Infant formula botulism lawsuit filed after ByHeart recall

0

“We are deeply disappointed and will do everything we can to support you,” By Heart co-owners wrote in a letter on Nov. 11 after learning of the botulism outbreak among infants.

Byheart, the Next Generation infant nutrition company at the center of a national infant formula recall, is being sued by the parents of at least two infants who have fallen ill in the ongoing infant botulism outbreak.

On November 8, “out of an abundance of caution” By Heart voluntarily recalled two batches of By Heart Whole Nutrient Infant Milk during an investigation into an infant botulism outbreak by the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. On November 11, the company expanded its recall to include all batches of ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula cans and Anywhere Packs nationwide.

According to the FDA, as of Friday, Nov. 14, a total of 23 infants with suspected or confirmed infant botulism diagnoses and confirmed exposure to ByHeart Whole Nutrition infant formula (various lots) have been reported from 13 U.S. states. No deaths have been reported so far, but all 23 infants have been hospitalized, the agency said.

Stephen and Eulanie Dexter of Flagstaff, Arizona, and Michael and Hannah Everett of Richmond, Kentucky, filed suit in federal court against Byhart after their babies contracted the rare and potentially fatal disease. Both families claim that Byhart was the direct cause of their infant’s botulism.

USA TODAY contacted ByHeart on Nov. 15 but did not receive a response.

We will introduce the family story and the current state of the recall.

Why are families suing ByHeart?

According to a federal complaint filed Nov. 12 in U.S. District Court in Arizona, the Dexters said they fed their baby girl Beihart infant formula from July 2025 until she showed signs of infant botulism. The family said the child was “born healthy, alert and happy” on July 5, and then decided on July 8 to introduce BiHeart Milk as a supplement to breast milk, the complaint continues.

By Aug. 21, the baby began experiencing “stomach discomfort and gas,” and her feedings were steadily decreasing, according to the family. “She appeared hungry, but as soon as the bottle touched her lips, she refused to eat. Eventually, she stopped eating altogether,” the complaint states.

After initially being diagnosed with candidiasis, a common fungal infection in the mouth, the girl’s symptoms worsened until Aug. 31 when her parents were “unable to wake her,” according to the complaint. The child had to be airlifted from the emergency room to Phoenix Children’s Hospital on the night of Sept. 2, according to the complaint. Upon arrival, he received an intravenous fluid, a feeding tube and antivenom, as well as occupational, physical and speech therapy.

The Dexters’ baby was discharged from the hospital on Sept. 13 with a feeding tube, but now cannot be left alone while awake, according to the complaint.

Similarly, the Everetts said their 4-month-old baby girl was “happy and healthy” until she was given Byheart infant formula, according to a complaint filed Nov. 12 in federal court in the Eastern District of Kentucky. The parents said their child became “lethargic and constipated” after ingesting the formula in early November, according to the complaint.

Within a few days, the baby began exhibiting “neurological symptoms, including an inability to feed from a bottle,” the suit says. The girl was admitted to the hospital on Nov. 9, where she was diagnosed with infantile botulism and ordered to undergo antitoxin treatment, according to the complaint.

The Kentucky Department of Public Health began investigating the situation and quickly determined that the child had received one of the Byheart infant formulas that was originally recalled, according to the complaint.

“It was really scary,” Hannah Everett told CBS News. “You know, we felt like we failed as parents in a way.”

Both families are seeking medical expenses, a jury trial and other damages incurred during the baby’s hospitalization.

What does ByHeart say about the formula recall?

Byheart co-owners Mia Funt and Ron Belldegrun shared a letter on the company’s website and social media pages on Nov. 11, saying in part: “Upon learning of this outbreak on Friday evening, we immediately responded to all ByHeart batches with our own large-scale In addition, we have provided the FDA with full and unrestricted access to all of our facilities and products for investigation, which is conducted regularly at our facilities. We will share the results of our own tests from time to time.” ”

“The most important thing we want you to know at this time is that all Byheart products must be discarded. We understand that switching formulas is not an easy process or decision, and our website has resources to help,” the letter reads. “We are very sorry, but we will do our best to support you.”

The company added, “It is important for you to know that neither we, the FDA, nor the CDC have found Clostridium botulinum spores or toxins in unopened cans of Byheart formula.”

Baby formula recall: See U.S. states with reported cases of infant botulism

According to the FDA, 22 of the 23 confirmed cases for which onset information is available had onset dates between August 9 and November 11. In addition, the 22 infants for whom age and gender information were available ranged in age from 16 to 200 days, and 10 (45%) were female.

The U.S. states where cases of infant botulism have been reported are:

  • arizona
  • California
  • kentucky
  • illinois
  • minnesota
  • Michigan
  • new jersey
  • north carolina
  • Oregon
  • pennsylvania
  • rhode island
  • texas
  • washington

How far is the FDA investigating?

In a Nov. 14 update on the investigation, the FDA said it was conducting on-site inspections and collecting samples to determine the location of the contamination.

“My hope right now is that we can get the virus out before these kids get seriously ill, before they need ventilators,” Hannah Everett said, according to CBS News.

Stephen Dexter, 44, told the outlet that he never imagined “that a product designed for the helpless, developing population of America could cause such serious consequences.”

What are the symptoms of infant botulism?

According to the CDC, parents or guardians who experience the following symptoms in their infants should seek immediate medical attention:

  • poor feeding
  • loss of head control
  • difficulty swallowing
  • decrease in facial expressions

Symptoms of botulism can take several weeks to develop, so parents or guardians who have recently fed their infants with the recalled formula should continue to be cautious.

What should consumers do?

ByHeart said consumers who purchased ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula cans and Anywhere Packs “must immediately discontinue use and discard the products.”

“If your infant is experiencing symptoms associated with infant botulism, please contact your healthcare provider immediately,” the company said in its Nov. 11 recall. To report an illness or adverse event, consumers can:

Parents with questions can contact the company’s experts at hello@byheart.com. For more information, visit byheart.com or call 1 (833) 429-4327. According to the company, it is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Texas A&M, Alabama prospect list

0

play

  • Texas A&M overcame a 27-point deficit to defeat South Carolina 31-30, marking the largest upset in school history.
  • Quarterback Marcell Reed’s strong second-half performance may have made him the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy.
  • In other important games, Oklahoma defeated Alabama and Notre Dame defeated Pittsburgh, both of which affected the makeup of the national playoffs.

No. 3 Texas A&M, which lost 30-3 to South Carolina at halftime, remained undefeated, made school and SEC history, and was on track to reach the conference championship game, potentially putting quarterback Marcell Reed at the front of the Heisman Trophy race with a big upset for a 31-30 victory.

The Gamecocks’ lead steadily narrowed, and the Aggies took the lead for good on EJ Smith’s 4-yard touchdown run four minutes into the fourth quarter. At that point, a reversal was a foregone conclusion. South Carolina was now falling apart in a classic A&M second half barrage.

The 27-point comeback was the largest in school history. Since 2004, SEC teams are 0-286 when trailing by 27 points or more.

A win over the Siamcocks doesn’t change the numbers for the SEC Championship. That path still goes through a Black Friday showdown with No. 10 Texas and will be influenced by results in other conferences, which will determine how many teams end November with a league loss.

But by avoiding this hole, the Aggies can maintain two paths to the 12-team tournament. With one of the three teams in the Bowl Subdivision still remaining undefeated, A&M could lose to the Longhorns and lose again in the SEC Championship, still holding room for a comfortable at-large berth.

On an individual level, Reed’s second half could overtake Indiana’s No. 2 quarterback Fernando Mendoza to take the Heisman Trophy driver’s seat, finally bringing clarity to one of the most volatile races in recent history.

After two interceptions and a fumble, the Gamecocks got back to scoring in the first half, with Reed rebounding and completing 16 of 20 for 298 yards and three scores in the final two quarters.

After a dominant six-quarter run that started in the second half against LSU and continued into last week’s win over Missouri, the sluggish start against USC should serve as a wake-up call heading into the game that will determine where the Aggies land in the final playoff rankings.

But A&M joins No. 10 Oklahoma State as one of the clear winners in Saturday’s game, along with losers like No. 4 Alabama and South Florida.

winner

Oklahoma

The Sooners converted 3 of 13 third-down attempts, averaged 2.6 yards per carry, gained 212 yards of offense, and still defeated Alabama 23-21, securing their biggest win of the Brent Venables era and likely vaulting them to the top of the at-large league. A plus 3 sales margin made the difference. With the offense stuck in neutral and unable to move at the line of scrimmage, the Sooners’ defense made a number of big comebacks, from a pick-six in the first quarter, to a fumble recovery, to setting up a go-ahead field goal in the fourth quarter, to a game-clinching fourth-down stop near midfield with less than a minute left. In the grand scheme of things, this upset is good news for the SEC, which could send at least five teams to the tournament.

virgin

The No. 9 Fighting Irish passed their last real test of the regular season, defeating No. 23 Pittsburgh 37-15 by 147 rushing yards, scored by Jeremiah Love. Jeremiah Love’s score effectively sealed the All-American title with just two games left in November. This match ended early. Notre Dame led 21-3 at halftime and pushed that lead to 28-3 on the first drive of the third quarter. Currently 8-2 with Syracuse and Stanford ahead of them, only a surprise failure against a dominant opponent could keep the Irish out of the playoffs.

southern california

After trailing 21-7 at the half and having a hard time moving forward against Iowa’s physical defense, 18th-ranked USC scored 19 unanswered points to defeat the Hawkeyes 26-21 and remain in the Big Ten and playoff conversations. By retaining serve at home, the Trojans will face No. 6 Oregon State, which is still alive in the Big Ten race, next weekend. If Michigan wins a scoreless game against Ohio State, it will advance to a tiebreaker and earn a spot to face Indiana at Lucas Oil Stadium. The ability to handle the Hawkeyes highlights the growth USC has made since last season, which was a very disappointing Big Ten debut.

Michigan

Dominic Zvada made a 31-yard field goal as time expired, and the No. 17 Wolverines defeated Northwestern, 24-22, and were just one shot away from winning the Big Ten title and making the playoffs. Leading 21-9 early in the fourth quarter, Michigan turned the ball over on three consecutive possessions, including two interceptions by Bryce Underwood, and mounted a 50-yard drive with two minutes left to escape with the road win. The team in the nick of time to beat the Wildcats may not have a chance to beat Ohio State and then Indiana to earn the automatic bid, but the Wolverines are at least still in the tournament conversation and could become the third of four Big Ten teams in the field with an upset of the Buckeyes.

virginia

In the ACC, 19th-ranked Virginia bounced back from last week’s blowout loss to Wake Forest to beat Duke 34-17 and move one step closer to the conference championship game. One of the big reasons for the rebound was that Chandler Morris, who missed the game against the Demon Deacons with an injury, returned to center field for the Cavaliers and threw for 316 yards and two touchdowns. Coming off a rare big win in a close year, Virginia takes next weekend off to face rival Virginia Tech.

loser

Alabama

Looking forward, the big impact of the loss to OU will be felt in where Alabama ranks in the playoff rankings and whether the Crimson Tide ultimately earns a bye or hosts in the opener. After losing in the opener to Florida State, Alabama has won eight straight games and is in a very good position to make the tournament and potentially be the top seed in the SEC. But the Tide, who conceded the game due to an inadvertent turnover, will need to avoid disaster in the Iron Bowl against Auburn to avoid potentially missing out on the league championship game.

south florida

South Florida’s 41-38 loss to Navy dropped it to sixth place in the American League, ending any realistic chance of making the playoffs, but re-opening the door for the Midshipmen and East Carolina. This is very unfortunate. USF had a key win against Florida in September and was in position to advance to the American Championship Game behind one of the top FBS offenses. The blame lies with a defense that has fallen apart in recent weeks, allowing 338 rushing yards to Navy. The big winners after this loss are Tulane, which now has a clear path to the championship game, and No. 25 James Madison, the Sun Belt leader who benefits from the turmoil in the United States.

bobby petrino

Petrino lost 23-22 to LSU and fell to 0-5 in the interim, so he has no chance of securing a full-time job to replace Sam Pittman. That’s good news for the Razorbacks — there are several strong candidates on the market, even if Rhett Lashley appears ready to stay at SMU — but bad news for those hoping for a repeat of Petrino’s previous run in Fayetteville. Long before Petrino ever got on the bike, things were badly malfunctioning.

Texas trooper punched South Carolina players, fired

Editor’s note: This article has been updated with a statement from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

A Texas State Trooper stationed near the Kyle Field tunnel has been “relieved” of game-day duty following an incident with Nick Harbaugh and several South Carolina players during the Gamecocks’ Week 12 road game at No. 3 Texas A&M.

The “shoulder collision” incident occurred at Kyle Field near the end of the first half after an 80-yard touchdown pass from Lanoris Sellers to Nick Harbaugh, with South Carolina leading 27-3. After Harber entered the end zone, the Shamcocks wide receiver continued to run into the tunnel, where he grabbed the back of his leg, prompting several teammates to check on Harber. When they returned to the scene, the officer put Haber on his shoulder and yelled at him.

“We are aware of an incident involving a DPS member within the Northeast Tunnel. He has been relieved of duty on game day,” Texas A&M Police Department said on its official X (formerly Twitter) account.

The Texas Department of Public Safety added, “The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is aware of an incident that occurred today during a Texas A&M football game. The DPS trooper involved was sent home from the game. Our Office of Inspector General (OIG) is also aware of this incident and will investigate this matter further. No additional information will be released at this time.”

Here’s how the incident happened between the state troopers and Haber.

Let’s take another look at what happened inside the tunnel.

As of this writing, Harbaugh’s touchdown just before halftime was the last time the Gamecocks scored against the Aggies. The Aggies scored three touchdowns in the third quarter (a 27-yard pass from Marcell Reed to Isaiah Williams, a wide-open 39-yard pass to Ashton Bethel-Roman, and a 14-yard pass to Nate Berkircher), making it a one-score game by the fourth quarter.

Texas A&M then overcame a 30-3 halftime deficit with EJ Smith’s 4-yard rushing touchdown to win 31-30 and remain undefeated on the season.

Dick Van Dyke says he often feels “deteriorated” before his 100th birthday

0

play

Hollywood legend Dick Van Dyke is the first to admit that things aren’t so easy at this age, but he still takes care of himself.

In an essay for the Sunday Times published on November 13, 99-year-old Van Dyke opened up about the physical decline he experiences in his daily life, from problems with his legs to poor eyesight. He added that he has difficulty maintaining concentration in group conversations and frequently complains about his hearing aids.

“It’s frustrating to feel diminished in the world, both physically and socially,” he wrote. “I get invitations to events and gig offers in New York and Chicago, but I have to decline those trips because they take a lot out of me. Almost all my visits with people have to take place at my home.”

Still, the ‘Mary Poppins’ star is determined to live a long and healthy life as she approaches her 100th birthday on December 13, revealing that she tries to hit the gym three times a week.

“I don’t know why this is something I still want to do, but it is. I’m not yet a ‘get up and go back to bed’ type unless it’s cold and raining. If I miss the gym too much, the stiffness creeps in here and there and I really feel it. God help me if it takes hold,” he wrote.

During his workouts, he said he runs through a grueling circuit from car to car without taking a break. He starts on a sit-down machine and then hits his upper body before working on his legs, which are “two of my most important assets.”

What Dick Van Wyk Said About His 100th Birthday

Earlier this year, the Tony Award winner made a dark joke about never reaching 100 years old while speaking at the Vandy High Tea event in Malibu, Calif., on Oct. 5.

“I won’t officially turn 100 until December,” he said, according to People magazine. “Two months, two months. It would be weird if I didn’t make it in time.”

Mr. Van Dyke and his wife, Arlene, participated in the event, which raised money for the Van Dyke Foundation for the Arts and the Dick Van Dyke Museum.

This Sunday Times article is excerpted from the actor’s new memoir, titled “100 Rules for Living to 100: An Optimist’s Guide to a Happy Life.”

“Decades later, here I am. I turn 100 on December 13th. I’m as old, if not older, than Mr. Dawes, The Origami Guy, or Ludwig. I’m not going to play super old anymore. I’m super old,” he wrote, referring to the iconic character.

DHS announces immigration workers will be ‘flooded’ to Charlotte this weekend

0

play

Homeland Security officials were “rushing” to Charlotte, North Carolina, on Saturday, Nov. 15, to “ensure the safety of the American public and eliminate any public safety threats,” according to Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin.

“Americans should be able to live without fear of violent, criminal illegal aliens who harm them, their families, and their neighbors,” McLaughlin, the DHS assistant secretary for public affairs, said in a statement emailed to USA TODAY on Nov. 15.

“We are rushing DHS law enforcement to Charlotte to ensure the safety of Americans and eliminate any public safety threats,” McLaughlin said. “There are too many victims of criminal illegal aliens. President Trump and Secretary Noem will stand up to protect Americans even when sanctuary politicians won’t.”

The federal agents’ arrival comes as President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown expands to more Democratic-run cities, including Charlotte, led by Democratic Mayor Vi Lyles.

In response to the DHS effort, Charlotte’s city government issued a statement on November 15 saying, “The anticipated U.S. Customs and Border Protection operations are causing unnecessary fear and anxiety in our communities, as recent operations in other cities have resulted in the detention of people with no criminal records and violent protests as a result of these unjust actions.”

Additionally, the city government said in a statement: “If you need police, please do not hesitate to call 911. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department does not participate in the work of Immigration and Customs Enforcement or U.S. Customs and Border Protection, nor is it involved in the planning or execution of federal immigration enforcement operations.”

The city also asked local residents who want to make their voices heard to “act peacefully” as local authorities “don’t want to see the kind of violence that has been witnessed in so many other cities.”

What is DHS doing in Charlotte?

Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry L. McFadden said on Nov. 13 that prior to the announced deployment, federal officials had not released any specific details about DHS operations, such as the number of employees sent to the city or the nature of their duties. The sheriff added that his agency “does not participate in any enforcement actions by Immigration and Customs Enforcement and CBP.”

Charlotte, North Carolina’s largest city, is a Democratic stronghold in the state that Trump won in last year’s presidential election. Democratic candidate Kamala Harris won 66% of the vote in Mecklenburg County, giving Trump a 4-point lead in the state.

In a Nov. 13 X post, Lyles said local officials don’t know what immigration officials are planning to do in Charlotte, but asked residents to remain calm.

“I understand that this news brings uncertainty and fear to many in our community. Everyone in our community deserves to feel safe, and I am committed to keeping our community informed and doing everything we can to make sure everyone feels safe and knows their rights,” Lyles said on the X show.

According to the Charlotte Observer, “masked federal agents” made their presence known at churches and other locations in east Charlotte on Saturday, November 15th.

“Everyone is scared right now. Everyone,” said the church’s pastor, who did not want to give his name to reporters. “One of the immigration officers said he was going to arrest another officer in the church. He pushed him away.”

What other cities are federal employees located in?

McLaughlin did not provide further details about DHS operations, but the “surge” in Charlotte comes after federal agents were deployed to Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Memphis, Chicago and Portland. The deployment of federal officers and the National Guard has been challenged in court and has drawn criticism over the police’s use of force and what they see as increasingly aggressive tactics by the Trump administration.

Late last month, President Trump threatened to send “more than the National Guard” to “troubled” American cities. At the time, he did not say which cities he intended to send troops to.

“We’re sending in the National Guard, but if we need more than the National Guard, we’ll send in more than the National Guard, because we can have safe cities,” President Trump said on Oct. 28 at the U.S. Naval Base Yokosuka, Japan, during a week-long tour of Asia. “We’re not going to kill people in our city. Whether people like it or not, that’s what we’re doing.”

While Lyles and other city officials oppose the DHS action, Republican Rep. Tim Moore, who represents a suburban Charlotte district, said in a statement that he has “full confidence in our federal law enforcement partners and appreciate their continued efforts to uphold the rule of law and protect North Carolinians.”

Seattle Seahawks legend and Hall of Famer Kenny Easley dies at age 66

0

One of the greatest players in the 50-season history of the Seattle Seahawks has passed away.

Hall of Fame safety Kenny Easley passed away Friday night at the age of 66.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Seahawks legend Kenny Easley. Kenny exemplified what it means to be a Seahawk with his leadership, toughness, intensity and fearlessness,” the team said in a statement distributed Saturday afternoon. “His formidable personality and athletic ability made him one of the greatest players of all time.

“Kenny, a man of faith, will forever be remembered as a beloved member of the Seahawks family, and his legacy will live on as an inspiration to fans around the world. Our hearts go out to his wife, Gail, and his children, Kendrick, Gabriel, and Giordanna.”

Drafted fourth overall in the 1981 NFL Draft out of UCLA, Easley played just seven years in the league, but was outstanding throughout his short professional career.

A five-time Pro Bowler, three-time All-Pro and first-team selection, he was also named the league’s Defensive Player of the Year in 1984, when the Seahawks set a franchise record at the time with 12 regular-season wins.

Easley, known as the “Enforcer” for his tough, hard-hitting style of play, completed a league-high 10 passes that season and returned two for touchdowns. The 1984 Seahawks forced 63 turnovers, the most by any team since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970.

Easley was a key member of the Seahawks in 1983, ’84 and ’87, the first three teams in club history to reach the playoffs. The 1983 team advanced to the AFC Championship Game, but ultimately lost to the Los Angeles Raiders, who won Super Bowl XVIII.

Easley finished his career with 32 picks, 11 fumble recoveries, nine forced fumbles, and eight sacks in 89 games.

One of the best safeties in league history, he was also a member of the NFL’s All-Decade team in the 1980s and was enshrined in Canton in 2017, despite having a cut short career.

Seattle traded Easley to the Phoenix Cardinals before the 1988 season, but severe kidney disease forced him to retire. He later sued the Seahawks and their medical staff, alleging that an Advil overdose caused kidney failure. Easley and his team settled the case several years later, and he eventually received a kidney transplant. He also underwent triple bypass surgery in 2016.

After a bitter divorce, Easley and the franchise later reconciled, and in 2002 he was inducted into the Seahawks’ Ring of Honor, one of only 11 players to be recognized by the franchise. His number 45 was also retired by Seattle, one of only five jerseys taken out of circulation by Seattle.

“I’m glad we were able to reach a settlement,” Easley said via the Seahawks’ website in 2017. “To be honest, I never really thought about it because I was wallowing in my own anger. I thought I had been wronged. What happened to me didn’t have to happen. And it took me a while to recover from that. For 15 years, I was a football player. I didn’t watch a game. I never saw Cortez Kennedy play, because from 1987, when I joined Ring of Honor, to 2002, I didn’t watch NFL football, any kind of football, that whole time. Because I needed to step away from soccer completely. ”

“Kenny Easley was always going to be a dominant safety. When he was enthroned in 2017, he earned a well-deserved spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and embraced football immortality. Kenny had great ball skills, but don’t get me wrong. His biggest strengths were his fearlessness and intensity. When he got the ball as an opposing offensive player, he would hit hard and you would feel it for a while.”

“The Hall of Fame staff extends its condolences to Kenny’s wife Gail and the entire Easley family.”

The Seahawks and Hall have not disclosed the cause of death.

Classic car enthusiast adds rare 1982 Datsun 280ZX to garage

0

play

Earlier this year, we heard that Cynthia Clapham had bought the new car she’d been thinking about for more than 25 years.

I previously wrote about the Bloomington, Indiana woman and her 1972 Cadillac Fleetwood Eldorado. It is a convertible with a white and red interior that is one of the longest cars ever made.

This nearly all-original Cadillac is turning heads in Bloomington. Clapham loves driving old cars and keeps his late father’s ashes in a plastic container on the floorboards, so he can get into the car whenever he wants.

But this story isn’t about classic convertibles. Instead, the focus is on a 1982 Datsun 280ZX 2+2 Clapham that was tracked down in Nebraska, purchased secretly, and transported to her driveway.

It was one of several vehicles loaded onto a car carrier that arrived in the early morning hours of July 19 after a long journey. The transport driver finally delivered the Datsun after several days of delay.

“I can’t believe you own two classic cars,” Clapham told me when I tracked him down. She was driving a Z car when I first called and called me back later to find out more.

In 1998, she received a call from her son informing her that he had flipped his mother’s car on Lostman’s Lane near Ellettsville. He crawled out of the T-top unharmed, but his mother’s 1982 Datsun 280ZX was totaled.

“I really loved that car, its style and the way it drove,” Clapham recalled. “This was the closest I’ve ever come to owning my dream car, a Jaguar XKE.”

She forgave him, and 20 years later, after his death in 2022, Clapham thought more and more about her son and the Datsun four-seater sports car they both loved.

“I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been to Ohio, Northern Indiana, Kentucky, etc. over the last three years to see them, but there’s always something about cars that just blows my mind,” Clapham said.

There aren’t many 2+2 models with automatic transmissions like the one she was looking for. But she didn’t give up.

An online search in June revealed it could be the right car for Clapham. The car was for sale at a used car dealership in Gretna, Nebraska, 531 miles away and three states away.

“I did a lot of research to see what kind of reputation they had, and it was good,” Clapham said.

She talked to the salesman for several weeks, and he sent her multiple photos of the low-mileage car, close up and from underneath, from all angles. He guaranteed its mechanical stability.

“Buying a car without driving it was a big deal, but getting it here was something else,” she said, describing her relief when a transport driver sent her a photo of the car parked in the driveway with the message: “Keys under the floor mats.”

She hosed off the road grime from the long trip, backed the SUV out of the garage, and parked the Datsun right next to the Cadillac.

It’s a strange combination with a vintage car.

She sent me a photo with a caption.

Would you like to receive a $2,000 customs dividend check? Latest betting odds.

Gamblers on prediction betting sites such as Polymarket and Kalshi appear to be skeptical about the possibility of a $2,000 customs dividend check.

play

President Donald Trump has floated the idea of sending $2,000 tariff dividend checks to Americans. Will that happen? You can place bets.

Bettors on prediction betting sites such as Polymarket and Kalshi appear to be skeptical.

President Trump recently hinted at the possibility of checks from tariff revenue. On Nov. 9, he posted on Truth Social that “everyone will receive a dividend of at least $2,000 per person (except for high earners!).”

Three days later, on November 12, White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt was asked about dividends and echoed the president’s support for them. “The White House is fully committed to making that happen, and we are currently considering all legal options to make that happen.”

President Trump floated the idea of dividend rebates in July, saying that tariff revenue “could lead to some rebates, but the big thing we want to do is pay down the debt.”

President Trump said on Truth Social on November 10 that the $2,000 payments would go to “low- and moderate-income Americans.” But this isn’t the first time President Trump has hinted he’d give money to Americans, so taxpayers could be forgiven for being skeptical about the arrival of the checks. None of the checks resulted from the president’s February consideration of stimulus checks funded by expected savings from Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) cost-cutting efforts.

Here’s what bettors on our prediction platform think about the possibility of a $2,000 tariff dividend check.

What does Polymarket think about the possibility of a customs dividend check?

Activity on Polymarket as of Saturday, November 15th suggests that users are skeptical about the dividend checks being sent to Americans.

The site says there is a 7% chance that President Trump will generate a tariff dividend in 2025, amounting to more than $950,000. Betting began on October 3 and rose to 17% on November 9, but has since declined.

President Trump, who floated the idea of tariff dividends for Americans in August, also mentioned the possibility of dividend checks in an Oct. 2 interview with One America News Network (OAN). “We’re probably looking at $1,000 to $2,000. That would be great,” he said.

Polymarket also has another tariff dividend bet, suggesting a 26% chance that President Trump will set a tariff dividend by March 31, 2026. The results reached a high of 44% on November 13th, with betting initiated on November 9th. But the odds for yes have declined since then. With volume above $19,620, fewer people were betting on this outcome.

Another bet was launched on Nov. 13, but lacked enough activity to reach the posted amount, raising questions about whether Americans will receive their tariff stimulus checks by Dec. 31. As of Saturday, November 15th, the chance was only 6%.

Polymarket activity also suggests skepticism about how big a revenue increase from President Trump’s tariffs will be. Active bets on the site that tariffs could generate more than $250 billion in 2025 fell to 6% from a high of 35% in April, with volume of more than $931,500.

The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a nonpartisan nonprofit that studies fiscal policy, has so far estimated tariff revenue at about $100 billion, short of the $600 billion needed for the first tariff dividend check. The Tax Foundation, a nonprofit think tank, estimates that the net revenue from President Trump’s tariffs will be worth about $216 billion in fiscal year 2026, which begins Oct. 1.

What does Mr. Kalsi think about the possibility of a customs dividend investigation?

Skepticism is also growing on Calci, which as of Saturday, Nov. 15, pegged the odds of a user writing a check for $418,000 or more in 2025 to 5%, which is down from a high of 13.4% on Nov. 10, the day after betting began on Nov. 9.

The action against Carsi appears to indicate that users believe the Supreme Court will invalidate President Trump’s tariffs. The chance that the courts would rule in favor of President Trump’s tariffs was 24% as of Saturday, November 15th, for volumes of $1.17 million or more. This is down from a high of 58% just after the action began on September 2nd.

On November 5, the Supreme Court heard arguments on whether President Trump, rather than Congress, has the authority to impose significant tariffs on imported goods. The majority of the justices appeared skeptical of the Trump administration’s arguments.

“It’s difficult to convey.”

Scott Steinberg, a geopolitical futurist and keynote speaker at Futureproof Strategies, said the plan would need approval from Congress, but it’s uncertain whether there would be enough revenue to make the dividend checks viable. “It’s hard to see how the administration can actually make the math work without further increasing the parameters of the checks, and how these windfall revenues to civilians will leave enough revenue to pay down the national debt, as currently planned,” he told USA TODAY.

“Many citizens will be hoping to ease their financial burden, especially during the holiday and gift-giving season, and have money back in their pockets for once, rather than the other way around this year,” Steinberg said. “Still, it is difficult to know at this point whether there is a viable way to implement the concept, especially as originally sketched out, and whether there will be any real tangible benefits for comprehensive policy decisions.”

Attorney General Pam Bondi announced on November 15 that a person wanted for vandalizing the New Jersey office of Acting U.S. Attorney Alina Haba is in custody.

“No one will get away with blackmailing or threatening a great U.S. attorney or destroying his office,” Bondi wrote on social media.

The suspect is Keith Michael Risa, 51, with ties to New York City and New Jersey, and a $25,000 reward has been placed on him for information leading to his arrest and conviction, according to an FBI wanted poster.

According to the FBI, Lisa went to the Peter W. Rodino Federal Building in Newark, New Jersey, on Nov. 12 with a baseball bat. According to the FBI, he left because he was not allowed access, returned without the bat and went to the U.S. Attorney’s Office to destroy it.

He is charged with possession of a dangerous weapon on a federal facility and plundering federal property.

Tesla Model Y refresh brings big changes and divides opinion

play

Strong Points

  1. The best AI assistant in your car
  2. FSD works well (most of the time)
  3. impressive technology

Cons

  1. Ride comfort could be better
  2. FSD is not fully autonomous
  3. No more EV tax credit

What is Tesla without controversy and divisiveness?

of Tesla Model Y‘s midcycle refresh brought significant changes enough to earn it a spot in the 2026 SUV of the Year contest. of The complete list of updates is hugebut the highlights are important. Tesla didn’t just upgrade the details. We’ve made meaningful improvements across the board and addressed many of the shortcomings that have previously held compact SUVs back.

That’s not to say the updated Model Y, known to enthusiasts as the Juniper, is perfect. From the beginning, the judges were divided. In fact, Tesla recently MotorTrend’s 7 SUV Comparison Test in the Segment. At the time, ride comfort, value, and technology proved to be the main issues, and the same arguments resurfaced during SUV of the Year deliberations.

Ride discomfort was one of the biggest challenges to the Model Y before the refresh. Tesla addressed this issue by reworking the suspension to give it a smoother, more composed feel. Although the improvement was obvious, some judges felt the ride quality still lagged behind rival EVs. “While the SUV’s ride quality has improved, it’s still below par among EVs in this competition,” said Associate Editor Billy Rehbock. “The Tesla hides a lot of the stiffness with sound deadening, but you can still hear and feel the rear suspension thumping behind you.”

Technology was also a flashpoint. Years into its lifecycle, the Model Y continues to be the benchmark that many automakers use to develop small electric SUVs. Its standout features include Tesla’s route planner, a simplified infotainment menu, integration of Grok, Twitter’s conversational AI, and, most controversially, fully autonomous driving (with supervision). The justices were divided on Grok. While some praised Tesla for offering one of the most natural voice AIs in the industry, others pointed out that it cannot be fully integrated to handle the vehicle’s core functions, instead relying on Tesla’s own built-in voice assistant.

In terms of self-driving performance, some judges were impressed with the Model Y’s ability to navigate semi-autonomously through traffic, both in the city and on the highway. It’s impressive to sit behind the wheel and watch the car manage traffic lights and stop signs, make careful right turns, and confidently merge into fast-moving traffic. However, like any other driver assistance system, the driver must always be attentive when FSD (Supervised) is active. And while the technology has been dazzling at times, some judges criticized the inconsistency in handling certain scenarios and lacked confidence in the handover between computers and humans.

“It’s not that I don’t have complete faith in FSD; I just don’t have confidence that they can intervene in time,” said features editor Scott Evans. “Tesla continues to allow its cars to get into situations it cannot handle, and instead of immediately returning control to the driver, it allows its cars to operate beyond its capabilities, leaving unsuspecting drivers in dangerous situations.”

Despite all the controversy, the Model Y won a lot of praise. “It’s still the gold standard for EVs in the U.S.,” said Editor-in-Chief Ed Roe. “The $63,630 price is a benchmark for premium EV SUVs, but it’s definitely polarizing among our staff.” That is, some of us love its features, while others think its drawbacks are too great to overcome. And it was that polarization more than anything else that prevented Tesla’s refreshed Model Y from advancing to the finalist round.

This review is conducted as part of the 2026 SUV of the Year (SUVOTY) test, in which each vehicle is evaluated based on six key criteria: efficiency, design, safety, engineering excellence, value and performance of intended features. New hemp rules target THC. Mainstream CBD products are at a standstill

0

This provision closes a loophole that allowed the sale of hemp-derived products containing THC. Even products that don’t advertise their THC content can still face legal issues.

play

The government’s reopening bill also includes strict new rules for hemp products, which critics say could outlaw mainstream drinks, creams, gummies, oils and e-cigarettes.

This provision closes a loophole in the 2018 Farm Bill that allowed the sale of hemp-derived products containing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

THC is the substance primarily responsible for marijuana’s trademark psychological effects. Hemp is a plant related to marijuana, but produces much lower amounts of THC.

The 2018 law created an entire industry to include products sold for health reasons (often with terms like “hemp” or “CBD” in the description) and products sold as marijuana substitutes (sometimes sold in vape stores).

The new law will reduce the amount of THC contained in hemp products. Even products that do not advertise their THC content may face legal liability.

“Unfortunately, the ban will include many mainstream CBD drinks, gummies, and creams,” Dr. Jeffrey A. Singer, senior research scientist at the Cato Institute, said in an email to USA TODAY.

“Only ultra-pure isolates will meet the new criteria, and they represent a small share of the market,” Singer said.

Like the settlement bill as a whole, the marijuana provisions were not without criticism. Sen. Rand Paul, Republican of Kentucky, said the provision is like a “ban.”

Sen. Mitch McConnell, also a Kentucky Republican, supported the bill’s language, saying it was aimed at closing a loophole in a 2018 law he supported at the time that allowed products with intoxicating properties to inadvertently enter the market. He said he wants to protect children from intoxicating products like those marketed to look like Oreos and other children’s foods.

Jonathan Miller, general counsel for the U.S. Hemp Roundtable, said the new rules would ban more than 95% of all hemp-derived products, including many products that are not intoxicating.

What is hemp? How is it different from cannabis?

Hemp and marijuana are two plants from the same cannabis genus, but marijuana contains more tetrahydrocannabinol, known as THC.

There are a wide range of hemp products on the market that contain THC and cannabidiol (CBD), including tinctures and oils, tablets and capsules, balms, edibles, and beverages. These products are used for a variety of conditions including anxiety, joint pain, muscle pain, headaches, insomnia, and PTSD.

There are also ways to process hemp plants to achieve effects that mimic marijuana. This has given rise to a whole “marijuana lite” or “diet cannabis” industry, with terms like Delta 8 and Delta 10 popping up.

What products will be banned?

The bill would ban any product with more than 0.4 milligrams of THC, which Miller said would mean more than 95% of all hemp extract products would be banned, including many products that don’t have an intoxicating effect.

Singer said the ban would recriminalize a product that was legalized in the 2018 Farm Bill through the “hemp loophole.”

Products on the chopping block will include Delta-8 and Delta-10 gummies, THC-infused beverages, vaping products and THCA “hemp flower,” Singer said.

“Most CBD products cannot survive unless they contain substantial THC,” Singer told USA TODAY in an email.

Impending ban brings hemp industry to a standstill

The impending ban could have a significant impact on communities where hemp-based consumer products are a source of employment and form an entire industry grown by farmers, USA TODAY Network reports.

Jim Higdon, co-founder of Louisville-based Cornbread Hemp Co., told the Louisville Courier-Journal that he is preparing for the grand opening of the new 25,000-square-foot facility. The six-year-old company makes oils, topicals and gummies containing CBD, as well as gummies and seltzers infused with trace amounts of hemp-derived THC. The facility has approximately 100 employees, is expected to generate $50 million in sales in 2025, and will soon open to the public with retail and tours.

“Come see it while it’s legal,” Higdon joked, adding that he wouldn’t go quietly and was planning on heading to Washington.

Lee Van Tine II owns Apotheca Cannabis Dispensaries in Gastonia, North Carolina. He sells hemp products online and said he has operations in multiple states and has more than 300,000 customers.

“We’ll lose 98% of our sales. It’s over, it’s over, we’re bankrupt. 400 jobs at my company are gone,” he told the Gaston Gazette.

When will the ban come into effect?

The ban will go into effect on November 13, 2026, one year after the bill is signed.

What’s next?

The U.S. Hemp Roundtable, a coalition of companies and organizations “committed to safe hemp and CBD products,” says it is working with lawmakers, including Republican Rep. Morgan Griffith of Virginia and Sen. Ron Wyden and Sen. Jeff Merkley, both Democrats of Oregon, to develop regulations that address concerns about high or irregular THC content, synthetic ingredients, counterfeit products, and marketing and packaging that appeals to minors.

‘SNL’ host Glen Powell lives for the show’s ‘last-minute nature’

0

play

Glen Powell has listened to “Saturday Night Live” before. Now he is having dinner with his whole family.

Powell will host “SNL” for the first time on Nov. 15, the same weekend that his latest film, “Running Man,” is released. For Powell, a longtime fan of the show, it was like a late-night wish he’d had since childhood.

“I’ve wanted to do this like my whole life,” Powell told USA TODAY. “There is no stage I could have dreamed of more than Thirty Rock.

“This is truly a symbolic rite of passage and I really can’t wait.”

He admits there are some nerves. “It’s ‘SNL.’ It’s the craziest live format you can imagine.” But with that said, “pressure is a privilege. For me, it’s just the top of the mountain.”

At least Powell has some experience on the “SNL” stage. In a March 2024 episode hosted by her Anyone But You co-star Sidney Sweeney, Powell appeared in a monologue and performed a gag about the pair’s rumored relationship. He also made a brief cameo appearance in one of Sweeney’s sketches.

What were his first impressions of the show? “You can see the last-minute nature of it,” Powell said. “For example, I was thinking of doing a little bit in her monologue. What I didn’t expect was that maybe 10 minutes before they filmed[that]sketch, they wanted me to do it. So they said, ‘Hey, do you want to be in this last sketch?'” I was like, “Wait, what am I doing?” There was zero preparation. I went out there and read the cue cards. I just had to muster up the courage to get through it, but it was fun.

“In an age where everything is edited and cherry-picked, ‘SNL’ is one of the last great performances, and they’re building this[show]every week, and you see all the costumes and makeup and people creating these characters out of nothing. And the rehearsals for it all happen in a week.”

“SNL” is one of the many “amazing pinch-me moments” he’s enjoyed lately. His star has risen rapidly over the past few years with films like “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Hitman,” and “Twisters.” He had another productive year in 2025, starring in and producing Hulu’s football comedy “Chad Powers” and traveling the world on “Running Man.”

Powell sees many actors separating their work and personal lives, but his focus this year is figuring out how to bring friends and family along.

“You’ll never see me happier than when I’m on set,[but]when I have time on the weekends, I’ll disappear and come back,” Powell says. “So I am able to fill my life with great experiences, not just work-related, and give my all to everything I do.

“I’m really happy. It’s really fulfilling. I get to take my guys to NASCAR, F1, the World Series. I’m like, what could be better than this?”

Has anyone won the Mega Millions jackpot? See results for November 14th

On Friday night, Nov. 14, winning numbers were drawn in the eighth-largest Mega Millions drawing in history, resulting in a $980 million jackpot. And almost five months later, the game had a big winner.

A Georgia winner matched all six numbers in the Nov. 14 drawing, matching the white balls 1, 8, 11, 12, and 57 with the gold Mega Ball 7, winning an estimated jackpot of $980 million, or a one-time cash payout of $452.2 million. The win was the eighth largest jackpot in Mega Millions history and the largest prize ever won in November.

“$980 million is the largest jackpot ever won since the Mega Millions game was modified in April,” Mega Millions Consortium Principal Director Joshua Johnston said in a news release. “Congratulations to Georgia’s big winners and all the players who are winning more than ever in this new version of the game.”

Mega Millions ticket prices increased to $5 per play in April. Higher prices include built-in multipliers that increase non-jackpot winnings by 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, or 10x. Previously, in some states, players paid an extra dollar for a multiplier known as a megaplier. A higher starting jackpot is also part of the April changes. The starting jackpot for the next drawing on Tuesday, November 18th is $50 million ($23.1 million cash).

The jackpot is the largest prize since a $1.269 billion prize awarded in California in December 2024.

There were four Mega Millions winners this year. The most recent winner was from Virginia, who won a $348 million jackpot on June 27th. Before that, on April 18th, an Ohio player won a $112 million jackpot. On March 25th, a lucky ticket holder from Illinois took home $344 million, and earlier this year, on January 17th, another winner from Arizona took home $113 million.

President Trump says he has made a ‘sort of’ decision to attack Venezuela

0

play

President Donald Trump has said he has “sort of made up his mind” about whether to take military action in Venezuela, which would further escalate an already tense situation after the United States spent two months attacking suspected drug smuggling ships in the Caribbean.

President Trump told reporters on Air Force One on November 14, “I can’t tell you what it’s going to be, but I’ve kind of made up my mind.” “We’ll see what happens. I mean, I can’t say what it is, but we’ve made great progress with respect to Venezuela in terms of stopping the flow of drugs.”

The United States has deployed F-35 aircraft, warships and nuclear-powered submarines to the region as part of a military buildup following two months of deadly attacks on boats off the coast of Venezuela. Earlier this week, the Gerald Ford Carrier Strike Group led more than 75 military aircraft and more than 5,000 troops into the Latin American region.

The United States refuses to recognize the legitimacy of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who has been in office since Hugo Chávez’s death in 2013, as head of state. The State Department is offering $50 million for information leading to his arrest or conviction, but this amount has been increased repeatedly since 2020.

Maduro has said Trump is trying to remove him from power, but Trump has repeatedly said he has no intention of pursuing regime change. The Latin American country plans to mount a guerrilla-style resistance or cause chaos in the event of an air or ground attack from the United States.

President Trump said in comments on Nov. 14 that “the flow of drugs into our country is way overdue.” He also said the problem is not limited to Venezuela.

“But there are problems with Mexico, and there are problems with Colombia,” he said. “We’re getting along very well.”

La Niña, polar vortex dancing in winter weather forecast for 2025-2026

0

Sudden and dramatic changes in high temperatures in the atmosphere dance with La Niña weather patterns. There will be no clear winner, and forecasters are still determining how cold it will be.

Something unusual may be happening in the stratosphere, and meteorologists say it could change the course of winter forecasts.

Judah Cohen, a research scientist and climatologist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), said in an email to USA TODAY that the atmosphere is at a “critical crossroads” and what happens in November could be a “crossroads” for the rest of the winter.

Weather models suggest that the stratosphere could suddenly warm up, causing a counterintuitive cooling effect on the Earth’s surface.

If the phenomenon of “sudden stratospheric warming” actually occurs, cold weather and snow could soon arrive in many parts of the country.

Cohen said the developments will determine how the often-misunderstood polar vortex affects U.S. weather and how cold air from the north is guided by La Niña weather patterns.

What’s the winter forecast? Check out AccuWeather’s winter outlook.

It won’t be long until the cold and snow returns. AccuWeather’s long-term experts share what this winter will look like in the U.S.

An “extraordinary and unique event” may be underway

Mr. Cohen described a series of events that could soon occur. The stratosphere above the North Pole suddenly warms, pushing cold air south toward the United States.

This is called “sudden stratospheric warming” (SSW) and is “the biggest type of disruption that can occur in the polar vortex,” Cohen said.

“It is named after the dramatic warming that occurs in the polar stratosphere (warming near the North Pole can exceed 100 degrees in just a few days),” he said. “Warming causes the polar vortex to move much further south than normal.”

If the stratosphere suddenly warms, November would be the first such event since accurate satellite recording began, he added.

There were two known events in the pre-satellite era: November 1958 and November 1968.

“I tend not to rely on stratospheric data before satellite data was available,” Cohen says. Therefore, if a stratospheric warming event were to occur, “it would be an unusual, even unique phenomenon.”

Girl vs Polar Vortex?

If Cohen’s scenario comes true, the polar vortex would have a major impact on future weather, but as meteorologists have previously said, La Niña also has a big impact.

The relationship between the two is complex. There are no clear winners and losers as to which weather patterns will dominate the winter.

Rather, the polar vortex weather pattern largely influences the degree of coldness, Cohen said, and La Niña effects help direct that coldness.

Overall, Cohen believes that “the behavior of the polar vortex will be more influential in determining whether the U.S. experiences cold weather.”

Does cold air reach the ground?

Cohen said a key question about our weather is how strongly stratospheric warming will affect weather at the surface and in the troposphere. If the warming phenomenon were to have a strong impact on the jet stream and our weather, we would see an extended period of cold and snowy weather starting sometime in December, he said. It could also be extended into early January, “significantly increasing the likelihood of an even colder winter in the United States.”

“I believe that a weaker or short-circuited coupling between the polar vortex and the jet stream could lead to an overall warmer climate across the United States for the foreseeable future, greatly increasing the likelihood that the U.S. winter will be generally mild to very mild.”

More than half of low- and middle-income Americans now own stocks.

The stock market is no longer just for the wealthy.

More than half of low- and moderate-income Americans currently invest in capital markets, according to a new study by the BlackRock Foundation and financial nonprofit Commonwealth.

And the majority of less affluent investors, with household incomes between $30,000 and $80,000, started investing within the past five years.

In previous generations, owning stocks often meant having a broker and a lot of money. Today, the top 1% of Americans still own half of all stocks, according to federal data.

However, technological leaps and industry changes have dramatically lowered the hurdles to market entry. Now anyone can buy it.

“The barriers to entry are low,” Commonwealth CEO Timothy Flack said. “You can start with $50, or in many cases $1 and a smartphone. That’s what matters.”

Got $5 and a smartphone? Let’s buy some stocks.

Stock information was distributed in high-end financial magazines, subscription newsletters, and even on country club golf courses.

Today, anyone with access to the Internet can summon up tons of investment advice with a simple Google search. YouTube and TikTok are full of investment influencers.

And buying stocks has never been easier. Online platforms allow consumers to purchase stocks without the help or commissions of a broker. For the price of a cup of coffee, you can own a piece of the market.

“No brokerage firms charge commissions these days, and many allow fractional share trading,” said Robert Brokamp, senior retirement advisor and financial planning expert at The Motley Fool. “In some cases, you can get a piece of Nvidia or Microsoft stock for just a $5 investment.”

The report, released Oct. 13 by the BlackRock Foundation and the Commonwealth, is based on a nationally representative survey of more than 2,750 Americans from low- or moderate-income households.

Investors opened 46 million accounts in 2020-21

The study is part of a larger effort to study the flow of new investors into the stock market during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020 and 2021 alone, retail investors opened 46 million new brokerage accounts.

The pandemic has inspired many Americans to try their hand at investing. Thanks in part to the federal government’s stimulus package, they’ve been stuck at home, cutting back on spending and building up savings.

“Some people realized they had more cash or they had more time,” Flack said.

For the American middle class, stocks and real estate served as a gateway to the American Dream, allowing a modest investment to earn a lifetime of capital gains.

But in recent years, soaring home prices and rising interest rates have put homeownership out of reach for many people. With no minimum investment, the stock market remains a viable option for building wealth.

“Many young people and low-income people are not able to enter the housing market,” said Caleb Silver, editor-in-chief of financial journalism site Investopedia. “But they were able to build their net worth by investing in the stock market and owning individual stocks.”

The stock market sells itself

As a wealth-building tool, the stock market has done a great job of promoting itself.

According to The Motley Fool, the S&P 500 index is up 261% over the past 10 years, an annualized increase of 13.6%.

“With a few exceptions, the market has been experiencing an extraordinary sell-off over the past 10 to 15 years,” Brokamp said. “It will get more attention and more people will invest.”

Over time, low-income Americans may be able to increase their stock ownership and gradually close historic wealth disparities.

According to a Motley Fool analysis, in the first quarter of 2025, the bottom 50% of Americans by net worth owned just 1% of all stocks.

As more low- and middle-income consumers own stocks, their portfolios will likely eventually grow.

“Americans are very good at being consumers,” Silver says. “But they are also becoming better owners of the companies in which they are spending money.”

According to a BlackRock report, low-income investors have roughly the same aspirations as higher-income Americans. Survey respondents cited the following as their top investment goals:

  • Retirement allowance (37%)
  • Money for the future (35%)
  • Reduced financial stress (27%)
  • Money for children and family (27%)

This study does not include 401(k) accounts, IRAs, or other tax-advantaged investments. It focuses on consumers investing through standard brokerage accounts.

New investors choose individual stocks over index funds

The study found that new investors are more likely to own individual stocks than mutual funds or ETFs.

That could be a problem. All stocks are volatile, and individual stocks are generally more volatile than mutual funds or ETFs, which often mirror the performance of stock or bond indexes.

“My personal preference is to start with index funds and then move to individual stocks,” Brokamp said. “But now the opposite seems to be happening.”

Claire Chamberlain, chair of the BlackRock Foundation, said the research suggests new investors are “really hungry for information on how to diversify” their investments. “One of the things the industry can do is meet people where they are.”

Chamberlain said the financial services industry could help new investors, for example by encouraging more households to open emergency savings accounts.

A recent analysis by Investopedia found that the average American household needs at least $35,000 in emergency savings to cover unexpected expenses.

Emergency savings provide financial security. Low-income households with no savings are more likely to liquidate their investment accounts if their car breaks down or their roof leaks.

“One of the highlights of this study is the importance of having emergency savings to support investors’ ability to continue with their plans,” Chamberlain said.

Michelle Obama says Americans aren’t ready for a female president

play

Michelle Obama said Americans don’t want a woman to be president, so they shouldn’t count on her to run for the nation’s highest office.

“As we’ve seen in past elections, unfortunately we are not prepared,” President Obama said. “So don’t even see that I’m running, because you’re all lying. You’re not ready to be a woman. You’re not ready yet.”

The former first lady and wife of President Barack Obama made the comments during a conversation with Tracee Ellis Ross on Nov. 14 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music to promote her new book, “The Look.”

“So don’t waste my time,” she continued. “We’ve had a lot of work to do to grow. And, sadly, there are still a lot of men who don’t feel like they should be led by women. And we’ve seen that. I think we still have a lot of growing to do in that regard.”

Although Obama was more popular than her husband during his presidency, he has often said he would not run for president. A 2024 poll taken as Democrats considered leaving President Joe Biden out of office suggested that only Mr. Obama could beat President Donald Trump.

But still, two of the past three Democratic presidential candidates, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Vice President Kamala Harris, were women. Both were lost to Trump.

How are schools and companies responding to the growing financial disparity among Gen Z?

0

play

  • Recent research shows that many Gen Zers lack basic financial literacy, with some not even knowing about inflation or how many cents are in a dollar.
  • In response to this knowledge gap, 30 states now require high school students to take a personal finance course.
  • Companies like Capital One and Intuit offer programs that give teens real-world financial experience and job skills.

According to a study by writing platform EduBirdie, Gen Z may know how to use TikTok with ease, but they’re totally lacking when it comes to finances.

The study found that of the 2,000 Americans surveyed between the ages of 18 and 27, 46% do not understand cryptocurrencies and 33% are unsure about inflation and interest rates. According to the survey, 8% don’t know how many cents there are on the dollar, 2% believe it’s 10 cents, 3% believe it’s 50 cents, and 3% believe the number is related to inflation.

With costs rising and the risk of losing out on programs like Social Security, Gen Z needs to become financially literate, and the sooner the better, experts say. Thirty states already require high school students to take at least one semester of independent personal finance courses before graduation, up from 17 in 2022, according to the nonprofit Next Gen Personal Finance. Companies are now building on real money experience based on classroom education.

Mindy Bingham, author of Lifestyle Math, said, “Every teen has the right to know not just how money works, but how money works for them.” “That’s what changes behavior. It’s not just vocabulary and worksheets, it’s actual numbers that are connected to your life.”

Opportunities for capital (1)

Calique Barnes was a high school senior when she applied for a paid internship as a Capital One Café Ambassador. Internships for high school students from underserved communities teach teens how to find jobs, work, and budget.

Selected students will work at some Capital One banks and some cafes during their senior year, where they will learn financial literacy and work with other employees to help customers with banking questions, said Jennifer Windbeck, director of retail banking channels and operations at Capital One. Also, network and present your knowledge at cafes and school events.

“Glory to God, they chose me,” Burns said. “It’s been a great work experience. Money management didn’t exist in my family or community. We didn’t know about credit or debt. I learned all about it. I also get to teach my children, family, and friends how to manage money and think long-term.”

Burns, now a freshman at Morehouse College, even gives advice to her mother, whether she asks or not. “When my mom made a financial decision that I didn’t agree with, I told her why. She was surprised. She said, ‘Oh, you’re a financial advisor now,'” he said.

But Burns said he practices what he preaches. He tweaked the 50/30/20 rule, which says people should put 50% of their money toward paying for necessities, 30% toward needs like entertainment and entertainment, and 20% toward savings and debt repayments. “I went 50/20/30 so I could save a little more for college,” he said.

Get “In-tu-it”

Similarly, financial software company Intuit launched Intuit for Education to reach 50 million students with financial literacy by 2030. High school and college students have access to free online curriculum and tools to learn about finance, and high school students in career and technical education from underserved communities can apply to the Intuit food truck program.

The Food Truck Program provides students with food trucks and mobile carts, financial and business management tools, culinary training, and start-up grants to help students operate their own food trucks. Since its launch in 2023, nearly 10,000 students have taken the program in nine metropolitan areas, including Los Angeles, Dallas, Denver, Lynchburg, Nashville, Reno and San Diego. Dave Zasada, vice president of Intuit for Education, said 10,000 more students will participate this year, with plans to expand to areas near Atlanta, Fort Lauderdale and Milwaukee.

“Students not only get to cook, but they get hands-on experience running a business,” Zasada said. “They use QuickBooks to manage sales and track costs, create budgets, price products, manage inventory, and even develop branding and promotional strategies. They also build important soft skills like leadership, communication, teamwork, and problem-solving, all in real time while running a functioning food truck.”

Students also learn to contribute to the community. This holiday season, students will see first-hand how they can use their business skills to make a positive impact as each kitchen truck helps provide free meals to those in need. It plans to serve about 400 people at each stop and help more than 3,500 people nationwide, he said.

“As students create budgets, manage inventory, and make business decisions that directly impact their success, they see firsthand how financial literacy can enhance their chances,” Zasada said. “It’s not just about learning how to balance a budget, it’s about building the confidence to turn your ideas into reality.”
