Elana Myers Taylor and Kylie Humphries win gold and bronze in monobob

CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy — Elana Myers Taylor and Kylie Armbruster Humphries are once again Olympic medalists.

The bobsled queens placed first and third in the women’s monobob event held at the Cortina Sliding Center on Monday, February 16th.

It was the first gold medal in Meyers-Taylor’s legendary career and her sixth overall, tying her with Bonnie Blair for the most medals by an American woman in Winter Olympic history. Myers-Taylor also became the second black woman to win an individual gold medal at the Winter Olympics. She won her first Olympic medal (bronze) in Vancouver in 2010.

“I still can’t believe it. I still can’t even explain in words what it means to win this gold medal,” Meyers-Taylor said with a smile. “It’s still surreal, but it’s still everything, and it’s still nothing, because at the end of the day, in six days, you’re going to have a school drop-off in the middle of Texas.”

Armbruster Humphries has won five medals in five Olympics, including the monobob gold medal won by Team USA at the 2022 Beijing Winter Games. She also won gold medals in the women’s two-man bobsled at the Vancouver Games and the 2014 Sochi Games.

“Everything is different,” said Armbruster Humphries, whose son Alden was born in June 2024. “This one in particular ties in with my mother’s journey over the past year and a half.” “There were no guarantees, so I really went into this race just trying to be the best version of myself that I could be for myself and my son.”

Myers-Taylor and Armbruster-Humphries both set records on their third run, closing the gap on Germany’s Laura Nolte, who led each of the first three runs. Meyers-Taylor had a great final run, putting pressure on Nolte to get clean if he wants to win gold.

However, Nolte made a serious mistake early on and was unable to recover from that. Meyers-Taylor finished with a total time of 3:57.93 over four runs, 0.04 seconds ahead of Nolte (3:57.97). Armbruster Humphries (3:58.05) finished 0.12 seconds behind.

Fellow Team USA bobsledder Keisha Love finished seventh.

This is the second event of the 2026 Winter Olympics where Team USA has had multiple athletes on the podium. On Saturday, February 14th, Jaelyn Kauf and Liz Lemley won silver and bronze medals, respectively, in the women’s dual moguls.

Meyers-Taylor never finished outside the top three in six races in five Olympic Games, making her the most decorated woman in bobsled history. Four years ago, she won a silver medal in the women’s monobob event at the first Olympic Games in Beijing.

Her latest victory came in 2022, at the age of 41, just three years after giving birth to her second son, Noah. The two boys, including their eldest son Nico (born in 2020), watched the Myers-Taylor race from accessible seats at the Cortina Sliding Center.

“My sons are the reason I’m able to keep doing this. My sons are the reason I’m able to keep going,” Myers-Taylor said. “At the end of the day, it doesn’t mean anything, because I’m still just a mom to them. I got more sparkly things to hang around my neck, but at the end of the day, they just want to be held and cuddled, and that’s what happens.”

Armbruster-Humphries, 40, made his Olympic debut in 2010 and represented Canada in Vancouver, Sochi (2014) and PyeongChang (2018) before switching to Team USA in 2019. She became a US citizen in 2021, five years after immigrating to the US with her husband Travis Armbruster in 2016.

Humphries was diagnosed with stage IV endometriosis in 2021 and underwent IVF treatment to become a mother.

“As with how my birth turned out and the IVF process in general, there are no guarantees and there are no guarantees on medals,” Armbruster-Humphries said. “So I’m very proud to have him and be here. It’s like having my cake and eating it too.”

Myers-Taylor and Armbruster-Humphries will return to the track on Tuesday, February 17th for the first official two-woman training run. Myers-Taylor will be accompanied by pusher Jadyn O’Brien, while Armbruster-Humphries will be paired with Jasmine Jones. O’Brien and Jones are both Olympic newcomers.

The first two of the four heats will be on Friday, February 20th, and the third and final medal heat will be on Saturday, February 21st. All four heats are added together and the one with the shortest total time wins.

President Trump slams Maryland Governor Wes Moore over Potomac sewage spill

play

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump said the federal government would step in to “protect” the Potomac River after a major sewer line burst, accusing Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, a Democrat with whom he has been sparring, of gross mismanagement.

On January 19, a sewer system in Montgomery County, Maryland, collapsed, spilling more than 200 million gallons of wastewater into the Potomac River in the Washington, D.C., area. President Trump, who is seeking to assert federal control over Democratic-run cities and states, said in a Feb. 16 social media post: “I am directing federal authorities to immediately take the necessary controls, direction, and coordination to protect the Potomac River, the National Capital Region’s water supply, and our precious national resources in our nation’s capital.”

The University of Maryland called the incident “one of the largest sewage spills in U.S. history,” and said researchers detected high concentrations of fecal-related bacteria and disease-causing pathogens in the river, raising urgent public health concerns and highlighting the risks posed by aging wastewater infrastructure.

“The federal government has no choice but to intervene,” Trump said in the post, adding that the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which has undergone significant staffing cuts since Trump took office, would coordinate the response.

President Trump singled out Moore, who he plans to exclude from a bipartisan event at the White House this week, along with Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, in a Truth social post claiming local leaders are unprepared to deal with the spill.

“As a result of gross mismanagement by local Democratic leaders, especially Maryland Governor Wes Moore, a massive ecological disaster is occurring on the Potomac River,” Trump wrote. “This governor can’t rebuild bridges either. It’s clear that local governments can’t adequately respond to this disaster.”

“We cannot allow incompetent local ‘leaders’ to turn a river in the heart of Washington into a disaster zone,” President Trump said in a post referring to the Palisades wildfires in California. “Democrats’ power war has real consequences.”

Asked about Moore later in a Q&A with reporters, President Trump said the Democrat had done a “terrible job” as governor. Trump added: “He’s not doing his job. We need to get the federal government involved to solve the problem, because he can’t fix anything.”

Moore’s press secretary, Ammar Moussa, fired back at Trump’s social media posts in a lengthy statement, saying the federal government was responsible for the leak and that the Potomac Interceptor was responsible for the leak. Interceptor serves parts of Virginia and Maryland.

“The president’s facts are wrong again,” Musa said.

A spokesperson for the governor said Maryland authorities were on the scene “within hours” of the breach and accused the Trump administration of “shirking responsibility” and putting the public’s health at risk. He also accused the federal Environmental Protection Agency of missing a hearing in the Maryland General Assembly on the issue last week.

“Clearly the Trump administration didn’t get the memo that they were actually supposed to be in charge here,” he said.

“If the federal government is willing to act now, we will continue to respond collaboratively, as always, and keep the public informed about the federal government’s plans to repair the damage,” Moosa added. “The Potomac River is not a talking point, and the people of this region deserve serious leadership in a timely manner.”

The EPA said in a statement that it has deferred its request for clarification from the state Legislature because the D.C. Water Authority and the state of Maryland are leading the response and monitoring of the sewage spill. The agency said it is working to ensure a response occurs as soon as possible and plans to launch a public webpage summarizing its involvement.

Anderson Cooper to quit “60 Minutes”

Anderson Cooper is leaving “60 Minutes” after nearly 20 years as a correspondent on the CBS News program.

“Being a correspondent for 60 Minutes has been one of the great honors of my career. I’ve had the opportunity to tell great stories and work with some of the best producers, editors and camera crews in the industry,” Cooper said in a statement provided to USA TODAY on Feb. 16.

The statement continued: “For nearly 20 years, I have juggled my jobs at CNN and CBS, but now that I have young children, I want to spend as much time as possible with them while they still want to spend time with me.”

The journalist will officially leave the show when his current contract expires.

Cooper, who has worked at CNN since December 2001 and is the host of “Anderson Cooper 360,” has garnered several Emmy Awards and nominations for his work on the Sunday night news magazine, which is in its 58th season.

His most recent appearance was on the Sunday, February 15th episode of “60 Minutes” in the “Last Minute” segment.

CBS News has gone through several shakeups since Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison appointed Free Press founder and opinion writer Bari Weiss as editor-in-chief in October. Her hiring sparked controversy over her lack of experience in news broadcasting.

The network’s sudden decision to cut off a segment on “60 Minutes” featuring a huge prison in El Salvador housing immigrants deported from the United States, hours before airing in December, sparked backlash and accusations that it was politically motivated.

The following month, “Inside CECOT,” which CBS initially said required additional coverage, aired with details including comments from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

George W. Bush publishes essay on Substack and George Washington

The 43rd president of the United States launched a Substack site on February 16th with a 1,500-word tribute to his predecessor.

play

It seems like everyone has a Substack these days, including President George W. Bush.

43rd On February 16, the US president launched his own blog on the site with a 1,500-word tribute to another George, President George Washington.

“Few qualities have inspired me more than Washington’s humility,” President Bush wrote. “Our first president could have remained omnipotent, but twice he chose not to. In doing so, he set a standard for all presidents to follow.”

This essay is part of a new bipartisan history initiative created by the group More Perfect for 250 people in the country.th Anniversary. As part of the project, the group will post essays by celebrities and historians about each U.S. president up through President Barack Obama on a weekly Substack called “In Pursuit.”

Future issues include an essay by Mr. Obama on President Abraham Lincoln, an essay by Chief Justice John Roberts on President William Howard Taft, and a tribute to President Theodore Roosevelt by his successor decades later, President Bill Clinton.

The project is led by former US archivist Colleen Shogan, who was fired by President Donald Trump in 2025 without giving any reason. Trump is not included in the list of essayists on the project’s website.

One George Reflects on Another George

In his essay on Washington, President Bush reflected on the first president’s willingness to cede power, both as commander of the Army and as president, his loyalty to his country, and his accomplishments, including avoiding war and stabilizing a burgeoning economy.

“One of the reasons Washington accomplished all this, according to most historians, was by acknowledging that he might not be up to the task. He called in experts to make the arguments before him,” Bush wrote.

“For me, that lesson meant recognizing what I didn’t know as president, surrounding myself with advisers who knew what I didn’t know, and listening to them.”

President Bush also acknowledged Washington’s flaws in this paper. The article was published hours before a judge ruled against the Trump administration’s removal of exhibits on the history of slavery at Washington’s former mansion in Philadelphia. Bush said the first president’s ownership of others was a “stain” on his “pure private and public life.”

Still, President Bush described Washington as “exceptional,” “indispensable” and a man of “integrity.”

“Without him, there would be no America. And without America, the world would be a very different, darker place.”

Robert Duvall dies – The Godfather and Apocalypse Now icon dies at 95

One of Hollywood’s most popular character actors, Robert Duvall won one Oscar, two Emmys, and four Golden Globes during his extraordinary career.

play

Robert Duvall, the Academy Award-winning actor known for Hollywood classics such as “The Godfather” and “Apocalypse Now,” has died. He was 95 years old.

Duvall died “peacefully” at her home in Middleburg, Virginia, on February 15, her attorney confirmed. He was with his wife, Luciana Duvall.

“To the world, he was an Academy Award-winning actor, director, and storyteller. To me, he was everything,” Luciana Duvall wrote on Facebook. “His passion for his craft was matched only by his deep love of characters, great food, and holding court.

“In each of his many roles, Bob gave his all to the characters and the truths of the human spirit they represented. In doing so, he left a lasting and unforgettable legacy on all of us.”

During his seven-decade acting career on stage, television and film, Duvall has played an astonishing range of strong-willed characters, earning seven Oscar nominations and winning Best Actor for his role as a down-and-out country singer in 1983’s Tender Mercies. He also won two Primetime Emmy Awards and four Golden Globe Awards for his work.

He played a wide range of unforgettable men, from Mafia lawyer Tom Hagen in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1972 film The Godfather to surfing and napalm-loving Lt. Col. Bill Kilgore in Coppola’s 1979 Vietnam War epic Apocalypse Now. In it, Duvall says, “I love the smell of napalm in the morning. … It smells like victory.”

In 1979, Bull Meachum, the domineering Marine pilot he played in The Great Santini, hit the big screen and was nominated for another Oscar. For reference, that same year he appeared as General Dwight D. Eisenhower in the miniseries Ike: Era of War.

On television, he played Joseph Stalin in 1992’s Stalin, Nazi Adolf Eichmann in 1996’s The Man Who Captured Eichmann, and Texas Ranger Captain Augustus “Gus” McRae in the 1989 miniseries Lonesome Dove.

Still, Duvall, who was obsessed with tango dancing when he wasn’t acting, felt that all of these characters came from within.

“It has to be, you’re the one under there,” Duvall told CBS’ “60 Minutes” in 2004. “You’re trying to interpret someone and let it come out of yourself.”

Born Robert Selden Duvall on January 5, 1931, to career naval officer (and later admiral) William Howard Duvall and actress Mildred Virginia, Duvall told USA TODAY in 2014 that his mother was “in charge” of his development.

“When the soldier returned, she would unconsciously give him authority to run the family until he left again,” Duvall said. “That never happened to him.”

After a brief stint in the military, Duvall began his acting career in off-Broadway plays in New York City, where he befriended and often became roommates with up-and-coming actors Dustin Hoffman, Gene Hackman, and James Caan. A memorable stage role led to Duvall’s major film debut, where he played the mute but memorable role of Boo Radley in 1962’s A Tale of Alabama.

But Duvall struggled to stand out even in key bit roles, such as the dastardly “Lucky” Ned Pepper, who had a deadly horseback battle with John Wayne’s one-eyed U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn in the classic 1969 Western “True Grit,” a role that won Wayne his only Oscar.

His breakout role was in 1972’s The Godfather as Hagen, an indecipherable Irishman who is the loyal adoptive family consigliere of the Corleone clan. Duvall reprized the role in the acclaimed 1974 sequel, The Godfather: Part II.

Described by People magazine as “Hollywood’s No. 1 No. 2 leading man,” Duvall did not appear in Coppola’s 1990 trilogy finale, The Godfather Part III, after a pay dispute compared to Al Pacino, who played family head Michael Corleone.

“If they paid Pacino twice what they paid me, that’s fine, but not three or four times as much. That’s what they did,” Duvall said on “60 Minutes” of his decision to sit out the final game.

Duvall’s most widespread acclaim was for his supporting role in Coppola’s Apocalypse Now. As a shirtless Kilgore, he required his men to surf even in the midst of intense combat. Throughout his career, Duvall enjoyed telling fan stories about Kilgore’s famous lines.

“People come up to me on the street and say, ‘I love the smell of napalm in the morning,’ as if I never knew that and forgot it after I said it,” Duvall said with a laugh on Bob Costas’ talk show “Later” in 1991. “It’s like, ‘Enough is enough.'”

Duvall achieved cult-level status as Texas Ranger McCray in Lonesome Dove, which was based on the novel of the same name by Larry McMurtry.

“I remember walking into the diner one day with ‘Lonesome Dove,’ and I said, ‘Guys, we’re making the Godfather of Westerns,'” Duvall told the Los Angeles Times in 2014.

In 2021, he named the film to USA TODAY as his proudest performance. “In America, Westerns are our genre. The British have Shakespeare, the French have Molière, the Russians have Chekhov, but we have Westerns,” Duvall said.

At the 1989 Emmy Awards, the four-part series received seven wins out of 18 nominations, including Best Actor in a Miniseries for Duvall. “I told myself I could retire now. I accomplished something,” he told Esquire.

Duvall, who has been married four times, never seriously considered retiring from acting. In 2002, he starred in, wrote, produced, and directed the crime thriller Assassination Tango with his Argentinian partner Luciana Pedraza, who became Duvall’s fourth wife in 2004 and shares his birthday.

At 84, Duvall, who played beleaguered country judge Joseph Palmer in The Judge, alongside his urbane lawyer son Robert Downey, earned his seventh Oscar nomination for the unforgettable screen drama, making him the oldest actor nominated since Christopher Plummer.

Duvall rose to prominence in 2018 when he played racist Chicago political operative Tom Mulligan in Steve McQueen’s Widows. In 2021, he appeared in the high school football drama “12 Mighty Orphans,” and in 2022, he appeared in Adam Sandler’s basketball comedy “Hustle.”

The actor told Esquire that the search for the next perfect role will never end for as long as he can stand it.

“I’ve done a lot of crap, but I’ve also done a lot of good things,” Duvall said. “You always wish you had one more, it’s like a great jumping horse rider is always looking for a horse. of horse. “

Logan Paul sells rare Pokemon card for $16.4 million at auction

Logan Paul bought a Pikachu Illustrator card for $5.275 million in 2021, setting a world record for the most expensive Pokemon card sold in a private sale.

play

How much would you pay for a super rare Pokemon card?

On Monday, February 16, YouTube creator turned WWE personality Logan Paul sold a 1998 Pokémon Pikachu Illustrator card wrapped in a custom diamond necklace for $16.492 million at Goldin’s online auction. Bidding for this unique card and accessory began on February 15th for $13.3 million.

The lucky buyer is AJ Scaramucci, founder of Solari Capital, according to a Goldin news release. Paul had promised to hand over the cards to the winning bidder, but Scaramucci had already come to the company’s headquarters in person, surprising the auction house. All sales and handovers were completed on the same day.

This sale broke the Guinness World Record for the most expensive Pokemon card sold at auction, and is the second time Paul and this particular card have broken the world record. Paul purchased the card in Dubai in 2021 for $5.275 million, setting a Guinness World Record for the most expensive Pokemon card sold in a private sale, according to a Guinness news release.

Paul then wore the card inside a custom-made diamond necklace during his WWE debut at WrestleMania 38 in 2022. The card will appear ringside again in 2025, when Goldin CEO Ken Goldin wore the accessory during the Jake Paul vs. Anthony Joshua match, generally considered Judgment Day, according to the Pokémon card listing on Goldin’s website. This card also appeared in season 3 of the Netflix series King of Collectors: The Goldin Touch.

Pikachu’s illustrator card is in “almost perfect” condition

The Pokemon Pikachu Illustrator card is rated Gem Mint 10 by the Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA), an award given to “virtually perfect” cards. According to Goldin’s website, of the 53 examples of Pokemon Pikachu illustrator cards documented by PSA, Paul’s is the only one to earn a Gem Mint 10 grade.

The jewelry alone is worth $75,000.

Aside from the rarity of Pokemon cards, the accessories that contain them are also worth a lot of money. The necklace, created by jeweler Sunny, is made from solid Italian gold and set with approximately 35 carats of natural diamonds, according to Goldin’s website. The Pokeball pendant on the necklace on top of the card is made from approximately 6.5 carats of natural diamonds, and the holder itself is a 10 carat pure Italian yellow gold chain set with approximately 27.5 carats of baguette diamonds. Oxford Diamonds valued the necklace at $75,000, according to Goldin’s website.

Several other records were broken at the Pokemon auction.

Paul’s Pikachu Illustrator wasn’t the only collectible Pokemon card for sale. This special card was part of a broader Pokemon and TCG auction held by Goldin in partnership with Paul. According to a Goldin news release, the auction featured 300 items and broke several other records, including:

  • Best-selling Charizard of all time: 1999 Pokemon Base Set 1st Edition Holo #4 Charizard, $954,808
  • Best-selling uncut sheet of all time: 1996 Pokemon Japanese Base Set Holo Uncut Sheets (64 Cards) $613,801
  • Best-selling Pokemon boxes of all time: 1999 Pokemon Base Set 1st Edition Factory Sealed Booster Box (36 Card Sets) $496,000

Supreme Court Justice Alito’s upcoming book sparks talk of retirement

0

play

WASHINGTON – Will President Donald Trump get a chance to nominate a fourth Supreme Court justice?

Speculation has begun to swirl, especially among liberal commentators, over Justice Samuel Alito’s possible retirement plans.

Alito, the second-longest serving justice and one of the most conservative, joined the high court 20 years ago.

“That’s usually a very good milestone toward retirement,” New York University law professor Melissa Murray said on the latest episode of the podcast “Strict Scrutiny,” which she co-hosts.

And if Mr. Alito wants to resign while Republicans control the Senate, he may not want to bet on this year’s midterm elections.

Republicans are expected to have a much easier time holding onto the Senate than the House, but defeat cannot be ruled out. If that happens, it will be difficult for President Trump to identify a successor.

Citric Scrutiny co-host Kate Shaw speculated that Alito could announce his resignation at the end of his term in the coming weeks, as Senate Republicans may not want to hold confirmation hearings in the fall of an election year.

Finally, Alito plans to publish his book in October, just as the court begins its new term.

Steve Vladeck, a law professor at Georgetown University who writes about the court for Substack, said the publication date is “pretty important information because you can’t exactly go on a book tour during the first argument period of the semester.”

Books published in recent years by Justices Ketanji Brown Jackson and Amy Coney Barrett were published in September, giving the justices time to promote them before they begin their new terms.

But David Rutt, a court watcher and lawyer who writes about the law, has recently wondered whether the October publication date is a sign that Mr. Alito hasn’t changed his position.

“Book buyers are more interested in what the book is about. the current “In contrast to retired judges, justice must speak out,” Rutt wrote on Substack, adding, “I can see that Justice Alito does not want to resign until long after publication.”

And in a recent assessment of the likelihood of a Supreme Court vacancy, Washington consultant Bruce Melman noted that the average age of all justices who have resigned in recent years is 79 years old. (Alito will turn 76 in April.)

Melman also wrote that Alito is one of Trump’s most reliable votes on the court, along with Justice Clarence Thomas.

“While the president retains significant influence over Congressional Republicans, his ability to demand loyalty regarding future nominations may be diminishing,” Mellman told Substack.

But Mellman also pointed out that eight of the past 10 presidents have called the Supreme Court at least once during their first two years in office.

During President Trump’s first term, he nominated Neil Gorsuch to fill the seat vacated by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia in President Barack Obama’s final year. President Trump nominated Brett Kavanaugh to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy, who will retire in 2018. She nominated Barrett to replace Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died in 2020.

Since the 1950s, only three presidents have created more Supreme Court vacancies: Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, and Ronald Reagan.

Alito’s resignation would give Trump the opportunity to appoint much younger justices who could help maintain the court’s conservative majority far into the future.

The only sitting justice to have served longer than Alito was Thomas, making him one of the longest serving justices in history. Mr. Thomas could set a record if he remains in office until May 2028, which is why some court watchers don’t expect him to step down now.

Shooting at Rhode Island high school hockey game leaves 2 dead and 3 injured

At least two people were killed and three others were injured in a shooting at an ice rink in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, on February 16, according to local police.

Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Gonsalves said the shooting occurred during a high school hockey game. She said the shootings appeared to be targeted and related to a family dispute. The police officer said the gunman appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“I can’t imagine it,” Pawtucket Mayor Don Grebien said after the attack. “This is high school…it must be traumatic.”

The shooting occurred at the Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, about eight miles from the state capital, Providence.

Gonsalves said further details about the victims and the shooter, including the ages of those involved, would be released at a later date. The injured victim was taken to an area hospital in critical condition, the chief said.

North Providence Public Schools Superintendent Joseph Soho said the students were at the game and the shooting also involved spectators in the arena.

Video from the scene obtained by the Providence Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network, shows at least a dozen gunshots heard and people crouched down, seeking shelter and running toward the exits.

Hockey players are safe, school says

The shooting occurred during a boys hockey game between Coventry Johnston and Blackstone Valley Co-op, which included players from several area schools, including St. Raphael Academy, Providence Country Day, North Providence and North Smithfield, the Providence Journal reported.

“All students who participated in the game are safe,” Soho said in a message to families. He also said the shooting occurred around the start of the first period.

“While all other information at this time is preliminary and has not been officially confirmed, it is important to let everyone know that our students and other area students who participate in the co-op hockey team are safe,” he wrote.

Witness describes shooting: ‘Pure chaos’

Chip DeLorenzo told the Providence Journal that he was at the rink when the gunman opened fire during the game.

DeLorenzo said he was taking photos for the Blackstone Valley Co-op and police arrived at the scene within minutes. He was near the emergency exit but quickly exited the building.

“It was total chaos,” DeLorenzo said. “People running behind me, kids with skates on. They were playing hockey and they came off the ice with their skates and equipment on and ran through the parking lot.”

“I was here in the corner of the rink taking pictures,” DeLorenzo said. “Suddenly, typically, you hear multiple loud firecrackers going off. I didn’t count, but maybe seven or eight, maybe more. People obviously started screaming the same way and panicking. And as soon as I heard it and saw the reaction, I realized it wasn’t a firecracker.”

Rhode Island governor, FBI respond

Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee said he was monitoring the shooting and was in contact with law enforcement and local authorities.

“I’m praying for Pawtucket and everyone involved,” McKee told X.

The FBI office in Boston said it is aware of the shooting and stands ready to assist police. The agency said there was no active threat. Officials advised the public to avoid the area.

USA TODAY has reached out to local and state police for additional information.

Explaining the main differences between tax relief and tax refund

0

Although the terms “tax relief” and “tax rebate” are often used interchangeably, they have two different meanings. One is a broader term that includes a variety of ways Americans can reduce and manage their federal tax burden. The other is a very specific tool that the IRS uses to stimulate the economy.

We’ll explain both in detail, how they work, and why each is important to your financial life. Plus, learn when it’s warranted to enlist the help of a tax-saving expert.

What is tax relief?

Tax relief is a broad umbrella term that refers to programs and policies that help taxpayers reduce and manage their federal tax burden.

“Any method that reduces your tax liability or increases your refund is considered tax relief,” says Brian Menk, Ph.D., a certified public accountant and associate professor of accounting at Duquesne University. This includes everything from tax credits and deductions to offers in compromise and income-driven repayment plans.

What is a tax refund?

Tax refunds are payments made directly to eligible taxpayers and are typically structured as an advance payment of tax credits.

“Rebates are used by governments as a tool to improve the economy. The money given to taxpayers is intended to be used to boost the economy and stimulate purchases,” Menk explains.

A tax rebate typically includes a refundable tax credit, but it differs from a standard tax credit in several ways. First, it’s not a recurring credit that you can claim every year. These are temporary, one-off services that are often introduced during economic crises.

Additionally, taxpayers can claim standard tax credits when filing their taxes, reducing the amount owed dollar for dollar. Tax rebates, on the other hand, tend to be paid directly upfront to Americans, with eligibility based on the previous year’s tax return.

Common misconceptions about tax relief and rebates

Tax refunds are widely misunderstood. The IRS does not clearly define these and does not provide them regularly. As a result, the term is often used interchangeably with tax relief, tax credit, and tax refund. However, all four are different.

Another common misconception is that you need to handle complex tax matters yourself. “Some people believe they can find solutions and negotiate on their own. This is a big mistake,” Menk said. He explains that the Internal Revenue Code (the laws and regulations related to taxation) is extremely complex, currently over 4,100 pages long. Even tax professionals do not know every aspect of this law.

Additionally, you will be at odds with the IRS itself, which has its own interests in mind. If you have a complex tax situation, it is wise to seek the help of a professional who can advocate on your behalf. “It’s important to work with someone who specializes in this field,” says Menk.

How to know which one applies to you

When the federal government introduces a new tax rebate, details of the program will be published so you can see if you’re eligible for it. In recent cases, payments are automatically made to the majority of eligible recipients, so you can even tell when a payment is made to your account. However, we recommend checking the details in case you need to take any steps to qualify.

When it comes to tax relief, it applies to everyone. All taxpayers should take advantage of the credits and deductions available each year come tax season. However, if you’re late filing your taxes, incurring penalties, or have more debt than you can pay, you may need a more advanced tax relief solution.

Cases where tax reduction services may be involved

If you find yourself in a more complex situation, we recommend seeking help from a professional tax relief company. For example, it makes sense to do so if:

  • I received repeated notices from the IRS.
  • paying a large amount of unpaid taxes
  • I don’t know which resolution program I’m eligible for.
  • Facing a wage garnishment or collection lawsuit

Companies such as Optima Tax Relief, Anthem Tax Services, Alleviate Tax, BC Tax, and Priority Tax Relief offer services aimed at helping taxpayers deal with IRS debt. They have years of experience helping Americans deal with complex tax issues, so they can often help streamline the process and protect your interests.

conclusion

Tax relief and tax rebates are not directly comparable, nor is there generally a choice between them. The tax refunds include direct payments made to Americans to boost the economy and refundable tax credits for eligible recipients who missed out on advance payments.

Tax relief is a broad term that includes any method of reducing or managing the federal tax burden and may include tax rebates. Although there are always various forms of tax relief available from the IRS, tax refunds are temporary programs put in place by the government as needed.

Frequently asked questions about tax relief and tax refunds

Learn more about tax relief and tax refunds.

What is the difference between a tax credit and a tax refund?

Tax relief is an umbrella term that includes any legal method of reducing or managing a taxpayer’s tax liability. A tax refund is paid directly to the taxpayer and is often structured as an advance payment of a tax credit.

Is a tax rebate the same as a tax refund?

No, a tax refund generally refers to an advance payment of tax credits. A tax refund is money returned to a taxpayer when the total amount paid and refundable deductions exceed the final tax owed.

Can I receive both tax relief and tax refund?

Yes, tax relief includes any legal action you take to reduce or manage your tax liability. This may include claiming a tax refund when you file your return, as well as claiming credits, claiming deductions, and setting up payment plans.

Is a tax refund taxable income?

Details of tax rebates, including whether they are taxable, are typically outlined at the time the rebate program is announced. In the case of the recent Recovery Rebate Credits in 2020 and 2021, the payments were considered economic relief rather than taxable income.

What is the difference between tax reduction and debt consolidation?

Tax relief refers to IRS programs that help taxpayers reduce or manage their federal tax debt, such as payment plans, penalty reductions, or offers in compromise. Debt consolidation is a strategy in which you negotiate with private creditors to pay less than what you owe, usually after stopping payments and saving a lump sum. Debt resolution can damage your credit and lead to collections, but tax relief requires working within established IRS resolution programs.

Ohio Republican senator withholds donations from Wexner during Epstein investigation

  • Several Columbus politicians have received campaign contributions from billionaire Les Wexner.
  • Wexner has not been charged with a crime, but FBI documents describe him as a possible “co-conspirator.”
  • Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther and City Attorney Zach Klein are not contributing past donations from the Wexners at this time.

A growing list of Ohio politicians are donating campaign funds they received from billionaire retail tycoon Les Wexner ahead of his congressional testimony about his ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Ohio’s two Republican senators and the mayor of Columbus are not among them.

Mr. Epstein was Mr. Wexner’s financial advisor, but Mr. Wexner said he ended his relationship with Mr. Epstein in 2007. Wexner has never been charged in connection with the Epstein case.

Wexner is mentioned thousands of times in documents related to Epstein released by the Justice Department in recent months, including an FBI document that describes him as a possible “co-conspirator.” These revelations have prompted some politicians to push back against Mr. Wexner’s past generosity. This includes Columbus City Council President Shannon Hardin, several Franklin County officials, two state senators, and Representatives Joyce Beatty and Mike Carey.

Mr. Carey, a Columbus Republican, said he plans to donate past campaign contributions from Mr. Wexner to Mr. Epstein because “disturbing details” have come to light about Mr. Wexner’s relationship with Mr. Epstein.

“After I voted to release the entire Epstein file, disturbing details about Les Wexner’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein were revealed,” Carey said. “Epstein was an extremely evil man whose crimes destroyed countless innocent lives. In light of these revelations, I am donating all campaign funds from Mr. and Mrs. Wexner to organizations dedicated to preventing human trafficking and supporting victims.”

A spokesperson for Mr. Wexner declined to comment for this story.

The Columbus Dispatch, part of the USA TODAY Network, asked how other elected officials representing Columbus are leveraging past donations from Les and Abigail Wexner. The Dispatch reviewed available campaign finance records for past donations from the couple, which did not include other relatives.

Abigail Wexner also appears in Epstein’s files, but was never mentioned as a co-conspirator. Several local leaders are contributing separately to Les Wexner’s contribution while keeping Abigail Wexner’s contribution intact.

The Dispatch also does not review the political action committees the Wexners have given over the years because it is impossible to determine whether their PAC contributions went directly to specific politicians.

Columbus Mayor to keep Wexner donation

For decades, Wexner and his wife, Abigail, have wielded great influence in Ohio politics, particularly in Columbus. Wexner, a longtime Republican, declared himself an independent in 2018, but even before that, the suburban Columbus-based businessman had contributed to candidates in both parties. The Wexners have donated to Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, to Ohio Republicans and Democrats running for U.S. Senate, and to local campaigns in Columbus and Franklin counties.

Over the past decade, the Wexners have been Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther’s most generous donors, sending his campaign $156,800, about 3% of his campaign contributions at the time. Of that amount, Les Wexner donated $91,800 and Abigail Wexner donated $65,000. The city’s campaign finance reporting system includes reports dating back to October 2016.

Mr. Ginther has not publicly discussed his plans to donate the Wexners’ donations. Asked at a Feb. 11 press conference, Ginther said he wasn’t thinking about it. He told the Dispatch in a Feb. 16 statement that Wexner has not been criminally charged.

“The crimes of Jeffrey Epstein and his associates are reprehensible and abhorrent,” Ginther said. “We demand that all victims of these heinous crimes be served justice and that their perpetrators be held accountable. We will continue to monitor the progress of these investigations, including Congressional hearings later this week that have not yet resulted in criminal charges.”

U.S. representatives on both sides of the aisle hand out Wexner donations

U.S. Rep. Beatty, D-Columbus, announced on February 13 that he has donated campaign funds from Les Wexner to local organizations that support survivors of sex trafficking and sexual abuse.

Les Wexner has donated $36,200 to Beatty’s campaign over the years, and Abigail Wexner has donated $29,800, according to Federal Election Commission data. A campaign spokesperson said Beatty is contributing money from Les Wexner, but not from Abigail Wexner.

“My thoughts are with the survivors of Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking and abuse,” Beatty said in a statement. “Their courage to come forward demands our commitment to truth, accountability, and justice.”

Carey, a Republican, announced on February 14 that he would donate past campaign contributions from Wexner to charity. The Wexners contributed $13,400 to Carey’s congressional campaign, $10,100 from Les Wexner, and $3,300 from Abigail Wexner. A spokeswoman for Mr. Carey’s office did not immediately respond to a request for clarification on whether Mr. Carey gave money to Abigail Wexner.

Sens. Husted and Moreno and former Sen. Sherrod Brown respond to Wexler’s donation.

Former Ohio Democratic Senate candidate Sherrod Brown attacked his political rival, Republican Sen. Jon Husted, for receiving more than $100,000 from Mr. Wexner over the years. In a Feb. 13 media release, the Brown campaign accused Husted of voting on a procedural vote in September to prevent the release of the Epstein files from proceeding. In November, Husted voted in favor of releasing the files with the consent of a majority of parliament.

“I voted to release the Epstein files,” Husted told the Dispatch on February 13. “I wanted the file to be transparent. I always wanted to protect innocent victims by making sure those who committed crimes were prosecuted.”

“He’s scheduled to testify before Congress next week, but I’m going to wait and see what the outcome is before I make a decision,” Husted said.

Over the years, Mr. Brown has received $10,200 in campaign fees from Abigail Wexner, but nothing from Les Wexner, according to Federal Election Commission data. The Dispatch asked the Brown campaign if it intended to part with past donations from Abigail Wexner, but the campaign did not respond to questions.

“Jon Husted received more than $116,000 directly from Jeffrey Epstein’s co-conspirators, 10 times more than any other sitting senator,” Brown spokeswoman Lauren Chow said in an email response to questions about Abigail Wexner’s donations. “He accepted the maximum contribution to his campaign last July, and just weeks later voted against a bipartisan effort to release the full Epstein file.”

Les Wexner donated $3,500 to Republican Sen. Bernie Moreno’s campaign in 2025, according to federal records. A spokesperson for Mr. Moreno said he would not donate the money.

Some politicians in Columbus and Franklin counties donate Wexner donations.

The Wexners have contributed $42,500 to the city council campaign of Mr. Hardin, the leader of the Columbus City Council, since the end of 2016, according to available city records. Most recently, Hardin told the media that he received what he called an “unsolicited check” from Wexner for $10,000 in 2025, which he donated to Columbus Promise, a scholarship program for Columbus City Schools graduates, in early January. Hardin announced he would donate an additional $10,000 that he received over the years from Les Wexner.

Hardin has not donated the $22,500 in donations he received over the years from Abigail Wexner.

Hardin released a statement on social media saying, “All I know about Mr. Epstein’s crimes and ties to Central Ohio are the disturbing revelations that are reported on the news every day.” “But for me, it’s simple. The public today doesn’t trust those in power, and we have to take that back. Anything that prevents the community from believing that I’m working for someone other than them is a distraction. I support the Congressional investigation in whatever direction it goes.”

Other current Columbus officials who have received donations from the Wexners over the years include City Attorney Zach Klein, who received $35,000, and City Councilman Emanuel Remy, who received $10,000, according to available city records.

Klein’s campaign has received $20,000 from Les Wexner and $15,000 from Abigail Wexner over the years, which he has not given up.

“We all want justice for the innocent victims and accountability for the perpetrators of these heinous crimes,” Klein told The Dispatch via text. “Mr. Wexner will have an opportunity on Wednesday, under oath to Congress, to address the concerns that many, including myself, have about his involvement in this investigation. I will look to what he has to say as I make my decision.”

Remy, who received $5,000 from Les Wexner and $5,000 from Abigail Wexner, said he would donate the $5,000 from Les Wexner to charity.

“I will donate the two unsolicited donations my campaign received from Mr. Les Wexner to charity, so there is no question that I will serve the people of Columbus first,” Remy told the Dispatch in a text message. “My values are, and continue to be, rooted in serving the people of Columbus, not my donors. At this time, it is unclear whether Abigail Wexner had anything to do with this matter. I believe people should be judged by their actions.”

State lawmakers also share Wexner donation plans

State Sen. Beth Liston of Dublin announced on Facebook over the weekend that she donated $1,000 in campaign contributions she received from Les Wexner in 2024 to local organizations that support young people affected by human trafficking. She said she was not surprised to receive a donation from Mr. Wexner, whom she had never met, because she was running to represent the Columbus suburb of New Albany.

State Sen. Michelle Reynolds (R-Winchester) announced in X over the weekend that she donated $8,000 she received from the Wexners for her campaign (including $7,000 from Les Wexner) to charities in her district that empower youth leaders and support families facing food insecurity.

“It is my sincere hope that federal law enforcement will continue to pursue justice and that those involved in Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Reynolds said in the post.

Tax credits and tax relief – key differences explained

0

Understanding the difference between tax credits and tax relief is important, especially if you’re trying to reduce your taxes or manage your IRS debt. Although the two terms are similar, they are applied at different stages of the tax process.

Tax credits reduce the amount of tax you owe when you file your return. Tax relief, on the other hand, refers to programs and options that help taxpayers manage existing tax debts, penalties, or payment issues. Simply put, tax credits are applied before taxes become a liability, and tax credits are applied after a tax balance is incurred.

Understanding how these terms differ can help you set realistic expectations and choose the right next steps and the right professional assistance when dealing with taxes.

What is a tax credit?

Tax credits directly reduce the amount of federal income tax owed. If you qualify, the credit reduces the amount of federal income tax you owe dollar for dollar.

There are two main types of credits.

  • Refundable tax creditThis will reduce your tax liability to less than zero and may result in a refund if your tax liability is less than the credit amount.
  • Non-refundable credit. You can reduce your bill to zero, but never more.

Common tax credits include:

  • Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC): This is a refundable tax credit designed to benefit low- to moderate-income workers and their families. If you meet the conditions, the tax you owe will be reduced and you may receive a refund even if you haven’t paid the tax. For tax year 2025, the credit ranges from $649 to $8,046, with amounts based on income, filing status, and number of qualifying children.

  • Child Tax Credit (CTC): This is a non-refundable tax credit that helps reduce your taxes if you have qualifying children under the age of 17. The maximum amount is $2,200 per eligible child. A portion of the CTC may be refunded through the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) if it exceeds the amount of tax owed. Up to $1,700 per eligible child, depending on income. To qualify for ACTC, you must earn at least $2,500. At the same time, your annual income cannot exceed $200,000 ($400,000 for married couples filing jointly) to qualify for the full CTC.
  • American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC): This is a credit that refunds a portion of qualified educational expenses paid to eligible students during the first four years of post-secondary education. The annual credit limit is $2,500 per eligible student. Even if you don’t owe taxes, you may receive a refund of 40% of the balance of your credit (up to $1,000). To qualify for the maximum credit, your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) must not exceed $80,000 ($160,000 for married couples filing jointly).

Tax credits are applied during the filing process, potentially avoiding the need for tax credits later.

What is tax relief?

Tax abatement is a collective term for programs and rules that help manage or reduce tax debts and penalties. Unlike credits, relief is typically applied after a tax balance exists.

Examples of IRS tax relief programs include:

  • IRS payment plans that allow you to pay over time: Installment agreements allow you to spread your tax payments over monthly payments instead of paying them all at once. A payment plan does not reduce the amount you owe. Interest and penalties typically continue to accrue while the balance is paid.
  • Reduction of penalties such as reduction of administrative penalties and reduction for justifiable reasons: If you have a track record of filing and paying on time, or if you were unable to meet the deadline due to circumstances such as illness or natural disasters, reduced penalties may apply. Both types of relief may reduce the penalty but do not eliminate the interest owed.
  • Compromised offer: This option may allow you to settle your tax debt for less than the full amount of your tax liability, based on what the IRS believes it can reasonably collect based on your income, assets, and living expenses. Approval is not automatic and your application may be denied if the IRS determines that you will be able to repay your debt in full over time.

Deductions and credits are sometimes loosely described as relief, but in IRS terminology, relief typically refers to post-filing options.

“IRS tax relief programs are typically considered after your tax liability has been established and you are no longer able to pay,” said Mac Gardner, certified financial planner and founder and chief education officer of FinLit Tec. “Tax credits and deductions are tools that can be used to file this year’s tax return. They help taxpayers (effectively) reduce their current tax liability for the year in which they file their return.”

Tax credits and tax relief: key differences

Here’s a quick way to think about tax credits and tax relief.

When tax credits and tax reductions overlap

In some situations, credit and relief can work together. for example:

  • Claiming a tax credit may reduce your taxes so much that you won’t need relief later.
  • Deductions reduce your taxable income and reduce your chances of paying taxes.
  • Tax credits may help you avoid penalties associated with underpayments.

This overlap may be why people sometimes confuse the two, even though each tool works differently.

How the IRS Determines Eligibility for Tax Relief

When you apply for tax relief, the IRS looks at your complete financial situation. This typically includes:

  • income from any source
  • Living and business expenses
  • Assets such as bank accounts and real estate
  • Do you have a track record of filing and paying on time?
  • Ability to pay now or over time

This review helps the IRS determine which tax relief options are available.

How to find out what tax credits or reductions you are eligible for

Start by reviewing your tax return and any IRS notices you received. The IRS Interactive Tax Assistant (ITA) can help you identify potential credit or filing problems.

You can also request records of your IRS account to see what the agency has on file, including unpaid balances, penalties assessed, and if you missed any returns. If your situation involves unpaid taxes or penalties, you may choose to consult with a CPA or enrolled agent who can help you understand what options apply to you before taking action.

When assistance from a tax professional makes sense

Some people handle IRS issues on their own, but if you’re dealing with tax debt, IRS collections, multiple years of unfiled returns, or a complex financial situation, professional help may make sense.

In such cases, some people may turn to a tax professional or tax relief company to help evaluate options and communicate with the IRS. Companies that can help with tax resolution include Optima, Anthem Tax Services, Alleviate Tax, BC Tax, and Priority Tax Relief. Working with any company does not guarantee a specific outcome and IRS approval is always required.

conclusion

While tax credits reduce the amount owed when filing a return, tax relief programs can help taxpayers manage existing IRS debt. Understanding this difference can help you focus on the right solution for your situation, whether that means claiming available credits or considering IRS resolution options.

Frequently asked questions about tax credits and tax relief

Are tax credits considered tax relief?

Tax credits are generally not considered tax credits in the IRS’s technical sense. Although tax credits reduce the amount of taxes owed when filing a return, tax credits typically refer to programs that help taxpayers manage or resolve existing IRS debt. This difference in timing explains why tax credits reduce the tax liability before penalties and collections begin, whereas tax credits are applied after a tax balance has accrued.

Do tax credits reduce tax liability?

Tax credits can help prevent tax debt by reducing the amount you owe, but they usually don’t apply if you already have a balance in your account. If you already received a bill from the IRS in a given tax year, claiming the credit in another tax year may not erase that existing debt.

Do I need to apply for the credit before applying for tax relief?

Yes, in most cases you will need to claim a credit. Claiming the credit first may reduce or eliminate the need for later relief and may change the IRS options you are eligible for if you have a balance remaining.

Massey says he doesn’t trust Bondi as attorney general.

  • Republican Rep. Thomas Massie said he doesn’t trust Attorney General Pam Bondi.
  • Massey criticized Bondi’s combative testimony before the House Judiciary Committee on the Jeffrey Epstein file.
  • The congressman singled out Bondi and accused the Justice Department of failing to hold the Justice Department accountable.
  • Massey also said it was “cold” that Bondi refused to look at Epstein’s survivors during the hearing.

Kentucky Republican Rep. Thomas Massie said he doesn’t trust Attorney General Pam Bondi, especially after her belligerent behavior on the House Judiciary Committee.

Massey told ABC News’ “This Week” on Feb. 15 that he did not approve of Bondi’s actions and response when asked about the Justice Department’s release of files on convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein during a Feb. 11 hearing. During the hearing, Mr. Bondi and Mr. Massey had an unusually acrimonious exchange for two Republicans.

“I don’t think she did very well,” Massey told “This Week” co-anchor Martha Raddatz. “She brought a book full of insults to each member of Congress. She obviously had one for me.”

Mr. Raddatz asked Mr. Massey, who represents Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District and co-authored legislation requiring the release of the Epstein files, whether he trusted Mr. Bondi.

“I don’t think Pam Bondi has confidence in Pam Bondi,” Massey replied. “She didn’t have enough confidence to do anything other than name names at the hearing. So, no, I don’t trust her. She doesn’t have any accountability at the Department of Justice.”

Massie responds to heated exchange with Bondi

Massey’s ABC television interview came just days after Bondi said during a hearing that Massey suffered from “Trump Derangement Syndrome” and referred to President Donald Trump as a “failed politician.”

Massey, who opposes the president’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” bill and is a known enemy of Trump, faces key challenges from Ed Gallein, a Trump supporter, and fellow Kentucky Republican Rep. Andy Barr.

Bondi’s explosive hearing on February 11 came after the Justice Department released more than 3 million pages from Epstein’s files. The latest release sparked criticism and resignations around the world.

Among the powerful American figures identified in the latest documents is Hollywood mogul Casey Wasserman, chairman of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee, who announced he would sell his eponymous talent agency. In a staff memo provided to USA TODAY, Wasserman wrote that he “became a distraction.”

During an appearance on “This Week,” Massey told Raddatz that her fellow committee members did not get the answers they wanted from Bondi about the Epstein file during testimony.

“No, but she went off script and had a conversation with me about the production of this document, and 40 minutes after I pointed out to the Department of Justice that some documents were over-redacted, she admitted that they had produced a document that was not redacted,” Massey said. “So it’s clear they made a mistake in the documentation.”

Massey said the files included documents naming billionaire businessman Les Wexner as a possible co-conspirator of Epstein. However, Bondi did not reveal the name of the person who redacted Wexner’s name.

“At least she’s tacitly acknowledging that,” Massey said. “And it’s clear their work isn’t done here yet.”

Ms. Raddatz then asked about the fact that Ms. Bondi did not look at the Epstein survivors behind her during her testimony.

“I think it was a little cold on her part,” Massey said. “I think she was scared.”

Massey said the survivors want to meet with the Justice Department.

“This is not about Bill Clinton, this is not about Donald Trump. This Epstein File Transparency Act is about giving justice to these survivors,” Massey said. “We have some transparency, but it’s called the Department of Justice, not the Office of Transparency.”

Attle Lee McGrath reveals heartbreak after DNF in Olympic men’s slalom

On Monday, February 16, at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, the depth of defeat was on display in a heart-wrenching way.

Atre Lee McGrath, a Vermont-born ski racer competing on behalf of Norway, held a 0.59-second lead in the men’s slalom before starting the second-to-last run of the alpine ski competition.

Shortly after, he missed a gate on the course, leading to a surprising disqualification.

McGrath, 25, threw his ski pole. He put on his ski boots, stepped to the side of the runway, and collapsed onto the snow. He then got up and began marching across the snow to an unknown destination, the Stelvio Ski Center in Bormio.

It turned out that McGrath had already suffered heavy losses.

His grandfather suffered from dementia and passed away on the night of the opening ceremony.

After finishing fifth in the giant slalom on Feb. 14, he said, “With all the stress leading up to this championship and losing my grandpa and everything else, I never thought I’d be in the starting spot.” “This was some of the best skiing I’ve ever done, especially the second one today, considering how I felt so far.” …This was one of the toughest weeks of my life. And it’s really hard to suddenly be like, “When I go skiing between the plastic gates going down the mountain and I lose someone I love so much, I’m trying to make it seem like it matters.” It was very difficult to find that balance, but I’m very proud that I was able to do it today. ”

McGrath’s father, Felix, skied for the United States in the 1980s, but McGrath chose to represent Norway (her mother is Norwegian). “For me, I love being Norwegian, even if I’m half American. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else,” he said on February 14.

Two days later, he was in a position to win an Olympic medal, perhaps a gold medal, while perhaps remembering his grandfather’s death.

Then he was suddenly disqualified and had to walk a very long distance away from the medal podium.

What really happens on nude cruises, according to officials

0

You can wear whatever you want on a nude cruise, but that doesn’t mean everything is OK. Here we will explain how the ship works, where it sails and the rules that passengers must follow.

Imagine returning home from your next cruise with no sun spots.

Swimsuits are standard attire on many cruise ships, but swimsuits are not required on some sailings. Nude cruises allow travelers to pack light and sail the high seas untamed. The American Nude Recreation Association calls the cruise “a unique way to experience nude recreation, offering our members options beyond traditional resort and club settings,” president Linda Weber told USA TODAY.

The dress code may not be restrictive, but that doesn’t mean sailing on board is free. There are some etiquettes that passengers should know before boarding. Here’s what you need to know about nude cruises.

What is a nude cruise?

“Nude cruises are charter sailings with major cruise lines that offer naturists and naturists the opportunity to enjoy a clothing-optional environment while traveling with like-minded people,” Weber said.

AANR has partnered with Bare Necessities Tour & Travel, which offers Big Nude Boat Cruises. The 2026 version of Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Pearl departed from Miami on February 9th. According to the company’s website, scheduled ports of call include the Bahamas, Curacao, Bonaire and Aruba, and will include “Nude Days at Sea.”

The 2027 cruise will visit the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, St. Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and other ports aboard Norwegian Jewel. Rates start from $2,000 per person for 2 people.

Weber noted that AANR does not endorse or encourage sexual activity, and that some sailings marketed as nude cruises actually fall into the “lifestyle” or swinger category. “Those considering a cruise are encouraged to carefully consider their cruise offerings to ensure they are booking a cruise that aligns with AANR standards,” she said.

Weber said her husband discovered Bare Necessities cruises 10 years ago and was drawn to the combination of a change of scenery from land and international travel. “I met so many people from all over the world and was immersed in what I called ‘the land of my people,'” she said.

She said she heard similar feedback from other passengers. The voyages offer guests “the opportunity to meet other naturists in the same area and really get to know them, as they are on board for anywhere from a week to almost two weeks in some cases.”

Are guests naked the entire time?

In most cases they are possible. “Passengers are typically naked on board the ship, except for time spent in port or in the dining room at night, when clothing is required,” Weber said.

Bare Necessities states in the FAQ section of its website that even guests staying on board the ship while it is in port must remain clothed when the ship is on its side, including on the balcony, until the ship departs and the crew announces that guests are free to undress. “Passengers may be naked when the ship is at sea or in port, unless an announcement to the contrary is made,” the company said.

Casual attire is accepted in the Big Nude Boat’s dining room, but bathrobes are not permitted. On the other hand, the self-service buffet is a “undressing area”.

What other rules are there for nude cruises?

Bare Necessities requires travelers to sit naked (or in a thong or G-string) on a towel. Its website says, “For that purpose, fresh beach towels will be provided in your stateroom each day.” “A small bundle of towels will be placed outside the common areas on board in case you arrive without one.”

Lingerie or “fetish wear” is not permitted, and you may not take photos or videos of others on board without their consent. Guests must also abide by the “no photography” rule.

A complete list of policies is available online.

Weber said the cruise is many guests’ first experience of social nude recreation. “When I keep in touch with fellow travelers, I often hear how life-changing the experience was,” she says. “Many choose to book for next year while still on board.”

Homan says security forces will remain in Minnesota while ICE withdraws

0

play

White House Border Secretary Tom Homan announced on February 15 that a small “security force” would remain in Minnesota temporarily as the Trump administration scales back immigration enforcement in the state.

Homan said in an interview on CBS News’ “Face the Nation” that a limited number of federal agents will remain in Minnesota to respond in the event that “we are surrounded by instigators and things get out of control.”

He did not say how many personnel would make up the rapid response force, but said he was “hoping” they would be removed “quite quickly.”

Homan’s comments came days after he announced the end of Operation Metro Surge, a migrant mission in Midwestern states that sparked a national and bipartisan backlash against the Trump administration after the deaths of two Americans at the hands of federal agents.

In announcing the withdrawal, Homan touted the operation as a success, arresting 4,000 illegal immigrants who had been charged with violent crimes. Homan credited the withdrawal to “unprecedented” cooperation between national and Minnesota state and local officials.

“As a result of our efforts here, Minnesota is no longer a haven for criminals,” Homan said at a Feb. 12 press conference.

The move was welcomed by state and local officials in Minnesota, some of whom disputed Homan’s claims and said there was no agreement in place to expand cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

“We don’t enforce federal immigration law. Of course we do. We don’t cooperate with (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) or any agency to enforce federal immigration law,” Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said at a news conference after Homan’s announcement. “The idea that there was an agreement is false.”

Homan said in a separate interview on Fox News’ “Fox & Friends” on Feb. 15 that Minnesota officials “should say thank you.”

Homan was sent to Minnesota in the aftermath of the killings of ICU nurse Alex Preti and Renee Nicole Good, a poet and mother of three, which sparked nationwide protests and increased scrutiny of the tactics of officials carrying out the administration’s deportation plan.

The outrage led to the shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security, as Democrats vowed not to support a funding bill for the department without immigration enforcement reform. Republicans said the request was unrealistic.

Among the key points of contention are masks worn by federal employees. Democrats are calling for their removal, but Republicans say it is necessary to protect employees from having their personal information collected and other forms of harassment.

Homan told CBS News that while he is not involved in the ongoing Homeland Security negotiations, “I don’t like masks either.” Still, the border czar insisted the cover was necessary amid an increase in threats and assaults against immigration officers.

“These men and women have to protect themselves,” he said.

Homan acknowledged that the Minnesota operation needs reform. In a recent statement, Homan highlighted a series of internal changes he made when he arrived in Minnesota, from refocusing on enforcement against undocumented immigrants with criminal records to sending more Internal Affairs officers “to make sure our officers on the ground are doing the right thing.”

But despite the controversy surrounding the Minnesota operation, Homan doesn’t rule out a future surge.

“I think it depends on the situation,” he told CBS News. “I’ve been saying from day one that we need to do that. We need to bring additional agents into the sanctuary city zone. The number of agents depends on the situation on the ground, how many known criminal targets there are. Because we know there are problems in sanctuary cities, and we know that sanctuary cities are emitting public safety threats to the public.”

He added, “I hope other sanctuary cities look at what happened in Minnesota and how we got to where we are. I think it’s a good place to be.”
