Is child care in New York free? Experts say Mamdani’s plan may work

0

play

Rebecca Baylin pays $32,000 a year for full-day child care for her five-month-old in New York City.

This is higher than the national average, but not unusual. Many parents in the city and other parts of the country can relate, as Care.com’s 2025 Cost of Care Report found that many parents spend 22% of their household income on child care. Bailin said he couldn’t find a cheaper store within walking distance of his home.

“People are spending huge amounts of money and can’t make it work, but they don’t have a choice,” Beilin said. She is also the executive director of New Yorkers United for Child Care, a nonprofit organization that started organizing parents, grandparents, and other advocates for free child care in 2023. Family members told Beilin, “It’s embarrassing to talk about how much I pay for childcare because I feel like it’s my fault and that I didn’t know enough.”

Five years from now, Beilin believes New York’s child care system will look very different. She also helped create a roadmap for universal free child care not only in New York City, but throughout the state. And now that Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani has taken office, Bailin said she hopes their shared dream of free childcare will become a reality.

Mamdani won the hearts of New Yorkers with promises of a more affordable city, from free buses to lower grocery prices, from rent freezes to free child care. Because child care remains the biggest expense for most American families, other than rent, the idea of universal child care sparked interest among Big Apple residents and out-of-state people alike. According to an analysis by Child Care Aware of America, the cost of child care for two children exceeds rent in nearly every state.

But not everyone is confident in Mandani’s plan, which would require major changes to New York City’s current child care system, costing an estimated $6 billion and adding hundreds of childcare workers to meet the city’s needs. Experts say these workers are already thin and underpaid. Of course, even among those who agree that universal child care is the ultimate goal, there are disagreements about how to achieve it.

Still, some supporters say Mamdani’s election brings New York City closer than ever to free child care. It won’t be easy, and it won’t happen overnight. But “this is definitely a policy that could happen,” said Alison Silkowski, senior policy adviser at New America’s New Practice Lab, a liberal think tank based in Washington, D.C.

“For the first time, the stars of politics seem to be pretty much on the same page,” Silkowski said.

Experts say New York could have free child care within five years. But who will pay for it?

Child care policy experts say that if all goes well, New York state could establish free child care infrastructure across the state within about five years.

Silkowski estimates it will cost New York City $6 billion and the state more than $14 billion. Experts agree that the city and state need to work together to establish universal child care for all New Yorkers. Marina Marcoux-O’Malley of the Alliance for Quality Education said it would likely include adjustments to the state’s tax system and higher taxes on corporations and the ultra-wealthy. Cities and states could also require employers to pay for child care, Silkowski said.

Achieving universal free child care will depend on Mandani’s ability to continue working well with New York Governor Cathy Hochul. And recently, Hochul put the brakes on another of Mamdani’s campaign promises, which is to make buses free of charge.

Still, Mr. Hochul has publicly said he supports universal free child care and has invested significant amounts of state money in recent years to expand child care subsidies, said Mr. Silkowski, who was Mr. Hochul’s assistant policy director.

Hochul’s team did not respond to USA TODAY’s questions about whether he would be open to adjusting state taxes to raise revenue for universal child care.

Marco-O’Malley believes Hochul could be New York’s biggest obstacle to universal free child care.

“The governor has said publicly many times that he will not consider increasing revenue,” Marco O’Malley said. “And it’s a little contradictory to say you support an agenda…and then say you don’t want to increase revenue.”

Silkowski said there is a lot that Mamdani can do on its own next year in terms of identifying funding to add child care seats to the city budget and waive co-pays for child care vouchers. But ultimately the city will need to partner with the state.

“We’re really concerned about, ‘How are we going to pay for this?'” Beilin said. But she argues that the city can no longer afford to not pay childcare fees. “We’re losing our tax base because people are fleeing New York. We’re losing workers because people can’t work or have to cut their hours. They can’t put down roots, they can’t buy homes, they can’t pay off their debts.”

New York will need to expand universal child care. Advocates disagree on who should get access first.

In 2024, about 174,000 children out of 104,000 households in New York state will receive child care assistance, according to the state. A combination of federal, state, and local funds contribute to child care assistance programs.

Subsidy programs will need to be expanded in the coming years to ensure universal access to free childcare. That means some families who don’t currently have free child care will be able to do so by this time next year, Silkowski said.

But child care advocates are divided over who should gain access first.

Bailin proposed an age-based expansion process to add more families to the program, starting with preschool and continuing through toddlers. She proposes strengthening the city’s universal preschool program by first improving access to more families and more neighborhoods.

“We’re fixing it and stabilizing it, so next year we can pretty simply drop the age to include two-year-olds,” Beilin said.

Other proponents argue that it is better to scale as needed. To be sure, the current income-based system is flawed, Marco-O’Malley said. However, this addresses the needs of families with multiple children of different ages.

But the economic entitlement system is biased and difficult to navigate, Bailin said.

“You don’t have to go through complicated income tests to prove your worth, right?” Bailin said. “We all need this.”

Whatever expansion occurs, experts agree that as the system expands, it will also need to raise wages for childcare workers to make up for childcare labor shortages.

Will other cities and states follow suit with free child care?

It’s safe to say that other cities and states will be looking to New York in the coming years to see if and how universal free child care becomes a reality.

“People are excited about the idea,” said Shoshana Hershkowitz, campaign manager for the Empire State Campaign for Child Care. Universal child care is “very popular and has appeal across all kinds of political lines and demographics.”

It’s not just about affordability, she said. It is related to the healthy development of children. “The first three years are critical when it comes to brain development,” Hershkowitz said.

“New York City is often the starting point for trends across the country, whether it’s fashion or the arts,” said Julie Cashen, senior fellow and director of women’s economic justice at the Century Foundation. “And I think this could be just the kind of city that New York City starts to show potential for.”

House of Representatives to vote on release of Jeffrey Epstein files on Tuesday

0

play

The Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on Tuesday, November 18, on a bill that would force the Justice Department to release all records related to disgraced financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The vote came after President Donald Trump called on House Republicans to vote in favor of releasing the full Epstein file, a stunning reversal after previously warning Republicans not to fall into Epstein’s “trap.”

“It’s time to move on from the Democratic hoax perpetrated by the lunatics on the radical left to distract from the great successes of the Republican Party, including the recent Democratic ‘shutdown’ victory,” President Trump wrote on Truth Social on November 16.

Mr. Trump, along with other members of the United States and international power elites, partied with Mr. Epstein in New York and Florida in the 1990s and 2000s. President Trump has said his friendship with Epstein ended in the 2000s, that he had nothing to do with Epstein’s crimes, and that his political opponents are trying to smear him by suggesting otherwise.

Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming vote.

When will the House vote on the Epstein file?

House Speaker Mike Johnson said he believed the vote to release the files should help quell any suspicions that President Trump had any connection to Epstein’s abuse. He later told reporters that the vote would take place on the afternoon of November 18.

“He had nothing to hide,” Johnson told reporters on Nov. 17 about Trump. “He and I had the same concern: We want to make sure the victims of these heinous crimes are fully protected from exposure.”

Supporters of releasing the files say they share those concerns, and a resolution that House members are expected to vote on would allow the Justice Department to withhold or redact identifying information about victims.

What does this bill do?

The Epstein File Transparency Act requires the Department of Justice to release “all unclassified records, documents, communications, and investigative materials in the Department’s possession relating to the investigation and prosecution of Jeffrey Epstein.”

Representatives Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) and Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) are the lead authors of the bill, which they say would target documents related to Epstein’s co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell, potential flight and travel records, and individuals named or mentioned in connection with Epstein.

What does House do?

The Epstein bill already had enough support to pass the House. It is now expected to pass the House after President Trump urged Republicans to vote in favor of the bill.

All House Democrats and four House Republicans signed an expulsion petition to force a vote to release the files. Massey expects more than 100 Republicans and all Democrats to vote in favor of the bill.

If the House passes the resolution, it will be transferred to the Senate, where it will need to be voted on before it can be sent to Trump for his signature. Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune declined to comment on the bill’s plans.

How Levi Strauss is leveraging AI for its DTC-first business model

0

Levi Strauss is incorporating AI and cloud platforms into its core business as it pursues a direct-to-consumer (DTC)-first business model.

The nearly 175-year-old apparel company is leveraging Microsoft technology to modernize the consumer experience and increase internal productivity. Levi Strauss’ approach provides case studies of other companies using integrated technology stacks to address specific commercial objectives.

AI “super agents”: Levi Strauss’ integrated front end for business

A central element of this effort is the development of agent-based AI solutions. Levi Strauss deploys an Azure-native “orchestrator agent” embedded within Microsoft Teams that acts as a “super agent.”

This agent serves as a single conversation portal for employees across corporate, retail, and warehouse environments. On the operational side, we respond to employee questions and route them to specialized sub-agents behind the scenes. Some of them are already in place. This shows the integration of employee tools. Instead of training staff on multiple applications, agents provide a single interface to streamline workflow.

This AI-centric business model is part of a broader goal outlined by Levi Strauss & Co’s chief digital and technology officer, Jason Gowans.

“We are reinventing Levi Strauss & Co as a DTC-first, fan-centric retailer, making every interaction faster, smarter and more personal,” Gowans said. “AI is at the center of this, helping us drive innovation, increase employee creativity, unlock productivity, and deliver connected, memorable experiences that keep fans coming back for more.”

This focus on productivity extends to the developer side as well. The team uses GitHub Copilot for major projects including quality engineering and release management. At the same time, other employees are equipped with Microsoft Surface Copilot+ PCs. Employee feedback indicates that these devices lead to increased speed and data processing, and features such as Copilot keys reduce the time it takes to search for information.

Basic cloud and security posture

Levi Strauss’ AI implementation is based on prerequisite infrastructure work. For business leaders, this highlights that advanced AI models require an integrated cloud environment.

As part of a broader digital initiative, Levi Strauss uses Microsoft Azure to migrate application workloads from on-premises data centers. The company used Azure Migrate and GitHub Copilot to plan and execute the consolidation of its private data center environment.

This cloud infrastructure is also the center of a company’s security system. Levi Strauss leverages Azure AI Foundry and semantic kernels to build intelligent automation capabilities.

Security is integrated into the AI framework itself, and tools are used to power security agents and policy orchestration. This approach allows Levi Strauss to continue expanding its AI-driven efforts across its global operations while maintaining its zero trust security model.

To manage new hardware endpoints, the company also uses Microsoft Intune for zero-touch device onboarding and application deployment.

Transform your business model by fully leveraging the AI ecosystem

Levi Strauss’ work demonstrates an ecosystem-based approach to AI adoption. Rather than deploying separate tools in stages, the company is integrating AI agents, developer tools, and new hardware on a common cloud platform.

Keith Mercier, vice president of worldwide retail and consumer goods industry at Microsoft, said Levi Strauss “exemplifies how iconic brands can reinvent themselves with cloud and AI technology.”

For other companies, the Levi Strauss case study serves as a blueprint for directly linking AI and foundational cloud migration to high-value outcomes, such as converting to a DTC business model.

USA TODAY Sports will provide timely updates on the league’s evolving playoff picture each week during the 2025 NFL regular season. It typically begins after a late Sunday afternoon game and continues through the remainder of the week (Monday and Thursday games, or Saturday game, if applicable). And when the holidays start, I plan to watch it then too.

What the hell happened? What does that mean? As the seven-team brackets for each conference begin to take shape, what will be the relevant factors (and perhaps the tiebreakers)? Everything will be explained and analyzed leading up to the postseason berths being decided on Sunday, January 4th.

Here’s where things stand as Week 11 of the 2025 season is nearly complete.

NFC Playoffs Photos

1. Philadelphia Eagles (8-2), NFC East leader: Something catastrophic (not uncommon in Philadelphia) has to happen to the defending champions. do not have This is the first consecutive victory since winning this category 21 years ago. After Sunday night’s win over Detroit, Philadelphia is now awarded the No. 1 seed after escaping the Rams in Week 3. remaining schedule: Cowboys, vs. Bears, vs. Chargers, vs. Raiders, vs. Commanders, vs. Bills, vs. Commanders.

2. Los Angeles Rams (8-2), first in the NFC West: They defeated Seattle, won five straight games, and took first place in the division. However, the Rams remain effectively one game behind Philadelphia in the conference standings. remaining schedule: vs. Buccaneers, at. Panthers, at. Cardinals, vs. Lions, at. Seahawks, at. Falcons, vs. Cardinals

3. Chicago Bears (7-3), NFC North leader: After an 0-2 start, they won seven of eight games and took first place in the district. And now it looks like they’ll be painting a weakened Pittsburgh team in Week 12. remaining schedule: vs.Steelers, at.Eagles, at.Packers, vs.Browns, vs.Packers, at.49ers, vs.Lions

4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-4), NFC South leader: The lead in the division has shrunk to 0.5 games over Carolina, but the Bucs’ schedule will soon become much more manageable. remaining schedule: Rams, Cardinals, Saints, Falcons, Panthers, Dolphins, Panthers

5. Seattle Seahawks (7-3); wildcard number 1: They lost to the Rams and fell from first place in the NFC West. All three of the Hawks’ losses have come against NFC opponents. remaining schedule: Titans, Vikings, Falcons, Colts, Rams, Panthers, 49ers.

6. Green Bay Packers (6-3-1), Wild Card No. 2: They were badly beaten in Sunday’s win over the Giants, but ultimately moved up one notch in the NFC seeding. remaining schedule: vs. Vikings, at Lions, vs. Bears, at Broncos, at Bears, vs. Ravens, at Vikings

7. San Francisco 49ers (7-4), third wild card: Detroit’s latest setback leaves only the third team in the NFC West to advance into the projected seven-team NFC playoff field. And perhaps the Niners can start building momentum with QB1 Brock Purdy back in the lineup. remaining schedule: vs. Panthers, at Browns, bye, vs. Titans, at Colts, vs. Bears, vs. Seahawks

8. Detroit Lions (6-4), on the hunt: With Detroit eliminated from the playoff picture, the offense was back on track Sunday night in Philadelphia…for now. If they had won in Philadelphia, the Lions would have been the No. 2 seed. This shows how crowded conferences are today. remaining schedule: vs. Giants, vs. Packers, vs. Cowboys, at Rams, vs. Steelers, at Vikings, at. Bears

9. Carolina Panthers (6-5), on the hunt: In addition to closing in on the Bucks, they are one game back from the Niners (who they will play next) for the NFC’s last wild-card spot. remaining schedule: 49ers vs. Rams, BYE, vs. Saints, vs. Buccaneers, vs. Seahawks, vs. Buccaneers

10. Dallas Cowboys (4-5-1), acquired: Monday’s blowout loss to the Raiders gave this team a much-needed boost both mentally and in the standings, and Dallas is back in the playoff periphery. remaining schedule: vs. Eagles, vs. Chiefs, at Lions, vs. Vikings, vs. Chargers, at Commanders, at Giants

AFC playoff photos

1. Denver Broncos (9-2), AFC West Leader: Sunday’s victory over Kansas City put a chokehold on the Chiefs’ AFC West title, which they have held since 2016. The Broncos also moved past the Patriots into first place in the conference. Denver’s AFC record (6-2) is currently 0.5 games ahead of New England. remaining schedule: BYE, Commanders game, Raiders game, Packers game, Jaguars game, Chiefs game, Chargers game

2. New England Patriots (9-2), AFC East leader: The team, which reached nine wins for the first time in the league on Thursday night, is in prime position for its first district championship since Tom Brady led the team in 2019 and likely its first No. 1 seed in the playoffs since 2017. remaining schedule: Bengals, vs. Giants, BYE, vs. Bills, Ravens, Jets, vs. Dolphins

3. Indianapolis Colts (8-2), first in the AFC South: Charmin had a loose schedule leading up to the bye, but he can’t control who he plays. However, the lineup in the second half doesn’t seem to be as forgiving. remaining schedule: Chiefs vs. Texans, Jaguars vs. Seahawks, 49ers vs. Jaguars, Texans

4. Pittsburgh Steelers (6-4), AFC North leader: They have only one game left in the battle for first place in the division with Baltimore, and could face life without QB Aaron Rodgers in the short term. remaining schedule: Bears, vs. Bills, vs. Ravens, vs. Dolphins, vs. Lions, Browns, vs. Ravens.

5. Buffalo Bills (7-3), Wild Card No. 1: QB Josh Allen’s big performance on Sunday moved Buffalo up one seed, but the Bills were no closer to first place in the AFC East. A tough game looms Thursday night in Houston. remaining schedule: Texans, Steelers vs. Bengals, Patriots, Browns, Eagles vs. Jets

6. Los Angeles Chargers (7-4), 2nd Wild Card: The week off comes at just the right time for a battered team that was beaten by Duval County on Sunday. remaining schedule: BYE, vs. Raiders, vs. Eagles, Chiefs, Cowboys, vs. Texans, Broncos

7. Jacksonville Jaguars (6-4), third place wild card: They continue to collect potentially important head-to-head tiebreakers, with Sunday’s loss to the Bolts joining the Jags’ win over the Chiefs. remaining schedule: Cardinals, Titans, vs. Colts, vs. Jets, Broncos, vs. Colts, Titans

8. Houston Texans (5-5), chasing: They won three of four games, including two straight wins without injured QB CJ Stroud. If the Texans want to win the AFC South for the third year in a row, they’ll likely need to sweep the Colts while continuing to make strides. remaining schedule: vs. Bills, vs. Colts, vs. Chiefs, vs. Cardinals, vs. Raiders, vs. Chargers, vs. Colts

9. Kansas City Chiefs (5-5), chasing: After Sunday’s loss at Denver, their nine-year run at the top of the AFC West appears to have effectively ended. There’s still plenty of time to recover otherwise for a team that hasn’t missed an AFC Championship Game since Patrick Mahomes became QB1 in 2018. remaining schedule: vs. Colts, at Cowboys, vs. Texans, vs. Chargers, at Titans, vs. Broncos, at Raiders

10. Baltimore Ravens (5-5), chasing: They regained relevance and won four straight. But their best hope for reaching the postseason is winning their third straight AFC North title, considering they’ve already lost to KC and Houston. Their upcoming three-game homestand looks…winnable? remaining schedule: vs. Jets, vs. Bengals, vs. Steelers, vs. Bengals, vs. Patriots, vs. Packers, vs. Steelers

Dick Cheney left a mixed legacy on LGBTQ+ issues

0

play

WASHINGTON – It was the first time Dick Cheney publicly broke with George W. Bush over the issue of same-sex marriage. But it won’t be the last.

Bush, the 2000 Republican presidential candidate, held the traditional view that marriage should be between a man and a woman. Vice presidential candidate Cheney surprised many Americans when she said at a vice presidential debate in Kentucky just a month before the election that she believed people should be able to form any kind of relationship they wanted.

“Freedom means freedom for everyone,” he said, adding that it is no one’s job to regulate individual behavior in that regard.

Four years later, during another campaign, Cheney distanced herself from Bush again over same-sex marriage. Speaking at a town hall rally in Iowa, Cheney, referring to his daughter Mary, who is a lesbian, said same-sex marriage was “an issue that our family knows very well” and that a proposed amendment to the federal constitution that President Bush supported that defines marriage as between a man and a woman is unnecessary.

But despite his early support for same-sex couples, Cheney, who died on November 3, left behind a mixed legacy on LGBTQ+ issues.

Although he opposed the Federal Marriage Amendment, he never publicly campaigned against it. And not only did Bush and Cheney stay in the race in 2004 despite their differences, but their political campaign turned same-sex marriage into a wedge issue in order to drive conservative voters to the polls and help them win a second term.

“He could have stood or stood, but he chose to continue with the ticket,” said Brian Bond, CEO of PFLAG, a national nonprofit that supports LGBTQ+ people and their families. “I’m sure he loved his daughter, but he was a man of power and privilege. And in that moment, he was going to tear the baby apart. And I don’t know if that necessarily helped anyone.”

Stephen Hurwitz, a gay man who has known Mr. Cheney for 50 years, said Mr. Cheney deeply believed that Republicans should win the election and perhaps feared that “getting too strong on the[marriage]issue would affect Mr. Bush’s chances.”

“I don’t think he wanted that kind of responsibility because he was a true conservative believer,” Hurwitz said.

Hurwitz worked as a consultant for Cheney several years before she became secretary of defense under President George H.W. Bush in 1989. Hurwitz assumed a similar role under Donald Rumsfeld, who served as secretary of defense for six years under George W. Bush and Cheney.

Hurwitz said neither Cheney nor Rumsfeld, nor anyone else in the administration, gave him any special treatment because of his sexual orientation. “At that point, I was pretty well known for coming out as gay,” he said. But “it didn’t matter.”

“I don’t want you to quit.”

Being gay became an issue for Pete Williams, who served as the Pentagon’s chief press secretary when Cheney was secretary of defense.

Pentagon policy at the time prohibited gay men and women from serving in the military, and many gay service members were investigated and subsequently expelled from the military because of their sexual orientation.

Williams’ direction was little known until it was revealed in a 1991 article in the LGBTQ+ magazine The Advocate. This article seeks to draw attention to the inequity of discriminatory policies that target military personnel but do not equally apply to civilian civilians in positions of power.

Mr. Williams, like Mr. Cheney, was originally from Wyoming. He worked for Cheney when she was in Congress and then followed him to the Pentagon. He never discussed his sexual orientation with Cheney. But when the Advocate story was about to appear, he went to Cheney’s office and warned him.

“I said, ‘I’m here to resign. I definitely don’t want this to be a problem for you or the administration,'” Williams recalled in an interview with USA TODAY.

Cheney refused to accept his resignation. “He said, ‘No, I never want you to quit,’ and in no uncertain terms, ‘Go back to the office and do your job,'” Williams said.

The telephone on Williams’ desk had a button that, when pressed, called Cheney’s office directly. For days after our conversation about an upcoming magazine article, “I was sitting at my desk and every once in a while, the ‘SECDEF’ button would light up,” Williams said. “I picked up the phone and he said, ‘Are you OK? Are you OK?’ He was a big supporter of me and I was grateful for that.”

Hurwitz said Cheney spoke with Williams and asked him to persuade him not to resign. “Dick has said he wants the president to stay in office,” Hurwitz said. “And the president basically said there’s no problem.”

Williams remained in that position until the end of President George H.W. Bush’s term in 1993, when he became NBC News’ justice correspondent.

On marriage equality, gay rights activists praise Cheney for standing up for same-sex unions at a time when federal law defined marriage as the legal union of a man and a woman. Cheney’s view was that the regulation of marriage should be left to the states, not the federal government. But he also noted that Bush is the president, not him, and that Bush supports a federal constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.

During the 2004 presidential campaign, the Log Cabin Republican Party, a group of LGBTQ+ Republicans and their allies, used Cheney’s remarks in a 30-second television ad to campaign against the federal marriage amendment. The ad showed footage of Cheney saying during the 2000 vice presidential debate that states could reach different conclusions on same-sex marriage and that there should not necessarily be a federal policy on the issue.

Then the words “I agree” appeared on the screen.

Cheney’s daughter Mary married her partner Heather Poe in 2012, and the couple have two children.

Was it a courageous decision or a missed opportunity?

But Ruth Remy of Family Equality, a nonprofit organization that works with LGBTQ+ families, said Cheney’s comments that same-sex marriage should be a decision left to individual states have in some ways made it harder to get same-sex marriage recognized by the federal government.

“I truly believe he loved his daughter and cared for his grandchildren,” said Remy, the group’s vice president for public policy. “But I think because of Cheney’s position, Republicans can now say, I know and love gay people, but I’m still a conservative and these things should be left to the states.”

Mr. Cheney’s belief that the federal marriage amendment was not needed was “probably taken by some, perhaps many, as brave, but I think he was actually out of sync with the administration because just because it’s not necessary doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be done,” Remy said.

Same-sex marriage was not legal in all 50 states until 2015, when the U.S. Supreme Court issued a landmark ruling that found marriage a fundamental right and that state marriage bans were unconstitutional. Ten years after that decision, the high court on November 10 rejected the appeal of Kim Davis, a former Kentucky county official who refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples because of their religious beliefs, refusing to rehear the case.

Remy said Cheney had opportunities to influence the debate over federal marriage support in 2000 and 2004, but missed the moment.

“What his heart wanted from him and what politics wanted from him were very different,” she says. “And I think he’s going to be judged more by what he did politically than what his heart wanted.”

Homeowner charged with murdering house cleaner who went to wrong address

INDIANAPOLIS — An Indiana homeowner accused of fatally shooting a house cleaner who went to the wrong house has been charged with manslaughter, prosecutors announced Tuesday.

Boone County Prosecutor Kent Eastwood has charged Kurt Andersen, 62, with a Level 2 felony in the shooting death of Maria Florinda Rios Perez de Velazquez, a 32-year-old wife and mother of four. Andersen was booked into the Boone County Jail on a no-bail hold pending an initial court hearing, according to online jail records and prosecutors.

On November 5, police found Guatemalan immigrant Rios Perez dead on the front porch of a home in the Indianapolis suburb of Whitestown. She was shot in the head and died in her husband’s arms, according to the indictment.

Police said Rios Perez and her husband, Mauricio Velasquez, were part of a cleaning crew that mistakenly arrived at the wrong address. Velasquez previously told the Indianapolis Star, part of the USA TODAY Network, that the couple was trying to find the correct keys to the house when they heard gunshots and caught Rios-Perez as he fell.

Prosecutors’ decision to charge Andersen comes nearly two weeks after the shooting sparked a national debate about “standing your ground” and the Castle Doctrine. Eastwood said at a Nov. 17 press conference that an investigation found Andersen’s actions did not fall within the legal protections provided by the state’s “stand your ground” law.

“We cannot allow our emotions to influence our decisions,” Eastwood said at a press conference. “Our duty is to investigate the facts, apply the law fairly and equally, and ensure that justice is done without bias or influence. That is the only way the law can truly be just.”

‘Hard on the porch’: Details of shooting incident included in charging documents

According to the probable cause affidavit, Andersen told investigators that he and his wife were sleeping in the second-floor loft of their home when they heard “a commotion intensifying on the front porch.” He thought he heard “some type of key, tool, or device” being used on the door, according to the affidavit.

The affidavit said Andersen became afraid of the commotion and walked to the top of the stairs where he could see the front door and windows. Looking through the front window, I saw two people outside who appeared to be trying to open the door.

“Oh, this is happening, they’re trying to break in,” Andersen told investigators, speaking to himself. “What should I do? This disease is incurable. We have to do something now.”

According to the affidavit, Andersen said he made preparations in case someone broke into his home, including replacing his handgun with a Glock 48 9mm handgun in September after watching the video. He said he had never fired the new weapon and only bought it to protect his home.

Andersen told investigators he removed the gun from a locked box, loaded it and returned to the top of the stairs. He then witnessed the two “rushing” toward the door and “he stated they became increasingly aggressive,” the affidavit states.

He fired one shot through the closed front door, according to the affidavit. Shortly afterward, Andersen and his wife told investigators they heard a man screaming and crying at the front door.

Andersen admitted to investigators that the door never opened and that he did not identify himself before pulling the trigger. Andersen’s wife told investigators that neither she nor her husband went to the front door. She tried to do so, but her husband stopped her because he feared people outside might have guns, the affidavit states.

After the shooting, Andersen’s wife called 911, and Whitestown Metropolitan Police Department officers were dispatched around 6:50 a.m. local time. Officers found Velasquez kneeling over his wife’s body next to a large pool of blood on the front porch. Police said the bullet punctured the front door and struck Rios Perez in the right side of the head.

How did the cleaner get the wrong house?

A representative from Ryan Homes, which built the nearby Windswept Farms subdivision, told investigators that Rios Perez and her husband had planned to clean a model home in the same area as Andersen’s property.

According to the affidavit, Velasquez said he and his wife, both Guatemalan immigrants whose primary language is Spanish, received an address from their boss, entered Andersen’s home into their GPS, and arrived at their home.

The couple believed it was an unoccupied model home, according to the affidavit. When police entered the address into Google Maps, directions led them to a recently built home just east and behind Andersen’s home.

Rios Perez was trying to unlock the front door with the key he was given when he heard a gunshot. Her husband said he had been on the porch about 30 seconds to a minute before the gunshots, but Andersen told police it had been “more than a minute,” according to the affidavit.

“Mauricio stated that in the past he would call his supervisor to let him know if his keys were no longer working, but he did not have the opportunity to do so today,” the affidavit states.

Andersen and his wife initially refused orders from police to leave the home, then exited through the back door and were taken into custody, according to the affidavit. Rios Perez was pronounced dead at the scene.

When Andersen learned that Rios Perez was part of the cleaning crew that went to the wrong address, he “became upset and immediately bowed his head to the table,” the affidavit states. He told police he “didn’t intend for anything to happen to anyone.”

Indiana lawsuit reignites debate over ‘stand your ground’ law

According to Indiana law, voluntary manslaughter is a step below murder, meaning investigators believe Andersen “willfully or knowingly” killed Rios Perez “while acting under sudden fever.”

Officials said they believe in and are working to uphold Indiana’s “stand your ground” law, which protects a person’s right to self-defense. But Eastwood said the law didn’t apply because Andersen didn’t have “adequate information” to determine whether his actions were reasonable.

Andersen’s attorney, Guy Relford, a prominent Indiana Second Amendment lawyer, disagrees with the charges and said in a statement on social media that he “looks forward to proving in court that Mr. Andersen’s actions were fully justified by the ‘castle doctrine’ provisions of the Indiana Self-Defense Act.”

Wrong-placed shootings have plagued communities across the United States for decades, with seemingly innocent people being shot dead or seriously injured due to a simple mistake. For years, incidents like these have renewed debate about the country’s patchwork of “stand your ground” laws.

Christopher Slobogin, a law professor at Vanderbilt University and director of the school’s criminal justice program, previously told USA TODAY that self-defense laws have proliferated in recent years, and opponents worry that people will overreact and think they are legally justified.

Self-defense claims and “stand your ground” laws have been at the heart of several controversial cases, including the murders of Trayvon Martin in 2012 and Ahmaud Arbery in 2020, as well as the trials of Kyle Rittenhouse and Daniel Perry over the shooting of a protester in 2020.

In recent years, incidents similar to the Indiana shooting have sparked outrage and garnered national attention. These include the 2023 shooting death of Ralph Yahr by an 86-year-old white man in Missouri after the 16-year-old black boy went to the wrong house. Two days later, a 20-year-old woman was shot and killed by a homeowner in upstate New York after her car accidentally pulled into her driveway.

Judge blocks President Trump from deploying National Guard in Memphis

play

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Tennessee judge on Thursday temporarily blocked the deployment of the National Guard to Memphis, siding with state and local lawmakers who argue that using the National Guard for law enforcement violates the state constitution.

In a 35-page court order filed late Nov. 17, Davidson County Commissioner Patricia Moskal said Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee’s authority to deploy the Guard is “not unlimited.” The judge ruled that Memphis’ crime rate was not a “severe emergency” or “disaster” that would warrant Lee, as commander-in-chief of the National Guard, to send in troops.

“The governor may only call out the militia in case of rebellion or invasion, and only upon a declaration by the General Assembly that public safety requires it,” Moskal wrote.

“And while the Constitution refers to the ‘armed forces’ of Tennessee, the Tennessee Military Code defines the ‘armed forces’ as the Tennessee National Guard and establishes the governor’s power and authority as commander-in-chief of the National Guard, including when and under what conditions (sic) the National Guard may be called into active duty,” she continued.

Moskal also said the governor’s decision to deploy the Guard is not subject to judicial review, something attorneys with the Tennessee Attorney General’s Office argued during a Nov. 3 hearing on the preliminary injunction. She also said there had been no formal order to mobilize the Guard.

“The absence of a clear documentary record substantiating a request made directly to Governor Lee or an order or order by Governor Lee regarding the activation of the Tennessee National Guard makes it difficult for the court to evaluate the circumstances and purpose of the activation and deployment of the Tennessee National Guard to Memphis,” Moskal wrote.

In September, President Donald Trump announced he would deploy the Guard to Memphis and continue an aggressive campaign to use military force as part of a crackdown on crime. President Trump has already deployed Guard troops to Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., amid strong criticism and legal challenges from Democrats in those areas.

But in Memphis, Trump is targeting a Republican-controlled state whose governor had welcomed intervention. Democratic state and local lawmakers have criticized President Trump’s plan, and Memphis Mayor Paul Young previously said he didn’t think it was “a way to curb crime.”

What did the Prime Minister say about the merits of this case?

Moskal said the Democratic officials suing Lee will likely be successful in arguing that Lee violated Tennessee law, adding that she doesn’t need to decide whether they are likely to win the constitutionality argument on that basis.

In granting the temporary restraining order, Moskal said the plaintiff must post $50,000 bail before the restraining order takes effect. The state said in a Nov. 14 legal filing that immediately withdrawing Guard members from Memphis could cost “at least” $8 million.

If a restraining order is granted, bail is often issued. This bond is used to protect against financial harm to anyone who may ultimately be found to have been unreasonably restricted from doing something. The injunction will not take effect unless the bond is paid.

According to the state’s proposal, “more than $6.8 million remains unpaid on existing contracts for vehicles, hotels, and meals.”

There is currently approximately $560,000 outstanding on the vehicle contract. The filing also said there are hotel and dining contracts for the Guard, totaling $5.2 million and $1.1 million, respectively.

“An injunction requiring the reassignment of Guard members supporting the Memphis Safety Response Force would require termination of these contracts and could give rise to claims for damages,” the filing states. “Furthermore, short-notice compliance with the injunction will have a direct negative economic impact on Guard members who will not be able to receive pay without an appropriate pathway back to non-Guardian employment.”

The state also cited a 2015 study from Middle Tennessee State University that argued the Guard’s withdrawal from Memphis could result in “additional economic loss to Memphis businesses.” According to the filing, there were “significant financial and literal benefits to existing Guard operations in Shelby County.”

Lawsuits filed over security guard deployment in Chicago and Los Angeles

The deployment comes after judges blocked similar moves in Chicago and Portland, Oregon. Government lawyers in both cases said the military was needed to protect federal employees and property from protesters.

Last month in Chicago, U.S. District Judge April M. Perry questioned the Department of Homeland Security’s interpretation of the situation and granted part of a request by the state of Illinois to block the deployment of troops to the nation’s third-largest city.

Perry said sending in the military would only “add fuel to the fire that the defendant himself started.” She cited a number of recent legal decisions handed down against the Trump administration in federal court in Chicago.

A Los Angeles trial court ruled that President Trump’s decision to send the Guard to the area over the summer was illegal. The Trump administration appealed the ruling to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, which reversed a lower court’s ruling in June, citing escalating violence and property damage during anti-ICE protests.

The Washington, D.C., city government also sued the Trump administration in September, arguing that the deployment of 2,200 security forces is unconstitutional and violates federal law.

Larry Summers resigns to repair personal relationship after Epstein report

0

play

The former president of Harvard University and former U.S. Treasury secretary told the university newspaper that he is stepping back from public life to repair personal ties following recent revelations of his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

On November 12, the House Oversight Committee released more than 20,000 pages of emails related to the disgraced investor. The treasure included a message indicating that Lawrence Summers, Harvard’s president from 2001 to 2006, asked the disgraced investor for relationship advice in 2019.

Epstein, who died in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges, was ruled a suicide, but he likely sexually abused hundreds of women and girls and trafficked them to other wealthy men.

“I am deeply ashamed of my actions and recognize the pain it has caused,” the Harvard Crimson quoted Summers as saying in a statement to the paper Monday evening. “I take full responsibility for my poor decision to continue communicating with Mr. Epstein.”

Summers, who served as Treasury secretary in the Bill Clinton administration, is a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress and director of the Mossabah Rahmani Center for Business and Government at the Harvard Kennedy School. He teaches five courses at the university, including two undergraduate classes, and will remain as director of the center, The Crimson reported.

“While we continue to fulfill our teaching obligations, we will withdraw from public life as part of a broader effort,” his statement continued.

Summers’ decision follows Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) recently calling on Harvard to sever ties with its former president, who showed “extremely poor judgment.”

“If Summers is so incompetent to distance himself from Jeffrey Epstein in the face of public knowledge of his sexual crimes against underage girls, then Summers cannot be trusted to advise our nation’s politicians, policymakers, and institutions, nor to teach generations of students at Harvard and other universities,” Warren told CNN in a statement.

President Trump said last week that he had asked the Justice Department and FBI to investigate Democrats associated with Epstein, including Summers, Clinton and JPMorgan Chase.

Released emails show that Mr. Summers corresponded regularly with Mr. Epstein until his arrest in July 2019. Many of Epstein’s wealthy, famous and academic elites have come under fire for continuing to communicate with him despite his 2008 plea of guilty to child prostitution charges in Florida.

Is hot or cold climate more dangerous? The answer may surprise you.

0

Heat-related deaths usually make headlines, but new research has raised concerns about the number and characteristics of cold-related deaths.

play

Every summer, we hear about the deadly and real dangers of extreme heat. But perhaps we need to pay more attention to the effects of winter cold.

Researchers found that 65% of temperature-related deaths over the past 25 years were due to cold, and the remaining 35% were heat-related. Overall, about 69,256 people who died in the United States during this period had exposure to extreme temperatures recorded as an underlying or contributing factor, according to a new study.

The study results are published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Most deaths are preventable

“Our findings show that both heat and cold continue to kill thousands of people each year in the United States, but those deaths are largely preventable,” lead author Shadi Abouhashem of the Massachusetts General Brigham Heart and Vascular Institute said in a statement.

Abohachem said the main message from this study is that exposure to both heat and cold continues to cause preventable deaths, and these deaths are not evenly distributed. Adults 65 and older, men, and non-Hispanic blacks consistently face the highest risk in both hot and cold climates. “These patterns have remained stable for 25 years, highlighting the need for targeted protection for the most vulnerable groups.”

This study breaks new ground, as most previous studies have relied on predictions or ecological models, often looking at heat and cold separately. “Our study uses 25 years of real-world data from the United States and analyzes heat-related and cold-related deaths side-by-side by age, gender, and race/ethnicity. This provides a clearer, more up-to-date picture of who is most affected and where the greatest disparities lie.”

We usually focus more on heat-related deaths than on cold-related deaths. Should I reconsider that?

play

Watch as Florida man rescues ‘frozen’ green iguana

A Florida man rescued a green iguana that passed out from the cold and fell from a tree as the weather turned colder.

Heat is a growing concern with climate change and definitely deserves attention, Abohachem said. “However, our findings and many global studies show that overall cold exposure still accounts for the majority of temperature-related deaths, in large part because cold-related deaths often occur on moderately cool days, not just during extreme events, and most are associated with exacerbation of chronic disease rather than hypothermia itself.”

“That said, the balance is rapidly shifting due to climate change,” he said in an email to USA TODAY. “As highlighted in recent studies, heat-related mortality is increasing faster than cold-related mortality is decreasing, so the relative burden is expected to shift towards heat.

“Thus, rather than shifting focus from heat or cold, our public health efforts must prepare for both hazards (especially high-risk groups) at the same time, with increasing urgency for heat as temperatures continue to rise,” he told USA TODAY.

Are there hidden risks associated with cold weather?

Yes, cold exposure can worsen underlying conditions such as heart disease, respiratory disease, and poor circulation, according to Abohahem, but in many cases, dramatic “extreme cold” does not occur.

“Many of these deaths occur indoors with inadequate heating, especially among older people. We can make a big difference by improving home insulation, ensuring access to heat and checking in on vulnerable populations during colder months.”

The National Weather Service has long said that heat is the deadliest weather phenomenon in the United States. Why does the disparity occur?

The National Weather Service often uses incident-based reports tied to specific acute weather events, he reports.

“Our study uses data from death certificates, where coroners record whether heat or cold contributed to a person’s death. Death certificates record far more cases involving chronic or indirect effects, so we expect the numbers to be even higher. These are two different indicators, each serving a different purpose.”

Weather service graphs show that cold-related deaths are far fewer than heat-related deaths. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the average number of deaths per year due to heat over the past 30 years is 238, while the number of deaths per year due to cold is 38. “That’s probably because the NWS only counts deaths associated with specific weather events, such as heat waves and winter storms,” he says.

“Most cold-related deaths occur quietly indoors or on moderately cold days and may not be reported to the NWS or at all, but are noted on death certificates. That’s why medical data consistently shows that cold-related deaths are far more prevalent,” Abouhashem said.

Were the results surprising?

“We expected older adults to be at higher risk, but the disparity was particularly striking among men and non-Hispanic blacks,” Abohachem said. “We were also struck by how consistent these gaps were over time, confirming that temperature-related mortality is not only an environmental issue, but also an equity issue.”

2026 Dodge Charger Six Pack fixes Daytona EV’s biggest flaw

0

play

new dodge charger It’s a very confusing car. there is no room for denial Huge list of defects found in Daytona EVBut despite these, its innate charm worked its magic on many editors. I feel like there’s a fundamentally good car out there somewhere, and I want to support it instead of tearing it down. The 2026 Dodge Charger Scat Pack, powered by a six-pack twin-turbo inline-6, is a better car in some ways and just a different car in others.

correct shortcomings and correct mistakes

At a basic level, a gas-powered six-pack solves EVs’ biggest weakness. EVs are significantly lighter, can travel much farther on a gas tank than an EV with a full battery, and fill up in minutes. More than that, it makes real noise and creates a big smoky burnout. The Daytona EV may be a good car at heart, but it wasn’t the car Charger (and Challenger) faithful wanted. A six pack is almost like that.

Other than the tailpipes and slightly different front ends, the gas-powered Charger Sixpack and EV Charger Daytona are virtually indistinguishable from the outside. From the inside, they are almost identical. However, the way we drive and the emotional responses it evokes are markedly different.

EVs are definitely faster in a straight line. The response is particularly good from roll, and the motor is more responsive in all situations. Its weight and low center of gravity also make it feel planted to the road. However, a weight reduction of approximately 1,100 pounds makes the Charger Sixpack noticeably lighter. (Yes, there’s a big cavity under the car that houses the EV’s battery pack.) This EV is the best-handling Dodge Charger or Challenger ever made, giving that honor to the Six Pack. It feels more like a sports sedan than a straight muscle car because there’s far less mass that needs to change direction. A really, really big sports sedan. Something like, “Longer and wider than a Toyota Sienna minivan.” It’s sporty, just like the AMG S63 is sporty.

Highly flammable situation

Of course the focus is It now has a twin-turbo Hurricane inline-6 under the hood and has been rebranded as the Sixpack here. This Scat Pack model boasts 550 horsepower and 531 lb-ft of torque. The R/T model, which arrives next year, will make 420 horsepower and 468 pound-feet. In the Scat Pack, the engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic and wet-clutch transfer case to send power to all four wheels. Rear traction is aided by a standard mechanical limited-slip differential. The redline is just 6,000 rpm, which is unusually low for this type of engine, but Dodge says it gave it everything it wanted from the engine, so there was no need to raise it. However, that doesn’t mean it can’t be even more powerful in future models.

Dodge also claims a 0-60 mph sprint time of 3.9 seconds and a quarter-mile elapsed time of 12.2 seconds. We’ll have to test and see what times we get, but after three passes around the 8-mile drag strip, we found the car to be surprisingly stable, with only a few hundredths of a second difference between each run. It’s a little annoying that the launch controls are buried deep in some menus, but once you’re on that screen, using them in the tree is easy.

The line lock feature is more complicated, requiring you to stand on the brake, press and hold the OK button on the steering wheel, release the brake without pressing the button, and let the gas flow to the floor while holding the button. If you release the button you can escape, but if you release the button before the wheel spins everything will be cancelled. A pat on the head or a good belly rub may work as advertised, but it takes a lot of steps to get burnt out.

Once warmed up and under control, the Six Pack feels strong off the line. From the roll, it’s not all that impressive, as the car’s weight of about 4,800 pounds speaks for itself. Instead of squeezing the throttle, press the throttle to drop the transmission one gear. It’s a lag city below 2,300 rpm, but once the turbo kicks in (or jumps up with a downshift) and unleashes all 30 psi on the piston, it surges with authority.

The transmission usually operates correctly, but even in Sport mode it can sometimes lose synchronization when exiting tight corners. The paddle shifters, even if too small, correct this and are a true manual mode that doesn’t automatically upshift at redline. We like it, but 6,000 rpm comes on quickly in lower gears, so you have to keep your eye on it.

On the other hand, how much power is sent forward depends on all these modes. Left to its own devices, the car sends 50% of its power forward. All-wheel drive cars are generally available, although the front axle clutch can be disengaged for fuel economy reasons. Selecting Sport mode changes the torque distribution to 40 percent forward and 60 percent rearward. Future software updates may provide other ratios. When set to Sport, you can select rear-wheel drive mode to send all the power to the rear, but think twice before you do so.

AWD has a reason.

Dodge engineers have been very clear about why the Six Pack has standard all-wheel drive, and it’s for performance as well as winter driving. Simply put, the car can’t put all the power down to the rear wheels. If the turbo is applied, the rear wheels will be blown off. All-wheel drive spreads the power across twice as much rubber, giving you the same effect on drag strips and twisty roads. To be clear, it doesn’t drive like an all-wheel drive car. The nose never comes out of corners. Sending power forward only tames the rear, allowing you to safely use the throttle aggressively.

Putting your car in rear-wheel drive mode is a great way to do burnouts and drifts, but that doesn’t work. If stability control is on, more than moderate throttle input during a turn will require computer intervention. If you turn off stability, you will be facing sideways or backwards. If you really want to go fast with the Charger Sixpack, leave it in all-wheel drive so you can hook it up. Otherwise, get ready to show off your Mustang with your car and coffee. genuine Looks like an avoidable wreck.

Also, annoyingly, rear-wheel drive can be switched back to all-wheel drive while driving, but only when the car comes to a complete stop. However, Dodge says this may change in a future software update.

Leaving it in all-wheel drive solves this problem at the cost of some steering feel. To be honest, the steering is numb, but there is some feedback from the dash when power is not sent to the front. However, the need to drive with stability control negates that advantage. The steering is also a bit slow, locking up more than necessary in tight corners and requiring quick hands when trying to control drifts.

Isn’t it this screen again?

Changing these settings means digging into the infotainment screen. The infotainment screen is laggy and the menus are too layered. Rear drive can only be selected in Sport mode, and other settings such as steering weight can only be adjusted in Custom mode. The two-mode exhaust is tied to the engine’s calibration, resulting in either a gentle, quiet exhaust note, or an aggressive, loud exhaust note. As a result, we can’t fully customize the driving experience as much as we would like. Dodge engineers are aware, and yes, this may be fixed in a future over-the-air software update.

I’m happy to report that it didn’t have any bugs like the last car I reviewed. Almost all the software glitches seem to have been fixed, but this one made a completely independent decision to adjust the driver’s seat lumbar support to maximum while driving. Dodge is aware of the bug and has already fixed it in recently manufactured cars.

loud and proud

The dual-mode exhaust system we mentioned is unlikely to appeal to V8 enthusiasts, but those who just want to put gas in their Charger will be satisfied. The vibration on start is solid and reminds me of a BMW M3 or M4, but once you’re on the road it loses much of its edge and sounds like any other straight-six engine. Dodge manages to tamp down the chainsaw whine a bit in loud mode, but it’s more impressive inside the car (where active noise canceling improves sound quality) than outside. A few guys in V8 Mustangs asked us to rev up at stop signs, but we weren’t particularly impressed.

Compared to older SRT and Hellcat models, the new Scat Pack Sixpack is mostly quiet. A Mopar Direct Connection cat-back exhaust is said to be available in the future, but it’s not yet available and is expected to cost close to $4,000 when it does. Dodge would do well to take a page from Ram’s Hemi playbook and make it standard for the Scat Pack. I hope it doesn’t drone like the stock exhaust in loud mode on the highway.

How did we get here and where will we end up?

Rather than just cramming a battery under the hood of an internal combustion vehicle, Dodge designed the charger to easily store the battery pack in the same way it would with a gasoline engine. Ideally, this would allow companies to sell nearly identical vehicles to completely different customers. Normally, this kind of technical compromise requires serious skepticism, but Dodge has done a great job of serving two masters at once.

A starting price of $56,990 is a lot, but unfortunately that’s how much muscle cars cost these days. A Mustang GT with the Performance Package and automatic transmission costs the same, but is four-tenths of a second slower from 60 to quarter (even slower with the manual). Look, you can add a $4,000 exhaust system and still be okay. It costs $5,000 less than the Mustang Dark Horse, yet has more power. And, to be honest, you might as well pay for it. That’s because the next R/T model is only $5,000 cheaper and gives up 130 horsepower and 63 pound-feet, increasing its weight-to-power ratio from 8.7 pounds per horsepower to 11.4. I haven’t driven it yet, but with numbers like these, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Six Pack R/T is dropped from the lineup, similar to the EV Daytona R/T.

If you’re ready to buy a new gas-powered Charger and don’t feel the need to wait to see if Dodge brings back the V8 as everyone is sure they will, there’s finally a car for you.

Trump touts efforts to make things more affordable at McDonald’s summit

0

play

President Donald Trump has never been shy about his love for McDonald’s.

Addressing the fast-food giant’s franchise owners at the McDonald’s Impact Summit in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 17, President Trump paid tribute to the Golden Arches in an effort to shore up his self-proclaimed mantle as a champion of affordability issues.

The Summit is an annual forum for McDonald’s executives, franchise owners, and other stakeholders to discuss corporate strategy.

“It’s an honor to stand before you as the first former McDonald’s fry cook to become president of the United States,” President Trump said, more than a year after wearing a yellow and blue apron and serving fries to customers at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania.

He was candidate Trump at the time. And he wanted to connect with working-class voters on issues of affordability. A year later, as Democrats swept the nation in November with a focus on affordability, Mr. Trump sought to highlight his attempts to curb inflation and emphasize his love for the working-class staple McDonald’s.

“While other politicians fly around in campaign planes loaded with expensive catering, Trump Force One (his personal plane) was on Air Force One before he got on Air Force One, which is also a very nice plane, we only served McDonald’s almost every time,” he said.

“And I once had Bobby Kennedy eat a Big Mac,” he added, referring to the health secretary and member of the Kennedy family, a prominent political family.

Even Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a “Make America Healthy Again” campaigner who shuns ultra-processed foods, liked the burger, Trump said.

“He told me he loved it,” Trump said. “He didn’t want to make it public.”

President Trump went on to emphasize efforts to eliminate various taxes, ease regulations, and increase investment to boost the economy.

“We don’t tax tips, we don’t tax overtime, we don’t tax Social Security for our great seniors,” he said, listing the tax cuts in his signature bill that Congress passed in July.

Similar to the November 5th Truth Social post, President Trump again claimed that Walmart’s 2025 Thanksgiving meal cost 25% less than in 2024.

However, a FactCheck.org analysis found that the price of Walmart’s 2025 Thanksgiving meal, which consisted of pre-selected items, was 25% lower than in 2024, but also included grocery items and a variety of food brands.

The publication says, “Comparing the same basket of products to meals in 2024, there will still be a decline in prices, but the decline will be smaller – 6.5% by our calculations.”

According to Consumer Price Index statistics, the average price of groceries in the United States in September was 2.7% higher than in September 2024 under former President Joe Biden. However, the inflation rate also reached 9.1% in June 2022 under the Biden administration, the highest in 40 years.

In 2025, overall food prices are expected to rise faster than their historical average growth rate. Prices for all foods are projected to rise 3% in 2025, according to a September forecast from the USDA Economic Research Service.

President Trump signed an executive order on Nov. 14 eliminating tariffs on products such as beef, coffee, tomatoes and oranges to address affordability concerns.

He also praised McDonald’s for “recommitting to affordable options.”

“We would like to give a special thank you to McDonald’s for reducing prices on their most popular items and bringing back Extra Value Meals,” he said.

Then he fulfilled his own wish.

“No matter who you are, everyone loves something at McDonald’s. There’s always something to eat,” he said. “I like fish, I like it. I think you could use a little more tartar sauce.”

Cynthia Erivo projected her childhood pain onto ‘Wicked’ and Elphaba

“Wicked” star Cynthia Erivo talks to USA TODAY about her inspiring new book, “Simply More.”

play

  • Cynthia Erivo’s new conversational memoir, Simple More, will be published on November 18th.
  • The actress will return as the witch Elphaba in the film sequel “Wicked: For Good” on November 21st.
  • Could the new “Wicked” finally win her an Oscar (and her EGOT)?

Cynthia Erivo’s new book is as singular as she is.

While many celebrity memoirs are a no-nonsense account of the highs and lows of their careers, Simply More (out November 18th) reads like a warm, lively conversation between old friends. Throughout the book, Erivo uses her own life experiences as a mirror for readers to reflect on themselves, asking questions such as “Who raised you?” “What magic did you discover when you were young?”

“That’s how I’ve always written,” Erivo, 38, said over Zoom on the eve of the Brazilian premiere of “Wicked: For Good” (in theaters Nov. 21). The British actress aims to provoke thoughtful discussion without getting too bogged down in formality or cliché.

“One of the first chapters I started writing was about my father,” Erivo says. It started as a list of realizations, and “eventually became a poem,” he says. “It just came naturally because I didn’t want to limit myself in any way.”

Cynthia Erivo conveyed to Elphaba the “pain” of being abandoned by her father

In Simply More, Erivo writes candidly about her decades-long estrangement from her father, who disowned her when she was 16 after an argument at a London train station. She reflected on the “bizarre irony” of having a gap in her front teeth despite both being able to sing, and said: “I’m okay with the fact that we’re not in a relationship, because the truth is we don’t need it.”

Erivo also describes his deep connection to Wicked heroine Elphaba, who also longed for her father’s love and approval.

“I’m sure time and therapy helped heal that, but going through the process of this role made it very clear to me that this was what I was trying to get,” Erivo says. “Being able to use Elphaba to relieve some of that pain was a really healthy thing and really helpful for me. It crystallized what I’ve been going through, and I’m glad I finally found a place to put it all.”

In other emotional chapters, Erivo writes about her journey with queerness. The confusion and heartbreak of trying to bury my sexuality as a teenager, and not dating a woman until my late 20s. Erivo’s mother and sister have struggled with her coming out, and Erivo said it’s an area she’s “still navigating.” But she has learned to give them patience and grace while being unapologetically herself.

“The time it takes you to get to a place where you accept yourself is also the time you have to give to others,” Erivo says. “This is the new normal. They still love me and want to be there for me. It’s important to give all parts of me space to adjust.”

‘Wicked: For Good’ star brings ‘dignity and hope’ to all characters

Throughout the book, Erivo talks about the blatant racism and stinging microaggressions she has encountered throughout her life. In one shocking example at London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, she was told to sing behind a curtain while her white classmates lip-synced her voice. And when she appeared as Celie in the musical The Color Purple in London, she recalled that critics complained that the stage show “didn’t have enough violence” and that her resilient character wasn’t as “gray” and “decrepit” as she had endured years of abuse.

The show explored how Erivo will approach all of her future characters, including her Oscar-nominated roles as Harriet Tubman in Harriet and Elphaba in Wicked.

“They are going through so much pain that all I can do is instill real dignity and hope in them,” Erivo said. “Sometimes the people who have the most joy are the ones who have the most pain, because that’s all they have to hold on to. Celie was one of those characters who really believed in always looking for bright moments in life, because there aren’t that many in life. Why doesn’t she laugh? Why doesn’t she take care of herself as best she can?”

“It’s always baffled me that someone who is going through something is actively trying to find a way to not feel that way, yet people want to see her get stomped on.”

Cynthia Erivo pokes fun at the ‘darkness’ and ‘sexuality’ of her solo play ‘Dracula’

Erivo has been traveling the world promoting “Wicked: For Good,” and awards experts predict she will be nominated for another Oscar. She’s already three-quarters of the way to EGOT, having won an Emmy, Grammy and Tony Award for “The Color Purple.”

Next up, she will star in the film adaptation of Jodie Comer’s Tony Award-winning play Prima Facier and lead her own one-woman play Dracula, which opens in London in February. Erivo appears as one of 23 characters in the play, directed by Kip Williams (The Picture of Dorian Gray).

“Kip and I have had great conversations about desire, shame, darkness, and what Dracula can really represent,” Erivo says. “Humans are ashamed to talk about sexuality and sex in general. This is an opportunity for us to open the door wide open about how it affects people.”

The show comes on the heels of Erivo’s critically acclaimed performance as Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, which drew backlash from conservative critics for casting a queer black woman as the savior. With each new role, from Elphaba to Jesus to Dracula, Erivo wants to change the perception of who can play which characters and make people rethink about iconic figures.

Although she doesn’t have any big plans for what the future holds, Erivo says there are “little clues” floating around “in the conversations I have and the music that keeps playing.” “Action, drama and romance are always something that keeps me showing myself. I feel like that could be the next step in my life.”

Tesla recalls 10,500 batteries due to fire and burn hazard

Tesla is recalling more than 10,000 batteries designed for energy storage and home use following reports of multiple fires, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

Approximately 10,500 certain Tesla Powerwall 2 AC battery power systems are subject to a recall due to the risk of serious fire and burn hazards, as well as the risk of serious injury or death, according to the CPSC.

The recall, which began Nov. 13, says the lithium-ion battery cells in certain Powerwall 2 systems can cause the units to stop functioning and overheat, causing smoke and fire during normal use.

Tesla has received 22 reports of batteries overheating, including six reports of smoke and five reports of fire, “resulting in minor property damage.” No injuries were reported, according to the CPSC.

A similar recall was launched in Australia in September after the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) received reports that Powerwall 2 units were “emitting smoke or flames and causing minor property damage.”

Which Tesla batteries are subject to recall?

The Powerwall battery is a backup power source to power your home and works with Tesla’s rooftop solar products to collect and store energy for later use in situations such as power outages.

In a separate notice on its website, Tesla blamed the problem on “a defective third-party battery cell,” without naming the third-party manufacturer. The recall issue only affects some Powerwall 2 customers and does not affect Powerwall 3 products.

The affected units were sold for approximately $8,000 between November 2020 and December 2022 through Tesla.com/powerwall and authorized Tesla installers nationwide, according to the CPSC notice.

To see if your Powerwall 2 system is affected, open the Tesla app and check the official message. Tesla said it had remotely released or removed energy from “most” of the affected equipment. Users with affected batteries will see a message stating that the Powerwall has been disabled and will be replaced.

“Your Powerwall 2 is part of a subset of units that may contain a third-party cell defect,” the notice states. “Your unit has already been retired or has been retired. Tesla will replace it free of charge. Our team or an authorized installer will contact you to schedule service.”

What to do if you have a recalled Tesla battery

Customers with affected Powerwall 2 products should have already received a notification from Tesla via the app or other contact information on file. Tesla says solar power will continue while the battery is discharged, but backup power will be temporarily unavailable until a replacement is installed.

Tesla or an authorized installer will contact you directly via email or phone to schedule a free removal and replacement of your battery system.

Tesla says the authorized installer who originally installed the battery system should be the first point of contact for the replacement process. Customers can also contact Tesla Support at powerwallsupportna@tesla.com or by phone at 1877 961 7652.

How did Diane Ladd die? Laura Dern’s mother dies of respiratory failure

0

The cause of death of Oscar-nominated actress Diane Ladd, mother of fellow actress Laura Dern, has been announced.

Rudd, who was 89 years old at the time of her death on November 3, died of “acute respiratory failure due to chronic hypoxic respiratory failure,” according to a death certificate obtained by People magazine.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, respiratory failure is a condition in which there is “too much oxygen or too much carbon dioxide” in the body. Health problems can occur acutely (all at once) or chronically (gradually over time).

USA TODAY has reached out to Rudd and Dern’s representatives for comment.

According to People magazine, the actress’ death certificate states that Rudd suffered from interstitial lung disease for several years before her death. Additionally, esophageal motility disorder, a type of gastrointestinal disease, has also been cited as a major contributing factor to her death.

Rudd, who died at her home in Ojai, California, was cremated on November 10, People reported.

Laura Dern mourns the death of her mother Diane Ladd

Born in Laurel, Mississippi, Ladd began acting in the late 1950s on television crime series such as “Decoys” and “Naked City.” She worked steadily for the next ten years, finding success on screen in 1974 when she played prostitute Ida Sessions in Roman Polanski’s classic film noir Chinatown, and in 1989 as Chevy Chase’s proud mother in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.

Rudd married actor Bruce Dern in 1960, but they divorced nine years later. They had two daughters, Laura and Diane, but the latter died at just 18 months after a tragic pool accident. The mother-daughter duo co-starred in films and TV shows including the dark comedy “Wild at Heart,” the historical drama “Rambling Rose,” David Lynch’s surreal “Inland Empire,” and the HBO drama “Enlightened.”

Dern broke the news of her mother’s death in an emotional statement to The Hollywood Reporter on November 3.

“Diane Ladd, my great hero and my profound gift as a mother, passed by me this morning,” Dern, 58, said. “She was the best daughter, mother, grandmother, actress, artist and empathetic spirit that only a dream could create.”

He added: “We were blessed to have her and she is now flying with the angels.”

Explaining 4WD and AWD for everyday drivers

0

play

  • AWD and 4WD have similar names, but they are very different.
  • AWD is always active in most vehicles, but you can customize 4WD depending on the situation.

Although many people use the terms four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive interchangeably, they are very different.

Although they share many similarities and are available on similar types of vehicles, they operate in unique ways. Four-wheel drive (4×4) is found in pickup trucks and rugged SUVs, while all-wheel drive is found in most SUVs and many sedans and crossovers. So what’s the difference between the two drivetrains?

What is all-wheel drive?

All-wheel drive (AWD) vehicles use a center differential that provides equal power to the front and rear wheels as needed. This allows all-wheel drive vehicles to perform well in everyday driving. Excellent performance in rain, snow and slippery driving conditions. AWD is standard on most SUVs, crossovers, and many sedans.

What is four-wheel drive?

Four-wheel drive (4WD) is primarily found in trucks and rugged SUVs. This drivetrain works by sending power to all four wheels, but the driver can select different modes depending on the driving situation.

Many 4×4 vehicles have the option to switch from 2WD to 4WD and other driving modes depending on the vehicle. The standard mode is 2H (2+), which is ideal for driving on general roads on sunny days. 4H (4 High) or 4A (4 Automatic) are suitable for wet, icy or muddy roads. 4L, on the other hand, is a great option for extreme mud, snow, and rock crawling.

Most 4×4 trucks and SUVs are equipped with larger off-road capable tires, as opposed to the regular all-season tires found on all-wheel drive vehicles. These sturdier tires are great on dirt and dirt roads, but are less comfortable on regular roads.

What are they best for?

All-wheel drive is ideal for everyday driving under normal conditions, and no additional input from the driver is required for this system to function. AWD allows you to drive comfortably even on slippery surfaces such as paved roads. Another advantage that AWD has over 4WD is that AWD is much more comfortable on the road compared to 4WD. However, AWD is less fuel efficient than front-wheel drive.

4x4s, on the other hand, are ideal for off-roading because they handle rugged dirt roads and trails well and can be customized by the driver depending on the difficulty of the terrain. 2WD trucks tend to weigh less on average and carry more payload, while 4WD trucks perform better on dirt roads and offer better traction while towing.

UN Security Council adopts US resolution on President Trump’s Gaza plan

The UN resolution is seen as crucial to legitimizing the interim governing body and reassuring countries considering sending troops to Gaza.

play

WASHINGTON, Nov 17 (Reuters) – The United Nations Security Council on Monday voted to adopt a U.S. draft resolution supporting President Donald Trump’s plan to end the war in Gaza and authorizing the creation of an international stabilization force for the Palestinian enclave.

Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas last month agreed to the first phase of President Trump’s 20-point plan for Gaza, a two-year ceasefire and hostage release agreement, a UN resolution seen as crucial to legitimizing the transitional governing structure and reassuring countries considering sending troops to Gaza.

The text of the resolution states that member states can participate in a peace commission envisioned as an interim authority to oversee Gaza’s reconstruction and economic recovery. It also authorized the creation of an international stabilization force to ensure Gaza’s demilitarization process, including the disposal of weapons and the destruction of military infrastructure.

President Trump’s 20-point plan is included as an appendix to the resolution.

Russia, which has veto power in the Security Council, had previously indicated that it might oppose the resolution, but abstained from voting and allowed the resolution to pass.

The Palestinian Authority issued a statement Friday supporting the U.S.-drafted resolution.

The resolution is controversial in Israel because it refers to the possibility of a future state for the Palestinians.

The resolution states that if the Palestinian Authority implements its reform program and the redevelopment of Gaza progresses, “the conditions may finally be in place for a credible path to self-determination and statehood for the Palestinian people.”

“The United States will establish a dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians to agree on a political horizon for peaceful and prosperous coexistence.”

Under pressure from right-wing lawmakers in his government, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that Israel remains opposed to a Palestinian state and is committed to demilitarizing Gaza “both the easy way and the hard way.”

Hamas has so far refused to disarm. The Hamas-led umbrella group of Palestinian factions issued a statement late Sunday opposing the resolution, calling it a dangerous step to impose foreign guardianship on the territory and saying the proposed resolution was in Israel’s interests.

Tesla escapes class action lawsuit with legal victory

A California judge has ruled that more than 6,000 black workers at Tesla Inc TSLA.O’s main assembly plant cannot sue for alleged class-based racial harassment, overturning an earlier ruling in a landslide victory for Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk’s electric car maker.

California Superior Court Judge Peter Baucon ruled Friday that the 2017 lawsuit cannot proceed as a class action because many of the 200 workers randomly selected to testify ahead of a trial scheduled for 2026 were not willing to testify.

Bolkon said he could not believe that the experiences of a small sample of workers could be applied to the entire class.

Another judge certified the class in 2024, based on the belief that trials in large cases were manageable, Bolkon said.

Tesla did not respond to a request for comment on Monday. The company said it does not tolerate harassment in the workplace and has terminated employees who engaged in racial misconduct.

Plaintiffs’ attorney Lawrence Organ said many of the people randomly selected to testify are low-income workers who cannot afford to take time off from work to participate in the lawsuit.

“Along with other victims and separately, these brave Black workers will continue to fight to overcome Tesla’s endless delays and hold the company accountable,” Organ said in a statement.

Marcus Vaughn, a former assembly line worker named as a plaintiff, alleged that black workers at the Fremont, California, factory were subjected to a variety of racist acts, including slurs, graffiti, and nooses hung in the workplace.

The trial was scheduled for next April, two months before another trial on similar allegations against Tesla by the California Department of Civil Rights.

Tesla also faces a racial discrimination lawsuit in federal court in California from the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which enforces federal anti-discrimination laws. The company has also settled other racial discrimination lawsuits with one plaintiff.

President Trump responds to reports that Ted Cruz is laying the groundwork for 2028

0

play

President Donald Trump said he was not surprised to hear that Texas Sen. Ted Cruz may be interested in bidding for the White House in 2028.

President Trump responded to a question from reporters in the Oval Office regarding the Axios report that Cruz was laying the groundwork for a run, saying, “It’s a little early. (There’s) three years and four months left. That’s a long time.” “But he’s a very good person. He’s a very good friend of mine.”

“I’m not really surprised to hear that,” he added. Cruz was one of 16 Republicans Trump opposed in the 2016 Republican primary, before he claimed the nomination and then took the White House.

Axios reported that Cruz is “devoted to a feud with Tucker Carlson and carving out turf in global conflicts as a traditional pro-intervention Republican.” Meanwhile, Vice President J.D. Vance, widely seen as the Republican front-runner in 2028, is an ally of Mr. Carlson and supports Mr. Trump’s “America First” policy on foreign affairs and U.S. engagement.

Trump is prohibited by the constitution from seeking a third term as president, but he has repeatedly expressed a desire to serve beyond 2028, although he has acknowledged that it is legally impossible.

President Trump told reporters on board Air Force One on October 29, “I’m not allowed to run. It’s unfortunate.”

Earlier in the day, when Harris Faulkner, host of Fox News’ “The Faulkner Focus,” asked him to comment on the Axios article, Mr. Cruz shyly responded.

“Reporters are going to write headlines that will get clicks and get attention. I got the job, and it’s a job representing 31 million Texans. And I’ll tell you right now, the wins we’re getting are historic,” Cruz said, without denying the reports.

Cruz then highlighted his contributions to Trump’s signature sweeping tax and spending bill that Congress passed in July.

“That big, beautiful bill you were just talking about, I was lucky enough to write a large part of that bill,” he said.

Legal restrictions on Mr. Trump’s candidacy have not stopped some allies from pushing for a third term.

Steve Bannon, who served as White House chief strategist during Trump’s first administration and now hosts the influential MAGA podcast, told The Economist on October 23: “Trump will be president in 2028, and people should adjust to that.”
