Amazon will lay off about 700 New York City-based employees as part of a company layoff of nearly 14,000 people.

The layoffs, first reported by Crain’s New York, were disclosed in a filing with the New York State Department of Labor. Amazon is laying off a total of 660 employees across nine offices in New York City.

The biggest cuts will affect Amazon’s Manhattan West office and New York Tech Hub, also based in Manhattan.

Amazon said in a statement emailed to USA TODAY on Tuesday, Nov. 11, that the job cuts are part of the company’s broader restructuring.

“All employees whose roles were eliminated (including in New York) were notified that day (October 28),” Amazon said.

Beth Galetti, Amazon’s senior vice president of people experience and technology, said in a memo to employees last month that the job cuts are aimed at making the company more efficient.

“We believe we need to have fewer hierarchies, more ownership, and organize more efficiently to act as quickly as possible for our customers and our business,” Galetti said.

Amazon also said affected employees have been given a 90-day notice period and “have access to lump-sum medical benefits, severance benefits, and free skills training.” We also provide employment support services to help you find your next job.

Supreme Court continues to suspend SNAP food benefits

play

WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court is staying out of the fight over the funding of food benefits for now, as Congress’s deal to end the federal government shutdown is likely to be approved.

The court said on Nov. 11 it would not immediately rule on an order directing the Trump administration to fully fund Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits during the government shutdown, and lawmakers said they could vote on it as soon as Wednesday.

The court put the district judge’s funding order on hold until Nov. 13, freezing the case without considering which side had the better legal argument.

Judge Ketanji Brown-Jackson, a Boston-based judge, had previously suspended funding deadlines for district judges.cent The U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals was considering it. The request went to Justice Jackson, who presides over emergency appeals in that part of the country, putting one of the court’s three liberal justices in the awkward position of granting a request from the administration on an issue of greatest concern to Democrats.

Still, in his latest order, Jackson disagreed with the majority’s decision to extend the suspension of all food stamp benefits.

The House is expected to vote Wednesday to reopen the government through Jan. 30 and provide year-round funding for several agencies and programs, including food assistance and veterans benefits.

The Justice Department argued that the lower court threw a “highly inappropriate new variable” into negotiations over the closure, causing confusion within the SNAP program itself.

“Congress appears to be on the verge of breaking the deadlock, but the outcome is uncertain,” Attorney General John Sauer wrote in the Justice Department’s appeal. “The district court’s unlawful order risks upending that compromise and calling into question how countless important federal programs will be funded.”

U.S. District Judge John McConnell in Rhode Island ordered the government to make full November payments to states by Nov. 7 using a combination of SNAP emergency funds and other funds.

The appeals court upheld McConnell’s ruling that the government’s concerns about using separate funds to cover SNAP shortfalls were outweighed by the risk that tens of millions of Americans would go without food.

Lawyers for the local governments, nonprofit organizations and others who sued the administration told the Supreme Court’s families there is no need to wait any longer for assistance.

“There is no good reason for the courts to intervene to prevent needed benefits from flowing to children, seniors, low-wage workers, veterans, and other people who rely on food,” the challengers wrote in response to the administration’s appeal.

The government’s argument that the judge’s order blocked negotiations for federal funds “simply confirms what has been clear all along: that the government is using SNAP to gain partisan political advantage in the shutdown fight,” they wrote.

Jacob Elordi is one of Frankenstein’s monsters. Who is the hottest?

In honor of Jacob Elordi’s sexy creature, we rank Frankenstein’s monsters in terms of spiciness. How would he fare against Emma Stone or Boris Karloff?

The Hollywood Institute has shown numerous Frankenstein films, as well as big-screen versions of Mary Shelley’s themes. And all these iterations resulted in Frankenstein’s monster of varying degrees of beauty.

In other words, whether it’s hot or not.

The latest addition to the canon has been praised for its looks. Jacob Elordi is a pretty good-looking guy in regular roles, and fans on social media are clamoring to see him play the creature in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein (now available on Netflix). One X user wrote that he was “that’s it”, while another confessed that he felt a “feminine thing” towards Elordi’s monster.

Shelley had sought to express bitterness in his original 1818 novel Frankenstein, but Victor Frankenstein “chose his features to be beautiful,” and del Toro and Elordi understood the task. Other similarly themed “creatures” in film history were a little more raw.

So which ‘Frankenstein’ movie are you swiping right on?Here’s how Elordi ranks with his peers in the film world, which range from horrible to wonderful.

15. Robert De Niro (Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, 1994)

oh yeah. This is a face only Frankenstein’s mother would love, and it comes together like an easy-to-assemble jigsaw puzzle using an industrial stapler. He has intelligence and eloquence, which helps.

14. Christopher Lee (The Curse of Frankenstein, 1957)

Lee didn’t have to do much when it came to her makeup, as the horror icon was naturally disturbing enough. His view of this monster is that of a blind English man who gets into an argument at the local pub.

13. Fred Gwynne (Munster, Go Home, 1966)

Frankenstein’s monster is the funniest of all, thanks in large part to its personality. So what if he had a forehead that defied gravity? Herman Munster was a devoted husband and father, drove a cool car, and wore nice platform shoes.

12. Shuler Hensley (Van Helsing, 2004)

Everyone in this action-packed Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale monster mash-up is oddly charming. This Frankenstein monster resembles a giant offensive lineman with great dad energy.

11. Peter Boyle (Young Frankenstein, 1974)

There’s a certain tenderness to Boyle’s baby-faced monster with male pattern baldness. What makes his character stand out in Mel Brooks’ classic comedy is that he gracefully dances to “Puttin’ on the Ritz” in a tuxedo.

10. Aaron Eckhart (“I, Frankenstein”, 2014)

Eckhart’s sci-fi horror hero Adam Frankenstein has some nasty scars, but mostly retains the actor’s rugged handsomeness. Moreover, our made man knows how to accessorize by combining a hoodie with a stylish overcoat.

9. Boris Karloff (Frankenstein, 1931)

Yes, he has a bolt in his neck and moans a lot. Sure, you might run away screaming on the first date. But that’s not too shabby, since this guy has one of the most iconic looks in pop culture history.

8. Emma Stone (Poor Things, 2023)

Vera Baxter’s corpse has been reanimated with a baby’s brain, so it doesn’t have the typical Frankenstein-like facial decorations. The initial infantility is strange, but she evolves into a very beautiful woman, all things considered.

7. Cole Sprouse (Lisa Frankenstein, 2024)

Literally a goth girl’s dream come true. In a feminist twist on Shelley’s story, Sprouse’s Creature is a gentlemanly undead Victorian man who is accidentally resurrected and is completely devoted to his “creator.” Fainted.

6. Jennifer Beals (The Bride, 1985)

“How many hearts will she break?” a character says about Beals’ character Eva in this gothic horror romance. That’s for sure, as the Flashdance star finds himself in a love triangle with Sting’s Baron Frankenstein and Clancy Brown’s Monster.

5. Johnny Depp (Edward Scissorhands, 1990)

Depp’s title character in Tim Burton’s gothic fantasy romance is a bizarre invention with a blade attached to his hand, but he can’t break through his leather wardrobe and deer-in-the-headlights façade. The other one is for the goth kids at home.

4. Kelly LeBrock (Weird Science, 1985)

A couple of hormonally affected teenage boys decide to channel their inner mad scientist and create the perfect woman. In the mid-1980s, it was LeBrock wearing a crop top. Good luck, young people.

3. Jacob Elordi (Frankenstein, 2025)

There’s a beautiful tragedy to Elordi’s performance as the creature in the latest reinvention of “Frankenstein.” And somehow, the various patchwork prosthetics end up accentuating the Australian actor’s leading role.

2. Peter Hinwood (The Rocky Horror Show, 1975)

Is Frankenstein’s monster your gym buddy? This works in the cult classic musical, where Tim Curry’s Dr. Frank-N-Furter is dressed as a ripped blonde guy who gets Charles Atlas’ stamp of approval.

1. Elsa Lanchester (The Bride of Frankenstein, 1935)

From her infamous electric hair and chef’s whoosh kiss to her perfect balance of sexy and scary, The Lanchester Bride is still, 90 years later, the kind of horror charm that most scream queens and final girls wish they were.

Handling fees and refunds for Delta Airlines, American Airlines, United Airlines, etc.

The record government shutdown may be nearing an end, but air travelers are still feeling the pain.

Continued flight cancellations and unfavorable weather in some parts of the country have compounded travel difficulties, leaving thousands of Americans anxious about their upcoming vacation.

As of Tuesday afternoon, more than 1,200 flights in and out of the United States had been canceled for the day, according to data tracking firm FlightAware. As of 11 a.m. ET, there were more than 1,700 delays.

The cuts come after Transport Secretary Sean Duffy announced on November 5 that flights would be cut by 10% at 40 major airports due to a shortage of air traffic controllers. Air traffic controllers are working without pay during the shutdown, and some do not come to work as it drags on.

Consumers are left scrambling to get to their destinations as major airlines such as United Airlines, American Airlines, Southwest Airlines and Delta Air Lines struggle with thousands of cancellations and delays. One silver lining amid the headaches is that most airlines are waiving fees typically associated with changing or canceling a trip.

Here’s what you need to know about how major carriers are dealing with disruption.

Airline closure fees including Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and American Airlines

Four major U.S. airlines (Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and American Airlines) canceled hundreds of flights to comply with the FAA’s reduction requirements.

Southwest Airlines canceled approximately 440 flights earlier this week from Monday, Nov. 10 to Wednesday, Nov. 12. United Airlines canceled 730 flights during the same period, and Delta Airlines cut approximately 495 flights. American Airlines cut about 420 flights from Monday to Tuesday.

Good news for stressed-out travelers? All four airlines have eliminated the usual fines and fees that apply to last-minute changes and cancellations, even for normally non-refundable tickets.

southwest airlines

Southwest Airlines carriers who booked flights through Thursday, Nov. 13 will be able to adjust their travel plans at no cost or receive a refund if they choose not to travel, even if their flights are not affected. Southwest said customers whose flights have been canceled will be notified and, in most cases, automatically rebooked and given the option to cancel or change.

If you have a reservation between November 7th and November 13th, you can rebook or wait to travel without changing your airfare. However, the new reservation must be between the same cities as the original reservation.

If you want to completely cancel your trip for the same duration, you can receive a full refund in your original payment method, even if the fare is normally non-refundable. The only condition? If you wish to cancel your reservation, you must do so at least 10 minutes before your flight’s scheduled departure time.

united airlines

United Airlines customers who booked flights between Nov. 6 and Nov. 13 will also receive a full refund if they choose not to fly, provided the original ticket was purchased by Nov. 4, 2025. This includes non-refundable tickets and basic economy tickets, which typically are not eligible for free changes, United said.

Those wishing to reschedule may do so without being charged a change fee or fare difference, but only if the new flight is between six days before and six days after the original travel date and the same cabin is booked between the same cities originally booked.

“For new travel on or after November 3, 2026, or to a different destination, change fees will be waived, but you may be required to pay a fare difference on some flights,” United said on its website.

delta airlines

Delta travelers who booked a flight between Nov. 7 and Nov. 16 can choose to cancel their reservation and receive a refund for the unflown portion of their ticket or an e-credit toward a future ticket purchase, according to a statement from Delta. This includes all fares, including basic Delta Main tickets.

The airline will also waive the fare difference for customers who rebook a new flight in the same cabin they originally booked by November 21st.

If you are unable to reschedule within this period, you may cancel your reservation and apply the unused value of your ticket toward the purchase of a new ticket within one year of your original ticket purchase.

american airlines

American Airlines said it has contacted affected customers and provided travel exemptions. American Airlines said in a statement that if a flight is canceled or a trip is canceled, travelers can request a refund or change their flight at no additional cost, even if the flight was not affected.

JetBlue Airways, Alaska/Hawaiian Airlines, Spirit Airlines and Frontier Airlines will follow suit.

Smaller airlines in the continental U.S. are following the lead of the Big Four and offering similar fee-free changes and cancellations.

Although smaller, Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines, operated by Alaska Airlines Group, serve hard-to-reach areas of the United States. The airline said it plans to cancel about 36 to 40 flights each day while operating about 1,500 flights each day.

JetBlue Airways, Spirit Airlines and Frontier Airlines have not disclosed specific numbers of canceled flights, but reports indicate fewer than 100 flights have been canceled.

jet blue

JetBlue Airways announced on November 10 that change and cancellation fees and fare differences will be waived for customers traveling on JetBlue-operated flights through Friday, November 14.

Customers whose flights have been canceled by JetBlue can either rebook on another JetBlue flight or receive a refund to their original payment method or as a travel credit. JetBlue says those who choose travel credits will also receive 2,000 TrueBlue points as a “thank you.”

Customers whose flights were not affected may rebook their flights for travel through Thursday, November 20, or cancel their flights prior to their originally scheduled flight departure time, at no additional charge.

Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines

Alaska Airlines said guests whose flights have been canceled will be contacted by the appropriate airline and, in most cases, automatically rebooked. If you do not receive such a notification, your flight will not be affected.

Customers whose flights are canceled by Thursday, November 13 will be rescheduled to another available flight or receive a full refund. The state of Alaska announced it has issued a “flexible travel policy” that allows customers to make changes without penalty.

spirit airlines

Low-cost carrier Spirit is also offering free rebookings or full refunds to customers whose flights have been canceled despite the economic hardship. Spirit said customers on affected flights will receive a notification using the contact information provided when booking.

frontier airlines

Frontier similarly issued a “Flexible Travel Policy” for customers affected during the FAA’s flight reduction plan.

If your flight is canceled or delayed for at least 3 hours for domestic flights or 6 hours for international flights, you can request a rebooking or refund without penalty. Origin and destination cities must be the same between reservations, and if you cancel your trip without any associated delays or cancellations, you will be refunded in a travel credit.

Should drivers warm up their cars before driving in cold weather?

0

play

As frigid temperatures blanket large swaths of the country, auto experts are debunking long-held myths about driving in cold weather.

AAA, a federation of auto clubs, recommends that drivers start their engines and let their cars idle for as long as it takes to fasten their seat belts. This time ensures that lubricating oil reaches all important parts of the engine.

The Environmental Protection Agency says that leaving your car idling not only causes unnecessary engine wear but also causes air pollution and wasted fuel. According to AAA, driving your car normally and avoiding sudden acceleration will help your engine warm up faster than leaving it idling for several minutes.

But experts warn that older cars and electric vehicles may need extra care before hitting the road.

How the car warm-up routine started

According to Carfax, this warm-up process began decades ago when cars were more likely to stall in extremely cold environments.

Until the 1980s, cars were equipped with a carburetor, a component that regulates the mixture of air and fuel in the engine, Carfax said. At that time, it made sense to heat your car in the winter. That’s because it could take several minutes for the right mixture to reach the engine, or the car risked stalling or sputtering.

Carfax said modern cars use electronic fuel injection instead of carburetors. This system helps quickly deliver the right air and fuel mixture so the vehicle is ready to hit the road within seconds, even in cold temperatures.

“Unfortunately, certain habits are difficult to break and misinformation is rampant,” Carfax said. “If you owned an older model and sold it later, those habits may have been passed on to the next generation.”

EV exception

While most internal combustion engines don’t require warming up, EV owners may need to take some action before hitting the road, even though many people would prefer a warmer car.

According to Car and Driver, batteries tend to perform best at around 70 degrees. As temperatures drop, battery performance decreases, with some owners reporting a 10% to 20% drop in range when temperatures drop below freezing.

EV owners are encouraged to precondition their vehicle using the phone app associated with their vehicle to heat the battery and interior to operating temperature. The Department of Energy said this work is best done with the vehicle connected to power to ensure the battery is fully charged and the cabin is warmed to optimize performance.

“If your EV does not have preconditioning capabilities, warming up the vehicle for several minutes before driving will improve battery performance,” the DOE said. “And guess what? Unlike gasoline-powered cars, EVs don’t emit harmful fumes when you run them in your garage or on the road.”

Lawmakers face final big hurdle to end government shutdown: On a flight to Washington, D.C.

0

One Republican chose to drive nearly 1,000 miles in the cold on his motorcycle instead of risking his flight being canceled or delayed.

play

WASHINGTON – Congress itself has a good old chicken-and-egg problem in coming out of the government shutdown.

Speaker Mike Johnson needs enough House members to return to Washington by Wednesday night to vote on reopening the government.

The problem: All members of Congress may not be able to return to Washington, D.C., in time for their duties due to widespread travel issues caused by the government shutdown.

For nearly two months, many House members have been living in their districts while the Speaker has kept them away from Washington and their day job voting on legislation. This pressure tactic was aimed at forcing Democratic senators to return to power without major concessions from Republicans.

By Sunday, when senators reached a bipartisan agreement to end the historic crisis, nearly half of domestic flights had been canceled or delayed.

It didn’t take long for Johnson to change his marching orders.

“We need to start by getting back on the Hill now,” he said in a message to lawmakers Monday morning. “We have to do this as soon as possible.”

Lawmakers choose to carpool or ride bikes

One Republican lawmaker was so worried about his flight being delayed that he chose to drive his motorcycle about 950 miles back to the nation’s capital instead of going all the way to the airport.

Congressman Derrick Van Orden left his home state of Wisconsin on Monday night for a nearly 15-hour voyage in subzero temperatures.

“Derrick, you might be wondering why you’re riding a Harley-Davidson when it’s 32 degrees outside,” he said in a video posted to social media from somewhere along the Mississippi River. “The planes are so unreliable because they shut down the government, the Democratic Party.”

“It’s going to be a little cold,” he said.

Republican Rep. Rick Crawford of Arkansas and Rep. Trent Kelly of Mississippi decided to carpool back to the nation’s capital.

“8 hours left!” Crawford posted on social media Tuesday just after 2 p.m. At this point, more than 2,000 flights within and outside the United States were delayed, according to data tracking firm FlightAware. At one point, more than 1,2000 people were canceled.

Airports in New York City, Chicago, Atlanta and Washington, D.C. bore the brunt of Tuesday’s chaos.

Flight cuts are already hurting lawmakers.

Flight delays have already disrupted Congressional proceedings during the government shutdown.

Even after lawmakers agreed to end the shutdown Sunday night, the chamber did not adjourn until after 11 p.m. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), the lone yes vote, was still getting off the plane in Virginia as other senators cast their votes. He blamed the Democratic Party for his tardiness.

Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) told reporters in recent weeks that two flights were diverted at the last minute, something she had never seen before in her decades-long career as a Congresswoman.

What Target’s new 10-4 policy means for employees and customers

0

play

The company said its target customers will soon be seeing more smiles and likely exchanging more pleasantries with employees thanks to new staff policies the company has introduced.

The new policy requires employees who are within 10 feet of customers to smile, make eye contact, wave and use friendly, approachable and welcoming body language, the Minneapolis-based retailer told USA TODAY on Monday, Nov. 10.

When staff are within 4 feet of a customer, they must greet the guest directly, smile and begin a warm and helpful interaction, Target said.

The requirements are part of a program called 10-4. The program is one way Target is trying to improve the shopping experience, the company told USA TODAY.

Target said the company wants to make customers feel like they are truly appreciated guests.

Adrian Costanzo, Target’s executive vice president and chief store officer, said the company has done a great job thus far in creating a great in-store experience for customers.

“We know when our guests feel welcomed, welcomed and have the support they need, which leads to their love and loyalty,” Costanzo said in a statement to USA TODAY. “As we head into the holiday season, we are leveraging our teams to adjust and implement new ways to increase connectivity during the most important time of the year.”

The company did not say when the policy would go into effect or whether employees would face disciplinary action if they do not follow the policy.

“We have work to do to reach our full potential,” the incoming CEO said in August.

Target said the new policy is also consistent with incoming CEO Michael Fidelke’s goals for the company.

Target announced in August that its board of directors had unanimously elected Fidelke to serve as CEO, effective February 1, 2026. The company said Fidelke has been part of Target Brands for 20 years, working in merchandising, finance, operations and human resources.

The company said he is advocating for investments in pay and benefits for its team members.

“My background with the company has also given me a deep sense of responsibility for where Target goes next, and I approach this role with an urgent determination to drive growth and deliver better results,” Fidelke said in August. “Let me be clear: we have work to do to reach our full potential. Now is the time to maximize our strengths, embrace change with pace and purpose, and regain momentum.”

How are your employees reacting?

Some Target employees took to Reddit to voice their opinions about the policy, with several pointing out that customers should be greeted anyway.

“Whatever we’re (supposed to) be doing anyway, but still,” Reddit user Ziglet_249 wrote. “I truly believe I was promoted to guest status at the right time. Yesterday was my last day in this system. I am officially (retiring).”

Another user, Odd-Face-3579, suggested that the reason for this policy is because Target employees don’t smile enough on their own because of what it’s like to work there.

“The problem isn’t that smiling is a job requirement (although forcing a verbal greeting from a four-foot height is a problem, if you ask me). The problem is that if your employees aren’t smiling at guests, it’s probably because they’re terribly unhappy. If you improve things to make your employees happy, you probably don’t need to announce new plans to mandate happiness,” Odd-Face-3579 wrote.

This user added that he goes to work every day trying to be nice and nice to his customers, but the customers make it difficult and don’t respond or acknowledge them at all.

“No eye contact, no nods, no noises, literally invisible at best and annoying to people at worst,” the user shared. “And that’s before you realize how bad it’s going to be for your guests, just completely destroying the aisles these days. It’s really demoralizing.”

Donald Trump talks about Pat McAfee Nick Saban talks about the future of college sports

0

play

ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show” on Nov. 11 was filmed live from the Marine Corps Depot at Parris Island, South Carolina, on Veterans Day. So the commander called.

President Donald Trump also participated in the program and touched on many topics including college sports. He was asked if he thought former Alabama coach Nick Saban would be an option to improve college sports.

“I know him and we got to know him because he brought his team to the White House,” Trump said. “He’s won a lot and I’ve gotten to know him. You know he’s a great guy and someone who should really be involved in college sports in terms of making sure everything works out. You know, it’s a shame that a lot of the minor sports in college, for most people, are going to be completely abolished, and a lot of those training grounds are disappearing.

“And, you know, Nick knows this better than anyone. He will, and he’s been really proactive about this. I think they should give Nick Saban a good, hard look at this. And we all, from my standpoint, I’m going to listen to Nick. I know him very well and he’s a great guy and what a great coach.”

Trump’s vision for college football

Trump’s vision for college sports is more in line with the Senate bill proposed by Democrats. The SAFE Act is a sweeping bill that would require the Federal Trade Commission to oversee college sports. This is the polar opposite of the Republican-sponsored SCORE bill in the House, which would provide antitrust exemptions to the federal government for establishing and enforcing rules related to NIL, player transfer, and eligibility.

The SAFE Act also provides an extension of the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961 to college sports, allowing conferences to pool media rights to increase revenue and fund all sports. The SAFE Act ensures that all sports are funded and are not eliminated due to lack of funding.

In a follow-up, McAfee asked the president about the NIL and the big business of college sports and its sustainability.

“I think everyone understands that players are worth paying for and the value of players, but I think a real market with guardrails would be really good,” McAfee said. “This could be something, along with preventing wars and tariffs and building up $17 trillion. We might as well keep it on the table.”

“Well, this is a very serious problem, because even in football, where you give quarterbacks $12 million, $13 million to $14 million, all of a sudden it’s going to spin out of control,” Trump said. “And even the rich universities are going to fail because they can’t do this. And you know, they give out scholarships the old-fashioned way and they’ve done a lot of good things, but maybe they can pay for it somehow.

“But when they start bidding on expenses, look, the NFL and every league has a cap. There’s no such thing in college sports. A 350-pound guard comes along and he’s phenomenal, and that’s the difference between great teams and terrible teams. They gave him $10 million when they say that’s the difference. It’s going to start happening right away. All of a sudden you’re going to have NFL-like salary numbers. I don’t care, no matter how rich the college is, it’s not going to make that much money. Even the most successful universities cannot do this.

“Unless we fix this, bad things are going to happen. That’s why guys like Nick Saban, I’m working with Nick right now, guys like Nick Saban and other guys are coming together because they have to do something. Universities can’t afford that. And what they’re doing, I don’t want to use certain sports because it’s degrading, but they’re actually a lot They’re trying to eliminate sports, you know, what you would call minor sports. But the big sports, they’re being squeezed out even though there’s a lot of interest in the great sports, and frankly, even though college football is so big, if you don’t have a really strong cap, no matter how wealthy the universities are, they’re going to go under.”

First Lady Melania Loved Her ‘Little Office’, President Trump Talks About Demolition of East Building

“You know,” President Trump said. “If you ask her now, she’ll say it’s great.”

play

WASHINGTON – Melania Trump loved her “tiny little self” White House office.

But like the rest of the East Wing, it had to be removed to make way for the ballroom, her husband said.

“She loved her tiny little office and she loved it, but you know what?” President Donald Trump said in an interview on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle.” “She’s very smart. After about a day, she’s like, ‘Wow, if you ask me now, she’s amazing.’

President Trump’s dismantling has come under heavy criticism from his wife’s predecessor as well. Former first ladies Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton ridiculed the construction plan. So is Chelsea Clinton.

President Melania Trump has not publicly commented on the demolition of the East Tower, which traditionally houses the first lady’s office space.

Her second-floor office overlooked the South Lawn and Jacqueline Kennedy Gardens. It was located near the White House’s social, calligraphy, and military offices. The White House addition, built in 1942, was demolished last month to make room for a banquet hall.

President Trump said the building was “a beautiful little building built many years ago, but it has been renovated, expanded, torn down, the columns pulled out” and it has become a “poor, sad place” that is not ideal for building a ballroom.

The first lady currently works on the first floor of the building, which includes the Vermeil Room, China Room, and White House Library. The area is currently off-limits.

Tours of the White House have previously included these rooms, but will take a different route when they reopen on December 2nd.

play

Many restaurant chains across the United States are offering food sales and discounts to veterans and active-duty military on Tuesday, November 11th in honor of Veterans Day.

Chains like Texas Roadhouse, Applebee’s, Chipotle, Krispy Kreme, and Starbucks are offering deals especially on November 11th. Most Veterans Day sales require a veteran, military, or military-dependent identification document (such as a Veterans ID card or a DD214 card showing time served). There are also many benefits exclusive to dine-in customers. Be sure to contact your local location to confirm participation.

According to Chick-fil-A’s website, each restaurant is owned and operated by a local franchise owner, so available discounts are “at the discretion of the owner-operator and vary by location.” The company said some local restaurants may choose to offer free meals, sandwiches or discounts in honor of Veterans Day and other holidays, but this is not guaranteed at all locations.

“Please check with your local Chick-fil-A restaurant for hours of operation and holiday discounts through the Chick-fil-A app, the restaurant’s social media pages, or by contacting us directly,” the Chick-fil-A website says.

Origin of Veterans Day

According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the origins of Veterans Day, a federal holiday, date back to November 11, 1918, when the Suspension of Hostilities, or armistice, between the Allies and Germany went into effect at 11 a.m. on November 11.

“November 11, 1918 is therefore generally regarded as the end of the ‘war to end all wars,'” according to the agency’s website. Veterans Day is still observed on November 11th, regardless of the day of the week.

When Armistice Day became a federal holiday in 1938, many states had already begun celebrating it. In 1954, Congress, with support from veterans organizations, changed the name of the holiday to Veterans Day. President Eisenhower signed the bill on June 1, 1954, according to History.com.

The purpose of the day is “a celebration honoring America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and service and sacrifice for the common good,” the Department of Veterans Affairs says on its website.

Senate approves closure agreement. The next House to vote. live updates

WASHINGTON – The Senate approved a deal Monday night to end the longest government shutdown in history, putting Congress on the brink of resolving a weeks-long battle that has grounded flights and halted food stamps for millions of Americans.

The Senate voted 60-40 to sign off on a deal agreed by a group of Democratic senators and eight Republicans that would reopen the government until January 30. The continuing resolution now goes to the House, where it is scheduled to be considered on Wednesday after the Veterans Day holiday.

The bill is expected to win enough votes to pass in the Republican-controlled House, but most Democrats are likely to vote against it.

The government shutdown lasted 42 days. In a concession to Democrats, the continuing resolution would reverse President Donald Trump’s recent federal workforce cuts amid the government shutdown, but it would not extend expiring Affordable Care Act aid, which Democrats have been demanding for weeks.

Instead, the bill simply guarantees a single vote on health care subsidies in December, before the credits expire at the end of the year and health insurance premiums skyrocket. It’s unclear whether there is enough Republican support for extending ACA subsidies for the bill to pass in the Senate, and Speaker Mike Johnson has not committed to holding a vote in the House.

The eight Democratic defectors in the Senate are facing widespread criticism from within their own party for bowing to President Trump’s shutdown threat. There are also calls for Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer to resign from leadership, citing his inability to maintain order in the caucus despite voting against the deal.

President Trump calls closed voting a ‘huge victory’ for Republicans

President Donald Trump congratulated Republican leaders at a Veterans Day ceremony Tuesday on a shutdown deal expected to reopen the federal government.

“Congratulations to you and (Senate Majority Leader John Thune) and everyone on a very big victory. We’re opening up the country. It should never have been shut down. It should never have been shut down,” Trump told House Speaker Mike Johnson in a speech at Arlington National Cemetery.

The Senate passed a bill to reopen the government on Monday. It could pass the House as early as Wednesday afternoon if the House reconvenes for a vote.

Government shutdown bill would allow eight senators to sue with phone subpoenas

The compromise plan to reopen the government includes a provision that would allow senators whose phone records were subpoenaed during the Justice Department’s investigation into election interference to sue the government for up to $500,000.

Special Counsel Jack Smith subpoenaed the phone records of Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Sens. Marsha Blackburn and Bill Hagerty of Tennessee, Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri, Sen. Dan Sullivan of Alaska, Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama, Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, and Sen. Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming during the investigation of President Donald Trump.

None of the senators were indicted. Mr. Smith dropped the charges when Mr. Trump was elected president for a second time, based on a long-standing department policy that prohibits prosecuting sitting presidents.

This bill would waive the government’s immunity from litigation against subpoenas. The Senate Judiciary Committee recently unveiled the subpoena.

But Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Connecticut, criticized the provision on social media on Nov. 11 as “outrageous” and a way for President Trump to “write multi-million dollar checks” to senators who get rich on “taxpayer money.”

The bill was introduced after President Trump sued the government for $230 million for a similar investigation.

The House could vote to reopen the government as early as Nov. 12 at 4 p.m.

The House could begin voting as early as 4 p.m. on Nov. 12 to reopen the government and approve the bill for President Donald Trump to sign.

The House has been on the road since before the government shutdown began on Oct. 1, waiting for the Senate to approve temporary funding to reopen the government. On November 10th, the Senate passed a funding patch through January 30th.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) told lawmakers to return to the Capitol by Nov. 12, when the chamber reopens at noon.

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) informed lawmakers that multiple votes are expected and the first vote could occur as early as 4 p.m. The House of Representatives often votes on motions, such as whether to postpone or reconsider controversial bills, before voting to finalize them.

President Trump said Monday that he supports a Senate deal brokered between Republican leaders and eight Democratic senators to reopen the government.

“Based on what I’m hearing, they haven’t changed a thing,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Monday. “And with support from enough Democrats, we’re going to reopen the country.”

President Trump said, “We’re sorry to have to close, but we’ll reopen soon.”

The deal, which must be signed by President Trump, would reverse his recent layoffs of federal workers during the government shutdown, and the president has indicated he agrees to it.

President Trump said, “We will abide by the agreement. The agreement is a very good one.”

The Senate-passed agreement would reopen the government through Jan. 30 and cover year-round funding for several agencies and programs, including food assistance and veterans benefits. SNAP funding will continue at a high level through September.

It also includes a promise to vote on legislation that could extend expired Obamacare subsidies. Tax credits, which millions of Americans rely on to help pay their insurance premiums, are a central issue in the shutdown fight.

Additionally, the agreement cancels layoffs for thousands of federal workers and prohibits potential layoffs until January 30th. The layoffs have been temporarily blocked by a federal court.

President Trump on Monday promised $10,000 bonuses to air traffic controllers who worked without pay during the shutdown and threatened to cut pay for those who did not report to work.

“All air traffic controllers must get back to work now!!!” President Trump said on social media on November 10. “Those who don’t will be effectively ‘suspended.'”

Many air traffic controllers continued to work without pay during the shutdown. But other airlines refused and did not notify airports across the country, so the Federal Aviation Administration ordered airlines to cancel 4% of their flights over the weekend.

President Trump told Fox News on Monday night that he did not know where the money for the bonus would come from. “I don’t know. I get it from somewhere. I always get paid from somewhere.”

A small number of Senate Democrats support a compromise plan to reopen the government, but it is unpopular with fellow left-wing leaders.

“Entering this agreement is illegal,” New Jersey Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill said in a statement.

“Pathetic,” California Governor Gavin Newsom wrote in a one-word post about X.

And most Senate Democrats balked at compromise.

“We cannot support an agreement that still leaves millions of Americans with questions about how they will pay for their health care and whether they can afford to get sick,” said Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.).

The McRib will return to McDonald’s menu in 2025. Click here for details.

McDonald’s is bringing the McRib sandwich back to the menu in select markets.

McDonald’s says the much-loved sandwich is available at select restaurants in areas in cities including Atlanta, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, Seattle and St. Louis.

The announcement comes after the sandwich began appearing in some markets last week, the McRib Locator website reported.

Back on the menu: McDonald’s holiday pies will return to menus nationwide on Friday, November 14th.

When can I buy the McRib?

Some people can now get the McRib. Restaurants currently offering sandwiches include cities on McDonald’s list, including Atlanta, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, Seattle and St. Louis. McDonald’s recommends checking availability at local restaurants.

What is the McRib?

A McRib is a pork patty shaped like a rack of ribs, served in a bun with barbecue sauce, pickles, and onions. Therefore, the ribs are not involved. The McRib is made with pork, water, salt, glucose, and (this wasn’t on my bingo card) rosemary extract.

The McRib debuted in Kansas City, Kansas in 1981 and became available nationwide the following year. McDonald’s executive chef Rene Arend, who invented Chicken McNuggets in 1979, is credited with inventing the McRib based on the development of reconstituted meat for military use by University of Nebraska professor Roger Mandigo.

McDonald’s has periodically brought the McRib back on the menu since removing the sandwich from its permanent menu in 2005. Re-appearances were held in 2020 and 2022 under the title of “Farewell Tour.” The McRib then returned to menus at select locations in 2023, and nationwide last year.

McRib calories and nutritional information

Here are the restaurant chain’s nutritional details for McDonald’s McRib (percent daily intake based on a 2,000 calorie diet):

  • calorie: 520 (26% of daily value)
  • Total fat: 28g(35%)
  • Total carbohydrates: 46g (17%)
  • protein: 24g (48%)

Big Ten Tony Petiti sells soul to private equity

0

The strange and brazen story of the Big Ten’s financial escape.

play

I don’t have the time or the wherewithal to deal with the internal machinations that have run away from Big Ten finances. So let’s start with the obvious.

Is Tony Petiti trying to kill the Big Ten all by himself?

Just when you thought it couldn’t get worse than the last time, when a conference commissioner asked players to run two seasons in nine months during a global pandemic, the commissioner of the conference that ruined the Big Ten’s reputation with something called the Alliance before leaving for the NFL has decided to put his tenure as Big Ten commissioner on hold for allowing Wolf to pass.

Wolf of Private Equity.

Folks, I point out fiscal stupidity. The Big Ten is the richest and most financially secure of all conferences, and by far the most desperate to jump into bed with private equity in exchange for a piece of each school’s precious and ever-growing media rights.

And jumping into bed means selling that soul.

Because those private equity sharks were once the entire reason for its existence – how can you say that? — To make money above all else, If we were allowed one foot in the door, the Big Ten as we know it would cease to exist. One foot turns into another, and then another, and before you know it, a shark is swimming in what was once an oasis.

And for what? How to win the game?

You see, if the 16 Big Ten athletic teams that receive full media royalties can’t survive on the projected $75 million in fiscal year 2025 (which increases each year through the length of the contract through 2030), then more than 100 FBS schools are eager to take on the challenge. That includes Oregon State and Washington State, recent Big Ten additions that have been phased in financially through the media rights agreement process.

I mean, what’s going on in the Ten Years’ War?

Herein lies the problem with Mr. Petiti’s ending. He’s trying to do so in the midst of one of the most dramatic changes in the history of college sports, capitalizing on both the distraction from an ever-evolving framework and the desperation of member schools that don’t yet know how to confront this unruly beast.

If you think about it, that’s quite a manipulation.

These universities, which had to deal with former commissioner Kevin Warren convincing their presidents that the SEC was the boogeyman and were here for the money, which is why they had to destroy the Pac-12 and a completely imperfect college football framework by proxy, now have a commissioner who continues to make inexplicable moves that are not in the interest of the legendary conference.

Want more money? Expand the playoffs to 16 teams and earn more media rights fees from television partners, as the SEC and other FBS conferences want.

Want more money? I look at the millions of dollars given to Oregon and Washington. They were added to the league because some idiot decided to take USC and UCLA without thinking twice. And they realized that two schools, often three time zones away from the conference venue, needed a travel partner.

In the words of my best Deshaun Foster, “We’re, uh, in Los Angeles.”

Los Angeles.

The best part of Petiti’s shell game is that it took USC and Michigan, the only rational-thinking members of an ascetic and boring conference, to sharpen the gears and slow the move to run the conference off a fiscal cliff.

The Big Ten calls the proposed $2.4 billion deal with the Devils a “plan.” Because this plan has been analyzed and scrutinized, and it sounds like a reasonable structure. It sounds like someone wins and someone loses, not an agreement.

As simply as possible, and again without getting into all the weeds, let me explain who is winning and who is losing. If each university’s board of governors tries to pass this agreement without understanding the details, they could find themselves in a bind.

The fact that some schools are using their presidents and athletic directors to approve this agreement is grossly reckless. University presidents are hired to raise funds, and athletic directors are hired to spend the funds.

Oh my god, this can’t be real.

The Big Ten reported $928 million in revenue last year, and USA TODAY Sports predicts that revenue will jump to $1.2 billion to $1.4 billion in 2025. 1 billion, with B.

The Big Ten doesn’t have a revenue problem, it has a budget problem.

And then there’s Mr. Petiti, who has branched out to private equity sharks whose sole purpose in life is to make deals that benefit them. They’re not just giving you $2.4 billion out of good intentions.

And they’re not doing it without influence, intentional or not. They do this because they are catching big fish that are hungry and need to be fed.

No matter how many souls it takes.

How Moonshot AI beat GPT-5 and Claude at a fraction of the cost

0

Chinese AI startup Moonshot has upended expectations in artificial intelligence development after its Kimi K2 Thinking model outperformed OpenAI’s GPT-5 and Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 4.5 on multiple performance benchmarks, sparking a new debate about whether U.S. AI dominance is being challenged by cost-effective Chinese innovation.

Beijing-based Moonshot AI (valued at $3.3 billion), backed by tech giants Alibaba Group Holding and Tencent Holdings, released its open source KimiK2 thinking model on November 6, achieving what industry insiders are calling a new “deep-seeking moment.” This is a reference to the Hangzhou-based startup’s previous smashing of AI cost assumptions.

Performance indicators become a challenge for the US model

According to the company’s GitHub blog post, Kimi K2 Thinking scored 44.9% on Humanity’s Last Exam, a large-scale language model benchmark consisting of 2,500 questions across a wide range of subjects, beating GPT-5’s 41.7%.

The model also achieved a score of 60.2% on the BrowseComp benchmark, which assesses the web browsing proficiency and persistence of information exploration of large-scale language model agents, and led with a score of 56.3% on the Seal-0 benchmark, which is designed to compete with search expansion models on real-world research queries.

venture beat We reported that fully open-weight releases meeting or exceeding GPT-5 scores mark a tipping point in high-end inference and coding, where the gap between closed frontier systems and publicly available models has virtually collapsed.

Questions arise about cost efficiency

The model gained popularity after CNBC reported that its training cost was only US$4.6 million, but Moonshot AI would not comment on the cost. According to the calculation by South China Morning PostThe cost of Kim K2 Thinking’s application programming interface was 6 to 10 times lower than the cost of models from OpenAI and Anthropic.

The model uses an expert mixture architecture with a total of 1 trillion parameters, 32 billion of which are activated for each inference, and trained using INT4 quantization, achieving an approximately 2x generation speed increase while maintaining state-of-the-art performance.

Thomas Wolf, co-founder of Hugging Face, commented on X that Kimi K2 Thinking is another case of the open source model overtaking the closed source model, asking, “Is this another DeepSeek moment? Should we now expect it every few months?”

Technical capabilities and limitations

Moonshot AI researchers say Kimi K2 Thinking has set “new records across reasoning, coding, and benchmarks assessing agent capabilities.” The model can perform up to 200-300 consecutive tool calls without human intervention and makes consistent inferences over hundreds of steps to solve complex problems.

In independent testing by consultancy Artificial Analysis, Kimi K2 topped the Tau-2 Bench Telecom agent benchmark with 93% accuracy, which is said to be the highest score independently measured by the company.

However, Nathan Lambert, a researcher at the Allen Institute for AI, acknowledged that Chinese labs have come close and performed very well on key benchmarks, but suggested that there is still a lag of about four to six months in raw performance between the best closed and open models.

Market impacts and competitive pressures

Zhang Ruiwang, a Beijing-based information technology system architect, said Chinese companies tend to keep costs down. “The overall performance of Chinese models still lags behind top American models, so they need to compete in the cost-effectiveness area to find a way out.”

Zhang Yi, principal analyst at consulting firm iiMedia, said the cost of training AI models in China has seen a “cliff-like decline” due to innovations in model architecture and training technology, and input of high-quality training data, marking a shift away from the vast computing resources of the early days.

This model was released under the modified MIT License, which grants full commercial and derivative rights, with one restriction. Deployers that serve more than 100 million monthly active users or generate more than $20 million in monthly revenue must prominently display “Kimi K2” on their product’s user interface.

Industry reaction and future outlook

“Today is a turning point in AI. China’s open source model is number one. A defining moment in AI,” wrote Deedy Das, a partner at early-stage venture capital firm Menlo Ventures, in a post on X.

Nathan Lambert wrote in a Substack article that the success of Chinese open source AI developers like Moonshot AI and DeepSeek shows how they have “made closed labs sweat,” adding, “There are serious pricing pressures and expectations that[US developers]have to deal with.”

This release positions Moonshot AI alongside other Chinese AI companies such as DeepSeek, Qwen, and Baichuan, which are increasingly challenging the narrative of American AI dominance through cost-effective innovation and open source development strategies.

Whether this represents a sustainable competitive advantage or a temporary convergence of capabilities remains to be seen as US and Chinese companies continue to evolve their respective models.

The public nature of the statement and the market reaction suggest that substantive discussions may begin soon.

The AI chip landscape is in a period of flux. Organizations should maintain flexibility in their infrastructure strategies and monitor how partnerships like Tesla and Intel reshape the competitive dynamics of AI hardware manufacturing.

Decisions made today regarding chip manufacturing partnerships could determine which organizations have access to cost-effective, high-performance AI infrastructure in the years to come.

Utah judge rejects Republican congressional map, gives Democrat victory

0

In 2026, Democrats can take control of the U.S. House of Representatives by simply flipping three seats held by Republicans last year.

play

WASHINGTON, Nov 11 (Reuters) – A Utah judge has thrown out a new U.S. congressional map passed by the Republican-led Legislature in favor of an alternative plan likely to give Democrats back one of the state’s four House seats in next year’s midterm elections.

In a ruling late Monday night, District Judge Deanna Gibson said the congressional map is an “extreme partisan outlier” that illegally gives an advantage to Republicans. The plan developed by Republicans would split Salt Lake County, home to most of the state’s Democrats, in half.

Mr. Gibson chose one of two alternative maps proposed by voting rights groups that sued over the map, both of which would have created Democratic-leaning districts centered around Salt Lake County.

Her decision comes amid a nationwide battle over redistricting that began when Texas redrawn its congressional maps at the behest of President Donald Trump in an effort to flip five Democratic seats. California voters, by contrast, overwhelmingly approved the state’s new maps for five Republican incumbents last week.

Other Republican- and Democratic-led states have also created or are considering creating new maps. Manipulating district lines to benefit one political party, known as gerrymandering, is not new, but redistricting typically only happens once every 10 years, when the Constitution requires states to redistrict based on the decennial U.S. Census.

In 2026, Democrats can take control of the U.S. House of Representatives by simply flipping three seats held by Republicans last year.

In Utah, Mr. Gibson ordered lawmakers in August to draw new maps after finding that Republicans had illegally repealed a voter-approved referendum to establish an independent redistricting commission.

But she agreed with voting rights groups Monday that the resulting plan, backed by Republicans, remains gerrymandered and intolerable.

“Based on the evidence presented, the court finds that Map C was drawn to benefit the Republican Party,” she wrote.

Candice Pierucci, a Republican state representative who helped lead the legislative map, called the decision “a clear example of judicial activism” against X.

“This ruling is a victory for all Utahns who believe voters, not politicians, should decide who represents them,” Democratic U.S. Rep. Susan DelBene, chair of the party’s national legislative campaigns division, said in a statement.

Introducing a 7-year car loan. How much will your ride be worth in 2032?

0

play

More new car buyers are taking out seven-year loans, a trend that highlights the rising cost of car financing.

Auto loans with terms of seven years or more accounted for 22% of all new car loans in the third quarter of 2025, near an all-time high, Edmunds reported.

The average new car customer borrowed $42,647 in the third quarter at an annual interest rate of 7%, with an average monthly payment of $754. Today, nearly one-fifth of new car buyers pay at least $1,000 a month.

Auto loans have steadily gotten longer in recent years as buyers try hard to keep up with rising prices. These days, car buyers seem to have just as many financing options as home buyers.

Home values tend to go up, but car values tend to go down.

The Trump administration launched its 50-year mortgage initiative on Nov. 9, touting it as a way to lower monthly payments.

However, a car and a house are completely different assets. Homes tend to appreciate. Most cars depreciate.

“It’s not money that’s coming back. It’s not capital that’s in the car,” Brian Moody, executive editor of Kelley Blue Book and AutoTrader, told USA TODAY earlier this year.

Another worrying trend is that many cars are depreciating in value faster than borrowers can repay their loans. You end up owing more than the car is worth, a predicament known as being “under water,” or having your loan upside down. The longer the loan, the greater the risk of slipping into the water.

The old rules of thumb for car buying, known as 20/4/10, were to make a 20% down payment, limit your loan to four years, and spend no more than 10% of your monthly income on transportation.

A few decades ago, three- or four-year car loans were the norm.

Five-year terms were “kind of a sweet spot” for auto loans in the early 2000s, Joseph Yun, a consumer insights analyst at Edmunds, told USA TODAY in an interview earlier this year. Yun’s own family took out a five-year loan in 2004.

“Now, 20 years later, the sweet spot seems to be six years. Many people are choosing seven years or more,” Yun said.

According to a report from Edmunds, only 10% of new car buyers currently choose to finance their car for four years or less.

The average price of a new car in September was $50,080, a record high, according to Kelley Blue Book.

Meanwhile, interest rates soared. The average interest rate on a five-year new car loan rose from 5% in August 2020 to 7.6% in August 2025, according to Federal Reserve data.

The longer your loan, the lower your monthly payments will be.

Car buyers typically choose longer loan terms because the longer the loan term, the lower the monthly payments. Dealer negotiations often focus on finding the right monthly payment amount, rather than the minimum selling price or interest rate, because it’s easier to understand.

“The only reason you would extend your loan term by seven or eight years is because you went to the dealership with a certain budget in mind, chose a car, and the salesperson or finance person came up with a number that you couldn’t afford,” Yun said.

However, the length of your loan has a significant impact on the interest you pay, which can drive up the total cost of your transaction.

Below is an example of a $40,000 car loan with a 7% interest rate, provided by Consumer Reports.

For a four-year loan, your monthly payments will be a hefty $958, but your total interest over the life of the loan will be capped at $5,977.

Extend your loan up to five years and reduce your monthly payments to $792. However, you would now be paying $7,523 in interest.

For a six-year loan, your monthly payments would drop to $682, but interest would increase to $9,101.

With a seven-year loan, your monthly payments will be $604. And now you’re paying $10,711 in interest.

“Yes, monthly payments are important,” Yun said. “But with interest rates this high, you’re paying five-figure interest on a six-year loan, seven-year loan, eight-year loan.”

“Underwater” loans are on the rise

Long-term loans at high interest rates are pushing more customers into the lurch.

Edmunds said a quarter of customers who traded in a used car for a new car in the last three months of 2024 owed more than their trade-in value. Trade-ins have substantially increased the price of new cars.

“If you want to trade it in and it’s underwater, that’s going to be a problem,” Consumer Reports monetary policy advocate Chuck Bell told USA TODAY in an interview earlier this year.

For used cars, the numbers can be even worse.

The average used car sold in August 2025 already had 72,557 miles on it, Cox said.

A typical five- or six-year-old car has already lost more than half of its value through depreciation. If you finance an aging car for another seven years, “halfway through the loan, your car will have no value,” Yun says.

Here are some questions to ask before taking out a seven-year car loan from experts.

Can I make a larger down payment?

The less you spend on your car, the less money you’ll need. With a larger down payment, buyers may be able to afford the monthly payments on a short-term loan.

The down payment “goes straight to your bottom line,” Bell said.

Can you afford to pay those payments for seven years?

Before taking out a seven-year car loan, consider how your monthly payments will impact your annual budget, including your home payment, other debts, and unexpected expenses.

Will you still own the car after seven years?

With a seven-year car loan, there’s a big risk of owing more than the car is worth. However, if you plan to keep the car until the loan is paid off, the negative equity will eventually disappear.

“If you want to keep the car for a long time, it doesn’t really matter in the end,” Yun says.

More flights were canceled. FAA expands cuts amid bad weather. live updates

U.S. travelers saw a glimmer of hope with the federal government’s promise to reopen, but with mandatory flight cancellations and continued severe weather in parts of the country, the coming days could remain dire for travelers.

As of early Tuesday, more than 1,100 flights in and out of the United States had been canceled for the day, according to data tracking firm FlightAware. As of 7 a.m. ET, there were nearly 600 delays.

The percentage of flights mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration to be cut was initially expected to increase from 4% to 6% at 40 major airports on Tuesday, the first increase that will see the cuts fully expand to 10% by Friday. It’s unclear if or when a newly passed Senate budget to reopen the federal government and end weeks of unpaid work for air traffic controllers will impact the planned cancellations.

Thousands of flights have been cut since Transport Secretary Sean Duffy last Friday ordered cancellations to begin Nov. 7. The travel woes worsened on Monday as more flights were grounded due to a winter storm in the Chicago area.

Airports in New York City, Chicago, Atlanta and Washington, D.C. had the most flight cancellations and delays Tuesday morning, according to FlightAware.

By about 9:30 a.m., the airport facing the most problems was Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Delta’s main hub, with 27 delays and 29 cancellations. A total of 73 delays and 45 cancellations affected travelers at New York’s regional airports.

In addition to government-mandated flight reductions, Chicago has also experienced flight cancellations due to winter weather, with 18 delays and 26 cancellations as of Tuesday morning.

The forced flight reductions affect 40 airports and airlines across the country, but have primarily reduced services through regional partners, meaning flights between large hubs and smaller cities and towns are most likely to be affected, disrupting the entire system. The impact could extend into the Thanksgiving holiday.

“Typically, when a storm occurs, one airline can restore operations within 48 to 72 hours after the weather event ends, and that’s when one hub is affected,” said Tiffany Funk, co-founder and president of travel tech company point.me. “This is unprecedented and it’s storm season. I don’t think we’ll see a similar recovery. Airports will come online at different rates, meaning airlines won’t be affected in the same way.”

Airlines for America, the industry’s main trade group, warned that “more than 3.5 million passengers have experienced delays or cancellations due to air traffic control staffing concerns since the shutdown began,” calling the situation “unsustainable,” with a record 31 million passengers expected from Nov. 21 to Dec. 1.

The House could begin voting as early as 4 p.m. on Nov. 12 to reopen the government and approve the bill for President Donald Trump to sign. The House vote is the next step in reopening the government and begins the process of getting air transportation back on track.

The Senate passed a resolution on November 10th to provide funding through January 30th. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) told lawmakers to return to the Capitol by Nov. 12, when the chamber reopens at noon. Multiple votes are expected. The House of Representatives often votes on motions, such as whether to postpone or reconsider controversial bills, before voting to finalize them.

The government shutdown is expected to end, but travelers should prepare for delays and cancellations in the coming days.

Tiffany Funk, co-founder and president of point.me, which specializes in points-based travel, said: “We can expect some very bumpy operations and a pretty tough travel experience, at least through this week.” “Even if funding magically came back today, it would take a long time to reset this.”

Experts said the longer flights are canceled or grounded, the longer it will take to recover, and the pace of recovery may vary by airport and airline. Air traffic controller duties may require long working hours and overtime, and it may not be possible to return to work fully immediately.

Meanwhile, Ahmed Abdelghani, associate dean for research at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s David B. O’Malley School of Business, advised travelers to stay informed of flight status through airlines’ mobile apps and websites and to arrive at the airport “well in advance” in case of long waits at security. He said if flyers are able to travel at another time, it’s worth considering rebooking options or taking out travel insurance that will cover some of the cost if something goes wrong. If you don’t need to travel right now, consider postponing your trip.

Before the government shutdown, the country’s air traffic control system included just under 11,000 fully certified controllers, 30% fewer than the government needed. This means air traffic controllers are already required to work overtime six days a week, up to 10 hours a day, and vacation time is severely limited.

Nick Daniels, president of the National Association of Air Traffic Controllers union, said in a statement: “This situation is a significant distraction for individuals who already work in an extremely stressful job.” “The economic and emotional strain increases risk within the national airspace system, making it less safe with each continued closure.”

Becoming a certified air traffic controller requires years of training, typically starting at the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City, followed by several years of closely supervised on-the-job training.

Air traffic controller applicants must meet vision and health standards, undergo a mental health evaluation, and undertake a high-stakes, high-stress job physically separated from the travelers they serve each day. They must be prepared to respond to midair fires, hijack reports, or medical emergencies at 36,000 feet or just a few feet from the terminal.

President Donald Trump on Monday threatened to cut pay for air traffic controllers who don’t report to work and proposed giving bonuses to air traffic controllers who continued working during the shutdown.

Last week, the FAA reported that between 20% and 40% of air traffic controllers were absent from work on any given day during the shutdown. Some looked for other jobs to earn a living.

“I’m not happy for you,” Trump said of air traffic controllers who stayed home from work.
