The suspect in the DC shooting has been identified as Rahmanullah Rakamal. what we know.

Two National Guard members were left in critical condition in the Nov. 26 attack, FBI Director Kash Patel said.

Authorities have detained an Afghan national in connection with the ambush shooting of two West Virginia National Guard soldiers near the White House in Washington, D.C.

Rahmanullah Rakanwar (known as Rakamal by the Department of Homeland Security) is being investigated as a possible terrorist suspect, according to a Department of Homeland Security news release.

FBI Director Kash Patel said the Nov. 26 attack a short distance from the White House left two National Guard members in critical condition.

The suspect was shot and hospitalized shortly after the attack. Metropolitan Police Chief of Staff Geoffrey Carroll described him as a “lone gunman”. Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser called the attack a “targeted shooting.”

Rahmanullah Rakanwal entered the United States in 2021, officials say

President Donald Trump said in a speech in Palm Beach, Florida, that the Department of Homeland Security believes the suspect entered the United States in 2021.

Lakhanwal came to the United States in 2021 under a special visa program for Afghans who supported the United States during the Afghanistan war and were vulnerable to retaliation from the ruling Taliban after the U.S. withdrawal, officials told Reuters. However, Lakhanwal has overstayed his visa and is in the country illegally, officials said.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in a post on X that the suspect entered the country on September 8, 2021 under “Operation Welcome Allies.”

The attack occurred outside a subway station in the center of the capital, and the White House and other government buildings were placed on lockdown after gunfire. President Trump said in a social media post that the suspect was an “animal” and would pay a “huge price.”

Here’s what we know so far about the suspect in the Washington DC shootings.

What we know about the suspect in the DC shooting

The suspect was apprehended by other troopers in the area, Carroll said.

“They heard the gunshots and were actually able to intervene and after the suspect was shot to the ground, they were able to kind of detain the suspect until law enforcement arrived on the scene,” Carroll said.

The suspect was shot during the interaction and was taken to a local hospital for treatment, police said.

“There are no other suspects at this time,” Carroll said.

The Department of Homeland Security said in a news release that Lakhanwal entered the country on September 8, 2021 through Operation Welcome Allies. The program is designed to allow Afghans and their families who supported U.S. troops into the country to enter the country, who could be subject to retaliation by the Taliban after the U.S. withdraws.

Patel said at a news conference that the FBI is working with Washington, D.C. police, the Department of Homeland Security and other law enforcement agencies in the investigation.

“We brought together the full force of federal, state and local law enforcement,” he said.

President Trump says US needs to re-investigate ‘foreign nationals’ from Afghanistan

President Trump called Afghanistan a “hellhole on Earth” and said the suspect was “brought in on a plane by the Biden administration in September 2021.”

President Trump has repeatedly used anti-immigrant rhetoric and reiterated that the suspect in the shooting will pay “the harshest price possible.” He also slammed Biden, calling him “the most disastrous president in our country’s history.”

President Trump criticized the previous administration, saying the United States “needs to re-examine all foreign nationals who enter our country from Afghanistan under the Biden administration.” Trump added that his administration must take “all necessary steps” to remove immigrants from “countries that don’t belong here or that have an interest in our country.”

“If they don’t love our country, we don’t want them,” Trump said.

Following President Trump’s statement, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced that it would suspend all immigration applications from Afghan nationals.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said the Trump administration is deploying an additional 500 National Guard troops to Washington, D.C. There are currently about 2,200 National Guard troops stationed in Washington, D.C.

How updates to the MCP specification improve security as your infrastructure grows

0

The latest MCP specification update hardens enterprise infrastructure with enhanced security and moves AI agents from pilot to production.

To mark its first year, the open source project created by Anthropic released a revised specification this week aimed at solving operational pain points that keep generative AI agents in pilot mode. This update adds support for long-running workflows and tighter security controls with help from Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft, and Google Cloud.

The market is moving away from weak, bespoke integrations. For enterprises, this is an opportunity to deploy agent AI that can read and write corporate data stores without incurring significant technical debt.

MCP progresses from “developer curiosity” to practical infrastructure

The story has moved from experimental chatbots to structural integration. Since September, the registry has grown 407% and now houses nearly 2,000 servers.

“One year after Anthropic introduced Model Context Protocol, MCP has gone from a developer curiosity to a practical way to connect AI to the systems where the work and data reside,” said Satyajith Mundakkal, Global CTO at Hexaware, following this latest specification update.

Microsoft is already “signaling the transition by adding native MCP support to Windows 11,” effectively moving the standard directly into the operating system layer.

This software standardization will occur in parallel with aggressive hardware scale-up. Mundakkal emphasizes “building unprecedented infrastructure,” citing OpenAI’s multi-gigawatt “Stargate” program as an example. “These are clear signs that AI capabilities and the data they rely on are rapidly expanding,” he says.

MCP is the plumbing that supplies these large-scale computing resources. Mundakkal said: “The value of AI is determined by the data that can be safely reached.”

Until now, hooking LLM to a database has been mostly synchronous. This works if your chatbot checks the weather, but fails if you want to migrate a codebase or analyze medical records.

The new “Tasks” feature changes this (SEP-1686). This provides a standard way for the server to track work, and allows clients to poll for status and cancel jobs if things go wrong. Operations teams that automate infrastructure migrations need agents that can run for hours without timing out. Supporting states like work or Input_required Finally, we bring resiliency to agent workflows.

MCP specification updates improve security

For CISOs in particular, AI agents often look like a large, uncontrolled attack surface. The risks are already visible. “Security researchers have even found that approximately 1,800 MCP servers will be exposed on the public internet by mid-2025,” suggesting that the deployment of private infrastructure is expanding significantly.

“If done poorly, (MCP) integration can lead to sprawl and expand the attack surface,” Mundakkar warns.

To address this, the maintainers addressed the issue of Dynamic Client Registration (DCR). This fix is URL-based client registration (SEP-991). This eliminates administrative bottlenecks by allowing clients to provide unique IDs that point to self-managed metadata documents.

Next, there is “URL mode navigation” (SEP-1036). This allows, for example, a server processing a payment to bounce the user to a secure browser window to obtain credentials. Agents never see your password. Just get the token. This keeps core credentials isolated and non-negotiable for PCI compliance.

Harish Peri, SVP at Okta, believes this will provide “the oversight and access controls needed to build a secure and open AI ecosystem.”

One of the features as part of the MCP Infrastructure specification update, “Sampling with Tools” (SEP-1577), was not well known. Servers used to be passive data fetchers. You can now run your own loops using client tokens. Imagine a “research server” that spawns subagents that examine documents and create reports. No custom client code required. It just brings the inference closer to the data.

However, wiring these connections is only step one. Mayur Upadhyaya, CEO of APIContext, asserts, “The first year of MCP implementation showed that enterprise AI doesn’t start with a rewrite, it starts with a publish.”

But the next hurdle is visibility. “The next wave is about visibility. Enterprises need to monitor MCP uptime and validate authentication flows as rigorously as they monitor APIs today,” explains Upadhyaya.

The MCP roadmap reflects this, with updates aimed at making debugging more “reliable and observable.” Trouble arises when you treat your MCP server as a “set it and forget it” thing. Mundakkal agreed, noting that the first year’s takeaway was to “combine MCP with strong identity, RBAC, and observability from day one.”

Star-studded industry lineup adopting MCP for infrastructure

The protocol depends on who is using it. In the year since the original specification was released, MCP has reached nearly 2,000 servers. Microsoft uses it to bridge GitHub, Azure, and M365. AWS is baking it into Bedrock. Google Cloud supports this throughout Gemini.

This reduces vendor lock-in. Postgres connectors built for MCP should theoretically work across Gemini, ChatGPT, or internal Anthropic agents without rewriting.

The “plumbing” phase of generative AI is settling down, and open standards are winning the connectivity debate. Technology leaders should audit internal APIs for MCP readiness, focus on publishing rather than rewriting, and ensure new URL-based registrations align with current IAM frameworks.

Monitoring protocols should also be established immediately. The latest MCP specification updates are backward compatible with existing infrastructure. This new feature is the only way to engage agents in regulated mission-related workflows and ensure security.

Housing prices are rising slowly. No one is happy.

0

play

Home price growth across the country has slowed, and it’s probably not a happy situation for buyers sitting on the sidelines in a market that remains unaffordable, or for owners who just a few years ago saw their neighbors selling for big bucks.

Pricing changes vary by different data providers. Cotality, a real estate data analytics provider, predicts the national average growth rate from September 2024 to September 2025 will be 1.2%, lower than earlier this year. National brokerage firm Redfin calculates annual profit for September at 3.1%.

And the Federal Housing Finance Agency, which regulates mortgage guarantee companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, announced on Nov. 25 that prices rose 3.26% between the third quarter of 2025 and the same period last year.

There is even more agreement about how difficult it is for many Americans to afford to shop.

According to an October ICE Mortgage Monitor report, “As of mid-September, with a 30-year interest rate of 6.26%, monthly principal and interest payments on an average-priced home required $2,148, or 30% of median household income.” This is lower than in the summer, but still 5.4 percentage points above the long-term average.

And a recent report from Realtor.com explains that the “K-shaped economy” phenomenon of growth in high-income markets and decline in lower-income markets has arrived in the housing market.

Through the first seven months of this year, sales of homes priced over $750,000 increased by 5.8% compared to the same period in 2024, while sales under $750,000 decreased by 3%, according to the report. “In other words, more expensive housing is driving a larger share of market activity, while the more affordable housing segment continues to shrink.”

The “top” of the market may be over

Meanwhile, homeowners looking to sell must contend with the reality that they may be missing out on the “top” of the market these days. Although most real estate agents and other professionals advise that you should buy or sell a home based on real-world needs rather than market timing, some owners may find it frustrating to learn that they could have fetched a higher price just a short while ago.

“I think homeowners who see their neighbors selling on weekends for 5, 10, 20 percent above asking price and having 40 showings a day and want that themselves are holding up. But we’re not going to see that again,” Maura Neal, a real estate agent with RE/MAX Around Atlanta, told USA TODAY in early November.

Some recently released Redfin data backs that up. “The number of residential properties taken off the market rose to a historic high in September,” the firm’s analysts wrote. “So many properties are becoming obsolete that sellers are delisting them. Many homeowners would rather maintain their status quo than accept a lower offer.”

As a result, one real estate agent told USA TODAY, it has become an “empty market.”

Please pay in cash on Small Business Saturdays. Texas restaurants will definitely thank you.

0

play

Small Business Saturday is just around the corner, and some businesses are telling shoppers that cash is the best gift.

The Texas Restaurant Association (TRA), which represents the state’s largest private employers, said paying in cash allows businesses to offset credit card processing fees that eat into razor-thin margins. Credit card fees now average 2.35% of sales, totaling at least $187 billion nationwide, and a $100 ticket can eat up more than half of a restaurant’s profits.

Rather than pass costs on to customers through credit card surcharges, as many businesses across the country do, TRA said it wants to keep costs down for members and their customers. So this year, ditch the plastic and pay with cash.

“Additional fees are an option, but most restaurants are trying to avoid adding new fees at a time when families are already feeling significant financial pressure,” TRA said in an email to USA TODAY.

Why is this so important now?

Companies have been absorbing credit card fees for decades, but have struggled due to years of rising inflation, labor shortages and rising tariffs and cannot continue to absorb rising credit card fees, the TRA said. For many companies, this holiday season may be a last stand before a traditionally weak first quarter and an uncertain 2026, the magazine said.

“This is not just a Texas issue,” he said. “When more customers pay with cash or debit cards, everyone saves money and small businesses can stabilize prices and stay competitive during the tough holiday season.”

Last year, Americans paid between $187.2 billion and $236.4 billion in credit card processing fees, or about $1,200 per year per family, according to the nonprofit Merchants Payments Coalition. Credit card processing fees are charged on both the price of the product or service and any taxes or gratuities added to your bill.

Last year, Illinois became the first state to pass a major processing fee bill that excluded taxes and tips from credit card processing fees, but legal issues have stalled implementation. Critics say Illinois lawmakers have overstepped their authority and that the law will create “credit card chaos.”

Is cash the answer?

Payment companies claim the opposite is true, credit cards save money and cash is expensive.

“Without electronic payments, hidden cash costs will drive up spending for small businesses,” said Richard Hunt, executive chairman of the Electronic Payments Coalition, a lobbying group representing banks, credit unions and payment card networks.

When Americans shop with credit cards, they save time and earn valuable perks like cash back, while helping local stores operate more efficiently and keep prices down, Hunt said.

Data from research and advisory firm IHL Group shows that businesses are spending more on processing cash transactions. Handling cash can cost retailers 4.7% to 15.3% of the transaction amount, compared to $1.43 to $4.40 per $100 transaction, depending on the credit/debit or payment processor.

An EPC spokesperson said: “The fact is that credit cards are the safest and most efficient payment method for consumers and a guaranteed way for businesses to collect payment.”

What is the real answer?

Merchants say the long-term solution is competition among payment processors.

Visa and Mastercard, which process more than 80% of credit card transactions, “set the rules and prices for nearly all credit card transactions, and those costs are ultimately built into the price of everything consumers buy, even if they never use a credit card,” the TRA said. “If true competition is impossible, we need stronger regulatory safeguards, similar to those that oversee utility markets to ensure fair pricing in the absence of competition. We need real market forces or meaningful consumer protections, because businesses and families are forced to pay the price right now.”

But credit card processors say nothing stays the same in the payments industry.

Mastercard previously noted that payment options continue to grow, including “buy now, pay later,” person-to-person and account-to-account services, real-time payment platforms (including those from the Federal Reserve), digital currencies, wallet providers, and open banking companies.

Visa and Mastercard also recently presented merchants with a $200 billion offer to lower the credit card interchange fees charged to merchants for processing credit cards and end a 20-year lawsuit. Fees will drop by an average of 0.1 percentage points over five years, and standard credit card fees will drop to 1.25% over eight years. Merchants have additional fee flexibility, and merchants who accept one of the network’s credit cards no longer have to accept all credit cards. The court still needs to approve the settlement.

However, merchants are balking at this proposal. “Even the marginal reductions proposed in the bank fee settlement could allow Visa and Mastercard to raise their own fees without limit,” said Jennifer Hatcher, chief public policy officer at the Food Industry Association.

Businesses need to reduce “structural costs that have increased to such an extent that they threaten the survival of small and medium-sized enterprises,” the TRA said. “Research shows that some consumers are spending more with credit cards, but the benefits are increasingly outweighed by the unpredictable rise in fees that come with each transaction.”

Motive for violent attack unknown

The motive for the fatal shooting of two West Virginia National Guard soldiers in the nation’s capital remains unclear as federal authorities accuse Afghans of ambushing troops in a “targeted” attack.

National Guard troops were on a “high-security patrol” near the White House on Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 26, when a suspect came around a corner and opened fire, according to Deputy Metropolitan Police Chief Jeff Carroll. After a “back-and-forth exchange,” other units subdued the gunman and took him into custody, Carroll said.

FBI Director Kash Patel said the two injured Guard members were in critical condition at a local hospital. They have not been publicly identified.

West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrissey called the attack “an act of unspeakable violence.”

Officials said the gunman appeared to have acted alone. President Donald Trump and Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem confirmed that the suspect entered the United States from Afghanistan in 2021 under a Biden administration-era program.

President Trump ordered an additional 500 National Guard troops to be sent to Washington. Thousands of troops are already deployed to the nation’s capital as part of the president’s immigration and crime crackdown targeting Democratic-led cities. )

Army Secretary Dan Driscoll said he visited two West Virginia National Guard soldiers who remain hospitalized after being shot in a targeted attack by authorities.

“Today I visited a wounded National Guard member in the hospital,” Driscoll wrote in a post on X on Wednesday, Nov. 26. “My heart breaks for them, their families, and those affected by this horrific attack in our nation’s capital.”

Neither victim has been identified. Driscroll did not provide any information about their condition.

“Everyone in the National Guard made a courageous decision to serve their communities and nation,” he wrote. “They work selflessly to protect our way of life. Please keep our Guard members in your prayers.”

–Michael Collins

Speaking on November 26 in Palm Beach, Florida, where he is spending the Thanksgiving holiday, President Trump said the Department of Homeland Security is “confident” that the suspect in custody in connection with the shooting entered the United States from Afghanistan. He claimed the shooting was a “heinous assault” and an “act of terrorism.”

The president has repeatedly used anti-immigrant rhetoric and reiterated that the suspect in the shooting will pay “the harshest price possible.” He called Afghanistan a “hellhole on Earth” and said the suspects were “airlifted in by the Biden administration in September 2021.”

President Trump claimed that the Biden administration had allowed “20 million unidentified and unvetted foreign nationals” into the country, and said the United States “must re-examine every foreign national who entered our country from Afghanistan under the Biden administration.”

Following his speech, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced that it was “indefinitely suspending the processing of immigration applications for Afghan nationals pending further review of our security and vetting procedures.”

The suspect’s identity has not been released by law enforcement officials. Investigators have identified the suspect as Rahmanullah Rakanwar, 29, an Afghan from Washington state, Reuters reported, citing unnamed officials.

Lakhanwal entered the United States under a special visa program for Afghans who supported the United States during the Afghanistan war and are vulnerable to retaliation from the ruling Taliban after the U.S. withdrawal, officials told Reuters. However, Lakhanwal has overstayed his visa and is in the country illegally, officials said.

In a post on X, Noem said the suspect came to the United States from Afghanistan in September 2021 under a Biden administration program called “Operation Welcoming Allies.”

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced in the wake of the shooting that it would suspend all immigration applications from Afghan nationals.

“Effective immediately, the processing of all immigration applications involving Afghan nationals will be suspended indefinitely pending further review of our security and vetting procedures,” the agency said in a Nov. 26 post on X.

Stranger Things Season 5 Episode 3 Recap “Turnbow’s Trap”

0

play

Spoiler alert! Below you’ll find details about Stranger Things Season 5, Episode 3, “Turnbow’s Trap.”

These kids are doing it the old-fashioned way.

We’re talking barbed wire, a flaming Demogorgon, novelty weapons, telepathic interrogations, fleeting references to classic 1980s films, and an elaborate plan that goes awry at key moments. Yes, “Stranger Things” is finally gearing up for its final season, and it only took three episodes.

It’s been three long years since “The Stranger” Season 4, so it’s understandable that Season 5 started with so much preparation and exposition. But in the third episode, when the main characters finally start doing more and sitting around less, it’s a huge relief. And things get really exciting at the end of the episode with the big reveal that a comatose redhead is actually alive and well (at least in some kind of parallel dimension).

There’s only one episode left after “The Turnbow Trap,” and no new “Stranger” content will appear until Christmas Day. But we are clearly nearing the climax and ending.

Both sides of Upside Down

Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and Hopper (David Harbour) hit a literal wall while tracking down the Demogorgon that kidnapped young Holly Wheeler (Nell Fisher). And it’s an absolutely hideous wall of self-healing flesh that neither of them can break through, no matter how hard they try. While trying to rebuild the organization, they suddenly find themselves in big trouble when the soldiers chasing Elle appear with a kind of satellite (the “hedgehog”) that acts like her kryptonite, paralyzing her instantly.

As she writhes in pain, the soldiers notice where she and Hopper are hiding and attack. When her surrogate father takes out a satellite dish, Elle is quickly able to scare away the grunts. The two capture a particularly punchable-looking operative, interrogate him using Elle’s telepathic abilities, and discover that Dr. Kay’s (Linda Hamilton) military base on the Upside Down is hiding something in a heavily guarded vault. Eleven is convinced it’s someone with powers like her, someone like our big bad Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower).

Whether his physical body is captured by the military or not, Holly remains trapped in the Leave It to Beaver fantasy of his childhood home when he was known as Henry Creel. He gives the vulnerable and impressionable Holly gifts and leaves her alone, but with strict instructions not to leave the house and go into the forest. This is all fine and normal and not creepy at all.

“We are saving children by kidnapping.”

Becna leaves Holly to pursue her next victim, Derek Turnbow (Jake Connelly), a bully in her elementary school class. Will (Noah Schnapp) uses his psychic connections to figure out that Derek is next on Vecna’s list, and after reprimanding his mother for treating him like a child, he comes up with a plan to keep the unwanted child safe. They kidnap Derek.

Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) points out that he’s just buying Derek time without helping him find Holly. Mike (Finn Wolfhard) makes his plan both bizarre and effective. They kidnap Derek’s entire family with drugs, set a Demogorgon trap in Turnbow’s house, tag him with a tracker, and track him to where Holly is being kept.

The plan requires the gang to scout Lucas’ sister Erica (Priah Ferguson) to break into the Turnbow home (her best friend and nemesis Tina is Derek’s older sister) and drug the family. Erica’s appearance, along with a cameo from teacher Mr. Clark (Randy Havens), marks the final checkmark on the list of fan-favorite characters who should appear in the final season. Good luck Netflix.

The gang prepares for a major attack. Nancy (Natalia Dyer) takes target practice, Dustin ruins Steve’s (Joe Keery) BMW and Robin (Maya Hawke), and Will steals tranquilizers from the hospital. There are some heart-to-hearts in the lead-up to the big night, and we learn that Nancy’s sometimes unstable boyfriend Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) is planning to propose. Will asks Robin pointed questions about how he and his girlfriend Vicky (Amy-Beth McNulty) got together. Is he thinking about Mike? This series strongly hints at that.

Operation Turnbow Freedom

At dinner, Erica shows up at the Turnbow family with crocodile tears and a drug-laced pie, which most of the family eats and passes out. (Watching Erica violently inject her friend Tina may make you wonder if she’s the show’s real villain). The gang breaks in, blindfolds and ties up Turnbow, and takes him away to an abandoned barn before converting the house for demonstration destruction. This is a montage of trademark kicks that fans love. Steve also gains a new signature weapon: a chainsaw. I’m glad Demogorgon didn’t show up before I finished it. I also hope the Turnbows have good homeowners insurance.

Conveniently timed when everyone is ready, the Demogorgon shows up at Turnbow’s house and a “Home Alone”-esque trap begins to set off. Nancy shoots the monster with a tracker and he returns to the Upside Down. Steve, Dustin, Jonathan, and Nancy use a tracking system to follow him in their car, driving him relentlessly through fences and yards. I thought this town was under military control, but I guess no one cares about disturbing the public order or committing crimes such as damaging property.

While they are in pursuit, the monster makes a complete U-turn. And the gang can’t figure out why until they hear the sweet sounds of a properly upset Derek waking up and realizing he’s no longer home. Will understood – the Demogorgon was heading straight for them. And it’s not exactly the A-Team of fighters waiting to be picked up in a barn.

Heading into the woods to find Max Mayfield

Meanwhile, Holly, left alone in Henry’s big mansion, is partying like a 10-year-old (or should), wearing a 1950s dress and cloak, looking like Little Red Riding Hood (a little on the nose). It’s a fun chocolate cake until someone rings the doorbell. The mailbox contains mail, a map, and a note that seems to be from Henry, telling her to meet him at “X” through the woods because he needs her help.

Holly decides to go on an adventure, and the map leads her not to walking red flag Henry, but to everyone’s favorite skateboard queen Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink), who is somehow trapped in the same sunny dimension as Holly.

Mad Max is back. Let’s try this.

Microsoft cloud updates support Indonesia’s long-term AI goals

0

Indonesia’s AI-driven growth efforts are gaining momentum as more local organizations look for ways to build their own applications, update systems, and enhance data monitoring. The country now has broader access to cloud and AI tools after Microsoft expanded the services available in the Central Indonesia cloud region, which it first went live with six months ago. This expansion gives enterprises, public organizations, and developers more options to run their AI workloads domestically rather than in offshore data centers.

This latest information was shared at the Cloud & AI Innovation Summit held in Jakarta. There, business and government leaders gathered to discuss how Indonesia can advance its AI ambitions. Speakers include Mike Chan, Head of Azure AI Apps & Agents in Asia, and Dharma Simorangkir, President Director, Microsoft Indonesia. Their message was that local capabilities are only useful if organizations leverage them.

During the event, Dalma said the new service “opens the door to innovation for all organizations, in Indonesia, for Indonesia,” and called on teams from across disciplines to build solutions that address the nation’s needs.

Move from just hiring to building

Many Indonesian companies are going beyond basic AI trials to design tools to solve problems specific to their operations.

Microsoft describes these types of organizations as “frontier companies” — teams that treat AI as a core part of how they do business, rather than as an optional add-on. Companies tend to focus on building applications that make tasks easier for customers, improve internal processes, and modernize outdated workflows.

To support this change, the Indonesia Central region now hosts a variety of Azure services that help teams design and deploy software. These include tools for building data-connected applications, services for storing and managing structured data, and a set of AI-enabled virtual machines that can train and run advanced models. Machines built for high-volume computing tasks allow teams to process complex AI workloads while keeping data in-country.

The region now supports Microsoft 365 Copilot, which brings AI capabilities to common work tools. Developers also have access to GitHub Copilot, which makes code suggestions and speeds up software development. These services form a connected stack that helps teams move from small pilots to production environments where reliability and cost control are more important.

Early Microsoft cloud projects emerging in Indonesia

The regional expansion follows steady demand since launch in May 2025. Companies in mining, travel, and digital services are already using local cloud infrastructure to update legacy systems and address stricter data governance needs.

Petrosea and Vale India are among the companies leveraging the region to support technology upgrades and secure local data storage. Digital-first players are also experimenting with more direct engagement with AI. One example is ticket.com, which built its own AI travel assistant using Azure OpenAI Service. The assistant allows customers to interact with the platform in everyday language, from checking flight updates to adding additional services after booking.

“Our advances in artificial intelligence are designed to give our customers the best experience possible,” said Dr. Irvan Bastian Arief, Vice President of Technology GRAND, Data and AI at ticket.com.

The company sees conversational AI as a way to simplify travel planning while reducing customer support friction.

Consolidate distributed data into one system

A key theme of the summit was the need to organize data before implementing AI at scale. To support this, Microsoft introduced Microsoft Fabric to the Indonesian market. The fabric is a single environment that brings together data engineering, integration, warehousing, analytics, and business intelligence. It includes Copilot capabilities that enable teams to prepare data and build insights without juggling multiple tools.

In many organizations, data is stored on various internal systems and cloud providers. Fabric brings these sources together in one place for teams, helping them improve governance, speed reporting, and control costs. The platform is designed for teams who need structure without building their own data foundation from scratch.

Preparing Indonesia’s workforce for practical AI using Microsoft tools

The day’s focus was not limited to infrastructure. Microsoft also highlighted its AI training program, Microsoft Elevate, which is now in its second year. The program has already reached more than 1.2 million learners and aims to certify 500,000 people in AI skills by 2026. The next phase will focus on practical use, encouraging participants to not only learn theoretical concepts but also apply AI in real-world settings.

The training is aimed at a wide range of groups, including teachers, nonprofit workers, community leaders, and people looking to improve their digital skills. Participants will learn through tools such as Microsoft Copilot, Learning Accelerator, Minecraft Education, and modules designed to illustrate how AI can support practical tasks.

During the summit, Dharma said cloud and AI are “the backbone of national competitiveness” and stressed that infrastructure only matters if people are ready to use it.

Building a long-term ecosystem

These efforts are part of Microsoft’s broader US$1.7 billion commitment to Indonesia from 2024 to 2028. Investments span infrastructure, partner support, and talent development. The company is also preparing to host GitHub Universe Jakarta, a developer-focused gathering aimed at fostering collaboration between software teams, startups, and researchers, on December 3, 2025.

Indonesia aims to establish itself as a center for safe and inclusive AI development in the region. With the expansion of Indonesia’s central cloud region, new data and AI tools, and increased focus on employee training, the country is taking steps to build the foundations needed for long-term digital growth. Businesses now have the option to build AI systems closer to home, developers have more resources, and employees have more avenues to learn practical skills.

The next few years will reveal how these elements come together as organizations move from experimentation to long-term use.

Is Walmart open today? What’s open on Thanksgiving Day?

0

play

Like an old friend coming home with a cold, Thanksgiving is approaching, with the sounds of pots, the smell of turkey, and voices filling the house with anticipation. During the festival, the question may also arise: what is open today and what is completely closed?

For Hispanic families across the country, from Miami to Los Angeles, Houston to New York, the answer is more than just facts. It’s a way to avoid the last-minute rush and have a calm day that combines tradition, logistics, and love. Thanksgiving 2025 will be a mix of business as usual, with no fans, special business, and a few exceptions. A practical map for navigating the holidays when the country comes to a standstill, except when essential ingredients run out or unforeseen events occur during the heat and celebrations.

Are postal services, delivery services, and banks open on Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving has been a federal holiday since 1941, when Congress officially designated the fourth Thursday in November as a day of national observance. This means that government services will operate on a special schedule.

Post and parcel:

bank:

Most banks and credit unions will remain closed. However, ATMs and mobile apps will continue to operate as usual, providing a convenient alternative for those who need to move money before a weekend shopping spree.

To anticipate delivery delays, courier services recommend sending urgent items by Tuesday the 25th, or wait until Friday the 28th when normal pace will resume.

Which supermarkets are open or closed on Thanksgiving? Schedules and exceptions

Nationwide, most supermarkets close for the holidays, a trend that has been growing over the past decade. However, some chains will be open with limited hours if you need a last-minute ingredient before turning on the oven.

Closed on Thanksgiving Day:

Special opening hours:

  • Whole Foods: 7am to 1pm
  • Sprout Farmers Market: 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Hook: Most facilities are open, but hours vary by city.
  • Food Lion: Open until 3pm local time.

To avoid unnecessary transfers, the chain recommends checking online store search engines before departure. In cities with a strong Latino influence, such as Miami, Houston, Phoenix, Chicago, and Los Angeles, you can adjust your schedule to accommodate anticipated holiday traffic.

Are shops and shopping centers open? you should know this

Thanksgiving has become one of the biggest holidays of the year, especially since major chains canceled late-night hours in time for Black Friday. This trend will continue in 2025.

Closed stores nationwide:

  • best buy
  • JC Penney
  • nordstrom
  • home depot
  • lowe’s
  • Burlington
  • berg
  • Office Depot / Office Max
  • pet smart
  • petko

Special cases:

  • Sephora: Business hours vary by shopping center or region.
  • Ace hardware: Most are closed, but there may be exceptions as they are independent stores.

Widespread closures mean emergency purchases such as chargers, tools and pet supplies need to be made in advance. The chain recommends using the location portal to check local availability.

Peppa Pig gentrified American children. Now kids who hate Britain will sound American.

0

LONDON – Orais Hallahan never sits on the couch. I never wear sweaters. Don’t take out trash. Why would she do that? She is British. Hallahan is sitting on the couch. I’m wearing a jumper. They take out the garbage.

“I don’t usually use American words when I speak. I try to stick to British English words, but my friends do,” Hallahan, 10, said one school night after a play date.

“I believe that ‘play date’ is another Americanism,” agreed her mother, Grainne.

Differences between American English, British English, and Irish English extend to spelling, pronunciation, idioms, and even the format of dates, numbers, and some punctuation. This gap has long been a source of misunderstanding, superiority complexes, and humor. Irish writer Oscar Wilde said in 1887, “We have really nothing in common with America today, except, of course, language.”

More than half a century later, Wilde’s fellow Irishman, playwright and literary critic George Bernard Shaw, was credited with opening up a rift over how the United States and Britain were “two nations divided by a common language.” No one seems to know where, in what context, or if the show actually said it, but never mind.

But it appears that the contentious language politics of “Tomite” versus “Tomahat” has entered a new chapter, or at least been reconsidered. Teachers across the UK say they are increasingly observing young pupils using “candy” instead of “sweets”, “nappy” instead of “nappy”, “elevator” instead of “lift”, “apartment” instead of “flat” and other words and phrases associated with American English. They see this as part of a generalized transatlantic cultural surge fueled by the daily instant diet of TikTok, YouTube, Netflix, and other transnational digital services.

“You hear snippets of their speech, you see snippets of their sentences, and they use real American slang all the time,” said Shabnam Ahmed, head of the English department at a school in Bury St Edmunds, a town near Cambridge. Her students range in age from 11 to 16.

“One of my students called me ‘uncle’ the other day, and I thought, ‘What does that mean?’

Her students helped her.

“‘Miss, that means you’re old,'” Ahmed said she was told. She is 34 years old.

Ahmed said she is not necessarily sure whether the words she hears students use originated in the United States or came to them through other channels, such as Britain’s rich multicultural urban areas. New slang is often spread throughout the country through music and the Internet, and British English is often influenced by various English languages. It includes not only American, but also Jamaican Patois, African English, South Asian languages, and various forms of speech associated with the British working class.

But she said she has certainly noticed more students using distinctly American English words, such as “gotten,” which is the past participle of the verb “get.” In British English, the participle is “got.” I have a new guitar. I got a new job. In the US, it would be “I got a new guitar.” I got a new job.

“My students always say things like ‘federal government,'” Ahmed added. “We don’t even have the FBI here.”

British people say “rubbish”

The available data seem to support this pattern of increased importation of American languages.

More than half of the 10,000 elementary school teachers surveyed said they had recently heard a student use words such as “rubbish” or “rubbish” instead of the British term “rubbish,” according to survey data shared with USA TODAY by Teacher Tap, which surveys British educators on school-related issues to inform public policy.

Among British middle and high school students, the figure was 33%. The Teacher App found similar levels of use of terms such as ‘candy’ rather than ‘sweets’ by children in the UK. Teachers also reported hearing students use words such as “fire engine,” “booger,” “sidewalk,” and “move the theater.” All of these are believed to have been imported from America.

Dr. Tapp believes this study is the first of its kind, meaning there are no statistical benchmarks to evaluate the findings and determine whether they reflect a quantitative increase over time.

Watch how Gen Alpha introduces their parents to popular slang

A new social media trend focuses on Generation Alpha explaining their complicated slang to their parents.

But British teachers who have been doing the job for decades say there is no question that the children they teach are using American words more frequently.

Stephen Lockyer is a primary school teacher in Surrey, a relatively wealthy county southwest of London. He has been teaching children ages 5 to 11 for 20 years. He said he now hears students using words like “sweater” all the time, which is a big change from past years.

Mr Lockyer said he believed this change was at least partly due to British children consuming large amounts of US-originated content on platforms such as TikTok and YouTube.

According to an industry study, 72% of 2-12 year olds in the UK watch YouTube. They spend an average of 83 minutes there each day. One of the most popular YouTubers in the UK is an American ‘Mr Beast’ named Jimmy Donaldson. His 452 million subscribers tune in to watch his high-budget stunts and charity work. The other is CoComelon, a 3D animated nursery series featuring the adventures of “Baby JJ” and his family. It was created by Jay John, also an American.

Mr Lockyer said it was “very common” to hear children at the school imitating American accents, especially when singing in the hallways, during special activities and at end-of-term celebrations. He admitted it was “weird” to sing “Empire State of Mind,” a perennially popular song by American rapper Jay-Z and singer-songwriter Alicia Keys, “in a posh British accent.”

He added that it’s not just American words and intonations that have penetrated the minds of British schoolchildren. It’s also politics. He said that in his experience, many British schoolchildren are familiar with President Donald Trump, but cannot necessarily name their own British prime minister.

“Trump is a brand,” Lockyer said. “Kids understand the brand.”

Some British parents report that their children speak with an American accent when they least expect it. “My 15-year-old son asked me to open the boot to put gas in while we were out driving the other day!” said one user on Mumsnet, a British social media platform geared towards parents and mostly women, in response to a reporter’s question posted on the site. Strictly speaking, “boot” rather than “trunk” and “petrol” rather than “gas” were the expected words in British English.

British invasion – verbal

Still, the flow of language is not all one-way.

Ben Yagoda, an American author and former English professor, started blogging in 2011. In that blog, he explored examples of what he calls “non-once Britishisms” (NOOBS), or British words and usage that have somehow infiltrated American speech and writing in a variety of ways.

Yagoda said that while “stories of Americans defiling or poisoning the purity of British English” have been around for hundreds of years, many words and expressions from British English have also been exported to the United States and entered the American lexicon to varying degrees.

“The word ‘brunch’ is one of them,” he says. “This is slang used in Oxford and Cambridge in the 1890s, and is now more popular in the United States.” His 2024 book “Gobsmacked!” examined many other works, including “one-off,” “go missing,” “curate,” “early days,” “easy pesy,” and “full of beans.”

Additionally, when many children were stuck indoors during the COVID-19 pandemic, some American parents reported that their children were saying “mama” instead of “mommy” and using phrases like “good luck” as pigs and other animal families with British accents spent more time playing games, visiting relatives and snorting and jumping into muddy puddles.

The British children’s animated television series Peppa Pig was popular with preschoolers before the pandemic. Its popularity grew as some US states imposed lockdown restrictions.

Nevertheless, some language experts are skeptical about how meaningful, lasting, and indeed surprising, it is that two countries that share a language can influence each other.

“Ever since the advent of radio and cinema, American words have continued to enter British English,” said Peter Torgill, a former language professor from Britain. “It’s a demographic issue. They actually hear more American English than they hear British English, because there are more British people.”

Also, M. Lynn Murphy, an American-born professor of linguistics at the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom, said that teachers and parents reporting that their children use more Americanisms is not the same as children using them more.

“If a child says ‘candy’ in a playground in the UK, people will notice it. If they say ‘sweetie’ a million times, no one will notice it,” she said, highlighting that what we notice and the conclusions we draw from it are often biased.

“It’s not that common in the UK to call ‘elevator’ an ‘elevator’,” she says. “This is one of the most common news articles on the subject, as well as news articles from the 1960s about the Americanization of British English.”

Murphy also noted that the vocabulary is highly portable.

“Words move,” she said. “It’s the accent that doesn’t move much.”

Hallahan, 10, said it was “really frustrating” when her friends said “couch” instead of “sofa.” She said she doesn’t watch much YouTube or follow American influencers.

She said that one time, after spending a lot of time with friends, she “accidentally” uttered American in front of her “nan,” which refers to her British grandmother. She said her grandmother got mad at her for that. That word was “garbage.”

2026 Volkswagen Tiguan Turbo brings GTI vibes to the compact SUV

0

play

  • This model has 33% more power than the base Tiguan.
  • The front and rear light bars of the 2026 VW Tiguan are noticeable.

Compact SUVs are becoming like Labradoodles, so popular that it’s hard to tell them apart.

You want to reach Chakit! First of all, the ball, right?

Introducing the 2026 Volkswagen Tiguan Turbo, the funniest version of the new Tiguan that debuted a few months ago as a 2025 model.

The base 2025 Tiguan is a bit of a little dog with just 201 horsepower. That was an improvement over the previous generation 2024 Tiguan, which made just 184 horsepower, but the base 2025 model is no Greyhound.

In contrast, the 2026 Turbo is a bouncy baby.

The Tiguan Turbo is VW’s first recognition that its SUVs should offer the same sporty driving experience that helped introduce compact cars 50 years ago with the legendary Golf GTI.

That’s a good start.

2026 VW Tiguan Turbo Main Features

  • 268 horsepower, 258 pound-feet of torque
  • paddle shift
  • front and rear light bar
  • heads up display
  • Illuminated front and rear VW logos
  • LED headlights and taillights
  • IR reflective sound insulation windshield
  • 15 inch touch screen
  • harman kardon audio
  • 20 inch aluminum wheels
  • american walnut dash trim
  • Front seats with 10-way ventilation and massage function
  • Heated rear outboard seats

How powerful is it? how much? How big is it?

The Turbo currently on sale is the top model of the 2026 Tiguan. It delivers 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque from a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine connected to an all-wheel drive system and eight-speed automatic transmission.

The Turbo sits at the top of the Tiguan model line, with prices starting at $43,085. All prices exclude $1,475 destination charge.

The rest of the Tiguan family is equipped with the same gearbox linked to a 201 horsepower version of the same engine. Pricing starts at $30,805 for the base front-wheel-drive model, and the SEL R-Line Turbo I drove tops out at $43,085.

The 2026 model year introduces the third generation of the Tiguan with all-new sheetmetal, interior, and electronics. It’s about 1.7 inches shorter than the 2024 model, but 0.4 inch taller and 0.6 inch wider. Ground clearance increases slightly. The non-turbo model is slightly lighter despite the new features added. The 2025 Tiguan was not equipped with a turbo.

The Tiguan competes with compact SUVs such as the Chevrolet Equinox and Equinox EV. Ford’s escape. Honda CR-V. Hyundai Santa Fe; Ioniq 5; Kia Sportage and EV6. Nissan Rogue. And Toyota’s RAV4.

Aside from EVs, there are few compact SUVs that offer sporty models, so the Tiguan Turbo has little direct competition.

2026 VW Tiguan trim levels and prices

  • S FWD: $30,805
  • S 4Motion: $32,305
  • SE front-wheel drive: $33,605
  • SEE 4Motion: $35,105
  • SE R-Line Black FWD: $37,245
  • SE R-Line Black 4Motion: $38,745
  • SEL R-Line Turbo 4Motion: $43,085

Prices do not include $1,475 destination charge

Driving impression

The Tiguan Turbo’s additional power comes thanks to a larger turbo that operates at higher boost pressure than the base engine. VW strengthened components such as pistons and connecting rods to withstand higher power output.

VW’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system decouples the rear axle to improve fuel economy at low loads.

On slippery roads or during active driving, up to 50% of the power is sent to the rear wheels. The stability control system has also been tuned for performance and grip.

A ‘Driving Experience Dial’ in the center console manages volume, ambient lighting and drive modes.

It sounds like a usability nightmare, but I found it plain and simple. Sport mode provides more responsive steering and improved throttle response, a benefit that I noticed while driving through the hills and lakes west of Detroit.

The Tiguan Turbo consisted of rough roads and gentle turns under autumn leaves.

Volkswagen has reduced the Tiguan’s weight by up to 170 pounds by eliminating the old model’s largely useless third-row seat and using more aluminum in the suspension and high-strength steel in the body. Savings are reflected in fuel economy and handling.

The interior is spacious, comfortable and quiet. The Turbo is equipped with a standard 15-inch touchscreen. The bottom trim is 12.9 inches, giving you even more screen space than some competitors offer. All trim levels are equipped with a crisp and configurable 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster.

Why buy a 2026 Volkswagen Tiguan Turbo?

Every mainstream automaker offers at least one compact SUV. They’re all talented, but few are memorable.

The 2026 Tiguan Turbo is a standout. Its performance, technology, and style may convince some older dogs that they need to learn new tricks.

‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 Premiere Crashes on Netflix

play

After a brief stint on the Upside Down due to some technical issues, Netflix’s Stranger Things Season 5 is officially released.

With the first four episodes premiering on Thanksgiving night, the cast is naturally reminiscing about what the beginning of the end of Stranger Things means to them. “This show has given me so much,” Millie Bobby Brown, who was just 11 years old when the show’s first season began filming, said on social media Wednesday.

Most importantly, Brown wrote, the show gave her “the most meaningful story to tell, Else.” The actress shared two photos of herself from earlier seasons of the show, and two more recent photos with Stranger Things creators, twins Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer, also known as the Duffer brothers.

“Enjoy Volume 1, everyone,” wrote Stranger Things 5’s Millie Bobby Brown.

“Thank you duffers for giving you a chance at everything you never should have wanted. A British girl with a big family, lots of energy, a strong point of view, and a heart to work tirelessly for the character you’ve built,” she wrote in the caption.

“I hope everyone enjoys Volume 1,” she concluded. “Meet me on the right 🆘”

“Stranger Things” The Undiscovered World also features core cast Finn Wolfhard (Mike Wheeler), Noah Schnapp (Will Bayers), Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas Sinclair), Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin Henderson), Charlie Heaton (Jonathan Byers), Natalie Dyer (Nancy Wheeler), David Harbor (Jim Hopper), and Winona Ryder (Joyce Byers).

As of Wednesday night, Woflhardt, Schnapp, McLaughlin and Matarazzo had not yet posted on social media about the end of the series.

Netflix encounters technical issues during release of ‘Stranger Things 5’

According to Variety , Netflix briefly crashed for about three minutes on Wednesday at 5pm PT/8pm ET, just as the fifth season of “Stranger Things” premiered on the streaming platform.

According to Variety, tens of thousands of people who logged onto Netflix to watch the first volume of the sci-fi series saw images of “Nailed It!” It has a caption that says, “Something went wrong. We’re sorry, but there’s a problem with your request. There’s a lot to explore on the home page.”

Millie Bobby Brown addresses David Harbour’s bullying allegations

The final season of Stranger Things and its press tour were nearly mired in controversy when reports surfaced in the Daily Mail on November 1 that Brown allegedly made harassment and bullying allegations against her on-screen father, Harbour, before filming began.

But at the Los Angeles premiere on Nov. 6, the on-screen daughter and father duo showed nothing but admiration for each other as cellphones and cameras measured their every move.

The Duffer brothers also addressed the matter in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that night, with Matt saying, “Obviously we don’t go into personal matters on set.” Now, the outlet reports that a few days after the premiere, they spoke with Brown and asked him why it was important for them to stand together amidst the rumored accusations.

“We’ve been doing that for the last 10 years,” Brown said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “So we’ve always been united in that. We love this show in everything we do, and we value our friendships more than anything.”

Brown also told the outlet that it was “lovely” and “really exciting” to be working with Harbor in the final season of Stranger Things.

“It was very nostalgic because it reminded me so much of Seasons 2 and 3, where we were kind of at odds with each other and she was growing up and she was trying to find her voice and he was trying to parent. And that dynamic is definitely coming back and I’m really excited for people to see that,” the actress said.

Netflix CEO reacts to ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 premiere

Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos released a lengthy statement on Instagram on Wednesday, November 26th, to mark the premiere of the final season of Stranger Things.

“From the moment Matt and Ross Duffer entered Netflix with Shawn Levy to pitch the show, we knew we were going to make history together. We weren’t sure that would happen with this show. It was still taking shape, but they had something special,” Sarandos said of his first meeting with the Duffer brothers.

“The launch of Stranger Things established the Duffer Brothers as world-class creators and Netflix as a destination for event entertainment, and 10 years and five seasons later, history is still being made,” he continued.

Sarandos reflected on the impact Stranger Things has had on pop culture and the broader cultural landscape. The show has also spawned “toys, games, experiences, clothing, award-winning best-selling music, animated spin-offs, a Broadway show, and eventually a spin-off series,” he wrote.

Sarandos concluded, “Thank you to the entire cast and crew for bringing fans to Hawkins and the Upside Down and changing television forever.”

7 cars that failed to reach their full potential

0

play

How many cars are 80% of the way to greatness, only to fall short of expectations? And why are certain cars and trucks never able to reach the heights that their specifications and design briefs seem to promise?

There are no easy answers. The success or failure of an automobile can depend on a variety of factors, including cost concerns, changing customer preferences, and changes in corporate strategy that can challenge even the most ambitious initiatives.

Here are seven cars that had all the right ingredients to be great, but whose rise to the top of their respective classes was interrupted by various circumstances. These models weren’t necessarily failures, but they never became truly memorable for American drivers.

1987–1996 Chevrolet Beretta

The Chevrolet Beretta was a great concept for General Motors, a way to leverage their investment in the N-body midsize platform to produce a slightly smaller and more stylish L-body coupe. Aimed at the sport compact segment that was becoming a major force in the market, the Beretta had a chance to sit on the ground floor alongside models such as the Honda Civic Si, Prelude Si, and of course the Mitsubishi Eclipse/Plymouth Laser/Dodge Daytona in terms of in-house imports.

If only Chevrolet had kept Beretta’s promise. Yes, you could also get an early GTU model with a 3.1-liter V6 making 145 horsepower. Later, you could also get the 2.3-liter four-cylinder quad-fours (each with a five-speed manual transmission) that were offered in the GTZ from 1990 to 1993 with 180 horses. GM also nicely tuned the Beretta suspension on these Hi-Po models to give them reliable handling chops. But the rest of the car was a bit of a nightmare. Rattles, low-quality plastics, and whatever General Motors cost cutting the accountants of the time were able to cram into the model (especially the cabin).

Gradually, the Beretta lineup thinned out, the quad-four was discontinued, the V6 became automatic only (negating the slight increase in horsepower), and then Chevrolet abandoned the model altogether. By the mid-90s, Beretta came out without being able to reach the heights of its rivals in the hearts of domestic customers.

1989–1998 Nissan 240SX

Before you throw stones in the comments section, please hear us out. We make a clear distinction between the Japanese-market Silvia (S13/S14 generation) and the rebadged model sold in North America as the Nissan 240SX.

In fact, the gulf between JDM and export models is at the heart of the entire discussion of why the 240SX was barely great. Upon returning to Japan, the S13 and S14 were each equipped with a number of turbocharged four-cylinder engines, including the famous SR20DET. The latter was tuned directly from the factory to 200 to 220 horsepower and became popular among tuners as the engine for the drift machines that were beginning to become mainstream in Japan at the time, quickly creating a legend for rear-wheel drive coupes and hatchbacks.

Unfortunately, only the body shape and drivetrain layout were transferred to American showrooms. Under the hood, Nissan first replaced the four-cylinder KA24E, then the KA24DE, the same engine family found under the hood of vehicles such as the Frontier pickup and the Xterra SUV that followed the 240SX. This was a poor choice for a sports car, never exceeding 155 horsepower, dooming the 240SX to be overshadowed by the more powerful Silvia.

1991–1996 Ford Escort GT

Ford wasn’t completely hands-off when it came to compact performance cars in the early 1990s, but the story of the Escort GT is another example of what could have been. After offering a popular entry-level hatchback in GT trim for much of the 1980s (and briefly offering a turbocharged 120-horsepower four-cylinder drivetrain), the brand’s fan-coveted complete redo was about to take place for the 1991 model year.

What’s the reason for the excitement? This generation of the Ford Escort moved from an in-house platform to a Mazda 323-based platform. For the most part, this pint-sized model was marketed as a value-leading commuter, but the BP engine it brought with it had great potential. In fact, the 323 GT and GTX had already offered Americans a turbocharged 132 horsepower version of the mill a decade earlier, and its motor (producing more than 200 horsepower in the Japanese market) Very receptive to suitable mods.

Sadly, turbocharged glory was not in the Escort GT’s future. The vehicle delivered a significant increase of nearly 40 horsepower over the base model, but the Mazda BP flavor reached 127 horsepower in naturally aspirated form. It was only slightly better than the most powerful GT from 1985, and while it was fun to drive, serious tuners looked elsewhere when ordering an affordable performance car. Escorts had completely disappeared from view by the mid-aughts.

2000–2006 Lincoln LS

In the early 2000s, Lincoln was in trouble. Sales of the Navigator SUV remained strong and the Town Car dominated livery in major cities, but there was little else in showrooms to draw new blood to the brand.

The Lincoln LS is a sports luxury sedan with European heritage, offering not only handsome styling but also a well-tuned suspension setup, rear-wheel drive, and a no-nonsense manual gearbox (Lincoln’s first since 1951).

Based on the DEW98 platform that also underpinned the retro Ford Thunderbird and Jaguar S-Type of the same period, buyers could choose between a 210-horsepower V6 (later boosted to 232 horsepower) or a 252-horsepower V8 (later boosted to 280 horsepower). Critics praised the Lincoln’s balance and styling, and while it beat comparable models on the dyno, it undercut BMW, Lexus, and Audi on price.

Unfortunately for the LS, there was little momentum from the Lincoln company to push the car from good to great. Early red flags included limiting the manual gearbox to V6 models and eliminating it completely by 2003. Early cars were also unreliable, tarnishing their reputation among a small group of adventurous Lincoln customers willing to bet on the brand outside of the context of funeral parades. The S-Type Jaguar was equipped with a full-throttle version of the AJ V8 (4.0 liters versus the LS’s 3.9 liters) and a supercharged version, but the LS needed incremental power increases and no tire-shredding option to compete with Cadillac’s new V-Series, which was also emerging with the new CTS sedan.

If a lot of that sounds like growing pains, you’d be right. Ultimately, Lincoln decided against developing a second-generation LS and replaced the expensive DEW98 platform with the cheaper, more pedestrian-friendly D3, shared with a wide range of Ford products, when the next sedan was introduced. The LS was scrapped and Lincoln wandered the badged wasteland for another decade of mediocre design.

2008–2013 GMC Full-Size Hybrid Truck

In a fleeting bright moment during GM’s global financial crisis bankruptcy era, the company made the shockingly strange but surprisingly effective decision to build hybrid versions of nearly every full-size truck and SUV it offers on the GMT900 platform. This means that the Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon, Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Silverado, and GMC Sierra have all been given battery-assisted editions that promise to improve the absolutely awful fuel economy inherent in these big eight-cylinder haulers.

And you know what? Mission accomplished. Paired with a 6.0-liter V8, the dual-mode hybrid design improves efficiency by about 25 percent in the city, combining a pair of electric motors and a gas-burning mill to deliver 332 horsepower and 367 pound-feet of torque. Most models are rated at 21/22 mpg city/highway, which is better than modern versions of these trucks in most configurations except for the optional turbodiesel drivetrain.

The GMT900 Hybrid was a good starting point that could lead us anywhere. The buyer held off on the purchase because the additional cost of saving 25% at the pump did not seem like a financially advantageous proposition, assuming he commuted a lot in the city. Any other automaker would have refined the setup further and sought better results with the second generation, but that wasn’t the case. The GMTK2XX platform it replaces turns to diesel as a fuel-saving measure, marking GM’s abandonment of hybrid trucks in today’s market where battery assist is commonplace.

2015–2025 Lexus RC

When Lexus introduced the RC nearly a decade ago, the sporty coupe seemed like a victory for the company. This model promised to refine the styling of the popular IS entry-level sedan while offering the performance potential of the F Sport Edition that its mothership was increasingly pushing into showrooms.

While the RC’s looks were impossible to ignore (some might say divisive) and a variety of interesting drivetrains were on the order form, there was a fatal flaw in the vehicle’s design origins when compared to similar two-door cars from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Cadillac that doomed it to permanent roadworthiness.

Initially, the RC was also intended to offer a drop-top body style. This required a platform that could remain rigid even without a roof. The IS platform was available in a convertible IS-C model, but it wasn’t stiff enough to meet the performance demands that an RC would face with the brand’s 5.0-liter V8 engine under the hood. This is where the fateful decision was made to combine the IS-C and the larger GS sedan platform into one one-off product overbuilt for RC.

As it turned out, the RC convertible never materialized, but its ghost lingered in the form of the coupe’s nearly 4,000-pound curb weight. That might not seem like a big deal in this day and age of Gigantosaurus performance machines, but back in 2015, it was a significant weight that Lexus engineers couldn’t erase from the Frankenstein RC’s driving dynamics. More of a muscle car than a sleek luxury car, the RC moved forward without any updates to correct its unnecessary bulk. Fun in a V8 in a straight line but surprisingly docile in other specs, the Lexus RC is never more than the sum of its parts.

2017–2020 Lincoln Continental

What if we bring back a retro nameplate but ignore the important aspects of its heritage that keep it alive in the hearts of American car buyers? When Lincoln introduced its refreshed Continental sedan in 2017, it realized that the car was ostensibly competitive in all but one respect: design.

The Continental was powered by an enhanced all-wheel-drive platform shared with vehicles like the Fusion and MKZ, and delivered as much as 400 horsepower from a twin-turbo V6 in higher trims. That was a good number for a brand that needed to relaunch a vehicle that was last seen in a relatively obscure front puller package almost 20 years ago.

Unfortunately, Lincoln ignored the one element that could have made this car a big hit: the suicide doors. These rear-hinged entry points were common on modern Rolls-Royce sedans, but more importantly, they represented a return to the Continental’s 1960s glory days. These were shown to great effect on the Continental concept in the early 2000s, but they were nowhere to be found when the latest version of the vehicle arrived for the 2017 model year, despite some on the design team insisting on their inclusion. Sales were slow, and Lincoln stylists quickly scrambled to correct the mistake. The “coach door” version of the car was rushed to market for the 2019 model year at an eye-popping price of $100,000, and one of every 80 units sold almost immediately. Ford ignored that hint and offered the Coachdoor Edition again in limited quantities (150 units) in 2020, and once again we instantly loved it.

By not making these traditional doors standard from the start, Lincoln lacked the drama needed to find its footing after years away from the game. The car was canceled after the 2020 model year, and the brand moved entirely to SUVs, leaving behind the potential that the Continental Coach showed.

Simon Cowell takes responsibility for Liam Payne’s death

0

play

Simon Cowell has opened up about what people are saying about his relationship with Liam Payne.

On the November 24 episode of the Rolling Stone Music Now podcast, the former X Factor UK creator and judge opened up about his last interaction with the late One Direction member, revealing that he had met Payne a year before his death.

Payne died on October 16, 2024, at the age of 31, after falling from the third floor balcony of the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Authorities later determined that he had a high alcohol level of 2.7 grams per liter, or 0.27% BAC, at the time of his death.

“I met him a year before this happened. He came to my house and we talked,” Cowell told podcast host Brian Hiatt. “He was great, by the way. This was the best I’ve ever seen him. We talked about his son, about being a father, and what it means.”

The 66-year-old said he told Payne to stop letting music drive his life and to “find something else to be passionate about.”

Before his death, Payne starred alongside Tony Award-winning Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls and Kelly Rowland of Destiny’s Child on the Netflix show “Building the Band,” where he mentored contestants in their search for the perfect musical group. Cowell told Payne, “You’re in a position where you can decide when you want to put something out and when you don’t want to put something out.”

The “America’s Got Talent” host also told Rolling Stone that he wondered “what more could have been done” in terms of protecting Payne.

“What would have happened if Liam wasn’t in the band?” he said. “I spoke to his mom and dad recently and all they kept telling me was that he was so proud of what he accomplished.”

Simon Cowell says he wishes he could have done more for Liam Payne

Cowell said he didn’t notice any red flags in his last conversation with Payne. His death affected him more than anyone he wasn’t related to, he said.

“Of course, if I had known he would have come to my house that day, I wish I could have turned back the clock,” he continued. “When I talked to him that day, to be honest, I felt really good about him. I thought, ‘Wow, you seem to be in a really good place.’ And I was trying to give him good advice about life in general…and we just talked for three or four hours, and after he left, I didn’t worry about him.”

Simon Cowell says he is responsible for Liam Payne’s death

After Payne’s death, a conversation erupted online blaming Cowell and others in the music industry for his eventual death.

Payne opened up about his struggle with alcohol and desire for sobriety in a 2019 interview with USA TODAY, calling his then-recent choice to go sober for a year “an example of growing up.”

“Luckily, I had the best people around me at the time (when I was drinking) and they helped me realize different points in my life where I could be better,” he told USA TODAY. “And obviously, when you have kids, you completely change the way you think about everything.”

Cowell told Rolling Stone that he has had to ignore the criticism directed at him online. “I don’t read any books like this. If I do, I’ll only make myself suffer.”

“Is there any point in reading something that’s not true when people are speculating and not knowing the truth? The idea that you’re essentially responsible for someone’s life is after you sign a contract with someone. You can’t do that. You can’t live with them,” he said.

“I tell everyone, ‘I’m always here if you need me.’ When he contacted me, it wasn’t like, ‘Simon, I really need your help.’ It was just, ‘I want to see you.’ And I think it’s great. I miss you too,” Cowell said.

How did Simon Cowell and Liam Payne meet?

Cowell met Payne through the British reality show The X Factor after auditioning twice in 2008 and 2010 and being rejected twice.

In 2010, Cowell, along with fellow judges Nicole Scherzinger and Louis Walsh, saved Payne and other teenage solo artists Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson from reviving the band by forming the band that would go down in history as One Direction.

Cowell posted on Instagram on October 18, 2024: “When you were 14, I had to tell you it wasn’t your time. And we both promised to see each other again. Many would have given up, but you didn’t. You came back and within months the whole world knew about Liam.”

Cowell’s music label then signed One Direction, who rose to megastardom and sold more than $70 million in copies before going on an indefinite hiatus in 2016.

National Guard deployments across the U.S.: What we know

0

play

Two West Virginia National Guard soldiers were hospitalized in critical condition after being shot in what investigators said was a “targeted” ambush near the White House in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 26, the day before Thanksgiving. The assault is being investigated as a possible act of terrorism.

President Donald Trump has made deploying the National Guard nationwide a recurring theme of his administration over the past six months. The Republican president said such efforts are needed to combat urban crime in “troubled” U.S. cities led by Democrats, despite widespread opposition from state and local leaders.

On October 28, during a trip to Asia, President Trump said, “We are sending in the National Guard, but if we need more than the National Guard, we will send in more than the National Guard, because we can have safe cities.” “We’re not going to kill people in our city. Whether people like it or not, that’s what we’re doing.”

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced later in the day that the government would deploy an additional 500 National Guard troops to the capital in response to the attack.

On August 11, President Trump declared a “crime emergency” in Washington and sent thousands of National Guard troops to the city “to save our nation’s capital from crime, blood, mayhem, filth, and worse.”

“We’re going to get our capital back,” he said.

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser called the move “disturbing and unprecedented,” noting that violent crime has been on the decline in the city since 2023.

In September, he and Hegseth dined with Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio at Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab as a way to show how safe the city had become.

Since then, some members of the National Guard have been seen carrying assault rifles patrolling monuments and subway stations, but they have often been limited to picking up trash and cleaning graffiti.

President Trump claimed on November 25 that there had been no murders in the city in six months, despite data showing there have been more than 60 murders in the city since May 25, according to ABC News.

President Trump has also threatened to deploy the National Guard to cities including New York, Baltimore, New Orleans, St. Louis and Charlotte, North Carolina, but such efforts have drawn backlash and been repeatedly blocked in court.

We will introduce how the deployment of National Guard troops is being carried out across the country.

Los Angeles, California

In June, President Trump ordered the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles, where violent protests against the president’s increased crackdown on illegal immigration erupted, with protesters throwing concrete at helmeted and riot-suited police officers.

President Trump said federal intervention was needed, citing inaction by Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. Mr. Newsom disputed this on social media, citing the preparedness of local police and saying the “deliberately inflammatory” military deployment “will only heighten tensions.”

“We are working closely with the city and county and there are no unmet needs at this time,” Newsom said. “This is a misguided mission and will undermine public trust.”

memphis tennessee

On September 15, the president announced he would send troops to Memphis, a move welcomed by Tennessee Governor Bill Lee (Republican), over the objections of Mayor Paul Young.

“We’re going to make Memphis safe again,” President Trump said.

Memphis, Tennessee’s second-largest city, had the highest rate of homicides and other violent crimes among large U.S. cities in 2024, a USA TODAY analysis of FBI data found.

On November 17, a Tennessee judge temporarily blocked the deployment, agreeing with state and local lawmakers that the use of military for law enforcement violates the state constitution. Presiding Judge Patricia Moskal said the city’s crime rate was not a “grave emergency” or “disaster” that would warrant military intervention by the governor.

portland oregon

In late September, President Trump said on social media that he would send the National Guard to Portland, a “war-torn” and “burnt-down” liberal stronghold.

The move was immediately challenged in court by the city and the state of Oregon.

In early October, after President Trump sent 200 members of the California National Guard to the state, U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut issued a temporary restraining order blocking the federalization and deployment of 100 members of the Oregon National Guard, as well as the deployment of National Guard troops from other states.

On November 7, Mr. Immergut ruled that the National Guard could not be sent to Portland and that the president overstepped his authority by attempting to do so.

“The evidence shows that these deployments were opposed by Oregon’s governor, unrequested by federal officials responsible for securing ICE buildings, and exceeded the president’s authority,” Immergut said.

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek called on California National Guard troops to return home in a statement.

“Oregon does not want or need military intervention, and President Trump’s attempt to federalize the Guard is a gross abuse of power,” she said.

Chicago, Illinois

In October, President Trump sent 300 Illinois National Guard troops to Chicago in what he called “Operation Midway Blitz” to support immigration enforcement agents in the country who were facing fierce opposition from demonstrators.

“It is completely outrageous and un-American to ask our governor to send troops within our state’s borders against our will,” said Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker.

Pritzker called the deployment a “manufactured performance,” noting that the Illinois State Police works with local authorities to coordinate law enforcement operations at ICE facilities.

“Let’s be clear: We don’t need to have troops on the ground in Illinois,” he said.

Clashes broke out after the deployment, with federal agents using pepper balls and tear gas to attack journalists, pastors and Chicago police officers, according to reports and lawsuits.

A federal judge in Chicago temporarily blocked the deployment, but President Trump asked the Supreme Court to lift the restrictions. A judge can rule on the temporary block at any time.

What we know so far about the suspect in the D.C. National Guard shooting

Authorities have detained an Afghan national in connection with the ambush shooting of two West Virginia National Guard soldiers near the White House in Washington, D.C., which is being investigated as a possible act of terrorism.

FBI Director Kash Patel said the Nov. 26 attack left two National Guard members in critical condition.

The suspect was shot dead shortly after the attack, described by Metropolitan Police Chief of Staff Jeffrey Carroll as a “lone gunman”. Mayor Muriel Bowser called the attack a “targeted shooting.”

The suspect’s identity has not been released by law enforcement officials.

President Donald Trump said in a speech in Palm Beach, Florida, that the Department of Homeland Security believes the suspect entered the United States from Afghanistan in 2021, but has not identified the suspect.

Reuters, citing anonymous Justice Department officials, said investigators have identified the suspect as Rahmanullah Rakanwar, 29, an Afghan from Washington state.

In a post on X, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the suspect entered the country on September 8, 2021 under “Operation Welcome Allies,” but did not name the suspect and said, “He should starve for the glory he so craves.”

The Federal Bureau of Investigation, which is leading the investigation, said in an email that it had been asked by USA TODAY to confirm the suspect’s identity, but “has nothing further to add.”

The attack occurred outside a subway station in the center of the capital, and the White House and other government buildings were placed on lockdown after gunfire. President Donald Trump, who was at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, at the time of the shooting, said in a social media post that the suspect was an “animal” and would pay a “huge price.”

Reuters reported that the attack was being investigated as an act of terrorism, citing anonymous sources. President Trump called the assault an “act of terrorism” in a speech.

President Trump called Afghanistan a “hellhole on Earth” and said the suspect was “brought in on a plane by the Biden administration in September 2021.” He also slammed Biden, calling him “the most disastrous president in our country’s history.”

He also claimed that the Biden administration had allowed “20 million unidentified and unvetted foreign nationals” into the country, and said the United States “must re-examine every foreign national who entered our country from Afghanistan under the Biden administration.” Trump added that his administration must take “all necessary steps” to remove immigrants from “countries that don’t belong here or that have an interest in our country.”

“If they don’t love our country, we don’t want them,” Trump said.
