ST. LOUIS — Amber Glenn won the women’s title at the 2026 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, holding off reigning world champions Alisa Liu and Isabeau Levitt for her third consecutive national title.

Glenn, who posted a record-breaking score in the short program, performed an incredible free skate on Saturday, snapping a moment of child-on-ice pose as the audience rained down on the ice and applause erupted from the stands.

This performance earned her 150.50 points from the judges, for a total of 233.55 points. With this, Glenn, Ryu, and Levit are almost guaranteed to be included in the Olympic team. Milan-Cortina will be Glenn’s Olympic debut.

“I’m so grateful,” Glenn said afterward. “That was scary and I had to skate after these two amazing women brought the house down, so I’m glad I didn’t let it down too much. I’m still just amazed.”

Glenn, Ryu, and Levit have a strong bond and hugged each other tightly after Glenn’s final score was announced.

“Well, I’m really happy to be able to share the podium with them and get to spend more time with them,” Liu said. “Also, listen, I’m really happy and very proud of them. Listen, this crowd was amazing…I saw everyone’s standing ovation, and that’s what it should be about.”

In pairs, Alisa Efimova and Misha Mitrofanov won their second consecutive national title with 207.71 points. But the question remains whether the couple will qualify for the Olympics, and it will be interesting to see how things play out as Team USA’s announcement approaches. Ellie Kamm and Danny O’Shea took second place. Katie McBeth and Danielle Parkman took third place.

On Saturday, Ilya Marin will aim for her fourth straight national title, and ice dancing pair Madison Chock and Evan Bates will aim for their seventh overall. U.S. Figure Skating will announce its 2026 Olympic team on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Amber Glenn won her third consecutive U.S. National Championships with a time of 150.50 points in Friday’s short program.

In the free skate at Nationals, the reigning world champion used a modified Lady Gaga medley, reviving a program figure skating fans have been waiting for.

“I’m excited because it’s a completely new free skate,” Alisa Liu said earlier this week.

She finished second behind Amber Glenn with a score of 148.73.

The song has been in the works for several months for Liu, and was last performed at the 2025 CS Lombardy Trophy in September. It wasn’t the best performance, so she and choreographer Massimo Scali decided it was “not quite right yet” and needed to be reworked. In the meantime, she returned to free skating at the MacArthur Park Suite.

Since then, people have been wondering when Lady Gaga’s free skate will return. At Skate America in November, Liu said the team was still tinkering with the music and choreography, working on it “behind the scenes and during training.”

There have been some changes, especially the song selection. “Bloody Mary” is no longer in the mix, with Liu instead using the songs “Chromatica” and “Paparazzi,” with “Bad Romance” remaining as the closer.

USA TODAY Sports’ Jordan Mendoza spoke to Amber Glenn and Alisa Liu about the strong friendship they’ve built. Here’s what they said:

Liu says of Glenn: “She’s a really big sister to me. The idea of us competing against each other is so weird to me. I really look at her as one of my friends and really one of my teammates. I don’t know, but it’s really fun to do things with her.”

Glenn said of Ryu: “It’s great to have people around me who are so positive about skating and about their career. And on the flip side, I have a spare pair of tights in case she tears them up and I don’t have a spare. Or she doesn’t have tights and I’ll have a schedule ready.”

Where will the 2026 U.S. Figure Skating Championships be held?

  • date: January 7th to 11th
  • position: Enterprise Center, St. Louis, Missouri

The 2026 U.S. Figure Skating Championships will be held from January 7th to 11th at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri.

Team names will be decided on Sunday, January 11th at 2:00 p.m. Three men’s singles skaters and three women’s singles skaters will be selected, as well as three ice dance team members and two pairs, for a total of 16 skaters. The USFS selection process includes past performance, focusing on an athlete’s body of work over the past two seasons.

Types of jumps in figure skating

  • Toe jump: The skater drives the toe pick of his free foot into the ice, launching himself into the air and creating momentum for the jump.
    • Then run: The skater takes off backwards and lands on the same back end of the blade.
    • Lutz: The skater moving backwards jumps off the back outside edge of the skate, uses the toe pick of the other skate to launch into the air in the opposite direction, and lands on the back outside edge of the picking leg.
    • Flip: The skater launches from the inside back edge of one skate and lands on the outside back edge of the other skate.
  • Edge jump: The skater steps off from the edge of the skate, not the toe pick.
    • Salchow: The skater launches from the inside back edge of one skate and lands on the outside back edge of the other skate.
    • accelerator: In the only forward-facing jump, the skater lands on the outside back of the non-takeoff foot while moving backwards. The Axel is the most difficult jump because of the extra half-turn involved in taking off forward and landing backwards.
    • loop: The skater jumps off the back outer edge of the skate and lands on the same edge.

Here’s why Nissan stopped selling the Versa sedan

0

play

  • Nissan has ended production of the compact sedan “Versa” after 20 years.
  • This decision was made in response to sluggish sales of the Versa, with only 51,310 units sold in 2025.
  • The Versa was first launched in 2006 to appeal to the prospective market for small, fuel-efficient cars.

Nissan has decided to discontinue production of the Versa compact sedan, ending 20 years of production of the car, which was launched to much fanfare.

The news comes as Nissan reports that Versus will sell just 51,310 units in 2025, making it the slowest-selling of its mass-market sedan models. Among Nissan’s models, only the sports cars Z and GTR had lower sales than the Versa.

Why did Nissan discontinue Versa?

“In line with Nissan’s product strategy, Nissan Versa will be discontinued for the U.S. market in December 2025,” the Japanese automaker, which once had some of the most popular models in the sedan segment, said in a statement provided to USA TODAY.

“Nissan remains committed to providing affordable and stylish vehicles in the sedan segment with the Sentra and Altima, as well as strong value in the compact SUV segment with the Kicks,” Nissan said in a statement.

How many Versus did Nissan sell?

Versa sales have been up and down since its strong initial launch. Nissan will sell only 51,310 Versus units in 2025, down from its peak of 144,528 units in 2015. The trends in vehicle sales since its release are as follows.

  • 2024 | 42,589
  • 2023 | 24,807
  • 2022 | 13,396
  • 2021 | 60,913
  • 2020 | 48,273
  • 2019 | 66,596
  • 2018 | 75,809
  • 2017 | 106,772
  • 2016 | 132,214
  • 2015 | 144,528
  • 2014 | 139,781
  • 2013 | 117,352
  • 2012 | 113,327
  • 2011 | 99,730
  • 2010 | 99,705
  • 2009 | 82,906
  • 2008 | 85,182
  • 2007 | 79,443
  • 2006 | 22,044

What people say about Versa

Nissan launched the Versa in 2006, and stated in a press release that the name of the vehicle was derived from “multipurpose space.”

The vehicle was featured prominently in a product placement on the NBC series “Heroes,” where the character Hiro Nakamura requests a Versa at an airport rental car counter.

In its 2007 Versa review, Kelley Blue Book said of the compact sedan, “Touted as a ‘no-compromise’ value proposition that goes beyond basic amenities, the Versa’s interior is surprisingly roomy.”

The overhaul reflected assumptions made by Nissan and other manufacturers about the huge market for small cars that never materialized.

“Several automakers, including Nissan, are predicting a resurgence of entry-level compact cars, driven primarily by rising fuel prices,” the KBB review states. “These marketers are finding a ‘white space’ in the sub-$14,000 price range and are noting that a new generation of young people known as ‘echo boomers’ will soon reach driving age.”

Nissan recently considered discontinuing the Altima, but the company decided to postpone the large sedan until 2026.

President Trump: “The US will advance to Greenland before Russia or China”

play

President Donald Trump has said the United States will seize control of Greenland “the easy way” or “the hard way” and warned Russia and China would not miss the opportunity.

“Whether they like it or not, we are going to do something in Greenland,” he said. He did not say what the price would be for buying the land from Denmark, nor did he say what a potential military action would be.

“I want to get a deal the easy way, but if we can’t get a deal the easy way, we’re going to get a deal the hard way,” Trump said.

He made the comments at a news conference on January 9, during a meeting with some of the world’s top oil companies to discuss investments in Venezuela, just a week after the United States detained leader Nicolás Maduro and took him to New York on drug charges.

President Trump said that if the United States had not expanded into Venezuela to revitalize its oil industry, Russia or China would have done so. He also referred to Venezuela, located in the Western Hemisphere, as a neighboring country.

“By the way, we don’t want Russia or China to go to Greenland. If we don’t occupy Greenland, we’re going to have Russia or China as our neighbor,” Trump said. “That’s not going to happen.”

President Trump said Russian and Chinese destroyers, Russian submarines and large Chinese ships were already anchored outside Greenland.

Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark and is home to approximately 31 billion barrels of oil, about three-quarters of the United States’ reserves. But the territory banned drilling in 2021, citing environmental concerns.

White House aide Stephen Miller questioned Denmark’s right to control Greenland in a Jan. 5 interview with CNN.

President Trump treats ‘windmills’ and wind energy as garbage: ‘They’re losers’

0

play

President Donald Trump bragged about his opposition to wind turbines during a meeting with oil executives at the White House on Friday, January 9, reaffirming his long-held aversion to wind turbines.

“In case you don’t know, I’m not really interested in windmills,” the president told oil company executives. “Not a single wind turbine has been approved since I took office, and I intend to continue to do so.”

“My goal is to never build any windmills. They’re losers,” Trump said. He slammed wind farms in Europe and Palm Springs, California, citing inaccurate statistics about the number of wind turbines in China.

Europe is “losing a huge amount of wealth by putting up windmills all over the place,” the president said. “They’re destroying their country. They’re destroying beautiful landscapes. They’re destroying everything that’s beautiful.”

“Go to Palm Springs, California, and see what it’s like,” said President Trump, who has been erecting fences around wind turbines for at least 13 years. “It’s like a junkyard, a steel junkyard.”

President Trump said, “Almost all of our windmills are made in China.” “They make them and used to sell them to underdogs like Europe and underdogs like the United States.”

“All you have to do is say to China: ‘How many windmill fields does China have?’ So far we haven’t found anything,” he said. “They use coal, they use oil and gas, a little bit of nuclear power, but not a lot, but they don’t have windmills.”

According to the federal government’s Department of Energy, China is actually a world leader in the use of wind turbines for energy production.

How much wind energy is China installing?

In 2025, the Department of Energy reported that China will add 79 gigawatts of wind power capacity in 2024, increasing capacity by 18%. Total wind power capacity reached 521 gigawatts.

According to Statista, there are 138 offshore wind farms in operation in China as of April 2025. The company led the world in new offshore wind installations in 2024 for the seventh year in a row, according to the Global Wind Energy Council’s Global Offshore Wind Report, an international trade association.

According to the World Wind Energy Association, this market has the highest growth rate of any major market and is expected to install more than 87 gigawatts of wind power by 2025.

Wind and solar power are two of the fastest growing energy sectors in the United States, producing 17% of the nation’s electricity in 2024, according to the Department of Energy. Land-based wind turbines produce 10% of the nation’s electricity, most of it on private land, the industry group American Clean Power reported.

Jesse Lee, a senior adviser at Climate Power, an advocacy group focused on climate change and clean energy, said nearly 95% of new energy generation capacity in the United States comes from wind, solar and batteries. Since taking office a year ago, the president has “successfully promoted new wind and solar power” in a variety of ways, Lee said.

Clean Power criticizes President Trump’s meeting with the oil industry, which the advocacy group claims has donated hundreds of millions of dollars to influence Trump and other Republican campaigns, “destroying the nation’s clean energy industry and actually lowering energy costs for Americans.”

President Trump announced earlier this week that the United States would withdraw from 66 treaties, treaties and organizations, including the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, angering climate change and environmental advocacy groups.

What is the Trump administration’s stance on wind energy?

In the first year of his second administration, President Trump declared a national energy emergency, but also issued a flurry of executive orders and directives restricting new wind and solar projects and taking aim at subsidies and incentives for renewable energy. An executive order temporarily halts lease sales of offshore wind energy in federal waters and suspends approvals, permits and financing for both offshore and onshore wind power, USA TODAY previously reported.

The administration has canceled five projects underway off the coast of New England and is facing lawsuits from companies that had already invested heavily in new wind energy before the projects were canceled, according to reports in the Providence Journal and other news outlets on the USA TODAY Network in the region.

Federal officials were also directed to consider the environmental impacts of wind energy projects on wildlife and to consider the “economic costs associated with intermittent generation” and the impact of subsidies on the viability of the wind energy industry.

Mr. Lee said President Trump “did his best to ban wind and solar while data centers and AI are causing electricity demand to go through the roof.”

According to the Department of Energy, peak electricity demand in the United States hit a record high twice in July 2025.

In a meeting with executives on January 9, President Trump vowed to continue his work on wind energy, calling turbines the “worst form of energy.”

“That’s why we don’t approve, and we told the people we don’t approve windmills,” he said. “We may have to do something because some idiot in the Biden administration agreed to do something years ago.”

Judge blocks Trump administration from freezing $10 billion in child care funding to five states

A judge temporarily blocked HHS’ efforts to claw back billions of dollars in child care and family assistance funds aimed primarily at low-income Americans.

play

A federal judge on January 9 temporarily blocked the Trump administration’s attempt to freeze $10 billion in federal funding for child care programs in five Democratic-led states.

On January 6, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced it was suspending the funds, a move officials said was based on the government’s allegations of fraud and misuse of tax dollars in state-run programs. They also claim, without providing evidence, that noncitizens who are not eligible for benefits may have misused the funds.

On January 8, top prosecutors from California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota and New York filed a lawsuit against HHS seeking restitution of about $10 billion in child care and three programs for low-income families.

The Democratic attorney general warned that millions of Americans will lose access to child care after HHS withholds federal funding for child care and family support assistance programs aimed primarily at low-income Americans.

In a two-page order issued on January 9, U.S. Judge Arun Subramanian of the Southern District of New York granted a temporary restraining order to the states, blocking the administration from freezing the funds for the time being.

“Once again, our most vulnerable families are being forced to bear the brunt of this administration’s campaign of chaos and retribution,” New York Attorney General Letitia James, who has frequently led lawsuits against President Donald Trump, told reporters.

Prosecutors filed the lawsuit in Manhattan federal court. The lawsuit seeks the return of Congress-authorized child care development funds, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, and social welfare subsidies. Attorneys general say the federal government instituted a “shoot first, ask questions later” approach without going through the statutory process of identifying fraud and other wrongdoing.

“It’s unfortunate that the attorneys general in these Democratic-led states are less focused on reducing fraud and more focused on partisan political stunts,” HHS told USA TODAY, citing a Jan. 8 X post from Mike Stewart, the agency’s general counsel.

“HHS supports the decision to take this action to protect American taxpayers,” Stewart said. “In these states, we have identified serious concerns that require immediate review and action.”

It is unclear what charges he is facing. HHS did not respond to additional questions as Minnesota’s ongoing scandal over pandemic-era loan fraud has emerged as a partisan issue. Trump, a Republican, previously announced plans to investigate other Democratic states, including California, in the wake of the Minnesota scandal.

“We have a responsibility to protect taxpayer dollars and ensure these programs serve the families they were created to support,” Alex J. Adams, HHS assistant secretary for children and families, said in a statement. “When we have a credible concern about fraud or abuse, we take action.”

Five attorneys general said they had not been provided information on the issues raised by the administration.

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison initiated his administration’s first freeze on federal funding for small business loans, citing a viral video posted by right-wing YouTuber Nick Shirley about alleged day care fraud, among other things.

“The administration broke some very clear laws in trying to make these changes,” Ellison said. “They have not provided any legal justification for freezing this funding. They are ignoring clear requirements to make cuts to these programs.”

Rob Bonta, California’s top prosecutor, said the cuts will affect “millions of Californians.” Bonta added that about $5 billion of the $10 billion in the freeze would go to the nation’s largest states.

Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser said questions should be asked about what fraud exists and how to address it.

“This is not what this is about,” he said. “What matters is how the response is designed. (It’s) not designed to address fraud, but to punish and harm.”

The Jan. 9 order by Subramanian, an appointee of former President Joe Biden, expires in 14 days pending further orders from the court as the litigation continues.

How to make your car last 300,000 miles with simple maintenance

0

play

  • You can extend the life of your vehicle by following maintenance intervals.
  • Always use quality products such as reputable gas station or synthetic engine oil for your vehicle.

The lifespan of a vehicle is determined by many factors. Some of them are within your control, while others are beyond your control.

However, if you maintain your car properly, you can extend its lifespan. By taking care of your engine, fuel tank, and battery and using the highest quality products in your car, you can help your car last longer. If done correctly, it could last up to 300,000 miles.

Use good quality gas

Something that most car owners tend to overlook is the quality of their gasoline. While the average driver may choose the cheapest fuel price, they should choose the highest quality gasoline instead. Brands such as Shell, Chevron, Exxon, BP, and Mobil use high-quality additives in their fuels. In addition to filling your gas tank, it also helps clean some components of your fuel system. It’s also a good idea to add a bottle of fuel system cleaner to your gas tank at the same time as your oil change.

Always use high quality oil and oil filters

Just like gasoline, you should use the highest quality synthetic motor oil in your vehicle. Using the oil recommended by your car manufacturer will extend the life of your engine. A high quality oil filter should also be used. We recommend changing your oil approximately every 5,000 miles, but the interval depends on your mileage and the oil blend you use.

Be careful with other liquids

You should also keep track of other fluids in your car. Taking care of your transmission fluid and replacing it every few years before a problem is discovered is the best way to extend its life. Keeps the coolant reservoir filled to the proper level so that the engine runs at optimal temperature. Don’t forget to make sure your washer fluid is filled in case you need to spray and wipe your windshield.

Replace the engine air filter

This air filter allows the engine to breathe. It blocks and filters contaminants, ensuring only clean air is sent to the engine. After blocking all this buildup, these filters get dirty and need to be replaced. According to AutoZone, it’s best to replace your engine air filter every 12,000 miles.

Check all warning lights

At the end of your car’s lifespan, warning lights will come on on your dashboard trying to get your attention. No matter how big or small the warning is, you need to find a solution. By purchasing your own ODB-II scanner, you can diagnose your car’s codes before the problem becomes serious. Many auto parts stores also offer this service for free. If you find a problem that you can’t fix on your own, consult a trusted mechanic.

keep tires in good condition

A car cannot move without tires. Make sure it is filled to the pressure recommended by the manufacturer. This information is located on a label on the driver’s side door jamb. Be sure to replace it every 4,000 to 8,000 miles for more even wear and less stress on the suspension.

maintain the battery

Keeping the battery charged to the proper voltage is critical to starting the engine. If you plan on keeping your car parked for long periods of time, consider using a battery tender. Check the age of your battery as it degrades over time. If your battery is a few years old, consider having it tested to ensure the voltage is at optimal levels. This can be done at a dealership or auto parts store.

keep your car clean

Cleaning your car inside and out shows that you take good care of it. Cleaning and drying the exterior will keep the paint clean and remove contaminants that can cause rust. Keeping the interior clean is equally important. Spraying and cleaning internal surfaces removes dirt and prevents unpleasant odors. There’s no point in driving your car for hundreds of thousands of miles if the inside of your car is dirty.

Beware of recalls

Many vehicles are recalled by the manufacturer due to defects found in the vehicle. Regardless of the severity of the recall, it’s never a bad idea to at least get tested. Even cars that have been driven for many years may be affected. To find out if your vehicle has been recalled, enter your license plate number or VIN at https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls.

Don’t collide!

There is a popular saying in sports that the best ability is availability. This can also be applied to cars.

You can do everything right when it comes to car maintenance, but if you are unlucky enough to have a car accident, everything can go in vain. Sometimes unexpected collisions occur and there is nothing you can do about it. Focusing on what you can control and driving safely and responsibly is just as valuable as all the maintenance that will extend the life of your car. Make sure to pay attention to the rest of your car as well.

Coach Curt Cignetti and the No. 1 Hoosiers (14-0) handed the No. 5 Ducks (13-1) their only loss of the season in a close 30-20 road game in Eugene, Oregon. But it’s hard to beat a good team twice.

Indiana dominated Alabama in the Rose Bowl, defeating the Crimson Tide 38-3. Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Fernando Mendoza wasn’t asked to do much in the game, but he scored three touchdowns in the win.

Oregon State had its best defensive performance of the season, which could bode well to complement its potent offense. The Ducks defeated Texas Tech 23-0 in the Orange Bowl, forcing four turnovers in the win.

Oregon State denied Indiana a chance to extend its lead when Nasir Wyatt sacked Fernando Mendoza for a 20-yard loss on third-and-7 from the Oregon 37-yard line. This forces Indiana to punt.

Oregon started its next attack from its own 13-yard line, trailing 14-7 with 9:35 left in the first half.

Oregon State handed a pass to Jay Harris on third-and-two, but Michail Kamara beat him for a 1-yard tackle for a loss. Indiana got the ball back and looked for a two-point lead at their own 18-yard line.

prediction: Indiana 31, Oregon 20

Indiana feels like a team of destiny right now and had a great performance against Alabama. However, the Hoosiers defeated the Ducks again thanks to a strong performance from Fernando Mendoza and the run game. Indiana also forced two turnovers on Dante Moore.

Here are the Peach Bowl winners chosen by experts within the USA TODAY Sports Network.

  • Indiana 35, Oregon 21: The Hoosiers’ 30-20 win over the Ducks in Eugene in October started turning IU skeptics into believers. Indiana’s destruction of the Alabama Rose Bowl converted even the most ardent skeptic (cough, Paul Finebaum). The Hoosiers’ defense sacked Dante Moore six times and picked off the Ducks QB twice in the first matchup. And while Oregon State shut out a troublesome Texas Tech offense in the Orange Bowl, Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza leads one of the most balanced offensive lines in the nation. Believe it or not, Indiana football will be playing for the national championship. – Matt Greneske, USA TODAY
  • Indiana 20, Oregon 17: The game employs the old Las Vegas trick of flipping a coin and giving the favorite three points. Oregon State is an incredibly good team, and as Curt Cinetti said after the Rose Bowl, it’s hard to beat a good team twice. But it’s harder to beat a great team once, and Indiana is a great team. After all, Fernando Mendoza vs. Dante Moore is not the matchup here. It’s the trenches, where Indiana is the best state in the country, and arms against arms. Stars are important, but Indiana is made up of under-recruited players with shoulder injuries. With that in mind, Indiana won a muddy low-scoring game against Dan Lanning, subverting the coach’s motivational tactics of “no one believes in us” (of course, the irony of not believing in Oregon State here is lost on me). – Kevin Skiver, USA TODAY
  • Indiana 24, Oregon 20: The old adage that it’s hard to beat a team twice in a season has some merit, but sometimes it betrays a deeper truth. In some cases, one team is simply better than another. No matter what fans think about Indiana football based on the program’s mostly corrupt history, the Hoosiers are the best and most complete team in the sport this season, as they showed in their destruction of the Rose Bowl at Alabama. They will thwart a Ducks offense that struggled against Texas Tech’s front seven, and Fernando Mendoza will continue to shine brightly, leading Indiana to destinations previously unimaginable. – Craig Meyer, USA TODAY

Oil giants say big changes are needed to make President Trump’s push for Venezuela work

0

play

WASHINGTON — Some U.S. oil executives told President Donald Trump that their companies are not ready to invest in oil operations in Venezuela unless major changes are made to ensure the business’ survival.

When President Trump met with executives from 17 oil companies on January 9, nearly a week after the U.S. military captured President Nicolas Maduro, the oil industry pointed out challenges to Trump’s Venezuelan oil plan.

“We first entered Venezuela in the 1940s. We had our assets seized twice,” said ExxonMobil CEO Darren Woods. “So you can imagine that a third reentry would require some fairly significant changes from what we’ve seen here historically and from where we are now.”

President Trump said the United States would take control of 30 billion to 50 billion barrels of Venezuelan crude oil and was trying to persuade U.S. oil companies to spend billions of dollars upgrading aging oil infrastructure to boost the country’s energy production. He said it’s not enough for companies to sell oil to both Americans and Venezuelans and get their money back through profits.

But Mr Woods said existing legal and commercial challenges made the country’s oil “uninvestable” unless changes were made to legal, financial and safety guarantees. “Permanent investment protection is needed and domestic hydrocarbon laws need to change.”

If the Trump administration can address those needs, Woods said ExxonMobil could quickly “get back on track.” He said the company plans to assemble a technical team to assess the current state of Venezuela’s oil industry. “We haven’t been to this country in almost 20 years,” he said.

President Trump said he wants to reach agreements with oil companies that include security guarantees to keep them “physically safe in addition to their financial security.”

“We know what we want and what we have to have,” President Trump said of a potential deal. “We have to get them to invest and then get the money back as quickly as possible. And then we can divide everything between Venezuela, the United States and them. I think it’s easy. I think the equation is simple. We start with a brand new plate.”

Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, and Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum joined President Trump and oil executives at the meeting.

Harold Hamm, chairman and CEO of Continental Resources, told President Trump that he was “certainly excited as an explorer” about the possibility of investing in Venezuelan oil. “We all have that in our blood. It’s a very exciting country and we have a lot of reserves. There are challenges, but the industry knows how to deal with them.”

“Like Darren said, go in with your eyes open and do the best you can with the team you’ve got,” Hamm added, referring to ExxonMobil’s CEO.

The oil company most bullish about opportunities in Venezuela is Chevron, the only U.S. company currently operating there, with 3,000 employees in the country.

Chevron Vice Chairman Mark Nelson said the company’s oil production in Venezuela has increased by 40,000 barrels per day to 240,000 barrels per day over the past five to seven years.

“I think we will soon have a path forward to be able to scale up the increases from these joint ventures by 100%, essentially immediately,” Nelson said.

He said having Chevron employees already on site is a “clear advantage.”

ConocoPhillips Chairman and CEO Ryan Lance said the company needs to talk with banks to restructure the oil company’s debt, which invests billions of dollars in energy infrastructure. He singled out the Export-Import Bank, the federal government’s official export creditor.

“If we can do that and think boldly, we have the opportunity to quickly and quickly restore the quality of what has been lost in Venezuela over the last 25 years.”

At least one alternative energy expert also said Venezuela would be a tough sell for oil company executives.

Jesse Lee, a senior adviser at Climate Power and former senior adviser at the National Economic Council during the Biden administration, said oil companies “are going to need all kinds of guarantees to make a successful mathematical investment.” Climate Power is an American clean energy and climate change advocacy organization.

“I can’t imagine any industry putting $100 billion into a country that knows it’s going to go to war someday,” Lee said. Contributor: Dinah Boyles Pulver

Marriott hotel employee fired over ICE employee information leak

An independent Marriott hotel in Bloomington, Minnesota, fired an employee for leaking names, emails, and images of ICE agents.

play

An independent Marriott hotel in Bloomington, Minnesota, has fired an employee for leaking the names, emails and images of immigration officials.

CSM Lodging, which operates the Residence Inn near the Mall of America, said in a statement: “The privacy and safety of our guests is of the utmost importance to us. We learned of this situation Wednesday evening and immediately investigated and identified the person responsible for taking the image in the post.” said in a statement.

CSM Lodging first confirmed to Fox News the employee’s termination, saying, “The individual is no longer an employee of our organization.”

An image of Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers checking into a Residence Inn was posted on Reddit, but was removed by the social media platform for violating its rules.

ICE shared a tweet with USA TODAY thanking the hotel for “taking immediate action and terminating the employee.” “Revealing the personal information of ICE agents and employees puts them and their families at great risk,” ICE said.

The incident comes as the city of Minneapolis is reeling from the shooting death of Renee Good by ICE agents. The deadly encounter sparked anger among some residents and local officials over the Trump administration’s response to immigration enforcement there.

Hilton Hotels came under fire this week after the Department of Homeland Security alleged that its chain of hotels had launched a “coordinated campaign” to deny service to INS agents and other federal employees.

The Hampton Inn in Lakeville, Minn., about 40 miles from Minneapolis, canceled reservations made by ICE agents, according to DHS.

Hilton has terminated its relationship with the independently owned and operated hotel by Everpeak Hospitality.

Everpeak Hospitality said in a written statement: “We are reaching out to the affected guests to ensure that we are accommodated. We do not discriminate against any individual or agency, and we apologize to the affected guests.” “We are committed to welcoming all guests and operating in accordance with our brand standards, applicable laws and our role as a professional hospitality provider.”

Washington pipe bomb suspect pleads not guilty

0

The bomb did not explode, but was discovered the next day, just before supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol.

play

WASHINGTON – A man accused of setting off pipe bombs in Washington the night before the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol pleaded not guilty Friday to two explosives-related charges.

Brian Cole, 30, is accused of leaving two explosive devices outside the Democratic-Republican National Committee headquarters on the night of January 5, 2021.

Cole, wearing a tan prison jumpsuit, made his own plea during a brief hearing in Washington federal court.

The bomb, which did not explode, was discovered the next day, shortly before supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the nearby Capitol Building in a failed attempt to stop Congress from certifying the 2020 election.

Cole is charged with two counts of interstate transportation of explosives and malicious attempt to use explosives.

The judge found evidence that Cole posed a danger to public safety and ordered him held in custody pending trial.

FBI agents struggled for nearly five years to identify the suspect. Cole was arrested and indicted last month following a new review of evidence ordered by top FBI officials appointed by President Trump.

Prosecutors said Cole made a detailed confession in an interview with FBI agents after his arrest. He expressed dissatisfaction with both political parties and echoed Trump’s false claims that the 2020 election was fraudulent, according to court filings.

In an FBI interview, Mr. Cole denied that the bomb planting was connected to the Congressional election certification and the events of the next day.

X restricts Grok access after a “undressing” incident. The problem persists.

0

play

Elon Musk’s Company X is restricting access to Grok after an AI chatbot generated thousands of “undressed” photos of what appeared to be women and minors. However, despite the changes, chatbots are still being used to create sexualized images of women without their consent.

On January 9th, xAI restricted image generation and editing on the X platform. This restriction only appears to apply when users tag Grok in response to an X post, not when uploading images directly to Grok. When a free user attempts to generate an image below a post, Grok denies the request but provides a subscription link to “unlock these features.”

This restriction still does not solve the problem of sexual deepfakes in X. USA TODAY has reached out to X and xAI for comment.

“Company X’s decision is too little, too late,” Alexios Mantsalis, director of Cornell Tech’s Security, Trust and Safety Initiative, said in a statement to USA TODAY. “They’ve turned this tool of mass sexual abuse into a special perk for paying users,” said Jenna Sherman, campaign director at UltraViolet, a gender justice organization that works to hold the tech and corporate sectors accountable.

Technology experts say safeguards need to be in place from the beginning to prevent the creation of non-consensual deepfakes of intimate images.

Cliff Steinhauer, director of information security and engagement at the National Cybersecurity Alliance, said in a statement to USA TODAY that “access restrictions alone are not comprehensive protection, as motivated malicious actors may still find ways to circumvent access restrictions.” “The fact that similar restrictions do not apply to all versions of Grok highlights the importance of consistent platform-wide protection.”

Three U.S. senators sent a letter to Apple and Google on January 6 asking them to enforce their terms of service and remove X and Grok from their app stores until X’s policy violations are resolved.

What’s going on with Grok? Explanation of backlash

For more than a week, X users have been asking Grok to edit images of women without clothes or “in bikinis,” and the chatbot complied.

One such woman is British-based content creator Bella Wallersteiner, who posted a selfie on X on December 31st wishing her approximately 100,000 followers a Happy New Year. She scrolled through the replies and liked the positive tweets. Then she saw a photo of herself wearing a “Hello Kitty micro bikini.” The photo was edited and published without her consent, Wallersteiner told USA TODAY on January 6. Conservative influencer Ashley St. Clair, who has a child with Elon Musk, was also the target of a digital attack, she wrote.

This trend is part of a growing problem that experts call image-based sexual abuse, in which non-consensual intimate deepfake images (NCII) are used to degrade or exploit others. A similar incident involving X was reported in July. Although anyone can be a victim, 90% of victims of image-based sexual abuse are women.

The changes to X appear to have limited the amount of sexually explicit content generated and shared on X, but do not completely solve the problem or lessen the harm already done to victims. Experts say X could have completely disabled Grok’s image generation capabilities, but it did not do so until stronger security measures were implemented.

“Restricting the number of people who can create sexual deepfakes containing child sexual abuse material (CSAM) does not change the fact that Grok is still being used to create this content,” Sherman said.

Affected users want to hold X accountable and see real changes

Amid the controversy, Nikita Via, head of product at X, said engagement on the platform was at an all-time high.

X and xAI did not respond to USA TODAY’s requests for comment on Jan. 6.

Many of Wallersteiner’s photos have been removed, but she says new demands keep coming, especially as she continues to speak out. Although she has no intention of taking legal action against X or xAI, she wants the UK to enact legislation on deepfake NCII that protects victims from this type of abuse and holds tech companies accountable.

For now, Wallersteiner is still in X, but he is questioning his choice. “X has become an increasingly hateful platform and not a shining place for women,” she says.

New cars generating hype for 2026, 2027 include secret collaboration between Sony and Honda

0

play

  • Jeep Recon tests off-road EV performance.
  • We will reveal the super secret Sony Honda car for the first time.

From the first all-electric off-road Jeep to Slate’s promised Jeff Bezos-backed do-it-yourself pickup and SUV, a number of important and interesting new vehicles will hit the roads in 2026.

Will anyone address rising costs? Will a new vehicle with a familiar name impress people? Will a new hit be born? What brand spends billions of dollars on a new model only to fail?

As always, I’m grateful for Automotive News’ authoritative Future Product Guide. This guide made a huge contribution to the research for this column.

Here are more than a dozen vehicles to keep an eye on as the new year begins.

2026 Afera

Afeela, a 50-50 joint venture between Sony and Honda, is notoriously secretive, but the Japanese industrial giants are promising more information when the company’s first vehicle, the Afeela 1, debuts at the CES electronics show in January.

The compact sedan will be produced at Honda’s East Liberty, Ohio, plant. Prices start at $89,900 and you can expect amazing technology.

There’s a lot of interest in Afeela because the challenge of blending consumer electronics know-how with automotive design and engineering has defeated seasoned companies like Apple. The model year of the car has not been announced.

2026 Audi Q3

Audi’s smallest SUV, which goes on sale in the first quarter, aims to maintain the momentum the luxury brand started with this year’s new A5 and Q5. All-wheel drive is standard. Prices start at $43,700. The standard 2.0L engine’s output increases to 255 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, reducing 0-60 mpg acceleration time from 1.6 seconds to 5.5 seconds.

2027 chevrolet volt

The compact Volt returns after more than a year off the market as GM’s most affordable EV.

The new Volt will look a lot like the car that will end production in 2023, but the battery, motor, and other distinctive technologies are all new. It will be built in Kansas City, Kansas, and sales are expected to begin in the first quarter.

At launch, it will have a starting price of $29,990 and a range of 255 miles, with lower prices expected later this year.

honda series 0

The 0 Series SUV, Honda’s first EV developed entirely in-house, is scheduled to go on sale in the second half of 2027.

Honda is reorganizing its Ohio assembly facility to manufacture a variety of EVs.

2026 Honda Prelude

This elegant coupe aims to bring back the excitement of the sporty Prelude created by Honda in the ’80s and ’90s. Both the body and interior are unique. The suspension is from the excellent Civic Type R. The drivetrain is shared with the Civic Hybrid.

The interior looks and feels great. The big question is how well the electronic system mimics the sound and feel of the previous sporty Prelude.

2026 Jeep Recon

As the first all-electric Jeep aimed at serious off-roading, the rugged Recon must deliver on the brand’s core values or risk undermining them. Jeep promises incredible performance, including 650 horsepower, 620 pound-feet of torque, and up to 250 miles of range.

Questions include how far the Recon’s battery can go on tough off-road trails and how the SUV’s weight affects its performance on mud, snow, and deep sand. Prices start at $65,000.

2027 kia telluride

The impressive three-row Telluride changed the way people viewed Kia cars when it debuted in 2019. Expectations are high for the new model, which will be produced in West Point, Georgia and released in the first quarter.

New features include more power with a 329-horsepower hybrid powertrain expected to get up to 35 mpg, and a higher-performance X-Pro model with 9.1 inches of ground clearance and an electronic limited-slip rear differential.

2026 Lexus IS

Expected in the second half of this year, Lexus’ rugged midsize sedan will hit the big time with dramatic new styling, hybrid and EV models.

The same systems and architecture would underpin the radically new Camry that came later.

2026 Ram 1500 REV

Ram, and now Ford, have staked much of their engineering and financial muscle on the bet that extended range electric vehicles (EREVs) will win over buyers by combining the efficiency and performance of electricity with the towing capabilities of traditional pickups. Simplified enough to drive engineers crazy, an EREV is essentially a plug-in hybrid with longer electric range. Let’s say 150 miles for a Ram 1500 REV.

Engineers and automotive writers love this technology, but it hasn’t yet caught on with buyers. Let’s see if Ram can change that.

Rivian R2

Rivian’s compact electric SUV aims to offer best-in-class technology and performance, with prices starting at less than $50,000, much lower than the larger R1S SUV and R1T pickup. The R2 seats five people and is designed to travel 300 miles on a single charge.

Sales are scheduled to begin in the first half of 2026, but the model year of the R2 is unknown.

slate pickup

Slate’s plan to tackle vehicle affordability by allowing people to add on common features themselves — Want a backseat? Bolt inside — raises questions, but the startup gained credibility when news broke that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos was an early investor.

Slate hopes to start selling a two-door small electric pickup at the end of 2026. The model year of the vehicle has not been announced. Prices are expected to start under $30,000.

2027 Toyota Corolla

The Corolla will move to a new multi-energy platform developed to support internal combustion, hybrid and EV drivetrains, a fundamental change for one of the world’s best-selling cars. A concept unveiled at the Japan Mobility Show in October suggested similarly innovative styling.

2026 Toyota bZ Woodland

The five-passenger bZ Woodland electric SUV promises 260 miles of range, 8.3 inches of ground clearance, and 3,500 pounds of towing capacity. The aim is to add some off-road flair to Toyota’s ever-growing EV lineup.

When does the 2026 tax filing season start? Here’s what you need to do first

0

play

The IRS said Americans should spend the next few weeks getting their tax forms together if they want to be among the first to receive their returns (and refunds) when tax season begins on January 26th.

According to the IRS, Americans have until April 15 to file their 2025 tax returns and pay any taxes owed. The agency expects to receive about 164 million individual income tax returns this year, with most taxpayers filing electronically.

According to a study by Credit Karma, which provides credit score information, one-third of Americans rely on their tax refunds to get by. And with refunds expected to be larger than usual this year thanks to the tax and spending package passed by President Donald Trump in July, Americans may want to prepare their refunds early and get in line for the big day, experts said.

“Many filers can expect an increase in their refund amount or a reduction in their outstanding balance, in some cases by up to $1,000,” said Lisa Green Lewis, a certified public accountant (CPA) and tax expert at TurboTax. The average refund in 2025 was $2,939.

How can Americans prepare?

IRS.gov has online tools and resources available to taxpayers before, during and after filing their federal tax return, the agency said. The site also includes information about how July’s tax and spending bill will affect your taxes and potentially increase your refund, the IRS said.

IRS Chief Executive Frank Bisignano said the agency “stands ready to help taxpayers meet their tax obligations during the 2026 filing season.” Its “information systems have been updated to incorporate new tax laws and are ready to efficiently and effectively process taxpayer returns during filing season.”

The agency is encouraging Americans to create and use personal online accounts that provide information such as outstanding balances, paid or scheduled payments, and tax records.

Additionally, the IRS is phasing out paper tax refund checks and strongly encourages taxpayers to open a bank account to receive their tax refund via direct deposit.

What’s new this season?

The tax and spending bill introduced a number of new provisions that are retroactive to 2025. Here are some new rules and forms to keep an eye on this tax season, the IRS said.

  • New schedule 1-A Claim recently enacted tax credits, such as tax exemptions on tips, tax exemptions on overtime, tax exemptions on car loan interest, and/or enhanced deductions for seniors.
  • Register a Trump account. Parents, guardians, or other authorized individuals can create a Trump Account for their child.
  • Form 1099-K To report payments received from credit cards, payment apps, and online marketplaces.
  • Form 1099-DA To report digital asset revenue from broker transactions.

Why should taxpayers file as soon as possible?

Richard Pong, a San Francisco certified public accountant, said there are many benefits to filing early. They include:

  • Receive your refund faster
  • You can budget for taxes due April 15th
  • Lock your return to avoid scammers who use your Social Security number to file fraudulent returns and steal your refund.
  • Get more attention from tax professionals if needed

Where can taxpayers get help?

If you’re stuck and need help, here are some suggestions from the IRS.

What happens after I file my tax return?

If you need a refund, please use “Where’s my refund?” Tools to track your status. Your return must include your exact refund amount, Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer ID Number (ITIN), and filing status.

Information is typically available approximately 24 hours after you electronically file your current year’s return or 4 weeks after you file your paper return.

Information is updated once a day overnight, but is unavailable each morning during the update period, typically between 4:00 AM and 5:00 AM Eastern Time.

If you prefer the mobile app, you can also check your refund on IRS2Go.

How long will it take to receive my tax refund?

The time it takes to receive your refund depends on how you filed.

The IRS says if you file electronically and your return is accurate and complete, you should receive your refund within three weeks, and even less if you choose direct deposit.

If you mailed your paper return, your refund should be available within approximately 6 to 8 weeks from the date the IRS receives your return, assuming it is accurate and complete.

Venezuela plans protests over ICE in California. Please check the location

0

play

Protests are planned across California this weekend over the Trump administration’s actions against Venezuela and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), days after an immigration officer shot and killed Renee Nicole Good, 37, in Minneapolis.

Part of the demonstration is called “ICE Out For Good,” and several events share the same description. Renee Nicole Good’s death is “part of a broader pattern of unchecked violence, impunity, and abuse perpetrated by federal immigration enforcement against members of our community.”

The demonstrations also occurred after federal agents shot and wounded two people in Portland, Oregon, on January 8th. The Department of Homeland Security said one of the men was affiliated with the Torren de Aragua gang, and the other was a “suspect” of the gang. This week’s shootings come amid ongoing tensions between federal immigration authorities and communities across the country.

Other demonstrations call for the removal of ICE agents from communities and an “end to the occupation of Venezuela.” On January 3, the United States detained Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife. President Donald Trump has previously said the United States would “run” the country until a democratic transition occurs. Some of this weekend’s demonstrations appear to be specifically focused on oil companies, which are growing profits as the Trump administration turns its attention to Venezuela’s oil industry.

In Los Angeles, protesters and faith leaders gathered on January 8 to rally for good, and one participant told the USA TODAY Network that he wants a thorough investigation into what happened. That same night, a crowd had gathered in Boyle Heights for another demonstration over Goode.

Californians living in the Bay Area from Ventura County could see demonstrations on Saturday, Jan. 10, at least based on planned events known to USA TODAY Network.

CFP semifinals, Indiana vs. Oregon

0

play

The Big Ten is guaranteed one team in the College Football Playoff Championship Game, with No. 1 Indiana State facing No. 5 Oregon State in the Peach Bowl semifinals.

The Hoosiers and Ducks are familiar foes when the teams met in October, with Indiana emerging with an important road win and propelling the Hoosiers to their first Rose Bowl appearance since the 1967 season.

Oregon State wants something in return and has a history. Of the six rematches between the Power Four teams in the Bowl Alliance, Bowl Championship Series, and College Football Playoff, all six were by teams that lost regular season games.

Will the Ducks advance to No. 7, or will Indiana continue on its way to a national title, which would have seemed crazy two years ago? Our experts take their opinions into account and make their selections.

Peach Bowl Indiana vs. Oregon predictions

matt haze

Nothing has changed since the October game in Eugene. The Ducks played well defensively in their quarterfinal win over Texas Tech, but Indiana’s offense is light years from what the Red Raiders showed last week. Oregon State wasn’t able to stop the Hoosiers in October, and they won’t be able to stop them in the future. Indiana 37, Oregon 17.

jordan mendoza

Can Indiana beat Oregon for the second time? Both teams had dominant records in the quarterfinals, and the Hoosiers will do their best to stop a much-improved defense. But Indiana has a clutch gene that showed itself all season long, and it doesn’t go away in the semifinals. Fernando Mendoza threw the ball effectively, and Oregon State had several chances to fight back, but they were unable to get past Indiana, and the team in first place in the playoffs will advance to the national championship game. Indiana 29, Oregon 27.

Paul Mayerberg

It will take a huge effort to conquer Indiana. But as shown in the Orange Bowl, Oregon can get it done on defense. The Ducks need to learn from this year’s 30-20 loss to Indiana and bring new ideas to the offense. But it will take some ingenuity to beat the Hoosiers. Indiana 37, Oregon 23.

Eric Smith

If history is to be believed, Indiana will never be two games away from a national championship. So the fact that no team in the last 30 years has won twice in the same season in the national title race is nothing to worry about. However, the game against Oregon still has big challenges and will likely be the toughest game remaining. Look for the Ducks and Dante Moore to take advantage of the familiarity of regular season games to improve their play and come away with a dramatic win. Oregon State 23, Indiana State 21.

Eddie Timanas

The pick-six made the score of the first matchup between the Hoosiers and Ducks appear closer than it actually was. Indiana State pretty much controlled the game. Hoosiers quarterback Fernando Mendoza will not repeat the mistakes of the first matchup and Indiana will advance to the title game. Indiana 35, Oregon 17.

blake topmeyer

The previous Indiana-Oregon matchup in Eugene was a close game, but at the end of the game there wasn’t much question as to who was the better team. Indiana seemed to be better.

Why should a rematch in neutral territory, three time zones away from Oregon, play out any differently? No way.

Oregon State had the edge against Texas Tech, but Indiana looked even better against Alabama. The Hoosiers have proven time and time again that they are the most complete team in the nation.

Oregon’s defense is good. Indiana is better. The Ducks have a good quarterback. Indiana is better. This game can be played in different positions. Oregon is great. Maybe even something really good. Indiana is much better. Indiana 31, Oregon 21.

The IRS says you must use direct deposit to receive your tax refund. Here’s why:

0

play

With tax refunds expected to be larger this year than previous years, many Americans may be wondering how they can get their money back as quickly as possible. The IRS says the fastest way so far is electronically.

Every year, tax refunds provide a windfall benefit to millions of Americans. For most people, it’s the biggest payday of the year. Typically, 75% of Americans receive a refund each year.

The average refund in 2025 was $2,939, according to IRS data. Some tax experts expect the average to rise this year because of the tax and spending package that President Donald Trump passed in July. Nancy Vanden Houten, chief economist at the University of Oxford, said the total tax savings for taxpayers could reach an additional $50 billion because the IRS did not update its withholding schedules to account for the new provisions retroactively to early 2025.

Although the IRS can mail you a paper check, the fastest and safest method is through free electronic direct deposit, the tax agency says. More than 9 out of 10 taxpayers receive their refund through direct deposit, but the IRS wants to push that number even higher. The IRS began phasing out paper checks for individual taxpayers on September 30 of last year.

“Paper checks are more than 16 times more likely to be lost, stolen, altered, or delayed than electronic payments,” the IRS said. “Direct deposit also avoids the possibility of your refund check being returned to the IRS as undeliverable.”

How does direct deposit work?

If you are using tax software To complete your return:

Select Direct Deposit as your refund method and enter your bank account number and routing number.

The routing number that identifies your bank’s branch location can be found in the bottom left corner of your check or on your bank’s website. The account number is located in the bottom right corner of the check. Alternatively, sign in to your online banking account or call your bank branch.

If using Taxpayer:

Let the pro know that you would like to make a direct deposit.

You can even increase the speed. “A combination of direct deposit and electronic filing is the fastest way to receive your refund,” the IRS said.

If you are filing on paper:

However, you can still use direct deposit even if you are filing on paper. Please mark your return as direct deposit and include your information.

Please be sure to double-check your entries to avoid mistakes or delays. If you forget your account number or routing number, the IRS may send you a paper check.

What if I don’t have a bank account?

Don’t worry. There is still time to open a bank account. You can find it on the FDIC website or using the National Credit Union Administration’s Credit Union Locator Tool. You can also ask the creator if they offer other electronic payment options.

Otherwise, you may be able to deposit your refund to a reloadable prepaid debit card or mobile app. Many reloadable prepaid cards and mobile apps have a routing number and account number, which may be different from your card number. Check with your financial institution to see if your card or app can accept deposits, and double-check your routing and account numbers.

Can I split my refund across multiple accounts?

yes. This is a convenient way to manage your money by transferring a portion of your refund to your account for immediate use and a portion for future savings.

You can file your return electronically using tax software, or if you file a paper return, you can use IRS Form 8888, Refund Distribution.

You can split your refund in any proportion and deposit funds directly into up to three different accounts at a U.S. financial institution, reloadable prepaid debit card, or mobile app.

Refunds can only be deposited directly into a U.S. or U.S.-related account in your name, your spouse’s name, or both in the case of a joint account. Only three electronic refunds may be deposited to a single financial account or prepaid debit card.

How long does it take to receive my tax refund via direct deposit?

For taxpayers who file electronically and choose direct deposit, most refunds are issued within 21 days.

The IRS’ “Where’s My Refund” tool allows you to track when the IRS received your tax return, approved your refund, and issued your refund. The money should be in your account within five days from the date the IRS approves your refund.

The IRS says if you mailed a paper return and are expecting a refund, it could take more than four weeks for your return to be processed.

If you claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Supplemental Child Tax Credit, the IRS cannot, by law, issue those refunds until mid-February. The report said it expects most EITC/Supplemental CTC-related refunds for early filers to be available in taxpayers’ bank accounts or debit cards by March 3, if they choose direct deposit and there are no other issues with their tax returns.

Can I track my refund?

yes. Whether you receive a paper check or have it deposited directly into one account or three accounts, you can use Where’s My Refund? Check out the features on the IRS website or call 800-829-1954.

You can check the status of your income tax refund after 24 hours if you filed electronically or 4 weeks if you filed paper. Information is updated once a day and overnight. Your return will require your Social Security or Taxpayer ID number, filing status, and exact refund amount.

If you split your refund, a “Where’s my refund?” message will be included confirming that your refund has been split, but it won’t specify the amount that will be credited to each account. You’ll see the estimated date of your deposit, and if the IRS adjusts your refund due to a calculation error or other reason, you’ll also see the amount of that adjustment.

What is President Trump’s approval rating? Impeachment negotiations begin in busy 2026

0

With just over a week until 2026, President Donald Trump is looking ahead to the midterm elections.

He told House Republicans on Jan. 6 that they needed to maintain their majority to avoid a third impeachment. But polls consistently show President Trump’s approval ratings are waning, which won’t help the party at the polls in November.

But Trump still doesn’t shy away from controversy. On January 3, after months of increasing US pressure on the oil-rich country, US forces captured Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and his wife in a surprise attack. President Trump has also talked about taking over Greenland, although the legality of the move is hotly debated.

Criticism of the administration has grown domestically after a federal immigration officer shot and killed a woman in Minneapolis on January 7, and another officer shot and killed two people the next day in Portland, Oregon. Domestic news was reported after the latest opinion poll was conducted, but let’s take a look at President Trump’s approval rating following the intervention in Venezuela.

What is Donald Trump’s approval rating?

According to an average compiled by RealClearPolitics and the New York Times, President Trump’s approval ratings are net negative, but appear to have rebounded slightly and begun to stabilize after a sharp drop in November.

According to RealClearPolitics’ graphics, as of January 27, 2025, President Trump’s approval rating was 50.5% and his rating was net positive, but by March 13th, he had turned net negative with an approval rating of 47.8% and a disapproval rating of 48.5%. Approval ratings reached an all-time low of 42.3% on November 14, as controversy over Jeffrey Epstein’s emails intensified after the end of the government shutdown. The following week, his disapproval rating rose to a season high of 55.6% on November 21st. As of January 9, 2026, 44.1% approve and 52.7% disapprove, according to RealClearPolitics.

Trump’s approval rating fell from 52% in January 2025 to 44% in April, and remained roughly flat in the months since, according to a New York Times tally. Trump’s lowest approval rating of his term is 41%, which he first reached on November 12, according to the Times. The disapproval rate also rose to 56% on November 19, the highest level this term, according to the aggregation company. According to the Times, as of January 9, 2026, 43% approve and 55% disapprove.

The Economist/YouGov: 49% think President Trump is trying to cover up Epstein’s crimes

A weekly poll conducted by The Economist and YouGov from January 2nd to 5th found that 39% of Americans approved of President Trump’s job performance, while 56% disapproved. The poll surveyed 1,551 U.S. adults and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

The poll also asked about President Trump’s response to the Jeffrey Epstein controversy, which intensified when the Justice Department announced in late December that it had a long way to go before releasing all the files that had been scheduled for release on Dec. 19. According to YouGov, views on the relationship between Trump and Epstein have remained largely unchanged in recent months.

In the poll, 49% of Americans said Trump was trying to cover up Epstein’s crimes, compared to 30% who said he did not. Overall, only 25% of Americans approve of President Trump’s handling of the Epstein investigation, while 56% disapprove.

CBS News: Americans are divided on Venezuela

In a CBS News/YouGov poll conducted from January 5th to 7th, 41% of respondents approved of President Trump’s job performance, while 59% disapproved. The poll surveyed 2,325 U.S. adults and had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.4 percentage points.

The poll found that 48% of people support US military action in Venezuela, while 52% oppose it. Whether people approve of this move is likely to be related to why they believe the United States captured Mr. Maduro.

“At this point, most people believe that one of the Trump administration’s objectives is to gain access to Venezuelan oil and expand American power in the region. And when Americans think that is a big part of those objectives, they tend to disapprove,” CBS reported.

People who believe the effort is primarily about drug cessation are more likely to support the intervention, the pollster found.

How does President Donald Trump’s approval rating compare to previous presidents?

Trump’s approval rating as the 45th and 47th president in December, his first year in office, was lower than that of any other modern president during the same period, according to a historical analysis by Gallup. According to Gallup, his December confirmation compares to that of other presidents in their first year in office.

  • Trump (December 2025) – 36% support
  • Joe Biden (December 2021) – 43% support
  • President Trump (December 2017) – 36% approve
  • Barack Obama (December 2009) – 50% approve
  • George W. Bush (December 2001) – 86% approved
  • Bill Clinton (December 1993) – 53% support
  • George H.W. Bush (December 1989) – 71% approved
  • Ronald Reagan (December 1981) – 49% support

Jesse Ventura calls President Trump a ‘coward’ and says he ‘owes’ him another term

0

play

Former Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura has criticized President Donald Trump and threatened to run for re-election after being fatally shot by an immigration officer in his home state.

“(Trump) was a coward who was a draft evader, and when he served his country, he did what every rich white kid would do. I wasn’t a rich white kid. We had to go,” Ventura, 74, told local reporters on January 8 when asked for his response to the shooting death of Renee Nicole Good by a federal immigration officer in Minneapolis. “Can you tell me what courage is?”

Good’s death, which was captured on video by a bystander, sparked protests and condemnation from local and state authorities, who refuted the Trump administration’s claim that the agents acted in self-defense.

Ventura says Minneapolis shooting ‘didn’t have to happen’

“What happened yesterday didn’t have to happen,” Ventura told reporters, calling Good’s shooting a “tragedy” and a “murder.”

“We’re in the Third World now. You want to know why? I’m an expert. I’ve been there. I spent 17 months in Southeast Asia while draft dodgers played golf,” said Ventura, who served as governor of Minnesota from 1999 to 2003 and is inducted into the WWE Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Ventura is a former Navy SEAL and Vietnam veteran. Mr. Trump was of the generation eligible for the Vietnam War, but after receiving several student draft deferments and medical exemptions, he did not serve.

Some lawmakers are calling for the arrest of Minneapolis shooting suspect Jonathan Ross in court documents. The day after Goode’s shooting, two people were injured in another shooting by federal agents in Portland, Oregon.

The shooting highlighted growing tensions between the Trump administration’s aggressive efforts to deport illegal immigrants and local leaders who oppose it.

“Freedom doesn’t mean arresting people without a warrant,” Ventura said. “We have a system here. It’s called the Constitution, and we have a party called the Republican Party, and they don’t seem to want to abide by the Constitution.”

USA TODAY has reached out to the White House regarding Ventura’s comments.

After Waltz declines re-election, “Maybe it’s Jesse’s turn”

Ventura’s comments came days after Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz announced he would not run for a third term.

Walz was the Democratic nominee for vice president in Kamala Harris’ 2024 campaign, but withdrew her re-election bid amid mounting pressure over allegations of fraud in the state’s social welfare programs.

“Maybe it’s Jesse’s turn. I’ve only served one term. I owe a second term,” Ventura said.

California steps in to replace lost federal EV tax credit

0

play

California is moving to recoup at least some of the $7,500 federal electric vehicle tax credit it recently lost to President Donald Trump’s administration and Congress.

California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat considered a likely 2028 presidential candidate, announced on Friday, January 9, a plan to spend $200 million from the state’s budget to provide an “on-the-bond” electric vehicle rebate that would provide instant discounts on EVs in the state, which has more plug-in models than any other state in the nation. The governor did not specify the specific amount of credits he expects to soon be available to car buyers in the state.

California’s plan comes shortly after President Trump won the 2024 presidential election and a year after Newsom promised to step in to offer consumers discounts on electric vehicles if Trump followed through on his campaign promise to eliminate the $7,500 federal tax credit. In fact, President Trump made good on these promises and passed a bill in Congress that would end the tax credit on September 30, 2025.

Why is California stepping in to provide cash for EV buyers?

California has the highest percentage of car buyers choosing electric vehicles.

According to the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, which lobbies most major automakers in Washington, EVs and hybrids infringed on 22.9% of new light vehicle registrations in California in the second quarter of 2025, the latest data released by the group. Colorado was the only other state with a market share above 20% in the second quarter of 2025. Automakers have lamented the loss of federal incentives for EVs, and some have cut back on plans to make future electric models in light of changing federal support for the technology. California Air Resources Board Chair Lauren Sanchez said in an exclusive interview with USA Today that the state is moving aggressively in offering EV rebates because “the rest of the global market is moving toward zero-emission vehicles,” despite a decline in federal aid levels under the Trump administration. Sanchez said adopting EVs is “California pride” because “one-third of EV sales are done in California.”

Under California’s previous EV tax credit program, which ran from 2013 to 2024, the state spent $1.49 billion on tax credits for 586,000 vehicles, according to CARB.

Are used EVs eligible for rebates?

Under the old federal tax credit, used EVs could receive a tax credit of up to $4,000. The used EV tax credit was first added in 2022 by former President Joe Biden’s administration. Previously, only new EVs were eligible for the tax credit. Sanchez said California is still considering whether it can offer rebates on used EVs under Newsom’s plan.

“Given the importance of used EVs in California, the team is seriously considering how used EV incentives can work,” she said.

So what happened after the federal EV tax credit ran out?

Some of the most popular electric vehicle models saw sales decline significantly in the fourth quarter of 2025 after setting records in the third quarter as car buyers rushed to take advantage of the $7,500 federal tax credit before it expires at the end of September 2025.

Here’s how some of the best-selling EVs in the U.S. performed in Q3 compared to Q4.

  • Tesla Model 3 and Model Y | Q3 2025: 481,166 | Q4 2025: 406,585
  • Ford Mustang Mach-E | Q3 2025: 20,177 | Q4 2025: 9,658
  • Hyundai Ioniq 5 | Q3 2025: 8,408 | Q4 2025: 2,279
  • Honda Prologue | Q3 2025: 20,236 | Q4 2025: 2,641
  • Volkswagen ID.4 | Q3 2025: 4,518 | Q4 2025: 248

What are people saying about California’s move to backfill EV credits?

Automakers said that incentivizing EV sales is a policy that has worked in the past and welcomed California’s move to step in to provide credits to EV buyers in the nation’s most populous state.

“At this stage in the transition and given current market conditions, consumer incentives could lead to increased adoption and affordability of EVs in California and support the national automotive and battery industry base,” Automotive Innovation Alliance President John Bozzella said in a statement.
