US women’s hockey declines invitation to President Trump’s State of the Union address

The gold medal-winning U.S. women’s hockey team declined the White House’s offer to attend Tuesday’s State of the Union address, citing “timing and previously scheduled academic and professional commitments.”

The women’s team won the gold medal with a come-from-behind 2-1 overtime victory over Canada, with Hilary Knight breaking the U.S. Olympic scoring record and Megan Keller scoring the winning goal.

The U.S. men’s team defeated Canada on Sunday to win the gold medal with a 2-2 record.

President Donald Trump then called the men’s team, invited these players to the State of the Union address and visit the White House, and offered to transport them on a military plane.

He also said on a conference call, “I have to say, we’re going to have to bring a women’s team, you know that?”

The president added, “I’m pretty sure I’ll probably be impeached.”

A USA Hockey spokesperson said the women’s team received an invitation but will not be able to participate.

“We sincerely appreciate the invitation to join the gold medal-winning U.S. women’s hockey team and are deeply grateful for the recognition of their extraordinary accomplishments,” the spokesperson said. “Due to timing and academic and professional commitments scheduled after the Olympics, the athletes are unable to participate. They are honored to participate and grateful for the recognition.”

The Women’s Professional Hockey League has a game on Thursday, and the U.S. team’s college hockey players have a game on Friday. The NHL season resumes on Wednesday.

Upper trims also feature upscale upholstery and a better audio system than the new base model. Another big difference is that the premium all-wheel drive model has a towing capacity of 11,000 pounds, while the more affordable model only has a towing capacity of 7,500 pounds.

Other than towing capacity, the most affordable Cybertruck and its premium trims have virtually identical performance specifications. Tesla temporarily stripped the Cybertruck of features to offer a budget model and make EVs more appealing to the average new car buyer.

WASHINGTON – Congressional Democrats say President Donald Trump’s new 15% global tariffs cannot last beyond 150 days, creating a new hurdle for the White House following a heartbreaking defeat at the Supreme Court.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said on February 23 that Senate Democrats will block any efforts this summer to extend import taxes that the president quickly imposed after the high court struck down sweeping emergency tariffs.

“Democrats will not go along with President Trump’s promotion of economic carnage,” Schumer said in a statement.

The opposition from Democrats in Congress was expected, but it underscored the challenges the White House now faces in preserving one of the president’s favorite policy tools after a Supreme Court justice ruled that the legal basis for his fees was illegal.

Shortly after the decision was made on February 20, President Trump said he intended to use another decades-old law, Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, to impose a 10% import tariff worldwide. He later raised it to 15%.

But unlike President Trump’s previous strategies, the new strategy has an expiration date. Section 122 tariffs expire in 150 days unless extended by Congress.

With 60 votes in the Senate and no support from Democrats, any effort to remain Democratic will almost certainly be doomed on arrival.

Used EV prices drop after tax credits end due to soaring prices of Tesla models

Since the federal tax credit for used electric cars ended last fall, prices for used electric cars from almost every manufacturer have fallen, with the exception of Tesla models and the Porsche Taycan, which have soared in price.

Since the EV credit ended on September 30, 2025, the average price of used Tesla models has increased by 4.3%, while the price of used electric vehicles from nearly every other manufacturer has decreased by an average of 3.6%, according to new research from iSeeCars.com.

The study only includes EVs that have been in production for at least four years, so Ford Motor Co., with its Mach-E, is the only U.S. automaker with an EV on the list.

Karl Brauer, executive analyst at iSeeCars, said Tesla’s prices are rising in the used market compared to falling prices for other brands because demand for Tesla in the used car market remains strong. He said there is a core group of shoppers who either can’t afford a new Tesla or want to wait until they can get a better price by buying a used model.

“Even after the political turmoil of the last year, there is still a large and loyal Tesla fan base in the new and used car world,” Brauer said, referring to the turmoil caused by Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s involvement in the Trump administration. “These price trends suggest that Tesla loyalty in the used market is stronger than nearly every other electric brand and model.”

Brauer said the decline in non-Tesla EV values ​​is likely due to the loss of up to $4,000 in federal tax credits on eligible used EVs, in particular, and the need to lower prices to find buyers.

“Tesla fans are passionate fans of cars and electric vehicles, both new and used,” Brauer said. “Non-EV buyers are less interested in technology and, as a result, more price sensitive.”

Buyers can find value in used EVs

For car shoppers, this means if you’re looking for a good value used EV, you might be able to find a used non-Tesla model at a good price right now.

“If an electric vehicle meets your needs, you should take advantage of the opportunity to buy a cheaper used EV,” Brauer said. “Tesla is doing well in the used market, but there are many other options to consider besides Tesla, many of which have similar range to Tesla but offer newer styling, more traditional interior design, and control layouts that many consumers prefer.”

Brauer said some of these models may have higher depreciation costs than Tesla, but because of lower initial costs, the total cost of ownership could end up being about the same.

If you wait a while, it might get even better. Brauer said the number of EV leases is increasing from 2023 to 2025, which means a large number of EVs will enter the used market as leases end in the coming years.

“This increase in EV leasing revenue and the loss of credits for new and used EVs will result in more supply than demand and used EV prices will fall,” Brauer said. “Buyers looking to purchase a used EV will find more choice and lower prices in the coming years. And because all electric vehicle batteries come with a federally mandated eight-year, 100,000-mile warranty, these buyers should feel confident purchasing a three- or four-year-old EV.”

Used EV market is strong

The federal tax credit for used EVs ended on September 30th, along with a similar tax credit of up to $7,500 off qualifying new EVs.

The iSeeCars study analyzed the list prices of more than 1.7 million used cars sold in September 2025 and January 2026 with a one- to five-year decline to identify price trends since the EV credit was cancelled. The study only looks at EVs produced in the past four years, so it doesn’t include many of the Detroit Three. Ford Lightning goes on sale in spring 2022. Low-volume models and large vehicles are also excluded from the analysis, which is why General Motors’ GMC Hummer EV is not included in the analysis.

The study aggregated drivetrains and models to calculate average prices and compared them over two time periods.

According to the same study, comparing the price trends of used EVs and used gasoline cars since the end of the EV credit, the price of EVs has increased by 3.5%, while the average price of gasoline cars has fallen by 2%, suggesting that the used EV market is solid. However, the company pointed out that the price increase for used EVs is almost entirely driven by Tesla’s price increase.

The average price of a used gasoline car in September was $31,900, and the average price in January was $31,249.

“Tesla still commands a large portion of the used EV market, meaning Tesla’s price increases have led to an overall increase in used EV prices since September,” Brauer said.

EVs with the highest sales volume will be hit the hardest.

“Pricing for low-cost electric vehicles has not been successful since the EV Credit expired, with high-volume models such as the Hyundai Kona Electric, Volkswagen ID.4, Kia Niro EV and Ford Mustang Mach-E down more than 5%,” Brauer said.

Trump abandons Supreme Court ahead of birthright citizenship ruling

President Trump’s criticism of the civil rights issue came in the same social media post in which he criticized the high court for its ruling on emergency tariffs.

WASHINGTON – After a landslide defeat at the Supreme Court on the tariff issue, President Donald Trump asked the high court to avoid making an “erroneous” ruling in a pending case in which the administration argued that not everyone born in the United States is automatically a citizen.

The 14th Amendment grants birthright citizenship to people born in the United States and has been interpreted for more than 100 years to apply to more than just the children of diplomats.

But Trump argued that the provision was aimed at the children of former slaves, not those temporarily in the country on visas or the children of immigrants without legal permission to enter the country. The justices have scheduled arguments in the case for April 1.

“This Supreme Court will find a way to the wrong conclusion, and that conclusion will once again make China and other countries happy and prosperous,” Trump said.

In addition to criticizing past decisions, President Trump shifted gears and lobbied for future decisions. His claim to birthright citizenship came in the same social media post in which he criticized the Supreme Court on February 20 for an unrelated ruling overturning his emergency tariffs. Both subjects are his top domestic priorities on the economy and immigration.

The Fourteenth Amendment was adopted in 1868 after the Civil War.

The proposed amendment states, “All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof are citizens of the United States and of the state in which they reside.”

The phrase “subject to its jurisdiction” has traditionally excluded citizenship for children born to foreign diplomats.

The Supreme Court’s 1898 decision in United States v. Wong Kim Ark upheld the citizenship rights of a San Francisco-born man whose parents were Chinese citizens.

Lower courts have opposed President Trump’s policy proposal to suspend citizenship recognition for children born to temporary visitors and illegal immigrants. But the Trump administration appealed to the Supreme Court.

“The lower court’s decision invalidates a policy most important to the President and his administration, in a way that undermines border security,” Attorney General John Sauer said in the Justice Department’s appeal. “These decisions confer the privileges of American citizenship to hundreds of thousands of ineligible people without legal legitimacy.”

President Trump predicted the Supreme Court would rule that the 14th Amendment is not limited to children of slaves, despite citing the “exact timing” of its drafting and ratification after the Civil War.

“I want the Supreme Court to continue to make decisions that are very bad and harmful to the future of our country. I have a job to do,” Trump said.

WASHINGTON – The U.S. State Department has expanded its shelter-in-place advisory for Americans living in Mexico to include popular tourist destinations amid escalating violence following the killing of a powerful drug cartel leader in a military operation.

How healthy is the US economy ahead of the State of the Union?

Economists say the Supreme Court’s repeal of tariffs is unlikely to be a major move.

When President Donald Trump delivers his State of the Union address to Congress on February 24, he is likely to point to the strong economy as a key indicator of the state of affairs in the United States.

In fact, inflation has fallen faster than most analysts expected. Job growth accelerated in January, also faster than economists expected. And, perhaps more importantly, the economy is poised to accelerate further this spring as consumers receive larger tax refunds than in the past thanks to the landmark tax and spending bill passed last year.

But that economic picture is inconsistent with another picture, and the opposition Democratic Party may choose to highlight that instead.

Even if inflation has slowed, prices remain unaffordable for many Americans. Growth is concentrated in a few narrow sectors of the economy. Health care and social assistance accounted for almost all of the jobs gained in January, and spending on AI equipment is one of the biggest drivers of GDP growth. Meanwhile, consumer confidence fell to its lowest level in January since 2014, worse than at the height of the coronavirus pandemic.

All of this adds up to make the economy look like it’s doing well, if not great, but ultimately it’s not working well for many people. Despite the dizzying swings in policy, from reintroducing tariffs to Supreme Court reversals, from tax cuts to forcing the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates amid inflation concerns, ordinary Americans trying to balance their economic lives may feel left out of the conversation.

Is the economy growing?

“There’s growth, but it’s slow growth,” said Don Rismiller, partner and chief economist at Strategas.

“I don’t think it’s understood by policymakers that AI, nursing homes and Uber are not going to create a very robust economy,” Rissmiller told USA TODAY. “Going forward, I think we need to look at the policies that are put in place to increase growth.”

Rissmiller called economic growth “adequate” in 2025, the first year of President Trump’s second term, and said he felt relatively optimistic about the outlook as some of last year’s policy shocks recede and tax cuts should stimulate growth.

Echoing some of these views, Goldman Sachs analysts wrote in a Feb. 16 note that “January’s jobs report provided further evidence that the labor market is taking early steps toward the stabilization we and the Fed expect this year. However, other recent labor market data has been weak, and the evidence for stabilization remains preliminary.”

Goldman analysts concluded: “We view risks to our labor market forecast as continuing to be tilted toward a negative outcome, and we view this to be a key risk in 2026.”

Neither they nor Rissmiller expect the Supreme Court’s Feb. 20 decision to cancel some of President Trump’s tariffs to have a major impact. Additionally, President Trump has already announced new 15% tariffs worldwide.

“The policy changes are consistent with our expectations, and our estimates of the impact of tariffs on inflation and growth remain largely unchanged as a result,” Goldman’s team wrote shortly after the announcement.

“K” shaped economy

Other observers are even less optimistic. Diane Swonk, chief economist at KPMG, has written frequently in recent months about the widening gap between the haves and have-nots in the U.S. economy, and remains convinced that inequality “corrodes rather than fuels” growth.

Swonk pointed out that the AI ​​revolution, which is generating much of the economic growth, is not creating many jobs. He also said that while luxury consumers have been able to sustain spending across the economy, that may not be sustainable.

“Historically, we have seen that periods of extreme inequality do not produce good economic or social outcomes,” she says.

For Swonk, consumer confidence measurements are more than just a measure of whether people like the economy. These are signs that people are losing trust in the government.

“There’s a sense of betrayal,” she said. “Certainly, when you talk to people, it’s very difficult how they try to make ends meet every day. That’s part of the reason why we’re seeing so much vitriol out there.”

Other economists take a more realistic view. Inflationary shocks over the past few years have driven prices up so much that Americans think it’s “ridiculous” to see something that has nearly doubled in price in a few years, Rissmiller said.

It may take a long time for those prices to feel “right” and the economy no longer feels “bad,” but ultimately most consumers will continue to buy sandwiches, which will keep the economy booming, he said.

“For all the shock we went through, there was some offset,” he said.

Amputation took place after the collision

Lindsey Vonn has revealed that she may have lost her leg after falling downhill at the Milan-Cortina Olympics.

In an Instagram post on Monday, February 23, Vonn detailed the injury, which is far more extensive than originally known. In addition to a complex tibial fracture in his left leg, Vonn said he also had a tibial plateau fracture and a fibular head fracture. His right ankle was also fractured.

Vonn also has compartment syndrome, which she said poses her biggest threat.

“Compartment syndrome is a condition where there’s a major trauma to one part of the body and there’s so much blood that it gets clogged and basically crushes everything in the compartment. Muscles, nerves, tendons, everything dies. And Dr. Tom Hackett saved my leg. He saved my leg from amputation,” Dr. Bonn said.

Compartment syndrome occurs when excessive pressure builds up within the muscles due to bleeding and swelling. The pressure restricts blood flow and can lead to permanent damage if not treated quickly.

Vonn said her longtime orthopedic surgeon, Hackett, was in Cortina to watch her compete in her fifth Olympics. When she was hospitalized in Italy, he performed a fasciotomy to save her leg.

“He cut it open (and) let it breathe, and he saved me,” she said.

Bon also announced that he had been discharged from the hospital.

She was hospitalized in Italy for just over a week before being transferred to a hospital in Colorado. She has undergone five surgeries since the Feb. 8 accident, including one last week after returning to the United States that lasted more than six hours.

Vonn said he is focused on rehabilitation and hopes to be back on crutches within the next few weeks. She said she will likely be on crutches for about two months, but it will take longer to fully heal.

“It will take about a year for all the bones to heal. Then we will decide whether to remove all the metal and then go back for surgery and ultimately repair the anterior cruciate ligament,” Bonn said.

Bong said all the surgeries caused extreme pain and required blood transfusions. She said Team USA’s performance at the 2026 Winter Olympics brought joy during this difficult time.

“It was really tough…I never wanted the Olympics to end this way,” Vonn said. “But it was really inspiring to watch my teammates. They were all really great, and it was really encouraging to see Team USA dominate.”

“I’ll always fight. I’ll keep going. I have no regrets. And I appreciate all the love and support. It’s been amazing.”

Vonn has had her right knee partially replaced and is also skiing. She was dominating the sport even before her accident, finishing on the podium in all five downhill races this season and winning two of them.

Despite her recent injury, Vonn was determined to compete in her fifth and final Olympics. She said her knee feels stable and strong and has been doing intensive rehabilitation, pool training, weightlifting and plyometrics over the last week. She skied both training runs and had the third fastest time on the second run before it was canceled due to fog and snow.

Ohio Supreme Court reaffirms text-first approach with ruling confirming Marsy’s Law includes police officers

The Ohio Supreme Court ruled late last year that the officer who was shot was a victim under the state constitution’s Marsy’s Law Amendment, which provides certain protections to crime victims and their families. The classification allows the city to redact police officers’ names and other identifying information from public records requested by newspapers.

Marsy’s Law is a legal framework adopted across the United States to codify the rights of crime victims. The proposed amendment is named after 21-year-old California college student Marthalee “Marcy” Nicholas, who was murdered by her ex-boyfriend in 1983. After her funeral, Murthy’s family had an unexpected encounter with the accused, who had been released on bail without their knowledge. The experience inspired her brother to launch a national campaign to protect crime victims. This framework elevates victims’ rights to constitutional status and mandates timely notification, respectful treatment, and meaningful participation throughout the criminal process. In Ohio, voters in 2017 overwhelmingly approved Marsy’s Law, amending the state constitution and creating the Ohio Crime Victims Bill of Rights.

In responding to public records requests, the city redacted the officers’ names, faces and voices to identify information protected under victims’ privacy rights established by Ohio’s version of Marsy’s Law. Gatehouse filed its own lawsuit in the Ohio Supreme Court seeking an order for the police department to release unredacted records about the shooting. In response, the city argued that the text of Marsy’s Law classifies victims as either the “person” against whom the crime was committed, or the person “directly and proximately harmed” by the crime.

The media outlet acknowledged that the plain language of the amendment appears to include police officers, but urged the court to avoid a purely literal interpretation of Marsy’s Law. In enacting the amendment, voters likely understood that it applied to private individuals who are victims of crime, not armed government officials, the outlet argued. Furthermore, it said that interpreting Marsy’s Law to protect the identity of police officers is inconsistent with the constitutional guarantees of inalienable rights of speech, press, petitions, assemblies, and open courts, which collectively create a right of public access to that information.

In determining whether public officials acting in their official capacity could invoke the proposed amendments’ victim privacy protections, the majority of courts concluded that the ordinary meaning of the word “person” is positive. The majority decided there was no ambiguity, so it declined to consider extratextual evidence cited by Gatehouse, such as the understanding of the voters who passed the amendment.

The court then addressed Gatehouse’s argument that the state constitution provides a separate right of access to public records that prevents the concealment of information about officers involved in use-of-force incidents. The majority said that insofar as the court recognized a constitutional right to public records, it did so based on the terms of a particular provision, not an “amorphous combination” of provisions. Even assuming that the Ohio Constitution contains a broad implied right of access to public records, the majority continued, media companies have not established that general structural principles can trump specific voter-enacted mandates such as Marsy’s Law.

By basing its analysis on general public meaning, the court rejected context-based limitations on law enforcement officers. Even if those limits may be consistent with voter expectations and long-standing norms of public accountability.

Free speech advocates have warned that expansive interpretations of victim rights provisions could limit transparency in use-of-force cases. If police officers can invoke victimization and suppress public records, journalists may be unable to report on police misconduct. Worse, critics say, the chilling effect could extend more broadly to protests and speech. Ohio’s decision places it among the first jurisdictions to give broad effects to constitutional provisions without creating a categorical exception for law enforcement officers.

The ruling contrasts with a 2023 Florida Supreme Court ruling that said the state’s Marsy Act privacy protections do not apply to the names of officers involved in fatal shootings. The court emphasized that the amendment protects only “information or records that can be used to locate or harass” crime victims, which is more narrowly worded than broader categories of identifying information. Information that merely narrows the scope of potential targets, such as the name of an officer, would not meet the proposed amendment’s withholding standard without further information.

Marsy’s Law has been the subject of lawsuits in other states, raising a number of questions. For example, the South Dakota Supreme Court held that a victim’s right to privacy is not absolute and that a defendant’s request for information about the victim to assist in his defense must be balanced against the defendant’s right to due process. And the Wisconsin Supreme Court rejected a challenge to invalidate a similar amendment, citing flaws in voting procedures.

Television network C-SPAN has put rumors to rest after a suspicious phone call that resembled that of President Donald Trump sparked a storm of speculation.

“Since so many people are talking about the caller to C-SPAN on Friday who identified himself as ‘John Barron,’ we would like to put this matter behind us. It was not the President,” C-SPAN said in a social media post on Sunday, February 22nd. He went on to say that the call came from a central Virginia number while the president was meeting with governors at the White House.

“Tune into C-SPAN to see if the actual president appears in Tuesday night’s State of the Union address,” he concluded.

The caller was using a pseudonym previously used by President Trump.

Jokes and theories flooded the Internet over the weekend after a man identified as a Virginia Republican called out to the network on Friday, February 20, commenting on the Supreme Court’s decision to cancel President Trump’s tariffs.

His speech pattern sounded so distinctly presidential that people began to suspect it was himself, or at least someone else making an impression.

“This is the worst decision of my life,” the man told host Greta Browner. “This is a terrible decision.”

“And then there’s Hakeem Jeffries, he’s a dope, and there’s Chuck Schumer who can’t make a cheeseburger,” he continued. “Of course these people are happy. Of course these people are happy. But true Americans will not be happy.”

A 2016 report in the Washington Post spurred speculation. It was revealed that Trump had previously used the name “John Barron” as a pseudonym, often redirecting questions to the fictitious Mr. Barron as his “spokesperson.”

“Barron (also spelled ‘Baron’ in some reports) appears to have been President Trump’s go-to alias when he was under intense scrutiny, needed a tough frontman, or wanted to get his message across without using his name,” the Post reported.

Trump used the name throughout the 1980s, but only used it in 1990 after appearing in court in a lawsuit and testifying under oath, “I think I used that name from time to time.”

Rumors surrounding C-SPAN’s “Trump” remarks

While some commenters expressed skepticism in response to C-SPAN’s post about the phone, many also joked about the situation.

“Trump has a burner VA phone in the White House bathroom,” one commentator said, referring to the popular murder mystery game “Clue.”

“Yes, it was him…no matter how much you told us to trust you, brother, it wasn’t him…she said the evidence that it wasn’t him was provided by him and the White House…and that evidence was, ‘No, dude, it wasn’t me,'” another claimed. “Mr. Trump was not in the public meeting when the call to C-Span came in,” another person agreed.

Some people were not so convinced by this call.

One commenter said: “Why would anyone think it was Trump? It’s clearly a prank.” “Yes, obviously. But as we’ve seen in the past, he’s not above doing it. That’s why it’s funny,” said another.

“Let’s make CSPAN prank calls great again (MCPCGA caucus),” one social media user joked.

Supreme Court to consider climate change lawsuit against Exxon and Sunko

Oil and gas companies argue that federal law prevents local governments from trying to recover damages from climate change damage.

WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court will take up local efforts to pursue major oil and gas companies such as ExxonMobil and Sunko for damages caused by climate change, an issue that has been debated in state courts across the country for years.

The court said on February 23 that it would consider whether it has jurisdiction to hear the dispute and, if so, whether federal law prohibits such suits, including one brought by officials in Boulder, Colorado.

In the lawsuit, which began in 2018, the city and surrounding states argue that the companies violated state law by misleading the public about the environmental impacts of fossil fuels and that they need help covering the costs to communities caused by climate change.

Both companies deny the allegations and argue that local governments cannot use state law to address global environmental problems.

“Boulder, Colorado cannot set energy policy for the entire country,” lawyers for the companies wrote in their appeal.

But Boulder’s lawyers said the Constitution does not prevent state and local governments from “addressing in-state harm caused by out-of-state conduct, whether it be negligent car design or the sale of asbestos.”

A number of lawsuits filed across the country against big energy companies are modeled after successful challenges against tobacco and opioid companies and rely on consumer protection laws and public nuisance claims.

The industry is trying to block them from going to trial, a move supported by the Trump administration.

The Justice Department told the Supreme Court that Boulder’s lawsuit is barred by both the Constitution and the Clean Air Act, the federal law regulating air pollution.

The Colorado Supreme Court’s 5-2 decision to allow the city to proceed with its lawsuit was “clearly wrong on an issue of great national importance,” the Justice Department wrote in urging the high court to intervene.

This differs from the Biden administration’s position. In a similar case in Hawaii, the Justice Department said in 2024 that the Supreme Court should not get involved until state courts have fully litigated the issue.

The high court rejected the fossil fuel industry’s appeal of the Hawaii case in 2025 and previously declined to intervene in the Colorado dispute.

The case, Suncor Energy v. Boulder County Board of County Commissioners, is scheduled to be argued in the fall.

To celebrate the new sparkling waters, Bubbly is hosting a Galactic Mission giveaway that includes an all-expenses-paid trip to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Merritt, Florida.

Guthrie Update – Backpack Found Searching for Savannah’s Mother Nancy

TUCSON, Ariz. — The search for “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie’s missing 84-year-old mother entered its 22nd day as volunteer searchers searched for clues.

Volunteers gathered in the parking lot of a Hobby Lobby in Tucson, Arizona, in the early morning hours of February 22nd, then began an unofficial search not far from Guthrie’s home. The group recovered the backpack and turned it over to deputies.

Department of Security spokeswoman Angelica Carrillo said authorities did not have an update on the investigation as of Monday morning.

Later, outside Guthrie’s home, Tucson resident Lupita Tero poked at the dirt with a sharp metal rod soldered to the handle. After wiggling the rod in the mud, Tello pulled it out and sniffed the sharp metal tip.

“If I smell something rotten, that’s where I start,” Tello said, showing reporters and crime streamers the main tools he uses to search for missing people in Mexico.

This will be the first time her group, Madres Buscadoras de Sonora, will conduct a search operation in the United States. The group is a Mexican nonprofit organization whose purpose is to search for missing and missing persons in the state of Sonora. Some of the groups joined to search for their missing sons, others to search for their missing brothers.

Tello said her group was recently informed about the Nancy Guthrie case by a journalist friend of Guthrie’s daughter, Savannah, who asked them to put up fliers and search for her.

Tello said the Pima County Sheriff’s Department told her the group needed permission from the homeowner to search private property, but formal permission was not required.

Carrillo said they are inquiring if volunteer search groups like Terror are in the area. Carrillo said they were asked to provide investigators with the space they need to do their work and to contact the department to participate in volunteer opportunities.

Madres Buscadras de Sonora is planning an official search later this week, Tello said.

In the afternoon sun, a handful of out-of-town passersby meandered past Mr. Guthrie’s one-story brick home in the Catalina foothills. Some people traveled from as far as Phoenix to visit the home of the missing woman who captured the world’s attention.

The volunteer search effort began about a week after Savannah Guthrie posted on social media on February 15th, urging anyone who knew her mother’s whereabouts: “It’s never too late to do the right thing.”

Investigators still searching for evidence in Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said in an interview aired on February 21 that the DNA found on Guthrie’s property was mixed, meaning it came from multiple people, making it difficult to check it in national databases.

The FBI is also analyzing DNA found on a glove found about three miles from Guthrie’s home, but the results have not been released.

Guthrie has been missing since January 31st. Investigators are working to identify the masked man seen on doorbell video the night Guthrie disappeared, and have not ruled out the possibility that more than one person is involved.

The information was passed on to the Sheriff’s Office and the FBI. Authorities are asking people to only submit practical tips, not wishes or similar comments.

Nanos said in an interview with NBC that no suspects have yet been named and that the complex DNA evidence is still being analyzed in the lab.

A key development in the Guthrie case occurred on February 10, when investigators recovered footage of a masked person captured on a doorbell camera the night Guthrie went missing. Authorities were still searching for the person seen wearing gloves in the video.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Office said investigators are close to identifying the clothing the masked man was wearing, including pants, shoes, a shirt and a jacket.

Investigators continued to examine surveillance footage related to key evidence, including a backpack that may have been purchased from Walmart.

The Sheriff’s Office said it is working with the retailer to identify the purchaser. Legal experts say stores routinely share transaction records and video footage with law enforcement during active investigations.

Carrillo said hundreds of law enforcement personnel continue to be assigned to the case, and staffing levels will change based on investigative leads. The investigation will continue until Guthrie is found or all leads are exhausted, she said.

Sheriff does not plan on media availability

Carrillo said no press conference is scheduled and the sheriff has no media appearances scheduled for the week of Feb. 23.

The sheriff’s last press conference was February 5th.
