Don’t know what to put on your young person’s gift list? They want money

postscript. A new survey from Wells Fargo shows that young people on their holiday gift lists want money or gift cards instead of physical gifts, but they feel uncomfortable asking.

A year-end gift survey of more than 2,000 people found that 45% of Gen Z and 42% of Millennials prefer digital payments, compared to 27% of Gen X and 10% of baby boomers. USA TODAY exclusively published the study for the first time.

“I feel like we’re a little influenced by our parents’ generation in the sense that we’re taught that[asking for money]is bad,” Steve Selfridge, director of product management at Wells Fargo, told USA TODAY. However, when I asked young relatives in their teens to 20s to answer honestly, they said, “They want money because they can do whatever they want with money.”

Physical gifts remain the most popular presents

According to Selfridge, when giving money, there is a slight disconnect between the emotions of the giver and the receiver.

Giving a physical gift remains the most popular, with 65% of those surveyed saying they prefer to give a physical gift and 55% prefer receiving a physical gift. 54% of people prefer to give gift cards and 56% of people prefer to receive gift cards.

But when it comes to money in cash or digital form, that number drops a bit, with 34% of people preferring to give cash or a check and 18% prefer to give digital payments like Zelle, Venmo, PayPal, and CashApp. Among gift recipients, 48% said they would prefer to receive cash or check, and 29% said they would prefer to pay digitally.

There are some differences between generations of gift givers. 32% of Gen Z and 28% of Millennials are willing to give digital cash gifts, compared to 11% of Gen X and 7% of Baby Boomers.

It’s embarrassing to ask for money as a gift.

Despite the desire to give and receive money as a gift, both people still feel awkward.

More than half (57%) of gift givers said that sending digital cash “makes it feel impersonal, like you didn’t put any effort into the gift,” and 49% of recipients strongly agreed that “I’m happy to receive digital cash as a gift, but it feels weird to tell the gift giver that.”

Selfridge says it’s very difficult to tell someone if they can actually use the money or if they just want it as a gift.

Still, 65% of adults surveyed agreed that they appreciate receiving a digital cash gift because it gives them the freedom to choose what they really want, and 65% also agreed that receiving a digital cash gift is convenient because they don’t have to worry about wrapping, mailing, or shipping the gift.

Roughly one in three, or 36%, agreed that they would appreciate receiving a digital gift because they don’t like most physical gifts they receive during the holidays, and 32% said they would like to give money digitally as a gift, but aren’t sure if it would be socially acceptable.

A Texas military obstetrician and gynecologist under investigation for secretly videotaping and sexually exploiting patients has been indicted on charges including “obscene recording” and “acts unbecoming of an officer” involving 44 alleged victims, the Army announced on December 9.

The Army indicted Maj. Blaine McGraw on four charges and 61 “specifications” (military term for charges), 54 of which were related to “obscene” recordings, according to a press release. He is also accused of disobedience to superiors and issuing false public statements.

Army officials on Oct. 17 launched an internal investigation into a gynecologist at Fort Hood, Texas, after a military husband reported secretly filming his wife during an exam. McGraw was suspended from medical treatment at Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center the same day. Since then, the Army has contacted at least 1,400 of McGraw’s former patients, Army spokesman Kamil Starkoper said.

The charges involve 44 alleged victims and incidents that occurred between January 1 and December 1 of this year, according to a press release.

Most of the incidents involved female patients who saw McGraw in his clinic, the Army said. McGraw is also accused of recording a person who was not his patient “in a private residence off-duty.”

McGraw also faces a civil lawsuit filed by a woman who claims he used his position to “sexually exploit, manipulate and secretly record women under his control,” according to court documents. Her lawsuit also accuses the military of failing to stop McGraw despite multiple complaints about him, including during his past stint at Tripler Army Medical Center in Hawaii.

McGraw is being held in the Bell County Jail. He was placed in pre-trial confinement on December 2 for violating the “conditions of freedom” set by the military commander, the army announced on December 4.

Fort Hood, about 110 miles north of Austin, is the third largest military base in the United States.

Shortage of Pell Grants at risk of depletion, which could impact student funding

0

play

Funding for yet another government program is on the verge of drying up, potentially making higher education even more unaffordable for millions of Americans, according to a study by the nonprofit Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget.

The Congressional Budget Office predicted in January that Pell grants, which help pay for college for about 7 million low- and moderate-income students annually, will run out in fiscal year 2025, or the 2025-26 school year. CBO had warned that the hole reached $2.7 billion that year and could grow to nearly $10 billion by the end of fiscal year 2026.

President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” injected $10.5 billion into the program at once, but that will only slow its depletion rather than solve the problem, nonprofits said.

The cash infusion “helped Mr. Pell avoid an immediate crisis and provided a temporary buffer,” the nonprofit said. “However, this one-time fix will only delay reserve depletion by approximately two years, as program costs are expected to exceed funding by $6 billion to $11 billion each year going forward.”

This is much sooner than Social Security funds run out in 2034 or Medicare runs out in 2033.

Why is there a lack of Pell Grant funding?

Pell grants are funded by both mandatory and discretionary spending. The discretionary portion is set annually by Congress through the budget process.

Because Congress allocates funds months in advance, initial estimates can be too high, creating a surplus, or too low, creating a shortfall, relative to the number of students who actually apply and qualify each year.

Most recently, enrollment has increased more than CBO predicted, and changes to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid have increased the number of students eligible for Pell Grants. In June 2024, CBO expected enrollment to decline for the 2024-25 school year due to the chaotic FAFSA rollout. Instead, enrollment increased and will continue to increase from 2025 to 2026, the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center said.

In addition, Congress expanded Pell eligibility to the Short-Term Workforce Program while giving the program one-time enhancements.

“While proponents argue it will help workers qualify for in-demand jobs, it comes at a financial cost,” the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget said. CBO estimates that the initiative, called “Workforce Pell,” will increase program costs by approximately $2 billion over the next 10 years.

The committee estimates that the actual cost of Pell staff could be significantly higher, approximately $6 billion or more, depending on recruitment rates, how states and agencies implement new programs, and how the Department of Education interprets and enforces accountability measures.

“History has shown that when new qualifications are created, enrollment often exceeds initial expectations,” the commission said.

The committee estimates that the Pell Grant program faces a shortfall of $61 billion to $97 billion over 10 years.

What does the shortage mean for students?

Experts say students are at risk of losing financial aid if the Pell Grant program runs out of money.

“Pell shortfalls will only be recognized for one year, after which the award will be automatically reduced to zero out the cumulative shortfall,” the committee said. “Without swift action, Pell Grant program benefits will be significantly reduced.”

When Pell Grants faced a shortfall in 2011, Congress cut program costs by more than $50 billion over the next decade, according to the Institute for College Access and Success, a nonprofit focused on making education affordable. As a result, students are no longer able to use Pell funds for summer courses. The lifetime Pell limit was reduced from 9 years or 18 semesters to 6 years or 12 semesters. And millions of students immediately lost their Pell eligibility.

How can the government increase funding for Pell Grants?

In April, the House Education and Labor Committee proposed tightening eligibility for Pell Grants to save money. Some of the proposals include increasing the number of credits needed each year to be considered a full-time student, eliminating students who attend school less than half-time, and reducing bonuses by including overseas earnings when calculating eligibility. If these proposals had passed, the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget estimates that at least $40 billion would have been saved.

The committee said the government could also consider further student loan reform, lower higher education tax credit costs, and changes to non-education spending and revenue. He also said the Department of Education needs to control costs with strict accountability in the new Workforce Pell program.

Others have suggested moving Pell Grants to mandatory full funding each year and removing the discretionary portion to ensure the program’s coffers are always full.

“The only way to completely eliminate this yearly uncertainty is to change the Pell Program to be fully funded by the mandated side of the budget,” the Institute for University Access and Success said. “This transition eliminates the need for annual expenditures and automatically adjusts program funding based on participant changes.”

Serena Williams wants you to join this longevity trend

0

When it comes to health, Serena Williams’ top word is “longevity.”

The 44-year-old tennis star opened up about her experience with GLP-1 drugs in August after partnering with healthcare company Ro. She is also partnering with Abbott’s Lingo, a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) that tracks glucose in interstitial fluid.

After quitting tennis, she became obsessed with healthy eating and living. She has been using Lingo since its launch in the US in September 2024. Tracking my health data has helped me make more informed food choices and forget about the word “diet.”

More than 80% of people with prediabetes don’t know they have diabetes because they often have no symptoms. However, it is very common. More than one in three adults in the United States has prediabetes. Although prediabetes can be reversed, complications of diabetes are usually not reversible, so prevention and appropriate management are essential.

This is an issue that hits close to home for Williams, who has a family history of diabetes. Lingo’s mission is to help people understand how their bodies respond to different dietary choices. This may reveal early signs that are worth paying attention to.

CGM for non-diabetics is gaining momentum as a new wellness trend, but not everyone in the health field is so bullish about the prospects for CGM for everyone. But Williams says preventative medicine is all about finding balance, even if you’re closer to one end of the spectrum.

“Are you kidding me? I’m unbalanced. I’m definitely an extremist,” Williams said by phone from Florida. “But I want what’s best for me, and I think other people do too.”

She and her husband, Alexis Ohanian (an investor in Ro), have two children, Olympia, 7, and Adira, 2, and she wants to keep them as healthy as possible.

“Who wouldn’t want to live longer? After all, that’s what it’s all about,” she added.

What is CGM?

A CGM is a small sensor placed under the skin on your arm that sends data to your smartphone and provides insight into your blood sugar levels. This is a tool that diabetics may use and can also be connected to an insulin pump (Lingo is not used to manage diseases including diabetes and cannot be connected to an insulin pump).

Some nutrition experts say CGMs may be beneficial for non-diabetics by encouraging them to make healthier food choices and prevent chronic disease. However, some people with diabetes feel that this health trend trivializes their experience, especially since many patients do not have access to these life-saving devices due to cost.

Dr. Robert Schmerling, a senior faculty editor at Harvard Health Publishing at Harvard Medical School, previously told USA TODAY that he believes continuous glucose monitoring is marketing ahead of science. For example, he says, research doesn’t support CGM being as effective if you don’t have diabetes.

But people like Williams who use CGMs may still find them valuable. Some CGM users who are not diabetic are now aware that they are experiencing hypoglycemia or symptoms of hypoglycemia and are able to receive appropriate treatment sooner.

Jameela Jamil slams Serena Williams over weight loss drug ad

Serena Williams is under fire after a partnership promoting the GLP-1 weight loss drug, with actor and activist Jameela Jamil leading the backlash.

Unbranded – Entertainment

How GLP-1 and Lingo fit into Williams’ overall health picture

When announcing her partnership with Law, Williams revealed that she lost 31 pounds using the GLP-1 drug Zepbound. Zepbound is a type of drug typically prescribed for diabetes and is now also used for weight management.

“My story about Ro and GLP-1 is that I did everything to get healthy, but I never got there,” she explains. She believes fad diets are a thing of the past, given the technology people now have access to.

“I think fad diets were great because that was the only thing available at the time,” she says. “Everyone was still trying their best to stay healthy, but this (Lingo) is something that actually works. You can make decisions in real time.” The Lingo app also sends her reminders to take a walk or do 10 squats.

She says that taking GLP-1 has made her feel better than ever and that using Lingo has been a great help in monitoring her health throughout this journey.

“Every kind of thing has its positives and negatives, and you have to decide if that’s what you want,” she says.

“My life was all about health”

Williams, who won 23 Grand Slam titles, spent her life optimizing her performance. And while she’s bringing that mindset to motherhood, part of the focus has shifted to her child’s nutrition.

“As athletes, health is our life,” she says. “And as a mom, I pay close attention to how I prepare my meals.”

Williams cooks for her children five to six days a week and wants to teach them healthy eating habits.

“Lingo helped me understand what I was eating,” she added. “I just take that education throughout my life and transfer it to what I’m learning for my kids.”

Oreo has done it all: Peeps, watermelons, and even jelly donuts. But the popular cookie brand is reaching a new customer base with its latest product.

Mondelez introduced Oreo Zero Sugar Cookies on Tuesday, December 9th. Oreos, which will be released in January 2026, will feature a slightly new design with “zero sugar” pressed into the cookie.

Mondelēz spent nearly four years creating sugar-free treats to give consumers the classic Oreo experience they enjoy in cookies, according to a statement from the brand obtained by USA TODAY.

Here’s what you need to know to get sugar-free cookies.

When will sugar-free Oreos be available?

Starting in January 2026, Original Zero Sugar Oreos and Double Stuff Zero Sugar Oreos will be available at retail stores nationwide, according to a news release. Sugar-free options will be available permanently, according to a news release.

Customers can purchase cookies early on the Oreo website. A bag of 20 cookies costs $5.29.

What are unsweetened Oreos made of?

According to Oreo’s website, sugar-free Oreo cookies are sweetened with maltitol (a sugar alcohol), polydextrose (a complex carbohydrate made from glucose), sucralose (a zero-calorie sugar substitute), and Ace-K (a zero-calorie artificial sweetener). This cookie does not contain aspartame, a common artificial sweetener that has recently been linked to a possible cancer-causing carcinogen.

According to the brand’s website, one unsweetened Oreo has about 45 calories. For comparison, a regular Oreo cookie has about 53 calories.

Will Maria Corina Machado arrive in Oslo? Nobel Prize warns of ‘challenging’ travel

0

play

As if the Norwegian winter had spread a shroud of mystery over the city, the Nobel Institute has confirmed that a scheduled press conference with 2025 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Colina Machado was abruptly canceled after a delay of several hours, Reuters reports.

With less than a day to go until the official ceremony, the whereabouts of Venezuela’s opposition leader remain unknown, raising questions, fears and speculation among diplomats, activists and Venezuelan exiles who have already begun arriving in the Norwegian capital.

Machado, 58, faces a 10-year ban from leaving Venezuela, a country that has become politically overshadowed since his victory in an opposition primary in 2023. He has been living in hiding since August 2024. His journey to Oslo, if it is even underway at all, will be “extremely difficult”, as the Nobel Institute itself put it, and is almost a race against time to get to the world stage to amplify Venezuela’s democratic crisis.

Why was Maria Colina Machado’s conference canceled?

The Nobel Institute has scheduled a traditional meeting with the press at noon on Tuesday, a ceremony that usually serves as a prelude to the Peace Prize. However, the event was initially postponed without explanation and then officially canceled three hours later.

Christian Berg Haabviken, director of the institute and permanent secretary of the commission, asserted that there was no confirmation of Machado’s current whereabouts. “We know he wants to come and is on his way, but that’s all we know,” he told public broadcaster NRK. The simple, honest words revealed the fragility of this moment.

The institute said in a statement that Machado himself had explained in a recent interview that a visit to Oslo would be extremely complicated given the intensified persecution and security operations in Venezuela after the 2024 elections. Her team did not immediately respond to questions about her whereabouts or her eventual arrival in Norway.

Will Machado be able to attend the Nobel Peace Ceremony?

The ceremony is scheduled for this Wednesday at 1pm (12:00 GMT) at Oslo City Hall and will be attended by King Harald, Queen Sonya, and at least four Latin American heads of state, including Javier Millay (Argentina) and Daniel Novoa (Ecuador). The chair made for Machado has now become a symbol of anxiety and resistance.

Their final appearance in Oslo, if they happen, would be one of the most notable acts of defiance against the regime of Nicolas Maduro. Since winning the Nobel Prize in October, Machado has dedicated part of his award to former President Donald Trump, and has aligned himself with Trump over his alleged ties to Chavista criminal networks.

Meanwhile, Venezuela is experiencing a political situation marked by arrests, forced exile, and disputes over the results of the July 28, 2024 elections, whose official numbers have been rejected by international observers. Machado went into hiding after a spate of arrests against opposition leaders.

What does this Nobel Prize mean for Venezuela and the U.S. diaspora?

The Norwegian committee gave Machado the award for his “sustained struggle for democratic transition” in a country where pre- and post-election repression has been widely documented. For the Venezuelan diaspora in the United States, particularly communities in Florida, Texas and New York, the Nobel Prize has become a sign of international recognition amid years of crisis.

This recognition also reinforces the need to continue documenting abuse, seek legal assistance, and maintain community support networks for families affected by detention, separation, or complex immigration procedures. Organizations such as Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and Venezuelan NGOs have published free guides and resources to help those seeking aid from abroad.

For many, this Wednesday’s ceremony will be more than just a ceremonial act. It will serve as a reminder that Venezuela’s fight for democratic freedom continues, even if its protagonists are unable to physically take the stage.

When is the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize ceremony?

The Nobel Peace Prize ceremony will be held on Wednesday, December 11th at 1pm local time in Oslo (12pm GMT). The event will be held at the historic Oslo City Hall, the iconic space where the world’s most important peace awards are awarded each year.

Where will the ceremony take place?

The official ceremony will take place at Oslo City Hall, one of Norway’s most famous buildings and the traditional venue for the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony. The venue faces Oslo Bay and is known for its main hall, which is decorated with murals that tell the story of the country’s social and political history.

Who will host the Nobel Peace Ceremony?

The ceremony will be chaired by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, chaired by its Chairman and Permanent Secretary Christian Berg Halbviken, who will introduce the winners and conduct the official program.

Additionally, the following institutions will be in attendance as hosts:

This isn’t a traditional “host” like a TV awards show. The Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony is conducted by the Norwegian Committee, and the Royal Family supports its ceremonial role.

Mavericks frontman dies at age 60

0

Raul Malo, the genre-blending visionary and frontman of The Mavericks, has died. He was 60 years old.

Maro’s wife, Betty Maro, posted on social media: “A loving man…a father of our boys…a devoted son and brother…and a friend to many have received angel wings.” “He has been called to perform another gig – this time in the air – and is flying high like an eagle.”

Malo, whose velvety baritone and versatile songwriting infused country music with Latin and rock sensibilities for decades, died on Monday, Dec. 8, after a year and a half battle with cancer.

“No one personified life and love, joy and passion, family, friends, music and adventure more than our beloved Raul,” his wife wrote. “Right now, he looks down on us with all that heaven allows, lighting the way and reminding us to savor every moment. Dino, Victor, Max, and I, and our entire family, thank you for your love and support through all of this. We felt it all.”

“In Raul’s own words, ‘Thank you so much,'” she continued.

Malo was a Cuban-American artist best known as the singer, guitarist, and songwriter for the Grammy Award-winning group The Mavericks. The country-Latin-rock band recorded and toured together for more than 30 years, mixing elements of neo-traditional country with the horns and beats of Latin music and the rollicking rock’n’roll.

Malo’s hits include “Here Comes the Rain,” “What A Crying Shame,” “Dance The Night Away,” “Back In Your Arms Again,” “All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down,” and Rick Trevino’s 2003 song “In My Dreams,” which he helped write and produce.

Mavericks and Raul Maro made history together

He was born Raul Joaquín Martínez Maro Jr. in Miami in 1965 to middle-class Cuban parents. Maro and drummer Paul Deakin formed The Mavericks in 1989. Their band became famous in the city’s music scene for their dancey rhythms and soothing sounds.

After releasing independent albums, The Mavericks signed with MCA Nashville in 1991. The group took root in Nashville and released four albums, including their 1992 debut, “From Hell to Paradise,” which contained some of Malo’s most influential lyrics.

The album’s title track is inspired by Malo’s aunt, who was imprisoned in Cuba for protesting against the Castro regime, and evokes the resilience of refugees.

“From hell to paradise / There’s always a price to pay,” Malo sings. “This 90-mile journey/took 30 years/They tried to take forever/What was never theirs.”

The remaining members of the Mavericks mourned Maro in posts on Instagram.

“Anyone who had the pleasure of being in Raul’s orbit knew that he was a force of humanity and possessed an infectious energy,” they wrote. “Through a more than 30-year career that has entertained millions of people around the world, his outstanding creative contributions and unparalleled generational talent have created multicultural American music that reaches far beyond the continental United States.”

The band praised “his strong songwriting and musical talent,” “his lifelong commitment to preserving the multilingual American musical repertoire,” and “his staunch advocacy for music education.”

The band wrote, “Even though his earthly body is gone, Raul’s spirit will live on forever in Heaven and here on Earth through the music, joy, and light he created.” “His contributions to American and Latin music will remain forever, as his songs and voice touched fans and fellow artists around the world.”

After the Mavericks disbanded in 2000, Malo pursued a solo career, releasing nine full-length solo projects. He also played with Los Super Seven, a Grammy Award-winning Latin American collective. The Mavericks reunited in 2012 and have been touring and recording extensively ever since.

In 2018, they won a Grammy Award in the Americana Music category for their album Brand New Day. With a lineup of Maro, Deakin, keyboardist Jerry Dale McFadden, and guitarist Eddie Perez, the group released their latest record, Moon & Stars, in 2024.

“We were able to get labeled ‘alternative country’ because of the most country records we ever made. I think that’s probably how we got labeled ‘Americana’ later on. We’ve always had some sort of label,” Malo said in 2024.

“We always have to be storytellers that are a little bit ahead of the curve in Nashville.”

Raul Malo’s cause of death: battle with cancer worsened before death

After the release of 2024, Malo shared with fans that doctors discovered a cancerous spot in his digestive system.

“We have an amazing team of doctors and medical professionals here in Nashville,” he said in a statement, adding that he will keep fans updated during his treatment and that his health status could affect his live show schedule.

“You’ve been by our side through 35 crazy years of music, shows, breakups, and reunions. We’ve made it through the pandemic together, and we’ll get through this, just like everything else.”

He encouraged his fellow men to see their doctors regularly.

“Modern medicine tells us that with proper treatment, there is a very good chance of survival for this type of cancer, but you won’t know unless you get tested. It’s important to get tested for the sake of your family, your neighbors, and your loved ones.”

After undergoing surgery and chemotherapy for a liver tumor, Maro later revealed that the cancer had progressed to leptomeningitis. Leptomeningeal disease is a complication of advanced cancer in which fluid surrounds the brain and spinal cord.

In September, Maro and the band announced they were canceling all upcoming shows, including a two-night tribute show on December 5th and 6th. The tribute concert, which featured appearances by Jamey Johnson, Marty Stewart, Patti Griffin, Nikki Lane and more, celebrated Malo’s 35-year career and impact on the Nashville music scene.

“From Johnny Cash to Elvis to Willie Nelson and beyond, music simply seeks the power to communicate and connect with as many people as possible,” Malo said in 2024.

“If people feel an all-encompassing joy when they listen to The Mavericks’ music, then I’ve done my job.”

Raul Malo is survived by his wife, Betty Malo, and three sons, Dino, Victor, and Max.

It’s official. Biden’s signature student loan forgiveness plan is over.

The Trump administration announced a joint settlement ending Biden’s flagship student debt relief program, ending more than a year of legal limbo for borrowers.

play

WASHINGTON – It’s official: Former President Joe Biden’s signature student loan forgiveness plan is over. And millions of borrowers are on the verge of enrolling in another program.

On December 9, the Federal Ministry of Education announced a draft legal agreement aimed at abolishing the program known as the Savings for Valuable Education (SAVE) scheme. The agency announced in March 2024 that it had reached a settlement with several red states that had filed suit seeking to halt SAVE.

If approved by the court, the settlement would require new borrowers to enroll in the SAVE program. The program, with monthly charges based on a borrower’s income, has been hailed by the Biden administration as the most affordable student loan repayment option in history. The department also plans to deny pending SAVE applications and move current borrowers to alternative repayment plans.

The settlement marks the death knell for one of Biden’s major education policy achievements, ending a legal logjam that has left more than 7 million SAVE borrowers stuck for more than a year and a half. These borrowers have been administratively suspended from making payments since June last year. Interest on their loans resumed in August this year.

The agreement also represents what the Trump administration called “the final nail in the coffin” for Biden’s efforts to provide about $200 billion in student loan relief to more than 5 million indebted Americans. Specifically, through the SAVE program, former President Donald Trump greenlit nearly $5.5 billion in student loan repayments to nearly 500,000 SAVE borrowers. SAVE also lowered monthly payments to $0 for many borrowers.

In a statement, Education Undersecretary Nicholas Kent criticized the debt relief made possible by Biden as an attempt to score “a political victory to prop up a failed administration.”

“The Trump administration is righting this wrong and putting an end to this deceptive scheme.” “The law is clear: If you take out a loan, you have to pay it back.”

Protect Borrowers, an advocacy group for people with student debt, said the settlement was a “backroom deal” that amounted to “pure surrender.”

“The real story here is relentless right-wing pressure to raise costs for working people with student debt,” Persis Yu, the group’s deputy executive director, said in a statement.

The Department of Education said SAVE borrowers have “limited time” to choose a new repayment plan, but they can move to other income-based programs. The agency encouraged affected Americans to use a tool on the federal student aid website to estimate their new monthly payments.

Shainelle Jones replaces Hoda Kotb on ‘Jenna & Friends’

Nearly a year after Hoda Kotb bid a tearful farewell to NBC’s “Today,” Sheinelle Jones will fill Kotb’s role at the desk alongside Jenna Bush Hager during the morning show’s third hour.

play

Almost a year later, Jenna Bush Hager will officially have a new partner in crime on the fourth hour of the “Today” show.

Shainelle Jones was announced on Tuesday, Dec. 9, as the new co-anchor of the show, which was known as “Today with Hoda and Jenna” until Hoda Kotb left the show in January.

“Today with Jenna and Sheinelle” debuts Monday, Jan. 12.

Bush Hager got emotional in just a few words he announced at the beginning of Tuesday’s show.

“Today I am so happy to announce that I have found my forever friend. We will be starting a brand new journey in January,” she said. “I couldn’t be more excited to share this person with you.”

Bush Hager described Jones as an “extraordinary broadcaster” who “really embodies the essence of this program.”

Jones, 47, co-hosted “Third Hour Today” along with forecaster Al Roker, meteorologist Dylan Dryer and Savannah Guthrie’s main hour co-anchor Craig Melvin.

Now she’s starting a new journey with Bush Hager.

Shainelle Jones says her new job on Today feels ‘sacred’

In a pre-recorded video package announcing Jones’ hiring, Bush Hager noted that he had served as a rotating temporary co-host, joking that he had “sixty first dates” and now “can’t wait to sit next to one of these beautiful souls.”

Jones, who announced her husband’s death from brain cancer in May, sat down with Bush Hager at her desk to open up about her difficult year.

“This time a year ago was a difficult time for me,” she said. “A year ago at this time, I decided I should step back and be with my husband. We were fighting, and you couldn’t write this script.”

When Jones told her children the news of her new job, she added, “There was so much joy at home and we needed that joy.”

“When I got back from vacation, I talked about fighting for my joy,” she said. “It feels like this. It feels divine.”

Jones also described Bush Hager as “not my friend, but my sister.”

Where was Sheinelle Jones during her absence from the ‘Today’ show?

The announcement comes after Jones took several months off from the “Today” show after her husband of 17 years, Uche Ojie, died of an aggressive brain tumor in May. Jones left the program in December 2024 and returned in September.

In a statement to Today viewers in January, Jones said she was “taking time to deal with the health issues of my family.” She added, “I never forget how lucky I am to have the support of all of you as well as my Today show family. Your kindness means so much to me.”

Jenna Bush Hager joins top-notch cast before Sheinelle Jones

Since Kotb’s departure, Bush Hager has briefly hosted the fourth hour, dubbed “Jenna & Friends,” with a rotating cast of celebrities serving as co-hosts.

Over the past few months, she’s hosted a cast of A-listers and Hollywood’s biggest names, including Dwyane Wade, Ciara, Scarlett Johansen, Olivia Munn, Brooke Shields, Taraji P. Henson, Eva Longoria, Michelle Buteau, and Regina Hall.

Comedian Heather McMahan, singer Wynonna Judd, E! News host Justin Sylvester and “Saturday Night Live” cast members Chloe Fineman, Amy Poehler, Cheri Oteri, Mikey Day and Ana Gasteyer all took turns sitting in the left seat. “The Voice” judge Kelsea Ballerini and Little Big Town member Kimberly Schlapman also attended the show.

Bush Hager’s husband Henry Hager, who works at a private equity firm, and her fraternal twin sister Barbara Pierce Bush also co-hosted the show as guests. Today stars Guthrie, Willie Geist and Donna Farizan also came forward to help.

Why did Hoda Kotb leave ‘Today’?

In October, Kotub opened up to USA TODAY about his decision to leave “Today,” saying he didn’t feel it was a risk or a loss.

“Oddly enough, at that point, it was the only option for me,” she said. “I have everything I want. I’m not jeopardizing anything. I have the love of my family. I have great colleagues who will remain friends forever. I have that.”

She continued: “So I didn’t feel like, ‘What am I missing out on?’

She said goodbye to the “Today” show in a tearful finale on Jan. 10, featuring her favorite singer Walker Hayes, “CBS Morning” veteran Gayle King and former 4th Hour co-host Kathie Lee Gifford.

Kotb, host of the popular podcasts “Today” and “Making Space,” has an ongoing relationship with the Peacock-forward network.

When is the Powerball drawing? US jackpot is $930 million

0

play

The December cold can’t quell the Powerball fever. After one night without a jackpot, the lottery has once again ballooned to $930 million, a number that has sparked hopes, buzz, and secret plans in homes across the country. Draws with no winners add a new layer to this economic snowball, rolling, growing and captivating millions of players in the hope of luck changing their fortunes.

The moment marked a new turning point as Monday’s draw left a number without an owner. With 40 consecutive draws without a jackpot, the game approaches one of the highest jackpots of the year, a question repeated in a low voice: How much is Powerball today? What happens if I win?

What happened in the recent draw?

The following combinations were left on the table for the December 8, 2025 drawing: 8, 32, 52, 56, 64, Powerball: 23, Power Play: 2X.

Although there was no grand prize winner, there were multiple secondary prizes in various states, showing that the multiplier continues to improve the chances even though the big wins are yet to come.

Now everyone is focused on the next draw.

When will the next draw take place and how much should I bet?

Your next chance to win is this Wednesday night, December 10, 2025 at 10:59 PM ET/9:59 PM CT. The boat remains like this.

  • Estimated jackpot: $930 million
  • Cash value: $429 million

Ticket sales are picking up speed as the drawing approaches, and the final price could rise even further by Wednesday.

Will the next big winner emerge this Wednesday?

This question dominates the searches, conversations, and lines at convenience stores. Although some states with winning records (California, Florida, Tennessee, Oregon) are always listed as token bets, the truth is that winners can come from anywhere.

In 2025, there are already four jackpot winners.

Since then, the ship has continued to move on without an owner. And while the final stages of the year are increasing the chances of a new billionaire emerging by December, the math remains unrelenting.

How close are we to another historic millionaire jackpot?

Jackpots exceeding $1 billion are no longer an absolute rarity. Last 5 years:

  • 8 boats exceeded the billion mark
  • 3 in 2023
  • 2 in 2024including some of the largest prizes ever recorded.

The record still stands at Powerball’s unattainable $2.04 billion in 2022, but each accumulation this week brings the game closer to new territory.

And what are the odds?

They remain the same:

  • Powerball jackpot is 1 in 292.2 million
  • 1 in 302.6 million for Mega Millions

Lou Lefton, a Georgia Tech mathematician, recalled that the game’s rule changes made jackpots bigger and more frequent, but also harder to win. Nevertheless, collective fantasies remain part of national rituals.

10 largest jackpots in U.S. history

  1. $2.04 billion — Powerball (2022, California)
  2. $1.765 billion — Powerball (2023, California)
  3. $1.62 billion — Mega Millions (Florida, 2023)
  4. $1.586 billion — Powerball (2016; California, Florida, Tennessee)
  5. $1.537 billion — Mega Millions (2018, South Carolina)
  6. $1.35 billion — Mega Millions (2023, Maine)
  7. $1.337 billion — Mega Millions (2022, Illinois)
  8. $132.6 billion — Powerball (2024, Oregon)
  9. $1.13 billion — Mega Millions (2024, New Jersey)
  10. $1.08 billion — Powerball (2023, California)

How to play Powerball?

To play Powerball, you must purchase a $2 ticket. You can purchase it at various places such as convenience stores, gas stations, and supermarkets. In some states, you can also purchase tickets online.

Once you get your ticket, you have to choose six numbers. The Powerball is five white balls with numbers from 1 to 69 and one red ball with numbers from 1 to 26. For an additional $1, you can add a power play option. This increases the winnings for all non-jackpot prizes.

Power Play Multipliers can increase your wins by 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, or up to 10x.

If you want to choose a system, there is a quick pick option where the computer generates a random number for your ticket. To win the jackpot, you must match all five white numbers in any order, plus the red Powerball number.

Powerball drawings take place on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday nights. If no one wins the jackpot, the jackpot continues to accumulate.

Where can I buy lottery tickets?

Tickets can be purchased directly at gas stations, convenience stores and supermarkets. Some airports also sell tickets.

Pamela Anderson opens up about Liam Neeson’s romance and reveals the truth

0

play

Pamela Anderson finally reveals the naked truth.

In a new People cover story published on Tuesday, Dec. 9, the “Baywatch” star, 58, admitted that she was romantically involved with “The Naked Gun” co-star Liam Neeson, but shared that they are no longer an item.

“Just so you know, Liam and I had a brief relationship, but that was after we finished filming,” she told the magazine.

Anderson said she and Neeson spent an “intimate week” at the “Taken” actor’s New York home, and “went to dinner at a small French restaurant where he introduced me as the ‘future Mrs. Neeson.'”

However, after a “lost week” that Anderson spent together, the two “went their separate ways to work on other films” until reuniting during the promotion of “The Naked Gun” over the summer.

“We had fun,” she said, likening their relationship to “a Nancy Meyers movie.”

But ultimately, Anderson told People that she and Neeson are “better friends, to be honest,” adding that the two will “always be in each other’s lives.”

Anderson played the romantic interest of Neeson’s character in the slapstick comedy “The Naked Gun,” which was released in theaters in August. During the film’s press tour, the pair sparked romance rumors after they appeared friendly and shared a kiss on the cheek at the London premiere.

However, Neeson and Anderson remained tight-lipped about their relationship status at the time. He was asked directly if this was a topic for the “Today” show in July, but he declined to give a direct answer. “I had never met Pamela before,” Neeson said. “We met on set and realized we had great chemistry as both actors.”

Some speculated that the dating rumors were part of a PR stunt to drum up interest in the film. However, Anderson denied this in a People magazine cover story.

“I always laughed when people thought, ‘Oh, that’s a publicity stunt.’ I’m like, ‘A publicity stunt?’ This is true,” she said. “We have real feelings.”

The “Last Showgirl” actress previously denied speculation that the relationship was a stunt during a speech at the 51st Deauville American Film Festival in France in September.

“I don’t and never will engage in PR stunts,” she said. “That’s a death sentence. I’m really driven. I’m superstitious when it comes to love. And I don’t feel comfortable sharing parts of my love life with other people because, as you can see, in a media culture that’s quick to criticize and trash, it’s only built up and torn down in days, weeks, months.”

The move comes after fans expressed disappointment when Chili’s replaced its longtime cheese appetizer with a new recipe in October. But on Tuesday, Dec. 9, Skiler Beef Queso is back.

Chili’s first teased the return of the popular dip on social media in late October, just weeks after announcing a new Southwest Queso to replace Skillet Beef and White Queso on the menu.

Now, the chain is celebrating the return of Skillet Queso with a commemorative trucker hat. The lime green cap is emblazoned with the words, “I Survived the Chili Skillet Queso Situation October 2025.” Fans have a chance to win hats through social media giveaways.

For returning Skillet Queso fans, here’s how to get your hands on Chili’s new commemorative hat.

How can I get the limited edition Chili hat?

There are multiple ways to enter to win a new Chilean commemorative trucker hat:

  • Post or share a giveaway post on Chili’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/chilis)
  • Post a comment on Chili’s TikTok page (www.tiktok.com/chilisofficial) in response to the giveaway post

According to the official giveaway rules, entries are limited to 5 comments and 1 retweet, share, or save per social media user per platform, with a maximum of 6 entries per platform.

People have already started commenting on Chili’s social media posts showing why the limited edition hat is worth buying. “I loved it so much that I put it on my calendar at work and will be ordering it the day I get back. I’ve gotten so many messages saying they’re so excited!!” one Instagram commenter wrote.

“I was one of the frontrunners who insisted in every post to return this product. I believe I deserve the hat. I’ve been a loyal Chili’s customer for 23 years and have ordered Skillet Queso hundreds of times. This is the best appetizer I’ve ever had. Please Chili’s, I implore you to take the hat off to me,” another Instagram user commented on the restaurant chain’s post.

On TikTok, users posted similar messages of excitement. One TikTok user commented, “I was there the day the music went out, and tonight I’ll be there again to enjoy the most goaty appetizer ever. I’ve been trying for 25 years. I love chili. And while I’m at it, I miss the broccoli cheese soup.”

What is the giveaway schedule?

The giveaway entry period will begin on Monday, December 8th at 12:01am ET and end on December 15th at 11:59pm ET.

According to Chile’s social media accounts, 450 hats will be given away.

Republican Nancy Mace says Nancy Pelosi was a better House speaker.

0

play

Prominent Republicans this week shamed Republican leaders by claiming that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was “as effective a speaker as any Republican in this century,” arguing that the party should learn from her leadership, and claiming that the party is alienating rank-and-file members, including women.

Republican Rep. Nancy Mace, who represents South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District, which covers part of Charleston, said the problem is that voting in areas with “bipartisan supermajorities” makes it nearly impossible to pass legislation.

In a New York Times op-ed published Monday, Dec. 8, Mace wrote that he came to Congress five years ago “believing that I could make a difference for my constituents, South Carolina, and the country I love so deeply,” but found that “the House system fosters control by party leaders over accountability and performance.”

Mace, 48, will be the first Republican woman elected to Congress from the state in 2021 and criticized President Donald Trump over the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. But since then, she has become one of his closest allies.

“No one can be held accountable for inaction. So far, very little has been done,” Mace wrote in an opinion piece titled “What’s Congress’ Point?” “The obstacles to accomplishing almost anything are enough to make any member who came to Washington with noble intentions ask, ‘Why am I here?'”

Pelosi, an outspoken critic of President Trump, is a former speaker of the House of Representatives and announced her retirement in November. The staunch liberal lawmaker from San Francisco served two terms as the highest ranking lawmaker, from 2007 to 2011 and from 2019 to 2023.

In October, California state Sen. Scott Wiener, a Democrat whose district includes part of San Francisco, launched a campaign to vacate the seat. Saikat Chakrabarti, former chief of staff to progressive Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, is also vying for the position.

During Pelosi’s tenure, she led two impeachments of Trump, led a coordinated effort to convince former President Joe Biden to withdraw his bid for a second term, and pushed through the Affordable Care Act, the largest health care expansion in half a century.

“The hard truth that Republicans don’t want to hear.”

Mace, who launched his campaign for South Carolina governor on Aug. 4, said his claims about Pelosi and control of the House are “hard truths that Republicans don’t want to hear.”

Representative Ralph Norman, Attorney General Alan Wilson, Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evett, and State Sen. Josh Kimbrel are also running as Republicans in the South Carolina gubernatorial race.

“I fundamentally disagree with her (Pelosi) on nothing, but she understood what we don’t: that majorities are not permanent,” Mace wrote. “When Democrats have a majority, they push the most progressive policies possible. They contribute to the coalition that elected them while in power.”

Republicans are doing the opposite, Mace lamented.

“We gain a majority and are terrified of losing it. We pass the most moderate policies we can force conservatives to accept, and we are betraying the coalition that got us here. Pelosi has been ruthless, but things are getting worse. The current House is limited and ineffective, and the Republican leadership seems intent on replicating her unification model without her bold vision to push the policies that won her the majority.

Mace also argued that opening up the chamber would lead to the passage of more conservative legislation as well as more bipartisan legislation, adding that only 5% of bills introduced this year have received a floor vote.

Doing so, she said, would allow some of the Republican priorities to “finally get votes.”

“Common sense bipartisan measures would do the same,” Mace wrote. “The key is to do more and make sure voters understand what their representatives stand for. What we have now is a dire situation with very little accountability, transparency and results.”

New polls show an uptick due to Trump’s support. The big reasons are:

0

play

President Donald Trump’s approval rating rose several points in the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll after falling to the lowest point of his second term last month.

In a poll released on December 9th, President Trump’s approval rating was 41%, compared to 38% in a November 18th poll. The latest poll, conducted among 4,434 adults nationwide, had a margin of error of 2 percentage points in either direction. The disapproval rate was 57%.

This slight increase is at least partly due to improvements in respondents’ cost-of-living ratings, according to an analysis of Reuters polling data. The issue has come to dominate domestic politics in recent months, reaching a tipping point for the president’s party in last month’s off-year election. Democrats have won handily in several key elections, including the closely watched New York mayoral race, by running on affordable platforms.

President Trump has stepped up his efforts on the issue in response to the Republican Party’s poor performance in the Nov. 4 election and growing concerns about the 2026 midterm elections. In recent weeks, he has vowed to roll back some of the tariff hikes and combat soaring food prices.

According to Reuters, President Trump’s performance on the cost of living received an approval rating of 31%, one of the lowest popularity scores. However, this number is still up several points from last month’s survey, which was 26% in late November.

The president’s Republican base was a big boost in these latest numbers, showing a 10-point recovery in approval ratings for the president’s handling of the issue since the last Reuters/Ipsos poll in late November.

In the December poll, which was conducted over six days and ended on Monday, Dec. 8, 69% of Republicans rated President Trump favorably on the cost of living issue. Overall, 85% of Republicans said they approved of his overall performance as president. This number is up from 82% last month.

The Labor Department’s latest report, released in September, showed the inflation rate was 3% higher than a year earlier, up slightly from 2.9% in August.

OpenAI targets AI skills gap with new certification standards

0

Generative AI adoption is outpacing workforce capabilities, prompting OpenAI to target skills gaps with new certification standards.

It’s safe to say that OpenAI tools are ubiquitous, but organizations struggle to translate this usage into reliable output. To address this, OpenAI announced “AI Foundations,” a structured initiative aimed at standardizing the way employees learn and apply technology.

OpenAI’s efforts demonstrate a necessary evolution in the vendor ecosystem. This signals a departure from the “fast-track” phase of experimental deployment and a focus on verifiable capabilities. OpenAI has stated its intention to certify 10 million Americans by 2030.

Workers and employers have incentives to close the AI skills gap

The economic case for AI training and certification is rooted in wage and productivity data. Workers with AI skills earn about 50% more than workers without AI skills. However, CIOs often find that productivity gains on paper don’t materialize in reality. OpenAI says benefits “will only be realized if people have the skills to use the technology.”

Without guidance, widespread access can pose operational risks. OpenAI acknowledges that the technology is “disruptive, leaving many people unsure of which skills are most important.” By defining a standard curriculum, OpenAI aims to help organizations realize the efficiency gains promised by their software investments.

AI Foundation is delivered differently than traditional enterprise learning management system (LMS) modules. The course is located directly within ChatGPT, allowing the platform to simultaneously act as an “instructor, practice space, and feedback loop.” This integration allows learners to go beyond passively watching video content to performing real-world tasks and receiving context-aware modifications to close gaps in their AI skills.

Once you complete the program, you’ll earn a badge that certifies your “ready-to-read AI skills.” This credential serves as a stepping stone to the full OpenAI certification. To ensure these badges matter in the labor market, OpenAI collaborated with Coursera, ETS, and Credly by Pearson to validate the psychometric rigor and assessment design.

Improving AI Certification Exam Operations and Recruitment Pipeline

A consortium of large employers and public sector bodies will test the curriculum before rolling it out more widely. Pilot partners include Walmart, John Deere, Lowe’s, Boston Consulting Group, Russell Reynolds Associates, Upwork, Elevance Health, and Accenture. The Delaware Governor’s Office is also participating, indicating interest from state-level administration.

These partners span operationally demanding industries (e.g., retail, agriculture, healthcare), suggesting that this training targets core business functions rather than just technical roles. OpenAI plans to refine the course over the coming months based on data from these pilots so that it can effectively close the AI skills gap.

OpenAI’s efforts also extend to recruiting. The company is developing the OpenAI Jobs Platform, which connects certified workers and employers. Our partnership with Indeed and Upwork supports this mechanism and aims to make it easier for companies to identify candidates with verified technical expertise.

For recruiters, this offers a potential solution to the difficulty of screening for AI literacy. Standardized AI certifications have the potential to reduce reliance on self-reported skills and provide “portable evidence” of candidate growth.

Academic collaboration to develop future AI talent

While businesses have an immediate focus, OpenAI is also seeding the talent pipeline of the future. The “ChatGPT Fundamentals for Teachers” course is now available on Coursera. Three out of five teachers are already using AI tools to save time and customize teaching materials, a trend aimed at formalizing existing habits.

At the same time, a pilot with Arizona State University and the California State University System is creating an avenue for students to certify their skills before entering the job market. This ensures that the next batch of graduates arrives with the ‘ready-to-work’ credentials that corporate employers are beginning to demand.

Organizations must now decide whether to rely on vendor-provided certifications or continue to develop their own training. The involvement of companies such as Boston Consulting Group and Accenture suggests that major companies see value in standardized external benchmarks.

As OpenAI certifies millions of people and seeks to close the AI skills gap, certification badges may become a fundamental expectation for knowledge workers, much like proficiency in office suites has been for decades past.

The Hydro Jug toy sold on Amazon was recalled just before Christmas. See list.

0

play

Thousands of toys, water bottles and bedding products for infants and children sold by Amazon, Shein and other popular retailers were recently recalled as they pose serious safety risks just in time for the holiday shopping season.

These products were named in a series of recalls reported by the Consumer Product Safety Commission on Dec. 4 and were sold primarily online throughout 2025. The affected products, ranging from tablets to sports tumblers, failed to meet U.S. safety standards for issues commonly considered dangerous to children’s health, including batteries, magnets and safe sleep regulations.

Before you do your holiday shopping, check out the list of recalled children’s products here.

HyrdoJug 14oz Children’s Sports Tumbler

What is being recalled? Approximately 17,000 HydroJug brand water bottles for children are being recalled as they pose a choking hazard. The 14-ounce children’s sports tumbler bottles come in cowgirl, sports, daisy checker, dinosaur, and bow patterns and have rivets on the handles that can loosen and cause the handles to fall off, creating a choking hazard on small parts.

Why are they being recalled? As of the Dec. 4 recall notice, the company had received more than 650 reports of handle rivets coming loose, but no injuries had been reported.

Products affected: The bottom of the tumbler under the rubber boot of the water bottle has serial number 235010 or no serial number. These were sold for approximately $25 from May 2025 to June 2025 at Academy Sports, Scheels, Combined Sales Company, Gordons Ace Hardware, Bucks Ace, Kents Grocery, Basin Sports, and online at Hydrojug.com, Amazon.com, Well.ca, and iHerb.com.

What to do: Consumers with affected products should immediately stop using their tumblers and contact HydroJuge at service@thehydrojug.com to receive a free replacement lid. Customers must provide order details, shipping address, a photo of the bottom of the tumbler, and a photo of the recalled lid marked “Recalled” before it can be discarded to receive a replacement.

KTEBO Writing Tablet Toy

What is being recalled? Approximately 10,380 KTEBO branded children’s tablets are being recalled due to a battery safety issue that could lead to serious injury or death.

Why are they being recalled? Button batteries are small round batteries commonly used in toys and are known to be extremely dangerous to children and pets, who can easily swallow them and cause serious injury, internal chemical burns, or death. The screws on the affected KTEBO writing tablet toys do not comply with toy standards and may loosen, exposing the internal button battery.

Products affected: The tablets, which were recalled on December 4, were sold in sets of two and came in four color variations (pink/blue, green/yellow, orange/blue, and purple/red) and two sizes (8.5-inch and 10-inch), and included a color-matched stylus. These were sold on Amazon.com from September 2025 to October 2025 for $8 to $30.

What to do: Customers should immediately stop using the recalled tablet and contact KTEBO at writing-tablet-recall@ktebo.com for a free replacement. To receive a new tablet, consumers must write “Recalled” on the back of the tablet, take a photo, and send it to the address above with “Recall Proof” and their name in the subject line.

CreateOn Crayola branded pip-Cubes

What is being recalled? Approximately 9,400 Crayola-branded toys are being recalled due to the risk of ingestion, which can cause serious injury or death.

Why are they being recalled? The Crayola CreateOn pip-Cube is a magnetic construction cube sold in recognizable Crayola packaging. The strong magnets on the small blocks can loosen and, if swallowed, they can stick to each other inside the body and become stuck in the digestive system. Such magnets are known to perforate, twist, or block the intestines, causing sepsis and death.

Products affected: The recalled cubes were sold in sets of 24 or 27 cubes in bold colors and glitter. The bold colored cubes are red, green, blue, and yellow. Glitter cubes come in purple, pink, blue, and green with glitter.

“Crayola” is stamped on the left side of each cube and the model/UPC number is located on the bottom of the product packaging. The recalled UPC models and numbers are:

  • Bold colors, 24 cubes: Model number 1000199, UPC 850067300199
  • Bold colors, 27 cubes: Model number 1000243, UPC 850067300205
  • Glitter Cubes, 24 Cubes: Model #1000205, UPC 850067300205
  • Glitter Cubes, 27 Cubes: Model #1000250, UPC 850067300250

The 24-piece set was sold at Michaels stores nationwide and online at Michaels.com for about $20. The 27-piece set was sold online at Amazon.com for about $35. The entire set was sold from May 2025 to July 2025.

What to do: Consumers should immediately stop using recalled magnetic building cubes and remove them from the reach of children. To receive your free replacement set, please contact CreateOn at 800-333-0549, Monday through Friday, 9:30 AM to 4 PM Central Time, pipcuberecall@CreateOn.com or https://www.createon.com/recall/. CreateOn will provide you with a prepaid shipping label to return your cubes.

Cubimana assembly toy set

What is being recalled? Approximately 40 construction toy sets sold by fast fashion retailer Shein have been recalled for violating battery safety standards.

Why are they being recalled? The Cubimana Tree House Building Toy Set features a battery compartment with button batteries that are easily accessible to children. If swallowed, batteries can cause serious injury, internal chemical burns, and death.

Products affected: The recalled set consists of 618 multi-colored pieces for building a three-tiered tree house with the “Cubimana” logo, “Tree House” and “NO. HG1015” illuminated on the front and back of the product packaging.

The treehouse set was sold on Shein.com from July 2025 to October 2025 for approximately $20.

What to do: Consumers should immediately stop using recalled toy sets, keep them away from children, remove batteries, and dispose of them properly. To receive a full refund, customers must throw away part of the LED light along with the battery compartment and send a photo of the product in the trash to shein.us@vatostoys.com.

TooyBing Montessori Stacking Toy

What is being flagged? The CPSC also issued a warning for another Shein toy product, although no official recall has yet been announced. The agency urged consumers to immediately stop using Montessori wooden bead toys, a wooden toy from Tooibing, as they pose a choking hazard.

Why was the alarm issued? The CPSC said these toys violate the small parts ban and should not be used by children under 3. The CPSC issued a violation notice to the toy manufacturer.

Products affected: The multicolored toy consists of 25 wooden beads in pink, blue, red, orange, purple, green, white, and yellow, 2 wooden sticks with yellow and red strings, 8 pattern cards, and 1 wooden nail stand. “TooyBing”, “Montessori wooden toy” and “Fun Bead Sequencing Games” are printed on the front of the product package, and “Model number: TB-MZWJ” is written on the back.

The toy was sold online at Shein.com from July 2025 to September 2025 for approximately $20. They may also be sold by various third-party sellers and other websites.

What to do: Consumers should immediately dispose of toys and report incidents involving injuries or product defects to the CPSC (www.SaferProducts.gov).

Little Pea Shop Crib Bumper

What is being recalled? Approximately 300 Little Pea Shop brand crib bumpers have been recalled due to the risk of suffocation and death.

Why are they being recalled? This bumper violates the Infant Safe Sleep Act’s federal ban on padded crib bumpers, which can restrict infant breathing and cause serious injury or death from suffocation.

Products affected: Two styles of Little Pea Shop brand padded crib bumpers have been recalled. This includes the “waffle bedding accessory” style, which is sold as bumper pads in gray, pink, blue, and white and comes in four different lengths: 23.5 inches, 47 inches, 78.5 inches, and 94.5 inches. It also reminds me of the “Plush Crib Bumper” style, which was sold as a beige and ivory Velcro vertical crib slat cover in the shape of a bear, bunny, or star pattern.

Affected products were sold for $30 to $80 on littlepeashop.com from October 2023 to October 2025.

What to do: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled crib bumper and contact Little Pea Shop at support@littlepeashop.com for a full refund. To receive a refund, consumers must remove the crib bumper, cut out the padding, and email a photo of the destroyed bumper.

President Trump says Venezuela is smuggling deadly drugs into the United States. Experts disagree.

The president justifies deadly military strikes against America’s deadly overdoses. However, Venezuela has been linked to cocaine, which is far less deadly than fentanyl.

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump and his allies have accused Venezuela and alleged criminal networks operating on its soil, such as the Cartel de los Soles, of flooding the United States with deadly drugs, justifying a deadly military attack on a suspected drug-smuggling vessel from Venezuela.

“This mission is to protect our homeland, to rid the hemisphere of narco-terrorists, to protect our homeland from the drugs that are killing our people,” Secretary of the Army Pete Hegseth said on November 13, officially naming the mission Operation Southern Spear.

In August, the United States doubled its reward for information leading to the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to an unprecedented $50 million over his alleged ties to drug trafficking and organized crime. In a video message, Attorney General Pam Bondi denounced Maduro as “one of the world’s largest drug traffickers and a threat to our national security” and explained the bounty at the time.

President Trump and administration officials say that’s reason enough to launch attacks on U.S. forces that have killed at least 87 people in recent months, including two men clinging to the wreckage after surviving the first airstrike on Sept. 2 that killed nine other suspected smugglers. They claim it even justifies a potential attack on Venezuelan soil, which President Trump has hinted could happen soon.

However, U.S. and United Nations drug data show that Venezuela is not, and has never been, a producer or exporter of the lab-made synthetic opioid fentanyl, and that fentanyl plays a relatively minor role in the far less lethal cocaine trade.

Venezuela does not produce fentanyl

“On average, 25,000 people die on a single boat. Some say more,” Trump told U.S. military commanders in September. “As you can see, these boats are loaded with bags of white powder, but most of it is also fentanyl and other drugs.”

But Mexico is listed as a major, and virtually the only, bulk producer and exporter of fentanyl, with Chinese peddlers sending small quantities through the mail, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and other international and U.S. counter-drug organizations.

The opioid, which is 50 times more powerful than heroin, is made from precursor chemicals produced almost entirely in China and used by chemists in Mexican drug cartels to make a variety of pills, powders and other products for the U.S. market.

According to the DEA’s 2025 National Drug Threat Assessment and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence’s 2025 Annual Threat Assessment, Mexico-based transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), specifically the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG in Spanish), are the primary suppliers of illicit drugs, including fentanyl, to the U.S. market and Congress. The Bureau of Investigation made this known in an explanatory document sent to members of Congress on August 26th. “Within the past six years, Mexico’s TCO has acquired the ability to manufacture illicit fentanyl in Mexico,” the Congressional Independent Investigations Division concluded. “They reportedly use pill compression machines, often imported from China, to manufacture counterfeit medicines, including fentanyl and methamphetamine and veterinary drugs.”

Many of the victims are young people taking what they believe to be other recreational drugs or painkillers, but actually contain potentially lethal doses of fentanyl, which is only about the size of a grain or two of rice.

Venezuela plays a key role in trafficking cocaine grown and processed in Colombia and other parts of Latin America.

But the white powder, popular among recreational drug users in the United States since the 1920s, is responsible for at most a small percentage of overdose deaths in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control found that 74,702 of the 107,543 overdose deaths in the United States in 2023 involved synthetic opioids, usually fentanyl.

President Trump doesn’t seem to differentiate between cocaine and fentanyl, but according to the CDC, the number of drug overdose deaths from cocaine rose from 12,122 in 2015 to 59,725 in 2023. That’s because nearly 70% of recent deaths were caused by a mixture of cocaine and fentanyl.

What role does Venezuela play in drug trafficking?

Available data suggests that Venezuela is not a major source of cocaine and other major drugs destined for the United States, especially fentanyl.

Rather, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime’s (UNODC) World Narcotics Report 2025, it is considered to be primarily a transit point for cocaine, and in that respect is considered small, given that most of the drugs coming from Andean countries do not primarily pass through Venezuelan ports.

Both UNODC and DEA say the majority of the world’s cocaine continues to be produced in Colombia, with smaller amounts coming from Peru and Bolivia. Some human trafficking rings have moved at least some of their operations to neighboring Venezuela in response to Washington’s multibillion-dollar Plan Colombia crackdown.

And as Venezuela completely ignores the UN report, the latest US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) assessment of fentanyl is flowing into the US.

The DEA report says fentanyl destined for the United States is transported north from Mexico using a network of smugglers and other intermediaries.

“Beginning around 2019, Mexico reportedly replaced the People’s Republic of China (PRC, or China) as the primary source of illicit fentanyl bound for the United States,” the CRS report said.

This report and other reports by the DEA and the United Nations typically do not mention Venezuela at all when discussing fentanyl flows into the United States. Republican staff on the Senate Homeland Security Committee also omitted Venezuela entirely in their major 51-page report, “Addressing the Synthetic Drug Supply Chain in the United States,” released in December 2022.

Critics of Trump’s policies say the president is conflating the two drugs to assert sweeping judge, jury and executioner powers that have previously been used only against terrorist groups intent on killing Americans after the Sept. 11, 2001, al-Qaeda attacks that killed about 3,000 people.

Legal experts say the attack raises increasingly urgent and unanswered questions about whether President Trump violated domestic and international law.

President Trump and his top officials have painted Venezuela as a “narco-terrorist” nation whose government-affiliated criminal networks pose a national security threat to the United States.

The administration designated the Venezuelan criminal organization Torren de Aragua and the Cartel de los Soles, a loose network of corrupt military officials accused of drug trafficking, as terrorist organizations under Executive Order 14157.

That executive order, issued in January, is officially titled “Designating Cartels and Other Organizations as Foreign Terrorist Organizations and Specially Designated Global Terrorist Organizations.” The system aims to sanction transnational cartels that “constitute a national security threat beyond that posed by traditional organized crime.”

The order, Secretary of State Marco Rubio argued on August 8, gives the government the authority to treat designated cartels (including small boat smugglers who are likely carrying cocaine rather than fentanyl) as “armed terrorist organizations, not just drug-trafficking organizations.”

Trump was even more rhetorical.

President Trump said his administration was prepared to explain the attack to lawmakers after Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky publicly expressed concerns that the attack amounted to an illegal “extrajudicial killing.”

But on October 23, President Trump said there was no reason to ask them for Congressional approval.

Instead of asking Congress to “declare war,” President Trump said, “I think we’re just going to kill the people who are bringing drugs into our country. … They’re going to be like, dead.”

President Trump added, “Land is next.”

Trump also referenced a 2020 Justice Department first-term indictment that accused Maduro of collaborating with Colombia’s leftist guerrilla group FARC and using cocaine as a weapon against the United States.

“President Trump promised to fight cartels during his campaign and took unprecedented action to stop the scourge of narco-terrorism that has resulted in the needless deaths of innocent Americans,” White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly told USA TODAY. “All of these decisive strikes were against designated narco-terrorists who bring deadly poison to our shores, and the President will continue to use every element of American power to stop the flow of drugs into our country.”

Are Venezuelan criminal organizations trafficking drugs?

Cocaine typically travels north from Colombia through Central America and reaches the United States via the eastern Pacific and Caribbean shipping routes.

According to the UNODC Trafficking Map, a small portion of cocaine passes through Venezuela, particularly for shipments to the Caribbean and Europe. But the map shows virtually no cocaine heading from Venezuela’s coast to the United States.

Rather, maritime routes that bypass Venezuela entirely have historically been far more dominant in transporting cocaine to Mexico, where Mexican cartels smuggle it into the United States by various means.

Over the past several decades, the US-designated Cartel de los Soles has been involved in a variety of corrupt activities, including cocaine trafficking, usually in collaboration with the FARC.

Torren de Aragua, who has long been maligned by President Trump, has been implicated in a number of crimes, including extortion, extortion, drug and human trafficking conspiracies, and firearms crimes.

During last year’s presidential campaign, Mr. Trump repeatedly warned about the threat of Torren de Aragua to American society and used its association with some low-level crime to strengthen his case for mass deportations of illegal immigrants from Venezuela.

Some U.S. officials consider many offshoots of the group to be violent and locally influential. However, available international drug tracking data does not support claims that they are significantly involved in cocaine smuggling into the United States.

There is also conflicting evidence as to whether the group is working with President Maduro, as the Trump administration claims, or is hostile to the regime.

Last July, President Maduro said at a police ceremony that Venezuela had “ended Torren de Aragua.”

And last year, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Ivan Gil declared that Torren de Aragua no longer exists, according to Insight Crime, a think tank and media organization specializing in organized crime investigations in the Americas.

“We have proven that Torren de Aragua is a fiction created by international media to create a label that does not exist,” Gil was quoted as saying.

Everything is turning orange for Kylie and Timmy.

Timothée Chalamet arrived at the Los Angeles premiere of his new movie Marty Supreme in a striking orange ensemble that matched his girlfriend Kylie Jenner’s outfit. Chalamet, 29, wore an orange leather suit with a matching button-down and a black crossbody bag shaped like a table tennis paddle.

The film stars Chalamet as a table tennis player loosely inspired by Marty Reisman and follows his quest for greatness.

A die-hard New Yorker, Chalamet paired the look with orange Timberlands. Jenner, 28, stayed true to the theme and wore everything orange, right down to her acrylic nails. Her bright leather cutout gown was complemented by chunky gothic silver jewelry. The look was designed by Chrome Hearts Label.

Equal parts drama and comedy, the film’s press coverage is punctuated by their looks and hers, defined by hyperbole.

The film, directed by Josh Safdie and co-produced by Chalamet, will be released in theaters on Christmas Day in the United States, but has already begun to receive rave reviews. To promote the film, Chalamet has already pulled several stunts, including a staged Zoom call with the film’s marketing team, during which he pitched some crazy ideas to the press. One was a bright orange blimp with the film’s title on it, which was actually realized.

Chalamet and Jenner’s red carpet moments seem designed to generate buzz, as interest in this mismatched couple continues to grow, with the internet seemingly both fascinated and confused by their pairing.

This is the second time the famous actor and reality star, who started dating in 2023, has appeared on the red carpet. Since then, the pair have been spotted at music festivals, sporting events, and award shows. Jenner has two children, Stormi, 7, and Isle, 3, with ex-boyfriend Travis Scott.
