Coinbase’s Super Bowl ad ‘set the mood’ with Backstreet Boys song

Four years after its website crashed, infuriated its audience, and hit rock bottom in the aesthetic rating game, Coinbase is looking to make another failed move upwards.

The cryptocurrency company returned to the high-stakes Super Bowl advertising game on February 8 with a 60-second spot that it hoped would inspire viewers to sing the Backstreet Boys’ “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” alongside low-resolution retro karaoke graphics.

“We’re taking the plunge,” Joe Staples, Coinbase’s vice president of creative, told USA TODAY Sports days before the ad rollout. “Do everything with your whole heart.

“Go as far as you can, and you’ll sleep better.”

Brave viewers might be forgiven for paraphrasing a line from Backstreet’s national anthem, now that they know who’s behind this singalong. Lo and behold, they’re back again..

Ad Meter: The Best and Worst Commercials of 2026

It was four years ago that Coinbase offered a relatively unforgettable 60 seconds of the 2022 Super Bowl 56. Equipped with nothing but a QR code bouncing from corner to corner of the screen, with the background color occasionally changing as a crude keyboard version of the Motown standard “Money (That’s What I Want),” the Pong game cost an estimated $13 million in airtime.

The company’s website crashed when the average viewer couldn’t resist and focused their camera on the QR code. Viewers erupted on social media.

The spot finished last out of 64 contestants on USA TODAY’s Ad Meter, with a 3.81 rating on a scale of 10 at the time, ranking it among the least liked commercials of the decade, ahead only of the 2020 Trump campaign, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. campaign, and U2.

However, this does not necessarily mean that the site was a failure. Curiosity’s website receives 20 million visits per minute, and its app jumps from No. 186 to No. 2 in the app store.

The excitement among viewers was, in a sense, the nadir of what the advertising industry has informally dubbed the “Crypto Bowl.” The game was flooded with sports gambling and cryptocurrency ads as FTX and Crypto.com occupied multiple slots. One of FTX’s charismatic leaders was ultimately sentenced to 25 years in prison and ordered to repay $11 billion for “orchestrating multiple fraudulent schemes.”

Coinbase has been in the public eye and is now the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the US with a valuation of $51 billion.

Since then, Coinbase has changed its creative team, with chief marketing officer Kat Feldon heading up its karaoke efforts, which it hopes will garner similar attention while keeping viewers upbeat.

“I think this ad succeeds in cutting through the noise. Just like the original QR code ad in 2022, it’s creative but perhaps a little controversial,” Feldon says. “Joe and I aren’t here for that, but we do believe it breaks away from the over-sophisticated look of all the other ads around Super Bowl time.

“Additionally, we found this concept to be an ideal follow-up to the bouncy QR code we did in ’22, as it’s highly culturally relevant, completely unexpected, and represents a truly courageous brand new ad for us.”

This year’s Super Bowl slots range from $8 million to $10 million per 30 seconds, and the stakes are only going to get higher. But for Coinbase, the risks are relative, especially when it comes with issues that could hurt a demographic hoping to put some of their hard-earned assets into the product.

“Coinbase didn’t actually buy advertising; we bought vibes, right?” Feldon says. “And the vibe is, cryptocurrencies are for everyone. Coinbase is literally for everyone.

“We’re the only brand that has the courage to step back and let our viewers have fun with us. And that’s what really sets us apart.”

ICE protesters shout ‘no hate, no fear’ near Super Bowl

  • Hundreds of people protested President Trump’s immigration policies near Levi’s Stadium before Super Bowl 60.
  • Despite concerns, law enforcement confirmed that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was not present at the event.
  • Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna also attended the protest and spoke with organizers about his opposition to more funding for Homeland Security.
  • Activists also handed out 15,000 “ICE OUT” towels to fans and encouraged them to display them during the game.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — They came, they marched, they shouted – all under close surveillance. But as many expected, it wasn’t ICE agents patrolling the streets on Super Bowl Sunday.

On February 8, just before kickoff for Super Bowl 60 between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots, hundreds of people occupied a main thoroughfare less than three miles from Levi’s Stadium, slamming President Donald Trump’s mass deportation efforts using Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol.

Their voices grew louder and echoed through nearby buildings, chanting, “No ICE, no KKK, no racist America,” “Dare to fight, dare to win,” and “Our right to resist, our right to rebel.”

The protests capped a week of rallies, marches and demonstrations in the region, culminating in the largest number of participants on game day.

“We have a right to be noticed and heard,” said Laila Salinas, 22, an organizer with CSO San Jose, one of about 20 sponsors of the protest. “We have to make our presence felt on the world’s biggest stage.”

Even though law enforcement officials confirmed last week that ICE would not be conducting enforcement operations at any Super Bowl 60 event, authorities were still keeping a close eye on demonstrators on foot, on bicycles, and on horseback as they made their way down the Great America Parkway. Santa Clara police said no arrests were made during the approximately two-hour event.

California Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna was also watching, spoke with and walked with several protesters, and told USA TODAY that ICE had no presence in the area.

“Our staff received multiple updates throughout the day,” Khanna said, noting that several international soccer matches will be held in his Silicon Valley area in June. “We need to ensure that our staff does not come during the World Cup.”

Mr. Salinas used the opportunity to inform them that Mr. Khanna and his organization have repeatedly reached out to members of Congress to get them involved and ask them to defund the Department of Homeland Security.

Khanna told Salinas he was adamantly “no” to vote on additional Homeland Security funding, as the Department of Homeland Security funding has been extended until Feb. 13, a deadline for Congress to negotiate further. Mr. Khanna told Mr. Salinas that he would continue to keep in touch.

“I told him we need to do more to support what we’re doing, to show that we’re here to protect the community,” Salinas said of pressuring Khanna. “He said he would help us, but actions speak louder than words.”

The turnout was surprising

Doug Wolf, 60, of Boulder Creek, Calif., who carried a sign that read “No Secret Police,” said he was pleasantly surprised by the protesters.

“We don’t need to be here, but you need to get out of here,” Wolf said during the chant. “The Constitution and the Fourth Amendment are being torn to shreds before our eyes. We must stand firm.”

Ariel Ranker, a member of the nonprofit 50501 San Jose, agreed.

“If we don’t stand up and fight back, we may not have a democratic society anymore. This is unacceptable, especially if we still want to call ourselves a democracy,” Ranker, 25, said between chants over a loudspeaker. “This is not the country I grew up in.”

Rankin was excited to hear a call-and-response chant from Santa Clara County Services, Immigrant Rights and Education Network (SIREN) organizer Kimberly Wu. He said it has a “home field advantage” over ICE.

“No hate, no fear,” Wu shouted. “Immigrants are welcome here!”

Hours before the protest, several activists handed out about 15,000 towels with the words “ICE OUT” written on them to fans attending the Super Bowl and asked them to hold them up during the game and during Bad Bunny’s halftime performance to protest the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement.

The gesture, called “Flag in the Stand,” was organized by Contra-ICE, a coalition of artists, musicians, and community organizers.

The design, drawn by political cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz, was inspired by Bad Bunny and features a rabbit wearing the singer’s signature pava (straw hat) while holding a grenade in one hand (a nod to local rockers Green Day, who opened the game, and their multi-platinum album American Idiot). A rabbit kicks a soccer ball inside a block of frozen ice.

One volunteer, Dan Reynolds, said they handed out more than 600 towels to fans. Several people graciously handed it back to him.

“That’s not a bad percentage,” Reynolds said of running out of stock. “I hope they are put to good use.”

Seahawks fan Mickey Ellingsen, 59, of Seattle, said he wished he had caught more.

“That’s right,” Ellingsen said, waving a towel. “I’m proud to be able to do that.”

The conservative organization’s alternative halftime show will feature performances by Kid Rock, Brantley Gilbert, Lee Brice and Gabby Barrett.

Bad Bunny was announced as a performer for the 2026 Super Bowl halftime show on September 28, one week after completing a 31-day stay in Puerto Rico. When he was announced as the Super Bowl headliner, several conservative pundits and President Donald Trump criticized the choice, arguing that he was not a popular enough artist and was a divisive selection.

This will be the second time this year that Bad Bunny will take the stage during the Super Bowl halftime show. He was a featured guest at the halftime show of Super Bowl 55, along with Shakira and Jennifer Lopez. However, this year will be the first time he headlines the country’s biggest concert.

Why Ford’s latest marketing shift is a game-changer for 2026

0

play

  • Ford Motor Co.’s 2026 marketing message will focus on vehicle features.
  • Ford advertises at many large live sporting events, but not the Super Bowl.
  • Ford will likely seek more product placement for its cars in TV shows and movies.

Whether you’re planning a race through the desert or just driving to the grocery store, Ford Motor Company wants you to know there’s a vehicle to meet your needs. Because Ford says it represents capability.

That’s the marketing message the Dearborn-based automaker will promote in 2026. It’s the capabilities of each vehicle in the lineup, from the Bronco’s off-road capabilities to the Mustang’s track performance to the F-Series’ best-selling work trucks, Michael Cope, Ford’s senior director of consumer marketing, told the Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network.

It’s an ambitious message that counters Ford’s quality problems in recent years. In 2025, the company set a record by ending the year with 152 recalls. Ford has already announced a recall of 119,000 vehicles this year due to fire hazards.

This theme of capability also stands in stark contrast to the message Ford used in 2025 to promote itself as an American automaker during its “From America, For America” campaign, which ran from April 3 to July 7, 2025. In doing so, Ford pushed the message that it builds more cars here, employs more workers and offers workers-price deals to buyers than any other automaker. This campaign significantly boosted Ford’s sales in the first half of the year.

And while Ford knows affordability remains a consumer concern, Cope said the automaker’s message this year focuses on what a vehicle can do rather than its price.

“We address affordability in a few different ways,” Cope said, referring to special incentive offers on vehicles. But he said the capabilities are unique to Ford because of the variety of products in the lineup and the capabilities of those products.

The automaker hasn’t disclosed its marketing budget, but Cope said Ford will spend money on advertising across mainstream media, social media and digital platforms. The company also said it will increase its use of product placement in TV shows and movies this year. Consider an adventure show where characters drive vehicles that can be used for work, off-roading, or racing.

But while Ford is focused on reaching ads during live sporting events, don’t expect Ford to run ads during the biggest event of them all: Super Bowl LX. The last time Ford ran an ad during the Super Bowl was in 2017.

“Linear TV is fully prepared to announce the Bronco production, which will not be aired at this year’s Super Bowl,” Cope said. “There’s nothing about this being a hard and fast rule. The Super Bowl has a very specific audience and it’s very large. It’s just that the Super Bowl wasn’t featured in the media buys this year.”

Ford’s first major promotion of the year

But Cope said consumers will likely see Ford ads at “other major sporting events in the coming months.”

Ford’s first major promotion of the year is called “Answer the Call.” Ford began “Answer the Call” during the NFC Championship game, which aired on FOX on January 25th. The 30-second ad featured the Bronco in various search and rescue scenarios, showcasing how the Bronco’s off-road capabilities can help search and rescue teams respond to calls for help. This ad will be running in various media until the end of April.

“The premise of the campaign is to prove what this Bronco is capable of. These organizations rely on it the most, and for them, relying on the Bronco with these rescues shows what the Bronco can offer,” Cope said. “It’s more about Bronco’s ability. If Bronco can do that in that extreme situation, I can rely on Bronco myself.”

The ad coincides with Ford’s partnership with NASAR, an initiative that grew out of an off-road trip Ford CEO Jim Farley took with Bronco customers in Moab, Utah, in late August. Farley saw firsthand how the Bronco helped Utah search and rescue teams navigate treacherous terrain during actual rescue operations, Cope said.

“He came back and talked to our team about how dependent some organizations were on the Ford Bronco. We knew that was true, but not to that extent,” Cope said. “So this campaign we’ve launched is the idea of answering that call.”

Separate from the advertisement, Ford will identify five fully equipped Ford Bronco SUVs to donate to under-resourced search and rescue organizations across the United States. Bronco Badlands model vehicles with the Sasquatch package are specifically designed to traverse tough terrain. Cope said it will have special features such as satellite Internet connectivity for reliable communications anywhere.

Ford has previously donated one Bronco to Kern County Fire and Rescue in California and Teton County Search and Rescue in Wyoming. Ford launched a nationwide search to identify the three final recipients.

What will Ford be like in 2026?

In September 2025, Ford launched its global brand marketing campaign “Ready, Set, Ford.” Its message emphasized that Ford is more than an automaker. We develop products that fit various lifestyles.

Ford’s first 60-second spot was called “Anthem” and featured a series of action shots, including a man speeding, a Ford Mustang racing car hurtling down a track, a Ford F-150 pickup truck in the countryside going off-road to catch a stray cow, and a quick cut to two people riding off-road in a Ford Bronco and jumping off a cliff in an exotic location. The spot ends with the announcer saying: “Someone once said, ‘Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.'” Then the words “Ready, Ready, Ford” appear.

The person who said this line was Henry Ford, the company’s founder.

Cope said the brand’s “Ready, Set, Ford” positioning will continue this year. But Ford will also focus on showing off its vehicles’ performance in three different ways.

The first focuses on off-road capabilities, with Ford highlighting its Bronco and Raptor vehicles. “The superiority we showed at the Baja 1000 Rally shows our capabilities in the off-road side of motorsports,” Ford said of the Raptor.

Next, Cope said Ford will display “adventure vehicles” such as the Bronco Tremor.

In closing, he said, “We have the ability to lead in class with our target audience, the F-Series. We have 49 years of truck leadership with the F-Series. We have an award-winning truck, the Maverick, which just won Truck of the Year. All three of these key pillars come together to demonstrate Ford’s capabilities, and that is the key message we will use in our 2026 marketing.”

EV advertising is also part of the plan

Even though Ford is overhauling its business model to shift spending toward hybrid and gasoline powertrains, Cope said there will still be a spot to promote electric vehicles this year.

“We’re still focused on the Mustang Mach-E, and we’ve had tremendous success with the Mustang Mach-E,” Cope said. “We still have the F-150 Lightning on dealer lots. Next year we’ll see some good messaging on those two products. Then we’ll ramp up for the year after next as we wrap up some of the announcements we’ve made previously.”

Last month, Ford announced it was transitioning its F-150 Lightning from an all-electric vehicle to a long-range electric vehicle as part of a review of its business and products. That means it will have a small gasoline engine and a range of 700 miles.

Regarding previous announcements, Cope is referring to Ford’s announcement in August that it would build a midsize all-electric pickup truck starting at $30,000 when it hits the market in 2027, with several more variants to follow, including the possibility of a midsize electric SUV from the same EV platform.

Ford targeted advertising

The competency message campaign will be seen in Ford’s “mainstream marketing acquisitions” such as television and other mainstream media. Ford will then make more targeted media buys to promote features and deals on specific vehicles to reach consumers who are ready to buy.

“For each of the different nameplates, we highlight three or four different features that we know that segment is disproportionately interested in,” Cope said. “Expedition customers may look very different than Maverick customers, but we are empowering each customer.”

Finally, Ford plans to run advertising to support sales events.

“We communicate the pricing strategy, but ultimately the pricing strategy is developed within Rob Caffle’s team (U.S. sales director) and the Ford business,” Cope said.

Product placement in movies

As for revealing that people might see Ford products incorporated into TV show and movie storylines this year, Cope was modest: “Movie studios would be pretty unhappy if I did that.”

But he added, “Competence and passion are our messages around the Ford framework, so you can imagine the kind of work we’re looking at.”

In 2025, Ford’s product placement included a cameo appearance by Farley on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” when Jimmy Fallon was broadcasting from Detroit. In it, Farley shows Fallon his new Bronco, and when he looks at the gear shift, it says “Other P.” Fallon hits it to see what it does, and both men end up with permed hair.

Another product placement last year was in Amazon’s crime thriller show “Cross,” where the star character drives a Mustang. Finally, to make sure no one would confuse Detroit Lions wide receiver Isaac Tessler with Tesla, another automaker that makes electric cars, Ford loaned Tessler an all-electric 2025 F-150 Ford Lightning to drive. The Ford family, which owns Ford, also owns the Lions.

“We have great partnerships with a number of creative agencies that have ties to Hollywood,” Cope said. “I have monthly meetings about these topics…about which products in film and television align most closely with Ford’s brand positioning. So we just consider them on a case-by-case basis. But how the media environment evolves is an important part of our strategy.”

The same is true on the media side of Ford, he said. Each brand campaign the company runs across its various media channels is reviewed on a case-by-case basis for the right message for its audience. And despite Ford’s current focus on rugged off-roading, Cope acknowledges there’s a vehicle for people who just want to drive the family north to the cabin. Think of Explorer.

“Overall…I think we have the right products in our portfolio to address (all) consumers,” Cope said. “Not every consumer needs to bungee jump or race on the sand, but our vehicles are capable enough to do just that.”

Just about everyone on Earth, and probably even Martians, is wondering who will win Super Bowl 60.

Everyone except Drake, who is important. Fans and sports bettors have been eagerly awaiting the rapper’s pick to make the cut, given the “Drake Curse” that has long haunted sporting events.

After keeping everyone quiet for so long, Drake has finally named the winner of the Super Bowl between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks.

Patriots.

And in typical Drake fashion, he’s putting his money where his mouth is on a $1 million bet. If he wins, his bet will be paid out an additional $1.95 million. That means the rapper will earn $2.95 million for watching more than about three hours of football.

Not too shabby.

However, Drake has been proven to be on the wrong side of history time and time again. Here’s a breakdown of Drake’s bets:

Who did Drake bet on to win the 2026 Super Bowl?

Drake bet $1 million that the Patriots would win Super Bowl 60, for a total payout of $2.95 million.

Why you should include an emergency fund in your retirement savings plan

0

If you haven’t done so already, make this your top priority.

play

One of the reasons saving for retirement is so scary is that there are so many possibilities for mistakes. You may underestimate the amount you need to save and end up short in retirement. Or, you risk investing too much in one investment and incurring huge losses.

But one of the biggest mistakes anyone can make when it comes to saving for retirement is one that most people don’t think is related to retirement at all.

Emergency savings are the key to keeping your retirement plans on track

We think of an emergency fund as a tool to avoid unexpected debts and financial setbacks. However, it can also be seen as a way to smoothly manage household finances, including saving for retirement.

If your emergency fund is low and you have an unexpected expense, you may have to stop contributing to your retirement accounts while you try to put out the current financial fire. Once you’re finally able to start saving again, you’ll need to set aside more money each pay period to retire on time as originally planned.

This is why an emergency fund with at least three to six months of living expenses is one of your best financial tools. If an unexpected expense occurs, you can rely on this money to cover the bill, allowing you to continue your retirement savings as planned.

Once you have the immediate crisis under control, you can focus on slowly rebuilding your emergency fund until you have the funds you need again. That way, you’ll be prepared for the next unexpected expense.

Credit card debt is putting household finances in jeopardy. How to get help.

0

play

  • According to GreenPath Financial Wellness, debt management programs can lower credit card interest rates, waive late fees, and bring delinquent accounts current and stop collection efforts.
  • As word spreads about the 10% credit card limit, some people may mistakenly believe that the 10% limit has completed the transaction, further delaying actual assistance.

Measuring the personal pain that is hitting people buried under credit card debt and other bills often leads to absolute disbelief at today’s incredibly high interest rates.

The average interest rate on credit card debt for accounts with outstanding balances and eventually accruing interest was 22.3%, according to the most recent data released by the Federal Reserve in November. This is up from 16.28% in 2020. However, it is slightly down from the recent spike of 23.37% in Q3 2024.

But that’s not the only shocking number.

People who seriously lose sleep worrying about their bills often find themselves facing a surprising cash crunch each month, having to pay more money than they actually come in each month to cover credit card bills, groceries, car payments, utilities, and other expenses.

How much does the household owe?

Rick Bialobjeski, chief business development officer at GreenPath Financial Wellness, said the average budget deficit at the time someone seeks financial advice has increased significantly over the past five years as prices and interest rates soar.

The average monthly budget shortfall for customers who initially sought counseling from GreenPath jumped from $439 in 2020 to $904 per month in 2025. In 2021, it was as low as $162, he said.

Let it calm down. Some households save close to $1,000 each month.

“People tend to struggle and make things work even when it’s obvious that things aren’t working,” Bialobzeski said. “By the time people contact us, it could be a crisis situation.”

where to find help

Michigan-based GreenPath does not offer loans, but instead offers free debt counseling, including helping consumers create a budget. GreenPath serves the entire United States by phone and internet. (For more information, call 855-982-0062 or visit GreenPath.com.)

In Michigan, in-person counseling is available by appointment at our Detroit office. In-person locations may also be available elsewhere in the United States.

Additionally, consumers can connect with nonprofit counselors who are part of the National Foundation for Credit Counseling. (Visit nfcc.org or call 800-388-2227.) When calling your local nonprofit credit counseling agency, you must enter your zip code.

Bialobzeski said people currently seeking counseling from GreenPass are in worse economic situations than they were in 2020, including having more debt relative to their income and having much lower credit scores, meaning they will have to pay higher interest rates on their loans.

At the time of seeking counseling from GreenPath, the average credit score in 2025 was 582, down from 640 in 2020.

A credit score of 582 is considered “fair” or “subprime” depending on the scoring model. This makes it difficult to obtain new credit. And if you qualify, you’ll pay much higher interest rates than average.

In 2025, the average credit card usage rate for those seeking counseling through GreenPass was 28%, Bialobzeski said.

Burden by credit card

Oddly enough, Bialobzeski said that most consumers who contact GreenPass now aren’t usually struggling because of some random impulse purchase.

Instead, in response to affordability challenges in recent years, many consumers have turned to credit cards to cover everyday expenses. And it can turn into a cruel cycle.

He said people often don’t have extra savings for unexpected expenses and often rely on credit cards.

“When we talk to someone, it’s not a 15-minute conversation,” Bialobzeski said. Instead, your counselor will spend about 45 minutes digging into all your debts, household expenses, and your monthly payments and incoming payments.

“What we found is that budget deficits are widening and people are relying on credit cards to make ends meet each month,” Bialobzeski said.

“You can’t pay off the balance in full. If you don’t pay off the balance in full every month, you’re going to incur interest. And people quickly dig themselves into a hole they can’t get out of,” he said.

GreenPath offers counseling and debt management programs. The average debt amount in GreenPath’s debt management program is $17,667.

Debt management programs can lower interest rates on credit cards, waive late fees and over-the-limit fees, and bring delinquent accounts current and halt collection efforts, Bialobzeski said.

He said that by working with credit card issuers, GreenPath is able to negotiate lower interest rates and payments on credit cards.

“It could be zero,” he said. “In some cases, it could be even higher, such as 9.9%.”

A debt management program can reduce your credit card debt payments from an average of $589 to $390 per month. It can take an average of 50 months to pay off that debt through a debt management program.

The goal is to avoid filing for bankruptcy if possible and typically pay off credit cards and other unsecured debt within five years.

This program has a one-time setup fee of $50. Ongoing monthly fees average $37, but can go up to $75 depending on your debt amount and state of residence.

In 2025, GreenPath worked with more than 65,000 people to pay off nearly $300 million in debt at low interest rates.

As of January, approximately 52,000 people were actively paying down their debts under the GreenPath debt management plan.

Debt management plans are different from debt settlement companies, which often encourage you to stop paying your bills as a way to get your creditors to come to terms with you. Experts warn that this measure could negatively impact credit scores and increase late fees and other fees. Consumer watchdog groups warn that businesses that charge large upfront fees, promise to solve your debt for $1, or advertise “new government programs” to help individuals with credit card debt should be avoided.

It’s not enough to hold on to hope

People facing challenges should not wait to take action. Or you can keep hoping that somehow, all of a sudden, your credit card interest rate will be capped at 10%.

The National Credit Counseling Foundation warned that talk of the proposed 10% cap is “creating a new level of confusion” for many consumers. The fear is that some people may mistakenly believe that the 10% cap is a done deal, further delaying debt resolution support.

President Donald Trump’s call in January for a one-year cap on credit card interest rates of 10% has received much pushback from bankers. President Trump cannot legally issue an executive order that would set a nationwide interest rate cap. Such measures would require legislation to be passed by Congress.

In a speech at the Detroit Economic Club on January 13, President Trump said his proposed one-year mandatory 10% cap on credit card interest rates is part of a series of strategies to lower consumer costs.

“Interest rates are too high,” President Trump said at the Detroit Economic Club.

However, some influential figures are trying to remove the 10% cap. The American Bankers Association, the Consumer Bankers Association, the Independent Community Bankers of America, and others argue that a 10% interest rate cap would reduce the availability of credit.

Opponents argue that the 10% cap currently makes it impossible for credit card issuers to price the risk and cover the costs involved in doing credit card business.

According to the banking industry, consumers may expect fewer loan limits, fewer offers of lower interest rates and more modifications under mandatory caps.

The American Bankers Association estimates that if a 10% cap were in place, more than 4 million consumers in Michigan alone, or at least 72.9% of open accounts, would likely lose access to credit cards.

Industry groups estimate that more than 136 million consumers nationwide, or at least 73.6% of open accounts, would lose access to credit cards if bankers were forced to abide by a 10% cap on credit card interest rates. The American Bankers Association has a website with a state-by-state breakdown at ratecapreality.com so consumers can see the potential impact in each state.

In theory, if a 10% cap were set, credit card issuers could decide to close some accounts that have already been opened, Bialobzeski said. Some reports say the balance on that credit card may have to be transferred to an installment loan and paid back. Of course, bankers don’t want to lose their best customers, so it may be the weaker ones who are hit the hardest.

People who desperately need extra space on their budget may not be able to use credit cards for emergency expenses, he said. Instead, they may turn to high-interest payday loans and other predatory products.

Most Gen Z Americans don’t have emergency savings

A new study by Credit One Bank reveals that 62% of Gen Z Americans have no emergency savings.

Unbranded – Lifestyle

He said one of the bigger concerns about the proposed 10% cap is that it would require the credit card industry to change significantly, including taking steps to reduce access for many consumers.

“Many people who currently rely on credit cards will not have that option in the future,” Bialobzeski said.

The most vulnerable consumers include those whose work hours are unstable, whose pay fluctuates significantly from week to week, and whose monthly payments are minimal.

For now, people still have options to deal with their debts, especially since the 10% mandatory cap on credit card interest rates still needs parliamentary approval.

“What people need to realize is that they can contact their credit card company,” Bialobzeski said. “If they’re having trouble paying off their cards, credit card companies are usually willing to help.”

So the first step consumers should take is to directly ask their credit card issuers if they can lower their rates, he said.

Credit card issuers sometimes lower interest rates, typically between 2% and 12%, for a limited period of time, such as three to nine months, to give individuals time to repay their debts, Bialobzeski said.

An 18-month-old baby girl who had been detained by immigration authorities for several weeks was detained and denied medication after being hospitalized with a life-threatening respiratory illness, according to a lawsuit filed in federal court in Texas.

The child, identified in the lawsuit as “Amalia,” was released by immigration authorities under President Donald Trump’s administration after her parents filed suit on Friday, February 6. His parents, who were also detained, were released as well. The lawsuit sought the release of all three.

According to the complaint, the family was detained during an immigration check-in on Dec. 11 and held at a facility in Dilley, Texas. Amalia was hospitalized from Jan. 18 to Jan. 28 and returned to the Dilley facility during the measles outbreak, according to the complaint.

“Amalia should never have been detained. She almost died in Dilli,” said Elora Mukherjee, the family’s lawyer.

Mukherjee said hundreds of children and families detained in Diri lacked adequate drinking water, healthy food, educational opportunities and proper medical care and should be released.

The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment on Saturday, February 7, but USA TODAY has reached out to DHS for comment.

NBC News first reported on the lawsuit.

Lawsuit claims child was hospitalized with respiratory problems

According to the complaint, Amalia’s parents are from Venezuela and have lived in the United States since 2024 with their Mexican daughter. All three intend to file asylum claims in the United States, according to the complaint.

On January 1, Amalia developed a fever of 104 degrees, began vomiting frequently and had difficulty breathing, according to the complaint.

She was taken to the hospital on Jan. 18 with critically low oxygen saturation and diagnosed with COVID-19, respiratory syncytial virus, viral bronchitis and pneumonia, according to the complaint. She received supplemental oxygen.

Amalia was given a nebulizer and respiratory medication when she was discharged from the hospital, but these were taken away by detention center staff when she returned home, according to the complaint. According to the complaint, the girl had lost 10 percent of her weight and was given energy drinks to help her regain weight, but these were also confiscated by authorities.

Trump administration faces intense scrutiny over immigration strategy

The Trump administration has been accused of high-handed and inhumane tactics, as well as violating court orders while carrying out its mass deportation plan.

A federal judge in Michigan criticized the administration in a ruling that ordered the release of a 5-year-old boy detained by immigration officials in Minnesota. The boy was pictured outside his home wearing a blue bunny hat while federal agents stood nearby in a photo that went viral. The government is now seeking to deport the boy.

Breezy Johnson’s Olympic downhill gold medal is broken and needs fixing

CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy — Breezy Johnson had better stick to her Olympic gold medal.

literally.

On Sunday, February 8, Johnson was jumping up and down celebrating his Olympic downhill title when the gold medal was removed from the ribbon. It’s common for athletes’ medals to become damaged or need repair, but rarely for it to happen this quickly.

“It’s definitely heavy. It’s heavier than I expected,” Johnson said. “I think that’s probably what caused it to break.”

There is a groove at the top of the medal that holds the ribbon, but the part that holds the two pieces together broke.

“It’s not super broken, but it’s a little broken,” Johnson said.

She had the gold medal stuffed in her pocket while giving a post-race interview. When asked if anyone was going to fix it, she jokingly replied that no one in the media had come forward.

“I’ve never been anywhere else,” Johnson said. “I hope someone can fix it.”

Given how crafty Johnson is, she’ll probably come up with a solution herself.

Johnson has a tradition of knitting himself a new headband before a race. She finished her downhill race on Saturday night, but before the race she was still reeling in the remaining thread.

Johnson plans to someday auction off the headband, which is light blue with red and white diagonal stripes, to raise money for charity. When I asked if I could wear it again, since it symbolizes good luck, Johnson was taken aback.

“I have to buy a new one,” she said. “Even if I do well in one thing, I know that if I go back to it, I won’t be lucky anymore.”

President Trump calls Olympian Hunter Hess a “loser” after comment on U.S. team

President Donald Trump called U.S. Olympic skier Hunter Hess a “loser” on social media on Sunday, February 8, in an apparent response to Hess’ comments earlier this week that it would be difficult for him to represent the United States at the 2026 Winter Olympics given the current political divide.

American freestyle halfpipe skier Hess expressed mixed feelings ahead of the opening ceremony on Friday, February 6, saying it was “a little tough” to represent the United States.

“Obviously there’s a lot going on that I’m not a big fan of,” Hess said. “Just because you’re flying the flag doesn’t mean it represents everything that’s going on in the United States.”

President Trump responded to Hess’ comments on Sunday’s Truth Social, calling the Olympian a “real loser.”

“U.S. Olympic skier Hunter Hess, a true loser, said he would not represent his country at the current Winter Olympics,” President Trump wrote on Sunday. “If that’s the case, he shouldn’t have tried out for the team and it’s a shame he’s on the team. It’s so hard to root for a player like this. Let’s make America great again!”

Hess is one of several U.S. Olympians who have mixed feelings about representing their country at the Winter Olympics. Still, Hess added that when you wear the flag, you represent a part of the country that morally aligns with you.

“I’m representing my friends and family back home, the people who have represented America before me, everything that I believe is good about America. I just feel like I’m representing it if it aligns with my moral values,” Hess added.

When are taxes paid? When are refunds paid? Key IRS dates for 2026

0

play

Please check your mailbox. Your W-2 should arrive now, if it hasn’t arrived yet.

Employers were supposed to submit wage and tax returns by the end of January. The Internal Revenue Service has been accepting tax returns since January 26th.

But don’t worry. There is still plenty of time to submit before this year’s deadline.

Here are important dates taxpayers should know:

When is the 2026 filing deadline?

For most of us, 2025 taxes will be due by Wednesday, April 15th. If you don’t plan to submit by then, you can request a six-month extension.

When will I receive my refund?

If you file electronically and choose to receive your refund by direct deposit, the IRS says you’ll likely receive your refund within 21 days. If you mail your paper return, it may take more than four weeks.

What happens if I miss the tax deadline?

If you don’t file your federal tax return on time, the standard penalty is a whopping 5% of the tax owed for each month your return is late, up to 25% of your unpaid balance. If you file a return but don’t pay your outstanding taxes, or if you get an extension, you’ll typically be assessed a much smaller monthly penalty of 0.5% of the amount owed.

Are there any exceptions to the April 15 tax deadline?

yes. The IRS is extending the annual tax deadline for taxpayers who live or do business in disaster-affected areas and those in states with local holidays.

A complete list of disaster-related enhancements can be found on the IRS website.

Extended income tax return filing deadline

If you request an extension, you must submit your return by Thursday, October 15th. It is important to note that an extension does not give you more time to pay your taxes. If you think you owe tax, it’s a good idea to estimate the amount and pay it by April 15 to avoid penalties later.

1099 Deadline

If you’re a freelancer, independent contractor, or earn income from something other than a traditional job, you need to receive your 1099 tax form by February 15th. Employers typically have until the end of January to submit their forms.

W-2 deadline

Employers must send W-2 forms by January 31st.

Quarterly tax deadline

If you earn income that is not subject to withholding, you generally must pay estimated taxes to the IRS. This can be done quarterly or through one annual estimate. Annualized forecasts are scheduled to be announced on April 15th.

2026 quarterly payments are due by the following dates:

◾ First payment: April 15th.

◾ Second payment: June 15th.

◾ Third payment: September 15th.

◾ Fourth payment: January 15, 2027.

What’s happening with Bitcoin and what to keep in mind in the long term?

0

Reaching this mark means lower future returns, which is a reasonable expectation.

play

It’s almost impossible to argue with the assumption that probably every investor would have wanted to own Bitcoin (Cryptocurrency: BTC) Over the past 10 years. That’s because the price of this leading digital asset has soared 19,300% in this period, even after plummeting in recent weeks.

However, Bitcoin We are still experiencing a period of extreme volatility. This is exactly what is happening right now, with the stock trading down 41% from its peak. While so-called experts always try to sound smart and act as if they know exactly what’s going on, the reality is that it’s extremely difficult to pinpoint the reason for the recent plunge in major cryptocurrencies.

At the end of the day, it’s always important for investors to maintain a long-term focus. That being said, I predict that the price of Bitcoin will reach $850,000 in 10 years.

If you look at the mathematics

For Bitcoin to reach $850,000 by early 2036, its price would need to rise by approximately 1,060% (based on its current price of $73,200). Astute readers will quickly understand that this means much lower. rate of return than what has been achieved in the past. Given that Bitcoin is no longer an esoteric financial asset and is recognized on a global scale, profits should decline going forward. Naturally, as investment risk fades, there is less upside potential.

Comparing Bitcoin to gold makes the most sense. The estimated value of all the gold on earth is more than $34 trillion. I believe there is a good chance that Bitcoin’s market capitalization will reach half that of precious metals, or about $17 trillion.

Bitcoin’s market capitalization is currently $1.26 trillion. It would need to rise more than 13 times to reach expected levels. Even if it reaches that point, there will still be meaningful upside. For comparison, the world stock market and bond market Together they amount to hundreds of trillions of dollars.

The ultimate showdown between Bitcoin and gold

for Gold’s strong performance Compared to Bitcoin over the past few years, investors may be critical of the cryptocurrency gradually approaching the valuation of the shiny metal. That’s understandable.

However, I think it is important to pay attention to the fundamental characteristics of Bitcoin. Yes, this is a relatively new financial asset. However, it is portable, tradable, divisible, censorship resistant, and verifiable. And there is a limit to the supply, which gives rise to its greatest feature, scarcity.

Of course, those in charge of managing large pools of capital – central banks – need to start looking at Bitcoin the same way they look at gold. I think we will see something like this happen over time as Bitcoin continues to penetrate the traditional financial services industry and continue to fascinate regulators and politicians.

Dalai Lama says he never met or interacted with Jeffrey Epstein

play

The Dalai Lama said in a statement that he has never met or interacted with Jeffrey Epstein, following attempts to link him to the late sex offender.

“Some recent media reports and social media posts regarding the ‘Epstein File’ seek to connect His Holiness the Dalai Lama with Jeffrey Epstein,” the Office of the Tibetan Spiritual Leader said in a news release. “We can unequivocally confirm that the Pope has never met Jeffrey Epstein, nor has he authorized anyone on his behalf to meet or interact with him.”

It is not currently clear what kind of reports or posts His Holiness the Dalai Lama (90 years old) is referring to.

The statement comes after the Trump administration recently released files from a government investigation into the disgraced investor. Although the Dalai Lama’s work has been mentioned in several documents, he has never been formally accused of wrongdoing in connection with the accused sex traffickers.

The Justice Department released 3 million pages of Epstein files on January 30, according to a letter obtained by USA TODAY. Members of Congress will be able to see unredacted versions of the records starting Feb. 9, according to a letter obtained by USA TODAY.

Collectively, the released files and emails link dozens of celebrities to Epstein, including President Donald Trump, former President Bill Clinton, Elon Musk and others. No one was charged with any crime related to Epstein.

Many of the relationships had already been made public. Trump and Epstein, for example, were friendly decades ago but fell out in the 2000s.

Additionally, the recently released files also include a former U.S. senator, a Norwegian princess, a NASCAR driver, and several wealthy men who did business with Epstein. No one has been charged, and in some cases, their participation in Epstein’s orbit simply indicates that they had social or business ties to him.

What is Maha? Mike Tyson talks about obesity in Super Bowl ad

0

play

Boxing legend Mike Tyson will appear in a Super Bowl ad promoting healthy eating and speak in a TV spot in line with the Trump administration’s “Make America Healthy Again” agenda.

“We are the most powerful country in the world, and we have the fattest, f**kiest people,” Tyson said in a 30-second ad posted on social media on February 6.

Tyson opens a black-and-white video in which he talks about how his 25-year-old sister died of a heart attack, saying her death was due to obesity, and ends by nibbling on an apple next to his son. The words “Processed Food Kills” and the popular MAHA slogan “Eat Real Food” were displayed on the screen. The ad ends with the name of the government’s website outlining the government’s newly revised food pyramid and dietary advice.

The ad was paid for by the nonprofit MAHA Center, an advocacy group led by Tony Lyons, one of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s allies.

Tyson also said in the ad that he used to “eat everything” and called himself “fat and dirty.” He said his nutrition-related “self-loathing” became so severe that he sometimes felt like hurting himself.

“We have to do something about processed food in this country,” Tyson said.

President Kennedy reshared the video on his social media pages, repeating the “eat real food” mantra and claiming it was the solution to America becoming “the sickest nation in the developed world.”

What is Maha?

The movement, which stands for “Make American Healthy Again,” has become a central element of the Kennedy-led Trump administration’s approach to health care policy.

Immediately after taking office in 2025, President Trump signed an executive order creating the Commission to Make America Healthy, with a number of goals to improve the health of Americans, including lowering rates of chronic disease in adults and children.

This movement is far-reaching and involves, in part, the use of artificial dyes in food, ultra-processed foods, and toxins. Doctors and other experts say some of MAHA’s recommendations, such as prioritizing fresh fruits and vegetables in the diet, are good guidelines for the country’s health.

But MAHA has also branched out into more controversial initiatives that have been criticized by many health experts and groups, including making significant changes to its vaccine recommendations and claims about the causes of autism.

Kennedy appeared alongside President Donald Trump in September to introduce new recommendations linking pregnant women who take Tylenol to children being diagnosed with autism, even though health organizations and other medical groups around the world say no conclusive link has been found.

Kennedy has long been a leading voice in the anti-vaccination community. In his first year leading HHS, he reshaped the government’s vaccine advisory committee, replacing independent experts with a number of appointees also aligned with MAHA’s agenda.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and its revamped advisory committee weakened the government’s childhood vaccine recommendations, which traditionally underpin state mandates that dictate which shots students must receive before attending school.

Under Kennedy, the government also issued new guidelines for food and drug advertising and proposed proposals to increase breastfeeding rates through a “safe supply of donor human milk.”

Additionally, the Secretary made significant changes to HHS research. The ministry announced last year that it would scale back mRNA vaccine development activities under its biomedical research division.

Critics say some of Kennedy’s moves contradict established science, foster public distrust of mainstream medicine, and use his position to promote fringe views.

The men’s singles competition begins with the short program on February 10th and concludes with the free skate on February 13th, after which medals will be awarded.

ice dancing vs figure skating

Ice dancing does not involve jumps or lifts, as there are in pair figure skating. Ice dance consists of two sections: rhythm dance and free dance.

Ilia Marin’s parents

Marin was born in the field of figure skating. His mother, Tatiana Marinina, was originally from the Soviet Union, specifically Siberia, and represented Uzbekistan at the World Figure Skating Championships for 10 consecutive years. She finished eighth at the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics, where Tara Lipinski won the gold medal and Michelle Kwan won the silver medal. Marinina finished fourth at the 1999 World Championships and competed in the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, but withdrew after the short program due to influenza.

Marinin’s father, Roman Skorniakov, represented Uzbekistan in the same two Olympics, in 1998 and 2002, finishing 19th in both. He and Marinina married in 2000, became skating coaches in the United States, and moved to the northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C., where Ilia was born in December 2004. His parents worried that Skolniakov was too difficult to pronounce, so he adopted the Russian masculine form of his mother’s surname.

The standings of the team matches entering the third day are as follows: Only five teams remain.

  1. US: 44 points
  2. Japan: 39 points
  3. Italy: 37 points
  4. Georgia: 35 points
  5. Canada: 32 points

A figure skating routine consists of two scores: a technical component score and a program component score. As the name suggests, the Technical Element score concerns the jumps, spins, and step sequences in your performance. Program component scores consist of composition, presentation, and skating skills.

Quad God Figure Skater: Nickname of Ilya Marinin

Simply put, Ilya Marin has the most versatile jumps of any figure skater in history. He launched seven quadruple jumps into the air in a single long program at last month’s Grand Prix Final, becoming the first skater to land a quadruple axel.

Marinin’s username used to be Lutz God, but he changed it to Quadruple God after landing his first quadruple jump.

“I didn’t really think about it…As the days went by, people started asking, ‘Why did you call yourself Quad God, when you could only do one jump?'” he said on USA TODAY’s new Olympic podcast, Milan Magic, whose first episode airs Saturday. “And I thought, ‘Oh, okay, maybe I should be a quad god.'” From there, he found a rhythm, landing quad after quad, and of course landing his first quad axel. ”

“In the most humbling way possible, I think it definitely helped not only my confidence in skating in general, but also the feeling that I deserve to be recognized for who I am.”

Listen to “Milan Magic” on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Watch the full episode on YouTube or USA TODAY.

Quad Axel in figure skating: how Ilia Marin trained for it

Marinin said on USA TODAY’s new Olympic podcast “Milan Magic” with Christine Brennan and Brian Boitano, the first episode of which airs Saturday, that he likes to skate the entire program at least once a day. But that doesn’t mean every jump in that practice session has to be a quad. It depends on how his body feels.

“For me, to maintain stamina, just to maintain stamina, at least the standard base can be all triple jumps. But of course, depending on how I’m feeling and how my training is going, I can say, ‘Maybe tomorrow I can go for a full quad layout. Or maybe I can do a full quad and do the rest triple.’

“I think the main focus for me is just doing the whole program, all the jumps, all the spins, and getting that muscle memory in my head, because a lot of times, especially for me, I think if I’ve done a certain amount of triple jumps and I’m used to it, I can go and quadruple jumps are going to be a little bit easier, too, because I’ve been practicing muscle memory for a while.”

President Trump’s interview will be aired before the Super Bowl. Time/viewing method

President Donald Trump may not be attending this year’s Super Bowl, but he’s still taking part in one of the big game traditions.

A prerecorded interview with the president will be broadcast on NBC prior to the game, the network previously announced.

The interview, conducted by NBC news anchor Tom Lamas, was filmed at the White House on February 4, four days before the NFL’s biggest night.

Portions of the interview aired Feb. 4, first on “NBC Nightly News” and then on NBC News NOW’s “Top Stories with Tom Llama.”

The segment, which will air during NBC’s Super Bowl pregame show on February 8, will feature additional interviews that have not yet aired.

It’s a tradition during Super Bowl week for the station, which broadcasts the big game, to interview the sitting president.

How to watch President Trump’s Super Bowl pregame interview

President Trump’s Super Bowl interview will be broadcast during the Super Bowl LX pregame broadcast on NBC and Peacock Network.

The pregame show begins at 1:00 PM ET and will be broadcast on NBC and Peacock until the game begins at 6:30 PM ET.

NBC has not announced the exact time Trump’s interview will air, but the pregame show will also include various other interviews with players and coaches.

Streaming providers that carry NBC will broadcast the show live, including Fubo, Hulu + Live TV, YouTube TV, and DIRECTV.

Peacock offers three subscription options: Select for $7.99 per month, Premium for $10.99 per month, and Premium Plus for $16.99 per month.

Presidential interviews are a Super Bowl week tradition

Ever since CBS interviewed former President George W. Bush during Super Bowl week in 2004, it has been a tradition for the network hosting the game to speak with the president.

President Barack Obama continued this practice throughout his two terms in office, but Trump and former President Joe Biden consistently did not participate in interviews during Super Bowl week throughout the four years of their respective terms.

During Trump’s first term as president, he gave interviews three times in four years, on Fox in 2017 and 2020 and on CBS in 2019. When NBC hosted the Super Bowl in 2018, he chose not to hold a sit-in.

Biden participated in interviews during Super Bowl week in 2021 and 2022, but was absent in 2023 and 2024.

As for President Trump’s second term so far, he was interviewed on Fox last year before the Super Bowl.

President Trump will not attend this year’s Super Bowl

Trump is a longtime friend of New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, but he has no plans to attend a team game in person this year.

He said in a January 23 interview with the New York Post that the fight was “too far away.” This year’s Super Bowl will be held on February 8th at Levi’s Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers, in Santa Clara, California.

The president also told the outlet he was dissatisfied with musical performers, including prominent Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny and rock band Green Day, who have criticized President Trump.

“I’m against them,” the president said, but stressed that was not a reason to avoid the match. “I think it’s a terrible choice. It just instills hatred. It’s terrible.”

Last year, Trump became the first sitting president to attend the Super Bowl. It was held in New Orleans.

Will Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl Halftime Show Be Political?

0

“The NFL wants to talk to the whole world, and Bad Bunny is already doing that,” said KCRW host Sam Sanders. So should we expect a grand political statement?

play

At the Grammy Awards on February 1st, Bad Bunny received a standing ovation when he said “ICE Out” during his first acceptance speech of the night. Later, when he made history by becoming the first Spanish-language album to win Album of the Year, he dedicated the Grammy to “all those who had to leave their homeland, their homeland, to pursue their dreams.”

Two days later, White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt criticized Bad Bunny for “trying to demonize law enforcement.” Later in the week, Levitt said, referring to Turning Point USA’s counter halftime show, that President Donald Trump “would prefer a Kid Rock performance over Bad Bunny.”

With only days left until Sunday’s Super Bowl, the 31-year-old reggaeton artist is in the spotlight, and not just for his music.

“He probably won’t even do the most political halftime show on immigration,” said Sam Sanders, host of KCRW’s “The Sam Sanders Show.” When JLo and Shakira co-headlined in 2020, they “put kids in mock cages to shine a light on Donald Trump’s immigration policies in his first term. Bad Bunny has already said enough to get political.”

“The halftime show is secondary at this point,” he added.

The NFL partnered with Jay-Z and Roc Nation to create the Apple Music Halftime Show in 2019, and since then headliners have included The Weeknd, Usher, Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar, and more.

“Since then, there has been a lot of reporting as if a lot of halftime shows were a problem because they were too political,” Sanders said. However, the evaluation remains unchanged. Lamar’s 2025 halftime show performance drew 133.5 million viewers, making it the most-watched performance of all time.

And if viewers knew where to look beyond actor Samuel L. Jackson, who appeared as Uncle Sam, and backup dancers lining up in white, red, and blue to create the illusion of the Stars and Stripes, Lamar’s halftime set spoke to the black experience, racial injustice, and referenced Gil Scott-Heron’s famous 1971 colloquial poem, “The Revolution Won’t Be Televised.”

It was a nod to how art and music have been used to advance culture and spark social movements while being entertaining.

“Historically, music and art have been political,” says Darlene Lopez, founder and managing director of Evoke Creative. “But I feel it’s a little unfair how much black and brown artists are expected to make political statements.”

Does Bad Bunny owe his fans a grand political statement at the Super Bowl?

Bad Bunny’s political stance on issues particularly affecting Puerto Rico and the Latinx community has been strong from the beginning.

During Trump’s first term in 2017, two hurricanes hit the island in quick succession, including Hurricane Maria, and the “Turista” artist criticized the president’s response and lack of aid to Puerto Rico. He has spoken out against transphobia, colonialism and gentrification in Puerto Rico, and returned from a trip to Europe in 2019 to protest when Puerto Ricans were demanding the resignation of Governor Ricardo Rosselló.

“There’s also expectations for Bad Bunny because he’s shown time and time again that it’s important to him and his brand,” Lopez added. On “El Apagón,” from 2022’s Un Verano Sin Ti, “he manages to make music that makes you shake your butt while also dealing with power outages in Puerto Rico,” she says.

Petra Rivera Rideau, a professor at Wellesley College and an academic expert on reggaeton, says Bad Bunny’s approach is “always Puerto Rican.”

“He speaks out about these things because he is a concerned citizen, not because he feels obligated to do so as a public figure,” she said.

“An artist’s job is to show off his art.”

For Vanessa Diaz, a professor at Loyola Marymount University and co-creator of the Bad Bunny Syllabus Project, the answer to whether four-time Spotify Global Top Artists and other celebrities with huge platforms owe the public anything other than their art is two-fold.

“I don’t think artists owe anything to anyone,” Diaz says. “What artists owe them is to be their true selves. And if it’s a grand political statement, then so be it, and if it’s not, then it’s not. An artist’s job is to perform and share their art in a way that feels true to who they are as an artist, and Bad Bunny always does that.”

Bad Bunny’s authenticity meant representing Puerto Rico, Díaz added, and “we focused specifically on performing in Spanish, Puerto Rican Spanish, and not catering to the English market in that way.” “You can’t underestimate how political it is.”

For Sanders, the halftime show is a sign of the NFL’s global ambitions, and it’s almost disrespectful to focus solely on politics.

“If you make the conversation just about American politics and Bad Bunny, you’re missing the point,” he says. “It’s time for America to realize we’re not alone in this room. The NFL wants to talk to the whole world, and Bad Bunny is already doing that.”
