Law enforcement is asking anyone with information to contact 1-800-CALL-FBI or the Pima County Sheriff’s Office tips.fbi.gov. (520-351-4900) or 88-CRIME.

The search for Savannah Guthrie’s missing mother is in its fourth week as Arizona authorities say the case remains unsolved.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI continue to search for Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of the “Today” anchor. Guthrie was reported missing from her home in Arizona on Sunday, February 1st, and has been missing since Saturday, January 31st. As the investigation dragged on for another week without any major developments or arrests, the Sheriff’s Office announced on February 21 that it still had “hundreds of law enforcement personnel” dedicated to the investigation. Find Guthrie.

Earlier this month, the FBI released an image showing a masked man appearing to be fiddling with a camera on Guthrie’s doorstep the morning she disappeared, but the identity of the person in the image has not been determined. Law enforcement has ruled out the entire Guthrie family as suspects.

The FBI is offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to Guthrie’s recovery or the arrest and conviction of those responsible for her disappearance.

The status of the incident as of Sunday, February 22nd is as follows:

Savannah Guthrie mom case latest update: Investigation remains ‘in progress,’ authorities say

The latest information comes from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, which issued a statement on February 21 claiming the investigation remains “ongoing.” This update comes at the end of a week where there appeared to be little major progress in search.

On February 21, the Pima County Sheriff’s Office said, “Resources in this investigation remain unchanged and may fluctuate daily based on leads in the investigation. Hundreds of law enforcement personnel remain dedicated to this case. An active investigation will continue until Nancy Guthrie is located or all leads are exhausted.”

The sheriff’s office also confirmed that detectives and investigators were back in the Guthrie area on Feb. 21 “on patrol as part of an investigation,” but did not provide further details.

In an interview with NBC News on Feb. 20, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos addressed the pace of the investigation, telling the network, “Sometimes things take a while.” But he added that the investigation is “still growing” rather than shrinking “in terms of leads, efforts and the opening of investigations.”

“We’re not quitting,” Nanos told NBC. “We’ll find her.”

Are there any suspects in the Nancy Guthrie case?

Authorities are still working to identify the masked man seen at Guthrie’s door the morning she disappeared in doorbell camera footage released earlier this month, but the sheriff’s office said on February 20 that authorities “have not ruled out the possibility that more than one person is involved.”

However, Nanos told NBC News on February 20 that “we are getting closer and closer to identifying other items” of clothing, including shoes, pants and a jacket, that the man was wearing in the video.

The FBI previously said the man seen in the surveillance video was “approximately 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall and of average build.” He was wearing an Ozark Trail Hiker Pack, a backpack sold exclusively at Walmart. The Sheriff’s Office announced last week that investigators were working with Walmart to identify the person who purchased the backpack.

The clothing seen in the video “may have been purchased from Walmart, but is not exclusively available at Walmart,” the sheriff’s office said in a Feb. 16 statement.

Authorities are continuing to analyze DNA found at Guthrie’s residence. Investigators previously confirmed on February 13 that DNA not belonging to Guthrie or anyone who had “close contact with her” had been collected from her property and submitted for analysis. In a Feb. 21 update, the Sheriff’s Office said that “laboratory experts are working on its analysis” but that “as with any biological evidence, there may be challenges in isolating the DNA.”

Investigators are also examining surveillance video submitted by Nancy Guthrie’s neighbor. The sheriff’s office is asking neighbors to submit any video footage that appears to be “unusual or significant” between January 1 and February 2 to investigators.

Savannah Guthrie has not spoken out about the incident since February 15, when she released a video saying, “We still have hope, we still believe.” She added: “I just wanted to say to anyone who has her or knows where she is that it’s not too late.”

Man shot dead after allegedly breaking into Mar-a-Lago

0

An armed man suspected of breaching Mar-a-Lago’s secure perimeter was shot and killed by law enforcement officers early Sunday morning, February 22, according to the U.S. Secret Service.

The man was seen around 1:30 a.m. local time at the north gate of President Donald Trump’s compound in Palm Beach, Florida, and was “in possession of what appeared to be a shotgun and fuel can,” the Secret Service said in a news release. The president was in Washington during the incident and not at the resort.

Two Secret Service agents and a Palm Beach County officer confronted the man before law enforcement shot him, authorities said. No agents were injured in the incident. Anthony Guglielmi, director of public affairs for the Secret Service, said in a statement that no one was under Secret Service protection at the time of the shooting.

Palm Beach County Sheriff Rick Bradshaw said at a news conference that Mar-a-Lago security detected a man entering the interior perimeter near the entrance to the property, prompting a deputy and two Secret Service agents to respond to the scene to investigate.

“They were confronted by a white man with a gas can and a shotgun,” Bradshaw said. “He was ordered to drop the two pieces of equipment he was carrying, at which time he placed a gas canister and raised the general into firing position. At that point, the aide and two Secret Service personnel fired their weapons, neutralizing the threat.”

Authorities have not released the identity of the man, but say he is in his early 20s. The FBI, Secret Service, and Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office are all investigating the incident.

Officials said at a Feb. 22 press conference that the FBI is currently processing the scene. Authorities asked people living in the area to check security footage around their homes and report anything suspicious to the FBI or local authorities.

Asked if the man was known to law enforcement, Bradshaw said, “I don’t know at this time.” He said he could not yet confirm how many shots were fired because the incident is still under investigation.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

Snow forecast by state and region as nor’easter approaches

0

“Small wobbles in a storm’s path can make a big difference,” said AccuWeather Director of Forecasting Operations Karl Erickson.

play

The snow from late January’s devastating winter storm may finally be melting for many, but an ongoing nor’easter is expected to dump several inches of fresh snow on parts of the East Coast.

The storm’s path and strength are in flux as meteorologists closely monitor its approach, but the forecast for February 21 has become clearer. The Northeast is expected to bring heavy snow and strong winds from Feb. 22 to Feb. 23 from the mid-Atlantic to the Northeast, the National Weather Service said.

The Bureau of Meteorology said blizzard warnings were in effect for some areas in the storm’s path, making travel dangerous and potentially causing power outages. The heaviest snow and effects of the heaviest storms will be felt along the coast, with up to 20 inches possible in some states, the National Weather Service said. Wind gusts of 40 to 70 mph are expected from coastal New Jersey to southern New England.

“This is going to be a dangerous and incredibly destructive winter storm,” said AccuWeather Director of Forecasting Operations Karl Erickson.

Here’s how much snow you can expect to see in your state.

new england

Areas from New Jersey to southeastern New England are especially likely to experience blizzard conditions, the National Weather Service said. The Boston Weather Service said snow totals could reach 10 to 20 inches in eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Snowfall rates of 2 inches per hour are expected.

According to the Boston Weather Service, there is great uncertainty in snowfall totals from western Massachusetts to Connecticut, but inland areas could see 4 to 8 inches of snow and 8 to 12 inches closer to the coast.

AccuWeather predicted Boston could see between 8 and 12 inches.

mid atlantic

Major cities on the Mid-Atlantic coast, including New York City and Philadelphia, are expected to receive 6 to 10 inches of snow, according to AccuWeather. The National Weather Service in Philadelphia and Mount Holly, New Jersey, is estimating between 8 and 18 inches of rain for New Jersey and southeastern Pennsylvania, including the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

The National Weather Service office in Mount Holly, New Jersey, said parts of Delaware were also at risk of a blizzard, with the possibility of seeing 12 to 18 inches of snow.

The Washington, D.C., area could see 1 to 3 inches, and Baltimore could see 3 to 6 inches, according to AccuWeather.

Map shows snow, winter weather forecast for your state

Total snowfall depends on the path of the storm

Forecasters said even small changes in the expected path of the storm could affect snowfall totals.

Erickson said the storm’s path will especially impact areas inland from the coast. As the center of the storm approaches the coast, heavy snow and winds are likely to spread further inland. If it stays offshore, there may be less snow inland, but coastal areas will still be affected.

“Small wobbles in a storm’s path can make a big difference,” Erickson said.

Controversy over Epstein files ensnares British Prime Minister Keir Starmer

  • British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing pressure following his cabinet resignation over the Jeffrey Epstein scandal.
  • Mr Starmer’s political battle revolves around the appointment of Mr Epstein’s friend Peter Mandelson as US ambassador.
  • Recent opinion polls show Starmer’s approval ratings have fallen to historic lows for a Labor leader.
  • Despite the controversy and calls for his resignation, some experts believe Starmer is likely to remain in the role for some time to come.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has come under fire after a wave of cabinet resignations over the release of other documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, experts say, even though he never met the convicted sex offender.

University of Pennsylvania Political Science Dean Brendan O’Leary told USA TODAY about Starmer, who won in a landslide in 2024, ending 14 years of Conservative rule. “The Prime Minister is definitely looking over his shoulder.”

Starmer’s name does not appear in any of Epstein’s files, but his political struggles are linked to Peter Mandelson, a friend of Epstein’s as ambassador to the United States. Mandelson was removed as ambassador in September 2025 after further details of his relationship with Epstein emerged.

Further details of Mr. Mandelson’s ties to the disgraced late financier were revealed in the latest documents from the Department of Justice, which revealed that Mr. Mandelson corresponded with Mr. Epstein after the investor registered as a sex offender in 2009.

Mandelson also resigned from the House of Lords, the upper house of the British parliament, this month and could be investigated for misconduct in public office, O’Leary added.

Mr Starmer apologized to Mr Epstein’s victims for believing Mr Mandelson’s “lies”.

Mr O’Leary said: “Mr Mandelson’s move to provide Mr Epstein with information about the UK’s intended support for the euro at a critical time in the currency crisis was unusual.” “And, of course, we’ll never know what the scope of that was, but it would have been considered classified information that could have been misused by Epstein.”

Just a week after the destruction of the Epstein documents on January 30, two of Starmer’s top aides also resigned. Communications director Tim Allan and Starmer’s close aide Morgan McSweeney said they had taken responsibility for advising on Mandelson’s appointment to Britain’s top foreign affairs post.

“The decision to appoint Peter Mandelson was the wrong one. He has undermined faith in our party, our country and politics itself,” McSweeney said in a statement on February 8. “While I do not oversee the due diligence and vetting process, I believe that process needs to be fundamentally overhauled.”

Mr O’Leary said the Prime Minister’s position had understandably come under intense scrutiny, particularly the resignation of Mr McSweeney, who Mr Starmer “trusted as a tireless enforcer of internal party discipline”.

Mr O’Leary said: “I don’t think Mr Starmer is dishonest, but I think he made a serious error in judgment by believing Mr McSweeney’s advice about Mr Mandelson.” “It is entirely possible that further information will emerge, and if it does, it could be bad news for Starmer.”

Starmer is also struggling in the polls.

The public was also cruel to Starmer.

An Ipsos poll conducted at the end of January found that just 20% of people had a favorable view of Starmer, who has vowed to stabilize the country’s economy and improve public services. His net favorability score of -50 matched the lowest Ipsos has found for a Labor leader since it began tracking the statistic in 2007.

What’s more, Starmer’s “lead in satisfaction, not favorability, is the worst of any prime minister ever recorded by Ipsos,” Kieran Pedley, Ipsos’ UK political director, told USA TODAY from London. “And we’ve been measuring a similar lead in satisfaction with presidential approval ratings since the late 1970s, the days of Margaret Thatcher.”

Mr Pedley said Mr Starmer had been elected with a mandate to make change because people were deeply dissatisfied with public services, the cost of living and immigration. Pedley said some polls believe the pace of change is too slow.

“Keir Starmer’s position as prime minister is fragile,” Mr Pedley added. “I think there is definitely a sense of political crisis.”

A YouGov poll in January also showed Starmer’s decline in popularity was widespread, with only 18% of Brits viewing him favorably.

Mr Starmer vowed on February 10 that he would never walk away from his job, despite pressure from some Labor leaders, including Anas Sarwar, who heads Scotland’s Starmer Labor Party and called on Mr Starmer to resign.

Laura Beers, a political science professor at American University who specializes in British politics, said Starmer was likely to remain in office.

And with Labor holding a majority in parliament, Starmer is unlikely to be forced to resign. She believes Starmer will weather any storm for now, despite heavy criticism.

“If[Starmer]had intended to go, he would have been gone by now,” said Mr Beals, who is currently in the UK. “Given that Starmer’s resignation has not yet occurred, it is unlikely that this will ever reach that point.”

The upcoming election could decide Mr Starmer’s fate.

Mr Starmer’s future may be determined by a series of local elections scheduled for May, in which his Labor Party is expected to lose heavily.

Around 5,000 voters will decide seats in 136 local councils after the British government recently postponed elections following an appeal from the rival Reform Party.

Reform Party leader Nigel Farage said the government’s decision was a victory for Reform Britain.

“We took this Labor government to court and won,” Farage said in a February 16 post on X.

Beals pointed out that Andy Burnham, a popular British politician and current mayor of Greater Manchester, was recently blocked from running in a special election where he could return to parliament and become a potential challenger to Starmer.

Mr Pedley, director of UK politics at Ipsos, said in a direct poll that “people are split down the middle” between Mr Starmer and Mr Farage on who they want to be prime minister, as opposed to Labour’s other options.

“A successor is not certain, and one reason is that it is not yet clear who will definitely replace him,” Pedley said.

“There’s nothing in the polls to indicate there’s anyone waiting to replace him,” Pedley said. “Therefore, while there are still difficult times ahead for Mr Starmer, there is no guarantee that he will be sacked or replaced.”

Beal agrees.

“If Starmer resigns or is expelled, there will be no viable successor and Labor knows that,” Mr Beals said. “There’s literally 0% chance of an election being called on this. In fact, it would be shocking if Starmer didn’t weather this storm.”

But Mr O’Leary is less optimistic about Mr Starmer’s future.

“He has barely survived, but his encounter with fate will come in the upcoming election,” O’Leary said. “And with Labor (the party) doing exceptionally poorly and that being the case now, it’s very difficult to see how he will survive.”

Gold medal game time and viewing method

MILAN — The U.S. men’s hockey team is looking to end its gold medal drought on a key day as the last U.S. team wins an Olympic title.

On Sunday, February 22, the 46th anniversary of the “Miracle on Ice,” the United States and Canada will face off in the gold medal game for the 2026 Winter Olympics. On that day in 1980, the United States defeated the Soviet Union with a goal from Mike Eruzione, then defeated Finland in the next game to win the gold medal. Eruzione shared stories with both the Milan men’s team and the victorious women’s team.

This game will be different, as both the American and Canadian teams are loaded with NHL stars. But Canada is America’s biggest hockey rival and has performed well in recent championship games.

Canada boasts three of the league’s top four scorers in Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon and Macklin Celebrini. The American team also has similar talent with Auston Matthews, Jack Eichel, the Tkachuk brothers and Quinn Hughes.

Captain Sidney Crosby, who was injured in the quarterfinals, will not participate. He is not listed on the lineup sheet on the International Ice Hockey Federation’s website or on the lines posted by Hockey Canada on social media.

USA TODAY is broadcasting live coverage of the U.S. vs. Canada gold medal game from Milan. Here’s what you need to know about the game, including how to watch it.

Streaming options for the U.S.-Canada gold medal showdown include NBC’s subscription streaming service Peacock, both NBCOlympics.com with TV Login and the NBC Olympics app.

Canada will be without captain Sidney Crosby for the game against the gold medal-winning United States.

He was not listed on the lineup sheet posted by Hockey Canada about an hour before the game between the hockey rivals took place at the Milan Santa Giulia Ice Hockey Arena.

Crosby was injured four days ago. He skated on Feb. 21, and coach John Cooper said the team would decide what was best for Canada and Crosby.

Canada has an advantage over the United States when facing each other in the championship game of best-on-best tournaments involving NHL players, such as last year’s 4 Nations Faceoff.

Both teams are 5-0 in this tournament.

The United States defeated Latvia, Denmark, and Germany in the qualifying rounds, Sweden in the quarterfinals, and Slovakia in the semifinals. The U.S. needed a come-from-behind victory over Denmark, forcing Sweden into overtime.

Canada defeated the Czech Republic, Switzerland, and France in the preliminary rounds, the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals, and Finland in the semifinals. The Canadians rallied to win their final two games, defeating the Czech Republic in overtime.

Wegovy maker takes on weight loss drug copycat Hims

0

play

Many Americans seeking popular weight loss drugs like Wegovy and Zepbound are turning to telemedicine companies like Hims & Hers for cheaper, compounded alternatives.

These combination drugs were only intended to be widely available during a time when popular brand-name drugs were in short supply. Although the Food and Drug Administration has declared the shortage will end in 2025, telemedicine companies still sell compound versions of anti-obesity drugs, adjust the drugs to different doses, and often sell them at lower prices than drug companies charge for brand-name drugs.

Novo Nordisk, the maker of Wegobee, recently sued Hims & Hers, and the telemedicine provider called the lawsuit a “blatant attack” on Americans who rely on compounded weight loss drugs.

According to KFF, a health policy nonprofit, about 1 in 8 Americans takes GLP-1 drugs for weight loss, diabetes or other conditions. And many customers whose insurance plans don’t cover the drugs have a hard time affording these drugs.

Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly have lowered prices for consumers whose insurance plans do not cover these drugs. These cash-paying customers can buy Wegovy and Zepbound from drug companies, telemedicine portals, retail stores like Costco and Sam’s Club, or the Trump administration’s direct-to-consumer site TrumpRx.

But in the wake of Novo’s lawsuit and federal drug regulators threatening enforcement action, will companies cut back on sales of cheaper, formulated versions of popular weight loss drugs like Wegoby and Eli Lilly’s Zepbound?

Novo Nordisk Group General Counsel John Kuckelman told USA TODAY, “We hope that all compounders involved in bulk compounding will heed this legal action.” “We expect them all to be mindful of the potential consequences of continuing their actions.”

Why is Novo Nordisk filing a lawsuit now?

Novo Nordisk sued Hims & Hers on February 9, alleging that the telemedicine company infringed Novo’s patents by selling a version of Wegovy.

The lawsuit comes less than a week after Hims & Hers announced plans to sell a combined version of Wegovy at an introductory price of $49 per month. Days later, the company canceled its plans after the FDA threatened to take action against Hims & Hers.

Novo Nordisk officials said Hims & Hers’ announcement to launch a tablet version of Wigobee was a last resort. Novo Nordisk officials said that, unlike injectables, there was no shortage of Wegoby tablets and there was no need to sell a combination drug.

“There’s no excuse. There’s no argument that the shortage is the cause,” Kuckelman said. “And frankly, this was outrageous. Not only does this infringe on patents that we take very seriously, but it is a direct challenge to the entire U.S. drug approval framework.”

Hims & Hers officials declined an interview request, but said in a statement that treating obesity requires “accuracy and individualization.” The company still sells GLP-1 injections.

Hims & Hers said it has approximately 2.5 million subscribers across its health products. The company says GLP-1 customers represent a “minority” of its subscribers.

“Limited access, excessive costs, and standardized approaches are not prerequisites for quality care,” Hims & Hers said. “Our rigorous customer-first approach removes the friction of traditional medicine and puts ownership of health back where it belongs: with the consumer.”

Wegovy is the only GLP-1 obesity treatment approved by the FDA

Novo is the only company to receive FDA approval for a GLP-1 weight loss drug. This gave Novo an exclusive window to sell the pills to consumers who want to lose weight without using injections.

“The oral version[of Wegovy]is a great marketing opportunity for Novo Nordisk,” said Howie Forman, director of the MD/MBA program at the Yale School of Management. “Certainly, oral administration is preferable to injection for a significant number of people.”

During an earnings conference call with investors in February, Novo executives emphasized the importance of quickly launching the company’s oral drug. They said an additional 50,000 prescriptions for oral Wegoby are being refilled each week. Additionally, 9 out of 10 consumers who filled prescriptions in the first few weeks paid with cash.

Wegovy pills have a starting price of $149, about $200 less than the injectable version.

Novo won’t have this exclusive sales opportunity forever. Eli Lilly’s weight loss drug Orforglipron could receive FDA approval in April.

Forman said consumers are likely already benefiting from lower prices due to intense competition. Both Novo and Lilly’s weight loss drugs have list prices of more than $1,000, but consumers with insurance can typically pay much less in co-pays and other out-of-pocket costs.

A study by benefits consultant Mercer found that 49% of large employers will cover GLP-1 drugs in 2025, up from 41% in 2023.

Novo and Lilly are also offering discounts for customers paying cash. Lilly announced that customers who purchase a one-month supply of 2.5 mg single-dose vials of Zepbound will now pay $299, a $50 reduction from the previous price of $349. A 5 mg vial costs $399.

Novo has reduced the price of its injectable Wigovy and most Ozempic doses from $499 to $349 per month for consumers who purchase the drug directly from drug companies, telemedicine partners, or retail pharmacies.

“The actual price to consumers for all of these drugs has fallen significantly over the last year,” Forman said. “(Prices) are expected to continue to fall.”

Federal drug regulators are also putting pressure on compounders.

After Hims & Hers first announced plans to offer a version of its Wegovy tablets, the FDA announced it would “take decisive action” against companies that use GLP-1 ingredients in mass-market sales of combination drugs.

“These actions are intended to protect consumers from drugs whose quality, safety, and effectiveness cannot be verified by FDA,” the FDA said.

On February 6, Health and Human Services General Counsel Mike Stewart said the agency had referred Hims & Hers to the Department of Justice for an “investigation into possible violations” of federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

Novo announced that its own tests have found that the ingredients used to make the formulated version of Injectable Wegovy contain up to 86% of impurities. Novo said the combination pill version of the drug contained as much as 75% impurities.

The company said that even small amounts of impurities in medicines can adversely affect the safety and effectiveness of the medicine.

Novo officials contrasted the safety and efficacy standards that FDA-approved drugs such as Wigovy and Ozempic must meet before they can be legally sold. Telemedicine companies and compounding pharmacies do not have to undertake extensive medical research to prove to the FDA that their drugs are safe and effective.

“We have to go through decades of testing, research and investment, as well as the effectiveness and safety of how we use and manufacture the drug,” Kuckelman said.

Hims & Hers defended its safety practices. The company said its formula ingredients are sourced from FDA-registered factories and are accompanied by documentation showing that each batch of ingredients has been tested for impurities.

“We only work with licensed pharmacy partners who maintain high quality standards,” Hims & Hers said.

Other companies selling weight-loss services say pharmacies will continue to provide an important service for patients.

Dr. Michael Snyder, an obesity expert at Future Health, said pharmacies can tailor medications for people who can’t tolerate typical doses. He gave the example of someone who was prescribed a customized statin drug to treat high blood pressure.

But the popularity of weight loss drugs has brought about something completely different.

“We’re in the wild west here when it comes to these GLP-1 drugs,” said Snyder, medical director of HCA HealthOne Rose’s Bariatric Surgery Center.

Snyder said patients need more than just weight loss drugs to control diseases such as obesity. He said too many companies are selling these prescription weight loss drugs without proper medical supervision.

Some patients may not eat enough nutritious food while taking the drug. Others may experience side effects, which can be managed by adjusting the dose, he said.

“My job is to keep people on a path to healthy weight loss,” Snyder said. “I think anyone can lose a lot of weight, but it takes a little bit of effort to do it in a healthy way.”

Elon Musk and DOGE to end subsidies and contracts after one year

0

Experts say the full impact of DOGE cutting tens of thousands of federal contracts and agreements may never be fully known and the controversy remains.

play

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk appeared at a White House press conference on February 11, 2025, to defend his plan to reduce “waste” in the federal government with the Department of Government Efficiency.

For several months last year, the team he assembled and their accomplishments within federal agencies dominated headlines. At President Donald Trump’s request, Musk posed for cameras with a chainsaw to show off the department’s cost savings.

Although the dust-up over DOGE has died down, hundreds of legal actions are underway over many of the approximately 30,000 canceled grants and contracts. USA TODAY analyzed the cuts reported during the first 9.5 months of the new administration to examine the extent of the reported cost savings.

Based on the latest accounting information provided on DOGE’s website (last updated October 4), here’s what we know:

  • Sixty-four agencies, departments, or federal agencies had grants or contracts terminated or early terminated.
  • DOGE reported that the canceled agreements saved $110 billion. This equates to approximately $323 per U.S. resident.
  • Nearly 30% of grants and contracts were already paid in full before termination, resulting in either no immediate savings or less than $1 in savings.
  • The cuts affected Americans in Puerto Rico, Guam, and Washington, D.C.
  • The pace of layoffs reached a high of more than 16,000 in February and March 2025, but slowed to just 373 in September.
  • Termination of subsidies and contracts, as well as freezes not included in the data, continue this fiscal year.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the contract review would bring accountability back to the federal government “that has been needed for many years.”

But for local governments, libraries, museums, and other community anchors, every measurable cost reduction came at a cost, both in dollars and in lifesaving medical care, government disruption, research derailment, and uncertainty.

Experts told USA TODAY that the full direct and indirect cost of DOGE’s layoffs and cancellations will likely never be fully known, and the toll they have taken on Americans and poor people around the world will likely never be known.

“It was just a hurricane that went through the government, a tornado across every agency,” said Scott Delaney, co-founder of Grant Witness. Grant Witness was founded in the midst of the DOGE cuts to track canceled and frozen grants at the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.

The White House did not respond to requests for comment on the savings created by DOGE or whether its efforts had the desired effect.

Impossible to know the full extent of DOGE reduction

Delaney, a former Harvard University scientist whose Alzheimer’s research funding was also included in the cuts, said it’s difficult to summarize specific cuts because federal spending is so difficult to track. “They messed things up in a way that can’t be repaired by being so inaccurate,” he said. “I don’t think we’ll ever really know the full extent of the damage.”

The long-term costs of subsidies and contract cancellations are not tracked by DOGE, and the numbers keep changing.

The available data does not include agreements the administration has been ordered to repair by courts or deals it has negotiated with universities such as Columbia and Harvard.

It also doesn’t take into account frozen subsidies, which are much harder to track, Delaney said.

“It’s very important to understand that just because DOGE says it did it doesn’t mean it actually did it,” he said.

The amounts reported by DOGE are widely debated.

But Delaney said DOGE’s data, even if incomplete, is important because it helps shed light on the scope of events across the federal government.

Delaney and others acknowledge that the federal grant process had many flaws before DOGE made the cuts. “We should always strive to do better,” he said, “but we should do it in good faith and not out of mere hostility toward government or the scientific enterprise more generally.”

Is it a wasteful expense or an important one?

In May, the Environmental Protection Agency canceled a $20 million flood mitigation grant intended to stabilize riverbanks in the small Alaska Native village of Kipnuk. The project was recommended by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and is intended to reduce erosion associated with thawing permafrost and increased coastal flooding events.

Just five months later, in October 2025, when Typhoon Haron hit Alaska’s remote coast, Kipnuk was one of several villages affected by disastrous storm surge and flooding.

EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin defended the criticism, saying that even if plans had not been halted, the project would not have been completed and would not have prevented “the destruction and tragedy caused by such a large and destructive storm.”

His post suggesting that the cancellation would have prevented “$20 million of our hard-working American taxpayers” from being washed away into the Kuskokwim River infuriated Alaska Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski.

“I’m completely offended that there are people who say protecting Alaskan communities is a waste of taxpayer money,” Murkowski said in an October speech.

“We are Americans,” she said. “Everyone affected is an American who deserves to be treated with that level of respect.”

How to stack numbers by state

DOGE, which was rebranded from an existing division, sent employees into Trump’s office shortly after his second inauguration, demanding access to computers and searching for grants and contracts using keywords such as “equity,” “gender,” and “climate change.”

The resulting purge involved thousands of contractors and grant recipients, including more than 500 universities. Long-planned projects, half-finished work, and ongoing research studies saw their funding disappear.

At least 5,400 of the grants and contracts that were terminated by early October could be categorized by specific states, such as local governments or universities. Of these, the total “savings” reported by DOGE include at least:

  • $13.7 billion to state governments
  • $4.6 billion to universities
  • $1.2 billion for local governments
  • $440 million donated to indigenous peoples and tribes

Among the layoffs that are easily tied to specific states, three of the four most populous states had the greatest number of subsidy and contract cuts.

  • 600 – New York
  • 440 – California
  • 310 – Texas

The states with the greatest financial losses are:

  • California – $1.9 billion
  • Texas – $1.8 billion
  • Florida – $1 billion
  • Minnesota – $858 million

However, states with smaller populations had the highest per capita losses:

  • South Dakota – $187 per person, $166 million total
  • Alaska – $177 per person, total $129 million
  • Minnesota – $150 per person, $858 million total
  • Colorado – $123 per person, $708 million total

Dallas County, Texas, saw $4 million in federal funding cut, leading to layoffs and the cancellation of community vaccinations, according to a federal damage tracker by the Partnership for Public Service.

Cuts at all levels of government “put a wrecking ball on everything,” said Monica Medina, NOAA’s former principal deputy assistant secretary and former assistant secretary of state.

“It will be nearly impossible for state and local governments to make up this difference,” Medina said. She and others say the effects will last for years.

Which federal agencies and departments have seen the biggest cuts?

In the first nine months, contracts and grants were terminated at 64 agencies, departments, and other federal agencies.

Contract scrutiny has been blamed for numerous delays across the government, including delays in emergency response during disasters, allowing the Bureau of Meteorology to repair faulty pipes, and allowing wildlife biologists to conduct field surveys.

  • The newly renamed Department of the Army reportedly scrapped at least 850 agreements, totaling about $14 billion in savings.
  • The Department of Health and Human Services has terminated more than 4,300 agreements, including funding earmarked for decades of medical and cancer research. DOGE reported savings of $25 billion.
  • The largest number of layoffs (more than 5,900) occurred with the dissolution of the Agency for International Development (USAID). Dozier reported “savings” of $28.3 billion.

USAID worked to prevent infectious diseases such as HIV and provided medicine and water to people in countries suffering from war, famine, and drought.

Mr. Trump, Budget Director Russell Vought and other Republicans cited examples of wasteful spending at USAID, including those identified in past audits and inspector general reports, and those that were later debunked.

Former USAID officials and other public health experts say closing USAID came at a significant human cost. Health economist Brooke Nichols of ImpactCounter.com estimates that layoffs and disruptions led to more than 788,000 deaths.

According to Reuters, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has repeatedly said no lives have been lost as a result of the cuts.

Litigation and challenge

In addition to dozens of lawsuits filed by states against the administration, many other grant recipients are also challenging the cancellation, said Gillian Blanchard, vice president of the nonprofit group Lawyers 4 Good Government.

“All of these grants are mandated and mandated by Congress,” said Blanchard, who works with the nonprofit Climate Change and Environmental Justice Division, which assists more than 600 organizations in administrative and Federal Claims proceedings.

“Somebody signed on the dotted line and fulfilled their obligation, and then a government agency or department just illegally lifted it,” she said. “In many cases, the reason was as basic as a change in administrative priorities, but in many cases this is illegal.”

“Right now, millions of people across the country are suffering,” Blanchard said.

In November, the White House refuted reports that DOGE no longer exists, saying it was still active. The newspaper cited DOGE’s X post and quoted Scott Kuper, director of human resources management, who called the report “fake news.”

The post said DOGE canceled 78 wasteful contracts, saving taxpayers $335 million compared to the previous week. Similar updates were shared in subsequent weeks, but the data available for download on the website has not been updated since October 4th.

Vought said there was always a vision for DOGE to be organized within a government agency. By June, its leadership had been decentralized to departmental heads, but it has benefited from DOGE’s consulting, he said.

When Musk left the White House in May 2025 after four months as a special civil servant, he acknowledged that DOGE might not reach the $1 trillion goal it once predicted, saying, “There’s a lot of inertia in government when it comes to cutting costs.”

This wage disparity may be the reason your state is struggling financially

play

American families in half the country (25 states) need to earn about $30 an hour, or about $53,000 a year after taxes, to make ends meet, according to an analysis by MoneyLion, an all-in-one financial app platform.

Using data from the 2024 Consumer Expenditure Survey, MoneyLion calculated the cost of “essentials” in each state, including housing, groceries, utilities, medical care, and transportation, and found that Hawaii requires the highest hourly wage of $69.43 to survive. In State Zero, a family of four can survive on less than $20 an hour. According to the report, a family of four is defined as a married couple and their children, with the oldest child between the ages of 6 and 17.

That figure stands in contrast to the federal hourly minimum wage, which remains at the 2009 rate of $7.25, and Washington, D.C., which is technically not a state, has the highest state minimum wage of $17.95 this year, according to Federal Reserve data.

“These numbers highlight how difficult it is for families earning at or near their state’s minimum wage,” MoneyLion said.

Which state requires the highest hourly wage to survive?

Hawaii tops the list with an hourly wage of $69.43 and an annual after-tax wage of $110,782, which covers annual grocery costs of $12,505, housing costs of $62,903 and medical costs of $10,321, according to MoneyLion.

Then:

  • In Massachusetts, on an hourly wage of $54.25, or $89,725 per year after taxes, you pay $9,812 per year for groceries, $49,063 for housing, and $10,788 per year for health care.
  • Californians would need to earn $46.22 an hour, or $79,367 after taxes, each year to cover $10,301 in groceries, $38,298 in housing costs, and $8,387 in medical expenses.

Which state requires the lowest hourly wage to survive?

A family of four in Mississippi and Oklahoma requires a minimum living wage. These are the only two states with hourly wage requirements in the $25 range.

  • Mississippi residents need an hourly wage of $25.35, or $45,424 per year after taxes, to pay for $9,036 in annual grocery costs, $14,788 in housing costs, and $7,541 in medical costs.
  • Oklahomans must earn $25.65 an hour, or $45,620 a year after taxes, to pay $9,074 for groceries, $14,304 for housing, and $7,501 for health care.

How can people save when the cost of living exceeds wages?

Experts say people facing lower wages than they need to cover essentials need to budget well.

Start with small steps, they said.

“Pick one category of overspending and cut it by 20% this month,” said Dmitry Savlansky, CEO of personal finance and budgeting app PocketGuard. “Next month, try something different.”

Try to eliminate unnecessary subscriptions, reduce restaurant expenses, and cut down on unnecessary spending, says certified financial health counselor Rudri Bhatt Patel on the MoneyLion blog. Allocate that money for savings and automate it, she said.

Sablanski said it’s also important to review your budget each month to detect spending and saving patterns so you can adjust accordingly. “Those who see their progress are the ones who keep moving forward,” he says.

AI revolution shakes up tech stocks: Is it time to buy?

0

As software stocks tumble, analysts are weighing whether the decline in Microsoft and its peers is a risk or an opportunity.

Software stocks are falling.

As of February 19, Microsoft stock is down 28% from its all-time high last fall. Oracle stock is also down 55% from its all-time high in late 2025. Salesforce stock has lost 27% of its value this year.

Analysts have offered conflicting and somewhat contradictory theories regarding the software sale. According to one theory, stock traders fear that artificial intelligence will make software companies’ products obsolete and put them out of business. Another narrative suggests that software companies are overspending on AI and not getting enough return on their investments.

In other words, software stocks are falling either because AI is a game changer or because it isn’t. Neither theory is correct.

Software stocks are falling. Has the AI bubble burst?

Whatever the trigger, the software crash is caught up in a larger debate about the so-called AI bubble. The AI bubble is a dramatic rally in technology stocks fueled by excessive enthusiasm about the promise of artificial intelligence.

The S&P Software & Services Index, which tracks software stocks, will fall nearly 20% in 2026. The broader, tech-heavy Nasdaq index is down an even smaller 2.4% since the beginning of the year.

“We’re seeing a lot of really good companies getting really indiscriminately hammered,” Motley Fool senior investment analyst Jason Moser told USA TODAY.

Moser and others say the reversal of fortune is all the more remarkable because software stocks were Wall Street’s darlings for years before the rise of AI.

From early 2016 to late 2021, the S&P Software Index quadrupled, rising from less than 4,000 to more than 16,000. In the age of super-fast internet and cloud computing, software stocks looked like a solid investment.

“At some point, software is going to eat the world,” said Sameer Samana, head of global equities and real assets at Wells Fargo Investment Institute. “These companies basically ruled the world.”

Will software stocks survive the AI revolution?

The AI revolution probably began in November 2022 with the introduction of ChatGPT, an AI-powered chatbot that can answer user questions with conversational text.

Initially, Wall Street hailed AI as a tool that would improve productivity for everyone, including software companies.

“The advent of AI looks like it’s going to be a rising tide that lifts all boats in the technology space,” Samana said. But over time, AI experiments began to look more like “winner-take-all.”

Software stocks plunged in late 2025 as part of a broader shift away from tech stocks due to concerns about an AI bubble.

Almost anyone can create software using “vibe coding”

Software sales accelerated in January amid a wave of enthusiasm for Anthropic’s Claude Code. This is an AI product that reportedly allows users with no coding experience to create their own software, a trend known as “vibe coding.”

What would happen to software companies, stock traders reasoned, if the average American worker could write his own software?

“Rather than buying a ready-to-use system, you can use artificial intelligence to create your own applications,” said James Cox, managing partner at Harris Financial Group.

“Investors are becoming increasingly concerned about industries being disrupted by AI,” Cox said. “And obviously software is part of that.”

Wall Street remains bullish on the big promise that AI holds to transform American workplaces and American homes.

But in recent weeks, stock traders have seemed less enraptured by the promise of AI and increasingly worried about the jobs and products it might consume.

For software companies, investors are now worried that “the software they’re building is actually going to put them out of business,” said Caleb Silver, editor-in-chief of Investopedia.

For everyday investors, this drop in stock prices raises important questions. “Is now a good time to invest in software companies?” How to buy the dip?

When will the software stock crash end?

Analysts caution against predicting when or why the decline will end.

“I think this is something that will probably linger for a while,” Moser said.

But he and other stock experts say falling stock prices don’t necessarily mean big software companies are facing an existential crisis over AI.

Microsoft, for example, remains one of the most touted stocks on Wall Street. There are probably few analysts who predict that AI will disrupt businesses. And the company’s stock is currently selling at a 28% discount.

“This is a gift,” Cox said. “We can now acquire these companies at significantly lower revenue multiples than we could have done six months ago.”

But don’t expect software stocks to stay the same. The days of software companies “eating the world” may already be over.

“These stocks have brought in huge profits,” Silver said. “Accept the fact that you may not be able to generate the same profits for the next 10 years.”

MILAN — Figure skating concluded at the 2026 Winter Olympics with a dazzling show of glitz, flips, twirls and talent at the Figure Skating Exhibition Gala. The sport’s medal winners and top stars gathered to have fun on the ice and put on a show in front of a packed audience at the Milan Ice Skating Arena.

This includes all of Team USA, who will be skating together as gold medal winners. Personally, Amber Glenn started the Madonna program, Ilia Marin completed four back flips, Madison Chock and Evan Bates gracefully skated on the white sheet, and Alisa Liu’s joy overflowed again. Oh, and one of the gold medal winners became Kung Fu Panda. what? !

According to the Milan-Cortina show summary, the skaters’ performances were combined with “contemporary and interactive content through the use of projections, LED screens and lighting design.”

A replay of the exhibition gala will be available on NBC and Peacock. See below for live updates from USA TODAY Sports.

Introducing Team USA 2026: Get to know the athletes behind the game

Figure skating exhibition gala photos

Alisa Liu could barely keep her eyes open the day after winning the gold medal in singles figure skating at the Olympics.

Well, she was wide awake in celebration. And when she took to the ice in a blue dress, no one dared to take a nap.

Although she only had one triple, she showed grace and showmanship when she skated to the American side (along with Zara Larsson) by the Pink Panthers.

She was excited about her appearance at the gala. Although her performance wasn’t as moving as Ilia Marin’s, it gave the audience something to think about as we look ahead to 2030.

Will Liu return to the Olympic stage?

Will she be able to protect her money?

It’s probably too soon to know that she has taken her final spin on the ice in Milan.

What do you do after winning gold in men’s figure skating? Well, if you’re Mikhail Shaidlov of Kazakhstan, you put on a panda costume, take to the ice, only to get beaten up by Deadpool and Mortal Kombat fighters. Read more about the hilarious performance here.

Ilya Marin took to the ice to hear phone notifications ringing and cameras snapping.

Then, be silent.

Skating solo for the first time since falling from first to eighth in the men’s free skate, Marinin delivered an eclectic and unforgettable performance that brought the devil straight to the ice at the gala, but this time there was no fear.

Wearing a gray sweatshirt and black jeans, Malin skated to NF’s song as if he were being pulled along as the line, “I’m a puppet on strings, I don’t have a choice,” echoed through the arena.

“Is this what you wanted?” The song ended.

The crowd stood in support as Marinin continued to wave.

The husband-and-wife team of Madison Chock and Evan Bates brought intimacy to the ice as they skated to Melody Gardot’s “Once I Was Loved.”

They creatively used white sheets to restrain them so that the chocks would wrap and unwind as Bates gripped the other end of the prop.

Was this the Olympic swan song? That’s hard to tell considering Chock is 33 and Bates 36. But the American duo, silver medalists at the 2026 Winter Olympics, delivered a performance of delicate artistry as they departed Milan.

Ilya Marinin, who skated with the gold medal-winning team, repeated his signature moves, starting with a quad, then a backflip, and ending with a raspberry twist.

Lined up with “Free Bird”. While we’re at it, let’s do “Feel This Moment” with “We Will Rock You.”

Team USA’s seven skaters let their hair down and took to the ice to sing along in celebration to a high-energy music montage.

American Women Amber Glenn and Alisa Liu also danced to Beyoncé’s “Diva.”

Marinin persisted in his next act so that Estonian figure skater Nina Petrokina, who was skating to “Cell Block Tango” from the musical “Chicago,” could beat him with a finger gun.

Legendary actor and martial artist Jackie Chan held two stuffed pandas as he congratulated the athletes who performed at the exhibition gala.

“It’s a great honor to be here,” he said, wishing the crowd “health” and happiness and praying for “love and peace” in the world as the Lunar New Year approaches.

Amber Glenn Exhibition Gala Performance

Glenn appeared in a sparkly black outfit to skate to “That’s Life” at the Lady Gala. She let her hair down, skated with freedom and joy, and landed her jumps to the applause of the crowd. This may be Glenn’s last performance on the Olympic stage. At 26, she became the oldest U.S. female skater to qualify for the Olympic team since 1928.

What is an exhibition gala?

This is the grand finale show for fans to see figure skating’s biggest stars back on the ice. Organizers of this year’s Milan-Cortina say it is “a tribute to athletes and their stories – stories of passion, sacrifice and above all courage. The courage to embrace their own talents, never give up and turn their challenges into their life’s purpose.”

“But it’s also an encouragement to the fans who follow the competition to never stop fighting for their dreams, no matter what they are,” the show synopsis for the competition reads.

That description is fitting, given that the players’ personal stories, struggles and mental health were center stage, along with their talent. Ilya Marinin spoke of his “invisible conflict” after falling during the men’s free skate and finishing eighth. Amber Glenn similarly expressed her support for the LGBTQ community and spoke about the criticism she faced for fighting through a disappointing short program. And Alisa Liu won an Olympic gold medal after quitting competing completely two years ago.

Complete list of skaters, start times and exhibition gala music

The program is divided into four parts, with a break after the first two parts. Start times and music for all Team USA skaters are below:

  • Amber Glenn: 8:32 p.m. Lady Gaga’s “That’s Life”

Main elements of the show

According to the synopsis, the show consists of the following main elements:

  • The opening number features Italian figure skating legend Carolina Kostner as the main character. She performs duets using 3D projections in works that combine elegance, creativity and modernity.
  • Performance of a single athlete participating in this Winter Olympics. The athletes will be divided into four groups, each presenting a themed segment inspired by the opening act.
  • Comprehensive performance by the hosting team (Italian team) and the winning team (American team).
  • A traditional grand finale sees all athletes return to the ice for group choreography and final salutations.

Who is Carolina Kostner?

Kostner is a legend in Italian figure skating. She achieved many firsts for Italy and is also the 2014 Olympic bronze medalist. She was also the 2012 world champion and won medals at five other world championships. She is a five-time European champion and has won a total of 11 medals, making her the most decorated skater in the competition’s history. She is a nine-time Italian national champion and 2003 world junior bronze medalist.

Four acts of figure skating exhibition gala

Each skater was assigned to one of four acts in the competition. Following tradition, the gold medal winners enter the final stage. The names of each act are:

  • Act 1: a dreamlike journey
  • Act 2: Everything is new. Everything lights up.
  • Special performance: hosting team
  • break
  • Special performance: winning team
  • Act 3: this is the challenge
  • Act 4: become one

According to the program synopsis, the performance is a story and “a metaphor for the relationship between athletes and their talents, the two protagonists of the performance.”

Italian skater Carolina Kostner will represent the athletes in the opening number. The talent is expressed through light projection, “creating an abstract character that interacts with the athlete.”

Then there are four one-minute segments. Between each segment, the colors change, the shape, texture and rhythm of the talent projection evolve, and the original music and lighting changes. Before the final segment, Kostner’s costume will also change.

Here is a description of each segment provided by the organizers of Milano Cortina:

  • Segment 1 – Dream Journey: A girl steps onto the ice for the first time. She explores the ice like a blank page, falling and discovering, until a mysterious line (a visual expression of genius) appears before her. It’s the beginning of a quiet game full of curiosity, movement, and growing connections. This stage represents the beginning of the athlete’s journey – the discovery of the world and its elements.
  • Segment 2 – Everything is new. Everything lights up: Skaters and lines chase each other and begin playing and dancing together. From this encounter, a deep harmony is born. Talent takes on a more tangible form, as if it has always existed and is now being recognized for the first time. This stage represents the moment when an athlete begins to gain confidence in discipline, experiment, and have fun.
  • Segment 3 – This is the challenge. When that passion turns into a profession, it’s more than just a game. It comes down to hard work, sacrifice, and discipline. Talent becomes oppressive. But through struggle comes strength. They no longer just dance together, they grow together. This stage represents the moment when things get serious. Because athletes have everything they need to compete at the highest level, sacrifices, challenges, and hard work occur, and the effort can sometimes feel overwhelming.
  • Segment 4 – Become One: The fight disappears when we stop fighting our talents and instead embrace them and follow our destiny. Every gesture becomes natural, every movement comes from within. And when the talent finds its place and merges with the skater, it ceases to have a life of its own, becoming a shining light trail behind her, as she shines with a new light. The final stage represents the moment when the athlete was able to find a balance with his talent. They surrender to their talents, become one with them, and bring out the best in them.

Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce sued by sneaker company over trademark

0

play

Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce are named in a lawsuit filed by sneaker company 1587 Sneakers alleging trademark infringement.

The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York on February 17, alleging that 1587 Prime, a Kansas City steakhouse owned by the Chiefs star, is hurting the sneaker business, according to court records.

The restaurant will open on September 17, 2025 and will be named after Mahomes and Kelce’s jersey numbers. The lawsuit states that 1587 Sneakers began selling its products on April 13, 2023, and claims it should be the first company to do so. The 1587 sneaker is named after 1587, the year Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders first arrived in America.

The company has not applied for the “1587” trademark until October 2025, according to ESPN, adding that the application is still under review by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, adding that the trademark is in the clothing category. This is different from “1587 Prime,” which was filed in December 2023 and falls under the bar and restaurant category.

“I think this is a difficult case for sneaker companies,” Josh Gerben, a trademark attorney at Gerben IP, which doesn’t represent either party, told ESPN. “Trademarks can coexist in different industries. … Given that the trademarks are essentially the same here, are a restaurant and a shoe company too close together? Could consumers be confused by thinking they are affiliated with each other?”

1587 Sneakers says in its lawsuit that it sells its shoes and clothing nationally, meaning it reaches every state. In addition, they have been featured in the Boston Globe, Teen Vogue, news stations like ABC and NBC, and even on “Shark Tank.”

The shoe company claims the steakhouse is causing confusion among consumers, with many people contacting the company believing it is affiliated with 1587 Prime.

1587 Sneakers is asking the restaurant to stop using its name, stop selling products bearing it, and be awarded punitive damages.

President Trump says he will send a hospital ship to Greenland

0

play

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Donald Trump said on February 21 that he is working with Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry to send a hospital ship to Greenland, a Danish territory that Trump is seeking to capture.

President Trump announced the plan on social media shortly before hosting a dinner for Republican governors at the White House, where he sat next to Landry for a conversation.

“Working with our wonderful Governor of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, we are going to send a big hospital ship to Greenland to take care of the many people who are sick and cannot be treated there. It’s happening right now!!!” Trump said.

Neither the White House nor Mr. Landry’s office responded to questions for this post about whether the ship had been requested by Denmark or Greenland or which sick people needed help. There was no immediate comment from the Department of the Army.

Denmark’s King Frederik visited Greenland last week for the second time in a year, in an attempt to show solidarity with Greenland against President Trump’s push to buy the land.

Greenland, Denmark and the United States held talks late last month to resolve the situation after months of tensions within the NATO defense alliance.

Trump’s post came hours after Denmark’s Joint Arctic Command announced it had evacuated a crew member in need of emergency medical treatment from a U.S. submarine in Greenland waters, seven nautical miles from Greenland’s capital Nuuk.

It’s unclear what Landry has to do with the incident or if the post has anything to do with the evacuation.

The U.S. Navy has two hospital ships, the Mercy and the Comfort, but neither is stationed in Louisiana.

Vikings wide receiver Rondale Moore dies at age 25

0

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Rondale Moore passed away on Saturday, February 21st.

Moore’s death was confirmed by Floyd County (Ind.) Coroner Matthew Tomlin to the Louisville Courier-Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network. Moore was 25 years old.

The cause of his death is still under investigation, Tomlin said.

Jeff Brohm, Moore’s coach at Purdue, confirmed the news of Moore’s death in a social media post on his personal X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday.

“Rondale Moore was an absolute joy to coach. He was the ultimate competitor who would not back down from any challenge,” Brohm said in the post. “Rondale had a work ethic that was second to none. He was a great teammate who would get through any situation. We all loved Rondale, and we loved his smile and competitive nature, always trying to please everyone he interacted with.”

“We send all our thoughts and prayers to Rondale and his family and we love him very much.”

Moore played for Purdue from 2018 to 2020 and was selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Moore spent the 2025 season with the Vikings, but suffered a season-ending knee injury in the 2025 preseason opener and missed the entire season.

NFL world reacts to Rondale Moore’s death

Kansas City Chiefs receiver Hollywood Brown, who played with Moore during the 2022-23 season at Arizona State, said in a post Saturday that he texted Moore “a few hours ago.”

“We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Rondale Moore,” the Vikings said in a statement. “While we work to understand the facts, we have spoken with Rondale’s family to express our condolences and express our full support to the Minnesota Vikings. We will also remain in contact with our players, coaches and staff, and provide counseling and emotional support resources to anyone in need.”

“Our thoughts are with Rondale’s family and friends at this devastating time.”

The Vikings also released a statement from head coach Kevin O’Connell.

“We are shocked by the news of Rondale’s passing. Although Rondale was a member of the Vikings for only a short time, he was a man we knew well and cared deeply about. He was a humble, soft-spoken and respectful young man who was proud of his Indiana roots. As a player, he was disciplined, dedicated and resilient despite facing numerous adversities throughout his career due to injuries.

“We are all saddened by the fact that he will not go on to fulfill his NFL dreams and we will never have the chance to see him in action. Our prayers are with Ron Dale’s family, friends, teammates, and coaches as we all deal with this tragic news.”

The NFLPA also released the following statement:

Shifting dynamics in Congressman Crockett, AG Paxton contests

0

Rep. Jasmine Crockett is most likely to defeat the Republican in the Texas Senate race in the general election, according to a new poll.

Crockett, a Dallas Democrat, defeated Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in the general election showdown for the Senate seat currently held by Sen. John Cornyn, according to a Hart Research poll. Paxton is currently on the ballot ahead of Cornyn, but the Republican primary is likely headed for a runoff.

“I have been working and fighting for the Texans since before I entered this race,” Crockett said in a news release. “Voters know my leadership and trust me to fight for them. Texas voters are smarter than D.C. gives them credit for. Texans can cut through the noise and not be swayed by pundits and podcasters.”

Crockett is currently in a close primary race against Texas Rep. James Talarico (D-Austin), an Austin Democrat who recently appeared on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and significantly increased his name recognition and campaign funds.

The poll also confronted voters with the negative ads they would likely see if Crockett won the primary, but those polled were unfazed by the attacks.

“I’m on par with Latino voters and young people, independents support me by double-digit margins, and I’m the candidate supported by working-class voters,” she said. “We need this person to rebuild our victorious democratic coalition.”

On the Republican side, Mr. Paxton is looking to use support from Turning Point Action, an organization founded by Charlie Kirk (a PAC of Turning Point USA), to strengthen his lead over Mr. Cornyn.

A new ad from Paxton’s campaign features Kirk, who was assassinated last year, praising him as an “American patriot” and “an amazing lawyer who loves the Constitution” and is “doing a great job.”

“Charlie Kirk is an inspiration to millions of people around the world. I am blessed to know him and call him a friend,” Paxton said in a news release. “Right now, we are in a civilized battle to save America and our future, and there must be conservative warriors willing to go to war against the radical left. I am honored to be the endorsed leader of Turning Point Action Fight for Texas in the Senate. I will continue to work tirelessly to protect the freedoms of future generations.”

The bodies of all nine skiers missing in an avalanche in California’s Sierra Nevada have been found, the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office announced on February 21.

In a press conference, Sheriff’s Office Lt. Dennis Haak said California Highway Patrol (CHP) and the California National Guard assisted in recovering the ninth remaining skier on February 21, and the body was recovered at 10:58 a.m. Pacific Time.

On February 18, search and rescue teams in California rescued eight of the nine missing skiers caught in a powerful avalanche near Lake Tahoe, USA TODAY previously reported.

At approximately 11:30 a.m. on February 17, a thunderous avalanche struck a group of nine female and six male skiers, ranging in age from 30 to 55, near Castle Peak in northern Truckee, California, during dangerous winter conditions that have dramatically increased the risk of avalanches across the region.

Officials said several skiers were initially trapped in the slide, prompting a massive rescue effort involving Black Hawk helicopters, ground search teams and avalanche dogs. The accident is believed to be the deadliest avalanche in the United States in the past 40 years.

How was the body of the 9th skier recovered?

Haak said CHP arrived at the avalanche scene early on Feb. 21 to rescue the ninth skier, but were unable to complete the hoist due to strong winds. However, the California National Guard continued hoist operations and recovered the last skier, he added.

Has any skier survived an avalanche?

Six members of the group (four men and two women) survived the avalanche and were rescued after crews arrived on February 17 after battling the weather for several hours. Two people were taken to the hospital with injuries, the sheriff’s office said. Initially 10 people were thought to be missing, but authorities later updated that number to nine.

Officials identified the genders of the deceased as seven women and two men.

Who was the skier who died?

Nevada County Sheriff Shanann Moon identified the nine victims during a Feb. 21 press conference.

  • Carrie Atkin, 42, of South Lake Tahoe, California
  • Liz Clabaugh (52 years old, resident of Boise, Idaho)
  • Kate Morse, 45, of Soda Springs and Tiburon, Calif.
  • Caroline Sekar, 45, lives in Soda Springs, Calif., and San Francisco.
  • Kate Witt, 43, of Greenbrae, California
  • Andrew Alisandratos, 34, Verdy, Nevada
  • Michael Henry, 30, of Tampa, Florida
  • Daniel Keetley, 44, resident of Soda Springs and Lake Forest, California.
  • Nikki Chu, 42 years old, lives in South Lake Tahoe, California.

Alisandratos, Henry and Chu worked for Blackbird Mountain Guides, according to the sheriff’s office. Additionally, the victims included members of Sugar Bowl Academy, an elite ski school.

Regarding the Feb. 17 avalanche, the school said in a statement on Feb. 18 that “multiple members of the Sugar Bowl Academy community and others with strong ties to the Sugar Bowl, Donner Summit, and backcountry communities were killed.” “Sugar Bowl Academy is committed to supporting our players, students, staff, and families as they overcome this tragedy.”

Sugar Bowl Academy did not say which of the victims were members of the school.

The New York Yankees and their fans were treated to all the glory of the senses at the Grapefruit League opener at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa.

Aaron Judge’s two home runs and prospect Spencer Jones’ cracking bat with a monster shot. Feeling the 83 degree sunshine in Hillsborough County.

And, well, the smell of raw sewage.

A pair of sewer pipes broke outside the main entrance to George M. Steinbrenner Field, causing fans to tiptoe around what security guards called “poo water.”

The situation underground was even worse.

The Yankees’ clubhouse was flooded with sewage, and manager Aaron Boone told reporters, “It’s a terrible situation. It’s all over the place.”

The sewage reportedly did not reach the part of the clubhouse where the players’ lockers were located. However, the confusion forced Yankees players to be interviewed in the hallway, where the smell of funk was still evident.

It’s a completely different way to start playing Grapefruit League.

It’s an unfortunate development for the stadium, which has undergone multimillion-dollar renovations in recent years after the Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays relocated during the first regular season last year due to hurricane damage.

The good news for the Yankees was that they defeated the Detroit Tigers 20-2. In less-than-optimal news, the New York Mets are scheduled to be on site in the morning, and will have time to fix the problem right away.

And I hope the smell goes away too.

Chevrolet, BMW, and Subaru models to be discontinued in 2026

Finding a new sedan is becoming difficult.

The Chevrolet Malibu, Subaru Legacy, and Volvo S90 are among the few vehicles that won’t return for the 2026 model year. Their departures come as automakers adjust their portfolios to respond to changing demands from U.S. drivers, including an increased interest in SUVs.

“The decline of sedans continues,” said Justin Fischer, media specialist at CarEdge, an online auto marketplace, even though sedans are often more affordable than larger sedans. “We’re seeing many affordable sedans being phased out, so we expect the average selling price of new cars in the U.S. to rise in 2026 for that reason alone.”

We will introduce the models whose production will end in 2025.

Audi A4

As USA TODAY previously reported, Audi’s A4 sedan has arrived.

The sedan will be replaced by the new A5 Sportback as part of Audi’s efforts to transition all internal combustion engine cars to odd-numbered model names and all even-numbered cars to electric models, spokesman Mark Dahnke said.

The new A5 Sportback went on sale in June last year, and Dahnke said a high-performance RS 5 model would also arrive “in the near future.”

Cadillac XT6, XT4

Cadillac has ended production of the XT6, a three-row SUV, at the end of 2025. According to the Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network, the XT6’s target audience is households with annual incomes of $200,000 or more.

Production of gasoline-powered SUVs at parent company General Motors’ Spring Hill Assembly Plant in Tennessee will be replaced by a new all-electric SUV, Vistik, according to the Free Press.

As for the XT4, production of the small SUV at GM’s Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City, Kansas ended in January 2025.

BMW XM base

BMW will discontinue half of its XM portfolio. In June, the company announced that it would only offer one XM SUV model with the “XM label” and that the base XM design would be discontinued with the 2026 model year.

The XM Label is the most powerful road vehicle manufactured by BMW M, a BMW subsidiary focused on high-performance cars, with a total system output of 738 horsepower. By comparison, the XM base delivers up to 644 horsepower.

chevrolet malibu

General Motors will end production of the Chevrolet Malibu midsize sedan at the end of 2024, making 2025 the last model year for the nameplate.

The production halt comes as GM uses the Fairfax Assembly Plant to produce the electric Chevrolet Bolt and gasoline-powered Chevrolet Equinox. The company announced in June that the plant is scheduled to begin construction of the Bolt by the end of 2025 and the Equinox in mid-2027.

Infiniti QX50, QX55

According to spokeswoman Ashli Bobo, the QX50 compact luxury SUV and QX55 luxury crossover coupe will no longer be sold in the Americas after the 2025 model year.

Bobo noted that the brand offers a “refreshed” luxury crossover SUV, the QX60, and introduced another luxury SUV, the QX80 Sport. Infiniti is also focusing on two new nameplates: the QX65 crossover coupe and the Vision QXe electric SUV.

Lexus LC Hybrid Coupe, RC, RC F

Lexus announced in January 2025 that it would say goodbye to its RC and RC F sports cars after the 2025 model year. The decision was made after 10 years on the market and more than 90,000 units sold, according to a news release.

Lexus will also bring the LC Hybrid Coupe to the U.S. market for the 2026 model year. According to parent company Toyota’s June 2025 sales report, 790 LC hybrids were sold in the first half of 2025, compared to only 7 gas LCs.

Mercedes-Benz EQB

The EQB, an all-electric compact SUV, will not be sold in the U.S. or Canada after the 2025 model year. The company remains “fully committed to electrification,” said spokesman Andrew Brudnicki, noting that the new all-electric CLA sedan is scheduled to arrive at U.S. dealerships late last year.

Porsche 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman

Porsche previously confirmed that the two 718 sports cars will end production in 2025. Production of the Macan, a compact SUV equipped with a gasoline engine, is scheduled to end in 2026.

subaru legacy

According to a Subaru news release, production of the Subaru Legacy ended last spring. The company has sold more than 1.3 million units in the U.S. over six generations since the sedan’s debut in 1989.

Subaru said in an April statement that the production end “reflects the market’s transition from passenger cars to SUVs and crossovers, and Subaru’s transition to electric and fully electric vehicles.” The company previously announced plans to produce eight types of electric vehicles by 2028.

Volvo S60, S90, EC40

Sales of the mid-sized luxury sedan “S60” and the large-sized luxury sedan “S90” will be discontinued in the United States at the end of the 2025 model year.

Volvo spokesman Thomas Schulz said the Volvo brand is discontinuing the model as it continues to evaluate its portfolio “in line with customer needs and sales demands,” noting the sedan market is in decline. Schulz said tariffs also played a role in the decision to end sales of the S90 in the United States.

Volvo will end the five-year production run of the S60 at its South Carolina plant in 2024 and focus on production of the EX90 electric SUV and the XC60 SUV.

Schulz said the company has also stopped importing the EC40 electric SUV.

MILAN — This time there was only Malin’s magic.

Let me tell you, this was just an exhibition, not a competition for medals or heritage. But Ilia Marin accomplished it. Like only an ice skating showman can do.

Two quads.

back flip.

Ballet artistry and street credibility.

After her four-minute routine, the crowd at the ice skating exhibition gala cheered for Marinin.

“This message, this program, this song really resonated with me. It really expressed how I was feeling this past year leading up to the Olympics,” Marinin said. “So much pressure, so much doubt and everything around me and the noise of the media… It was so overwhelming.”

Watch Olympic figure skating at Peacock

During the on-ice celebration, there was a touch of sadness at witnessing Malinin’s immense talent and artistry just days after he qualified for the event, finishing eighth in the free stakes in the men’s individual event.

“No matter what happened, I’m still very grateful to be here and I want to show the world that we are human too,” he said.

During his performance at the exhibition, he exuded confidence. The self-proclaimed “quadruple god” jumped into the air with his signature quadruple spin. Not once, but twice, followed by a magical backflip.

He was also wearing some clothes. He is wearing a dark-colored hoodie. She wears dark-colored pants that appear to be painted white on the front and back.

He glided across the ice, shaking his sandy blonde mane. Truly, it was a moment that reminded us just how much skill this 21-year-old American has and what we’ll see in 2030 when she next skates on the Olympic stage.
