President Donald Trump orders tariff exemptions for beef, coffee, tea, fruit

The White House announced that President Trump signed an executive order exempting certain agricultural products from the reciprocal tariffs imposed on April 2.

play

President Donald Trump has exempted a wide range of agricultural products from reciprocal tariffs amid concerns about consumer prices, lowering taxes on products such as beef, coffee, chocolate, bananas, tomatoes and oranges as affordability becomes a political issue.

The White House announced on November 14 that President Trump signed an executive order exempting certain products from the blanket tariffs imposed on many countries on April 2. The order is part of a larger push by President Trump and his administration to address Americans’ growing concerns about persistently high food prices.

“The Trump Administration is committed to pursuing an agile, nuanced, and multifaceted strategy on trade and tariffs,” said White House Press Secretary Khush Desai.

Other products that will be exempt from reciprocal tariffs include tea, tropical fruits and fruit juices, spices and additional fertilizers, according to a White House fact sheet.

The move to lower prices at grocery stores comes after Democrats won big victories in gubernatorial races in New Jersey and Virginia, and in New York’s mayoral race. Democrats made the cost of living issue a central focus in this month’s election.

This is a sharp reversal for President Trump, who has long maintained that import tariffs do not drive inflation, even though economists say they raise consumer costs.

Grocery store food prices rose 0.6% from July to August, the fastest monthly increase in food prices since October 2022, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The overall inflation rate reached 3% in September, up slightly from the previous month.

President Trump upended the global trading system by imposing a 10% basic tariff on imports from each country and additional specific tariffs that vary by country.

The Nov. 14 executive order followed the Framework Trade Agreement announced Nov. 13, which would eliminate tariffs on certain food and other items imported from Argentina, Ecuador, Guatemala, and El Salvador if the deal is finalized. U.S. officials are eyeing additional agreements by the end of the year.

President Trump has focused squarely on affordability in recent days, insisting that higher costs were caused by policies enacted by former President Joe Biden, not his own tariff policies.

“We, not the Democrats, have done a great job on affordability,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Nov. 6. “But they said we just lost the election because of affordability.”

Trump has floated a number of ideas since his election to help Americans financially, including 50-year home loans and $2,000 customs dividend checks.

South Carolina serial killer becomes third person to die by firing squad this year

In October 2004, Steven Bryant was on probation for robbery when he went on an eight-day murder spree that left three people dead. At the final crime scene, he provoked the police by writing a message in blood.

play

A South Carolina killer who murdered three people in a week and then provoked police with a message written in blood has become the third inmate executed by firing squad in the state this year.

Stephen Corey Bryant, who once scrawled “Catch Me If You Can” on a wall using the blood of 62-year-old victim Willard “TJ” Tietjen, was executed Friday, Nov. 14, for a 2004 murder. He was pronounced dead at 6:05 p.m.

Bryant’s executioner tied him to a chair and placed a hood over his head. Three volunteer correctional officers shot him simultaneously from 15 feet away.

Bryant’s lawyers had argued that he should not receive the death penalty because he was sexually abused as a child and suffered brain damage from his mother’s drug and alcohol use during pregnancy. The South Carolina Supreme Court earlier this week rejected those arguments and allowed the execution to proceed.

Bryant will be the 43rd inmate to be executed in the United States in 2025, the most inmates executed in a single year since 2012. He was also only one of six people executed by firing squad in modern U.S. history.

Here’s what you need to know about Bryant’s execution.

What was Stephen Bryant convicted of?

In October 2004, Steven Bryant was on probation for robbery when he went on an eight-day killing spree that left three people dead and one seriously injured.

The last person to be killed was Willard “TJ” Tietjen, who was shot nine times in his home just east of Columbia on October 11, 2004, after allowing Bryant to break in.

That afternoon, Tietjen’s wife and daughter kept calling him, but he didn’t answer. At 5:30 p.m., someone took his cell phone, but it wasn’t Tietjen. It was Bryant.

“TJ is dead,” he told Mildred Tietjen, Tietjen’s wife of 39 years, who testified during the sentencing phase of Bryant’s trial, according to the Sumter, South Carolina, newspaper The Item.

When Tietjen’s daughter, Kimberly Dees, called her father’s number, Bryant answered again and asked, “I’m having a great day. How are you?” Dees testified before saying he had killed his father three hours earlier.

When police arrived at Tietjen’s home, they discovered that he had been shot nine times and that the attacker had used his blood to write a provocative message on the wall: “Four victims in two weeks. Catch me if you can.” Tietjen’s eyes were burned with cigarettes and candles were lit around his body, according to court records.

Bryant also left a handwritten note in a manila envelope on Tietjen’s chest that read, “I am the light. I am so bright. I am the sun. I am truly yours, The Prowler.” A note on the table read, “Good luck finding me. LMFAO,” Item reported.

Earlier that week, Tietjen shot and killed three other men, two of whom died. Among them were his friend Clifton Gainey, 36, and 35-year-old Christopher Burgess, a stranger. A 56-year-old man named Clinton Brown was shot in the back and left for dead, but he survived.

Bryant pleaded guilty to all crimes. The judge sentenced him to life in prison for the murders of Mr. Gainey and Mr. Burgess, and the death penalty for the murder of Mr. Tietjen.

Who is Willard “TJ” Tietjen?

Tietjen was a devoted father, grandfather, and husband who retired from the Air Force after being stationed all over the world, from the Philippines to Germany to Thailand to Oregon.

The Item reported in 2008 that the daughter testified that her father took her to plays and concerts and taught her how to fish, hunt, roller skate, appreciate nature and respect her country.

“We spent many happy times together,” Dees said, adding that he taught her a very important life lesson: “The value of life. All lives have value…We are all part of God’s creation.”

On stage, Ms. Dees recalled how her 5-year-old son comforted them after the death of their beloved family patriarch.

“He said he would always be with me and make sure no one killed me,” she said, according to The Item.

Meanwhile, Mildred Tietjen testified that they married just three months after meeting on a blind date in December 1964 while her husband was stationed in Iowa, The Item reported.

“He had such a zest for life,” she said, then recalled his last words: “I love you.”

Why was Stephen Bryant executed by firing squad?

South Carolina allowed Bryant to choose from three execution methods: firing squad, electric chair, or lethal injection. If he doesn’t choose, the default method is the electric chair.

Firing squads are rarely introduced in the United States, but they appear to be gaining momentum as states say they are struggling to obtain the drugs needed for lethal injections.

Before this year, Utah was the only state to use this method, doing so only three times: in 1977, 1996 and 2010. Utah had planned to use the method on inmates in August, but the Utah Supreme Court blocked it over concerns about dementia.

South Carolina legalized firing squads in 2021 and began using the method this year, executing two inmates in April and May.

A defense lawyer who last witnessed an execution of this kind in April described it as “barbaric” and “a horrific act that belongs to the darkest chapter of history.” State officials defend the method as constitutional.

In addition to Utah and South Carolina, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Idaho have also legalized firing squads. Idaho, which approved firing squads in 2023, plans to make them the state’s default method next year.

When is the next execution?

The next execution in the United States was that of Richard Barry Randolph in Florida for the 1988 murder of his neighbor Minnie Ruth McCollum, who was raped, beaten and stabbed to death in East Palatka, about 45 miles east of Gainesville.

If things go as planned, Randolph will be the 44th person executed in the United States this year, a number not seen since 2010.

Am I eligible for AT&T coverage? How to claim $7,500

0

play

Data breaches act like silent cracks. You can’t see it or make a sound, but it opens up a wound that takes years to heal. For millions of AT&T customers, that crack opened twice in 2024, leaving their Social Security numbers, addresses, passcodes, and even call records exposed, as if the shadows of the deep internet had stolen parts of their identities.

Today, the damage is beginning to be repaired. The $177 million class action settlement could result in payments of up to $7,500 per person depending on the depth of the lawsuit’s impact. And as the deadline approaches, Latino consumers across the U.S. are asking, “Am I eligible? How do I claim this money?”

Who is eligible for AT&T coverage?

There are two classes of customers who can file complaints, and some consumers may fall into both categories.

The first class corresponds to those affected by the March 30, 2024 incident, in which sensitive data, including social security numbers and access codes, was made public on the dark web. According to the complaint, Type 2 corresponds to an incident where call records and messages were illegally downloaded on July 12, 2024.

AT&T has acknowledged the two incidents but denies wrongdoing. The truth is, the attack may have affected more than 7 million active customers in 2024 and more than 65 million users who had accounts between 2019 and 2024, according to court documents and company statements. If you have questions, call 833-890-4930 and an operator will check to see if your name is included.

When is the deadline to claim compensation from AT&T?

Time is of the essence. The deadline to file a claim is Tuesday, November 18th.

Forms submitted online must be submitted by that date. If mailed, the postmark must be no later than November 18th.

For thousands of consumers, especially the elderly, this process can seem scary. Therefore, rather than waiting, we recommend checking your eligibility, gathering documentation if applicable, and filing your claim in advance. The sooner you respond, the sooner the review will proceed in order to receive compensation.

How do I claim AT&T coverage?

Claims may be submitted online at www.telecomdatasettlement.com.

If you would like us to mail it to you, please send the form to AT&T Data Incident Settlement, Croll Settlement Administration LLC, PO Box 5324, New York, NY 10150-5324.

This form asks for basic customer information and, in the case of some types of compensation, documentation of the financial loss associated with the violation. The website also has a Frequently Asked Questions and Spanish Support section, which can be helpful if you are not comfortable with English or need additional support.

How much money can they receive from AT&T compensation?

The amount depends on the type of impact and the class of contract to which the consumer belongs. Those involved in the first incident can claim compensation of up to $5,000 for documented losses. You also have the option to make payments in Tier 1 or Tier 2 without requiring a receipt. Tier 1 is five times the size of Tier 2 and accommodates customers whose Social Security numbers are publicly available.

In the case of a second incident, those affected can claim up to $2,500 for documented losses or receive a Tier 3 payment calculated as a pro-rata share of the remaining funds after administrative costs and other claims have been covered.

Epstein’s emails described horrific sexual encounters. Was Trump aware?

0

In newly released emails, Mr. Epstein details the amounts and amounts he paid. Mr. Epstein said Mr. Trump was also aware.

play

Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced financier who committed suicide while facing sex trafficking charges, details the sex acts he paid for, according to recently released emails.

In a typo-riddled email sent to journalists at 5 a.m. last year, Epstein wrote, “The girls returned to the house multiple times. They paid $200 for rubs and tugs. There was no sex. Some worked at lokaku massage parlors, and most were in their mid-20s.”

The exact date of the email, February 1, 2019, was months before the registered sex offender realized federal authorities were after him. The email is one of a slew of documents related to the case released by Congress in recent days.

Epstein’s emails and potential revelations about who may have been involved in the sex crimes are at the center of a massive battle in Washington, D.C., with Democrats seeking the release of files that include President Donald Trump’s name. Prominent Republicans, including U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, have also called for his release. The White House has called the release of the emails a “smear,” and President Trump has taken to social media to refer to the uproar as the “Epstein hoax.”

Epstein pleaded guilty in 2008 to soliciting prostitution from a minor and served 13 months in prison. He was indicted on federal sex trafficking charges in July 2019 and faces a maximum sentence of 45 years in prison. He died a month later by suicide in prison while awaiting trial.

Epstein repeatedly referred to President Trump in the email, saying he “spent hours at my house” and “knew the girls.” Mr. Trump attended Mr. Epstein’s parties and flew on Mr. Epstein’s plane in the 1990s, but later expelled Mr. Epstein from his Mar-a-Lago club for recruiting female employees.

The email from early 2019 included specific references to Trump.

“Mr. Trump knew that and he came to my house many times during that time,” Epstein said.

As more details of the emails emerged, President Trump called on the Justice Department to investigate whether prominent Democrats, including former President Bill Clinton, were involved with Epstein.

“This is the new Russia, Russia, Russia fraud, and all arrows point to the Democratic Party,” the president said on his platform Truth Social. “Records show that these men and many others spent much of their lives with Epstein and on his ‘island.’ stay tuned! ! ! “

It competes with large three-row SUVs such as the Chevrolet Traverse, Dodge Durango, Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot, Kia Telluride, Mazda CX-90, Nissan Pathfinder, Toyota Grand Highlander, and Volkswagen Atlas.

The Palisade is one of the few hybrids available in its class, along with the Grand Highlander and CX-90.

2026 Hyundai Palisade Hybrid Key Features

  • up to 34mpg
  • 329 horsepower, 339 pound-feet of torque

  • 3rd row microphone and speaker
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • wireless charging

Improvements in key areas

When I drove the gas-only Palisade, I liked almost everything about the 2026 Palisade, but I wanted more power. Hybrid solves that problem and adds some other welcome features. The Palisade uses Hyundai’s latest hybrid system. Add about $2,200 and 200 pounds when compared to a similarly equipped gas-only model.

This hybrid replaces the Palisade’s naturally aspirated 3.5L V6 with a 2.5L turbocharged four-cylinder connected to an electric motor. The new hybrid system, which will also be rolled out to models in other segments, places the main electric motor between the gasoline engine and the transmission. Hyundai says electric regeneration during braking improves both vehicle performance and fuel efficiency.

Hybrids can travel up to 600 miles on one tank of gas.

Second-row legroom is slightly reduced because the battery is mounted under the passenger seat, but the Palisade’s interior remains one of the most comfortable and attractive in its class. Towing capacity is reduced from 1,000 pounds to 4,000 pounds.

The hybrid drivetrain is available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive on SEL, SEL Premium, and Calligraphy models. There is no hybrid version of the off-road-oriented Palisade XRT Pro, as Hyundai believes the extra weight of a hybrid will conflict with rough terrain.

We drove the well-equipped Palisade Calligraphy AWD Hybrid on everything from Austin’s intense rush-hour traffic to sharp turns on state highways to winding roads through ranchlands and the scenic Texas Hill Country. It had a price tag of $59,535.

The Palisade Hybrid disengages the rear wheels to improve fuel efficiency at low loads.

Driving impression

The most efficient front-drive model gets 33 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and 34 mpg combined. AWD models check in on 29/30/29.

The new system employs several features commonly associated with electric vehicles. For example, ‘Stay Mode’ uses the battery to power the climate control and infotainment for up to an hour with the engine off. This is similar to Pet Mode, which some EVs offer to keep pets safe inside parked cars, but Hyundai doesn’t include a disclaimer to let passersby know the animal is okay.

You can also set your navigation system to charge the battery to 80% when you reach your destination. This is enough power to keep your car comfortable.

Advanced driver assistance systems such as traction control and steering assist also utilize the drivetrain’s precise power delivery to assist in emergency maneuvers.

Under normal conditions, the Palisade Hybrid was able to maneuver adeptly around busy roads and construction sites.

It was quiet, comfortable and stable in the backcountry.

3 creative new features

2026 introduces two new interior features.

Calligraphy’s top model has a built-in UV-C germicidal light in the center console bin, which is likely to be a deal-breaker for some shoppers as a post-pandemic feature.

Another benefit is a warning light located just above the rear door latch to alert the occupants of oncoming vehicles. A sensor automatically locks the door, but an illuminated LED is a nice addition.

Finally, for anyone struggling to protect themselves in a taxi, Uber, or shuttle, Palisade introduces a solution that’s simply great, or wonderfully simple. That’s the LED light for the center row seat belt receiver.

Once you see them, you just wonder why it took so long to find this elegant solution to the common problem of buckling up when getting into a strange new car. All automakers should adopt it, and Hyundai should waive any patents it holds on this idea.

Why buy a 2026 Hyundai Palisade Hybrid?

There’s no more advanced and comfortable 3-row SUV on the market than the 2026 Hyundai Palisade Hybrid.

It’s spacious, advanced, attractive and competitively priced.

Adding hybrid power and efficiency to an already great vehicle should seal the deal for many shoppers.

Laney College athletic director John Beam, famous for his role in Netflix’s “Last Chance U” series, was shot on Thursday, Nov. 13, on the school’s campus in Oakland, Calif., and later died on Nov. 14, according to Oakland police.

Oakland Police Chief Floyd Mitchell announced Beam’s death at a press conference on November 14th.

Assistant Police Chief James Beer said it was a targeted attack, adding that the suspect and Beam were not close friends but knew each other, according to the Associated Press. Beers also said the suspect played soccer at Skyline High School, where Beam once coached, but did not play there during Beam’s tenure.

Oakland police arrested a suspect in connection with the shooting on November 14th.

Oakland Police Lt. Gloria Beltran said Alameda County sheriff’s deputies arrested Cedric Irving Jr., 27, at a high-speed rail station in suburban Oakland. Beltran said Irving could face murder charges.

This is the second shooting on an Oakland campus in two days, after a student was shot and injured at Skyline High School on Nov. 12.

Beam, 66, appeared on Season 5 of “Last Chance U,” a popular series about college football at the junior college level, focusing on players looking to turn their careers around. He served as the team’s head coach from 2012 to 2024.

Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee released a statement following the shooting.

“My thoughts are with Coach John Beam and his loved ones. We are praying for him,” Lee wrote. “Coach Beam was a giant in Oakland, a mentor, educator and lifeline for thousands of young people. For more than 40 years, he shaped leaders on and off the field, and our community is reeling with his family.”

The Peralta Community College District also released a statement, but did not name Beam.

“This is a frightening moment for our community. We encourage everyone to follow official instructions and rely only on verified communications from the district and law enforcement.”

Laney district spokesperson Mark Johnson added in an emailed statement to USA TODAY:

“We are stunned and heartbroken that this kind of violence has been perpetrated on our campus and on one of the most respected and beloved members of the Laney, Peralta and Oakland communities. John Beam was a renowned coach, teacher, mentor and leader whose influence extends far beyond athletics.”

The university was placed on lockdown and the campus was closed for the remainder of November 13th. The campus reopened on November 14th.

According to his biography, Beam produced 20 NFL players during his tenure as head coach at Laney College. He also sent over 100 players to the Division I level.

Penny has been discontinued, but you can still use it

0

Over the past decade, the cost of producing a penny has risen from 1.3 cents to 3.69 cents. Rising costs revealed the problem.

play

For more than two centuries, Americans have trusted the penny as part of their everyday currency. However, once President Donald Trump took office, he noticed a problem: demand for pennies was decreasing while production costs were rising. This placed an increasingly unnecessary financial burden on American families.

To save American taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars, President Trump, along with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, made the decision to end production of the penny.

A historic decision for American consumers

Now, the historic American penny will no longer be produced.

To be clear, the penny remains legal tender. If you have a dime in your pocket, I recommend using it.

So why make this decision now?

Over the past decade, the cost of producing a penny has risen from 1.3 cents to 3.69 cents. This rising cost, along with the modernization of the market and the decline in demand for its currency units, revealed the problem.

Americans simply weren’t getting their money’s worth.

By ceasing American Penny production, taxpayers will save approximately $56 million annually in materials costs alone, not to mention savings in facility usage and energy consumption.

As stewards of Americans’ money, the federal government has a duty to manage its resources responsibly. Here at Treasury, we take that responsibility seriously.

It no longer makes economic sense to continue minting pennies, and ending their production reflects the sound, common sense fiscal management that continues to be a hallmark of President Trump’s administration.

Stopping Penny Production Puts Taxpayers First

As a public servant, it is my responsibility to manage public resources carefully and transparently. Every time we save money on production, less money is taken out of the budget and ultimately benefits taxpayers.

Ending the production of the penny will require making difficult decisions to avoid increasingly unnecessary spending and modernizing the monetary system to reflect current economic realities.

At Treasury, we respect tradition. But tradition in itself is not enough to justify the ongoing losses.

Government must evolve when costs and technology require it. President Trump and his administration are working day and night to put American taxpayers first and ensure that America remains the world’s predominant superpower.

To achieve this, it is necessary to improve the fiscal system, including currency production.

How will everyday financial transactions be affected?

Some business owners say fewer pennies in circulation are creating new problems. For example, some fast food chains have already started rounding cash payments to the nearest 5 cents. These developments reflect the healthy adaptation of the market and the evolution of payment habits.

Our approach predicts that as the number of pennies minted decreases, the coin will gradually be withdrawn from circulation. In the meantime, we remain in close contact with the Federal Reserve, commercial banks, retailers and the public to ease the transition.

We expect companies to apply rounding practices in a fair, consistent and transparent manner. To support this transition, Treasury is working closely with POS system providers to ensure they are equipped with systems that accurately handle rounding and correctly calculate sales tax.

In the meantime, please consult your state’s tax authorities for specific guidelines and updates, and contact your state and local representatives for further action.

Canada, Australia and New Zealand have already successfully phased out the penny, demonstrating that businesses and consumers value fair and transparent rounding practices.

These international examples give us confidence that our country too will succeed.

worth the last two cents

Dear American Citizen: Your penny remains valid, your change remains safe, and your Treasury will act in the best interest of the country. Once essential, pennies have become more of a cost burden than a cost-effective tool.

By taking this step, we will protect taxpayer money, streamline operations, and align our currency with the way Americans use it today. The Treasury Department remains committed to maintaining confidence in our currency and building a financial system that puts Americans first.

Paul Ingrassia takes new job in Trump administration after racist text

0

Paul Ingrassia, a former troubled candidate in the special counsel’s office, has taken a new job in the Trump administration.

play

  • Former Trump candidate Paul Ingrassia has been appointed deputy general counsel for the General Services Administration.
  • Ingrassia previously withdrew his nomination to head the Office of Special Counsel, citing a lack of Republican support.
  • His resignation followed reports that he had sent racist and anti-Semitic text messages.

Paul Ingrassia, who declined the nomination to head the Office of Special Counsel after President Donald Trump reportedly sent a series of racist and anti-Semitic texts, has taken on a new role within the administration, according to reports.

Ingrassia’s alleged comments, including one that said he had “Nazi tendencies,” led some Senate Republicans to publicly say they did not support his appointment. Less than a month later, Politico first reported on Nov. 13 that the former podcaster, now the White House liaison for the Department of Homeland Security, told colleagues in an email that he was leaving his position to become deputy general counsel for the General Services Administration, which oversees federal buildings, purchasing and technology.

Ingrassia, 30, reportedly said, “It has been an incredible honor to serve with you all, Secretary (Kristi) Noem and President Trump.” “I truly feel that this group is the most powerful group of political appointees in the federal government, not only because of the work ethic of this group, but above all because of their character and integrity.”

Ingrassia said President Trump called him into his office on Nov. 12 and offered him the job, Politico reported. A White House official told the press that Ingrassia is “a very valuable addition to the GSA and will successfully implement President Trump’s America First policy.” Ingrassia has already started his new job, CNN reported. Unlike positions in the Office of Special Counsel, this position does not require Senate confirmation.

GSA did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment.

Ingrassia’s new job comes on the heels of several other Republican officials linked to Nazi symbols and ideology, including reports that members of a Young Republican group were joking about gas chambers, a swastika found inside a U.S. flag in a Republican lawmaker’s office, and revelations that an online neo-Nazi influencer is married to a local Michigan Republican.

Ingrassia’s new job comes after there was not enough Republican support for the whistleblower office position.

Ingrassia’s new role comes less than a month after he said on social media that he would withdraw his nomination to be the top special counsel and would not appear at his confirmation hearing on Oct. 23 at the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee “unfortunately, there are not enough Republican votes at this time.”

In May, President Trump nominated Ingrassia, a conservative lawyer and commentator, to head the Office of the Special Counsel, an independent agency that protects federal whistleblowers and enforces civil service laws. But several Republican senators said they would not support Mr. Ingrassia as leader.

Based on public statements, apparent non-voters included Sens. Rick Scott of Florida, James Lankford of Oklahoma, and Ron Johnson of Wisconsin. Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader John Thune of South Dakota last month encouraged the White House not to move forward with Ingrassia’s confirmation.

Prior to Ingrassia’s hearing, Thune even told reporters, “He’s going to fail.”

The Republican lawmakers’ decision came after Politico reported a text chat in which Ingrassia said he had “Nazi tendencies” and thought the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday should be “thrown into the seventh camp of hell.”

The report also said Ingrassia called for the elimination of other holidays that recognize black culture in the United States, such as Juneteenth and Black History Month.

What U.S. intervention says about President Trump’s Venezuela strategy

0

play

military action. Secret operation. “Big stick” diplomacy

The United States has a long and checkered history of direct and indirect intervention in the political, economic, and social affairs of Latin American countries for more than a century.

President Donald Trump’s administration has already made military attacks on civilian vessels suspected of carrying drugs from Venezuela, adding to this extensive record.

President Trump also ordered a platoon of U.S. warships, fighter jets, drones, and thousands of military and special forces troops for potential operations in or on Venezuela as part of a pressure campaign against President Nicolas Maduro. President Trump appears to be placing the blame for gangs and drugs on America’s streets on leftist dictator Maduro. According to the latest reports, President Trump has not yet made a final decision on what he intends to do in Venezuela.

Watch: Trump insults Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro

President Trump told Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro the following about why the United States was offered to invest in Venezuela’s natural resources:

But some experts and former officials have warned that Trump needs to tread carefully in Venezuela or risk tangled in American blood and treasure in a region where various forms of intervention have been repeatedly attempted with mixed results.

“This could be a very troubling situation,” said Brett Bruen, a former U.S. diplomat who served in Venezuela. “Yes, Trump should look at ways to help restore democracy in Venezuela. Yes, he should undermine drug trafficking in Venezuela. But this is not the way to do it. It’s in Maduro’s hands,” said Bruen, who served as the White House’s director of international engagement in the Obama administration. He currently runs a consulting firm, Global Situation Room. Bruen added that if President Trump launches an attack on Venezuela, Maduro could resort to “asymmetric attacks” against, for example, American tourists and business travelers in Latin America.

Still, Will Freeman, a Latin America researcher at the Council on Foreign Relations think tank, said there are many examples of U.S. intervention in Latin America being “destructive” for the countries and peoples involved, but the situation is not that simple. This intervention is often welcomed, he said. Freeman noted that recent public opinion polls in Mexico indicate that a significant percentage of the population (about 30%) is open to the idea of a unilateral attack by the United States or special operations targeting the country’s cartels. “For people living under cartels, gangs, and predatory governments, their biggest concern is not U.S. involvement, but their own safety.”

Here we take a look at some of the notable US interventions in Latin America, why they happened, and what impact they had.

Guatemalan coup d’état, 1954

What was your goal? Declassified CIA documents reveal that the US sought to remove democratically elected Guatemalan President Jacobo Arbenz, This was at least in part because he was implementing land reforms that affected the exploitative labor practices of the United Fruit Company, based in the United States. For the Truman administration, which gave the green light to this project, Arbenz’s consideration for the rural poor had a hint of communism, a conspiracy of the times.

what happened? The CIA directed Operation PBSUCCESS, a secret program to foster dissent and train and finance anti-government rebels. The CIA considered assassinating Arbenz, according to documents in declassified CIA records. However, he resigned as president and went into exile before that could happen.

What was the impact? The United States helped establish a military dictatorship under Carlos Castillo Armas, whose policies ultimately led to a civil war and massive human rights violations, during which more than 200,000 Guatemalans were killed or forcibly disappeared. Freeman, who is from Latin America, said the coup had closed off “the possibility of democracy.”

Bay of Pigs Invasion, Cuba, 1961

What was your goal? The CIA trained Cuban exiles to invade Cuba, overthrow Fidel Castro’s socialist revolution and government, which had close ties to the Soviet Union, and install a regime friendly to the United States. what happened? The operation was poorly planned and executed, and rumors of a secret plan leaked out even before the invasion occurred. The Cuban military quickly quelled the invasion after one of the invasion forces landed in the wrong place, CIA bombers missed many targets, and the Cubans failed to rise up against Castro, contrary to the CIA’s expectations.

What was the impact? President John F. Kennedy’s administration was deeply embarrassed by this debacle. This increased Castro’s domestic popularity and brought Cuba closer to the Soviet Union. Historians say this led directly to the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. It is now generally believed that the Cold War was the closest we came to an all-out nuclear war.

Dominican Republic intervention, 1965

What was your goal? President Lyndon Johnson initially sent approximately 400 U.S. Marines to Santo Domingo to rescue Americans trapped and in danger by the outbreak of civil war. Prime Minister Johnson also wanted to prevent the return of ousted President Juan Bosch due to a growing left-wing movement. The US feared he might become a communist.

what happened? The size of the US Marine Corps rapidly expanded. Ultimately, thousands of U.S. soldiers became involved in what became known as the “Dominican intervention,” first as part of a unilateral military force and later in conjunction with an international force assembled by the Organization of American States.

What was the impact? The United States helped form a government under President Joaquín Balaguer. Mr. Balagar pursued a strong public works program, building hospitals and schools. However, the government was hurt by reports of political repression, enforced disappearances, and assassinations of opponents.

Invasion of Panama, 1989

What was your goal? Thousands of American soldiers arrived in Panama by land, sea, and air to oust de facto leader Manuel Noriega. Noriega was a former key American ally who was recruited by the CIA to help the United States stop the spread of communism in Central America. President Bush wanted to bring Noriega to the United States on charges of drug trafficking and money laundering. The administration also suspects him of being a double agent for Cuban intelligence.

what happened? In Operation Just Cause, ordered by President George H.W. Bush, more than 20,000 U.S. troops invaded the country and took control of military and infrastructure facilities. They encountered scattered resistance. Officially, 514 Panamanian soldiers and civilians died in the invasion. However, some local reports put the number at double that. 23 U.S. military personnel were killed.

Noriega was eventually arrested by U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents., But that was only after they planned to have him leave the Vatican embassy in Panama City, where he had taken refuge. The plan included having speakers blast music in his direction at deafening volumes for 24 hours. According to the official account, some of the songs played included Alice Cooper’s “No More Mr. Nice Guy” and Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid.”

What was the impact? Critics of the episode say it is an example of America’s blatant disregard for national sovereignty. Noriega’s opponent, Guillermo Endara, was sworn in as president hours after the invasion with support from the U.S. military.

Haiti intervention, 1994

What was your goal? U.S. involvement in Haiti dates back to 1915 and much earlier, when President Woodrow Wilson sent 340 U.S. Marines to the island to restore order and maintain political and economic stability in the Caribbean. In 1994, US troops arrived again as part of Operation Democracy Preservation, part of a multinational force aimed at reinstating Haiti’s democratically elected president, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, into power. Aristide had been ousted in a military coup three years earlier.

what happened? U.S. troops landed in Haiti without resistance and were welcomed by enthusiastic crowds weary of three years of military rule. The invasion force consisted of approximately 25,000 military personnel from all military services, supported by two aircraft carriers and extensive air support.

What was the impact? Haiti’s leadership quickly surrendered, and bloodshed was largely averted. Aristide returns as Haiti’s leader. However, the intervention in Haiti was a short-lived success. Ten years later, in 2004, when President Aristide’s government was again overthrown, the United States led a new international intervention.

American intervention continued

  • In Chile in the 1970s, the United States worked to end the presidency of Marxist physician Salvador Allende, thereby supporting the rise of the authoritarian dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet.
  • In the 1980s, the Reagan administration unsuccessfully attempted to overthrow Nicaragua’s socialist Sandinista government and provided illegal aid to the Contra rebels, leading to the Iran-Contra scandal.
  • The United States provided hundreds of millions of dollars in military aid to El Salvador’s military during the civil war in the 1980s as part of its Cold War policy against left-wing rebels.
  • President Ronald Reagan orders the U.S. military to invade a Caribbean island. of Grenada was invaded in 1983 because the country’s pro-Marxist government was believed to pose a threat to American medical students studying on the island. The Grenada government was overthrown in about a week. 19 American soldiers were killed.
  • During President Trump’s first term, the White House recognized opposition leader Juan Guaidó as Venezuela’s interim president in 2019 and provided him with political and financial support.

If you’d rather bake cookies or watch Christmas movies than carve pumpkins or dress up, the good news is that Halloween is in your rearview mirror and Thanksgiving and Christmas are next on your holiday calendar.

There’s no clearer sign that spooky season is over than the disappearance of the Spirit Halloween Store and the arrival of the Spirit Christmas Store. Epstein worried about whether to wear a tie if called to testify by Congress

Mr. Epstein said in an email that he was asked whether he believed reporters were framed by Mr. Trump. Epstein was indicted during President Trump’s first term.

play

WASHINGTON – Disgraced financier and accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein spent 13 months in prison, but as federal investigators closed in on sex trafficking charges, the question he posed was whether he would have to testify before Congress and whether he would have to wear a tie.

But in May 2019, Epstein said in an email to author Michael Wolff that he was being pursued by journalists who suspected President Donald Trump had framed him during his first term.

Concerns about Epstein’s investigation were revealed in emails among 23,000 pages of documents subpoenaed from his estate and released on November 12 by the House Oversight and Accountability Committee.

President Trump has vehemently denied knowing about Epstein’s wrongdoing and said the release of the emails was part of a Democratic conspiracy to distract from his administration’s accomplishments. White House press secretary Caroline Levitt said the emails mentioning President Trump were not proof of anything.

In an email to Wolf, Epstein claimed that he had “never before been charged with providing sexual massages for money to a woman in his home.” He said all the girls were paid and returned.

But a federal indictment accuses Epstein of abusing dozens of underage girls and trafficking them to celebrities and wealthy men. Epstein was routinely photographed wearing open-necked button-down shirts and polo shirts, whether he was standing next to future President Trump or not.

Epstein wrote on May 30, 2019: “My team is concerned that I will receive a subpoena for a meeting. Do I have to wear a tie?”

How Cynthia Erivo made her ‘Wicked: For Good’ character ‘witchy’

0

play

Cynthia Erivo has an inventive way of sniffing out her characters.

So how does she do it? While many stars rely on thorough research and method acting to embody their roles, Erivo’s magic secret is perfume. And even she was surprised by how effective the scent was in the captivating blockbuster film Wicked: For Good (released November 21).

In “Wicked: Part One,” which was released last fall, “I wore Le Labo Lys 41,” Erivo told USA TODAY in a recent interview for her upcoming book “Simply More” (on sale Nov. 18). “In Part 2, you may not believe me when I say this name, but it’s true. There’s a scent called Witchy Woo, by a brand called Vyrao. When I first smelled it, I thought, ‘There’s no way it’s going to work. It’s not going to work. I don’t like this. It’s too on my nose.'”

But after applying it to her hands, Erivo continued, “It caught me off guard a lot and it felt really good.” “I couldn’t get it out of my head, and for some reason it affected my body chemistry, so I went back to get it.”

In this fantasy film musical, the three-time Oscar nominee plays the misunderstood Elphaba, who leads a war against the duplicitous Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) to save the animals of Oz. Erivo layered the floral scent of Squirrel 41 with the earthy tones of Witchy Woo to capture the different sides of Elphaba, who is labeled an evil witch by Oz’s corrupt government, but is still a caring idealist on the inside.

“I still wanted to get something from the beginning, but I wanted it to grow, and Witchy Woo is how it grows,” says Erivo. “And sometimes I wore real oud. Oud is a part of me and something I wear a lot. So it’s a combination of three perfumes that makes Elphaba.”

How Cynthia Erivo plans to ‘re-center’ her whirlwind ‘Wicked: For Good’ press tour

In her self-help memoir, Simply More, Erivo, 38, reveals small ways to calm herself amidst her chaotic schedule, such as preparing snacks from home to work and wearing a comfortable matching pajama set or robe at home. She also adopted a new self-care routine for the second leg of her grueling two-week “Wicked” press tour, which took in Sao Paulo, Paris, London, Singapore and New York.

“One thing I didn’t do last time was plan a lymphatic massage,” says Erivo. “They help remove toxins and water retention in the body, but at the same time they make me feel really good. It really helps me reconnect. So I’ve tried to plan[these massages]at every place I’m going to go.”

She’s also an avid runner, and “when I’m in these hotels, I basically have a treadmill in my bedroom. I can just roll out of bed and get on the treadmill,” says Erivo, who also keeps her favorite fruit and essential oils on hand. “I don’t want anything because I’m just getting myself together. And this tour I have my best friend (Capri Hakim) with me. Last time I couldn’t bring him, but this time I was allowed to bring my best friend. It’s just someone who can help me refocus and get my focus back. So it’s a small thing.”

As for fragrance, Erivo is currently looking for one to wear in her one-woman play, Dracula, which opens in London’s West End in February. The gothic horror drama will be directed by Kip Williams, who won a Tony Award for Best Actress last Broadway season for her one-woman play “The Picture of Dorian Gray,” starring Sarah Snook.

“There are 23 characters, so we’ve scoured the world to find the perfect perfume for Dracula!” Erivo says. “We’re trying to find something that represents them all.”

Starbucks Red Cup Day, holiday menu and merchandise drive biggest sale day

play

Starbucks is getting excited about the holiday season.

The specialty coffee chain announced its biggest sale day ever in North America on November 6, the day the Starbucks holiday menu and products including the popular glass Bearista cup go on sale.

And Thursday, November 13th, the company’s annual Red Cup Day, also became Red Letter Day for Starbucks. “We had the strongest Reusable Red Cup Day in our company’s history,” CEO Brian Nicol told employees in an internal letter shared with USA TODAY. “This is incredible. It shows what is possible if we continue to focus on our customers and set up our Green Apron partners to deliver a great experience in every coffeehouse.”

Nicol has overseen the “Return to Starbucks” strategy since the former Chipotle CEO left the company to become CEO of Starbucks in September 2024. Changes include simplifying and revamping the menu to reduce wait times and improve quality, as well as opening some new locations, renovating them, and closing some locations.

The company also faced the Red Cup Rebellion, an employee strike by Starbucks Workers United at some of its stores on November 13th. Starbucks Workers United, the union representing some of the chain’s baristas, will hold an event in conjunction with Red Cup Day, where drinks will be served free of charge in reusable Holiday Red Cups, while supplies last.

The company said less than 1% of its coffeehouses had been affected by the labor movement as of Nov. 13, and the vast majority of its more than 10,000 company-owned stores were open and serving customers as usual.

Nevertheless, Nicol offered encouragement for the company’s start to the holiday season.

“What struck me most was the comfort of the coffee house,” he said in a note. “The coffeehouse was well-staffed and supported by enthusiastic leaders. Partners worked as a team and had fun connecting with customers. Orders were taken with care and served on time, and our coffeehouse felt warm, welcoming, and full of joy.”

Starbucks reported positive U.S. same-store sales in September and October, following flat sales in the most recent quarter that ended Sept. 28, the company announced.

The increase is a sign that the company’s “Back to Starbucks” strategy, which includes “Green Apron Service,” an initiative to improve employee experience and customer service, is working, and customers are noticing, Nicol said.

“This is a Green Apron Service activity. It’s not just what you deliver, it’s how you deliver it,” he continued. “Every smile, every hello, and every personal note written on the cup counts. Our holiday drinks and reusable red cups bring customers in, but it’s the experiences our partners and your company create that keep them coming back.”

At the end of his memo, Nicol said, “I want to thank our employees for their great work, and thank you to our support teams for their dedication to making Green Apron Partners a success. Together, we are building the Green Wave. We are making the holiday season truly iconic, and we are delivering the best of Starbucks to our customers.”

President Trump asks the Justice Department to investigate Democratic politicians with ties to Epstein

0

Trump’s call came after House Democrats released emails from Epstein, a convicted sex offender, claiming the president “knew about the girls.”

play

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump says he is asking the Justice Department and the FBI to investigate Democratic members of Congress connected to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, including former President Bill Clinton, who claims he “spent the majority of his life” with him.

“I will be asking Attorney General Pam Bondi and the Department of Justice, along with our great patriots at the FBI, to investigate Jeffrey Epstein’s involvement and relationships with Bill Clinton, Larry Summers, Reid Hoffman, JPMorgan Chase, and many other people and institutions, and to uncover what was going on with them and with him,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Trump’s call came after Democrats on the House Oversight Committee released emails obtained from Epstein’s estate in which the late financier, who was friends with Trump for more than a decade, claimed the president “knew the girls.” “I’m the one who can bring him down,” Epstein wrote in another email.

Trump also called Republicans who are working with Democrats to force the full release of Epstein’s federal case file “soft and stupid” in a social media post and urged them to stop digging into the disgraced financier’s relationship with Epstein.

“Some weak Republicans have fallen into their hands because they are soft and stupid. Epstein is a Democrat and he is a Democratic problem, not a Republican problem!” Trump wrote. “Ask Bill Clinton, Reid Hoffman, and Larry Somers about Epstein. They know everything about him. We don’t need to waste our time on Trump. I have a country to run!”

Epstein socialized with wealthy people, celebrities and academics, many of whom were criticized for maintaining their relationships with Epstein even after his 2019 sex trafficking indictment and his 2008 plea to state child prostitution charges in Florida.

Clinton hosted Epstein in the White House in the 1990s, traveling on his jet. Mr. Summers, the Clinton administration’s Treasury secretary, maintained a casual email relationship with Mr. Epstein until 2017, according to emails released this week.

Epstein was a longtime client of JPMorgan Chase & Co., which was accused of aiding and abetting Epstein’s human trafficking ring. The bank reached a nine-figure settlement with Epstein’s accusers after they filed a lawsuit over the bank’s role in his finances.

Mr. Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn, helped facilitate Mr. Epstein’s donation to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Trump’s threats emerge as House calls for Justice Department to release all Epstein files

As of this week, Democrats had enough support to bypass House Republican leadership and introduce a bill on the floor that would force the Justice Department to release remaining files on Mr. Epstein, who committed suicide while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. Four Republicans signed the bill, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, a Trump ally.

The other Republicans were Thomas Massie of Kentucky, who has been leading the bill along with Lauren Boebert of Colorado, Nancy Mace of South Carolina, and Democrat Ro Khanna of California.

With Arizona Rep. Adelita Grijalva’s swearing-in this week, the expulsion petition reached the 218-vote threshold. House Speaker Mike Johnson said he would vote on the bill next week. It would also need to pass the Senate.

In a statement to USA TODAY on Nov. 14, Massey accused Johnson, Trump, Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel of trying to kill the petition.

“Next week could be a critical week for survivors of Epstein’s sex trafficking scheme, as we force a record vote in the House of Representatives on the release of Epstein’s files,” Massey said. “President Trump and Speaker Johnson can still be on the right side by encouraging YEA voting.”

Trump’s name appears in emails obtained by Democrats from Epstein’s estate and released on November 12, sparking a new wave of scrutiny over his friendship with the convicted sex offender. The president said he had a falling out with Epstein after he “stole” a young female worker, and the White House announced that their friendship ended because Epstein was a disgusting person.

One of Epstein’s emails claims that President Trump “knew about the girls.” Another official said Trump “spent hours at his home” with one of the victims. Republicans later identified the person as Epstein’s prominent accuser, Virginia Giuffre, a former employee of Trump and a spa worker at a Palm Beach resort, but did not bring charges against Trump. President Trump has forcefully denied any wrongdoing in what he calls the “Epstein hoax.”

“These emails prove nothing except the fact that President Trump did nothing wrong,” White House press secretary Caroline Levitt said this week.

Giuffre died by suicide in April. She said in an unsealed deposition in her defamation lawsuit against Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell that she was forced to have sex with powerful men as a teenager.

Epstein died by suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.

Charlotte, North Carolina, expects surge in immigration officers, officials say

play

As the city of Charlotte, North Carolina prepares for a surge in immigration raids, a large number of federal immigration agents could arrive in Charlotte, North Carolina, as early as Saturday, November 15, the local sheriff announced in a statement.

Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry L. McFadden said he was told by two separate federal officials this week that U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents would arrive in the Charlotte area “as early as this Saturday or early next week.”

McFadden said federal officials have not released specific details about the operation, including how many officers will be sent to the city or what their mission will be. The sheriff added that his agency “does not participate in any enforcement actions by Immigration and Customs Enforcement and CBP.”

In response to a question about anticipated operations, Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary for public affairs at the Department of Homeland Security, said, “We are not discussing future operations or potential operations.”

The development comes as the Trump administration expands the deployment of federal agents to Democratic-run cities across the country, including Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Memphis, Chicago and Portland.

The deployment of federal agents and the National Guard has been challenged in court, drawing scrutiny over what officials see as their use of force and increasingly aggressive tactics.

The planned operation in Charlotte also comes amid reports that officials have departed from Chicago, which has become a flashpoint in President Donald Trump’s mass deportation campaign.

“We’re not leaving Chicago,” McLaughlin said on the X show this week, in response to reports of a rollback in immigration enforcement in the nation’s third-largest city.

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles (D) said local officials don’t know what immigration officials are planning and urged residents to remain calm.

“We understand that this news brings uncertainty and anxiety to many people in our community,” she said in a statement. “Everyone in our community deserves to feel safe, and I will do everything in my power to keep our community informed and make sure everyone feels safe and knows their rights.”

The government continues to dust off the cobwebs even after the longest shutdown. live

Federal workers are expected to get their paychecks back in the coming days after President Trump signed the bill ending the government shutdown on Nov. 12, and states are to “promptly” distribute SNAP food benefits.

WASHINGTON – As the federal government continues to reopen two days after the end of the longest shutdown in history, advocates warn that delays in full paychecks, on-time flights and food supplies could continue.

President Donald Trump signed the bill on Nov. 12, ending the 43-day shutdown. For records, the White House measured the shutdown at 42 days, 22 hours, and 25 minutes.

As the government gets back on its feet, workers are expecting their paychecks back within days, airlines are reassigning crews and planes in response to flight cancellations, and states are scrambling to distribute food benefits in the lead-up to Thanksgiving.

Here’s what you need to know about the government, and how the country is recovering from the shutdown.

Vance criticizes Senate Democrats to Schumer over shutdown

Vice President J.D. Vance said Democrats made a “huge political mistake” by demanding that the government be reopened and eventually moderate groups gave in.

“They put a lot of stress on our military, they didn’t pay air traffic controllers, they caused a lot of grounded flights, they caused a lot of people to miss out on food benefits, literally,” Vance said on Fox News. “We could have closed this exact deal 45 days ago.”

Most Democrats in the House and Senate voted against the Republican-backed government reopening bill. It passed with the support of six Democrats in the House and one independent who caucuses with seven Democrats in the Senate.

AP recipients felt like “pawns” during the shutdown

About 42 million people receive SNAP benefits, but many had their benefits temporarily suspended during the government shutdown, leaving them scrambling for food banks and other assistance to stave off hunger.

Leah Skinner told USA TODAY that after two heart attacks, her hours at McDonald’s were cut short and she had to rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Program to get the protein and vegetables she and her 16-year-old son needed. But the shutdown felt like a game being played over her head.

“It’s like a chess game and they’re using us as pawns,” Skinner, who lives in Palmer Lake, Colorado, said of the funding battle in Washington. “We are the most sacrificed piece on the board and the least important.”

Many government employees, who have been out of work for more than a month during the government shutdown, could start getting paid as early as this weekend.

A senior Trump administration official confirmed to USA TODAY that the departments are aiming to send out checks to cover the outstanding balance between November 15th and 19th.

Officials say timing may vary because each agency has a different payroll provider and payment process. Since most agencies are currently in the middle of their pay period, the checks will only be eligible until November 1st, and for now, the remainder of November’s pay will be included in the employee’s next paycheck.

The White House Office of Management and Budget quickly issued guidance after the shutdown ended directing federal agencies to open and furloughing employees to return in a “prompt and orderly manner” starting Nov. 13.

OMB Director Russell Vought sent a letter to agency leaders on November 12, stating that “employees furloughed due to budget shortfalls should be directed to return to work on November 13.”

An estimated 750,000 workers were furloughed during the shutdown.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced on November 13 that Transportation Security Administration employees who provided “exemplary” service during the shutdown would receive $10,000 bonuses.

“They deserve recognition for their hidden patriotism,” Noem said while recognizing two TSA agents at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport, Reiko Walker, who worked second shift, and Ashley Richardson, who canceled her trip.

The bonus money comes from $13.2 billion, Noem said, which President Trump has saved by cutting costs since taking office.

Approximately 13,000 air traffic controllers and 50,000 TSA employees continued to work as essential personnel during the shutdown. However, many people were absent due to seeking other income during the suspension of pay. President Trump has proposed giving air traffic controllers with perfect attendance a $10,000 bonus.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said nearly 20,000 flights were delayed during the shutdown due to staffing shortages.

Despite the grounding ending, airlines and aviation experts warned travelers to brace for further disruption throughout the week as crews and aircraft are thrown out of position due to flight cancellations.

Last week, Duffy ordered flight cancellations at 40 major airports, citing staffing shortages. The ministry froze the reduction in flights by 6%, citing a “rapid decline in controller calls.”

“If the FAA safety team determines that trend lines are moving in the right direction, we will provide a path to resume normal operations,” Duffy said in a Nov. 12 statement.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Nov. 13 directed that SNAP food benefits be reinstated “quickly” as the government reopens, but advocates said it could take several days for states to resume payments.

The bill signed by President Trump on Nov. 12 to end the government shutdown funded the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for the entire fiscal year, ending Sept. 30.

“State officials must take immediate steps to ensure households receive their full November allocations as soon as possible,” Patrick Penn, the undersecretary for food, nutrition and consumer services, said in a statement. “State officials should immediately resume issuing November and December combined quotas to new certified applicants who apply after the 15th.”th This month’s. ”

At least 16 states have already announced full benefits over the weekend, according to research from the Center for Food Research and Action. Another 13 companies issued or began issuing partial or blended payments.

Jessica Garon, a spokeswoman for the American Public Welfare Association, told The Associated Press that most states will be able to issue full benefits within three days.

Would you buy the improved Ford Maverick or the more powerful Raptor R?

  • Some of the concept cars on display at SEMA are straight out of an enthusiast’s dream.
  • Ford is showcasing a potential package to make its little Maverick pickup more powerful and the Raptor R even flashier.

Some of the world’s most popular automakers put their wild and fascinating concept cars on full display at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) convention in Las Vegas from November 4th to 7th.

Ford Motor Company has debuted two concepts that are legal in 50 states, despite how heavily modified they are. One of the concepts is a more powerful interpretation of the automaker’s smallest pickup truck, the Ford Maverick. The other is an even more monstrous version of the Raptor R off-road truck.

This Ford Maverick concept is the most powerful yet

The Ford Maverick first arrived in late 2021 as a 2022 model. After four Maverick models were introduced, the light pickup truck became a hit, as the Blue Oval’s third-quarter sales results show.

Unlike most trucks on the market, the Maverick is small and has a standard hybrid powertrain. This is the antithesis of Ford trucks like the F-150.

The nameplate is attracting a new demographic, with “nearly 60 percent of buyers” becoming first-time Ford owners, according to company sales figures.

Automakers have experimented with body styles and created several trims that dramatically change the design and characteristics of light trucks. It features street truck trim (Robo), off-road trim (Tremor), and a fully loaded Lariat trim that adds everything but the kitchen sink. While Ford has made a solid attempt to offer a variety of styles, its pickups have historically lacked power.

Introducing the Maverick 300T Street Truck Concept. It features the upgraded turbocharger that Ford uses in the Mustang. The concept truck, aptly named 300T, produces 300 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque, which is impressive for its size. This concept truck has 50 more horses and 40 more pound-feet of torque than the current Maverick. In addition to the power increase, the truck also features electric Mustang Mach-E GT SUV wheels and some suspension upgrades.

The Ford F-150 Raptor R concept truck has immense power.

The F-150 Raptor R off-road truck is the most powerful version of the American automaker’s most popular full-size truck, the F-150. This is already a marvel of modern engineering from a power standpoint, so the improved version is even more exciting for gearheads.

Ford’s F-150 Raptor R concept truck on display at SEMA is powered by a 5.2-liter V8 engine and supercharger that produces a massive 900 horsepower. That’s a whopping 180 more than the stock Raptor R.

The F-150 Raptor R Concept also features a high-performance exhaust system and auxiliary lighting.

Ford offers extensive stock customization options for trucks

While you can modify your Ford truck yourself with aftermarket parts, the Blue Oval offers upgrades for power, towing, off-road, and more straight from the factory. From the Maverick to the Ranger to the F-150 and F-150 Lightning, most Ford trucks are offered in rugged off-road trim and final configurations packed with technology and creature comforts.

Ford’s F-150 full-size pickup is practical and versatile. It has a wide range of engine options and is available in eight different trims. The company also offers a variety of cab styles (two-door, four-door) and bed lengths for the F-150..

Would you want to drive anything other than these concept cars if Ford decided to bring them to market?
