Savannah Guthrie’s mother abduction timeline reveals new details

0

Investigators on Thursday provided an updated timeline of the kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of “Today” host Savannah Guthrie.

At a Feb. 5 press conference, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told reporters that doorbell camera footage helped authorities assemble a new sequence of events in Guthrie’s kidnapping. She was first reported missing on Sunday, February 1, after members of a local church called her family and expressed concern that she had not attended church services that morning.

Here’s a closer look at what we know so far. It is always local and approximate.

At 5:32 p.m. on Jan. 31, Guthrie went to his family’s home for game night, authorities said. At 9:48 p.m., when her family dropped her off at her home, the garage door opened. Garage doors closed at 9:50 p.m.

At 1:47 a.m. on February 1, authorities announced that the doorbell camera in front of Guthrie’s home was disconnected. At 2:12 a.m., the smart home’s software detected a person on the camera, but video wasn’t available on Guthrie’s subscription plan.

At 2:28 a.m., Guthrie’s pacemaker app shows it has been disconnected from his phone. Family members arrived to check on her at 11:56 a.m. and called 911 at 12:03 to report her missing. A police car arrived at 12:15 p.m.

When asked if the doorbell camera was kept by police, Nanos said, “We don’t have it. We couldn’t find it,” suggesting it may have been taken from the scene.

Nanos said it tried working with technology companies to recover the video, but was unsuccessful.

“We know that the technology company has run out of ways to restore that video,” he said.

“At this point, we believe Nancy is still out there,” Nanos said at the beginning of the news conference, adding that several nearby police departments and FBI agents are providing services. “We want to bring her home. Our department, the sheriff’s department… is working around the clock.”

Complete timeline of Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance

  • January 31st 5:32pm Guthrie traveled to his family’s home for the night of the game.
  • January 31st 9:48pm When her family dropped her off at home, the garage door opened.
  • January 31st 9:50pm The garage door is closed.
  • February 1st 1:47am The doorbell camera in front of Guthrie’s home was disconnected.
  • February 1st 2:12am The smart home software has detected a person on the camera, but video is not available.
  • February 1st 2:28am Guthrie’s pacemaker app shows it has been disconnected from her phone.
  • February 1st 11:56am Her family is checking on her.
  • February 1st 12:03pm Her family called 9-1-1 to report her missing.
  • February 1st 12:15pm A police car arrives.

Do Pop-Tart, SunnyD Peeps flavors taste good? Check out our taste test.

Peeps, America’s best-known maker of seasonal marshmallow candies, has added some quirky new flavors ahead of Easter Sunday.

Inspired by two breakfast staples, Peeps announced on Tuesday, January 13 that Pop-Tarts Frosted Strawberry Flavored Marshmallow Chic and Sunny D Flavored Marshmallow Chic will be available at retailers nationwide. The company said Marshmallow Chick in Chili Lime Mango flavor is also available now for those looking for a “sweet and tangy kick.”

Pop-Tarts’ Frosted Strawberry, Sunny D, and Chili Lime Mango Peeps piqued our interest here at USA TODAY, along with a lineup of other flavors that have become popular with decidedly non-marshmallow treats like Dr. Pepper and Mike N’ Ike’s. I took the opportunity to try it out.

Check out the taste test at the beginning of this story.

Verdict: Flavors surprisingly true to their quirky inspiration

The surprising triumph of these quirky Peeps additions is their ability to capture the essence of the treats they inspire. The flavor of Frosted Strawberry Pop-Tarts reminds me of the distinct taste of frosting that I remember from those bleary-eyed school mornings of the early ’10s. Sunny D tasted, well, like Sunny D. It is a characteristically artificial citrus fruit that cannot simply be passed off as “orange” or “fruit juice.”

Perhaps to the dismay of my fellow sweet and spicy lovers, Chili Lime Mango has no pungency, but somehow has a distinct chili flavor. The little marshmallow chick managed to make room for all three main flavors listed on the package. However, although the “lime” component was included in the flavor, it was not able to block out the sugar-like sweetness with stimulation and flavor.

If you’re looking for something other than sweet (really sweet), the new flavors may not be for you, but so are Peeps in general. Don’t eat too many cups of coffee and get full from just coffee like I did.

Peeps Flavors, Products Available for Easter 2026

The new flavors we tried here at USA TODAY aren’t the only unique Peeps products rocking your Easter basket this year. Some products, such as Tropical Punch-flavored bunnies, are only available at select retailers such as Dollar Tree, while more than a dozen other candies, such as cotton candy-flavored Marshmallow Chicks and Giant Bunny Pops, are available at retailers nationwide.

Peeps SunnyD (Target), Peeps Chili Lime Mango (Kroger), Peeps Easter Variety 10-Pack (Sam’s Club), and Peeps Egg Hunt Individually Wrapped Mini Marshmallow Chick (Walmart) are available only at the retailers listed.

New York City Mayor Mamdani backs centrist Governor Kathy Hochul

0

In many ways, the two are opposite sides of the Democratic Party’s big tent. But Hochul and Mamdani need each other.

play

NEW YORK – New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani has endorsed fellow Democrat Kathy Hochul’s re-election as governor.

A few months ago, Hochul, a moderate from Buffalo, endorsed Mamdani in the 2025 mayoral race. Now Mamdani, the democratic socialist who led the country’s largest city in a shock victory, has returned the favor by calling on Big Apple voters to elect Hochul in November.

“New Yorkers deserve a leader who believes in change,” Mamdani, a former state lawmaker, wrote in a Feb. 5 essay in The Nation. “Leaders who understand that hope is inspired by vision and sustained by change. Governor Kathy Hochul has my support because she chooses to govern in that spirit. And in this moment, that choice matters.”

In many ways, the two are opposite sides of the Democratic Party’s big tent. But this support is key for Mr. Hochul to gain support from Mr. Mamdani’s left-wing base of the Democratic Party. Meanwhile, Mamdani will need Hochul to deliver on some of his far-reaching campaign promises, including universal child care and free express buses.

In his essay, Mamdani acknowledged significant political differences with the governor. But Mamdani pointed to a recent agreement with Hochul to expand child care to New Yorkers. He said the agreement, which leverages state funding to expand the city’s child care program, shows the two sides can work together.

“We’re providing child care to every family in New York, but we’re just getting started,” Hochul said in an X post. “We look forward to our continued partnership to make New York City more affordable, invest in public safety, and fight back against Trump.”

Mamdani’s support is important even in Democratic-leaning states. Mr. Hochul will need significant turnout in the five boroughs, which are much more blue than the Republican-leaning areas of upstate New York and Long Island. The progressive and left-wing wing of the Democratic Party, especially in New York City, has at times embraced Hochul for her moderate political stance and unwillingness to tax the city’s high earners.

Hochul’s 2022 election was a surprisingly narrow victory over Lee Zeldin, a Long Island Republican who currently heads President Donald Trump’s Environmental Protection Agency.

Hochul is being opposed in the primary by current lieutenant governor Antonio Delgado from the left. Mr. Delgado’s campaign did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

Delgado’s running mate for lieutenant governor, India Walton, a Democratic Socialist from Buffalo, called supporting Mamdani a “bad deal” even with good intentions.

“We have no plans to tax the wealthy with one-time childcare commitments drawn from the reserve, and donors come first. We should tax the super-rich and corporations and fund universal childcare in the budget. It’s not enough money to sit on your couch,” Walton told X.

In addition to his primary challenge, Hochul also faces a general election race against Republican Bruce Blakeman, executive chairman of suburban Nassau County on Long Island.

“Everyone knows that Kathy Hochul entered into a secret agreement with Zoran Mamdani to gain sudden support,” Blakeman said in a statement. “Was it about raising taxes to fill a budget gap? Was it about closing prisons and putting criminals back on the streets? Was it about threatening private property and promoting the government’s big socialist agenda of putting the government in control of our families? Whatever the deal, hard-working men and women are going to pay the price.”

The day before, Mr. Hochul announced the selection of former New York City Council President Adrian Adams as Mr. Delgado’s successor as lieutenant governor. Mr. Adams is a moderate Democrat who ran for mayor of New York before supporting Mr. Mamdani in the general election.

Hochul’s announcement of Adams shocked some New York Democrats. On February 5, the state’s largest Democratic party, the Brooklyn Democratic Party, announced it was withdrawing its support for Hochul — just one day after endorsing her.

Bad Bunny says he doesn’t even need to learn Spanish for the Super Bowl

Bad Bunny sat with Apple Music hosts Zane Lowe and Ebro Darden at the Super Bowl LX Halftime Show press conference on February 5th.

The global superstar, whose full name is Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, provided rare insight into the cultural moment and creative vision behind one of the most anticipated and discussed halftime performances in NFL history.

Bad Bunny took to the stage wearing an all-charcoal suit with a faux fur coat, beanie hat and oversized sunglasses, to loud cheers of “Benito!” Lowe asked him, “How are you feeling now?”

“To be honest, I don’t know how I feel. There’s a lot going on,” he said. Switching between English and Spanish, Bad Bunny said he feels happy and is taking each day to the next. On February 4th, I couldn’t sleep because I kept thinking about the performance. That’s 13 minutes of him “doing what he loves.”

He continued, “I’m more excited to think about all my family and friends than I am to think about myself.”

Bad Bunny says you don’t need to know Spanish to dance to his music

To those who said they needed to learn Spanish, the language in which he sings, to understand his performances, he replied: “It would be easy, people would just have to think about dance. They don’t even have to learn Spanish. They’d better learn dance. There’s no dance better than dance that comes from the heart.”

When the conversation turned to preparation and mindset, Bad Bunny summed up his goals succinctly: “I just want people to have fun.”

He joked that he was eating a Smashburger in preparation for his performance and was “thinking about it at 4 a.m.” He longs for time to play dominoes again. “It’s killing me not to play.”

What fans are curious about is what the content will be like and whether there will be any surprises or guests.

“You know that’s not something I’m going to tell you? I don’t know why you would ask that,” he joked. “Of course, we’ll have a lot of guests, whether it’s family and friends or the Latinx community from around the world.”

Charlie Puth, Brandi Carlyle and Coco Jones discuss their pregame performance

Before Bad Bunny’s appearance, Lowe and Ebro spoke with Charlie Puth (who sings “The Star-Spangled Banner”), Coco Jones (who sings “Lift Every Voice”) and Brandi Carlile (who sings “America the Beautiful”).

Puth has been “rehearsing for a month” and has been showering most of the time. He admits that the song is “one of the most difficult songs to sing”.

For Jones, who likes to eat Lay’s chips before every performance because Whitney Houston said it was good for her voice, the experience is “like the bee’s knees. It’s one of the most-watched events of all time, right? So it’s hard to compete. Maybe my wedding will be there.”

And Carlisle, a Seattle Seahawks fan, says the song is “more of a prayer than a post. It’s a song about a country, a beautiful country that rises and falls in terms of hope, and it’s a work in progress.”

Bad Bunny talks about how he’s preparing for the Super Bowl halftime show

Bad Bunny talks about preparing for the Super Bowl, from workouts to mindset to staying true to yourself.

Inside Apple Music’s playbook for the Super Bowl 60 halftime show

Apple Music executives exclusively told USA TODAY that the 2026 halftime campaign is rooted in Bad Bunny’s 10 words that defined the overall creative direction: “This isn’t my halftime show. This is everyone’s halftime show.”

This quote became the throughline of a show built to make a global impression. The message also contrasted with earlier online criticism that questioned whether Spanish-speaking performers should be leading America’s biggest entertainment stage.

Apple Music’s relationship with Bad Bunny began in 2016, when the streaming app first featured the Puerto Rican artist on its playlists. Three years later, Lowe interviewed him on a boat in San Juan Harbor and left convinced of his star power.

Since then, Bad Bunny has become one of the most streamed musicians in the world, setting touring and streaming records while fusing reggaeton, trap, pop and alternative styles.

On February 1, Debí Tirar Más Fotos became the first Spanish-language album to win the Grammy Award for Album of the Year.

A secret halftime show

Jay-Z’s company Roc Nation will select the halftime performers, but Apple Music will build the global campaign. Executives say secrecy is so strict that even senior executives don’t know who will be performing until close to the announcement.

In preparation, Apple Music has assembled a cross-functional “tiger team” to create mood boards and shortlists, ready to take action the moment news is announced. The company will then roll out playlists, archival interviews, artist tributes, and global videos to 175 countries.

Last year’s Kendrick Lamar halftime show drew more than 130 million viewers, making it the most-watched halftime show in Super Bowl history. Apple is particularly keen to expand its audience overseas, reflecting the NFL’s recent push for growth in South America.

After this year’s trailer was released, streams for “BAILE INoLVIDABLE” jumped 54 percent in the U.S. and 36 percent worldwide.

We tested Consumer Reports’ Best Midsize Cars. The breakdown is as follows:

Does Consumer Reports’ claim hold up?

play

  • Consumer Reports named the Toyota Camry the Best Midsize Car of 2026.
  • Modern midsize cars are often required to balance fuel efficiency, practicality, and engaging performance.

Small SUVs may be the most popular vehicles in America, but there are still plenty of sedans that account for thousands of new car sales. The mid-size car segment is competitive with strong manufacturers from brands such as Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, and Kia.

Consumer Reports has released its 2026 Best Car of the Year list, ranking the Toyota Camry the best midsize car of the year. USA TODAY Cars tested the latest Camry to see if it’s as good on the road as it looks on paper.

Here’s what a week of testing revealed about this midsize car’s value, quality, and performance.

Why the Toyota Camry is the best midsize car for 2026

According to a recent sales report, Toyota sold 316,185 Camrys in 2025. It’s popular among consumers because of its affordable starting price, efficient hybrid powertrain, and great standard features for the price.

The standard hybrid midsize car uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors to produce a good 225 horsepower for its size. It handles well and offers quick acceleration that will keep drivers interested. The Hybrid gets 53 miles per gallon in the city and 50 miles per gallon on the highway. With a 13.0-gallon gas tank, this sedan can travel over 1,069 miles on a single tank (in its most efficient configuration).

In addition to engaging driving dynamics and excellent fuel economy, the new Camry also offers sharp, modern exterior styling. Although it looks sporty, it has enough cabin and cargo space (15.1 cubic feet) to be considered practical for a small family.

The 2026 Toyota Camry ticks all the boxes for thousands of American drivers, but it’s not the only popular model in this segment.

What is Toyota Camry’s biggest rival?

One of the 2026 Camry’s biggest competitors is the Honda Accord Hybrid. Korean automaker Hyundai’s Sonata Hybrid also boasts specs that make it a viable and attractive Camry alternative.

toyota camry honda accord hybrid hyundai sonata hybrid
starting price $29,100 $33,795 $29,200
horsepower 225 204 192
MPG (miles per gallon) 51 48 51

Toyota’s midsize hybrid is the most affordable and most powerful of the three models listed above. The Accord Hybrid and Sonata Hybrid are both attractive, but the Camry outperforms both models.

What should you look for in a mid-size car?

The mid-size car segment has evolved in recent years. Many of today’s most popular midsize cars have standard hybrids like the Camry or hybrid trims like the Honda Accord and Hyundai Sonata. Competitive modern midsize cars have good fuel economy, enough power to provide driving fun, and a cabin suitable for passenger comfort.

The main reason for choosing a mid-size car over a compact model is practicality. Automakers have realized that by adding hybrid powertrains, midsize models can also be efficient and fun to drive.

If you’re looking for a midsize car, look for models with competitive prices, enough back seat and trunk space to suit your lifestyle, and standard features that make driving safer and more convenient.

Bill Gates’ STI, extramarital affair allegations emerge amid controversy mediated by Epstein

0

The Microsoft co-founder was about to part ways with Boris Nikolic in 2013.

play

Newly released documents reveal that Jeffrey Epstein tried to mediate a feud between Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and billionaire adviser Boris Nikolic in 2013.

In response to the scandal, Mr. Epstein wrote an email to himself specifically alleging that Mr. Gates and his aides had abused him, even though they had a very close friendship, and that he had once helped procure antibiotics to treat a sexually transmitted disease he contracted from a “Russian girl.”

In the messages, it is unclear whether Mr. Epstein is writing on his own behalf or whether he is drafting something in the voice of Mr. Nikolic, a doctor and investor close to Mr. Epstein. Emails reviewed by USA TODAY show that Mr. Epstein acted as an intermediary between Mr. Nikolic, who was an adviser to Mr. Gates, and a man named Larry Cohen, who is also the name of the head of an organization called Gates Ventures.

The emails show that Gates’ relationship with Epstein, then a convicted sex offender, went beyond philanthropy. These came to light after previous releases from the Epstein Foundation, which included technology entrepreneurs. Previously released documents from Epstein’s files show Gates in photos with women with his face obscured, photos with Epstein’s pilots and photos with former Prince Andrew taken years before he was stripped of his official duties and royal titles.

Bridget Arnold, a spokeswoman for Gates, said the information contained in the latest email was “completely irrational and completely false” created by a “proven disgruntled liar.” A spokesperson said Bill Gates denied any wrongdoing related to Epstein or any “horrendous activities” in which he was involved.

“The only thing these documents show is Mr. Epstein’s dissatisfaction with not having an ongoing relationship with Mr. Gates and the extent to which he entraps and slanders him,” a spokesperson for Mr. Gates said.

Inside Gates’ dealings with Epstein and Nikolic

Gates was mentioned in messages from at least 2010 to 2019, according to a review by USA TODAY. From 2011 to 2014, Mr. Gates sent emails directly to Mr. Epstein, often with either copying Mr. Cohen or Mr. Nikolic. In other emails, Gates is only mentioned to attend potential meetings and is not copied.

Epstein’s relationship with Nikolic dates back to at least January 2010. Previously released emails showed the two discussing a meeting in Switzerland, where Nikolic said he met some of Epstein’s friends, including President Bill Clinton and Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, now known as King Charles’ brother.

“I was just flirting with a sexy 22-year-old blonde, blue-eyed Mexican woman,” Nikolic wrote. “It turned out that she was with her husband. We didn’t have a chance to check on him. But as we concluded, anything good is rented ;)”.

Nikolic did not respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment.

It’s unclear how Mr. Nikolic became involved in Mr. Gates’ finances, but in a February 2011 email, Mr. Epstein told Mr. Nikolic that he should have a more formal title in his relationship with Mr. Gates. He then proposes ideas such as “Bill Gates Investments”, “Bill Gates Investments”, and the president of “Bill Gates Holdings”.

In June 2013, Nikolic invites Gates to Crazy Horse, a famous burlesque cabaret theater in Paris. Gates replied, “I’m too tired to do this, and I don’t want to take any risks. I would have done it when I was younger, but I guess I’ll have to stop this time!”

As shown in a July 1, 2013 email, Gates wrote to Nikolic: “We should meet on Wednesday to discuss your work. You need a transfer. I’m very sorry, but I don’t see a way around it. With some planning, we can ensure a smooth and positive transfer.”

Nikolic responded with an emotional plea on July 2, 2013: “I haven’t slept or eaten normally for a while. And even though I can’t stop thinking that I didn’t do anything wrong, it seems like I’ll have to pay for it for the rest of my life. I have been and will always be a loyal friend and employee, and I will do anything for you.”

On July 11, 2013, Gates sent an email to Epstein stating that Cohen was authorized to speak with Epstein about Nikolic’s employment.

Mr. Cohen and Mr. Nikolic exchanged emails to finalize the deal, and Mr. Epstein said he was involved but did not negotiate on Mr. Nikolic’s behalf. “To be clear, I am not acting in any capacity other than as a friend of Boris and Bill.”

A few days later, on July 18, 2013, Epstein wrote two emails to himself, in one of which he referred to himself as “Boris.” The background appears to be an employment dispute between Mr. Gates and Mr. Nikolic, which also includes allegations that Mr. Gates is having an affair and that Mr. Nikolic is caught in the middle of Mr. Gates’ marital dispute.

“You have decided to fire me from your job, have your publicist Larry tell you that I have acted morally inappropriately, and in order to maintain the reputation you have worked so hard to earn, you have asked me to be the lead in the cover-up,” Epstein wrote in one of the emails.

Email claims ‘Russian woman’, extramarital affair, ‘morally inappropriate’ and ‘ethically unsound’

In a second email dated July 18, 2013, Epstein, presumably writing as Nikolic, said he was resigning from BG3, a think tank founded by Gates that was later renamed Gates Ventures, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

“For the past few weeks, I have been involved in a serious marital dispute between Melinda and Bill,” Epstein wrote. “I have the utmost respect for my friend of seven years, and I wish them both well.

“In my role as his right-hand man, I was repeatedly asked (sic) to wrongfully acquiesce in participating in a variety of matters that, in retrospect, ranged from the morally inappropriate to the ethically unsound, and to do other things that bordered on illegality or could cross the line.”

Those missions included obtaining drugs so Gates could deal with the consequences of having sex with a Russian woman, “facilitating illegal trysts with married women,” and being asked to provide Adderall for a bridge tournament, according to the email.

On August 1, 2013, Epstein sent an email to Cohen and Gates identifying matters that should be addressed in a potential agreement. Mr Epstein asked for “broader permissions” on the issues at hand beyond “the hiring of Boris”.

The email then asks whether Bill and Melinda French Gates will sign it and whether the one-year severance agreement is representative of the couple’s position. “If Melinda wants a divorce, how will Boris protect himself?” Epstein added.

Melinda French Gates, who divorced Gates after eight years, told National Public Radio in a podcast interview published on February 3 that the revelations about her ex-husband caused her “incredible sadness,” but said it was her responsibility to answer the questions Epstein’s files raise.

Gates said in an interview with an Australian television network on February 4 that he met Epstein in 2011 and remained in touch for about three years. He said the focus was always on Mr. Epstein’s connections to wealthy clients who could support his global philanthropy.

“It appears that Jeffrey wrote the email to himself,” Gates said. “That email was never sent. That email was false. So I don’t know what he was thinking. Was he trying to attack me in some way? But then I remembered, I regret every minute I spent with him. And I apologize for doing that.”

Nikolic and Gates try to repair their relationship

Additional emails indicate that Mr. Gates and Mr. Nikolic continue to try to resolve their employment dispute. Mr. Gates continued to email Mr. Epstein directly until December 2014, and Mr. Cohen continued to correspond with Mr. Epstein until 2019, months after the Miami Herald published an explosive investigation into Mr. Epstein.

“Larry Cohen was asked to negotiate and manage the separation agreement with Mr. Nikolic and was clearly dissatisfied with Mr. Epstein’s efforts to become more broadly and directly involved,” Gates Ventures spokesman Arnold said in a statement. “Epstein’s hostility toward Cohen is clear in the documents, and Epstein viewed Cohen as an impediment to Epstein’s access to Gates. After his separation from Nikolic, Epstein’s continued communications to Cohen were one-sided and unrequited.”

On August 10, 2013, Epstein emailed Gates to check on his dispute with Nikolic and invited Gates to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and to a dinner in New York in September. Mr. Epstein added, “Of course, Melinda is welcome to come, if you wish.” (Epstein owns a property called Zorro Ranch an hour away from Santa Fe, as well as properties in New York City, where the women allege he was abused.)

Gates responded the same day, saying, “Thank you for your help.” “I don’t know how to say it too strongly. I think we’re on a good track right now.”

Mr. Gates and Mr. Epstein continued to exchange several emails regarding Mr. Nikolic’s agreement through August 2013, which seemed to suggest that mediation between the Microsoft co-founder and Mr. Nikolic had not worked.

Gates wrote to Epstein on August 27, 2013, “It would be too bad if Boris decided that he had changed his mind about what we agreed to when you visited our office.” As discussed, if someone asks for more, there is no end to it. Boris can publish whatever he wants at that point, and I will explain to the appropriate people what was done to me and by whom.”

Cohen’s LinkedIn profile still lists him as the CEO of Gates Ventures, and he continued to email Epstein for years after the dispute. USA TODAY reached out to Cohen via Gates Ventures for comment via email.

The group pointed to a 2019 statement from Gates’ spokesperson Arnold: “Although Epstein actively pursued Gates, Gates had no business partnership or personal friendship with Epstein. Gates never interacted with Epstein or attended any parties with him. It has become clear that Epstein misrepresented the nature of his meeting with Gates and simultaneously attempted to go behind the scenes without Gates’ knowledge.”

In January 2018, Mr. Epstein contacted Mr. Cohen to schedule a meeting between Mr. Gates and Terje Rod Larsen, then director of the International Peace Research Institute, in Davos, Switzerland.

Cohen said he did not know if the two were meeting at the time, but was looking into whether they had time to meet. (Rod Larsen resigned from the institute in 2020 due to his relationship with Epstein.)

On January 10, 2019, Cohen and Epstein exchanged emails to arrange a time for a conversation.

Six months later, on July 8, 2019, federal prosecutors indicted Epstein on sex trafficking charges. A month later he was found dead in his prison cell.

Minute Maid discontinues frozen orange juice and lemonade

Minute Maid has developed a series of products that helped get the company started 80 years ago.

Coca-Cola, which owns Minute Maid, confirmed in a statement to USA TODAY that it will stop selling frozen products such as orange juice and lemonade.

“In response to changing consumer tastes, we will discontinue sales of frozen products and withdraw from the frozen can category,” the company said in a statement. “As the juice category continues to grow strongly, we are focused on products that better match consumer demand.”

These products will be discontinued in the first quarter of 2026. Coca-Cola says it will be available in stores while supplies last.

According to Coca-Cola, Minute Maid, then known as Vacuum Foods Corporation, shipped its first frozen concentrated orange juice in 1946. This product has long been a favorite of some shoppers because of its long shelf life and lower price compared to fresh orange juice.

Which frozen Minute Maid products will be discontinued?

The Coca-Cola Company has announced that it will discontinue all frozen Minute Maid products. According to the company’s website, the following products are sold as frozen concentrated fruit juices.

  • original orange juice
  • orange juice without pulp
  • rustic orange juice
  • lemonade
  • limeade
  • pink lemonade
  • raspberry lemonade

Minute Maid has been selling frozen juices for 80 years.

According to Coca-Cola, Minute Maid started with frozen juice.

(In 1945, the company, then known as Florida Foods Corporation, won a contract to sell powdered orange juice to the U.S. military. However, when that deal fell through, the following year it pivoted to producing frozen concentrated orange juice instead.

This frozen juice product was named “Minute Maid” for its convenience. Eventually, the company changed its name to Minute Maid Corporation. The company was acquired by the Coca-Cola Company in 1960, and in 1973 the brand introduced ready-to-drink orange juice sold in paper cartons.

Does Melania Trump live in the White House? Here’s what we know

0

  • A documentary about Melania Trump offers a glimpse into her life at Mar-a-Lago.
  • The former first lady describes her Florida mansion as a “refuge from the outside world.”
  • The film includes a meeting at Mar-a-Lago where the Trumps discussed security for the inauguration.

First lady Melania Trump’s documentary showed a rare glimpse of her at home: all three of them.

In fact, Mar-a-Lago received special treatment in the movie. The film’s opening scene shows President Trump’s high heels clicking into a waiting car as he moves over the gentle waves of the ocean, a yellow-striped umbrella, and the Cuban roof tiles of his mansion before leaving the mansion for New York.

After meeting with fashion and event designers, she returns to Florida to discuss efforts to help children with her husband and Queen Rania of Jordan.

Trump appeared a little less as the first lady, and the film didn’t give much insight into where she spends most of her time.

But she shared a little more detail about her Florida home, also known as the “Winter White House.” Here’s how Mar-a-Lago appears in the movie.

Melania Trump calls Mar-a-Lago a ‘refuge from the outside world’

The first lady rarely appears in the real world and, in contrast to her husband, is regularly photographed jet-setting between her mansions in Washington, D.C., and Palm Beach, Florida. This makes it difficult to keep track of where she spends most of her time and what she considers home.

She called Mar-a-Lago “a haven from the outside world.” She recalled that her elusive son Barron Trump grew up there taking swimming lessons, golf lessons and tennis lessons.

But she didn’t call New York City or Washington, D.C.’s Mar-a-Lago or Trump Tower home. Instead, she said, “I have this idea of home inside of me,” and that “Mar-a-Lago is more than home.”

“Are you safe?” Meeting held inside a trailer at Mar-a-Lago

One of the president’s most profound interactions in the film took place at Mar-a-Lago, where the two met about security and logistics for Inauguration Day. The then-president-elect wondered aloud why the College Football Playoff national championship game was broadcast on Inauguration Day.

“We have to compete for a championship? How did that happen?” Trump said, adding, “I think they did it on purpose.”

The first lady, who attended the meeting, also asked if she was safe, a moment that was also featured in the movie’s trailer. When discussing the parade route, she alluded to what happened the previous year, apparently related to the attempt on Donald Trump’s life.

Barron Trump also has his first on-camera moment in the movie as his family leaves Mar-a-Lago on their way to the inauguration.

Rotating tires can be expensive. Here’s what you need to know:

0

Why tire rotation is important and how often should you rotate your tires?

play

  • Experts recommend replacing tires every 4,000 to 8,000 miles.

While most drivers tend to keep up with regular maintenance, there are some important steps you may overlook. Oil changes are inevitable, and most modern cars will warn drivers when their oil is running low. However, in cases such as tire rotation, the vehicle does not notify you, so you have to be aware of it yourself.

Tire rotations should be done as often as oil changes. Not only will it extend the life of your tires, but it will also extend the life of your suspension. We’ll explain why you need to rotate your tires and how often you should rotate them.

What is tire rotation?

When you rotate your car’s tires, you remove and replace each wheel. For an average car, the front tires move backwards and the rear tires move forwards. For vehicles with wide rear tires, the left and right rear tires are swapped, and the left and right front tires are swapped.

What are the benefits of tire rotation?

One of the most important benefits of regularly rotating your tires is that they wear more evenly. If it’s not rotating properly, it will wear unevenly and deteriorate faster than normal. Rotating your tires frequently also reduces stress on your car’s suspension. When a car runs on an even tread, it has better balance and less wear on key suspension components.

How often should I replace my tires?

According to manufacturer Nokian Tires, it’s best to replace your tires every 4,000 to 8,000 miles. Some dealerships offer tire rotations at the same appointment as an oil change for an additional fee. If it’s been a while since your last rotation, get your rotation as soon as possible.

Where can I get my tires rotated?

Most areas have several locations that offer tire rotations. The most common is car dealerships. Even if it’s a little expensive, at least they know what they’re doing. You can also get rotations at most shops that sell and install tires. Other auto repair shops may also perform tire rotations for you.

Average cost of tire rotation

According to Kelly Blue Book, the average cost of a rotation is $60 to $72. Prices vary depending on the store type and car model. If you are planning a rotation that involves tire balancing, expect to pay more than $100. This balancing service corrects the weight distribution of the tires and reduces vibrations from the road surface while driving.

Most manufacturers expect the average tire to reach 50,000 miles, but many tires don’t get there. Consistent rotation can extend the life of your tires, so you can drive comfortably and safely until you need new tires.

White House: President Trump has no plans to send ICE to polling places

play

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump is not discussing plans to send Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to polling places during the 2026 midterm elections, rejecting a strategy proposed by former Trump strategist Steve Bannon, the White House announced.

“I have never heard the president think that,” White House press secretary Caroline Levitt said in a Feb. 5 briefing with reporters.

“We cannot guarantee that ICE agents will not be around polling places in November,” she added. “All I can say is that I have not heard the president discuss any formal plan to have ICE outside of polling places.”

Bannon, who was a key architect of MAGA and a senior adviser to President Trump during his first term, told his followers on the Feb. 3 episode of the podcast “War Room” that “we’re going to have ICE surround the vote in November.”

“We’re not going to sit here and allow them to steal our country again,” Bannon said, pushing baseless claims similar to those made by President Trump that the 2024 election was rigged for Joe Biden. “And you can whine and cry and throw toys out of the pram all you want, but we will never again allow an election to be stolen.”

President Trump this week called on Republicans to “nationalize” the voting process and “take over” elections in about 15 states that don’t have fair elections. The president accused Democrats of bringing immigrants into the United States to vote illegally, a frequent attack among Trump and his supporters that is not supported by evidence. Only U.S. citizens can vote in federal and state elections.

“If they can’t do it in good faith and do it properly and in a timely manner, then something else has to happen,” Trump later said at Fenn. 4 NBC News interview.

Democrats have expressed alarm at President Trump’s suggestion that the federal government take control of elections held by states under the Constitution.

But Levitt said Trump’s comments were nothing more than urging lawmakers to pass the Republican-backed Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility Act (SAVE Act), which would require all Americans to show citizenship and identification to vote in federal elections.

“These are very common-sense policies and proposals,” Levitt said. “That’s what the president is talking about.”

Director Kimmel speaks out about box office fraud, Director Colbert casts actress in ‘Melania’

  • A new documentary about Melania Trump received critical reviews but did well at the box office.
  • The film was directed by Brett Ratner, his first major project since facing sexual harassment allegations in 2017.
  • Late night hosts including Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel and Seth Meyers have mocked the documentary.

First Lady Melania Trump’s documentary “Melania” received critical acclaim, even though it exceeded expectations at the box office. Late-night television is now on the rise.

Melania, which opens in theaters on January 30, follows President Trump’s journey back to the White House in early 2025. Little is revealed about her, relying heavily on picturesque shots and an upbeat soundtrack. To add to the controversy surrounding the film, it was directed by Rush Hour director Brett Ratner, his first major feature since he was accused of sexual harassment in 2017.

A film critic for Variety called the documentary “state-sanctioned propaganda by Communist China in the 1960s.” The Atlantic reported, “Mr. Ratner seems desperate to find action, but nothing.” Still, the film grossed an estimated $7 million in its opening weekend.

But this week, late-night TV hosts were having fun with it. Here’s what they had to say:

Who played Melania Trump on Stephen Colbert?

On “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” the host brought up behind-the-scenes stories that poked fun at President Trump’s behavior. At the Feb. 4 show, actress Laura Benanti appeared as the first lady, accentuated by her signature honey waves and exaggerated sculptural expressions.

Colbert pressed the actress about the content of the film, alluding to the first lady’s comment that it was more of an art piece than a documentary.

“I’ve got about $28 million in my pocket, cha-chingaaah!” Benanti says in character. “Like me, it’s a very creepy mystery.”

In one of the film’s more personal scenes, Ratner and Trump are in a car together, where she tells him that her favorite song is Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean,” and they sing along.

Colbert asks Benanti why it’s his favorite.

“Let’s just say that every time I look at Eric and think, ‘That’s not my son,’ it brings a smile to my face,” she said before moonwalking away from the camera.

Jimmy Kimmel alludes to box office fraud

During Jimmy Kimmel’s opening monologue on February 4, he warned about President Donald Trump’s rhetoric regarding the upcoming election.

“Speaking of fraudulent results, the documentary ‘Melania’ is said to have exceeded box office expectations,” Kimmel said. The film’s box office gross of $7 million was the best start for a documentary, excluding concert films, in more than a decade, according to the New York Times. However, that still fell far short of the $40 million paid by Amazon MGM Studios, with an additional $35 million reportedly spent on marketing.

“Many people, myself included, were wondering how this movie was able to sell $7 million worth of tickets last weekend, when nearly every theater seemed empty before its release,” Kimmel said.

He noted that in 2019, the Republican National Committee paid nearly $100,000 in “donor memorabilia” for Donald Trump Jr.’s book “Triggered,” which topped the New York Times bestseller list, according to the newspaper.

Kimmel’s monologue on “Melania” came on the same day that the Washington Post reported major layoffs.

“Jeff Bezos, who paid for the garbage, just fired hundreds of journalists at the Washington Post,” Kimmel said. “I think he spent his entire budget on Melania. Well done, Jeff.”

Seth Meyers: “The film with the least animation”

On “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” the host took a few swipes at the documentary in the days leading up to its release.

“As a feature film with little animation, it’s already in some awards buzz,” he said in a monologue.

He also mocked the president after a private screening of the film at the White House.

“Hey, they’re actually testing his arousal abilities,” he said. “‘Doctor, would you like to sit in the dark and watch a movie about your wife? Doctor? He’s already gone out.”

Nearly 200,000 tour steamers have been recalled over concerns they could cause severe burns.

Approximately 119,000 PurSteam Mighty Lil Steamers and 75,400 PurSteam Elite Travel Steamers were recalled on February 5, according to a notice posted on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s (CSPC) website.

The agency said in a recall notice that the steamer can squirt boiling water from the steam nozzle when in use, posing a serious burn risk to consumers.

Between December 2020 and 2024, the company received 80 reports of boiling water gushing from the PurSteam Elite Travel Steamer model PS-510, including 14 reports of burns. During the same period, there were 392 reports of boiling water coming out of the PurSteam Mighty Lil Steamer Model PS-550, including 40 reports of burns.

Here’s what you need to know about the recalled travel steamer.

Which travel steamers have been recalled?

Affected models are PurSteam Elite Travel Steamers and PurSteam Mighty Lil Steamers purchased after December 2020 or with one of the following date codes: 2310, 2308, 2305, 2304, 2303, 2212, 2211, 2210, 2203, 2112, 2111, 2110, 0221, 1019, and 4619.

The PurSteam Elite Travel Steamer is white in color and has a triangular opening for the steam vent. The “PurSteam” logo is printed below the corrugated water storage window, and “Model: PS-510” is printed on the bottom of the product.

‘Every hour counts’ judge orders Justice Department to protect Epstein survivor IDs

0

A federal judge has given the Justice Department until February 5th to show how it is redacting all information about Jeffrey Epstein that it accidentally released.

play

WASHINGTON – A federal judge has given the Justice Department until February 5 to explain how much “victim identifying information” it failed to redact from the recently released Epstein files, after the late disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein’s accusers claimed they received death threats as a result.

U.S. District Judge Paul Engelmayer also directed the Justice Department to consider whether “all such materials” among the 3.5 million Epstein-related emails, photos, videos and other data in the investigative files released by the Justice Department on January 30 were subsequently blacked out.

Mr. Engelmayer’s Feb. 3 order was issued in response to a legal complaint filed by two attorneys representing Epstein’s survivors “regarding an emergency development requiring immediate judicial intervention,” including the immediate deletion of the Justice Department website that houses Epstein’s files until all information identifying his accusers is removed.

Attorneys Bradley Edwards and Brittany Henderson, who represent dozens of Epstein accusers, also asked the court to appoint an independent special master to oversee the redaction and republication of the Justice Department files, and to leave open the possibility of judicial sanctions “including contempt and monetary relief.”

“For Jeffrey Epstein’s victims, every moment counts. The harm is ongoing and irreversible,” the lawyers wrote in a detailed seven-page filing. “This court is the last line of defense for victims promised protection but instead exposed. Judicial intervention is not only appropriate, it is essential.”

In announcing the new release on January 30, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said images of all women in the file (except for Epstein’s convicted associate Ghislaine Maxwell) would be redacted to ensure their personal information would not be made public.

But Edwards and Henderson said that in the first 48 hours after the files were made public on January 30, they reported “thousands of redaction failures to the Justice Department on behalf of nearly 100 survivors whose lives were forever changed by the Justice Department’s latest disclosure.”

In addition to receiving death threats, some of Epstein’s foreign accusers, who wished to remain anonymous, had to resist media reports that would reveal their identities or photos, lawyers said.

Other victims have come forward with similar accusations about how the Justice Department kept secret the identities of Epstein’s potential accomplices while releasing their own identities despite promises not to do so.

“It is hard to imagine a degree of institutional incompetence sufficient to explain the scale, consistency, and persistence of the failures that occurred,” Edwards and Henderson wrote, “especially when the only mandate ordered by the court and repeatedly emphasized by the Department of Justice was simply to redact the names of known victims before publication.”

All the Justice Department had to do, he told Engelmayer, was to enter each victim’s name into a unique search function and edit the files before making them public in the online Epstein Library database.

“Had the Department of Justice done so, the harm could have been avoided,” they said.

Instead, on January 30, the Justice Department “committed what appears to be the most egregious violation of victim privacy in a single day in U.S. history,” Edwards and Henderson wrote.

The Department of Justice admits failure. Survivors say that’s not enough.

A department spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment from USA TODAY on Feb. 5 about whether the Justice Department would meet the judge’s deadline.

In a statement to USA TODAY, the Justice Department said it “takes victim protection very seriously and redacted the names of thousands of victims across millions of published pages to protect innocent people.”

“In cases where a victim’s name is allegedly not redacted, our teams are working around the clock to correct the issue and republish the appropriately redacted page as soon as possible,” the Justice Department said.

“Immediate judicial intervention” required to protect whistleblowers

The seven-page filing by Edwards and Henderson is filled with examples in which they claim the Justice Department failed to redact information about the women dating back to the previous release of the files on Dec. 19, 2025, as required under the Epstein File Transparency Act, which took effect a month ago.

The next day, Dec. 20, they said they immediately notified the Justice Department of “hundreds of redaction errors” that required urgent attention, including unredacted names and dates of birth.

One document alone identifies more than 30 victims, according to the motion seeking “immediate judicial intervention.”

Lawyers said the failure forced Epstein survivors to “stay up all night using the Justice Department’s search bar to locate and read every publicly posted document that would identify them, despite the office’s assurances that this would never happen.”

Collectively, Epstein is believed to have victimized girls and young women and forced them to perform sex acts, possibly over several decades, at his mansions in New York, Florida, and New Mexico, as well as on private islands in the Caribbean.

Many of Epstein’s estimated 1,000 to 1,200 victims have cooperated with FBI agents and federal prosecutors over the years, insisting that their identities and involvement in the investigation remain anonymous. Some of Epstein’s survivors were minors at the time of the alleged abuse.

But when some Epstein survivors and their lawyers contacted the Justice Department requesting redactions, the agency often blacked out some identifying information and left other data in its files, the lawyers said.

The concerns of many victims were dramatically exacerbated on January 30 by the release of exponentially larger Department of Justice files and more sensitive information about the victims and the nature of their allegations. Democratic lawmakers and other critics are calling on the Justice Department to take immediate action to protect against further harm.

Maxwell was convicted of related crimes and sentenced to 20 years in prison, which she is currently serving. Epstein died by suicide in a New York jail in 2019 while awaiting trial after being arrested on similar charges.

One Department of Justice document listing the names of 32 minor child victims.

In legal filings, lawyers cited a litany of missteps by the Justice Department, including those of minor victims whose names were revealed as many as 20 times on a single document.

“After reporting the violation, the Department of Justice redacted her name three more times, leaving 17 cases still unredacted at the time of this complaint,” the lawyers said.

Lawyers say that even though the Justice Department was aware of those names, another email listed 32 minor victims, with only one name redacted and 31 left visible.

Their request for immediate injunctive relief also asserts:

  • The FBI’s victim statement, known as a “302 report,” included the minor victim’s full, unredacted first and last name.
  • The handwritten FBI interview notes listed the underage victim’s full name unredacted at the beginning and throughout.
  • Documents that include the victim’s name and date of birth, bank information, driver’s license number, and email or home address.
  • A document in which the victim’s name is redacted in some places within the same document, but not in others.
  • The edit is a “pencil-thin” document with your full name and email address below.
  • A document with a well-edited photo in one example, but completely unedited up close.
  • Hundreds of documents revealing the names of four women who “have been in near-constant contact with the Department of Justice since December seeking protection.”

As a result of these redacting failures, 20 clients who claim to be Epstein’s survivors have agreed to release statements as part of an emergency appeal to the judge, the lawyers said.

‘My life is in immediate danger,’ one survivor tells Justice Department

“This is so wrong on so many levels,” said one person, who identified herself as Jane Doe No. 3. “It not only exposes victims to potential abuse and intimidation, but it could potentially destroy families and damage our careers. I’m horrified.”

Some said that newspapers and websites were located overseas that had all the details, including photos, that were not supposed to be linked.

“How is that possible?” asked Jane Doe #4. “Like the whole of the EU,[my home country]has strict privacy laws. I’m shocked. I didn’t expect our privacy to be so violated.”

While dozens of Epstein accusers have gone public with their accusations, some say their claims of anonymity to protect their privacy have now been shattered, putting them and their families at risk.

“Please, please remove my name!!!” Jane Doe 5 said. “You can only imagine the devastation your mistakes are inflicting on Jeffrey Epstein’s many other victims.”

Jane Doe 7 said the publication of her name and photo brought unwanted publicity and threats in her home country, where she now lives.

“The news media is making up crazy stories to make me seem like a legitimate target for others to attack physically and in the press,” said Jane Doe 7. “My life is in imminent danger unless you continue to release more files and information about me and remove or edit files and information that have already been released.”

He added: “This is a life-threatening situation for me. Please take my complaint seriously.”

Jane Doe 8 said she also received death threats within 24 hours of her release from the Department of Justice on January 30, including 51 posts mentioning her.

“(I’m) now in the process of closing my card and account because you had the audacity to release my private banking information,” Jane Doe 8 said. “This type of vicious attack on victims by the Department of Justice is abhorrent.”

Lawyers said in their filing that the Justice Department must redouble its efforts to ensure all names and identifying information are immediately redacted to prevent further harm.

In addition to immediate deletion of the files, they asked the court to appoint an independent special master to oversee editing and republication, and to leave open the possibility of judicial sanctions “including contempt and monetary relief.”

“Every moment counts for Jeffrey Epstein’s victims. The damage is ongoing and irreversible,” the attorneys said. “This court is the last line of defense for victims promised protection but instead exposed. Judicial intervention is not only appropriate, it is essential.”

Why women don’t like being told to smile at work

0

play

At a press conference in the Oval Office this week, President Donald Trump accused CNN’s Caitlan Collins of “not laughing” when she asked him about the Justice Department’s investigation into convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

“I’ve known you for 10 years,” Trump said from behind his resolution desk. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a smile on your face.”

This wasn’t the first time Trump has lashed out at Collins or other female journalists. Last year, he dismissed a Bloomberg News reporter who asked him a question about the Epstein file, saying, “Shut up! Shut up, pig.”

Women who have been told to smile throughout their careers took to social media to make the case.

“It’s never a good idea to make women smile more,” Caroline Dettman, chief marketing officer and head of growth business at World Business Chicago, wrote on LinkedIn. “Even if it’s unintentional, that statement is rude and misogynistic. I know this because throughout my career, I’ve been told by bosses, customers, partners, and colleagues to smile more.”

Is it sexist to ask women to smile?

Celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Victoria Beckham have often been grilled for not smiling in paparazzi photos. During the 2016 presidential campaign, Hillary Clinton was told to laugh more. Serena Williams was asked why she wasn’t smiling after defeating her sister Venus in a hard-fought quarter-final match. Actress Millie Bobby Brown was asked to smile by a photographer on the red carpet for the movie Stranger Things. “A smile? A smile,” she replied.

Is it sexist to ask women to smile?

According to the survey, 98% of women say they’ve been asked to smile at work at some point in their lives, and 15% say they’ve been asked to do so on a weekly basis, if not more often.

Research shows that the average woman smiles about 62 times a day, almost eight times more than the average man, but senior and executive-level executives were the most likely to be told to smile.

Many women think that smiling when necessary is the way to stand your ground, but not everyone agrees, and even not all women agree.

Vice President J.D. Vance, who was in the West Wing when Trump made the remark, told Megyn Kelly on Sirius

“I saw people online calling him a sexist for saying that,” Kelly said, noting that the late former Fox News chairman Roger Ailes often encouraged her to smile. “I literally said the same thing about Caitlan Collins on my show a year ago: She never laughs. You have to laugh once in a while.”

Workplace experts say the comments can appear well-intentioned, friendly and even harmless. However, many women don’t see it that way. They point out that smiling is rarely a job requirement for men.

“Women are expected to be friendly and friendly in order to meet gender expectations. That’s not only sexist, but also a hidden way of reinforcing the power imbalance for women in the workplace,” said Ruchika Malhotra, author of Uncompete and Inclusion on Purpose. “Men are not told to smile at work, and whether or not they smile has no impact on whether they are hired, promoted, or perceived in their leadership ability.”

This double standard forces women to conform to a narrow set of acceptable behaviors, which can negatively impact their careers, Malhotra said. Be tough, but not too tough. Be confident. But don’t be too confident. To be respected and liked at the same time.

“It’s a subtle reminder that the workplace wasn’t created for you, and that you have to change in order to exist,” said Lauren Howard, CEO of workplace safety advocacy firm L2 and host of the podcast “Different, Not Broken.”

Should women grin and bear it?

When someone asks you to smile at work, your first instinct may be to “smile and apologize for your previous facial condition,” Howard says. But she said that wasn’t necessary.

It’s okay to be frank, Howard says. “No one should police involuntary facial movements,” she said. “If someone tells you to smile at work, you have the right to politely decline and advise them that your face is appropriate for the workplace as is.”

Or you can use humor. “I joke that I would smile more if a male colleague came with me,” Malhotra said.

You can then confide in someone with power or influence, ask them to speak up if it happens again, or talk to the person who made the comment, she says.

President Trump announces event to ‘rededicate America as one nation under God’

play

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump announced plans to hold a nationwide prayer event on the National Mall in May to “rededicate America as one nation under God” during the year-long celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary.

In his remarks at the National Prayer Breakfast on February 5, President Trump mentioned the event, dubbed the National Jubilee of Prayer, Praise, and Thanksgiving and scheduled for May 17, and touted his administration’s efforts to “bring religion back into the public sphere.”

“To support this exciting renewal, we are pleased to announce this morning that we are inviting Americans from across the country to come together on the National Mall to pray and give thanks on May 17, 2026.”

“We are going to rededicate America as one nation under God,” he added, drawing long applause from the crowd and prompting a response from the president. “That’s what I mean by spirit. It’s pretty incredible to see.”

Most of America’s founding was under Christian rule. However, as outlined in the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment, the U.S. Constitution has a principle of separation of church and state that prohibits the government from establishing a state religion or favoring one religion over another.

In his remarks, Trump boasted of returning religion to the center of American politics and culture, highlighting efforts to support prayer in schools, policies targeting transgender people and the creation of a White House Office of Faith.

“Some major politicians refuse to say the word God. They don’t want to say it. I say it,” Trump said, adding that “there are many signs of a resurgence of religion” on his watch. “It’s coming back really strong. You know, churches are filling up. That wasn’t the case two years ago,” he said.

The National Mall prayer event is part of President Trump’s “Freedom 250” initiative, a subsidiary of the National Park Foundation, which is organizing events to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It is separate from and not affiliated with the bipartisan America 250 established by Congress. America 250 also plans a festival program throughout the year.

According to a description on the Freedom 250 website, the purpose of the prayer event is to “give thanks and praise for God’s providence for America over the past 250 years, while praying that God will bless and protect America for the next 250 years.”

“Through our speeches, songs, and stories, we will bear witness to the extraordinary story of how God has shaped the United States of America in powerful and surprising ways. We will remember the people, the sacrifices, and the defining moments in our history when God has manifested himself powerfully.” “This is more than just an event, this is a once-in-a-lifetime national moment.”

California’s new EV rebate targets first-time shoppers

0

play

  • California is introducing new electric vehicle rebates to replace lost federal tax credits.
  • The new state incentive will be limited to first-time electric vehicle buyers.
  • The program has caps on vehicle prices and buyer incomes.

California is moving to recoup at least some of the $7,500 federal electric vehicle tax credit it lost last year to President Donald Trump’s administration and Congress. But the state plans to limit the new incentives to first-time EV buyers.

As first reported by USA TODAY, California plans to spend $200 million in state funds to create an “on-the-bond” electric vehicle tax rebate that would provide instant discounts on EVs in the state with the most plug-in models in the nation.

But the California Air Resources Board, which regulates air pollution and vehicle emissions in the nation’s most populous state, said the new incentive program is only available to first-time EV buyers. The agency said other limits would include caps on the price of electric vehicles, similar to the limits placed on federal credits in the 2022 law.

What does California’s EV tax rebate mean for car buyers?

California has the highest percentage of car buyers choosing electric vehicles.

EVs and hybrids accounted for 26.3% of new light vehicle registrations in California in the third quarter of 2025, according to the Coalition for Automotive Innovation, which lobbies most major automakers in Washington, the latest data released by the group. The only other states with market share above 20% in Q3 2025 were Colorado, Washington State, and Washington DC.

Automakers have lamented the loss of federal incentives for electric vehicles, and some have cut back on plans to make future electric models in light of changes in federal support for the technology.

How many EV tax rebates has California given out so far?

In the previous Clean Vehicle Rebate Project, which ran from 2013 to 2024, California spent $1.49 billion to provide rebates on more than 586,000 electric vehicles. CARB said the previous EV tax credit had the following environmental benefits:

  • Over 11 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) reduction
  • Reduced nitrogen oxides (NOₓ) by more than 1,100 tons
  • Reduced particulate matter (PM) by more than 460 tons
  • Over 456 million gallons of fuel avoided

What other limits does California have on EV tax refunds?

California plans to replicate the EV price limits that were included in the previous federal tax credit.

The limits would be:

  • $55,000 for a new passenger car
  • $80,000 for vans, SUVs, and pickup trucks
  • $25,000 for used cars

CARB said automakers participating in the rebate program will be required to match state contributions, effectively doubling the incentives available to EV buyers, the agency said.

CARB said the decision to limit eligibility to first-time EV buyers will help “expand the market by introducing (zero-emission vehicle) technology to new consumers.”

“Research shows that once consumers switch to a ZEV, they typically do not go back to dirty gasoline or diesel cars,” the agency said.

Peter Attia, The Epstein Files and What It Means for Wellness Influencers

play

Controversial wellness guru Peter Attia has appeared in the latest batch of Epstein files, raising questions about his ethics.

Although Attia denied having “participated in any criminal activity” due to public references to his name in the file, his interactions with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein exposed questions about his qualifications and background.

In a 2016 email to Epstein, Attia joked that female genitals are “certainly low in carbohydrates, but we’re still waiting for results on gluten content.” Other emails date appointments with Mr. Epstein and colleagues that appear to have occurred around the same time that Mr. Epstein’s one-month-old baby suddenly stopped breathing, an incident in which Mr. Epstein had previously written about and chastised himself for not being by his wife and son’s side.

His public image has already taken a hit, with his “60 Minutes” segment being pulled, a CBS News contributor demanding he be removed, and partnerships with multiple wellness ventures including a protein bar brand and powdered drink supplement AG1 reportedly cut off.

“I apologize and regret putting myself in a position where my emails (some of which were embarrassing, in bad taste, and inexcusable) were made public. That is my responsibility. I accept that reality and the humiliation that comes with it,” Attia said in a statement to X.

Attia is a strong advocate of longevity medicine and has an incredible influence, including 1.6 million followers on Instagram and a podcast, The Drive, which reportedly has over 100 million downloads. His popular book “Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity” was a New York Times bestseller in 2023 and 2024.

In response to Attia’s apology statement, some people related to X defended Attia. “Please stop apologizing. Please don’t make me feel bad. Please don’t bring this up again,” one user posted.

“I believe and truly believe that you are driven by a passion for science (medicine). You have contributed widely to society through your work and research. Please stay positive,” one person wrote.

But experts say it’s a reminder to social media consumers that having a large number of followers doesn’t certify their credentials, and that it’s important to look at popular health influencers with a critical eye before “following” them.

Attia is a “great spokesperson” for the idea of healthy aging, but his background is not what his supporters would believe because of the way he presents himself, Dr. Douglas Vaughn, a professor of medicine at Northwestern, told USA TODAY.

“He’s not a scientist. He’s not a researcher,” Vaughn said. “He’s never done any real research in the field of aging, but he’s good at taking information in the field, putting it together, and packaging it in a way that people can understand and relate to.”

Vaughn, who is also director of the university’s Potokusnack Longevity Research Institute, has worked in the field for nearly 40 years, and he and his colleagues have struggled to win grants, organize labs, and test hypotheses.

“He hasn’t contributed to the field in terms of new information or new science,” Vaughn said. “He cherry-picks the information that is out there and packages it in a way that the public can understand.”

Wellness influencers and evidence-based medicine

Experts have long warned the public to be wary of health influencers without proper qualifications. Influencers often spread misleading or outright false information about health, from vaccines to raw milk.

For example, misinformation about the coronavirus has eroded trust in public health institutions, exacerbated already sharp political divisions, and created a near-constant challenge of separating fact from fiction, experts previously told USA TODAY.

“It’s heartbreaking,” said Dr. Jesse Ehrenfeld, an anesthesiologist and past president of the American Medical Association. “We work diligently to practice evidence-based medicine.”

And even if they disseminate information that contains a kernel of truth, that doesn’t mean everything they say should be taken as fact.

The “gold rush” of longevity medicine

In a now-deleted clip of her 60 Minutes interview with Attia, Norah O’Donnell said the billionaire’s patients were willing to spend six figures to see him.

“That’s a lot of money. What do you get for this?” she asked Atia.

“It’s a path that can help you achieve your goals of living better and living longer,” he says.

Vaughn says he’s wary of people who claim to have all the answers or who try to sell them.

“This is the Wild West. It’s a frenzy of gluttony. It’s a gold rush. You see people getting caught up in the frenzy and the momentum. But in 2026, there are more questions than answers,” he says of the proliferation of longevity drugs. He added that questions remain about the best way to slow aging, whether aging can actually be reversed, and how it can be done safely, effectively and affordably.

“If someone said they knew the answer today, I would be very skeptical,” he says.

Vaughn also said that companies are investing millions of dollars in “efforts to find the fountain of youth,” although there is still much work to be done.

“In the meantime, people will try to take advantage of this because there is an opportunity to make money,” he added.

For example, influencer Brian Johnson has amassed 2 million followers on Instagram as he aims to “achieve immortality by 2039” while also promoting phone apps and supplement products. In January 2025, he starred in Netflix’s Don’t Die: The Man Who Wants to Live Forever, a documentary about extreme exploration.

Follow the science, not the influencers

So who do you follow when an influencer turns out to be not what they seem?

Vaughan suggests consulting “real scientists” for health information.

“These are people who have dedicated their lives, their work, their science to the problems in this field,” he says. “These are programs, people and opportunities that the public should trust and have confidence in.”

For example, someone who runs a research lab and is the author of a peer-reviewed study.

He added that the most important thing when getting information from someone in the medical field is trust and confidence.

Public health scientist Jess Steyer runs a public health data consulting firm that produces the podcast Unbiased Science, which works to counter false health claims that are rampant online.

“I think 99 percent of what I’m doing right now is putting out the fires that wellness influencers have started,” she recently told NPR.

The actual current state of longevity medicine

Although it’s become a buzzword, longevity is not a “silver bullet,” but an evolving science, Vaughn explains.

When it comes to living longer and healthier, for example, several researchers previously interviewed by USA TODAY agree on a few fundamentals: ensuring adequate sleep, exercise, and social interaction. Limit stress. Eat a healthy diet and avoid obesity. Don’t smoke or drink too much. Please drive carefully.

Vaughan agrees that Attia has been an effective and passionate promoter of the importance of exercise and diet.

“I don’t think anyone would dispute this, but it’s unfair to think that he was a real scientist who actually did the research to understand what biological aging is and what we can do about it.”

Some say beware of “experts” who promise to “cure death” and are likely trying to sell you something, Dr. Eric Burdin, who runs the Buck Institute on Aging in Novato, California, previously told USA TODAY.

“There’s a spectrum of what we call crazy,” he said. “We’re not going to cure death. We’re not even sure that’s desirable.”

Why social media influencer “perks” matter at tax time

Social media influencers often seem to live glamorous lives, but offline they pay taxes just like the rest of us.

Social media content creators, like others in more conventional jobs, have until April 15 to file their tax returns with the IRS. Even if their lives look easy on Instagram, taxes are almost certainly more complicated.

“Being self-employed is more complicated than reporting W-2 income as an employee,” said Richard Pianoforte, managing director of tax at Fiduciary Trust International, which provides tax guidance to high-net-worth clients. “There are various deductions available and it is not always easy to determine the value of the products received.”

What taxes do social media influencers pay?

Influencers work as independent contractors for the companies they promote. Independent contractors are considered self-employed.

“In addition to standard federal and state income taxes, self-employed individuals are also required to pay self-employment taxes,” Pianoforte said. “Net income from self-employment is taxed at 15.3%, including 12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare.”

Also, since taxes in the United States are pay-as-you-go, you had to make estimated tax payments quarterly based on your income. This means you pay most of your taxes for the year when you receive your income, rather than paying it all in one lump sum at the end of the year.

What is content creator income?

“Contrary to the concept of ‘freebies,’ perks often come with taxes,” Pianoforte warned.

for example:

  • Sponsored Post: Any compensation you receive from a brand for content creation, whether in the form of videos, posts, or social media promotions, must be included as income.
  • brand partnership: If your brand sponsors a podcast or video channel, the payments you receive must be reported as income.
  • promotional items: Items received from brands for review must be reported as income at fair market value.
  • advertisement: You should also consider the income you receive from advertising.
  • barter: When a person exchanges services for something other than money, what each person receives in that transaction is considered income by the IRS and is taxable, said Hannah Cole, IRS registered agent and author of “Taxes for Humans.” “If a musician performs in a bar for Guinness, they have to report it to Guinness. Get a receipt,” she said.

What is tax deductible?

Examples of items eligible for deduction are:

half of self-employment tax That’s because half the amount your employer would have paid you if you worked for someone else is from your adjusted gross income.

Specific purchases dedicated to content creationdepends on the content. For example, beauty vloggers can deduct the cost of makeup and hair products used in their videos, but only When used for content. “The rule is that if it’s something you wear solely for the job and you can remove it from your body, you can get a discount, just like costumes and safety equipment,” Cole said. An influencer’s hot new hairstyle doesn’t qualify as a tax deduction, she said, and the khaki shorts and white polo shirt you might have bought for work aren’t tax deductible because you can wear them around town, she said.

Home Office deductions. Since many influencers work from home, a portion of their residence may be deductible according to the rules for home office deductions. Influencers may be able to deduct a portion of their cell phone, internet and utility bills, Cole said.

What tax forms should content creators receive?

You must receive a Form 1099-NEC from each partner who pays you $600 or more. But experts warn that you should report all income on your tax return, including the value of the products you receive, regardless of the amount or whether you received a 1099-NEC.

If you earn income from other platforms like YouTube, Instagram, or AdSense, you will also receive a Form 1099-NEC for this income over $600, online tax preparation software platform TaxSlayer says on its website.

Note: As an influencer, your state tax obligations can also be complicated if you work for a company outside your home state. You must file a tax return and pay taxes on the income in every state in which you earn income. You must also report that income on your home state tax return, but your home state typically allows you to deduct taxes paid to another state on the same income.

How many social media creators are there?

There were 27 million paid content creators in the U.S., according to a 2023 report from Keller Advisory Group, a social media and marketing specialist research group. Of these, 44%, or nearly 12 million people, are said to work full-time as creators.

The average annual salary for creators is approximately $93,000, but more than half of paid content creators earned less than $10,000 per year. A third had incomes of $1,000 to $2,000 per year. It found that 6% of Americans between the ages of 16 and 54 are full-time creators or influencers, earning an average of $179,000 a year.

Prescription drug website “TrumpRx” scheduled to launch

President Donald Trump is scheduled to announce on February 5 the launch of TrumpRx, a website aimed at providing low-cost medicines as part of his administration’s efforts to bring prices down to levels paid by other developed countries.

The prices will reflect discounts the White House announced it had negotiated with more than a dozen drug companies, including Amgen, Boehringer Ingelheim, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Eli Lilly, EMD Serono, Genentech, Gilead, GSK, Merck, Novartis, Novo Nordisk, Pfizer and Sanofi, under “most-favored-nation” drug pricing agreements.

White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt urged the public to tune in at 7 p.m.

“President Trump, Dr. Oz, and National Design Studio Director Joe Gebbia will officially unveil TrumpRx, a cutting-edge website for American consumers to purchase low-cost prescription drugs,” she wrote to X. “This historic announcement will save millions of Americans money. You won’t want to miss it!”

In a series of Oval Office announcements in 2025, President Trump touted more than a dozen deals with pharmaceutical giants to sell drugs to Medicaid and TrumpRx at discounted prices.

In each agreement, the Trump administration agreed to postpone planned tariffs on the pharmaceutical industry in exchange for drug companies selling their products at a discount to Medicaid and directly to consumers through TrumpRx.

Pfizer, which first announced the partnership on September 30, said the program would allow patients to purchase Pfizer medicines at an average discount of 50%. The majority of its primary care treatments and some specialty brands will also be covered, the company said in a news release.

“By taking this bold step, we are ending the era of global price gouging at the expense of American families and making America healthy again,” President Trump said of Pfizer’s move.

President Trump said the two companies have agreed to sell prescription drugs at prices not to exceed comparable country prices. The agreement builds on an executive order signed by President Trump in March that instituted a “most-favoured nation” policy for drug pricing.

President Trump announced his first contract with Pfizer on September 30, followed by deals with more than a dozen other companies in October, November, and December.

In November, President Trump announced deals with pharmaceutical companies Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk to reduce the prices of popular weight-loss drugs Wegoby and Zepbound and expand Medicare coverage of these drugs for seniors.

On December 19, President Trump announced “most-favored-nation” agreements with Amgen, Boehringer Ingelheim, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Genentech, Gilead, GSK, Merck, Novartis, and Sanofi.

Who will use TrumpRx?

Most working-age Americans receive health insurance and prescription drug coverage from their employers. Consumers who purchase Affordable Care Act insurance, and elderly and low-income households enrolled in the government health insurance programs Medicare and Medicaid, typically receive drug discounts through their insurance plans.

But uninsured Americans often have to pay for prescription drugs with their own money.

Consumer websites like GoodRx and entrepreneur Mark Cuban’s Cost Plus Drugs offer consumers discounts on prescription drugs

Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly sell popular weight-loss drugs through their own pharmacies, chain retailers, and discount sites. Consumers need a prescription from a health care provider to purchase drugs.

Lindsey Vonn shocked in a squat and box jump over a torn ACL. watch video

CORTINA D’AMPEZZO — Even with a broken knee, Lindsey Vonn can do things that the average person wouldn’t be able to do if they were healthy.

The 41-year-old posted a video on Thursday, February 5, showing her doing squats, side lunges, lifting weights, jumping, and kicking her feet on a balance ball. The only sign of a torn anterior cruciate ligament, bone bruise and torn meniscus in her left knee is the brace she wears.

“I’m not giving up. I’m working as hard as I can to make it happen,” Vonn said in an Instagram post.

Vonn plans to ski at the Milan-Cortina Games despite injuring her knee on Friday, January 30, when she crashed during the final downhill run before the Olympics. She said Tuesday, Feb. 3, that her knee was stable and she was able to try skiing that day.

The first official training will take place on Friday 6th February and the big test will take place. Vonn will start in 10th place behind fellow American Breezy Johnson. Another training run will be held on Saturday ahead of the downhill race on Sunday February 8th.

The first training run, originally scheduled for Thursday, was canceled due to heavy snow in Cortina.

“Thank you to my team and everyone for your incredible support. Keep believing,” Vonn wrote, along with prayer hands and heart emojis.

Vonn was the heavy favorite for gold on the downhill stretch before her crash. She finished on the podium in each of her first five downhill races, winning two of them and leading the World Cup season standings in the field.
