Chronology of Washington DC National Guard Troops

0

President Donald Trump is strengthening his administration’s resolve to use military force as a tool to combat crime after two National Guard members were shot and killed within blocks of the White House.

The president is ordering an additional 500 troops to Washington, in addition to 2,200 other Guard members from across the country who are flocking to the nation’s capital.

President Trump’s deployment of the National Guard to U.S. cities has been a recurring theme for his administration, largely as a plan to fight local crime and quell fears about immigration crackdowns in Democratic-led municipalities, despite loud protests from state and local leaders.

U.S. District Judge Gia Cobb ruled on November 20 that the Trump administration illegally deployed the National Guard to Washington and blocked additional troops from enforcing the law in the nation’s capital without the mayor’s approval.

The Biden-appointed judge said in his order that the deployment represents a “substantial risk.” Cobb added: “This would result in a dangerous or deadly encounter that could have a devastating impact on public safety.”

Cobb temporarily put the ruling on hold to give the Trump administration a chance to appeal.

President Trump had deployed the National Guard to other major cities, including Los Angeles, Chicago and Portland, fearing alarm from Democrats. But as president, he has unique authority over Washington, which is not vested in any state.

But the District of Columbia’s attorney general accused the government of illegally usurping control of the city’s law enforcement and violating a law that prohibits the military from conducting domestic police operations.

Here is President Trump’s schedule for deploying security forces to the nation’s capital:

National Guard member shot near White House identified

President Donald Trump announced on November 27 that a National Guard member had been ambushed and shot dead by Afghans near the White House. The shooting sparked condemnation of the administration’s failures in immigration screening during the Biden administration and prompted a fundamental overhaul of asylum applications.

After the Nov. 26 shooting, which investigators said was a terrorism investigation, Sara Beckstrom, 20, died of her injuries and President Trump said National Guardsman Andrew Wolf, 24, was “fighting for his life.”

Janine Pirro, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, identified Beckstrom and Wolf as the two National Guard soldiers shot near the White House. Beckstrom, an Army specialist from Summersville, West Virginia, will be assigned to the 863rd Military Police Company, 111th Engineer Brigade and commissioned in June 2023, according to a West Virginia National Guard news release.

President Trump said on November 27: “Sarah Beckstrom from West Virginia is one of the Guardsmen we’re talking about, a very well-respected, young, wonderful person… She just passed away. She’s no longer with us.”

U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Wolf, of Martinsburg, West Virginia, was assigned to the 167th Airlift Wing’s Force Support Squadron. He was commissioned in February 2019, according to a news release.

The two were members of the National Guard sent to the area in August as part of President Trump’s anti-crime efforts. The suspect, described by officials as a “lone gunman”, is currently in custody and facing charges in connection with the attack, which is believed to be a possible act of terrorism.

“Brazen targeted attack”

The two National Guard soldiers were shot and killed near the Farragut West subway station on Nov. 26, officials said. The soldiers were on a “high-visibility patrol” near the corner of 17th Avenue and Eye Street, about two blocks from the White House, about 2:15 p.m. ET when the shooting occurred, officials said.

The suspect, identified as Rahmanullah Rakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national from Washington state, was also shot dead and subdued by other security personnel in the area.

At a press conference on November 27, Pirro called the incident a “brazen targeted attack” by a “lone perpetrator” who ambushed without provocation. The perpetrator used a .357 Smith & Wesson revolver.

In an interview on Fox & Friends, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said Beckstrom volunteered over the holiday so others could spend Thanksgiving with their families.

“But now their families are in the hospital room with them and they are fighting for their lives,” Bondi said.

He added that if the two guards did not survive, the Justice Department would “do everything in its power to seek the death penalty” against the suspects, who should not have been allowed into the country.

“I have nothing but good things to say about him.”

Wolf’s high school alma mater in West Virginia, according to WUSA9 He was recognized in a now-deleted social media memorial.

“Our Appleman community is deeply saddened to learn that Musselman High School graduate Andrew Wolf was one of the National Guard members injured in the shooting in Washington, D.C.,” the statement said. “Please remember Andrew, his family and all those affected.”

DC News Now reported that Wolfe graduated from the school in 2019. Christine Redstreak, a counselor at Musselman High School, described him to the newspaper as “a really nice guy.”

“I have nothing but good things to say about him. He impacted the Musselman community just by serving and giving to others,” Redstreak said.

Suspect faces multiple charges

Pirro said at a news conference that the suspect will be charged with three counts of assault while armed with intent to murder and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence. Pirro added that the suspect faces 15 years in prison for assault with intent to kill.

Pirro said additional charges would depend on the well-being of the guards, echoing the sentiments of other officials, adding: “We hope they survive and that the top charge doesn’t have to be first-degree murder.”

Rahmanullah Rakanwal worked for a CIA support unit in Kandahar and reportedly overstayed a visa given to people facing persecution for supporting the United States. The suspect is said to have entered the United States from Afghanistan in 2021, which President Trump blamed on the Biden administration.

The incident prompted President Trump to deploy an additional 500 troops to the nation’s capital. The motive for the shooting is unknown.

“It’s too early to say what the motives are, but there are certainly areas that we’re looking at, but we’re not ready to say yet,” Pirro said.

West Virginia governor visits victims in hospital

In a video message shared with X on Thursday afternoon, Nov. 27, West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey said he visited Beckstrom, Wolf and their families in the hospital the night of the shooting.

“We’re talking about really brave people here. These are brave people who stood up to defend our country and defend our nation,” Morrisey said. “This is a volunteer.”

Prime Minister Morrissey called the incident “unspeakable violence” and called for justice.

Dolly Parton shares Thanksgiving message amid health issues

Dolly Parton is expressing gratitude after a difficult year.

After missing the event as he continues to battle health challenges, the country music legend shared a heartwarming message with fans on Thanksgiving Day.

“Hi! It’s Dolly here and I wish you and your families a blessed Thanksgiving this Thanksgiving,” Parton cheerfully said in a video posted to Instagram on Thursday, Nov. 27. “I’m so grateful for all of you and the memories we’ve shared over the years.”

She gave a nod to one of her hit songs in her message. “Happy Thanksgiving everyone. And please know that I will always love you.”

The legendary country star’s message comes after a tumultuous year in which she has dealt with ongoing health issues following the death of her husband Karl Dean.

In October, she tried to calm worried fans by pointing out that she “didn’t take care of herself” and “let go of a lot of things that I should have taken care of” after Dean’s death.

“I know everyone thinks you’re sicker than me these days,” Parton said in a video posted to Instagram in October, with the caption, “I’m not dead yet!”

“Do I look sick to you?” Parton said in the video. “I’m doing my best here!”

Earlier this month, the country legend was inducted into the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions Hall of Fame in Orlando, Florida, but was unable to attend.

She instead accepted in a video message shared on Dollywood’s Instagram page.

“I wish I could have been with you in person today, but as you know I’ve been dealing with some health issues this fall, and my doctor has told me to take some time off,” Parton said in the video. “I am truly disappointed that I will not be able to attend, but I wanted to express my gratitude for this wonderful honor.”

She also accepted the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award via video, but her agent informed her well before the honorary Oscar ceremony that scheduling conflicts would prevent her from attending.

“We didn’t have much to share, but mom and dad taught us that the more you give, the more blessings will come to you,” Parton said in a video acceptance video. “And like this award tonight, I have been blessed beyond anything I could have ever dreamed of.”

Although she has not revealed details about her health issues, she remains positive. “Everyone says, ‘Well, you’re going to be 80 years old,'” she said in a sit-down interview with People magazine. “If you allow yourself to get older, you will get older. I say, ‘There’s no time to get older!'”

Director Quentin Tarantino accuses ‘The Hunger Games’ of being a rip-off of ‘Battle Royale’

0

play

Director Quentin Tarantino has made no secret of his feelings for the popular book series.

The famed director had some choice words about The Hunger Games during a recent appearance on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast, accusing the Suzanne Collins book series of imitating Hiroharu Takami’s 1999 novel Battle Royale, also about dystopian teenage competition, which was also made into a film by director Kinji Fukasaku in 2000. Battle Royale has repeatedly topped Tarantino’s list of favorite movies.

“‘Battle Royale’ is based on a novel. I don’t understand why the Japanese writers didn’t sue Suzanne Collins for all the (expletive) stuff she owns,” Tarantino said on the Tuesday, Nov. 25 episode of the podcast. “They just stole the (expletive) book!”

Tarantino went on to criticize book reviewers who failed to point out the similarities between Collins. “Stupid book reviewers would never go see a Japanese movie called ‘Battle Royale.’ That’s why the stupid book reviewers didn’t criticize Collins for this movie. They were talking about how it was the most innovative (expletive) thing they had ever read. As soon as the movie critics saw this movie, they said, ‘What (expletive)? Except it’s just ‘Battle Royale.’ PG!”

Collins has previously denied that her work was inspired by Takami. In 2011, she told the New York Times, “I had never even heard of the book or its author until it was submitted. At that point, it was mentioned and I asked my editor if I should read it. My editor said, ‘No, I don’t want that world in your head. Just keep doing what you’re doing.'”

The Hunger Games best-selling book series has become more than just a popular book series. It was a gateway to early fandom culture, cosplay material, middle school games to play in the woods, and dystopian literature.

The film series continues to generate buzz and box office magic, with the original film and its first sequel both grossing over $400 million since their release, according to Box Office Mojo.

The sixth film, Sunrise on the Leaping, is scheduled to be released in theaters on November 20, 2026. The dystopian drama, an adaptation of Collins’ prequel about Katniss Everdeen’s mentor Haymitch Abernathy, is set 24 years before the events of the first film, during the 50th Hunger Games, a special quarterquel that occurs every 25 years. Abernathy, who later becomes Everdeen’s strict but endearing advisor, is the winner of these games.

Top 20 Tarantino movies include these classics

Tarantino’s comments came as he listed his favorite films of the 21st century so far. The first 10 of his list of 20 are:

  • “West Side Story” directed by Steven Spielberg (20th place)
  • Eli Roth’s “Cabin Fever” (No. 19)
  • Bennett Miller’s “Moneyball” (No. 18)
  • Pracha Pingaeo “Chocolate” (No.17)
  • Rob Zombie’s “The Devil’s Rejects” (No.16)
  • Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” (No. 15)
  • Richard Linklater’s “School of Rock” (No. 14)
  • “Jackass: The Movie” directed by Jeff Tremaine (13th place)
  • “Big Bad Wolves” by Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushad (No. 12)
  • Kinji Fukasaku’s “Battle Royale” (No. 11)

How long does it take to charge an electric car? What you need to know.

0

Charging your EV may be easier than you think.

play

  • Electric vehicle charging technology has come a long way in the past five years.
  • With a Level 3 charger, you can have your car back on the road within 20 minutes.
  • Developing a charging plan and knowledge of the types of charging sessions your lifestyle requires are essential to EV ownership.

Some of the world’s largest automakers, including Ford, Hyundai, Honda, Toyota, Volkswagen, BMW, and others, are producing competitive electric vehicles. Some best-selling EVs, like the Tesla Model Y, outperform even popular gas-powered cars.

Owning an EV isn’t always an easy transition, but thousands of drivers have made the switch from gas-powered cars to electric vehicles this year. If you’re considering an electric vehicle for your new daily driver, one of the most important factors is charging time.

If you’re considering switching to an electric vehicle, here’s what you need to know about EV charging times.

How long does it take to charge an electric car?

Charging speed depends on the size of your vehicle’s battery and the wattage of the charger you’re using.

First, it’s important to understand the different types of electric vehicles.

  • Battery electric vehicle (BEV): A vehicle that runs solely on electricity and is propelled by a battery-powered electric motor. Charged from an external power source.
  • Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV): Although it is a battery-powered vehicle that can be charged from an external power source, it also has a small internal combustion engine that can charge the battery. It uses only batteries to travel a reasonable distance, but can also run on gasoline in certain driving conditions or when electricity is not available.
  • Hybrid electric vehicle (HEV): A vehicle that runs on a combination of an internal combustion engine and a battery pack that cannot be recharged externally.
  • Fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV): A vehicle that converts hydrogen into electricity to drive an electric motor. It uses compressed hydrogen gas stored in the vehicle’s tank, rather than being recharged from an external power source.

BEVs and PHEVs are two types of electric vehicles that can be charged from an external power source, either at home, at work, or at a public charging station.

There are three charging speeds for electric cars.

  • Level 1: 1.2 to 2.4 kilowatts, typically found in residential homes.
  • Level 2: 3.6 to 19.2 kilowatts, commonly used for home, work, or public charging
  • Level 3 Direct Current Fast Charging (DCFC): Fastest charging speeds typically found at stations along highway corridors, 50 to 350 kilowatts

A Level 3 charger can charge an electric vehicle battery up to 80% in 20 minutes to an hour. DCFC chargers slow down when the battery approaches 100% to prevent damage, so drivers are advised to continue driving when the battery reaches 80%.

Level 1 devices can fully charge a BEV from zero in about 30 to 70 hours and a PHEV in about 8 to 14 hours. This is the slowest and most inconvenient charging method for drivers. Overnight charging is best to replenish a small amount of the total percentage of the battery.

A full charge using Level 2 equipment takes approximately 4 to 12 hours for BEVs and 2 to 5 hours for PHEVs. Level 2 chargers are currently the most common and accessible type of charger for EV drivers. Companies like ChargePoint, Tesla, and others sell Level 2 home chargers that make charging more convenient. Additionally, some automakers offer free charging adapters to encourage new EV purchases.

Two-time major champion golfer Fuzzy Zeller dies at age 74

0

Fuzzy Zoller, a 10-time PGA Tour winner and one of the most decorated golfers in tour history, has died, the PGA Tour announced on Thursday, November 27th.

Zoller is 74 years old. The cause of death has not been disclosed.

He combined golf skills with humor, but his racist joke about Tiger Woods sparked a firestorm.

The controversy came as Woods was trying to win the 1997 Masters, with Zoller calling Woods “that brat” and urging Woods not to ask for fried chicken or collard greens at next year’s pre-Masters Champions Dinner in Augusta. Zoller apologized, but the comment haunted her for years.

“The PGA Tour is saddened by the news of Fuzzy Zoller’s passing,” PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said in a statement published in “He left an indelible mark on his family. Fuzzy was a great athlete with a great sense of humor and was loved by fans and fellow players alike. We honor his accomplishments and extend our deepest condolences to his family.”

Zoller attracted galleries as much for his humor as for his golf exploits, which was important in its own right. He won the Masters in 1979 and the U.S. Open in 1984. He also won the PGA Tour Champions twice.

Racist ‘fried chicken’ joke haunts Zoller

Zoller had already completed the final round of the Masters in 1997, when the then 21-year-old Woods was hurtling toward victory and his first green jacket.

“The kid drives well and putsts well,” Zoller told CNN when asked for his thoughts on Woods, according to the Associated Press. “He does everything he can to win.” So if he comes in here, do you guys know what you’re going to do? You pat him on the back, congratulate him, have fun, and tell him not to serve fried chicken next year. Understood? “

As he left, Zoller turned around and said, “Or collard greens or whatever they serve,” according to the Associated Press.

Zoeller apologized the next day, but initially denied calling Woods “boy.”

“I’m a fun-loving person. I’m always joking and telling jokes. I apologize if anyone interpreted that as a racial remark.”

However, Zoller continued to face backlash and issued further apologies.

“I cried many times,” Zoller wrote in Golf Digest in 2008. I have hundreds of friends, including people of color, and they can attest to that. Still, I accepted the fact that this case would never go away. ”

Trump administration considering asylum applications approved under Biden administration

WASHINGTON — The Department of Homeland Security announced Nov. 27 it would begin a review of all asylum cases approved under the Biden administration after two National Guard members were shot and killed by a suspect who appeared to have entered the country from Afghanistan to seek asylum.

DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement that the department has stopped processing immigration applications for Afghan nationals “indefinitely, pending further review of our security and vetting procedures.”

“The Trump administration is also reviewing all asylum applications approved under the Biden administration, but the Biden administration has been unable to vet applicants at scale,” McLaughlin said, according to Reuters.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services previously announced that it would suspend all immigration applications for Afghan nationals on November 26.

The suspect in the case, Rahmanullah Rakanwal, 29, came to the United States from Afghanistan in 2021 as part of a program for Afghans working with the U.S. military during the Biden administration.

However, multiple news outlets including CBS, ABC and Fox News reported on Thursday that Lakhanwal was granted asylum by the Trump administration in April.

National Guard shooting reignites criticism of Afghan refugee program

The Nov. 26 ambush of two National Guard soldiers near the White House has sparked fresh criticism of a Biden administration-era plan to bring the suspected gunman to the United States after two decades of war in Afghanistan.

Reuters reports that Rahmanullah Rakanwar, 29, an Afghan from Washington state, has been identified as the suspect in the shooting.

Lakhanwal gained entry to the country through Operation Welcome Allies. The program was originally a special visa program created to evacuate vulnerable Afghans and their families who had cooperated with U.S. forces during the war when the Taliban regained control during the U.S. withdrawal.

At the time, there was significant pressure from lawmakers of both parties to act quickly amid concerns that Afghans who served with U.S. forces would be killed. This allowed the Biden administration to speed up the process compared to previous refugee efforts.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in 2021 that “our objective is to relocate eligible individuals out of the country in advance of lifting the troop withdrawal at the end of August.”

But the shooting, which seriously injured two West Virginia Guardsmen identified as Sarah Beckstrom, 20, and Andrew Wolf, 24, has reopened discussions about the plan, including an earlier warning in a Department of Homeland Security report outlining how the Biden administration failed to track Afghan refugees.

The DHS Inspector General’s report found that some people left U.S. military bases designated as “safe havens” without the authorities’ knowledge. That’s because tracking systems aren’t designed with departures in mind. Other data quality issues included contact information for evacuees.

According to reports, Lakhanwal has overstayed his visa and is in the US illegally.

President Trump blasts program to allow ‘unvetted aliens’ into US

Immediately after the shooting, President Donald Trump issued a video statement condemning it as a “heinous assault” and “act of terrorism.” He also claimed that the previous administration allowed “20 million unknown and unvetted aliens” into the country, placing much of the blame on former President Joe Biden, his most high-profile political target.

“This attack highlights the greatest national security threat facing our country,” President Trump said.

Other Trump administration officials, including Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, echoed that the program has allowed “many individuals on mass parole without review” to enter the United States, and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced on November 27 that it would suspend all admission requests from Afghan nationals.

Before the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021, the Biden administration faced immense pressure from lawmakers of both parties fearing retaliation against Afghan allies.

Congress created a special visa program in 2006 for Afghans and Iraqis who served with the U.S. military in those two conflicts, but it took nearly three years to process Afghan applications, the State Department said at the time, in part because of the rigorous vetting process.

The Pentagon began its troop drawdown in May 2021, when about 18,000 Afghans were awaiting approval and fewer than 11,000 slots were available.

By July 2021, a month before the withdrawal, the Biden administration launched a “Welcome Allies” program to evacuate thousands of interpreters and translators, a move supported by Democrats and Republicans alike.

DHS said many people arriving under the program were granted parole for two years, subject to necessary testing and review. Approximately 190,000 Afghans were resettled in the United States under this operation and provided with temporary housing and support on U.S. military bases.

But some Republicans, including former Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, questioned the process, pointing to the inspector general’s report on the plan. He warned that without a rigorous vetting and in-person interview process, the United States “faces a growing threat.”

“Instead, this administration has tolerated a lack of effective testing of Afghan evacuees, putting our communities at risk, and now seeks to fast-track their citizenship through the upcoming appropriations process,” Portman said in a September 2022 press release.

“As I have said repeatedly, I support the resettlement of the Afghans who have fought alongside us and our allies for the past 20 years…The United States faces a growing threat from the current administration’s devastating displacement of Afghans without a rigorous and thorough review.”

In 2023, Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.) said that “questions remain about the nature of those enrolled in domestic resettlement programs” and called for more transparency after withdrawal.

However, questions will remain about how the current administration has dealt with the critical issue of the flood of refugees.

Months before the shooting, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), chairman of the powerful Judiciary Committee, asked the Federal Bureau of Investigation for answers about security concerns about vetting Afghan evacuees.

In a March 11 letter to FBI Director Kash Patel, the Iowa senator questioned the investigation of Nasir Ahmad Tauhedi, an Afghan refugee arrested in an ISIS-backed terrorist attack aimed at the 2024 election.

Among the questions was what steps federal law enforcement agencies have taken to monitor Afghan evacuees considered a national security concern.

Refugee group: Afghans remaining in the U.S. are left ‘legally incapacitated’

The impact of the massive investigation into the tens of thousands of Afghans who entered the country under Operation Welcoming Allies is not yet clear, but supporters are already biting their nails.

Global Refuge, a nonprofit organization that has resettled some 25,000 Afghans since 2021, denounced the decision to end what it called “lifesaving protections” for displaced people it helped the United States during the longest war. The party is calling on Congress to move toward permanent residence for the estimated 11,700 Afghans who remain legally incapacitated in the United States.

Krish Omara Vignaraja, the group’s president and CEO, said ending Afghans’ temporary protected status is “not consistent with the reality of the situation” in their homeland.

“The situation remains dire, especially for our allies who supported the U.S. mission, women and girls, religious minorities, and ethnic groups targeted by the Taliban,” he said in a statement to USA TODAY. “The insecurities of our Afghan clients are real and growing. They want to contribute, work and live in peace, but now face legal impasse and fear of deportation.”

One of Trump’s first actions upon returning to the White House this year was to suspend the refugee program, which includes some protections for displaced Afghans, despite widespread reports of a Taliban-led crackdown.

Vignaraja said further removals could create a domino effect for Afghan nationals, who have no other immigration status and whose applications are pending, could begin to accumulate illegal stays and create barriers to future immigration benefits.

He said temporary protections were never intended to be a long-term solution and that the Trump administration’s ending of protections without a permanent alternative would leave those who helped the United States in a “precarious position.”

“America has promised to protect those who support us, and this Congress must deliver on that promise by providing a durable path to security and stability,” Vignaraja said.

In a Nov. 26 post on X, Sean Vandiver, president of AfghanistanEvac, a group that helps resettle Afghan allies after the U.S. withdrawal, warned that the gunman must be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law, but not to demonize entire communities.

He said Afghan immigrants resettling in the United States undergo “the most extensive security screening of any nation.”

But such a path may become impossible as anger over the shootings intensifies.

West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrissey called the attack an “unspeakable act of violence” as the president ordered an additional 500 National Guard troops to Washington.

“If they don’t love our country, we don’t want them,” Trump said in a video statement.

Musician Jackson Browne’s son Ethan Brown died after being found unresponsive in his home on Tuesday morning, November 25th. He passed away at the age of 52.

“We ask for privacy and respect for our family during this difficult time,” Jackson’s official Facebook account said in a short statement posted on Wednesday, Nov. 26. The cause of Ethan’s death has not been determined and “further details are not available at this time,” the statement said.

The singer-songwriter’s son continued to work as an actor, including in 1995’s “Hackers” and 2004’s “Raising Helen,” while also working as a model.

According to People magazine, he is the son of Jackson’s late wife, Phyllis Major, who died by suicide in 1976, one year after their marriage, when her son was an infant.

The 2021 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee told Root Magazine that becoming a father is a priority in his life. “There were only two things I wanted to be able to balance: being a songwriter and being a father,” Jackson told the magazine at the time. “And I thought of it like this: If I have to be the father, I hope I know that and just do it.”

Jackson is also the father of Ryan, 43, with ex-wife Lynne Sweeney.

Ethan eventually became a father himself, and his father said he was a great father in that regard.

“Ethan is a great father, a great son, a great man,” Brown said in 2022 at True Rock Revival. “I love seeing him with his kids. Seeing him be in movies, model, be with his daughter, and be such a great father makes me so proud. It makes me feel like I really did the right thing in life.”

play

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is once again marching through town with oversized floats, Christmas cheer and star-studded performances.

The 99th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade resumed Thursday, with thousands of fans lining the streets of New York City for the annual holiday event.

Following a start time of 8:30 a.m. ET, 30 minutes earlier than usual, the parade will feature fan-favorite balloons such as Pillsbury Doughboy and Bluey, as well as new balloons such as Buzz Lightyear from Pixar’s “Toy Story” series and Derpy Tiger from Netflix’s “KPop Demon Hunters.” NBC’s “Today” hosts Savannah Guthrie, Hoda Kotb and Al Roker returned to cover the parade even though Kotb parted ways with “Today” in early January.

Singer Ciara, one of the performers that night, told Roker she was grateful for the “magical time” of the year. She will be lining the parade route along with other stars including Cynthia Erivo, Shaggy and Colbie Caillat.

Stay tuned for details on all performances and celebrity appearances.

As the Santa Claus parade draws to a close, the season of Christmas and Duet approaches.

Country music stars Drew Baldrige and Mickey Guyton came together to perform their duet “Joy to Your World” following an appearance by actress Nicki DeLoach, who will star in “Grand Ole Opry Christmas.” Cobie Caillat and Gavin DeGraw also joined forces to sing the Christmas classic “Let It Snow.”

Wearing a red fur stole, black fringed gloves and a cowboy hat, Laney Wilson set off fireworks (literally) to country tunes “Somewhere Over Laredo” and “Peace, Love and Cowboys.”

Is Santa Claus listening? Singer Lauren Spencer Smith hinted that she was, when she performed the holiday song “Last First Christmas” on a Kinder float. Darlene Love packed a Christmas punch with her soulful “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” aboard the Balsam Hill float.

Spotted at Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade: ‘Gossip Girl’ star Taylor Momsen. The actress and singer went back to her Christmas roots with a rocking rendition of “Where’s Christmas?”

Momsen, who was seven years old when the 2000 Christmas classic “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” was released, gave the song and look a punk twist, pairing a sparkling red minidress with a leather jacket and smoky eyeshadow.

Singers Debbie Gibson and Meg Donnelly wore winter whites for a peppy version of the song. Gibson sang “Only in My Dreams” with a vibrant saxophone accompaniment, while Donnelly sang and danced to “Dancin’ Around.”

From one of the year’s biggest movies to one of the world’s biggest stages.

EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Lei Ami, who voice Hunter/X from “KPop Demon Hunters,” appeared at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade after an introduction from actor Ken Jeong and performed a powerful rendition of the song “Golden” from the hit Netflix animated film. As the song hit its final high note, confetti rained down around the group dressed in black.

If you’re wondering about the mysterious Mr. Fantasy who performed along the parade route, you’re not alone.

The singer, who is the alter ego of “Riverdale” actor K.J. Apa, hopped on a pirate ship float for his song “Mr. Fantasy.” The New Zealand actor looked unrecognizable in a green military-style jacket and plaid pants, complemented by green sunglasses and a black bob with bangs.

Toys R Us and…Lil Jon?

The rapper and Grammy Award-winning producer livened up the parade with an energetic performance from the Toys R Us float (and the brand’s mascot giraffe). Wearing a red fur-lined jacket and sunglasses, the DJ rapped along to his song “Turn Down For What?”

Busta Rhymes and Teyana Taylor brought some New York energy to the parade.

Joining the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles float, the pioneering hip-hop star rocked the microphone in an all-white down jacket ensemble. “Happy Thanksgiving, New York City! Hands up. Are you ready? It’s time,” Busta Rhymes said in his trademark raspy voice. He rapped excerpts from his hits “Jump,” “Break Ya Neck,” “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See,” and a verse from Chris Brown’s “Look at Me Now.”

Taylor, a Harlem native, performed her anthem “Made It” on a float with her daughter Junie, wearing a cream-colored loop-detail coat and balaclava.

Just hours after Part 1 of Stranger Things season 5 premiered on Netflix, the show headed to the parade with a new float complete with caution tape, a demogorgan, and workers in lab suits. And in keeping with the show’s Upside Down theme, rock band Foreigner performed their hit song “Cold as Ice.”

Please put your feet up! Although Lady Gaga herself wasn’t participating in the parade, her spirit was strong. Dance group Spirit of America paid tribute to the pop star with a high-energy dance set to a medley of her music, including “Abracadabra.”

Conan Gray received high praise for his acting. Dressed in a white feathered outfit with sparkles and sequins, Gray belted out his hit song “Vodka Cranberry” with a big band.

Andrea Bocelli’s son, singer Matteo Bocelli, also joined in with his powerful vocals, giving a great performance of his song “Caruso”.

Kool & the Gang on a float at the Bronx Zoo proved the parade was a “celebration” and sang upbeat tunes.

Jewel was a bright spot on the parade route, rocking an electric yellow coat as she sweetly sang “You Were Meant for Me.”

The cast of the Tony Award-winning musical “Buena Vista Social Club” gathered for a lively performance of the show’s song “Candela,” with star Natalie Venecia Belcon taking the microphone along with the band and dancers.

The cast of “Ragtime,” a revival of the original Broadway production based on EL Doctorow’s 1975 novel, sang an emotional version of “Wheels of a Dream.”

Next up is “Just in Time,” featuring Jonathan Groff, Sarah Hyland and Sadie Dickerson, and an unexpected cameo from “Saturday Night Live” star Bowen Yang, who was seated near the performance, starting with “Beyond the Sea,” before launching into a frenetic big band medley of Bobby Darin hits.

Ciara showed off her perfect pink pop during her performance of her new hit song “Low” from her new album “CiCi”. On the Kalahari Resort float, the singer and two backup dancers wore baby pink ensembles, and Ciara’s feathery sleeves moved as she danced to the beat.

Brazilian singer-songwriter Luisa Sonza joined Dora the Explorer’s float for a lively performance of “Luisa Manequim” from her 2023 album Escandalo Entimo.

After joining Guthrie and Kotb at the news desk, Elmo ran to the “Sesame Street” float with Broadway star Christopher Jackson and performed a fun version of the show’s theme song.

Country star Russell Dickerson performed his 2025 song “Happen to Me” on a Jolly Green Giant float.

Shaggy performed a medley of all of his biggest hits, including “Mr. Bombastic,” “It Wasn’t Me,” and “Angel.”

After the stuffed animal became a hot topic all year long, the Love Bus made its appearance in the Thanksgiving Day Parade. Pop Mart’s character Labubu appeared Thursday as a fluffy 16-foot-tall inflatable sculpture on the “Pop City” float, with the gremlin-like fluffy character waving to the crowd.

‘Wicked’ star Cynthia Erivo opens the show

Tony Award-winning “Wicked” star Cynthia Erivo opened this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade with a soulful rendition of Nina Simone’s “Feeling Good.”

A week after the release of the long-awaited musical sequel “Wicked: For Good,” Erivo performed the opening number in a burgundy floor-length coat with a matching turtleneck and hat.

“This is the most amazing experience and the most amazing feeling,” Erivo told Guthrie and Kotb after the performance about the release of “Wicked: For Good” and his bestselling new memoir, “Simply More.”

As polar vortex predictions progress, Arctic cold waves are expected in the United States as well.

0

Some forecasters say a complex dance involving the polar vortex could send some of the most extreme cold air on Earth into the United States.

play

Although meteorologists have not yet issued specific forecasts, there is a growing consensus that some parts of the United States will have a frigid December.

The National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center says the northern and northeastern United States are most likely to experience colder-than-normal conditions, but some forecasters say a complex dance involving the polar vortex could bring some of the most extreme cold air on Earth to the United States.

“In my opinion, the cold weather in the first week of December will be the appetizer and the main course will be in mid-December,” climatologist Judah Cohen, a research associate at MIT, said in an email to USA TODAY.

In fact, Cohen’s computer model predicts that “the most likely frigid region on Earth, which we can confidently claim to be the best in the world, will stretch from the Canadian Plains to the East Coast of the United States during the third week of December.”

When it comes to snow, this is still a wild card as the weather systems that produce snow are typically unpredictable more than a few days in advance. Suffice it to say that the presence of cold air is half the battle.

Is the polar vortex on hold?

Weather Trader meteorologist Ryan Maue said in a post on Substack that a major “polar vortex” of very cold air will remain largely confined to Canada for the next seven to 10 days. Maue will continue to monitor the risk of polar vortex penetration at 48 degrees north latitude until December.

In fact, a complex dance of large-scale weather patterns far above our heads, including the infamous polar vortex and a phenomenon known as “sudden stratospheric warming,” will determine the strength and duration of cold air in the United States in December, Cohen said. But, he admitted, “I’m conflicted about what’s going on in the polar vortex.”

How cold will it get?

Although the most extreme cold temperatures won’t arrive until late December, widespread and sustained below-normal temperatures for this time of year are expected across a wide area from the western High Plains to the East Coast, with near-normal conditions in the southeastern states and warmer temperatures in Florida, the National Weather Service said.

The coldest extremes in terms of both highs and lows are expected in the Midwest on Monday, Dec. 1 and Tuesday, Dec. 2, with highs expected to remain in the teens to mid-20s over many of these regions, with lows reaching the 0s as far as northern Missouri and northern Illinois by Monday morning as an arctic air mass establishes over the region.

The National Weather Service said there is a good chance nighttime lows will dip below freezing from eastern Montana to North Dakota.

How edge AI medical devices work in cochlear implants

0

The next frontier for edge AI medical devices is not in wearables or bedside monitors, but inside the human body itself. Cochlear’s newly launched Nucleus Nexa System is the first cochlear implant that can run machine learning algorithms, store personalized data on-device, and receive over-the-air firmware updates to improve AI models over time while managing extreme power constraints.

For AI practitioners, the technical challenges are staggering. We build a decision tree model that classifies five different auditory environments in real time, optimize it to run on minimal power budget devices that need to last for decades, and do it all while directly interfacing with human neural tissue.

Combining decision trees and ultra-low power computing

At the core of the system’s intelligence is SCAN 2, an environmental classifier that analyzes incoming audio and classifies it as speech, speech in noise, noise, music, or quiet.

“These classifications are fed into a decision tree, which is a type of machine learning model,” explains Cochlear Global CTO Jan Janssen in an exclusive interview. AI news. “This decision is used to adjust the audio processing settings to suit the situation, which adjusts the electrical signals sent to the implant.”

This model runs on an external sound processor, and here’s where it gets interesting. The implant itself participates in intelligence through dynamic power management. Data and power are interleaved between the processor and the implant via an enhanced RF link, allowing the chipset to optimize power efficiency based on the ML model’s environmental classification.

This is more than just smart power management. Edge AI medical devices solve one of the toughest problems in embedded computing. In other words, how do you keep a device running for 40+ years if you can’t replace the battery?

spatial intelligence layer

Beyond environmental classification, the system employs ForwardFocus, a spatial noise algorithm that uses input from two omnidirectional microphones to create a spatial pattern of targets and noise. The algorithm assumes that the target signal comes from the front and the noise comes from the sides or back, and applies spatial filtering to attenuate background interference.

What makes this interesting from an AI perspective is the automation layer. ForwardFocus can operate autonomously and take the cognitive load off users navigating complex auditory scenes. The decision to enable spatial filtering is made algorithmically based on environmental analysis and does not require any user intervention.

Upgradeability: A Paradigm Shift in Medical Device AI

The breakthrough that distinguishes this from previous generations of implants is the upgradable firmware of the implanted device itself. Historically, once a cochlear implant was surgically placed, its function was frozen. New signal processing algorithms, improved ML models, better noise reduction – none of this will benefit existing patients.

Jan Janssen, Chief Technology Officer, Cochlear Limited

The Nucleus Nexa implant changes that equation. Audiologists can use Cochlear’s proprietary short-range RF link to deliver firmware updates to the implant via an external processor. Security relies on physical constraints combined with protocol-level safeguards. This means they have limited transmission range and low power, requiring close proximity during updates.

“With smart implants, we actually keep a copy (of the user’s personalized auditory map) on the implant,” Janssen explained. “If you lose this (external processor), we will send you a blank processor and we will put it on and get the maps from the implant.”

The implant stores up to four unique maps in internal memory. From an AI deployment perspective, this solves a key challenge: how to maintain personalized model parameters when hardware components fail or are replaced.

From decision trees to deep neural networks

The current implementation of Cochlear uses a decision tree model for environmental classification. This is a practical choice considering the power constraints and interpretability requirements of medical devices. But Janssen outlined where the technology is heading. “Artificial intelligence through deep neural networks, a complex form of machine learning, could further improve hearing in noisy situations in the future.”

The company is also exploring AI applications beyond signal processing. “Cochlear is exploring the use of artificial intelligence and connectivity to automate routine testing and reduce lifelong healthcare costs,” Janssen said.

This represents a broader trajectory for edge AI medical devices, from reactive signal processing to predictive health monitoring, from manual clinical adjustments to autonomous optimization.

Edge AI constraint problem

What makes this deployment attractive from an ML engineering perspective is the constraints stack.

force: Devices must operate for decades with minimal energy, and despite continuous audio processing and wireless transmission, battery life is measured in one full day.

Latency: Audio processing occurs in real time with imperceptible delays. Users cannot tolerate delays between audio and neural stimulation.

safety: This is a life-threatening medical device that directly stimulates nervous tissue. Model failure is not only an inconvenience, but also affects the quality of life.

Upgradability: The implant should support model improvements for more than 40 years without replacing the hardware.

privacy: Medical data processing occurs on-device, and Cochlear applies strict anonymization before the data is input into its Real-World Evidence program for model training across a dataset of more than 500,000 patients.

These constraints force architectural decisions you don’t face when deploying ML models in the cloud or on smartphones. Every milliwatt counts. All algorithms must be validated for medical safety. All firmware updates should be completely prevented.

Beyond Bluetooth: The future of connected implants

Looking ahead, Cochlear is implementing Bluetooth LE audio and Auracast broadcast audio capabilities, both of which will require future implant firmware updates. These protocols provide better sound quality than traditional Bluetooth while reducing power consumption, but more importantly, they position the implant as a node in a broader listening assistance network.

Auracast broadcast audio allows you to connect directly to audio streams in public places, airports, and gyms, transforming your implant from an isolated medical device to a connected edge AI medical device that participates in an ambient computing environment.

Long-term visions include fully implantable devices with integrated microphones and batteries, completely eliminating external components. At that point, we’re talking about fully autonomous AI systems operating within the human body, making adjustments to the environment, optimizing power, streaming connectivity, and more without user intervention.

Medical device AI blueprint

Cochlear’s implementation provides a blueprint for edge AI medical devices that face similar constraints. That means starting with interpretable models like decision trees, aggressively optimizing power consumption, building in upgradeability from day one, and designing for a 40-year time horizon rather than the typical 2-3 year cycle of typical consumer devices.

As Janssen pointed out, the smart implants being released today “are actually the first step toward even smarter implants.” For an industry built on rapid iteration and continuous adoption, adapting to a 10-year product lifecycle while maintaining advances in AI presents an interesting engineering challenge.

The question is not whether AI will transform medical devices. Cochlear’s implementation proves that AI is already transforming. The question is how quickly other manufacturers can solve the constraint problem and bring similar intelligent systems to market.

For the 546 million people with hearing loss in the Western Pacific alone, the pace of innovation will determine whether AI in healthcare remains a prototype or the standard of care.
