Video of disassembling Jeep Recon goes viral, drawing criticism from company

  • In a currently viral video, an influencer is seen peeling off plastic parts from a Jeep Recon model.
  • The video received millions of views, with the creators criticizing the production quality and price.
  • But Jeep says this is a hand-crafted pre-production model and doesn’t resemble the quality buyers will expect when the off-road EV goes on sale in 2026.

Jeep is calling out influencers who vandalized and mocked the interior of its latest model, the Recon, in a viral video at the Los Angeles Auto Show that opened last week.

In a video that has garnered millions of views across social media platforms, the Los Angeles-based content creators, who go by the name The Middle Lane, open the video by saying, “Oh, I took the Jeep apart. Oh, dear,” as they peel off a plastic panel from the center console of a new Recon.

Throughout the video, the creator criticizes the vehicle’s build quality and says it’s not worth the $65,000 list price. They may point out gaps in interior panels or shake parts of the vehicle. The Recon, an all-electric off-roader, was announced by Jeep on November 18th and made its public debut at the LA Auto Show.

Stellantis has made it clear that the automaker opposes the stunt.

“The actions taken to disassemble the new Jeep Recon on display at the LA Auto Show were destructive and unprofessional,” spokeswoman Kaylene Connelly said in an emailed statement to the Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network.

The company said the prototype model was assembled by hand and not in the same way as the consumer vehicle that will be released in 2026.

“The vehicle in question is a pre-production show car, built exclusively for public exhibitions and events to highlight design inspiration for the final product. These prototype units are typically hand-built and are not intended to demonstrate final production, durability, quality or material integrity,” the statement said.

The video was published across The Middle Lane’s social media channels. The Middle Lane was founded by Luke Miani. He also creates technology-related videos under his own name on YouTube.

Recon’s video has since been removed from YouTube and Instagram, but remains publicly available on TikTok as of late Tuesday, November 25th.

Miani did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Jellyroll, beardless, sharing a nearly unrecognizable selfie

0

Jelly Roll is teasing his new beardless look.

In a new snap shared to his Instagram profile on Nov. 24, the country singer, 40, showed off his new cropped face, just a week after shaving off his trademark beard.

“AI is crazy these days,” he joked in the caption, alongside a photo of himself in a taupe shirt and black overalls. His hair is cut short with bangs and his beard is cropped, in stark contrast to his public image at the time of his rise to fame.

This is just part of Jelly Roll’s recent public transformation. The genre-defying artist has also opened up about her weight loss journey, which has seen her shed hundreds of pounds over the past year.

In a video shared with X by the NFL’s Tennessee Titans in August, Jelly Roll revealed he had “lost 200 pounds.”

“I won’t be able to be on the field,” he joked, but added, “It’ll be soon.”

“I lost 200 pounds. I told my coach if I lost another 50 pounds, I could get a contract,” the singer said to applause.

The revelation follows a series of comments the musician made in April at a show in Pittsburgh, where he told the crowd he was working towards a dream date with his wife.

“I started out at 540 pounds and this morning I’m at 357 pounds, baby,” he said at the time. “I’m going to lose another 100 pounds and go skydiving in Sweden with my wife, baby.”

Tesla plans to double its robotaxi fleet in Austin next month

Tesla Inc TSLA.O Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk said on Tuesday that the number of robotaxis in Austin, Texas, would double in December, following the rollout of self-driving services in the city in June.

“Austin’s Tesla robotaxi fleet should roughly double in the next month,” Musk said in a post on his company X.

It wasn’t immediately clear how many robotaxis Tesla operates.

Tesla’s robotaxi service currently operates in two cities, Austin and the San Francisco Bay Area, but vehicles are still required to have safety monitors. Last week, the company also received permission to operate a ride-hailing service in Arizona.

Musk said in October that he expected robotaxis to operate without safety drivers in much of Austin this year and eight to 10 metropolitan areas by the end of the year.

He said in July that he expected Tesla’s robotaxis to serve about half of the U.S. population by the end of the year.

Tesla Inc., Alphabet Inc.’s Waymo Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. AMZN.O Inc.’s Zoox Inc. are accelerating their expansion as the robotaxis industry rebounds after years of broken promises and shutdowns due to high costs, strict regulations and federal investigations.

Charges against Trump dropped in 2020 Georgia election lawsuit

0

play

On November 26, a judge dismissed the Georgia criminal election fraud case against President Donald Trump and his co-defendants at the request of prosecutors.

Peter Skandalakis, executive director of the Georgia Council of Prosecuting Attorneys, said in a motion filed in Fulton County Superior Court that he believes refusing further prosecution “best serves the interests of justice and promotes judicial finality” in the case.

The decision came after Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who prosecuted Trump and several other co-defendants, was disbarred from the case because of his romantic relationship with another prosecutor.

Willis’ office and the White House did not respond to requests for comment.

The lawsuit alleges that Trump and others participated in a conspiracy to overturn former President Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election, including replacing Georgia’s presidential electors with Trump supporters.

Skandalakis said he appointed himself to handle the case because he was unable to secure another prosecutor to handle the case after Willis’ disqualification as president of the Georgia Prosecuting Attorneys Council.

Prosecutor: “There is no realistic prospect” of Trump going to trial soon

In his statement, Skandalakis did not downplay the seriousness of some of the allegations in the case. If proven, he said, it would establish a conspiracy to “overturn the results of the November 2020 presidential election in Georgia and other states across the country.”

But he said there was “no realistic prospect” that a sitting president would have to stand trial in Georgia, meaning the case against Trump would not be reopened until at least 2029, or about eight years after the underlying conduct took place.

Skandalakis added that he believes the strongest case against those trying to overturn the 2020 presidential election is the federal lawsuit brought against Trump by former special counsel Jack Smith. He said the criminal conduct alleged in the Georgia case “originated in Washington, D.C., not in Georgia.”

Smith dropped the federal lawsuit after Trump won the 2024 election, citing a Justice Department policy barring prosecution of sitting presidents.

Skandalakis also rejected the idea of putting Trump’s co-defendants on trial independently, writing that Trump, as the lead defendant, a presidential candidate and later a sitting president, would be “liable for any conspiracy if proven at trial.”

“In my professional judgment, pursuing this case intensively for another five to 10 years will not benefit the people of Georgia,” Skandalakis wrote.

NFL Week 13 Head-on Opposite Spread Picks: Who Will Win the Best Game?

play

  • One of our tipsters is currently over .500 with nearly 60 games under his belt.
  • The NFL’s Week 13 schedule will see all 32 teams in action, with games played from Thanksgiving Day through Monday.
  • Thanksgiving matchups include a key NFC North game between the Packers and Lions and a featured matchup between the Chiefs and Cowboys.

Are you ready to eat?

The NFL’s Thanksgiving/Week 13 menu is packed with content, with all 32 teams in action, with the only exception being games played almost every day Monday through Saturday, starting with Turkey Day.

Thursday will certainly be must-see TV. It begins with an NFC North showdown between the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions, with the latter currently sitting outside the conference’s scheduled playoff field. Thursday afternoon will feature the Kansas City Chiefs and Dallas Cowboys, perhaps the two most high-profile teams in America, both of whom are in 10th place in their respective conferences and essentially in win-now mode. What about dessert? Rightly or wrongly, QB Joe Burrow is expected to return when the Cincinnati Bengals visit the Baltimore Ravens, who have jumped to the top of the AFC North with a five-game winning streak.

In the annual Black Friday contest, the reigning champion Philadelphia Eagles will host the Chicago Bears, and the 8-3 teams will face off against each other, with the winner taking sole possession of second place overall in the NFC.

It certainly feels like Sunday’s schedule is leftovers. However, Cleveland Browns rookie QB Shedule Sanders will make his first NFL home start (against the San Francisco 49ers). The Houston Texans will be belatedly trying to claw their way back to the top of the AFC South when they take on the Indianapolis Colts. And the Buffalo Bills are scheduled to play the Steelers in Pittsburgh, in what will likely be a sparring match between the two teams for a wild-card spot. Sunday ends with a meeting between the Denver Broncos and Washington Commanders on the outskirts of the nation’s capital.

Monday should rekindle some notable Super Bowl memories as the New York Giants, who have little to offer fans other than the legend of Lombardi, take on the AFC-leading New England Patriots, the league’s only 10-win team entering Week 13.

Trump envoy to visit Russia after leaked phone call with Kremlin

President Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff will visit Moscow next week as momentum builds for a peace deal to end the war in Ukraine.

play

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff will travel to Moscow next week to meet with Russian leaders, the United States and the Kremlin have confirmed, as momentum builds on a peace plan to end the war in Ukraine.

The visit followed a Bloomberg report in which Mr. Witkov leaked details of an Oct. 14 phone call to senior Kremlin officials in which Russian President Vladmir Putin instructed him on how to propose a peace plan to President Trump.

President Trump dismissed criticism about his record while speaking to reporters on Air Force One on November 25 while traveling to the Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, for the Thanksgiving holiday. The president called Witkoff’s conversation “a very standard negotiation format.”

“I’ve never heard of it, but it’s standard,” Trump said. “You know, he has to sell this to Ukraine, so he has to sell Ukraine to Russia. That’s the trader’s job.”

Jared Kusher may accompany Witkoff to Russia

Trump said Witkov would visit Russia next week, and Putin’s foreign policy chief of staff, Yuri Ushakov, later confirmed the visit. Trump also said his son-in-law Jared Kushner, who helped coordinate the Gaza peace deal and attended the Ukraine peace talks in Geneva last week, may also accompany Witkoff.

“As for Witkov, I can say that we have reached a preliminary agreement to come to Moscow next week,” Ushakov said.

Ushakov is the same Russian official whose conversations with Witkov are detailed in records released by Bloomberg.

During the phone conversation, Mr. Witkov advised Mr. Ushakov to ask Mr. Putin to congratulate Mr. Trump on the recently secured Israel-Gaza peace agreement and to propose a 20-point Russia-Ukraine peace agreement modeled on the Gaza deal.

“I agree that he would congratulate him and say that Mr. Trump is a true pacifist. He would say that,” Mr. Ushakov told Mr. Witkov, referring to his boss Mr. Putin.

Witkoff replied, “But here’s what I think is surprising.”

Witkoff added: “Maybe he’ll say to President Trump: Steve and Yuri have talked about a very similar 20-point plan for peace. That might be something we think might move the needle a little bit. We’re open to that kind of thing, to find out what it takes to get a peace deal done.”

In a Nov. 24 post on Truth Social, President Trump said that only a few points of disagreement remain after the release of the 28-point peace plan the United States created to end the Russia-Ukraine war.

“We’re having good talks,” Trump said later on Air Force One. “We started with Russia. We have some talks with Russia. Ukraine is progressing well. I think they are pretty happy with the situation. They want to see this thing over.”

President Trump says Russia-Ukraine talks are aimed at ‘sweeping the border’

President Trump said he hopes to secure an agreement before his next meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. A senior Ukrainian government official said the country and the United States had reached a “common understanding of the core terms” of the deal.

“Wait, it’s still too early to say that,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said when asked by reporters if a peace deal was near, Russian news agency Interfax reported.

The latest move came after Ukrainian, U.S. and European officials met in Geneva on Nov. 23 to discuss a draft plan presented by the U.S. government to end the conflict that began in 2022, when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The current version of the plan has not been made public and must be accepted by Russia. U.S. officials familiar with the discussions declined to discuss the contents of the working draft, citing the sensitivity of the negotiations.

Kiev and its European allies had voiced alarm over an earlier proposal backed by President Trump that would have seen Ukraine cede territory to Russia and cap the size of its military.

“People are starting to realize that this is a good deal for both sides,” Trump said. “They have to stop the war. They are losing a lot of people.”

Asked if a Ukrainian land transfer was still on the table, Trump suggested that both countries would give up land.

“Well, they’re talking about landings in both directions, trying to clear the border,” the president said. “You can’t go through the middle of a house, you can’t go through the middle of a highway. So they’re trying to do something.”

What is the world’s largest city? 2025 United Nations report includes big updates.

0

The United Nations last released its Global Urbanization Prospects report in 2018, when Tokyo was the world’s most populous city.

Jakarta is currently the world’s largest city by population.

Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta, is home to approximately 42 million people, making it the most densely populated urban area in the world, according to the latest United Nations report. Next is Dhaka, Bangladesh, with approximately 37 million people, and Tokyo, Japan, with 33 million people.

In 2018, the last time the United Nations released its Global Urbanization Outlook report, Tokyo was the world’s most populous city, and Jakarta was ranked 33rd.

The authors of the November 2025 report noted that over the past quarter century, Tokyo’s population has grown slower than those of Jakarta and Dhaka, resulting in a decline in its ranking, and this trend is expected to continue in the coming decades.

Jakarta currently holds the top spot, but experts predict that Dhaka will become the largest city by 2050.

The report provides estimates and projections for the world’s population, detailing the rapid increase in urbanization with the decline of rural populations and the creation of megacities with populations exceeding 10 million.

The authors said more than half of the planet’s 8.2 billion people now live in cities, a significant increase from 1950, when just 20% of the world lived in metropolitan areas.

According to the report, Asia leads the world in population growth. Currently, the only non-Asian city in the top 10 is Cairo, Egypt.

OU professor Vahid Abedini released from ICE detention

play

A University of Oklahoma professor who was detained by ICE while boarding a flight to an academic conference in Washington, D.C., has been released after two days of detention for what ICE described as a “standard interrogation.”

Vahid Abedini is the Farzaneh Family Assistant Professor of Iranian Studies at the University of Oklahoma, where he studies international relations and comparative politics. Abedini was taken into custody on Saturday, Nov. 22, and posted on LinkedIn early Tuesday morning that he had been released.

“I am relieved to share that I have been released from custody tonight,” Abedini posted around 2 a.m. Tuesday. “It was a very painful experience, especially seeing people not receive the support I received. I am deeply grateful to my friends and colleagues at the University of Oklahoma, the Middle East Studies Association, and the broader Iranian studies and political science community for helping me resolve this issue.”

An anonymous ICE spokesperson confirmed Abedini’s release in an email.

“The Iranian national was detained for routine interrogation,” the statement said.

Joshua Landis, a professor of Middle East studies at OU, previously told The Oklahoman that Abedini is in the U.S. on an H-1B visa. This type of visa is reserved for individuals employed in professions such as technology, education, and healthcare.

In September, President Donald Trump issued a proclamation requiring employers seeking to bring new workers to the United States on H-1B visas to pay $100,000 for each application. Workers will be denied entry to the United States unless payment is made.

President Donald Trump has allowed the issue of falling prices to be mentioned in his presidential conferences, but polls show voters still don’t approve of him on the economy.

President Trump had an outstanding week ahead of Thanksgiving week, holding an eyebrow-raising meeting with New York Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani. Despite their political differences, the two Queens natives discussed affordability during a friendly meeting Nov. 21.

President Trump is also hoping to regain some economic victories, noting on November 25 that Walmart’s Thanksgiving meal kits are 25% cheaper than last year (albeit with fewer items).

Some voters say the economy is the most important factor in evaluating Mr. Trump. What is President Trump’s approval rating? See recent voting results.

What is President Trump’s approval rating?

President Trump’s approval rating is a net negative, according to an average compiled by RealClearPolitics and the New York Times, and after several months of relative stability, it has fallen over the past month.

According to graphics from RealClearPolitics, President Trump’s approval rating was 50.5% as of January 27th, making him net positive, but by March 13th, his approval rating was 47.8%, and his disapproval rating was 48.5%, making him net negative. The approval rating hit its lowest of 45.1% on April 29, but it declined near the 100th day of the Trump administration. It hit a new low of 42.3% on Nov. 14 as the controversy over Jeffrey Epstein’s emails intensifies following the end of the government shutdown. As of November 25, 43% were in favor and 54.8% were against it.

President Trump’s approval rating fell from 52% in January to 44% in April, then remained roughly flat for several months, according to a New York Times tally. Trump’s lowest approval rating of his term is 41%, which he first reached on November 12, according to the Times. The disapproval rate also rose to 56% on November 19, the highest level this term, according to the aggregation company.

How does President Donald Trump’s approval rating compare to previous presidents?

A Gallup poll conducted from October 1 to 16 found that 41% of people approve of President Trump’s job performance, a slight increase from the previous month.

Trump’s approval ratings in his first October as the 45th and 47th president of the United States were lower than any other modern president during the same period, according to a historical analysis by Gallup. According to Gallup, his October confirmation compares to other presidents’ first year in office.

  • Joe Biden (October 2021) – 42% support
  • President Trump (October 2017) – 37% approve
  • Barack Obama (October 2009) – 53% approve
  • George W. Bush (October 2001) – 88% approved
  • Bill Clinton (October 1993) – 48% support
  • George H.W. Bush (October 1989) – 68% approve
  • Ronald Reagan (October 1981) – 55% approve

CBS News: 60% of Americans say President Trump will make the economy better than it is now.

A CBS News/YouGov poll conducted November 19-21 found President Trump’s approval rating at 40%. The survey included 2,489 U.S. adults and had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.4 percentage points.

According to CBS, when asked how President Trump gives a healthy impression on prices and inflation, 60% said he gives a better impression than they actually are, while 27% said he gives a worse impression than they actually are, while 13% said he gives a worse impression. Respondents were also most likely to say the economy and inflation are the most important things when judging the Trump administration.

Morning consultation: Best policy areas are immigration, national security

A Morning Consult poll conducted November 21-23 found that 45% of respondents approved of President Trump’s job performance, compared to 52% who disapproved. The poll surveyed 2,200 registered U.S. voters and had a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.

When it comes to handling specific issues, President Trump received the worst disapproval on health care and the economy, according to Morning Consult. According to polls, the top issues for President Trump were national security and immigration.

Scroll, click, buy, and get back to work.

Millions of American workers are preparing to jump from their desks to deals on Cyber Monday, one of the busiest days of the holiday season.

More than half of employees (3 in 5 full-time employees) plan to scout Cyber Monday deals during their workday this year, according to a new national survey of 1,000 full-time workers shared exclusively with USA TODAY by CouponFollow.

For employees who switch between tabs, the dopamine rush of deal hunting can temporarily reduce productivity. Seven out of 10 employees say they don’t feel guilty because “everyone is doing it.”

Shoppers at work promote Cyber Monday sales

You can score some deals for a pick-me-up during the holidays, when many people are overwhelmed by the conflicting demands of family and work. Shopping 24 hours a day gives you a sense of accomplishment that you don’t get at work.

According to CouponFollow, these business shoppers plan to spend an average of $214 on Cyber Monday. Men expect to spend more than women.

The convenience and instant gratification of online shopping is likely responsible for the increase in online shopping during work hours. Laptops and cell phones are your gateway to the mall, aside from crowded parking lots and checkout lines.

Cyber Monday week was a blockbuster for retailers as Black Friday holiday shopping spilled over into the following week. According to Salesforce data, U.S. sales in 2024 will be $76 billion, more than four times as much as Black Friday.

“As consumers started engaging in weekday online shopping the week after Thanksgiving, retailers also started following them with special promotions and sales,” said Kirti Kalyanam, executive director of Santa Clara University’s Retail Management Institute.

How much time do workers spend shopping?

Now, retailers are banking on these cubicle deals, filling inboxes and social media feeds with fall Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, and getting shoppers ready to pull the trigger between or even during assignments, meetings, and more.

Retail experts say marketing emails often arrive during work hours. Another common lure? Lunch-limited products will be dropped.

Almost half (45%) of employees admit to shopping during work hours or waiting in line to buy these drop items, Coupon Follow’s survey found.

On average, full-time employees spend 2.4 hours shopping online during their workday each week. This amounts to 16 working days per year spent shopping.

Almost a third (31%) admit to shopping online during a work meeting.

Shopping online while at work can have negative effects. According to CouponFollow, one in four employees say they’ve been caught in the act by a co-worker or manager.

Which states have speed cameras? Beware of the hefty fines.

play

If you are traveling by car during the holidays, pay special attention to the speedometer. That’s because cameras monitor your driving speed on many roads across the country.

This is especially true in Maryland, where you could end up paying more than $400 for that lead leg under the state’s new tiered penalty system that went into effect Oct. 1.

Speed cameras have been installed all over the country, allowing drivers to be fined for speeding, even when a police officer is not around. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, more than 300 communities across the country use cameras to monitor speeders.

The insurance association claims speed cameras are an “important tool” that can help reduce speeding and, in turn, crashes, injuries and fatalities.

Which states have speed cameras?

Hawaii allows the use of speed cameras throughout the state. In Arkansas, Kentucky and Indiana, speed cameras are only used in highway work zones. Some states, including Illinois and Pennsylvania, allow speed cameras in their largest cities (Chicago and Philadelphia) and in highway work zones. Meanwhile, San Francisco is the only city or town in California that has speed cameras, according to the Insurance Institute.

According to the institute, speed cameras are used in the following states:

  • Alabama
  • arizona
  • arkansas
  • California
  • colorado
  • connecticut
  • Delaware
  • District of Columbia
  • florida
  • georgia
  • Hawaii
  • illinois
  • Indiana
  • iowa
  • kentucky
  • louisiana
  • maryland
  • minnesota
  • new mexico
  • new york
  • ohio
  • Oregon
  • pennsylvania
  • rhode island
  • tennessee
  • virginia
  • washington

How much does the ticket cost?

Fines may vary by state. It may also depend on the severity of the violation. However, many states do not issue demerit points on driver’s licenses. That’s because the notification is sent to the registered owner of the vehicle (which may not be the driver who was caught speeding).

In Maryland, fines are structured as follows:

  • If you go 12 to 15 miles per hour over the speed limit, the fine is $40.
  • If you go 16 to 19 miles per hour over the speed limit, you will be fined $70.
  • If you go 20 to 49 miles per hour over the speed limit, you will be fined $120.
  • If you go 30 to 39 miles per hour over the speed limit, you will be fined $230.
  • Exceeding the speed limit by more than 40 mph: $425 fine.

In Philadelphia, the fine for going 11 to 19 miles per hour over the speed limit is $100. If you go 20-49 mph over the speed limit, it’s $125. $150 for speeds over 30 mph.

Fines in San Francisco range from $50 (11-15 mph over the speed limit) up to $500 (160 mph over the speed limit). The fine in Kentucky is up to $500, according to the USA TODAY Network’s Louisville Courier-Journal.

Are there speed trap warnings?

Laws regarding warnings and signs advising drivers about speed cameras vary by state. A 2021 report commissioned by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, National Safety Council, AAA, Highway and Auto Safety Advocates, and the Governor’s Highway Safety Association recommends a series of steps to engage communities and increase public awareness, including “installing high-visibility warning signs.”

Do speed cameras make roads safer?

Less speeding means safer roads, and safety experts generally say speed cameras could be part of the solution.

“Transportation agencies and law enforcement agencies looking to reduce fatalities are pointing to improved speed enforcement as a promising approach to doing so,” said Rock Miller, a California-based traffic engineering and pedestrian and bicycle safety expert.

Mr Miller said he believes speed cameras can make a difference, especially for drivers who speed and face higher fines.

“Numerous studies show that cameras reduce speeds and cause crashes on all types of roads,” notes the Insurance Institute.

Roosevelt Boulevard in Philadelphia is the city’s most dangerous road for pedestrians. In 2020, the city installed cameras at 10 locations along Main Street. The city says speeding tickets have decreased by 93% and crashes with serious injuries or fatalities have decreased by 21%. Crashes involving pedestrians have decreased by 50%. By 2023, the city has expanded the cameras further down Roosevelt Boulevard. In November, the city of Philadelphia installed speed cameras on a section of Broad Street, a major north-south thoroughfare through the city.

“There is evidence that even relatively small reductions in speed can lead to large reductions in deaths,” Miller said. “Even a few miles per hour can make a difference.”

The cornerstone of manufacturing: AI as a strategic driver

0

Manufacturers are currently dealing with rising input costs, labor shortages, supply chain vulnerabilities, and pressure to offer more customized products. AI is becoming an important part of responding to these pressures.

When corporate strategy depends on AI

Most manufacturers are trying to reduce costs while increasing throughput and quality. AI supports these objectives by predicting equipment failures, adjusting production schedules, and analyzing supply chain signals. A Google Cloud study found that more than half of manufacturing executives use AI agents in back-office areas such as planning and quality. (https://cloud.google.com/transform/roi-ai-the-next-wave-of-ai-in-manufacturing)

This shift is important because the use of AI is directly tied to measurable business outcomes. Reducing downtime, reducing scrap, increasing overall equipment efficiency (OEE), and increasing customer responsiveness all contribute to a positive corporate strategy and overall competitiveness in the marketplace.

What recent industry experience has revealed

  1. Motherson Technology Services reported significant results: 25-30% reduction in maintenance costs, 35-45% reduction in downtime, and 20-35% increase in production efficiency by implementing agent-based AI, data platform integration, and workforce enablement initiatives.

  2. At ServiceNow, we discussed how manufacturers can unify workflow, data, and AI on a common platform. Just over half of advanced manufacturers reported having formal data governance programs in place to support their AI initiatives.

These instances indicate the direction of travel. AI is being deployed within operations (in workflows, not pilots).

What cloud and IT leaders should consider

data architecture

Manufacturing systems rely on low-latency decision-making, especially regarding maintenance and quality. Leaders need to figure out how to combine edge devices (often OT systems that support IT infrastructure) with cloud services. Microsoft’s maturity path guidance highlights that data silos and legacy equipment remain a barrier, and standardizing how data is collected, stored, and shared is often the first step for forward-looking manufacturing and engineering businesses.

Use case ordering

ServiceNow recommends starting your AI deployment small and expanding gradually. Focusing on two or three high-value use cases can help teams avoid the “pilot trap.” Predictive maintenance, energy optimization, and quality inspection are strong starting points because the benefits can be measured relatively easily.

Governance and security

Connecting operational technology equipment to IT and cloud systems increases cyber risk because some OT systems are not designed to be exposed to the broader internet. Leaders must carefully define data access rules and monitoring requirements. In general, AI governance does not need to wait until later phases and should start from the first pilot.

workforce and skills

The human factor remains important. Systems that utilize AI need to be trusted by operators, but systems that utilize AI also need to be reliable. According to Automation.com, the manufacturing industry faces an ongoing shortage of skilled workers, making upskilling programs an essential part of modern implementation.

Vendor and ecosystem neutrality

The ecosystem in many manufacturing environments includes IoT sensors, industrial networks, cloud platforms, and workflow tools that operate in the back office or facility floor. Leaders must prioritize interoperability and avoid lock-in to specific providers. The goal is not to adopt a single-vendor approach, but rather to build an architecture that supports long-term flexibility to suit each organization’s workflow.

Measuring impact

Manufacturers need to define metrics such as downtime hours, reduced maintenance costs, throughput, and yield, and these metrics need to be continuously monitored. Motherson’s results provide a realistic benchmark and illustrate possible outcomes from careful measurements.

Reality: Beyond the Hype

Despite rapid progress, challenges remain. Skills shortages slow adoption, traditional machinery produces fragmented data, and costs can be difficult to predict. Sensors, connectivity, integration work, and data platform upgrades all add up. Additionally, as production systems become more connected, security concerns also increase. Finally, AI must coexist with human expertise. Behind-the-scenes operators, engineers, and data scientists need to work collaboratively rather than in parallel.

However, recent publications have shown that these challenges can be managed with appropriate management and operational structures. Clear governance, cross-functional teams, and a scalable architecture make AI easy to deploy and maintain.

Strategic recommendations for leaders

  1. Connect your AI efforts to your business goals. Connect work to KPIs such as downtime, scrap, and cost per unit.
  2. Employ a prudent hybrid edge and cloud combination. Keep real-time inference close to the machine while using cloud platforms for training and analysis.
  3. Invest in people. A mixed team of domain experts and data scientists is important and should provide training to operators and administrators.
  4. Build in security early. Treat OT and IT as an integrated environment with zero trust in mind.
  5. Scale gradually. Prove your value with one plant and then expand.
  6. Choose open ecosystem components. Open standards allow companies to remain flexible and avoid vendor lock-in.
  7. Monitor performance. Adjust models and workflows in response to changing conditions according to results measured against predefined metrics.

conclusion

Implementing in-house AI is now a key part of manufacturing strategies. Recent blog posts from Motherson, Microsoft, and ServiceNow show that manufacturers are reaping measurable benefits by combining data, people, workflows, and technology. The path will not be easy, but with clear governance, the right architecture, security considerations, business-centric projects, and a strong focus on talent, AI can be a practical means of gaining competitive advantage.

A blind woman, her “dream job” and the cost of a government shutdown

0

The historic funding crisis has hurt Americans across the country. Christine Glassman has not yet fully recovered.

FALLS CHURCH, Va. – It all started right before dragon boat practice.

Kristin Glassman and her husband Gary have an important race ahead of them. In less than a week, the couple will be heading to Florida for the national championships.

Like the blind Glassman family, dragon boating is often misunderstood. It is often confused with rowing, but it is not the same. Dragon boat riders use paddles and face forward. The rower uses the oar and faces backwards.

This little-known sport is also popular among people with disabilities. Christine and Gary call themselves “paradragons.” The two were “bitten by the dragon” just before the coronavirus pandemic. Almost six years later, at age 56, Christine became the president of the Out of Sight Dragons team.

On the morning of Oct. 11, as Christine and Gary were preparing for their final training session before nationals, Christine received a text message on her cell phone. Her boss at the U.S. Department of Education relayed a message saying the team had received a “force reduction” notice. That’s what we call layoffs in Washington. She instructed Christine to check her email.

She did. She let slip “a few choice phrases.” Her last day will be December 9th.

Federal officials say visually impaired people were left stranded during shutdown

Kristin Glassman’s life was forever changed by the longest government shutdown in history.

america today

Christine was distraught. She wasn’t alone either. President Donald Trump’s administration laid off more than 4,000 federal workers over the weekend, just 10 days into what would eventually become the longest government shutdown in U.S. history.

In the past, such ordeals have led to furloughs, which were harmful but temporary and ended with federal employees receiving pay for their forced time out of office. That’s what happened during President Trump’s first term, when the government was shut down for 35 days, setting a record at the time.

In the Trump administration’s second term, the administration’s decision to lay off employees during another historic government shutdown became one of the defining issues of the funding crisis.

The havoc endured by people like Christine highlighted how harmful Washington’s traffic gridlock can be for many Americans, including public servants. This uproar, in turn, has affected some people with disabilities, who are employed at slightly higher rates in the federal government than in the private sector. Federal law has historically required agencies to develop plans to achieve specific employment goals for persons with disabilities.

Claire Stanley, director of advocacy and government affairs for the American Federation of the Blind, said Christine was not the only blind or partially sighted federal employee she knew who was initially laid off during the shutdown. Many others were not fired but went for weeks without pay.

“It felt like we were all holding our breath,” she said.

Kristin told USA TODAY this story in her personal capacity as an advocate for other blind people, president of the Fairfax Chapter of the American Federation of the Blind in Virginia, and a member of AFGE Local 252, the Department of Education employees union. She said her opinions do not represent the agency.

From “dream job” to nightmare

On October 29, four weeks into the government shutdown, Christine sat in her apartment with her palms flat on her dining room table. Pixie, a Norwegian forest cat, lounged on a nearby couch, her sandy brown fur complementing the dark maroon upholstery.

She was on higher doses of anti-anxiety medication for various reasons. Worries about caring for her elderly parents are always pushed to the back of her mind. Those concerns have come to the fore since she was fired.

Her mother has Alzheimer’s disease. Her father has been a firefighter for many years and has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. They still live in Christine’s hometown of Long Island, New York.

Nightmares were making it difficult to sleep. Her stomach hurt frequently.

Despite all these concerns, the past 24 hours have brought some hope. On October 28, a federal judge in California temporarily halted her termination, along with thousands of others. But with most federal agencies still largely closed, she had not yet returned to work.

The news offered only limited comfort. It did little to allay her concerns about the long-term future of the federal law she has helped implement since 2019. Although housed in the Ministry of Education, it was not actually about education at all.

The main purpose of the Randolph Shepherd Program, as it is known, is to provide employment opportunities to visually impaired business owners. Under the law, visually impaired entrepreneurs will be given priority when competing for contracts to manage food service operations in federal buildings.

In fiscal year 2023, the program generated about $750 million in revenue for about 1,500 vendors, according to federal data. Christine’s job as a program specialist is to mediate disputes and help blind entrepreneurs get the positions they deserve. Her own husband was also once a beneficiary of this program.

“She has landed her dream job,” said Rachel Gittleman, the Education Department union president.

Things changed in mid-October when the staff responsible for the program at the federal level were laid off. Asked on NBC’s “Meet the Press” about the widespread layoffs that came at the same time, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) said he was not happy about the situation.

“It’s an unfortunate situation that the president doesn’t want to see,” he said, as the White House considers layoffs.

In a statement on November 6, the Ministry of Education insisted that layoffs like Christine’s had been blocked by the courts and would not affect the ministry’s operations.

breaking point

A week and a half after receiving the court’s injunction, Christine’s job future remained uncertain. The atmosphere on Capitol Hill was beginning to shift, suggesting a resolution may be within reach.

Across the country, the effects of Washington’s month-long standoff were becoming increasingly apparent to ordinary Americans in important ways. A wide range of flights experienced cancellations and delays. Preschool programs serving thousands of children have been shut down. Millions of people on federal aid programs were struggling to put food on the table.

Senate Democrats, who had withheld a yes vote to reopen the government because of health care costs, had reached breaking point. Finally, on November 9, the administration struck a deal with Republicans in Congress and the White House to turn the lights back on.

This agreement quickly pitted the Democratic Party against each other. Many accused their colleagues of capitulating without any substantive commitments from the other side to avoid impending health insurance premium hikes for millions of people.

But the compromise included important provisions for people like Christine. That meant all layoffs related to the closure would be rescinded. Additionally, the White House will be prohibited from further firing federal employees until at least January 30, 2026.

The next night, the Senate sent the government reopening bill to the House. Tim Kaine, a Democratic senator and 2016 vice presidential candidate who, like Christine, represents thousands of federal workers in Virginia, sided with Republicans across party lines.

“We protected them,” he told USA TODAY shortly after voting. “They all have families and people to rely on and it feels very, very good.”

Sen. John Fetterman, who also left the party to try to reopen the government, expressed a similar opinion. The Pennsylvania Democrat, who himself has an auditory processing disorder, said moving to rehire people like Christine was “the right thing to do.”

“I needed to end this,” he told USA TODAY.

I felt relieved but not happy.

On Wednesday, November 12, the closure officially ended. Christine returned to work later that week.

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), who has proven to be an ardent advocate for federal employees during the government shutdown, told USA TODAY that while he was not familiar with Christine’s specific situation, he still expected people like her to be happy to get their jobs back.

Asked about Mr Johnson’s proposal, she said she was “relieved”. “But I’m not happy.”

Her future at work is far from clear. Education Secretary Linda McMahon has just taken another big step in that direction, vowing to eliminate as many schools as legally possible. On Nov. 18, she announced the outsourcing of key programs, including those for low-income and rural schools, to four other agencies.

Although Christine’s division was not included in the reorganization, there is widespread speculation that such changes are in the works. (Department of Education officials said they are still considering the future of the special education division, where Christine’s office is located.) An agency spokesperson did not respond to multiple requests for comment from USA TODAY on the reversal of layoffs since the shutdown ended. But court documents show the administration is fully complying with the judge’s order to reinstate people like Christine.

Dragon boat season is over. Once the Glassman family has their finances in place after the shutdown, they are considering planning a trip to a warmer location to get back on their feet. Exercise is just as much a stress reliever for them as it is for everyone else.

“You can get a lot of anger out with a paddle,” Christine said.

The sport will officially resume in May. Until then, they hope their winter training will help them cope with whatever life throws at them.

  • The holiday season has officially begun at the White House with the arrival of the Christmas tree and the presidential pardon of the turkey.
  • President Trump and the first lady will spend Thanksgiving at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida.

The White House Christmas tree has arrived. Two lucky turkeys were pardoned by the president just before Thanksgiving. It’s the first official holiday season of President Donald Trump’s second term.

According to President Trump’s schedule, he will be heading to Palm Beach, Florida, for Thanksgiving with the first lady. On his days off, he plans to participate in calls with military personnel.

Trump has visited Mar-a-Lago frequently on weekends since mid-October. President Trump also visited Mar-a-Lago during his first Christmas, with the exception of the 2018 holiday when the government was shut down.

President Melania Trump is scheduled to reveal the White House’s Christmas design and decorations to the media on December 1st, but what will Christmas at Mar-a-Lago look like? Please take a look:

Mar-a-Lago on vacation: see photos

First Lady Melania Trump sparks controversy during vacation during first term

Christmas at the White House caused controversy for the first lady of President Donald Trump’s first term.

First up is the 2018 red Christmas tree.

And Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, author of the book Melania and Me, secretly recorded a conversation with Melania Trump in which she complained about her role promoting the White House on Christmas, while being criticized for not doing more meaningful work, CNN reported in 2020.

“I’m (expletive) about Christmas. Who’s going to (expletive) about Christmas and decorating? But I have to do it, right?” the first lady said in the recording. “And I say I’m doing it, working for Christmas, planning for Christmas… and they say, ‘What happens to the kids who are separated?’ Give me a break. ”
