Trump administration is investigating Brown shooting incident

  • The Trump administration is investigating Brown University for safety violations following the mass shooting.
  • The investigation focuses on whether the university complied with the federal Clery Act.
  • Brown University has placed its public safety director on administrative leave pending an external review.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Trump administration has launched an investigation into security protocols on the Brown University campus following the Dec. 13 mass shooting that left two students dead and nine others injured.

The investigation is looking into what happened on campus before and after the shooting, alleging the university may have violated federal law.

Secretary of Education Linda McMahon said on Social Media

What is the Trump administration researching at Brown University?

More specifically, the U.S. Department of Education announced that the Office of Federal Student Aid “will investigate whether Brown violated Section 485(f) of the Higher Education Act, also known as the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act (Clery Act), which requires institutions of higher education to meet certain campus safety and security-related requirements as a condition of receiving federal student aid.”

A statement posted by the Ministry of Education goes on to say:

“Hours after the shooting, public reports appear to indicate that Brown University’s campus surveillance and security systems were not up to adequate standards and that the suspect may have fled while the university was unable to provide useful information regarding the profile of the suspected assassin.”

“Additionally, numerous Brown students and employees have reported that the university’s emergency notifications regarding the active shooter have been delayed, raising serious concerns about the safety alert system. If true, these deficiencies constitute a serious violation of Brown’s responsibilities under federal law,” the statement continued.

The Department of Education ordered Brown to submit extensive records by Jan. 30, including criminal records, annual safety reports, and internal protocols for responding to emergency calls and proactively responding to active shooters.

The news comes as Brown University announced it would place Director of Public Safety Rodney Chatman on administrative leave while an outside investigation into the shooting is conducted. Former Providence Police Chief Hugh Clements has been named interim chief of the Brown Police Department.

“Deeply committed” to campus safety

President Donald Trump previously criticized the university for having “very few surveillance cameras” in a post on Truth Social.

Brown University President Christina Paxson said the university is “deeply committed” to campus safety and security. She said one of the university’s two emergency notification systems sent text messages and emails to 20,000 people after the shooting. She also said a second siren system was not activated for fear people would run for safety into the building where the shooting occurred.

Paxson also said there are 1,200 surveillance cameras on campus. Officials said the attack occurred in an older part of the facility with few or no cameras.

The investigation comes nearly a week after the body of a gunman also suspected of killing an MIT professor was found in the Boston area.

Police in Providence, Rhode Island, said Claudio Neves Valente, 48, entered a building used for Brown’s engineering and physics program on Dec. 13 and fired at least 44 shots from a 9 mm handgun, killing two students and wounding nine others.

He was found dead in a rented storage facility in Salem, New Hampshire, after a five-day search.

FDA approves Novo Nordisk’s weight loss drug Wegoby

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Dec. 22 approved a tablet version of Novo Nordisk’s weight loss drug Wigovy, the first daily oral medication to treat obesity.

Novo Nordisk says the once-daily pill, called the Wegovy pill, is the “first and only” oral GLP-1 drug, or glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist. GLP-1 drugs were first used to treat diabetes, but were later approved to treat obesity, which dramatically expanded the number of patients.

“WegoBe Pill is the next chapter in our decades of GLP-1 experience and is supported by the most affordable out-of-pocket price for a bariatric GLP-1 to date,” Dave Moore, Novo Nordisk’s executive vice president of U.S. operations, said in a statement. “We are preparing for a full-scale U.S. launch in early January 2026, and manufacturing is well underway at our North Carolina facility.”

This pill contains 25 milligrams of semaglutide, the same active ingredient in Wigovy and Ozempic injections. Novo Nordisk already sells Libersus, an oral semaglutide for type 2 diabetes.

The Wegovy pill was approved for chronic weight management in adults who are obese or overweight and have at least one associated health condition. GLP-1 drugs mimic natural hormones, lowering people’s appetite and helping them lose weight.

The approval of this tablet will give Novo Nordisk a boost in the market for oral medications for the treatment of obesity. The Danish drugmaker’s rival Eli Lilly is still reviewing its oral drug, which could be approved as early as late March.

Wegovy tablets will be available in the coming weeks

Novo Nordisk said in a news release that FDA approval of Wigovy tablets was based on the results of a 64-week late-stage medical study.

Results from the study, which included more than 300 adult participants, showed that participants who took the once-daily pill lost an average of 16.6% of their weight, compared to 2.7% for those who took a placebo.

The company noted that the pill is used in conjunction with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity in obese or overweight adults. Also, this tablet should be taken in the morning on an empty stomach, 30 minutes before eating, drinking, or using other oral medications.

Novo Nordisk said tablets with a starting dose of 1.5 milligrams will be available in early January.

Weight-loss drugs could expand access to obesity treatment

According to a survey released in October by the Gallup National Health and Welfare Index, the adult obesity rate in the United States has gradually declined from a record high of 39.9% in 2022 to 37% in 2025.

New research shows that injectable weight loss drugs such as Wegovy and Ozempic may be contributing to the decline. The survey found that GLP-1 drug use among both men and women has more than doubled in the past year, with 12.4% of respondents saying they used the drug, compared to 5.8% as of February 2024.

GLP-1 drugs were first approved to treat diabetes in 2005, making Novo Nordisk the first company approved to market a GLP-1 drug for weight loss. The FDA approved the daily injection Saxenda to treat obesity in 2014 and Wigovy in 2021.

In recent years, Novo Nordisk’s injectables Wegovy and Eli Lilly’s Zepbound have transformed obesity treatment around the world. Earlier this month, the World Health Organization released global guidelines for the use of GLP-1 drugs in the treatment of obesity.

WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that while drug therapy alone cannot solve the health crisis, “GLP-1 therapy can help millions of people overcome obesity and reduce the harms associated with it.”

Analysts say the weight-loss drug will address patient reluctance to injections, which some consider invasive, and expand access amid the high medical costs associated with obesity treatment.

“Pills are not a replacement for injections,” Christopher Chrisman, managing director and partner at consulting firm BCG, told Reuters. He added that some patients may prefer to continue with weekly injections.

“But tablets have clear advantages for some people. They’re convenient for travel and don’t require a refrigerator,” Chrisman said.

Announces transfer from Arrowhead to Kansas State

  • The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to receive approval to build a new stadium in Kansas.
  • The new stadium will be located in Wyandotte County and is expected to be completed by the 2031 season.
  • Plans for the new venue include a roof that will allow for annual events such as the Super Bowl and Final Four.

The Kansas City leaders are expected to cross the state line from Missouri into Kansas (for the next 10 years), with an official announcement scheduled for late Dec. 22, after key legislative committee meetings.

The eight-member Legislative Coordination Council (LCC) passed the bill needed for the green light on December 22 with bipartisan support. Kansas Governor Laura Kelly also hinted at a “special announcement” early on December 22nd.

The Chiefs continue to negotiate with the governments of Missouri and Kansas regarding their future home. Kansas City has played its home games at Arrowhead Stadium, located outside Kansas City, Missouri, since 1972.

Chiefs’ new stadium to be completed for 2031 NFL season

The exact location of the new stadium is unknown, but the site is not far from Kansas Speedway and is in Wyandotte County, home of Major League Soccer’s Sporting KC. The team’s current lease at Arrowhead Stadium expires after 2030, so the new stadium will be ready for the 2031 season.

Prior to the official announcement, Kelly and Chiefs owner Clark Hunt were seen wearing Chiefs jerseys, No. 31.

“Today is a special day in Kansas City Chiefs history,” Hunt said in a statement. “We are excited to partner with the state of Kansas and bring a world-class stadium to our fans. This project represents another step in our legacy of innovation and fan-first spirit that began with our father, Lamar Hunt. The stadium, practice facility and surrounding development will benefit the entire region and further elevate Kansas City in the eyes of the nation and the world.”

The venue will have a roof and will be a year-round venue, and the stadium will be designed to host sports’ biggest events, such as the Final Four and the Super Bowl. Chiefs President Mark Donovan said the new stadium will have a seating capacity of about 65,000 to 68,000 people.

“The benefits to the entire region will be immeasurable,” Hunt said in a letter to Chief Kingdom.

He continued, “Of course, it will be hard to say goodbye to Arrowhead Stadium in a few years. Like many of you, Arrowhead brings back family memories and unforgettable moments. But the truth is, you are what makes Chiefs game days special. The seats don’t make noise, the concrete doesn’t intimidate opponents, and you don’t have barbecues in the parking lot. You do it.”

The state will provide up to 70% of the stadium’s funding, with public-private partnerships officially at 60% to 40%, and the Hunt family contributing $1 billion that can be promoted through special bonds, according to the Kansas City Star. The project has an estimated total cost of $3 billion. The governor’s office said the construction will not impose new taxes on Kansan residents. Estimates indicate that the new stadium would involve approximately $1.8 million in public investment and generate an economic impact of approximately $4.4 billion.

Kansas Governor Kelly said, “This agreement to bring the Chiefs to Kansas takes our state to the next level. With this new stadium, we are creating thousands of jobs, attracting tourists from around the world, attracting young people, and most importantly, we continue to make Kansas the best place to raise a family in America.” “This is a game-changer for Kansas and shows America and the world that the future of our state is very bright.”

The Chiefs also plan to move their training facility to another Kansas City suburb, Olathe, Kansas. That project currently has no timeline.

President Trump renews call to reclaim Greenland for U.S. national security

0

President Donald Trump told reporters on December 22 that his appointed special envoy would “lead the attack.”

play

President Donald Trump has renewed his call for the occupation of the vast Danish-ruled island of Greenland, adding that a special envoy he has appointed to the Arctic island will “lead the attack.”

On December 22, when President Trump announced that the United States would build a “new ‘Golden Fleet'” of “Trump-class” battleships, he told reporters, “We need Greenland for our national security,” adding, “You look up our shores, you look down, you see Russian and Chinese ships everywhere. We need that for our national security. We have to have it.”

President Trump’s comments came shortly after he appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as the United States’ special envoy to Greenland. President Trump suggested he appointed Landry because “he’s a deal-maker type of guy.”

In response to Landry’s appointment, Denmark was furious at President Trump’s aim to seize the island and summoned the US ambassador.

“Out of nowhere, we now have a Special Representative of the President of the United States who, according to him, is tasked with taking over Greenland. Of course, this is completely unacceptable,” Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen told TV2.

At a December 22 press conference, President Trump denied Denmark’s claims to Greenland.

“Denmark has not spent a penny on the ground and there is no military protection,” the president said. “They say Denmark was there by boat 300 years ago or something. Well, I think we were there by boat too.”

Greenland, a former Danish colony with a population of about 57,000, has the right to declare independence under a 2009 agreement but remains heavily dependent on fishing and Danish subsidies. The region’s strategic location between Europe and North America makes it a key hub for the United States’ ballistic missile defense system, while its mineral wealth has increased U.S. interest in reducing dependence on Chinese exports.

In a statement responding to Landry’s appointment, Greenland Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen said the island would decide its own future.

President Trump also made it clear that the United States has no interest in Greenland for reasons related to its mineral resources.

“We have so many mines for minerals, oil and everything else, we have more oil than any other country in the world,” Trump said. “Everything has to be resolved.”

Rob Reiner’s children share updates on memorial service

A week after Rob Reiner and Michelle Singer Reiner were found dead in their home, their families say they are planning a memorial service for them.

Their children, Jake Reiner and Romy Reiner, revealed in a Dec. 22 statement to the Los Angeles Times and People that information about the service would be released.

“Jake and Romy Reiner remain grateful for the outpouring of love and support they have received. They plan to share information about a memorial service to honor their parents at a later date,” the statement read, according to People.

USA TODAY has reached out to a representative for Reiners for comment.

Jake and Romy’s 32-year-old brother Nick Reiner remains in jail without bail after being arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has charged Nick Reiner with “fatally stabbing” his parents, who were found dead in their Brentwood, Calif., home on the afternoon of Dec. 14.

A preliminary investigation by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office found that the director and his producing partner’s wife died from “multiple sharp impact injuries.” The cause of death was determined to be homicide.

Nick Reiner’s arraignment is scheduled for January 7th.

Romy and Jake Reiner previously spoke to TMZ and People in a Dec. 17 statement about the “unimaginable pain” caused by their parents’ deaths.

“Words cannot describe the unimaginable pain that we are experiencing every moment of every day,” they said. “The horrifying and devastating loss of our parents, Rob Reiner and Michelle Reiner, is something no one should ever have to experience. They were more than just our parents, they were our best friends.”

“We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support we have received from family and friends, as well as people from all walks of life,” the statement continued. “We are now asking for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave.”

Rob Reiner is also survived by Tracy Reiner, a daughter from ex-wife Penny Marshall, whom Rob Reiner adopted.

How many Hardee’s stores are scheduled to close by the end of 2025?

0

Dozens of Hardee’s stores across the United States are set to close after one of its largest franchisees allegedly failed to make the latest payment.

ARC Burger, which is managed by High Bluff Capital Partners, is currently suing Hardee over failure to pay franchisees and other contractual obligations with the company, according to court documents obtained by USA TODAY. In response to the lawsuit filed last month, ARC Burger has decided to close its Hardee’s locations.

In an emailed statement to USA TODAY, Hardee’s Restaurants confirmed the closure of all franchised restaurants.

“These closures are the result of ARC Burger’s failure to cure its defaults under the franchise agreement, despite strong sales and months of continued attempts to reach a resolution that would keep these restaurants open,” Hardee’s said.

According to the complaint, ARC Burger owns 77 Hardee’s locations in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Missouri, Montana, South Carolina and Wyoming.

Closed lawsuit

According to court documents, ARC Burger began failing to make payments in December 2024.

“As a result of ARC’s failure to make timely payments over several months, HR (Hardy’s) has notified ARC that it is in default under the franchise agreement and sublease agreement,” the complaint states.

Hardee’s said in its lawsuit that unpaid debts include royalties, advertising fund contributions, technology fees, training fees, rent and taxes.

“Wherever ARC’s profits go, they do not apply to past due or ongoing fees owed (to Hardee’s),” the burger giant argued in its lawsuit.

ARC Burger could not be reached for comment regarding Hardee’s closure.

JD Vance slams Nick Fuentes for insulting his wife Usha

play

Vice President J.D. Vance over the weekend slammed political activist Nick Fuentes for making derogatory comments about his wife, Usha Vance.

“Let me be clear: Anyone who attacks my wife, whether their name is Jen Psaki or Nick Fuentes, can eat my food,” Vance said in an interview published in the online magazine UnHerd. “That is my official policy as Vice President of the United States.”

Fuentes, who the Anti-Defamation League describes as a “white supremacist” whose “anti-Semitic commentary primarily focuses on themes of Jewish power and Holocaust denial,” used ethnic slurs against Usha Vance, an Indian American from a Hindu family, and called J.D. Vance a “racial traitor” in one of his livestreams.

USA TODAY has reached out to Vance and Fuentes for comment.

What did Jen Psaki say about Usha Vance?

Psaki, a former White House press secretary under President Joe Biden, suggested in October that second wives needed to be rescued from their husbands on the “I’ve Had It” podcast.

“I always wonder what’s going on in my wife’s mind,” said Psaki, who currently hosts a show on MSNOW. “Are you okay? Blink four times. Come here and we’ll save you.”

JD and Usha Vance married in 2014 and have three children. Before becoming second lady, Usha Vance was an attorney who clerked for Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts and future Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh when they were on the U.S. Court of Appeals.

“I think it’s disgusting.”

On Sunday, Dec. 21, the Vice President spoke at Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest conference in Phoenix, Arizona. The rally was the conservative group’s first annual summit since founder Charlie Kirk was shot and killed in September.

“Anti-Semitism and all forms of ethnic hatred have no place in the conservative movement,” J.D. Vance told UnHerd. “I think it’s disgusting to attack someone because they’re white, because they’re black, because they’re Jewish.”

Brooklyn Beckham may be putting distance between himself and his family.

Former model brother Cruz Beckham took to Instagram to reveal a Daily Mail report that claimed his brother had been blocked by his parents Victoria and David Beckham. The tabloid’s headline read: “David Beckham and Victoria Beckham have unfollowed their estranged son Brooklyn, 26, after it was revealed he will be spending Christmas with his wife Nicole Peltz’s billionaire parents amid family rift.”

Cruz Beckham, 20, responded to the report in an expired Instagram Story on Saturday, December 20th, updating the Daily Mail article. “Not true. My mom and dad will never unfollow their son. Let’s get our facts straight,” Cruise Beckham wrote. “They woke up and were blocked…and so was I.”

USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for David, Victoria and Brooklyn Beckham for comment.

Back in September, 26-year-old Brooklyn Beckham appeared to weigh in on continued media speculation about a family feud in an interview with the Daily Mail, but declined to comment directly.

“There’s always going to be people who say negative things, but I have a very supportive wife,” Beckham, 26, said of his wife Nicola Peltz. “Me and her, we’re just doing what we do. We’re just putting our heads down and working. And we’re happy.”

Since Beckham and Peltz tied the knot in April 2022, rumors have swirled about the status of their relationship with the Beckham family, from scrutiny of the couple’s absence from family events to allegations of tension with Beckham’s younger brother Romeo.

In August, three years after their wedding in Palm Beach, Florida, Beckham and Peltz revealed they renewed their wedding vows in an emotional ceremony. Days after David, 50, and Victoria Beckham, 51, caused an uproar after they weren’t pictured in their vow renewal ceremony and wedding party, Victoria Beckham has shared photos from their European vacation, showing David, Victoria and Brooklyn’s siblings Cruise, Harper and Romeo enjoying time together. USA TODAY reached out to the Beckhams for comment at the time.

Brooklyn Beckham also attracted attention for being the only one of Beckham’s children to be absent from David Beckham’s knighthood ceremony in November.

How Erica Kirke became America’s most publicized widow

0

Charlie Kirk’s wife Erica, once Miss Arizona USA, is now the world’s most famous widow. She attracted both criticism and sympathy.

play

Erika Kirke, with her blonde hair pulled back and wearing a brown and ivory silk ensemble, sat opposite rap superstar Nicki Minaj as the host spoke about her transition from pro-LGBTQ+ activist to President Donald Trump ally.

At AmericaFest, a convention founded by her husband Charlie Kirk’s organization Turning Point USA, Kirk asked some of the genre’s most famous women about their transition to Republican politics.

“So why are you talking about politics now?” she asked on Dec. 21.

The same could be said for Kirk. Kirk, who was known primarily in right-wing circles before September, became known as America’s most famous widow and woman after her spouse’s assassination.

The former Miss Arizona USA has garnered both criticism and sympathy in the three months since her husband’s death. She also sparked controversy and conspiracy theories.

Miss Arizona pageant girl to Mrs. Kirk

Born Erica Franzbe, Kirk grew up in Scottsdale, Arizona in a devout Catholic family. She attended Notre Dame Preparatory High School and was later inducted into the Alumni Hall of Fame. A year before graduating in 2007, she founded the charity Everyday Heroes Like You. The organization sought to focus on people who “have a philanthropic desire to make a real difference in the lives of others.”

He played college basketball at Regis University in Denver during the 2008-2009 season and earned degrees at Arizona State University and Liberty University. In 2012, she won the title of Miss Arizona and also competed in Miss USA. Described as a “borderless soul,” Kirk has lived in New York City, Los Angeles, and China, and launched her Christian-inspired clothing line, Proclaim Streetwear.

In 2019, Kirk briefly appeared apart from the main cast on Bravo’s seasonal hit show Summer House, which depicts New York bachelorettes getting messy in their sprawling mansions in the Hamptons. She first met Charlie Kirk in 2018. The couple got married on May 8, 2021 and went on to have two children. Kirk currently has a 3-year-old girl and a 1-year-old boy.

Kirk wrote about marriage and motherhood on social media, hiding the names and faces of her children from the public. Kirk wrote in an Instagram caption on May 6th about visiting Sesame Place, a Sesame Street-themed theme park in Philadelphia and San Diego, with his children.

“Every day I’m with them I get to relive the first moments of my own childhood that I didn’t even know I had lost,” Kirk wrote. “Four sacred years. My best friend, my warrior, my calm in any storm,” Kirk posted on the couple’s anniversary this year. “Eternity is ours,” she added.

Before his death, Charlie Kirk, like his absentee wife, advocated for young women to pursue pregnancies before entering the profession and return to work after giving birth.

“This widow’s cry will be heard all over the world.”

On September 10, the sun was shining brightly on Utah Valley University’s campus in Orem, 40 minutes from Salt Lake City, as Kirk’s husband Charlie, a child prodigy turned powerhouse of American conservatism, debated with students, a signature part of his combative style that has helped him garner millions of followers on social media.

At that moment, a single gunshot rang out, shocking the 3,000 onlookers and the nation. Authorities arrested the lone gunman, identified as Tyler Robinson. Many on the right mourned the death of the TPUSA founder. Others pointed to past statements by activists as tinged with racism, homophobia, Islamophobia and misogyny.

Two days later, Kirk appeared on a video livestream hosted by Turning Point to address the nation.

“The perpetrators of her husband’s assassination have no idea what they did,” Kirk said on September 12, adding, “This widow’s cry will echo like a war cry around the world.” She told the millions watching that her husband’s campus tours would continue, as well as his radio and podcast shows.

Turning Point announced on September 18 that its board of directors unanimously elected Kirk as its new CEO and chairman of the board. “During preliminary discussions, Charlie expressed to multiple executives that this is what he would want in the event of his death,” the group said in a statement. And Kirk became one of the most notable women in America.

crime? married? Erica Kirk’s gaffe makes headlines

At a large September 21 memorial service in Glendale, Arizona, Kirk forgave her husband’s shooter. “I forgive him,” she said. “I forgive him because that’s what Christ did and that’s what Charlie would do,” Kirk told a crowd of nearly 100,000 people. “The answer to hate is not hate. The answer we know from the gospel is love.”

Kirk, who was often seen dabbing her eyes with a folded white napkin, attended the White House ceremony awarding her husband the Presidential Medal of Freedom on October 14 and also spoke at the Fox News Patriot Awards. She then appeared with Vice President J.D. Vance at a TPUSA event at Ole Miss in Oxford, Mississippi. After she hugged Vance on stage, their hug went viral, sparking unsubstantiated speculation online about an affair.

Kirk became the source of even more rampant rumors, some of which were introduced by conservative influencer Candace Owens. Social media users criticized Kirk’s actions and questioned why he would defend her publicly instead of spending private time at home with the couple’s two children.

She appeared on the New York Times Dealbook Summit on Dec. 3, hosted by Andrew Ross Sorkin and featuring wide-ranging conversations with newsmakers. Conspiracy theorists have suggested that she had inside information about her husband’s death.

“If people think I’m just going to wilt, I’m not going to sit in a corner and cry and be in a fetal position. It’s my duty to my husband, it’s my absolute honor, and I’m never going to back down. So my message to them is, stop,” Kirk told Fox News’ Harris Faulkner on Dec. 10 against spreading such conspiracies. Kirk was there to promote her husband’s last book, “Stop, In God’s Name: Why Honoring the Sabbath Will Change Your Life.”

Not surprisingly, Kirk seems to have adapted to both public speaking and public life. “Despite the devastating loss of my wonderful husband, Charlie Kirk, at UVU, Caleb continued to carry that same regret,” Kirk said at AmFest, in a video that was widely circulated by critics over the weekend. “Sorry, Gift,” she said, finally correcting herself, “Guts.”

“It’s been a long day,” Kirk said with a laugh. She looked back at the student and quipped, “Trust me, you’re not a scammer, honey,” before telling him, “It’s okay.” This time, she seemed unfazed by the upcoming criticism.

It’s a turning point for Kirk.

“Drive Home for Christmas” singer dies at 74

0

Chris Rea, the British blues-rock singer known for hits such as “Fool (If You Think It’s Over),” “Let’s Dance” and the holiday classic “Driving Home for Christmas,” has died. He was 74 years old.

A statement shared on Rhea’s social media pages said she passed away on Monday, December 22, after being hospitalized for a “short illness.” Additional details regarding Rhea’s condition were not released.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Chris,” the statement said. “Chris’s music has created the soundtrack for many lives, and his legacy will live on through the songs he left behind.”

Rhea has battled numerous health issues throughout her life, including being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at the age of 33 and suffering a stroke in 2016.

USA TODAY has reached out to Rea’s representatives for comment.

Born in Middlesbrough, England, to an Italian father and an Irish mother, Lea initially aspired to become a journalist and attended St Mary’s University in her hometown.

After purchasing his first guitar, Leah began developing his musicality in his early 20s, drawing inspiration from blues and rock musicians such as Charlie Patton, Blind Willie Johnson, and Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh. He also immersed himself in genres such as Delta blues, gospel blues, and light orchestral music.

The fast-rising rocker discovered his potential as a vocalist in the early ’70s, after joining the band Magdalene in 1973. They started singing the day after the group’s lead singer couldn’t come to the performance. Rare went on to form another band, the Beautiful Losers, but they disbanded in 1977.

Rare also signed a solo record deal with Magnet Records and released her debut single, “So Much Love” in 1974. His first album, “Whatever Happened to Benny Santini?,” followed in 1978 and produced the hit song “Fool (If You Think It’s Over),” which peaked at number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The following year, Rare’s musical breakthrough was cemented when she was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best New Artist.

After a series of commercially lackluster albums, including 1979’s Deltics, 1980’s Tennis, and 1981’s Chris Rea, Rea’s career began to pick up steam again in the mid-’80s, beginning with 1983’s Water Signs.

His 1989 album The Road to Hell topped the UK album chart, and its title song peaked at number 11 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Airplay chart.

Leah has also found success in the world of holiday music. His song “Driving Home for Christmas” was originally released as the B-side of the 1986 single “Hello Friend”, but became a surprise hit when it was re-released on Rare’s first compilation album, “New Right Through Old Windows” in 1988.

This feel-good pop-rock track maintains a steady presence in the UK charts, peaking at number 10 in the singles chart in 2022, more than 30 years after its release.

Rare’s musical output was prolific throughout the ’90s and 2000s, with the singer releasing 13 albums between 1991 and 2008. Their last album “One Fine Day” was released in 2019.

Despite an illustrious career, Rhea told Saga in June 2024 that she had always had a “difficult relationship with fame.”

“None of my heroes were rock stars. I once arrived in Hollywood for the Grammys and thought I’d run into important people like Ry Cooder and Randy Newman. But there were a lot of pop stars around me,” Leah said. “The celebrity thing was completely wrong in the sense that everyone tried to outdo each other. They didn’t try.”

Fans ‘devastated’ by Chris Rea’s death

Several of Ray’s devoted fans took to social media to mourn his death and pay tribute to his musical legacy.

“‘Driving Home for Christmas’ is playing in my car right now. It’s always been my favorite Christmas song,” @nils.rmb wrote on Instagram. “Thank you for the music, Chris Rea. You will never be forgotten.”

@olliew2401 commented, “I’ve never been so upset by the death of a musician.” “I was really devastated.”

“Thank you Chris Rea for your amazing music and the joy it has brought to so many,” @aestheticprocedure wrote. “Rest in peace💔🙏”

@vkayproduction commented, “I remember your music and voice from when I was a kid.” “You are one of the greatest musicians who influenced millions of people.”

“I always have[‘Driving Home for Christmas’]on loop when I drive home for Christmas. It’s going to be bittersweet this year,” wrote @fbaphil. “Rest in peace Chris. Thank you for the music and memories.”

What will inflation be like next year? The answer is interesting.

0

play

Americans tired of high prices may find some relief in 2026.

or not.

Many analysts believe the economy is finding its footing after several shocks, including from tariffs and the long tail of supply caused by the pandemic. However, some believe that we will see even greater price fluctuations, leading to inflation that can only be contained by a downturn in the economy. Either way, it looks like this year will continue to be a difficult time for U.S. consumers and difficult decisions to make.

bull incident

Many strategists who believe inflation will moderate see it as a sign that the broader economy is gradually slowing.

“A cooling labor market and slowing consumer demand will help ease inflation,” analysts at LPL Financial said in their 2026 forecast.

They predict that PCE inflation (a slightly different measure from the better-known consumer price index) will slowly decline to 2.5% by the end of 2026, from the most recent reading of 2.8%.

Jennifer Lee, senior economist at BMO Capital Markets, agrees. Too many policies in Washington are hurting economic growth, so there’s no way to beat prices, Lee told USA TODAY.

“The softening employment environment will limit what companies can do in terms of raising prices,” he said. He said a deal or a moratorium on tariffs would help, but it would also slow conditions in sectors that rely on migrant labor, such as agriculture and construction.

A “soft” employment situation doesn’t necessarily mean bad news, Lee said. She doesn’t foresee mass layoffs, and as the workforce is naturally shrinking, she thinks workers will have some more leverage.

Some strategists, like those at LPL Financial, expect economic growth to slow in the first half of 2026 and accelerate in the second half of the year as the pro-growth elements of the law widely known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” take effect.

Some predict that OBBBA’s huge tax rebates will bring forward economic growth at the beginning of the year, before slowing down thereafter. As USA TODAY previously reported, the IRS is expected to send an average refund of $3,278 to 104 million taxpayers due to the tax law change.

bear incident

Analysts say the outlook for the economy is less positive, with analysts expecting inflation to remain high or rise again.

“It’s very hard not to expect higher inflation,” said Steve Blitz, chief U.S. economist at GlobalData. “Inflation is going to get higher. The question is when.”

Blitz believes a smaller workforce, larger tax refunds and higher budget deficits are all contributing to higher inflation. However, these factors are likely to be masked by the economic downturn at the start of the year, he said.

“I think the economy is weaker than the key data indicates,” Blitz told USA TODAY. “I keep an eye on the employment statistics. There’s no way the U.S. economy will expand with fewer people employed. That’s not going to happen.”

Schwab analysts agree. In their 2026 outlook, they pointed out that economic demand, rather than supply shocks, is causing inflation to creep up.

“If fiscal aid expands, the labor market holds up, and consumer spending gets back on track, there is some upside risk to inflation next year, likely limiting the Fed’s rate cuts to two or three,” they write. However, they added, that scenario would be unexpected if a “recession-like weakening of the labor market” were to occur.

But what Mr. Schwab says about the overall economic situation is sobering.

“The current economic and market cycle is characterized by instability, not just uncertainty,” the analysts wrote. “Uncertainty generally assumes something unknown, such as an election, war, or a Federal Reserve decision. Instability arises from the inner workings of the system itself.”

What are some examples of instability? “Tariffs and their uneven application. Housing supply is frozen because existing homeowners are locked into low mortgage rates and cannot move without taking out new mortgages at higher rates. Immigration movements are changing labor supply.”

The constantly changing situation makes it difficult for forecasters to consider the future, the analysts added. Anyone who manages a household’s finances, from policymakers to the average American, might agree.

Clinton demands release of all Epstein documents to avoid ‘innuendo’

0

Clinton’s press secretary argued that selectively releasing documents such as photos of the former president could hint at wrongdoing involving people who have been “repeatedly arrested.”

play

WASHINGTON – Former President Bill Clinton’s press secretary has called on the Justice Department to release all documents related to the investigation into sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein to avoid intimations of wrongdoing against people who have been “repeatedly acquitted.”

Documents released by the Justice Department on Friday under the new law included photos of Clinton, including one in a hot tub and one with celebrities.

But the department was criticized for withholding hundreds of thousands of pages of additional documents from women who accused Epstein of abuse, members of Congress and Clinton’s chief of staff, Angel Urena.

Urena said in a social media post on Monday, Dec. 22, that there was no need to protect Clinton by releasing all remaining documents that mention or include photos of her.

But “selective disclosures to hint at wrongdoing” would confirm “pervasive suspicions” that the disclosures were about “innuendo” hinting at wrongdoing, not transparency, Urena said.

Congress approved and President Donald Trump signed a bill requiring the release by Dec. 19 of all department files that do not include the names of alleged victims, depictions of child sexual abuse, or anything that would adversely affect the prosecution of a case.

However, in releasing hundreds of thousands of documents, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche acknowledged on Friday, December 19, that hundreds of thousands more documents are still being reviewed. He also told Congress that some documents could be withheld under legal privilege, which covers things like lawyers’ internal deliberations and communications with clients.

Blanche said more documents would be released in the coming weeks. The law requires the ministry to list the documents that have been withheld from release and to explain the reasons for the decision within 15 days.

Two members of Congress threatened to hold Attorney General Pam Bondi in contempt over the release of some of the documents. But Bondi said the Trump administration is the most transparent in history.

In November, President Trump asked the Justice Department to investigate the relationship between Clinton and Epstein. The former president faces a subpoena from the House Oversight Committee.

But Urena pointed to a Dec. 16 Vanity Fair interview with Trump’s chief of staff Susie Wiles, saying Trump was wrong to say that Clinton visited Epstein’s private Caribbean island, Little St. James.

“There is no evidence,” Wiles told Vanity Fair. “The president was wrong about that.”

Swimmers missing and beaches closed after shark spotted in California

Authorities continued to search for missing swimmers on Monday, Dec. 22, after shark sightings were reported in Northern California and beaches were closed over the weekend.

Around noon on Sunday, Dec. 21, the Pacific Grove Police Department and Monterey Fire Department responded to a report of a missing swimmer off Lovers Point, according to a joint statement from the cities of Pacific Grove, Monterey and the U.S. Coast Guard.

“Two witnesses indicated that the swimmer may have encountered the shark while swimming offshore near Lovers Point,” the release states.

Lover’s Point is located in Pacific Grove, a coastal city near Monterey, about 185 miles south of San Francisco.

Emergency response teams then began a search and rescue operation with assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office and California State Parks, but the swimmer had still not been found by 8 p.m. local time.

Rescue teams conducted a search operation but reported that they had found no trace of the swimmer and planned to continue the search on Monday, December 22nd.

The swimmer’s family has been “informed of the situation,” the statement continues.

Authorities have not released the name of the missing swimmer.

“There’s a human body in your mouth.”

Pacific Grove Police Commander Brian Anderson said the missing swimmer was a 55-year-old woman with blue eyes and blonde hair who was swimming “with a regular group that meets in the area every Sunday,” according to KSBW-TV.

The group entered the water as usual, and witnesses on the shoreline reported seeing a “large splash” when the woman went missing, police said, which caused the other swimmers to “return to shore, fearing they had been attacked by a shark. All members of the group returned safely, except for the missing swimmer.”

Christopher Sappy of the U.S. Coast Guard reported that a witness described a frightening encounter between a man and a shark in the water.

“The person who reported the shark sighting claimed to have seen the shark break the water with something that looked like a human in its mouth,” Sappy told SF Gate. “Then they saw the shark sink below the surface without surfacing.”

Authorities could not confirm whether there was a connection between the missing woman and the reported shark sighting.

Lover’s Point Beach and nearby swimming spots are closed

Monterey’s Lover’s Point Beach, Maccabee Beach and San Carlos Beach will remain closed through Tuesday, Dec. 23 as a precaution, officials in both cities announced.

According to a notice posted on social media, beach advisories remain in effect for the following locations:

  • Asilomar State Beach
  • Monterey Municipal Beach
  • del monte beach
  • Monterey State Beach

Shark attacks in California so far this year

As of Monday, Dec. 22, there have been three reported shark attacks on humans in California this year.

There were no deaths, according to the report.

According to data from the International Shark Attack File maintained by the Florida Museum of Natural History, an average of 65 shark attacks are recorded each year worldwide.

Last year, 47 people were bitten in unprovoked attacks.

Jim Beam to suspend production at main Kentucky distillery in 2026

The maker of the popular Kentucky bourbon brand Jim Beam will indefinitely suspend operations at its flagship distillery starting in January 2026, company officials told the Louisville Courier-Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network, on Dec. 21.

The distillery, located on the James B. Beam campus in Clermont, Kentucky, will remain closed until Beam Suntory officials “take the opportunity to invest in site enhancements,” an official statement said.

“We are constantly evaluating production levels that best meet consumer demand and recently met with our team to discuss 2026 production volumes,” company officials said in a statement provided to the Courier-Journal.

The company’s Fred B. Noe Craft Distillery, also located in Clermont, is scheduled to remain open until 2026. Operations will also continue at the Booker Noe Distillery in Boston, Kentucky.

The Clermont campus visitor center and restaurant, The Kitchen Table, are scheduled to open throughout 2026, company officials said.

Officials have not announced any layoffs due to distillery closures. Beam Suntory employs approximately 1,000 people in Kentucky.

2025 Flu Symptoms and How to Stay Healthy During the Holidays

0

play

Everyone is home during the holidays, and so are germs.

Maybe the disease is knocking at your door along with your party guests.

It’s cold and flu season, and common winter illnesses like the flu, COVID-19, and norovirus are hitting Americans hard, especially during this holiday week when we gather with friends and family to celebrate. Large indoor parties, cold weather, and crowded spaces are perfect conditions for the spread of unwanted diseases.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other health organizations are working to trace cases to help families stay healthy this season and into the winter.

Here’s what we know so far about cases and how to avoid getting sick.

Latest symptoms and data on norovirus

Norovirus, commonly known as gastroenteritis, is actually not related to influenza. The virus is the leading cause of foodborne illness in the United States, causing vomiting and diarrhea, according to the CDC. The most common symptoms are:

  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • stomach cramps and pain
  • In some cases, fever, headache, and body aches may occur.

Wastewater data maintained by WasteWaterSCAN, a Stanford University-led disease spread tracking tool, reports that norovirus activity is at “moderate” nationally and has been declining since Dec. 1. Trackers say most of the cases are concentrated in the Northeast and Midwest. However, to prevent the spread of infection, we all need to take precautions such as washing our hands and preparing food to limit this highly contagious disease.

Meanwhile, the number of people infected with influenza is rapidly increasing.

According to CDC data, influenza cases are on the rise. During the week of December 13, 15% of influenza tests were reported as positive to the National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System.

WasteWaterSCAN said influenza A prevalence is “high” across the country, with some regions worse than others, with the Northeast and Midwest hardest hit.

And this trend is likely to increase further in the future. As of Dec. 16, the CDC projects that influenza infections are increasing or likely to increase in 47 states.

And the new strain of influenza could make the situation even worse. This variant, known as subclade K, is derived from influenza A, the most common influenza-causing virus, and H3N2, one of its most common variants. This could mean a particularly tough flu season, especially since current vaccines are not compatible with rapidly spreading variants.

But there’s no need to panic. As the influenza season deepens and more data become available, early evidence is emerging that the vaccine still provides adequate protection against severe disease from subclade K.

The most common symptoms of influenza are:

  • heat.
  • cough.
  • sore throat.
  • My body hurts.
  • Runny or stuffy nose.
  • headache.
  • Fatigue.

What about the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19)?

According to CDC estimates, the number of people infected with the new coronavirus is also increasing.

As of Dec. 16, the CDC reported that 31 states had an increase or a potential increase in COVID-19 infections, one state had a decrease or a potential decrease, and 15 states had no change.

Common symptoms of the new coronavirus are:

  • Fever or chills.
  • cough.
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing.
  • sore throat.
  • Stuffy or runny nose.
  • New loss of taste or smell.
  • Fatigue.
  • Muscle and body pain.
  • headache.

How can we stay healthy?

It’s time for hugs and handshakes. So one thing is very important. That means washing your hands. According to the Cleveland Clinic, rubbing your hands well and often is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of disease.

Always rub your hands with warm, soapy water for at least 20 seconds, especially right before or after eating, after using the bathroom, or when preparing food.

If you need to cough or sneeze, reach for a tissue or use your elbow to prevent the spread of germs. If you think you may be infected, wear a face mask to protect others and yourself from further infection.

According to the CDC, strictly follow food safety guidance when it comes to the highly contagious norovirus. Carefully wash fruits and vegetables, and thoroughly cook meat, poultry, and seafood (usually to about 145 degrees Fahrenheit). Disinfecting also makes a big difference. After you’re done cooking for the holidays, take the time to scrub down your counters, sink, and other utensils with disinfectant and soap.

Let’s get vaccinated

Even though the season is winding down, vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent severe illness from influenza and COVID-19, according to the World Health Organization, CDC, and other leading medical organizations.

Anyone over 6 months old is eligible to receive the flu vaccine unless they have certain medical conditions, such as an allergy to the ingredients in the flu vaccine or a severe reaction to a previous shot.

Under Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the COVID-19 vaccination guidance has changed in response to new recommendations from the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration. The vaccine is recommended for everyone over six months of age based on individual decision-making in consultation with health care professionals, what the federal vaccine committee calls “common clinical decision-making.” The CDC says doctors, registered nurses and pharmacists can administer the vaccine to adults and school-age children after consulting with the patient.

Pharmacies are the most common place for American adults to purchase seasonal vaccines. The two largest chains, CVS and Walgreens, are offering vaccine appointments online and are also accepting walk-ins. Both offer the option of receiving multiple vaccines at once, and most insurance companies will fully cover the cost of vaccinations at these pharmacies.
