Jimmy Kimmel breaks down in tears remembering Cleto Escobedo

0

The late-night host is “heartbroken” over the loss of her childhood friend and is trying to remember “how lucky I was to have had him literally by my side for so many years.”

play

Jimmy Kimmel has had an emotional year. First, Charlie Kirk’s show was canceled following his comments about his death. Then his resounding reply.

But on Nov. 11, he spoke heartfeltly to the audience about the death of bandleader Cleto Escobedo. Escobedo, 59, was more than just a musician and colleague, he was Kimmel’s best friend since childhood.

The two grew up as neighbors in Las Vegas in the 1970s and quickly became inseparable. “Cleto taught me all the dirty things,” Kimmel joked, recounting stories including a “fuss-out” with a friend in the car and a trip to a novelty shop in Las Vegas where Escobedo returned with a pocket full of what looked like a large rubber penis.

“We had a lot of adventures. We had a lot of laughs. We had our own language,” the late night host said. “We loved the same things: baseball, fishing, boxing, (Muhammad) Ali, Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Woody Allen, Michael McDonald, Huey Lewis, Stevie Wonder, and most of all, David Letterman.”

Kimmel talked about how Escobedo was a “phenomenal saxophone player” who followed in his father’s footsteps. A few years ago, the elder Cleto Escobedo gave up his career because he didn’t want to miss out on traveling and raising his family. His son, Cleto III, eventually played professionally, touring with Paula Abdul and landing a record deal. When the album did not do well, he returned to tour and performed with the band in local bars.

And in 2002, Kimmel hosted a talk show. “When you do a show like this, you need a few things: you need a desk, you need an announcer, you need Guillermo, you need a band,” he said. “And of course I wanted Cleto to lead the band.” He also wanted something else. It was for Cleto’s father to take part in it.

But Kimmel was worried about pitching the idea to networks. The pitch to hire the saxophonist’s best friend from elementary school didn’t sound all that convincing. “But that is had He set up an audition and told Escobedo to bring in his father, who hadn’t played in over 20 years. Officials at the network liked their performance “and have worked with them almost every day for 23 years,” Kimmel said.

“I’ve often said that the best thing about doing this show was picking up where Cleto Sr. left off and having the opportunity to be a musician again with my son,” he said.

Kimmel teared up when talking about this and pointed out Cleto’s mother, Sylvia, in the audience. They were his “second parents,” he explained. “I’ve known these guys since fourth grade. In 47 years, these guys have never yelled at me,” he joked. He also mentioned Cleto’s wife Lori and their children Jesse and Cruz. “I wish as my kids grow up I could remind them how much he loved them, because that’s a lot,” he said, almost sobbing.

Escobedo’s cause of death has not been announced, but Kimmel thanked the doctors and nurses at UCLA Health who treated the saxophonist with “incredible care” and his family and friends who supported him “through these terrible months.”

The monologue also included some laughs, including memories of the pair’s habit of swearing at people and how Escobedo would repeatedly “pull down his pants” on set as a joke.

“Take care of your friends, we’re not going to be here forever,” Kimmel reminded the audience before announcing that the show would be taking “a few more nights off.”

A geomagnetic storm arrives and auroras cover North American skies

0

play

On Nov. 11, a powerful geomagnetic storm reached the atmosphere and sparked the aurora borealis, lighting up the skies over much of North America (as far south as Florida) with bright colors.

The Space Weather Prediction Center warned that the strong event could impact power grids and communications, and that some GPS signals may be disrupted on Wednesday, November 12 as the event continues. It may also mean a night when colors dance in the sky on the northern horizon.

As the sun set on November 11, social media feeds quickly filled with colorful photos.

Magnetic storms occur when coronal mass ejected from the Sun’s surface reaches the Earth’s atmosphere. The eruption that sparked the bright activity on Nov. 11 spewed out of the sun earlier in the week, according to the Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colorado.

Atmospheric storm levels reached G4 (severe) levels at 8:20 p.m. ET on Nov. 11, and are expected to continue into the night, said Sean Dahl, a space weather forecaster at the center.

What is the cause of the “Aurora”

According to the prediction center, a coronal mass ejection (a jet of solar material and a strong magnetic field from the sun’s sunspots) occurred on November 9 and November 10, and a solar flare occurred on November 11.

Auroras can be seen in the south when the sun spews out particularly large coronal clumps.

When the material reaches the Earth’s atmosphere, it can cause magnetic storms. One release reached the atmosphere on November 11th.

“I still don’t believe the third CME has arrived yet,” Dahl said. The third is expected to arrive around noon on Wednesday, November 12th.

The first two were “much stronger than we expected,” Dahl said. He added that his next sending off was the strongest and most energetic of the three.

As for other effects, Dahl said people using high-precision GPS systems should be aware of potential signal degradation. “When you need an accuracy of less than an inch, the continuation of this type of activity can lead to errors much larger than that.”

Dahl said he has been in touch with the space launch industry, power grid officials and the highest levels of the White House to keep them informed of the situation.

According to the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, the colors seen beyond the horizon are caused by the interaction of incoming solar particles with various types of gas molecules in the atmosphere above the Earth. Interaction with oxygen produces green and red light. Nitrogen produces blue and reddish hues.

Dahl said that to cause more intense activity, the magnetic field passing through must be opposite to Earth’s magnetic field.

Photos of lights were posted from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas and Minnesota.

Northern lights seen in Florida and throughout the United States

Interview with Tucker Carlson and Nick Fuentes exposes MAGA anti-Semitism rift

0

In recent weeks, Mr. Carlson’s friendly conversations with white supremacists have created a rift among Republicans and sparked drama at major think tanks.

play

Conservatives are divided over anti-Semitism after prominent conservative media figure Tucker Carlson interviewed Nick Fuentes, an influential white supremacist on the fringes of the Make America Great Again movement.

The backlash sparked a dramatic staff revolt at one of the prominent conservative think tanks and a rare in-house criticism from leading Senate Republicans.

Fuentes has used his vast internet footprint to spread racist and extremist views for years, including telling Alex Jones in 2021 that Jews and other non-Christians have no place in Western civilization. In a friendly conversation with Fuentes, Carlson did not confront Fuentes about these past statements, nor did he refute when Fuentes said during an interview that Jews are not loyal Americans.

Fuentes argued that “the main challenge to unifying the country was an organized Jewry in America.”

Those sentiments have been criticized by some Republicans, including Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, who accused Carlson of holding Fuentes to task during the segment.

“If you sit down with someone who says that Adolf Hitler was very, very cool, that their mission is to fight and defeat world Jewry, and you don’t say anything, you’re a coward and you’re complicit in that evil,” Cruz said.

Mr. Carlson’s interview with Mr. Fuentes came on the heels of at least four recent incidents in which Republican officials have associated Nazi symbols and ideology, including reports of members of the Young Republican Party joking about gas chambers. These include the Trump administration dropping a candidate for having “Nazi tendencies,” the discovery of a swastika inside an American flag in the office of a Republican lawmaker, and the revelation that an online neo-Nazi influencer is married to a Republican lawmaker from her home state of Michigan.

An October 30 editorial in National Review, a leading conservative magazine, condemned Carlson Fuentes’ interview, saying, “An America that is no longer safe for Jews to live in and has been taken over by anti-Israel fanatics is not the America that conservatives want to live in.”

From alt-right extremists to dining with Trump

Fuentes, 27, rose to prominence on the far right during his freshman year at Boston University when he first became known as the pro-Trump host of a conservative YouTube channel called “America First.” He became famous for attending the 2017 “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, where white supremacists chanted “Jews will not replace us,” referring to the racist, anti-immigrant “Great Replacement” theory.

He has since amassed millions of followers on X and around 500,000 followers on video-sharing platform Rumble. Rumble streams podcasts aimed primarily at Gen Z men who flock to reactionary voices online.

Fuentes had an audience with President Trump at Mar-a-Lago in 2022 when he dined with Kanye West, a world-famous rapper who has made similar anti-Semitic comments.

But more than any recent event, his two-hour roundtable discussion with Carlson on Oct. 27 (which has racked up nearly 6 million views on YouTube) introduced Mr. Fuentes to a new audience.

“Tucker Carlson has long played a role in the MAGA media as someone who legitimizes and brings extremists into the fold,” Matt Gertz, a senior researcher at the left-wing watchdog group Media Matters, told USA TODAY.

“He’s functioning as a sensemaker, and when he entertains someone like Nick Fuentes, he’s introducing it to a large audience, especially the younger Republican staffers who really listen to what he has to say.”

Carlson has also been accused of promoting far-right ideology and conspiracy theories even before parting ways with Fox News, where he hosted the highest-rated prime-time show until 2023. This includes the Great Replacement, in which elite liberals, especially Jewish liberals, are systematically replacing America’s white majority with immigrants of color.

Carlson’s interview with Fuentes has sparked a major rift among Republicans, conservative commentators and advocacy groups over whether Fuentes’ rejection of the platform constitutes the “cancel culture” that the left has long denounced.

Heritage Foundation launched as relationship between Fuentes and MAGA evolves

The rift began with the involvement of Kevin Roberts, president of the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank that created the blueprint for President Trump’s second term Project 2025. Carlson has a long-standing relationship with Heritage, having given the keynote speech at the organization’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2023.

Roberts posted a two-minute video after the interview in which he said he did not intend to criticize the host and accused Carlson of criticizing him as a member of the “globalist class.” The American Jewish Committee says, “Globalist is a code word for Jews who are considered part of the international elite.”

Roberts later backed down, but five members of Heritage’s anti-Semitism task force resigned in protest, and two others left the organization: scholar Chris Demas and former Trump adviser Stephen Moore.

“We have zero tolerance for anti-Semitism,” Andy Olivastro, the Heritage Foundation’s chief advancement officer, said in a Nov. 7 message that a Heritage spokesperson shared with USA TODAY. “It is evil and we will always confront it head on.”

Mr. Fuentes had previously been rejected by mainstream conservatives. In 2023, Fuentes was expelled from the Conservative Political Action Conference for his comments. “Hateful and racist remarks and actions” and was denounced by the Republican National Committee.

But in a fragmented media landscape, Fuentes and other voices espousing more extreme views on race and gender have gained a foothold with key right-wing figures like Carlson.

“The Heritage Foundation is afraid of Tucker Carlson and his audience,” conservative New York Times columnist David French said in an Oct. 30 post on X. “The fringe is now the mainstream, and one of the most powerful organizations on the American right is bending the knee.”

Young conservatives have lower support for Israel

Part of what’s causing the rift is that support for Israel among young American conservatives is significantly less than it used to be, due to the MAGA populism injected into the Republican Party.

A Pew Research Center study released in April found that Republicans under the age of 50 were about equally likely to have positive or negative views of foreign allies. Over the past three years, negative views of Israel among young Republican voters have jumped from 35% to 50%, the survey found.

Although President Trump is a staunch supporter of Israel, including participating in the bombing campaign against Iran in the summer, those attracted to the president’s nationalistic “America First” rhetoric are less sympathetic towards Israel.

Now, pro-Trump isolationists are competing for supremacy with the more hawkish, Christian evangelical wing of the Republican Party, which has strong pro-Israel leanings, with the support of the online public.

Carlson, who did not respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment, dismissed critics of the interview earlier this month, telling fellow former Fox News host Megyn Kelly that these naysayers do not control his show.

“You’re not my editor,” he said. “Please turn off the buzzer.”

Since leaving Fox News, Carlson has increasingly used his platform to criticize the president’s response to the Iran-Israel conflict, calling Trump “complicit in acts of war” in a newsletter. His June showdown with Cruz went viral after he slammed the senator about Iran.

Speaking at the Federalist Society’s 2025 National Bar Conference this month, the former Republican presidential candidate, a Texas congressman and staunch ally of Israel, said it would be easy for Republicans to censure Fuentes.

But Mr. Cruz called attention to how few people are questioning Mr. Carlson in the same way.

“I can tell you that my colleagues think what’s going on is horrible,” Cruz said of the uproar at the Nov. 8 press conference. “But (Carlson) has such a huge megaphone that a lot of his colleagues are scared.” He is a top candidate.

The current rift on the political right highlights the dilemma conservatives felt after the assassination of 31-year-old Charlie Kirk in September, when some Republican politicians sought to censor negative speech about the slain conservative activist.

Pro-Israel conservative commentator Ben Shapiro acknowledged on the Nov. 5 episode of his popular podcast that there is a “split” on the political right.

He described Fuentes as “disgusting and despicable,” but ruled out trying to ban him or others from expressing their opinions on any platform.

“Drawing moral lines between viewpoints is not cancellation,” Shapiro, who is Jewish, said on his popular podcast.

Security flaws emerge amid global AI race

0

According to Wiz, competition among AI companies has led many companies to ignore basic security hygiene practices.

Of the 50 largest AI companies analyzed by a cybersecurity firm, 65% had leaked verified sensitive information on GitHub. Leaks include API keys, tokens, and sensitive credentials, often buried in code repositories that go unchecked by standard security tools.

Salt Security’s UK&I country manager, Glyn Morgan, explained that this trend is a fundamental error that is preventable. “If an AI company accidentally releases its API key, it exposes an obvious security flaw that could be avoided,” he said.

“This is a textbook example of governance combined with security configuration, two of the risk categories that OWASP flags. Pushing credentials into a code repository gives attackers a golden ticket to systems, data, and models, effectively bypassing normal layers of defense.”

The Wiz report highlights the increasing complexity of supply chain security risks. This issue extends beyond your internal development team. As companies increasingly partner with AI startups, they may inherit their security posture. The researchers warned that some of the breaches they discovered “may have exposed organizational structures, training data, and even private models.”

The financial stakes are considerable. The combined valuation of the companies identified and analyzed for leaks exceeds $400 billion.

This report focuses on companies listed in the Forbes AI 50 and provides examples of risks.

  • LangChain was found to have exposed multiple Langsmith API keys, including one with permission to manage an organization and list its members. This kind of information is highly valued for reconnaissance by attackers.
  • It was discovered that Eleven Labs’ enterprise tier API key resides in a clear text file.
  • An anonymous AI 50 company had published HuggingFace tokens in a code fork that has since been removed. This single token “grants access to approximately 1,000 private models.” The same company also leaked the WeightsAndBiases key, exposing “many private model training data.”

Wiz’s report suggests that this problem is so prevalent that traditional security scanning methods are no longer sufficient. Relying on a basic scan of a company’s major GitHub repositories is a “commoditized approach” that misses the most significant risks.

Researchers describe this situation as an “iceberg” (i.e., the most obvious risks are visible, but the greater dangers are “below the surface”). To find these hidden risks, the researchers employed a three-dimensional scanning technique they called “depth, perimeter, and extent.”

  • Depth: Their deep scan analyzed “complete commit history, commit history across forks, deleted forks, workflow logs and gist,” areas that most scanners “never touch.”
  • Perimeter: The scan has expanded beyond the company’s core organization to include organizational members and contributors. These individuals may “inadvertently check company-related secrets into their public repositories.” The team identified these adjacent accounts by tracking the code poster, the organization’s followers, and “correlation among related networks such as HuggingFace and npm.”
  • coverage: The researchers specifically looked for new AI-related secret types that traditional scanners often miss, such as keys for platforms like WeightsAndBiases, Groq, and Perplexity.

This expansion of the attack surface is particularly concerning given the apparent lack of security maturity in many rapidly changing enterprises. The report notes that when researchers attempted to disclose leaked information, nearly half of the disclosures failed to meet their targets or did not receive a response. Many companies either had no formal disclosure channels or simply failed to resolve the issue when notified.

Wiz’s findings serve as a warning to enterprise technology managers, highlighting three immediate action items to manage both internal and third-party security risks.

  1. Security leaders must treat employees as part of the company’s attack surface. The report recommends creating a version control system (VCS) member policy that is enforced during employee onboarding. This policy should mandate practices such as using multi-factor authentication for personal accounts and strictly separating personal and professional activities on platforms like GitHub.
  1. Internal secret scanning must evolve beyond basic repository checks. The report calls for companies to require public VCS secret scans as a “non-negotiable line of defense.” This scan should employ the “depth, perimeter, and coverage” mentality mentioned above to find threats that lurk below the surface.
  1. This level of oversight needs to be extended throughout the AI supply chain. When evaluating or integrating tools from AI vendors, CISOs should examine their company’s confidentiality management and vulnerability disclosure practices. The report notes that many AI service providers are leaking their proprietary API keys and should “prioritize discovery of proprietary secret types.”

The central message for enterprises is that the tools and platforms that define next-generation technologies are often being built at a faster pace than security governance. Wiz concludes: “For AI innovators, the message is clear: Speed must not come at the expense of security.” The same warning applies to the companies that rely on their innovations.

Ruby Rose blames Sidney Sweeney for poor box office performance of ‘Christie’

play

Ruby Rose claims Sidney Sweeney’s performance is the reason her new film Christie is the worst-grossing movie of all time.

The sports biopic, which stars the “Euphoria” star on screen as pioneering professional boxer Christy Martin, debuted with $1.3 million after its Nov. 7 release, according to Box Office Mojo. It ranks 12th on the list of worst wide openings among films released in over 2,000 theaters, and 9th when excluding rereleases.

In a threaded post on Monday, Nov. 10, the Orange Is the New Black alum blamed Sweeney for the lack of success of the film, which centers on an openly lesbian former boxing pro, and also revealed that she was originally in talks to star in the film.

“The original Christy Martin script was amazing. It changed my life,” Rose wrote. “I was obsessed with playing Cherry. Everyone was going through the main material. Most of us were actually gay. That’s part of the reason I continued acting. Losing a role happens all the time.”

USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for Sweeney and Rose for comment.

The “Batwoman” actor, who is also openly lesbian, slammed Sweeney’s comments following news of the box office flop. Sweeney reflected on how “proud” it was to tell Martin’s story, adding, “We don’t always make art for the numbers, we make it for the impact. Christie is the most impactful project of my life.”

“When her publicist talks about the failures and says the SS did it for the ‘people’. No ‘people’ want to see people who hate them parading around pretending to be us,” Rose continued.

In August, after a controversial jeans ad campaign with American Eagle, The Guardian reported that Sweeney was registered as a Republican voter in Florida, months before President Donald Trump won a second term in the White House.

“You’re a cretin and you’ve ruined the movie. I totally get it,” Rose concluded. “Christy deserves better.”

What does Christy Martin say about Sidney Sweeney?

Martin praised his portrayal of Sweeney in the biopic. Martin said at the Toronto Film Festival on September 5, “I’m actually very shy, very reserved, and I want to help everyone if I can. In the boxing world, I wanted to knock everyone out. So there are those two parts of my personality. And I think that’s why Sydney Sweeney does such a great job, because she was able to become a completely different person that no one expected.”

Regarding Sweeney’s role, Martin added that Sweeney “wasn’t the beautiful, sexy Sydney. In this movie, she was the tough, strong Christie, which I think is great.”

On Monday, Nov. 10, Sweeney shared a behind-the-scenes photo on Instagram, saying she was proud to tell Martin’s story.

“This film represents survival, courage and hope. Through our campaign, we have helped raise awareness of the many people affected by domestic violence. We all signed on to this film believing that Christie’s story can save lives,” she said.

Sidney Sweeney calls President Trump’s reaction to controversial jeans ad ‘surreal’

Rose’s post comes in the wake of controversy surrounding Sweeney’s American Eagle jeans ad campaign. In an interview with GQ published on Nov. 4, the 28-year-old actor finally commented on the reaction to the American Eagle ad, which critics called tone-deaf and offensive.

Sweeney said she was surprised by the reaction, but said she had distanced herself from much of the chatter due to her busy filming schedule for “Euphoria.” She also said it was “unreal” to see both President Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance commenting on her commercial.

On August 3, after a reporter revealed Sweeney’s political affiliation, Trump called the ad “amazing.”

The Emmy-nominated actress and her July ad faced intense scrutiny because it played on the homonyms of “genes” and “jeans.” In the commercial, Sweeney says, “Genes are passed from parent to child and often determine traits such as hair color, personality, and even eye color.” The commercial also touted that Sweeney “has great jeans.”

“When I have an issue that I want to talk about, people will listen,” she told GQ. She said the situation “didn’t affect me either way” because “after all, I knew what that ad was for, and it was great jeans.”

Chick-fil-A has confirmed that it will be testing two new chicken and waffle sandwiches in two markets.

Some restaurants in Baltimore will be testing the Chicken & Waffles Breakfast Sandwich and Chicken & Waffles Sandwich, while some San Antonio restaurants will be testing the Chicken & Waffles Breakfast Sandwich, the company said in a Nov. 11 email to USA TODAY.

The test period will run from December 1st to January 24th, and will end when supplies last.

A Nov. 5 Facebook post from the Westminster, Maryland, restaurant described the “Chicken & Waffle Sandwich” as “crispy chicken sandwiched between warm maple waffles and a dollop of smoked bacon.”

The post and shared image states that both original chicken and spicy chicken are available. The breakfast version looks a little small in the image, but it’s served until 10:30am.

Chicken and waffle sandwich to be announced after holiday menu returns

The test announcement comes on the heels of the chicken sandwich seller’s return to its holiday menu.

Chick-fil-A added several peppermint-flavored products starting November 10, including Peppermint Chip Milkshake, Peppermint Chip Frosted Coffee, Peppermint Iced Coffee, and Iced Dream with Peppermint Bark Chips. Chicken tortilla soup and 30 pieces of nuggets were also added.

In addition to the seasonal menu, Chick-fil-A also launched holiday products on November 10th. These products include themed wrapping paper, sauce gift boxes, apparel, and more.

Why ‘massive power outage’ calls for cancellation of Black Friday

0

play

A coalition of grassroots groups is calling for a nationwide economic shutdown during the busy holiday shopping season, including Black Friday and Cyber Monday, to protest the Trump administration and economic inequality.

Blackout the System, The People’s Sick Day, American Opposition, The Money Out of Politics Movement, and The Progressive Network called on Americans to stop all spending and refuse to go to work during a “massive blackout” that will run from November 25th to December 2nd.

Avoid travel and restaurants, and cancel streaming and digital subscriptions, organizers said. “If you must spend, please only support local small businesses. Please pay in cash.” Small Business Saturday, Nov. 30, will be exempt from the power outage.

Each group in the coalition had been calling for a shopping boycott independently, but they decided to work together.

“We live in a political system dominated by special interests, where billionaires and corporations make the rules,” Blackout the System founder Isaiah Rucker Jr. said in a statement. “Congress serves donors, not the American people, and the norms of democracy are being dismantled before our eyes with the help of corporations. This campaign is about showing, with the American people, where the power truly lies.”

Carlos Álvarez Alaños, founder of the American opposition party, told USA TODAY that the coalition is “nurturing the power of Americans toward boycotts and blackouts as a way to leverage economic power,” with the ultimate goal of leading a general strike.

“We don’t see this battle as left versus right. Rather, we see it as top versus bottom,” Álvarez-Aranhos, who helped organize the “No Kings” protests and the Tesla boycott, said in an interview. “This is the story of Black Friday, because, frankly, what we’re seeing is just unsustainable. We’re being taken advantage of. Prices are going up. Inflation is through the roof.”

The boycott targets the year-end sales season.

Several national boycotts targeting the holiday shopping season are underway.

People’s Union USA, a grassroots organization that advocates for “economic resistance, corporate responsibility, and real justice for the working class,” is implementing Black Friday and Cyber Monday blackouts from November 28 to December 5.

The ‘Full Week of Economic Resistance’ urges shoppers to avoid big retailers and businesses and instead support local and independent businesses. John Schwartz, founder of the American People’s Union, asked his followers on Instagram to “remember we are the economy.”

Grassroots groups like Black Voters Matter, Indivisible, and Until Freedom are calling on shoppers to boycott major retailers like Amazon, Target, and Home Depot, which they say have caved to President Donald Trump and reneged on their pledges to support diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.

We Ain’t Buy It, a national economic pressure campaign, wants shoppers to support retailers that stand up to Trump, as well as black, minority and immigrant-owned businesses and local small shops, rather than patronizing retailers that have supported Trump.

Are shopping boycotts effective?

Big retailers are increasingly embroiled in the nation’s culture wars as shoppers of all political persuasions wield their wallets to make their beliefs known at the register and on social media.

A pressure campaign accusing Cracker Barrel of succumbing to “wokeness” and distancing itself from its roots and conservative values has forced the company to scrap plans to sport its classic vintage logo of a man wearing overalls leaning on a barrel. Walmart, Ford, Harley-Davidson, and Tractor Supply have also scaled back their DEI efforts in response to consumer pressure.

The target has been met with grief from both ends of the political spectrum. In 2024, the Minneapolis-based retail giant will scale back its Pride collection and remove it from all stores. Sales fell this year due to a nationwide boycott over the company’s withdrawal from DEI.

A new study on the Tesla boycott suggests that billionaire and former Trump DOGE Secretary Elon Musk’s “polarizing and partisan” political activities alienated the electric car maker’s customer base, costing the company more than $1 million in U.S. car sales from October 2022 to April 2025.

But will a power outage work?

Boycotts that ask shoppers not to patronize stores during power outages may not be as economically effective as sustained boycotts, Braden King, a professor of management and organizations at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, previously told USA TODAY.

He said shoppers will buy before and after the power outage. King said that during a prolonged boycott, it may also be difficult to “convince enough consumers to make changes to their purchases to improve profitability even slightly.”

Critics slammed Kim Kardashian’s ‘All’s Fair’, but why is it a hit?

0

play

As I watched Hulu’s new star-studded Ryan Murphy drama “Old’s Fair,” I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop.

There’s definitely a deeper reason why this series, starring Glenn Close, Naomi Watts, Sarah Paulson, and, yes, Kim Kardashian, was so unfathomably bad. I didn’t understand the meaning of “Fair,” a wealthy fantasy about a talented divorce lawyer in Los Angeles. When an award-winning actress gives a performance that would get her fired from a minor show, when the dialogue is laughably stilted, when the plot is disgustingly boring and stupid, and when it’s all wrapped up in expensive and tasteless fashion, you’d think some kind of sleight of hand was going on. Maybe it was all a dream? Perhaps it was all a prank? Perhaps the reason Kardashian’s character wore visible underwear in court is because the entire series takes place on a distant planet that worships “The Thong Song”?

But that’s not the case. The creators of “The Fair,” both in front of and behind the camera, presented this awful show to the world on Nov. 4 with completely misplaced seriousness. Still, despite an avalanche of negative reviews, viewers flocked to it: The series delivered Hulu’s biggest scripted series premiere in the past three years, garnering 3.2 million views worldwide in its first three days of streaming, according to Deadline.

It’s all good for Kardashian and Murphy and their pals, as they can enjoy viewership numbers from their mansions and post cheeky Instagrams poking fun at the series’ 4% Rotten Tomatoes score. (There are a lot of viewers who actually enjoyed the show, considering Tomato’s much higher and more positive audience rating of 66%.)

After all, do negative reviews matter? Is Kardashian’s star power strong enough to overcome her lack of acting ability on this show? In short, yes, yes.

Let’s start with the critics. Even in the era of woefully mediocre television, it’s rare for a show to inspire such wildly and unanimously negative reviews. Truth be told, I can do my best to keep you away from bad TV shows that I think will waste your precious time. But sometimes it bounces back and ends up encouraging viewers, also known as “hatewatch.” We critics often create a morbid curiosity among the unsuspecting public, inadvertently drawing people into series with flashy lines like “Someone has a vagina of revenge.”

Of course, you can decide what to see and enjoy. Personally, I don’t think “Fair” is so frustratingly bad that it’s not even a fun hate watch, but if you find pure or even mocking joy in the cold, dead stares of the Kardashians and the humiliation of A-list actresses, give it a watch. To borrow a chronic online terminology, I don’t get “fucked up.”

The Kardashian effect also plays a role. Her fans have been bombarded with advertisements for the series across her social media, and have grown accustomed to the deliberate facade the reality star and business mogul puts on around herself. In many ways, the vague unreality of “Fair” is familiar to longtime Kardashian fans. Real people don’t talk and act like the characters on The Fair, even super-successful divorce lawyers don’t have huge mansions, and they don’t dress like third-rate social media influencers in court. But ordinary people don’t act like the Kardashian/Jenner clan on Hulu’s hit reality series “The Kardashians.” Perhaps if your client is a billionaire, there might be a modicum of humor in owning a private jet, causing wanton destruction, and pretending to spew vulgar insults like a middle school boy. Perhaps there is some interest in considering the train wreck of The Fair as a kind of anthropological study of what happens when Hollywood becomes extremely lazy and lethargic.

When Kardashian asked her 354 million Instagram followers, “Did you watch the most critically acclaimed show of the year!?!?!?”, it was both a joke about pot and a challenge. Everyone, if you have the courage, please listen.

“The Fair” director Anthony Hemingway, who has worked with Murphy on acclaimed shows such as “Glee,” “American Horror Story” and “American Crime Story,” seems to think critics don’t “get” the show. “You may have certain criticisms, but there are a million other people who love it,” Hemingway told The Hollywood Reporter. “It may be beyond your scope, it may not be something you can connect to. I think that applies to anything you see on screen.”

Looking at the lively performances of actresses like Paulson & Close and Teyana Taylor, who will probably be in the Oscar conversation this year for her role in One Battle After Another, I think it’s a little extravagant to say that “Fair” simply “exceeds my standards.” But he was right, I didn’t connect with it. In fact, I wish I could take back all the time I spent watching this film. After all, time is our most precious resource.

Not everyone in Hollywood can produce prohibitively expensive shows that they promote to their millions of followers on Instagram. So here’s my challenge to you. There are dozens of worthy, transcendent, and profound series that premiered this year that actually add something to our culture. Made with heart and soul by honest artists. They are funny, tender, heartbreaking, tragic, and triumphant. So perhaps for every minute you spend watching “The Fair,” you could try an episode of Netflix’s exquisite military comedy “Boots” or Disney+’s “Star Wars” masterpiece “Andor.” Try HBO Max’s clever, Emmy-winning “The Pitt” or Amazon’s raucous and hilarious “Overcompensating.” Remember what it’s like to find media that doesn’t insult your intelligence, but delights you with wonder and thoughtfulness, and allows you to escape from real life without repeating offensive profanity.

All’s Fair in Love and War and Television Criticism. Like what you like, but don’t forget about other TV shows that might become your next favorite.

Sonder announces bankruptcy plan following end of partnership with Marriott

0

“People were rushing to leave before they locked down the building,” a guest at a Sonder-run hotel told CNBC.

Sonder announced on Monday, Nov. 10, that it plans to file for bankruptcy, a day after Marriott International announced it was terminating its licensing agreement with the short-term rental company.

Mr. Sonder said in a news release that efforts to improve the company’s finances following Marriott’s announcement were unsuccessful, forcing the company to “initiate Chapter 7 liquidation.”

“Given the failure of these efforts and (Mr. Sonder’s) financial condition, the board has made the difficult decision to wind down the business and proceed with an immediate court-supervised liquidation of its U.S. operations,” the company said in a statement.

The move comes after Sonder and Marriott signed a licensing agreement in August 2024 that would allow Sonder hotels to be booked through Marriott’s Bonvoy website, according to CNBC and the New York Times. However, this agreement ended with an announcement from Marriott on Sunday, November 9th.

Hotel guest ‘scrambles’ home leaving letter under door

According to CNBC, guests at the Sonder Hotel were told on Sunday they had to leave their rooms within 24 hours and look for housing. One of the guests, Connie Yang, told the outlet that her prepaid stay in New York from November 7th to November 17th had been cancelled.

“People were rushing to leave before we could seal off the building,” she said.

Another guest at Sonder’s hotel, Juan Avalos Mendez, told the Times that he woke up on Nov. 10, three days into a 12-day trip to Amsterdam, to find a letter slipped under his door. The letter said the hotel would be closing and I needed to check out by 11am.

Another guest, Joanne Lee, told the Times that Marriott offered her no “real solutions” after canceling her four-night stay. She and her husband were planning to stay in an apartment in Rome after Christmas.

“It was disappointing,” said Lee, 42. “My husband is already a little unsure of Airbnb, so what we liked about it was that it had the Marriott brand on it.”

Why did Marriott terminate its contract with Sonder?

Marriott said in a Nov. 9 news release that the agreement was terminated due to “Sonder’s default.” “Sonder is no longer affiliated with Marriott Bonvoy and Sonder properties are no longer available for new reservations through Marriott channels.”

In Sonder’s news release, interim CEO Janice Sears claimed that issues with Sonder’s integration with Marriott Bonvoy’s website resulted in the company losing money.

“Unfortunately, due to unforeseen challenges in coordinating the technology framework, our integration with Marriott International was significantly delayed, resulting in significant unanticipated integration costs and a significant reduction in revenue due to Sonder’s participation in Marriott’s Bonvoy reservation system,” Sears said.

JFK’s grandson Jack Schlossberg runs for New York Congress

play

Jack Schlossberg, the grandson of John F. Kennedy and an influential Democratic Party candidate, is running for Congress and starting a campaign to replace retiring New York State Representative Jerry Nadler, the New York Times reported on November 11.

Caroline Kennedy’s only son will serve parts of New York City if elected to succeed Mr. Nadler, the former chairman of the influential House Judiciary Committee, which currently represents the 12th Congressional District.

“There’s nothing our party can’t do to address the cost of living, the corruption, the constitutional crisis we’re in,” Schlossberg told the New York Times, arguing that a Democratic majority in the U.S. House of Representatives is the only way to protect democracy. “But without Congressional control, there is almost nothing we can do. can do. “

Schlossberg, 32, told the Times on Sept. 2 that his candidacy was “certainly a possibility.” The next day, on Sept. 3, Schlossberg polled his 700,000 followers on his Instagram Story asking, “Should I run?” He boasts around 1.5 million followers on Instagram and TikTok.

USA TODAY has reached out to Schlossberg’s representatives for comment.

He will be the first member of the Kennedy family to run for Congress since Joe Kennedy III left his seat in the Massachusetts House of Representatives to run in the primary against progressive Sen. Ed Markey. Another Kennedy successor lost the race in 2020.

Mr. Schlossberg is also an estranged cousin of Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a key ally of President Donald Trump. Schlossberg urged RFK Jr. to resign because of his long history of promoting health misinformation and called his relatives “a threat to public health and America’s scientific leadership.”

Regarded by Gen Z as a rising star in the national Democratic Party, Schlossberg spoke at the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago and is known for his unique sense of humor. In April, he raised eyebrows when he posted on X that he and Usha Vance, wife of Vice President J.D. Vance, had a child together.

But Schlossberg doesn’t seem to have Nadler’s support. Nadler previously criticized the online creator during a Sept. 4 appearance on CNN News Central with host Kate Bolduan.

“What do you think about Kennedy holding the seat?” Bolduan asked Nadler. “There’s nothing particularly good or bad about Kennedy taking my seat,” he said, adding, “Unlike Schlossberg, Kennedy should have a record of public service and public accomplishments, and he doesn’t have them.”

“I don’t think he’ll end up being a candidate, certainly not a major candidate,” Nadler added in an interview with CNN. Mr. Nadler, 78, was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1992.

Former first daughter Chelsea Clinton previously decided not to run as a candidate to replace Nadler. A spokesperson for the only child of former President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton denied reports on September 3 that he was entering politics.

Candidates for the 12th District include former Nadler aide and New York State Assemblyman Micah Lasher, financial industry executive Alan Purdy, and community organizer Liam Elkind.

Inside the shutdown deal, from drug control to Jack Smith’s jab

The funding bill to end the government shutdown includes some eyebrow-raising proposals.

play

WASHINGTON – A bill moving forward to end the longest U.S. government shutdown in history includes some eyebrow-raising proposals.

While most of the attention from lawmakers in recent days has focused on measures to reverse layoffs for thousands of federal workers, restart essential services and generally turn the lights on in government again, several smaller provisions in the huge funding package have spilled over into other provisions that could soon become law with President Donald Trump’s signature.

Some of the measures are bipartisan. Others even less so. And while no bills are likely to completely derail the fast-moving bills expected to pass the House on Wednesday, some of them could pose political problems.

jab at jack smith

The funding package’s most controversial measure allows a group of Republican senators to sue the government for up to $500,000.

At issue is former special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into allegations of election interference after the 2020 presidential election. As part of his investigation into President Donald Trump’s actions, Smith has subpoenaed the phone records of more than a half-dozen Republican members of Congress.

None of these lawmakers have been charged, but they were recently enraged when it was revealed that their communications were part of evidence gathering. The bill includes a provision waiving the government’s immunity from lawsuits over subpoenas.

new cannabis regulations

Another element of the closure agreement closes loopholes that have allowed the unregulated sale of certain cannabis products nationwide for years.

Hemp and marijuana are derived from the same plant, cannabis, but hemp contains less THC, the compound that gets people high. The 2018 Farm Bill included a workaround that would allow hemp-derived THC products to be sold nationwide. Since then, sales have been strong.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) argued on the Senate floor Monday that new regulations included in the funding package to end the government shutdown are akin to a “prohibition order.”

Senators were evenly divided in favor of the bill across party lines. In the end, the new rules remained in the bill. The regulation is scheduled to take effect in 2026.

Security at Capitol increased after Kirk’s murder

Lawmakers are increasingly concerned about the safety of themselves, their families and staff following the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. Just last week, a man who threatened to kill members of Congress was arrested before entering the Senate building.

The funding package expected to be passed this week includes $203.5 million to strengthen security for lawmakers “in response to the evolving threat environment.” $30 million will be used to reimburse state and local law enforcement agencies to protect their local elected officials.

Trump Watcher Protection

The closure deal also maintains full funding for the Government Accountability Office, the federal watchdog agency that has served as a key watchdog for Republicans and Democrats in Washington for decades.

For months, the White House and some Republicans in Congress have sought to weaken the agency, which has repeatedly cited violations of federal law by Trump’s second-term administration.

Target will lower prices on 3,000 items. View sample

play

Target announced Nov. 11 that it is cutting prices on 3,000 items as shoppers look to stretch their budgets for the holidays.

The cuts come as more shoppers worry about inflation, tariffs and rising food prices. Target announced lower prices on food, beverages and essential items.

“From pantry essentials and baby supplies to household essentials, these price reductions are designed to make everyday shopping more affordable throughout the holiday season,” the retailer said in a press release.

Which products will be discounted?

The price cuts began earlier this month and will continue through December. The retailer has not confirmed the full list of products, but did share a sample.

  • Kraft Mac & Cheese 11 oz: Now $1.69 (was $1.99)
  • Gerber Kids Snacks: Now $2.99 (was $3.49)
  • Market Pantry Hickory Smoked Spiral Cut Bone-in Ham Price per pound: Currently $1.49 (was $2.49/pound)
  • Pillsbury Pie Crust: Now $3.19 (was $4.59)
  • Good and Gather Honeycrisp Apples, 3 lb bag: now $5.99 (was $6.99)

  • Sudafed 36-tablet pack: now $12.99 (was $16.99)
  • CeraVe Face Cleanser: Now $13.69 (was $16.99)

Thanksgiving meals will be cheaper at Target this year

Target also highlighted Thanksgiving meals for four for less than $20 before tax. USA TODAY previously reported that the retailer said its holiday menu prices are at an all-time low.

“We’re proud that our teams moved quickly to lower prices on thousands of items our guests need most,” said Lisa Roos, Target’s executive vice president and chief merchandising officer for food, essentials and beauty, in a press release.

“This is important work that will make a difference for families who are making ends meet during the holidays. It is also work that builds on Target’s tradition of strengthening communities through our business operations.”

Shoppers want value

Neil Saunders, a retail analyst at research and analysis firm GlobalData, said it’s a good time for retailers, including Target, to cut prices.

“Target correctly recognized that value is the watchword for consumers this holiday season, and many will be shopping around for the best bargains and deals,” Sanders told USA TODAY. “With more people than ever comparing prices at retail stores, Target will need to make some markdowns to remain competitive.”

Still, Sanders said, among shoppers, “Target’s price perception is not as sharp as Walmart and other more value-oriented retailers, and these price cuts may not completely improve that.”

‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ bandleader Cleto Escobedo III dies at age 59

0

Cleto Escobedo III, bandleader of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” The in-house band Cleto and the Cretones has passed away. He was 59 years old.

Kimmel shared the news about her childhood friend on social media on Tuesday, Nov. 11.

“Early this morning, we lost my longtime bandleader Cleto Escobedo III, a great friend, father, son, musician, and human being,” Kimmel wrote. “To say we are heartbroken is an understatement.”

“Cleto and I have been inseparable since we were nine years old. The fact that we get to work together every day is a dream that neither of us ever imagined would come true,” he added. “Please take care of your friends and keep Cleto’s wife, children and parents in your prayers.”

A cause of death was not immediately available.

In the 1970s, Kimmel and Escobedo grew up together as neighbors in Las Vegas. Primarily a saxophonist, Escobedo formed the band Cleto and the Cretones with Toshi Yanagi, Jimmy Earle, Jonathan Dressel, and Jeff Babko.

When Kimmel was hired as ABC’s late-night host in 2003, he tried to get Escobedo a role on his show. And Escobedo has been with the show since it first aired 22 years ago. Escobedo’s father, Cleto Escobedo Jr., also plays saxophone in the band.

“We started a lifelong friendship, highlighted by the kind of torture that only a brother can inflict on you without getting arrested,” Kimmel said in 2016 on a show celebrating Escobedo’s 50th birthday. “He taught me everything I needed to know. In fact, he taught me some things I didn’t need to know.”

On Monday, November 10th’s episode, Grammy Award-winning musician Christopher Cross performed with Cleto and the Cretones as part of the show’s ’80s Week. Singer Debbie Gibson will join the band on Wednesday, November 12th, and Susanna Hoffs will perform with the Cretones on Thursday, November 13th.

Last week, “Jimmy Kimmel Live” abruptly postponed its Thursday, Nov. 6, episode. A person familiar with the matter said the cancellation was due to personal issues involving Jimmy Kimmel.

When do we expect employment and inflation to rise after the government reopens?

0

The Bureau of Labor Statistics needs to catch up after the shutdown delayed key reports.

play

With the federal government on the verge of reopening, the economic drought caused by the shutdown could soon end.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics is preparing to release the weeks-delayed report, but economists warn that the result won’t be a lot of information all at once. It also may not fully capture what happened to the U.S. economy during the government shutdown.

Due to the suspension of data collection at the agency, the release of the two monthly employment statistics and the third quarter GDP data were postponed. The release of the Consumer Price Index on November 13th is also expected to be delayed.

Private sector indicators have helped fill some of the gap, but government statistics are still considered the gold standard.

When will BLS release data after shutdown?

The September jobs report is expected to be the first major release after the shutdown, as the data was already collected before the shutdown began. Other key indicators on inflation and spending are expected to take longer, perhaps a week or two, Morgan Stanley economists said.

Economists at Goldman Sachs expect the BLS to announce a new data release schedule between Nov. 13 and Nov. 17, depending on when the shutdown ends.

Economists at Goldman Sachs also said they expected the September jobs report to be released soon after the shutdown ends, and that other releases would take longer “given the Thanksgiving holiday, which compressed the data collection period in November, and the fact that the BLS may need additional time to determine how to address missing data for October.”

What does the delayed data mean for the Fed?

Brian Bethune, an economist at Boston University, said he doesn’t know which releases the BLS will prioritize, especially under the agency’s new leadership. But he added that if officials can make adjustments, the latest November data will likely be the most helpful to the Fed ahead of its December meeting.

“Without these metrics, you can’t really do anything, so the Fed’s inaction tends to be an advantage,” Bethune said. “I think it’s fair to say that the Fed is currently evenly split on whether to continue lowering rates or leave them unchanged.”

The data mess comes at a time when Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said there is no “risk-free” path to policy, with inflation still above the Fed’s 2% target and the job market showing signs of cooling.

Economists at Morgan Stanley said in a Nov. 10 note that they expect the unemployment rate to rise through the end of the year, expect spending growth to slow in the fourth quarter and expect another quarter-point rate cut in December.

“Stronger-than-expected labor market data poses a risk to this view due to a return to data dependence,” they said.

How does BLS collect data for October?

No one at BLS collected data during the shutdown, so there are no government reports that would provide a snapshot of the economy during that period.

Still, agencies have some options. Respondents to the November survey could be asked to recall the situation in October, when their data would normally have been collected. You could also send out another survey later and ask respondents to reflect on their month. Or they could skip October altogether.

“It’s completely unclear how they backfill the household survey,” Bethune said. “If it’s not statistically or humanely feasible, there could be a gap.”

The U.S. Department of Labor and Bureau of Labor Statistics could not be reached for comment.

Ohio State surpasses Indiana, Texas A&M in CFP rankings

0

play

There was some uncertainty in this season’s first College Football Playoff rankings. The second announcement on Tuesday, Nov. 11 had fewer unknowns, and Ohio State was expected to maintain the No. 1 spot.

The defending champion Buckeyes finished the regular season undefeated and are three games away from qualifying for the Big Ten title game. Right behind them is conference rival Indiana. The Hoosiers, also undefeated, remained in second place after a thrilling win over Penn State in the closing minutes.

Texas A&M, the only undefeated team in the bowl district, remains in third place after an impressive road win over Missouri State. The Aggies are followed by SEC rivals Alabama and Georgia, making it the same top five as last week.

However, there was a change in the second half of the top 10.

Texas Tech moved up two spots to No. 6, defeating previously unbeaten Brigham Young and establishing itself as the Big 12 championship favorite, dropping the Cougars five spots to No. 12 before jumping past Mississippi State for No. 6. Oregon State moved up to No. 8 after a narrow road loss to Iowa. Notre Dame and Texas moved up one spot into the top 10.

In the competition among Group 5 conference teams, South Florida, representing the United States, is in 24th place. The Bulls are the only representative of this group in the top 25. The highest ranked champions in these conferences are guaranteed a spot.

This ranking is the second of six published by the committee. The next three will be published every Tuesday until the final release on Sunday, December 7th, when the 12 teams in the field and playoff bracket will be announced.

The committee will seed all qualifying teams, including the top five conference champions, and then the top four teams will receive byes, regardless of league.

The on-campus first-round schedule will see No. 5 play No. 12, No. 6 play No. 11, No. 7 play No. 10 and No. 8 play No. 9.

The Ford Mustang legacy comes to life in an immersive LA experience

0

play

Car enthusiasts who aren’t die-hard Ford Mustang fans tend to take them for granted. Ford has sold so many cars over the past 61 years that they are everywhere. They can be found on every street in every town across America, and in many places overseas. When they appear in shows and movies, they don’t even blink. It’s easy to forget how much history this car has, how deeply woven into American culture it is, and how many cool features it has. “American Icon: A Mustang Immersive Experience” is here to remind you of that.

What is an immersive experience?

Have you been to Body Worlds or Titanic Immersive Experience in your area? It’s the same team behind this one. Ford employees wanted to do something special to commemorate the Mustang’s 60th anniversary last year, but management didn’t want just a quiet, staid museum exhibit. A so-called “immersive experience” was required.

Essentially, it’s still a museum exhibit. It’s filled with rare cars, historical artifacts, exhibits, and history lessons. But instead of just wandering the halls, visitors are guided through seven rooms, each of which displays video, from simple screens on the walls to projectors that project video onto every wall and floor, as if they were entering a Star Trek holodeck. Not limited to passive video, the experience ends with a motion simulator thrill ride with wind, smoke, and water spray.

Room 1: Design

Semi-guided tours begin in the waiting room, but more extensive reading material is available. On the wall is a timeline tracing the development of the original Mustang show car before its debut at the 1964 World’s Fair. The exhibit includes sketches and photos of other designs that didn’t make the cut, as well as some interesting facts that I won’t spoil.

Room 2: History lesson

As you are ushered into the second room, a video is projected across the front wall covering a brief history of the Mustang from 1964 to today. In addition to facts and old photos, the book also includes interviews with Ford executive chairman Bill Ford Jr., TV host and car collector Jay Leno, film producer Jerry Bruckheimer, Ford archivist Ted Ryan, and more.

As this is a celebration of the Mustang’s enduring success, it is not a comprehensive history and some points are glossed over or omitted. For example, although there is no mention of the Mustang II or Mustang Mach-E, Bill Ford Jr. and Ted Ryan mention a narrowly averted disaster when Ford briefly considered replacing the Mustang with the later Mazda-designed front-wheel-drive Ford Probe.

Room 3: Cultural significance

This is where the immersion begins. When the Room 2 video ends, the door on the wall it was projected on opens, revealing a 1964 Mustang Notchback with a 289 V8 in the center rear of the all-white room. Upon entering, projectors begin playing computer-animated videos on all four walls and the floor.

At first it’s just some cool graphics and a monologue, but then it’s transferred to the original Mustang assembly line in Michigan. From there, go to the 1964 World’s Fair and stand on a turntable as the expo spins around you (this can cause motion sickness, so stay focused on the cars). The story then travels to California, where the Mustang’s contributions to American culture over the decades are told.

Room 4: Road Trip

Once you reach 2025, you will be guided to the next room. There, you’ll find a brand new Mustang Dark Horse sitting on a turntable in the center rear of the room. When the 360-degree projector turns on, you’re thrown into the middle of a California road trip. Unlike in the previous room, where the car was stationary, this time the Mustang Dark Horse rotates from side to side sequentially in time with the video, making it appear as if it is actually driving on the virtual road to the tracked car. Even though Route 66 does not pass through Utah, a highly inaccurate depiction of California’s Pacific Coast Highway passes by before warping to a deserted section of Route 66 visible in central Utah.

You are then transported back to the center of an unidentified city, where you line up for a street race against several other animated Mustangs. At first it looks like a scene from the movie Fast and Furious, but it quickly transforms into a Need for Speed video game, complete with jumps, helicopter chases, and slow-motion effects.

Room 5: Movie car

Take a break from immersive videos and dive into the world of Mustangs in movies. Here you can see real movie cars from Transformers, Kick-Ass, and the real Eleanor from Gone in 60 Seconds. Mary Tyler Moore Show cars are also on display (ask your parents or grandparents).

Don’t miss the movie poster and photo collage on your way into this room. That’s because it includes a copy of the original frame from Bullet, starring Steve McQueen, that has never been shown to the public. There’s also an interactive exhibit about recommended road trips and an exhibit where you can hear what each generation of Mustang sounds like.

Room 6: GTD

If you haven’t seen the Mustang GTD in person yet, now’s your chance to see it up close and personal. Not just one car, but multiple parts are on display, including front and rear suspensions, active rear wing, transaxle, and transaxle cooler installed inside the trunk lid.

This room also features a timeline of Mustang racing from the 1960s onwards, which inspired the GTD. A Mustang GT3 race car is also on display in the lobby immediately after entering the exhibition building.

Room 7: Thrill rides

It’s not like riding a real GTD, but it’s still a good time. Anyone who has ridden Star Tours at Disneyland will agree. Sitting in a power seat that tilts and tilts in time with the video, you’ll feel like you’re in a car driving through a dystopian city. Fans blow air to make it feel like it’s actually moving, smoke wafts from the floor when it burns out, and water splashes on your face as you walk through puddles.

The story itself, told by Captain America actor and Mustang enthusiast Anthony Mackie, is very similar to the Terminator movies. The AI has conquered the world and you, an agent of the Resistance, have stolen the “AI Core” and must retrieve it from a burnt-out city. Of course, you’re being chased by evil robots, flying drones, and driving an unbadged Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen. The GTD may not be the best car to race around a bombed-out city given its ground clearance, but it looks cool when you’re jumping off a bridge in a Ghosn in 60 Seconds-inspired style. The graphics are more video game than sci-fi movie, but still plenty of fun.

Your ticket is worth $500 to a new Ford

American Icon: A Mustang Immersive Experience opens on Saturday, November 8th in Los Angeles’ Boyle Heights neighborhood, just across the river from downtown. It runs until the end of January, and tickets are $34. But don’t wait, because if you bring your ticket to a Ford dealership in Southern California by January 6th, you’ll get $500 off your new Ford purchase.

After LA, the experience will travel to Miami and Dallas in 2026. Ford is working on adding more cities across the U.S. in 2027 and hopes to take the show internationally in the coming years.

US transportation chief warns of potential flight disruptions

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy spoke at O’Hare Airport, the hub for most flight cancellations and delays. So far, he said, the disruption to passengers has been minor compared to what could happen in the future.

CHICAGO – Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy promised on Nov. 11 that if the government doesn’t move soon to reopen, the flight delays and disruptions American travelers have experienced so far will be considered “minor.”

Duffy was speaking to reporters at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, a major hub in the Midwest that has experienced more delays and cancellations than anywhere else in the United States, according to aviation data tracking firm FlightAware. As of 4 p.m. local time, there were 121 cancellations and 281 delays at the airport, according to FlightAware.

“If the House doesn’t pass this bill, I think we’re going to be looking at it in horror Saturday, Sunday and Monday,” Duffy said. “It was beautiful. It could get worse than that.”

Duffy’s comments came days after the Federal Aviation Administration began reducing the number of flights to and from airports across the United States. Travelers told USA TODAY on Nov. 7, the first day of reduced flights, that they feared flying over the Thanksgiving holiday would be a “massacre.”

He warned that flying would become even more difficult, likely over the weekend, much earlier than the holidays.

“We’re going to see disruptions of 10% or more, and airlines will probably ground planes completely,” Duff said. “That’s how serious this is.”

Duffy wasn’t sure how long it would take for the airport to return to normal operations if the government reopened. He said the aviation authority had previously relied on data modeling to decide how many flights to cut and would rely on the same system to decide how quickly to resume operations.

$10,000 bonus for FAA employees? Duffy talks about President Trump’s promises to workers

Air traffic controllers continued to work without pay as essential personnel during the grounding. However, some people were unable to come because they were looking for other jobs to make ends meet amid the gridlock in Congress, leading the aviation authority to cancel flights. Approximately 15,000 flights were delayed on Nov. 11, according to FlightAware.

President Donald Trump instead threatened to “garnish” the paychecks of workers who didn’t pay them or told them to quit, and promised $10,000 bonuses to those who continued working.

Duffy called the bonus offered by the president “excellent,” but it fell short of a guarantee.

“The air traffic controllers never missed a day and showed up every time they were scheduled to work. They should receive a bonus,” Duffy said, adding that the exact amount would depend on analysis. He called the workers “patriots” and said they should be invited to the White House to receive their checks.

He also stopped instructing workers who did not report to work not to return.

“I’m worried about the air traffic controllers. I’m worried about their dedication. I’m worried about their patriotism,” he said. “We haven’t made a decision yet, but we will be looking at those controllers.”

Mr Duffy added that he was concerned about what lasting impact the closure would have on aviation workforce recruitment, saying he feared the experience would make future air traffic controllers wary.

‘We have to live today’: Duffy promises to modernize air traffic technology

As one of the goals of the aviation agency under Duffy, the Secretary of Transportation said he wants to modernize the use of equipment controls.

“Air traffic controllers need brand new equipment,” Duffy said, noting that air traffic controllers still use paper flight strips, “the great technology of 1985” but outdated. “This is a shock from the past, but we live today and technology should live from today.”

Duffy said Congress allocated $12.5 billion to the FAA, but that’s less than the $31.5 billion he says is needed for the program he envisions.

In addition to the changes to the digital flight strip, he said he wants to build a digital platform to manage the skies. Duffy estimated the program would take more than three years. He said the agency would likely consider hiring a private company for the project.

“The FAA does a great job on safety, but they don’t know how to do it,” Duffy said. We’ll have to get radios, new voice switches, new radar, new telecommunications, and switch from analog to digital. ”
