Who is Mitch McConnell’s wife? What you need to know about Elaine Chao

0

play

Sen. Mitch McConnell has been hospitalized for nearly four weeks, raising questions and concerns about the longtime Kentucky senator’s health.

Just days after his hospitalization began on June 14, his wife, former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao, was photographed with Vice President Han Zheng in China, drawing scrutiny from some who questioned the timing of her trip.

Mr. Chao, 73, had a distinguished career in the Cabinet under two Republican presidents and has been married to Mr. McConnell for more than 30 years. Here’s what you need to know about her.

Who is Mitch McConnell’s wife, Elaine Chao?

Chao moved with her family from Taiwan to Queens, New York, when she was 8 years old. Her father, James SC Chao, founded the American shipping company Foremost Group, which was run by her sister Angela until his death in 2024.

Chao became a U.S. citizen at age 19 and later graduated from Mount Holyoke and Harvard Business School.

She married McConnell in 1993. In 2009, they established the U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell and Secretary Elaine L. Chao Archives at the University of Louisville, which will be expanded in 2025.

Elaine Chao’s political career

Mr. Chao became the first Asian American cabinet member in 2001 and served as Secretary of Labor under President George W. Bush until the end of his term in 2009. In 2017, he was appointed U.S. Secretary of Transportation during President Donald Trump’s first term, making him one of the few people in history to serve in multiple cabinet positions.

On January 7, 2021, Chao resigned following the January 6 attack on the Capitol, saying he was “deeply troubled” by the “traumatic and completely avoidable events.” At the time, Chao was the highest-ranking member of the government to resign, and the first cabinet member to do so.

In March 2021, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Office of Inspector General released a report finding that Chao may have committed ethics violations while he was secretary, and suggested criminal prosecution. The Justice Department did not pursue the case.

In addition to his work in the White House, Chao served as president and CEO of the United Way of America, director of the Peace Corps, deputy secretary of transportation, and chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission.

Ethnic conflicts and relations with China

Throughout his relationship with McConnell and his time as transportation secretary, Chao has been the target of xenophobic rhetoric, racism and conspiracies surrounding his Taiwanese heritage.

In 2022, Trump repeatedly made racist comments about Chao on “Truth Social,” drawing intense criticism from many on the right.

“When I was younger, some people would intentionally misspell or mispronounce my name,” Chao said in a statement to USA TODAY at the time. “Asian Americans have worked hard to change that experience for the next generation. He doesn’t seem to understand that, but that says a lot more about him than anything about Asian Americans.”

The president’s anti-immigrant and xenophobic comments have also drawn a rare rejection from McConnell.

Foremost Group, run by Chao’s family, is a U.S. company with significant business dealings with China, which has drawn scrutiny from both the left and the right, where Chao has been accused of using his position as transportation secretary to enrich his family’s company. Trump has consistently accused Chao and his surrogate, McConnell, of loyalty to China and trying to “make money in China.”

Gunshot detectors continue to cause controversy and privacy concerns

0

Some local governments say gunshot detection systems allow police to respond quickly to shootings. But after backlash, some cities stopped using the technology.

play

When gunshots ring out on an American street, bystanders are instantly faced with a high-stakes dilemma.

Should I call the police? Was that a gunshot too? (Maybe it was just fireworks.)

A moment’s hesitation risks delaying treatment or giving the suspect time to flee. But a high-tech solution to the problem has sparked new controversy in cities across the country.

Law enforcement officials in states including New York, Georgia, California, Michigan and Virginia have credited some systems with helping make arrests and alerting them to shootings that would otherwise go unreported.

The system is part of an arsenal that police surveillance technology advocates warn is similar to license plate readers, a network of audio sensors designed to record gunshots and tell authorities where they were fired.

That’s where the problems begin.

This technology faces many controversies, including concerns about privacy and eavesdropping. Complaints about accuracy. There are even reports of many devices being installed in the wrong locations.

Officials in San Jose, California, and Champaign, Illinois, stopped using the system after the company found it was far worse at detecting gunshots than it had claimed. In Jackson, Mississippi, some devices were installed on private property without the owner’s consent and left despite the city’s request to remove them. In Roanoke, Virginia, the city removed detectors after a failed deployment worried residents.

One of these devices was accidentally placed in Caitlin Bourne’s yard where her children were playing.

“I think everyone should have the right to privacy in their own home, and it makes you feel really vulnerable when you don’t know if someone is listening all the time,” Vaughan said. “You don’t have to be doing something wrong to want to have a private space.”

Do gunshot detectors detect more than just gunshots?

Companies that develop gunfire detection technology, such as Flock Safety, said their systems are designed to listen for gunshots, not private conversations. A 2019 privacy assessment of Flock competitor ShotSpotter (now known as SoundThinking) by the New York University School of Law’s Police Project found that “the risks of audio surveillance are actually very low.”

Flock spokeswoman Paris Rubel told USA TODAY that the device “is not a continuous recording device, does not monitor conversations, and cannot be used to intercept private communications.” Rubel said these devices work like Amazon Alexa and only start recording when they hear a “public safety event.”

Ethan Ambabbo, Flock’s former principal product manager, gave a slightly different explanation of the technology in a 2023 webinar for prospective customers posted on the company’s website. The devices record five-second snippets of audio, use machine learning models to analyze the clips and send them to the cloud, Ambabbo said, and alert law enforcement if they contain gunshots.

Mr. Ambabbo acknowledged that the device had captured what sounded like gunshots and parts of conversations, but that it was “very rare.”

“This device does not stream audio,” he said. “The other thing is, this device can’t even be turned on remotely and stream audio, so if someone just goes and sits and listens, they can’t hear the conversation there in any meaningful way.”

Flock’s announcement that it was eliminating the ability to detect sounds of “human suffering” in addition to gunshots raised further concerns among advocates, including Matthew Guariglia, senior policy analyst at the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

“It’s unclear how this technology would be legal, given that many states have laws against wiretapping and recording people’s conversations without their knowledge,” Guariglia said.

As the mother of two preschoolers who she said were likely neurodivergent, Vaughn was concerned that the distress feature could cause unnecessary intrusion by law enforcement.

“They’re both screaming all the time, when they’re happy, when they’re sad, when they’re angry…Will my children just playing outside be recorded and stored somewhere in the police station?” she said.

Rubel said distress detection is no longer a feature of Flock’s system, but declined to answer questions about how that decision was reached or whether it had ever been used by law enforcement.

Does gunshot detection technology work?

Gunshot detection technology and the controversy surrounding it are not new.

SoundThinking claims to have established gunshot detection technology over 25 years ago. Police in several states, including Illinois, Ohio, North Carolina and Texas, have recently refrained from using the technology, the Columbus Dispatch, part of the USA TODAY Network, previously reported.

Flock’s gunshot detection system debuted in 2022, and several law enforcement officials have credited the technology with helping track suspects and uncovering a higher rate of shootings than previously known. Flock said its device can pinpoint the location of gunshots within 90 feet and has 90% accuracy.

But nine months after starting a pilot program, police in Champaign, Illinois, found that only 8 percent of the alerts generated by Raven resulted in officers finding the scene of an apparent shooting. Police said most of the unfounded warnings were fireworks. Police spokesman Joe Lamberson said the system was decommissioned after a year-long trial.

According to a May 2024 report from the city’s Office of Digital Privacy, the San Jose Police Department found that the accuracy of its Flock devices rose from about 50% during the first few months of the pilot program to 80% after recalibration. Although the device was able to detect gunshots that were not reported through other channels, it also recorded dozens of false positives (sounds classified as non-gunshots by human judges) and failed to detect gunshots directly below where the sensor was located, the report found.

In a statement to USA TODAY, the department said, “Raven did not meet the agency’s accuracy expectations and was removed from the City of San Jose following a report.”

Privacy concerns weigh on local governments

The technology can be very divisive, with one survey in Portland, Oregon, finding that about 48% of residents supported the city’s use of the device in their neighborhoods, while 51% opposed it. The results led city leaders to abandon plans to implement the technology, said Chris Henning, a professor at Portland State University who conducted the study.

Almost 80% of Portland respondents expressed some level of concern about privacy. Henning said concerns surrounding this and other surveillance technologies appear to stem from a deepening mistrust of law enforcement, which, if addressed, could help solve the problem of gunshot underreporting.

“The more important question is: Can we trust this company? Can we trust the government with this data?” he said. “In a broader sense, this doesn’t really mean me and them spying on me, it’s just a general sense of government infiltration.”

Similar concerns have arisen in other cities where Flock’s gunshot detection technology has been installed. Residents of Pontiac, Michigan, voiced these concerns at a June 17 City Council meeting, the Detroit News reported.

“Personally, I don’t think we can trust what they’re doing with our data and information,” Destiny Ingram said, according to the report.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office used the Raven in the city for six months as part of a free trial program, the Detroit News reported. As of May 8, shooting data had been used in nine cases, including murder, attempted murder, and felon in possession of a firearm, the outlet reported, citing law enforcement officials.

Despite residents’ concerns, the City Council voted to renew the contract for two years and $72,000, the Detroit News reported.

“When a tragedy occurs, it’s our responsibility to solve the problem, not just answer philosophical questions,” Mayor Mike McGuinness said, referring to the balance between public safety and the right to privacy, according to the newspaper.

Deployment is stopped due to rollout failure

In at least two cities, problems with Flock’s gunshot detection technology began before the system was in use. Tommy Brown, a spokesman for the Jackson, Mississippi, Police Department, told USA TODAY that Flock placed some of Raven’s devices on private property without the knowledge or permission of police or the property owner.

“Additionally, despite the city’s request to remove the equipment in 2025, Flock has yet to retrieve the equipment,” Brown said. “In late June 2026, Flock Safety notified the City that analysis related to the acoustic sensors was operating within an approximately 0.5 square mile area where the equipment was located, even though JPD had never activated or used the system.”

Roanoke City Manager Valmarie Turner said the Raven device was being removed and the deployment halted following a “preventable failure of the city’s process.”

Turner said the list of sensor locations approved by the City Council in April included misspelled and inaccurate addresses due to “data entry errors.” The ordinance allowing the installation was repealed on July 6th.

Cardinal News reported that at least 30 devices were installed in the wrong locations. City officials did not respond to requests from USA TODAY for more information about the multiple failed deployments.

“We know that flocking is a big issue, but we don’t necessarily want to give the impression that we’re participating in this national flocking discussion when that’s not really the issue,” city spokeswoman Jenelle Few said in a brief phone interview. “This is about a clerical input error on the city’s part.”

Vaughn said she’s glad the device near her home was removed quickly, but after learning more about the flock, she doesn’t want to install it anywhere else in Roanoke.

“The more I looked at it, the more chill I got,” Vaughn said. “Especially the lack of transparency.”

US Democrat Ro Khanna arrested by Israeli settlers in West Bank

0

TURMS AYA, WEST BANK – U.S. Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna, who said he was detained by Israeli settlers armed with a U.S.-made rifle during a visit to the West Bank this week, has openly reflected on the human cost of the Israeli occupation as he considers running for president in 2028.

Speaking to Reuters from a Palestinian village on July 9, Khanna said his group’s van was surrounded by settlers with M4 rifles the previous day while sightseeing in a part of the southern West Bank where residents frequently face attacks from settlers.

“We were in a village that the Israeli settlers had destroyed, destroyed the school, destroyed the village, and we just watched,” said Khanna, a California progressive and congressman.

“Then these thugs come with machine guns – American-made M4 machine guns – and detain us. They block the roads. And they call the[Israel Defense Forces]and the IDF is on their side, not on the Americans’ side,” Khanna said.

Khanna’s aide Cameron Kasky, who was part of the group, said they were held for more than an hour before seeking help from the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem. Kasky said a group of officers, believed to be police, eventually intervened and released him.

The Israeli military said its military and police officers intervened after reports that settlers were blocking vehicles near Khirbet Zanuta, a small Palestinian settlement whose residents were forcibly displaced by violent settler raids after Hamas attacked Israel in 2023.

“Upon arrival, the military dispersed the Israeli civilians and allowed the vehicles to proceed,” the military said.

Israeli police and the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Democratic Party split over Israel’s actions

Khanna is the second Democratic lawmaker the White House is considering visiting the region this week. In Tel Aviv on July 8, Rahm Emanuel, former President Barack Obama’s chief of staff, said Israel’s policies toward the Palestinians were undermining support for the U.S.-Israel alliance.

When asked if he would run for president, Khanna said, “I am strongly considering it, and after this visit I am even more determined to consider it.”

Israel’s actions against the Palestinians have emerged as a flashpoint in Democratic politics ahead of November’s U.S. midterm elections, contributing to the primary defeats of some incumbent lawmakers who were targeted by left-wing challengers who accused them of supporting Israel’s right-wing government.

Israel’s favorability ratings among Democrats fell from 59% in 2018 to 22% in May, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll.

Israel has long enjoyed strong bipartisan support in the United States, but a growing number of Democrats in Congress are now calling for an end to military aid. Military aid, amounting to $3.8 billion annually, includes funding for light weapons such as the M4 rifle and anti-missile equipment used by Israel in the Iran war.

Looking out over a valley dotted with settler outposts on the outskirts of Tulums Aiya, a village home to thousands of dual Palestinian-American citizens, Khanna said he believed the party’s establishment was “ignorant about what a moral test Palestine, Gaza and Israel are.”

He said he decided to visit only the West Bank on a Palestinian-led program to see the territory Israel captured in the 1967 Middle East war as it was.

“If you’re not willing to speak out for Palestinian human rights, if you’re not willing to speak out against genocide in Gaza, against apartheid in the West Bank, then you’re morally compromised,” Khanna said.

Israel denies claims that it committed genocide in Gaza or instituted an apartheid regime in the West Bank, home to some 3 million Palestinians and 500,000 Jewish settlers.

Most countries and the United Nations consider Israeli settlements in the West Bank to be illegal under international law, citing the Fourth Geneva Convention’s prohibition on the transfer of civilians to occupied territory.

Israel rejects that position and maintains that the West Bank is a disputed territory where there has been a Jewish presence for thousands of years. Palestinians consider the West Bank, along with Gaza and East Jerusalem, part of the Palestinian state.

Support among Republicans remains strong, but some in President Donald Trump’s coalition have also called for an end to aid.

What would Dr. Seuss do? Inside his complicated legacy

0

play

SAN DIEGO – In the fall of 1989, Kathy Goldsmith flew from New York City to San Diego and slept in Theodor Geisel’s guest room. Geisel was frail and had grown a beard to hide the effects of surgery for oral cancer. His wife Audrey was worried that he would not live to finish his current project. Goldsmith, a longtime art director, came to get “Oh, The Places You’ll Go!” Cross the finish line.

Every day, she helped Geisel cut squares from a huge color palette and place them on the storyboard. He rested in between. The notorious perfectionist was obsessed with color. If he marks the sketch as “105,” that means he wants 10% yellow, 0 magenta, and 50% cyan.

Goldsmith, who was chatting with USA TODAY from a Seuss-themed conference room at Penguin Random House in New York, remembers taking the artwork home on the plane. She got into a scuffle with the steward, who tried to take it from her. “If I have to, I’ll buy you a seat at this art,” she thought.

It’s been a year and a half since “Ah, the place to go!” After the book was published, Geisel died at the age of 87. Almost 35 years later, his books continue to chronicle American childhood, but they are not without controversy.

Some readers have turned away from Seuss because of the racist and insensitive illustrations in Geisel’s books and comics. In 2021, Dr. Seuss Enterprises stopped publishing six books for this reason. And sales skyrocketed, earning it 6th place out of the top 10 on USA TODAY’s best-selling books list the following week.

Now, a posthumously published book discovered in Seuss’s archives, “Sing the 50 United States!” sold about 92,000 copies in its first four weeks of release, according to Circana BookScan.

As we celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, we’re looking back at quintessentially American moments, people, and media. Geisel is one such figure, a man who revolutionized children’s literature and rose above the various sides of political debate.

When Theodor Geisel encouraged American children to read

Long before he became Dr. Seuss, Geisel was a burgeoning cartoonist and advertising illustrator.

But a 1954 Life magazine article changed everything. The article claimed that literacy rates were declining because children were bored with Dick and Jane primers. Geisel had already published several books, including “Horton Hears a Who!” and “If I run a zoo.” An editor at Houghton Mifflin asked Geisel to write an engaging book using only words from a vocabulary list for young learners. Geisel submitted “The Cat in the Hat.”

Geisel’s funny and colorful stories became an antidote to boring children’s books. Besides fun rhyming schemes and silly illustrations, Dr. Seuss’ books also prioritized life lessons about individuality, wonder, kindness, and equality. He wanted reading to be easy and fun for children.

“He saw himself as a writer first and an illustrator second,” Goldsmith says.

However, Geisel was particular about his art. He wasn’t afraid to send back finished prints because the colors weren’t right. Goldsmith remembers Geisel redesigning the cover of The Butter Battle Book just to go back to the original.

“He wasn’t confrontational, he wasn’t mean, he didn’t want to hurt your feelings,” Goldsmith says. “But he loved his colors.”

In addition to his books, Geisel was an editor at Beginner Books, a Random House publication he co-founded with publisher Phyllis Cerf. Every book he published bore his stamp of approval: “Go, Dog. Go!” Written by PD Eastman. It is often mistakenly remembered as a Dr. Seuss book. Goldsmith recalls strict “rules” about what should be included in art and writing. He was a tough editor, said Susan Brandt, CEO of Dr. Seuss Enterprises (DSE), who viewed his manuscript notes in the archives.

“He didn’t mince words,” Brandt says. “There was no ‘let me sugar it’ thing.”

Geisel left a mixed legacy.

According to Penguin Random House Children’s Books, more than 800 million Dr. Seuss books have been sold. Some of our best-selling books include “Green Eggs and Ham” (over 24 million copies), “The Cat in the Hat” (over 20 million copies), and “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” (over 20 million copies). The latter sells over a million copies each year and is forever the graduation gift of choice.

But not all are fondly remembered.

In 2019, the NAACP called for the censorship of all Dr. Seuss books and works in public schools and libraries due to images that “dehumanize and degrade” people of color and other marginalized groups. On Geisel’s birthday in 2021, DSE announced that it would cease publishing and licensing six books: “I Saw It on Mulberry Street”, “If I Ran the Zoo”, “McEligo’s Pool”, “The Cat Quiz”, and “Beyond the Zebras”. and “Scrambled eggs super!”

“These books are hurtful and portray people in the wrong way,” DSE said in a press release.

This decision was controversial. In a 2021 statement, the National Coalition Against Censorship said it was “disturbed” by the act and argued that it was better to “criticize the text” rather than “remove it.” Some questioned why these books had not been revised in the same way that other children’s books, such as the Hardy Boys series and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, have been “quietly updated to remove racist content,” the Guardian reported in 2021. Seuss himself revised books such as Mulberry Street during his lifetime.

Brandt said a panel of experts helped audit the books before taking them out.

“I don’t think there was a wrong decision. We just wanted to make a statement and stand by it and say, ‘This is who we are. We support our community.’ And we thought a stronger statement would be that we didn’t want to support these books anymore,” Brandt says.

Dr. Seuss was “both anti-racist and racist”

Racism also appears in Geisel’s early works. For example, his wartime propaganda comics included stereotypical and racist depictions of Japanese people.

In 1976, Geisel acknowledged that these cartoons were “hurried and embarrassingly poorly drawn, full of many snap judgments that any political cartoonist would have to make.” But he stopped short of apologizing.

There were many times in Geisel’s career when he appeared to be against racism, violence, and inequality. “Horton Hears a Who” is an allegory about the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, so it is considered by many to be an apology. He dedicated it to a Japanese friend. The Des Moines Register called “Horton” “a rhyming lesson in protecting minorities and their rights.” “The Lorax” continues to inspire environmental action. “Sneetches” and “Yertle the Turtle” criticized anti-Semitism and Adolf Hitler. and “The Butter Battle Book” satirized the Cold War and the nuclear arms race.

Philip Nel, a children’s author and author of “Was the Cat in the Hat Black?” says it’s more complicated than saying Geisel was once a racist and then “realized the error of his ways.”

“What’s interesting to me is that at the same time he’s writing a book that recycles stereotypes, he’s also writing a message book that makes a positive, progressive, inclusive political statement. He doesn’t understand that separation. He doesn’t realize how his visual imagination is steeped in racist caricature,” Nell says. “People often want to either defend Seuss or criticize Seuss, but I don’t think they’re right either way. I think you want to look at him critically, and then you’ll see his flaws, and all of those flaws and then some will really upset you.”

Preserving Dr. Seuss’ Legacy

Brandt said DSE will instead focus on books with “universal messages” that both parents and children will enjoy.

“We’re all products of our times, and he’s trapped in his time, but Dr. Seuss Enterprises is not,” Brandt says.

Geisel’s second wife founded DSE to preserve and further his legacy. Brandt said Audrey, who passed away in 2018, viewed DSE as a “caretaker” who prioritized quality and attention to detail. This includes a robust defense of intellectual property and copyright infringement.

One of the biggest challenges right now is getting kids’ attention everywhere they can get it, whether it’s reading stories on YouTube, travel experiences, film adaptations, or new books. For example, Seuss Studios is a new print publication that allows various authors to pull unused Geisel illustrations and use them in new children’s books. Lara Watkins was one such writer, using a sketch of an insect as the main character in “Hello, Sun!” She says she has an affinity for Seuss’s “foolishness.”

“Books are the foundation,” Brandt says. “Everything we do does no harm.”

In some cases, “do no harm” means protecting your legacy from further scandal. At the Dr. Seuss Archives at the University of California, San Diego, Brandt and archivist Linda Corey Claassen ponder the fate of a 1940s Narragansett beer tray featuring the “Chief Gansett” character illustrated by Geisel.

“Honestly, if we put this on display now, we would get so many letters because of the way Native Americans are portrayed,” Claassen says.

Back in New York, Goldsmith said there are works in the archives that will never see the light of day. The first is that I worked on it almost to completion, but then decided to back out.

“We felt it wasn’t appropriate for today’s market. It may have been appropriate for the market when he was alive, but we thought perhaps publishing it wasn’t serving him,” she says.

Why not?

“I’m reluctant to go there,” she says.

Two of Seuss’ most iconic books, The Cat in the Hat and How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, will turn 70 next year. Maintaining Geisel’s legacy requires taking the characters “to great places,” but there are certainly some things that Seuss’s custodians won’t take them to.

Orkin vs Aptive Pest Control Comparison 2026

0

National pest control companies typically offer a wide range of services, competitive pricing, and coverage in most states. However, not all major providers can solve your particular pest problem, and some have a better track record than others.

USA TODAY compared Orkin and Aptive pest control to help you decide which is the right option for you and which one offers better value.

Orkin and Aptive overview

Both Orkin and Aptive are national pest control companies, but Orkin operates in 49 states (excluding Alaska) and Aptive operates in 36 states. Orkin has 125 years of experience since 1901, and Aptive was just founded in 2015 and has over 10 years of experience.

Orkin is accredited by the Better Business Bureau (BBB), while Aptive is not. Like most national pest control providers, both companies struggle to maintain positive reviews, but Aptive is rated much more reliable on TrustPilot.

Differences in price and plans

In general, Orkin is more expensive than Aptive, but based on the services provided and the company’s experience, Orkin still seems like a better value.

Orkin vs. Aptive: Service Pricing

Unfortunately, neither Orkin nor Aptive offer pest control prices online. This is common practice for most pest control companies, as each situation is different and may require a unique approach.

“If a company gives you a price without asking any questions, you may have questions about how much they will offer you when the working relationship ends,” says Shelby Pattison, vice president of business operations at Peachtree Pest Control in Suwanee, Georgia.

However, according to our research, Orkin costs on average: Between $50 and $80 per monthAptive costs Average $50 per month. Please note that these prices apply most to general pest control services, so the cost of treating termites, bed bugs, and wildlife can increase significantly.

“IPM can be a little more expensive than the traditional procedure of overspraying, but its sustainability and safety are unparalleled,” said Daniel Kiefer, technical training manager for American Pest, a Columbia, Maryland-based pest control company. “At the end of the day, you very often get what you pay for. A good, safe service costs more than overspraying, but the results are better.”

Orkin v. Aptive Pest Control Plan

One of the reasons we think Orkin is one of the best overall pest control companies is because we customize pest control strategies to fit your property and specific needs. You will need to schedule an in-person visit before you can learn more about pricing and services available.

Aptive takes a more general approach, dividing its services into three plans.

Type of service Basic plan pro plan Premium plan
Basic service Ambient management of 30 common household pests Boundary control and rodent control Surroundings and rodent control, and mosquito treatment
Treatment frequency 4 times a year 6 times a year Every 30 days in warm weather and every 60 days in cool weather
Add-ons available Treatment of outdoor rodents, pantry pests, slugs, snails, and aphids mosquito treatment German cockroach treatment

Effects and treatment approaches

While Aptive focuses primarily on perimeter treatment and outdoor pest control, Orkin tackles pests inside and outside the home. Orkin can customize its processes and recommendations to your home, making it a better option for increased effectiveness. It also relies on an integrated pest management approach, which is more effective in the long term than insecticide-only treatments.

Both companies use only EPA-certified pesticides. Orkin offers a greener approach through Orkin Green, which uses “minimal risk” pesticides that are safe around children, pets, and plants.

Although Aptive is widely known as an eco-friendly brand, be aware that many of the pesticides they use are dangerous and should be used with caution. From a product standpoint, the two companies seem similar, but Orkin’s focus on pest prevention for long-term success makes it the better choice overall.

Customer reviews and satisfaction

“When researching companies online, check for both positive and negative reviews,” Kiefer advised. “Internet and social media reviews can give you a general idea about the company and the services provided, keeping in mind that online reviews can be negative.”

As of this writing, Orkin only has 1.35 out of 5 stars on the BBB website and 1.7 out of 5 on TrustPilot. Positive reviews mention friendly and professional technicians, timely service, and effective pest control. Some customers in the reviews we read even said that Orkin solved pest problems that other companies couldn’t.

Negative reviews of Orkin Pest Control complain of several issues with the company’s aggressive sales tactics and solicitation, services that don’t work as advertised, and high pricing.

Aptive has an even lower 1.08 star score with the BBB, but maintains a 4.5 star rating on TrustPilot. Positive reviews cite quality customer service, thorough testing and treatment, and good value for money. Negative reviews cite aggressive sales tactics, deceptive marketing, bait-and-switch pricing, and technicians who never show up for treatment.

Guarantee and Guarantee

Aptive offers a satisfaction guarantee and states that if you are not satisfied with the results, you can receive additional treatments at no additional charge. There is no guarantee that this service will achieve your desired results, but you can continue to receive repeated treatments if necessary.

Orkin offers a similar guarantee, promising repeat treatments at no additional cost if the pest problem persists. It also comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can rest assured.

While a satisfaction guarantee may not seem as valuable as a guarantee that the company will fix your pest problem, this is a better option to look for.

“A good pest management company will offer follow-up visits free of charge as part of your individual service agreement,” says Kiefer. “Customers should be skeptical of pest management guarantees, as it is nearly impossible to guarantee a pest-free environment under normal conditions.”

Which is better for general pest control?

Orkin is a better option overall, especially if you have a more serious pest problem or if you have an ongoing pest problem. An integrated approach taken to pest management is likely to be more effective. Orkin is more expensive, but it offers a customized pest control plan that will likely give you better results.

However, if you have a small pest problem or are on a tight budget, Aptive may be a better choice. Aptive has a low monthly service fee and takes a more general approach to pest control, making it useful for everyday problems.

Advantages and disadvantages of Aptive

Strong Points Cons
Save even more with monthly payments A more general approach to pest control
Focus on environmentally friendly products Treatable pest reduction
Free retreatment if necessary No treatment options for bed bugs

Advantages and disadvantages of Orkin

Strong Points Cons
Larger catalog of pests treated more expensive
Free retreatment and money back guarantee There is no one-size-fits-all treatment
More customization and home services available No free inspection

Which pest control company should I choose?

Overall, I recommend Orkin over Aptive. Orkin is more expensive, but with over 100 years of experience, a stronger satisfaction guarantee, and a more personalized approach to pest management, we believe you’ll get better results, especially in the long run.

If you are still unsure, please get quotes from both companies. You can get free quotes from both providers and compare them based on cost, value, and the specific pests being treated. You can also get quotes from providers in your area and see the differences between national and local companies.

“Customer service[at local businesses]might be a little more friendly and approachable for a smaller customer base,” Pattison said. “(But) many (domestic providers) are developing better training, resources and processes with larger teams while maintaining a ‘hometown’ feel within their urban branches.”

Consider both, compare quotes, and get a feel for what each company offers based on your initial interactions.

FAQ

Who is better than Orkin?

Orkin is the pest control company of choice for general pest control. Although more expensive than other options, Orkin has the longest track record in the industry, a strong satisfaction guarantee, and a highly effective approach to pest management. However, Terminix is best for termite treatment in particular, and Mosquito Joe is best for mosquito and tick control.

Is Aptive worth the money?

Aptive has had great success in providing general pest control services and prevention, so if you’re dealing with routine pest problems, they’re definitely worth your money. If you have a more severe infestation or are dealing with more problematic pests such as termites, bed bugs, or rodents, you may want to consider Orkin or Terminix instead.

Why did Aptive lose its BBB certification?

BBB does not provide specific information when a company loses or is no longer accredited. However, based on BBB guidelines and the recent lawsuit against Aptive, the company likely used deceptive marketing techniques and included deceptive language in its contracts regarding its environmentally friendly products, resulting in its decertification.

Is Aptive being sued?

Yes, Aptive is actively facing multiple class action lawsuits due to deceptive marketing and contract terms. It also allegedly used robocalls and other aggressive sales tactics, leading to further lawsuits in 2026.

President Trump allows landmark housing bill to become law without signature

play

WASHINGTON — A landmark affordable housing bill became federal law late July 11 without the president’s signature, after President Donald Trump refused to sign the bill in protest of Congress’ refusal to pass legislation unrelated to the election vote review.

The bipartisan Pathway to 21st Century Housing Act had been sitting on President Trump’s desk since June 29, after it passed both chambers of Congress by wide margins with strong bipartisan support. He did not sign or veto the bill after 10 days, so it automatically became law without any action.

After showing no commitment to his plan, President Trump said in a July 10 post on Truth Social that he would not sign the bill because Congress had not passed the SAVE America Act. The bill, which he supports, would require a photo ID and proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections and ban universal mail-in voting nationwide.

“I will not sign any housing bill that has been fully approved by Congress and sent to the White House in protest of the fact that the United States Senate is incapable of passing the American Rescue Act,” President Trump said in a statement.

But Trump also chose not to use his veto pen.

Trump, who made his fortune over a decades-long career in real estate, has made it clear in recent days that he doesn’t like the housing bill, dismissing it as a “big yawn.” But vetoing the bill could be a political blow to Republicans ahead of midterm elections, where voters were concerned about rising living and housing costs.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), one of the bill’s lead sponsors, celebrated the bill’s official status as federal law in a post on X.

“Breaking news: The clock strikes midnight and a bipartisan housing bill is signed into law,” Warren said. “President Trump refused to sign it, but that didn’t stop him. This legislation is groundbreaking. It will build more housing, lower costs, and for the first time stop private equity from buying up homes.”

The housing bill is the first major piece of legislation passed by Congress in more than 30 years to address the nation’s affordable housing crisis. In June, it passed both chambers of Congress by overwhelming margins, 358-32 in the House and 85-5 in the Senate, with strong bipartisan support.

The sweeping bill includes provisions aimed at encouraging more manufactured housing, loosening regulations on small mortgage loans and raising caps on how much banks can invest in projects addressing low- and moderate-income housing.

This legislation overhauls several federal housing programs and streamlines the environmental review process for housing. It also seeks to restrict large investors who own at least 350 properties from buying homes.

Jay-Z kicked off his 30th anniversary concert series in New York with a bang, featuring his wife Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as a special guest.

The rap titan kicked off the first of three shows at Yankee Stadium on July 10, opening the show with the opening track of his debut album, “Can’t Knock the Hustle,” featuring Mary J. Blige.

Shortly after, Beyoncé took to the stage to help sing Blige’s part and do a special remix.

“New York City, what’s up?” he told the crowd, wearing a New York bomber jacket and matching cap. “That’s how you start!”

The audience went wild as the Grammy-winning couple sang together on stage.

The Grammy Award-winning rapper will take over the stage at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York, for three highly anticipated shows to celebrate his 30th anniversary in music. The “Jay-Z 30” concert series commemorates the 30th anniversary of his debut album “Reasonable Doubt,” released on June 25, 1996. We also celebrate the 25th anniversary of our sixth studio album, The Blueprint, released on September 11, 2001.

Reasonable Doubt, released on his Roc-A-Fella Records label and featuring collaborations with Mary J. Blige, Notorious B.I.G., and Jazz-O, has been hailed by some critics as one of the greatest albums of all time.

Meanwhile, his sixth studio album, The Blueprint, which spent three weeks at number one on the Billboard 200, is similarly considered one of the best in the rap genre. In 2018, the recording was added to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry.

Later this year, the Roc Nation founder will hold his “Jay-Z 30” concert series in Los Angeles and Paris. The European performance will be held on Thursday, September 10th. The West Coast performance is scheduled for Friday, October 23rd. Jay-Z recently added a London show to his lineup on September 4, Beyoncé’s birthday.

The concert will be held at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and given the importance of the day, fans are already speculating that Beyoncé will perform.

IKEA will open seven new stores from 2026 to 2027. see location

If you’ve ever wanted to browse a furniture store while eating Swedish meatballs, your opportunity may be just around the corner.

Swedish furniture giant IKEA told USA TODAY it plans to open seven new stores in the United States by winter 2027. This includes six familiar large-format stores and one new small-format store from the chain.

Stores still scheduled to open in 2026 include stores in Illinois, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, New York and Florida, with another New York store and a Colorado store expected to open in early 2027, the company said in an email to USA TODAY.

IKEA currently operates more than 500 stores worldwide, including more than 50 in the United States.

Where will IKEA open new stores in 2026 and 2027?

Here are the seven cities where a new IKEA is expected to open in 2026-early 2027, along with the expected opening schedule.

  • Gurnee, IL – Fall 2026
  • Tulsa, Oklahoma – Fall 2026
  • Madison, WI – Late Fall 2026
  • New York City Soho District – Late Fall 2026 (Small store format)
  • Sarasota, Florida – Winter 2026
  • Buffalo, NY – Winter 2027
  • Fort Collins, Colorado – Winter 2027

The exact opening dates for each store have not yet been determined.

These stores are in addition to recent openings, including a store in Chantilly, Virginia, which opened on June 18th, and a store in Rockwall, Texas, which opened on May 13th.

In March 2026, IKEA’s parent company Inka Group announced plans to open 20 small stores in Europe and North America. The company said its smaller stores are designed to be cost-effective, can open significantly faster than traditional stores and provide “convenient access in places where people already do their daily shopping.”

“The investment in new small stores is part of a three-year, €5 billion investment aimed at opening new stores and improving existing stores in most of Ingka Group’s 32 markets,” the company said in a news release.

These smaller stores, also known as plan-and-order points, differ from traditional larger IKEA stores in that customers can chat with employees and order furniture solutions that “need a little more help, such as storage systems for kitchens, bathrooms, and closets.” Many Plan and Order stores have pick-up points, allowing customers to pick up their purchases when and where it’s convenient for them.

Norway accepts World Cup pressure but rejects predictions vs. England

0

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Norway did not view Saturday’s World Cup quarterfinal match against England as fulfilling its expectations.

Until this year, the red, white and blue team had not played in the tournament since reaching the last 16 in 1998, their best result at a World Cup to date. Still, expectations from outsiders are high for the 2026 squad, led by 25-year-old sensation Erling Haaland, despite nearly 30 years apart.

There is a widespread belief in some soccer circles that the Norwegians’ goal should be to reach the quarter-finals. But head coach Stolle Solbakken says such an idea is foolish. “It was nonsense in relation to the fact that someone who hasn’t been to a World Cup in 28 years, if you look at which countries are left, it’s a given,” Solbakken said on Friday, July 10. “Then it’s not so easy to play football on a global scale… But we said each match lives its own life, and we accepted that” match by match. ”

Solbakken said he wanted his team to just play on Saturday and focus on the pitch, rather than the Hard Rock Stadium environment or stories like Haaland vs. England superstar Harry Kane.

For Norway and Solbakken, we know that success is by no means guaranteed as the World Cup progresses. The deeper you get into the tournament, the more pressure there is and the more important each match is perceived to be. Still, Norway is willing to embrace the moment and the pressure that comes with it. That’s what we need at this moment.

“I think every game in this World Cup has been the most important and the best for Norwegian football, especially since we entered the knockout stages. So this is the third ‘most important’ game and I think the players are relaxed but in a competitive mood,” Solbakken said.

“So I think they’ve struck a great balance. They’re looking forward to the game, but of course they should also feel the pressure, because I don’t think they can be at their best if they don’t have a little bit of pressure. But I think they have a very good mix of looking forward to the game and feeling a little bit of pressure.”

Cases of “explosive” diarrhea continue to rise. See a map that tracks the spread

0

play

Cases of the disease caused by a parasite that causes explosive diarrhea continue to spread across the United States, with hundreds of cases surging and authorities trying to track them down.

Cyclosporiasis, a painful illness caused by a parasite commonly found in produce and herbs, has sickened at least 843 people in 31 states since May 1, according to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state health data. Michigan is already battling an outbreak that exceeds the total number of cases in 2025 by more than 14 times, and several other states are reporting cases in the hundreds.

Additional state-level reports show significant spikes in cases that are not yet reflected in the CDC surveillance dashboard, which has previously only been updated monthly. The latest data, released July 9, still lags state reports as authorities work to confirm infections. At this time, there is no single source evidence linking the case clusters.

Here’s what you need to know since the CDC’s last update on June 16, which reflected only 145 cases from 18 states nationwide.

What is cyclosporosis? What are the symptoms?

Cyclosporiasis is a parasitic infection that causes unpleasant gastrointestinal symptoms associated with food poisoning, such as diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. It is caused by the parasite Cyclospora caietanensis, also known simply as Cyclospora, and is usually transmitted through contaminated food.

Although unpleasant, it is generally not known to cause death, and many cases go unreported because people recover at home without seeking medical attention.

According to the CDC and Cleveland Clinic, the most common symptom is watery, frequent, and sometimes “explosive” diarrhea, but other problems include:

  • vomiting
  • loss of appetite
  • Bloating, including belching and gas, or stomach cramps
  • Extreme fatigue (malaise)
  • heat
  • nausea

View a map of states with cyclosporosis cases

The CDC tracks cystosis cases based on when and where a person was infected. As of July 9, 843 people in 31 states have been infected with the disease since May 1. A further 343 people were infected while traveling abroad and are being tracked and categorized separately.

Of the 843 people who became ill in the United States, 86 were hospitalized. No one died. Cases occurred in people aged 5 to 88 years, with a median age of 44 years. The cyclosporiasis “season,” or month when the U.S. typically sees a spike in the disease, begins May 1 and runs through the end of August, according to the CDC.

However, these numbers do not include hundreds more cases reported by individual states.

Why CDC numbers don’t match state releases

Even with recent updates, the CDC’s numbers still don’t match what each state is reporting individually. For example, the CDC lists only 161 to 300 cases in Michigan as of July 9, but state health officials reported 700 total cases to USA TODAY as of July 6.

The reason is simple. The CDC only reports laboratory-confirmed cases that occurred after May 1 and were “domestically confirmed,” meaning the person who became ill had not traveled internationally in the 14 days prior to developing symptoms. Meanwhile, many individual states are sharing data, including year-to-date numbers of cases and data that does not distinguish between domestic and foreign infections.

“CDC recognizes that states are likely reporting a higher number of cystospermia cases than reflected in CDC data and is working closely with states to update numbers as additional cases are confirmed,” the agency said in a statement at the top of its cystospermia surveillance page. “Since May 1, 2026, CDC has received reports of 843 confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis in the country and is aware of more than 1,500 cases that require further analysis to confirm that the disease is domestically acquired cyclosporiasis.”

In other words, authorities know there are others infected and now they just have to wait for tests to be completed. Additionally, even if states have had hundreds of cases since the beginning of the year, the CDC will not count the number of cases unless it can prove that people were infected after May 1st.

“We assume a six-week reporting lag between onset of symptoms and case reporting to CDC. Therefore, we expect the number of cases to continue to increase as data is received,” the portal page says. Officials told USA TODAY that the number of cases is rising so rapidly that they will begin requesting state data weekly instead of monthly.

States reporting the highest numbers

As of July 6, Michigan had more than 700 infections, making it the state with the highest number of infections to date, but other states are also reporting cases in the hundreds.

The Ohio Department of Health told USA TODAY on July 9 that it had recorded 364 cases of cyclosporiasis, all but six of which occurred after May 1. All cases were locally acquired, and 46 of them were hospitalized.

North Carolina told USA TODAY it had 205 cases between May 1 and July 9, while New York City had recorded 301 total cases as of July 7, 273 of which occurred after May 1. New York City’s case count includes not only people who may have been infected domestically, but also people who have recently traveled abroad.

New York state, which reports and tracks infectious diseases separately from New York City, confirmed 120 cases between May 1 and July 7. It has not been made clear whether all reported cases were infected within the country. The number of infections in the state has been relatively high in the past few years, ranging from 500 to 700 in 2024 and 2025.

How to avoid getting infected with parasites that cause diarrhea

Cyclosporiasis is transmitted through the fecal-oral route, that is, through contact with food, drinks, and surfaces contaminated with infected fecal particles. Usually this means directly consuming affected food or drink, or touching something contaminated and then touching your mouth without washing your hands.

A spike in cyclosporiasis infections is often seen during the warm summer months as infected fecal matter invades fresh summer crops such as basil, raspberries and lettuce, all of which have been linked to past outbreaks in the United States, according to the CDC.

Symptoms usually begin about a week after exposure, but symptoms can appear in as little as two days or up to two weeks later.

The infection is treated with antibiotics, and most healthy people can probably fight it off on their own, but the disease can last for months and come back if untreated, according to the CDC. As is often the case, children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to get seriously ill and even die and should contact a health care professional if they become ill.

To prevent getting cysticercosis in the first place, the CDC, Cleveland Clinic, and Michigan Department of Health recommend the following:

  • Avoid consuming food or water that may be contaminated with feces. Avoid drinking or cooking with untreated water.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water after using the restroom and before, during, and after preparing food.
  • Wash all food preparation surfaces, including utensils, cutting boards, and countertops, before and after use.
  • Wash and peel vegetables before eating. Give skinned produce such as melons and cucumbers a good rub. Cut out any damaged or bruised parts of fruits and vegetables before cooking and eating.
  • Refrigerate cooked fruits and vegetables as soon as possible (within 2 hours).

Although the country is experiencing a midsummer heatwave, some stores are already preparing displays for fall 2026 and have begun decorating for Halloween.

Over the July 4th weekend, USA TODAY reported that craft store Michael’s was stocking its shelves with spooky, fall-inspired ornaments, and Costco began selling giant skeleton lawn ornaments with LCD eyes for $259.99.

Spirit Halloween, the seasonal store synonymous with Halloween, has already unveiled its 2026 animatronic collection, according to a news release emailed to USA TODAY. This collection features 11 new spooky characters that are sure to scare unsuspecting trick-or-treaters this year.

Disney is also getting in on the Halloween fun, with the Disney Store teasing Halloween drops on Instagram and posting photos of merchandise inspired by the Disney Parks’ famous attraction, the Haunted Mansion.

In a post, the Disney Store said, “We anticipate spooky and fun Halloween items coming to Disney Stores soon.”

Here’s a look at the spooky drops for Halloween 2026 so far.

When is Halloween in 2026?

Halloween falls on October 31st every year. But Halloween 2026 will be even more special.

This year, the festival falls on a Saturday, making it the perfect time to go trick-or-treating, throw a Halloween party, or stay up until 3 a.m. to watch horror movies without worrying about going to work or school the next day.

Unforgettable merchandise from Disney Store

Disney unveiled a Haunted Mansion-inspired collection on July 6 that includes ear headbands, Christmas tree ornaments, dolls, squishmallows, home decor and more, according to a news release emailed to USA TODAY.

However, the Disney Store’s Halloween shop is “coming soon,” according to the website. It has not been officially announced when the collection will be released.

michaels retro halloween aesthetic

The shelves at Michael’s, a craft retailer with 1,300 stores nationwide, are already lined with eerie decorations adorned with antique portraits and illustrations of celestial motifs.

The retailer has released multiple collections as part of its 2026 Halloween line.

Giant skeleton looms over shoppers at Costco

Shoppers might pause when they see this giant skeleton on a Costco shelf.

USA TODAY spotted a giant skeleton lawn decoration at a Costco store in Miami, along with Halloween dog greeters modeled after a cocker spaniel wearing devil horns and a hat, a Doodle wearing a black and orange witch’s hat and collar, and a French bulldog wearing a black and purple witch’s hat and collar.

This decoration is also featured on Costco’s website as part of its boutique.

Also listed online is a 6-foot Vampire Butler animatronic and a 7.3-foot Gargoyle animatronic.

Are there any plans to release the Halloween collection at other stores?

While other retailers have not officially announced when their Halloween collections will be released, companies like Target, Home Depot, and Walmart release Halloween collections every year.

In recent years, Home Depot went viral in 2020 when its 12-foot giant skeleton Halloween decoration named Skelly became internet famous, according to a previous report by USA TODAY. In July 2025, the company announced plans for this year’s Halloween collection, featuring creatures and goblins that would terrify trick-or-treaters.

Similarly, Target’s Halloween collection will go viral in 2023, featuring Louis the Pumpkin Ghoul, an 8-foot-tall animatronic, singing the now-famous line “I do not have jack o lantern. My Name is Luis” has racked up millions of views.

Target has not officially announced when its Halloween collection products will return to stores, but in previous years it had announced that it would bring back Halloween products in July 2024 and August 2025.

Judges break their silence and go to fight for their courts

0

A cross-party group of current and retired judges boarded buses and toured classrooms and town squares in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan, insisting that courts be independent and trusted.

play

Michael Donnelly is used to addressing the public through judicial opinions.

The former Ohio Supreme Court justice said, “It’s over.”

So Mr. Donnelly, along with a bipartisan group of current and retired state and federal judges, did what their profession trained them not to do. It’s about making a public statement about what’s happening in court.

“It’s not something I’m comfortable with. In my 20 years on the bench, I’ve never gone out and said my opinion. I just let our opinion speak for itself,” Donnelly said. “But these are not normal times, and when I see the politicization of the judiciary happening at the speed it is happening, I have no choice but to go out and speak out about it.”

The group traveled by bus for four days this week, making more than a dozen visits to Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan, speaking to elementary and high school students, lawyers, activists and concerned citizens about the importance of an independent judiciary and the rule of law. The trip, which was funded by nonpartisan pro-civil groups (Democracy Rising Collaborative and Keep Our Republic), served as a test case for whether Americans are concerned about challenges to the power of the judiciary.

Once-quiet judges see a growing threat from a president who personally attacks lawyers who rule against him. President Donald Trump has called his Supreme Court appointees’ failure to support him “dishonest” and “unpatriotic.” Meanwhile, members of Congress have increasingly accused judges of handing out political decisions and threatened to remove judges who don’t hand down sentences they like.

In March, Chief Justice John Roberts warned in an unusual rebuke that personal criticism of federal judges was dangerous. The remarks came two days after Trump called the federal district judge who ruled against his administration “bizarre, mean, crooked and completely out of control.”

“Hostility directed against individuals is dangerous and it must stop,” he said.

Without naming Trump, Roberts insisted that the attack on the judge was not from “just one political point of view.”

USA TODAY had a private seat on the wood-paneled bus and spoke with the judge about the role Americans will play in our future democracy. And why do they think now is the time to speak out?

Former Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor worries about what will happen if Americans lose faith that courts will apply the law regardless of politics, political party or social standing. She said they need to start by making sure people know about their local judges and what their jobs are.

“We’re hearing from the highest officials in this country that judges are political, judges don’t follow the law, and they’re handing out horrendous sentences,” O’Connor said. “There are people who are starting to believe that the microphone is so loud that there is no basis for what is being said. We have to counter this with the truth.”

Carlo “Defender of Democracy”

O’Connor’s 18-month-old Lagotto Romagnolo pup, Giancarlo Cappuccino (who fans have come to call him “Carlo”), stayed by O’Connor’s side for much of the trip. At the Westmoreland County Courthouse in Greenburgh, Pennsylvania, security guards allowed Mr. Carlo to enter the courthouse after Mr. O’Connor said that Mr. Carlo was a “defender of democracy.”

Back on the bus, Carlo lies on a faux-leather bench, watching the FIFA World Cup and a black-and-white cowboy movie. Robert Orr, a former North Carolina Supreme Court associate justice, handed out dog treats from his pocket.

At the LeMoyne Community Center in Washington, Pennsylvania, children asked judges questions about their jobs and their role in democracy. O’Connor said there are people who don’t like democracy and want political courts.

“Judges have to ignore what politicians say and do,” O’Connor said.

In an early childhood class at a community center, Senior Judge Leo Gordon of the U.S. Court of International Trade sits on a child-sized couch and reads a book. Pete the cat cries for ice cream! ” For children aged 4 or 5.

marching in robes

About 100 people waved signs and small American flags outside the Joseph P. Kineary Federal Courthouse in Columbus, Ohio, for a news conference with judges, lawyers and civic leaders. The crowd was filled with officials from the nonpartisan government watchdog group Common Cause, the Ohio Bar Association, and the League of Women Voters.

Ann Hawk, 75, of Columbus held up a sign that read, “Defend Our Rights.”

“We want to make sure that the people who enforce the law are fair and honest and not just going after various political enemies,” Hawk said. “It puts us all at risk for a politicized justice system, because it has the power to put us in prison.”

Inspired by Poland’s 2020 “March of the Thousand Robes” campaign defending judicial independence, the justices donned robes and walked several blocks with the crowd to the Ohio Supreme Court Square.

Sweating in 85-degree heat, they held up purple roses to symbolize judicial independence. Several women held up banners that read, “We will protect the Constitution (in our hearts).” The SUV driver stuck his thumb out the window and honked his horn repeatedly.

“We’re here because we have to do something, we have to make sure the justices have a say, we’re trying to show that we’re not partisan and continue to emphasize to the rest of society and the public that it’s wrong to disparage the judiciary,” said Judge Michael Mentel of Ohio’s 10th District Court of Appeals.

Former Cleveland Municipal Court Judge Ron Adlin said adding his name and stature to the tour would have to be bipartisan. He is a Democrat and Mr. O’Connor is a Republican.

“Many judges have been very[cautious]about standing up on this for fear of being seen as partisan in some way,” Adlin said. “There’s nothing partisan about this. In fact, we’ve bent quite a bit over backwards to have bipartisan judges.”

Pocket-sized Constitution and Founding Fathers

Bus passengers gasped when they saw more than 100 people gathered at an observation deck in Worcester, Ohio. Some held handmade placards praising the rule of law and thanking judges for raising awareness. The League of Women Voters of Wayne County set up a table to register to vote. Members of the local bar association also joined the crowd. Organizers handed out pocket-sized copies of the Constitution.

“No amount is enough,” Orr said, slipping one into his inside jacket pocket.

Judge Betty Sutton of the Ninth District Court of Appeals of Ohio addressed the crowd.

“You have to be your voice and you have to make people understand that judges are not just the names on the ballot. They are the ones who can make a difference in your lives, in the lives of our country, and in the trajectory of our state and our nation,” Sutton said.

Shocked audience members put their hands over their mouths as Mr Gordon explained how the rise in physical attacks on judges has changed their lives and affected their families.

As the judges entered, some in the eager audience wanted to talk about money in politics, the latest Supreme Court decisions, and the voter ID law the president wants to pass in Congress.

“I see the courts as a guardrail for all processes, policies and actions, whether it’s local, state, national government or the public in general. We’re seeing those guardrails slowly erode instead of being removed,” said Barb Friedhoff, 66, of Worcester.

Donnelly, a former Ohio Supreme Court justice, told the crowd that the Founders understood humanity and power when they created three equal branches of government. He said the public must be wary of efforts to diminish the power and authority of the judiciary.

“The Constitution does not defend itself. The Constitution never defends itself and never will. The rule of law does not defend itself. The Constitution never defends itself and never will.” “Democracy does not protect itself; never has, and never will.”

He added: “The threat to the rule of law is greater than at any point in my lifetime.”

Once back on the bus, the judges were surprised by the size of the crowd and questioned whether they should have focused on smaller towns.

“The personal conversations I’ve had with people have been really moving and encouraging, and it’s really motivating me to continue doing things like this,” O’Connor said.

As the mileage progressed, the retired judges talked about their grandchildren, judicial activism, and local politics, with occasional chuckles. Adolin flipped through the book before closing his eyes. Gordon, the only sitting judge who spent several days on the bus, was isolated with a pile of papers and a video call on his laptop and cell phone in the back corner.

“We need to humanize this facility,” Orr said. “These are not hidden figures passing decisions that affect people’s lives. These are women and men from our communities, the majority have long careers in law and justice, and the majority are trying to do the right thing.”

hire a judge

High school students crowded the judge inside the Carl B. Stokes Federal Courthouse in Cleveland. How will artificial intelligence change the way people work? How can we encourage diverse opinions among store clerks? Why do sentences vary so widely between judges?

Mr. Gordon told the children that he writes his opinions so carefully that sometimes he and the clerk spend 15 minutes searching for the right words.

During a barbecue lunch at ThirdSpace Action Lab, the judges were “recruited” by students and community members. Mr. Gordon described the long process of being interviewed and appointed as a federal judge. Gordon said it can be misleading for news media to identify which president appointed judges. For example, Gordon is a Democrat who was selected to be a judge by President George W. Bush.

After a stop at a bakery in Toledo, the smell of donut icing wafted through the bus. Rain pounded the windshield of the bus on the way to Michigan. Some of the referees were watching the World Cup match between Morocco and France on their mobile phones.

Trial run

The justices’ trip ended on July 10 at the Grosse Pointe Public Library near Detroit, where some spoke about the threats their families faced.

Judge Chris Trebilcock of Michigan’s Second District Court of Appeal said after his appointment that he warned children about posting on social media and opening doors to strangers.

“We are all human beings with families…we are also members of your community,” he said.

The tour ended with a visit to an ice cream truck.

Several of the judges said they hoped the tour would be repeated across the country.

“Let’s bring this kind of thing to other states. I think it can and should be done,” O’Connor said.

Adlin said it’s important to spread the idea that judges should stand up for their profession.

“We hope that others will be inspired to do something similar,” Adlin said. “The march of a thousand judges begins with just one judge.”

Record numbers of young (and not so young) people are living with their parents.

0

play

Census data shows a record number of adults under 35 are choosing to live with their parents rather than pondering the increasingly difficult calculus of living alone.

More than 25 million adults under 35 will be living with their parents in 2025, according to a June report from Realtor.com based on census numbers. This is the highest number ever recorded, including at the peak of the coronavirus pandemic, when millions of young Americans returned to their parents’ nests.

“This means one in three 18- to 34-year-olds has moved back home to live with their parents,” said Hannah Jones, senior economist at Realtor.com.

The proportion of young people living with their parents was well below 30% at the beginning of the new millennium. It rose during the Great Recession, rose again during the COVID-19 pandemic, and then sawawed in the years that followed.

Why do young people return to their parents’ homes?

For several years during the pandemic, adults under 35 sought refuge in their parents’ homes to survive quarantine and escape the crowds of big cities, demographic experts say. Currently, young adults return to or remain in their parents’ homes primarily due to cost.

According to Realtor.com, the median home price is $430,000. This is 34% higher than 2019 home prices. The median asking rent was $1,673, an increase of 18%.

“Gen Z and Millennials generally want to buy a home. They want to be independent, but they feel it’s not accessible,” Jones said.

The idea of remaining in one’s childhood home well into adulthood carries a lasting stigma that suggests a failed start-up. Many Americans think this trend could be bad for society.

Young people face a tough job market. But most adults under 35 who live with their parents aren’t there because they don’t have a job. Realtor.com reports that 7 in 10 adults ages 25 to 34 who live with their parents are employed.

“This feels like a housing issue, not an employment issue,” Jones said.

Mortgage payments are rising. The same goes for rent.

Mortgage payments have skyrocketed in recent years, raising the bar for first-time homeowners.

From 2020 to 2024, the typical mortgage payment, adjusted for inflation, increased from $1,408 to $2,207, according to Bankrate. The surge reflects rising home prices and rising interest rates. Housing payments had been relatively flat for several years before the spike.

For young adults, Jones says, staying in their parents’ home is “a way to cut expenses and save more money,” working toward the ultimate goal of “buying a home at a younger age than if you were living alone and saving money on housing.”

It’s not just exorbitant housing costs that keep young people stuck in their parents’ homes. More broadly, researchers say rising mortgage and rent costs are preventing Gen Z and younger millennials from forming independent households.

According to the Urban Institute, from 2005 to 2024, the proportion of adults ages 25 to 34 who lived independently, renting or owning a home with a spouse decreased from 74% to 62%.

Meanwhile, the proportion of adults aged 25 to 34 who live with their parents rose from 12% in 2005 to 20% in 2024.

“They prefer to be in Mom and Dad’s basement,” says Jun Zhu, a clinical associate professor of finance at Indiana University and a non-resident fellow at the Urban Institute.

These trends are shrinking the market for first-time home buyers.

According to the National Association of Realtors, by 2025, first-time homebuyers will only account for 21% of all homebuyers, the lowest on record. The typical age of first-time buyers has risen to 40, an all-time high.

Couples are more likely to form a household

If you want to save money to buy your first home, it helps to have a second income in your household. However, Americans are marrying later in life. From 2008 to 2024, the percentage of adults ages 30 to 34 who are unmarried rose from 32% to 47%.

“You need almost two household incomes to buy a home,” said Krista Westrick Payne, associate director of the National Center for Family and Marriage Research at Bowling Green State University in Ohio.

“And if you’re not living with someone, you’re losing 40 to 60 percent of your household income,” she said.

Researchers see a strong link between postponing marriage and living at home among young people. Married couples are much more likely to own or rent their own home than unmarried couples.

Westrick-Payne said men typically marry about two years later than women. This may explain why men in their early 30s are almost twice as likely to live with their parents as women in the same age group, 16% versus 9%.

Westrick-Payne said her parents’ home is “a place where you can leave yourself until you get a better job, until you get an apartment, until you find a partner, until you find a roommate.”

Westrick-Payne said one overlooked factor in young people’s living arrangements is that they often serve as caregivers for elderly parents.

The oldest baby boomers are now 80 years old. Most baby boomers own homes, and many of them are very large. As you get older, you may need help with daily activities. Their children will help.

“I think in some cases, parents are more dependent on their children than we realize,” Westrick-Payne says. “And you don’t hear much of that in conversation.”

President Trump warns of ‘communists’, what is a democratic socialist?

0

Democratic socialists like AOC and Zoran Mamdani are making inroads in some cities. Republicans call them communists, but their ideologies are different.

play

Ahead of difficult midterm elections, Republicans are seizing the opportunity to denounce their opponents as extremists following Democratic Socialists’ recent victories in the Democratic congressional primaries in New York and Colorado.

Republican leaders have raised the specter of radical left authoritarianism by calling progressive Democrats “communists,” an echo of Cold War-era messages from prominent Republicans such as Sen. Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin and former President Richard Nixon.

“President Ronald Reagan once warned about communism,” House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) said recently on “Fox News Sunday,” referring to the late Republican president who clashed with the Soviet Union during the Cold War.

“There’s a barbarian at the gate right now,” Johnson said on July 5. “So this election is for all the marbles.”

President Donald Trump also stepped up his attacks.

“These are hard-core godless communists,” President Trump said at the conservative Faith and Freedom Coalition conference on June 26. “This is the most serious threat to our nation since our founding.”

President Trump devoted part of his speech on the 250th anniversary of American independence on July 4th to attacking communism.

Democratic socialists and academic experts argue that this ideology is not communism, but rather a belief that the economy should be run in the interests of the people through democratic decision-making. They argue that governments should play an active role in expanding public services that address specific basic needs, such as housing and health care.

“The information is all in the title,” Susan Kang, an associate professor of political science at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice at the City University of New York and a member of the Democratic Socialists of America of New York, told USA TODAY. “We want to challenge the way capitalism distributes things. It’s never done by force. It’s never done by violence. It’s never done by tricks. It’s always done because it has the support of the majority.”

Democratic socialists have recently scored victories in very liberal cities. In 2025, Zoran Mamdani wins the New York City mayoral election and Katie Wilson is elected Mayor of Seattle. In June, Claire Valdez and Dalializa Avila Chevalier won New York City’s congressional primary, Melat Quiroz won Denver, and Janice Ruiz-George won the Democratic primary for mayor of Washington, D.C. In these dark blue areas, winning the Democratic primary equals winning the election.

All policies were focused on addressing affordability through measures such as “Medicare for All,” a national program that is supposed to guarantee health insurance to all Americans. They also call for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the abandonment of U.S. aid to Israel amidst heavy civilian casualties in the wars in Gaza and Iran.

“We want to push these ideas into the existing political system in the United States,” Kang said.

democratic socialism vs. communism

DSA’s national website said it believed capitalism needed to be replaced with “a system in which ordinary people have a real voice in their workplaces, communities and societies.” The group said its vision rejects “an authoritarian vision of socialism.”

Liberals, progressives, and democratic socialists often point out that the United States has its own popular socialist policies. This includes social safety net programs such as Medicare and Social Security, but also basic services such as public schools and municipal water. Most recently, the Trump administration opened Freedom Fuel gas stations offering gasoline for $3.47 a gallon, providing government market intervention in the midst of a hugely unpopular war in the Middle East with rising energy costs.

Communism, advocated by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels in the Communist Manifesto, envisions a classless, stateless society ruled by a single party and ruled by the working class. When Americans think of communism, they think of the totalitarian and undemocratic governments of the former Soviet Union and North Korea.

Ideologues and elections

Some branches of the DSA, such as the DSA’s Red Star Caucus, have Marxist-Leninist and Maoist members, but they are fringe groups who have run for office with little success, said Max Sowicki, a Virginia-based economist, author, and DSA member.

Still, left-wing ideologues have some influence. The national DSA opposed U.S. military aid to Ukraine after the Russian invasion, and the delegation hosted Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who is now imprisoned and widely seen as having set up a dictatorship under a socialist government before being arrested by U.S. authorities.

But Sawicki, who is not speaking on behalf of DSA, said successful DSA chapters include effective campaign management, with organizers winning several victories in city, state and federal offices in places like New York City. According to DSA’s own figures, it has grown from 5,000 members in 2017 to more than 100,000 by 2026.

He noted that Mamdani’s proposals, such as fast and free buses, a freeze on rent increases for rent-stabilized apartments and public grocery stores, are popular with New York City voters.

Younger generations are more likely to support socialism than older voters elected during the Cold War, and socialism may conjure images of poor, unfree societies like the former communist blocs of Eastern Europe. Democratic socialists instead often point to countries in Scandinavia and Western Europe that have enacted socialist policies of universal health care, housing, and high wages within democratic institutions.

A July 4 survey by Morning Consult and the liberal think tank Cato Institute found that 53% of Gen Z respondents had a favorable view of socialism, compared to just 27% of boomers. At the same time, a 2025 Gallup poll found that 54% of Americans view capitalism favorably, down from 60% in 2021.

Kang said Americans are now able to focus on challenges in their lives, like buying groceries and housing, compared to previous generations, when the cost of necessities like housing and higher education was much lower.

Rather than a fully defined political ideology in the United States, democratic socialism can be understood as a reaction to establishment politics that embraces slightly left-leaning principles such as universal health care, creating more affordable housing, and redirecting U.S. policy in the Middle East, all of which are popular among Democrats, said Nick Beauchamp, an associate professor of political science at Northeastern University.

“These are the things that candidates are running for, and these are the things that people care about,” he told USA TODAY. “These are not necessarily about democracy or socialism, but as part of the sort of bundle of left-wing policies that people now associate with these words.”

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) is considered the godfather of modern American democratic socialism, and his vision nearly won him the Democratic presidential ticket in 2016. Two years later, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) defeated House Democratic Caucus Chairman Joe Crowley and provided a blueprint for overturning the system.

Ocasio-Cortez was joined by Michigan Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib, former Rep. Jamaal Bowman of New York and former Rep. Cori Bush of Missouri, the latter two of whom lost their seats to moderates in the 2024 Democratic primary.

Democratic socialists have recently won a number of victories in parliamentary elections. In addition to Mamdani’s election in New York City, Chris Love also won the vacant seat in Philadelphia. In late June, Melat Quiroz unseated Democratic Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colo.), who had held the seat in Denver for nearly 30 years.

Still, at the federal level, there will only be a handful of Democratic Socialists in the 435-member House of Representatives in the next Congress. Democratic socialists have not yet achieved success in the battlegrounds.

Do establishment Democrats support democratic socialism?

Some moderate and centrist Democrats worry that the rise of far-left candidates, even if limited to safe Democratic districts, could give the party’s candidates relevance in key battleground states and districts.

“If they become the face of the Democratic Party, we’re going to get crushed in the presidential election,” said Jim Kessler, co-founder and executive vice president of policy at the moderate think tank Third Way.

Kessler said “a large portion of the country” believes ideas such as abolishing ICE are “insane.”

Republicans clearly agree with Kessler that it’s Democrats’ responsibility.

“President Trump will continue to criticize their extremism and draw a sharp contrast to common-sense America First policies,” White House press secretary Olivia Wales said in a statement.

After winning the primary, some mainstream Democrats began to actively embrace democratic socialists.

Following the Democratic Socialists’ recent victory, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), who is seeking to help his party take control of Congress while retaining legislative leadership, told NPR that his party’s caucus includes a variety of viewpoints, from centrists to progressives.

“The overwhelming majority of people in the caucus will be focused on stopping MAGA extremism on the one hand,” he said, “but also, most importantly, doing everything we can to make life better for the everyday Americans we are privileged to represent.”

Republicans typically fail to recognize this ideological diversity in the Democratic caucus when they label their opponents as socialists or communists. However, it remains to be seen whether this condition will have the effect it once had among floating voters.

“They really use the word socialism too much to describe things they don’t like,” economist Sowicki said, adding: “If everything is socialist, nothing is socialist.”

Republican Sen. John Kennedy is a TikTok superstar without a filter

A worldly lawmaker has become one of the most-followed U.S. senators on social media, thanks to his unique style and off-color humor.

play

After staring into his cell phone’s selfie camera, Louisiana Sen. John Kennedy flipped his view to reveal a lush oasis: his backyard.

“This is one of those stupid videos my staff told me I should make,” the 74-year-old junior senator said in a video posted June 17. After admitting, “I don’t see why on God’s green earth anyone should care,” Kennedy showed viewers a manicured lawn moistened with sprinklers and two patio umbrellas on a spotless deck.

He warned viewers around the world not to set foot on its turf or risk stepping on “dog poo”.

Nearly 750,000 users appear to be interested in Kennedy’s whereabouts. The backyard video generated over 1 million TikTok views.

He is also the most followed Republican senator on TikTok, with 1.3 million followers on Instagram, where his videos go viral as well. The little-known Southern congressman, who shares a name with one of America’s most famous presidents, has become an Internet favorite for his candor and off-color humor (he recently introduced his followers to elliptical trainer Margaret).

Social media stardom could be a boon for a Louisiana lawmaker considering replacing President Donald Trump as the party’s top candidate in 2028. Of course, Trump owns the social media platform Truth Social, and before that he relied on X (formerly Twitter) to get his thoughts and opinions across.

President Trump and former Vice President Kamala Harris both used social media posts to appeal to young voters during the 2024 election. In the end, it was young people who contributed to President Trump’s victory.

“Political leaders who are thinking long-term are actually very smart to appeal to younger voters because they know that once you start voting for one party at age 18, 19, 20, you’re likely to continue voting for one party for the rest of your life,” said Debra Reiter, a political science professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Mr. Kennedy is secretly a leading candidate for the White House. Kennedy told NewsNation’s Katie Pavlich that he is focused on the midterm elections and re-election to the Senate, but would not rule out a run. “I’ve had some people talk to me about it. I’m not trying to do that, but remember that song by the Judds, ‘Why Not Me?'” Kennedy said.

His book, “How to Test Idiots Negative: And Why Washington Never Will,” was released in October and became a No. 1 New York Times bestseller. When asked on comedian Theo Fung’s podcast “This Past Weekend” if he had any ties to the famous Democratic Kennedy family, he replied, “If so, I’m the poor side of the family.”

Sen. Kennedy’s office did not do so. rHe responded to USA TODAY’s request for comment about his popularity on social media.

Why do politicians like John Kennedy lead unfiltered lives?

Kennedy has amassed 4.8 million likes on TikTok, dominating her peers on the platform.

Senate Republicans often shy away from TikTok, a popular platform for Gen Z users that Kennedy and others once considered banning because of its ties to China. The only other Republicans from his contemporaries with verified accounts are Montana Sen. Tim Sheehy, whose account has fewer than 300 followers and has not posted any videos, and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who is on track to reach 24,000 followers.

Cory Booker (D-N.J.) is the most followed U.S. senator on TikTok in the nation. He has 1.7 million followers.

Kennedy, a former Democrat, served five terms as Louisiana’s treasurer. He was first elected as Treasury Secretary in 1999, but switched parties to become a Republican in August 2007, the year before President Barack Obama was elected to the White House.

Kennedy had made two unsuccessful bids for the Senate, but won his third election in 2016, the same year Trump was elected to the Oval Office.

He won reelection in 2022 with a nearly 45 percentage point advantage over his primary Democratic challenger. In recent years, Mr. Kennedy rose to online fame after a fan account recorded his cable news appearances on TikTok.

One video posted last November, featuring a montage of his wits, received 7 million views on TikTok. A similar post in July of this year attracted 600,000 posts.

“I’m not saying you’re the stupidest person in the world, but you better hope the stupidest person in the world doesn’t die,” Kennedy once said on Fox News. “I don’t see why we should give money to countries that hate us. They should be able to hate us for free,” Kennedy said in another video.

He dramatically joked to FOX’s Martha McCallum, “God, please give me patience, because if you give me strength, I’m going to need bail money.”

Chicken Salad and Charlie the Dog give a relatable look at the life of a senator.

One expert said online content featuring Kennedy resonates because he is authentic.

“Thirty years ago, something like John Kennedy, the backyard-dweller, approachable and humorous, would have only appeared in Parade magazine on the weekends,” said April Eichmeyer, a professor of emerging media at the University of St. Thomas.

“You don’t have to wait for it anymore, you don’t have to filter it anymore,” she said.

Scott Dunn, a political communication professor at Radford University, told USA TODAY that social media allows politicians like Kennedy to develop quasi-social relationships with their supporters, creating an intimacy that is effectively one-sided.

The construction of parasocial relationships is evident in Kennedy’s content. In a recent video that went viral, he wore a backwards ball cap and introduced his 9-year-old dog Charlie, who is part Maltese and part terrier, to his followers.

He noted that Charlie, previously owned by a homeless person, is muscular, sturdy and compact.

“Charlie also doubles up as my wireless doorbell, especially when the UPS guy or the Amazon guy comes by,” Kennedy said. “He often forgets how to do things, but sometimes his memory comes back and he can walk three or four feet on his hind legs to beg because a homeless person taught him how to do it,” the senator added.

Charlie’s introduction received 235,000 likes on TikTok. Eichmeyer, the emerging media professor, said Kennedy’s humorous videos were his introduction to politics.

“It’s a place where you expect people to be interested in what you have to say and look elsewhere,” she said.

In one of Kennedy’s most popular videos (with 3 million views and 478,000 likes), the congressman gave supporters the inside scoop on the popular meal. He shared his wife Becky’s “not-so-world famous” chicken salad recipe. A jar of salad and two slices of white bread were spread out on the marble-ceilinged kitchen island.

“This chicken salad is better than sex,” Kennedy said before declaring, “This chicken salad is better than sex.” “Not really, but you get the point.”

Witness says ICE’s account of Houston shooting is ‘absolutely false’

Three men who say they witnessed the shooting say through their lawyers that ICE’s account of what happened to Lorenzo Salgado Araujo is “false.”

play

Three men who say they witnessed the fatal shooting of a Mexican man by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents are speaking out about what they witnessed, calling the authorities’ version of what happened “completely false.”

Jose Trinidad Rojas, Daniel Tirado Pantoja, and Victor Salgado said on Friday, July 10, that they witnessed the shooting death of their colleague Lorenzo Salgado Araujo on July 7 in Houston. Mr. Salgado and Mr. Salgado Araujo are also brothers.

After the shooting, immigration authorities said they had targeted Salgado Araujo, 52, because they mistook him for someone else. Investigators said he tried to “weaponize his car” against investigators and was shot by them.

But Rojas, Tirado and Salgado say that’s a mistake. Contrary to ICE’s account, there were no ICE agents in front of Salgado Araujo’s white van, the man’s lawyer, Hugo Balderas Ibarra, said at a press conference Friday.

“I can say with confidence that my client’s version of events is very different from what ICE officials are saying,” Balderas-Ibarra told reporters. “All three of my clients reiterated that at no time did the agent stand in front of the vehicle or did the agent ever put the agent in any dangerous position.”

Balderas-Ibarra added: “That’s completely false.”

Balderas Ibarra, speaking to his client, said the deputy fired at Salgado Araujo from the side of the van.

USA TODAY has reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for comment on the account shared by Balderas-Ibarra and whether the operative in the shooting remains on active duty.

There is no clear video of the shooting. Rep. Sylvia Garcia (D-Texas) said the agents involved were not wearing body cameras and their cars did not have dashboard cameras.

An ICE spokesperson said in a previous statement that Salgado Araujo “refused to comply with multiple verbal commands and weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run over ICE law enforcement officers.”

“To protect himself, his fellow officers, and the public, the officer fired his weapon in self-defense,” they said.

Balderas-Ibarra and many other lawmakers criticized the statement as eerily similar to what authorities have released in response to other mass shootings, including the January 2025 shootings of Renee Good in Minneapolis and Marimar Martinez in Chicago.

The Houston-based attorney said he fears his client will be forced to sign deportation papers to keep him from testifying in court about what happened.

“Given the scale of this case and the impact it will have, my client may be coerced into signing a document to sign a voluntary removal,” Balderas-Ibarra said, referring to tactics reported in ICE facilities across the country. “It’s very important that we maintain the integrity of this investigation. If they’re deported, that’s all going to matter.”

Salgado Araujo’s family is also calling for the release of the three men. The family believes the trio’s story may be the only way to get to the truth about what happened.

ICE said the agency’s inspector general is investigating the shooting and that FBI agents in Houston are investigating “a possible assault on a federal law enforcement officer.”

The testimony shared by attorneys for three men in ICE custody in Texas comes as Houston Mayor John Whitmore calls for an independent investigation into the shooting.

“I served as Austin’s chief of criminal justice for 30 years and was involved in numerous investigations and oversight reviews of police operations,” Whitmore said Friday. “Nothing is worse than what ICE brought into Houston about 80 hours ago, Tuesday morning.”

He went on to say that Salgado Araujo “was chased by an unmarked vehicle and shot dead before he could even identify himself as a Houstonian.”

Whitmore promised to bring the full force of the city’s investigative powers into the case.

England star Harry Kane has admitted he played golf with US President Donald Trump “about 18 months ago”.

President Trump said he played golf with Kaine earlier this week.

President Trump said, “I think Cain is a great player.” “I played golf with him and I really like him. He’s a good golfer.”

At a press conference in Miami on Friday, July 10, ahead of the World Cup quarter-finals between England and Norway, Mr. Cain admitted that he had played golf with Mr. Trump – likely at Trump’s International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida.

“Honestly, I played okay,” Kane said. “We played about 18 months ago. He invited me to play when I was in Palm Beach. So when the president invites you somewhere… it was a pretty surreal experience just to meet him and play golf with him.”

“Honestly, he plays pretty good golf. I wish I could play golf as well as he does when I’m his age, that’s for sure. So (it was) a unique experience and I’m just grateful that he invited me to play.”

Kane has scored six goals at the World Cup so far, leading England to a quarter-final showdown with Norway at Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday.

This isn’t the first time President Trump has been in the news this week for a World Cup-related topic.

President Trump has contacted FIFA president Gianni Infantino in an effort to overturn the one-match suspension of U.S. men’s national team striker Folarin Balogun for his red card.

Although Infantino insisted that President Trump’s summons had no influence on FIFA’s decision, Balogun’s suspension was eventually changed to a suspended sentence, making him eligible to play against Belgium in the Round of 16.

Despite Balogun being in the lineup, the United States lost 4-1 on Monday, July 6 and was eliminated from the tournament.

What is Mega Millions?

Mega Millions is a lottery that is played in 45 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Each ticket costs $5, and players can choose six numbers from two different number pools: five different numbers from 1 to 70 (white balls) and one number from 1 to 24 (gold mega ball), or choose Easy Pick/Quick Pick.

If you match all six winning numbers in the drawing, you win the jackpot. If there are multiple jackpot winners, the jackpot prize will be shared.

How to play Mega Millions

To play Mega Millions, you must purchase a ticket. This can be done at several locations, including local convenience stores, gas stations, and grocery stores. In some states, you can purchase Mega Millions tickets online.

Once you have your ticket, you have to choose six numbers. Five of them are white balls, numbered from 1 to 70. The golden mega ball ranges from 1 to 24.

If you’re feeling particularly unlucky or don’t want to go through the hassle of picking, you can request a “quick pick” or “easy pick.” When you use these options, your computer randomly generates numbers.

Mega Millions tickets have built-in multipliers that increase non-jackpot prizes by 2, 3, 4, 5, or 10 times. Previously, players had to pay an extra dollar to add a “Megaplier”.

Is it cyclosporosis? Comparison with other digestive diseases

0

At least 843 people in 31 states have been confirmed to have cyclosporiasis. Cyclosporiasis is a food poisoning that has attracted public attention due to its explosive diarrhea symptoms and the number of reported cases.

Of those, 86 people are hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced on July 10.

The CDC tally may underestimate the extent of the outbreak, as state health departments report higher numbers. At least 1,562 cases have been reported in Michigan alone. Nearly 3,000 cases have been reported by state health departments nationwide, according to NBC News.

Although cyclosporiasis has received a lot of public attention, other diseases such as E. coli/STEC and Salmonella enterica are much more common in the United States and can cause severe gastrointestinal symptoms. Compare them below.
