Will I be able to become a writer in 2026? Book sales are harder to come by.

0

Consolidation, fewer imprints, and editorial bottlenecks are changing the way fiction book deals are acquired and developed in today’s publishing market.

From Proposal to Publication is a series that takes readers behind the curtain of modern publishing as a business.

I’m so used to rejection that I brace myself for every email, even before I open it. Even if good news might be waiting after that click.

Writers, and to some extent all creators, have to get used to “no.”

An oft-cited study reported in the New York Times (early 2000s) found that about 81% of Americans feel they have a book inside them. Many people aspire to write and publish a book in their lifetime, but only a minority see their work officially acquired and published each year. A little over 2,000 fiction authors have announced deals on Publishers Marketplace in 2025.

One of the deals announced this year was mine. My debut young adult novel, How to Kill a Chupacabra, was acquired by independent publisher Tiny Ghost Press. I almost ignored the email confirming the offer as another rejection.

I started writing this novel in 2021. My father, who inspired this novel, arrived at the hospital as I was writing the outline. He developed complications from cancer. I wrote this book at home, next to my father’s hospital bed, on the weekend, before my shift at work.

That 2021 idea was eventually acquired in 2024, announced this week on Publishers Marketplace, and was scheduled to be published in the summer of 2027.

It will be 6 years from the beginning to the publication date. That’s not unusual. Two years from acquisition to publication is considered a “normal” schedule.

So when people ask, “Can anyone get a book deal?”, what they often ask is something else.

  • Is it even possible for someone who is not famous?
  • Need to know someone in the industry?
  • And even if you do everything “right”, will it still take years?

In summary: yes, no, and maybe. Book contracts are possible to a certain extent. It’s not even the finish line. Here’s what novelists and readers need to know about the behind-the-scenes of novel publishing.

Where people can’t see: fewer chairs, louder music.

The publishing industry is becoming more consolidated, which means fewer publishers (and fewer editors). In a hearing on the proposed merger between Penguin Random House and Simon & Schuster, Judge Florence Pan wrote in her opinion: “Significantly, PRH’s acquisition of S&S would strengthen the oligarchic structure of the market in a market that already appears to be prone to collusion and widespread coordinated conduct.”

Still, about 300 of the deals announced last year were “auctioned,” meaning publishers engaged in bidding wars over them.

When editors become tighter, the time it takes to develop talent, especially debut authors, decreases. The industry’s ability to slowly bet on and develop writers the way a record label develops a musician or a sports team develops a new talent is becoming increasingly rare.

I was fortunate enough to connect with Joshua Perry, founder and editorial director of Tiny Ghost Press, through a call for submissions on social media.

Mistakes Made: An Exclusive Look at Lucy Score’s New Novel

Bestselling author Lucy Score gives you an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the creation of her latest romance novel, Mistakes Were Made.

“The first question I ask[authors]is what goals they want to achieve with this particular publication,” said Michelle Herrera Mulligan, vice president and associate publisher of Primero Sueño, an imprint of Atria Books, a division of Simon & Schuster. “Are you trying to heal trauma, create change in society, or become a commercially successful author with one book after another? Those are all legitimate goals, but they deploy very different strategies and very different budgets.”

Independent publishers and small to medium-sized printing companies often stand out because of their personalized care. It’s a shadow of the Big Five: Penguin Random House, Simon & Schuster, Hachette Book Group, Macmillan Publishers, and HarperCollins, but novelists at the big houses compete for resources with celebrity memoirs and big-name authors. Their books are part of a busy (but highly effective) ecosystem.

Not easy, but doable

One problem with this process is that imprints belonging to the same parent company cannot bid against each other, which limits the number of deals.

The number of traditionally published books in the United States will increase 6.6% from the previous year to 642,242 in 2025, according to statistics compiled by Bowker for Publishers Weekly. Of these, 64,449 titles were novels for adults and young adults.

Even if the books are good, “there are fewer places to sell them than there used to be,” Carly Watters, senior literary agent at PS Literary, told USA TODAY. “A lot of things are based on the desires of fewer people…There may be separate imprints, but they all share an editorial board meeting.”

Regardless of quality, in order for a novel to stand out at a conference, it must be able to sell. “In my experience, (books) are easy to market: anything that can be summed up hook, line, and sinker in one sentence is the one that can get people’s attention,” Watters added. There are some great books that are hard to summarize, she said. It’s like you want to hand it to someone and say, “Read it and then call me.”

Those books will sell. But it’s difficult.

Eric Smith, literary agent and founder of Neighborhood Literary, agreed that for novelists, their work determines their trajectory more than who they are.

“I feel like there’s a lot of contrasting ideas about, ‘Oh, do I need X number of platforms or do I need someone who knows someone?’ But none of that is true,” Smith said. “We have a lot of clients who don’t have a social media following or whose first book they’ve ever written. They…get just as many book deals as someone with a million followers on TikTok or two MFAs.”

Many of his customers come from cold queries (email or form suggestion submissions) with no industry connections. But also, his inbox can reach thousands of posts in a few months if he’s accepting submissions. Smith estimated he received about 3,000 submissions in about 90 days last year and signed several.

This number may seem scary until you remember something important. That means that most of the submitted works were not “bad writers.” It just wasn’t a good fit. Or was it bad timing? Or has the market become saturated? Or maybe the editor just got something similar. or the imprint is closed. Or perhaps the editor was fired. Or the editorial board says, “We already have a slot like this.”

Even if you do everything right, you can still succumb to the industry’s invisible calendar.

Integration makes it clearer. Smith made it clear. Agents cannot submit five projects in a row to the same editor without bridging.

Yes, it can be even more difficult now. This is not because the “gatekeepers” dislike writers, but because the number of lanes maintained by the gates is decreasing.

“I think anyone can get[a book deal]but I would say they have to really want it, and[authors]need to know why they want it,” Herrera Mulligan said. “A significant portion of your time in your life will be spent making this book, more than you can imagine…No one knows your platform better than you. No one knows your audience, and more importantly, no one knows your work itself and how special it is to you.”

Is it easy? No, but it’s possible. The industry moved so slowly that my father passed away before I could show him the book that inspired him. Aspiring traditionally published novelists should be aware of these trade-offs.

As Watters said, people who aren’t optimistic don’t last long in this industry.

Latest information on DHS and TSA closure negotiations. Is the deal coming?

After a bipartisan group of senators swarmed the Senate chamber, one Democratic lawmaker walked out of the negotiations shaking his head, saying he was dissatisfied with the state of the negotiations.

play

WASHINGTON – The Senate again voted March 25 against advancing a funding proposal for the Department of Homeland Security, a sign that momentum to end the chaotic government shutdown from earlier in the week is slowing.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-South Dakota) said ahead of the vote that it would reflect the latest Republican proposal to fund all DHS except ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Division. Democrats pushed back by flatly refusing to move forward with the bill, expressing frustration that the Republican proposal did not include additional immigration enforcement reforms recently agreed to by the White House.

Ahead of the vote, a bipartisan group of senators crowded the floor of the Senate chamber, including Alabama Republican Katie Britt, a key negotiator in the negotiations to end the DHS shutdown. Sen. Gary Peters (D-Mich.) left the meeting shaking his head and told reporters he was frustrated.

Also at the rally was Maine Sen. Angus King, an independent who caucuses with Democrats. He then said one of the main problems is that under the Republican-proposed framework, the Department of Homeland Security could still use other officials to conduct ICE enforcement operations.

“It’s a fantastic solution,” he said.

After what appeared to be a breakthrough on March 23, Republicans presented Democrats with a three-page amendment that included “all of the original reforms” of the bipartisan bill negotiated earlier this year, according to Thun spokesman Ryan Rath.

Democrats countered that the previous law had been parsed before Border Patrol agents killed Alex Preti in January, sparking widespread public backlash. They are calling for further reforms, including banning ICE and Border Patrol agents from wearing masks and requiring a judicial warrant to conduct immigration searches.

“ICE is currently violating 90 different court orders,” Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Connecticut, told reporters. “Without reform, we would be violating our oath of office to fund ICE.”

But Thune said on March 25 that reform would be off the table if Republicans agreed not to fully fund ICE. Despite this, ICE is still operating on a huge influx of funding provided by Republicans last year.

“Why would you ask for a policy change that would apply to funding if there is no funding?” Thun said. “I think they know that the warrant issue and the mask issue are very difficult areas to write policy on.”

Democrats sent a new proposal to Republicans on March 25, but Thune and other Republicans have already withdrawn it.

The situation remains volatile as Congress approaches a March 27 deadline for a two-week recess for Easter and Passover. Two days before the furlough was scheduled to begin, Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), the ranking Democrat on the Senate Appropriations Committee, was not optimistic that lawmakers’ furloughs would remain unchanged. The ball is on the Republican side, she said.

“I don’t control the floor,” she told USA TODAY.

Did Iran give gifts to President Trump? Yes, this is President Trump’s explanation.

0

President Donald Trump said on March 24 that Iran had given the United States a gift after more than three weeks of escalating war with Iran.

At the swearing-in ceremony for new Secretary of Homeland Security Mark Wayne Mullin, President Trump was asked by a reporter why he would talk to Iran if he did not trust it.

“They’re going to make a deal. They did something really amazing yesterday. They gave us a gift, and that gift arrived today. It was a very big gift worth a huge amount of money,” Trump said.

President Trump said last week that Iran has no negotiators left. However, after issuing an ultimatum urging Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz, President Trump extended the deadline, citing “very good and productive dialogue” between the two countries. Iran has repeatedly denied that these talks took place.

What did Iran gift the US?

Trump’s comments in the Oval Office were just a hint of what that might be.

“I won’t tell you what the present was, but it was a very meaningful award,” he said. “It wasn’t nuclear-related. It was oil and gas-related, and that was a very nice thing they did. But what it showed me is that we’re dealing with the right people.”

Asked about the gift on March 25, White House press secretary Caroline Levitt said President Trump would talk about it at a later date.

Iran rejects US ceasefire plan

USA TODAY reported on March 24 that U.S. officials have sent Iran a 15-point plan to end the war, and the military is also reportedly sending thousands of troops to the region. Details of the plan have not yet been made public.

On March 25, state media outlet Press TV quoted Iran as saying a senior political and security official called the proposed ceasefire “too far.”

Since the United States and Israel attacked Iran on February 28, thousands of people have been killed in the conflict, including about 1,500 in Iran and more than 1,000 in Lebanon. The conflict has caused oil and gas prices to soar.

FTC mails $10.9 million checks to credit repair program victims

0

play

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has transferred more than $10.9 million to consumers harmed by fraudulent credit repair operations.

The agency said in a March 17 news release that the program has multiple names and operates under Financial Education Services, United Wealth Education, United Credit Education Services, and the Youth Financial Literacy Foundation.

Michigan-based Financial Education Services is accused of luring and preying on consumers with low credit scores with false promises that their credit scores could be easily fixed, authorities announced, citing a 2022 lawsuit. Consumers were then recruited to participate in a pyramid scheme that sold credit repair services to others and charged millions of dollars in fees.

According to a news release issued in 2022, the company allegedly defrauded consumers of more than $213 million. The program has been in operation since at least 2015, the release states.

What was the plan?

The company claimed it could help consumers remove negative information from their credit reports and improve their credit scores by hundreds of points, according to the FTC. As a result, the company reportedly charged as much as $89 a month for the service.

The agency said these techniques were largely ineffective and often negatively impacted consumers’ credit scores.

“These defendants amassed millions of dollars in junk fees as part of a pyramid scheme selling bogus credit repair products,” FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Samuel Levine said in 2022. “We are pleased that the court shut down this business and froze its assets. We will continue to pursue companies that prey on families’ financial pain.”

In 2024, the agency reached a settlement with the company’s owners Michael Troff, Parimal Naik, Christopher Troff, and Gerald Thompson, and its operators, requiring them to terminate the scheme and release funds to affected consumers.

how to get money

To resolve the issue, officials are sending checks to 443,048 affected customers. It is unclear how much each consumer should expect. According to a March 17 release, the agency is advising recipients to cash their checks within 90 days.

Consumers with questions about their payments should contact Refund Administrator Analytics at 833-699-7995 or by email at FES@refundadministrator.com or visit the FTC website for frequently asked questions about the refund process.

Melania and Barron will vote by mail despite President Trump’s efforts to limit mail-in voting

0

The president wants Congress to ban most mail-in voting. But his wife and son, Barron, also voted by mail in Tuesday’s special election, as did Mr. Trump.

play

WASHINGTON – Like President Donald Trump himself, first lady Melania Trump and her son Barron just voted by mail in the March 24 special election in Palm Beach, Florida, despite President Trump’s years of attacking mail-in voting as “mail fraud” that is susceptible to fraud.

Melania Trump requested a mail-in ballot on the same day as her husband, Saturday, March 14, according to the Palm Beach County Elections Director’s website. She listed her home address as 1100 South Ocean Boulevard in Palm Beach, which is Trump’s Mar-a-Lago mansion and private club.

Barron, who just turned 20 on March 20, also listed Mar-a-Lago as his address and requested a mail-in ballot on March 14, according to voter records. The site shows that votes were cast for both candidates, but does not say when.

The polling location, the Morton & Barbara Mandel Recreation Center at 340 Seaview Avenue in Palm Beach, is a 6.3-mile drive from Mar-a-Lago, or about 13 minutes without traffic.

Barron Trump is the president’s only child with his third wife and is President Trump’s youngest child. He graduated from Oxbridge Academy in suburban West Palm Beach in May 2024 and is currently a student at New York University’s Stern School of Business.

The White House had no immediate comment on the fact that the two voted by mail with the president, even though Trump vehemently opposed the practice in all cases except for illness, disability, military service, and travel.

“As President Trump has stated, the SAVE America Act provides common-sense exceptions for Americans to vote by mail due to illness, disability, military, or travel, but universal mail-in voting carries too high a risk of fraud and should not be allowed,” White House press secretary Olivia Wales said in a March 24 statement to USA TODAY.

The White House did not respond to several requests for comment on March 24 about which exceptions to the proposed SAVE Act President Trump is using for mail-in voting.

Early voting for the two state House seats continued until March 22, when the president was still staying at his Mar-a-Lago mansion in Palm Beach.

The president had endorsed John Maples over Democrat Emily Gregory in the 87th Congressional District in Palm Beach County, Florida. But Maples and Brian Nathan, another Republican running for the Florida Senate, lost to Democrats in the latest sign that Democrats are doing well in traditional Republican strongholds.

Neither First Lady Melania Trump nor Barron Trump have spoken publicly about voting by mail. But the president has vocally attacked it for years, raising questions about the hypocrisy of voting by mail even as the SAVE America Act seeks to prevent most others from voting by mail.

Days before the Florida special election, President Trump ramped up his attacks on mail-in voting, calling it a way for Democrats to try to steal the election.

“Voting by mail means mail fraud. I call it mail fraud, and we have to do something about all of this,” President Trump said at a roundtable on crime in Memphis on March 23.

He also wants the Supreme Court to uphold a Republican effort to block states from counting late-arriving mail-in ballots, a decision that would lead to stricter voting rules across the country.

President Trump had ‘ample opportunity to vote in person’

Florida law allows for no-excuse mail-in voting, allowing any registered voter to request and submit a ballot by mail. Trump has voted absentee and by mail multiple times in recent elections, including while living in Florida after leaving the White House.

But Trump on Thursday night on Truth Social urged South Floridians to get out and vote in person, including a link to find their local polling place.

“While he had ample opportunity to conveniently vote in person during Florida’s early voting period, he chose to vote by mail instead, just as tens of millions of other Americans do every election cycle,” David Becker, executive director of the Center for Election Innovation and Research, told USA TODAY.

Becker said the version of the SAVE Act that was being considered in Congress as of last month would have required a copy of an ID with the mail-in ballot. “That would make voting by mail very difficult for everyone,” including college students like Barron Trump, who live in one place and vote in another, he told USA TODAY in a text message.

The SAVE Act, officially known as the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility Act, is a huge priority for President Trump, who has vowed to stop signing virtually all legislation until Congress passes it.

Republican efforts to pass it face stiff opposition from Democrats. Additionally, while Republicans, who hold majorities in both houses of Congress, generally support the bill, many members are reluctant to eliminate the Senate filibuster and the de facto majority requirement for passing legislation, as President Trump has called for.

At an event on March 23, President Trump appealed to the lawmakers considering the bill to pass it as soon as possible. “I urge Republican senators to do so immediately,” Trump said. “Don’t worry about Easter, let’s go home. In fact, make this for Jesus, okay?”

Despite pressure from President Trump, the bill has a good chance of passing in the narrow Senate.

Victims of private school deepfake porn scandal speak out

LANCASTER, Pa. – An elite private school in a small community was shaken after it was revealed in May 2024 that two male students created 347 explicit deepfake photos and videos of 60 female students.

Almost two years later, victims have told their stories in court, highlighting the long-term trauma and far-reaching effects of deepfake abuse.

On Wednesday, March 25, two former Lancaster Country Day School students were found guilty of felony counts of child sexual abuse (manufacturing child sexual abuse material) and conspiracy to commit that crime.

Many of the victims read statements in court, with some referring to one of the boys as a former close friend. One of the victims called him her “best friend” and said he betrayed her trust. Victims say the boy took photos from social media, photos from shared parties and even screenshots of FaceTime calls, passed them on to other boys, and used artificial intelligence to turn them into pornography. One of the victims said he was only 12 years old in one of the photos the boys used to create the sexual deepfakes.

Deepfake abuse is a growing problem in schools across the country, but experts warn that school policies, legal tools and education are lagging far behind. This is especially problematic for women, as the victims of this abuse are often underage and 90% of them are women, as research shows these deepfake nude images can have far-reaching and long-lasting effects.

Victims, their families, and advocates are working to prevent future incidents at other schools through awareness, education, and policy reform.

What happened at Lancaster Country Day School?

Between October 2024 and May 2024, the two boys created 347 sexual deepfake images and videos of 60 girls. Forty-eight of the victims were other students at Lancaster Country Day School, and the remaining 12 were acquaintances of the students in the photo, and all but one of the victims were under the age of 18.

The school received a tip about the deepfakes in December 2024 but failed to take action, according to an attorney representing at least 10 families in pending lawsuits against the school.

According to an investigation by the Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office, the school received additional information and filed a ChildLine report with the state in May 2024, but the criminal investigation began after a parent notified law enforcement.

“The health and well-being of our students continues to be our top priority,” Lancaster Country Day School Principal Emil Kossoff said in a statement to USA TODAY. “Our deliberate and deliberate approach is always aimed at keeping our school community informed, continuing to heal, and moving forward together.”

‘I felt physically sick’: Victims share severe trauma, nightmares and PTSD

The procedure took more than three hours. The two male perpetrators stood with their parents and lawyers and were given a chance to speak at the beginning and end, but both refused.

The perpetrators often looked down and out front as about 30 victim impact statements were read out, mostly from young female victims but also from distraught parents and prosecuting attorney Janine Swinehart. Several victims cried and struggled to read their statements, their hands shaking as they held the newspapers.

Many expressed the severe trauma that had plagued them over the past two years. They said they found it difficult to trust their male companions and constantly wondered who was cheating on them or sexualizing them. One victim said her first assailant took screenshots during a FaceTime video call to make it appear as if he was showing his body during the call.

Another victim spoke of her pain after seeing a photo of her smiling at a party turned into a pornographic image: “Some of the same people who shared that joy are now the people who took that joy away.”

“When will we as women be able to exist without being changed into something we don’t want to be? When will we be accepted as ourselves?” she continued.

The victims said they developed anxiety, panic attacks, depression and PTSD after the incident. They said they had nightmares about being sexually assaulted and were afraid to be alone at home. Some people draw their blinds and keep their doors locked because they are afraid to walk down the street. Some say their grades have suffered and some have sought therapy to process the experience. Many expressed concern that these photos would resurface when they applied for college or jobs, or met potential lovers. Fear of the unknown grips them.

Another victim said, “This robbed me of my high school experience.” School is a “living hell.” One mother said the experience still affects her daughter, who is now in college and worried about her images appearing on the internet.

Another victim told one of her assailants, “I never imagined that my yearbook photo would be used for my own gratification.” “Your actions affect me every day.”

Perpetrators must complete 60 hours of community service: “One per victim.”

Judge Leonard Brown sentenced both perpetrators to two years’ probation and 60 hours of community service each (one hour for each victim), meaning they would technically be under the supervision of the juvenile justice system but not in a juvenile detention center. At the end of that two-year period, the record is eligible for expungement. Restitution is also being sought, and lawyers for both parties said they expect it to be paid within the next 10 days. Contact with the victim, including third parties, is prohibited.

Judge Brown said that if they had been adults they would have received state prison sentences, but “the juvenile justice system offers a second chance.”

His family and supporters hope for change, saying, “This is not harmless, and this is not a joke.”

Lancaster District Attorney Heather Adams has determined that Lancaster Country Day School employees are not required to report the deepfake incident to Childline or law enforcement. This is due to restrictions in the Pennsylvania Legislature that families and advocates are working to address.

Effective December 20, 2024, the Pennsylvania General Assembly amended the law to specifically include and define AI child pornography as child sexual abuse material. In some states, AI or computer-generated images are not included in existing child pornography laws.

But Matthew Faranda-Diedrich, a partner at the law firm Royer Cooper Cohen Braunfeld who has represented some Lancaster Country Day School families, said there is a “loophole” in the mandatory reporter law that does not require reporting “child-on-child abuse.”

State Sen. Tracy Pennycuick is a co-sponsor of a bill to reform Pennsylvania’s AI child pornography law and hopes the state’s bipartisan effort will spread across the country. In Pennsylvania, the state supports another bill that would strengthen reporting requirements for mandatory reporters.

She wants there to be “no ambiguity” about what actions mandatory reporters should take. “If you suspect there is any type of child sexual abuse material, report it.”

The company opened 60 stores, entered new markets such as New Jersey, and made plans to expand into New Mexico.

The company previously announced plans to expand into New Mexico in August 2024. Marco’s Pizza said at the time that it had at least two locations in the Albuquerque and Rio Rancho areas, with some expected to open by the end of the first quarter of 2025.

As of March 25, the company’s website does not list any New Mexico locations. Marco’s Pizza confirmed to USA TODAY this month that the company plans to open multiple locations in New Mexico later this year.

The Army’s 82nd Airborne Division is heading to Iran. What will Mr. Trump do next?

0

The United States is sending about 7,000 additional Army and Marine troops to the Middle East, signaling the possibility of ground operations in the Iran war.

Although President Donald Trump has repeatedly said he is “not going to send troops anywhere,” White House press secretary Caroline Levitt told reporters on March 25 that the president is “not bluffing” and is prepared to “unleash hell” on Iran.

The Pentagon ordered the deployment of 2,000 soldiers from the Army’s 82 troops.n.d. Airborne division, including part 1cent Brigade Combat Team, to the region. The order, issued March 25, follows the deployment of two 2,200-member Marine Expeditionary Units, the first on March 13 and the second on March 19.

It was unclear where ground forces would be stationed. Their presence gives President Trump even more influence as diplomatic negotiations continue. On March 25, Iran rejected a 15-point peace plan presented by U.S. officials.

If you can’t see the graphic, click here to reload the page.

The Army and Marines will join the approximately 50,000 U.S. military personnel already serving in the war.

Iranian leaders have criticized President Trump for increasing U.S. forces in the region and said they are preparing for a ground operation. Administration officials did not rule out the possibility of seizing or blockading Iran’s Kharg Island, which handles about 90% of Iran’s oil exports.

Who are the Army and Marines being sent to Iran?

Let’s take a look at the units and dates of the assignment.

March 13 | 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit: The 2,200 Marines aboard the USS Tripoli Amphibious Ready Group, USS Boxer (LHA-7) and USS New Orleans (LPD-18), are scheduled to arrive in the Middle East within the next few days. The third amphibious group ship, USS San Diego (LPD-22), remained at its base in Okinawa, Japan.

March 18-19 | 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit: On March 18 and 19, 2,200 Marines and sailors departed Naval Base San Diego aboard the USS Boxer Amphibious Ready Group, USS Boxer (LHD-4), landing dock ship USS Comstock (LSD-45), and amphibious transport dock USS Portland (LPD-27). They are scheduled to arrive in the Middle East in mid-April. The unit is based at Camp Pendleton near San Diego, California.

The MEU is a highly mobile maritime force capable of responding to a wide range of crises, from embassy reinforcements and evacuations to amphibious raids and humanitarian relief. It is designed to be self-sustaining for approximately 15 days of operation.

Amphibious Ready Groups/Marine Expeditionary Units typically have approximately 2,200 Marines and sailors attached to the MEU, according to the U.S. Naval Research Institute. The three amphibious ships carry approximately 2,000 sailors.

March 25 | 82nd Airborne Division: Approximately 2,000 paratroopers from the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, including the 1st Brigade Combat Team, will be deployed to the Middle East, multiple news sources reported on March 25.

The number of paratroopers deployed is reported to be between 1,000 and 2,000, according to Stars and Stripes, a rapid response force that can be deployed anywhere in the world within 18 hours.

Brigade combat teams are trained and equipped to deploy quickly overseas and conduct parachute attacks to enter territory by force.

The 82nd Airborne, which was part of the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, was nicknamed “The Devil in Baggy Pants,” a name given to it by Nazi forces during World War II, according to the Army.

This division is known as the Army’s emergency response team. It specializes in joint forced entry operations and high-stakes missions to occupy militarily hostile territory. It is based at Fort Bragg (formerly Fort Liberty) in North Carolina.

Types of gold coins for investment: Explaining the best bullion coins

0

Identifying, pricing, and selling physical gold can be difficult unless you know what to look for. That’s why many investors start with bullion coins. They are government-issued, standardized in weight and purity, and accepted by dealers around the world. Here’s what you need to know about the most popular programs today.

What makes gold coins an investment coin?

Please know that not all gold coins qualify as investment coins and the distinction is important before purchasing.

government mints produce gold bullion coin It adheres to a standardized weight (usually 1 troy ounce), has strict purity requirements and legal tender status in its home country. Their value tracks the spot price of gold, which is the metal’s current market rate.

numismatic or collectible coin It works differently. “They’re introducing a premium that has nothing to do with the value of gold’s pure metal content,” says Henry Yoshida, a certified financial planner and co-founder of Austin, Texas, fintech company Rocket Dollar. Rarity and historical significance increase its value.

Main types of gold bullion coins

Several government mints produce bullion coins for investors, and global recognition directly impacts each mint’s ease of sale. Some of the best gold coins to buy include the American Gold Eagle, Canadian Gold Maple Leaf, South African Krugerrand, British Britannia Gold, and Australian Kangaroo Gold.

american gold eagle

The U.S. Mint first issued the American Gold Eagle in 1986, making it the nation’s official gold bullion coin. The Mint mints them in 22-karat gold (.9167 purity) and blends small amounts of silver and copper into each coin for added durability.

The Eagle is one of the few gold coins explicitly approved by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for use in voluntary retirement accounts.

Canadian gold maple leaf

The Royal Canadian Mint introduced the Gold Maple Leaf in 1979. It was the first bullion coin to achieve a purity of 0.9999, setting the standard for 24-karat gold coins around the world. The Canadian government guarantees its weight and purity, and it acts as legal tender in Canada.

krugerland south africa

Krugerrand pioneered modern gold bullion investing when South Africa introduced it in 1967, long before most other mints followed suit. The South African Mint and Rand Smelter manufacture it from 22 karat gold (.9167 purity) with added copper for durability and a distinctive reddish hue.

Like the American Gold Eagle, it comes in four sizes:

  • 1 oz
  • 1/2 oz
  • 1/4 oz
  • 1/10 oz

Over 50 years of global trade has made it one of the most famous bullion coins.

British Gold Britannia

The Royal Mint introduced Gold Britannia in 1987. In 2013, the Mint upgraded it to .9999 pure gold, making it one of the purest bullion coins in the world.

Available in 6 sizes.

  • 1/10 oz
  • 1/20 oz

UK investors do not pay capital gains tax on Britannia Coin profits or Value Added Tax (VAT), which is the sales tax on most goods and services in the UK.

australian gold kangaroo

The Perth Mint launched the Gold Nugget series in 1986, transitioned to a kangaroo design in 1990, and officially rebranded to the Australian Gold Kangaroo in 2008. Contains 0.9999 pure gold, making it one of the purest bullion coins available.

gold coins and gold bars

produced by the government mint gold coin Standardized specifications make it globally recognized and easier to sell. In contrast, most gold bars It comes from a private refinery. It lacks the same level of standardization, making it difficult to validate and market.

Bar appreciation is lower than the spot price and more efficient per ounce. “But for retail investors, the ability to sell a coin quickly often outweighs the higher upfront cost,” Yoshida says.

Why investors choose gold coins

For most investors, the coin offers some practical benefits.

  • Global recognition: Government-minted coins are known and accepted by dealers around the world. That familiarity affects how quickly and easily you can sell.
  • Liquidity (ease of conversion into cash): Standardized weight and purity means dealers don’t have to guess what to buy. As a result, transactions proceed faster.
  • Government Mint Authenticity: Government weight and purity guarantees reduce the risk of purchasing misrepresented metals.
  • Fractional size: Smaller denominations allow investors to buy and sell in stages.

Yoshida emphasizes that the one-ounce coin is the most widely traded denomination in the gold market. For first-time buyers, this standardization takes the guesswork out of knowing what they own and its value. Gold is traded in ounces around the world, so using 1 oz coins makes premium comparisons between programs clean and simple.

Where investors usually buy gold coins

Investors typically purchase gold coins through three channels:

  • Precious metal specialistWe help investors acquire physical gold for direct purchase or IRA rollover while providing guidance on custody and compliance, including American Hartford Gold, Goldco, Priority Gold, and Thor Metals.
  • online bullion retailer We offer a wide range of inventory at competitive prices, guaranteed shipping and free shipping on orders over a set minimum order.
  • local coin shop This gives investors the opportunity to consider coins before purchasing and take home gold the same day, but the overhead costs often mean higher prices.

Yoshida recommends asking all dealers three questions when shopping.

  • How long have you been in business?
  • Are you an authorized distributor?
  • What is the purchasing process like?

“Reputable dealers are as transparent about how they buy back gold as they are about how they sell gold,” he says.

conclusion

Gold bullion coins are one of the easiest ways to add physical gold to your portfolio, but the details matter. Purity, premium, and dealer reputation all impact your bottom line. If you’re new to precious metals investing, learn how to buy gold safely and understand common investment scams to avoid costly mistakes before investing.

Government gold coins are the easiest to sell. America’s Gold Eagle, Canada’s Gold Maple Leaf, and South Africa’s Krugerrand are popular gold coins among investors.

Will there be a Nor Kings protest on March 28th? What you need to know

0

play

More than 3,000 protests are planned across the United States on March 28 as part of the nationwide “No Kings” movement, which organizers say could be one of the largest nonviolent demonstrations in the country’s history. Organizers say the number of events continues to grow every day and millions of people are expected to attend.

The event comes amid political tensions, the affordability crisis, and debate over immigration, civil rights, and the role of the federal government. Organizers including MoveOn, the ACLU and national labor unions say the mobilization is aimed at rejecting what they say is an abuse of power and defending fundamental principles of democracy.

What is the Norkings protest?

The “No Kings” protests are a series of demonstrations organized by a national coalition of civil society, trade unions and community organizations. The name reflects the organizers’ position that the United States should not be ruled as a monarchy, but rather with democratic principles and public participation.

The movement is growing rapidly, with more than 5 million people participating in more than 2,100 events in June and more than 7 million people participating in more than 2,700 protests in October, according to data provided by organizers. The March 28 mobilization represents the next stage of this growth and is expected to break attendance records.

For U.S. Latino audiences, the movement’s focus includes important issues such as immigration policy, access to basic services, the cost of living, and other issues that directly impact millions of Hispanic families in the country.

Where will the March 28th No Kings protest take place?

Organizers said protests will be held in all 50 states, with large rallies in cities including New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Denver, Seattle and San Francisco. Large marches are expected in several cities in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions.

For example, in New York, the main protests start at 2pm in Manhattan, while in Philadelphia they start at noon at City Hall. Events will also be held in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland and Delaware, adding dozens more venues in each state.

To find protests near you, organizers recommend using the interactive map available at NoKings.org or platforms like Mobize.us, which allows users to enter their zip code to find events near them.

What are the demonstrators demanding and what issues are driving their mobilization?

Organizers say the protests respond to multiple concerns, including what they describe as immigration policy, the rising cost of living, access to health care and education, and attacks on civil rights and fundamental freedoms.

The main requirements include:

  • Ending policies that affect immigrant communities
  • Protection of the right to vote and freedom of expression
  • Lower cost of living and access to basic services
  • Advocating for the LGBTQ+ community and workers’ rights

Additionally, the movement has promoted trainings such as Eyes on ICE, which aims to educate citizens about their rights and how to legally and safely document federal actions.

What happens next after the March 28 protests?

Organizers expect the March 28 mobilization to be a turning point, especially in a tense political situation with debate over a government shutdown and major decisions in Congress.

If participation reaches expected levels, the movement could establish itself as one of the largest expressions of modern protest in the United States. What happens on the streets and in the political response that day will be key in defining the next steps for this national coalition.

For millions of people, the mobilization will not end on March 28 and is likely to grow further in the months that follow.

When will you receive your IRS refund and how to track it?

0

play

  • Most taxpayers who file electronically can expect their refund by direct deposit within 21 days.
  • The tax deadline for tax year 2026 is Wednesday, April 15th.

Have you filed your taxes yet?

According to a recent survey by Intuit Credit Karma, 52% of U.S. adults are expecting a refund this year, and 54% of taxpayers plan to file early to expedite their refund.

Here’s how to find out when you’ll receive your refund and check your refund status.

Where can I find my federal tax refund?

If you file your federal taxes electronically and include your banking information, you can expect your money to be deposited directly within 21 days. If you do not enter your bank information, you may receive a paper check in the mail within 6-8 weeks.

Filing a return and having it accepted by the IRS are not the same thing. You can find out if it was received by checking the status of your tax return online and looking for the “Refund Sent” alert. From that point on, you won’t have to wait long for the funds to appear in your account.

Will I be able to get my tax refund later due to the government shutdown?

During a government shutdown, the IRS typically operates with significantly fewer employees, which may slow tax refund processing times.

Critical services, such as electronic filing processing, may be delayed and returns may take longer to process, potentially impacting the financial planning of many households.

Other complications associated with the closure may include delays in processing paper-filed returns and interruptions to in-person and telephone services.

How to track your refund

The IRS has an online tool called “Where’s My Refund” that allows you to check the status of your refund.

You can check your refund status within 24 hours of electronically filing your return. Refund information is updated nightly on the IRS website.

Once the IRS approves your refund, it may be deposited directly into your account within a few days.

The online tool requires you to enter your social security number, filing status, and exact refund amount on your return. You will then receive a return receipt (processing), refund approval (refund ready for issue by the indicated date), or refund submission (sent via bank or post).

Another way to check your status is to call the IRS at 800-829-1954.

When is the tax return deadline?

The 2026 tax deadline is Wednesday, April 15th.

To apply for a federal income tax extension, taxpayers have until April 15 to fill out Form 4868. Filing this form gives filers an additional six months to complete their tax return, until Tuesday, October 15th.

You can still file your tax return after April 15 without requesting an extension, but you may be subject to penalties if you are behind on your taxes.

Barron Trump joins the board of a Florida yerba mate tea company

Barron Trump, President Donald Trump’s youngest son, served on the board of a Palm Beach-based beverage company and joined the startup, according to state corporate records.

Registration documents filed in Florida and Delaware list Barron Trump and four others as directors of Soros Yerba Mate, which was incorporated in December. State records show the company is registered at an address a few blocks north of President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago mansion in Palm Beach, Florida.

Yerba mate is a caffeinated herbal tea popular in South America and the diaspora. The leaves can be dried and steeped in boiling water to make a tea, which can be enjoyed hot or cold. Yerba mate is recognized as a healthy alternative to coffee and other teas, and the global yerba mate market is expected to rise over the next decade, according to a report in USA Today.

According to his online profile, Soros’ name comes from Florida’s nickname, the Sunshine State, and is a combination of the Spanish word sol, meaning sun. This is also a palindrome, with “sol” spelled out before and after.

Barron Trump, who turned 20 on March 20, is the only child of President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. He graduated from Oxbridge Academy in suburban West Palm Beach in May 2024 and is currently a student at New York University’s Stern School of Business.

Stephen Colbert to write script for new movie ‘The Lord of the Rings’

0

play

Stephen Colbert goes on an unexpected journey.

The comedian announced a surprising new job after “The Late Show” ended in May. He plans to write a new book in the Lord of the Rings series with his son.

Warner Bros. made the announcement in a social media clip shared on March 25, in which “The Lord of the Rings” director Peter Jackson video chats with Colbert. The comedian explained that he came up with the idea for the film after reading the first six chapters of The Fellowship of the Rings, which were not included in Jackson’s Lord of the Rings film trilogy.

“I thought, ‘Oh, wait, maybe it fits itself into a larger story,'” he said. “Is it possible to make something that is completely faithful to the source material, but also completely faithful to the movies you guys have already made?”

Colbert added that he developed the idea with his screenwriter son, Peter McGee, and pitched it to Jackson about two years ago. At the time, he thought he didn’t have time to work on the film, but that changed when CBS’s “The Late Show” was canceled.

“I knew I couldn’t do that and this show at the same time, but as it turns out, I’m going to be free this summer,” Colbert joked. He added: “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to finish a TV show and write a movie script. But I’ll see you all in the Shire.”

Colbert’s film has the working title The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past, and Colbert and McGee will co-write the screenplay with Philippa Bowen. The synopsis reads: “Fourteen years after Frodo’s death, Sam, Merry, and Pippin set out to get back to the beginning of their adventures. Meanwhile, Sam’s daughter Elanor is determined to discover long-buried secrets and uncover why the War of the Ring was nearly lost before it began.”

Colbert is known to be a die-hard Lord of the Rings fan, regularly speaking on the show about his love for J.R.R. Tolkien’s novels and film adaptations. He also had a cameo appearance in the 2013 prequel film The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. “He was like a child, jumping forward and taking pictures and posing next to different statues and props,” Jackson said at the time. “He’s a fan of Uber.”

Colbert’s appointment came as a surprise to fans, as he did not have much experience as a screenwriter. However, Colbert co-wrote the 2006 film Strangers with Candy, which was based on the Comedy Central series that he co-created with Amy Sedaris. Earlier this month, Colbert received an honorable mention at the Writers Guild of America Awards in New York, where comedian Robert Smigel said the “Late Show” host “has always been a great writer.”

The movie “The Lord of the Rings” will be Colbert’s first major appearance after “The Late Show,” which ends on May 21st. Colbert hosted the satirical talk show The Colbert Report on Comedy Central from 2005 to 2014, and has been hosting CBS’ late-night show since 2015.

“Shadows of the Past” is one of two new “Lord of the Rings” movies currently in production, the other being Andy Serkis’ “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,” scheduled for release in 2027. Ian McKellen hinted last year that his character Gandalf and Elijah Wood’s Frodo would appear in the film, but no official casting announcement has been made.

“I’m really starting to feel like we want to reunite our old bands in such a special way,” Wood recently told USA TODAY. “I’m excited to see it come to fruition. I can see that.”

Americans stranded in Middle East during Iran war blame Washington government

0

play

Emaan Abbas, American beauty consultant, I lived in Dubai for over 9 years. She said she lived there in peace until the war with Iran began on February 28. But when he started hearing loud thuds overhead from Iran’s counterattack against the United Arab Emirates, a U.S. ally, he decided it was time to leave.

Abbas started watching social media videos after seeing the headlines the weekend the war began. However, neither she nor her sister received any direct communication from the State Department.

She enrolled in the STEP program on March 2 because she could still hear “loud noises” overhead. This is a free service for U.S. citizens and nationals so that the State Department can contact them during emergencies. The MyTravel.gov website states that one of the program’s benefits is that it “assists you in contacting your embassy or consulate in the event of an emergency, such as a natural disaster, civil unrest, or family emergency.”

Although she has not yet had direct contact, she said she has seen on social media that the U.S. government is urging Americans to evacuate certain countries in the Middle East, including the UAE.

Social media posts listed two numbers for Americans in need of emergency assistance. One of the phone numbers listed was not available internationally. She said the other was a recorded message with no instructions on how to exit.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters on March 3 that the department would assist anyone in need.

“We are confident that we can help all Americans. As I said, right now we have about 1,500-plus, probably closer to 1,600 Americans requesting assistance,” Rubio said. “And we know we can help them. It’s going to take a little bit of time because we don’t have control over the airspace closures.”

Abbas booked his own flight to Cairo, where his family was staying. Her first flight was canceled and rescheduled to Saturday.

The first official communication from the department to her came via email on March 10th. “I have booked an evacuation flight from Dubai tomorrow”, meaning March 11th. She replied that she had already gotten off and would give her seat to someone else.

“It took 11 days of conflict before we heard back from the State Department. It’s disappointing to say the least,” Abbas said.

“The State Department has contacted every American who registered an interest in our assistance and provided personalized assistance,” State Department spokesperson Tommy Piggott told USA TODAY in an email.

“The government hasn’t helped us at all.”

People like Abbas detailed their frustrations with seeking help. And just like her, many people are sharing their stories on social media.

Travelers like Alyssa Ramos, a self-proclaimed solo travel blogger and social media influencer, also criticized the U.S. response to evacuation assistance. On March 2, she posted a video on Instagram detailing her experience leaving Kuwait. “The U.S. government hasn’t helped us at all, even though they say they’re on the news,” she said.

Sasha Hoffman is an American from Boston stuck in the UAE. She was spending time abroad for work. She described the situation in which she was trying to leave Dubai as chaotic and confusing. “I think it was a very frustrating experience that they weren’t helpful at all, because as American taxpayers and American citizens, I felt like there were a lot of people who didn’t know what to do and felt really helpless and scared. There was no clear direction.”

In a statement to USA TODAY, State Department official Piggott said the department “has completed more than 70 flights since February 28, safely evacuating thousands of Americans from the Middle East.”

“Popular confusion”

The State Department has come under fire from some members of Congress, such as Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.), the ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, who wrote the letter to Rubio.

The letter asked for clarification on how the State Department planned to ensure the safety of Americans before the war began.

“The Department under your direction has not prioritized evacuating Americans from conflict zones or adequately preparing the U.S. embassy and personnel for the consequences of President Trump’s decision to go to war on February 28,” Meeks wrote. “It was on March 2 that Molla Namdar, Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs, posted on X for Americans, “Leave Now…Using Available Commercial Transportation” from 14 countries. But by then, commercial flights had largely ceased across the region, leaving Americans stranded. Conflicting messages telling Americans to leave the country without evacuation caused mass confusion.

Meeks also argued that the department could have raised the travel advisory to Level 4 weeks before the campaign began to allow diplomats and U.S. citizens to leave.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) also criticized the Trump administration in a post shared on X.

“On the third day of the war, evacuation warnings were issued, airspace was closed, and no U.S. government aircraft were placed in service,” Schumer wrote. “This is what happens when you recklessly eviscerate the State Department under DOGE and rush into war without a plan.”

Asked why there was no plan to evacuate Americans, President Donald Trump said: “Because everything happened so suddenly.”

“In response to Operation Epic Fury, at 9 a.m. on February 28, the State Department quickly established a 24/7 task force to provide security guidance, travel assistance, and other assistance to Americans overseas,” Piggott said in a statement.

play

Travelers still stranded in Middle East during Iran war

Travelers in the Middle East are not only worried about their safety during the Iran war, but also worried about being stranded and unable to fly home.

Was the restructuring of the State Department a factor?

Last July, the State Department began cutting its workforce, affecting more than 1,300 people, including 246 diplomats.

Piggott said in a statement to USA TODAY that the cuts have not affected the State Department’s recent performance in the Middle East.

“RIF (force reduction) has not had an adverse impact on our ability to respond to this operation, our ability to plan, and our ability to perform service to the American people,” Piggott said. “In fact, we were able to respond more quickly and effectively. This was the whole point of the reorganization: empowering frontline staff while allowing them to move at the ‘speed of relevance’.”

John Dinkelman, president of the American Diplomatic Association, which represents more than 15,000 active and retired U.S. diplomats and diplomats, disputed the statement.

“Laying more than 1,300 people from an organization in such a haphazard manner will have a negative impact,” Dinkelman said.

“We caused this.”

“Depending on the emergency situation, the U.S. government may evacuate U.S. nationals to a safe location or provide other forms of exit assistance if commercial means are not available,” according to the State Department’s website.

It also said that in times of crisis, U.S. government-coordinated transportation will take place from dangerous areas to safe locations that are easily accessible. However, your destination may not be in the United States

The department also waived its legal obligation for Americans to reimburse the government for their travel expenses.

Dinkelman found the department’s response to the U.S. war on Iran particularly problematic. Because “unlike most of the things we deal with in emergencies, this one was caused by us.”

“The question in this story is what information was given to the State Department and when was it given?”

Taylor Frankie Paul investigated for third violent incident

0

play

New allegations of domestic violence have reportedly surfaced against “The Secret of Mormon Mrs.” star Taylor Frankie Paul.

Paul, 31, has been in the spotlight even more this month after a video surfaced showing him in a heated argument with ex-partner Dakota Mortensen. The footage is related to an assault charge to which she has pleaded guilty, and snowballed into the cancellation of the next season of The Bachelorette, in which Paul was scheduled to star.

Now, NBC reports that the Mormon mom and influencer is being investigated for another domestic violence incident. The outlet reported on Wednesday, March 25, that Utah State Police are investigating domestic violence charges Mortensen filed against Paul in February, stemming from an encounter in 2024.

The allegations bring three charges against Paul, including a 2023 altercation and an alleged altercation in February that became public a week before her season of the ABC dating reality show aired.

Taylor Frankie Paul was reportedly charged in another domestic violence case in 2024

A spokesperson for the West Jordan, Utah, Police Department confirmed the report to NBC, but declined to provide further details, citing the ongoing public investigation.

Authorities said they are reviewing the video Mortensen submitted and that Mortensen was referred to the department by Draper police, who are investigating a separate incident involving the two men. Police told NBC they have not yet spoken to Paul, but have been in touch with his attorney and are asking him to provide a written statement or appear in court for questioning.

USA TODAY has reached out to Mortensen, Paul and the West Jordan Police Department for comment. Paul and Mortensen’s on-and-off relationship forms a major storyline on Secret Lives, and they have one son, Ever, 2. Paul has two children from a previous marriage.

Taylor Frankie Paul’s domestic violence allegations explained

In 2023, Paul filed for probation (a legal term for when a defendant pleads guilty but the court delays a conviction) for felony aggravated assault following an alleged domestic violence incident involving Mortensen. Video of the incident, released by TMZ on March 19, has since sparked heated debate on social media, leading to both “The Bachelorette” and “Secret Lives” suspending filming and promotion.

The aggravated assault charge will remain for three years until Paul meets the terms of his plea agreement, and will be reconsidered in August, according to reports. If she complies with the terms of the agreement, which include supervised probation and avoiding breaking the law for 36 months, the felony will be reduced to a Class A misdemeanor. Recent accusations could put that in jeopardy.

In another example, the Draper Police Department in northern Utah confirmed to People on March 16 that there was an ongoing “domestic assault investigation” involving Paul and Mortensen. Both suspects are reportedly leveling charges against each other. Law enforcement contacted them on February 24 and 25, a spokesperson told the outlet.

Mortensen has since reportedly applied for a confidentiality order against Paul.

Taylor Frankie Paul, Dakota Mortensen tell different stories

Since news of the investigation by Draper police broke, Paul and Mortensen have released statements holding the other party accountable.

Paul’s rep told People magazine and Variety that he is a victim of abuse.

“After enduring years of extensive emotional and physical abuse and threats of retaliation in silence, Taylor has finally found the strength to confront her accusers and is taking steps to ensure she and her children are protected from further harm,” the statement said. “Too many women suffer in silence while surviving ex-partners who are aggressive, jealous and refuse to move on with their lives.

“Taylor remains silent out of fear of further abuse, retribution, and public shaming,” the statement continued. “She is now considering all options, seeking support, and preparing to own and share her story.”

Mortensen’s rep said in his own statement to Entertainment Weekly on March 18 that his priority was to protect his children and that he was focused on co-parenting his children, even though he was aware that news of the police investigation could surface before Paul’s “Bachelorette” run.

“He knew this could lead to him coming out, but he wasn’t willing to do that because he always wanted a decent relationship with Taylor,” a rep told the publication. “I think he just kind of let everything happen to him and now he realizes in all its seriousness that he can’t do that.

Get early forecasts for the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season from AccuWeather

0

AccuWeather’s first hurricane season outlook says the number of storms may not be large, but warm water temperatures could pose a surprising hazard.

play

Early hurricane season forecasts are beginning to emerge and will continue to be forecast over the coming weeks, with the Atlantic hurricane season opening on June 1st, 68 days away.

AccuWeather, a private weather company, released its seasonal outlook on March 25th. Forecasts are expected to be released soon by a research team at Colorado State University, usually in early April, by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in late May, and by a number of other agencies.

There is growing confidence that a strong El Niño will develop into the summer, and forecasts are expected to take into account the dampening effect that Pacific weather patterns may have on storms in the Atlantic basin. However, some of the most destructive hurricanes in the United States have entered the continental United States during El Niño events. Remember Hurricane Michael in 2018 or Hurricane Andrew in 1992?

Similar preparations are recommended every year for the average person living within a hurricane’s reach, regardless of the seasonal outlook. Hurricanes like Hurricane Helen also point to the path of hurricanes whose impacts could reach deeper inland and be far more devastating than many imagine.

Craig Fugate, a former FEMA administrator and former Florida Emergency Management Agency director, said seasonal forecasts “were never designed to tell families whether their homes would be affected.” “When people hear, “El Niño will suppress activity,” or “the season is below average,” they interpret that to mean, “It’s probably safe.” History says otherwise.

“Seasonal forecasts tell you how crowded the oceans are. Hazards tell you where the storms are going,” Fugate says. “The numbers may change due to El Niño, but the risks remain the same. Prepare the same thing every year. You only need to do it once.”

For example, the 1992 season had only seven named storms, including Andrew, one of the most destructive U.S. hurricanes on record.

What are AccuWeather’s hurricane predictions for 2026?

AccuWeather’s forecast warns that the two main concerns this hurricane season are warm ocean waters and rapid intensification of storms near the U.S. coast. However, when an El Niño occurs in the Pacific Ocean, tropical activity can drop to near or below historical averages as the season progresses.

An outlook from a team at private weather firm AccuWeather, released March 25, predicts the season could be close to or below historical averages. Predictions include:

  • 11 to 16 named storms
  • 4-7 hurricanes
  • 2-4 major hurricanes (category 3 or higher)
  • 3-5 Direct Impacts on the United States

According to AccuWeather, the northern and eastern Gulf Coast and the Carolinas are at higher-than-average risk of a direct hit this season, but south-central Texas may be at lower-than-average risk.

The average number of named storms in the Atlantic over the past 30 years is 14. AccuWeather predicts a 40% chance of 14 or more named storms and a 15% chance of 16 or more in 2026.

Alex DaSilva, the company’s chief hurricane expert, emphasized the need for preparedness. “It’s critical that everyone from South Texas to Maine prepare equally for each hurricane season, regardless of the forecast,” DaSilva said.

Will El Niño affect hurricane season?

When El Niño occurs along the equator of the Pacific Ocean, trade winds over the Pacific Ocean tend to weaken. This tends to increase updrafts and bring down shear winds over the Atlantic Ocean, potentially destroying the tropical cyclone’s structure.

But it can’t eliminate hurricanes or protect against impacts, “especially in the Gulf region,” Fugate said. “Gulf countries play by different rules.”

“Once a system enters the Gulf, local conditions become much more important than seasonal signals,” he said. And with shorter timelines, “we could go from a tropical cyclone to a major hurricane that’s about to make landfall faster than people can adapt.”

‘Unusually warm’ seawater raises concerns about hurricane season

Warm water is an essential element in hurricanes and helps promote rapid intensification of the storm. Sea surface temperatures are already warmer than normal in parts of the Atlantic Basin and are expected to “reach unusually high levels again this summer,” DaSilva said.

As a result, storms that form closer to the coast may pose a greater threat, giving people less time to respond and potentially increasing the likelihood of preseason or early season storms, he said.

The spread of orange and yellow on the sea surface temperature map is “a very concerning trend as we prepare for hurricane season,” DaSilva said. If this pattern continues with water temperatures above historical averages, it is a recipe for rapid intensification.

The same thing happened with Hurricane Michael. Maximum sustained wind speeds rapidly increased from 115 mph to 160 mph within 24 hours.

Looking back at the 2025 season

2025 marked the first time in 10 years that no hurricanes made landfall in the continental United States, but the season did see three strong Category 5 hurricanes. The storms included Hurricane Melissa, whose name was recently retired as it affected Jamaica and the entire Caribbean. At least 95 people died.

This season had 13 named storms, five hurricanes, and four major hurricanes with wind speeds of 111 miles per hour or higher.

Nike will release three shoes on March 26th. See colors and prices.

Nike Air Max Day is fast approaching, and sneakerheads around the world are gearing up for the release of multiple shoes based on the original Nike Air Max 1, which launched nearly 40 years ago.

This year’s anniversary also marks the official release date of three more Nike shoes. New Nike Air Liquid Max in Radiant and Apple Green, Women’s Air Max 95 in Pink Foam, and Air Max 95 in Volt and University Red.

The shoes will go on sale at 10 a.m. ET via SNKRS, the app that gives fans access to Nike releases and events. Also available on Nike’s website and at select Nike partner retailers.

Nike Air Max Day is held each spring to celebrate the release of the original Air Max 1 created by designer Tinker Hatfield.

Nike said on its website that as a company, it was trying to design a shoe that allowed customers to see the airbags inside the shoe, which made walking and running extremely comfortable.

Hatfield went to Paris in search of inspiration. Because Paris is known for its intricate buildings. What he saw there was the Center Pompidou, known as an inside-out building because passersby can see its heating, ventilation, and escalators from the outside.

After seeing the Center Pompidou, Hatfield began sketching out ideas for his shoes, cutting out part of the midsole to expose the airbag. Hatfield worked with Nike’s Air Lab to perfect the design for the Air Max 1, which was released on March 26, 1987.

Here’s a closer look at the shoes Nike is releasing this year, 39 years after the shoe’s debut.

Nike releases green, chrome version of Air Max

Nike announced on its website that its latest release, the Nike Air Liquid Max, will cost shoe lovers $230. The company said the sneaker is futuristic and “a new innovation in sportswear” that combines comfort with 40 years of Air Max history.

Nike says the shoe features a flexible, low-to-the-ground contoured Air unit and areas of negative space that allowed shoe designers to eliminate excess material and weight.

Available in green and black, inspired by poison dart frog colors and toe pads. Nike says it also features a chrome Swoosh and a tinted translucent rubber outsole.

Mike McCoy, the shoe’s lead color designer, said in a press release that for poison dart frogs, “color is confidence and boldness is protection.”

“We created the Nike Air Liquid Max with this in mind: a silhouette that feels a little dangerous, a little mysterious, a complete break from the past and made for today’s generation,” McCoy said.

What about the other two Nike Air Max Day releases?

Next up is the women’s Air Max 95 in pink foam, priced at $190. This “Big Bubble” edition of the Air Max 95 is constructed with layers of synthetic leather and mesh, featuring a gradient that transitions from black to white.

Nike writes, “Playful pops of pink foam accentuate the lace loops, branding and Air sole.” “Large Max Air units in the heel and forefoot enhance style while highlighting the design with maximum cushioning.”

Lastly, there is also the Air Max 95 Big Bubble in Volt and University Red, priced at $190.

According to Nike’s website, this version of the Air Max features a black sole, layered black, blue, green and red bandana print, and neon green (Volt) lace loops and Swoosh.

‘No Kings’ protests begin in Southern California cities on March 28th

Anti-Trump administration protests are also coming to Southern California as part of the massive nationwide “No Kings” demonstrations scheduled for Saturday, March 28th.

Organizers say more than 3,000 events have already been planned for March 28, in what they predict will be “one of the largest single-day, nonviolent, nationwide protests in U.S. history.” In Southern California, dozens of demonstrations are planned in Los Angeles County alone.

Los Angeles was the site of protests against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in January and protests against the U.S.-Iranian conflict earlier this month.

Here’s what you need to know ahead of the March 28 protests.

What is the “No Kings” protest and what does it mean?

In June 2025, a large number of Californians participated in the “No Kings Day” protests planned for the same day, which included 250 members of the U.S. Army.th Anniversary Celebration – An expensive parade that was also held on the president’s birthday. A few months later, in October, a new wave of nationwide “No Kings” protests erupted.

“The president believes his rules are absolute,” according to the No Kings website. “But America has no king, and we will not back down from chaos, corruption, and brutality. Our peace movement is growing. ‘No King’ is not just a slogan; it is the foundation on which our country was built.”

No Kings said the core principle behind all events held under its banner is a “commitment to nonviolent action.”

“On March 28, we will come together to show that our communities reject corruption, senseless wars, and division,” Move On Civic Action Executive Director Katie Bethel said in a statement. “Instead, we welcome immigrants, believe in the rule of law, and support an economy that works for everyone.”

MoveOn is one of a number of organizations whose leaders have expressed support for the large protests planned for March 28th. Examples include the American Civil Liberties Union, the Service Workers International Union, and the Human Rights Campaign.

“More of us than ever will rise up because America does not belong to the strong or to those who rule through fear,” Bethel said. “It belongs to our people.”

Which top seeds will be upset?

0

Well, it was a fun first weekend. What other crazy things can happen in the second one?

There are 16 teams remaining in the men’s NCAA Tournament, and by the end of the weekend, four of those teams will remain to head to Indianapolis. March Madness 2026 has arrived with a bang. There is good reason to believe this trend will continue in the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight.

Some of the bold predictions made at the start of the tournament didn’t come true, but a few did. So it’s time to think again and share some bold predictions for what will happen in the final push to the Final Four.

Arizona vs. Arkansas, Michigan vs. Alabama illuminated scoreboards

Get ready to watch incredible offenses play against each other and score tons of points.

Four of the remaining 16 teams are in the top 13 in points, and even better, they will be playing each other. Alabama, which boasts the nation’s top offensive line (91.6 points), will face the University of Michigan, which ranks ninth (87.4 points). Both teams have scored at least 90 points in their first two games and will surely surpass that mark.

In the West, the second-highest scoring team in the state of Arkansas (90.2 points per game) will face Arizona State (86.1 points per game), which ranks No. 13 in the nation. The Wildcats will score at will, considering the Razorbacks’ scoring defense ranks 331st out of 365 teams, and Arkansas has the talent to match. As a result, there are two games in which both teams pass the century mark.

Try not to blink when these two match up. If you don’t, you’ll miss out on a ton of points.

Another No. 1 seed falls.

An all-No chance. The No. 1 seed for the Final Four is gone. There are 3 left. Expect the other one to get knocked out.

Arizona and Michigan looked nearly perfect, but they will have to deal with high-powered offenses that could clearly be overwhelming. Duke also has to face a red-hot St. John’s team. A storm is brewing for one of the top seeds, resulting in only a maximum of two people participating.

What’s more, the Blue Devils will be the first team to be bounced, but there are clearly some holes that will be exposed by the Red Storm and Elite Eight opponents, further widening John Scheyer’s quest for his first championship as coach.

Dan Hurley hurt the team.

You know the court gets hot when Hurley is on the sideline, but he could make it too hot for the team to survive.

Connecticut will be playing a classic game against Michigan State, and the final minutes will decide the outcome of the game. Whether it’s a foul call or a non-call, something will happen that will make Hurley furious with the officials. During the postseason, referees try to be lenient, but with coaches going too far and getting technical fouls and, in some cases, double-T, giving the Spartans crucial free throws, it will be very difficult for the Huskies to overcome the margin.

Michigan State advanced, but the question after that will be whether Hurley was to blame for the loss. Check out the memorable press conference.

Houston to Final 4

No team is more favored to tie with Indianapolis than Houston. Not only will the Cougars get an advantageous path to play Illinois against either Nebraska or Iowa State, but they will also be able to play in their own city. Things don’t get much better for Kelvin Sampson’s side, who have looked completely dominant so far.

With momentum and a great matchup, Houston not only won, but easily won with double-digit wins in the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight. The blowout win marked one of the most impressive advances to the Final Four in the fight for a return to title contention.

Last season finally saw Houston break through its second weekend struggles after losing for three straight seasons before finally returning to the Final Four. This is the first time the Cougars have made back-to-back appearances since Phi Slama Jama shocked the world.

Rick Pitino makes more history

No matter where he goes, success always comes with Pitino. Now, in 2026, he has further cemented his name as one of the greatest coaches of all time.

St. John’s flipped the script from the start of the season, playing with the swagger needed at this time of year and looking like a legitimate title contender. Not only did the Red Storm defeat top overall seed Duke, they advanced to the Elite Eight and reached the Final Four for the first time since 1985. With this accomplishment, Pitino became the first coach with four programs to advance to the semifinals.

The road to his first national championship will be tough, but it will cap off a remarkable comeback in New York City.
