose. Cane sugar is sucrose and contains 50% fructose, while high fructose corn syrup typically contains about 55%,” Dr. Wesley McWhorter, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, previously told USA TODAY.

The FDA says it is “not aware of any evidence” of a safety difference between foods containing high fructose corn syrup and “foods containing equal amounts of other nutritive sweeteners with approximately equal glucose and fructose content, such as sucrose, honey, and other traditional sweeteners.”

Like all types of added sugar, both cane sugar and high fructose corn syrup can have negative health effects when consumed in excess, including weight gain, diabetes, and heart disease.

Trump administration considers changing special education administrators

0

This potential move would be one of the most important steps yet in President Trump’s effort to reduce the influence of the Education Department.

play

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Education is in the early stages of hiring another agency to help oversee federal special education programs, a spokesperson said.

The possibility of a blame shift comes after the Department of Education laid off nearly the entire special education department more than a week ago.

The impending move would be one of the most significant steps yet in President Donald Trump’s effort to reduce the influence of the Education Department. And for families of students with disabilities, it raises a host of new questions about whether a major overhaul at the federal level could have an impact.

It also highlights how recent court decisions and slight Republican pushback have emboldened the Trump administration to functionally dismantle the Department of Education, despite legal oversight of the White House’s authority.

A few months ago, the administration was temporarily prohibited from subcontracting the Department of Education’s career and technical education programs to the federal Department of Labor. The Supreme Court lifted that moratorium in July, but litigation over the initiative continues to progress.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon has publicly suggested that oversight and management of billions of dollars in federal funding for special education programs could be “better handled” by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

The agency is run by Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., one of the most polarizing figures in Trump’s cabinet. President Kennedy has been criticized for being skeptical of vaccines and repeatedly making unsubstantiated claims about the cause of autism.

In a statement to USA TODAY on Tuesday, Maddie Biederman, the Education Department’s assistant secretary for communications, confirmed that the department is considering outsourcing responsibilities related to special education. She did not specifically name other agencies involved in the effort.

“Secretary McMahon has made it very clear that his goal is to close down the Department of Education, move education back to the states, and eliminate jobs.” “The Department is exploring additional partnerships with federal agencies to support special education programs without disrupting or impacting students with disabilities, but no agreements have been signed.”

Biedermann added that McMahon is “committed to protecting the flow of federal funding that supports our nation’s students with disabilities.”

The White House has laid off about one-fifth of the Education Department’s workforce starting October 10, as it ramps up pressure on Congressional Democrats to end the ongoing government shutdown. The layoffs include more than 120 employees in the special education department and nearly 140 employees in the Office of Civil Rights, which primarily investigates disability-related complaints in schools, according to a government declaration in court documents.

Thousands of other layoffs across the federal workforce were temporarily halted by a judge last week.

Starbucks CEO teases AI voice ordering and new menu

0

Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol dropped the news on Oct. 16 during an appearance on Yahoo Finance’s “Opening Bid Unfiltered” podcast.

play

Starbucks customers may one day be able to order drinks, including alcoholic beverages, just by talking into their cell phones, the company hinted last week.

Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol dropped the news on Oct. 16 during an appearance on Yahoo Finance’s “Opening Bid Unfiltered” podcast. At the time, he was attending the Dreamforce conference, an artificial intelligence (AI) event in San Francisco.

“We’re also experimenting with audio-to-visual (AI),” Nicol told podcast host Brian Sozzi. “There are a lot of cool things we’re experimenting with, like forecasting and scheduling, but none of it at scale yet.”

He envisions a future where customers don’t even need to open the Starbucks app. You could even speed up the ordering process by saying to your phone, “I need a Starbucks order. I’ll be there in 10 minutes.”

“Everything happens seamlessly through the app, and before you know it, you’re at Starbucks and your drink is ready,” he said, adding that AI could help the company do this.

What other AI features has Starbucks implemented?

Nicoll said in the podcast episode that the company’s Green Dot Assist feature is probably Starbucks’ biggest AI implementation to date.

Starbucks announced the launch of Green Dot Assist in June, billing it as a virtual assistant that assists baristas in real time. Starbucks says its virtual assistant is the company’s first generative AI tool to assist employees in real time, allowing them to receive assistance via an in-store iPad instead of reading a manual.

“For example, if a barista needs a quick reminder of the ingredients in a seasonal drink, Green Dot Assist provides guidance in seconds, helping our partners deliver exceptional customer service with confidence,” the company said in June.

According to the company, Green Dot Assist will initially be installed in 35 stores, with more stores expected to be installed in the near future.

So far, the assistant has been successful in helping the manager run the cafe, Nicol said.

“If you have a problem with a piece of equipment or how to make a particular drink, having AI support is a much faster way to get to the right answer faster and get the right solution faster,” he said.

Another technological addition Starbucks has made is Smart Queue, which prioritizes orders and shows customers on-screen whether their order has been received, placed, or ready for pickup.

Is there a possibility that robots will come to Starbucks?

Nicol said Starbucks is experimenting and learning how AI can impact its business, including how other companies are using AI and what it will look like at Starbucks. While discussing potential changes to Starbucks Cafe, the host asked Nicole if the company is considering adding robots to its business model.

“We’re not there right now,” Nicole replied. “We’ve just brought more partners back into the store. They’re real people who are here to provide an authentic experience of authentic crafts.”

When asked if AI is helping the company increase productivity, Nikkor said the company is in the early stages of implementing the technology. However, he acknowledged that AI could help speed up operations.

Nicol said that while AI could help the company code faster, Starbucks currently uses legacy systems and needs to find a way to combine them with AI.

New food and drinks coming to Starbucks, and possibly alcohol, CEO says

Nicol also mentioned new menu offerings, noting that Starbucks is launching artisanal pastries and “protein-focused breakfast items.”

Nicol said the company’s egg bites, which include versions with bacon and Gruyère, Italian sausage, egg white and roasted red pepper, were popular with customers and are here to stay.

“We need to find (ways) to continue to take advantage of it,” he said. “While we continue to make great strides in the morning session, we are optimistic about what we can do in the afternoon session.”

Sozzi, the host of the podcast, mentioned Starbucks, which previously served alcohol, and asked Nicol if he thought the company should continue that practice.

On a smaller scale, there’s room for experimentation, Nicol said, pointing to the lavender matcha margarita and espresso martini drinks available at Starbucks Reserve, a specialty brewing, aging, infusing and blending of unique drinks in major cities such as Chicago, New York City and Seattle.

Retrofits were also a topic of discussion, as Nicol noted that the company has completed about 100 modifications. He noted that the company’s plans for this year are to complete more than 1,000 “improvements,” with improvements focused on adding things like plants and rugs to create a more personalized experience.

“I always tell people that every coffee house needs to have a few seats where anyone can come in and say, ‘That’s my seat,'” Nicole said.

If you want to listen to the entire podcast, you can do so via Apple, Spotify, or YouTube.
