Epstein files ‘filled with unusual edits’, accusers say

More than a dozen Epstein accusers have cited the withholding and redaction of hundreds of thousands of pages, including all 119 pages of grand jury documents.

WASHINGTON – More than a dozen Jeffrey Epstein accusers have criticized the Justice Department’s release of documents related to its investigation into sex trafficking allegations, calling them “full of unexplained, unusual and extreme redactions.”

One example is a grand jury document that a federal judge authorized to release, but all 119 pages were blacked out. None of its financial documents have been made public, leaving hundreds of thousands of pages unpublished.

“These are clear violations of the law,” the group wrote in a two-page letter, calling for oversight and accountability from Congress.

‘No authorization for delayed disclosure’ of Epstein files

The two House members who authored the Epstein File Transparency Act, which directed the department to release records by Dec. 19, accused Attorney General Pam Bondi of “breaking the law” by releasing parts of the documents and threatened to hold her in contempt.

Bondi reaffirmed on social media the department’s intention to prosecute those involved in Epstein’s alleged human trafficking and exploitation of girls as young as 14. Mr Bondi asked the victim to come forward. She called the Trump administration the most transparent in history.

Congress approved the bill, signed by President Donald Trump, requiring the release by Dec. 19 of the names of alleged victims, depictions of child sexual abuse, and any department files that would adversely affect the prosecution of a case.

“Permission to delay disclosure was not obtained,” the group said in the letter. “Instead, the public received a portion of the file, but what we received was full of unusual and extreme edits without any explanation.”

However, in releasing hundreds of thousands of documents, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche acknowledged on Friday, December 19, that hundreds of thousands more documents are still being reviewed. He also told Congress that some documents could be withheld under legal privilege, which covers things like lawyers’ internal deliberations and communications with clients.

Blanche said more documents would be released in the coming weeks. The law requires the ministry to list the documents that have been withheld from release and to explain the reasons for the decision within 15 days.

Epstein files have ‘no guidance on how to find materials’

Epstein and members of Congress are pushing for the release of documents to identify suspects who may have helped Epstein cover up or cover up the human trafficking allegations.

But the accusers criticized the department for the delays and redactions, as well as the way the documents were released, saying it “made it difficult or impossible for survivors to find the materials most relevant to our search.”

“There is no guidance for survivors on how to locate materials related to our own cases, and despite repeated requests, we have not been provided with copies of our own files,” the group wrote.

Signers of the letter are Jess Michaels, Rachel Benavidez, Danielle Bensky, Lara Blume McGee, Marieke Chartouni, Anuska de Giorgio, Maria Farmer, Annie Farmer, Teresa J. Helm, Marina Lacerda, Lisa Phillips, Ashley Rubright, Amanda and Skye Roberts, Charlene Rochard, and Liz Stein. Also included were three others identified as AW and two Jane Does.

Lawmakers threaten to hold Bondi in contempt over Epstein’s partial release

Representatives Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) and Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) each accused Bondi of “breaking the law” by not releasing more documents. They threatened to hold her in contempt of Congress.

Massey said on social media on Sunday, Dec. 21, that “Epstein survivors are not satisfied with the Justice Department’s incomplete and redacted” disclosures starting Dec. 19. Ms Massey said “unfortunately” Bondi was “breaking the law”.

“Congress should assert its ability to hold Mr. Bondi in ‘substantial contempt’ to bring justice to survivors,” Massey said.

New York Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer proposed a resolution on Monday, Dec. 22, that would force the Justice Department to release more documents. But the Democratic Party is in the minority, so its prospects are uncertain. “We cannot allow this administration to hide the truth,” Schumer said on social media.

“60 Minutes” segment in El Salvador prison canceled hours before broadcast

play

CBS cut the “60 Minutes” segment hours before it was scheduled to air on Dec. 21, a move that appears to have sparked a backlash from correspondents.

This segment was supposed to feature El Salvador’s infamous prison, CECOT.

The news program announced the program’s renewal in a statement around 4:30 p.m. ET on Dec. 21, adding that the piece “will air on a future broadcast.”

CBS News said in a statement to USA TODAY that it “determined that additional reporting was necessary.”

Correspondent Sharin Alfonsi, who has worked for the network for more than 20 years, reported the story. Multiple news outlets, including The New York Times, NPR and CNN, obtained an email that Alfonsi sent to colleagues in which she said the decision to eliminate the corner was “a political decision, not an editorial one.” USA TODAY was unable to contact Alfonsi.

Instead, “60 Minutes” will air a segment about the classical musician’s family, according to the program’s latest information. Since then, the show’s social media comments have been flooded with comments from viewers, demanding the network release the original clip.

This year has been a turbulent one for the Paramount-owned station. The company acquired independent media company The Free Press in October and appointed CEO Bari Weiss as editor-in-chief of CBS News.

Canceled “60 Minutes” segment was based on CECOT’s “brutal and torturous conditions”

The segment, called “Inside CECOT,” will feature interviews with Venezuelan immigrants who were deported to prison by President Donald Trump’s administration, according to archived program notes.

Alfonsi spoke with some of the deportees who have now been released and described the “brutal and torturous conditions they endured inside CECOT,” which the logline describes as “one of the harshest prisons in El Salvador.”

CECOT, officially called the “Terrorist Confinement Center” and notorious for its harsh and dangerous conditions, is being used to house some immigrant detainees from the United States as part of an agreement with El Salvador.

A Human Rights Watch report released in November details the experiences of 40 Venezuelan prisoners at CECOT, where they allege they faced constant abuse at the hands of guards. Although the United States and the Salvadoran government have accused these prisoners of being terrorists, the report found that many of them have not been convicted of any crime.

The prison also made headlines earlier this year when the Trump administration deported Kilmer Abrego Garcia, a Maryland native from El Salvador who had been granted legal protection to stay in the United States, on March 15.

Abrego-Garcia was released from prison on December 11 after U.S. District Judge Paula Kisinis of Maryland said the Trump administration had no legal basis to deport him.

“60 Minutes” faces criticism from President Trump

CBS has been at odds with President Trump several times this year.

In July, Paramount agreed to pay $16 million to settle a lawsuit brought by Mr. Trump over a “60 Minutes” segment that aired last year. He claimed it was edited in favor of former Vice President Kamala Harris during the campaign.

Earlier this month, President Trump slammed CBS News over its interview with Marjorie Taylor Greene.

“They are no better than the old ownership who paid me millions of dollars for false reporting about me, your favorite president!” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “60 Minutes has actually gotten worse since they bought it. Well, it could be worse.”

David Ellison, the son of Trump ally and Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, became Paramount’s CEO in August after the company merged with Skydance.

David Ellison’s Paramount is also pursuing a hostile takeover of Warner Bros., which lost a bidding war to Netflix. President Trump has repeatedly criticized Warner Bros.-owned CNN, calling it “essential” to sell the news network.

Bernie Sanders and Letitia James take oath at Zoran Mandani

play

New York Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani will be sworn in in two ceremonies on January 1 by fellow Democratic Socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders and New York State Attorney General Letitia James.

Mr. James is scheduled to take the oath of office in a small ceremony with Mr. Mamdani, 34, and his family on the steps of City Hall at midnight, before a public oath hosted by Mr. Sanders.

A December 22 press release from Mamdani’s transition team described the pair as “political inspiration” for the next mayor.

Mr. James, 67, is a Democrat who has become a prominent figure representing his party’s opposition to the Trump administration. She sued Trump in a civil fraud case in 2023 and fought a now-dismissed Justice Department complaint this year.

Like Mamdani, Sanders, a Brooklyn native, identifies as a democratic socialist and is one of the country’s most prominent progressive lawmakers. Sanders, 84, supported Mamdani in the mayoral race and campaigned for him ahead of his Nov. 4 victory. The two appeared together in Brooklyn earlier this month in support of the Starbucks employee strike.

The longtime senator representing Vermont will take the oath of office in a public ceremony on the afternoon of January 1, followed by a public block party spanning seven blocks of Manhattan’s iconic Broadway.

In a statement accompanying the announcement of the next mayor, Sanders called Mamdani a representative of “a new generation of progressive leaders” and hailed his election victory as a victory for the “working class movement.”

“I am honored to swear him in as the next mayor of New York City,” Sanders said.

At least 4,000 ticketed guests are expected to attend the public swearing-in ceremony on City Hall Square. The block party is billed as a city celebration open to all New Yorkers and is expected to draw tens of thousands of people.

In 2021, outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was sworn in in Times Square shortly after the ball dropped.

Former Mayor Bill de Blasio also held two inauguration ceremonies outdoors on the plaza in front of City Hall, but the second one had to be shortened due to frigid temperatures. Michael Bloomberg famously held a ceremony in Times Square in 2002, just months after the 9/11 attacks, and then resumed the long-standing tradition of taking the oath at a City Hall event with these words:

Earlier this month, Mamdani announced in a social media post that he and his wife would be moving to Gracie Mansion, the city’s top leader’s historic home on the East River.

Eva Phillippe is looking more and more like her mother, Reese Witherspoon!

The actress shared a photo of the two of them in a post celebrating the holiday with her three children. Son Deacon Phillippe, 22, took a mirror selfie with his mom, and son Tennessee James Toth, 13, was spotted flashing baby blue eyes identical to Witherspoon’s while out in the snow.

But it was the photo of Witherspoon and her daughter Ava Phillippe, 26, that caught the attention of commenters.

“Wow, I had to look twice because I didn’t know which one was you!” wrote internet personality Peyton Baxter. “You’re both so beautiful.”

“Oh my god, you guys are twins!” wrote content creator Chrissy Melin. Another user commented: “Is this your child?! They look so much like twins!”

Witherspoon shares Ava and Deacon Phillippe with her ex-husband, actor Ryan Phillippe, and Tennessee with her ex-husband, former talent agent Jim Toth.

Eva Phillippe is following in her parents’ footsteps and starring in Netflix’s Ransom Canyon while her modeling career is budding.

Elsewhere, the “Legally Blonde” star got into the holiday spirit by showing off a red-and-gold dessert-themed Christmas tree, a gingerbread house with her and her children’s names on it, and posing for a photo with her “Big Little Lies” co-star Laura Dern at a festive clothing store. She also posed for a photo with her mother, Betty Reese, 77, in a cozy red sweater on the tarmac under a rainbow. She captioned the post, “Feeling merry,” along with heart, star and Christmas tree emojis.

What is a home warranty? What you need to know in 2026

0

A home warranty is a type of home protection plan that covers the cost of repairing your most important home systems and appliances should they fail due to normal wear and tear. So if your air conditioner stops working in the middle of summer, or your oven stops working a few days before a big family gathering, you can rely on your home warranty provider to get it fixed right away.

This home warranty guide explains what a home warranty is, what it covers, and how to find the right warranty for your home.

What is a home warranty?

A home warranty is an optional service contract that pays for the repair or replacement of major home systems and appliances if they fail due to normal wear and tear. The average home warranty covers HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems, as well as kitchen appliances. Some products are even more comprehensive and include washing machines, water heaters, septic systems, and limited roof leak coverage.

“A home warranty can save you thousands of dollars a year in repairs, and that’s my experience as a real estate agent and homeowner. I recommend a home warranty to all my clients who are buying a new home, (but) it depends on the coverage, the insurance, and the frequency of use,” says Jennifer Ohvat, a real estate agent with Compass in Los Angeles.

If your system or appliance stops working, all you have to do is file a claim with your home warranty provider, pay the service call fee, and have a technician diagnose and repair the problem.

How does a home warranty work?

From start to finish, when you purchase a home warranty, you can expect:

  • Please select a plan: Once you find the right home warranty provider, select the coverage for the systems and appliances you want to protect. You can often choose between a system plan, an appliance-only plan, or a combo plan.
  • Pay your insurance premium: Monthly or annual payments are required to activate coverage. There may be a short waiting period (usually 30 days) before you are eligible to claim.
  • When something breaks: If a product covered by the warranty breaks down due to wear and tear, please immediately file a claim with the warranty company. This is as easy as filling out a form online or calling one of our customer service representatives.
  • Service dispatch: Your provider will assign a network technician to diagnose and resolve your issue. In some cases, you may be able to select your own service specialist.
  • Pay the service fee: There is a service call fee for each visit, typically around $100.
  • Repair or replacement: If approved, your home warranty company will cover repairs or replacements up to your plan’s limits.

Hint: Keeping maintenance records will allow you to provide proof of maintenance if your warranty provider requires proof of maintenance before approving your claim.

What is covered by a home warranty?

Home warranty companies offer plans that cover your main home systems, your most important appliances, or a combination of the two.

  • home systemincluding HVAC systems, plumbing systems, and electrical systems.
  • major home appliancesrefrigerator, dishwasher, clothes washer and dryer, oven, etc.
  • additional itemspool/spa equipment, roof leaks, well pumps, septic systems, etc.

Products not covered by home warranty

A home warranty covers the cost of repairs due to normal wear and tear. The most common home warranty exclusions are:

  • existing symptoms
  • Structural components (walls, windows, doors, roofs, foundations)
  • Products covered by manufacturer’s warranty
  • Damage due to improper use
  • Damage due to improper or inadequate maintenance
  • Damage due to improper installation
  • surface defects
  • pest damage
  • Damages from natural disasters (and other issues covered by homeowners insurance)

Difference between home warranty and home insurance

Although home warranties and home insurance may seem similar, they are not the same. Home insurance is often required by financial institutions when purchasing a home, and home warranties are optional additional coverage.

Home insurance protects your home and belongings from unexpected events such as fire, theft, and natural disasters. A home warranty, on the other hand, is a service contract that covers the cost of repairing or replacing major systems and appliances, such as HVAC, plumbing, and kitchen appliances, if they break down through normal use.

How much does a home warranty cost in 2026?

If you anticipate that your home will need repairs, a home warranty policy is low risk and worth the cost. “They’re relatively inexpensive, so there’s very little risk if you’re locked into a deal that’s only $500 or $1,000,” says Brad Dewin of We Buy MD Homes.

According to data collected by USA TODAY’s team, most home warranty plans cost between $35 and $100 per month, or between $420 and $1,200 per year. This makes home warranties affordable for most homeowners, making one service call worth the monthly payments.

Home warranty benefits

Peace of mind is often cited as one of the most common benefits of having a home warranty, but there are several other things that make it worthwhile.

  • Predictable budget for home repairs: Instead of paying hundreds or thousands of dollars for unexpected appliance failure, you pay a fixed monthly fee for your home warranty.
  • Connect with trusted service experts: If your system breaks down, finding the right repair service can be difficult. Home warranty providers often have a network of service professionals who can come to your home.
  • Cover any gaps in homeowners insurance. A home warranty doesn’t replace home insurance, but it does cover the cost of repairing systems and appliances if they get old or break. This is different from home insurance, which covers environmental damage, theft, and vandalism.
  • May add value to real estate transactions: Including a home warranty in your home sale, especially if your home is older, can help attract buyers and make it easier to sell your home.
  • Coverage for older systems and appliances: Old systems and appliances can fail at any time, and often at the most inconvenient times. A home warranty provides peace of mind that you are covered in the event of an unavoidable breakdown.

What to consider before purchasing a home warranty

A home warranty is not a pass for unlimited free repairs to your home. These home service plans are useful if your breakdown qualifies, but there are a few things to keep in mind before purchasing.

  • Coverage limits may not cover the entire cost of repair or replacement. Plans have both aggregate (total) coverage limits and individual system/appliance coverage limits. If the repair cost exceeds one or both of these amounts, you will be required to pay the difference. However, many repairs fall within specified warranty coverage.
  • It may not be covered by compensation. Home warranties don’t cover everything, and some common problems may not be covered, such as breakdowns due to improper maintenance.
  • Your claim may be denied. Your home warranty provider will deny your claim if the exclusion states the reason your appliance or system failed.
  • You will be charged a call fee for each visit. You are responsible for paying the service call fee for each repair, as well as paying your deductible.
  • Repairs are not always quick. Response times vary by home warranty provider, but don’t be surprised if it takes up to 72 hours for a service professional to be dispatched to your home. It may take additional time for parts to arrive to complete the repair.

Hint: Always read the contract and check the fine print. This will make it easier to understand the exclusions so you know what is covered.

Alternatives to home warranties

Home warranties aren’t the only option to cover unexpected home appliance or home system failures. If you don’t want to pay for a home warranty every month (or don’t need it yet), the following alternatives may be better options.

  • Build up an emergency savings fund
  • Register appliances and systems for manufacturer warranties
  • Look for extended product warranties that continue after the manufacturer’s warranty has expired
  • Obtain a Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC) to cover home improvements.

Where can I buy a home warranty

Companies like American Home Shield, Cinch HomeWarranty, and Liberty Home Guard are reputable home warranty providers that offer comprehensive coverage at an affordable price. Enter your zip code in the map below to see which home warranty companies are available in your area.

FAQ

What does a home warranty mean?

Home warranties are designed to pay for the repair or replacement of broken home systems and appliances. If the damage is covered by warranty, you only pay the service call fee, and your home warranty company covers the rest (up to certain coverage limits).

What are the disadvantages of a home warranty?

Because a home warranty only covers damage due to normal wear and tear, your system or appliance may not be covered if the damage falls under an exclusion.

What does a home warranty cover when purchasing a home?

Home warranties cover your home’s major systems and appliances, including your HVAC system, electrical system, and kitchen appliances. If one of these fails due to normal wear and tear, your home warranty will cover the cost of repair.

Two congressmen seek contempt for AG Bondi over Epstein’s partial release

0

Bondi says the Trump administration is the most transparent in history. She called on Epstein victims to come forward to pursue charges against other potential co-conspirators.

play

WASHINGTON – Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer proposed a resolution Monday that would force the Justice Department to release more documents about convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, and two House members said they would pursue contempt charges against Attorney General Pam Bondi for withholding the documents.

New York’s Schumer said the Senate could act on his resolution in January. But the Democratic Party is in the minority, so its prospects are uncertain. “We cannot allow this administration to hide the truth,” Schumer said on social media.

Representatives Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) and Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) each accused Bondi of “breaking the law” by not releasing more documents. They threatened to detain her for contempt of Congress.

Bondi reaffirmed on social media that the department intends to prosecute those involved in Epstein’s alleged human trafficking and exploitation of girls as young as 14. Mr Bondi asked the victim to come forward. She called the Trump administration the most transparent in history.

Massey seeks ‘essential contempt’ for Bondi over Epstein release

Congress approved and President Donald Trump signed a bill that requires all department files that do not name victims, depict child sexual abuse or damage the prosecution of the case to be released by Dec. 19.

In releasing hundreds of thousands of documents, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche acknowledged on Friday, December 19, that hundreds of thousands more are still under review. He also told Congress that some documents could be withheld under legal privilege, which covers things like lawyers’ internal deliberations and communications with clients.

Blanche said more documents would be released in the coming weeks. The Epstein File Transparency Act requires the department to list the documents withheld from release and explain why within 15 days.

“The Epstein survivors are not satisfied with the Department of Justice’s incomplete and redacted disclosures starting December 19th,” Massey said on social media on Sunday, December 21st. Massey said “unfortunately” Bondi was “breaking the law.”

“Congress should assert its ability to hold Mr. Bondi in ‘substantial contempt’ to bring justice to survivors,” Massey said.

Publication of FBI files is ‘extremely unusual’, legal expert says

Khanna said on social media on Sunday, Dec. 21, that the release of the 60 indictments, 82 pages of indictment memos and FBI files drafted but never filed against Epstein would give further credibility to Bondi’s pledge to prosecute the rich and powerful.

The 60 drafts refer to a federal investigation from 2006 to 2008 that resulted in a non-prosecution agreement with Epstein. The 82-page prosecution memo was also from the same period. The FBI files requested by lawmakers include so-called 302 forms, which are notes summarizing investigators’ interviews with victims.

Mr Khanna said an estimated 1,200 victims were abused by wealthy and powerful people who took part in the attack, helped cover it up or were on Mr Epstein’s private island in the Caribbean.

“And what the American people want to know is who these people are,” Khanna told CBS News on Sunday, Dec. 21, on “Standing Up with the Nation with Margaret Brennan.” “And instead of holding them accountable, Pam Bondi is breaking the law.”

Sarah Krisoff, a partner at Cozen O’Connor and a former New York federal prosecutor, said FBI agents are trained to be diligent record-keepers and that the 302 documents “provide a roadmap for the investigation” with “critical information” from witnesses and documents. However, that form is usually not made public.

“It’s very rare to see FBI 302,” Krisoff said.

Epstein died by suicide in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.

His colleague Ghislaine Maxwell was the only person charged with conspiring with him, and she is serving a 20-year sentence.

Is Matt Eberflus of the Cowboys a good cook?

0

play

  • Jerry Jones said the Cowboys wouldn’t evaluate Matt Eberflus until after the season, but the defensive coordinator didn’t help his cause in the end.
  • The Jaguars are still in contention for the No. 1 seed in the AFC, and Jacksonville looks like a legitimate threat to make the playoffs.
  • While the Steelers found some brilliance in the backfield, the Ravens once again faltered.

The initial magic of the holiday season couldn’t be sustained in Week 16 of the NFL.

The Seattle Seahawks got off to a bright start Thursday by defeating the Los Angeles Rams, changing the landscape for the NFC West and the conference’s top seed. The excitement continued Saturday as the Chicago Bears defeated the Green Bay Packers to take control of the NFC North in thrilling fashion.

However, on Sunday, the drama stalled considerably, confirming how the week’s schedule was pushed forward. But when the Bears and San Francisco 49ers clinched their postseason tickets, there was still plenty of fallout to resolve.

Here are the biggest winners and losers from NFL Week 16.

NFL Week 16 Winner

Justin Herbert

The Los Angeles Chargers quarterback’s workload has tipped into intolerable territory in recent weeks after suffering a broken bone in his left hand, shouldering a disproportionate burden for an offense that lost its most productive offensive tackle. However, Herbert returned to his best form with a great performance in a 34-17 win over the Dallas Cowboys. Herbert, who completed 23 of 29 passes for 300 yards and two touchdowns, balanced efficiency and aggression, working underneath to keep the offense moving while making two long scores and numerous other downfield shots. And despite blitzing with a season-high dropback rate of 54.7%, Herbert didn’t have a sack in the game, his first in 2025, according to Next Gen Stats. Perhaps this says more about the Chargers’ opponents than Herbert and the offense, but more on that later, but it marked important progress heading into next week’s matchup with the Houston Texans and their impressive pass rush.

jacksonville jaguars

Two weeks ago, Trevor Lawrence reflected on his team’s place in the larger football world by declaring, “Nobody cares about the Jags, and that’s fine.” By the end of the season, more people may need to at least pay attention to them. Jacksonville’s 34-20 win over the Denver Broncos not only kept its hopes alive for the AFC’s No. 1 seed, but also made a statement that the team is well-deserving of a spot at the top of the conference playoff standings. Against a defense that was crushing everyone in the passing game, Lawrence came out hot again, keying a fast game while throwing three touchdowns while scoring another. Parker Washington had 10 receptions for 145 yards and was key to the offense’s mission to do significant damage after the catch. It has long been thought in the AFC playoff race that Jacksonville could be as dangerous as any other team in the postseason if the team maintains this trajectory.

pittsburgh steelers backfield

On a day when DK Metcalf’s most explosive moment was a physical confrontation with a Detroit Lions fan, the Steelers looked to their backfield to provide the spark they needed for an eventual 29-24 victory. Kenneth Gainwell turned things around just before halftime when he managed to secure a deep heave from Aaron Rodgers just after falling to the turf, and the then-fifth-year man sprinted into the end zone to tie the score at 10-10. Then, in the second half, Jalen Warren broke through with the ground game, rushing for 45 yards and two scores. Amid all the drama, the Steelers are currently in prime position to win their first AFC North title since 2020.

Lathan Ransom

A week after his unnecessary roughness penalty fueled an upset of the New Orleans Saints, the Carolina Panthers’ rookie safety found himself in an even gentler spotlight Sunday. Ransom secured Baker Mayfield’s errant pass and made his first NFL interception in a 23-20 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It was part of an overall great effort from Carolina’s rookie class, with Tetailoa McMillan continuing to build on his Offensive Rookie of the Year credentials with six catches, 73 yards and a touchdown, and Nick Skorton’s tenacity on the pass rush helping Mayfield avoid crisis. Barring the Buccaneers’ loss to the Miami Dolphins and the Panthers’ upset of the Seahawks, the division title will rest in a winner-take-all rematch from Week 18. But Carolina would have been in trouble with a loss and an unfavorable setup in Week 17, so keeping things in check at home was still an important step.

Cam Ward

A win over the current shell of the Kansas City Chiefs probably isn’t cause for celebration for many teams. But in a trying season for the Tennessee Titans, the team must hang on to whatever positive signs are scattered. Most of them typically go back to Ward, a No. 1 pick who has shown promise despite the Titans essentially finishing the season after just six games. His 2.42-second average pitch time was the fastest all season, according to Next Gen Stats, and his recent games showed great improvement. Still, Ward managed to weave in some calculated shots, including an incredible 30-yard completion by rookie Chaimera Dike downfield as the quarterback ran to his left. With six touchdowns and just one interception in his past three games, Ward has enjoyed a steady rise that bodes very well for his second year, but only as long as he’s paired with a new coach who can help him become a more efficient passer while embracing the dynamic skillset he offers.

Chris Olave

The Saints made it clear at the trade deadline that the speedy receiver will be an integral part of the team’s future. However, his price seems to be rising exponentially. In a 29-6 win over the New York Jets, Olave had 10 catches for a season-high 148 yards and two touchdowns. The fourth-year wideout is one of many players in New Orleans that has been rejuvenated by Tyler Shaw’s appointment as starting quarterback, and five of his eight touchdowns this season have come in the last six weeks. And with 29-year-old possession receiver Jakobi Meyers signing a three-year, $60 million contract extension last week, Olave is poised for a big payday this offseason with only a fifth-year option remaining on his contract.

NFL Week 16 Losers

matt everflus

Moving from the field to the coach’s booth didn’t change much in perspective or effectiveness for the Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator. On the day, Eberflus’ unit allowed touchdowns on the Chargers’ first three drives and 7.3 yards per play. Indeed, without Quinnen Williams, the need to rely on blitzing to generate a pass rush only increased. But the inability of this post-Micah Parsons front team to do what nearly every other team has been able to do in terms of beating Herbert is a massive indictment on both the scheme and the personnel. A visibly exhausted Jerry Jones said after the game that he didn’t plan to make a decision on Eberflus during the season, but stopped short of backing up his embattled coordinator. When asked about evaluating Eberflus’ future, Jones told reporters: “It might not be that difficult.” “That’s certainly something we have to do.” With Brian Schottenheimer and a stellar offensive line more than up to the task, it’s hard to see a case for bringing him back to oversee a unit that ranks 31st in points allowed.

baltimore ravens

Lamar Jackson injured? Did the offense get undone by turnovers? And a defense that can’t defend properly when it matters most? In a 28-24 loss to the New England Patriots, the Ravens gave up all of their hits while running fast and collapsing their season. Perhaps with Jackson sidelined with a hip injury, Baltimore’s playoff hopes may be doomed, but that depends on both a win against the Green Bay Packers on Saturday and the Steelers’ loss to the Cleveland Browns the following Sunday. But there are no excuses for a team that stumbles so often, and John Harbaugh’s crew isn’t just a victim of circumstance.

NFL Christmas lineup

Heading into Sunday, Netflix and Prime Video’s holiday tripleheader was already set to feature four teams eliminated from playoff contention, including a Chiefs team whose appeal has been significantly diminished by Patrick Mahomes’ season-ending knee injury. But things could be even more dire for streamers. There is concern about Kansas City backup Gardner Minshew’s torn ACL, so Chris Oladokun could start against the Denver Broncos and the team’s vaunted pass rush. If the name doesn’t ring a bell, don’t worry. Oladokun is known only to die-hard Chiefs fans, NFL Draft enthusiasts, and preseason football enthusiasts. Meanwhile, JJ McCarthy’s hand injury means the Minnesota Vikings could once again start undrafted rookie Max Brosmer, who had a disastrous debut as a first-stringer against the Seahawks. Instead of getting sucked into boring, boring games this Christmas, you might want to dust off your old movies or spend some time with your family.

Is a home warranty worth it in 2026?

0

A home warranty is a service contract that covers the cost of repairing or replacing home systems and appliances if they fail due to normal wear and tear. For many homeowners, a home warranty provides peace of mind and allows them to better budget for expensive repairs. However, it may not be of value to everyone. That’s why we asked experts to explain when a home warranty is worth it, and when you might consider other options.

“In my more than 33 years of experience as a Florida real estate broker, I can say 90 percent of the time they (home warranties) are worth it. Even if you don’t need them for a year, the peace of mind of knowing you won’t be billed for unexpected repairs is worth it in itself,” says Kristen D. Conti, broker and co-owner of Peacock Premier Properties in Inglewood, Florida.

When is a home warranty worth it?

Home warranties are most valuable when there is a high risk of uncertainty or expensive repairs. “A home warranty makes the most sense for first-time home buyers, owners of older homes, or those who don’t want to be hit with surprise repair costs during the first year of ownership,” says Austin Glanzer, an experienced home buyer and co-owner of 717 Home Buyers in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Whether you know your home’s history or not, it’s not uncommon for unexpected home repairs to occur. From plumbing issues that were missed during inspections to aging appliances that you thought would last another year, problems can easily arise when you can’t afford a big new expense. A home warranty can help cover those costs.

If you don’t have an emergency fund saved, expensive home repairs can turn into a one-way ticket to a credit card. “When a $5,000 HVAC breakdown puts a huge dent in your budget, a warranty is a good thing,” adds Glanzer. The cost of this repair will likely be covered by your home warranty, and it’s worth paying the premium each month.

When is a home warranty not useful?

After all, a home warranty is only worth it if you use it. If your annual Premium Plus service fee doesn’t break even for at least some common fixes, or if your plan’s limitations make it difficult to receive quality service, you may want to budget for repairs yourself. Here are some examples when a home warranty isn’t worth it to you.

If you rarely file claims, or if your regular repair costs are lower than your plan’s service charge (the deductible you pay each time you submit a claim), it may not be worth it.

If your coverage limits are too low, you could end up paying the difference for expensive repairs, especially for HVAC, plumbing, and electrical issues. Similarly, broad or vague exclusions (such as pre-existing conditions, improper installation, lack of maintenance, code upgrades, refrigerant or disposal fees, etc.) can turn legitimate issues into claim denials. All of this can make a home warranty worthless for many homeowners.

Contractor networks can also be a source of frustration. “The downside is that many home warranties only allow certain contractors to be used in the event of a defect covered by the warranty, and that’s often where the problem lies,” says Brad Dewin of We Buy MD Homes. “Service professionals authorized by certain home warranties often don’t have proper ratings or reviews. In some cases, they don’t even have a license or actually have no reviews online. These are red flags,” he added.

You may refrain from purchasing a home warranty if any of the following apply to you:

  • Have a sufficient emergency savings fund for unexpected expenses.
  • The system and appliances are new.
  • Your system and appliances are covered by the manufacturer’s warranty.

How to make your home warranty worthwhile

“The warranty pays for itself in one major repair,” says Glanzer. You should file a claim as soon as you notice a problem, maintain your home systems and appliances, and above all, remember to take advantage of your warranty. “But often people forget they have a warranty or there aren’t any major problems with their home,” he added.

To make your home warranty worthwhile, you should:

  • Read the contract line by line. Know what is covered, what is excluded (pre-existing conditions, improper installation, etc.), coverage limits, and waiting periods.
  • Choose the plan that best suits your home. Align scope to actual systems and appliances. You can skip add-ons that you don’t use. If you’re installing a new HVAC system, you likely won’t need that coverage and can go for a less expensive appliance-only plan.
  • Track rates and limits. Compare service call fees, per-claim limits, and total annual limits to repair and replacement costs in your area. Make sure your limits are sufficient to cover the most common repairs.
  • Please submit your claim promptly. Report any problems as soon as you notice them to avoid negative consequences related to neglect or poor maintenance.
  • Document everything. Keep photos, serial numbers, maintenance receipts, technician notes, etc. as these will only strengthen your claim or dispute.

Things to consider when researching home warranty plans

A home warranty does not promise to repair or replace all failed appliances or systems, and is best used as a budgeting tool. “It’s best to approach this service with realistic expectations rather than promises of savings,” says Sean Malloy, founder and managing partner of the Malloy Law Firm, who regularly handles real estate litigation. While you can rely on your home warranty for many repairs, it’s not designed to cover everything.

“The key is to read the fine print, understand what the warranty covers, and look for any ambiguous terms and conditions,” says Dwin. In addition, Malloy recommends understanding how well your warranty is covered and the main reasons your claim is denied by “reading it line by line and asking how often your claims are denied and why.”

Dwin and Malloy agree on the things homeowners should consider when looking for the right home warranty plan.

  • Scrutinize your contractor network. Check Google, Yelp, Trustpilot, and licensing databases to see which technicians are used for warranties. A lack of reviews, low ratings, or lack of licenses are red flags.
  • Make sure you can (or don’t) choose your own pros. Ask if out-of-network contractors are allowed and under what conditions (prior authorization, reimbursement limits, etc.).
  • Clarify ambiguous terms. Ask how the plan interprets language like “inadequate maintenance,” “pre-existing conditions,” or “normal wear and tear,” and get examples in writing (i.e., via email).
  • Review coverage limitations. Be aware of per-claim and annual limits, parts/labor limits, and sub-limits for high-cost systems.
  • Ask about the rejection rate and why. Request data and examples of common rejections (lack of maintenance, code issues, etc.) to understand the pitfalls.
  • Set realistic expectations. Treat the warranty as a budgeting tool, not a promise to repair or replace all items not covered by service.
  • Understand the billing process. You need to know how the file is created, typical response times, re-service periods for failed repairs, and required documentation such as photos and maintenance records.
  • Compare the total cost and expected usage. Balance premiums and service fees with the age and condition of your systems and appliances to make sure the price of your plan meets your home’s needs.

FAQ

What are the disadvantages of a home warranty?

There are certain things that home warranties don’t cover, such as pre-existing conditions, cosmetic damage, and damage to the home’s structure, such as the foundation. There are also coverage limitations, so your plan may not cover the full cost of replacing your system or appliance.

What are the home warranty red flags?

A home warranty that offers to cover everything but has an extensive list of exclusions is a red flag. Low customer reviews are also a red flag that your customers may not be satisfied with your service.

Will a housing deposit be paid?

Yes, your home warranty will pay if your covered home systems or appliances fail due to normal wear and tear.

DHS increases voluntary deportation payments to $3,000 per person

The offer is made through Customs and Border Protection’s CBP Home app, which officials say tens of thousands of undocumented immigrants use to seek deportation.

play

WASHINGTON – The Department of Homeland Security will triple its payments to $3,000 per person for undocumented immigrants it deports for vacation.

As President Donald Trump tightens immigration controls, the department is offering $1,000 and free travel to people who remain in the United States without legal authority to persuade them to leave.

The benefit to the government is that it avoids the average cost of arresting, detaining and removing an immigrant, which costs $17,121, officials said.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said U.S. taxpayers are “generously” tripling their exit bonus through Dec. 31.

“Undocumented immigrants should take advantage of this gift and voluntarily leave, because if they don’t, we’ll find them, arrest them, and never come back,” Noem said in a statement.

Those who are deported may never return to their home country. However, by leaving voluntarily, illegal immigrants may eventually return to the United States through legal channels.

The department urges illegal immigrants to use Customs and Border Protection’s CBP Home app to self-deport.

DHS officials say an estimated 1.9 million illegal immigrants left the country this year, but that number is difficult to corroborate because many leave voluntarily. Officials say tens of thousands of people use the CBP Home app.

The right-wing Center for Immigration Studies estimated that the foreign-born population declined by 2.2 million people in the first six months of this year, based on projections from the U.S. Census Current Population Survey. This figure represents the largest single-year decline in decades.

Jerry O’Connell pays moving tribute to Rob Reiner

play

Gerry O’Connell has paid a touching tribute to the man who launched his career.

The 51-year-old actor appeared on CBS’ Rob Reiner special, which aired on December 21, and gave a powerful insight into what the late director meant to him. Reiner directed the first film of O’Connell’s career, 1986’s “Stand by Me.”

In the “Rob Reiner – A Lifetime” special, O’Connell broke down in tears while talking about Reiner’s kindness.

“Rob Reiner heard I was in Los Angeles and took me out to lunch,” he said. “He didn’t have to do that. You know what I’m saying? It’s been a few months since the movie came out, and he’s been a busy guy. He took me out to lunch when I was 12 years old, just to say, ‘Thank you so much.’

In a choked voice, he added, “That lunch meant a lot to me. It’s all about the things I want my kids to hear.”

Elsewhere in the special, O’Connell described Reiner as “the greatest director of all time” and said, “I owe everything in my life to being on ‘Stand by Me,'” and recalled how Reiner encouraged him to be himself on set.

O’Connell starred as Vern in the classic coming-of-age film Stand by Me, co-starring Wil Wheaton, Corey Feldman, and River Phoenix. He was 11 years old when he shot this film, and this was his film debut.

O’Connell previously told People magazine in 2017 that making “Stand by Me” was “one of the best experiences of my life,” adding, “We spent a summer just walking around in the woods and goofing around. Rob was really good at rehearsing with us. I didn’t even know we were rehearsing. I thought we were playing a game.”

Mr. Reiner, who also directed a string of classic films including “When Harry Met Sally” and “The Princess Bride,” was found dead in his California home with his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, on December 14. Their son, Nick Reiner, 32, was charged with murder in connection with their deaths.

There was an outpouring of grief in Hollywood following the death. O’Connell previously shared a throwback childhood photo of herself and Reiner on Instagram, writing: “I love you, Rob. From the bottom of my heart.” The actor also reflected on Reiner’s influence on his life on “CBS Mornings” last week.

“He was like a father to me,” he said. “It’s just surreal.”

The CBS special also featured a number of other interviews with Reiner’s past collaborators, including “The Princess Bride” star Mandy Patinkin. After seeing the film for the first time, Patinkin broke down in tears as he recalled telling Reiner that he “never dreamed I would be able to be in something like this” and that Reiner “gave me that dream.”

Reiner was honored again over the weekend during the Christmas episode of “Saturday Night Live.” Near the end of the show, photos of the actors and director appeared on the screen. Reiner became the third host of “SNL” in October 1975.

The Epstein Files, Christmas, Vacation, NCAA Volleyball, Jake Paul, Turning Point: Daily Briefing

Welcome to the daily briefing! Here’s this morning’s breaking news.

nicole farato Here’s the news you need to know this Monday of the holiday week. We discuss the recent drop of the Epstein files, the story of one Lithuanian woman’s immigration detention, and why so many Americans choose hotels over their homes for vacation travel. ⛄So, have you ever tried calling Santa?

Were there more questions than answers regarding Epstein?

The Justice Department on Friday released hundreds of thousands of documents related to sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein at a pivotal moment in a long-running case that has emerged as one of the most explosive issues of President Donald Trump’s second administration.

However, the lack of good search capabilities made it difficult to navigate the “Epstein Library” due to the large amount of material (see for yourself what was published). There was little mention of President Donald Trump in the release. And despite Congress-imposed deadlines, not all of the Epstein documents have been made public.

But the Justice Department’s long-awaited release raises important questions about how the investigation may have gone awry and what other evidence the government has about potential co-conspirators, lawmakers and victim advocates say.

Skip the room for a hotel stay

  • According to a recent report, 61% of Americans prefer staying in a hotel over a relative’s home for vacation.
  • Travelers cite the need for privacy and personal space as the main reasons for booking hotels.
  • Some families find that having their own space in a hotel makes the holiday season more relaxing and enjoyable.

Home may be where your heart is, but your suitcase is not. Some travelers visiting family for the holidays choose their hotel room instead of their mother’s home.

When New York-based Eric Katzman and his wife had only one child, they used to stay with friends and family, but now that their children are turning 13 and 10, they realized their family needed more space and privacy.

On Thanksgiving or Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, his family heads to a small coastal town in Florida to visit his in-laws, but now they book a nearby hotel for more room and privacy.

“When they were little, it was a little easier,” he told USA TODAY. “As the kids get older, they need more space.”

According to HotelTonight’s first-ever Vacation Trends Report, 61% of Americans would rather stay at a nearby hotel instead of at a friend or family member’s home during their vacation trip.

It may seem harsh at first, given the mainstream idea that holidays should be spent with loved ones. However, the report found that such privacy can be very helpful to vacationers and help avoid the terrible tensions between family members that tend to surface at this time of year.

“With the joy of the holiday season comes the rush of packing, airport congestion and vacation restrictions, so it’s no surprise that travelers seek personal space to escape the chaos,” Hotel Tonight general manager Ron Sandel said in a statement to USA TODAY.

After all, some travelers have found that having more space to themselves leads to a happier, more restful holiday season with family.

This is why some travelers choose hotels over staying with loved ones.

Pursuing more privacy

More than half of travelers choose a hotel room over a family home because they want more privacy, according to a report from HotelTonight.

Katzman and his family were staying at his in-laws’ home, and the rooms still leave a lot of room for improvement.

“I didn’t think it was real. I’d only seen it in movies and TV shows, but there’s a murphy bed,” he said. “If we were to stay there, we would be pulling out the air mattress, folding the couch, moving the coffee table, whatever the configuration.”

About three years ago, he started booking hotel rooms instead. And I realized it was better for the kids that way.

Staying in a hotel during your vacation has additional benefits. “We also asked users what hotel perks they absolutely must have during their stay,” Sandel said. “We found that they value an unparalleled hotel experience: 57% just want their own bed, 41% want quality linens and sheets, and 36% enjoy on-site restaurants and bars.”

Katzman agreed, adding that the pool gives the kids something to do and that for a family of four, “you can’t beat” the hotel’s included continental breakfast. “The free breakfast is a big help,” he said.

“It feels counterintuitive.”

Every Christmas, Chris Overman, his wife, and their 2-year-old son return to their native Netherlands, dividing their time between parents. This year only, for about half of the trip, the South Korean-based family will be staying in a hotel near Oberman’s parents’ home.

“After two trips that disrupted my sleep and constantly making sure (my son) didn’t throw anything breakable, my parents’ home wasn’t completely toddler-safe anymore. We realized we needed our own space,” he told USA TODAY.

Previously, the couple had set up a camping bed for their son at his parents’ home and folded it up when he wasn’t using it. Overman added that it was easier when her son was younger, but dealing with a toddler’s outburst of energy in a packed venue is difficult. By the end of these trips, the couple felt more exhausted than relaxed.

The hotel stay costs about $620 extra, but Overman said it’s worth the extra cost.

“This wasn’t an easy decision and it feels counterintuitive, but it’s allowed us to enjoy time with our family more, we have more energy ourselves, and it’s made our son’s trip a little easier overall,” he said.

The best age to receive Social Security, according to economists

0

For Americans of a certain age, this may not be the biggest question.

At what age should you start receiving Social Security? At 62? 65 years old? 70?

This question is important because your monthly Social Security check gets larger each time you wait to claim it, from age 62 to age 70.

As it turns out, from a purely financial perspective, there’s a simple answer to this question, and it can be found on Social Security’s website.

How much money you end up collecting in Social Security ultimately depends on how long you live. To answer that question, a good place to start is with the Social Security Life Expectancy Calculator.

You’ll quickly arrive at the correct calculation. But first, there’s a wrong calculation here.

The best age to claim Social Security if you live to age 74.8

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the average life expectancy is 74.8 years for American men and 80.2 years for women.

For men nearing retirement, it may seem prudent to use age 74.8 as the basis for calculating the ideal age to claim Social Security. And remember, the longer you delay claiming benefits, the bigger your monthly check will become.

Here’s a quick comparison of how much a retiree would receive in lifetime Social Security benefits if they died at age 74.8, depending on when their first benefit check was drawn. Use sample benefit amounts from the Social Security website.

A hypothetical retiree who is 62 years old can claim a monthly check worth $1,400. Assuming he lives to age 74.8, he will receive a check for 12.8 years, or 154 months. His total lifetime Social Security benefits will be approximately $215,600, not including cost-of-living adjustments.

Our retirees can claim a check for $1,733 at age 65. But he will only receive that check for 9.8 years. His total lifetime benefits will be reduced to about $204,500.

And the numbers go downhill from there. Our retirees will receive a check worth $2,480 by age 70, but only for 4.8 years. Lifetime benefits: approximately $143,800.

Based on this calculation, the typical American man would be wise to claim Social Security at age 62, the first year of eligibility.

And what do you think is the most popular age to claim Social Security?

Many retirees are doing just that. According to Bankrate’s analysis, 62 is the most popular age to receive Social Security.

The obvious reason so many Americans take Social Security early is because they need the money. According to multiple studies, the average American retires at age 62. Retirees are supposed to use savings, other assets, and income to supplement Social Security, but many Americans don’t save for retirement.

There are several other reasons retirees claim Social Security early.

“People say, ‘I want to get the money while I can. I don’t know how many years I have left to live,'” Motley Fool senior adviser Robert Brokamp told USA TODAY in early 2025.

Retirees also worry that benefit programs will be underfunded. “They’re concerned about Social Security being underfunded,” Brokamp said. Retirement trust funds are expected to run out of money within 10 years.

Some retirees take Social Security early because they feel they have no other choice. “A lot of people don’t have enough savings,” Monique Morrissey, a senior economist at the Economic Policy Institute, told USA TODAY in an interview in early 2025. “Also, drawing down savings makes people anxious, even if it’s the right thing to do.”

But both Brokamp and Morrissey think most retirees should wait until age 70 to claim Social Security. The reason for this is simple and lies in the longevity of humans.

The average life expectancy for American men, quoted earlier, is 74.8 years, which is true, but misleading.

This is the average life expectancy of a male at birth. As we get older, our lifespan increases. By the time an American man reaches age 62, his life expectancy is much longer.

The best age to claim Social Security if you live to age 83.6

According to the Social Security Calculator, the average life expectancy for an American man who turns 62 in early 2025 is 83.6 years. That means he could live another 21.6 years. Women on that birthday are expected to live to be 86.5 years old.

Now, let’s calculate how much money a hypothetical newly long-living man could withdraw from Social Security over the rest of his expected lifespan.

A hypothetical retiree can still claim a monthly check worth $1,400 at age 62. But now we assume he will live to be 83.6 years old. That means he will receive checks for 21.6 years, or 259 months. His total lifetime earnings, excluding cost-of-living adjustments, now total approximately $362,600.

A 65-year-old retiree can claim a check for $1,733. And now he will receive that check for 18.6 years. His total lifetime income amounts to approximately $386,500.

And the numbers go up from there. By age 70, our retirees will receive a check worth $2,480, which they can expect to claim for 13.6 years. Lifetime benefits: approximately $404,200.

“I’m not in the business of giving advice, but I can tell you about averages,” Gal Wetzstein, senior research economist at Boston University’s Center for Retirement Research, told USA TODAY in an interview in early 2025. “If you just look at average numbers, it’s better to postpone claiming as late as possible, until age 70.”

When is the best age for women to claim Social Security?

So let’s calculate when a woman should claim Social Security based on how long she expects to live.

For women, the decision is easier because women live longer.

The average life expectancy at birth for an American woman is 80.2 years.

A hypothetical female retiree who is 62 years old can claim a monthly check worth $1,400. Assuming she lives to age 80.2, she will receive a check for 18.2 years, or about 218 months. Her total lifetime Social Security benefits, not including cost-of-living adjustments, would be approximately $305,800.

Our retirees will receive a check worth $2,480 by age 70, but over a shorter period of 10.2 years. Lifetime benefits: approximately $303,600.

These lifetime benefits are more or less the same.

When the hypothetical woman reaches retirement age, her lifespan increases to 86.5 years.

A hypothetical retiree can still claim a monthly check worth $1,400 at age 62. But now we assume she will live to be 86.5 years old. That means she will receive checks for 24.5 years, or 294 months. Her total lifetime earnings, excluding cost-of-living adjustments, now total approximately $411,600.

Her lifetime benefit increases with age. By age 70, our retirees will receive a check worth $2,480, which they can expect to claim for 16.5 years. Lifetime benefit: approximately $491,000.

Living to 100: The “worst-case scenario” for retirement finances

In a 2022 research paper, three economic researchers concluded that more than 90% of Americans should wait until age 70 to claim Social Security to maximize benefits. Possible exceptions include people who are in desperate need of money or who are unlikely to live very long.

“Some people should wait, and some people will get pancreatic cancer,” Boston University economist and study co-author Lawrence Kotlikoff told USA TODAY in early 2025.

Kotlikoff urges most retirees to claim Social Security benefits at age 70, but the reason is not about life expectancy. In fact, he has accused the Social Security Administration of economic “misconduct” by posting a longevity calculator on its website.

For Kotlikoff, the reason for delaying enrollment in Social Security is based on maximum life expectancy, not average life expectancy. Kotlikoff said most retirees need to “plan to live to the maximum age of their lives.” In other words, your retirement plan should assume that you might live to be 100 years old.

“You have to think about the worst-case scenario,” he says. “You can’t play against odds.”

Kotlikoff said if you plan on living to 100, you should wait until age 70 to claim Social Security.

“Most households enroll in Social Security right after they retire, but that’s too early,” he said.

Maury Povich’s show left a legacy. Keep Memes Alive with Podcasts

As his “On Par” podcast and memes go viral on social media, Maury Povich speaks to USA TODAY about his accomplishments and future.

play

NEW YORK — Maury Povich is getting chills.

Povich doesn’t consider himself a celebrity, even though he’s a star in his own right and a talk show icon to generations of daytime TV viewers. But since starting his podcast, On Par, in 2025, he’s realized just how much the show (and the man named Maury) has influenced Maury.

“What surprised me most was that so many people knew me. I had no idea that,” Povich, 86, told USA TODAY. “I interviewed hip-hop artists and the next thing I knew was in their lyrics. I interviewed actors who were watching the show and athletes who were watching the show in the clubhouse but wouldn’t come to practice until they knew who their father was.”

That day, Povich pinched himself when he unexpectedly bumped into a fan, hip-hop mogul 50 Cent.

“I was walking down the aisle and all of a sudden this guy tried to hug me really hard, and it was 50 Cent, so I thought, ‘Are you kidding me?'” Povich says. “I couldn’t believe that my name and personality would spread this far.”

After a chance encounter at a taping of Sherri Shepherd’s daytime talk show, Povich has added the multihyphenate to his list of must-have guests on his podcast (in addition to wishlist stars like Jay-Z and Shaquille O’Neal, perhaps reaching the stars is a joint interview with Cardi B and Nicki Minaj to “settle differences”).

On Par, which began its second season in early December, gave Povich a chance to talk about herself, something the longtime talk show host was never allowed to do. Although he is “known,” most fans don’t get to see the real him. Conversations with celebrity guests, from William H. Macy and Today show host Craig Melvin to NBA All-Star Andre Drummond, opened the door.

“I’ve been in this industry for 60 years and this is the first time I’ve been able to talk about myself. I’ve never been able to do that before,” Povich said. “Podcasts allow you to talk about things and experiences you have had and compare them to the experiences of your guests.”

Maury Povich calls Connie Chung his ‘go-to personality’

His wife of 40 years, veteran newswoman Connie Chung, was the podcast’s first guest. However, Povich interviewed her somewhat reluctantly.

“I didn’t want her to wear it, but it was overruled,” he says. His reasoning? “Because you never know what she’s going to say. That’s how we’ve lived for 41 years. I’m completely surprised because you never know what she’s going to do or say.”

“No one had ever heard of podcasting,” said Povich, who started his career early in his career as a TV journalist covering local news across the country before founding the tabloid news magazine A Current Affair, which became Morley.

“I started out in the world of journalism and news. So my wife said, ‘No one knows what you did for 25 years before you started identifying the father of every child in the country. So why not go back and show people your talent and be able to interview people from all the facts of life?’ Her main advice was, ‘Don’t make fun of me,’ he says.

There’s a lot in tough love love Love for the two newsmakers, who married in 1984.

“She has been my go-to person all these years. I always thought of myself as Mr. Chong, and I still do,” he says. “She was a big star long before I was, but I don’t care.”

Morley’s meme, the enduring legacy of the podcast show

The next phase of his career saw Povich become something of a social media star, joining viral trends on TikTok and gaining new fans with his “Maury” clip, which found original viewers still screaming, “You’re not the father!” Even trending audio moments on talk shows.

“I’ve always believed that I’m just an extension of my audience, and if I get the chance, I’m going to ask them the same questions,” he says. “I really despised egos. For example, I’ve worked with people with big egos and seen it work over and over again. My wife and I like to call it ‘big egoism,’ and we’ve stayed away from that all our lives.”

It’s all about quality, Povich says.

“Throughout my life, the main theme has been to be a storyteller,” Povich says. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 50th Annual Daytime Emmy Creative Arts & Lifestyle Awards in 2023.

His storytelling began with the dramatic flair of daytime television during the “Maurey Povich Show” era, which ran from 1991 to 2022.

Beyond “the fact that I’m the longest-serving daytime talk show host in history,” Povich said, “one of the great things about this show” is that “there was no one better at DNA testing and lie detector tests.”

“A lot of people have tried, but I don’t think any program has done it better than us,” he says.

He recalls such shocks as when he discovered that his pregnant guest’s twins were from different fathers. However, he reunites with the mother of his children, gets married, has more children, and misses his father, who was with him for a long time.

Povich recalled “criticism from media critics” who said he “exploited” the show’s guests. “I’ve always said, ‘I don’t think we’re exploiting our guests.’ So I’m trying to prove to a man who denies he’s the father of this child, and I’m the father, because that child is more likely to live his life with two parents than one.

“And I’m truly grateful for what I did. I believe that to be true. And because I’ve been on the air so long, I was able to bring these families back 20 years later. And I was able to see that this man was actually involved in a child’s life.”

Povich’s barometer of success has evolved over time. Now, “I’m upright, I can walk around, I can play golf, and I can still think on two legs.”

But he remembers a time before fame. “I started working as an assistant TV and radio producer for the Washington Senators’ baseball station when I was 16 years old,” he says. “Then I got into the industry after college and said, ‘Look, if I can stay in this industry until I’m 50, I’ll consider myself successful.'” “And that was 35 years that I went on. Now, 36 years later, I’m still trying to deal with this issue.”

President Trump appoints Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as special envoy to Greenland

Denmark’s foreign minister summoned the U.S. ambassador on December 22, after President Donald Trump appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as the U.S. special envoy to Greenland.

Lars Lökke Rasmussen said in a statement that Landry’s appointment shows the White House’s continued interest in the strategically located Arctic island rich in natural resources. Denmark, a NATO ally of the United States, has repeatedly said Greenland is not for sale.

“We insist that everyone, including the United States, must respect the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark,” Rasmussen said. “Jeff understands how essential Greenland is to our national security and will strongly advance our interests in the safety, security and survival of our allies and indeed the world,” Trump said in a post on his social media website Truth Social the day before.

Although Greenland is administered by Denmark, the region has its own local government. Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen said in a separate statement that Greenland would decide its own future.

Tensions between Copenhagen and Washington have worsened as President Trump has expressed interest in taking control of Greenland. Earlier this month, Danish intelligence for the first time described the United States as a potential threat to national security, citing the Trump administration’s willingness to use economic and military coercion and pressure to “enforce its will, even against allies.”

Landry has served as governor of Louisiana since January 2024, and his term ends in 2028. “It is an honor to serve in this volunteer capacity to help make Greenland part of the United States,” Landry said in an X social post thanking President Trump for his role. “This in no way affects my position as Governor of Louisiana!” he added.

Landry is a former police officer who served as Louisiana’s attorney general before being elected governor. Greenland is about three times the size of Texas and has a population of about 57,000 people.

Marketing agency uses AI in workflows to serve more clients

0

Among many industries, it is marketing where AI is no longer a side project in an “innovation lab” but integrated into briefs, production pipelines, approvals, and media optimization. A WPP iQ post published in December based on a WPP and Stability AI webinar shows what the implementation of AI in daily work looks like.

Here we’re talking about focusing on the practical constraints that determine whether AI changes daily operations or simply adds layers of complexity and tools.

Brand accuracy and repeatable functionality

Marketing agency AI treats brand accuracy as an engineering subject. WPP and Stability AI point out that off-the-shelf models are “not trained on a brand’s visual identity,” so their output often looks generic. The solution for companies is fine-tuning, or training the model on brand-specific datasets so that the model learns the brand’s strategies such as style, look, and color. That way you can consistently reproduce these elements.

WPP’s Argos is a prime example. After fine-tuning the model for the retailer, the team explained how the model would recognize details beyond the characters, such as lighting and subtle shadows used in the brand’s 3D animation. Recreating these details can take time during production in the form of re-rendering and multiple approvals. As the AI output nears “done,” teams spend less time revising and more time shaping the narrative and adapting media to different channels.

Cycle time collapse (and calendar changes)

WPP and Stability AI note that traditional 3D animation may be too slow for reactive marketing. After all, cultural moments require immediate content, not cycles defined by weeks or months. In the Argos case study, WPP trained a custom model on two 3D toy characters to learn how the models look and behave, including details such as proportions and how the characters hold objects.

As a result, “high-quality images…are produced in minutes instead of months.”

Accelerated workflows move rather than eliminate production bottlenecks. As variations are generated faster, review, compliance, rights management, and distribution become constraints. These issues have always existed, but the speed and efficiency of AI in this context shows the difference between what is possible and the systems that are being integrated into workflows and accepted. Government agencies that want to transform their daily operations with AI need to go beyond simply adding technology as a new tool to redesigning their workflows around AI.

“AI front end” is essential

WPP and Stability AI point to a “UI issue” where creative teams are wasting time because interfaces to common tools are “disconnected, complex, and confusing,” forcing them to work around and constantly move assets between tools. The response is often a bespoke, brand-specific front end, with complex workflows taking place on the back end.

WPP positions WPP Open as a platform that encodes WPP’s proprietary knowledge into “globally accessible AI agents” that help teams plan, produce, create and sell media. Clearer handoffs between tools deliver operational benefits as work moves from brief to production, assets to activation, and performance signals back to plan.

Self-service capabilities transform agency operations

AI-powered marketing platforms are also becoming customer-enabled. On the operational side, agencies need to focus on parts of the workflow that clients can’t easily do self-service, such as designing brand systems, building tweaks, and ensuring governance is built in.

Governance from policy to workflow

Routine use of AI requires governance to be built into where work is done. Dentsu describes building a “walled garden,” a digital space where employees can safely prototype AI-enabled solutions and commercialize their best ideas. This reduces the risk of sensitive data being leaked and allows experiments to be moved to production systems.

Compress plans and insights

The operational impact is not limited to production environments. Publicis Sapient describes an AI-powered content strategy and plan that “turns months of research into minutes of insight” by combining large-scale language models with contextual knowledge and prompt libraries (PDF). Research and easy development compress work schedules, resulting in more client work and allowing agencies to respond quickly to changing culture and platform algorithms.

What will change for people?

Throughout these examples, the impact on marketing professionals is one of rebalancing and changing job descriptions. Spend less time on mechanical drafting, resizing, and versioning and more time on brand management. New operational roles will expand, including model trainer, workflow designer, and AI governance lead.

AI makes the biggest operational difference when agencies have customized models, a usable front end that enables smooth adoption (especially by clients), and an integrated platform that connects planning, production, and execution.

While the biggest advantages are speed and scale, the deeper change is that marketing delivery is becoming more like a software-enabled supply chain: standardized, flexible where needed, and measurable.
