  • Republican Sen. Tim Scott criticized a video posted by President Trump that depicted the Obamas as monkeys.
  • The video, shared on Truth Social, also included baseless allegations of voter fraud.

Republican Sen. Tim Scott, one of President Donald Trump’s most ardent supporters, is condemning the president’s late-night truth social posts that depicted former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama as monkeys.

In an unusual rebuke, a junior senator from South Carolina said in a Feb. 6 post to

The now-deleted one-minute video highlights unsubstantiated allegations of voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election, then briefly introduces derogatory footage of the Obamas.

The senator’s comments on Trump’s Feb. 5 post mark the resignation of Scott, who serves as the longest-serving black senator in U.S. history and chairs the National Republican Senatorial Committee. Scott is also a former 2024 Republican presidential candidate and was on Trump’s short list of running mates.

The White House acknowledged that the president posted the video and also defended his actions.

“This is from an internet meme video that depicts President Trump as the king of the jungle and Democrats as characters from ‘The Lion King,'” White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt said in a statement to PBS News correspondent Liz Landers on February 6.

Hours later, a White House official told USA TODAY that a White House official had made the post in error and it has since been deleted.

President Obama’s press secretary did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment.

The Truth About Trump: Bipartisan Leaders Condemn Social Posts

President Trump’s Truth social posts were widely condemned by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who called the president “unstable.”

In a post on “Why do Republican leaders like John Thune continue to support this sick man? All Republicans must immediately denounce Donald Trump’s disgusting bigotry.”

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized Trump’s post as racist and vile. And abominable.

“This is dangerous and degrading to our country. Where are the Senate Republicans?” Schumer wrote in a post on

At least two Republican senators have also condemned Trump’s now-deleted post, including Republican Sen. Pete Ricketts of Nebraska.

“Even if this was a Lion King meme, a reasonable person would understand that it has a racist undertone,” Ricketts said on Show X. “The White House should do what anyone would do when they make a mistake: take it down and apologize.”

Sen. Roger Wicker of Mississippi echoed similar sentiments.

“This is completely unacceptable. The president should retract and apologize,” Wicker said on the X Show.

Timothy Busfield indicted on child sexual abuse charges

Actor and director Timothy Busfield, husband of actress Melissa Gilbert, was charged Friday with child sexual abuse.

play

A New Mexico grand jury indicted actor Timothy Busfield on Friday on four counts of criminal sexual contact with a child, Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman said.

The Feb. 6 indictment comes weeks after the 68-year-old “West Wing” actor was arrested on sexual abuse charges that occurred while filming the TV series “Cleaning Women.”

USA TODAY has reached out to Busfield’s attorney for comment.

Prosecutors say Busfield is accused of abusing the two actors, who were 7 and 8 years old at the time, while working on the series between late 2022 and early 2024. Busfield also served as the program’s director. He denies any wrongdoing.

Busfield’s indictment comes shortly after he was removed from an upcoming episode of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.”

Busfield, who had previously been cast in a guest role, was replaced this week by “Dexter” star David Zayas, a source familiar with the situation confirmed to USA TODAY. Zayas will play Busfield in Season 27 of SVU, which follows a detective investigating sex crimes.

Timothy Busfield suspect

The actor accused of inappropriate physical contact with two child actors has pleaded not guilty and said the allegations were an act of retaliation for the boys’ return to the show.

Mr. Busfield turned himself in to authorities on Tuesday, January 13th. TMZ obtained footage of Busfield speaking at his attorney’s office in Albuquerque before he was taken into custody.

“I’m going to stand up to these lies. They’re terrible,” he said in the video. “Those are all lies. I didn’t do anything to those little kids. And I’m going to fight it. … So, good luck. I hope you get out soon.”

Busfield, who has appeared in court several times wearing an orange prison uniform, has been supported by his wife, Little House on the Prairie star Melissa Gilbert.

What is Timothy Busfield accused of?

Busfield’s abuse of the child actor is said to have occurred between late 2022 and early 2024. One child claimed that Busfield touched her genitals several times. Both claim Mr. Busfield touched them inappropriately and told them to call them “Uncle Tim.”

The child’s mother reported the incident to Child Protective Services, according to the criminal complaint. One of the children has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety and is afraid to go public with the allegations of abuse because of retaliation from Bassfield, according to the complaint. In 2024, staff at the University of New Mexico Hospital requested an investigation because the boys appeared to have been groomed.

Busfield admitted in a phone interview with police that the set was a “playful environment” and that he likely tickled the boys, according to the affidavit. Production assistants told Albuquerque police that Busfield sometimes seemed nervous and unprofessional.

In the new charges, a pretrial detention motion filed on Jan. 14 revealed that the victim’s alleged father, Colin Swift, told law enforcement on Jan. 13 that Busfield sexually abused his daughter “several years ago” in California.

The complaint alleges that Busfield “pleaded his family not to report him to law enforcement if he went to therapy,” adding that Swift, who was “a therapist himself,” believed “that was the best course of action at the time.”

Chevrolet celebrates America with revived classic commercial

0

play

  • The ad is scheduled to air during the Olympic opening ceremony on February 6th.
  • The ad will also appear during pregame coverage of the Super Bowl.

As part of its plans to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary this year, Chevrolet is bringing back some of its favorite consumer campaigns from the past century, starting with one of its most iconic commercials.

Viewers will get their first glimpse of the commercial, which will air during the opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, and another glimpse during the Super Bowl pregame show.

The latest spot is a “modern take” on the brand’s ad, “See the USA in Your Chevrolet,” sung by the late legendary entertainer and TV host Dinah Shore.

The updated commercial features the same song, but sung by up-and-coming country singer Brooke Lee, known for her songs “Dandelion” (featuring Lukas Nelson) and “So Beautiful.”

The ad, scheduled to air on February 6, follows Lee singing from the tailgate of a 2026 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 that the company flew to the top of Utah’s treacherous Castle Rock.

Steve Majoros, Chevrolet’s chief marketing officer, told the Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network, that to maintain the authenticity that underlines the brand, the company needs to shoot its ads the old-fashioned, hard way, without the use of artificial intelligence.

This is the third time General Motors has carted a Chevrolet up the 400-foot rock, having flown a Chevrolet Impala onto the rock for television and print advertising in 1964 and 1973.

“Third time’s the charm, right? Every time we’ve done it, it’s been symbolic: ‘What’s that Chevrolet doing on top of the mountain? It’s selling cars!'” he said. “It was done through the voice of the time. But the message that Chevrolet is on top is still very relevant today.”

Major US companies have come under fire for not hiring animators, actors, directors or cameramen and relying on AI in advertising to save money. Jeep was one of the first (and largest) car companies to use AI-generated visuals in advertising campaigns at scale.

While Majoros said any company today would be “foolish” not to take advantage of AI when they can, he said Chevrolet’s marketing team believes spending the extra money and effort is a sign of respect for its customers.

While some safety personnel and equipment on site were digitally removed and certain areas touched up with computer-generated imagery (CGI), the rest, including Lee’s song, was accomplished without the use of computers.

“We think this is a new period where Chevrolet can really communicate and make a statement about how we feel about ourselves and more importantly, how we feel about our customers and the impact we have on families,” Majoros said.

And because the song is a call to action, it was important to the team that all of the images of America seen from behind the windshield of a real Chevrolet were real places. Redwood National Park, California. St. Louis. Nashville; Florida Keys, Florida and New York City. All locations were visited by Silverado LT Trail Boss, Equinox, Equinox EV, Traverse, Corvette, and Trax vehicles.

When the lyrics become popular

The golden age of television also ushered in a golden age of advertising jingles, with GM’s “See the USA in Your Chevrolet” long considered one of the most famous. According to GM, the jingle was first performed on the Dinah Shore Show in 1951. The show was renamed the Dinah Shore Chevrolet Show in 1956 and ran until 1961.

“It’s surreal to collaborate with Chevrolet and put your voice on an iconic song that your grandparents knew by heart,” Lee said. “It’s a dream come true to collaborate with a brand I respect on a campaign that celebrates our beautiful country. I’m having a lot of fun driving the same Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 that will be featured on the U.S. tour.”

The song reflects America’s era of boundless optimism, which is why Majoros said there was no better theme to start the series with. After all, he said, the Chevrolet brand’s enduring meaning is as American as “baseball, hot dogs and apple pie.”

Choosing a country music star for the one-minute spot is a great fit for the brand. A significant portion of the approximately 1,000 songs that feature Chevrolet in their lyrics are from this genre. He said Lee was exactly what the team was looking for.

“We couldn’t have chosen a better person. We needed a sense of adventure,” Majoros said. “We needed someone willing to ride in the helicopter.”

The ad, which premiered during the Olympics and then appears during pre-game coverage of the Super Bowl, is cheaper than during the main show. Mike Marshall, head of global advertising at NBCUniversal, said the average cost of a 30-second commercial during Super Bowl 60 was about $8 million. I quoted that number on my podcast last month.

Other promotions celebrating America’s birthday include exclusive special editions and appearance packages for five American-made vehicles in Chevrolet’s 2026 lineup, including the Corvette, Silverado EV, Silverado LD, Silverado HD and Colorado.

The collection, dubbed “Stars and Steel,” takes inspiration from the American flag and is scheduled to launch later this year. The Chevrolet Corvette CR1X sold for $2.6 million at Barrett-Jackson.

US, Iran test diplomacy in Oman as fears of war grow

0

play

American and Iranian negotiators held indirect talks in Oman’s capital Muscat on February 6, with the aim of avoiding a new military conflict between the two countries and dragging the region into another war.

The talks could lead to the first face-to-face talks between the United States and Iran since June last year, when the United States bombed Iran’s main nuclear facilities as part of the 12-day war between Israel and the Islamic Republic.

Iranian state television reported in the late afternoon that talks mediated by Oman had concluded. There was little immediate indication from the White House whether the two sides found common ground during the talks. But Iran’s top diplomat, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, characterized the talks as a good start.

The White House did not respond to requests for comment.

The meeting came as President Donald Trump dispatched an “armada” to the Middle East that includes an aircraft carrier, as well as other warships, fighter jets, surveillance drones and advanced missile defense systems. President Trump has threatened to bomb Iran if diplomatic efforts fail.

What is the US demanding from Iran?

There are clear differences of opinion between the United States and Tehran over Iran’s nuclear program. The United States wants Iran to completely freeze its nuclear program and eliminate its stockpile of enriched uranium, a key ingredient in making nuclear weapons. Iran announced that it had halted uranium enrichment following the US bombing in June. The Iranian government has also long maintained, amid deep international skepticism, that its nuclear program is only for civilian energy purposes.

The US government has said it wants to expand talks to include Iranian ballistic missiles. support for armed groups such as Hezbollah, Hamas, and Yemen’s Houthi rebels; And what U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called “the treatment of our own people” is a reference to Iran’s recent brutal security crackdown on large demonstrations.

Aragushi said Iran wants to limit talks in Muscat with Trump’s US envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, to nuclear issues. Iran also wants the United States to lift economic sanctions that President Trump reimposed in 2018 when he abandoned the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal with six countries.

Foreign Minister Araghchi stated on February 6, “Iran will approach diplomacy with open eyes and with the steady memory of last year.”

What can be achieved in negotiations between the US and Iran?

Although the US and Iran remain far apart, both sides have indicated they are willing to try diplomacy again. In the short term, a successful outcome in Muscat may avert the immediate threat of a U.S. attack on Iran, but it is unlikely to resolve the larger issues on which the two sides are divided.

Experts say that if the talks are successful, both sides could signal a commitment to de-escalating tensions, which could ultimately lead to a framework for further negotiations. The Muscat talks could therefore be the beginning of a more formal negotiation process, rather than an end in itself. Oman’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that the talks were “consultations focused on creating appropriate conditions for the resumption of diplomatic and technical negotiations.”

Still, President Trump has indicated that he believes the key to successful negotiations, the key to victory, is often directness and unpredictability, whether it’s tariffs, immigration, Greenland or Venezuela.

“As long as the two countries remain this far apart and President Trump takes this hasty diplomatic approach, it could quickly lead to escalation,” said Trita Parsi, an expert on Iranian politics and U.S.-Iran relations and executive vice president at the Quincy Institute think tank in Washington, D.C.

Olympic opening ceremony style guide: Mongolian team is best dressed

0

play

MILAN — Milan Fashion Week kicked off last month, but Italy’s fashion capital is looking for new styles as more than 90 countries prepare to make the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics their runways.

Each country will do its best — and the most fashionable — Friday’s opening ceremony brought a step forward, a scene that has grown in opulence and atmosphere over the years. The Parade of Nations provides a unique opportunity for each delegation to showcase its culture and traditions on a national stage through ceremonial costume.

The first Olympic medals won’t be awarded until Saturday, but there are some serious style points up for grabs. Which country has the best Opening Ceremony look? Which costume is the most controversial? I went through each country’s lookbook and presented them with a variety of top-notch awards. (By the way, I’m Sydney. Thank you!)

Check out our style guide for the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics.

🏆Best Dressed:

team mongolia

Take a moment to pick your jaw up off the floor. Mongolia stole the show with its intricate ceremonial costumes at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where the country once again achieved glorious honors. Goyol Cashmere has created a Mongolian deer that effortlessly blends Mongolian identity and tradition with traditional clothing that retains a modern feel. The opening ceremony look was inspired by the Great Mongol Empire of the 13th to 15th centuries, “one of the most powerful eras in our country’s history,” Goyol Kasimir explains. This outfit incorporates Mongolian cashmere, silk trim and embroidery for a gorgeous finish that’s worth celebrating.

🥈Runner:

team france

Le Coq Sportif takes French elegance to a new level with an opening ceremony look that rivals high fashion couture. The French sportswear company has swapped the country’s iconic tricolor for a cooler color palette inspired by mountain peaks that seems appropriate for the Winter Olympics. The Ceremony collection includes a hooded cream Sahara puffer jacket featuring a topographic graphic motif in muted blue, white and red. I’m especially a fan of layers, which add drama and depth to a silhouette. Le Coq Sportif balances modern flair with vintage flair by bringing back the frosty blue snowsuit from its 1976 archives, bringing an effortlessly chic nod to the past. Bravo.

🧸 Most wearable:

team usa

Ralph Lauren has been Team USA’s go-to designer for 20 years, and the Milan-Cortina Winter Games will be no different. Team USA’s attire for the 2024 Paris Games has proven divisive, but the US Winter Olympics team has the potential to unite the internet like Marvel’s Avengers, if it’s possible.

Ralph Lauren’s opening ceremony look features a winter-white wool coat with wooden toggles, an American flag wool turtleneck sweater, and tailored wool pants for a clean, patriotic vibe. The uniform is completed with knitted mittens and brown suede alpine boots with red laces. Each item is “proudly made in the USA,” Ralph Lauren added, adding that they have the potential to become winter wardrobe staples.

💥Most polarizing:

team canada

Canadian sports apparel giant Lululemon chose a maroon quilted vest with all-over red maple leaves and an oversized symbol for the opening ceremony. Some people criticize Lululemon’s avant-garde approach, but personally, I think the big maple leaves work because they’re memorable, whether you like it or not. This motif screams Canada, which is the main point of the national parade.

Canada’s podium outfit, a bright red puffer coat with a topographical map printed on it, highlighted the country’s landscape, but Lululemon design director Katherine LeBlanc joked that it was “the brightest red chemically possible to make into fabric.” Lululemon added a pop of color with green inspired by Canada’s glaciers and icebergs.

Lululemon has collaborated with Japan’s top athletes, including hockey player Sidney Crosby, to create a collection that is both functional and stylish. This gear also includes braille, magnetic zippers, and adaptive shoes.

🫂Most comfortable:

team great britain

Ben Sherman has mastered a stylish yet functional Olympic collection that you can wear post-Olympic. The British clothing brand outfitted the national team in cream-colored wool-blend knit jackets that feature a continuing Union flag motif. Striped accents give this relaxed zip-up a sophisticated look, making it an instant classic. Ben Sharman, who has created Britain’s ceremony look for four consecutive Games, said: “Each element has warmth and detail, reflecting a timeless British aesthetic.”

Remember when British diver Tom Daley made headlines for knitting in the stands at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics? Now, the five-time Olympic medalist donned a hand-knitted scarf and winter hat to bear the flag at the opening and closing ceremonies. Mr Daly raised the Union flag at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Honorable Mention: Norwegian Team

Dale of Norway’s 70-year history of creating Olympic sweaters dates back to the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d’Ampezzo, and the 2026 Milan-Cortina Games marks a full-circle moment for the brand. Our half-zip knitwear features pure Norwegian wool and traditional Scandinavian geometric patterns, making it a great addition to anyone’s closet.

💭 Most Meaningful

italian team

  • designer: EA7 Emporio Armani

The Italian national team will wear EA7 Emporio Armani for their home country’s 2026 Olympics, marking the Italian fashion house’s eighth overall collection for the Summer/Winter Olympics, and the last collection created by namesake Giorgio Armani before his death at the age of 91 on September 4, 2025. The country’s Olympic uniform features a white padded jacket with “Italia” embroidered in opalescent letters on the back, and a red, white and green collar.

In May, shortly before his death, Giorgio Armani said: “Milan and the Olympic and Paralympic Games. I could not think of a more exciting collaboration that brings together the city that has given me so much and so much sport.” “Working for and with Italian athletes is always a pleasure and a source of great pride. I chose a single color, white, to evoke harmony with the snow-capped mountains. Perhaps the most important of the sporting values is respect, which I distilled into a vision of simplicity, clarity and purity.”

🪄Best Feel:

team australia

  • designer: Sportscraft (opening ceremony), Karbon, XTM (competition wear)

The Australian team ditched its signature gold for the opening ceremony, opting instead for a white cable sweater and wool-blend blazer designed by Sportscraft Formalwear, featuring a crest and gold buttons. The names of all of Australia’s Winter Olympians are sewn into the lining of the blazer, and Australian Olympic curler Taari Gill said the special touch “sends shivers down her spine”.

“Seeing our names among so many famous Olympians gives me a shiver down my spine and a deep sense of gratitude,” said Olympic curler Tali Gill. “It’s a reminder of how far we’ve come and how special it is to stand as part of something so much bigger than ourselves.”

💡Most innovative:

new zealand

New Zealand athletes will literally be fighting their hearts out. The black jackets for the opening ceremony in Kathmandu were decorated with silver ferns on the back, and each had a QR code woven into the inside. “Scanning the code will connect you to a digital platform filled with messages of support from New Zealanders and fans around the world, reminding you that our team of 5 million is right there with you on your journey,” the New Zealand Olympic Committee said in a statement.

💢 The edgiest:

czech

Alpine Pro continued the long-standing Czech tradition of featuring Czech artists in the country’s Olympic collection. This Olympic cycle highlights motifs from the famous Czech graphic designer Wojtek Preisig combined with retro elements from the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d’Ampezzo. The finished product is a series of knit sweaters and winter jackets featuring bold, distinctive patterns in blue, red, white and yellow. The “Rashkowka” hat, a huge hit in this country and named after ski jumper Jiří Rashka’s 1968 Olympic victory, will also be revived.

Lead designer Aneshka Berekova said she wanted the collection to have a “loungewear vibe, evoking the feel of a winter vacation in the mountains, combining iconic pieces with a more contemporary approach.”

President Trump posts AI-generated video showing Barack Obama and Michelle Obama as monkeys

President Donald Trump shared a clip of former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama appearing as monkeys in a late-night Truth Social post on February 5th.

The approximately one-minute video features footage discussing baseless allegations of voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election, before briefly cutting to clips of the Obamas.

The image of the Obamas, which appears to have been generated by artificial intelligence, shows the remains of two monkeys whose faces have been replaced with those of the former president and first lady. They seem to be in the jungle, with monkeys flying in the background. The White House dismissed criticism that the video was racist, saying it was taken from a meme depicting President Trump and the Obamas as characters from The Lion King.

Trump did not appear in the video posted. The original meme referenced by the White House shows President Trump’s head superimposed on the body of a lion. The original video also shows the faces of other politicians superimposed on the animals, including former President Joe Biden, California Governor Gavin Newsom, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

The president’s post was shared just before midnight on February 5th, but there was no accompanying document.

Many on social media were quick to condemn the depiction as racist. White House press secretary Caroline Levitt said in a statement that the image came from a social media meme.

“This is from an internet meme video that portrays President Trump as the king of the jungle and Democrats as characters from The Lion King. Stop the false outrage and start reporting on what actually matters to the American people today,” Levitt said.

Backstreet Boys exclusive interview, T-Mobile Super Bowl ad released

NEW YORK – The Backstreet Boys are back on the big stage. USA TODAY has an exclusive look at the group’s new Super Bowl ad in collaboration with T-Mobile. Before filming the commercial, five music artists invite USA TODAY to the legendary Hit Factory studio in Manhattan’s NoHo neighborhood.

Nick Carter, 46, talks about his studio, which is decorated with plaques of the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Rihanna and Adele. “But I can’t remember what it was.”

A quick Google search reveals that the Backstreet Boys recorded the music for a re-release of their debut LP in the US in 1997. Perhaps it will jog their memory?

“That was a long time ago,” Carter replies.

Kevin Richardson shrugs and says, “Maybe it’s true.”

we are do What is known is that five artists are currently re-recording their 1999 hit “I Want It That Way” for a commercial. The Backstreet Boys speak exclusively with USA TODAY in the studio about their past, present and immediate future as they prepare for an ad shoot in familiar territory.

The Backstreet Boys almost performed the Super Bowl halftime show.

This will be the Backstreet Boys’ second Super Bowl campaign. The group teamed up with hip-hop artist Chance the Rapper and snack brand Doritos in 2019. But the connection to the big game dates back to 2001, when the group sang the national anthem before Super Bowl XXXV, when the Baltimore Ravens defeated the New York Giants.

Howie Droe admitted that this game was the reason he became a Ravens fan. Two other bandmates recalled that they also had the option of playing during the halftime show rather than before the game.

“We thought it was an honor,” Carter said.

“And back then, halftime shows weren’t what they are now,” Richardson added. “I thought a lot of people changed the channel because there was something else going on at halftime.”

The 2001 halftime show was produced by MTV. The final lineup included Aerosmith, NSYNC, Britney Spears, Mary J. Blige, and Nelly.

As for 2026, Bad Bunny will headline the halftime show. And “One Call Away” artist Charlie Puth will sing the national anthem.

“Charlie’s going to kill it,” says AJ McLean, 48. “He has perfect pitch, so you don’t have to worry about that. He expressed that he was obviously nervous…because again, all eyes are on you.”

“We used to sing the national anthem in many places,” Dorov, 52, recalls. “We used to watch a lot of baseball games and college games. We went to the World Series, and in the early days we watched the Orlando Magic.”

The band formed in Orlando, becoming friends with NBA star Shaquille O’Neal in the process. The Basketball Hall of Famer recently told USA TODAY that one of his biggest business regrets was not signing the band when he met them. After first meeting at Shaq’s home, Carter and Dolloff revealed that they had heard Shaq wanted to sign him. MacLean took away something completely different.

“One of the things that’s always stuck with me is that when I was talking to (Shaq), he was wearing slides and he was the first guy I’d ever seen with his toenails painted,” McLean said. “They were red. I don’t know if that’s what inspired me to start painting my nails.”

T-Mobile brings Backstreet Boys back to Times Square

The Backstreet Boys are synonymous with MTV’s Total Request Live from the heart of Times Square. Five music artists are returning to the area for this Super Bowl ad. This ad was filmed inside T-Mobile’s flagship store. Carter points out how the area has changed since the late 1990s.

“You can’t even drive through it now,” Carter said. “But I think our memories will always be so fond because we all came together.”

As for the commercial, the Backstreet Boys appear out of nowhere in the middle of the store and sing about why T-Mobile is “better here” to the tune of “I Want It That Way.” The “Tell Me Why” ad also features influencer Dorsky and platinum-selling musician Machine Gun Kelly.

Some of the lyrics for this spot were written by Brian Littrell, whom Carter calls a “walking jingle.” Littrell thought the first demo needed an additional chorus.

“We just have the added bonus of doing the best we can as a band to elevate this song even more,” says the 50-year-old singer. “You’re talking about a symbolic network that connects people through cell phones and their connections, and you’ve got a great song. The hard part is the phrasing, trying to fit all the words in to sing.”

The other thing is that the Backstreet Boys have been playing this song a certain way for over 25 years. And they aren’t stopping anytime soon, with additional dates set for a residency at the Las Vegas Sphere this month and 10 headlining shows scheduled for The Deck in Dusseldorf, Germany, later this year. This was the first time this band broke overseas.

At this point in their careers, music artists have a good idea of what works and what doesn’t. Richardson said he will remain in “show mode” for the time being and has no plans for new music as a result.

“Every time we’re together, we talk about the future and what else we want to do,” MacLean said, adding that talk also includes new music. “So you never know what the future holds. We’re always growing.”

  • Opponents planned an alternative halftime show featuring country and rock artists Kid Rock, Brantley Gilbert, and Lee Brice.
  • Supporters say the backlash is politically motivated and that Bad Bunny’s performance celebrates America’s diversity.

Nothing could keep Sen. Tommy Tuberville away from the 2025 Super Bowl, after he hitchhiked in the Air Force with President Donald Trump and several other Republicans.

“Happy Super Bowl Sunday,” the Alabama state senator and former Auburn football coach said in a Feb. 9, 2025, post to X. “It’s an honor to be a part of the @POTUS team heading to Super Bowl XI.”

But he won’t even be looking forward to attending the first gridiron rematch in 10 years between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots on February 9th.

It’s not because of any bitter rivalries with teams, players, or other coaches. Rather, the love for the sport that underpinned his political career was overshadowed by partisan divisions over the NFL’s choice of Bad Bunny to headline its Super Bowl 60 halftime performance.

“Bad Bunny is the worst,” an Alabama Republican running for governor this year told USA TODAY. “Ever since (NFL Commissioner Roger) Goodell took over in 2006, the NFL has woken up. We’re not going to watch the Super Bowl this year.”

Some conservative leaders and activists have voiced opposition to the popular Puerto Rican musician, who can perform all of his songs in Spanish, including Louisiana House Speaker Mike Johnson, who announced his disapproval last October, and conservative commentator Tomi Lahren, who mistakenly said he was “not an American artist.”

The White House said President Trump would watch the game, but would change the channel during the halftime show in favor of an alternative program organized by conservative activists that featured country, rap-rock and heavy metal singer Kid Rock.

White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt told reporters at a Feb. 5 briefing that “the president would prefer Kid Rock’s performance to Bad Bunny’s, I have to say that.”

Controversies and boycotts have brought the league under fire in the past. But this time, the “Make America Great Again” movement is trying to fire the musical performance given their fierce opposition to Bad Bunny.

Opponents of his selection argue that he is alienating conservative fans because he is known for breaking gender norms through fashion and for sharply criticizing President Trump’s aggressive anti-immigrant campaign.

Will sports become politically polarized?

The Super Bowl is by far the most-watched television event in America, attracting hundreds of millions of spectators each year. The halftime show, including the commercials, provides an important cultural touchstone.

No other professional sports league rivals the NFL in popularity, with similar levels of support among Democrats and Republicans.

A 2023 survey by Ipsos found that football reigns supreme among American sports fans. According to the poll, just under half of Americans describe themselves as NFL fans, with 44% of Democrats and 45% of Republicans saying the same.

Market research firm Ipsos said in a summary of its findings that sports remains “a rare opportunity to share moments and memories together as Americans become increasingly sorted into political bubbles.”

But MAGA officials, including Trump, have thrown flags at Goodell, along with rapper Jay-Z, who was named the NFL’s entertainment strategist in 2019, for hosting artists they say are politically charged against their beliefs, including rapper Kendrick Lamar in 2025 and singer Beyoncé in 2016.

MAGA beef with Bad Bunny explained

Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martinez, is from Puerto Rico and has around 35 million followers on TikTok and 50 million followers on Instagram. Sports officials say his selection is part of the NFL’s larger business goals of expanding globally.

But the reggaeton rapper, who delves into other music genres with African and Latin American roots, such as plena, jivaro and bomba, is also one of the most politically outspoken artists of our time. He has repeatedly expressed his disapproval of the Trump administration’s immigration policies, most recently at the 68th Grammy Awards.

“Before I say thank God, I’m going to say ICE is over,” he told the crowd at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

Conservatives are bracing for what they expect to be a bold halftime performance, featuring hits like “DTMF” and “Me Porto Bonito,” and perhaps some overt or subtle criticism of President Trump and his policies.

When Beyoncé strolled onto the field during halftime of Super Bowl 50 in 2016, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, a close ally of President Donald Trump, criticized her for alluding to Malcolm X and the Black Panther Party and calling it an “attack” on law enforcement.

H. Sammy Alim, an anthropology professor and faculty director of the UCLA Hip-Hop Initiative, said that opposition to future performances, particularly around language and identity, has become more pronounced because Bad Bunny encourages other Americans to “expand boundaries” that many find offensive.

“Bad Bunny represents that kind of linguistic threat,” Alim said. “He is a person of color who also plays with gender and sexuality in a way that is very inclusive of the queer community. In other words, he is seen as a threat to the United States as someone who has ties to many of the communities they have already built.”

He also has decided to skip all US stops on this year’s world tour due to concerns about ICE coming to his concerts. She kissed a male backup dancer on stage. In 2021, she wore a drag costume in the “Yo Pereo Sola” music video. And in 2022, she wore a skirt for her appearance on “The Tonight Show.”

Conservative political commentator Jeff Cruehl said the Super Bowl is an event that brings together much of the country. By featuring Bad Bunny and Green Day, a rock band that also has more liberal leanings, the NFL is sending a message to fans who support the president and those with more traditional values, he said.

“For many of us, it’s intolerable that they continue this trend,” Cruel said. “You see it in Hollywood. It goes on all the time with actors, and they make everything political and it just makes people uncomfortable.”

This caused a notable backlash, with over 100 petitions being started on Change.org opposing Bad Bunny’s performance. The most popular petition, with approximately 120,000 signatures, was calling for George Strait, known as the “King of Country Music,” to replace Bad Bunny.

While the website has previously hosted halftime-related petitions, Change.org spokesperson Kajal Odedra told USA TODAY that “the scale and cultural breadth of this petition is remarkable,” ranking it among the most responded to.

Liberals say conservatives are politicizing entertainment

A Quinnipiac University survey found that when asked last October about NFL selections, about 48% of Americans approved, 29% opposed, and the remaining 24% had no opinion.

Polls showed clear partisan divides, with about three-quarters of Democrats supporting the decision and nearly two-thirds of Republicans disapproving.

Bad Bunny’s defenders say his performance will demonstrate America’s diversity and make him a star beloved by a rapidly growing young audience. They point out that he is originally from Puerto Rico, which is part of the United States, and has become a global star by embracing his heritage.

“Like millions of Latinos, he is bilingual and extremely talented,” said Vanessa Cárdenas, executive director of America’s Voice, a liberal immigration reform group. “And like many immigrants who contribute to culture and music, he is an innovator.”

“This performance is only considered controversial because we have a president in the White House who seeks to divide the American people,” she added. “They made it OK for people to racially profile people of color, and they made it OK for people to express really anti-immigrant views.”

The poll also divided racial opinion, with 61% of black adults and 65% of Hispanic adults supporting that choice, compared to just 41% of white adults. But the decision was overwhelmingly supported by younger Americans between the ages of 18 and 34, with 64% saying they liked the choice, compared to a 50-50 split among people 65 and older.

David vs. Goliath: Conservatives bet on halftime alternative

Conservative activists are now planning another halftime show featuring performers friendly to President Trump.

Turning Point USA, an organization founded by the late conservative activist Charlie Kirk, announced this week the lineup for the All-American Halftime Show, which will feature performances from Kid Rock, Brantley Gilbert, Lee Brice and more.

Kid Rock, an ally of President Trump, said in a Feb. 2 news release that organizers are approaching the show “like David and Goliath.” He said Super Bowl headliners will “wear dresses and sing in Spanish,” but the show will feature “great songs for people who love America,” noting they are competing against the most powerful sports leagues and global pop superstars.

Allies and Adversaries have telegraphed that they intend to see how well the Turning Point USA event does in terms of viewership numbers.

“If they get a significant audience, I don’t know what those numbers will be, but maybe that will be a wake-up call for the NFL to try to go in a different direction with entertainment and do something less divisive,” Cruehl told USA TODAY.

While President Trump’s allies lean into fighting on the front lines of the culture wars, the administration appears to be backing down as the backlash over the shooting deaths of two Americans by federal agents in Minnesota boils over and culminates in confrontational protests at the Capitol.

League leaders announced at a Feb. 3 press conference that there would be no ICE or federal immigration enforcement enforcement at games, months after former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski and other Trump allies hinted at the possibility in an October 2025 podcast interview with conservative commentator Benny Johnson.

Louvre to restore Napoleon’s deformed crown after brazen robbery

0

play

Months after thieves abandoned Napoleon’s crown during a brazen daytime heist at the Louvre in Paris, newly released photos show the diamond- and emerald-encrusted headpiece has been severely deformed.

The crown of Empress Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III, who ruled France in the 19th century, has been discovered at the foot of the Louvre’s Apollo Museum, the museum announced in a February 4 news release. Balaclava-wearing thieves who broke into the Louvre in October and stole millions of French crown jewels dropped a gold crown.

Investigators have not yet located the eight pieces of jewelry, but were able to recover the crown and a palmetto fragment from the crown, which was found near the display case that housed it, the museum said. Now, more than three months after the theft, the Louvre has released the first photo of the crown.

The crown was damaged when the thieves tried to remove it from the glass display case through a narrow sawn hole, the museum said. The crown was shattered during the robbery and four palmettos were removed, the museum said.

According to the Louvre, about 10 of the 1,354 diamonds and one of the eight golden eagles that adorned the crown remain missing. But the museum said the headpiece is still largely intact and can be restored.

“Although the crown was catastrophically damaged and severely deformed, it remained in almost perfect condition and could be fully restored,” the museum said in a news release issued in French, adding that the restoration process would be overseen by a newly formed expert committee.

The Louvre, the world’s most visited museum, has been reeling since a major robbery and has come under intense scrutiny over security lapses. Some French officials called the incident a national humiliation.

How did the robbers get into the Louvre?

French officials said the robbery occurred at around 9:30 a.m. local time on October 19, as visitors rushed into the museum. The four suspects were driving a truck carrying an electric telescoping ladder and stopped on a road near the Seine River south of the Louvre Museum.

He then extended the ladder to the museum’s second-floor balcony. Officials said two suspects climbed onto the balcony while the other two remained in the truck. They used power tools to break through a window leading into the gilded Apollo Museum, where France’s treasures are on display.

Once inside, the suspect set off an alarm and broke a glass display case, snatching pieces of historic jewelry as museum staff evacuated panicked tourists, officials said. The robbery took place about 270 meters from the Mona Lisa painting.

The two suspects then climbed down the ladder and all four fled on two motorcycles, officials said. Paris prosecutor Laure Becuaux previously said the robbery appeared to be the work of a petty criminal rather than a professional.

A total of nine items were targeted by the criminals and eight were stolen. The thieves lost the ninth crown, Empress Eugenie’s crown, while on the run.

During the investigation, French authorities arrested several suspects, six of whom were later released, according to Reuters, the Guardian newspaper and radio network Ici, formerly known as France Bleu. The radio network reported on February 4 that four men have since been charged in the incident.

What jewels were stolen from the Louvre?

Eight pieces were taken from a partially matching set, museum officials said.

  • sapphire tiara: It was once owned by 19th-century French queens Marie Amélie and Hortense.
  • sapphire necklace: From the Marie Amélie and Hortense collection.
  • Single sapphire earrings: One of a pair from the Marie Amélie and Hortense collection.
  • emerald necklace: Worn by Empress Marie Louise, second wife of Napoleon Bonaparte.
  • emerald earrings: Matches the necklace from the Marie Louise collection.
  • Tiara: Worn by Empress Eugenie of Napoleon III.
  • Large body knot brooch: Also known as the “corsage ribbon brooch” from Empress Eugénie’s collection.
  • holy relic brooch: A brooch designed to display historical relics.

The jewelry is worth an estimated $102.63 million, Becuaux said. Experts previously told USA TODAY that the stolen jewelry may have been dismantled or melted down, making it difficult to trace the items to museums.

Louvre museum strengthens security

News of the robbery shocked the world and prompted criticism of the museum’s inadequate security and crumbling infrastructure. A report released by France’s official auditing body, known as the Cour des Comtes, said museums’ inability to update their infrastructure was exacerbated by excessive spending on art.

The Louvre’s director and curator, Laurence de Cal, previously admitted that the museum’s cameras failed to detect the robbery and that there were not enough outdoor cameras to monitor the museum’s surroundings. She added that outdoor surveillance cameras did not fully cover the museum’s facade, and the window where the robbers entered was not monitored by surveillance cameras.

In response to the robbery, French authorities announced that the Louvre Museum will install additional security measures on nearby public roads, including anti-intrusion devices and barriers to prevent vehicle collisions.

In November, the Louvre announced it would install 100 external cameras by the end of 2026 as part of measures to strengthen security. De Kaal said the museum would also establish a “sophisticated police station on the grounds of the Louvre.”

WASHINGTON – Vice President J.D. Vance recognized the sacrifices made by U.S. athletes to participate in the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy and encouraged them to “win as many medals as possible” ahead of the Milan-Cortina Games, which open on February 6.

“This is one of the few things that unites the whole country,” Vance, the U.S. delegation leader, told members competing in freestyle aerial and halfpipe competitions. “Everyone is rooting for you. Everyone is rooting for you.”

Vance added that although his wife, Usha, is not much of a sports fan, “every two years she makes us binge watch the Olympics. That’s been the case from the moment I started dating her.”

Mr. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are scheduled to attend the opening ceremony at the San Siro soccer stadium. Vance is also scheduled to meet with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on the same day, the vice president’s office said.

The Vances attended the International Olympic Committee dinner on February 5th. Earlier in the day, Mr. and Mrs. Vance attended with their children, Ewan, 8, and Ewan, 8. Vivek, 5 years old. Mirabel, 4, was there to watch a girls’ preliminary hockey game between Team USA and Team Czech Republic.

Other members of the U.S. delegation in the audience included Mr. and Mrs. Rubio and the U.S. Ambassador to Italy, Tom Fertitta, and his wife.

After Joy Dunn gave Team USA a 2-0 lead and a 5-1 victory, Vance joined the crowd in chanting “USA, USA, USA.” The fans gathered in the 5,800-seat Milano Rho Arena appeared to be oblivious to the politician.

Among the athletes named to the delegation by President Donald Trump are twins Jocelyn Lamoureux-Davidson and Monique Lamoureux-Morando, who played on the 2018 U.S. women’s hockey team and won a gold medal in South Korea. That team knocked Canada out of its 20-year reign as the top Olympic riser.

Other gold medal winners on the delegation include Apolo Ohno, who won short track speed skating in 2002 and 2006, and Evan Lysacek, who won figure skating in 2010. Ohno added a silver medal and several bronze medals to his trophy case in 2010, becoming America’s most decorated Winter Olympian.

In addition to Mr. Rubio, diplomats on the delegation include U.S. Ambassador to Italy Tilman Fertitta, a billionaire businessman who owns Landry’s restaurants, the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino and the Houston Rockets basketball team.

The Vance family arrived in Milan around 10 a.m. local time on February 5. Two members of the Carabinieri Guard of Honor, including Fertitta and Varese Governor Salvatore Pasquariello, flanked the red carpet welcome.

At the welcome center, the Vance children received credentials with lanyards and souvenir Ralph Lauren teddy bear Olympic pins.

Polar vortex forecasters say we should prepare for ‘the coldest air of the entire winter’

0

An unrelenting winter in the East in 2025-2026 is poised to trigger the cruellest cold wave outbreak yet.

play

This year’s unrelenting winter in the East is shaping up to be the most severe cold wave outbreak ever.

“More than 100 million people in the northeast of the country are awaiting a bitterly cold weekend as arctic air moves straight south from eastern Canada,” AccuWeather senior meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said in an online forecast.

AccuWeather predicts temperatures will drop into the single digits or below freezing in much of the Northeast. According to Weather.com, dozens of days of record cold air will be at risk on Saturday, February 7th and Sunday, February 8th.

“This weekend could bring the coldest air of the winter to the Northeast and mid-Atlantic,” Washington Post meteorologist Ben Knoll told X.

Extreme cold and ‘dangerous’ wind chill expected

“A significant Arctic outbreak will bring frigid temperatures and dangerously cold wind chills to the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic this weekend (February 7-8),” NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center forecast said.

The coldest air temperatures, in the -30s, are expected across the interior Northeast and across New England. Frigid daytime temperatures will struggle to rise above the teens or single digits.

Possibility of damage from squalls caused by wind and snow

Strong winds that could exceed 80 mph could worsen widespread, dangerous subzero temperatures, as well as cause isolated tree damage and power outages, the Weather Prediction Center said. This will most likely occur in the southern and central Appalachians, mid-Atlantic, and interior Northeast.

The arrival of colder air on Friday, February 6th and Saturday, February 7th may bring short periods of heavy snow, including squalls and blizzards.

Safety in cold regions

These wind chills pose a life-threatening risk of hypothermia and frostbite on exposed skin. Here’s what NOAA suggests:

  • If you travel, pack a cold weather survival kit.
  • Limit your time outdoors and cover exposed skin when you are outdoors.
  • Make sure your pets and livestock are well protected from the cold.
  • Take steps to prevent pipes from freezing and avoid walking on frozen bodies of water where the ice thickness is uncertain.

Is it a polar vortex?

Yes, the leaves of the polar vortex in the lower layers of the atmosphere (known as the “tropospheric polar vortex”) are responsible for this intense cold, Weather Trader noted meteorologist Ryan Maue said in an email to USA TODAY.

Is there any relief along the way?

Somewhat milder, or at least less cold, air is moving east, but Weather.com predicts it could take until late next week to arrive. The Japan Meteorological Prediction Center announced, “This cold weather is expected to dissipate by the middle of next week and a warming trend will begin.”

  • Stafford led the league with a career-high 46 touchdown passes and 4,707 passing yards.
  • This is Stafford’s first MVP award in his 17-year career.

SAN FRANCISCO – Matthew Stafford’s Amazing 17th The season was recognized in a big way.

The Los Angeles Rams quarterback was named NFL MVP at the NFL Honors Ceremony on February 5th. He defeated New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye by one first-place vote.

Stafford was named league MVP after capping off one of the best seasons of his career. The 37-year-old quarterback led the NFL with a career-high 46 touchdown passes to just eight interceptions, breaking the Rams’ franchise record. Additionally, Stafford’s 4,707 passing yards were an NFL pace.

His 46 touchdowns are the second-most in a season by an NFL quarterback over the age of 37. According to NFL Research, he became the third player in NFL history to record at least 45 touchdown passes and fewer than 10 interceptions in a season.

“He’s the MVP. There’s no ifs or buts about it,” Rams running back Blake Colm told USA TODAY Sports in a recent interview. “He had an incredible season. His career was just incredible.”

This is the first regular season MVP award for Stafford in his career. This is the highest honor Mr. Stafford has received this year. He was also named to the 2025 All-Pro First Team and to the Pro Bowl.

Stafford’s MVP status adds to a resume worthy of being in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Stafford helped the Rams win Super Bowl 56, won the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year Award in 2011, is a three-time Pro Bowler, a 2025 First-Team All-Pro, and is currently the 2025 NFL MVP.

Stafford was originally selected No. 1 overall in the 2009 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions. He is Detroit’s all-time passing leader and holds the franchise record for passing touchdowns. Stafford was traded to the Rams in the 2021 blockbuster trade with the Lions. Stafford won a Super Bowl title as the Rams’ quarterback in his first season in Los Angeles. He also won the MVP in his fifth year in LA.

“He’s elevated everyone around him, which was really impressive,” Rams coach Sean McVay said. “But I wouldn’t say I’m surprised. This has been consistent for him in the five years we’ve been together. I’m just grateful to have had the opportunity to partner with him.”

Lack of cameras complicates search in Guthrie’s dark neighborhood

0

“We are asking everyone to check their security cameras and doorbell cameras, especially after 8pm on Saturday nights.”

TUCSON, Ariz. – It’s just after 7 p.m. It’s already dark in the Catalina Mountains, not far from where authorities say “Today” show co-host Savannah Guthrie’s mother was kidnapped.

There are no street lights. No one walks down the dark residential street, winding past the subdued lights of the adobe walls of luxury homes, surrounded by mesquite trees that perfume the desert air. And above the dark silhouettes of giant saguaros lies a sky with unobstructed light.

The rural nature of the area, a famously dark-sky region, may have helped mask the alleged kidnapping for ransom of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, who is in her 80s, on January 31st.

Still, the home had multiple security cameras and more than a dozen outdoor light fixtures. Other homes in the area also had cameras installed. However, despite continued efforts, so far no camera footage has led police to identify the vehicle or the suspect, authorities announced on February 5th.

With everything from home surveillance cameras to license plate reading technology to biometric facial recognition seemingly everywhere in America, how can a potential kidnapper get away without being seen?

“We ask everyone to check their security cameras and doorbells, especially after 8 p.m. on Saturday nights,” the Catalina Foothills Association said in a Feb. 2 email to residents obtained by USA TODAY. “Your help could make a difference.”

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said investigators continue to work door-to-door collecting and analyzing video from residents and businesses. But it’s happening in areas with fewer cameras and less light than in urban areas.

“Living in such a rural area, we face these challenges all the time,” Nanos said, adding that even though the cameras “might only capture part of what’s going by. They can’t capture the whole car. That kind of thing. We’re not going to give up.”

Security cameras in Guthrie’s home are also being scrutinized. Nanos said multiple cameras were installed on the premises. Officials said Thursday that the doorbell camera at her home was disconnected at 1:47 a.m. Camera software recorded motion at 2:12 a.m.

However, it was not recorded because Guthrie did not have a subscription agreement.

“Was it an animal? I think that’s a possibility,” Nanos said. “We don’t know that.”

The blood found on the balcony of Nancy Guthrie’s home has been confirmed to be hers, the sheriff said. “The only DNA evidence we recovered was on the balcony,” he said. “We learned the importance of that blood. It came back to Nancy.”

Authorities believe Nancy Guthrie was taken from her home “against her will” after going to her parents’ home on game night. The next day, her family began to worry when she did not come to church.

  • January 31st 5:32pm Guthrie traveled to his family’s home for the night of the game.
  • January 31st 9:48pm When her family dropped her off at home, the garage door opened.
  • January 31st 9:50pm The garage door is closed.
  • February 1st 1:47am The doorbell camera in front of Guthrie’s home was disconnected.
  • February 1st 2:12am The smart home software has detected a person on the camera, but video is not available.
  • February 1st 2:28am Guthrie’s pacemaker app shows it has been disconnected from her phone.
  • February 1st 11:56am Her family is checking on her.
  • February 1st 12:03pm Her family called 9-1-1 to report her missing.
  • February 1st 12:15pm A police car arrives.

Authorities are currently offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to her discovery.

FBI Special Agent Heiss Janke confirmed Thursday that the ransom demand letter, which seeks “monetary value,” has two deadlines: Feb. 5 and Feb. 9. Officials reiterated that she needed medication daily.

“They know that every minute counts. If anyone who may have Nancy sees this, the family is ready to talk and get proof that she’s alive, because they haven’t been able to contact her since the ransom note was leaked to the media,” he said at a news conference.

As the investigation continues, some rural neighbors say they understand why the characteristics of the area make it difficult to quickly find video evidence to identify a suspect.

The foothills of Mt. Catalina are very dark.

For one thing, it’s dark. It’s very dark.

In 2023, Saguaro National Park in Pima County was recognized as an Urban Night Sky Location. The area also has property lighting codes that include outdoor light screening. It is primarily seen as a comfort and not a problem.

“People love the night sky, the sky is full, and there are no street lights because astronomy is a big part of Tucson’s economy,” said Tom Pugh, director of the Catalina Foothills Association.

Residents enjoy starry skies and a natural rocky landscape of black-barked mesquite trees dotted with bobcats and javelinas, he said.

Mary Wombat, 65, who has lived in the neighborhood for 50 years, said a black bear was seen on security cameras three times near her home. One time it was just after sunrise. As for the other two, she said the bears got close enough to trip over the lights and cameras.

“This is our countryside,” Wombat said.

It’s pitch black at night, so dog walks are done in the light. Or bring a flashlight if you need it, said Karen Lane, 44, who lives nearby.

Some residents noted that crime is usually low in hilly areas and the area has long felt safe.

USA TODAY analyzed photos and video from the scene and found that Guthrie’s home had at least 14 outdoor light fixtures, including floodlights near the garage and outside the building. It is unclear which of them was present the night she disappeared.

These are in addition to multiple cameras cited by investigators.

Camara footage won’t help Guthrie investigation

Resident Chris Wilkie, 50, wasn’t surprised that cameras in the area weren’t as useful as some people thought.

“It’s going to be difficult to pick up vehicles that are leaving the scene using doorbells, Ring, etc.,” he said.

Doorbell cameras often use infrared light to illuminate the night scene, but many can reach only 15 to 30 feet, making them bad at identifying long-range details at night, according to PCWorld.

Russell Long, a real estate agent who lives near Guthrie, said three law enforcement officers came to his home Wednesday and asked him about his security cameras and if they had cameras facing the street.

Long said many homes sit on lots of at least an acre, and the lots are surrounded by plants such as saguaro cacti, palo verde and mesquite trees. Houses hidden in desert landscapes or long driveways can make it difficult to see activity from the road.

“Even if there were cameras, they wouldn’t show much,” Long said.

Long said more people in his neighborhood have burglar alarm systems than camera systems.

The Guthrie incident requires a rethink of security, including Willkie. But Long said he considers Guthrie’s disappearance an “extraordinary situation” in the Catalina foothills.

“I think most people probably feel that this was a targeted situation, not a random attack,” he said.

Nanos said his team could not determine whether Guthrie was the target of a crime. “We’ll learn more about what the motive is as the investigation progresses, but for now my guess is as accurate as yours,” he said.

The FBI and local law enforcement authorities are currently examining various digital evidence, including night camera footage, in hopes of closing the case. Officials still hope they can find a way to glean information from unrecorded camera detections at the Guthrie residence.

Authorities had already determined that one ransom demand was fake. On February 5, a California man, Derrick Cajera, was arrested on two charges for allegedly sending false requests to Nancy Guthrie’s family, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona announced.

But both investigators and Guthrie’s neighbors know time is running out. By 5pm on February 5th, another ransom note’s initial deadline had passed.

For now, investigators and the Guthrie family remain in the dark.

2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame Class Announced

  • Drew Brees and Larry Fitzgerald were inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in their first year of eligibility.
  • The Class of 2026 also includes Adam Vinatieri, Luke Kuechly, and Roger Craig.
  • Former 49ers running back Roger Craig has been named a senior finalist after waiting 28 years.
  • Coach Bill Belichick and contributor Robert Kraft were not selected for this year’s Hall of Fame induction.

SAN FRANCISCO – No more surprises. It’s official.

Drew Brees and Larry Fitzgerald were first-ballot Hall of Famers.

Leaks in recent days have revealed that Bill Belichick and Robert Kraft are surprisingly snubbed, and Brees and Fitzgerald, who rank second all-time in career passing and receiving yards, respectively, have been named to headline the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s 2026 class to be announced at the NFL Honors Show on February 5th at the Palace of Fine Arts.

Adam Vinatieri, Luke Cookley and Roger Craig also headed to Canton.

The five members will be enshrined in a ceremony at the Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, on August 8.

49ers legend Roger Craig ends 28-year wait to be inducted into the Hall of Fame

While most of the class entered selection relatively early, Vinatieri and Kukree were selected in just their second year of eligibility, while Craig finally received his hall call after waiting 28 years.

The former San Francisco 49ers running back, who became the first player in NFL history to have 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season, was inducted into the Hall of Fame as one of three finalists in the senior division.

Vinatieri, on the other hand, entered as the fifth kicker, but became perhaps the most clutch kicker of all time. During his 24-year career, he was the leading scorer for two franchises, helped the New England Patriots win three Super Bowls, and then won another ring with the Indianapolis Colts.

Kuechly, who played his entire eight-year career with the Carolina Panthers, topped 100 tackles in each season and had more interceptions (18) than any inside linebacker during that span.

Brees, who led the New Orleans Saints to the Super Bowl 44 MVP award, is the third QB to be selected in the past 10 years and the first since Peyton Manning in 2021. His 80,358 passing yards and 571 TDs during his 20-year career, with five 5,000-yard seasons, are big numbers that go a long way in measuring his impact.

The same can be said for Fitzgerald, who spent his entire 17-year career with the Arizona Cardinals. Fitzgerald’s career records include 1,432 receptions and 17,492 receiving yards, a total surpassed only by Jerry Rice.

Patriots’ Bill Belichick and Robert Kraft will have to wait another year

Again, high performance is only part of the equation when it comes to getting a hole call. Belichick led the Patriots to six Super Bowls and is the second-leading coach of all-time with 333 wins, but he still has to wait to be named a finalist in the coaching category as he did not receive 80% of the votes.

Belichick’s selection follows Mike Holmgren and Buddy Parker, marking the third year in a row that no final manager candidate was selected by the selection committee.

Kraft made a record 11th appearance in the Super Bowl, but was unable to advance as a contributor.

Belichick and Kraft could be finalists again next year if they are selected again by the coaches and contributors subcommittee. stay tuned.

  • The Nissan Leaf was named the Best Car of 2026 by Cars.com due to its affordability and features.
  • Cars.com’s annual awards highlight vehicles that offer value and ease of use as affordability becomes a primary concern for shoppers.
  • Other winners include the Nissan Armada for Best SUV, the Hyundai Santa Fe for Best Family Car, and the Ram 1500 for Best Pickup Truck.

Sales of electric cars have declined since the $7,500 federal tax credit was repealed, but one plug-in model was named the best car of 2026 by the website Cars.com.

The site said the Nissan Leaf is the best car of 2026 due to its affordable price, range, flexible charging options and design.

Mike Hanley, senior road test editor at Cars.com, said in a statement that the Nissan Leaf is “perhaps a surprising choice as the EV market realigns following the repeal of the federal tax credit, but at a time when many shoppers believe affordable EVs are out of reach, the redesigned Leaf proves that value, innovation and everyday usability can still coexist.”

Cars.com said the Leaf and other 2026 Best of winners “reflect car shoppers becoming more selective as affordability remains a top priority and there are fewer budget-friendly used options available.”

Amazon pulls ‘Melania’ doc from Oregon theater over marquee joke

A movie theater in northwestern Oregon announced it had stopped showing the new “Melania” movie after Amazon presented its own movie description on the marquee.

The Lake Theater & Café in Lake Oswego, 13 miles south of Portland, is known for having witty and creative movie descriptions written on its marquee, and the movie “Melania” was no exception.

In the case of a documentary centered on first lady Melania Trump, a sign at a local business read, “Is Melania Wearing Prada? Find out on Friday,” and, quoting Sun Tzu’s The Art of War, “To defeat your enemy, you must know your enemy. Melania starts on Friday.”

In an Instagram post on Feb. 2, the theater said it had been contacted by Amazon/MGM Studios, saying they were “upset with the way our big name company is selling the film,” and that the tech giant had decided not to show the film after Sunday, Feb. 8.

The marquee was later updated to read, “Please Amazon call the marquee to be upset about all of Melania’s shows being canceled and show your support at Whole Foods instead :(.”

Lake Theater & Cafe also wrote that it had received “countless emails, voicemails, and Google/Yelp reviews (which Google/Yelp has deleted) asking why we invited Melania here and disparaging us for disrespecting her.”

“It ended prematurely, but it wasn’t the public outcry (thank you for always listening) that turned the spigot on us, but corporate executives (of course, AMZN, sorry, don’t cancel Prime),” they continued in the caption.

USA TODAY has reached out to Amazon, Google and Yelp for comment.

Theater manager “willing” to exclude Amazon

Theater manager Jordan Perry said he has no hard feelings toward the studio after Amazon MGM told movie bookers they wanted the documentary “off the screen” because of its famous description. “We were happy to comply because showing this film did not seem to be acceptable to many in the local community, or at least some of our patrons,” Perry told USA TODAY in an emailed statement.

“While I personally don’t want to contribute to the left-right discourse by having an opinion, voting, or having conversations with those around me, I enjoy art and nature, and I encourage those who aren’t actively involved in bringing about change, or at least not actively involved in bringing about change, to do the same. We are what we eat,” Perry added.

Following the blackout by some moviegoers, Perry explained the decision to show the film on the theater’s website and disputed claims that screening the film supports the first lady, the Trump administration or their policies. “The canopy may seem mean, but my hope is that while temporarily fanning the flames, it will ultimately lower the temperature,” he wrote.

He wrote that an $11 ticket to screen the film would only give the “movie company currently owned by Jeff Bezos” $5.50.

“Many people now call it propaganda, but that word never occurred to me. While there are certainly deliberate blind spots in the movie, this is ‘Melania’ as Melania wants to be known, and not everyone will be happy about that,” he wrote.

in spite of fierce backlash “Melania” received poor reviews from critics. Box office hit, grossing $7 million in opening weekend, according to estimates released by Amazon MGM StuDios on February 1st.

Bitcoin is almost untraceable. Criminals like that.

Amid the ongoing search for Today co-host Savannah Guthrie’s mother, Nancy Guthrie, TMZ and the CBS News affiliate in Arizona have reported that they have received demands for millions of dollars in Bitcoin for her release.

TMZ said the memo requested millions in Bitcoin cryptocurrency and provided specific Bitcoin addresses. The outlet reported that it had confirmed the validity of the address.

While law enforcement authorities continue to evaluate the memo’s effectiveness, some Americans may wonder whether a Bitcoin address is enough to find the culprit, or at least narrow the search for the kidnapper.

It’s not that simple. Here’s what you need to know about Bitcoin.

How do Bitcoin transactions work?

When someone establishes a Bitcoin wallet with a private key that makes the wallet unique to that user, an initial Bitcoin address is generated that can send and receive Bitcoins. Users can create more addresses.

This is much like an email address that someone uses to communicate with another person, except that each Bitcoin address only needs to be used once. According to Bitcoin.org, an open-source, community-driven website that provides Bitcoin education, each transaction must use a unique Bitcoin address to increase privacy.

Different addresses hide or disperse transactions, making it difficult to link them to a single person. People can use the same address, but you’ll see the pattern of money going in and out of that address.

Knowing a transaction’s address still does not reveal its owner, since the address is pseudonymous and not attached to an email, phone number, or address. To dig deeper you will need more sophisticated tools.

Why would you choose to receive your ransom in Bitcoin?

“Criminals demand ransom payments in cryptocurrencies because they are fast, efficient, and make it easy to verify if and when payments have been made,” Angelena Bradfield and Stephanie Wake of banking advocacy group BPI wrote in 2021.

According to Bitcoin.org, the features of Bitcoin that criminals may like are:

  • It is difficult to trace the identity of individuals in Bitcoin transactions. Bitcoin does not require an ID to use, and the trading software can be installed by anyone in the world.
  • Using different addresses and possibly different wallets each time for different purposes isolates each transaction and makes it difficult to link them to a single individual.
  • Transactions are quick, cheap, irreversible (like cash), and can be made 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, 365 days a year.
  • IP addresses (similar to street numbers on Internet devices) can hide a person’s location from easy identification.

Will investigators be able to find the owner of the Bitcoin address?

Ken Gray, a professor at the University of New Haven’s School of Criminal Justice and Criminology and a former FBI agent, said finding the owner of a Bitcoin address is nearly impossible.

“Cryptocurrencies are untraceable,” Gray said. “It’s outside the banking system and you can’t find the owner. That’s why it’s the currency of choice for criminals.”

“Nobody wants to carry around a big suitcase full of cash,” Gray said, because funds sent through PayPal or Venmo can be tracked. “Cryptocurrency is a modern way of transporting large amounts of money,” it quietly states.

What about the story of virtual currency recovery by investigators?

There are numerous stories of investigators recovering billions of dollars in cryptocurrencies. But Gray said such cases typically begin by tracking a person through physical means, such as email or phone calls, and directing them to cryptocurrencies.

In Guthrie’s case, an investigation could begin with a ransom note received by media outlets, he said. Investigators may try to trace the emails. If the criminal is a professional, he or she may have used anonymous email that traverses multiple networks to reach the recipient. This may make tracking more difficult, but the FBI may exploit vulnerabilities.

As for the code itself, “it doesn’t connect you to the person requesting it,” Gray said.

Lee Jun-ho talks about Netflix’s “Cachero” and “Typhoon Family” serial hits

0

For Korean actor Lee Jun-ho, the story of the project is the most important element when taking on a new role.

“As the narrator who drives the story, I sometimes make choices based on how the overall message gets across,” the 36-year-old told USA TODAY.

This emphasis on storytelling has led Lee to star in a number of award-winning Korean dramas, including globally recognized King the Land and Typhoon Family, both of which dominated the global Netflix streaming charts.

But another driving force behind Lee’s acting is his ability to immerse himself and challenge himself. Lee has played everything from a Joseon Dynasty king to a rookie CEO to an ordinary person turned superhero.

Lee’s two most recent projects, “Typhoon Family” and Netflix Korea’s “Kashero,” have been some of his most interesting roles to date, he says.

“When I worked on the dramas “Red Sleeve” and “King the Land,” I played characters like kings and kings. Zaibatsu (A wealthy heiress), but the characters in “Typhoon Family” and “Cachero” were in situations that I was personally drawn to,” Lee explains.

Casiero becomes a normal superhero.”

“Cachero” is Netflix’s first Korean original superhero production, which is what attracted Lee to the project, he said.

“We felt that[Cachero]had a differentiating quality that set it apart from the various superhero stories that we’re all familiar with,” Lee explains. “What definitely caught my attention was the fact that[the show]doesn’t just use superpowers, but you actually have to pay a price to use them.”

“Cachero” tells the story of Kang Sang-woong, an ordinary civil servant who discovers that he has supernatural powers, but there are caveats to his abilities.

“In order to fully immerse myself in the character of Sang-woong, I had to keep believing that I had superpowers and that if I wanted to use them, I could only use them based on the amount of cash I had,” Lee says. “In some ways, this was probably the most unrealistic character I’ve ever played.”

Being this “everyday type of hero” appealed to Lee, and he says performing the various action sequences, such as flying and throwing heavy stones, was more fun than exhausting.

But beyond the intense and fantastical themes, the real heart of “Cachero” lies in its message.

“I think it’s an opportunity for viewers to feel what it’s like to be a Korean-made, everyday K-hero with a different vibe than the more commonly known Marvel and DC superhero stories,” Lee explains. “But there’s also a really important key point that’s being addressed in this series, which in a way is something that’s mentioned in every superhero story, and it’s also mentioned in Spider-Man: ‘With great power comes great responsibility.'”

“Typhoon Family” and the importance of authentic storytelling

Before “Cachero,” Lee starred in another hit series, “Typhoon Family.” The 2025 Korean drama depicts Kang Tae-poon’s struggles and growth after a family tragedy during the 1997 Asian financial crisis.

“In the case of ‘Typhoon Family,’ it depicts how our country, South Korea, experienced the hardships of the IMF era and how we overcame it,” Lee says. “In a sense, people around the world are still experiencing similar difficulties, and I think this is an important theme of how to overcome them together with those around you.”

Lee Lee, who played the troubled Tae Poong, won the Best Actor Award (TV Category) at the 2025 Asian Artist Awards.

Lee said it was very important to portray realistic characters, and the hardships Tae-poong faced in “Typhoon Family” were a powerful story to share.

“I really wanted to tell a story about people who endure that kind of pain and ultimately overcome it,” he says. “I think the greatest strength of this drama is that it gives us the opportunity to look back on a historical period that we have never experienced before through television.

“By portraying these realistic figures, we provide a meaningful opportunity to think about how to overcome the economic (cultural) difficulties facing modern society.”

Looking back on Lee’s career

Lee has been active in the entertainment world for nearly 20 years as an actor, solo artist and member of the boy group 2PM, but he says the media landscape has changed a lot.

“Compared to when I debuted, the influence of global platforms has become much greater. Within the scope of K-content, we have K-pop, K-movies, K-dramas, and I think all of these combined and the fact that this content can more easily reach overseas fans and viewers through these platforms has created a positive impact,” he says.

“Now, I feel that all the years of hard work and effort have paid off, and as a Korean, I am very proud that viewers all over the world can easily watch our dramas.”

Lee hopes to continue taking on new roles in the future. “I’m always looking for the next project, especially new characters and new dramas that I haven’t played before,” he added.

Lee is set to star in the upcoming third installment of the “Veteran” film series, where he will play a new archetype. “I’ve never played a villain before, so I’m really excited and looking forward to the challenge,” he says.
