Hilary Duff talks Lizzie McGuire, child stardom and new album

0

On the podcast “Call Her Daddy,” Hilary Duff talks about surviving childhood stardom, early 2000s culture, and why she believes she “weren’t crazy.”

play

Hilary Duff is setting a record for growing up in the spotlight.

“People will look at me and think, ‘Oh, maybe she had it easy,'” Duff said on the Feb. 25 episode of the podcast “Call Her Daddy.” “It hasn’t been easy, but I’m feeling okay.”

“I’m not crazy,” Duff added.

Now, the 38-year-old is reviving his career. Her first album in over 10 years, “Luck…or Something,” was released on February 20th. The 2000s pop star is wrapping up her stay in Las Vegas and is scheduled to begin a tour in support of her new album this summer, marking her first world tour in nearly 20 years, followed by an international tour that will continue through 2027.

Her musical comeback is certainly attracting attention. But so is the way she’s getting candid about her upbringing and the perspective she’s gained after taking a break from the childhood spotlight.

“It’s only when you give yourself a little bit of space that you can zoom in and be like, ‘Oh, something weird happened,'” Duff explained to Alex Cooper, host of the Call Her Daddy podcast. “At this age, it took me a while to actually take credit for how I got through it.”

Unique conflicts faced by child stars

There’s no denying that child stars face unique challenges when they reach the age where they’re in the public eye.

Donna Rockwell, a clinical psychologist specializing in celebrity mental health and CEO of the wellness community Already Famous, previously told USA TODAY that early fame can have a significant impact on mental health.

“If you haven’t had the opportunity to experience a real childhood, it’s very difficult to grow up into a grounded, mature adult,” Rockwell said, adding, “Child stars often miss these important steps, so they focus on external recognition rather than internal self-worth, which can lead to mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, or a state of constant longing.”

Duff shot to fame at the age of 13 as the star of the Disney film Lizzie McGuire, which aired from 2001 to 2004, and continued her remarkable acting career with roles in Younger and How I Met Your Father. Her 2003 album Metamorphosis also debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, propelling her to multi-platform stardom.

Recalling the early moments when she realized she was famous, Call Her Daddy recalled going to a fashion mall with friends and getting “rubbed up by the kids” and being led to a supplies closet by staff.

“I’m in the broom aisle at the mall. Can you pick me up?” she recalled telling her mother over the phone, laughing.

Duff’s rise to fame coincided with the peak of tabloid culture in the early 2000s, which hounded stars like Britney Spears. In the episode, Cooper noted that Duff has a reputation for being “one of the few child stars who escaped Hollywood’s big pitfalls.” Her colleagues Lindsay Lohan and Amanda Bynes have battled mental health in more public ways.

Not only does this constant coverage potentially worsen the celebrities’ own mental health, but it also perpetuates the stigma in others that people with mental health issues are dangerous, weak-minded, lazy, attention-seekers, and therefore deserving of being laughed at.

“People are so bold about making fun of celebrities because they feel so removed from their lives that they see them as almost non-human, fictional characters,” board-certified psychiatrist Kari Hobson previously told USA TODAY. “But…if people see celebrities being ridiculed and demonized in the media, why would anyone think it’s safe to open up and ask for help?”

The Disney alum said in the episode that getting through that period of her life was “tough” and credited her upbringing for keeping her grounded. It’s something she unravels further in therapy.

To her millennial fans, Duff will always be synonymous with the awkwardly lovable and big-hearted Lizzie McGuire. But on her next tour, we’ll have a chance to see Duff achieve stardom in her own way.

“I’m having so much fun, I couldn’t have asked for a better welcome,” Duff said. “Everything felt very celebratory.”

This may be the easiest way to get more Social Security

0

One simple action can lead to a bigger check.

Social Security can end up paying you a significant amount of money in retirement. And if you don’t have much savings, these monthly benefits can make up a large portion of your retirement income. That’s why it’s important to do everything you can to get more Social Security benefits.

The monthly benefits you are entitled to after retirement are determined by two things:

  • Your personal wage history.
  • Your application age.

However, mistakes can occur when considering a person’s earnings history. Income may be underreported to the Social Security Administration (SSA) or not reported at all.

That’s why it’s so important to check your earnings records to make sure they’re accurate. To do this, create an account at SSA.gov and review your income statement annually. Compare the income amounts listed to your personal records to ensure the data matches.

If you encounter an error that is detrimental to you, please contact SSA. They will tell you what steps to take to prove that you have unreported or underreported income.

It’s especially a good idea to check your Social Security earnings records if you’ve changed jobs frequently or done a lot of contract work during your career. Similarly, if you change your name mid-career, you’ll need to make sure all wages are credited.

Even if you have enough savings for retirement and don’t expect to rely too much on Social Security, there’s no reason not to receive the full benefit you’re entitled to. Reviewing your earnings record may be the easiest way to avoid a reduction in your monthly check.

What lawmakers considered in the Georgia General Assembly this session

0

play

The Georgia State Legislature is more than a month removed from its 40-day stay under the Gold Dome, and a busy election year may have taken the focus away from day-to-day operations inside the Capitol.

But lawmakers are plodding through lengthy proceedings, focusing on issues ranging from the state budget to cell phones in schools.

Let’s take a look at some of the issues lawmakers have tackled this year.

Budget includes tax rebates, teacher bonuses

HB973, which outlines the fiscal budget, is scheduled to arrive on Governor Brian Kemp’s desk this week after being voted on by both the House and Senate.

“The FY26 amended budget will provide $2 billion in income and property tax relief, endow the state with first-of-its-kind need-based scholarships, make historic investments in transportation, and more,” Kemp said in a post on Wednesday.

In his State of the State address, the governor announced plans to use state surpluses for tax refunds, including $250 for single filers and $500 for joint filers.

The budget also added $850 million, or about $500 per homeowner, to the Homeowner Relief Grant Program.

Teacher bonuses were reduced to $1,275 but still passed, as was $145 million in scholarship funding for DREAMS, a needs-based program.

Another bill, HB 1001, passed by the House and considered in the Senate, would lower Georgia’s flat income tax rate to 4.99%.

Georgia school funding and bans

Two education bills, HB 1193 and HB 1009, passed in the House.

HB 1193 would establish literacy coaches in schools and supplement the program with additional coaching. This bill focuses on K-12 school programs. Coaches will use a research-based approach to literacy previously adopted by the state.

HB 1009 targets high schools and prohibits the use of personal electronic devices, including cell phones, in schools or school-sponsored events for students in grades 9 through 12. The bill expands on previously passed legislation banning the use of cell phones in kindergarten through eighth grade classrooms.

Gun safety and puberty blockers

The first bill passed by Congress was SB 204, which challenged municipalities and towns that enacted their own ordinances regarding gun storage. These ordinances, like Savannah’s ordinance, could result in fines and jail time for legal gun owners who fail to safely store firearms in unlocked vehicles.

HB 54 is a home health care bill, but the amendment added restrictions on gender-affirming care, including puberty blockers, for minors. Both the House and Senate agreed to the amendment.

The bill states that state funds for “medical benefit coverage” cannot include gender-affirming care, and the ordinance prohibits “any individual, entity, or local government from purchasing separate insurance coverage for gender-affirming care.”

There are still several weeks left in Congress, which is scheduled to adjourn in early April.

Vance and Newsom lead in 2028, Trump’s disapproval rate soars in new poll

0

Trump’s disapproval rating among Hispanic voters has increased by 13 percentage points in the past month, according to a new Emerson College poll.

play

  • According to the latest Emerson College poll, President Trump’s disapproval rating has risen to 55%.
  • Polls show that support for the president among Hispanic voters has declined significantly.
  • The cost of living, healthcare costs, and inflation are the biggest issues for voters ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
  • California Governor Gavin Newsom and Vice President J.D. Vance are each the early frontrunners for the 2028 presidential primary.

According to the latest Emerson College poll released on February 25th, President Donald Trump’s approval rating continues to decline.

The Emerson poll of 1,000 likely voters found that more than half of Americans surveyed, or 55%, disapproved of the president’s job, an increase of 4 points from January. The poll was conducted between February 21 and February 22, days before Trump’s record-length State of the Union address on February 24.

Meanwhile, 43% of Americans support Trump, according to the Emerson Poll, the same percentage recorded in the university’s January poll. During his State of the Union address, Trump boasted that he inherited a “nation in crisis.” He praised his economic performance, crediting it with lowering the prices of essential goods for Americans such as gasoline and eggs.

“This is America’s golden age,” President Trump said. “We have achieved a transformation unlike anything anyone has seen before. This is a change of time.”

The Emerson poll comes with less than a week until voters cast their ballots in the Texas, Arkansas and North Carolina primaries on March 3. In the general congressional vote, the Emerson poll showed the Democratic candidate defeating the Republican candidate by an 8-point margin, 50% to 42%. This number is two points higher than Emerson’s January survey.

Emerson’s poll this month is consistent with a series of other polls showing President Trump’s approval ratings are plummeting, including recent polls by The Washington Post ABC News, The New York Times and Pew Research Center.

According to these polls, President Trump’s approval rating is between 37% and 43%.

And in the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll on February 24, 6 in 10 Americans, including a sizable portion of Republicans, said they thought the 79-year-old President Trump had become less stable as he aged.

Overall, 61% of poll respondents described President Trump as “more unstable with age,” according to the six-day poll that ended Feb. 23. Meanwhile, about 89% of Democrats, 30% of Republicans, and 64% of independents also rate President Trump that way.

Trump support among Hispanics plummets

The Emerson Poll also shows that more than half of Hispanics surveyed disapprove of the president’s job. Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, said 58% of Hispanics surveyed disapproved of President Trump, while 37% supported him.

This is a big change from last month, when Mr. Emerson reported a split approval rating of 43% and 45% disapproval. President Trump’s disapproval rating jumped 13% among Hispanics from January to February.

“These numbers reflect the broader downward trends observed previously among Hispanic voters,” Kimball said in the release.

Newsom emerges as top Democratic presidential candidate in Emerson poll

California Governor Gavin Newsom is the early favorite to win the 2028 Democratic presidential primary with 20% of the vote, according to Emerson Poll.

Former Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg followed with 16%, followed by former Vice President Kamala Harris in third place with 13%. New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez had a 9% approval rating, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro 7% and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear 5%.

Kimball noted that polls show about 24% are undecided as candidates begin to take shape on their 2028 base.

He said Ocasio-Cortez has the most support among voters under 30 at 20%, and among women, Buttigieg leads with 20%, tied with 21% among graduate students.

Kimball added that Newsom leads among voters 50 and older (23%), and black voters support Harris (36%).

Vice President Vance becomes the top early Republican presidential candidate

On the Republican side, Vice President J.D. Vance leads the 2028 Republican presidential primary candidates with 52%, according to the Emerson Poll.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio was second with 20%, followed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in third with 6% and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. with 4%. Former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley has 3%. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz had 1%.

According to the poll, about 11% are undecided.

“Republican voters strongly support Mr. Vance,” Kimball said.

Kimball added that independent voters who plan to vote in the 2028 Republican primary also support Vance, but by a narrow margin of 33% to 23%.

According to the poll, independent voters overall lean toward Democratic candidates 50% to 37%.

Poll: Voters say cost of living will be the biggest topic in the 2026 midterm elections

With the 2026 midterm elections just over eight months away, a majority of prospective voters say the cost of living is their top issue, according to the Emerson Poll.

In the poll, voters were asked how important a range of issues were to them on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest. According to the poll, cost of living ranked highest on average at 8.2, followed by health care at 7.8, inflation at 7.6, deportation policy at 7.1, access to health care at 6.9, and border security at 6.3.

According to the poll, by political party, Democrats rate health care spending higher than average at 8.6, and border security at 4.9, the lowest.

According to the poll, Republicans rate border security as the most important issue at 8.3 and deportation policy at 8.2, far ahead of Democrats (4.9 and 6.9) and independent voters (5.9 and 6.5).

Independents were also more concerned about the cost of living, with an average rating of 8.2.

As the threat of war looms, what does the US want from Iran?

0

play

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump says he is seeking a way out of a potential conflict with Iran, but he has yet to hear “secret words” from adversaries with whom the United States is engaged in tense nuclear negotiations.

In his State of the Union address on February 24, President Trump said he wanted Iran to declare that it would “never have nuclear weapons.” Even after a U.S. operation last summer caused significant damage and destruction to Iran’s nuclear facilities, President Trump said the country was pursuing “evil ambitions.”

US fighter jets and aircraft carriers have been dispatched to the region as President Trump threatens to attack. On February 19, he warned that “really bad things are going to happen” if Iran does not reach a deal within 10 to 15 days to permanently halt its nuclear program.

“It would be great if they really negotiated in good faith and in good faith and in good faith, but the negotiations are not there. So far…the negotiations are not there,” President Trump told reporters on February 27, as he was leaving the White House for a trip to Texas.

The president said he was not satisfied with Iran’s way of negotiating, but said he had not made a final decision on whether to carry out a military strike, which it is unclear whether it would lead to the overthrow of Iran’s supreme leader, and U.S. allies in the region fear it could lead to a broader war.

So the question arises: What does the US want from Iran?

“This is a war of choices,” said Aaron David Miller, a former U.S. negotiator and adviser to the Republican and Democratic secretaries of state. “The president has not indicated a clear goal.”

there are no nuclear weapons

Diplomatic talks are set to resume next week between the US and Iran amid growing signs of military conflict between the two countries, which analysts warn could spread and engulf the Middle East.

The US State Department announced on February 27 that Secretary of State Marco Rubio will visit Israel early next week to discuss Iran and other regional issues.

Negotiators from both countries are also expected to meet again next week after a third round of indirect negotiations ended on February 26 without a deal that would avert a potential U.S. attack. Oman, the mediator, said progress had been made, but by the end of the week there were no signs that the situation would be resolved any time soon.

Mona Yakubian, director of the Middle East program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said: “It’s clear that the administration is pursuing both options, withholding military force, of course, and may indeed be pursuing an imminent attack, but it’s also showing a desire to find a diplomatic solution if possible.”

Iran’s nuclear program is at the center of the debate. President Trump said Iran should never be allowed to develop nuclear weapons. The Iranian government insists instead that it is enriching uranium for civilian purposes.

The United States and Israel have for decades accused Iran of secretly trying to develop nuclear weapons, and last June they bombed three Iranian nuclear facilities. President Trump said at the time that the attack destroyed Iran’s main nuclear enrichment facility, but a subsequent U.S. assessment found that only one of the three facilities had been destroyed.

US wants permanent agreement

In the current negotiations, the US is demanding that Iran halt its uranium enrichment program. This demand has become a major point of contention, with Iran insisting it has the right to enrich uranium on its own soil for non-weapons uses such as energy production.

President Trump has argued that Iran should not be allowed to enrich uranium at all.

“I’m saying we’re not going to enrich,” he said during a stop at a Texas refinery on February 27. “Instead of 20% or 30%, they always want 20%, 30%. They want it for civil purposes. I think that’s disrespectful.”

Miller said he believes President Trump is asking Iran to agree to inspections by an independent agency such as the International Atomic Energy Agency, as well as constraints that would make it impossible for the Iranians to enrich enough uranium in a transparent manner to produce enough fissile material to make a nuclear weapon.

But he said: “Even though he seems committed to next week’s negotiations, including technical talks with the IAEA, he seems to think in his own mind that he needs to send a message to the IAEA, that he needs to make sure the world understands that he is not joking and is serious.”

The Wall Street Journal reported that the United States is demanding that Iran destroy its three main nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan and hand over all remaining enriched uranium to the United States. Iranian officials oppose these demands.

The United States also insists that the nuclear deal between the two countries remain permanent, with no future termination date or sunset clause. The Trump administration insists the deal will be more ironclad than the one negotiated a decade ago under then-President Barack Obama and from which Trump withdrew during his first term.

The deal required Iran to limit its nuclear program, including by reducing enrichment levels and cutting back on centrifuges, and was scheduled to take effect in 2016 and expire 10 years after its adoption.

ballistic missile

The United States has also called on Iran to limit its ballistic missile program. President Trump warned in his State of the Union address on February 24 that Iran would soon be able to build missiles capable of attacking the United States.

According to Reuters, experts have cast doubt on this argument and say it is not supported by U.S. intelligence reports.

Three sources familiar with the assessment told the news agency that Trump’s claims appear to be exaggerated and cast doubt on some of his claims about a possible attack on Iran.

“It’s not that easy to build ballistic missiles that can reach the United States, even though they have done so much harm to American programs,” said Daniel Kurtzer, who served as U.S. ambassador to Israel during the George W. Bush administration. He also served as U.S. ambassador to Egypt under former President Bill Clinton.

Iran has the largest ballistic missile force in the Middle East, with missiles capable of hitting Israel, U.S. military bases in the region and parts of Europe. It is also developing a so-called space launch vehicle to put satellites into orbit, which experts say could be converted into an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead.

Ending support for proxy groups

The Trump administration said it is asking Iran to end its support for proxy regional groups such as Hezbollah, Hamas and the Houthis and to commit not to use violence against protesters.

Iran is building a network of groups that it uses to exert influence across the Middle East. These groups operate with some degree of autonomy, but Iran provides them with financial support, weapons such as drones and missiles, training and intelligence.

These groups have essentially become Iran’s “shadow army,” carrying out attacks on Israel, U.S. forces operating in the Middle East, and commercial shipping in the Red Sea. The United States has designated many of them as terrorist organizations.

But since last summer’s attack on Israel, former Ambassador Kurzer said proxy activity has subsided.

“It would be nice to get some kind of declaration or commitment,” he said. “But in practical terms, proxies are no longer that important.”

Both U.S. hockey teams provide my children with role models to look up to.

0

As a mother of boys, I am proud of the men’s hockey team. They are great athletes and role models. As a mother of girls, I am proud of the women’s hockey team. They teach our daughters that anything is possible.

play

We’ve seen a lot of controversy surrounding the U.S. team at the Italian Winter Olympics.

I don’t understand that and I think as Americans we should reject it.

I don’t know about you, but I am inspired by the extraordinary Olympians on Team USA. As a mother of two boys, I am proud of the men’s hockey team. They are great athletes and role models. As a mother of girls, I am proud of the women’s hockey team. They inspire my daughters and show them that anything is possible. As a woman who has given birth four times and misses her days as an athlete, I am amazed at the strength of these Olympic mothers (nine of them).

I think we can learn a lot from these Olympians about how to deal with our own wins, losses, setbacks, and successes, not just in sports, but in life.

The US hockey controversy is nonsense. Should I be angry about everything?

The U.S. men’s hockey team won the gold medal on February 22 with an overwhelming 2-1 victory over longtime rival Canada. It was their first gold medal since defeating the Soviet Union in 1980. It was historic. The team’s victory filled the locker room, where they received a phone call from President Donald Trump.

After congratulating the team and inviting them to Washington, D.C., President Trump joked that he would “probably be impeached” if he didn’t invite the women’s team.

Fueled by adrenaline, his teammates laughed and continued talking about their well-deserved celebration.

On February 24, the President announced most of the members of the men’s hockey team during his State of the Union address.

President Trump said the women’s team is expected to come to the White House at a later date, but that is not yet certain. Controversy arose: Did the women’s team disrespect the president because of his comments? Why did the men’s team laugh at Trump’s sexist jokes?

Everyone needs to calm down. First, U.S. women’s hockey star Kelly Panek reiterated that her team’s absence from the State of the Union was due to logistical issues, not President Trump’s joke. Second, Trump’s jokes were unnecessary, but as a woman, I didn’t find them offensive. Should I be angry about everything? I’m afraid not. Third, some people actually felt bad laughing when the men’s team came down from their incredible high.

Reporters asked goaltender Jeremy Swayman about the incident, and he said he and his teammates “should have reacted differently.” Afterwards, Swayman spoke passionately about the women’s team. “I know we are very excited about the women’s team. We have so much respect for the women’s team and being able to share the gold medal with them is something we will be forever grateful for.”

I’m happy for the men’s hockey team. They seem like good role models. I want my sons to strive for greatness, celebrate when they succeed, and have the courage to admit in hindsight that they should have done things differently.

Women achieved historic success at the Olympics. There’s plenty of Olympic inspiration.

I still find hope and inspiration in that manufactured controversy.

While I commend the men, it is important to note the historic success of the women in this game. i love this. As a mother who is an athlete or has a daughter who is an athlete, this touches me. Among them was figure skater Alisa Liu, who became the first American to win an Olympic gold medal in women’s single figure skating in 24 years. Mikaela Shiffrin and Breezy Johnson won gold in alpine skiing, bobsledder Elana Meyers Taylor became a legend, and Elizabeth Lemley dominated. Freestyle moguls, and of course the U.S. women’s hockey team. This should be a bigger story. That’s the story I tell my daughters.

Applause for female Olympic athletes does not undermine the success of male Olympic athletes, and vice versa. There is room in the world for all of us to pursue our dreams, achieve our goals, and succeed. These Olympics showed that even well-intentioned actions can become political, and that even the most extraordinary moments can be tainted by politics. But you don’t have to allow that in sports or in life. There’s a much bigger lesson here.

Most of us will never become Olympians. It is the privilege of only a select few. But far beyond ice rinks and ski slopes, there are lessons in every athletic activity.

  • It’s better to lose gracefully than win with pride.
  • Victory sometimes takes decades. Please taste it when you come.
  • Life’s challenges can cause teeth to break and bleed. Expect that, get up and keep going.

You may finally achieve your lifelong dream, only to be made into a joke by someone else. That doesn’t make winning any less valuable. In fact, it might make the game more appealing, and it doesn’t make the game any less inspired.

The FBI warns that “ATM jackpots” are on the rise. Here’s what you need to know:

0

play

The FBI is warning of an increase in cybercrime in which thieves remotely withdraw money from automated teller machines.

This practice, called “ATM jackpotting” by the FBI, occurs when thieves use malware to allow them to withdraw money from machines whenever they want.

The FBI on Thursday, Feb. 19, issued a warning to financial institutions to inform them about the recent increase in jackpot incidents, saying at least 1,900 “ATM jackpot” incidents have been reported over the past six years.

“Of the 1,900 ATM jackpot incidents reported since 2020, more than 700 occurred in 2025 alone, resulting in losses exceeding $20 million,” the FBI wrote in the warning.

Just last week, a federal grand jury in the District of Nebraska indicted six people for their alleged involvement in the “ATM Jackpot” scheme. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the defendants deployed the malware to “steal millions of dollars from ATMs in the United States.”

They were charged with conspiracy to commit bank fraud, conspiracy to commit bank robbery and computer fraud, bank fraud, bank robbery, and computer damage.

Here’s what the FBI said in its latest warning about “ATM jackpots” and what financial institutions should be aware of:

How does an “ATM jackpot” work?

The FBI said in the alert that actors are using malware such as the Ploutus family of malware to infect ATMs and withdraw cash from them. According to the FBI, the malware infects software that directs ATMs to perform physical operations.

If the ATM is functioning properly, the ATM application sends instructions for bank authentication through the software. According to the FBI, if criminals can send their own commands to the software, they can bypass bank approval and instruct ATMs to withdraw cash.

Essentially, the software allows criminals to withdraw cash from ATMs without a bank card, customer account, or bank authorization, the FBI said.

“It gives (thieves) direct control over the machine,” the FBI wrote in the notice, adding that the malware attacked the ATM itself, not customer accounts.

According to the FBI, thieves have discovered multiple ways to install malware on ATMs, including:

  • Remove the machine’s hard drive, connect it to a computer, copy the malware to the hard drive, put the hard drive back into the ATM, and restart the ATM.
  • Remove the ATM’s hard drive, replace it with an external hard drive or other external device that is preloaded with malware, and restart the ATM.

How do banks and credit unions know that their ATMs are infected?

The FBI said in its warning that, based on past ATM attacks investigated by the bureau, there are red flags that banks and credit unions can look for to discover infected machines.

Digital and physical signs of tampering include:

  • Unexpected executable files on your hard drive, such as Newage.exe, Color.exe, and WinMonitor.exe.
  • Associated files and scripts such as C.dat, Restaurar.bat, and Logcontrol.txt.
  • A new directory, such as C:\Users\SSAuto1\AppData\Local\P\.
  • Security log records showing USB insertion events and newly connected external devices.
  • Alerts about the ATM door being opened outside of scheduled maintenance, or alerts about removing the hard drive from the ATM.

What to do if you need to report an “ATM jackpot”

The FBI said anyone who needs to report suspicious or criminal activity can report the situation to their local FBI field office (www.fbi.gov/contact-us/field-offices) or the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (www.ic3.gov).

Those reporting jackpotting must provide the bank name, branch, location, and contact information, as well as the ATM make and model, vendor name and contact information, and available logs.

Federal authorities announce suspect in decades-long cold case of Morgan Jade Violi

0

play

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Authorities announced they have indicted two-time prison escapee Robert Scott Froberg on kidnapping charges in the 1996 kidnapping death of 7-year-old Morgan Jade Violi in Kentucky, solving a nearly 30-year cold case.

Kyle G. Bumgarner, the U.S. attorney for the Western District of Kentucky, announced on February 27 that Floberg had confessed to kidnapping and killing Morgan that summer, shortly after escaping from an Alabama prison and then a Pennsylvania prison. Bumgarner said he was arrested on suspicion of jailbreak in late 1996 and has been in custody ever since.

In a packed conference room at the Bowling Green Police Department, law enforcement, media and city officials from Kentucky and Tennessee watched as Morgan’s parents and other family members filed into the room. Family members sat in the first three rows of seats and listened intently to Bumgarner’s accusations.

When Morgan fought back, she screamed, Bumgarner said. Her mother gasped. Tears streamed down the faces of many family members as they wiped their cheeks with crumpled tissues.

Bumgarner called the news “one of the most significant announcements by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in at least a decade.”

“For years, the community has feared that Morgan’s abductor was living quietly among us. We feared that one of our children would be next. I hope that today’s announcement can provide some comfort to my home community,” Bumgarner said.

Bumgarner said if convicted, Froberg could spend the rest of his life in federal prison or face the death penalty.

On July 24, 1996, Morgan disappeared from the parking lot of the Bowling Green apartment complex where she lived while playing with another girl, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network. Bowling Green is a city approximately 105 miles outside of Nashville, Tennessee, with approximately 40,600 residents at the 1990 census and approximately 80,000 residents today.

Witnesses said the man driving an older maroon Chevrolet van grabbed the girl first, then grabbed Morgan, put her in the van and tried to speed away.

The FBI described the man as approximately 20 to 30 years old in 1996, with light brown hair, and of medium height and weight.

The FBI said the van used in the kidnapping was stolen from Dayton, Ohio. He was found two days later at a truck stop in Franklin, about 135 miles from Bowling Green, the FBI said.

It took three months before Morgan’s body was found. Her skeletal remains were discovered by a woman walking near her home in Whitehouse, Robertson County, the USA TODAY Network’s Nashville Tennessean reported. Witnesses told police that a van matching the one used in the kidnapping and found in Franklin was found in the area where Morgan’s body was found on July 25, 1996.

The search for Morgan’s killer remains unsolved for nearly 30 years, and the FBI in Louisville announced in 2022 that it would continue searching for clues. As recently as January 22, 2026, the Bowling Green Police Department was seeking new information. The FBI has offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect.

New DNA technology helped solve the case

Officials said fibers recovered from Morgan’s hair in 1996 held the key to solving the case. Bumgarner said the fibers matched the seat cushions of the stolen van, but advances in DNA analysis at the FBI have only recently allowed authorities to pinpoint the connection to Froeberg.

“Due to recent advances in forensic testing of DNA evidence, the FBI sent the hair recovered from the van back to the laboratory for testing. The FBI discovered that the DNA profile extracted from the hair was associated with Robert Scott Froberg,” he said.

Bumgarner said Floberg did not come to the FBI’s attention as a suspect in Morgan’s murder until the new analysis was conducted.

Morgan Jade Violi murder suspect escapes custody twice

In 1996, Froberg was in an Alabama prison, serving a 40-year sentence for robbery starting in 1989, records show. Bumgarner said he escaped from prison on April 3, 1996.

He traveled to Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania, where he was reported to have been seen “having contact with a 7-year-old boy” in a children’s treehouse on May 20th. Bumgarner said the boy ran home, told his parents and called police. He was arrested and taken to Northumberland County Jail.

On July 16, 1996, Froberg once again escaped from a Pennsylvania prison. The maroon van was reported stolen on July 23 in Dayton, Ohio, less than a half-mile from where Froberg’s parents lived. Bumgarner did not elaborate on how Floberg escaped from the Alabama and Pennsylvania prisons.

Froberg was finally arrested on August 21, 1996, and has been in custody ever since.

Earlier this week, investigators interviewed Mr. Froberg after linking him to Fiver and learned that he was on the run at the time of Mr. Morgan’s death. Froberg admitted to being in Bowling Green intending to buy drugs and also admitted to kidnapping Morgan and putting her in his van, Bumgarner said.

“Throughout it all, Morgan fought. She screamed, she fought back. Morgan was a warrior,” Bumgarner said.

Froberg admitted to putting his hand over Morgan’s mouth, “ultimately causing her death inside the van,” Bumgarner said. He also admitted to leaving her body in the woods.

The child’s death had a lasting impact on the community

Marika Brown, a retired major with the Bowling Green Police Department, was a young officer on patrol when Morgan was taken. The mother of two children, ages 2 and 4, was out taking an aerobics class when all police officers were called in. When she returned home, she noticed that her answering machine had calls to all the units.

She quickly got ready and came to work early, she told the Nashville Tennessean, part of the USA TODAY Network, after the Feb. 27 press conference.

Neither Brown nor the community knew how much of an impact this incident would have on Bowling Green for the next 30 years. Random kidnappings are rare. It scared people.

In the mid-90s, it was not uncommon for children to play unsupervised, especially during summer vacation. However, things changed when Morgan was taken. Brown said the church began to fill up, both with people looking to God for answers and a safe place for children to play.

“It’s one of those cases where you work in a career that just gets engraved and burned into your memory forever,” she said. “I think that’s always the biggest fear for anyone who’s ever had children or grandchildren, but to see it actually happen and it take so long is both reassuring and heartbreaking.”

Optima Tax Relief vs. Anthem Tax Services in 2026

0

Optima Tax Relief and Anthem Tax Services are two national companies that provide tax relief services. Although both companies offer similar services, their individual pricing and company details differ.

Tax relief providers act as intermediaries between taxpayers and the IRS, helping individuals and small businesses apply for things like the IRS Obligation Program (OIC) and Installment Agreements. This service is especially helpful after IRS notices extend to levies, liens, wage garnishments, or when taxpayers feel overwhelmed navigating the process on their own.

In this Optima Tax Relief vs. Anthem Tax Services tax relief company comparison, we’ll look at the key differences between the two. It may also make sense when hiring a tax relief company.

Optima Tax Relief vs. Anthem Tax Services

Overview of Optima tax relief

Optima Tax Relief was founded in 2011 and is headquartered in Santa Ana, California. We offer a wide range of tax relief services to individuals and small businesses who owe at least $10,000 in unpaid taxes.

The company offers free initial consultations to help taxpayers determine which tax relief programs they are eligible for. We also offer a taxpayer identity theft protection service called Optima Tax Shield for an additional fee.

Optima’s main tax relief services include:

  • Initial case evaluation
  • OIC application support
  • Tax debt resolution strategies
  • Declaration and declaration preparation
  • compliance
  • Negotiation/settlement support
  • Tax lien, bank collection, and wage garnishment support
  • Protection from identity theft

Rated 4.5 stars on Trustpilot and A-grade accredited by the Better Business Bureau, positive reviews for Optima Tax Relief often include words like professional, candid, and helpful. However, some negative reports highlight dissatisfaction with rates, confusion about the services provided, and slow communication.

The company does not disclose cost details for its tax resolution services, which is common in the industry. Pricing varies by case and uses a phase-based model depending on the complexity of the case. Investigation costs and separate resolution costs are expected to be incurred.

Optima Tax Relief may be a reasonable option for taxpayers facing IRS collections and with large tax obligations. Customers can choose to work with the company for a free consultation or available tax identity theft products.

Overview of Anthem Tax Services

Founded in 2010 and headquartered in Westlake Village, California, Anthem Tax Services provides tax resolution services to individuals and small businesses nationwide. Like Optima Tax Relief, the company focuses on working with customers who owe at least $10,000 in unpaid taxes.

In addition to tax resolution services and free initial consultations, Anthem Tax Services offers an informative blog to answer common tax relief questions, Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, unfiled return assistance, and corporate tax preparation.

Anthem Tax Services’ main products include:

  • OIC application support
  • installment agreement
  • Currently Not Collectable (CNC) Status
  • reduction of fines
  • Preparation for unfiled declaration
  • Corporate tax service
  • Tax lien, bank collection, and wage garnishment support

Rated 4.1 stars on Trustpilot and accredited by the BBB with an A+ rating, reviews of Anthem Tax Services often cite knowledgeable staff and clear communication. However, some negative reviews cite concerns about the amount of fees, delays in litigation, or unmet expectations.

Like Optima Tax Relief and others, Anthem Tax Services does not publish detailed pricing information. The company uses a flat fee structure based on the complexity of the case and the services required, third-party sources said.

Utilizing Anthem Tax Services can be a reasonable option for taxpayers who are dealing with difficult situations and owe large amounts of unpaid taxes or are facing business tax issues. Customers can choose this company with a flat fee structure or a limited 100% money-back guarantee.

Optima vs. Anthem: Key Differences

Both companies offer similar tax resolution services for people with large tax debts, but the main differences between them are in their pricing structures and slight differences in the services each offers.

How tax relief company pricing works

Tax relief company pricing varies depending on the complexity of your individual case.

Both Opitma Tax Relief and Anthem Tax Services offer free initial consultations and base fees based on the complexity of your case. Optima Tax Relief uses a tier-based structure, while Anthem Tax Services offers a flat fee structure.

After an initial consultation to determine the appropriate IRS program path forward, the investigation phase includes reviewing IRS transcripts, assessing filing compliance, gathering financial documentation, and evaluating eligibility for available relief options.

Tax relief companies cannot promise results and are bound by the same IRS rules as individuals and businesses. Although providers can represent, advise, and prepare returns for taxpayers, only the IRS has the authority to approve settlements or award relief.

When should you work with a tax saving company?

While how much tax credit you can claim plays an important role in deciding whether to work with a tax credit company, other factors may be more important.

It may be worth considering hiring a professional tax saving service if:

  • owe a significant balance
  • Subject to levy, lien, or garnishment
  • I need assistance with multiple years of unfiled returns.
  • I need help organizing my documents
  • Overwhelmed by IRS procedures

Alternatives to hiring a tax relief company

Hiring a tax relief company is always optional and not legally required. Providers primarily provide expertise, organization, documentation, and communication assistance, and do not have access to specialized programs that are not available to individuals.

Taxpayers have options other than tax relief specialists, such as hiring a local CPA or tax professional or working directly with the IRS. Taxpayers can find information about working with the IRS on the Taxpayer Advocate Service site and begin determining eligibility for the OIC option on the OIC Prequalification page.

conclusion

Optima Tax Relief and Anthem Tax Services both help taxpayers navigate IRS resolution programs, and their core services are similar. The main differences are in the pricing structure and secondary service features, such as Optima’s identity monitoring options and Anthem’s limited money-back guarantee.

Tax services can be costly, and no service provider can guarantee a specific outcome because the IRS has the final say. Compare costs and contract details before contracting with a provider or choosing alternatives, such as hiring a local professional or working directly with the IRS.

Optima vs. Anthem Frequently Asked Questions

Is Optima Tax Relief better than Anthem Tax Services?

Optima Tax Relief and Anthem Tax Services offer similar tax resolution services. Neither guarantees the outcome of a lawsuit. Optima Tax Relief has a slightly higher score on Trustpilot, and Anthem Tax Services is rated slightly higher on the BBB. Anthem offers a limited money-back guarantee, while Optima offers tax identity theft protection. Which one is best for you depends on your preferred pricing structure and available benefits other than tax relief.

How much does a tax relief company typically cost?

Many tax relief companies do not publish pricing details, and third-party sources list a wide range of average costs. Price estimates vary widely from $250 to over $10,000, depending on the complexity of the case and the services provided.

Can tax-exempt companies reduce their IRS liability?

In some cases, a tax relief company can help reduce your IRS tax liability. However, there are special IRS debt relief programs that individuals and businesses cannot access on their own. Additionally, the IRS has final approval or denial authority in all cases. Instead, tax relief providers offer experience navigating IRS procedures, preparing documents, and communicating with IRS agencies.

President Trump speaks of ‘friendly takeover’ of Cuba during pressure campaign

President Trump told reporters on February 27, “It is very likely that we will end up with a friendly takeover of Cuba.”

play

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump said the United States could stage a “friendly takeover of Cuba” as fuel shortages weigh on the authoritarian government in Havana following a U.S. military raid that captured nearby Venezuela’s leader and a gruesome gunfight off Cuba involving American citizens.

“We’ll probably end up in a friendly occupation of Cuba,” President Trump told reporters as he left the White House for a trip to Texas on February 27. “It is very likely that we will end up with a friendly occupation of Cuba.”

The United States is under intense economic pressure on Cuba, which has long relied on oil shipments from longtime ally Venezuela. Those shipments were blocked after President Trump authorized a military operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. The Trump administration eased policy this week as the crisis in Cuba deepens.

The Venezuela operation raised questions about whether the United States could take action against Cuba, where the Trump administration has taken a hard line against the communist government. President Trump called on Cuban leaders to “make a deal” and said Secretary of State Marco Rubio was engaging with Havana “at a very high level.”

President Trump said on February 27: “They don’t have money, they don’t have oil, they don’t have food. And they’re a country in deep trouble right now, and they’re asking for our help.”

For weeks, the Trump administration has been trying to use Cuba’s fuel crisis to force change on the island.

On January 11, the president posted on social media: “There’s no more oil or money going to Cuba, zero! I strongly suggest a deal before it’s too late.”

A shootout over a stolen American speedboat that entered Cuban waters this week made the situation even more tense. The Cuban government said the men on the boat opened fire on Cuban border guards and fired back, killing four people and wounding six others.

Cuban officials said the men involved were Cuban nationals with violent criminal histories. U.S. officials announced on February 26 that several of the men had criminal records. Two of the people, including the one killed, are U.S. citizens. This issue is under investigation.

30 more people charged after anti-ICE protest at Minnesota church

play

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced on February 27 that 30 more people who Justice Department officials said disrupted Sunday services at a Minnesota church have been criminally charged in connection with the incident.

“Today, @thejusticedept released an indictment charging 30 more people who participated in the attack,” Bondi said in a post on X.

Several others, including two journalists, have been previously arrested in connection with the Jan. 18 demonstration at Cities Church in St. Paul.

A group of demonstrators invaded the church and claimed to be the Rev. David Easterwood, acting director of the St. Paul field office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The protests followed the January 7 shooting death of Renee Good, a 37-year-old American woman, by a federal immigration officer in Minneapolis.

Federal agents have arrested 25 of the people named in the newly unsealed indictment, and “more arrests will be made throughout the day,” Bondi said.

“You cannot attack a house of worship,” Bondi posted. “If you do that, you cannot hide from us. We will find you, arrest you, and prosecute you.”

This is a developing story.

How much will it cost to own a new or used car in 2026?

0

There are high costs to owning a car, including gas, insurance, maintenance, and monthly car payments.

play

  • The actual cost of owning a car includes monthly payments, fuel, insurance, and maintenance.
  • The annual cost of owning a new car can exceed $11,570.
  • Brands like Toyota, Hyundai, and Buick are often among the cheapest brands to own and maintain over time.

Whether you lease or finance your car, you can potentially pay more than $500 a month in ownership costs.

When you factor in fuel, insurance, maintenance costs, and other car-related expenses, the real cost of owning a car can be surprisingly high. The average annual cost of ownership varies depending on the type of car you own, gas prices in your state, and more.

Here’s how much American drivers can expect to spend on car ownership.

Monthly car payments make up the majority of ownership costs

According to NerdWallet, the average car lease payment in 2025 was about $596 per month. The average payment for a new car in Q3 2025 reached $748. Used cars had the lowest average monthly payments, with an average monthly payment of $532.

Average monthly cost (2025)
Used car payment $532
car lease payment $596
New car loan payment $748

Your monthly car payment can make up a large portion of your monthly and annual vehicle ownership costs, but it’s not the only expense drivers face. According to NerdWallet, the average annual cost of owning a new car is more than $11,570 for a new car with 75,000 miles. These costs are likely to increase in 2026 due to changes in vehicle and fuel prices.

What are the main costs of car ownership in 2026?

There are four main costs to owning a car in 2026, other than depreciation.

Main costs of car ownership

  • Monthly financing or lease payments
  • fuel cost
  • car insurance
  • maintenance cost

Costs of ownership vary, but cheap and reliable cars, trucks, and SUVs tend to have the most affordable overall cost of ownership due to lower fueling, insurance, and maintenance costs. Larger luxury SUVs and electric vehicles tend to have higher ownership costs.

If you’re a budget-conscious car buyer, look for a reliable hybrid vehicle with a strong value proposition. There are several popular hybrid cars and SUVs that have significantly lower annual ownership costs.

What is the cheapest car brand to own?

Consumer Reports lists Buick, Lincoln, Toyota, Hyundai, and Tesla as having the lowest total maintenance costs over a 10-year period, respectively. Lexus, Toyota, and Subaru make the most reliable new cars, according to the 2025 Consumer Reports ranking list.

Reliable cars that are fuel efficient and have affordable insurance premiums are the most affordable for drivers. The question is, should you finance, lease, or buy a used car when looking for your next car?

Should you finance, lease, or buy a used car in 2026?

Based on NerdWallet data, buying a used car has the lowest average monthly cost. Purchasing a new car is not the most affordable option, and owners will endure extreme depreciation in the first few years. The best bet for most drivers on the road today is to purchase a vehicle that is reliable and used frequently.

Used cars with no more than 36,000 to 50,000 miles are usually 3 to 5 years old, so they’re a solid choice for a used car. If you want the experience of driving a truly new car without dealing with the long-term depreciation of a contract or ownership, leasing is a better option than buying a used or new car.

The biggest factor in determining your average annual cost of ownership is which vehicle you choose. USA TODAY Cars provides vehicle reviews and buying guides for the latest and greatest new cars on the market.

State Farm announces $5 billion in dividends. What you need to know about refunds.

In the coming months, State Farm Automotive customers could receive a refund through the $5 billion in dividends paid by the insurance company.

State Farm Mutual Auto Insurance Company announced on February 26 that it will pay back $5 billion to customers through dividends starting this summer.

According to the International Risk Management Association, a policyholder’s dividend is a return, or payment, of the policyholder’s premium. These dividends result from income that exceeds losses and expenses.

State Farm’s dividend was made possible by the company’s “financial strength and better-than-expected underwriting performance,” the news release said.

How much money can State Farm Automotive customers get back?

Payments average about $100 per vehicle and vary by state and premium paid, according to a news release.

In its announcement, State Farm also shared that auto customer rates will decline by about 10% in 40 states by 2025 due to lower auto repair costs and crash frequency.

Who is eligible for the $100 State Farm payment?

State Farm auto customers with personal auto insurance policies in effect in 2025 will receive payments, according to a State Farm statement obtained by USA TODAY. The insurer said the dividend will be paid to owners of more than 49 million vehicles across its network.

The insurer has not said exactly when customers will receive payments this summer. USA TODAY has reached out to State Farm for more information.

Bill Clinton slams Epstein in deposition: ‘I did nothing wrong’

0

Mr. Clinton became the first former president to be forced to testify to Congress as part of an investigation into how Mr. Epstein built his wealth and network of wealthy and powerful friends.

Former President Bill Clinton has denied any wrongdoing in his relationship with sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, but House Republicans have grilled him about the late financier’s fundraising efforts, frequent visits to the White House and photos in Justice Department files.

Clinton, the first former president to be forced to testify before Congress, said in her opening statement to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee that she had “no knowledge of the crimes that Mr. Epstein was committing.” He dismissed 20-year-old photos from the department’s files and from Epstein’s estate.

“I didn’t see anything and I didn’t do anything wrong,” Clinton said. “Having grown up in a home with domestic violence, if I had any idea what he was doing, I would not have boarded his flight. I would have turned him in myself and led the call for justice for his crimes instead of a sweetheart deal.”

Hillary Clinton’s wife, former Secretary of State, who was also subpoenaed, told the committee on February 26 that she did not know Mr. Epstein and had never flown on his plane. She called her testimony “repetitive” and a “fishing expedition.”

But the committee’s chairman, Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.), said lawmakers had doubts because Epstein visited the White House 17 times during Bill Clinton’s presidency and 27 times after Clinton left office by private plane. Clinton also appeared in photos published in the Epstein files with celebrities and in a number of edited photos of women’s faces in more casual settings.

Comer said documents from the Justice Department and Epstein’s estate depict the late financier raising money for the Clinton Global Initiative, a foundation that seeks action on issues such as climate and health care. Hillary Clinton told the committee on February 26 to question her husband about the matter, since he was a senator during the period in question.

“This is a historic day for the United States Congress,” Comer said outside the Chappaqua Performing Arts Center in New York, near the Clintons’ home. “No one is accusing anyone of wrongdoing. But I think the American people have a lot of questions.”

The investigation comes after lawmakers and women who have accused Epstein of abuse forced the Justice Department to release 3 million pages of documents related to its criminal investigation. But millions more pages remain sealed, and President Donald Trump says the country should move forward.

Epstein died by suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal charges of child sex trafficking. His colleague, Ghislaine Maxwell, is serving a 20-year prison sentence for conspiracy to transport minors for unlawful sexual activity. Critics of the investigation have questioned why more co-conspirators have not been indicted.

Here’s what you need to know about the Clintons’ testimony.

Bill defends Hillary

Mr. Clinton said he had nothing to do with Mr. Epstein and criticized the committee that subpoenaed his wife.

“Nothing,” he said. “She has no recollection of even meeting him. She has never traveled with him or visited his property. Whether you subpoenaed 10 people or 10,000 people, including her, it just wasn’t right.”

Clinton said she tries to answer questions to the best of her ability, but often says she doesn’t remember. He said he can’t play detective about what happened 24 years ago and doesn’t want to say anything he’s not sure about.

Mr. Clinton said, “Mr. Speaker, fire now.”

Clinton ‘very cooperative’, could be targeted by economic intelligence agencies: Luna

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Florida) said Mr. Clinton was cooperative and said she believed Mr. Epstein operated a “honeypot operation” in which he obtained economic information by offering sex to business and political leaders.

“President Clinton has been very cooperative,” Luna said.

She said she could not reveal details of Clinton’s answers to questions until the records were released. But he said he appears to be a target of Mr. Epstein, who is seeking financial information.

“I believe that Jeffrey Epstein targeted many politicians and influential people, especially when it came to economic policy,” Luna added. “I believe it’s possible that not only[Bill Clinton]was targeted, but Secretary Clinton and many others were targeted.”

Hillary Clinton said the questions she faced were ‘very repetitive’

Hillary Clinton praised Comer for “raising a series of serious questions” near the end of her testimony about what else the committee should consider. However, most of the questions were repetitive.

“I’m grateful for that. I want to see the truth come out,” Clinton told reporters. “This was a reassuring way to end what had been a very long and repetitive deposition.”

She referred to the event as a “fishing expedition” in her opening statement. She said she had never been on Epstein’s plane or visited his island and could not recall ever encountering him.

One of the questions from lawmakers was why Maxwell attended his daughter Chelsea Clinton’s wedding in 2010.

“She came as a guest, a plus one for the person who was invited,” Clinton did not elaborate.

Congressmen, Clinton’s Mother – For Now

Lawmakers and the Clintons have agreed not to reveal details of their responses until the full transcript and video of the session is released, which could be as early as February 27 for Hillary Clinton’s session.

Lawmakers took private depositions to cover more areas of questioning than are allowed in traditional congressional hearings.

The Clintons had offered to testify at the public hearing so the public could see the questions and answers immediately. Hillary Clinton’s deposition was briefly suspended due to a controversy over the sending of a photo posted on social media by Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.).

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) said Hillary Clinton was “agitated” and screaming during the session. But the committee’s top Democrat, Rep. Robert Garcia of California, criticized her being asked about UFOs and conspiracy theories in addition to Epstein, calling it a “mischaracterization.”

Why are the Clintons under such scrutiny?

The Clintons claim they had no knowledge of Mr. Epstein’s criminal activities and that they knew little about Mr. Epstein.

Bill Clinton’s name appears in flight records from 2002 and 2003 that document his travels with Epstein to destinations including Thailand, Portugal, Ghana, Russia and China. These trips took place years before Epstein pleaded guilty to charges related to underage prostitution in 2008.

The former president appeared in a photo with Epstein and in a handwritten note in a book Maxwell put together for Epstein’s 50th birthday.

Maxwell attended a Clinton Global Initiative event in 2013. Hillary Clinton said in a BBC interview that her attendance at the event was circumstantial because “thousands of people are participating in the Clinton Global Initiative.”

How unusual is it for Congress to subpoena a former president?

Bill Clinton’s deposition marked the first time Congress forced a former president to testify, although the president sometimes answered questions voluntarily.

Democrats argue the subpoena sets a precedent that could force President Donald Trump to testify about Epstein and other subjects when they regain control of Congress.

“It’s time for the president to answer questions about why files are disappearing from the Justice Department, why there was a White House cover-up, and why people in his administration continue to say this investigation is a hoax,” Garcia said. Trump and Epstein were close friends in the 1990s and early 2000s.

But Republicans argued there was no need to subpoena Trump. Comer said President Trump has already answered “hundreds, if not thousands” of questions from reporters about Epstein and signed legislation to release millions of documents.

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) said the committee questioned women who accused Epstein of abusing Trump, but the women said Epstein was not involved.

“We got his cooperation and asked the victim directly, and he was exonerated,” Luna said.

Bruno Mars returns with “The Romantic.” Is the album good?

0

play

Bruno Mars has spent so much time collaborating with other artists that it will take you a while to remember his last solo hit.

Of course, that doesn’t include the first single from her new album, The Romantic, the upbeat soul-pop throwback “I Just Might,” which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in January.

But before that, our desire for Mars music bars could only be satisfied by his various combinations. There was the ’70s-influenced Silk Sonic project with Anderson .Paak (fueled by the 2022 record and Grammy song of the year winner “Leave the Door Open”). An instinctive musical marriage with Lady Gaga (another Grammy winner who won Best Pop Duo/Group Performance in 2025 for “Die With a Smile”). and, most recently, a caffeinated bop with Blackpink’s Rosé (nominated for three Grammys this year for “APT.”).

Bruno Mars’ “Risk It All” and “Cha Cha Cha” kick off a smooth album

“The Romantic” is Mars’ first solo release since 2016’s triple-platinum “24K Magic.”

With nine half-hour-plus songs, the new album is efficient (and we have him to thank for that in itself), impeccably produced and lyrically light, but full of Mars’ innate melodic ability.

Given the bouncy groove of ‘I Just Might’, it’s a little surprising that the first two tracks tiptoe around and play mariachi against the ping of Mars’ new single ‘Risk it All’, accompanied by swirling strings reminiscent of ’70s TV theme coating ‘Cha Cha Cha’.

The airy imprint of producer Durnst “DMile” Emile, who collaborated with Mars on Silk Sonic songs, is pervasive throughout the album, both on every song and in musical brilliance as Mars’ de facto co-writer. Influences are gleaned from the vintage sounds of The Chi Lights (the pleading ballad “Why You Wanna Fight?”), Santana (the percussive thrust of “Something Serious”), and Philadelphia soul founders Gamble & Huff (“God Was Showing Off”).

Mars, 40, shines as she wraps her velvety voice around her lover’s lament. But when he rolls out lyrics like “The fire ain’t burning like it used to, girl” on “Nothing Left” and “Girl, oh, you’re in trouble tonight/Little mama, you turn me on” on “Cha Cha Cha,” it’s time to roll your eyes.

Bruno Mars’ new album crowns him king of easy listening

Still, much of “The Romantic” is endearing, thanks to Mars’ keen sense of soul and ability to incorporate classic sounds into his music with a contemporary cool.

Standout track “God Was Showing Off” crowns Mars as the easy listening king of modern music. He’s as smooth-talking as he is comfortable in a polyester leisure suit, wears a Western-style hat, and is a singer who can sell drama while tumbling.

Closer ‘Dance With Me’ also spotlights Mars at his old-school best, with a circular guitar melody that evokes images of a late-night dance floor, empty but a couple rocking in their own world. The production is cinematic, with Mars once again guiding the romance between the two as he begs his lover to “fall in love again” under the twinkling stars. But this time his plea sounds like more than just a fantasy.

Start your car every day during winter to avoid these problems

0

All it takes is a moment of discomfort or a tap of the remote start button to avoid major repairs.

play

  • Starting your car every day in winter is very important to prevent mechanical problems.
  • Potential problems include a dead battery, stressed engine, frozen fuel lines, and more.

During major winter storms, you may want to avoid starting your car in frigid weather conditions. Leaving your car unattended for even a day can have a devastating effect on its mechanical components.

Modern cars may be more technologically advanced than cars from decades past, but they are still made up of fragile parts and require regular operation and maintenance for optimal performance. The cold isn’t just unbearable for drivers; It’s also tough on cars.

It’s been a historic winter for millions of Americans. According to the Weather Channel, some areas received nearly 38 inches of snow. Here’s why you should start your car every day, no matter how uncomfortable it is to head out to your driveway or parking lot.

4 reasons why you should start your car when it’s cold

Some of the reasons why engines, batteries, and other mechanical components need a quick workout in the cold are obvious, while others are less well-known.

Why you need to start your car every day in winter

  • The battery may fail completely and the car will not start
  • Freezing moisture can interfere with combustion in the internal combustion engine of the fuel system.
  • Thick oil can strain the engine and cause damage
  • Cracks in hoses and seals can result in leaks and component damage

When a driver starts the engine, several different parts work together to heat and prepare the vehicle, providing fuel, oil, and warmth to the necessary components. This process may be invisible, but as soon as you turn the key in the ignition or press the push-button starter, energy, fuel, and air are delivered to each component, and in the case of a typical gasoline-powered vehicle, the spark plug ignites the mixture and starts the vehicle.

Electric cars rely on high-voltage batteries to transfer energy to electric motors. EVs are very different, but periodically starting your electric car in cold weather to warm up the battery can be beneficial for your car, especially if it’s connected to a power source.

Car batteries can fail in cold weather

According to AAA.com, cold weather can slow down the chemical reactions needed to start your car. When this chemical reaction between your car’s battery and engine slows down, the battery can’t generate enough power to power your car.

In many states, cold winter temperatures can put more stress on your car battery than average spring, summer, and fall temperatures. If you want to avoid complete battery failure, it’s important to start your car before it gets too cold. If your car battery dies, you will need to jumpstart it to restart your car.

Frozen moisture can wreak havoc on your fuel system

A car’s fuel system uses the gasoline stored in the gas tank through refilling and delivers it to the engine at the appropriate time and pressure for the internal combustion process. This transmission process is essential for internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to transfer power to the wheels.

Cold temperatures can cause condensation to form inside the gas tank and cause it to solidify. This condensation can freeze the fuel flow and prevent your car from starting. Keeping your tank full, using fuel additives, and keeping your vehicle warm as often as possible can help prevent moisture from forming and freezing within your car’s fuel system.

If your car isn’t warmed up, your car’s oil can put a strain on your engine

“During the winter, it can take some time for your engine to reach optimal operating temperature,” says Firestone Complete Auto Care. Cold temperatures can thicken the oil and slow its flow.

When oil thickens and slows its flow, it increases friction in your engine and other mechanical parts that rely on lubrication, which can cause catastrophic damage to your car’s critical components. In modern cars, the oil gets hot and flows quickly, but by taking enough time to warm up the oil before driving, you can reduce the serious strain on the engine.

Cold weather causes cracks in critical hoses and seals

Modern cars use many hoses and seals for things like radiators, fuel systems, and air conditioning. Hoses transport important fluids such as oil and fuel into your vehicle. Seals prevent dangerous leaks.

Rubber hoses can become stiff and brittle in cold weather. Low temperatures can also cause rubber seals to harden and shrink. Going from extremely cold to hot temperatures can cause hoses and seals to crack, but warming up your car for a few minutes can help keep hoses and seals at the right temperature.

Winter weather can completely destroy your car and many of its parts. The best way to keep major components in working condition during the winter is to warm up your vehicle regularly to avoid unnecessary and rapid stress on vehicle parts.

Bill Clinton meets with members of the House Oversight Committee on Government Reform on February 27, the day after his wife Hillary Clinton gave a private deposition.

“I have no recollection of meeting Mr. Epstein,” she said in her opening statement. “I have never been on his plane or visited his island, home or office. I have nothing to add to this.”

But much has already been revealed about Bill Clinton and Epstein’s relationship. Even before the Epstein File Transparency Act was enacted, records showed he was on Epstein’s plane several times. Bill Clinton has repeatedly denied knowledge of Epstein’s alleged crimes or any wrongdoing related to them.

Here’s what you need to know when Clinton meets with lawmakers.

Connecticut’s 72-40 rout of St. John’s in Wednesday’s crucial Big East tilt moved the Huskies back to the top of the conference standings and into the No. 1 spot in the latest Bracketology update.

On some nights, UConn looks like the best team in the country. Wednesday was no different, as the defense held the Red Storm to just 19.6 percent from the field. St. John’s was outscored 31-14 in the second half and missed its final 24 attempts.

The win avenges one of the school’s three losses, including to Arizona and Creighton. Arizona, Michigan and Duke are also on the first line.

Due to the Huskies’ strong performance, Iowa State dropped one spot to the No. 2 seed. The Cyclones lost to Brigham Young last weekend, but bounced back with a road win over Utah, which is tied for last in the Big 12.

Alabama moved into fourth place in the SEC with seven straight wins, defeating Auburn and Arkansas. Since losing in double overtime in Tuscaloosa, the Razorbacks have moved into fifth place, ahead of Missouri State and Texas A&M.

There are 11 SEC teams in the field, led by defending national champion Florida on the second line. The conference sent a record 14 teams to last year’s tournament.

At Big Sky Resort, you can go sledding on spectacular slopes, stargaze, and have easy access to Yellowstone National Park.

play

  • Big Sky, Montana is a large ski resort with varied terrain for all skill levels.
  • The resort offers year-round activities for non-skiers, including access to Yellowstone National Park.
  • Visitor interest in Big Sky has skyrocketed, and the region is expanding its infrastructure to meet demand.

BIG SKY, Montana — Cruising along the Morning Star in Big Sky’s alpine bowl, I had a moment of thought. This is incredible. The scenery, openness, snow, everything met my expectations.

Big Sky is a place I’ve wanted to visit for years, and recently the resort has made a number of upgrades that allow first-time and repeat visitors alike to access all types of terrain within the resort. The variety of trail options and vastness of the mountain is a big draw for snowsports enthusiasts. Big Sky is, by some metrics, the largest ski resort in the United States. Big Sky is the third-largest ski resort in the country in terms of skiable area, but continues to have more skiable terrain than its larger competitors.

The snowboard completely met my expectations as a lifelong snowboarder. It’s a great mountain to cruise, and the weather was decent, even though temperatures were unseasonably near 50 degrees in early February. Big Sky has some serious steeps for adrenaline junkies and a few terrain parks dotted around the mountain, but I’m mostly a blue groomer guy myself.

The main attraction for me has always been the mountains, but I’ve learned that Big Sky has so much more to offer.

Due to its proximity to Yellowstone, Big Sky is a great gateway to the park. Big Sky is also where great food meets laid-back Montana living. The resort and surrounding area offers something for everyone all year round.

Here’s why you should check out this trendy spot, which, according to Expedia, saw a 92% year-over-year increase in traveler interest from 2024 to 2025.

Things to do in Big Sky

There’s definitely more to Big Sky than just the slopes, but there’s a good reason why winter is its peak season.

The mountain has three different base areas with terrain suitable for all styles of skiing and riding. It takes the better part of an hour to travel from one side of the resort to the other. Whether you want to find your favorite course and stick with it or try a new route every lap, there are plenty of options.

Lift tickets start at $58, according to the mountain’s website, but you’ll have to buy far in advance to get such a low price. Typical same-day prices are close to $250 or more. This mountain is also part of the Icon Pass network.

The resort has invested heavily in new elevators in recent years, making lines easier to manage.

But beyond that, Big Sky is working to make sure non-skiers feel welcome in town and around the slopes year-round.

From Mountain Village’s base area, skiers and streetwalkers alike can ride the Explorer Gondola to the Lone Peak Tram for spectacular views from 11,166 feet above sea level. On a clear day, you can see all the way to Grand Teton in Wyoming. Most ski lift tickets include access to the Lone Peak Tram, but some have an additional fee starting at $20. For non-skiers, day passes starting at $30 include access to the Explorer Gondola and Lone Peak Tram.

My mountain guide, who has lived and worked in Big Sky for more than 10 years, said he was very happy to see more non-skiers have year-round lift access to the top of Lone Mountain.

Melanie Fish, Expedia’s vice president of global communications, agrees.

“The gondola up the mountain is just as beautiful as in winter and worth riding in summer,” she said in an interview.

further over the mountains

Even if you don’t want to hit the slopes, there’s plenty to do in Big Sky.

“We’re developing an incredible product for people who don’t ski in the winter,” Visit Big Sky CEO Brad Niva said in an interview. “We have snowshoeing, Yellowstone tours in the winter, sled rides, and dog sled rides.”

Ride on a sled? you don’t say

yes. One of the most amazing experiences I had was a dinner on a sleigh ride at Lone Mountain Ranch. A real horse-drawn sleigh takes you from your check-in location to your cabin in the woods, lit only by gas lamps and heated by a huge traditional wood stove.

This experience costs $240 per person (excluding alcohol) and features a hearty meal of prime rib and delicious sides (vegetarian main courses also available), as well as live entertainment of country songs and cowboy stories.

On a clear night, on your way to and from dinner, you can stargaze without any light pollution. However, it is important to remember to bundle them up. Sledding takes about 20 minutes and takes place regardless of temperature or snowfall.

Yellowstone National Park is about an hour from Big Sky, making this ski resort a great basecamp for visitors to Yellowstone year-round.

“Big Sky is building lodging outside the park boundaries because the National Park Service needs help diverting traffic away from the park itself. They’re offering recreational alternatives such as skiing (as well as) hiking, fly fishing, and mountain biking, building infrastructure that encourages visitors to stay longer and reducing drive-in, drive-out Yellowstone day trips,” Fish said. “I think they’re very smart about how they’re dealing with overcrowding in that area.”

Niva added that while Big Sky’s peak season is currently winter, it’s becoming increasingly popular to visit in the summer as well. At its current pace, the resort could see more tourists in the summer than in the winter in the coming years.

“Summers here are really great. We have great mountain biking. I call it a three-sport day. You can mountain bike in the morning, golf in the afternoon, and fly fish until the evening,” he said. “Part of life in Montana is being outdoors.”

However, these activities may not be cheap if you need a guide or don’t have your own equipment. Tours like accredited Yellowstone tours and guided snowshoeing can cost upwards of $100 per person.

where to stay

Big Sky is definitely upscale, with five-star hotels like Montage and One&Only attracting big spenders. The Summit Hotel and Huntley Lodge are the most centrally located, but can be a little more expensive. According to Expedia, average weekend room rates in March range from just under $600 to over $700 per night. However, there are options in the surrounding area at a variety of price points, especially if you’re okay with staying a little farther from the mountain.

In the meantime, the town is working hard to improve its infrastructure to accommodate the surge in tourists, Niva said, adding that accommodation capacity has largely caught up, but it’s a good idea to secure restaurant reservations early if you’re visiting during peak season. I did hear from fellow skiers on the lift that without reservations they had a hard time finding an open restaurant during the dinner rush.

Expedia’s Fish noted that Big Sky is working to carefully expand guest capacity without compromising the experience. Big Sky was one of the first destinations to win Expedia’s Smart Travel Health Check, which recognizes destinations that “offer meaningful travel experiences and actively manage tourism in a sustainable manner.”

Fish said that doesn’t necessarily mean the place has to limit visitors or what they can experience.

“I don’t think of (Big Sky) as being a remote location or an undiscovered destination. They know the crowds are coming and they’re making sure they can handle it,” she said.

Access to Big Sky

The closest airport to Big Sky is Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport, approximately 1 hour away. It is operated by major US airlines and some low-cost carriers. From there, shuttles are available to most parts of the resort, but Niva says renting a car is convenient, especially if you plan on exploring beyond the mountains.

“As we mature as a destination, we want to have a number of shuttle options from the airport to Big Sky,” he said.

If you have time, Bozeman is also worth checking out.

“It’s a cute, walkable town with great restaurants and shopping, and like many mountain destinations, there are nearby ski slopes that are cheaper than the big resorts, which attracts a lot of locals,” Fish said.

The 30th anniversary of Pokemon has arrived. Find out how to check the value of your card.

If you’re a growing Pokemon fan, you might have thousands of dollars sitting around in a warehouse somewhere.

Nostalgic fans celebrating Pokémon’s 30th anniversary with Pokémon Day on Friday, February 27th may feel the urge to dive into a throwback collection of Pokémon trading cards and collectibles.

They may also be surprised to learn that the cards may hold more than just childhood memories, authenticators say, with some rare editions being resold for thousands.

For fans who like to revisit their old collections, here’s how to tell if your old Pokemon trading cards will make you money.

What should you look for in a Pokemon card?

Before knowing the price of a collectible Pokemon card, fans must have the card authenticated and graded. This means that a professional must inspect the card to determine how close it is to “perfect” condition using a designated grading scale, often from 1 to 10. The higher the grade, the higher the potential price you can sell for.

Jonathan Holloway, founder of Pokemon card authentication and pre-grading company Validoe, told USA TODAY that with so many counterfeit cards on the market, it is necessary to verify the authenticity of a card before grading, and that often comes at a price. A real card should have a bright holographic pattern, he said. After authentication, you need to consider the state of the card.

“If someone has a Pokemon card, whether it’s 30 years old or 20 years old and it’s sitting in their mom’s basement or sitting in their mom’s attic, the first thing I recommend is to have someone look at the card,” Holloway said. “You have to look at the condition of the card because I think that’s the biggest indicator of the value that the card can potentially experience.”

According to Holloway, cards are typically evaluated by looking at four specific areas during grading: centering, surface, edges, and corners.

  • Centering refers to the balance between the front and back borders of a card. The ratio of a card’s border to its center determines the card’s grade height.
  • Surfaces such as holographic elements, artwork, and text are inspected to determine how clean the card is. It also requires imperfection and clarity.
  • Look around the edges of the card to see if there are any scratches or marks on the back or front.
  • The corners are inspected to determine if all four corners of the card are symmetrical, sharp, or have white spots or dents/marks.

Some companies, like Holloway’s, also allow you to have your card pre-graded to make sure it’s in good enough condition to submit for official grading. This will help inexperienced collectors and boost their confidence, he added.

Which Pokemon cards are popular?

Perhaps the most popular Pokemon cards are known as the “core set,” or the first original set of Pokemon cards created in the late 1990s. There are several base set versions that include first edition cards. Core set cards can be identified by looking in the bottom right corner and finding the number out of 102.

If you collected cards in the 1990s, Holloway said, those cards may have been included in core sets.

“These are different versions of the same card. But the important thing is that the most popular cards in terms of potential next value are the first editions of the core set,” Holloway said. “Because if you could find a base set first edition Charizard in its original condition, it would now cost six figures.”

Simon Hancox, director of card grading company and marketplace website TC Grader, shared a similar opinion, adding that the original Pokemon Charizard, Blastoise, and Bulbasaur “will always be the most expensive cards in everyone’s collection.”

Hancox, a Pokemon fan and collector for decades, said the value of the cards in the core set inspired people to dig into their collections starting in the early 2010s. Previously, children, including himself, would write their names on cards without worrying about whether they would be able to collect them.

He said the Pokémon community experienced a huge boom during the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused the value of cards to skyrocket.

“Right now in the industry, people are buying products and storing them sealed,” Hancox said. “Now, it’s difficult to judge whether this phenomenon will be the same in 10 or 15 years because everyone is collecting data now.”

Logan Paul sells rare Pokemon cards for $16.5 million

One of the cards, YouTuber Logan Paul’s rare PSA 10 grade Pikachu Illustrator Pokemon card, sold at Goldin Auctions this month for approximately $16.5 million. This sale broke the Guinness World Record for the most expensive Pokemon card sold at auction, making it the second time Paul and this particular card have broken the world record.

Paul purchased the card in Dubai in 2021 for $5.275 million, setting a Guinness World Record as the most expensive Pokemon card sold in a private sale, according to a Guinness World Records news release.

AJ Scaramucci, founder of Solari Capital, was the lucky purchaser and current owner of the rare card, according to a Goldin news release.

Culture related to collecting Pokemon cards

Hancox predicts that the 30th anniversary will see card values skyrocket again, with fans digging through old cards to see their value. He said anniversaries tend to remind collectors of the past and motivate them to buy new packs of cards.

“Once the news becomes mainstream that the 30th anniversary is coming up and more propaganda starts getting out, 100 percent, all the old-school collectors will come back,” Hancox said. “Even people who were collecting five or six years ago will be coming back to reevaluate their cards, purely because new people are coming into the hobby.”

He added that the 30th anniversary gives parents who were once card collectors an opportunity to share the hobby with their children.

“As we approach the 30th anniversary, it’s going to be another opportunity to get kids to open the packs and get involved in the collection and the fun of it and even the (trading card) board game,” Hancox said.

Similarly, Holloway said the nostalgic feelings that cards and Pokémon stories create in people draw them back into the world.

“Most of those kids are adults now. They have money, money at their disposal, so they can now create their own collections that they couldn’t create when they were younger,” Holloway said. “That’s not all. Pokémon is constantly being reinvented. People can’t escape the nostalgia of the brand.”
