How much protein is too much? What you need to know to build muscle

0

play

If you want to build muscle, hitting the gym might be your first move. But how does protein intake factor into bulking plans?

The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for protein is 0.36 grams of protein per pound, or about 54 grams for a person weighing 150 pounds. However, diet experts are increasingly recommending increasing protein intake, at least 60 to 90 grams per day.

Although everyone’s needs are different, dietitian Jamie Nadeau previously told USA TODAY that people generally need “at least 20 grams of protein per meal to feel full.”

If you’re trying to build muscle, your intake can be even higher. However, it is possible to consume too much protein. Here’s how to find your happy medium, recommended by nutrition experts.

How much protein does it take to build muscle?

Nadeau said you should consume at least 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. This equates to a minimum of 54.4 grams of protein per day for a person weighing 150 pounds.

But if you’re trying to build muscle, adding more protein will help your body “growth, development, and tissue repair,” according to Harvard Health.

“Everyone is different, but for most healthy people looking to build muscle, aiming for 1.2 to 1.4 grams of protein per kilogram is effective,” says Nadeau. In other words, for a person weighing 150 pounds, aim for 81.6 to 95.2 grams.

Increasing your protein intake doesn’t have to involve the complicated ordeal of finding an acceptable protein powder or constantly cooking large amounts of meat. Many meats contain much more protein, but other foods also contain protein, such as lentils, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, milk, black beans, and peanut butter.

“To keep things simple, we recommend prioritizing a good source of protein at every meal and striving to include at least one snack a day that contains at least 5 to 10 grams of protein,” Nadeau said.

What symptoms occur when there is too much protein in the body?

Even when it comes to nutrition, there can be too much of a good thing.

According to Harvard Health, eating a very high protein diet increases your risk of developing kidney stones. Also, depending on what protein-rich foods you eat, eating large amounts of red meat and other foods high in saturated fat can increase your risk of heart disease and colon cancer.

“It’s certainly possible to consume too much protein,” Nadeau says. She recommends keeping protein intake to less than 2g per kg of protein.

George Clooney cheekily responds to President Trump celebrating France’s move

George Clooney responded to President Donald Trump’s support for his decision to leave the United States with his family and live in France..

“Ocean’s Eleven” actor Amal Clooney and his wife Amal Clooney recently became French citizens, along with their 8-year-old twins Alexander and Ella, according to government documents viewed by USA TODAY.

President Trump told Truth Social on Dec. 31: “Good news! George and Amal Clooney, the worst political prophets of all time, are now officially French citizens. France is sadly in the midst of a major crime problem due to its absolutely terrible handling of immigration, just as it was in the Sleepy Joe Biden era.” “Clooney has garnered more attention for his political conversation than for his few, completely mediocre films.”

President Trump added that Clooney was never a movie star, but rather “an ordinary guy who constantly complains about political norms. Let’s make America great again!”

“I completely agree with our current president. We have to make America great again, and we’re going to start in November,” Clooney said in a statement provided to USA TODAY and first shared by The Hollywood Reporter on January 1.

USA TODAY has reached out to the White House for comment.

The Oscar winner explained that he decided to move to France so that his children could grow up outside of Hollywood and live a normal life away from the public eye.

“We live on a farm in France,” he said in an Esquire profile in October. “I grew up on a farm for a good part of my life, so when I was a kid I hated the whole idea of a farm. But now, for them, it’s like not having an iPad. They have to have dinner with the adults and bring in the dishes. They have a much better life.”

She added, “I was worried about raising my kids in the culture of Los Angeles, Hollywood. I felt like my kids would never get a proper shake up in life. France is completely unconcerned about fame. I don’t want my kids to be walking around worrying about paparazzi. I don’t want them to be compared to somebody’s famous kids.”

George Clooney previously said he “doesn’t care” about President Trump’s comments

George Clooney is used to brushing off insults from presidents.

Appearing on CBS Morning on April 21, Clooney responded to Trump calling him a “second-rate movie star and failed political commentator” after a segment on 60 Minutes in which he talked about the importance of press freedom.

Clooney told CBS that he “doesn’t care” about President Trump’s comments about him. “I’ve known Donald Trump for a long time. My job is not to please the president of the United States. My job is to try to tell the truth whenever possible and every chance I get.”

He added, “I’m very aware of the idea that people won’t like it. There will be people who criticize it. Elon Musk has expressed his opinion from time to time. That’s their right to do that, and it’s my right to disagree.”

President Trump criticizes ’60 Minutes’ Clooney’s ‘puff joke’ on TrueSocial post from March 23rd. The president said Clooney “threw out” former President Joe Biden “like a dog” after he called on Democrats to replace him in the 2024 presidential election in a New York Times op-ed.

Teen charged with carjacking and killing Uber driver in suburban Atlanta

A 15-year-old Georgia boy is accused of ordering an Uber ride with the intention of carjacking the driver, causing his death on New Year’s Day.

According to a news release, at approximately 5 a.m. on Jan. 1, Lawrenceville Police were called to Groveland Parkway for a report of a person lying in the road.

The man suffered gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police identified the man as Cesar Tejada, 58, a husband and father of two who “worked as an Uber driver to support his family.”

Camera captures the fatal moment

A nearby Ring camera captured a black SUV parked on the street, and with help from FLOCK camera technology and Uber, police were able to uncover the night’s events.

Police said Tejada picked up the man on Rangewood Drive around 4:13 a.m. and drove him to Groveland Parkway.

When the car stopped, the passenger got out of the back of the car and shot Tejada, who was sitting in the driver’s seat, leaving him on the road.

The Uber passengers then got into the car and drove away.

Police then tracked the car to the same location where the passenger was picked up. As officers monitored the area, a person of interest exited the home and entered the roadway, where he was arrested.

15 year olds are billed as adults

The passenger and suspected gunman was identified as 15-year-old Christian Simmons. He is charged with murder and is being prosecuted as an adult, police said.

“We are heartbroken by this devastating loss and extend our condolences to the driver’s family during this incredibly difficult time. We have been in contact with the Lawrenceville Police Department and are assisting with their investigation,” an Uber representative said in a statement to the media.

Uber also said that the passenger’s account was banned, but that it could not confirm that the account belonged to Simmons.

Police called the violent carjacking “senseless” but praised the speed with which they identified and detained the passenger.

Labbus, 6-7 and more trends the internet wants to keep in 2025

play

Last year was full of memorable trends, memes, and phrases, some of which were built to last, while others are better forgotten.

On January 1st, the world left behind 2025 and its viral moment and ushered in 2026.

From obnoxious TikTok dances to excessive protein products, here are the trends that internet pundits believe will be dead by 2026.

6-7 Memes

Lake Superior State University’s new list of banned words includes 6-7, which appears in rapper Skrilla’s 2024 song “Doot Doot.” In the song, the artist raps, “How to switch that, I know he’s gonna die. 6-7.” The exact meaning of 6-7 is unknown. According to Know Your Meme, some have suggested that the song may be a reference to 67th Street in the rapper’s hometown of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

In 2025, the phrase has been adopted by teenagers and children alike to mean “so and so” or “maybe this, maybe that.” This phrase can also be used alone as a joke or to embarrass adults. The phrase became so popular that Dictionary.com named it the 2025 Word of the Year.

“There are six or seven reasons why we should drop this term,” said Wisconsin resident Paul E., who submitted the 6-7 vote for Lake Superior State University (LSSU), in a news release announcing the list.

LSSU’s annual list also included other words such as “modest” and “cooked.”

love bath

Once so popular that consumers feared their keychains would be stolen from their wallets and bags, the love bath has seen a significant decline in popularity since its peak in mid-2025.

According to CNBC, the resale price of Love Buses began to drop after PopMart increased production of Love Buses to meet demand. Doll imitations resembling mischievous elf monsters proliferated throughout the year, sparking a craze for the Love Bus imitation’s name, “Ruff.”

Citing Japanese financial holding company Nomura, CNBC reported that at one point, the secret blind box version was sold for more than 2,000 percent of retail price, and the product was often sold out at retail stores.

On New Year’s Eve, an

dubai chocolate

What exactly is Dubai Chocolate? And what makes it different from good old milk chocolate?

UAE-based brand FIX Chocolatier launched its original Dubai chocolate bar in 2022, according to founder Sarah Hammouda. After its launch, the bar was a huge success and quickly became popular in the United States in 2025. The candy was so popular that other companies created fakes and flavor imitations that were sold at major retailers.

Chocolate bars are filled with pistachios and often have tahini mixed with kadaif, a filo-like pastry. FIX Chocolatier said its bars “blend world-famous Middle Eastern desserts with premium Belgian chocolate and are handcrafted in Dubai.”

While delicious and popular with many, some are less impressed by the trendy dessert, which has expanded beyond chocolate to spice up flavors in coffee, shakes, and baked goods. One X user wrote: “We’re not bringing in Dubai Chocolate in 2026. Please, thank you.”

excess protein products

Wellness experts are concerned about the amount of protein in everyday products. We have protein ice cream, protein peanut butter, and protein chips. Some social media users have even called these products “gimmicks.”

Stilia Everett, a clinical assistant professor at Stony Brook School of Medicine, told the New York Post that protein products should not serve as meal replacements. Additionally, eating too much protein can damage your arteries and cause heart problems.

The Food and Drug Administration recommends consuming 50 grams of protein daily.

Concerns about eating too much protein are controversial, as Michael Ormsby, director of the Florida State University Institute of Sports Science and Medicine, says, “High-protein diets have several evidence-based benefits, especially for those interested in improving body composition, strength, and metabolic health.”

“Unlike many fad diets that restrict certain food groups or rely on unsustainable habits, consuming more protein supports muscle retention during weight loss, increases satiety, and helps maintain resting energy expenditure,” he added.

High-protein diets are “growing in popularity because they’re effective,” Ormsby said.

“People are experiencing tangible benefits such as increased satiety, improved body composition, and improved performance. There is also a shift in public understanding, thanks to better education, strong scientific communication, and professional organizations that have helped dispel myths,” he said. “High-protein diets are appealing across goals such as reducing fat, building muscle, and accelerating aging, and are relatively easy to implement without eliminating entire food groups. In short, you get results, and the science backs it up.”

Zoran Mamdani revokes New York City order against Israel and anti-Semitism on first day

0

New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani revoked all executive orders he signed, including two regarding Israel, after former Mayor Eric Adams was indicted on corruption charges.

play

WASHINGTON – In one of his opening acts, New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani quickly revoked all executive orders his predecessor, Eric Adams, signed after he was indicted on federal corruption charges, including two regarding Israel.

On his first day in office, Jan. 1, Mamdani rescinded an order signed by former Mayor Adams that prohibited city officials from boycotting or divesting companies from Israel. Mamdani also rescinded the Adams order, which adopted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of anti-Semitism.

This sweeping executive action rescinds all orders Adams signed after he was indicted on federal corruption charges in September 2024.

But Mr. Mamdani retained the newly created office set up by Mr. Adams in May to combat anti-Semitism.

One of Adams’ executive orders adopted a definition of anti-Semitism that included opposition to the existence of the state of Israel.

Another prohibited heads of government agencies from boycotting or selling Israeli bonds or other assets or from discriminating against the state, its people, or associated individuals or businesses. The order, in response to the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, was signed in the final weeks of Adams’ term.

The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement (BDS) aims to put economic pressure on Israel, alleging violations of international law and human rights violations against Palestinians. Since 2005, the BDS movement has called on banks, local governments, pension funds, religious organizations and universities to divest from Israel, according to the BDS website.

Mamdani, a democratic socialist who won the Democratic nomination for mayor and became the first Muslim mayor of the country’s most populous city this week, is a strong advocate of Palestinian rights. He has previously expressed support for the BDS movement and promised to review all of Adams’ executive orders.

Mamdani’s actions sparked a backlash from some conservatives and Israeli officials concerned about the mayor’s criticism of Israel.

New York City Councilor Inna Vernikov said in a social media post that the definition of anti-Semitism rescinded by Mamdani is recognized in 40 countries, including the European Union, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and Germany. “It’s good enough for Germany, but not good enough for Mamdani,” said Vernikov, a Republican.

Mr. Vernikov also criticized Mr. Mamdani for rescinding the Adams order restricting protests in houses of worship. “Prohamas anti-Semites, emboldened by (Mamdani), are coming,” Vernikov said in the post.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry reprimanded Mamdani, and the National Jewish Defense Center also criticized his actions.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a social media post that the revocation of the IHRA’s definition of anti-Semitism and the lifting of restrictions on the boycott of Israel are “gasoline for anti-Semitism”.

The Anti-Defamation League has also targeted Mamdani in recent weeks over the appointee’s social media posts. A former aide accused of making anti-Semitic comments has resigned.

At a press conference last month, responding to one of the ADL’s reports, Mamdani said that “we have to distinguish between anti-Semitism and criticism of the Israeli government,” and that ignoring that distinction “diverts attention from the very real crisis of anti-Semitism that we see not only in our city but across the country.”

The mayor’s office has not publicly commented on the criticism surrounding the revocation of the executive order. A senior adviser to the city of Mamdani, who was not authorized to speak publicly on the issue, dismissed criticism by the Israeli government as unimportant and told USA TODAY that the mayor was adamant that fighting anti-Semitism is important.

Civil liberties groups supported Mamdani’s decision to rescind Adams’ Israel-related orders.

Donna Lieberman, executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union, said Adams’ order provided an “incomplete and overly broad definition of anti-Semitism” and prevented city officials from boycotting Israel.

“Both orders appear to be aimed at suppressing speech with which Mayor Adams disagrees, which is protected by the First Amendment,” Lieberman said.

Haley Soifer, executive director of the Jewish Democratic Council of America, told USA TODAY in a statement that Mamdani’s decision to retain NYPD Chief Jessica Tisch and continue her work to combat anti-Semitism is a welcome move.

“Mayor Mamdani has repeatedly promised, including directly to us, to protect Jewish New Yorkers from rising anti-Semitism, and he must deliver on that promise,” she said. “Following the sweeping revocation of all previous executive orders, including at least two related to Israel and anti-Semitism, meaningful action must be taken to protect Jewish New Yorkers from the dangerous scourge of anti-Semitism in the days, months, and years ahead.”

During his campaign, Mamdani remained critical of Israel and its treatment of Palestinians amid the Gaza war. He accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza and said he would respect the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant issued to Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu on war crimes charges in Gaza..

During a meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu at the White House in July, Trump suggested that Mamdani could limit funding to New York if he complied. “He’s going to behave well. If he doesn’t behave better, there’s going to be a big problem,” Trump said.

Some of Mamdani’s comments have been particularly controversial in New York City, which has the largest Jewish population outside of Israel. Some of his choices for the new government have raised concerns.

On December 18, the person appointed to head Mamdani’s incoming government resigned over the resurfacing of anti-Semitic social media posts. Catherine Almonte da Costa resigned just one day after she was announced as the Mamdani government’s director of appointments, which oversees the hiring of city executives.

Tyson and Cargill reach $87.5 million settlement. Check who is eligible for payment

If you purchased beef between 2014 and 2019, you may be eligible for a partial cash settlement.

Multiple meat producers are accused in an antitrust class action lawsuit of entering into noncompete agreements to increase beef prices. As a result, customers affected by these alleged actions may be eligible for compensation.

The lawsuit alleges that multiple food companies agreed to stop competing with each other for market share and were allowed to increase the price customers pay for beef between August 1, 2014 and December 31, 2019, according to a website dedicated to the lawsuit.

Named in the federal lawsuit are JBS USA Food Company, Swift Beef Company, JBS Packerland, Cargill, Cargill Meat Solutions Corporation, National Beef Packing Company, Tyson Foods and Tyson Fresh Meats.

Tyson Foods and Tyson Fresh Meats agreed to a total settlement of $55 million, and Cargill agreed to a $32.5 million settlement, the website said.

USA TODAY reached out to Tyson Foods and Cargill, which owns Tyson Fresh Meat, on Friday, January 2, but did not receive a response.

A judge is scheduled to hold a fairness hearing in the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota on May 12, 2026 at 11 a.m. Central Time to determine whether these settlements will be approved.

Those receiving a cash settlement must wait until the payment is approved and the appeal is concluded, a process that “may take time,” plaintiffs’ lawyers wrote on the lawsuit’s website.

In October 2025, Tyson Foods separately agreed to pay $85 million to settle a consumer class action lawsuit accusing the meat maker of colluding with rivals to jack up the price of pork, Reuters reported.

Here’s what beef buyers need to know if they want to get a piece of the $87.5 million total cash settlement.

What products are included? And who is participating in the lawsuit?

The lawsuit includes beef (fresh or frozen) made from shoulder loin, loin, ribs, or round prim cuts, according to the lawsuit’s website.

Some beef products are not included, such as:

  • Premium: USDA Prime, Organic, 100% Grass-Fed Wagyu, “American Style Kobe Beef.”
  • Specialties: No Antibiotics Ever (“NAE”), Antibiotic Free, Kosher, Halal, Certified Humane.
  • Processed Beef: Ground, marinated, seasoned, flavored, breaded, or cooked beef.

The class and its attorneys have created a searchable database for the parts of beef included in the lawsuit.

Consumers are subject to lawsuits if they purchased these products indirectly (i.e., from a grocery store) between August 2014 and December 2019.

What are the consumer’s options? What are the deadlines?

Plaintiffs and their attorneys say their clients have multiple options for litigation.

According to the website, options for consumers include:

  • I would like to receive payment in cash. Customers taking this route must submit their claim form by the following deadlines: June 30, 2026. They will be paid in cash and will not be able to sue Cargill and Tyson over the claims in the lawsuit.
  • I would like to opt out or be excluded from the lawsuit. You may submit a written opt-out request by: March 30, 2026. They cannot receive cash payments, but they can sue Cargill and Tyson on their own.
  • I want to oppose reconciliation. Consumers can submit written appeals in the following ways: March 30, 2026. Consumers who object are still bound by the settlement, but their objection allows them to tell the court why they believe the payment is unfair.
  • I don’t want to do anything. Consumers who take this route do not receive cash payments, are legally bound to the settlement, and waive their right to later sue Cargill and Tyson.

Customers seeking more information regarding this lawsuit may visit www.overchargedforbeef.com, call 1-877-283-8711, or write to: Consumer Indirect Beef Litigation c/o Settlement Administrator, PO Box 3605, Portland, Oregon, 97208-3605.

I would like to file a complaint. What should I do?

Consumers can download and mail a claim form from the litigation website or submit a form online.

If you wish to submit the form by mail, please ensure that your document is postmarked by June 30, 2026 and send it to Consumer Indirect Beef Litigation Settlement Administrator, PO Box 3605, Portland, Oregon 97208-3605.

I would like to speak at the public hearing in May. Who should I contact?

Consumers and lawyers behind the lawsuit say those interested in speaking at the May 12 fairness hearing can request to do so by mailing a letter postmarked by March 30.

The letter must include:

  • Speaker’s name, current address, phone number, and signature.
  • Identifies this letter as “Notice of Intent to Appear in Cattle and Beef Antitrust Litigation, Number 0:22-md-03031.”

Consumers should send their letters to: Consumer Indirect Beef Litigation c/o Settlement Administrator PO Box 3605 Portland, Oregon, 97208-3605 or United States District Court for the District of Minnesota, 300 South Fourth Street, Suite 202, Minneapolis, Minnesota, 55415.

On January 6, a judge sentenced pipe bomb suspect Brian Cole to continue his prison sentence.

play

A man accused of planting a pipe bomb at a political headquarters by Jan. 6, 2021, must remain jailed until trial, a federal judge ruled on Jan. 2, citing evidence that the suspect continued to collect bomb-making materials.

Brian Cole was arrested in early December after a nearly five-year investigation on charges of using an explosive device to harm or threaten another person and destroying property. The two bombs are believed to have been planted on the night of January 5, 2021, near the headquarters of the Democratic and Republican National Committees near the U.S. Capitol.

Law enforcement discovered the device on January 6, the same day President Donald Trump’s supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol to disrupt the certification of then-President-elect Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential election victory.

Cole’s lawyers proposed that he be released ahead of trial under strict conditions, including that he remain at home and be monitored by GPS. The defense emphasized that he had no criminal history, had a family support network, and that the alleged crimes occurred several years ago.

But U.S. Magistrate Judge Matthew Sharbaugh wrote in a Jan. 2 opinion that Cole’s alleged crimes present a “staggering and grave danger.” In addition, after the incident, Kohl allegedly continued to purchase bomb-making materials, including metal pipes, wire and timers, until August 2022, Sharbaugh said. Cole allegedly kept the parts in his car and in a closet at his home.

“While this continued alleged activity is at least consistent with continued ‘bomb-making’ activity, as the government has described it, it tempers the idea that the five-year period from the underlying criminal activity to today reduces future risk,” Charbaugh wrote.

Law enforcement said Cole initially denied any involvement in planting the bomb after his arrest. He reportedly said he drove to Washington, D.C., on January 5 to participate in a protest in support of Trump’s false claim that he won the 2020 presidential election.

However, several hours later, Cole allegedly admitted to being the suspect seen in the surveillance footage and described how he assembled, transported, and placed the explosives.

Rama Dowaj’s inaugural coat was created by a Middle Eastern designer

Rama Dowaj’s styling choices have already established her as New York City’s first lady.

The Syrian-American illustrator and animator, and wife of newly sworn-in New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani, wore a custom brown faux fur and wool coat from Renaissance Renaissance, a brand by Palestinian-Lebanese designer Cynthia Melhaj. The brand says the coat, which features a three-tiered fringe detail, is based on a design from its Fall/Winter 2023 collection and is entirely sourced and manufactured in Beirut, Lebanon. She paired the coat with brown lace-up boots.

Stylist Gabriela Karefa-Johnson worked with Dowaj on the low-key inaugural look for Mandani’s private inauguration ceremony, which took place just after midnight on New Year’s Day at a former subway station below City Hall. Karefa-Johnson wrote on her Substack that the piece was a collaboration with designer Melheige’s female family, and the artist called it “a testament to the superhuman strength of women and our community.”

“On her first official day as First Lady of New York, Ms. Rama is wearing clothes by a petite, independent female designer from the Middle East,” Karefa-Johnson added. “That expression resonates. It resonates because fashion communicates. Fashion sends a message.”

USA TODAY has reached out to Mamdani’s team for comment.

Douwaj’s midnight inauguration outfit was a combination of a cozy, minimalist vintage Balenciaga coat and archival gold sculptural statement earrings from New York Vintage, both of which she rented, according to her stylist. Karefa Johnson said she wore knee-length formal shorts from New York clothing store Frankie Shop with black ankle boots borrowed from London-based Mista.

Dowaj, 28, favors an understated, modern look with a creative-class sensibility, and has continued to subvert expectations with her sartorial choices as the next first lady. “I love fashion, I love being creative, I love putting things together, I love styling,” Dhwaj said in an article published on December 23, before boasting about hidden savings she found around the city.

Online, she has been seen in similarly modernist looks, and when Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist, gave his victory speech in November, Douwaj stood by his side wearing a dark denim square-neck top by Palestinian-Jordanian designer Zaid Hijazi and a black skirt by Ulla Johnson, as well as statement dangling earrings by fellow New York jewelry designer Eddie Borgo.

she told The Cut. “It’s nice to be able to analyze the clothing a little bit… It’s nice to be able to send a message about Palestinians by wearing a Palestinian designer on election night.”

Rendered beef tallow is a favorite of Secretary of Humanity and Health Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has publicly urged restaurants to use it instead of seed oil, which he called “one of the most unhealthy ingredients in food.”

Steak ‘n Shake announced the switch in March 2025, saying in a social media post, “Steak ‘n Shake is proud to support MAHA and Secretary Kennedy! Your lives are numbered. We want to be at the forefront and make a difference! #MAHA.” RFK thanked the restaurant for its “leadership in the movement to make America healthy again.”

In a notice on its website, Steak ‘n Shake said it is “committed to removing seed oil” from its restaurants and is working with suppliers to meet its goals.

“At our restaurants, our French fries, onion rings, and chicken tenders are prepared with 100% beef tallow. Beef tallow contains no additives, preservatives, or chemicals,” the notice reads. “We also worked with our french fry manufacturers to completely eliminate, at considerable cost, the vegetable oils that were used to parfry the product before freezing and shipping it to us. As a result of these efforts, our tallow fries are now completely free of seed oil.”

The company also said it now uses 100% Grade A Wisconsin butter in some burgers and sandwiches instead of “previous butter blends that included seed oil.” Steak ‘n Shake now also offers Cane Sugar Coke in its restaurants.

Other chains that have chosen to use beef tallow for frying include Smashburger, Popeyes, Buffalo Wild Wings, and Outback Steakhouse.

Why have restaurants largely stopped using beef tallow?

Several restaurants, including McDonald’s, stopped using beef tallow in the late 1980s and early 1990s, The Week reported, following guidance from health advocacy groups who said cooking with the substitute could help prevent heart disease.

Christopher Gardner, a nutritionist at Stanford University School of Medicine, told NPR that saturated fats like tallow and butter can clog arteries and cause high cholesterol, a risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Although seed oils are an ingredient in many highly processed foods, they are not the only reason these foods are unhealthy, he added.

“If people started eating more hamburgers and fries, even though they were consuming tallow instead of seed oil, more people would die,” Gardner said.

A woman’s body was found in the hallway of a San Francisco hotel early on New Year’s Day and has been identified as Victoria Jones, daughter of award-winning actor Tommy Lee Jones. She was 34 years old.

The San Francisco Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed the woman’s identity to USA TODAY on Friday, January 2.

Victoria Jones’ cause of death has not been determined, the San Francisco Fire Department told The Hollywood Reporter. The department confirmed in a Jan. 2 email to USA TODAY that its employees responded to a medical emergency at the Fairmont Hotel just before 3 a.m. on Jan. 1. Upon arrival, paramedics conducted an examination and pronounced him dead, SFFD reported.

Both the San Francisco Police Department and the Medical Examiner’s Office were then called to the scene. USA TODAY has reached out to Lee Jones’ representative.

Victoria Jones followed in her father’s footsteps and appeared in several films as a child and young adult, including 2005’s The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, which he directed. She left acting later in life.

Lee Jones, 79, is a prominent actor known for his roles in films such as The Fugitive, JFK, the Men in Black trilogy, and The Valley of Elah. Victoria is one of his two children with ex-wife Kimberly Crawley. The couple, who were married from 1981 to 1996, also have a son, Austin Jones, 43.

Lee Jones married his current wife Dawn Laurel in 2001.

President Trump makes a surprise pit stop to buy marble for White House ballroom

Two days into 2026, President Trump and his motorcade made a surprise pit stop to find the perfect marble for the White House ballroom.

play

WASHINGTON – Two days into 2026, President Donald Trump and his motorcade made a surprise pit stop to find the perfect marble for the White House ballroom.

President Trump, who is vacationing at the Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, stopped by Ark Stone & Tile in Lake Worth, Florida, on January 2, where he purchased marble and onyx for the ballroom “at his own expense,” White House officials said.

Reporters were not allowed to be present when the president shopped inside the store. After Trump’s speech, the motorcade continued to the Trump International Golf Club, where the president played golf.

This isn’t the first time Trump has shopped at Ark Stone & Tile, a wholesale stone company located about nine miles from Mar-a-Lago. Arc Stone & Tile supplied Italian marble for Mar-a-Lago’s ballroom in 2004, according to the company’s website.

Initial site excavation and other construction work is underway for President Trump’s 90,000-square-foot White House Ballroom, which historic preservationists are challenging in court. The east wing of the White House was quickly demolished in October to make way for an addition.

President Trump hopes to have the banquet hall completed by the end of his term in January 2029. The White House plans to submit design plans for the banquet hall to the National Capital Planning Commission at its Jan. 8 committee meeting.

President Trump has vowed to pay for the banquet hall with private donations and his own funds. President Trump said on December 29 that the project, which is expected to cost $400 million, far more than the $250 million originally expected, was “under budget and ahead of schedule.”

President Trump said the price increase was “greater than anything I talked about since I found out we were going to have the inauguration in that building.”

President Trump said the ballroom, which can seat 999 people, is needed to host large White House events that currently take place outdoors or in the much smaller East Room.

President Trump hired a new lead architect, Shalom Baranes of Washington, D.C., in December after clashing with the project’s original architect over the scale of the massive addition. The original principal architect, James McCrery II, remained as a consultant.

An October poll conducted by The Washington Post, ABC News, and Ipsos found that 56% of Americans oppose the demolition of the East Tower and the ballroom project, including 45% who said they “strongly oppose.”

President Trump explains bruises and bleeding on his hands in WSJ interview

0

play

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump addressed mysterious bruises on his hands in a new interview, denying health concerns and saying the noticeable discoloration was due to taking too much aspirin.

Trump, the oldest president ever to hold office, also gave a candid interview with The Wall Street Journal about his health, denying he fell asleep during meetings, explaining why he doesn’t exercise, and saying he had a CT scan instead of an MRI as he had previously claimed.

“My health is perfect,” he told the newspaper.

Here are five takeaways from what the paper described as an “impromptu phone interview” that took place after the paper shared details of its reporting on President Trump’s health with the White House.

President Trump explains bruises on his hands and makeup

President Trump said he bruises easily because he takes large amounts of aspirin every day, and that he wears makeup to cover up the discoloration.

The president told the Journal that he takes 325 milligrams of aspirin a day for “cardiac prophylaxis,” more than his doctor’s recommendation. According to the Mayo Clinic, the most common low-dose aspirin is 81 milligrams.

“They say aspirin is good for thinning the blood, but I don’t want thick blood rushing into my heart,” Trump said. “I want thin, good blood flowing through my heart. Does that make sense?”

President Trump said he has been taking large doses of aspirin for 25 years and ignores his doctor’s advice to cut back because “I’m a little superstitious.”

The White House announced in July that Trump had been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, causing visible swelling in his lower legs near his ankles. This condition is common in people in their 70s and occurs when the veins in the legs have problems pumping blood back to the heart.

President Trump said he briefly wore compression socks to reduce swelling, but stopped wearing them because he didn’t like the socks.

Bleeding from delicate skin

Trump’s skin has become so sensitive that his hands began to bleed when Attorney General Pam Bondi cut him with a ring during a high-five with the president at the 2024 RNC convention in Milwaukee, the paper said.

President Trump acknowledged the incident in an interview, saying, “The ring hit the back of my hand, and yes, there was a little bit of a cut.”

The Journal reported that Bondi’s incident alarmed witnesses and was one of several instances in which his hand was severed.

In his first year as president, Trump has been seen multiple times with a bandage on the back of his right hand.

Deny falling asleep during a meeting

President Trump denied falling asleep, even though he closed his eyes during a recent White House event. Instead, he said, he closes his eyes to relax.

“Let’s call it a day. I’m very relaxed,” Trump said in an interview. “Sometimes they take pictures of me blinking and they capture me blinking.”

Trump often gets little sleep at night and is known for texting aides and posting on social media early in the morning. President Trump appeared to nod his head during a Dec. 2 Cabinet meeting with his secretaries and an announcement about weight loss pills in the Oval Office on Nov. 6.

Following the incident, White House staff encouraged him to keep his eyes open during public events, the paper said.

President Trump has long mocked former President Joe Biden for his age and physical strength, calling his 83-year-old predecessor “Sleepy Joe” while defending his own physical strength.

In a Jan. 2 post on Truth Social, President Trump wrote, “White House doctors have just reported that I am in ‘perfect health’ and have given a ‘pass’ (i.e. answered 100% of the questions asked correctly!) on three consecutive cognitive tests that no other president or former vice president wanted to take.”

I don’t like exercising

President Trump said he doesn’t do any exercise other than playing golf regularly because he’s “bored.”

“I just don’t like it. It’s boring,” President Trump told the newspaper. “Walking or running on a treadmill for hours on end like some people is not for me.”

Trump’s doctor, Sean Barbavera, said Trump, who is known for eating fatty foods such as hamburgers and fries, takes rosuvastatin and ezetimibe to control his cholesterol and uses mometasone cream to treat a skin condition.

President Trump credited his energy to his parents, who stayed active even into old age. “Genetics is very important,” he said. “And I have very good genes.”

President Trump says he underwent CT scan instead of MRI

President Trump has said for months that he underwent an MRI during a visit to Walter Reed Medical Center in October.

However, he corrected himself in an interview with the Journal, saying he had actually undergone a CT scan.

“It wasn’t an MRI,” Trump told the Journal. “It was less than that. It was a scan.”

Barbabella confirmed in a statement that Trump underwent a CT scan “to completely rule out any cardiovascular issues.” No abnormalities were found as a result of the scan. Barbabella said Trump’s doctors initially told him they would do either an MRI or CT scan, and he ultimately chose the latter.

SBA freezes nearly 7,000 loans in Minnesota fraud scandal

The Trump administration suspended small business loans to about 7,000 Minnesota borrowers due to suspected fraud.

play

The Trump administration has foreclosed on about 7,000 small business loans in Minnesota, the latest federal action in response to a fraud scandal that has engulfed the entire state.

Small Business Administration Administrator Kelly Loeffler said thousands of COVID-19 loans totaling $400 million were approved for alleged “fraudulent” borrowers. The federal loan stems from a program specifically aimed at supporting small businesses during the coronavirus pandemic.

“These individuals will now be banned from all SBA loan programs, including disaster loans,” Loeffler said in a statement regarding X. “We will also refer all cases to federal law enforcement for prosecution and repayment, as appropriate.”

Loeffler did not provide additional details about the borrowers or businesses whose loans are frozen. She added that these efforts would extend beyond Minnesota, writing, “This is just the first state.”

It was the latest step taken by the Trump administration to combat fraud that is said to be rampant in the state.

As part of the same enforcement activity, the DepartmentbeDue to an action taken by the Department of Health and Human Services, child care payments to the state of Minnesota have been frozen. Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI recently announced they would step up investigations focused on alleged fraud involving taxpayer dollars in Democratic-led states.

The Biden administration has long investigated fraud in the state, including theft from the Medicaid program, leading to dozens of arrests and convictions. These efforts continued during President Trump’s second term.

In what prosecutors described as the nation’s largest coronavirus-era fraud scheme, dozens of Minnesota fraudsters defrauded more than $250 million from a federal funding program aimed at feeding hungry children through the nonprofit organization Feeding Our Future.

Federal prosecutors have charged more than 80 people with involvement in the scheme since 2022, most of them Somali-Americans. At least 60 suspects were convicted.

President Donald Trump has seized on the scandal in recent weeks to criticize his opponent, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, as his 2024 Democratic vice presidential candidate. The president also criticized the state’s Somali community, calling local officials racist and un-American and at one point deriding them as “trash.”

White House press secretary Caroline Levitt said in late December that the administration was considering denaturalizing a Somali-American resident of Minnesota responsible for the fraud, a move aimed at stripping U.S. citizenship from people who illegally earned welfare tax dollars.

Mr. Walz, who is up for re-election this year, has gained increased attention and has taken several steps to combat fraud, including directing state agencies to step up efforts to identify and eradicate fraud.

In December, Walz announced a statewide fraud prevention program and appointed a former FBI agent to lead it. The former vice presidential candidate was called by congressional Republicans to testify about the corruption scandal before the House Oversight Committee in February.

China’s BYD overtakes Tesla to become the largest electric car seller

0

play

Chinese car giant BYD will overtake Tesla as the world’s top electric vehicle seller in 2025, according to new data released by the two companies.

Chinese automakers have come a long way since 2011, when Tesla CEO Elon Musk said in a Bloomberg TV interview that “I don’t think they have a great product,” dismissed BYD as a competitor and added that the company should focus on “not going out of business in China.” More than a decade later, in 2025, BYD outperformed Tesla even though EVs are not available for retail purchase in the US and China remains a key market for Tesla.

Global EV sales rose about 28% last year, with BYD reporting it sold about 2.26 million EVs, driven in part by growth in Europe, which widened the gap with Tesla. Meanwhile, the American automaker’s final quarterly earnings report showed annual sales declined for the second consecutive year. Tesla’s vehicle deliveries decreased from 1.79 million in 2024 to 1.64 million.

Increasing competition, the expiration of a $7,500 federal tax credit for EV buyers, and consumer backlash as Mr. Musk became the face of the Department of Efficiency have made 2025 a challenging year for Tesla.

Still, Tesla stock rose about 11.4% in 2025, increasing Musk’s wealth. After Tesla released its final quarterly earnings report on January 2, Tesla shares were down 1.2% by afternoon, while BYD shares were up about 5%.

A fire in a bar in Switzerland was likely caused by a sparkler, officials said. Latest updates.

Authorities believe a sparkler placed over a champagne bottle was the cause of a bar explosion that killed around 40 people and injured more than 100 at a New Year’s Eve party in Crans-Montana, Switzerland.

Around 1:30 a.m. local time on January 1, a fire broke out at a bar called Le Constellation in the Valais region of southwestern Switzerland, killing about 40 people and injuring about 115 others, Valais cantonal police announced.

Officials said it could take days or weeks to identify the victims.

“Last night in Crans-Montana, a moment of joy turned into tragedy. It was felt across the country and abroad,” Swiss President Guy Parmelin said in a statement about X.

Valais cantonal police said in a press release that the victims came from different countries and identification could take days or weeks.

The U.S. Embassy in Bern, Switzerland, said in a statement that it was “in close contact” with Swiss authorities and urged Americans in the country to inform their families and friends of their safety.

Crans-Montana is a popular resort destination for international tourists, skiers and golfers. It is scheduled to become a stopover for the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup Tour at the end of January.

Officials say a sparkler from a champagne bottle appears to have been the cause.

Béatrice Pilou, Attorney General of Valais, said at a press conference on January 2 that authorities believe the fire was caused by a glowing candle on top of a champagne bottle.

“Everything points to the fact that the fire started from a candle or ‘Bengal Light’ that was attached to a champagne bottle, which was too close to the ceiling, and from there it quickly became a very rapid and widespread fire,” Piroud said, according to Reuters.

Piroud said authorities are still investigating the incident.

Witness video shows how a fire broke out at a bar in a Swiss ski resort during New Year’s celebrations, killing dozens and injuring more than 100.

Video footage reviewed by Reuters showed a chaotic scene immediately after the fire broke out, with people rushing to escape from the building.

Italian teenage golfer identified as one of the victims

The official death toll has not yet been confirmed as investigators are still working to identify all the victims. Officials said the injured were being treated in hospitals across the country, including in Geneva and Zurich.

According to Reuters, Valais cantonal government secretary Matthias Reynard said experts were using teeth and DNA samples to identify the victims, but confirmation would take time due to the severity of the injuries.

“We have to do all this work because this information is so scary and sensitive that we can’t tell the family anything unless we’re 100% sure,” Reynard said.

According to Reuters, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said 13 Italians were hospitalized and six were still missing. The French embassy in Switzerland said in a statement that nine French nationals were confirmed among the injured, but more were likely.

Authorities believe many of the victims were young adults and teenagers.

Among them was Emanuele Galeppini, a 16-year-old Italian golfer who lived in Dubai and was identified as one of the victims who died in the fire, multiple media outlets, including Reuters, reported.

The Italian Golf Federation confirmed Gareppini’s death in a statement, saying he was a “young athlete who lived with passion and true values.”

President Trump says US will intervene if Iran kills protesters

0

play

WASHINGTON – As protests in Iran sparked by the country’s economic downturn enter their sixth day, President Donald Trump has vowed the United States will intervene if Iran kills peaceful protesters.

“If Iran shoots and violently kills peaceful protesters, as is their practice, the United States will come to their aid. We are locked in, loaded up and ready to go,” President Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform early on January 2nd.

The protests come as Iran’s inflation soars following years of sanctions from the United States and other countries that have crippled Iran’s economy. The demonstrations left several people dead and posed the biggest domestic threat to Iranian authorities in years.

Earlier this week, President Trump threatened to “drive the hell out” of Iran if it tries to rebuild its arms supply after Israel and the United States attacked Iran’s nuclear and missile programs in June. President Trump made the comments during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.

Reacting to President Trump’s recent remarks, Iranian official Ali Larijani warned that US intervention in Iran’s domestic affairs is tantamount to destabilizing the entire region. Iran supports groups in Lebanon, Iraq, and Yemen.

Trump’s comments came as state media quoted local officials in western Iran, where several deaths have been reported, as warning that violence and illegal gatherings would be dealt with “firmly and without mercy” and that the situation was likely to escalate.

State media and human rights groups have reported at least six deaths since Wednesday, including one man who authorities said was a member of the Basij paramilitary group affiliated with the Revolutionary Guards.

This week’s protests were the largest in three years since nationwide demonstrations sparked by the death of a young woman in detention in late 2022 paralyzed Iran for weeks, with human rights groups reporting hundreds of deaths.
