MTV cancels ‘Ridiculousness’ hosted by Chanel West Coast’s Rob Dyrdek

“Ridiculousness,” the inevitable comedy clip show hosted by Rob Dyrdek, is coming to an end after 14 years, USA TODAY has confirmed.

The MTV series is scheduled to end after this season, according to a person familiar with the matter, who was not authorized to speak publicly. The network is turning its attention to more selective and experimental programming, including new formats and fresh voices.

No more original episodes will be produced, but previously filmed episodes will air until 2026. Reruns will also continue to air on MTV and stream on Paramount+.

Season 46 of the series began airing on October 12th.

“Ridiculousness” was hosted by the former skateboard star alongside comedian Sterling “Steelo” Brim and Lauren “Lolo” Wood, who replaced rapper Chanel West Coast in 2024, and featured viral videos and failed stunts with commentary. “Ridiculousness” has aired on MTV since 2011 and is one of the network’s longest-running shows.

The news comes after Bloomberg reported that MTV paid Dyrdek “at least” $32.5 million, according to bankruptcy court documents reviewed by the business press. If the series had been renewed in 2028 and 2029, he could have earned more than $45 million annually, the outlet reported. Dyrdek’s production company, Superjacket Productions, filed for bankruptcy last month.

MTV and Dyrdek’s relationship goes back much further than “Ridiculousness.” The entrepreneur appeared on Rob & Big with friend Christopher “Big Black” Boykin from 2006 to 2008, and Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory with Boykin and Chanel West Coast from 2009 to 2015.

A series of spinoffs from “Ridiculousness”, including “Amazingness,” “Messyness,” “Deliciousness” and “Adorableness,” did not reach the same level of staying power on the network.

13 years after tragedy, father reunited with son’s funeral fire truck

Lee Chapman and his son Robbie probably had a lot to talk about when the 22-year-old returned home from his first shift as a firefighter with the Bloomington County Fire Department in Indiana.

But Robbie never made it home. He was killed on the morning of October 7, 2012, after finishing a night shift, when his car veered off North Kinser Pike and struck a tree.

Mr Chapman’s family, friends and firefighters who trained and worked with him were heartbroken.

In honor of their colleague, they draped a black cloth over Truck No. 3, a 1990 Ford pumper, and parked it outside Allen Funeral Home during Chapman’s service.

And when that was done, they loaded his coffin onto their backs. The fire truck was one of 14 in line to lead the two-mile funeral procession to the family cemetery where Chapman is buried.

His father, a former Bloomington firefighter, was moved beyond words by his kind gesture.

“They buried him respectfully. This was the truck that took him home and the coffin was right there. It was used for many years as a front-line truck and was there when Robbie started his job.”

On a sunny October day, we were standing on the Chapman family property north of Bloomington. A 35-year-old fire engine was parked in the grass there.

Lee Chapman told the fire chief in 2012 that he would be interested in selling the truck.

10 years have passed. Three years ago, the pump truck was sold at a buyer-only auction funded by taxpayers. It became the property of the Showick Township Fire Department in Lawrence County.

Lee Chapman wasn’t giving up. He contacted Shawswick Fire Chief Bob Brown and told him he wanted to buy the truck if it became disabled.

“I told him about it, and I think he was choking a little bit on the phone while we were talking,” Ms. Chapman recalled. Brown said he uses the truck for training and for kids who want to see it up close, but he will let him know if he decides to sell it.

Earlier this month, on October 6, Mr. Chapman was contacted by Mr. Brown. “Bobby called me the day before the 13th.”th Robbie’s death anniversary. He said he was a man of his word and would give me a chance first. ”

The next day, Chapman and his wife, Barbara, drove to the Lawrence County Fire Department to see the truck. The mission, conducted on the anniversary of his son’s death, was bittersweet.

“They didn’t change anything, the Bloomington Township letters were still there,” Chapman said. “It looked just like it did the day Robbie was taken to the cemetery.”

Chapman said Brown was happy to sign the deal. “He said, ‘Lee, I’ll never forget your story behind that truck.'”

They paid $5,000 to have the vehicle shipped to its new home, where it has become the centerpiece of a small fire truck collection.

“I would have paid a million dollars for this,” Chapman says proudly, running his hands over the shiny red metal.

Huda Beauty withdraws brand agreement with ‘Love Island’ star Huda Mustafa

Popular beauty brand Huda Beauty has ended its partnership with “Love Island USA” Season 7 contestant Huda Mustafa following a recent racism scandal.

In an Instagram post shared on Oct. 31, the cosmetics company said one of its “recent collaborators” had “demonstrated behavior inconsistent with our company’s values.”

Mustafa went viral this week after a clip from a recent livestream with his Netflix Too Hot to Handle and Perfect Match partner Lewis Russell went viral on social media after a fan allegedly used a racial slur towards Mustafa’s Love Island co-star, model Orlando Carsen.

“We are truly disappointed by Huda Mustafa’s recent live performance and take all forms of racism very seriously,” they said in a statement. “While we do not believe her actions are reflective of her character, we found her extremely upsetting.”

“We know that many members of our community and team were hurt and offended by these actions.”

Huda Mustafa’s boyfriend Louis Russell’s livestream included racial slurs

During a recent livestream on Russell’s Instagram, Mustafa and Russell responded to a call from an unknown caller who used a racial slur directed at Carsen.

A video shared online by TMZ shows the pair laughing in shock and Russell ending the call by saying, “Hey, hey, hey.”

“As a result, we have decided to end our partnership and remove related content from our social platforms and in-store displays,” Huda Beauty said.

The company went on to say, “Accountability is critical in moments like this, and we hope it will lead to meaningful change.”

Hollandria Kalten calls for true responsibility in Huda Mustafa case

Kazen said in an Instagram Story on Wednesday, Oct. 29, that the language used during the livestream was unacceptable. She added that she does not condone racism of any kind, “in anger, in jest, in no way.”

“Words like that hurt for generations, and pretending otherwise only continues the cycle,” Carsen said in part. “Defending it, laughing it off, or making excuses for it is even worse. I will not let this moment deviate from my purpose of uplifting our community. I stand firm in who I am and will use this as an opportunity to demand true accountability and recognition.”

She pledged to personally donate to organizations that educate and uplift the black community, including UNCF, the NAACP, and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, and encouraged others to do the same.

Kazen had previously publicly expressed his disappointment in Mustafa. At the Season 7 reunion, which aired on August 25, Kazen criticized Mustafa for not giving a speech. Racism shown by her fansArd She and another castmate, Cherry Visanes, After they all left the Fiji villa.

Huda apologizes after downplaying incident

Mustafa initially downplayed his anger over his reaction, but on Wednesday he posted another statement and publicly apologized to Kazen.

Mustafa said he spent much of the day reflecting and summarizing his thoughts so that his statements would not come across as insincere. She acknowledged in a short statement shared late Tuesday, Oct. 29, that she was not fully accountable for her actions.

“Olandria, it’s clear this comment was directed at you. I apologize for reacting so quickly. My reaction in that moment was not because I thought the words or the situation were funny, but because I was caught off guard. It was a nervous and uncomfortable reaction that I recognize was inappropriate,” she wrote.

“I want to be clear that I do not condone or tolerate anyone who uses language like this. I urge the individuals responsible to reflect deeply on their words and the harm they have caused.”

She added that she would personally donate to the NAACP and encouraged others to do the same.

Listeria outbreak linked to pasta dishes increases deaths and illnesses

play

Listeria outbreaks linked to ready-to-eat pasta products sold at stores like Walmart, Kroger and Trader Joe’s continue in multiple states, and the death toll is rising.

Since the last surveillance update on Sept. 25, seven new cases of listeria poisoning, also known as listeriosis, have been confirmed in three more states, increasing the number of active cases to 27 in 18 states, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This includes two additional deaths, bringing the total number of deaths to six as of October 30.

According to the FDA report, 25 of the 27 people who became ill were hospitalized, and one related illness resulted in the loss of a fetus. The FDA, USDA, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are investigating outbreaks in multiple states.

The outbreak, which the agency began investigating in June, can be traced to contaminated precooked pasta sold by Neato Fine Foods and used in pasta salads, frozen meals and other deli products sold by several major grocery chains.

Nate Fine Foods said in a statement on Sept. 29 that it initiated the voluntary recall “out of an abundance of caution” and is assisting health authorities during the investigation.

“Our top priority is ensuring the safety of those who enjoy our products, and we will continue to take all appropriate measures until this issue is resolved,” the grocer said. “Nate’s Fine Foods sincerely apologizes for any concern this incident may have caused. We will continue to be transparent and take all necessary steps to protect the health and trust of our consumers.”

Here’s the current status of the outbreak, including which products have been recalled:

Pasta products sold at Walmart, Kroger and more grocery stores linked to Listeria outbreak

Many of the pre-cooked pasta products sold at grocery store chains across the country, sold under various brand names, have been recalled due to the outbreak. For the complete list, see USA TODAY’s previous report.

Clean and disinfect bowls, cups, storage containers, and other surfaces that may have come into contact with the recalled product. Always wash your hands thoroughly after handling or preparing food, especially raw or uncooked meat or produce.

What are the symptoms of listeria poisoning?

According to the CDC, Listeria poisoning is the most common food poisoning caused by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. This is considered a serious condition and can be dangerous or life-threatening, especially for the elderly, people with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women.

According to the CDC, symptoms include:

  • heat
  • muscle pain
  • headache
  • stiff shoulders
  • confusion
  • loss of balance
  • convulsions
  • diarrhea
  • Other gastrointestinal symptoms
  • Miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth, and/or life-threatening infection of the newborn
  • death

The CDC says people in high-risk categories who experience flu-like symptoms within two months of consuming contaminated food should seek medical attention.

Chick-fil-A is opening a new beverage concept, Daybright. What you need to know.

Chick-fil-A is expanding into the specialty beverage world by opening a new concept store called Daybright in metro Atlanta.

play

Chick-fil-A has officially opened a new beverage-focused concept called Daybright, a fast-casual chicken chain confirmed to USA TODAY.

The restaurant opened in Hiram, Ga., on Thursday, Oct. 30, and offers “crafted coffee beverages, smoothies, cold-pressed juices, and dishes made with simple ingredients,” a company spokesperson told USA TODAY in an emailed statement.

Chick-fil-A said Daybright will have a two-lane drive-thru and a full dining room and will be open Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Daybright will be operated as a standalone concept by Red Wagon Ventures LLC, a subsidiary of Chick-fil-A Inc., but will not feature the fast-food chain’s menu items. Red Wagon Ventures was formed in January 2017 “with a mission to explore new ventures and create new concepts and services beyond Chick-fil-A restaurants,” the company said in a statement emailed to USA TODAY on Wednesday, Sept. 24.

“With schedules busier than ever, we know people are looking for easy and convenient ways to enjoy quality food and drinks,” David Farmer, vice president of Red Wagon Ventures, LLC, said in a news release. “Daybright was designed with this in mind, offering delicious drinks and portable snacks aimed at delighting customers and enriching their busy days.”

Chick-fil-A has expanded into other businesses in the past. In 2023, the company opened a restaurant called Little Blue Menu in College Park, Maryland, serving chicken fillet classics as well as wings and burgers.

What does Daybright offer?

According to Chick-fil-A, the Daybright menu offers:

  • specialty coffee
  • iced tea and lemonade
  • Fizz (frothy sparkling drink made with fruit juice)
  • smoothie
  • bright pressed juice
  • daily donut
  • Hot Takes (hot sandwiches, pressed burritos, English muffins filled with delicious ingredients, and other delicious snacks for easy meals on the go)
  • The children’s menu features “kid-friendly versions of breakfast favorites” such as PB&J and easy-to-drink smoothies.

Other fast food chains are trying similar beverage-focused concepts.

Other fast food chains are testing or planning to open concepts similar to Chick-fil-A’s Daybright.

Taco Bell expanded its Live Mass Café this year after launching a pilot in California in 2024. The cafe offers a wide range of drinks, including specialty coffees and the newly launched refresca. Refresca is a drink created to “satisfy every kind of craving, whether you’re looking for a refreshing sip, a boost of energy or a frozen escape.”

Taco Bell plans to open 30 stores in Texas and Southern California by 2025. The cafe will also offer Taco Bell’s popular menu items.

McDonald’s similarly tried a beverage concept called CosMc’s in 2023. Five alien-themed stores closed just two years after they launched, but the company has announced that it will bring CosMc’s drinks to McDonald’s stores across the United States.

Could Prince Andrew go to prison? Royal experts give their opinions

0

King Charles may have protected the royal family by stripping his brother of his title, but the former duke and his wife Sarah Ferguson still face legal risks.

This week’s headlines were shocking, even compared to historic royal scandals such as King Edward’s abdication, Princess Diana and Charles’ divorce, and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s departure from the UK. Prince Andrew was formally stripped of his royal titles and evicted from his home at Royal Lodge on the orders of his brother King Charles III. The announcement followed a deafening chorus about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, sex trafficking and sexual abuse of young women, including the late Virginia Giuffre.

Until King Charles took that step, “this was the most dangerous moment in 100 years of royal history,” said Andrew Lowney, author of several books on the royal family. Title: The Rise and Fall of the House of York, told USA TODAY. “Here we had a corrupt royal family, supported by the institution itself, and the people were completely outraged.” The former Duke of York’s story is far from over, and the latest developments only highlight new unanswered questions about the intertwined fates of Andrew, his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson, their daughters Beatrice and Eugenie, King Charles, and the monarchy itself. USA TODAY looks at some of the most pressing issues with the help of royal officials and experts.

Will Andrew be investigated by the authorities??

“That’s true. I think the public mood is that they want law enforcement to take a good look at him because there have been fabrications in the past,” Rowney predicted.

“There’s also an attempt to basically influence government officials by trying to smear Virginia Giuffre,” he says. Andrew asked his Metropolitan Police bodyguard to investigate Virginia Giuffre shortly before the charges against her were made public in 2021, according to emails obtained by Britain’s Daily Mail and published in early October.

The newspaper reported that Andrew gave British police officer Giuffre’s date of birth and US social security number, suggesting she had a criminal record. Andrew has not publicly responded to the accusations. The Metropolitan Police said it was looking into the allegations. Dai Davies, a former royal protection director and current royal commentator, said if the Mail’s report turns out to be accurate, it would mean Andrew had committed a criminal offence. “Quite apart from the sex trafficking allegations, Mr. Andrew could be charged with misconduct in office, which carries a life sentence,” Lowney said.

Will US authorities, Congress or the FBI, be able to question him?

“The FBI has wanted to talk to him for a long time, but as the victims’ lawyers have actually pointed out, he has refused to cooperate. They may renew their resolve to talk to him. He may fight,” Lowney said. Lowney believes there is “sufficient evidence of violations of law” to warrant a U.S. investigation, but it remains to be seen whether the Justice Department under President Donald Trump will pursue the case.

Why did Charles III make this decision now?

“He absolutely had to do that for the monarchy to be a symbol of national unity and actually work,” says royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams. Books published after Giuffre’s death nobody’s girl “The royal family advertises itself as a provider of soft power, and they’ve done a great job of that.[But]when you go to the Vatican and pray with the Pope, you go back 15 years and you’re in the shadow of an ever-worsening scandal,” he said, adding that Prince Charles had no other choice.

Lowney also believes that stripping Andrew of the title may have stopped the bleeding — for now. “They were worried about what else was going to come out,” Rowney added. “They know that some of the victims are more courageous than ever to speak out. It was better to let go at this stage.” In short, “they could basically wash their hands of him and he would be left to sink or swim.” Mr Davies said that although there was no new concrete information about the allegations against Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor that were now officially known, he strongly suspected that the Crown believed further damaging revelations could be “coming”.

What was the relationship between King Charles and Prince Andrew?

“I don’t think they had much in common because Charles was extremely intelligent and incredibly athletic when it came to sports,” Fitzwilliams says. Andrew, 65, is considered “very much a ‘cow’ type,” he says. British slang for someone who is slow, stupid, or cow-like. “He’s the one who tells stupid jokes and stuff, and Charles won’t like it… They’re totally different.”

Did Prince William have any input into his father’s decision?

Although the palace officially said the decision was Prince Charles’s alone, Mr Fitzwilliam said he was “absolutely convinced” that heir apparent Prince William weighed in after seeing public support for the monarchy waning in the UK and decided that the monarchy was “under threat” from the growing scandals.

Will Andrew be able to go to jail?

“There is a range of charges that could be brought against him if there is enough evidence,” Lowney said. “If the authorities investigate him properly, there is a good chance he will be prosecuted and there is a good chance he will be convicted and sent to prison.”

Mr Lowney said he expected it was “very likely” that Mr Andrew would go to prison, although it is extremely rare for members of the British royal family to be charged with or convicted of criminal offences. Princess Anne, the king and Andrew’s sister, became the first member of the British royal family to be convicted of a criminal offense after one of her dogs, a three-year-old English bull terrier, Dottie, bit two children at Windsor Great Park in 2002. (She pleaded guilty and paid a fine.)

What is Sarah Ferguson’s involvement and future activities?

The former Duchess of York and her ex-husband remained close and even lived together, but she will no longer receive royal support. “Her daughters may have to help support her because she has lost all her patrons,” Ms Fitzwilliams said. She “ran a very well-organized PR campaign” to regain public favor, but her rehabilitation efforts were “completely crushed. She will never recover from this.”

Lowney agreed, citing recently unearthed emails suggesting a close relationship between Ferguson and Epstein. “Four years after publicly claiming they had lost contact, she was with Epstein in one of his apartments,” he says. “She was in Palm Beach and she was always with him in New York. This relationship has been ignored with the focus on Jeffrey and Andrew, so she kind of slipped under the radar.”

The former duchess could face legal problems of her own, he added. “I think she’s certainly a key witness to what was going on. She must have seen what was going on. I think she’s very much in the frame, which is another reason they cast her adrift.”

Will Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice continue to carry out their royal duties?

Although the palace has allowed Eugenie and Beatrice to retain their titles, Fitzwilliams said it would be “very difficult” for either to lead high-profile royal events in the wake of their father’s disgrace and legal crisis. “Of course they are not to be blamed. They seem to have adapted well. As far as I know, they have careers, they have happy families, they want to do charity work. They shouldn’t stop doing that charity work.” Unfortunately, he doesn’t think there are “charitable organizations lining up” to work with them in the wake of the scandal. “I hope people look at this in the most rational way possible.”

Why is Andrew still on the list of successors?

Yes, but not in a practical way. “In reality, that doesn’t matter, because only working royals can inherit[the throne],” Fitzwilliams says. Andrew has not worked as a member of the royal family’s staff since 2019. Mr Fitzwilliams said removing Mr Andrew from public life would require him to “spend more time in Parliament on professional matters”.

Will Andrew appear at a public event again?

Andrew will live in a house on the royal grounds of Sandringham, but it is reported that he will not be attending the family’s Christmas celebrations. “Easter is no different,” Fitzwilliams said. “The only thing you can’t keep him out of is a funeral. I think you’ll see him slip into the back door and sneak out.”

Will the British monarchy be able to survive this situation?

Charles’ decision “has put a lot of the public anger to rest, although they’re not out of the woods yet,” Lowney surmises. “They’re showing they care about the victims. But things could still go wrong. The mood is that Andrew will have to pay some kind of fine for this. And if that involves sending him to prison, that’s going to be very popular. The sense that the elites aren’t getting away with it, that they’re responsible will send a very strong message that people will be very happy with.”

World Series Game 6 live updates, Dodgers vs. Blue Jays scores, channels

TORONTO — A year ago, John Schneider spent Halloween night in his lawn chair, drinking beer and watching kids trick-or-treating in his neighbor’s driveway. I’m not really interested in Halloween.

“In any case, I think this is a substitute holiday.”

This year, the Toronto Blue Jays manager will be competing for something more realistic: the team’s first World Series championship since 1993.

Yes, life has changed a lot for the Blue Jays over the past year, but after nine innings (or more) of Game 6 of the World Series, they may be changed forever. Standing in their way are defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers and Blue Jays ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who has pitched consecutive complete games, including a Game 2 win for Blue Jays ace Kevin Gausman.

They are scheduled to play that game at the Rogers Center, but outside, hundreds of Toronto police officers are “in full force” for what is sure to be a chaotic event.

The Dodgers are just hoping to have their lineup together again for Game 7. With that in mind, manager Dave Roberts once again adjusted his lineup, putting Tommy Edman in center field and starting Miguel Rojas at second base, once again knocking Mookie Betts from second to third to fourth in just three games as the former MVP battles a 23-3 cooler in this World Series.

Is it a meaningless trick or a reward for the Dodgers going into Game 7? Stay tuned.

Game 6 of the World Series will be broadcast on Fox and available to stream on Fubo.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto had one out and one base hit by Nathan Rooks, but an error by third baseman Max Muncy should have scored him, but he hit Vladimir Guerrero Jr. into an inning-ending double play, sending the game scoreless into the second inning.

Blue Jays starter Kevin Guzman struck out Shohei Ohtani, Will Smith and Freddie Freeman in the first inning.

Gausman threw 16 pitches on target, 11 of which were strikes.

TORONTO — George Springer won’t let the Toronto Blue Jays’ chance to win their first World Series since 1993 pass away. After leaving Game 3 of the World Series with a right side injury on a swing, Springer returned to the top of Toronto’s lineup for Game 6.

The Blue Jays came back from a 2-1 deficit to lead the World Series 3-2 without him. Still, Springer’s accomplishments in the playoffs (.884 OPS, four home runs, including the first three runs in Game 7 of the ALCS) were not forgotten by his teammates.

“What he brought to this team during the playoffs was huge for us. I think having him in the lineup probably calms us all down a little bit,” infielder Bo Bichette said before Game 6.

TORONTO — Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts knows the importance and consequences of Friday’s World Series game.

A win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night (8 p.m. ET on FOX) extended the season with a Game 7 at Rogers Center.

They lose and the season ends abruptly. And, fair or not, that is considered a failure.

TORONTO – One of the top two iconic franchises in the game, featuring international superstars and competing against Canada’s only Major League Baseball club. The match generated viewing metrics that ranged from pleasant surprise to universally enriching.

For Major League Baseball, this matchup between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Toronto Blue Jays was a worldwide hit, with historic performances from the unparalleled Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and the Blue Jays’ presence captivating Toronto and all of Canada like never before.

Game 1 averaged 32.6 million viewers in the United States, Canada and Japan, the most viewers since Game 7 of the 2016 World Series. And the combined attendance for Games 1 and 2 in the U.S. and Canada was 19.8 million, an increase of 24% from last season and the highest since the Cubs’ historic 2016 game against Cleveland. — Gabe Lux

TORONTO — Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the Dodgers’ biggest pitching star, will start Friday in an effort to save the season and is just trying to become just the fourth pitcher in history to pitch three complete games in one postseason.

If he throws a four-hit complete game in Game 2, pitching like he did when he retired the last 20 batters of a World Series game for the first time since Don Larsen’s perfect game in 1956, he could book a Game 7.

“Well, I hope he’s a little tired, but he’s pitched that many innings,” Blue Jays manager John Schneider said. “He’s unique because he’s got what I think are six or seven pitches and can transform into different pitchers as the game goes on.” — Bob Nightengale

However, in Games 3-5 in Los Angeles, the Blue Jays defeated the Dodgers 8-1 from the seventh to the ninth innings. Yamamoto will not pitch a complete game this time. And the Dodgers’ bullpen hasn’t improved.

Steve Gardner: Dodgers 3, Blue Jays 2 (10)

The pitching battle should be great, especially now that the bullpen has had time to reset. It will be difficult to produce a lot of runs, so let’s hope for a long ball from Shohei Ohtani’s bat late in the inning.

Jesse Yomtov: Dodgers 7, Blue Jays 3

The Dodgers will be able to hit a few home runs and play again the next day, leading to their first seven-game World Series since 2019.

Rare supercar designed for NBA legend Wilt Chamberlain is now on sale

  • This car was built for NBA legend Wilt Chamberlain, who is over 7 feet tall.
  • The Searcher 1 supercar was extended by 6 inches to allow Chamberlain to fit.

Have you ever wondered what kind of car the 7-foot-1-inch NBA legend drives?

Basketball Hall of Famer Wilt Chamberlain had a kit car custom built to his specifications. It’s a modified supercar like no other.

The 1986 Searcher 1 was developed by Lyncar, a British racing company that has built many race cars, including two F1 cars. Chamberlain’s vehicle was enlarged to accommodate his large size, allowing him to drive on the road and see out comfortably. And now you can have it.

This luxurious vehicle is on display at the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts, and is currently being sold by Julien’s Auctions, where it is available for bidding until November 6th.

Who is Wilt Chamberlain?

For those unfamiliar with Chamberlain, he was an NBA center who played for the Los Angeles Lakers, San Francisco Warriors (formerly Philadelphia Warriors), and Philadelphia 76ers. Regarded as one of the sport’s all-time greats, in 1962 he became the only player to score 100 points in a single game. When basketball fans see an insane performance by a modern-day player, there’s usually a disclaimer that Chamberlain accomplished the same feat several times during his time as an active player.

Professional basketball players earn a lot of money, so it’s no wonder they buy a lot of luxury items. However, when it comes to cars, some players are too tall for regular cars.

Shaquille O’Neal, who is 7-foot-1 and weighs more than 350 pounds, owns a customized Lamborghini, but was often teased by other players and fans that the cars he featured in Buick commercials were too small for him.

The Chamberlain had similar problems and did not fit many cars being sold at the time, appearing in a Volkswagen ad for the 1979 Volkswagen Rabbit. As a man over 7 feet tall, he needed a unique car that fit his lifestyle and personality.

how cars were made

Lyncar, along with the project’s lead designer, Peter Bohanon, created the vehicle to resemble the cars that raced at Le Mans. While they were putting it together, there was still strong input from Chamberlain during the creation process.

The Searcher 1 was a one-off supercar powered by a Marine Block GM V8 paired with an axial flow supercharger. The powertrain delivers 470 horsepower and reaches a top speed of over 200 miles per hour. The Searcher 1 uses a ZF five-speed manual transmission derived from the BMW M1. The interior was expanded an additional 6 inches to accommodate Chamberlain inside.

How much can the car sell for?

Bidding for Searcher 1 is already open and will end on November 6th. Bidding started at $50,000 and is standing at $200,000 as of Friday, October 31st. According to Julien’s Auctions, the vehicle is estimated to be worth between $300,000 and $500,000. For more information, visit juliensauctions.com.

President Trump reveals President Lincoln’s remodeled bathroom with gold and marble

0

play

President Donald Trump isn’t just doing social gatherings. He also does the toilet.

President Trump, who is often referred to as an “architect at heart” by aides, unveiled a lavish renovation of the White House’s Lincoln Bathroom with a marble and gold theme.

“I did it with black and white statuary marble,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social on Oct. 31, showing off his handiwork along with 25 before-and-after photos.

To be exact, there is one “before” and 24 “after”.

This restroom is for guest use and is not President Trump’s personal restroom. The statuary marble is a premium pure white Italian marble with dramatic gray veins. Traditionally used in sculptures and statues such as Michelangelo’s David, it is now increasingly being used for countertops and flooring.

“I renovated the Lincoln Bathroom in the White House, which was renovated in the 1940s in an Art Deco green tile style that was totally inappropriate for the Lincoln era,” he wrote, adding that the choice of marble was “very appropriate.”

The White House did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s questions about the cost of the renovations.

There was one detail he didn’t mention, but it was clear from the photo. The metal accents and accessories are all gold, his color of choice when it comes to decor.

The shower head, trash can, light scone, vase, shower door frame, hooks and towel rack are all gold plated, as is the vent cover.

President Trump, who said he considers himself an “important designer,” wrote, “This is so appropriate for Abraham Lincoln’s time, in fact, it may have been the marble that was originally there!”

Mr. Trump has had a long career in real estate and has put his designs on everything in the White House, from the presidential portraits, military flags and gold ornaments that decorate the Oval Office to the paving of the Rose Garden lawn. He is currently building a 90,000-square-foot ballroom, which will involve demolishing the east wing, drawing scorn from critics.

At a dinner held on Oct. 15 to thank donors for the construction of the ballroom, President Trump mused about the style of “Abe Lincoln.”

“There’s a little bit like Lincoln’s bedroom. The bathroom was done by the Truman family,” he said, referring to former President Harry Truman’s restoration of the White House in the 1940s. “And it’s done with green tiles, and it’s done in a style that’s not exactly Abe Lincoln. That’s not a good style.”

“It’s actually Art Deco, and Art Deco, you know, doesn’t go with 1850 or the Civil War. But what’s actually used is statuary marble, so I ripped it up and made a bathroom,” he said. “It’s absolutely gorgeous and completely in keeping with the atmosphere of the time, because Lincoln’s bedroom is incredible for anyone who sees it.”

President Donald Trump’s administration cannot cut off food assistance to millions of Americans during the ongoing government shutdown, two federal judges ruled Friday, ruling that the government must use $5.25 billion in remaining reserve funds as soon as possible.

Despite the 11th-hour ruling, thousands of community organizations, businesses, and food banks across the country are rallying to help the approximately 42 million people who are expected to lose access to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP or food stamps, starting Saturday, Nov. 1.

While the courts, Congress, and White House decide how to proceed, here’s where you can find resources and, if possible, help.

Donation destination

Anyone interested in donating to those in need should be sure to contact their local food bank to see what they need. There are also several online resources for fundraising for food banks and SNAP recipients.

  • Through Instacart’s Community Carts program, you can donate directly to your local food bank by selecting a facility and selecting the items you want to send. Click here to donate.
  • Propel is an app that many SNAP recipients use to manage their benefits and fundraise through GiveDirectly. Funds will be distributed directly to families through the Propel app. Click here to donate.
  • Feeding America works with food banks across the country. Click here to donate.

Other fundraisers may be circulating on social media, but be sure to check the platform and make sure it’s legitimate before donating. The Federal Trade Commission provides information on how to donate safely, and websites like Charity Watch and the BBB Wise Giving Alliance provide detailed guidance on specific charities.

Judge blocks President Trump’s order requiring voters to prove citizenship

U.S. District Judge Colleen Koller Kotelly in Washington, D.C., was the first to issue a final ruling on Trump’s executive order.

play

NEW YORK, Oct 31 (Reuters) – A federal judge on Friday permanently blocked part of Republican President Donald Trump’s executive order, ruling that the president cannot require voters to show passports or similar documents as proof of citizenship before voting.

Several lawsuits have challenged the president’s March 25 executive order overhauling federal elections, and courts have already temporarily blocked it from taking effect. U.S. District Judge Colleen Koller Kotelly in Washington, D.C., was the first to issue a final ruling on the executive order.

Koller-Kotely permanently blocked the portion of the executive order that required proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote. The justices had previously refused to block a portion of the executive order barring states from counting mail-in ballots received after Election Day.

The ruling followed a lawsuit by groups including the Democratic National Committee, the United League of Latin American Citizens, and the Federation of Women Voters Educational Funds.

The American Civil Liberties Union, which represents the League of Women Voters in the lawsuit, said Friday that Americans without a current passport do not need to purchase new documents to exercise their rights.

“While we celebrate this victory, we remain vigilant and will continue to fight to ensure that all voters have their voices heard without interference or intimidation,” said Sophia Lynn Lakin of the ACLU. “No president can circumvent the Constitution and make voting difficult.”

The White House did not respond to requests for comment.

The executive order called on bipartisan federal election agencies to amend the standardized national voter registration form to require documents such as passports as proof of citizenship.

Koller-Kotely found parts of the order illegal because the U.S. Constitution gives states, not the president, the power to oversee elections.

Trump has long questioned the U.S. election system, falsely claiming that his 2020 loss to Democratic President Joe Biden was the result of widespread fraud. President Trump and his Republican allies have also made unsubstantiated claims about widespread voting by noncitizens, which is illegal and rare.

Dolphins and GM Chris Grier part ways, but Mike McDaniel expects to stay

0

play

The writing on the wall in South Florida, in part anyway, became official Friday morning.

The Miami Dolphins and general manager Chris Grier, who has worked for the team for more than a quarter of a century, have mutually decided to go their separate ways.

“As we evaluated the state of our team and spoke with Chris, it became clear to both of us that change could not wait,” owner Stephen Ross said in a statement distributed by the team.

“We have to improve for 2025, 2026 and beyond, and we need to start doing it now. Champ Kelly will immediately take over as interim general manager and we will begin the process of finding a new general manager. I want to thank everyone for stepping up this season and their dedication to the Dolphins’ success. There is a lot of football left to play and we all need to fight even harder.”

“I have been, and continue to be, committed to building a winning team that consistently competes for championships. I am extremely proud of our leadership as an NFL organization and our continued commitment to our communities, but our on-field performance and team-building process has not been good enough. There are no excuses for this team. We want to thank you for your continued support and passion. We need a championship-level team to be proud of. We have a lot of work ahead of us to bring the Dolphins back to sustained success. We look forward to starting the work now, evaluating all areas of our football operations, and moving forward with a clear vision for the future.”

The defining moment obviously came Thursday night, when the Dolphins lost 28-6 to the Baltimore Ravens in a nationally televised game. Miami fans were vocal about their dissatisfaction with their team, and many fans were seen leaving Hard Rock Stadium early in the fourth quarter.

Grier and head coach Mike McDaniel, who remains employed, have been under investigation for more than months. However, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, McDaniel will remain in his position until the end of the season.

Ross gave Grier and McDaniel a vote of confidence in January after Miami’s disappointing 2024 season, which ended with an 8-9 record and missed the playoffs for the first time since McDaniel took over in 2022. The Dolphins haven’t won in the postseason since the 2000 season, which was the league’s longest active drought.

“Continuity of leadership should not be confused with acceptance that the status quo is good enough,” Ross said after the 2024 season. “We will take a hard look at where we are falling short and make the necessary changes to achieve our ultimate goal of building and sustaining a winning team that competes for championships.”

It’s almost certain that the Dolphins won’t be able to do that in 2025, with their 2-7 record dropping them to 14th overall in the AFC.

Grier was hired by the team as a scout in 2000 and was promoted to general manager in 2016. During his tenure, the team had a record of 77 wins and 82 losses, including the playoffs. Most recently, he and McDaniel have built an exciting team in recent years, headlined by quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and wideout Tyreek Hill as the linchpins of an often explosive offense. But Miami struggled to beat consistently good teams and win games, especially late in the season as the games were held in colder climates away from the warmer confines of Miami Gardens.

Grier’s trades for big-name players like Jalen Ramsey and Bradley Chubb yielded limited benefits while stripping him of draft capital. Even signing Hill, who missed the rest of this season with a knee injury and is likely to be released next year, ultimately didn’t move the team much closer to its first Super Bowl appearance in 40 years. Tagovailoa’s health and stability are also a big question, but that didn’t stop Grier from signing him to a four-year, $212 million extension last year, a contract structure that would effectively stick with the organization through at least the 2026 season.

The culture surrounding franchising is also a big issue these days. Hill, who was team captain at the time, infamously quit the club during last season’s final regular-season game against the Jets in New York, a game in which the Dolphins lost with a playoff spot on the line. Tagovailoa has spoken openly about Hill’s need to earn back the trust of his teammates during training camp, and recently questioned the responsibility of other players in the club’s 2025 spiral.

Grier, 55, is the younger brother of Mike Grier, currently GM of the San Jose Sharks, and the first Black man to hold such a role in the NHL.

Disney suspended content on YouTube TV and pulled channels such as ESPN and ABC from the platform after the two companies failed to reach a new contract agreement.

“Despite our best efforts, we are unable to reach a fair agreement, and starting today, Disney programming will no longer be available on YouTube TV,” YouTube TV said in a statement on social media late on October 30.

YouTube TV said in a statement on its blog on Oct. 23 that Disney proposed “expensive economic terms that would increase prices for YouTube TV customers and reduce customer choice.”

Google, the parent company of YouTube TV, and Disney had until Thursday, October 30 at 11:59 p.m. ET to reach an updated contractual agreement to continue programming on YouTube TV, according to a statement from Google obtained by USA TODAY.

In a statement to USA TODAY, Disney said it “remains committed to working towards a resolution as soon as possible.”

“Google, with a $3 trillion market capitalization, is using its market power to eliminate competition and negotiate successfully with all other distributors to undercut the industry standard terms,” the statement said.

In a memo signed by multiple executives to Disney Entertainment and ESPN employees, the company said, “We’re not asking for anything more from YouTube TV than what we’ve gotten from every other streamer: a fair fee for our channels.”

YouTube TV has announced that it will offer subscribers a $20 credit if the Disney Channel is unavailable for an “extended period.” This period is not specified.

YouTube TV has also faced other contract disputes recently.

This is the third time in two months that YouTube TV has faced a contract dispute with a major network partner.

In August, Google and Fox struggled to reach an updated contract agreement, and earlier this month the same issue arose between Google and NBCUniversal.

Both Fox and NBCU argued that Google had no intention of agreeing to a renewed contract with realistic terms or fees. However, a deal was ultimately reached in each case.

Bed Bath & Beyond will open two more stores in Tennessee this November.

The two stores will open on Saturday, Nov. 1 at The Avenue in Murfreesboro, Tenn., and at One Bellevue Place in Nashville on Saturday, Nov. 8, Brand Home Collective chief of staff Star Hudgens previously told USA TODAY.

The opening follows The Brand Collective (formerly Kirkland)’s announcement in September that it would reopen nearly all of its stores as Bed Bath & Beyond over the next two years, according to a news release.

Brand House Collective sold Kirkland’s intellectual property to Bed Bath & Beyond for $10 million earlier this year. The first revitalized Bed Bath & Beyond Home under the new company opened on August 8 in the Nashville suburb of Brentwood. The opening marks the first brick-and-mortar store since the Bed Bath & Beyond retailer declared bankruptcy and closed all stores in 2023. Bed Bath & Beyond has been selling online for the past two years.

Brand House Collective will close five Kirkland stores in 2025, according to a news release. CEO and Director Amy Sullivan said on a conference call with analysts in September that the company will close 25 more stores by January 2026 due to lease expirations. This will bring Bed Bath & Beyond Home’s footprint to about 250, she said.

The company did not say which Kirkland stores would close or which would be converted to Bed Bath & Beyond.

Bed Bath & Beyond coupons are still redeemable

Bed Bath & Beyond coupons will continue to be available at newly opened stores, the retailer said in a July news release. Current coupons outlined on the Bed Bath & Beyond website include $10 off a $150 purchase, $20 off a $350 purchase, $35 off a $700 purchase and $50 off a $1,000 purchase.

The retailer’s most popular coupon, the 20% Big Blue coupon that never expires, is still valid.

Chicago ICE facility is a ‘black box,’ detainees claim in lawsuit

0

Immigration enforcement detainees have filed a lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security, alleging that the conditions in which they were detained were “filthy” and “cruel,” and that the purpose was to “coerce” their deportation.

play

CHICAGO – Detainees held by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Illinois have filed a lawsuit alleging that the conditions in which they are being held are “filthy” and “cruel” and that the purpose is to “coerce” their deportation.

The federal lawsuit in the Northern District of Illinois comes as the Supreme Court considers whether to allow President Donald Trump to send troops to the city. Since the president launched a crackdown on the region known as Operation Midway Blitz, Homeland Security officials have announced 3,000 arrests in immigration enforcement operations. The facility at the center of the lawsuit is where new detainees are held before being transferred from Illinois.

The lawsuit filed by Pablo Moreno Gonzalez and Felipe Agustín Zamacona against Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and others acting on her direction provides the most detailed account yet of the conditions detainees experience. Journalists, members of Congress and clergy have not been given access to the facility in the Chicago suburb of Broadview, Illinois.

The complaint says the Department of Homeland Security has “installed a black box designed to remove people from the U.S. judicial and immigration systems,” adding, “The facility is a breeding ground for the spread of disease, with poor sanitation, clogged toilets, sinks and walls filled with blood, bodily fluids, and insects.”

According to the complaint, federal authorities use deplorable conditions, such as agreeing to deportation without facing a judge, as a way to “force detainees to sign immigration documents that many detainees do not understand.”

The lawsuit asks for better terms and for lawyers to be allowed in-house contact with clients. Immigration attorneys in Chicago have said for weeks that they have no access to detainees in the facility.

The plaintiffs are represented by attorneys from the MacArthur Justice Center, the ACLU of Illinois, and the Chicago office of the law firm Eimer Stahl.

Homeland Security officials claimed that the description of conditions at the facility was “false.”

“This type of trash about ICE facilities has led to an 8,000 percent increase in death threats against our employees,” said Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin.

Officials have also made changes to the site in recent months. Windows were covered with plywood panels, and authorities erected a large metal fence around the property until a federal judge ordered their removal.

Conditions at the facility have made it a breeding ground for some protests, with 68 people arrested for protests outside the facility from Oct. 3 to 19, according to Cook County Sheriff’s Office data shared with USA TODAY.

Justice Department attorney Eric Hamilton said during an Oct. 9 hearing in federal court in downtown Chicago that agents deployed $100,000 in non-lethal weapons to stop “rioters” from disrupting immigration enforcement on the ground. Since the start of the blitz on September 8th.

‘Keeping people in warehouses for days’: detailed terms of the lawsuit

The suburban Broadview facility named in the complaint is an Immigration and Customs Enforcement “processing center” where new detainees are registered before being transferred elsewhere.

Experts previously told USA TODAY that processing centers are not supposed to hold people for more than 72 hours.

Immigration officials at the facility are “currently holding people at Broadview for days on end,” according to the complaint.

Dozens of people are held in overcrowded cells, where they are forced to sleep for up to weeks on plastic chairs and concrete floors, according to the complaint. They lack food and water. They are unable to keep themselves clean, such as being refused access to menstrual products or changing their clothes.

Temperatures inside the facility were abnormal, and only some people received foil blankets or sweatshirts, according to the complaint. According to the complaint, detainees are not given medical examinations and are denied access to medical supplies, including prescription drugs brought by their families. The complaint says there is no privacy in the bathroom, allowing men and women to watch each other use the bathroom.

McLaughlin, Noem’s top spokesman, rejected the lawsuit’s description of the facility, saying it has adequate food, water, privacy and medical care. The spokesperson said detainees have access to phones to contact their families and lawyers. She said the facility is not used to house people long-term.

“The claim that there is a subprime environment at the Broadview ICE facility is false,” McLaughlin said. “In recent weeks, the worst of the worst, including pedophiles, gang members, and rapists, have been processed in this facility. The ACLU just needs to change its name. It’s clear they only care about illegal aliens who commit crimes, not Americans.”

  • According to court documents, Billups was an active participant in using Signal to commit fraud and receive $50,000 in wire transfers.
  • Billups was charged with wire fraud and money laundering and was placed on unpaid leave by the NBA.

Chauncey Billups played 17 seasons in the NBA and earned one of the cruelest nicknames of his generation.

A five-time All-Star and three-time All-NBA selection, Billups made so many clutch baskets during his time that people began to refer to him as “Mr. Big Shot.” In 2021, he became the head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, overseeing a team that began to show modest improvement over the past few seasons.

So how does someone like Billups, an NBA champion and Hall of Famer with lifetime earnings of over $105 million, end up embroiled in an illegal poker scandal? So, a Mafia-linked scheme, one that defrauded unsuspecting victims of at least $7.15 million?

Prosecutors and organized crime experts say it all starts with influence and recruitment.

But despite the explosive revelation that the Bonano-Gambino-Genovese crime family allegedly offered protection in a rigged poker game in New York, a closer reading of the indictment and detention warrant reveals that it is unclear whether Billups was aware of any alleged Mafia connections.

According to these documents, Billups participated in at least two poker games. The first took place around April 2019 in Las Vegas, and the second took place in late October 2020 at an undisclosed location.

Court documents are careful to specify only that the Mafia “supported the game in the New York area,” took a cut for security, and collected “debts owed from the game.”

Additionally, none of the indicted individuals named along with Billups at the April 2019 fight in Las Vegas are listed as members or associates of the three New York families.

There is no mention in either document of other organized crime organizations offering similar protections to the Las Vegas games Billups is allegedly involved with. This does not necessarily mean that such an arrangement did not exist, just that it was not outlined in the document.

To that end, Professor Federico Varese, senior research fellow at Oxford University’s Nuffield College and author of Mafia Life, believes that operations such as the one outlined in the indictment require protection wherever the match is being played.

“For me, it’s appealing because there’s a very clear division of roles,” Varese told USA TODAY Sports. “Everyone had a job, that’s very clear. This is like a textbook for the mafia to do what it does best: protect, coerce and resolve conflicts.

“This is classic stuff from the 1930s and ’50s. They still have the ability to control, to use violence, to instill fear just by the power of their reputation.”

But all this doesn’t answer another important question, and perhaps the most pressing: how did Billups allegedly become involved in this scheme?

“He’s become a star!”

Billups was indicted on October 23 in Portland on charges of wire fraud and money laundering, and the NBA placed him on immediate unpaid leave.

Prosecutors allege he was part of a team of poker players who cheated using fraudulent shuffle machines and “face cards,” a system that relays signals to players participating in the alleged operation.

“Why Chauncey Billups more than anyone else?” Virginia Commonwealth University criminology professor Dr. Jay Albanese told USA TODAY Sports. “You might expect this to happen to a young player who is out of control, a player who has a lot of strings attached.

“There are a few guys that I think should be on the list, but Billups wasn’t on my list. So I think that’s the concern right now.”

Details regarding the origins of Billups’ alleged involvement remain unclear. However, court documents reveal that Robert L. Stroud, a 67-year-old Louisville man, allegedly recruited fellow former NBA player Damon Jones into the operation.

“Criminals use celebrities like honey to bring in victims,” Frederick Mertens, former executive director of the Pennsylvania State Crime Commission, told USA TODAY Sports.

“The bottom line is that poker players and gamblers love to be around stars,” Martens said.

Prosecutors also share this opinion. The warrant details a match in Las Vegas in April 2019 and includes text messages between Stroud and Sophia Way, another defendant. Prosecutors said the messages occurred during a rigged game where Billups discussed things like the draw he earned as a Hall of Famer.

“The one guy at the end was acting like he wanted to get Chauncey’s money!” Stroud wrote in one of the detention papers. “He was a star player!”

Prosecutors allege this is what led Billups and Jones to the scheme.

“Defendant Stroud recruited former professional athletes, including Defendants Billups and Jones, into a conspiracy to lure wealthy victims to matches,” the letter said. “For their ‘face cards’ and their role as members of the fraud team, Stroud paid them a portion of the proceeds of crime.”

The letter further alleges that Stroud transferred $50,000 to Way through his company Lil Robbie Productions LLC after an October 2020 match at an undisclosed location. Mr. Way then transferred $50,000 directly to Mr. Billups.

In another series of texts, Stroud and Way discuss the need to intentionally lose certain hands to avoid suspicions of foul play after Billups and another alleged defendant “landed two gut shots on the river against the same man.” The two hands held a pot of at least $30,000, according to the messages.

To avoid being discovered, Mr. Way suggested having another player at the table participate in the scam, with Billups and other “face cards” intentionally losing to new players to deflect suspicion.

“Sounds like a plan,” Stroud replied, according to the letter.

“Okay, perfect,” Way concluded. “They already know all the signals…they just have to tell us which ones are which.”

This exchange strongly suggests that prosecutors believe Billups was not a passive participant in the alleged scheme, but rather actively used the signals to defraud unsuspecting victims.

What is unclear is how much Billups knew about the higher-ups in the alleged scheme. The key to answering this appears to be the nature of Stroud’s relationship with Billups, who is also accused of organizing rigged poker games in New York under Mafia supervision.

“There has to be some motive there,” Albanese said. “How could Stroud, or whoever, have been able to recruit him? What was the impetus? Maybe he can tell us.”

USA TODAY Sports sent a list of questions to Chris Haywood, the attorney representing Billups, asking him about the nature and origins of Billups’ alleged relationship with Stroud and whether Billups had any knowledge of any potential ties to organized crime in the alleged scheme. Heywood did not respond.

In a statement to ESPN on Oct. 23, Haywood called Billups a “man of integrity” and spoke of Billups’ accomplishments, reputation and freedom.

“He wasn’t going to jeopardize them for anything, let alone a card game,” Haywood said.

Police said Stroud shot and killed a man through the door of his Louisville home in March 1994 while he was gambling and playing cards, Louisville’s WAVE News reported. WAVE also reported that Stroud was stopped in 2001 for an expired tag when police found “what appeared to be sports betting cards, dice, playing cards, and gambling records” in his car.

In addition to being accused of organizing the fraudulent games, Stroud is also accused of providing much of the technology used in the fraud, and of committing a robbery at gunpoint to steal a fraudulent card shuffling machine.

USA TODAY Sports also sent a list of questions to Patrick J. Wren, the attorney representing Stroud, asking him about the nature and origins of Stroud’s relationship with Billups. Ren didn’t react either.

Assuming Billups was knowingly involved in the scheme, the final mystery is what, other than money, lured him in.

None of the experts interviewed for this article wanted to make definitive assumptions, but possible explanations include undisclosed financial hardship, blackmail, the thrill of risk, a desire to return to the competitive arena after retirement, or the possibility that he was misled about the seriousness of the alleged surgery.

So what options does Chauncey Billups have?

Mr. Billups is scheduled to appear in court in Brooklyn on November 24th. He has been asked to produce his passport and is prohibited from gambling or having contact with other defendants.

Experts interviewed for this article speculated that defendants would begin pursuing plea deals for immunity or more lenient sentences.

Due to the non-violent allegations against Mr. Billups and his clean criminal history, experts suggested that Mr. Billups should strongly consider a plea deal.

In January 2000, Billups settled a civil suit for an undisclosed amount stemming from a 1997 incident in which a woman claimed she was raped by Billups and former teammate Ron Mercer. No criminal charges were filed, but a rape kit test on the victim found injuries consistent with sexual assault, according to a police report.

If Mr. Billups feels he can prove his innocence in this case, another option would be to fight the charges in court, but that comes with significant risks. Lawyers representing Billups and the other defendants don’t know what evidence investigators have at this point, which only exacerbates the problem.

The general consensus among experts was that if federal investigators built a high-profile case, they would likely be confident of winning a conviction.

“It would be very embarrassing for the prosecutors if they got off,” Varese said. “If you go after very important people who have high status in the community and you put them through the system, you don’t want it to seem like you made a mistake.”

McDonald’s hits penny shortage, rounds cash transactions to the nearest pound

0

Add McDonald’s to the list of companies running out of pennies now that the U.S. Mint is no longer producing coins.

play

Are you feeling like you’re running out of business these days? McDonald’s.

Some stores and retailers, including Kroger, Home Depot and Kwik Shop, are starting to run out of pennies since the U.S. Mint paid out the last penny two months ago. Now, a penny shortage is hitting McDonald’s.

The company told USA Today that some McDonald’s locations in certain areas of the United States are experiencing a shortage of change and have begun rounding cash transactions up or down to the nearest nickel if a customer does not have change.

McDonald’s said in a statement: “Following the nationwide discontinuation of the penny, some McDonald’s locations may not be able to provide accurate change.” “We have a team actively working on long-term solutions to keep things simple and fair for our customers. This is an issue that affects every retailer across the country, and we will continue to work with the federal government for guidance on this issue.”

McDonald’s is short of pennies. So how are cash payments processed?

If a customer pays cash and has no change, the total purchase amount will be rounded up to 2 cents or rounded up to 2 cents. For example, if your lunch cost $12.06 and you didn’t have change and the restaurant didn’t have a penny, you’d be charged $12.05. If the meal was $9.39, the total would be rounded up to $9.40.

This rounding only affects cash payments. For example, the majority of McDonald’s transactions in the United States are made by credit card or other cashless payments made through the McDonald’s app.

Restaurants may require customers to use change or cashless payment options, the company said.

This rounding technique is not new and is also used in other countries where low denomination coins have been phased out, such as Australia, Canada and New Zealand. According to Money.com, some are rounded up and some are rounded down.

Why is there a penny shortage?

Strictly speaking, the United States is not short on pennies. Approximately 250 billion pennies are in circulation. But the American Bankers Association says there are “localized supply issues.”

The end of the penny comes after President Donald Trump told the Treasury Department in February to stop producing coins that cost more than 3 cents to produce. (According to the U.S. Mint, it costs 3.69 cents to manufacture.)

Now that the U.S. Mint has produced its last penny, about one-third of the Federal Reserve’s roughly 165 coin terminal facilities (where coins are distributed and deposited) are no longer trading in pennies, leading to some coin shortages, according to the ABA. The group said “supply issues” are likely occurring in some areas of the country where these terminals have taken pennies out of circulation.

Here’s why President Trump wants to end the filibuster and why his Republican allies love it

0

Democrats abolished the filibuster for executive nominees and lower court judges in 2013 to approve President Obama’s appointees, a move that also eased approval of President Trump’s nominees.

play

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump has called on the Senate to abolish the filibuster so he can pass legislation with a simple majority and end the government shutdown, but even fellow Republicans are reluctant to lay down arms to block controversial legislation.

President Trump pushed for changes that would allow a simple majority in the House and Senate, currently controlled by his own Republican Party, to approve his priorities. The end of the government shutdown has become more urgent as SNAP food benefits are scheduled to end on November 1st. That day, health insurance premiums for millions of people are skyrocketing under the Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare.

“It’s time for Republicans to play their trump card and implement the so-called nuclear option. Abolish the filibuster and abolish it now!” Trump wrote.

But many of his fellow Republicans appear to be fighting to block the rule change.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-South Dakota) told reporters he has no intention of abolishing the filibuster, even though it can be “frustrating at times.” His spokesperson confirmed on October 31 that his position remains unchanged.

“The filibuster serves an important purpose,” Thune said on the Senate floor in January, just days after President Trump was sworn in for a second term. “The filibuster serves to block frivolous or unconsidered legislation. It forces debate and compromise.”

Here’s what you need to know about why some people defend the filibuster, even in politically polarized times.

What is the Senate filibuster?

The crux of the controversy centers on Senate Rule XXII, which requires a 60-vote threshold to end debate. Previously, this threshold was more difficult to cross. Before the rules were changed in 1975, a two-thirds majority, or 67 votes, was required.

The movie version of the filibuster is similar to “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” where one senator keeps talking until he collapses. In recent examples, Democratic Sens. Jeff Merkley (Oregon) and Cory Booker (New Jersey) each took to the floor throughout the day to denounce the Trump administration’s policies.

But in practice, what this means is that a 60-vote majority is required to carry out nearly all Senate business. This is because even the simplest strategies, such as convening a bill or adjourning for the night, are subject to debate. One senator can force a vote that cannot be taken until two days later.

In the event of a government shutdown, Republican leaders are trying to send a House-passed bill to President Trump that would reopen the government until Nov. 21. But with only 53 Republicans and 47 Democrats, it would take a small number of Democrats to get a majority across the aisle.

One Republican, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, has opposed the bill every time it has been voted on in the Senate. But three other senators, Democrats John Fetterman of Pennsylvania and Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada, and independent Angus King of Maine, have consistently voted yes. So Republicans need five more Democrats to cross the aisle to approve the bill.

What is the “nuclear option”?

Congress’s move to abolish the filibuster has been dubbed the “nuclear option” because it is so egregious.

The process is possible by having Senate leaders call a vote and then asking lawmakers to rule on whether the filibuster is legitimate. If a majority votes to overrule a member, that sets a precedent for future votes. In this way, a simple majority can overcome a filibuster, which normally requires a 60-vote majority.

The late Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) used the maneuver in 2013 to eliminate the filibuster for executive nominees and lower court judges when he led the chamber. This cleared up confusion among Republican opponents of then-President Barack Obama’s nominee.

Republicans abandoned the filibuster on Supreme Court nominees in 2017 by invoking the nuclear option to confirm Justice Neil Gorsuch. The move also opened the court’s door to two other nominees to the high court during President Trump’s first term.

Some of President Trump’s nominees benefited from this change, winning the slimmest majorities in approval votes. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth was confirmed in January with Vice President J.D. Vance breaking the tie.

Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), the long-serving majority and minority leader, warned Reid in July 2013 that he would regret what he called “dangerous and far-reaching” changes.

“If the Republicans are making the nomination, they’re not even interested in what this means going forward,” McConnell said of Democrats on the Senate floor. “They wanted power, and they still want it. They don’t care about the consequences.”

Even Trump’s fellow Republicans oppose ending the filibuster.

Republicans oppose abolishing the filibuster, including Sens. McConnell and John Barrasso of Wyoming, Susan Collins of Maine, John Cornyn of Texas, John Curtis of Utah, James Lankford of Oklahoma, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Rand Paul of Kentucky, and Thom Tillis of North Carolina.

The nuclear option would fail if four Republicans joined Democrats in voting against ending the filibuster. Thun and Barrasso don’t even need to call for votes.

Longtime senators typically become the filibuster’s biggest defenders after serving in the minority.

“Power is ephemeral, and at some point there’s always going to be a reversal,” Cornyn said when Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), the majority leader under the Biden administration, was considering ending the filibuster.

Even Curtis, a relative newcomer, opposes abolishing the filibuster.

“The filibuster forces us to find common ground in the Senate,” Curtis said on social media on Oct. 31. “Power may shift, but principles should not. I am adamantly opposed to abolishing the filibuster.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana), whose chamber controls a simple majority, said both sides cherish the filibuster.

On Oct. 9, he told C-Span viewers that eliminating the filibuster “opens up Pandora’s box,” adding that if Democrats were to take control again, they could “raise taxes through the roof and take over everything.”

Pib is back. What you need to know about Coca-Cola’s rebranding.

0

Coca-Cola discontinued the Mr. Pibb brand in 2001 and replaced it with Pibb Xtra.

play

Mr. Piv is making a comeback.

The Coca-Cola Company announced on October 31 that it would reintroduce Mr. Pibb, 24 years after discontinuing the brand in favor of Pibb Extra.

The revived Mr. Piv will contain 30 percent more caffeine than Piv Extra, according to a news release. The soft drink also has a new tagline: “A Bold Kick of Cherry” with an “intense sweet cherry flavor with a hint of caramel and a lingering spicy finish.”

“When Mr. Piv first launched, the packaging didn’t tell consumers what it was. It told consumers what it wasn’t. It wasn’t Root Beer or Coke,” Coca-Cola Sparkling Flavors Director Dane Callis said in a news release. “It’s unique and original, a bold rebellion against normative categories. While nothing our fans know and love about Mr. Pibb is gone, we have taken steps to modernize the look to suit new consumer tastes and preferences.”

When will the rebranded Mr. Pibb be available?

Mr. Piv and Mr. Piv Zero Sugar are currently available in markets in Florida, Chicago, Las Vegas, Michigan and California, Coca-Cola said. The national rollout of the rebrand is expected to begin in early 2026.

Mr. Piv and Mr. Piv Zero will be sold in 12-ounce 12-packs and 20-ounce bottles, the company said. Mr Pibb is also available in 2 liter bottles.

Breakdown: How is Mr. Pibb different from Pibb Xtra?

In addition to having more caffeine, the revamped Mr. Piv has 10 grams more sugar and therefore more calories. Here’s how Mr Pibb differs from the Pibb Xtra currently available in stores.

If you can’t see the table in your browser, go to infogram.com/1pp9jez2xqdmenurgq7rmlyd0qhzlx37m9q.

When did Pib-san disappear?

Mr. Pibb was first introduced in 1972 as a competitor to Dr. Pepper. At that time, the soft drink was called Peppo. However, in the same year, Coca-Cola changed the brand name to Pibb after Dr. Pepper sued its parent company for trademark infringement.

In 2001, Coca-Cola discontinued the Mr. Piv brand and replaced it with Piv Extra. The improved soft drink was marketed as having a stronger cinnamon and cherry flavor than its predecessor.

Although the Pibb Extra name has remained for the past 24 years, Coca-Cola has recently begun using the “Mr. Pibb” name in marketing to gain support from the soft drink’s top fans.
