What will be open or closed on Halloween 2025? What you need to know.

0

play

This year Halloween is Friday, October 31st. On other public holidays, schools, banks, post offices, stores, businesses, and stock markets may be closed or have adjusted opening hours. However, Halloween is not one of those holidays.

Although this holiday is widely celebrated across the United States, it is not a federal holiday and therefore not a holiday for federal employees. But as the government continues to shut down, many federal employees will inadvertently spend the holidays this year.

In order for the day to become a federal holiday, it must be passed into law through Congress and signed by the president. Schools, banks, and some private businesses typically observe federal holidays as holidays.

The next federal holiday to note on the calendar is Veterans Day, which falls on Tuesday, November 11th this year. Several banks and the U.S. Postal Service confirmed to USA TODAY that they will be closed on the holiday.

Here’s what you need to know about which venues will be open and which will be closed on Halloween 2025.

Is the post office open on Halloween?

Yes, the post office will be open on Friday, October 31st.

Are banks open on Halloween?

Yes, banks will be open as usual on Friday, October 31st.

Is the stock market open on Halloween?

Yes, the stock market will be open as usual on Friday, October 31st.

How many federal holidays are there?

The 11 days per year that are recognized as federal holidays are:

  • New Year’s Day (January 1st)
  • Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday (third Monday in January)
  • Washington’s Birthday (also known as President’s Day, third Monday in February)
  • Memorial Day (last Monday in May)
  • June 19 National Independence Day (June 19)
  • Independence Day (July 4th)
  • Labor Day (first Monday in September)
  • Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples Day (second Monday of October)
  • Veterans Day (November 11)
  • Thanksgiving Day (4th Thursday of November)
  • Christmas Day (December 25th)

Federal employees in Washington, D.C., also take leave every four years when a new president takes office.

CBS News to discuss Gayle King’s future on ‘CBS Morning’

play

CBS News is responding to a report that television powerhouse Gayle King may resign from her job as host of “CBS Morning” due to changes at the station.

A CBS News spokesperson told USA TODAY in a statement: “We have not had any discussions with Gayle regarding his contract through May 2026.” The statement added that King is “a truly valuable asset to CBS, and we look forward to engaging with her regarding the future.”

The clarification was in response to a Variety report that the 70-year-old veteran journalist will not remain in his current position after his contract expires. Mr. King held the position at CBS News for 12 years.

Variety reported that King may be moved to another position within the network as CBS assets are restructured following the merger of Skydance Media and Paramount Global in August.

Paramount began long-awaited layoffs on October 29, affecting about 2,000 employees, about 10% of Paramount’s workforce, according to CBS News and NBC News. King, who has shared desks with Nate Burleson, Tony Dokoupil and Vladimir Dutiers, has been at the helm of the popular morning show since 2012, when he helped relaunch “CBS This Morning” with Charlie Rose and Erica Hill.

The change in Mr King’s role was preceded by a review of other networks earlier this year. In July, it was announced that “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” would begin airing in May 2026, with Paramount describing the decision as “a purely economic decision given the difficult circumstances of late night.”

Also, Norah O’Donnell, Dr. King’s former “Mornings” co-host, left the “CBS Evening News” in January after 12 years. Then, on October 27, it was announced that one of her replacement anchors, John Dickerson, would be leaving the network by the end of the year.

Dickerson did not provide a reason for his upcoming departure.

On October 6, Paramount Skydance announced that it had acquired digital media company Free Press. Co-founder Bari Weiss was subsequently appointed editor-in-chief of CBS News.

Weiss, a former Wall Street Journal op-ed editor, resigned from the New York Times in 2020, citing a “civil war” in the newsroom between “woke people (mostly young)” and “liberals (mostly over 40)” in response to Sen. Tom Cotton’s column “Send in the Troops,” which called for a military response to Black Lives Matter protests.

President Donald Trump calls on Republicans to abolish Senate filibuster rules

0

play

WASHINGTON – Republican President Donald Trump has called for the Senate to eliminate filibuster rules to avoid obstacles for Democrats as the government shutdown enters its 30th day.

The filibuster is a Senate rule that requires the consent of 60 out of 100 senators to pass most bills. Republicans hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate and a 219-213 majority in the House.

“It’s time for Republicans to play the ‘trump card’ and move forward with something called the nuclear option. Abolish the filibuster, abolish it now,” President Trump wrote on Truth Social on Thursday, October 30th.

There was no end to the partial shutdown in sight by Oct. 30, as Senate Republicans urged Democrats to support stopgap funding measures through Nov. 21 and Democrats called for negotiations to extend expiring federal tax credits. Such credits help Americans purchase private health insurance through the Affordable Care Act.

The shutdown began Oct. 1, the first day of the 2026 federal fiscal year, after Republicans and Democrats in Congress were unable to agree on a bill to fund government services.

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office announced on October 29 that the government shutdown will cost the U.S. economy between $7 billion and $14 billion, and the stalled government spending could reduce gross domestic product (GDP) by up to 2% in the fourth quarter.

“We are in power now, and if we do what we have to do, we will end this ridiculous, country-destroying ‘shutdown’ immediately,” President Trump wrote on October 30.

About 750,000 federal workers have been furloughed since federal funding ended. While the Trump administration has taken steps to pay military, federal law enforcement and immigration officials, other federal employees are working without pay.

Mike McDaniel and Lamar Jackson lead Ravens vs. Dolphins winners and losers

0

play

  • Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson returned from a hamstring injury and threw for 204 yards and four touchdowns.
  • The loss has reportedly increased pressure on Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel, putting his job security in jeopardy.
  • Baltimore’s victory closes the gap with the Pittsburgh Steelers for first place in the AFC North.

The Baltimore Ravens provided further evidence that they’re on their way to, if not quite, back on Thursday night with a 28-6 beatdown of the sinking Miami Dolphins in their first game of Week 9.

Baltimore QB Lamar Jackson certainly looked like he was back to full strength, playing for the first time in over a month since injuring his hamstring in Week 4 against Kansas City. His presence and unparalleled ability seem to have further stabilized a team that is finally recovering from a season-long slump.

What about the fins? Yes, as always, the winners and losers were far beyond what was obvious on the scoreboard, so let’s unpack the subset.

winner

lamar jackson

After a surprisingly lackluster performance against the Chicago Bears on Sunday, the two-time league MVP was predictably dominant against the Dolphins, a team he has historically crushed. Jackson completed 204 yards passing, at one point making nine consecutive throws in the second half, scoring four touchdowns, and looked healthy enough while passing, even though he didn’t have to leave the pocket much. Jackson, who had a passer rating of 143.2 on Thursday, has scored 140 or higher in four of the five games against Miami.

Ravens tight end

Mark Andrews, Isaiah Likely and Charlie Kohler had seven receptions, 105 yards and three TD grabs, with Andrews scoring two of them. When they and Jackson are firing on all cylinders, it’s a dangerous group – and they could officially dispel the idea that Andrews might be moved ahead of Tuesday’s trade deadline.

geran phillips

The four tackles and sack of the always elusive Jackson provided a nice closing argument for competing teams looking to acquire the top pass rusher ahead of the tradeoff on Nov. 4 at 4 p.m. ET. Phillips, who is set to become a free agent after the season, could be ready to increase his asking price even more in the coming weeks. if He will join a better team in the coming days where he can further showcase his talents.

derrick henry

Having Jackson back helped, with Henry rushing for 119 yards. Much of that came in big chunks (4 of 19 carries for 81 yards). In fact, this is the second time in the last three games he’s reached the century mark, providing yet another silver lining in Baltimore’s rise.

loser

mike mcdaniel

Miami coach and general manager Chris Grier has received more attention than any other player in the league when it comes to his employment situation. Just four days after giving them some reprieve with an inspiring performance in a 34-10 win over Atlanta, the Dolphins once again looked lifeless in front of clearly disillusioned fans at Hard Rock Stadium.

“I think we came here to play,” McDaniel said afterward, but his tone somewhat belied that assertion, especially after a second half in which his team didn’t inspire.

Want to sum up this game? Miami turned the ball over three times, and Baltimore didn’t turn it over once. The Dolphins were unable to convert on any of their three red zone chances, while the Ravens converted on all three of their chances. Games, sets and matches.

In normal times, it might make sense to fire a coach who walked dead after Thursday night’s game, but it’s equally likely that McDaniel will be out at least until Week 11, when the team plays in Madrid, after which it might be more logical for Stephen Ross to pull the trigger during the team’s full bye week. Still, the owner left the box early on a night when his team was less competitive, and when the fans who showed up were vocal (bags over their heads or not) and headed for the exit well before the final gun.

tua tagovailoa

After he drove Prime Video analyst and former teammate Ryan Fitzpatrick to work, everything went downhill. Tagovailoa seemed to be exaggerating by wearing a visor – his teammates were at least vocally supportive of it in the days before the game – but apparently, after protecting his swollen eye, he ran out of luck in Atlanta. On Thursday, a wide-eyed Tua gained an inefficient 261 yards and gave nothing to suggest he or his coaches are the long-term solution for this franchise.

pittsburgh steelers

In four days, the Ravens regained a one-and-a-half game lead over the AFC North leader. If the Steelers can’t deal with the explosive Indianapolis Colts and a league-best 7-1 record Sunday at Acresure Stadium, that gap could continue to shrink. Add in Baltimore’s mini-bye and four more losing teams in a row before hosting Pittsburgh on Dec. 7, and it’s becoming clear why oddsmakers are favoring the Ravens to retain the division title despite a 3-5 start.

Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit

It is certainly permissible to make a slip of the tongue during a dog game. Perhaps that’s why Michaels confused “Miracle at the Meadowlands” with “Monday Night Miracle,” and why Herbstreit invoked “Push Touch.” Carson Wentz pardons you guys, good luck next week in Denver.

derrick henry

Why do the Ravens keep running “push-tucks” with Andrews, even though it looks so ugly and predictable? Apparently it’s a better option than handing the ball to Henry in short-yardage situations due to long build-up speeds or flawed blocking.

world series

Avoiding prime-time NFL matchups in general is one of the few strategies Major League Baseball seems to employ, which explains why the Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Dodgers were on the road on Sunday and Thursday. But Shohei Ohtani, Vlad Guerrero Jr. and others probably could have taken the NFL to the woods on this night…but they’re instead relegated to drawing the attention of the coveted 18-34 demographic on Friday and, hopefully, Saturday night.

Some Kirkland Home stores are scheduled to close by the end of the year, but will not be converted to Bed Bath & Beyond stores.

Amy Sullivan, CEO and director of Brand House Collective, said on a Sept. 16 conference call with analysts that the company plans to close 25 stores by January due to lease expirations, and those stores are not part of the two-year transformation plan.

Brand House Collective announced on September 15 that it has sold Kirkland’s intellectual property to Bed Bath & Beyond for $10 million, which Bed Bath & Beyond said will accelerate the store’s transformation. Sullivan said on a conference call with analysts that Bed Bath & Beyond will have about 250 new stores.

Bed Bath & Beyond is looking to restart after filing for bankruptcy and closing all of its stores in 2023. The company reopened its first Bed Bath & Beyond Home near Nashville on Aug. 8, and has since opened two more locations in Tennessee, according to the company’s store locator.

USA TODAY reached out to Bed Bath & Beyond and The Brand House Collective for comment on the closures, but did not immediately receive a response.

Mortgage interest rates are rising due to the Fed’s failures. What does that mean for house hunters?

0

play

Mortgage rates rose to their highest level since October 9, analysts said, on disappointment that a third consecutive interest rate cut in December might not materialize.

On October 29, the US Federal Reserve (FRB) lowered its short-term policy interest rate by a quarter of a percentage point to 3.75-4%. However, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell dashed market expectations for a rate cut, saying at a press conference that a rate cut in December was “not a foregone conclusion.”

The CME Fed Watch tool, which tracks the likelihood of interest rate changes at each Fed meeting, showed the probability dropped to just 66.6% after the Fed meeting and now hovers around 73%. Still, it’s far from the 91.1% probability it was a week ago.

Mortgage rates were near the lowest level this year at around 6.13% heading into the meeting, but rose to 6.27% shortly after Powell’s remarks. It further rose to 6.33% on October 30th.

“The tone of Powell’s remarks put a damper on expectations for an accelerated pace of rate cuts, which was less friendly than expected, with yields rising modestly across the curve,” said Jeff Dergrahian, chief investment officer and head economist at nonbank mortgage lender Loan Depot.

Was this deja vu?

Before the Fed cut rates in September, mortgage rates had fallen to 6.13%, the lowest level in nearly a year, in anticipation of the rate cut. Mortgage rates rose after the Fed cut rates by 0.25 percentage points.

Similarly, mortgage rates moved in the opposite direction and rose by almost 1 point, even though the Fed cut interest rates by 1 point in several meetings at the end of 2024, according to the online financial products market Bankrate.

Will mortgage rates fall again?

BOK Financial predicted that mortgage interest rates could fall slightly from 5.9% to around 6.0%.

Slowing inflation and slowing labor production could continue to support the possibility of lower interest rates, but even if rates don’t fall, mortgage rates are still hovering around the lowest levels of the year, Dergrahian noted.

What does this mean for homebuyers?

Analysts don’t think the expected drop in mortgage rates will be enough to significantly help people find homes.

Bank of Korea Financial said, “More than 80% of housing loans are below 6%, and the ‘lock-in effect’ continues to suppress inventory and (housing) prices continue to rise.”

Fannie Mae forecasts that 5.16 million homes will be sold in 2026, which is lower than the previous forecast of 5.23 million, due in part to affordability issues.

But for those who already own a home, “on the bright side, Wednesday’s rate cut will immediately lower HELOC (home equity line of credit) rates,” Dergrahian said.

A HELOC is a revolving line of credit secured by the equity in your home. You can borrow funds as needed up to a certain limit and repay the amount used plus interest.

Two rioters convicted in Iranian plot to kill New York journalist

0

play

Had it not been for the traffic violation, a murder-for-hire plot organized on behalf of the Iranian government in July 2022 could have claimed the life of an Iranian-American journalist and human rights activist living in New York.

Instead, two men who federal prosecutors described as leaders of the Russian mob were convicted this week of their roles in the failed plot to kill Masih Alinejad, who until his departure in 2009 was a fierce critic of Iran and its human rights abuses.

On October 30, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that Iranian defendant Rafat Amirov and Georgian defendant Polad Omarov were each sentenced to 25 years in prison. Both defendants were found guilty in March after a two-week trial on charges including, among other things, murder for hire and attempted murder with the aid of extortion.

“The defendant and his criminal associates nearly shot and killed an Iranian-American journalist on the streets of New York,” said John Eisenberg, assistant attorney general for national security. “We are committed to holding accountable those who are complicit in this despicable regime.”

The Justice Department announced that Alinejad, who has publicized Iran’s discriminatory and oppressive treatment of women, suppression of political expression, and killing of Iranian protesters, was the target of multiple Iranian-mandated plots to harass, intimidate, and kidnap.

“The conspiracy exposed at trial involved actors on three continents and culminated with a hitman armed with an AK-47 outside Ms. Alinejad’s apartment,” said Jay Clayton, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York.

The most recent conspiracies prior to this murder-for-hire plot took place in 2020 and 2021, when Iranian intelligence officials and associates conspired to kidnap Alinejad from the United States in order to silence his continued criticism of the regime, according to court documents and trial evidence.

After the plot was discovered, Alinejad said, “I am grateful to the FBI for thwarting the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence’s plot to kidnap me.” “We have always feared the Islamic regime, and now the Islamic regime fears me.”

When those efforts failed, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps turned to Mr. Amirov and Mr. Omarov, according to court documents. Both men were senior members of the Bazghandi network, the Azerbaijani wing of the Russian mob. Amirov was a so-called vol, the highest rank of the mob, while Omarov, who aspired to become a vol, was his cousin.

According to the documents, the Guard offered Mr. Amirov $500,000 for the crime and provided personal information about Mr. Alinejad, including his home address in Brooklyn.

Around July 2022, Mr. Amirov sent information to Mr. Omarov. Omarov then shared the information with another gangster, Khalid Mehdiyev, of Yonkers, New York, in order to monitor and ultimately kill Alinejad.

According to the documents, Mr. Amirov and Mr. Omarov arranged for the delivery of $30,000 to Mr. Mehdiyev, who used some of the money to buy an AK-47 assault rifle, two magazines and 66 rounds of ammunition.

Mehdiyev repeatedly visited Alinejad’s neighborhood to stake out Alinejad’s residence and sent photos, videos, and updates on his activities to Omarov, who passed them on to Amirov.

According to the documents, events in late July 2022 unfolded as follows:

On July 24, Mediyev told Omarov that he was “at the crime scene.” Three days later, Mr. Omarov wrote to Mr. Amirov that Mr. Mehdiyev was ready to carry out the order and that “this matter will end today.”

The next day, July 28, Mehdiyev sent Omarov a video taken from inside his car with a rifle. “I’m ready,” he texted.

However, after staking out the mansion, Mehdiyev was stopped for a traffic violation as he drove away. Inside the vehicle, officers found an assault rifle, ammunition, gloves, a black ski mask and about $1,100 in cash, documents said. The rifle had a bullet in its chamber.

Mehdiyev was detained, and eventually the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps demanded the money be returned.

Law enforcement officials said the incident was part of an alarming increase in plots involving Iranian-funded criminal networks to target dissidents in the United States and around the world.

“This plot orchestrated by the Iranian government to assassinate dissidents in the United States shows the lengths to which authoritarians will go to silence the voices of freedom,” said Roman Rozhavsky, deputy director of the FBI’s counterintelligence division.

More powdered cinnamon brands than lead have been recalled. See affected products.

Additional batches of powdered cinnamon products were recently recalled by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration due to elevated lead levels.

DEVI brand and BaiLiFeng brand cinnamon have been added to the list of spice products subject to a recall dating back to July 30, 2024. Samples of both products were collected at retail stores, the FDA said in a Thursday, Oct. 30 notice.

“Through product testing through national programs and FDA confirmation, FDA has determined that the listed powdered cinnamon products contain high levels of lead and that exposure to these products may be unsafe,” the regulator said.

In the months since the initial advisory was issued, the FDA has provided various updates warning consumers to throw away affected products and avoid purchasing them.

Here’s what you need to know about the ongoing cinnamon recall, including a list of affected spices.

FDA continues to test cinnamon for toxins

Although no illnesses or adverse effects have been reported associated with the affected products, long-term exposure “may be unsafe” and “may contribute to elevated blood lead levels,” the FDA found.

Authorities warned that young people are “particularly vulnerable” due to their smaller size, faster metabolism and growth. High levels of lead exposure during early childhood can cause neurological effects such as learning disabilities, behavioral difficulties, and reduced IQ.

FDA will continue to work with state partners to analyze and review samples of cinnamon sold directly to consumers and at the time of import.

Grand Cinnamon recall: affected products, remedies

The latest product to be added to the recall, DEVI brand and BaiLiFeng brand ground cinnamon, increases to 18 the number of products distributed and sold at multiple retailers across the United States, including Dollar Trees in California and Fish World in New York.

In some cases, the affected products were shipped to multiple retail stores in a particular region or to “various supermarkets across the country,” the FDA said.

Consumers who have purchased the affected products are being urged to throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.

Cinnamon brands listed with FDA health warnings include:

  • Devi
  • Bailiffen
  • Roshni
  • Hetae (HT)
  • Dura
  • wise wife
  • jiva organic
  • super brand
  • original
  • killer
  • markham
  • Swad
  • supreme tradition
  • oriental indie company
  • ALB flavor
  • Shahzada
  • spice class
  • border

Additional information about affected products, including lead concentrations and universal product codes, can be accessed here.

Consumers who suspect they may have been exposed to lead or who experience symptoms associated with acute lead poisoning after ingesting an affected product should report symptoms and seek care from a health care provider.

To report a complaint or adverse event, such as an illness or serious allergic reaction, visit FDA’s Industry and Consumer Assistance.

Tires can deflate in cold weather. Here’s how to stay safe

0

play

As temperatures drop, so does tire pressure.

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, in many parts of the country, the average date of the first frost has passed and the cold nights of fall are already creeping in.

According to the American Automobile Association, as temperatures drop, tire pressure can decrease by 1 to 2 pounds per square inch for every 10 degrees of temperature drop.

“This is simply due to how air molecules react to changes in temperature,” said David Bennett, senior automotive manager at the American Automobile Association (AAA). “In cold weather, air molecules move more slowly and the air pressure decreases.”

Under-inflated tires can increase stopping distances, reduce road grip and reduce fuel efficiency, Bennett said.

How to check tires

AAA recommends checking tire pressure using a tire gauge.

Gas stations may provide air pumps, and AAA warned that those pressure gauges can be damaged by exposure to the elements or overuse.

Additionally, drivers are advised to check tire pressure after the tires have cooled, typically three hours after driving, then remove the valve stem cap and press the gauge against the system.

According to the AAA, there are three types of pressure gauges.

  • Stick pressure gauge: About the size of a pencil, this gauge forms a rod that slides out of the valve when you push the gauge into the system. It’s relatively inexpensive and easy to store in the glovebox, but it can be difficult to read.
  • Dial pressure gauge: Used in the same way as a stick pressure gauge, but more expensive and difficult to store in the vehicle. Similar to a blood pressure cuff, the dial pressure is easier to read than a stick pressure gauge.
  • Digital pressure gauge: The most accurate of the three. Dial pressure gauges have an electronic screen instead of a stick or dial.

Check tire pressure without a gauge

In situations where you don’t have a tire pressure gauge, there are several things you can do to identify underinflated tires.

  • Examine the wheels. Tires flex where the rubber makes contact with the road.
  • How your wheels feel: If your tires hurt when you press on them, the air pressure may be low.
  • Add weight to your vehicle: If your tires seem to flatten when you add weight to your vehicle, your tires may be underinflated.
  • Changes in handling: If your car doesn’t drive smoothly, bumps more than usual, makes steering noise, or has difficulty turning, your tire pressure may be low.
  • The most accurate way to check tire pressure without using a tire gauge is to take your vehicle to a mechanic.

Tire pressure can be adjusted at home using an air pump or air compressor. Additionally, drivers can refill their tires for a small fee at gas stations offering aviation services.

The Grammy-winning singer and outspoken pop star, 23, addressed income inequality and wealth disparity in a candid speech at WSJ in 2025. The Innovator Awards were presented on Wednesday, October 29th in New York City. Eilish won the Music Innovator Award, joining a star-studded roster that includes winners Ben Stiller, Spike Lee, Hailey Bieber and George Lucas.

“I love you all, but there are some people here who have way more money than I do,” Eilish said. “If you’re a billionaire, why are you a billionaire? No hate, but please donate your money, shorty.”

One billionaire likely to have heard Eilish’s call to action is Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. The social media mogul and Meta CEO, who reportedly has a net worth of $227.9 billion, was spotted attending the awards ceremony with his wife Priscilla Chan.

“We’re in a really, really bad, really dark time in the world right now, and people need empathy and help more than ever, especially in our country,” Eilish added, according to People magazine and Billboard. “If you have money, I think it’s good to use it for good and give it to people who need it.”

True to her word, Eilish’s comments come after it was revealed that Eilish made a major donation during her Hit Me Hard and Soft World Tour, which is scheduled to end on November 23rd after more than 100 concerts.

Prior to accepting the WSJ Innovator Award, talk show host and presenter Stephen Colbert announced that Eilish would donate $11.5 million from her tour proceeds to support “organizations, projects, and voices dedicated to food equity, climate justice, reducing carbon pollution, and combating the climate crisis,” People and Billboard reported.

Money isn’t the only thing on Eilish’s mind these days. In an interview with WSJ Magazine published on Wednesday, Oct. 29, the “Wildflower” songstress spoke candidly about making her tours more environmentally sustainable through practices like plant-based catering, biodegradable confetti, and using recycled cotton in the production of tour merchandise.

「文字通り、持続可能な素材を使ってすべて同じものを作ることができるのに、人々はそれをやっていないだけだ」とアイリッシュ氏は語った。 “The main thing I’ve learned while working with many companies and creating my own merchandise and perfumes is that actually anyone can do it. It’s just that most people don’t.”

Modelo remains the top-selling beer while Michelob Ultra leads by volume

0

Michelob Ultra and Modelo Especial are competing for the title of America’s best-selling beer.

Modelo Especial has been the best-selling beer since taking the top spot from Bud Light in 2023. However, based on sales volume so far this year, Michelob Ultra, launched in 2002, has taken the lead, parent company AB InBev announced on Thursday, October 27th.

Based on the past 52 weeks of retail sales data, Michelob Ultra is the top-selling product by volume in retail stores including bars, restaurants, supermarkets, drug stores and convenience stores, according to a company news release.

However, Constellation Brands, which sells beer in the U.S. market, says Modelo Especial remains the best-selling beer by dollar amount spent, accounting for 10% of all beer sales. Constellation sells Modelo and Corona beers in the U.S., and AB InBev manages those beers in all other markets.

Who is right? It depends on how you look at it, says Dave Williams, president of Bump Williams Consulting in Shelton, Conn., which serves the alcoholic beverage industry.

Williams said Modelo Especial remains No. 1 in beer sales, but “Ultra remains on an upward trajectory” while overall beer sales are down. As Michelob Ultra sales volumes increase, the difference in dollar sales is narrowing, Williams told USA TODAY.

Michelob Ultra’s success is a reaction for Anheuser-Busch, which lost momentum at Bud Light due to a consumer boycott that began in April 2023 over its marketing partnership with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney.

While the Modelo Especial took the top spot, the Michelob Ultra was also gaining momentum. ABInBev CEO Michel Duqueris discussed the company’s third quarter financials during a conference call Thursday, Oct. 30, and said Michelob Ultra currently has an average market share of 8% nationally.

“The beer industry’s share is less than 6% in 20 states, so there is still significant opportunity for further expansion and growth,” Dukeris said.

Modelo and Michelob Ultra struggle as beer sales decline

Competition intensified in a tough market, with total beer sales down 2.2% in the 52 weeks ending October 5, 2025, according to Circana, which tracks sales at grocery stores, drug stores, mass merchandisers, convenience stores and other retailers.

Both AB InBev and Constellation were unable to avoid slowing down. They reported that total beer volume decreased by 3.9% and 4%, respectively, over the past three months.

Modelo Especial typically costs a little more than Michelob Ultra, so “while the volumes are much closer, it still leads in dollar sales,” Williams said. “Ultra is certainly gaining ground due to the fact that the brand is still seeing some growth, while Modelo continues to see some decline, primarily due to continued withdrawal from Hispanic shoppers across the U.S.,” he said in an email exchange.

Constellation Brands President and CEO Bill Newlands was asked during the company’s earnings call on Oct. 7 about the decline in sales that began earlier this spring and coincided with the deployment of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and subsequent raids.

According to the company’s survey data, about 80% of Hispanic and non-Hispanic consumers “continue to express concerns about the socio-economic environment that we face. … Our consumer base is a little more engaged, but they’re not attracted to it,” Newlands said.

Meanwhile, AB InBev has another bright spot in Michelob Ultra. Launched in January, the new Michelob Ultra Zero ranks second in the non-alcoholic beer growth category, which has grown 23% over the past year. “Non-alcoholic beer is an important opportunity to develop new consumption opportunities and increase participation,” Dukeris said.

President Trump welcomes trick-or-treaters to White House during government shutdown

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump hosted a Halloween celebration at the White House.

play

WASHINGTON – Fresh off a trip to Asia, President Donald Trump welcomed trick-or-treaters in elaborate costumes from Buzz Lightyear to Bassey’s Beaver to the White House for Halloween celebrations on Oct. 30.

Ballerinas, superheroes, dinosaurs and even the twins from The Shining lined up anxiously along South Drive at the White House to greet the president and first lady Melania Trump. One family dressed up as a drive-thru teller at McDonald’s, the president’s favorite fast food restaurant.

Orange, gold, and brown leaves cascaded around the portico balcony. A jack-o-lantern with a gentle face, studded with green and white gourds. Arrangements of orange and red flowers and dried flowers dotted the steps leading up to the White House.

Behind the people waiting along the driveway, a tan fence hid the demolition of the east wing, and a yellow bulldozer peeked over it.

Trump, wearing a red USA hat and a typical red tie, quipped, “Long lines. It’s about the same size as a ballroom,” referring to a planned 90,000-square-foot addition to his official residence.

The president greeted his family hours after returning to the White House from a week-long tour of Asia in which he sought to strengthen trade deals with China and South Korea and threatened to resume nuclear weapons testing.

The celebration follows a long tradition of Halloween festivities at the White House, dating back more than half a century to the Eisenhower administration, when then-First Lady Mamie Eisenhower decorated the mansion with pumpkins, dried cornstalks and red apples.

Former President Barack Obama welcomed local schoolchildren and military families to trick-or-treat on the South Lawn of the White House in 2009, and the Trump and Biden administrations continued to welcome families ahead of the spooky holiday.

President Trump appears to be hoping to return to his first term in the White House this year. At one point, Trump placed a candy bar on the square head of a child dressed as DJ Marshmello. This is similar to the moment that went viral when President Trump placed candy on top of a child’s Minion costume during the 2019 White House Halloween.

At most other trick-or-treaters, the president and first lady tossed full-size Hershey bars and Twizzlers in boxes with the president’s seal into children’s candy bags.

Pop culture costumes dominated the night, but some took a political bent. President Trump appeared to be enjoying the group of trick-or-treaters dressed just like him, the first lady and the Secret Service, and gave a young “Trump” a high-five.

A girl asked the president to sign a printout of the 2024 Time magazine cover published after the president’s assassination attempt.

The Air Force String Quartet, equipped with black instruments, played foreboding soundtracks from films such as Halloween, Jaws, and Harry Potter.

President Trump pointed to the musicians and said, “They’re good.”

Participants at the Halloween party included military, law enforcement, foster and adoptive parents, and some Trump administration staff and their children.

The celebration comes amid uncertainty over whether the nation’s military members will receive their next paycheck on Oct. 31 as the government shutdown drags on and families prepare for the expiration of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits.

The first lady’s office announced that after the event, the pumpkins and gourds scattered around the portico will be donated to the DC Central Kitchen.

Dolphins vs. Ravens live updates, scores, and Thursday Night Football stats

In another season, the Miami Dolphins (2-6) and Baltimore Ravens (2-5) make for an interesting “Thursday Night Football” matchup.

Both teams entered the season aiming for the AFC playoffs, but Week 9 is a critical point of no return. Both teams are outside of the playoffs, so both teams will need a lot of luck to advance.

The Ravens have Lamar Jackson back from a hamstring injury, but it took a little longer than expected. Now, Baltimore is heading toward the postseason and is on the brink of a miraculous run.

The Dolphins have had their fair share of injuries, but their 2-6 record is more indicative of organizational turmoil than injuries. Tyreek Hill has been out since Week 4 with a season-ending knee injury, and questions have been swirling over the duties of Tua Tagovailoa and Mike McDaniel.

All of these are pivotal moments for both teams, even though neither team has found a way to win this season.

USA TODAY Sports will bring you live updates, highlights and more from Week 9’s Thursday Night Football matchups below. All times are Eastern.

No, Pro Football Hall of Famer and lifelong Dolphin Dan Marino is not the owner of the Dolphins. That label goes to Stephen Ross.

Miami’s total offensive yards were more than double that of Baltimore through the first half, 226-109. Still, thanks to a few mistakes by the Dolphins, the Ravens held a 14-6 lead after 30 minutes.

The second half begins with Baltimore receiving the kickoff.

Miami had a chance to score three points before the first half, but Tua Tagovailoa had other plans. The Dolphins’ passer couldn’t find anyone on fourth-and-2, giving the ball to the Ravens with less than a minute left in the first half.

The Ravens’ star safety was down on the field for a period of time, with trainers treating his right foot. Eventually he trotted away and re-entered the room, not going to the medical tent.

After missing a 35-yard field goal, Patterson completed a 43-yard shot on two possessions, doubling the Dolphins’ scoring.

The Ravens still led 14-6 with 7:57 left in the second quarter.

The player who wears the number 12 jersey for the Ravens is safety Alohi Gilman. The number 12 jersey was famously worn by Ravens wide receiver Jacoby Jones, who passed away in July 2024.

The Ravens’ veteran tight end scored a touchdown on his second drive in a row. The shot came off a 20-yard pass from quarterback Lamar Jackson after two Dolphins defenders collided in man coverage.

With 14:10 left in the first half, Baltimore increased its lead to 14-3.

The Ravens were trying to end the first quarter. On the final play of the period, quarterback Lamar Jackson avoided a sack on third-and-four and found tight end Isaiah Likely wide open downfield.

After a 35-yard gain on the play, the Ravens begin the second quarter with a first-down play at the Miami 23-yard line.

The Dolphins looked poised to make it 4-1, but a false start penalty gave them a 5-yard lead. Miami head coach Mike McDaniel sent out a field goal unit to try to score points, but Patterson missed a 35-yard shot just minutes after taking a 49-yard shot minutes earlier.

The Ravens, still 7-3, took over at their own 25-yard line with 2:36 left in the first quarter.

The Dolphins mascot’s name is TD. It’s short for “The Dolphin,” but it’s clever. ask twice TD stands for “touchdown.”

Tagovailoa said there is no concrete answer to the eye problem.

“That woke me up,” he said. “(I) had some ideas about what it was, what it could be, but I had no idea what it was, whether it was a stye or an allergy to something or an allergic reaction.”

He was added to the injury report with an undisclosed illness prior to Week 8.

He played against the Falcons wearing a clear visor for the first time since high school. It paid off, and Tagovailoa had his best game of the season, completing 20 of 26 passes for 205 yards and four touchdowns.

Kayleigh Hartung, a sideline reporter for Amazon Prime, added that Tagovailoa was able to see much better Thursday night and said he would keep his visor on because of “swag.”

The Ravens quarterback, who was sidelined with a hamstring injury, appeared with his first touchdown pass in five weeks. This time his tight end, Andrews, was the beneficiary, giving Baltimore its first points of the game after a turnover.

The Ravens led 7-3 with 8:25 left in the first quarter.

An unfortunate turnover by the Dolphins’ Jeff Wilson gives the Ravens the ball deep in Miami territory.

The Ravens quarterback, who has been nursing a hamstring injury since Week 4, returned to the field on “Thursday Night Football.” His first drive ended in a 3-and-out on Rashod Bateman’s misfire.

Hill suffered a severe knee injury during the Dolphins’ Week 4 win over the New York Jets. Hill caught a 10-yard pass during the second half and twisted his leg after being tackled out of bounds.

McDaniel said Hill coped well with the injury and appeared to be in good spirits.

Dee Eskridge’s strong kick return put them ahead of the game, and wide receiver Jaylen Waddle’s 20-yard reception created the Dolphins’ first scoring opportunity.

Miami’s drive stalled at the Ravens’ 31-yard line, allowing Patterson to put his team ahead for three points.

The Dolphins led 3-0 three minutes into the first quarter.

Dee Eskridge puts the Dolphins in good field position to begin their first drive for Week 9’s “Thursday Night Football.”

The Week 9 “TNF” matchup between the Dolphins and Ravens will kick off at 8:15 p.m. ET. The Ravens will travel to Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens for the matchup.

  • TV channel: Not applicable
  • TV Channel (Miami Market): CBS4
  • TV channels (Baltimore market): ABC2

Week 9’s matchup between the Dolphins and Ravens will not be broadcast nationally as it is exclusive to Amazon Prime.

For viewers in the Miami market, the game will be broadcast on CBS 4. Viewers in the Baltimore market can watch ABC 2.

The Dolphins’ head coach is none other than the idiosyncratic Mike McDaniel. McDaniel, the former offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers, has struggled this season, going just 2-6 as Miami’s manager. The Dolphins are also aiming for a playoff win under his watch.

Jackson is scheduled to play against the Dolphins in Week 9.

It’s a long-awaited return for the two-time MVP, who missed the past three games with a hamstring injury. Jackson has been sidelined for a total of four weeks since being ejected in Week 4 against the Chiefs.

Cooper Rush will be the emergency QB3 and Jaire Alexander will not play tonight as a healthy scratch.

The Dolphins will face Jalen Wright on Thursday against the Ravens. The remaining inactive list is:

The Ravens QB2 is Tyler Huntley. Previously it was Cooper Rush, but Huntley replaced him on the depth chart.

The Dolphins aren’t currently in the AFC East basement, but they are dangerously close to it. The divisions are summarized as follows.

  1. New England Patriots (6-2)
  2. Buffalo Bills (5-2)
  3. Miami Dolphins (2-6)
  4. New York Jets (1-7)

There’s a lot of power in the AFC North, giving the Ravens a slim chance to win the division. When lined up, it looks like this:

  1. Pittsburgh Steelers (4-3)
  2. Cincinnati Bengals (3-5)
  3. Baltimore Ravens (2-5)
  4. Cleveland Browns (2-6)

Dolphins vs. Ravens Thursday Night Football Predictions

The Ravens will get a boost from the return of Lamar Jackson. The two-time NFL MVP will likely swing the pendulum in the Ravens’ favor in most games. Since the merger, only four teams have started 1-5 and made the playoffs, but the Ravens have a chance to become the fifth in recent history. Question marks continue to loom over Baltimore’s defense, but that side of the ball is also getting healthier. Derrick Henry should dominate. The Dolphins’ run defense was one of the worst groups until it mysteriously shut down Bijan Robinson last week. Baltimore forced its way to a double-digit victory.

Prince Andrew was stripped of his royal title by King Charles. what is his new name?

0

Prince Andrew will be officially stripped of his royal titles, the palace has announced.

Buckingham Palace announced in a statement on Thursday, October 30, that King Charles III has begun formal proceedings to strip former Prince Andrew, now known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, of his dignity, title and honors.

Mr Windsor will also leave his royal residence at Royal Lodge and be moved to alternative private accommodation, the palace said. The move comes three years after he was ousted as senior royal following allegations over his relationship with convicted American sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

“These charges are deemed necessary despite the fact that he continues to deny the charges against him,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement. “Their Majesties wish to make clear that their thoughts and utmost sympathy have been and continue to be for victims and survivors of all forms of abuse.”

Londoners react to Virginia Giuffre’s Prince Andrew allegations

Virginia Giuffre’s memoir, Nobody’s Girl, details allegations of abuse at the hands of Prince Andrew. Londoners reacted.

The former Duke of York continues to deny collaborating with the disgraced sex offender, but has previously said he agrees the controversy surrounding him is a distraction to the royal family.

In an October 17 statement shared by Buckingham Palace, Andrew said: “Following discussions with the King and my immediate family, I have come to the conclusion that continued accusations about me will interfere with the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family. As always, I have chosen to put my duty to my family and country first. I stand by the decision I made five years ago to distance myself from public life.”

Andrew’s late mother, Queen Elizabeth, stripped him of his patronage and military connections in 2022, making him a royal persona non grata. The decision came after he settled a sexual abuse lawsuit brought against him by Virginia Roberts Giuffre, who died by suicide in Australia earlier this year.

Since then, the 65-year-old has only appeared in public at family events, including his parents’ funerals and, most recently, the funeral of Britain’s Catherine, Duchess of Kent in September.

Where will former Prince Andrew live?

Andrew plans to move into a property on the Sandringham estate. However, the palace said it would not provide further details, adding only that “future accommodation will be privately funded by the King.”

Will Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie retain their titles?

Following Andrew’s removal of his title, many are interested in whether his daughters Princess Beatrice, 37, and Princess Eugenie, 37, will retain their titles.

According to Buckingham Palace, the couple will continue to be princesses as they are children of the monarch’s son under King George V’s 1917 Letters Patent.

Andrew’s great-uncle, Edward VIII, retained his royal title even after abdicating the throne in December 1936 to marry his wife and becoming Duke of Windsor, a title given to him by his brother George VI.

Does King Charles have the authority to do this?

King Charles chose to begin the process of formally stripping Andrew of his title without going through Parliament.

Buckingham Palace said: “This would take up valuable parliamentary time and prevent parliament from focusing on urgent national issues. The King is doing everything within his royal prerogatives.”

However, Buckingham Palace said it had informed the relevant government authorities and supported the decision in place.

What was Andrew’s role?

Andrew served as Lord Chancellor and was responsible for overseeing the Rolls of Peers.

Buckingham Palace said in a statement: “His Majesty has sent a Royal Warrant to the Lord Chancellor to remove the Duke of York from the Roll of Peers and to secure him the title of Prince and ‘His Royal Highness.'”

Is the dismissal against Andrew’s will?

Charles III decided to strip him of his royal title, but Andrew did not object.

Andrew said in a statement on October 17 that he agreed with the king’s decision.

“We now feel that we must go a step further. Therefore, I will no longer use my title or the honor bestowed upon me. As I have stated previously, I strongly deny the charges against me,” he said.

Why was his royal title stripped?

The stripping of Andrew’s royal title comes ahead of backlash over his past friendship with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and sexual abuse allegations against the royal by Virginia Giuffre, who committed suicide on April 25.

Allegations about Giuffre’s experiences with Andrew resurfaced this month with the publication of her posthumous memoir, Nobody’s Girl, on October 21st.

The former Duke of York retired from royal duties in 2019, but it was only this month that he announced he would no longer use his royal title.

What did Giuffre accuse the former prince of?

In 2015, Giuffre publicly claimed that Epstein trafficked her to Andrew when she was a teenager.

The Victims Refuse Silence founder said she first met Andrew in 2001, when he was 41 and she was 17.

In her memoir, she details how convicted sex offender Ghislaine Maxwell introduced Andrew to her as an old friend, and says she, Epstein, Maxwell and Andrew went to restaurants and nightclubs in London.

Andrew repeatedly denied her claims and said he had no recollection of meeting Giuffre.

Four major airlines call for passage of ‘clean’ legislation to end shutdown

0

play

WASHINGTON – A month into the federal government shutdown, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines and Southwest Airlines are each asking Congress to approve a “clean” Republican-backed funding bill to reopen the government.

The Oct. 30 statement from the nation’s four largest airlines was released on the same day as a White House meeting between airline industry leaders and Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy.

“It’s been 30 days, and I think it’s time to pass a clean CR,” United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby told reporters after the meeting, adding that Congress should negotiate on other policy items, such as health care, after the shutdown ends.

The airlines’ support could increase pressure on Senate Democrats, who have voted 13 times to block Republican-backed government funding resolutions that would push health policy changes.

Vance and Duffy warned that the situation at airports could become “disastrous” if the government continues to close them ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, as staffing shortages could occur at a time when there is typically a national surge in travel.

“What if the security lines were four hours long instead of one hour long?” Vance told reporters after the meeting. “What happens if the pilots stop coming to work?”

Delta Air Lines said in a statement that it “urges Congress to immediately pass a clean continuing resolution to reopen government” to ensure that air traffic controllers, Transportation Security Administration employees and other federal employees working in the airline industry are paid.

About 64,000 TSA employees and 13,000 air traffic controllers (considered “essential” workers) are working without pay during the shutdown. TSA employees did not receive their first full paycheck on Oct. 24, while air traffic controllers did not receive their first full paycheck on Tuesday. If the shutdown is still in place, they will not receive their second paycheck in November.

“The quickest way to end this shutdown and get these workers paid is to pass a clean continuing resolution (CR),” American Airlines said in a statement. “The longer the shutdown lasts, the more delays and cancellations we will see. Americans need better treatment, especially during the busy holiday season.”

Southwest Airlines called on Congress to “immediately resolve the impasse and resume normal government operations.”

“The public expects and has the right to travel in a system that pays air traffic controllers and federal security personnel in a timely manner,” the company said. “We call on Congress to adopt a clean continuing resolution.”

The airlines are taking a stand in the grounding fight, a week after four pilot unions also called on Congress to end the stalemate by passing a Republican-backed continuing resolution.

The Federation of Airline Pilot Associations, the NetJets Passport Pilots Association, the Allied Pilots Association and the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association each issued separate statements calling on Congress to pass a “clean” continuing resolution to reopen the government.

The Airline Pilots Association, the largest pilots union with about 80,000 members, called on lawmakers in an Oct. 15 statement to find a solution to restarting government, but did not say what legislation Congress should pass.

Volkswagen’s $5.8 billion tariff hit and Porsche’s woes shake consumer confidence

0

play

Volkswagen was hit hard in the third quarter by an expensive turnaround at subsidiary Porsche P911_p.DE, resulting in an operating loss of 1.3 billion euros ($1.5 billion) and billions of dollars more on top of pressure from U.S. tariffs.

Volkswagen VOWG_p.DE has booked a 4.7 billion euro charge from Porsche’s electric vehicle strategy shift announced in September, but Europe’s largest automaker is expected to suffer losses of up to 5 billion euros this year due to U.S. import tariffs and the resulting drop in sales, the company said on Thursday.

The tariffs will increase pressure on Volkswagen boss Oliver Blume, who last month warned the company would take a multi-billion euro hit and is set to take over as CEO of the troubled Porsche division early next year. Former McLaren manager Michael Leiters will take over as Porsche’s successor.

Tariff issues will continue

Volkswagen’s finance chief Arno Antlitz said at least 4 billion euros of the tariff costs were direct, with the rest related to margin losses from countermeasures.

The company believes it has room to stem additional costs by, for example, strengthening its belts and expanding its production base in the United States, and plans to decide by the end of the year whether its subsidiary Audi will set up a factory in the United States.

Volkswagen shares rose as much as 2% in volatile trading following the results, but turned negative by 1134 GMT, down 1.1%.

“The picture is mixed,” Antlitz said, noting that strong demand for Volkswagen cars in Europe is offsetting weakness in China, but that the company’s increasingly popular electric models are becoming more expensive to manufacture, weighing on profitability.

Volkswagen’s operating loss in the third quarter was down from the group’s operating profit of 2.8 billion euros a year earlier, but less severe than the 1.7 billion euro loss expected by analysts surveyed by Visible Alpha.

Porsche, which is 75.4% owned by Volkswagen, also suffered a steep loss in the third quarter as it delayed its EV rollout in an effort to win back consumers with hybrids and internal combustion engines.

Guidance maintained but overshadowed by chip supply concerns

Blume stepped down as Porsche CEO after investors began to question his ability to simultaneously lead both companies at a time when both companies are facing major challenges.

Volkswagen maintained its full-year forecast on Thursday, but said it was predicated on sufficient chip supply, hinting at the company’s next front line as a trade dispute over Dutch chipmaker Nexperia threatens to halt production in the auto industry.

Antlitz said Volkswagen is working “day-by-day, week-by-week” to secure production from supply shortages.

President Trump turned the world of nuclear weapons upside down in three hours.

0

play

When it comes to nuclear weapons strategy, stability is the goal.

However, President Donald Trump’s flurry of announcements regarding nuclear tests and nuclear submarines on October 29, during a visit to South Korea, could turn the world of nuclear weapons upside down.

It’s unclear what President Trump meant by ordering the Pentagon to resume nuclear weapons testing “immediately,” but nuclear weapons experts and foreign governments alike were shocked. The move could end a nearly three-decade period in which the world’s major nuclear powers have not detonated a nuclear weapon.

Paul Dean, a former deputy assistant secretary of state for arms control, said Trump’s ambiguous statements could increase the risk of nuclear conflict because “adversaries and allies alike are having a hard time understanding and interpreting what this means.”

President Trump’s earlier announcement of a joint nuclear submarine program with South Korea, now overshadowed by his comments about nuclear testing, could also dramatically shift the balance of nuclear weapons over time by giving Seoul the ability to covertly prepare its own bomb program, experts told USA TODAY.

Ankit Panda, a nuclear strategy expert at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, said both moves, while “different in nature,” could significantly destabilize the nuclear situation.

Will the US detonate a nuclear weapon?

In an Oct. 29 post, President Trump falsely claimed that the United States had more nuclear weapons than Russia and declared that the Pentagon would “begin testing nuclear weapons on an equal basis.”

The president did not say what he meant by “nuclear test,” and the White House declined on the record to answer questions from USA TODAY about the announcement. Trump also did not say whether the test could violate the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), which the United States has signed but not ratified.

One interpretation of President Trump’s statements is that he intends to order the detonation of nuclear tests, large and small. Such an experiment would likely take place underground in Nevada. Alternatively, the president may have meant that he intended to resume unarmed testing of nuclear delivery platforms such as missiles, although the United States already conducts regular nuclear missile tests. The last time the Air Force tested an unarmed Minuteman III nuclear missile was in May.

Trump, boarding Air Force One after meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, added that his decision was in response to what he called tests by other countries.

According to the International Test Monitoring Group, North Korea is the only country to have conducted a nuclear test explosion since 1998. But for decades, U.S. intelligence agencies have expressed concern that Russia and China continued to secretly test low-yield nuclear weapons even after both countries and the United States confirmed they had ceased testing in 1996.

U.S. officials have not elaborated on why they believe the experiment is taking place, and evidence of the experiment is classified as top secret.

But suspicions have long swirled around Russia’s Novaya Zemlya Islands, a remote region off Russia’s northern coast where more than 100 tests were carried out over several decades during the Cold War.

The State Department revealed that Russia has conducted “supercritical nuclear weapons tests” without reporting them since the 1996 moratorium was renewed. “Concerns remain due to these past activities and the uncertainty and lack of transparency regarding Russia’s activities in Novaya Zemlya,” according to the ministry’s 2025 Arms Control Compliance Report.

Increased activity has also been detected in recent years at the Lop Nur Experiment Station in Xinjiang, an autonomous region in northwestern China. A 2020 State Department report expressed concern that increased activity on the ground could mean China is not complying with the testing ban. No evidence was presented.

There are no “communication channels” between superpowers.

Both Russia and China expressed concern about President Trump’s statement.

Russia recently tested nuclear-powered cruise missiles and nuclear torpedoes, but those tests were unarmed evaluations of delivery platforms rather than nuclear warheads.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on October 30: “President Trump said in his statement that other countries were conducting nuclear weapons tests. Until now, we were not aware that anyone was doing so.” However, Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously said that Russia would resume full-scale nuclear explosion tests if other countries conducted nuclear weapons tests.

“China expects the United States to sincerely comply with its obligations under the (CTBT) and its commitment to a ‘suspension of nuclear testing,'” Chinese Foreign Minister Guo Jiakun told reporters at a press conference on October 30.

Dean, a former diplomat who now works for the arms control nonprofit Nuclear Threat Initiative, said the Trump administration needs to be clear about its intentions. With the last nuclear arms control treaty between the United States and Russia expiring in February, he argued that “this development is even more dangerous, and its ambiguity is even more dangerous when both sides do not have communication channels to properly interpret each other’s signals.”

Regardless of President Trump’s intentions, the United States is unlikely to be able to quickly launch a nuclear warhead. Nuclear weapons experts believe the National Nuclear Security Administration (which is responsible for nuclear testing, not the Pentagon) is not prepared to detonate a nuclear weapon “immediately.” The agency declined to provide comment on the record to USA TODAY.

Nuclear submarine bound for Seoul

The nuclear test announcement was not the only nuclear-related move that caused a stir during President Trump’s trip to Asia.

He accepted South Korean President Lee Jae-myung’s request to help the U.S. ally build nuclear-powered military submarines.

Although such ships do not carry nuclear weapons, “most or all nuclear submarines” are fueled by highly enriched uranium, which is close to weapons-grade purity, according to the World Nuclear Association.

President Trump did not reveal the fuel deal when he announced the submarine deal, but it will have a major impact on whether South Korea’s submarine program can also support bomb-making projects.

However, in his meeting with President Trump, Lee asked that the United States provide South Korea with the ability to refuel its planned submarines, which would likely require the establishment of domestic uranium enrichment capabilities. U.S. diplomats have traditionally opposed allowing South Korea to enrich uranium, citing the risk of nuclear weapons.

A majority of South Koreans support the production of nuclear weapons, and the issue has become a subject of domestic political debate.

Victor Cha, a Georgetown city government professor and top Korea expert at the think tank Center for Strategic and International Studies, told USA TODAY that the move “gives[South Korea]a potential nuclear capability” if South Korea’s uranium enrichment capability is established for the first time.

According to weapons experts, the nuclear incubation period is when a country does not have a nuclear weapons program but maintains the knowledge, technology, and infrastructure to quickly produce a bomb if needed.

Panda, the Carnegie Endowment expert, said South Korea likely sees value in the nuclear latency period as its relationship with the United States becomes increasingly uncertain.

“This is a major development for the alliance and a major change in U.S. policy,” Cha said, adding that he believes the project is “good for (South Korea) and good for the alliance.”

A submarine deal could strengthen the alliance by extending nuclear latency and strengthening South Korea’s naval capabilities against threats from China and North Korea.

However, not all experts believe that building nuclear weapons is a good thing for South Korea. This is because such measures could provoke North Korea or harm the world economy by imposing international sanctions on South Korea and its high-tech industry for violating the Nuclear Weapons Treaty.

  • Jeep has unveiled the next-generation Grand Cherokee, which features a slight redesign.
  • Stellantis is also rolling out a brand new 324 horsepower four-cylinder engine called the Hurricane 4, and there are a lot of changes under the hood.
  • The engine will be produced in Dundee, and factory staff expect further shifts to be added to meet demand.

Jeep is giving its best-selling SUV a slight facelift and a complete overhaul under the hood.

The 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee, announced by the company on Tuesday, October 28, was released with a slightly modernized boxer look and a ground-up turbocharged four-cylinder engine that Stellantis is calling the Hurricane 4.

Jeep CEO Bob Broderdorf unveiled the 2026 Grand Cherokee at a press event, saying, “We’re making so many changes to this brand so quickly,” noting that this will be the third revived or redesigned vehicle Jeep will launch in 2025.

But the Grand Cherokee is an important vehicle for the Jeep brand and Jeep’s parent company, Stellantis.

“(The Grand Cherokee) is the No. 1 sales driver, not just for the Jeep brand, but for Stellantis as a whole,” Broderdorf said.

For the 2026 model year, Jeep will offer several Grand Cherokee trim levels in two- and three-row configurations (with three rows reserved for the longer-wheelbase version, the Grand Cherokee L) and three different powertrains.

smaller than a penny

The new turbocharged Hurricane 4 engine incorporates fuel injection technology from Maserati’s F1 racing lineage to deliver 324 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque.

Inside the engine, on top of the cylinder, is a small piece of machined copper, smaller in diameter than a dime and as tall as a thimble. This device is part of the racing engine-adapted engine’s Turbulent Jet Ignition (TJI) system designed for Maserati.

This small piece of copper is a pre-chamber for the air-fuel mixture, which, when injected, is ignited by one or two spark plugs (at certain power levels, the Hurricane 4 operates with two spark plugs per chamber).

Mickey Bly, Stellantis’ head of global propulsion systems, said this technology allows the Hurricane 4 engine to balance high power with low fuel consumption. Small pieces allow fuel to be dispersed quickly, allowing for high efficiency.

Bly said he was involved in the development of the Hurricane 4 project, which began in 2021, and was reminded of how far automotive engineering has come by pulling 324 horsepower from a 2L engine. When he joined Stellantis in 1992, he said, “we were doing everything we could to get 300 horsepower out of a 5.7-liter (engine).”

Bligh is now rolling out a 2-liter engine that is one-third the displacement size of a V8 and produces more power while consuming significantly less fuel.

“Given that we’ve gone from a 5.7 liter to a slightly smaller 2 liter, the fact that we’re producing more power than just a few generations ago says a lot about where 2 liter technology is at,” Bligh said.

Bligh said the engine’s high performance is due in part to TJI technology, which is the auto industry’s first mass-produced, consumer-grade application of prechamber combustion technology. Asked whether racing engine technology would be reliable in civilian vehicles, Bligh said he was confident the Hurricane 4 would be reliable even with new equipment.

“I’m not worried about reliability at all. We beat the crap out of these engines (in testing),” Bligh said. “It’s really going to be a game changer.”

The engine will be manufactured in Dundee, Michigan.

The new Hurricane 4 engine will be produced at the Dundee Engine Plant, which also produces the EP6 engine that powers the hybrid Jeep Cherokee.

For Dundee Engine Plant Manager Lamarcus Keels, building engines for Stellantis’ best-selling SUV means stable headcount, faster production lines and more jobs at the Dundee manufacturing plant, which has been hit by layoffs and slow product supply.

“We were able to bring back everyone who was laid off at this plant from layoffs,” Keels said, adding that the plant plans to hire Stellantis employees who were laid off from other facilities as needed, per the union’s contract. “For the past three months, most of our employees have been coming back.”

The plan is to return the Dundee Engine Plant, represented by UAW Local 723, to three shifts if demand for the product is high enough. Currently, the plant is operating one and a half shifts.

Keels, who toured the engine shop floor, said the plant is learning how to make new engines and is slowly ramping up production with a goal of producing 111 engines per hour.

Dundee isn’t the only factory producing the new Hurricane 4 engine. Stellantis said in a news release that the engines will be manufactured “in the future” at the Stellantis Assembly Plant in Kokomo, Indiana.

The company previously announced a $13 billion investment in manufacturing facilities across the Midwest and indicated that Kokomo would begin manufacturing the Hurricane 4 in 2026, with the Kokomo plant listed as a beneficiary of $100 million.

Although engine production will take place in Dundee and Kokomo, the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee will be built at both Stellantis’ Jefferson North and Mack assembly plants.

When will the government shutdown end? Pain intensifies across the US

0

Safety net programs are underfunded. Thousands of government employees continue to work without pay. And as the holiday season approaches, significant flight delays are increasing.

play

WASHINGTON – One month into the government shutdown, the effects of the crisis are reverberating painfully across the country, putting the lives of millions of Americans at risk.

Massive travel disruptions due to staffing shortages are the norm as air traffic controllers prepare for their sixth week of unpaid work. More than 60,000 preschool children may have their educational programs discontinued. Hundreds of thousands of federal employees remain out of work, and the jobs of thousands more remain in legal limbo.

The rapidly deteriorating situation appears to be rattling lawmakers on Capitol Hill, who are starting to take back-channel negotiations over a potential shutdown more seriously after weeks of deadlock. “There’s a lot more bipartisan conversation,” said Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska. “That’s good news.”

As flu season approaches, critical federal health data has also stalled. Federal courts are slowing down their work. Immigrants waiting for visa approval are being told to wait even longer.

And the situation is only going to get more dire. Approximately 42 million Americans will not receive additional food assistance during the first week of November. This is because funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is set to expire for the first time in history. Neither Congress nor the White House have come together on legislation or workarounds to save the government while it remains largely shut down.

However, no formal agreement has yet been reached to restart the government. And it is unlikely that Republicans, Democrats and President Donald Trump, who just returned from a week-long trip to Asia, will come together to reach an agreement in time to prevent further harm to Americans.

But for the first time since the government shutdown began on Oct. 1, lawmakers face major consequences if they don’t find a way to reopen government agencies quickly. “I always try to be optimistic,” said Sen. Gary Peters, Democrat of Michigan. “We still have work to do.”

Lawmakers wary of food stamp crisis, travel delays

Perhaps the biggest worry for lawmakers is the expiration of food assistance benefits.

Joel Berg, CEO of Hunger Free America, warned that the impending crisis would be “America’s biggest hunger catastrophe since the Great Depression.” The situation is so bleak that one tribal reservation in Montana that relies on SNAP has resorted to slaughtering its buffalo herds for food.

In recent days, Democrats and Republicans have been desperately trying to avoid defunding SNAP, introducing competing measures to protect the program from suspension. However, none of these efforts have received any real attention. Republican leaders in Congress have so far opposed even a standalone bill to fund SNAP to soften the blow of the ongoing crisis.

“The president deplores this,” House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) said Thursday, Oct. 30, “but the funding to do it doesn’t exist.”

Meanwhile, travel delays are becoming more serious. The Federal Aviation Administration on Wednesday, Oct. 29, ordered a ground stop at Newark Liberty International Airport, a major transportation hub, citing staffing issues. Last weekend, all flights to Los Angeles International Airport were temporarily suspended for similar reasons.

Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy met with aviation industry leaders at the White House on Thursday, October 30th. After the sit-in, Vance concluded that the shutdown was “causing too many problems.”

“Everyone here is very concerned that there will be further delays and further stress on the people who are actually keeping the aviation system running,” he said.

The confusion has also affected some members of Congress. Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) told reporters that two flights have been evaded at the last minute in recent weeks. This never happened while she was a senator.

“I fly twice a week,” added Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.). “I want air traffic controllers to be happy, well-fed and free from anxiety and nervousness.”

The atmosphere on Capitol Hill is changing.

Democrats’ main sticking point in the shutdown fight continues to center on what they characterize as the looming health care crisis.

Health insurance subsidies from the Affordable Care Act are set to expire at the end of the year, raising premiums for millions of Americans. At the leadership level, Republicans have promised Senate Democrats that they will vote on extending the aid if they help reopen the government first. Democrats have long argued that changing minds requires more than a solid vote with an uncertain outcome.

But as the shutdown drags on, some hope for a solution.

“We don’t just have to tell the people what the problem is. We have to solve it,” said Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill.. “That doesn’t mean you can’t change it tomorrow. There’s always room for compromise.”

Sen. John Hoeven (R-North Dakota) suggested a tipping point in the government shutdown could come as early as next week.

A lively debate among rank-and-file lawmakers could be the beginning of the end of the government shutdown, but some are skeptical the talks will yield anything concrete. Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., said a key variable is still missing: party leadership.

“Leaders need to talk and resolve this issue,” she said.
