Will King Charles be able to channel Queen Elizabeth’s magic during his visit to the United States?

0

play

During her first visit as a sovereign to the United States, Queen Elizabeth II charmed President Dwight D. Eisenhower and successfully mended the rift between the two countries over the 1956 Suez Crisis.

Seventy years later, his son Charles will be put to the test in his first visit to Washington as a king, seeking to smooth relations between Britain and President Donald Trump, torn apart by tensions over the course of the Iran war and the future of the NATO alliance.

Will Charles III be able to harness his mother’s magic?

At stake may be the future of the “special relationship” between the two countries, forged during World War II and now even more at risk since Britain ignored Eisenhower’s advice and, in a spectacular miscalculation, tried to seize control of the Suez Canal.

As a constitutional monarch, Prince Charles has no intention of negotiating Britain’s role in reopening the Strait of Hormuz or the structure of the European Security Alliance, in which the United States appears determined to play a smaller role. These are the tasks of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and his government.

But with a state dinner and garden party at the White House, an address to a joint session of Congress, and photogenic sightseeing in New York City and Appalachia, Prince Charles and Queen Camilla will be looking to strengthen the foundations of their countries’ long ties, whatever the pressures of the moment.

Buckingham Palace said in a statement: “Their program will mark the 250th anniversary of America’s independence and celebrate the historic links between Britain and the United States and the modern bilateral relationship.” (Half a century ago, in 1976, Elizabeth was participating in the bicentennial celebrations.)

In an interview about the visit with London’s Sky News, Trump was eager to meet Charles again, calling him “a great gentleman and a friend of mine.”

However, he was less optimistic about the country the king represented. When asked about the status of the “special relationship,” the president sarcastically replied, “With whom?” He said Mr Starmer had made “tragic mistakes” on immigration and energy policy and described US-UK relations as “sad”.

King Charles faces a major diplomatic test

King Charles’ first visit to the United States as a monarch comes amid tensions over NATO and Iran. USA TODAY’s Susan Page explains what’s at stake.

When Nixon tried to play matchmaker

Charles is no stranger to presidents.

In 1959, at the age of 10, wearing a Scottish kilt and knee socks, he met Eisenhower, a respected World War II general who had been invited to Balmoral Castle. On his first visit to the United States, Prince Charles was 21 years old and received blessings from President Richard Nixon, who reportedly hoped to stir up the prince’s romantic feelings for his eldest daughter.

“That was when they were trying to marry me to Tricia Nixon,” Charles recalled in an interview with CNN.

Years later, the prince met President Ronald Reagan, attended his wedding to Diana Spencer, and later became particularly close to First Lady Nancy Reagan, who sympathized with Elizabeth during their ill-fated marriage. During more than 19 visits to the United Kingdom and the United States, he also occasionally met with Presidents Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden.

And Mr. Trump.

The two are close in age. The king is 77 years old; The president is 79 years old. Mr. Trump has admired Charles’ mother since he was six years old and watched her coronation on TV while sitting next to his own Scottish-born mother. It is one of his childhood memories.

But when he first met Charles during a state visit to the UK in 2019, there was a problem.

Afterward, the president told aide Stephanie Grisham that the talks seemed to go on and on. “It’s nothing but climate change,” Grisham fumed, according to his White House memoir, “I’ll Take Your Questions Now.” Melania Trump admitted it with a laugh. “Oh, yes, he was very bored,” she said.

Following Elizabeth’s death, President Trump reflected on the challenges Charles will face as king. “She was just a legend,” he said in an interview for his 2024 book “Queens and Presidents.” “Time will pass, but it won’t be easy to replace someone like that.”

He added: “I hope Charles is given that opportunity as well.”

In 2025, just a month after Mr Trump’s second inauguration, Mr Starmer was clearly delighted when Mr Starmer delivered an invitation from Mr Charles for his second state visit to London, the first by a president. During a toast at a white tie dinner at Buckingham Palace, he called it “truly one of the greatest honors of my life.”

From Jeffrey Epstein to the Iran War

Prince Charles’ return visit to Washington comes at a tumultuous time.

The British royal family has been reeling from revelations of wrongdoing in the Jeffrey Epstein scandal by Prince Charles’ older brother, who was stripped of his royal title and is now known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. The US presidency has also been thrown into some turmoil as President Trump’s unprecedented assertion of executive power has divided Americans and sparked a major legal battle.

And the Iran war not only disrupted the Middle East, but also affected the global economy and long-standing alliances.

Starmer warns that Britain, which has been America’s closest friend in the world for decades, now feels forced to turn to Europe. After President Trump dismissed NATO as a “Paper Tiger” and said he was “absolutely” considering a US withdrawal, he said: “As the world continues on this unstable path, our long-term national interests require close collaboration with our European allies and the European Union.”

It is a period more difficult than any that Elizabeth faced as queen.

“I think the mission remains the same,” former Secretary of State and first lady Hillary Clinton said in a 2025 interview. “I think the mission remains the same. I’ve seen Charles since he became king, and he’s trying very hard to contribute.” “But times are different now, and they’re not as tolerant. Taking a public stand in the age of social media is very difficult, much more difficult than before.”

Welcome to Washington, King Charles.

Dave Mason passed away. The Rock Hall legend and co-founder of Traffic was 79 years old.

0

Dave Mason, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and founding member of the 1960s progressive rock band Traffic, has died.

A spokesperson for Mason confirmed to USA TODAY that Mason passed away on Sunday, April 19, at his home in Gardnerville, Nevada. He was 79 years old.

“Dave Mason lived a remarkable life dedicated to music and the people he loved,” said a statement mourning his death.

In 2024, Mason was diagnosed with serious heart disease during a routine medical checkup, and his tour was postponed. In 2025, Mason canceled all tour dates due to continued health issues.

“It’s been a long road to recovery. I love you all so much,” Mason wrote on Instagram at the time.

In addition to playing guitar in Traffic, Mason has played with Jimi Hendrix, Paul McCartney, and the Rolling Stones, and is credited with writing the soulful “Feelin’ Alright?,” which Joe Cocker popularized in a finger-snap version in 1969. Mason’s solo work includes the 1977 hit ballad “We Just Disagree.”

“I’m like the Forrest Gump of rock,” Mason told USA TODAY in a 2024 interview. In March 2025, he released his 21st album, A Shade of Blues.cent Album featuring appearances by Michael McDonald and Joe Bonamassa.

History of Dave Mason’s “Feelin’ Alright?”

Mason was born on May 10, 1946 in Worcester, England, but moved to California in 1969.

Mason broke out in the UK with Traffic in 1967 with three hits: “Paper Sun”, “Hole in My Shoe” and “Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush”.

A year later, the song “Feelin’ Alright?”, written by Mason, was a hit, although it wasn’t as successful on the charts. He never realized how integral the question mark was to his songwriting history.

Mason lamented that most people overlooked the nuance of the question mark at the end of the song’s title, since his intention was legitimately to ask the listener’s emotional state. “Are you feeling okay?”

Among the many covers of the song, Cocker’s version appeared a year after Mason was unceremoniously fired from Traffic for reasons still unclear in his book. Cocker injected a feel-good vibe into the song, turning its title into a statement rather than a question, creating a timeless bar jam.

“I wrote that song 58 years ago, and it’s as current as ever when I wrote it,” Mason told USA TODAY. “You have to thank Joe Cocker for that. Sometimes authors aren’t the best interpreters of their work.”

Dave Mason’s success was countered by a dark personal turn

In September 2024, Mason released a memoir, Only You Know & I Know, which supplements his modest career with anecdotes and unabridged commentary from friends and collaborators, taking its title from a song of the same name that he frequently covered, which became a signature hit for close friends Delaney and Bonnie in 1971, and a song on Rita Coolidge’s album that same year.

Although his career as a journeyman musician saw him play with and befriend some of the biggest names in music, his personal life often took a dark turn, with George Harrison performing with Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band before its release, and a few years later, Mason contributing guitar parts to Harrison’s album All Things Must Pass. He battled drug addiction, went bankrupt, had several failed relationships, and lost his son True in 2006 at age 35 to “addiction or suicide, we’ll never know,” Mason wrote in his memoir.

Mason is survived by his wife and partner Winifred Wilson, daughter Danielle, nephew John (Trish) Leonard, niece Michelle Leonard, and brothers-in-law Sloane (Claudia) Wilson and Walton (Barbara Sims) Wilson. In addition to True, Mason was preceded in death by a sister, Valerie Leonard;

Amazon Expands Access to GLP‑1 Weight Loss Drugs

Amazon is rolling out a new GLP-1 program aimed at simplifying access to the popular weight loss drug, from doctor visits to prescription delivery.

On April 21, the company announced that Amazon One Medical’s new Comprehensive GLP‑1 Management Program brings treatments into patients’ daily primary care and allows clinicians to monitor how weight loss intersects with cardiovascular health, metabolic status, and overall health. The program is available at Amazon One Medical stores nationwide.

Amazon says prescriptions can be picked up through Amazon Pharmacy with transparent pricing and “convenient shipping options.” Patients can access both injectable and oral GLP-1 medications through Amazon Pharmacy.

“To make it easier for customers to receive treatment”

The company said prices start at $25 a month for patients with insurance, while uninsured patients will pay at least $149 a month for the oral drug and $299 a month for the injectable drug.

“Expanding access to the latest GLP‑1 medicines with up-front, transparent pricing makes it easier for customers to receive the treatments their healthcare providers prescribe and stick with them by ensuring those medicines are delivered directly to patients,” Tanvi Patel, vice president and general manager of Amazon Pharmacy, said in a news release.

Amazon says its medicines are available in all 50 states and currently offers same-day delivery in about 3,000 cities and towns, with plans to expand to about 4,500 locations by the end of the year.

What are GLP-1 drugs and how do they work?

GLP-1 drugs are FDA-approved drugs used to lower blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. Many of the same drugs are also prescribed for weight loss, and different formulations and doses are approved for each use.

GLP‑1 stands for glucagon-like peptide‑1, a natural hormone that helps regulate metabolism, or how your body uses energy. USA TODAY previously reported. After a meal, GLP‑1 increases insulin production, which limits the release of sugar into the bloodstream, slows digestion, and signals the brain that you’re full.

Because of these effects, people taking GLP-1 drugs often experience fewer blood sugar spikes, less appetite, and feeling fuller after meals faster and longer, which can lead to weight loss over time.

Nicole Kidman’s daughter Sunday Rose wears Oscar de la Renta to prom

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s daughter Sunday Rose chose a dramatic look for prom.

The 17-year-old model posted her Oscar de la Renta look – a strapless gown with a corset-like bodice and sheer tulle skirt featuring silver floral embellishments – on Instagram on Sunday, April 19. Her brunette hair was long and a little messy. She modeled a melodramatic look overlooking the top of the stairs.

Even if this look doesn’t land on a designer’s radar, it might give you a hint of their plans to make it to the fashion house. Sunday Rose has already modeled for Miu Miu, making her runway debut at the Spring/Summer 2025 show during Paris Fashion Week, and also modeled in designer Jonathan Anderson’s first Dior Spring/Summer 2026 collection in October.

Sunday Rose was no stranger to fashion week before she debuted as a model, walking the runway at New York Fashion Week and covering Elle Australia in March.

“It’s great to have the privilege of having these experiences and meeting so many new people, but as a teenager it’s easy to get sucked into it all so quickly,” she told the magazine. “So being able to come back (to Nashville) and continue to have that perspective that I had back in high school has been very grounding.”

Kidman’s daughter will also soon be making her Met Gala debut alongside her mother, the vice chairwoman, Kidman revealed on her “Las Culturistas” podcast in March.

The young model is one of Kidman and Urban’s two daughters, Faith Margaret, 15. Kidman has two children, designer Isabella Kidman Cruise, 33, and Connor Cruise, 31, from her previous marriage to Tom Cruise, but both have largely stayed out of the spotlight.

Kidman, whose divorce from the country star was finalized in January after 19 years of marriage, told USA TODAY that she has cleared up her schedule to have “summer fun” with her teenage daughters.

Steak ‘n Shake adds new Chief MAHA Officer position to company

Fast food chain Steak ‘n Shake is creating a new position within the company, Chief MAHA Officer, to deepen its alignment with Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s “Make America Healthy Again” effort.

The company announced that Michael Bose, developer of the 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and former senior adviser in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Health, will take on the position. A news release shared with USA TODAY describes the position as a “new executive role dedicated to advancing nutritional integrity, ingredient transparency and the long-term health of Steak ‘n Shake customers.”

“The appointment of MAHA’s Chief Executive Officer reflects our continued commitment to making Steak ‘n Shake a major differentiator in the fast food world. Michael’s deep understanding of nutrition and experience in top-level health policy development make him ideal for such a role,” Sardar Biglari, chairman and CEO of Biglari Holdings, owner of Steak ‘n Shake, said in a release. “Simply put, delicious food should be good for you.”

The new role marks the company’s latest move to reinvent itself, which included switching from seed oil to beef tallow for cooking oil last March. In August, the company began offering sugar cane Coca-Cola soda in glass bottles to customers. And the “highest and largest American flag recognized by local governments” will be installed in various locations.

What is the title of Steak ‘n Shake’s Chief MAHA Officer?

The restaurant’s new position aligns with its commitment to “reclaiming the true spirit of American fast food” and “championing healthy fast food,” according to a news release from the restaurant.

As MAHA chief executive, Bose will oversee and lead a review of Steak & Shake’s ingredient sourcing, nutritional standards and preparation methods, the release said.

“Customers should never have to choose between taste and health,” Bose said in a release. “When restaurants do both, they serve better food and build lasting trust.”

What other recent changes has Steak ‘n Shake made?

Additionally, in February, the company announced its decision to remove all microwaves from franchised locations by April, writing in an online post that “quality restaurants don’t need microwaves.”

“This is part of our commitment to improving the quality of our food and using only traditional cooking methods,” the chain wrote. “Let’s eat real food.”

Prior to that, Steak ‘n Shake announced the switch from seed oil to beef tallow in March 2025, saying in a social media post, “Steak ‘n Shake is proud to support MAHA and Secretary Kennedy! Your life is limited by seed oil. We want to be at the forefront and make a difference! #MAHA.” Kennedy Jr. thanked the restaurant for its “leadership in the movement to make America healthy again.”

Along with cane-infused Coca-Cola sodas in glass bottles, the restaurant lends a patriotic shine to other products. Throughout the month of January, Steak ‘n Shake is celebrating America’s 250th anniversary, or half a century, by offering “Patriot Milkshakes” for just $2.50.

Mike Tomlin joins NBC Football Night in America for 2026 season

play

  • Tomlin coached the Steelers for 19 years and won one Super Bowl.
  • Now, he’s making a long-awaited career pivot.

NBC’s NFL coverage for the upcoming 2026 season could be even more appealing, save for the lineup of its flagship “Sunday Night Football.”

Former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin will be joining the network’s pregame coverage, USA TODAY Sports reported, according to a person familiar with the matter. The person was granted anonymity because NBC has not yet made an official announcement. The Athletic first reported Tomlin’s plans, but Peacock apparently beat out Fox for Tomlin’s services.

Certainly a must-watch TV, as Tomlin’s press conferences often were.

With his quick wit, typical deadpan speaking style, and wealth of soccer knowledge and experience, it was long expected that he would become a media superstar whenever he decided to transfer. After years of being treated to such gems as “Two dogs, one bone,” “I want volunteers, not hostages,” “I’m basically against comfort,” and “I expect routine catches to become routine,” viewers can only hope that Tomlin’s signature menu of metaphors will expand during “Football Night in America.” And of course, “standard is standard.”

Tomlin, 54, effectively replaces Tony Dungy, who won a Super Bowl ring as an assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers more than 20 years ago. Dungey announced his departure from NBC in March.

Tomlin will step down as Pittsburgh’s coach after the 2025 season, ending his 19-year tenure in the Steel City. He’s been largely under the radar since leaving the Steelers in January following a decisive playoff loss to the Houston Texans. Under his leadership, the team appeared in two Super Bowls, became the first player to win six Lombardi Trophies, and concluded his second season in 2008 with a win in Super Bowl XLIII. Tomlin’s overall record, including the postseason, is 201 wins, 126 losses, and 2 draws. He never lost a campaign.

Tomlin will join a crew consisting of host Malia Taylor, former Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett and former New England Patriots safety Devin McCourty.

  • unit: GP9500ETF, Model number: G0080630

What to do if you have a recalled Generac generator

Consumers who own a recalled Generac generator should immediately stop using the included accessories and visit the company’s website to find out if their product is included in the recall. If fuel has been filled and has not yet been filled, or if fuel leaks during filling, the consumer should contact the dealer or place of purchase for free repair.

Democratic redistricting map creaks in Virginia: 5 points

0

After their crushing defeat in the referendum, Republicans have vowed to continue Trump’s fight to reshape Congressional maps ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

play

Virginia voters handed Democrats a narrow victory in a high-stakes special election that will redraw the congressional map ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. This war was started by President Donald Trump and could now negatively impact the party’s prospects.

The Associated Press and NBC News cast the referendum in favor of the “yes” side and supported drawing an aggressively Democratic-leaning map for the state’s 11-member U.S. House delegation.

Democrats currently hold a 6-5 advantage, but under the new policy, that would temporarily give them a commanding 10-1 advantage.

“Virginia voters consulted and tonight approved interim measures to push back against a president who claims he is ‘deserving’ of more Republican seats,” Gov. Abigail Spanberger said in a statement to USA TODAY.

“Virginians watched other states comply with these demands without voter input, and we refused to let it go. We responded the right way, at the ballot box.”

Polls show a close race, with both sides spending millions of dollars from secret donors to persuade voters to accept or reject the measure.

There was a noticeable increase in early voting that favored Democrats. But Republicans, fueled by anger from rural voters in the southern half of the state, surged on Election Day to reject the measure, nearly closing the gap.

With more than 95% of the results tallied, the “yes” side had an advantage of about 2.5 percentage points, according to state data.

Here are the key takeaways from the April 21 contest.

“Strong counterattack”: Democratic Party gains the upper hand in national redistricting battles

Virginia’s result, combined with a similar referendum victory for Democrats in California last year, means Mr. Trump is on the back foot in the partisan gerrymandering battle he started.

President Trump last year urged Texas Republicans to redraw the state’s map to protect the Republican House majority from a “blue wave” expected this fall. He encouraged other Republican-led states, such as Missouri and North Carolina, to do the same.

Together, those three states and Ohio added nine Republican-leaning seats to the national map, according to trackers. But the tactic appears to have backfired, as the president’s liberal opponents followed suit in California and Virginia. Both states, along with Utah, adopted new maps, giving Democrats 10 seats.

“A lot of people expected the Democratic Party to roll over and play dead, but we did the opposite,” House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York told The Associated Press.

“Democrats haven’t backed down,” he added. “We fought back. When they got behind, we fought back hard.”

Virginia referendum turned into a proxy war between Obama and Trump

President Trump put considerable political weight on the “no” side, calling on Republicans to vote by phone on April 20 and criticizing the proposal as a “shameful” attempt to “disenfranchise” conservatives.

In the other corner was former President Barack Obama, who cut a 30-second ad for the “yes” side that said Republicans were trying to “steal” seats in Congress and “rig the next election” this fall.

The special election marked a rare direct showdown between the two men, who are good friends in public but have fiercely attacked each other since Trump returned to power last year.

In February, President Trump came under fire after his Truth Social account shared a video depicting President Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama as monkeys, with many calling him racist. He has also mused about running against Mr. Obama in 2028 if both men seek a third term, which is prohibited by the U.S. Constitution.

President Obama has not responded to such challenges, but he has launched subtle and overt attacks on the current administration amid growing criticism from some progressives that the Democratic Party needs to get more involved in the resistance movement.

The “no” side is fueled by anger at anticipated losses.

Early voting in Virginia showed high turnout, which typically favors Democrats. But the Republican-backed “No” side fared better than expected in motivating its base, driven largely by anger among rural voters in the southern half of the state.

The state has some of the fairest maps in the country, and conservatives were able to increase poll-based turnout on Election Day, according to Princeton University’s Gerrymandering Project.

Many on the “no” side emphasized how unfair the new maps would be, even temporarily until the 2030 Census, and urged independent voters to think twice about supporting the measure.

Former Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) said in an April 21 post on the

“The race was much closer than the left expected because Virginians know a 10-1 map is not Virginia,” he added. “I urge the Virginia Supreme Court to rule against this unconstitutional process that disenfranchises millions of Virginians.”

Confused voters and dark money rule

Spending totaling about $100 million from both sides, largely fueled by similarly named groups of secret donors, helped confuse Virginia voters through the special election.

Virginians for Fair Elections, the main group supporting the ballot issue, has raised about $64 million, according to the Virginia Public Access Project. Meanwhile, Virginians supporting FairMap, which opposed the referendum, received about $19 million.

Both rely heavily on donations from so-called “black money” and are not required to reveal the source of their funds.

Some people reported receiving materials in their mailboxes that are commonly used to deceive voters, including newspaper-like publications supporting the bill. And both sides appear to have used images of Trump and Obama to spread a bit of misinformation.

Obama has previously opposed partisan gerrymandering, and opponents of the new maps ran their own spots featuring similar remarks from the former president. A local Democratic Party in Virginia was caught using an image of Trump on a misleading billboard falsely claiming support for the referendum.

What’s next? Republicans seek rebuttal in Florida court

The final tally will not mark the end of the redistricting battle, which is likely to continue into the fall.

Virginia House Minority Leader Terry Kilgore, who heads the state’s Republican caucus, filed a lawsuit against the amendment, arguing that the referendum question lacked a “neutral framework.” He said in a statement that the matter “will now be referred to the courts.”

“It’s still possible that this map won’t go into effect this November,” said Kyle Kondik, executive director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics, about the redistricting map that could change Virginia’s 11-member congressional delegation from a slim 6-5 Democratic advantage to a much larger 10-1 advantage.

Kondik said there are serious questions about whether Democrats followed the proper process to amend the state constitution.

The Virginia Supreme Court allowed the referendum to take place while it reviewed claims from Kilgore and other plaintiffs who argued that the bill would “restore equity” in the new districts and was unfair and misleading. The legality of the referendum is expected to be reviewed in the coming weeks.

Trump’s allies could also get a reprieve from the U.S. Supreme Court, potentially striking down key provisions of the 1965 Voting Rights Act that prohibit racial gerrymandering. Several southern states are expected to rush to draw new maps that favor Republicans in the midterm elections.

The redistricting battle between President Trump and Democrats has now shifted to other states, including Florida, where Gov. Ron DeSantis has convened a special legislative session to consider maps that could add three to five Republican-leaning seats.

Kylie Jenner sued by her housekeeper alleging poor working conditions

A woman who worked as Kylie Jenner’s housekeeper for almost a year claims her boss discriminated against and harassed her on the job, creating an “intolerable” working environment.

play

Kylie Jenner is being taken to court by a former housekeeper who claims she suffered “severe and widespread harassment” while working in Jenner’s home.

The woman, Angelica Hernandez Vazquez, filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles on April 17th against the agency that hired Jenner and Vazquez. Vazquez said that since she began working at Jenner’s home in September 2024, she was subjected to a “hostile work environment” where she experienced “discrimination, harassment, and retaliation based on race, national origin, religion, and disability.”

USA TODAY has reached out to Jenner’s representatives for comment.

Most of Vazquez’s claims, described as a “Salvadoran woman and Catholic,” target her supervisors, who she said “snap their fingers” at her, “made fun of her accent and treated (her) as inferior because of her Salvadoran background.”

Additionally, Vazquez was allegedly subjected to “repeated derogatory comments referencing her Salvadoran origin and immigration status, insinuations that co-workers with similar backgrounds had been deported, and bragging about her U.S. citizenship in a manner that disparaged Plaintiff as a work permit holder.”

Housekeeper says she also worked at Kylie Jenner’s boyfriend’s house

She alleges that after raising concerns about her treatment around November 2024, Ms. Vazquez was ridiculed by two supervisors and “no corrective action was taken.” Instead, she says, the “abuse” escalated and she faced retaliation. After she filed another complaint in March 2025, Vasquez alleges that “her supervisor threw a hanger at Plaintiff’s feet while reprimanding her.”

Vazquez’s working conditions were “so intolerable, hostile, and illegal that a reasonable person” in her position “would have felt compelled to resign,” the complaint states. Ms. Vasquez resigned in August, 11 months after starting her employment.

Vasquez’s lawsuit alleges that Jenner, La Maison Family Services, and Tri Star Services should be held liable because they “knew or should have known of the harassment and failed to take immediate and appropriate corrective action to stop the behavior and prevent it from happening again.”

Vasquez’s claims of violations of the California Labor Code and the California Fair Employment and Housing Act include allegations that she was not reimbursed for work-related expenses.

She said she was directed to work in locations other than Jenner’s home, including “visiting Jenner’s boyfriend’s residence numerous times.” However, Vasquez claims he was not compensated for mileage or travel expenses.

Jenner and Timothée Chalamet have been romantically linked since 2023, and have since made several high-profile appearances at events such as the Oscars and Golden Globes.

Ms. Vasquez is seeking a jury trial to determine compensatory, compensatory and punitive damages against her, and is seeking an injunction restraining the defendants from participating in the acts she alleges.

What is Mega Millions?

Mega Millions is a multi-state lottery played in 45 states, Washington DC, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Tickets cost $5 and players choose six numbers from two pools: five white balls numbered 1-70 and one gold mega ball numbered 1-24, or use Quick Pick/Easy Pick to let the computer choose the numbers.

To win the jackpot, your ticket must match all six winning numbers. If multiple tickets match, the jackpot prize will be split between the winners.

How to play Mega Millions

To play, purchase a Mega Millions ticket at participating retailers such as convenience stores, gas stations, and grocery stores. In some states, tickets can also be purchased online.

After purchasing your ticket, choose five white ball numbers (1-70) and one mega ball number (1-24). Players who don’t want to choose their own numbers can choose Quick Pick or Easy Pick, which generates numbers randomly.

Mega Millions tickets have built-in multipliers that automatically increase your non-jackpot winnings by 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, or 10x. Previously, players had to pay an additional fee to add Megapliers.

Gilgo Beach killer confesses to ex-wife that he murdered 7 women in their home, she says

Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuerman has pleaded guilty to murdering eight women over a period of nearly 20 years on Long Island, and admitted to his now ex-wife that he murdered seven women in their home, she said in a new documentary.

Heuerman initially pleaded not guilty to seven murders, but changed his plea to guilty on April 8, and also confessed to the eighth murder. According to his confession, the 62-year-old architect murdered the women between about 1993 and 2010.

Asa Ererup, who was married to Heuerman for 27 years and filed for divorce in 2023 after Heuerman was arrested and first indicted on three murders, revealed in the Peacock documentary “Gilgo Beach Killer: House of Secrets” that her husband confessed to her murder.

“He looked very nervous. Very, very nervous,” Ellerup said in a preview shared by Peacock. “He said he murdered eight women.”

“He said I wasn’t home the entire time,” Ellerup said. Prosecutors said she and her daughter were out of town during many of the murders.

Asked if anyone was killed in the house, Ellerup said: “He said yes, they were killed in his room downstairs. All but one.”

This episode is scheduled to be released on April 23rd. The preview published by Peacock did not include when Ellerup and Heuerman’s conversation took place. Ellerup’s attorney did not immediately return a request from USA TODAY.

Heuerman’s guilty plea is for the murder of 22-year-old Megan Waterman. Melissa Barthelemy, 24 years old. Amber Costello, 27 years old. Maureen Brainerd Burns, 25 years old. Jessica Taylor, 20 years old. Sandra Kostila, 28 years old. He also admitted to killing Karen Bergata, 34.

Some of the women are believed to have worked as sex workers.

In 2010 and 2011, several bodies were discovered along New York’s Gilgo Beach, leading authorities to fear that a serial killer was at work. It took another 10 years for investigators to match the DNA from Heuerman’s pizza to the man’s hair found with his body. He was first implicated in a series of murders involving a pickup truck. Authorities said one of the women’s bodies also had hair that contained DNA matching Heuerman’s daughter, who would have been an infant at the time of the murder.

Mr. Heuerman is scheduled to appear in court again on June 17th for sentencing. He was sentenced to three consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole for the murders of three women, and 100 consecutive years to life imprisonment for the murders of four women. The Suffolk County district attorney’s office said he agreed to admit to killing Bergata, and her case is subject to guilty pleas in seven other murder cases.

After pleading guilty, Ellerup asked for privacy for his family.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. Their loss is immeasurable and the focus should be on them in this moment,” Ellerup said.

Federal authorities indict the man who supplied the gun used in the Louisiana shooting that killed eight children.

  • A Shreveport man has been arrested on suspicion of providing the firearm used in the shooting.
  • Charles Ford, 56, is charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and making false statements.
  • This gun was used by Shamar Elkins to kill eight children on April 19th.

Federal authorities have arrested and charged a Louisiana man in connection with securing a firearm used in a mass murder that killed eight children over the weekend.

Firearm charges against a Shreveport man are related to the weapon Shamar Elkins used in the April 19 murder, which police characterized as domestic violence. Elkins later died during a confrontation with police, but it is not yet clear whether he committed suicide or was shot by officers.

Charles Ford, 56, has been charged with making false statements and being a felon in possession of a firearm in connection with the gun Elkins used to kill eight children, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced on Tuesday, April 21.

“There are no words for the acts committed by Shamar Elkins in Shreveport on April 19th. They are beyond comprehension and explanation,” U.S. Attorney Zachary Keller said in a statement. “Our law enforcement partners are investigating all aspects of how this tragedy occurred, and this case stems from that investigation, particularly how Elkins secured the firearms he used to execute his children.”

He went on to say that Elkins’ death “means our community will never see him served justice.”

“As we continue to investigate and prosecute this case with our law enforcement partners, it is our hope that holding the owner of the gun Elkins used in his crime accountable will bring some comfort to the Shreveport community,” Keller said.

Mr. Ford faces up to 15 years in federal prison if convicted of firearm possession and up to five years in prison for making false statements.

“Holding people accountable goes beyond the person who pulled the trigger and includes those who obtain and distribute firearms that are later used in violent crimes,” said Joshua Jackson, special agent in charge of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Authorities said Ford lied to ATF agents during the initial investigation and said he did not have an assault pistol. The suspect later admitted to possessing an assault rifle and claimed to have kept it under the seat.

This information was discovered by law enforcement following traces of the firearm when they interviewed the original purchaser, who identified Ford as the person who gave him the firearm.

What is an accommodation interview? How employee retention strategies work

0

What if companies didn’t wait until employees left to ask what went wrong?

That’s the idea behind “stay interviews,” a growing workplace strategy designed to improve retention before problems become serious. Rather than focusing on why someone is leaving, a retention interview shifts the conversation to why employees choose to stay and what could ultimately force them out.

The core of a stay interview is a structured conversation between the manager and the employee about what’s working and what’s not working in their role.

According to a 2026 Gallup poll, 52% of employees who voluntarily left their job said their boss or company could have taken steps to stop them from leaving. Accommodation interviews aim to identify such opportunities early, while there is still time to act.

The goal is to understand what keeps employees engaged, what support they need, and what changes can improve the employee experience.

By having these conversations regularly, employers can identify concerns early, make meaningful adjustments, and create a workplace where employees feel supported and motivated to stick around.

Difference between retention interview and exit interview

Unlike exit interviews, which are conducted after the employee has already decided to leave, retention interviews are conducted early on, when there is still time to make changes.

They are designed to surface concerns in real-time, giving managers an opportunity to improve the day-to-day employee experience before small issues turn into reasons for termination.

According to Erica Rivera, a career coach and former technical recruiter at Google, retention interviews are a “retention strategy that many companies use to try to keep people in their organizations.”

In contrast, exit interviews are retrospective. While it can provide useful insights, it’s too late to retain departing employees.

Reasons why companies introduce accommodation interviews

As the labor force becomes increasingly mobile, companies are paying close attention to open interviews as a way to secure talent. With turnover rates still high in many industries, retention is no longer a secondary concern but a core business priority. Gallup estimates that 42% of employee turnover is preventable, which is often tied to factors such as management, engagement, and workplace experience.

“In 2026, more and more companies will be using overnight interviews because they act as a proactive ‘examination’ rather than a reactive ‘autopsis’,” said Janelle Rush, a human resources leader. She added: “The cost of preventing turnover is a fraction of the cost of managing it.”

The costs can be significant. Considering hiring, onboarding, and lost productivity, Rush says, “replacing an experienced employee can range from 50% to 200% of the employee’s annual salary.”

In reality, however, accommodation interviews are not always as aggressive as intended.

“I’d like to say they’re more proactive than reactive, but I’ve seen more of the latter,” Rivera said. Companies often conduct retention interviews only after they notice an increase in employee turnover, using the interviews to understand why employees are leaving rather than to prevent them from leaving.

Still, the economic incentives cannot be ignored. “It costs more to hire and train people than to focus on internal retention,” Rivera says.

As competition for skilled workers increases, companies can’t afford to overlook what keeps employees engaged every day. Accommodation interviews offer a way to get ahead of these challenges by understanding the needs of employees before they decide when to leave.

Tomos Bright, global talent and culture manager at Mauve Group, explains, “Residency interviews are conversations about why someone stays and what makes them stay longer. Think of it as the human counterpart to an engagement survey.” Unlike surveys, these conversations open up room for honest, nuanced feedback that’s hard to capture through forms alone.

Frequently asked questions for accommodation interviews

Residential interviews are designed to be conversational rather than formal, creating a space for honest and thoughtful feedback.

Erica Rivera said the discussion may feel casual, but that’s by design. Managers often ask open-ended questions such as:

  • How is the situation now?
  • What part of your role excites you the most on a day-to-day basis?
  • Are there any areas where you feel there are challenges or gaps?
  • How can we better support your growth and next steps?

These questions will help uncover what’s working, what’s not, and what might influence an employee’s decision to stay.

Questions to avoid in residency interviews

Not all questions will lead to useful feedback. In some cases, the wrong approach can make employees feel uncomfortable or wary.

avoid:

  • main question (Example: “You’re happy here, aren’t you?”)
  • Performance review-like questions not a conversation
  • Anything that puts employees in the field Regarding retirement (e.g. “Are you planning to quit?”)
  • Questions without follow-throughespecially if concerns were raised but not addressed.

The goal is to create a safe, low-pressure environment, not to interrogate or elicit a sense of security.

Advantages of accommodation interview

Accommodation interviews benefit both employees and employers by creating a space for open and ongoing conversations about the work experience. Done well, it helps leaders address concerns early, strengthens manager-employee relationships, and improves retention rates.

Bright said residency interviews often act as an extension of regular one-on-one check-ins. “In practice, it’s often an informal extension of one-on-ones or check-ins with line managers, providing clear insight into what people need to feel supported and committed,” he says. “And while informal, retention interviews can be a crucial factor in deciding whether someone stays or leaves.”

These conversations not only retain employees but also strengthen trust between employees and managers. “It’s nice to have these types of touchpoints,” Rivera says. These give managers a clearer picture of how their team is feeling and where they need additional support.

In a workplace shaped by performance improvement plans, layoffs, and exit interviews, retention interviews can also serve a more human purpose: letting employees know their voices matter and are valued before they consider leaving.

Potential disadvantages

Although the residency interview is a valuable tool, it is not without its limitations. Its effectiveness largely depends on how it is implemented and whether employees feel comfortable being honest.

Trust is a key factor. If that isn’t established, employees may refrain from giving meaningful feedback.

“If you haven’t built a trusting relationship with someone, you’re probably not going to get the honest feedback you’re looking for,” Rivera says.

Janelle Rush has similar concerns. “Residency interviews fail when the company culture is already toxic or fearful,” she says. In these environments, employees may default to “safe” or overly polite responses rather than honest feedback, especially if they’re worried about being labeled negatively.

Even in a healthy workplace, tensions can arise during a residency interview if expectations are not clear. Employees may wonder how their feedback will be used or worry about unintended consequences.

Without trust, transparency, and follow-through, residential interviews risk becoming performative rather than productive.

conclusion

Retention interviews are gaining traction because they provide managers with real-time insight into the employee experience and an opportunity to act before issues lead to turnover.

They have become the “gold standard,” as Rush explains, because they provide actionable insights while there is still time to react. Unlike an exit interview, which reflects on what went wrong, a retention interview focuses on improving the employee’s day-to-day experience in the moment.

It doesn’t have to be formal to be effective. Rivera says these conversations should happen on a regular basis, rather than every scheduled check-in. Weekly one-on-ones can include space for employees to talk about not just what they’re doing, but how they’re feeling.

More structured retention interview conversations can occur quarterly, or at least every six months, giving managers a consistent way to understand what employees need to stay engaged.

At the end of the day, stay interviews are most effective when they’re part of an ongoing conversation, rather than a one-time fix.

Trump approval rating remains flat due to Iran war and rising prices: poll

0

play

President Donald Trump’s approval rating remains at its lowest level since returning to the White House, as the country faces the possibility of an escalation of the war with Iran, according to the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll.

A poll released on April 21 showed that 36% of Americans approve of President Trump’s job performance. Voters gave the president similar ratings in a Reuters poll released March 23. However, the president’s approval rating for taking office is still 4 points lower than in a Reuters poll conducted early last month, with many Americans continuing to cite rising food and gas prices as a reason for their disapproval.

The latest Reuters/Ipsos poll of 4,557 Americans is in line with similar polls showing President Trump’s approval rating hovering around 40% as the Iran war approaches two months. A new poll shows 36% of Americans support war, slightly higher than the 35% in a previous Reuters poll released earlier this month.

New poll casts doubt on President Trump’s temperament

The latest Reuters/Ipsos poll asked about the 79-year-old president’s temperament and mental sharpness amid a barrage of profane social media posts, including threats against Iran that “the entire civilization will perish” and clashes with Pope Leo XIV.

In the poll, 71% of respondents said President Trump was not “calm,” but 26% said they thought he would be calm during his term in office.

But Republican voters were even more divided on this question. About 53% of Republicans surveyed think President Trump is calm, while 46% of Republicans say he is not. A small number of respondents declined to answer that question, the pollster said.

Meanwhile, about 92% of Democratic voters surveyed said President Trump is not calm, compared to 7% of Democrats who said they view Trump that way.

The poll also found that nearly three-quarters of independent voters say President Trump is not calm, compared to 18% who disagree.

Surveys show that Americans think more highly of Pope Leo than of the president. About 60% have a favorable view of the Pope, compared to 36% of Trump.

But the Chicago-born pope is not just better than the president. Respondents also viewed the Pope more favorably than other prominent Democrats, including Trump’s rivals, California Gov. Gavin Newsom and former Vice President Kamala Harris.

Opinion polls show that Americans differ in their president’s mental sharpness

The poll also found that about 51% of Americans think President Trump’s mental sharpness has worsened, while 40% think it has remained the same. Another 6% said the president’s mental sharpness has improved.

By political party, about 14% of Republicans, 85% of Democrats, and 54% of independents believe that President Trump’s mental strength has deteriorated. Nearly two-thirds of Republicans say the president’s mental sharpness remains the same, compared to 12% of Democrats and 35% of independents.

About 13% of Republicans, 2% of Democrats and 4% of independents think his mental health has improved.

The poll was conducted from April 15th to 20th and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
